Film Industry Ignored Yet Again

Pakistan film industry is rising from the ashes but it can easily be said that this is because of the sole efforts of the private sector. Our government seems to neglect funding our film industry time and again. Nothing different happened in the Punjab budget this year.

In the recently announced Punjab budget for year 2017-2018, the film industry was neglected as always. Prominent celebrities expressed their anger at this.

The famous director Syed Noor said it was disappointing that the provincial government ignored film industry in the budget. He further said that the authorities should have allocated specific amount for the revival of the cinema in the country.

Veteran actor Ghulam Moinuddin complained that Marriyum Aurangzeb, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting had promised to take steps in the betterment of the film industry but alas, these were just words as it turns out.

Shafaq Cheema, another gem of Pakistan media industry, also seemed outraged over this injustice with the film industry. He lamented that this industry always gets fake pledges and vows. He further expressed that if the government pays serious attention on this matter, then the industry can be taken on the top again.

Javed Sheikh had similar grievances that every year the film industry is promised of funds, development, and every year they are disappointed.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Acting is not an easy job and every one cannot become a star. People who get this status work really hard to reach that point. But many times actors start repeating a same formula because bhai ye bikta hai! What they need to understand is a great actor is whose work shows versatility. To become Leonardo di Caprio and Johnny Depp you have to up your game. Following is a list of Actors/Actresses who definitely need to show versatility as people love to see them and would love even more to see them doing different characters.

Humayun Saeed:

Yes Humayun Saeed is one of the biggest stars of our country. He has ruled the hearts of millions and has always managed to stay relevant and in news. But has Humayun ever shown versatility in his whole career. Maybe a few times as in Kaafir and Main hoon Shahid Afridi (this is mentioned because finally Humayun played a mature person; abba of Shehzad sheikh) but most of the times he is just there as a lover boy (though he is NOT a boy) with an intense smoulder on his face and talking to his heroines standing so closely that the poor soul cannot even breathe. It’s high time that Humayun should start doing roles which match his age and (please!) stop playing lady killer all the time. Humayun has his own production house so he must use it to produce some quality roles for himself.

P.S: He is playing villain in the upcoming movie Yalghaar! We as audience hope that he would experiment more.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Javed Sheikh:

He is a veteran of the industry but he has to understand doing similar roles all the time does not go well with the audience even if you are such a senior actor. Playing Ajeeb o Ghareeb and careless father makes his presence monotonous. Be it Wrong number, Jawani Phirr Nahin Aani, Karachi se Lahore and now I guess Mehrunnisa We Lub You he plays a similar role all the time. I think he should do some serious roles and challenge his forte. Plus the audience will love the change too!

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Maya Ali:

She has shown the world what she is capable of in Aunn Zara and Shanakht but now a days the lady is just seen crying everywhere on the television screens. She cried during the whole Mann Mayal torture and before the Tsunami could go down she again played a cry baby in Sanam. Being a very young actress she has achieved a lot already but she needs to choose some intelligent roles and get away from the buckets she is filling with tears.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Sajal Ali:

She is also contributing towards the improvement of water shortage problem in Pakistan by crying rivers in each of her drama. Be it Aasmanon pe Likha or Chup Raho the lady is always crying. Sajal has a lot of potential which she showcased when she played Maha in the telefilm Behadd; she was so good that one would actually consider her to be a 13 years old teenager not because of her looks but because of her acting skills. Mohobbat Jaye Bhar Main is also an example where Sajal played her character fabulously. Sajal has to recognize her potential and she should do some negative, comical and definitely stronger roles than playing damsel in distress all the time.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Mikal Zulfiqar:

Mikal obviously has a lot of talent and recently he has picked up some intelligent roles but most of the times he plays a confused guy torn between two women and never able to figure out what to do with dear life as his characters are so innocent that they just couldn’t let any woman down but he does realize who he really loves in the last episode of the drama because although he is a confused guy but boy supports monogamy.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

Mahira Khan:

She is a superstar. People love her personality and love every project she does but the fact cannot be denied that she always plays sweet, innocent, bubbly and Mummy aap kya keh rahi hain type roles. As much as she is admired by and influences the audience she should come up with some stronger roles. I think she should seek some inspiration from her contemporaries Saba Qamar and Sanam Saeed. Be it Ho Mann Jahan, Humsafar, Bin Roye and even Raees her roles are almost similar and being the star that she is she should change that.

Fawad Khan:

Many people would like to kill me for this mention but don’t you think Fawad has been doing the young generation Humayun AKA Lover Boy again and again. The difference just lies in the expression where Humayun has THE SMOULDER, Fawad has THE KILLER SMILE. We have seen Fawad’s potential in Khuda Ke Liye and we hope he will floor us with his performance in Maula Jutt and will shake off the extra chocolate of the chocolate hero image he carries.

Actors and Actresses who need to show versatility!

The list would have included Ahsan Khan too but he broke the sterotypic casting with his famous rendition of Paa Imtiaz in Udaari! Others should take inspiration from him. This is my list of Actors and Actresses who need to show some versatility. Feel free to add more!

Portrayal of Women in Pakistani Dramas

Television has played an important part in influencing our society since its introduction to our homes. These days, despite the cyber revolution, television still manages to influence our society greatly. What we see, we believe and implement. Television is a strong force to inform, educate, spread awareness as well as entertain. It also advocates, whether subtly or forcefully, and it definitely affects audience’s thinking process.

