Famous Novelists – Razia Butt

All over the world famous novels are adapted into films, dramas and theater plays. However for unknown reasons this trend was not much popular in films and dramas of Pakistan until the surge of private television channels in mid 2000’s. But the few occasions when the story is adapted from novel, mostly the film/drama has proved successful. This article is first in a series where we try to look at dramas/films which were based on novels.

Films are the initial popular showbiz medium in our country (after radio and theater) with many memorable films made in Pakistan. Adapting a novel for film is never been popular, but the limited number novels adapted  for films were mostly written by female writers. Among them only one name has the distinction of being equally popular in films and dramas, which off course is Razia Butt. The films and dramas based on Razia Butt are discussed in detail below.

Razia Butt is a popular fiction writer and was popular for many generations. She wrote over 50 novels which were very popular especially among ladies. Razia Butt passed away in 2012. To en-cash popularity of her novels few film producers adapted novels of Razia Butt into films. Most of the films names were same as novel.

Naila:
Based on the novel with same name, Naila was the first complete colored film made in Lahore starring Shamim Ara, Santosh Kumar and Darpan. Released in 1965, it was directed by Sharif Nayyer while Master Inayat Hussain was composer. The film proved super hit and paved the way for further novel based films.

Saiqa:
The heroine of Naila, Shamim Ara decided to produce her own film and her selection was another Razia Butt novel Saiqa. This film was released in 1968. Shamim Ara, Muhammad Ali and Darpan were in lead roles. Directed by Laiq Akhtar, Nisar Bazmi composed all the songs. Saiqa also proved superhit.

Anila:
Anila was released in 1969, Nadeem and Deeba were in lead roles. Directed by Raza Mir, while music composer was Nisar Bazmi. Aneela failed at box office.

Noreen:
Noreen was released in 1970 and failed at box office. Muhammad Ali and Zeba were in lead roles, music by Nisar Bazmi and directed by Laiq Akhtar.

Khalish:
Khalish was released in 1972 and based on novel Laghzish of Razia Butt. Directed by Laiq Akhtar, music by M. Ashraf, the lead star consisted of Waheed Murad, Raani and Sangeeta. The film performed average on box office.

Pyasa:
Pyasa was released in 1973. Shahid and Raani were in lead roles. It was directed by Hassan Tariq while Nisar Bazmi was composer. The film was based on novel Wehshi by Razia Butt, and failed at box office.

Mohabbat Ho To Aisi:
After four consecutive unsuccessful/average films, the last urdu film ‘Mohabbat Ho To Aisi’ was released in 1989 which was based on novel ‘Shabbo’. This film was also the last film of pair of Muhammad Ali and Zeba. Its director was Feroz and musician was Nisar Bazmi. The film failed due to extreme poor direction.

Gulabo:
Gulabo was a punjabi film released in 2008. It was directed by Sangeeta while Saima, Moammar Rana, Resham Babar Ali and Saud were in main roles. Gulabo earned average business at box office. It is the only punjabi film based on Razia Butt novel.

————————-

Razia Butt is perhaps the only fiction writer whose novels are adapted for both films and television. In Pakistan television started in 1964 and till 70’s it turned into a strong medium. Many television dramas are also based on the novels of Razia Butt

Noreena:
Noreena was a play from PTV Peshawar Center based on novel Noreena by Razia Butt. Directed by Ateeq Ahmed, it was dramatized by Younas Qayasi. Reena Siddiqui, Aamir Fareed, Reena Siddiqui, Anita Kamphor, Shariqa Fatima and Qavi Khan were in lead roles. The drama was aired in 1994.

Anita:
Anita was a play from PTV Quetta Center based on novel Anita by Razia Butt. Irum Hassan and Anwar Ali were in lead roles. Dramatized by Younus Qayyasi, the play was directed by Sajjad Ahmed. The drama was aired in 1995

Naajia:
HUM TV is the only private satellite channel which adapted several novels of Razia Butt. Naajia was the first one in 2007, shot in Mauritius. Farhan Ali Agha, Javeriya Abbasi, Zhalay Sarhadi and Fahad Mustafa were in lead roles.

Daastan:
Dastan in 2010 is too date the last drama based on a novel Baano of Razia Butt and perhaps the most successful one too. Sanam Baloch, Fawad Khan and Mehreen Raheel were in lead roles supported by a huge supporting cast. Dramatized by Sameera Fazal, the play was directed by Haissam Hussain. Novel Baano of Razia Butt was on the partition of India and initial years after creation of Pakistan.

MasterChef Pakistan Week 01 – Auditions 01!

Ohkay so firstly I must say WOW! The very first seaon of the most awaited Masterchef Pakistan has begun & I am totally impressed. The very first episode was enough to let us know the scale at which this show is going to be conducted. I liked the simple approach where they didn’t try to dig deeper into the backgrounds of the contestants but in stead sticked to their cooking skills which they came to show in this competition. First episode down & can’t wait to see what’s more to come already. :)

The judges of the show are Chef Mehboob, Chef Khurram & Chef Zakir. I must say the judges kept their grace & were to the point. They were lenient & friendly with the contestants but were strict when it came to the judgement, just exactly how the judges should be like. At the beginning of the episode they announced that the title winner will be awarded with PKR 50 Lacs & a chance to publish their own cook book, which I must say is a huge pay off in any reality show ever seen.

Now coming onto the auditions, I liked the fact that they didn’t go all over Pakistan to show where & how they picked which contestant. The show has commenced at a point where top 100 have been selected & now the battle for the top 50 spots has begun. The judges didn’t give much of a critera of their judgement but by looking at the auditions they certainly selected those who came up with their own mind in the cooking. The judges are definitely looking for some creativity & mostly those contestants who attempted fusion cooking got through to the next round.

I must say to be honest I never expected to see such advanced & diverse cooking in Masterchef Pakistan, not underestimating our talent by any means but I didn’t know people all across Pakistan would marvel at different techniques of cooking that well. All those contestants who came forward for the auditions presented something unique & fascinating which proves that this competition is going to be a lot more interesting & there’s no chance left to miss this show.

A few contestants who got selected in tonight’s episode were:

Mudassir Ilyas the GM of Medical store from Karachi & he presented ‘Fish w/ Garlic Rice & Vegetable Sauce’
Madiha Khalid a housewife from Islamabad & she came up with ‘Grilled Salmon w/ Smoked Salad & Orange Sauce’
Kaneez Zehra a housewife from Karachi who made ‘Hindustani Platter’
Adnan Qureshi a student from Islamabad who did a fusion of ‘Rice Macaroni & Steaks’
Bushra Fatima who came up with ‘Chicken Biryani & Cake Rusk Sweet Dish’
Ainne a yoga instructor who made ‘Steam Roast & Chicken Kastoori’
Madiha a student from Islamabad & she came up with ‘Chicken Mushroom w/ Bashindo Sauce’
Saad Mustafa a CEO who presented ‘Mutton Chops w/ Brown Gravy, Mesh & Fig Chutney’
Ammarah Numan a housewife from Karachi & she made ‘Mexican Enchiladas w/ Salsa Sauce’
Ammar Afridi a student & a fan of Gordon Ramsay who made ‘Indo Chinese Chicken Chilli Dry’
Ambreen Tariq a Government employee & she made ‘Chatni Fish w/ Spicy Veggies’
Some others who got the aprons were Sobia, Sidra Tariq, Raheel Fatima & Ali Baloch.

