Nauman Ijaz and Hareem Farooq became the most vicious duo of Pakistani dramas this year. TT and Masooma received a lot of hate but the actors received appreciation for such a great portrayal. This is another age gap romance with the right casting. Bismil was about two people with a generation gap who get married in a dubious manner. Thus Hareem and Nauman’s age gap looked good because it was according to the demand of the story.
Khushhal Khan & Ramsha Khan
Khushhal Khan and Ramsha Khan have a small age gap in real life and the two starred opposite each other in Duniyapur. The stars actually worked on their looks in the drama and they are looking incredible. This is a good choice by the makers when we have a leading lady who is a few years older than the leading man. This Jafaa pairing had to have an age gap according to the story but Usman did not look good with Sehar. The pairing looked off as Usman did not put in much effort in his looks in the show. Sehar looked way too young opposite him and this is not how age gap romances should be done.
Danial Afzal Khan & Aina Asif
This casting in Woh Ziddi Di is nothing short of criminal. Aina Asif is a good actress but she is still a minor and she is already playing such mature roles without any reason. An older girl would have been so much better in the role. Aina is way too young and she did not look good with Danial Afzal Khan. Pakistani dramas need to do better in casting when they work with child actors.
Ahad Raza Mir & Dananeer Mobeen
Ahad Raza Mir and Dananeer Mobeen are working together in Meem Se Mohabbat. The story does demand an age gap between the leads and thus the casting is okay. However, till now we have very much of a cousin/sibling vibe from the lead pair and it may get better in the upcoming episodes.
Pakistani dramas need to do better for the most part while casting leads in age gap romances and should not cast actors with huge age gaps when the script does not demand it and the difference is starkly visible!

After Producing 5 successful seasons Rohail failed to enthral audience in Season6. The Idea to encompass international musicians didn’t functioned at all. After Season 6 the production was handover to Strings. Strings received heavy criticism from audience when they produced season 7, surely the essence of coke studio lost all of a sudden and it was evident that experimenting is not Strings’ thing. It is true that most of the performances in Season 7 are simple flat renditions and not up to Coke Studio’s Standard. If we try to recall Season 7 only two songs knock our memory “Chaap Tilak” and “Tum Naraaz ho”
Strings took criticism in a constructive way and that’s why Season 8 was a mighty hit. The notion to include big names like Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Ali Azmat and QB clasped audience attention. Almost all performances from season 8 received heavy acclaims. Special mentions of season 8 are “Tajdar-e-haram” by atif “Sammi meri waar” by QB and Umair “Man amad-e-am” by Gul Panra and Atif “Bewajah” by Nabeel and “Hina Ki Khushboo” by Asim and Samra.
Season 8 confidently restored faith in Coke Studio and expectations were high this year. However Strings got another plan which results in utter failure. They decided to bring 6 Music directors so that spectators can witness more diversity in music. Strings assumed that this initiative will spellbind viewers but it came out as unqualified disappointment. Hence the result of Season 9 was “too many cooks spoil the broth”.
So what are the main reasons of Season 9 failure in comparison with Season 8?
1. First of all there was hardly any fusion in each rendition except “Paar Chanah”. Most of the Songs were simple flat executions and below par. It seemed like music directors were trying to make use of every musical instrument.
2. We have indeed listened to different flavours of music but there was hardly any creativity. If you listen closely to songs while your eyes are shut, you will automatically grade most of the performances as average. Few Songs like “Aja Morey Saiyaan” “Dil Ruba” “Paar Chanah” “Baliye (Laung Gawacha)” “Shamaan Pai Gaiyan/Kee Dum da bharosa” proved to be coke studio material . The version of “Rang” performed by Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad in Season 5 was far better than Rahat’s and Amjad’s one, bluntly saying Coke Studio this time cashed Amjad Sabri’s death and released his rendition in the end so that viewers can follow each and every episode right till the end.
3. The cast lacked Quality I was hoping for star studded performances like previous season, on the contrary I have witnessed most of the singers for the very first time in my life for example Natasha Khan, Nirmal Roy, Jabar Abbas, Basit Ali, Damia Faaroqi etc. I wish they have invested in big names instead of music directors duh!
4. Strings are well aware of dedicated “Tharak” our nation comprehends, they experienced it last year with Gul Panra. Hence this time they use Mominah like a Cash Cow giving her three songs in one season. The overuse of Mominah was simply annoying. Rachel deserved more songs because she is continuously serving this platform for last six seasons as backing vocalist or in either case Aima Baig would be a better choice.
5. Coke Studio was popular for picking old Pakistani tracks and fusing it with different genre of music. The experiment to construct music around 60% new songs and 40% old tracks also failed big time.
So who remained the Most Successful Music Director?
In terms of Music Direction in my opnion only Noori, and Jaffer Zaidi did a good job. Shiraz Uppal, Shani Arshad, Faakhir and Shuja Haider might be a good music composer but creating fusion is not their thing.
Noori definitely cleaned sweep this season, they presented every flavour of Music with Fusion. Whether talk about “Aja Morey Saiyyan” “Baliye (Laung Gawacha)” “Paar Chanah” “O Re” every performance is mesmerising. Specially “Paar Chanah” restored my faith in Coke Studio and reminded me of Rohail’s Era.
Next is Jaffer for “Janay na tu” “Uddi Ja”and “Lagi Bina/ Challa Mele Noon Challiye”. I wish Faakhir had performed in earlier seasons but it’s good he was finally called by Coke Studio, however he is not a good music director at all. Only “Dil Ruba” and “Afreen Afreen” are good.
Shani Arshad, Shiraz and Shuja failed to mesmerize me with their music compositions. Their compositions might work in Drama or Film OSTs but surely not for Coke Studio.