Next to news, dramas are what are watched regularly by our people. These dramas are usually family centric and women always seem to play very critical roles in them. The topic I want to delve in today is how are women portrayed in these serials? Are the story-lines progressive or regressive towards women’s position in a society – in our society?

The answer to that, I believe, is both. In the past few years a lot of television drama serials have come out that have empowered women, put them in the position of power, made them more liberal. However, along-side these attributes, they reinforced patriarchal values too. So, all in all, they denounced orthodoxy yet gave flame to patriarchally, as if they can co-exist.

The messages that they deliver are confusing and contradictory. For example, a working woman is classified as an admirable, independent, strong-willed individual of the society yet she is not accepted as part of the society and is treated like an alien. Similarly, a woman is made known to earn education after a lot of hard work and devotion to the cause and she is even encouraged to do so by the writers, yet if a woman has a job better than her husband, earns more than him, the husband feels insecure and this acts as an obstacle to a happy marriage? Should the girl have bothered to work tirelessly to achieve her education when the career she built out of it becomes a problem in her marital life?

The blame of most of the problems in these dramas falls on the woman’s shoulder. For example, if a couple divorces, it is the woman’s fault in the eyes of the society; that she couldn’t keep her husband happy and content with her. The dramas depict this injustice in glory details, making the girls of our country fear the outcome of a divorce and prefer silence even when they are treated brutally by men.

The portrayal of women in Pakistani television serials is far removed from reality. Whenever a man resorts to adultery, the woman is blamed as the temptress; matrimony is glamourized to the extent that the ultimate goal of a girl’s life is to be married and modernism is a bane rather than a boon. These serials reinforce damaging stereotypes about women and project a highly negative image of women. In almost every serial, the implication is that the woman is to be blamed for whatever is wrong in her own life, or even in the life of her family and people she interacts with or is related to.

Dramas, for reasons unknown to me, try to weave the idea that women are supposed to bear pain. In fact, those who bear pain, compromise more than their share, resort to silence rather than raise a voice, show unlimited amount of patience without knowing if it will do any good, are portrayed as the ultimate idols. Why not show women who know their importance, their value, their rights as the heroes?  Women are anything but feeble and weak and it’s time our dramas and our society recognize it, embrace it and extend it.

Another problem that I have with many of today’s serials is that they objectify women. It has become such a norm for our dramas that it is now even presented in the comedic serials! Like, people are actually supposed to laugh at the deterioration of our drama standards. Take ARY’s Bulbulay for example; two men seem to forget everything in their life as soon as they lay eyes on a beautiful girl; as if a woman’s looks are her biggest asset!

The next issue is that these dramas are making it a norm that men shall not take no for an answer. Here is a cliché plotline I am using to support this- a rich, spoilt guy likes a hardworking, self-made girl of middle class upbringing. He is adamant to marry her and despite the girl downright refusing his advances he persists and, twisting his inflexibility into something romantic, the writers make the girl accept him in the end.

How is it that men seem to let go of a well-educated, loving wife in favour of a masoom bhooli bhali puppet of a woman that his family chooses for him? (No, it doesn’t happen right away but the kitten loving, naïve girl sooner or later manages to replace the self-aware, educated girl).  What is the message that the writers try to convey? It is good to have education but, a man will only like a woman who does nothing worthwhile with this education? Even after everything, he will still fall for the one who can make gool rotiyan?

It is true that in this modern age, where women and men are considered – or at least, should be- like two wheels of the same cart, Pakistani writers are working in favor of strengthening the characters and roles on women as individuals. However, it seems they find it very hard to let go of stereotyping them at the same time. No doubt these stereotypical images are a result of deeply embedded social practices and interpretation, but I firmly believe that a conscious effort from the production houses and writers needs to be made to rectify this.

As the media is often responsible for shaping our opinions, dramas portraying women as being weak and oppressed can have an adverse influence on the way people think about and treat women in our society. In contrast, if dramas focus on strengthening women and empowering them, this can have a positive impact on society. Women could be inspired to stand up and speak up for themselves, for their own rights and protection.

Ramzan Mein Bol ! Liaqat’s best so far!(?)

Amir Liaqat, the man who can surprise you whenever he wants to, leaves no stone unturned in order to come up with better songs for his Ramzan transmission. However, where his songs seemed to have pleased the viewers, at the same time, have  disappointed them  to some extent in the past.

Lack of innovation , uniqueness and same old tunes made the listeners disinterested. However, after Aslam Ramzan , Mehman Ramzan, Pehchan Ramzan and Iman Ramzan, Ramzan Mein Bol has made its mark. From the song lyrics to the video concept and execution, everything seems better than before.

With a bigger change in his transmission style, Liaqat has once again surprised us all, specially with the Ramzan song. This time around, it is unique, it is innovative. It is Ramzan Mein Bol!

https://youtu.be/kYrYR5vhpHc

What We Miss About Ramzan:

0

The Father of Humanity:

The man who spent his whole life serving the nation. Edhi Sahab, the father of humanity left us a year ago and it’s really hard to believe that he will no longer be with us but what he has done for the nation shall remain forever. His efforts and deeds for humanity shall never be forgotten and will be guarded further on.