So this was the list of the contestants who got the white aprons in these auditions & they qualified for the next round. One thing that’s worth mentioning is that these contestants went through live cooking challenge where they got a time limit of 1 hour in which they had to present the food to the judges & to cook such amazing dishes in an ultimatum with such a pressure on your head is amazing.

I am glad that they kept the spirit of the show light-hearted & the contestants kept their calm as well. They did show their excitement which was obviously justified but none of them actually went on a sympathy spree in front of the judges. This was the only thing that I was dreading in Masterchef but I must say I am glad our weekends are now going to be filled with something worthy & we’d have something to look forward to & discuss every week.

One thing that did bug me a little was the choppy editing because some contestants weren’t introduced properly & some didn’t tell which city they belonged to. I think it would’ve been better that along with the dish ticker, they had shown the ticker having the details of the contestants so as to remember them easily but never-mind.

Of all the contestants in this episode I found Madiha Khalid, Ammarah Numan, Madiha, Ammar Afridi & Ambreen Tariq really interesting & I am definitely rooting for them all. Really happy with the curtain raiser of Masterchef Pakistan & can’t wait to see the rest of the season, bring it on!!! :)

Share your views about the very first episode.

Keep supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

What Happened When Muhammad Mehfooz Shaheed’s Grave Was Dug

0

A Shaheed has great value in the eyes of Allah, it has been said in the Quran

وَلاَ تَقُولُواْ لِمَنْ يُقْتَلُ فِي سَبيلِ اللّهِ أَمْوَاتٌ بَلْ أَحْيَاء وَلَكِن لاَّ تَشْعُرُونَ

“Those who are killed in the cause of Allah: Do not call them dead.” In fact ! they are living, though you can not perceive that life”.

ATV’s Morning Show host Farah Hussain has been conducting the show very well. This time she interviewed the brother of Muhammad Mehfooz Shaheed, who received Nishan-e-Haider. The brother of the Shaheed told her something that was really shocking. He told her that when his brother got the Nishan-e-Haider it was decided that the Shaheed’s dead body will be shifted to another grave. Many people were against the idea because naturally the corpse would have been eaten up by then.

He said that when the grave was dug six months after his brother passed away, a rain cloud appeared out of nowhere and it started drizzling. The grave smelled really good and when the coffin was being lifted there was fresh blood coming out of it. The body looked like it had been buried only minutes ago. Also, the flowers on the coffin were still fresh.

Trailer of film Main Manto is screened to limited audience

‘Main Manto’ is a much anticipated film based on the life of famous literary figure and short story writer Saadat Hassan Manto. The movie is directed by Sarmad Sultan Khoosat who is also playing the lead role of Manto, Saba Qamar and Mahira Khan are the other cast members, thats it, lately nothing has been noticed with regards to this film in print, electronic or social media. However at a recently concluded Islamabad Literary Festival, the extended trailer of this film is presented to audience. As reported by English Daily The News, ‘Sharp cinematography and stellar performances really had many counting on the flick to add substantially to the clichéd ‘revival of cinema’ in Pakistan. Apparently, the film had struck quite some chords’. The trailer was praised by audience as well as participants including Faryal Gauhar and Sahira Kazmi. As per same report, the film is lined up to release in July 2014. In between the lines the report also mentions bold subject of this film by saying ‘Main Manto comes out in July this year, hopefully not to a burnt or vandalised cinema’.

Here is full content from English Daily The News

“But perhaps the best part of this cinematic fervour was the extended trailer of Sarmad Khoosat’s upcoming ‘Manto-opus’ called Main Manto. Sharp cinematography and stellar performances really had many counting on the flick to add substantially to the clichéd ‘revival of cinema’ in Pakistan. Apparently, the film had struck quite some chords. Feryal Gauhar stood up at the end of the trailer and said, “Manto tou zinda hai, per main marr gayi thi kya? Mujhe kyun nahen liya iss mein?!” Sahira Kazmi went to Khoosat to congratulate him, and insisted that she be shown the film as soon as possible. Main Manto comes out in July this year, hopefully not to a burnt or vandalised cinema. – See more at: http://magazine.thenews.com.pk/mag/detail_article.asp?id=7819&magId=11#sthash.sEd9M0Us.dpuf”

Mohabbat Subha Ka Sitara Hai – Episode 21

This latest episode was much better than the ones we have seen in the past few weeks. It was actually good to see that Zeeshan did not have a sudden change of heart. His attitude towards Romaissa did not change at all after the injury. The fact that his family has no time for him will serve as a reality check for Zeeshan. They obviously don’t care enough to take time out of their busy schedules to give Zeeshan company, that is another duty that has been allocated to Romaissa. I was surprised to see them concerned even initially!

The nervousness and uneasiness which Romaissa feels when she is around Zeeshan was portrayed brilliantly by Sanam Jung. Some of the scenes however were a repetition of what we have already seen in the last few episodes. The scene in which Bushra tells Romaissa that Maham takes after her father was one of the best scenes in tonight’s episode. Zeeshan treats Romaissa like a punching bag which he uses without thinking twice to let out his frustration.

ms1

The child star playing Maham is adorable but the person responsible for her styling could have done a much better job. Most of the times it looks like the poor kid is wearing a hair piece. This episode could have been far better if Romaissa’s mazloomiyat wasn’t forced upon the viewers over and over again. I could relate to her feelings more when she couldn’t go to see Zeeshan although she is technically his wife and also when Zeeshan mistreated her. But the scenes in which she was tagged as manhoos by Zeeshan’s mother and of course Bushra seemed forced.

Walid has finally decided to run the business and it seems like he is doing really well too. Maybe that is the reason why Zeeshan is not needed any more and because of that his father does not give him the attention like he used to before.

ms2

The preview of the next episode looked promising; Zeeshan will finally start looking at Romaissa as a living entity! I hope it is love and not sympathy which draws him closer to Romaissa. The play really should pick up pace now so that we at least have some happy memories of the last few episodes. I must say that Adeel Hussein and Sanam Jung look good together and I really want Romaissa to have a happy ending. Like many other viewers, I also want to see Nabeel’s family paying for everything that they have done till now.

For once, I am really looking forward to the next episode. I hope I am not disappointed.

Shaan and Ali Zafar’s War Of Words

0

ARY Film Awards have been the talk of the town lately, now there is more news about it. Shaan said in the show that actors who worked for India were “cheap sell-outs.” There were many prominent stars in the audience like Zeba Bakhtiar and Javed Sheikh who have worked in India too. The audience was not happy with Shaan’s comment because it was degrading.