These episodes of Anaa covered more of the family politics and the new turns in all the romantic/not-so-romantic tracks. After making some of the most important decisions of their lives in haste and anger, Daneen and Areesh both were shown suffering in different ways. While Daneen tried to make her marriage work, Areesh being the coward that he is, could not own the decision he took. Areesh has been shown as a really weak man while Daneen definitely has more guts than him. Ezza continued to sideline her actual feelings for Altamash and there were times when it was difficult to understand how serious Altamash was regarding this relationship. Some of the dialogues and situations are already getting repetitive. Even though Daneen is flawed and most of the times she is clueless as well but she is the reason I tune into this drama every week. She is more honest than most of the characters in this play and whatever she has done so far has harmed no one but herself. Hania Aamir’s performance has been superb throughout. Naimal Khawar and Usman Mukhtar’s on-screen chemistry makes you root for them but their relationship annoys me at times. I would definitely like to see them together on screen again.
The Love Triangles
These episodes covered Daneen’s attempts to settle down in her marriage but Saif had some serious reservations about the kind of relationship Daneen wanted. Saif has accepted Daneen as his wife but he isn’t the kind of man who will give Daneen the sort of companionship she wants. That is something Saif made quite clear before they got married but even then Daneen is getting sick of the constant comparisons and wants more from this relationship. Even though Daneen is immature, at times clever but she is no match for the more mature people around her who have their way more often than her. Although her phupo kept on giving her advices which were anything but positive, Daneen did not go running back into Areesh’s arms. While Areesh is being unfaithful and he is more than willing to divorce Aania, Daneen tried to help Aania whichever way she could. Also, her apology when Areesh picked up the phone and told her how he felt showed that she did not want to hurt Aania.
Altamash’s girlfriend and Ezza’s cousin are the two new characters which were introduced in these episodes. While Altamash’s girlfriend was insecure after finding out that he liked Ezza, Kabeer does not harbor any such feelings for Ezza, which is definitely a relief. The Altamash/Ezza track has a very non-desi feel to it. Some of the dialogues and scenarios however are not always pleasing. Ezza drinking Pulmonol and getting intoxicated was one such scene which reminded me of drama serial Ashk! The ‘talab ki machli’ dialogue was especially weird mainly because of the way it was written. The fact that Altamash is a ‘good catch’ was repeated many times. Nazia wants to see Altamash and Ezza together and it looks like she will eventually make it happen. Ezza’s denial of her feelings for Altamash is actually getting irritating now but I guess it is her anaa which isn’t allowing her to accept her feelings. The way Altamash gave his girlfriend a warning was in bad taste, unless there is an actual reason for showing his aggressive side.
Nazia’s Materialistic Approach
In these episodes the viewers saw how Nazia has changed. She doesn’t only want revenge but her entire approach towards everything is quite materialistic and shallow. Her husband naturally does not like the changes in her and her personality overall is annoying. She feels entitled to this better life and living it the way she wants after being away for all these years. She is a perfect example of how negative and bitter some people get after they have such unpleasant experiences. I think the reason why there has been so much focus on her attitude is that sooner or later she will be the reason why Altamash and Ezza get married.
Overall Impression
I know most people are watching this drama for Ezza and Altamash but for me Daneen is the main attraction. After watching these few episodes I am having a tough time liking Altamesh’s character since there are times when he comes across as a really twisted human being. Daneen’s character, the portrayal and her relationship with everyone around her are the reasons why I continue to watch and enjoy this drama. I am losing my patience with Ezza and Altamash they are clearly attracted to one another but they are constantly telling each other off as well. Daneen is more honest and now her ego has definitely taken a backseat in her life. Her character is easier to understand and relate to. You can’t help but feel for Aania but she is also to be blamed for being such a doormat. The performances have been on point, the family politics is the least interesting part of this drama but some of the other tracks are interesting enough.

Tonight’s episode was relatively slow paced considering this was the 22nd episode and something major happened last week. This episode covered almost all the tracks and some of the tracks are going around in circles. This drama continues to be not-so-desi and at the same time there are some characters which play the zalim samaj with great dedication.

Anya’s role tonight was surprising as well as really difficult to connect to since her actual feelings were not shown. The fact that she was willing to do anything at all to please Areesh wasn’t surprising or unbelievable but surely this was not easy for her. There wasn’t a single scene in this episode which covered her true emotions at this moment. It was however good to see her being relieved when she left her in law’s house. Daneen and Areesh are planning to run away but no one talked about how Daneen was going to get a divorce from Saif. Daneen feels for Anya and she is ‘thankful’ but she does not want to let go of Areesh. Daneen is back to being her careless self mainly because of the fact that no one really looked out for her when she needed support. Daneen however is making yet another mistake and Saif even after all this is not willing to give her a divorce.
After giving up on Ezza, Altamash decided to call his ex and ended up meeting Ezza unexpectedly yet again. Kabir bhai’s outburst was completely unexpected and I don’t understand why the men in this drama manhandle the women whenever they are upset. One thing is for sure that Ezza’s ‘no’ always means a yes since after refusing to go out for coffee with Kabir, she was at the coffee shop with him in the next scene. The scene at the coffee shop was really cute until Kabir lost it! Naimal Khawar is especially cute in scenes covering her discomfort while she is around Altamash. Altamash once again mistook Kabir as Ezza’s ‘love interest’ which was slightly disappointing considering he is a smart guy who really should know better. Hopefully after finding out what Nazia has done, he will figure out why Ezza was too embarrassed to talk to him even. Altamash’s reaction after he found out everything that had happened was quite ‘thanda’ considering he is so over protective about Anya. Also, Ghazanfar didn’t try hard enough to find Areesh since he had an inkling that Anya was in touch with him.
Final Remarks
Tonight’s episode covered some of the reactions, the viewers have yet to see how Daneen’s father will react to the latest developments. The preview of the next episode suggested that something tragic is about to happen. It would have been nice if we got to see more of Daneen’s father since he was not shown thinking about Daneen even once after that visit. Waiting to find out how these complicated situations are eventually resolved. Anaa has definitely been an interesting watch but some of the situations are getting highly repetitive. It is certainly time to wrap things up since the drama so far has been well paced. Daneen, even with all her flaws, continues to be the most appealing aspect of this drama. I am still hoping that she will eventually be the one who will convince Areesh to go back to Anya.

This latest episode of Anaa had some shocking revelations, few scenarios which were not very convincing and others which made me wonder how this story will end. I have said this before, Anaa is not the kind of drama you overanalyze therefore I am not going to do that but Altamash’s complete ignorance (considering the media was somehow covering this story – but why?!!) was not the least bit convincing. Other than that, this episode was fast paced and it showed that some of the characters deep down are still the same people they were in the beginning. Some of these characters are paying for the wrong decisions they took and others are merely playing in the hands of those who want to take revenge.
What I really like about this story is that everyone is fully responsible in some way or the other for the decisions they have taken and no one can really say that these relationships were forced on them. Most often in our dramas there is more focus on society and family but in this play there is more focus on each individual, which in my opinion is a mature approach.
Areesh Continues Playing The Victim
Areesh has gone from falling in love with Anya to feeling cheated and betrayed. It is almost as if he feels like he has a ticket now to do whatever he wishes just because Anya hid something about her past. Areesh’s extreme actions and his short term planning is completely in line with his character. He has proven yet again that he cannot be trusted but Daneen is madly in love and cannot see that. Few weeks back, Daneen was trying to bring Areesh and Anya together but now that she has seen what Saif is capable of and after being abandoned by her family, Areesh it seems is the only escape. She wants to start over without thinking of the repercussions. In the previous few episodes it seemed like Daneen knew better now but once she found out that she will never be able to win Saif over, she was back to being her rebellious old self.
Nazia played a major role in getting the message across and Areesh like always, changed his mind a little too easily. Areesh easily passes as one of the most irresponsible male leads we have seen in dramas this year. Although there isn’t anything remotely likable about Areesh but his character has been etched-out nicely and Shehzad Sheikh’s performance couldn’t have been better.
The Repercussions of Wrong Decisions
Daneen and Anya are two characters which are paying for their wrong decisions therefore although you feel for them but they don’t entirely come across as victims. Daneen got married to Saif because she wanted to make Areesh jealous therefore she has no one else to blame but herself. Same is true for Anya, she chose to marry a man who she knew did not love her and didn’t tell him the ‘secret’ even though she knew that she should have. That does not justify what is happening to these characters or how their husbands are treating them but by writing their tracks in such a way, the writer successfully avoided a few clichés. Hania Aamir’s portrayal has been brilliant throughout, I absolutely love how she owns the reckless element of Daneen’s personality in particular. Areeba Shahood has done justice to her character but the fact that Anya is a complete doormat makes her character less appealing.
Nazia’s Plan
After finding out that the Shergarh family didn’t have the financial edge any more and Izza needed to get married to someone rich and influential in order to get that edge, Nazia changed her plan altogether. She went back to her husband so that she could somehow convince Izza to get married to Altamash. It was good to see that her husband guessed that she had an ulterior motive. Tara Mehmood has played her role superbly, she makes you hate her character more with every passing episode. Farhan Ali Agha is extremely likable as the docile and loving husband. Izza ignored her mother because she is obviously really mad at her.
Altamash and Izza
Altamash is finally showing interest in Izza like never before but now the situation is such that Izza is too embarrassed and ashamed to talk to him even. Altamash’s complete ignorance in this episode made absolutely no sense considering he is back in Pakistan. Surely a man like him is really well connected and in touch with media personnel. Naimal Khawar and Usman Mukhtar’s performances however continue to be solid. Kabir bhai keeps you guessing since he can be quite unreasonable at times. Shamil Khan has performed really well too in a negative role.
Final Remarks
The story has picked up pace and it seems that things will only get worse before they get better. It is impossible to predict what turn different tracks will take. Hopefully Daneen will meet Anya at some point and she will make a good decision for Areesh since he can never take one on his own. Waiting to find out what turn the story takes now.
HUM is going overboard trying to promote Superstar. Showing an entire song from the film more than 10 times in a day and showing tickers throughout the day is awfully annoying.