Qaseeda Burda shareef :

Momina Mustehsan comes up with yet another version of Qaseeda Burda Sharif and earns a fair amount of appreciation but nothing can replace the beauty of qaseeda burda shareef by Qari Khushi Muhammad. The beauty of children holding candles, the magic of the melodious voice, the soothing soft music had the charm of its own which somehow remains missing today.

Bhar Do jholi Meri Ya Elahi (the legendry voice):

The voice we miss the most, the voice with dazzling beauty, the voice of Amjad Sabri. Our sehri and aftari were spent listening to his qawalis and naat. His tragic and sudden death had us all shocked. Bhar do jholi, the most famous qawali would remind us of the melodious voice of Amjad Sabri.

 Junaid Jamshed:

The man famous for so many reasons. From “dill dill Pakistan” to “Elahi teri chaukhat pe”, the journey has been tremendously arduous, with the road filled with hurdles. Junaid Jamshed’s life has been an epitome of success and modesty. The singer-turned-scholar won the hearts of many with his magical voice and his knowledge. His tragic demise in a plane crash is something we just cannot get over and Shan-e Ramzan transmission will never be the same without him, I daresay.

The times when there were no Ramzan transmissions at all:

The times when there were no private jets flying around (be it in your dreams or for REAL), no Qmobile ki bikes and Firdous ki lawn. There were more prayers, more peace and more Ramzan-feels. With no transmission trying to gain more TRP, our fasting was way more peaceful than it is today.

The Baraat Series:

From Azher Ki Ayegi Baraat to Annie Ki Ayegi Baraat , the most awaited Baraats would leave us glued to our Televisions. Starting from the 1st of Ramzan and ending after/on Eid ul Fitar, the sitcom written by Vasay Chaudhry, would have us all anxiously waiting for it but it came to an end after the last season “Annie Ki Ayegi Baraat. This has left the fans wanting more, quite disappointed.

The Endless wait for moon-sighting announcement By Mufti Sahab:

Agree or not but we all miss the times when we would spend hours before the TV in order to hear Mufti Muneeb’s announcement regarding moon-sighting. The moments of curiosity were priceless. Although we find it highly convenient that now the announcements are made beforehand on news channels, we somehow also miss those moments of curiosity.

Ramzan will never be the same without all those we lost and WITH what we have. It remains a sad fact that those who are gone took a lot with them and those who remain have nothing to offer…

Sun Yaara Episodes 1-22 Overview – One word: Wah!

Sigh. Dair aaye par durust aye. Sums up my sentiments in a nutshell about having delayed watching this drama earlier. A Six Sigma Plus production, directed by Danish Nawaz and written by Asiya Mirza, Sun Yaara has been on air weekly on ARY Digital for a while now. Twenty two weeks (episodes) to be precise. Having seen Junaid Khan last act in Unsunni (shudder) and not being a fan of Hira Mani because, well just because, I was not tempted to watch the drama until I came across the OST and the whole OST video was such a treat to watch and listen to that curiosity got the better of me and I tuned in.

Sun Yaara is the story of a family, wait two families, three, four, haye okay let me backtrack. One at a time. We are introduced first to Lalarukh (Zernish Khan) and her family. Nida Mumtaz plays the role of a mother who has three adult children, Talal (Junaid Khan), Lalarukh aka Laali and Khurram (Asim Mahmood). She apparently also had another daughter who died and whose daughter Hina (Minaal Khan) she has raised.

Lalarukh is engaged to be married to Saif (Faris Shafi) and it is near her wedding that we are introduced to Nida’s sister (Samina Ahmed) and her family which comprises her son (Kaiser Khan Nizamani) and granddaughter Roshanay aka Roshni (Hira Mani). Roshni and her grandmother fly in from Islamabad to attend the wedding and that is when Roshni and Talal interact. Since we’re discussing families, a little on Saif’s also – he lives with his mother (Ismat Iqbal) and two sisters Saima (Laila Wasti) and Tania (Ghana Ali).

Okay so now that kaun kis ka bhai, biwi, devar, bhabhi is out of the way, the story covers various tracks and the best part about all this is that no one track bored me. There’s Laali and Saif, Roshni and Talal, Khurram and his jokes, Tania and Talal, etc. Laali marries Saif and due to a huge blowup created by Tania, Saif divorces her. Talal feels guilty and feels that to make Laali’s life full of happiness again is his responsibility. Enter Mustafa (Hasan Niazi) who is an old friend of Talal’s and who has harbored feelings for Laali for a long time. Laali’s son Ayaan takes a liking to ‘Uncle’ too and realising that Mustafa’s intentions are good, Talal gives him his blessing and bullies a very reluctant Laali into marrying Mustafa.

Talal’s own love life is a bit more colorful than his own brisk self. Although his heart is seemingly in the right place, his curt and stony faced persona does not help him much. I felt it was quite obvious that he and Roshni had developed feelings for each other, yet he agrees to marry Roshni only if the rest of the family agrees to any of the decisions he makes in the near future. When pressurizing Laali to marry Mustafa, Roshni overhears the conversation and feels used.

I know. No earth shattering, gasp worthy (is that a word?) scenarios painted here. Which brings to me why this drama is such a treat to watch despite no extraordinary storyline. Well firstly because I seem to take a liking for such dramas. Some dramas just seem to click with me and I enjoy watching them for reasons I can not really pinpoint but Sun Yaara has more going for it than just that feeling.