Ali Zafar was not going to sit quietly and take the bashing. When he went on the stage to receive his award, he said,

“Hum doosri cheezon ka sahara letay hain apni khaamion ko chupane ke liye, patriotism ke naam pae, doosri cheezon ke naam pae…”

“I think we should be honest. Humain sach bolna chahiye aur woh waqt agaya hai ke anay walay logon se sach bola jaaye”  he added

shaan ali

Not only this he also said that Shaan should not have been disrespectful towards many notable people like Bade Ghulam Ali, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mohsin Khan, Zeba Bakhtiar, Salma Agha, Shafqat Amanat Ali and Atif Aslam. He said that these stars had worked hard to make a place in India and have received tremendous appreciation for it. Calling them and him “cheap sell-outs” was not right at all.

He also said that the younger lot should not let such comments discourage them because they have the right to go and work anywhere they want to.

The audience was very happy with Ali’s remarks and endorsed his point of view by a big round of applause. Shaan has played a very important role in bringing Pakistani cinema forward but Ali won the audience’s heart in this incident.

Lets not forget that Shaan has been asked to work in many Bollywood ventures but he refused all of them. He was also asked to play the role of the villain in the film “Ghajini”.

Pehchaan- Episode 3 Review

0

pehchAAN

Through a series of flashbacks we get an insight into Laila’s background. Rushed into marriage by her mother who feared her fate would be similar to that of her spinster phuppi, Laila gave in to her mother’s pressure. Kya shaadi hi zindagi ki top priority hai? Laila had ambitions to pursue her scholarship in Paris- ambitions her father was willing to support. Though her mother stated that she continues to struggle for acceptance with her in-laws, its seems that she has the final word in all matters of her home. Tum khush nahin ho Laila, mein tumhari aankehn par sakta houn. Yet, despite being upset, Laila’s father was incapable of stopping or even delaying the wedding for that matter.

The repeated mention of bari and zewar signals that there’s trouble ahead. I was amused to note that even Mansoor was part of the petty conversation that involved comparing the baraat vs valima functions. Laila seems oblivious to her surroundings but Mansoor’s cousin’s admonition is not something she should take lightly- Kahin Mansoor Bhai hamdardi mein ulajh gaye toh… As it is, we’ve been seeing far too many instances of men being swayed by this forbidden h word. The slightest attention by Mansoor gives Laila the confidence to express her feelings towards her Shareek e Hayat in the form of a poem she fondly pens for him. Laila’s emotions as a coy, new bride has been captured to perfection- every time her heart flutters upon seeing Mansoor, she blushes and breaks into a shy smile.

En06N

Ever since his wedding, Kuku has been avoiding Mansoor. He comes by unannounced at her salon and is startled to see Khurram there who seems like a desperate insurance salesman rather than a businessman as he haughtily states. This triggers the jealous button and Mansoor warns her- Tum kuch bhi karlo Kuku, I’m not going anywhere. I liked the cold shoulder treatment she gave Mansoor- the tension between them was portrayed seamlessly. Kuku despises Khurram- she reacts over every crumb he leaves behind yet despite her frustrations she has allowed Khurram to stay with her. Is Khurram keeping her afloat while she fights her inner demons and tries to break free from Mansoor?

Pehchaan Episode 3 Part 2

So far, I have to admit this drama has my undivided attention. The story arouses my curiosity, I’m looking forward to a showdown between the two leading ladies- both very talented actresses but I must admit I’m quite unhappy with the choice of supporting actors- Khurram has no expressions and his constant use of jaan seems forced. The boy who was filming Laila while she was in her mayyoun seems related to Khurram since his banno raani sounded like someone slapped him into saying it. Other than that, I would rate this high as of now. I hope I don’t have to eat my words! What do you have to say about today’s episode?

P.S I’m covering for Fatima again this week but hopefully she’ll continue reviewing from next week. Please leave your comments below.

Yours in watching,

Koi Nahi Apna – Episode 4

0

Hamza! Don’t you get the message? Alvira does not want expensive gifts she wants your time!!! Alvira and Hamza’s marital problems have old and boring written all over them. Hamza is too busy and Alvira feels ignored. The script of the play lacks depth and novelty. It is a story that has been done-to-death and the treatment is run-of-the-mill too. Alvira and Hamza don’t have any compatibility issues but the only “issue” is that Hamza has to give his career more time because his professional life has just started, which in my opinion is understandable. He also feels obligated to provide Alvira with a certain lifestyle because of her background. Alvira is well educated, she could also work, that would have kept her busy and both of them could save money. I hate to see an educated girl sitting at home waiting for her husband to come back home when she could be doing something more useful with her life!! I hate to say this but Alvira’s problems came across as self created for most part of the episode. I am sure her mother in law could do the household chores or she could have hired a maid out of the money she earned!

kna3

There were no fireworks when Alvira met her mother after a long time; I expected a little more excitement and emotions. The restaurant they went to looked like a college canteen and the same place was used to shoot Alvira and Hamza’s anniversary dinner scene. The director did not put in enough effort to shoot these scenes in appropriate locations. Sometimes I feel like the producers did not invest much in the play or the director has his hands full with too many projects which he has to look after. Like I said in my last review, the feel of the drama is monotonous and dull because of the usual locations we see every week. Alvira and her mother never talked about ways to reconcile things so that Alvira could be in touch with her parents again but it was good to see Alvira’s mother trying to convince her father to “forgive” her later on. I must say though that Alvira’s mother’s concern for her seemed fake primarily because of the over acting.

kna5

The roothna/manana looked really cute in the promos but watching Hamza make tea and breakfast all the time makes it look like a “Here Is Your Ideal Husband” commercial! All through this episode I was waiting for Hamza’s mother to make an appearance in these 6 months that passed in the first half of this episode but she was nowhere to be seen! Alvira was expecting 6 months back too but she didn’t look any different on the anniversary.

kna1

Honestly speaking I felt for Hamza more than Alvira in tonight’s episode and I must say that this is the only aspect of the play which I like. For a change I can actually relate to the difficulties the male protagonist is going through in a marriage. I wonder if this was intentional or maybe I am the only one who is looking at the story in this way. I hate to say this but Alvira’s complains are really childish – understandable yet childish! “I am pregnant, don’t mess with me” says it all! I expected Alvira to call her mother when she did not get through to Hamza but somehow she didn’t. How can a girl not think of her mother in such a time? Doesn’t Alvira have any friends? What is life without family! A girl should never expect her husband to make up for the absence of her parents, that is definitely one thing all girls should know! There were times when Sarwat Gillani actually disappointed me with her acting in this latest episode.

kna2

Overall this latest episode was fast paced as usual but there were barely any scenes that clicked with me. I was hoping that Fahad Mustafa and Sarwat Gillani’s chemistry will win me over but the script and the direction is so average that nothing seems to be standing out at the moment.

Youm-i-Shuhda, the day to remember martyrs of motherland

30th April is celebrated as day to remember those who sacrificed their lives in defense of motherland. Our country is facing a war like situation for more than a decade costing more than 50,000 lives of civilians and defense forces. The causalities of security forces is even higher than the collective loss of three wars it fought against India.