These two episodes were fast paced and the true colors of most of the characters were revealed in these episodes. Episode 19 gave hope that Izza and Altamash might finally accept and acknowledge their feelings for each other but the developments in the next episode made it impossible for Izza to even stay in touch with Altamash. Nazia executed her plan to take revenge from the Shamshernagar family and that changed everything for everyone involved. Nazia’s negativity is growing with every passing episode and it seems like there is no end to the hatred between these families. Daneen got very little screen time in the latest episode but her frame of mind and stance was made quite clear in episode 19.
Flawed Yet Interesting Characters
The characters and the story continues to be interesting although at times it is more twisted than anything else. Even though Daneen is acting like a fool but you can’t help but feel for her since a lot of what is happening is Areesh’s fault as well. Areesh’s character is a lot like that of Jamil from Aangan – he is always confused about what he wants from life and he lacks integrity. Some of the dialogues also remind me of the character Shehzad Sheikh played in Khud Parast. Although Areesh’s character isn’t the least bit likable but Shehzad Sheikh has done complete justice to it by translating all of his weaknesses superbly on screen. Areesh needs to grow up big time and he is too impulsive, emotional and at times selfish. Having a father like Ghazanfar and a daadi who is so headstrong could be the reason why Areesh never learned to make decisions on his own and stick to them.
Nazia’s character is like that of Bari Apa (played by Savera Nadeem) and I have a feeling that her end too will be a lot like that character. Daneen’s father is completely missing in action which doesn’t add up since he was always so close to Daneen and now after making such a big decision, the viewers needed to see what he has been feeling and going through. Saif’s decision to punish Daneen showed what he was capable of and even though Daneen has not been the ‘perfect wife’ but she definitely deserves better than Saif. Daneen continues to be stubborn and unreasonable therefore this is another scenario which is quite messed up. She had the option of going home with her phupo but the fact that her father completely disowned her could be another reason why she is relying on Areesh more than ever.
The change in Altamash’s attitude was the most positive development in these episodes. For a change he apologized to Izza, admitted he was wrong and told her the truth about Nashwa. Some of Izza’s dialogues were repetitive but it was good to see this track moving to the next phase. I am waiting to see Altamash’s reaction once he finds out what Nazia has done. I liked the way Izza told Kabir off and the way Kabir tried to dictate to her was also completely in line with his character. Kabir’s character is actually quite interesting. Nashwa also has a sudden interest in Altamash and she is no longer trying to win him over to please her father.
Ghazanfar’s ‘ghairat’ and ‘izzat’ once again took a backseat in these episodes when he was shown confronting Altamash and Saif both. Ghazanfar and Nazia are more twisted than they are flawed. They let their hatred and ego dictate to them – for them ‘winning’ is everything.
Final Remarks
It isn’t very often that such messed up scenarios and flawed characters have such an appeal. Anaa continues to be entertaining in its own way and a huge credit for that goes to the director and the actors involved. Even with things getting so dark at times, the overall feel of this play is never too gloomy.

The situations and feelings of different characters changed drastically in these episodes. Anaa continues to be a drama which is entertaining and it is also a nice break from all the heavy duty dramas which we see during the week. Anaa continues to focus on relationships and not issues, the anaa (ego) of some of the characters even now directs the course of some of these relationships. All the main characters of this drama are flawed in some way or the other. While the older generation still hasn’t moved on, the younger lot has their own struggles.
Daneen, Aania, Areesh & Saif
There was a time when Daneen genuinely wanted to make her marriage work even though Saif already told her that he was too busy and still in love with his first wife. When he said that obviously Daneen had no idea that he was not just going to ignore her but he was also going to control her in every way possible. The hitting continued like it was normal and Daneen kept on running to Areesh because their meetings were like an escape from a life which was boring and it was hurting her as well. This marriage was Daneen’s idea as well – a decision she took in haste in order to make Areesh ‘jealous’ therefore she is definitely responsible partially for the way things are right now.
Daneen has always been immature, emotional and impulsive therefore the decisions she has been taking so far have always made perfect sense. Making these decisions was easy for her but living this life is anything but easy. She is still living in the past and continues to take risks in order to prove to Saif that he cannot control her. Daneen’s attempts to make Areesh accept Aania as his life partner showed that even though she didn’t have the courage to leave this man but she was also not the kind of person who would destroy someone’s life intentionally. When she got the news of Aania’s pregnancy, her reaction went perfectly well with the timing. Areesh definitely lead her on by telling her that he will always be by her side and that she should leave Saif. Even though Daneen already knows that Areesh wass incapable of taking a stand for anyone at all but she fell for him yet again.
Both of these characters are immature and I am not certain about Areesh but Daneen is still in love with Areesh. While Areesh has a wife who loves him and will do anything for him, Daneen’s situation is quite different. After Areesh’s attempt to take revenge from Saif (in his own irresponsible way) things took a turn for the worse for Daneen as well. This situation also brought Areesh and Aania together since Aania covered for him. All the actors involved in this complicated, messed up love triangle have been playing their roles superbly. Hania Aamir’s expressions and dialogue delivery never disappoints. Shehzad Sheikh makes Areesh’s weaknesses come alive on screen and makes you understand the flaws in his character so well. This is who Areesh is and I have a feeling he will never change. Waiting to see how Areesh will react when he finds out Aania’s ‘secret’ from her past.
Altamash, Ezza & Nashwa
Altamash’s character has been well established as the best possible suitor for ever woman in his circle, a great catch, ladies’ man who plays hard to get and definitely someone who has his own weird way of showing that he cares. He clearly likes Ezza and cannot see her with anyone else yet he won’t pursue her, the way any other man would. Ezza on the other hand it seems is afraid of being rejected by a man who she is attracted towards but one who keeps on making her feel like she isn’t important enough. So far, Ezza has definitely tried harder to get Altamash’s attention even though she keeps on saying she couldn’t care less. The only reason she gave that statement about not wanting to marry Altamash even if he was the last man on earth was that she felt even more insulted because of the spectators.
The latest revelations about Nashwa’s personal life were shocking. Nashwa’s father and Daadi are constantly judging other people yet their own daughter is leading a double life. Even after Nashwa’s father was quite sure that she had been meeting a man, he didn’t take the kind of action which he would have if this was Daneen or Ezza. I like how the writer has highlighted the hypocrisy of these characters without being preachy. There are times when Naimal Khawar’s appearance doesn’t go well with her character but her overall performance has been solid. Usman Mukhtar fits this character so well and I feel that no one else could have brought out the good and the not-so-good points of this character alive on screen better than him.
Final Remarks
I am thoroughly enjoying watching this drama, even more so now. The performances, direction and the story is simple but it continues to give you something to look forward to. I find myself rooting for Daneen even when she is being her own biggest enemy. At the same time I don’t want to see Aania getting hurt. I wish Altamash would finally settle down and tell Ezza how he feels about her. Some of the dialogues and the situations can be repetitive but the great thing about watching a drama online is that you can forward the bits which are boring. Thankfully Kabir continues to be the ‘bhai’ and he has not fallen for Ezza. Looking forward to the next episode.