The direction. The opening scene of the episode when Roshni is dancing/jumping/playing (?) in the rain and the coordination of Talal and Roshni’s steps in that scene at Laali’s wedding just leave such a nice feeling with you. Dramatic yes, but this is a drama and I also loved the wedding function scenes, the music playing in the background, the decoration and lights and also little touches here and there which really lend a very realistic feel to the whole drama such as when Laali stops and bends down to meet Bee Jaan (Mustafa’s mother played by Durdana Butt) at her wedding. I know I often write reviews and normally for me it is the story and the acting that stand out but I can not help being impressed by the direction in this drama too and hats off to Danish Nawaz for doing it so well.

I also loved how each character was given enough screen time that kept my interest alive but also helped create a description of sorts of each character’s personality. You know how when you read a book and if you were to describe in a few sentences each character’s personality and traits – that is how I feel after watching Sun Yaara. And I suppose what really stayed with me was the absence of the completely black or white characters. Talal is gruff, brisk and seemingly almost cold, yet he cares deeply about the people who are close to him but words do not seem to be his best friend when he opens his mouth. Roshni is the almost meek, graceful cousin who has caught Talal’s attention. Saif is your spineless, weak man who fell in love but was not able to take a stand for the woman he thought he loved. Tania, who in her desperation wreaked havoc in Saif and Laali’s life, who I should hate more than Saif, yet I do not for although she went overboard, yet her sense of regret and wanting to make things right for Saif and Laali before it all blew up in their face made me hate her a bit less. Khurram is the carefree ‘joker’ of the clan yet can be expected to be sensible and serious when the situation demands it. Hina, the well loved niece and grandchild who has been raised with so much love and knows it well. Mustafa, sigh, the man who loved Laali all these years and now wants nothing more to make her happy. And Laali, the woman who was wronged yet thankfully has not resigned herself to a life of tears and self pity.

I wondered what it was about Talal and Roshni’s story that seemed to strike a chord. Their personalities to be exact. Typical movie stuff? Nah. I even stopped and likened it to myself and my husband haha, except I am not as meek and graceful as Roshni and my poor husband, although not very vocal emotionally is definitely not as brisk as Talal and then it hit me. All those novels I used to read and devour in a single night (before marriage, kids and cooking took over my life) came back to me. The hero who falls for the heroine gradually, catching her doing adorable things (when Roshni was picking flowers for Laali, dancing in the rain, standing near the door looking out apparently lost in thought), yet unable to express how much she means to him. Haye. LOL.

And then the acting. What can I say. I saw Zarnish in a play on ARY earlier. The name slips my mind but it was a story of two sisters, the other sister played by Sonia Hussain and I liked her acting then and even though I ditched Sehra Main Safar halfway I liked her in that drama too. She has a particular way of talking which is typical in each drama but it goes with her character here so no complaints. Junaid Khan has not impressed me much and especially after Unsunni I did not watch any of his dramas but I have to say as Talal he has done a very decent job. I keep hearing how Hira Mani is an amazing actress and after watching her in this drama, I can not disagree. Asim Mahmood is another pleasant surprise and lends humor in just about the right dose. Each actor and actress fits well into his or her own character.

And then obviously the OST. I was on the verge of writing an article recently about how various OSTs have made me tune into dramas that I was not planning to watch in the first place such as Be Inteha, Khaali Haath and now Sun Yaara. Sung by Junaid Khan himself and Damiya Farooq, it is definitely a treat to listen to. Not one to focus on words, rather on the sound of the music itself (I know, I lack zauq) I found myself listening to it more than a few times and welcomed the use of it in the drama aplenty too.

So, yes. I definitely recommend Sun Yaara for a decent watch which is not so heavy that one is wiping away tears, yet enough emotion to pull at your heartstrings (mine are quite elastic anyway). A few laughs, romance which does not border on inappropriate, cringe worthy or typical lines and scenes. Ah, except the new favorite of when the lady in question walks away and the man in her life always manages to grasp her hand just as she is walking away. I wonder how that works. If I did that, I would probably either look like I am on a one man tag team or be handed an empty coffee cup by my husband to take to the kitchen, sigh. Yes, a few, well not glitches really but annoying things such as how Tania was unconvincingly unable to get to her brother and tell him the truth before the divorce, Laali’s a bit too angry (why?) response when Mustafa proposed to her, Roshni conveniently overhearing the conversation between Laali and Talal, etc do stand out but then I guess without these situations the story could not move forward so I suppose, let it be.

So despite Roshni’s anger and sudden tantrums, it appears that she will have to go ahead with her rukhsati and it seems like Saif is on a mission to turn Laali’s life upside down once again. I am assuming a predictable end but still enjoying waiting for it to unfold. How many of you have been watching Sun Yaara and what do you think of it? Would love to hear your thoughts. And for anyone reading this, Ramadan Mubarak :)

Kunwal Javid

P.S. Not looking for a religious viewpoint on this, but asking out of sheer curiosity. I haven’t been to Pakistan in a decade now and attended limited nikkahs here (which were mostly segregated) – so a bit curious about the nikkah scene between Talal and Roshni. The way they sat facing each other with a thin transparent screen in between. I saw the same thing in Be Inteha. I thought it was a very interesting concept and actually quite beautiful but humor me please – is this a drama/filmy thing or has anyone seen this at an actual wedding too? Thanks :)

Like father, like daughter

His refreshing humor and charming personality paired with his superb sense of style, the host of Jeeto Pakistan has made the Pakistani audience fall in love with him. But there is more to him than just style and looks; Fahad has a beautiful relationship with his lovely daughter.