Askari Bank, a bank where army is also a share holder has released a music video to pay tribute to all martyrs who laid their lives to protect us. Though no words can pay back the sacrifice of our sons, they truly deserve respect and honor from us.

Izteraab – Episode 05!

0

Ohkay, this episode didn’t give much in regards to the story but yes, gave us a lot of reasons to loathe Jazib Jee.

Zara & Nano’s conversation gave us an insight that Zara has been struggling with the responsibilites ever since Sophia was in pre-school. So what was Jazib doing all these years? For a moment I felt that at least Zara might cross Jazib’s mind but seems like he’s pretty much settled with his new wife & doesn’t really care how his kids are dealing with the change. As per him, they are just kids when Dua complains but on the other hand he expects them to act & understand everything maturely which I feel is completely selfish of him.

Very easily Jazib told Dua that she needs to have a firm hand on the kids as they are becoming ill-mannered, so I am guessing, apart from the office hours, he has so much time to spend with the kids, so why doesn’t he teach them what they need to learn because he’s their, uh what’s the word FATHER I guess!!! How very conveniently Jazib labeled his kids as batameez, but when it came down to him, he tossed his share of responsibility on Dua as well that now she needs to look after every single thing, starting from their morning alarms to their upbringing to their garam garam parathas.

While looking at Dua & listening to the conversations she had with Jazib, I kept on wondering Masterchef Pakistan is starting just at the right time, because now she’d be getting so many ideas as to what she must cook for her Jazib Jee every single day, isn’t it interesting? I know she is having a hard time with the kids & they are giving her a tough time as well but are we ever going to hear her talk about anything other than the kids or the food?

Khala Masooma had a short say in this episode & now looks like she went back to her husband so as to understand how step-moms & second wives roll. That’s how she is learning the art of dealing with the second wife & she gives on the pointers to her daughter Dua because she’s in the same spot & she thinks by relating her experience to Dua’s position she can teach her how to make the kids love her. I am glad Sophia’s doing everything possible to make Dua lose her calm.

I don’t know but I felt there were too many shots of Jazib & Dua resting in their room. I don’t know but I feel that much coziness was unsightly. We know the drill, they both have gotten married & Jazib is now sleeping peacefully after eating a good meal he was waiting for his whole life, but to actually show those shots over & over again was unnecessary. I guess they can only show Dua in the frame but now they even had some conversations on the bed which made me upset, I mean things can be shown out of the bed & out of the room so why so much emphasis on shaneel ki maroon blanket & ruffled up hair?

As always, I felt for Zara a lot more. She was upset & she was thinking about Jazib too. It’s like in this separation, the only person at loss was Zara because Jazib is still in the same home, with his kids & totally happy with his new-found chef/wife/babysitter/kinoo peeler & what not. But the only person who’s suffering the most is Zara. I don’t know if there’s a stop to her miseries but seeing her spend time with her kids was definitely a highlight of the episode topped up with the perfect dialogue that she said to Dua which was ‘ja k khana banao’. Dua’s response was quick & seems like she has started to unwind pretty qucikly too. Let’s see what happens next.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Drama Of The Week- Tum Ho Kay Chup

thkc1

On the recommendation of one of our readers, I decided to watch a drama I hadn’t heard of. I admit I have started watching dramas fairly recently (just over 5 years ago) but I have tried to catch up with as many as I can. Tum Ho Kay Chup was my pick this week. I’m surprised this name never came up in any of the drama discussions I’ve read although the cast certainly deserves a watch.

Background
Written by Asghar Nadeem Syed, directed by Haseeb Hassan, Tum Ho Kay Chup aired on GEO Entertainment in 2011. Some of the main actors were Abid Ali (Sardaar Jamaal Khan), Hina Khwaja Bayat (Bibi Jaanam), Humayoun Saeed (Mir Zaraar Khan), Ayesha Khan (Mishal), Fizza Ali (Parivarsh), Tehreem Zuberi (Bibi Zaytoun), Zeba Ali (Bibi Gulbano), Hina Dilpazeer (Saazein Bibi), Syed Jibran (Nomi), Faisal Shah (Birbal), Zarrar Khan (Sikander), Sehroze Sabzwari (Zeeshan).

Not all fairy-tales have a happy ending

Mishal was a British citizen of Pakistani heritage. She was born and raised in London and grew up in a liberal environment. Her parents were both practicing doctors and she was an only child. Her childhood sweetheart, Nomi secretly admired her but never expressed his true feelings- Darpok aadmi mohabbat nahin kar sakta hai. She met Zaraar in University and felt she found her prince. And a prince he was- Mir Zaraar was heir to the ruling tribe in the Federally Administered Tribal Area in Balochistan. After a quick wedding in London, Mishal was ecstatic at the prospect of visiting Pakistan with her new husband and discovering the rich and vibrant culture. Upon landing, she got her first culture shock- she was expected to cover her head and face in public. Mishal complied thinking this was a temporary situation and soon she would be back in her hometown. Little did she know her mini- vacation would turn into her worst nightmare. Mishal was quickly ushered to the female quarters and she was introduced to Zaraar’s mother- Bibi Jaanam who was of Iranian origin. She was surprized to find that Zaraar also had a step mom, Bibi Zaytoun- a much younger woman who belonged to a tribe. Mishal befriended Parivarsh, a baandi- a young girl who had taken refuge with Sardaar Jamaal Khan. She was fascinated with the traditional garments and the accessories and enjoyed dressing up in the fancy garbs. But soon, she started feeling restless- she had no access to a phone since Zaraar told her that they had installed jammers to protect them from their enemies. She was shocked at the tribal, barbaric ways of life, the rules the people lived by, the jirgah system, the treatment of women in general and the cruel punishment that ensued. Even more since she knew Zaraar and both his parents were educated abroad. Mishal was devastated when she found out that Zaraar had a wife before her- Bibi Gulbaano who acting on her jealousy, tried to poison her. Gulbaano was sentenced to being chained up in the underground jail where Bibi Saazein, Zaraar’s Phuppo had been living for years. Realizing that Zaraar had no hidden motives, she started retaliating. By then she discovered that she was pregnant and she wanted to abort the child. She felt trapped and couldn’t imagine a lifetime of imprisonment.

The Great Escape

Sardaar Jamaal Khan takes Parivarsh as his third wife. Mishal is repulsed by the thought of it and tries to help her. She knows that Parivarsh had a lover, Birbal who belonged to another tribe and was not born to nobility. Birbal manages to get hired by Sardaar Jamaal Khan and he tries to convince Parivarsh to run away with him. Instead, she seeks his help in helping Mishal escape. Mishal almost gets away but is captured and returned. She is treated even worse than before and starts losing her mind. Her attempt at harming her unborn baby causes her to go into early labour and a new heir is born. She begs Zaraar to keep the baby and set her free. Instead Zaraar reminds her that it is her duty to raise his son. After many failed attempts, Mishal’s parents manage to meet her briefly. They promise her that they will try everything in their power to rescue her. Try as they may, they fail to reach a negotiation with Sardaar Jamaal Khan. Waada sardaar ka paband hota hai, sardaar wadey ka nahin! The marriage was a sham- it was part of an elaborate plan to allow them some leverage in negotiating British visas for their tribesmen and a better quality of life. Sardaar Jamaal divorces Parivarsh after finding out she helped Mishal escape and returns her to her Chacha and his son, Sikander. Parivarsh convinces Sikander to arrange for Mishal’s escape as an act of revenge for her mistreatment. Bibi Jaanam helps Mishal escape a second time and luckily she gets away. She returns to London with her son and after tries to move on with the help of Nomi. When she agrees to marrying him, Zaraar has him killed and warns her that he will harm her parents too if she ever thinks of a second marriage.