An over-inflated ego (Anaa) ruins relationships and keeps people from accepting their true feelings for each other. It makes it difficult for even the most intelligent individuals to make the right choices and most importantly makes it impossible for people to forgive and move on. This drama serial so far has stayed true to its title and explores how ego destroys even the most valued relationships and keeps people from loving each other. Everyone has an ego but some people hold their ego dearer than everything else and that is when things take a turn for the worse. With the exception of a few characters, most of the characters in this drama have been shown making the most important decisions of their lives in anger because of which generations have suffered.
Anaa isn’t just a love story but it explores relationships in general which are rather complex. The best thing about this play is that all the tracks are interesting in their own way. The drama overall has been thoroughly entertaining throughout. The fresh casting and the overall treatment given to a script which is rather simple, makes this drama one of the most engaging shows on air right now.
The Characters
The story revolves around the young characters but their decisions are largely influenced by the older lot and whatever happened in the past. Daneen’s character, played convincingly and effortlessly by Hania Aamir, is a young girl who is constantly pressurized by her Dadi sahab (Seemi Raheel) to follow the norms of the Nawab family. The softhearted and open-minded Dada sahab (Irfan Khoosat) protects Daneen and her father (Raju Jamil) is equally flexible.
The viewers who are watching the show must be acquainted with the backstory and the reasons why Dadi sahiba dislikes Daneen so much. Dadi Sahiba and her son (Shamil Khan) hold on to past grudges and play the samaj ki dewar in this love story. Daneen and Areesh’s (Shehzad Sheikh) relationship has gone through many changes in these seven episodes. What started off as playful romance became a heartbreak story really soon. The writer has convincingly shown how two young people who are in love can sometimes make impulsive decisions which they regret later. Daneen and Areesh love each other but they end up getting married to people who they never even thought of being with. These decisions which were made in anger and haste changed the entire course of the story. Daneen’s phupo Nazia (Tara Mehmood) is another person who no longer wants to sit back and watch Dadi have her way. In the latest episode Daneen was seen taking instructions from Nazia because she too does not want to see Areesh or his family happy.
Ezza (Naimal Khawar) is nothing like her cousin Daneen, she is mature, intelligent and calculated. Ezza is always the voice of reason but Daneen never listens to her. Altamesh played stylishly by Usman Mukhtar has been one of the most intriguing and appealing characters in this show. His relationship with Aania (Areeba Alvi) is one of the most heartwarming elements of this drama. Altamesh’s character is layered and different. Daneen and Altamesh are the main reasons why this drama has kept me hooked for so many weeks. Ezza and Altamesh’s love-hate relationship can sometimes be difficult to relate to perhaps because these actors share such amazing on-screen chemistry and have made-for-each-other written all over them.
Overall Impression
Anaa has a great deal going for it and even though the story isn’t entirely brand new but some of the tracks and characters are refreshing as well as relatable. The variety of characters also adds to its overall appeal. The performances and the overall treatment given to this show gives it the edge it needed to stand out from the crowd. Hania Aamir’s make-up in particular is cakey but her performance has been remarkable. I love the OST, it is catchy and cheerful. Even though the story in general is not a ‘happy’ one but the drama does not have a somber feel. I hope that this drama continues to be entertaining and fast paced.

A recent update on Meesha and Ali’s court case is here. The mother of Meesha Shafi, Saba Hameed appeared in court to record her statement as Meesha’s first witness.
Saba Hameed testifies against Ali Zafar. Meesha’s first witness appeared in court and supported her allegations against Ali Zafar. Saba Hameed is a renowned TV actress and she is the first witness in the defamation case filed by Ali Zafar.
Saba told the court that sexual harassment in the entertainment industry is common as it is in our society generally. She said that Meesha is a private person and best to resolve the issue before going public with her statement against Ali Zafar. Meesha was not prepared to work with Ali Zafar due to past incidents of sexual harassment. She told the court that her daughter informed her of the incident of harassment 10-15 days prior to going to the public. Saba recalled that her daughter told to her “I am never going to put myself in this position ever again” in reference to the incident of harassment. She described the mixed feelings of guilt and shame which stopped Meesha from coming forward after the first incident a few years back. She told the court that it was only after experiencing a pattern of behavior from Ali Zafar did her daughter feel compelled to come out or even mention the incidents of sexual harassment to anyone.
Saba further said that her daughter was speaking the truth and that she spoke in the public interest. SHE Also said that in her generation women were fearful about speaking on such matters like sexual harassment but now things have changed women are more courageous. They are speaking up and realizing that it is not their fault that if they are being sexually harassed and it is no one’s concern that if they choose to wear cloth of their choice and that should never be the reason/justification was inappropriate touching/sexual harassment or rape.
Saba Hameed disclosed that she was also aware of other women who have been sexually harassed by Ali Zafar but she is not choosing to disclose their names because of the privacy reasons of those women. She explained that it is difficult for a victim of sexual harassment to speak especially where the harasser and victim have a relationship of friendship and trust.
Saba also shared that since Meesha’s tweet, it was Meesha who had suffered more reputationally, financially, emotionally and socially. Saba also shed light on the systematic vilification campaign against Meesha and the allegations she faced about her statement. Saba said that victims who share their experiences and name their harassers are labeled as trouble makers in the industry and end up losing work. She also said that her daughter tapped into all avenues to resolve this situation but was unsuccessful and only then she takes the step to go public.
She stated that ” Meesha is perceived to be an empowered woman but it is true that even the bravest the women experience fear of repercussion.”
Ali Zafar again failed to file a reply in the defamation case for Rs.2 billion filed by Meesha Shafi. Ali Zafar’s counsels have filed an application in the court asking the judge to stay Meesha’s defamation on the ground that Ali Zafar’s suit for defamation should be decided first. Meesha counsels have turned the move by Ali Zafar a dilatory tactic to avoid adjudication of Meesha’s case against Ali Zafar. The next date of the hearing has been set to November 2019.
The makers of Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewah, Faseeh Bari Khan and director Mazhar Moin are back again with another interesting play Faltu Larki.
Faltu Larki, the drama is comical exploration of how unfair the society gets towards women. The story is based upon a girl who comes from India and lives with a family in Lahore but is unable to stand for her right.
The drama is starring Seemi Raheel, Samiya Mumtaz, Hina Dilpazeer, Sumbal Abbas and Yasra Rizvi and also new talent.
Regarding the play Samiya Mumtaz said, “This is going to be very, very different from anything I’ve done before, I’ve often been stereotyped on television as a victim or a wailing woman; I want to change that image. This character isn’t dependent on any man.”
Regarding the Indo-Pak tensions Moin shared his feelings and said, “Emotions are more important. Pakistan and Indian share the same culture and ethnicity; for example, we turn a blind eye to the fact that there were/are inter-marriages happening. It’s difficult for those people to get their families to meet and mingle, despite having so much is common. We are just bent on trying to find differences rather than similarities and that’s a theme we tried to address.”
Nabeel Qureshi is a Pakistani film director, screenwriter and occasional singer best known for making movies that tackle socio economic issues in a thought provoking yet light hearted manner. Nabeel uses a unique style incorporated in his realistic stories, which in turn has gained a lot of critical acclaim.
Nabeel and Fizza have co-written an upcoming film and according to recent reports, Quaid e Azam Zindabad that follows the story of a notorious cop will feature Fahad Mustafa as the protagonist and Mahira Khan opposite him.
Quaid e Azam Zindabad is said to be an action-comedy with lots of twists and turns and quick-witted humour.
The movie can go way beyond just paying tribute to the founder of the nation. As with Nabeel Qureshi and Fahad Mustafa coming together, there is always a message hidden in between lots of comedy.
So, we can only wait to see till they start revealing more about the movie through more of their promotional stunts.