Once again, the father-daughter bond was brought to our TV screens in Jeeto Pakistan, Fahad’s very own show. One can easily argue that it was the cutest thing on television today.

Fahad’s daughter was present in the segment where he asks his audience members to choose a box from a number of boxes to receive what’s inside as their gift. He likes to prolong the segment as well as make it interesting by saying “Sooch lo” to dabbas that usually don’t contain anything worthwhile.

Nothing of this sort happened today as the cute girl didn’t give her daddy a chance to even say that. As soon a box was called out by the dad, the kid opened it without any preamble. This had the audience members amused and Fahad playfully frustrated.

The little angle kept roaming around the set; living in her own happy world, playing with what the set of Jeeto Pakistan offered her. Fahad ‘scolded’ his daughter in such a manner that every member of the audience couldn’t help but smile at the words that made out of his mouth. Fatima paid no heed to whatever he was saying, and kept doing as she pleased!

The smile on the host’s face as he watched his daughter standing next to him, helping him entertain the audience, was one of utter adoration and love.  Look at the picture he shared on his twitter from today’s show :

Like father, like daughter

A father’s influence in his daughter’s life shapes her self-esteem, self-image, confidence and opinions of men. Fahad seems to be doing a pretty good job at it. Have a look at the times he brought Fatima on set in the past:

Titlee Episode 20 Review – No Lessons Learned Yet!

I appreciate the fact that Samina Ejaz is an expert at penning down scripts which may not be grand but they are almost always enticing because her dramas are usually logical and they have plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewers looking forward to more. However, after so many weeks of waiting to see Naila pay for her mistakes, it is extremely disappointing how all these shocking and tragic developments are not leading to a change in Naila’s personality or a conclusive step forward which would give the viewers hope that she will suffer the consequences of her actions. Amna and Marium’s disappearance, like many other recent developments, did not serve the purpose which most of the viewers were hoping it will serve. This was such a tragic and upsetting turn in the story but it did not have as big an impact as it could have had. Amna could have easily shared the reason for the change in her behavior even if the two sisters did not run away and ultimately were kidnapped. This development was mainly used to add to the shock value of these two episodes which is somewhat sad because right now is not the time when such extreme steps or desperate measures should be taken by the writer in order to allure the viewers.

Titlee Episode 20 Review - No Lessons Learned Yet!

Amna and Marium’s decision to run away and the repercussions got plenty of screen time  but as a whole it turned out to be a pointless development. Naila’s attitude did not change at all and Ahmed’s response to what Amna told him wasn’t exactly satisfying! Even when he heard his wife talking on the phone and making those plans, he was enraged but he did not check her phone, which was really strange because that is something someone in that situation would do instinctively! I was expecting him to redial the last number on Naila’s phone but when he didn’t do that, it was quite apparent that the writer was doing whatever she could to stretch this track. Leaving the house and giving Naila an opportunity to do whatever she wanted to was strange. He could have asked Amir to pick the kids.

In my opinion now is not the time for showing twists and turns which have shock value but don’t contribute much to the story. I hope that we can watch two more decent episodes of this drama and a gratifying ending.  I have to say that Hania Aamir and Ali Abbas have made the most of their roles and they are the main reason why this drama has been so enticing. I enjoyed watching Titlee overall but right now I am losing my patience with it because waiting all week to see how a certain development will impact the main track in the story and ending up watching another episode which isn’t a big step forward towards the conclusion of the play, is turning out to be a major test of patience.

Rehan promised Naila that he will support her if Ahmed decides to leave her, which was somewhat unexpected as well because I was expecting Rehan to back out of this relationship once Ahmed found out. Right now, it is impossible to predict how this drama will end but I hope we get to see an ending which is worth the wait!!

How many of you watched this episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Dear Maya – The Indian Critics Acclaim

Dear Maya - The Indian Critics Acclaim

Following Mawra Hocane, Mahira Khan and Saba Qamar, it is now time for Madiha Imam to shine her stardom in the colossal world of Bollywood. Her movie Dear Maya, was already celebrated before its release since it featured the much awaited come-back of Manisha Koirala after a long hiatus.

The movie was generally commended as a pleaser by the viewers who claimed that the script had a soft look to it, unlike the many usual movies that are produced and screened in the cinema during the present times. Although several critics preeminently noted that it was refreshing to see Manisha again after some time, they approved of Madiha’s acting just as much, (who had a much longer on-screen time as compared to the latter), reviewing her performance to be well done in accordance with the role she was assigned. She was commended to have a ‘natural onscreen performance’ and a ‘charming aura’ that made up for the well-written, yet padded and elongated story-line; apparently the plot is much too simple to have been stretched in the time of 2 hours and 11 minutes.

Nevertheless, it has been declared as a must-watch especially for audiences who prefer the genre of drama and emotion twisted in intrigue and suspense.

There are yet to be reviews taken in in order to determine how well it has performed within the Pakistani audience.

All in all, it is evident that yet another Pakistani actress has been accepted within the circle of these acclaimed cinematic critics and made her signature in Bollywood.