Sardaari har rishtey se upar hai

Furious at Bibi Jaanam’s role in Mishal’s escape, Sardaar Jamaal orders for her to be buried alive. Zaraar tries to beg his father for mercy but his pleas fall on deaf ears. After the death of his mother, Zaraar feels torn between his sardaari and his love for his mother. His weakness is exploited by Sikander who has him killed. Sardaar Jamaal Khan gets paralyzed after the death of his only son. After a span of 20 years, Mishal decides to return with her son, Zeeshan who is the only living heir, on the condition that the people will welcome change and embrace it.

Final Verdict

The drama reminded me of Fawad Khan/ Emaan’s track in Khuda Ke Liye. The title was rather unusual- Tum Ho Kay Chup but had a deep message- Zulm Ko Bardaasht Karne Wala, Zaalim Ke Haath Ko Mazboot Karta Hai. The story had suspense and kept me hooked. It was the story of a woman’s journey for freedom and the women who helped her along the way- even at the cost of their own lives. There was an overpowering notion of male chauvinism, discrimination, and rebellion. However, the editing wasn’t anywhere near what I had hoped- sloppy in parts, lacking continuity and random at times. Some of the scenes were repeated more than once which showed a lack of creativity. The last episode was extremely disappointing since most of it was a recollection of the previous 20 episodes- the recap didn’t serve a purpose and after following a strong storyline for 20 episodes, I was rooting for a greater impact at the end. On the plus side were the powerful performances-Abid Ali nailed the role as the unforgiving, ruthless Sardaar and looked the part. Hina Khwaja Bayat was the epitome of grace and beauty despite being in full hijaab– I loved her Persian accent. Humayoun Saaed did exceptionally well as Mir Zaraar- I hated him with all my heart! Ayesha Khan gave a spellbinding performance as Mishal. And I really liked Bibi Zaytoun as the scheming second wife of Sardaar Jamaal Khan. There was great attention to costumes and accessories and the interiors were done very well. If only they had paid equal attention to other details. Despite certain flaws, I must admit that this was a compelling watch with a unique storyline that managed to hold my attention and kept me wanting to watch on. If you haven’t watched it, do give this a try and let me know what you think. It won’t be remembered as phenomenal or mind-blowing, but it certainly deserves a watch- which is more than what I can say for many of the recent dramas.

Yours in watching,

Kanwal Murtaza

Bikhra Mera Naseeb, new drama of Geo

Ayeza Khan and Sami Khan starred in recently concluded ‘Do Qadam Dur They’, a play from Geo TV, which was quite popular (as per Geo TV). To earn more from this duck which lays golden eggs  i.e. hit pair of Sami Khan and Ayeza Khan, Geo TV is coming with new drama ‘Bikhra Mera Naseeb’, to be aired at 9 pm on every friday and saturday from 2nd May 2014.

The drama is written by Salma Younis and directed by Furqan Khan (director of Mere Humrahi). The cast consists of Sami Khan, Ayeza Khan, Aleezey Rasul, Feeroz Khan,Shehriyar Zaidi, Seemi Pasha, Ismat Zaidi, Saba Hameed, Mehmood Akhter, Tariq Jameel & Many others

While Sami Khan is a famous ‘bechara’ and Ayeza Khan is famous for such roles too, this drama is expected to be like ‘bechargi ki inteha’, but promos are telling some different story. Ayeza’s character in drama has a negative shade, but Sami Khan is still a ‘bechara’ in this drama. Ayeza is perhaps appearing as a spoiled child (bigra bacha) or egoistic person.

Enjoy the promo and few clicks for this upcoming drama

Gossips about upcoming film Namaaloom Afraad

Namaaloom Afraad (Unknown persons) is an upcoming film being shot in Karachi these days. It is expected to be released later this year, and is based on situation of Karachi. The cast consists of Fahad Mustafa, Salman Shahid , Javed Sheikh and others. The producer  is yet to make any public statement about this project but press report revealed this film is on situation of Karachi. Fahad Mustafa the lead character is also silent about this film.

As per report of Urdu Weekly Akhbar-e-Jehan, Fahad was not very confident about this film, even considering it as a routine film. It all changed when a real bus and car were crashed in a shooting sequence, and Fahad is now proudly telling that he is working in a high budgeted movie.

The film also had an item song filmed on Meera, for which full payments were paid too. However when the producer watched the rushes of item song, Meera appeared dull, colorless and aged, the results were against what was expected. Instead of going after reclaiming the paid amount, the producer persuaded Mehwish Hayat for the same item song, who justified her selection. Pleased with her performance the producer has increased the role of Mehwish and now she can be seen in few scenes with villain Salman Shahid too.

So now the film is important for film career of both mehwish and fahad.

Pyarai Afzal – Episode 21 & 22

0

Pyarai Afzal is the only show airing these days whose single episode is unaffordable for me to miss. Story is now sounding more like a love rectangle rather than a triangle.. :P Pehlay Farah, than Lubna and now Yasmeen. Lubna’s Lahoo Moo lag gaya must be the tagline of previous episode. I mean that episode was more about Ramleela than Farah,Afzal or Lubna. Unnecessary, inclusion of dialogues related to the movie could have been avoided but again for the fun sake, I took them casually because I was enjoying even Ramleela’s discussion too.

This show is way too much unpredictable man. Firstly, it was all about those letters mystery which is still a secret buried deep inside Afzal’s heart ; And now , this whole Lubna sequence. All I am thinking is that it is nothing but Lubna’s strategy to compel Farah to speak her heart out and confess that she is in love with Afzal. Farah’s rage is clearly depicting her inside out; The way she is reacting to every action Lubna takes regarding Afzal is more than enough for us to know that Farah loves Afzal but she is resisting to tell anybody and more than that she is not ready to accept the fact herself ;Peak of her anger was shown when she heard Lubna humming the song and broke the window.

Yasmeen is a very interesting character added to the show in recent episodes; Though, Sohai was never my favorite actress still, I am enjoying every scene of her – she looks way too good in this role. So, this is my request to Sohai Ali that next time try to experiment with her acting skills rather than sticking to one particular “rota dhota role”. The pink lipstick, loud blush suits her character well and her confession infront of her mother told us that she is in no way flirting with Afzal and is seriously interested in getting married to him.

Our Afzal is looking literally “pyarai” in that security guard uniform. His decision regarding his job was right to an extent that he shouldnot wait for opportunity to knock out at his door rather he should go out and fetch for the opportunity – No matter how long it takes and by adopting which way he will become “Afzal” .