There was once a time when Pakistan experienced mesmerizing dramas, dramas that used to be so popular that the shopkeepers used to close down their shops just for the sake of watching them once a week. With the introduction of private tv channels the literary content of the dramas were compromised. The more private tv channels were introduced more was the content of dramas compromised, it came to such an extent that Pakistani’s were left with no choice but to watch Indian “infinite” soaps. By 2010 Pakistan’s drama industry suffered the negligence and it was crumbling down to the level of Lollywood. Like a breath of fresh air Hum tv made a few dramas that were worth watching, dramas like Dastaan, Humsafar, Zindagi gulzar hai, Dil e muztar were so captivating that they brought back the attention of the audience from the Indian soaps.
Sadly, today the trend of ratings and TRPs is now bringing back the compromised writing issue. The writers of dramas have turned into such pathetic people that they are making fun of our religion. For example the trend of divorce is very common in the dramas, without watching the first episode one can easily judge that the drama will have atleast one character divorced.
Another issue is the method of divorce in Islam giving three Talaks consecutively is forbidden that is why a time limit is set for reconciliation but hats off to our writers who make sure the guy says “Talak, talak, talak” in a single breath, without even considering what will be the effect of such irresponsible understanding of religion on the audience.
Third problem is that the writers have made Halala a joke in their dramas. An example of this issue is Zara yaad kar, what type of image are the writers portraying to the audience? That halala is easy? It’s that simple? Anyone can do it without any restriction? Today almost every drama ends up in halala, why? Because people want a happy ending, so the writers feel free to make fun of much serious matters.
The issue of living with na-mehrams. I don’t want to sound like a very clergy person but last time I checked majority of people in Pakistan are muslims, I fail understand how mothers in Mann Mayal are ok with their daughter who was in idaat to live with a na-mehram. How Jeena thought it was ok for a divorced couple to live together back again under the same roof? How the mature character of Pakeeza thought it was her duty to stay in the same house with her ex-husband just because her daughter is mentally retarded grownup girl who happens to be getting married? How it is going to be ok with her in laws that that Pakeeza was living with a na-mehram all this time? Just a general question to the audience, would you people do that? If no, then why is such culture being shoved in our faces via TV?
Though a minor matter not that big of deal but when did we all started wearing whites on a death? I am sure that at time of such great loss and depression no one has enough time to search their wardrobe to pick out white only for a death! This is completely bored! Don’t portray what isn’t ours please!
I have request our drama writers humbly, that if you don’t know your religion please please don’t make fun of it at least. Our dramas are watched throughout the world just for the sake of TRPs don’t give a wrong image of your religion to the world. Writers have the power to bring about changes in the thinking of a society. Please don’t ruin ours. We already have a lot of sexual harassment and abuse cases, don’t promote a culture which doesn’t belong to us, don’t write dramas like Bashar Momin, Sangat and Chup Raho to promote the romanticizing rapists culture.
I am sure there are few or several articles have been written on this topic but I want to put my two cents in as well. So the rule of the business is to produce or present a product which the customer wants or would want. For instance if one opens a boutique in Pakistan, he/she would keep or sale those clothes which are made according to the taste of Pakistani customers not per the customers in India or any other country otherwise the boutique will not work, right? Using the same analogy, let’s see if films made in Pakistan have a purpose to attract Pakistani audiences because they are the ones (at least for now since Pakistani movies have yet to make a mark in international market) who will make the film flop or hit, then isn’t it an idiocy that these films are made according to the taste of Indian audiences by coping Bollywood movies. Usually films and dramas are a way of promoting a country’s own culture and values and some solid entertainment to its people.
Let’s compare the Indian vs Pakistani audiences, they have a visible cultural and religious difference, otherwise Pakistan would still be a part of India. Pakistan has its own identity and the fact is majority of Pakistanis have their own distinguishable and traditional values according to the religion and culture. Therefore, Pakistani films should promote their own custom, values and lessons. Many Pakistanis have stopped watching Indian movies because of the obscenity in those films. Then why would these same audiences accept the same obscenity i.e. item songs, vulgar dialogues/comedy in their own movies. Even if a small percentage of people, accept these kind of movies then don’t expect the movie industry to thrive by ignoring the majority of the audiences. One would argue that Indian movies are so successful in Pakistan; however, not all Indian movies are successful in Pakistan and the some which are, is because of two reasons: first, Pakistan is not producing its own movies or good movies and second because most of these movies are cashing on big names like Shahrukh, Salman or Aamir khan, etc.
Our filmmakers must learn from our drama industry, it had almost crashed at one point when the producers, writers, and directors started copying Indian dramas. However, when our own original product, containing our values and culture, was presented, our dramas did not only become a big success in Pakistan but received a huge appreciation in the global market and introduced Pakistan and its artists on the international level. Good example are dramas like humsafar, zindagi gulzar hai, etc. Why can’t we apply the same maturity towards our film industry and bring the original script and our own tradition. Why can’t we be more smart and try to attract the majority of audiences by making sensible movies with strong scripts and a message. We have a lot of talent in our country and all its possible when we try to think out of the box. Our film industry should try to create its own individual style not become a replica of Bollywood because in this day and age, audiences are smart enough to choose the original version not some second-rate carbon copy.
We were kind enough to ignore your outlandish behavior when your film completely flopped at the box office only because we thought that this would be the last time that you will use the common man and patriotism to make your point. In fact we didn’t feel it was important to give you any attention that you were stirring the pot for, however this time around you have gone too far and you deserve to be shown the right place for what you have done. You termed people who criticized you, as demi-gods but the fact is that you are the one who thinks has the right to insult people without even thinking how your uncouth behavior might affect these people who you pass judgments on like you are perfect! Are you really so naive that you have no idea just how ill mannered and bossy you are or do you have sick justifications in your head for your obnoxious behavior?
You might think that people have forgotten all the atrocities that you have committed over the years in the name of entertainment on your different shows be it your Orange Patiala Shalwar paired with Pink Kurti or your unsightly dances on Bolly tunes on Eid shows, but let us burst the bubble, we haven’t. We still remember how you would call regular people (those regular people who you termed as your fans when trying to sell your movie) to your shows and insult them because you thought you were better off than them and also because it made you feel a tad bit better about your sorry existence? This is exactly why the card that you tried to sell using ‘common man’ didn’t really strike the chord as you yourself are guilty of ‘disrespecting’ the common man time and again. This has become a national debate as to why people love to hate Sahir Loathe-ee, some might have solid reasons and some don’t and every time we think you are just a nobody, doing your job so you should be left alone, you push all the wrong buttons and show your reality to the world, justifying exactly why people should ‘Loathe’ you even more.