Dubbing of Punjab Nahi Jaungi

Punjab Nahi Jaungi is one of the most anticipated and awaited films to be released this year. It is going through a post-production phase these days.

The dubbing sessions for PNJ, potentially the biggest film of this year, is almost under wraps. The director, Nadeem Baig has confirmed that most of the leading characters including Ahmad Ali Butt, Mehwish Hayat, Sohail Ahmad, and Urwa Hocane are through with their dubbing sessions. Currently, Humayun Saeed’s dubbing session is in progress and will be finished soon.

Dubbing of Punjab Nahi Jaungi

A roundup of the top celebrities of our media industry is what has created such a hype for this movie. While most of the post production is taking place in Pakistan, imported technology is being sought for the colour grading and sound mixing of the movie. The trailer of this film is to be released on Eid-ul-Fitr and all the efforts that are being put into the project definitely makes us believe that the trailer alone is going to be a real treat. The director promises that it will be enough to raise the much-needed curiosity for the movie.

One of the best elements that keeps audience engaged in a story is a love triangle and this movie will not only be entertaining one, but will also have other engaging elements such as top-notch actors, best production, and well situated and significant songs to keep the audience engaged throughout.

Will the makers of Jawani Phir nahi aani be able to meet high audience expectations of this movie? We certainly hope so!

Goher Mumtaz and Hareem Farooq on board with Baaghi

The media has been in a buzz ever since the news about the making of Qandeel Baloch’s biopic has been confirmed by Saba Qamar, who will be playing the leading role of the controversial social media panjandrum. Baaghi’s producers peviously confirmed the following actors for their cast, which included Sarmad Khoosat, Ali Kazmi and Osman Khalid Butt. However, in a latest picture that went viral yesterday on Instagram, it seems that both Goher Mumtaz and Hareem Farooq have joined in the journey of this on-screen biography as well.

The alluring actress has recently been seen on-screen with her latest movie Dobara Phir Se whereas, the charming singer-turned-actor has kept an unusually low profile recently in both singing and acting. So far, none of the actors themselves have given a proper statement to the press about their roles and characters that are involved in the story. However, it seems that Nina Kashif is determined that the drama serial will be able to convey a strong message as well as become a popular hit; and by the looks of the cast, it cannot be labeled as anything less.

The plot of this biopic will be aimed to highlight the devastating stigma of honor killing of women prevalent in the Pakistani society.

Of of the three bands Zaki formed, ‘Axe Attack’ had the first ever English album recorded in Pakistan and though it was never released in Pakistan due to refusal of Pakistani music companies, the album was well liked in Australia and gained Zaki quite a following. Saba Rizwan (The girl who was insulted) replies to Sahir Lodhi

Sahir Lodhi has received quite a backlash against his behaviour in debating competition and has apologised quite a few times. I believe in accepting apologies but in this case, just couldn’t get out of my head, the state of mind of that young lady who was cut off in the middle of her debate by an anchor who was so indignant as if Quaid e Azam is his private property, and of those parents whose daughter she must have been.

In a recent video upload, that girl Saba Rizwan has replied to Sahir in no uncertain terms that his apology doesn’t diminish the effects of what he has done. She said he has asked for forgiveness over his crude behaviour but never once for insulting a female on National Television, being watched live all over the world.

She went on to say that Sahir has emphasised that his angry words were depicted out of context and nobody showed his whole statement. So what about her? Did Sahir let her complete her words. No, he picked up one word and started literally shouting at her. She wasn’t allowed to complete either and after listening to him, I wonder how she even managed to finish her debate.

Then she read the whole poetry and announced boycotting that competition. She called debating her passion and that she will not quit it, rather will find a more respectable platform to exercise her talent.

Kuddos to that girl for speaking so calmly, so eloquently and pointing out his flawed apology. In a country, where majority of females suffer low esteem due to such type of men, a warning notice was certainly not enough. Pemra should ban Sahir Lodhi on the basis of gross misconduct and abusive behaviour towards females. No man , inside the house or outside should be allowed to insult or degrade a woman and then apologise after his verbal diarrhoea has subsided. And anyone who does that, should be made an example by punishment so others would get the idea straight that mumbling an apology afterwards does not cut it. Not at all.

All the best to Saba Rizwan in all her future endeavours.

Maan jao na set to release on eid ul fitar

Maan jao na set to release on eid ul fitar The movie with its Iranian leading lady Naaz has caused quite a stir in February when the leading cast had a meet up and gave some insight into the movie. It’s shot mainly in the metropolitan Karachi and some parts are from Sukkhar.

Along with debutante hero Adeel Chaudhry and heroine Naaz, other main characters of the film are played by veteran actors including Asif Raza Mir, Asma Abbas and Nayyar Ejaz and youngsters Hajra Yameen, Ghana Ali and Ayaz Samoo.

The movie mainly revolves about the changing philosophy of female lead who has no romantic inclinations before being besotted by the hero. Their ups and downs as they realise their own feelings and the reactions of their families are the centre plot. Maan jao na set to release on eid ul fitar

So here we have given you an idea to spend one of the days of eid ul fitar with your friends and family in a cinema watching Maan Jao Naa ?

Mahira Khan is now #HameshaReady with Veet!

Mahira Khan is now #HameshaReady with Veet!