Mehtaab’s re-entry in the show made me happy again. This time he is completely transformed man ; He is looking elegant and poised rather than sounding like a goofy as before. The way he made Afzal realize about where he is standing right now being Farah’s admirer was nothing more than his way of taking revenge from him.

Mehtaab called Farah and Lubna picked up but point is that despite of saying again and again that she is not Farah but Lubna , Mehtaab got easily tricked by Lubna..At that point, I thought that he was only pretending to be different, deep inside he is still a goofy bal k bechara maasoom he hai and everyone can play with his emotions just like that. Seriously, I felt bad for him when Lubna said that she will reconsider her and he become happy thinking the fact that Farah will reconsider her again.

By the way, was that beep really necessary during Lubna and Mehtaab’s call? I mean their lips can easily be read and the words they uttered were not different from what they use frequently.

Without any doubt, dialogues are the soul of this show and credit goes to Khalil ur Rehmaan; He penned down every dialogue beautifully and not only they sound good but they are equally meaningful too. The way Afzal’s mother changed her mood ,when Farah’s mother visited her and told her that they will help them in finding Afzal, clearly described her longing for her son.

Now that Lubna knows exactly where Afzal is , I am guessing that story is heading towards its end. Last scene of today’s episode was too hard for me to digest. Are they actually planning for a sad ending ? Honestly, it would be unbearable for me to watch Afzal die; Maybe, he was wearing a bullet – proof jacket because he was in his uniform.. :P

Pakistan Idol – The Journey’s Recap!

0

Ohkay, on a request of a dear reader I sighted the mood to write an overview about the very first season of Pakistan Idol. I must say that when it started, we all had inhibitions & preconceived notions but as the season went along, the fever of Pakistan Idol took it’s toll on us all & convinced us to follow it through.

As always, when it started, it took us a little time to swallow the fact that reality show has hit our TV screens. Some labeled it as rigged, some labeled it as pre-planned but I am glad now when the season has ended, we have nothing but great things to say about the very first season of Pakistan Idol.

1

I must say when it began, the judges came across as a bit stern & rude in the auditions & it looked like they were belittling every single person that came in for the auditions, even those who meant business were underestimated & the only judge who seemed to be doing so was Ali Azmat. Ali Azmat at times even showed disinterest & labeled the females judges as biased when they picked female auditionees but as more episodes went on-air, people got hold of Ali Azmat’s temperament & understood his humorous side a bit more. I must say the judge who actually seemed to be doing her part really well was Hadiqa Kiyani as she was always honest & to the point in her judgments (in the beginning). Bushra Ansari has to be the only judge who got criticized a lot because she didn’t suit the seat of a judge being an actress. I really didn’t understand what she was doing in the singing competition & the mystery remains even now when the show has ended.

2

The auditions were great but the best episode of the auditions for me has to be the one shot in Peshawar. It’s like the Peshawar city auditions showed some culture in the music & the Pushto folk was brought into the limelight as well whereas the rest of the cities no doubt helped surfacing some amazing contestants but the culture of the music was missing. A lot of people came for the singing but we got to see a lot of those as well who came to share a screen-time with no talent to their credit whatsoever. At times it did look like some of the auditionees were paid to bring in the comic quotient because they seemed too fake to be true but I must confess some of the unpaid auditionees who had faith in themselves & were oblivious of them being talent-free were tackled with a lot of care by Ali Azmat. He just knew what he had to do with that lot of over-confident lads & lasses & it was actually really funny.

3

We got amazing 86 voices but only a few got to qualify to the next round. A lot of good ones were left behind & then the Piano rounds started where 4 out of 8 would qualify for the next round. This was the time when the public voting started & they got to choose 3 contestants whereas the judges selected 1 one of them as well. That was the time when people started finding who’d they be rooting for in the Galas.

The real journey of the competition began in the Gala rounds & some really strong contenders were eliminated in the beginning because of the lack of votes. I must say by this time we got to see the real judging of the judges because it was only Ali Azmat who stayed true to his seat & supported when the contestants needed to be supported but also nitpicked when it was required. Bushra Ansari doesn’t even count as a judge because her say didn’t matter but by this time Hadiqa Kiyani started losing the plot & she involved herself in the unfair support of certain contestants earning herself a label of being biased & unfair. Shahmir Aziz Quidwai & Sana Zulfikar had a strong fan base & sustained a lot of weeks despite missing the spark whereas Waqas Ali, Mehwish Maqsood, Syed Sajjid Abbas & Asad Raza Sonu’s early elimination left everyone disheartened.

I know people raised questions on the authenticity of the elimination decisions & believed that the number of votes had no say in the process of elimination but as the weeks passed it started to get a bit more clear that where people were voting for their favorites, they were also not ignoring the considerable mistakes the contestants were making while singing. Anyhow the season ended where Zamad Baig emerged as a winner making Mohammad Shoaib as a runner up but this very first season of Pakistan Idol paved a way for the success of a reality TV in Pakistan.

I must say even though I was excited when I heard about Pakistan Idol but I was a bit skeptical seeing the very first episodes but as the show went along, I became an avid fan & a supporter & the long discussions under the reviews showed people were actually enjoying the season a lot. No doubt that the first season was larger than life & more professional than our expectations. A lot of homework was put into it & all that effort shined but there’s always a room for improvements so I’d like to state a few of the changes the Pakistan Idol team needs to & must make in the next season.

I hope that we get to see some other judges. Ali Azmat right in the beginning tweeted that he has signed a 3 year contract with the franchise so it goes without saying that we’d be seeing more of him & now I know people won’t mind him being the judge because he was fair through out. Now when one judge’s been taken care of we do have a slot of 2 seats open for some new judges & hands down I’d want to see Sajjad Ali embrace the seat of Pakistan Idol judge because his timely presence showed he deserved to be on the seat of a permanent judge & not a guest judge. A female judge is a necessity in the Idol show so I hope we do get to see someone else on that seat. Someone who can connect well with the contestants & someone who stays true to the judging seat without involving herself in an unnecessary favoritism. I feel next time a suitable name for the female judge would be of Farieha Parvaiz as she is a renowned singer & has earned herself a fan following too. I also hope that we don’t get to see any drama-actor acting like a judge & a panel is filled with all three judges belonging to the music industry. I hope that next time the judges give out some real technical judgments & show their own caliber as singers too. This time around I can only point out Sajjad Ali as the one who spoke about the performances in technicality whereas the rest of the judges never really did it.

5

Now coming onto the auditionees & the contestants, I think every single fan & follower of the show would appreciate if we ONLY get to hear Pakistani songs starting from the auditions till the Finale. As the name suggests, this is PAKISTAN IDOL & we need them to promote Pakistani Music. No doubt in Indian Idol contestants do sing Shafqat Amanat Ali’s, Atif Aslam’s, RFAK’s songs but they sing those songs because they belong to the Bollywood movies, so when it comes to Pakistan Idol I’d hope they’d stick to the songs sung by Pakistani singers & the team gives a special consideration to it & a briefing to all those who’re appearing in the auditions.