The female student that you invited on your Ramadan show to participate in a debate had a valid point and she was clearly not saying anything against Quaid-e-Azam but you couldn’t stand the fact that the audience there appreciated her without you ordering them to applaud for her. Thank you for defying the essence of Ramadan which teaches people patience, forgiveness and the art of letting go. Thank you for proving that for you ratings stand above the lessons that Ramadan brings with it. There is a limit to showing off one’s narcissist personality traits in public and to thinking that you actually have the right to treat people like this. You are a clear example of a loser who has been trying to make a place for himself in the entertainment industry for such a long time yet he still has to resort to shortcuts like these to get ratings and attention from people in order to get your presence acknowledged.
Also, correct us if we’re wrong, but didn’t you bring your mother, a woman, into a limelight to seek sympathy from people when your movie got bad reviews? Didn’t you drag your mother’s name to show what a cry-baby you are? So, what does this tell us? In the hour of need you would use a woman as a shield and in the hour of rating, you would use another woman again but for all the wrong reasons? Why so rating-hungry Mr. Loathe-ee? Why so hungry? I wish some ‘woman’ in your ‘family’ had taught you how to respect women and how to put forth your opinion in a respectful manner especially when the one at the receiving end of your scripted, calculated and unnecessary fury is a woman.
You know what, it isn’t just your fault that you are such a twisted character, those people who sat there and watched you insult that strong and intelligent woman are equally responsible for creating a monster like you. Also, those channels and producers who think you are worthy to host such a show should be penalized for putting a sorry excuse for a human being like yourself in charge of Ramadan transmission. Also, let us resort to your tone and now ask you, ‘who gave you the right to come on TV?’, ‘who gave you the right to think you are capable enough to host shows?’, ‘who gave you the right to think you are intellectual enough to be insulting people left, right and center’ and in the end ‘who gave you the right to come on TV to spread T.B’?
From the bottom of our hearts, we sincerely advise you to see a psychiatrist ASAP and get a proper diagnosis for your condition. Umera Ahmed has become quite popular in India after the airing of two her popular shows, Zindagi Gulzar Hai and Maat. In an interview with the Jaskiran Kapoor of Indian Express, Umera talks about her work and inspiration, along with a few things about herself.
Your dramas- Maat, Zindagi Gulzar Hai and Behadd (on Zee’s Zindagi) – have been making waves on Indian television, and focus on man-woman relationships. Is that a conscious choice of a genre for you?
Man-woman relationships naturally intrigue me. And I’ve been exploring it ever since I started writing 15 years back. The intricacies, problems, trials and tribulations of their relationships inspire me to give words to their journeys.
What inspires you as a writer?
Life. It’s the primary motivator as there is a story everywhere. My roots play a huge part too. I come from the small town of Sialkot in Pakistan, a town that during pre-Partition had the highest literacy rate among women, the city of Iqbal, and now people say it’s the city of Umera. My drive also comes from the creative freedom and opportunities I get in my field where women like Haseena Moin rule.
Writer, thinker or philosopher? What describes you the best?
Although I’m a popular fiction writer, I take it as a compliment when someone calls me a philosopher. I’m also an Agony Aunt constantly giving relationship advice, but tragic love storeis do get on my nerves sometimes. Because I write on subjects that deal with day-to-day life, I end up giving food for though to the audience. While critics have also described my writings as bhashan, I write about what I want and people see, hear and appreciate it.
Which characters from the serials describe you the best?
According to my friends, it’s Kashaf Murtaza from Zindagi Gulzar Hai. I am traditional in my appearance like her, strong, dedicated and committed too, but I am not ungrateful or bitter like her. Like her, I am unromantic whereas my husband is exactly like Zaroon, in civil services, romantic, more expressive, although he has never read or seen my work.
Zindagi… interestingly was also the first story I wrote 15 years back for a magazine, and it is still relevant today.
What about the men in your stories? Is it a challenge to not be biased towards women?
I don’t pander to the Mills & Boon romance. Having said that, male characters are pivotal, but have to be real too. For instance, Zaroon in Zindagi Gulzar Hai is every bit a man — chauvinist, good looking and intelligent. But when he meets a woman, who challenges and changes him, there is friction as it is not easy for a man to keep his ego aside, accept and change.
Is it heartening to know your work is changing perceptions about Pakistan?
Certainly. I am delighted because the Pakistani woman’s image internationally is perceived to be regressive. It is not true. Hamari khawateen ka rehen-sehan azaad hai. Second marriages are looked down upon and a man has to give explanations for it.
Are there lessons for Indian television programmers to learn from Pakistan TV dramas?
While we are catering to two different markets, for us content is king. In Indian dramas, emphasis is on costume, glamor and locations. Take these out of the equation, and there is nothing to get hooked to. I always believe in chasing a story.
Will you be working on any projects in India?
I don’t write constantly. It’s two serials, and a novel a year. Right now, I am writing my first Urdu feature film. As for India, I would be willing to work, but the demand for 100-plus episodes scares me. If a channel has the courage to do a 20-episode show, then I am game as I have not patience to stretch story beyond it.”