From her tremendous success in Pakistan after a handful of record-rating drama serials, Mahira Khan did not fail to disappoint her fans as she stepped into the Bollywood industry and was co-starred in her very first movie, with none other than the king himself – Shah Rukh Khan. It seems like the actress can do no wrong, for she has also been signed as the face of Lux, been awarded ‘Face to Watch Out For‘ at the Vogue Beauty Awards in India,  Best Film Actress at the Masala Awards AND Lux Style Awards 2017; not to mention, Best Emerging Talent at the Feminia Awards held annually in Dubai as well.

Now perhaps to add the cherry on top at the columns of her achievements, the diva has been asked to represent Veet, as its new face; hence being the first Pakistani woman ever to be called upon as its brand ambassador.

Mahira Khan is now #HameshaReady with Veet!
Mahira Khan – promotions for Veet

Its new slogan now reads  #HameshaReady, and the actress has been doing several small teasers as well promotional events to endorse the product.

It was heard that the actress was also asked to be a part of the panel of judges for the show, Miss Veet Pakistan but she merely declined the offer laughingly, saying she wouldn’t do justice to it. She was however, notably interested in being a mentor for the online Veet Academy for Girls.

Whatever the future might hold for this ravishing actress, it will undoubtedly be one more for the books!

Nazr e Bad Episode 37 Review – Waste of Time!

Ohkay so, this episode of Nazr e Bad was all over the place. Not sure why are they digging the old graves & showing the flashbacks of those scenarios which have nothing to do with the story & its development. The fact that they didn’t air the 2nd episode this week & turned that episode into a recap shows that are not left with much content & are just aiming for a higher number of episodes. This drama should’ve ended weeks ago but it is such a shame that the team is still bent on stretching the story to the limit only to cross the 40th episode mark. What a shame I say!

So, Parvez is suffering but is he really suffering? I don’t think so. All that has happened in his life is that he hasn’t returned to his home & has been captured by that businessman? Seriously, is this punishment enough for him? I don’t think so. Parvez after trying his hands on being a good guy got bored of it & now wanted Baba to help him get his powers back. Also, I am not sure if anyone else has noticed but I just can’t stand the way Azfar says BaVa in stead of Baba. This episode had a lot of Parvez’s breakdowns which I found worth forwarding. It is good that Maham has drawn a line & she is not forgiving him. Not sure what Abeera was doing with that businessman, like I think it would’ve made sense if they had shown some time lapse, may be a span of a month or two, for things to come together & make sense because as far as we know, Abeera got rejected by Ahmer just yesterday & the next day she was with that businessman who said she is more than just a friend? Also, not sure why that businessman is involving Parvez in his personal affairs, like he wants Parvez to rescue his building for him so then why is he introducing him to his girlfriend(s)?

Ahmer won the lottery & it guaranteed some security to Maham to get her son treated. Aftab came to meet Maham, I can see they are going to send Maham back to Aftab because there’s no other reason why he is hovering around her & her house without a purpose. Babar also sent some gifts & cash to his mother, suggesting that things are shaping up for Nusrat which is good!

Almas got injured because of the ceiling that fell on her, I thought she won’t be able to survive but Almas being Almas, she miraculously did & only got a bruise on her forehead & chin, whereas her skull was may be made of steel that nothing happened to it. So, Humera’s secret got exposed & her husband sent her home for good, good to see that but again, the way they showed Humera going back to her ex-husband was sickening & so not needed!

I just don’t get what was the need of showing Shazia’s flashback with her sister? Like now that she was out of touch with Parvez, the director still wanted to keep her in the picture so he showed her crying out of guilt of being the reason behind her sister’s death, but then again, that scene & in fact Shazia’s character doesn’t contribute to the story in any way so not sure why she is getting so much of coverage! Same goes with Do Muh Wala Baba, his Kathak Dance in front of a million eggs was senseless, like I remember in the beginning all these sort of scenes had so much of an impact that I felt I couldn’t watch this drama alone but now when such scenes are unfolding I am looking at them as if I am watching a kid’s movie.

Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Nazr e Bad.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Fahad Mustafa invites Amir Liaqat to Jeeto Pakistan

Recently, we have seen a very interesting banter between Amir Liaqat and Fahad Mustafa, which thankfully is more playful than insulting. Among the trend of dramatics and blowing things out of proportion, they are both keeping it low key and acknowledge on screen that the competition is mainly professional and nothing personal. It was started by Fahad Mustafa saying that Amir Liaqat will have to accept him because he has a lot of love for him. Consequently, Amir Liaqat played that clip in his show and responded that he loves Fahad too.

Yesterday, Fahad Mustafa took it to the next level and asked a guest if he recognises him and then Waseem Badami and then Jahaz Walay Baba. Later he said that he loves Amir Liaqat and wants to invite him over to distribute planes ✈️ on their show together while Waseem Badami looked on in mock anger.

Seems like we are in for a lot of interesting jaunts between these two this Ramzan.

Danish Taimoor and the cast of “Wujood” in Turkey!

Danish Taimoor’s fans are definitely very excited for his upcoming film, “Wujood”.

The film is directed and produced by Javed Sheikh and is a thriller film, something our Pakistani film industry will welcome with open arms. The lead cast consists of Danish Taimoor, Saeeda Imtiaz, Aditi Singh (Indian actress), Shahid Ali Saleem, Nadeem Baig and the experienced Javed Sheikh himself.