Last but not the least a tribute to all the genres. This time around we got more of themes in the galas but hardly got any specific genre to which a whole episode was dedicated to. During the discussions, we got to know that people actually wanted to see more of the genres being covered every week that would push the contestants out of their comfort zones but it just didn’t happen. The only three genres that were covered in this season were Pop, Bhangra & Qawwali & I must say these were the stand out episodes obviously Sajjad Ali’s episode topping the list of ‘the best’ episode. No doubt the guest judges contributed a lot but the next time it would be good to see the guest judges train the contestants for each & every genre that the episode is based on. Another tiny little detail that I feel I must mention is that next time I hope they don’t invite female dancers in the grand finale because this time they didn’t contribute much in the background even because this is a singing show & I feel it’s unnecessary to objectify females in this accord as it was pretty useless.

So, this was the whole journey which gave us an insight of how many talented singers are there in Pakistan. This thing definitely needs a special mention that in Pakistan there isn’t that much of a trend where those who are interested in singing go to proper teachers for learning & refining the skill. This time around too there was a huge percentage of those contestants who sang it based on their own talent without the help of a professional, which is definitely a big thing & for this we need to support our talent & be proud of it.

People did stir a debate on the provinces to which the remaining contestants belonged to & I feel it’s a high time we need to show solidarity. If not on a large scale but at least on a TV show level because now when Zamad Baig has won, he will always be remembered as a Pakistan Idol & the respective provinces of the contestants won’t give them a special title to attach to their names & for this I absolutely loved what Mohammad Shoaib said in his last vote appeal that he got the encouragement & the respect from the whole Pakistan & not only from his province therefore he was fighting to become a Pakistan Idol & not a Pukhtun Idol.

It indeed was a very amazing experience & now when it has ended & while looking back at it, it does look like a great journey which gave the audience a lot of things to be emotionally attached to. Share what you felt about the very first season of Pakistan Idol. :)

Merai Humdum Merai Dost – Episode 1 & 2

0

Merai Humdum Merai Dost is the play I was looking forward from the day when I came to know that Farhat Ishtiaq’s Best Seller Novel will be dramatized & as soon as I came to know that one of my favorite TV artists,Sanam Jung, will be doing Umm-e-Aiman’s role, I was the happiest girl on earth. Being directed by, Shehzad Kashmiri and Produced by Momina Duraid, Merai Humdum Merai Dost will be aired every friday at 9pm only on URDU1. Now that we are done with formal intro of the show,Lets start with the characters introduction.

Taufeeq Kamaal (Farhan Ali Agha) was married to Zainab for many years but their marital life didnot work for them as Taufeeq was obsessed with success and beauty and according to him, Zainab lacked both of them. He demanded separation from Zainab but poor Zainab pledged for mercy and it was only because of their daughter Umm-e-Aiman (Sanam Jung), Taufeeq let both of them go out of his life without giving divorce to Zainab. Like typical eastern wives, Zainab loved her husband even when he left her and Aiman all alone in this gigantic world. While on the other hand, Taufeeq got married once again to Almaas (Zainab Qayyum);the type of girl for whom he actually anticipated throughout his life.

For Aiman, her father is nothing but a name that facilitates her whenever she has to fill an application form; She hates him and even asks her mother that she should hate her even more than her. Zainab was fighting with a deathly disease and Aiman tried every possible way out to help her mother and at-last, Zainab gave her life up. From those scenes when Zainab’s state went serious till her last breath, Sanam Jung’s acting was near to perfection. Her mother was whole world for her and now that she is no more, Aiman felt completely doomed.

According to the promise she made to her mother that she will go to her father after her death, Aiman tried to make up her mind but she failed every-time she attempted to do so. She knew that even after her refusal, she has to leave because there is no way out except going to her father. It was really sad to see how Taufeeq didnot pay much heed to his daughter and focused more at his foreign trip.

Haider (Adnan Siddiqui),middle aged man with a very serious and realistic approach towards life, is one of the closest friends and colleague of Taufeeq Kamaal. Haider was given responsibility of Aiman till Taufeeq and Almaas won’t return back. On her way to the land of his father with Haider, Aiman was completely shattered and broken from inside. She is the one who lost her mother and just after losing her, she was going to live with a person whom she hated throughout her life and sad but true, that man was her father. Or uss se bhi barh kar ye k he wasnot there to attend her when she was expecting him to be there to console her during the hardest time of her life. Though, Haider tried every possible way to make her feel comfortable but he was a stranger for her and she didnot pay any attention to what he did and what he say.

Another side track in this story is of Sajeela (Hareem Farooq) and Mazhar (Junaid Khan). Mazhar comes from middle class where Sajeela was once a part of rich family. They tried every possible way out to get married to each other and luckily, they succeeded. But soon after their marriage nothing remained same; Maybe its Mazhar’s guilt of not fulfilling Sajeela’s desires and because of that he is having inferiority complex or maybe its something else that will be revealed later – whatever the reason maybe it is sounding as if their marital life is nothing but a compromise with one sided effort of Sajeela for making things better.

First two episodes were too good as far as introduction is concerned. I literally loved the background score – At times, it sounded like Turkish serials BS too. Direction was perfect and all artists played their part perfectly well.

What is your say about introductory episodes of MHMD ?

Rabia Basharat.

P.S. Apologies for reviewing it late.. :)

Marasim – Episode 05!

0

Another week of a decent episode of Marasim. I am glad they have taken enough time in establishing the characters because by doing so they have been able to make us understand more about them. I feel the characters are getting more relate-able & the direction seems perfect ever since they’re done with the flashbacks.

This episode focused more on Nayab, her life & her character. After losing her mother, Almas has forced Nayab to stay with her because she has no one else who’d look after her. Nayab & Zaid being first cousins are emotionally involved with each other where everyone in their family knows of their relation & pretty much approves of it. Zaid is a humble & caring person who loves Nayab a lot. He is Nayab’s support system & she knows she can rely on him any time because he truly loves her & cares for her. Right now they both are waiting for Zaid to get settled after his CSS so after that they’d be able to step in a married life together.

Deeba on the other hand has told her mother to fetch a simpleton for Daood who can be bossed around & she’ll be in an awe of how rich he is. Deeba thinks a simple girl from the middle or the lower middle class will buy everything Daood will ever tell her & she will happily compromise whereas a girl belonging to the same social class as them will never mend & will always be rigid. Daood hasn’t found a closure to his break-up yet & he is mentally scattered.

On a short visit to Almas’s place Gaitiara happens to see Nayab & get a glimpse of her nature, sadly Nayab fits the description given by Deeba for Daood’s wife perfectly & just when Nayab visits to hand over Gaitiara’s dress to her, Gaitiara tests Nayab by showing off the wealth & her place. I thought Urwa was brilliant through out the episode but she excelled in this particular scene as well. She made it look like she wasn’t interested or rather she didn’t notice much about her surroundings but just to satisfy Gaitiara’s pompous ego, she kept on adding more to it by appreciating all the ‘material’ Gaitiara owned.