Sania’s signature aesthetic has come to be regarded as a balance between elegance, comfort and practicality. Sania Maskatiya’s brand won its first Lux Style Award for the achievement in the fashion design-luxury prêt category and was also nominated for achievement in fashion design- prêt category at the coveted Lux Style Awards 2012. In 2013, the label earned two prestigious Lux Style Awards nominations in the Luxury Prêt and Prêt-a-Porter categories. Lets know more about her via an interview.
1. How did u manage to make your name in fashion industry in such a small period of time?
Sania Maskatiya: I think God has been really kind to me and has rewarded me for all the sheer hard work and effort that is put in the business. We put in a lot of effort in whatever we do and we strive to provide our consumers the best possible product. I am thankful to our consumers and critics who appreciate the handwork that goes into each piece.
2. What inspired you to choose this profession? And what is the fashion philosophy behind your label?
Sania Maskatiya: Since childhood I was always fascinated by colour and patterns. I was one of those kids who loved scribbling and playing with colours and was attracted to pattern and even after so many years I still get excited by all of it. This is one of the main reasons why I got into designing. I specifically chose art subjects in my O’level and A‘levels, thus pursuing a career in design was nothing but obvious for me. My brand is synonymous with providing luxury and celebrating individual styles. We are known for our signature drapes and prints. We take pride in combining traditional techniques with contemporary silhouettes to create visually appealing designs.
3. Who is your inspiration in Fashion Industry, the ones you like to follow? Local and International both.
Sania Maskatiya: All the seniors in the industry like Bunto, Faiza Samee, Rizwan Beyg etc have always been a great source of inspiration as all these designers paved way for all the youngsters to pursue careers in fashion industry. Internationally, Chanel, Mary Katrantzou and Matthew Williamson are my favourites.
4. It must be a proud moment for you as Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy wore Saina Maskatiya at the Oscars. Do you plan to market your label to the masses, Internationally?
Sania Maskatiya: It was nice of Sharmeen to contact me for the clothes as I have always supported all that is Pakistan and with Sharmeen’s achievements a No! was not even an option .we were delighted when she wore the outfit to the Oscars. We do have an international clientele and we have multiple stockists around the globe. However, we would further like to increase our reach to international clients.
5. With a lot of Fashion Weeks happening around a year, do you think its a positive change for fashion in Pakistan or you see more repetition of same designs as designer don’t get time to prepare for the next fashion show?
Sania Maskatiya: I think competition is extremely healthy and with so many fashion shows happening, the Pakistani fashion scene is changing for good. I believe all the designers put in a lot of effort in putting up shows. Also, all the designers have a choice to participate in whichever fashion shows they want to and that way everyone has time to plan and produce collections.
6. Fashion weeks can commercialize and boost up Pakistan’s fashion industry at a large scale or do we have a long way to go?
Sania Maskatiya: Of course, fashion weeks are a major source of introducing your brand to the masses and I believe they have helped our industry in infinite ways.
7. How do you balance your professional life with personal life?
Sania Maskatiya: On the home front I have a fantastic support system of my mom and mother in-law. Work is a team effort, my amazingly talented design team and my business partner and brother Umair Tabani share the workload.
8. Any advice to fashion followers?
Sania Maskatiya: Take pride in who you are and don’t just follow trends blindly. Each one of us is unique in our own way, cherish that!
9. Some tips to the newcomers in Fashion Industry? The do’s and don’ts for them to be successful.
Sania Maskatiya: For all the young people I would like to quote that “there are no shortcuts to any place worth going”, therefore the only way to succeed is to work hard persistently. Along with hard work, it is extremely important to strive to learn new things every day.
Despite being the iconic Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s protégé, Rahat seems to almost always shy away from the spotlight. With minimal interviews to his name and an aura of mystery surrounding Rahat, We have caught up with the playback singer.
“It’s true that I have chosen to be relatively reserved with the media but it is something which is purely unintentional,” says Rahat, pointing to his busy schedule. “This is something I wish to change, and as an ambassador of my country, I believe people need to know more about the activities undertaken by their fellow countrymen.”
When it comes to creating music, the maestro admits that he needs to work in solitude. “I like to work in an environment that is secluded and allows me to concentrate on my music,” he says about his swanky farmhouse on Bedian Road (or to him, his humble abode), which has been transformed into an extensive music studio. “I am able to control the quality of the sound I record and ensure that my fans get only the best — something they expect from me.” The title song for Ishq-e-Mamnu was recorded there and he is also working on his upcoming music album, which is scheduled to release by year end.
“Bollywood gave me the chance to collaborate with the industry’s best composers,” says Rahat defending the switch he made. “And I embraced the transition well. For me, playback singing has been wonderful in terms of my own growth.” He feels the industry provides musicians with opportunities to learn as well as helps them establish a wider presence and name for themselves in the music arena.
While traditionalists didn’t hold back in making any comparisons when he ‘turned his back’ on his qawwal origins, Rahat feels it was inevitable and people were bound to talk. But the singer remains adamant on growing as an artist, experimenting and trying out different projects. “I starting singing qawwali at the age of 15 with my [uncle] Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,” he recollects. “And as I have grown as an individual, I have also wanted to grow as a professional and diversify. I believe in good music, whatever the genre.”
Commenting on the current situation of the Pakistani film industry, Rahat feels it never reached great heights but is hopeful that things can change if investments are made. “Right now, our major hurdle is not that we lack talent but it’s that we don’t have the resources to make good quality motion pictures,” he sighs. “We need huge investments. I wish our government gives this important industry its due attention, and sets aside a sizeable budget for arts and entertainment.”

Meesha Shafi is a talented name in Pakistan Film fraternity. She is a model, an actor, a singer and a famous face of Pakistan. She is proud daughter of Saba Hameed. She has been interviewed to reveal the artistic side of her personality and here is what she has to say.
Where were you schooled?
I went to the Toddlers’ Academy for preschool and then Lahore Grammar School till I gave my A levels and graduated from there.
Were you involved in any sports during your school days?
I was extremely athletic throughout school. I’m very passionate about a lot of sports and love exercise and being physically active. I was on pretty much every team and was a competitive swimmer and a gold medalist in diving.
How were you approached to represent L’oreal Paris as the official spokesperson in Pakistan? What factors did you consider in making this decision, if any?
It was a very easy decision to make. I admire and respect what L’oreal Paris stands for. Their image and philosophy are something I am proud to be a spokesperson for because I too believe that beauty is more than just what you see, it is about substance, talent, accomplishment and doing all with grace and self assurance.” Because you’re worth it”
After being chosen out of a population of 170 million people to represent the World’s leading beauty brand, do you feel you have come a long way in your profession?
I definitely feel extremely flattered. It gives me great pride to represent the world’s largest beauty brand and to know that they chose me to communicate to thousands of beautiful women across the country. Yes, I most certainly feel that I’ve come a long way. This is a huge and very exciting achievement.
Tell us a bit about your work as a model and a musician?
As a model, I have set standards for myself from day one. There is a lot of work I say no to. I don’t want to compromise on quality. I’ve tried to do consistently outstanding projects, be it print, ramp or commercial work. Up until now, I can safely say that I look back at the work I’ve done and am proud of it. No regrets. It’s not easy to do, because nobody likes saying no to money and work. But my standards are something I do not compromise on. Music is a brand new horizon for me. I am loving the feedback and appreciation so far. The first album with Overload is full of chances. We produced, wrote and released what we as artists like. The response has been overwhelming. Again, we didn’t think too much about what sells and what would be commercially desirable. Instead, we followed strict quality and aesthetic control and made music we believe in.
How difficult is it in your opinion to balance your personal life with your professional life, as sometimes it can be difficult for a working woman?
It works like clockwork for me. I have grown up watching a mother who runs an excellent household, is a big, successful celebrity and she takes all challenges in her stride. All you need is a little support and I am now married into a very encouraging and understanding family. I’ve been lucky to learn from the best and end up in a family full of artists just like my own.
What defines beauty and glamour in your opinion?
Grace and dignity. A woman who goes through life with poise and charm, all the while hurdling the obstacles that come her way, is beautiful. Glamour is the perfect sugar-coating that any beautiful woman has the right to don herself with. Dressing up, makeup, hair, colour, scents, all these are a woman’s territory. When done well, a glamorous woman is a spectacular sight.
Beauty has very few boundaries; everyone is beautiful in one way or another. Some people can be beautiful to me just for the way they think, what they have to say or how they treat those around them. Other than physical beauty, there are many ways to win the hearts of people. Glamour on the other hand, does have a lot to do with style, whether it be understated or very out there. It has to do with what you are expressing through being very elaborate or polished in your appearance, be it your face, the clothes you wear or even just the way you carry yourself through a crowd. But with glamour, I feel you have to have a certain degree of self awareness and a grounded sense of what works for you, since being glamorous is rarely subtle, it can quite often go horribly wrong.
How do you feel being part of L’oreal Paris?
It’s extremely flattering to be approached by such a prestigious company, to be part of a list of beautiful, dynamic and highly talented names from around the world. I’m thrilled to be one of the first brand spokespeople from Pakistan. It’s a big honour and an association that I’m immensely proud of.
Do you have any personal goals you hope to achieve by being the brand spokesperson for L’oreal Paris, how do you want to utilise this platform?
I would love to use this opportunity to help people become more confident about how they look, beauty is all about enjoying what God has given you, feeling good, being positive and surrounding each other with happy vibes. L’oreal Paris is a brand which celebrates beauty and gives everyone a chance to feel good, look good and think well. It’s challenging only because our nation gives little attention to the way the dress and take care of their bodies, skin, hair etc. But it’s a big step in the right direction and I’m honoured to be on board.
To what extent do you think you can represent Pakistani culture and beauty being a L’oreal Paris brand spokesperson?
The extent to which Pakistani culture and beauty can be represented is limitless. There is so much tradition, rich culture, exotic beauty and talent that we have to offer and the world doesn’t have a clue. We have it all, all we need is to promote it, and with a patron as big as L’oreal Paris, we can actually achieve that. As their brand spokesperson, I see the true image of Pakistan as a vibrant, colourful, young nation finally being put across to not just the rest of the world, but to other Pakistani’s who seem to not realise their true potential.
Considering the problems the country is facing today, do you think you can use this platform to send a positive message across internationally?
It is most certainly the perfect platform to encourage the many suppressed women of our country and make them realize their potential. As spokesperson for L’oreal Paris, I hope to communicate to women that they need to realize and embrace their worth.
If you were to pick a charitable cause, which one would you pick?
Most probably CARE. They have been doing a brilliant job for so many years educating and helping the less fortunate. I’m a big fan. And what our people need first and foremost, is good schooling.
You have garnered so much success and acclaim in your field, what would your message be for the young women of our country?
Believe in yourself, but don’t ever compromise on your dignity or principals. If people around you are holding you back from something you know you’re good at, do not give in. Life is bigger than what your boyfriend likes or dislikes and what your parents want you to be. If you have a talent or potential to excel in something, don’t care what people say. But remember, work is work. It is trying, tiring, difficult and frustrating. No shortcuts. That is, if you want to stand out.