The shooting of the film is to take place in three countries ; Pakistan, Thailand and Turkey. From the photos that the talented Danish Taimoor has shared on his social media account, it seems like the Turkey part is being covered these days.

Azfar Rehman & Sohai Ali Abrao, next Fawad & Mahira?

The handsome Azfar Rehman is to star next to the beautiful Sohai Ali Abrao  in the upcoming drama serial  “Aadhi Gawahi”.

Azfar Rehman & Sohai Ali Abrao, next Fawad & Mahira?

The duo already stars opposite to each other in the drama serial “Kaisi Yeh Paheli” but it hasn’t gained as much success as one would hope for.

However, this is a mega project penned down by Saima Akram, Aadhi Gawah. Being a Momina Duraid production, one can expect great things from the project.

Ayesha Sana is said to play the role of Azfar’s character’s mother. Senior actors including Saleem sheikh will be a part of this project, which furthermore emphasizes the potential for it being another hit Hum TV serial.

So the burning question is, can Azfar Rehman and Sohail Ali Abrao be the next ‘Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’?

Mahira and Fahad working together?

Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa just had a chat on twitter and made the audience wonder if the two will be working together. Take a look!

Fahad Mustafa gives away 50 tola gold in Jeeto Pakistan

On day 5 of the famous Ramzan Transmission Jeeto Pakistan, a man named Asim was lucky enough to walk away with 50 Tola of gold. The game show winnings are mostly by sheer luck as the audience are picked out by Fahad Mustafa and they make guesses about the box that would contain present for them.

Bad News for Everyone Waiting for Maula Jatt

Bilal Lashari, the director of Waar, revealed during a 2013 interview that he will be directing the sequel to Maula Jatt, a Punjabi action and musical film released in 1979. By 2016, the cast of the film was announced and big names such as Fawad Khan, Sanam Jung, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Mahira Khan were on the list. The movie has been highly anticipated since it was announced almost 4 years ago but for anyone who was hoping to see good friends Mahira Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi on screen, we have some bad news.

On a recent episode of Tonight With HSY, Mahira revealed that she and Hamza don’t have a single scene together! The actress said ‘He (Hamza) was the most excited about me joining Maula Jutt and it’s funny how we don’t have a single scene together‘. Quite a disappointment considering how much chemistry the two could have had on screen. Just look at these photos!

While we’re certainly saddened by this, the movie does seem to have quite a lot of potential with its stellar cast and directorial team. Let’s hope for the best!

Wasim & Shoaib encourage girl power on Geo Khelo Pakistan

The topic “Women Empowerment” and “girl power” is a burning issue all over the world. “Women empowerment” and “women equality with men” is a universal issue. Pakistan, unfortunately, is a lot behind when it comes to this. We still live in a (mostly) patriarchal society where there are certain things that a woman just cannot do without raising questioning and sometimes even accusing eyes in her direction.

Take one simple thing such as, riding a bike. Sure, you see every now and then a bold girl, defying the norms of society, riding a bike and not letting her gender stop her from being able to do so but you also have to admit that nearly everyone in her vicinity will stop to talk about it either out loud or in hushed whispers; if not then then will at least look at her wide eyed, like she is from another planet. Some might even look at her admirably, but still do a double take. Why? Because this is, unfortunately, not a normal occurrence in our society.

And thus, it was refreshing and heartwarming to watch when Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar encouraged this notion on their Ramazan transmission, Geo Khelo Pakistan. This happened during a segment of the show when a girl was invited by Shoaib Akhtar to spin the wheel and win a prize. The girl when asked what she’d like to have, requested for a bike. Upon inquiring who she wants to get the bike for, the girl informed that she’d want one for herself and she’d love riding it. Promoting gender equality, she further said that if guys can ride a bike, so can girls. The audience present in the hall appreciated this statement and showed their appreciation with a huge round of applause for her.

Wasim Akram, being the supportive guy that he is, only encouraged her further by gifting her a helmet along with the bike and saying that she should ride the bike all she wants.

Watching the entire segment was just delightful. The positivity that both the hosts spread  makes one think that there can be a bright future for Pakistani women in all spheres of life. Pakistani women have a long way to go to be able to have equal opportunities as men, but what is it that they say, little drops of water make the mighty ocean!

Tell us what are your thoughts on this? Do you believe girls should be able to ride bikes just like guys or is this ride just for guys?

Surf Excel – #NekiEkIbaadat

The Holy month of Ramadan never fails to disappoint viewers with new campaigns and promotions of products that are merely centered around its spiritual teachings.

Surf Excel - #NekiEkIbaadat

Similarly this year, the new Ramadan commercial televised by Surf Excel has embraced audiences in sentiments by endorsing the label of ‘Daagh Tou Achay Hotay Hain’ through the spirit of putting others first. The main role is played by a small child named Shahid, and has outperformed his character in a most adorable manner, by abandoning his own Sehri to to spend it with an elderly neighbor, who lived alone. The TVC has become a rather favorite of the audience for the idea has been entwined rather ingeniously with the purpose of the product itself.

Many other brands such as Jaam-e- Shireen, Pepsi and Coca Cola have also set forth to encourage people to act generously in this blessed month and we hope that they have consequently been a source of inspiration for everyone.