I felt the whole ‘suit dhoondho’ scene was a bit over-done & a bit dragged. I mean if Nayab couldn’t find it Almas should’ve gotten up to help her in finding the suit. At one point Almas has all her sympathies with her innocent younger sister but on the other hand she thinks it’s ohkay to boss her over just because she wants to prove a point to her mother in law that Nayab is not a burden on them & is helping with the household chores.

I must say after Daood & Momenah’s character, I have started to like & feel a lot for the character of Nayab & for a change it’s good to see Urwa Hocane doing something different. She has portrayed the feelings of Nayab perfectly & is fitting the role really well. Apart from the suit scene & Daood’s unnecessary caterwauling, I found the whole episode very interesting. They are taking it slow but definitely have a control over the script because the direction seems perfect. Can’t wait to find out more.

Bay Emaan Mohabbat- Episode 12 & 13

bemm

The drama has finally started to move forward- better late than never I suppose! Dania broke off her engagement with Naeem- she used her father’s illness as an excuse but her parents have started realizing that he probably wasn’t what they had thought. Naeem in turn goes and blurts out to Sobia about Baber and Dania’s affair. Babar hates being cornered and has finally started showing his true colors- he was never man enough to marry Dania but he liked spending time with her- she was just the sort of distraction he needed in his life. Men like Baber are too afraid of taking a stand for themselves since they are entirely dependent on their family for support. Dania was confident that Baber loved her but she was in for a rude awakening.

Sobia, though devastated, took it in her stride with dignity- she is trapped and knows that Baber doesn’t have the guts to call off the engagement and even though he mistreats her, he’s the only man she has ever loved. It’s hard sometimes when families arrange marriages ahead of time- young girls grow up fantasizing about their cousins as their perfect soul mates and when reality takes over, they are left helplessly lost and confused. Baber knows his father would sooner disown him than call off his engagement with Sobia and he sees no way out which is what drew him towards staring an affair with Dania. But seeing Dania dumping Naeem made him cautious since he knew Dania would try and force him into a commitment.

EVizA

With Qazi Saheb’s paralysis, Dania has to start seeking employment opportunities to support her family. She drops off her resume at Nabeel’s work and runs into him. No sparks fly since she’s not exactly up for small talk and Nabeel doesn’t seem too impressed by her either. Maria, however, is wary of hiring a typical social climber and would rather take a chance on a newbie like Dania than have another seasoned secretary try and seduce Nabeel. Maria thinks that by keeping women at bay, she is safeguarding her marriage but little does she know, Nabeel isn’t devoted to her- he is devoted to her money! Maria continues pressing Nabeel to agree to adoption but he flatly refuses saying he doesn’t want any children except his own.

Now that Dania will be hired as Nabeel’s PA, will she turn to him on a rebound or will she play hard to get? Dania always wanted a comfortable life and Nabeel could be her ticket to riches. Will she let Baber off the hook for deceiving her? This is where it starts to get interesting. Looking forward to next week.

Yours in watching,

Kanwal Murtaza

Pakistan Idol – Grand Finale! :D

0

Congratulations to Zamad Baig & his supporters on his win. :)

This is it from the very first & the very successful season of Pakistan Idol. They gave us an amazing finale episode packed with a lot of memorable performances & gracious guests who gratified the stage with their presence. Abida Parveen, Hamid Ali Khan, Sajjad Ali, Ali Zafar were invited to be a part of this memorable journey & it was a treat to see them all but the highlight of the whole episode for me has to be Sajjad Ali performing ‘Sohni Lagdi’.

Of all the performances, my least favorite were of Hadiqa Kiyani & Bushra Ansari. As much as I am sad that Pakistan Idol is ending, I am glad that I won’t get to see in fact tolerate Bushra Ansari on the weekly basis that too twice a week. I think she seriously needs some counselling because of the obvious reasons & like they say last but not the least, her last appreance on the stage of Pakistan Idol was not a least bit normal.

It was good to see all the eliminated contestants & I was actually really happy to see Syed Sajjid Abbas, Mehwish Maqsood, Rosemary, Asad Raza Sonu, Ali Asad Zaidi & Abdul Rafay Khan again on the stage. Their performances were pre-recorded but they were great because in a very short time they paid tribute to the Pakistani music & fulfilled the purpose of this stage because it belongs to Pakistani music.

So, this was it from the very first season of Pakistan Idol. No doubt being the very first launch of the franchise, they did justice to the whole format & made it larger than life but I hope in the next season we do get some other judges who not only judge but mentor the contestants along the way. I also hope that the team behind Pakistan Idol would pay more attention to explore more genres of music as a challenge to the contestants every week. This time around, no doubt they set different themes & moods but never really gave a room to the contestants to come out of their comfort zones in order to experiment with the different genres. More or less they let the contestants establish their styles & excel in them over & over again.

This would be an understatement to say that the episode which was based on the actual genre of the music like Qawwali has to be the most memorable episode of the whole season followed by the patriotic themed episode. The way they invited guest judges for the mentoring was definitely great & Sajjad Ali & Ali Zafar stood out the most but I hope next time they’d let the guest judges mentor the contestants on specific genres too.

So, with this & with Zamad Baig’s win, Pakistan Idol comes to an end. It’s a celebration time for his supporters because he did really well through out the season. The list of the songs he has performed that paved the way for his success is as follows:

Auditions: ‘Ye Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai’ – NFAK
Piano Round: ‘Kali Kali Zulfon’ – NFAK
Gala Round 01: ‘Kiya Hai Jo Pyaar To’ – Ahmed Rushdi
Gala Round 02: ‘Mukhray Ton Nazran Hawatan’ – NFAK
Gala Round 03: ‘Khuwaab’ – Ali Azmat
Gala Round 04: ‘Teri Deewani’ – Kailash Kher
Gala Round 05: ‘Mai Tera Hero’ – Mika Singh
Gala Round 06: ‘Sanu Ik Pal’ – NFAK
Gala Round 07: ‘Pakistan Pakistan’ – NFAK
Gala Round 08: ‘Jiya Dharak Dharak Jaye’ – RFAK
Gala Round 09: ‘Dastaan-e-Ishq’ – Ali Zafar
Gala Round 10: ‘Ye Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai’ – NFAK
Gala Round 11: ‘Jatt Charheya Kachehri’ – Abrar ul Haq
Gala Round 11: ‘Soona Soona’ – Ramez Khan
Gala Round 12: ‘Tere Ishq Nachaya’ & ‘Tere Ishq Mein Jo Doob Gaya’ – Saein Akhtar & Allan Faqeer
Gala Round 12: ‘Allah Hu’ – NFAK

I wish all the best to all the top 13 contestants & especially Mohammad Shoaib for standing out the most & proving a point that he is versatile. He has gained a lot of popularity & will be remembered. I wish luck, power & success to Zamad Baig, Mohammad Shoaib & the rest. :)

I thank all those who appreciated my effort & my take on Pakistan Idol & supported me on my reviews.
Till we meet again for the very next season. ;)

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.