Adnan Malik gets into character and talks to Instep as Khalil from Sadqay Tumhare.

We’ve spoken to Adnan Malik many times, but this time we thought we’d get hold of his onscreen character, Khalil, lovingly known as Khaliloo from popular drama series Sadqay Tumhare, and pry a little into his love life. We’re seven episodes into the play, Khalil has just been rejected by his Rasheeda Khala, he is besotted with Shano and he’s just received all sorts of threatening messages from his rival, Shano’s uncle’s son, who wishes to marry her too.
We managed to catch Khalil after he’s done reading Shano’s first love letter and we suspect he’ll probably be setting out to meet her next week…
Instep: Shano was always in love of the idea of being engaged to you but what is it about her that you fall head over heels at first sight?
Khalil: She shows up in my dreams, I’m not used to anyone getting into my space. It unnerves me. Initially I’m not really interested, in fact I’m a little irritated with all the Shano questions my family keeps asking me. I’m a simple guy; I like to play sports and study and keep things simple. People kept asking me about her and that really annoyed me but the moment I saw her, our eyes locked and it was one of those epic moments when there’s an instant attraction. When you know, you know. My world turned upside down.
Instep: You’re quite an old fashioned hero; you sing, you play sports, you write love letters and you’re really arrogant. Which screen idol do you relate to?
Khalil: I think my creator (Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar) mythologized himself and wrote angry young man, Amitabh Bachchan, into my character.
Instep: Okay, but it’s 2014, do people really write love letters anymore?
Khalil: Yeah, I still like to write! It’s so nostalgic; I love that world. Relationships are based on social media and Whatssap these days; people confess love on email. There’s no beauty or human touch to it anymore. The kind of love Shano and I have has romance and patience. Classic love is so difficult to achieve today. Our love is old school; I have to make a three-hour journey just to see her.
Instep: There’s just too much opposition in your love story. Your khala and khalu despise you and your family. What’s the game plan because you don’t seem the type to back down?
Khalil: I just don’t like khala and khalu. I don’t know what khala’s problem is and I find khalu completely irritating. I’m not used to having obstacles in life and this is very annoying. I know that I was meant to be with Shano and I am going to be with her. We love each other and nothing else matters.
Instep: Have you ever wondered how your completely vile khala and khalu could have a beautiful, soft hearted and lovable daughter like Shano?
Not taking no for an answer: Khalil faces rejection and threats in Sadqay Tumhare, but remains undeterred in pursuing his meant-to-be lady love, Shano.
Khalil: I’m an instinctive guy, I don’t think too much. I don’t understand why they’re so against me…is there something wrong with me? But I don’t overthink things; I am a very simple guy. But I am annoyed at the obstacles and will get to the bottom of why they’re opposing me.
Instep: You’re quite fashion conscious and there’s nothing sloppy or rustic about your look. Is it true that Sania Maskatiya and Omar Farooq (Republic) designed your wardrobe?
Khalil: It is a disheveled, curated look but I think it is quite rustic. Ehtasham, Mehrunnissa and I worked on an awami look with Sania Maskatiya. We wanted to keep it masculine. For western wear we went with Omar Farooq and did big collared shirts, flared trousers.
Instep: Back to your story, this doctor friend of yours seems like a good guy but we’re a little wary of his sincerity. What’s his deal?
Khalil: Doctor is my guiding light, my elder brother (cousin) and someone who’s always there for me. I can be vulnerable in front of him and he’s someone I can be myself with totally.
Instep: Do you think your love story will end happily or like all folklore will it pull a Heer Ranjha on us?
Khalil: Of course it’ll end happily, I’ll get my Shano and we’ll live happily ever after.

Q: How did you land into the world of showbiz?
A: It just happened, I just took a break from University and showbiz just happened. I really wanted to work in this industry. It took me a while to figure that out but it happened for good. (this wasn’t something she particularly wanted to talk about since she has answered this questions repeatedly in different interviews!)
Q: Is it a full time career for you, a hobby you feel passionately about or a dream come true?
A: It is a full time career, if this was a hobby, I would have left this field a long time back. Yes, definitely a dream come true.
Q: What do you enjoy doing more, modeling or acting?
A: Modeling and acting both are very different genres. Modeling is very convenient, very slow, it’s more money. But acting is difficult, it is a very long process, it takes a lot of time and hard work. Acting makes you a people’s person; every auntie in Pakistan would know me by the next two years. That is something I really like about acting, the masses get to know you and that is really nice.
Q: We all love Dina. How close is Dina’s character to your actual personality?
A: Since Dina was the first ever role I played for TV so this will always remain close to me. The very recent thing which happened to me in Dubai was that someone called me by the name of Dina and that lady didn’t know my real name. I think that was an achievement and that is an achievement for any actor. Like Mahira Khan, for the longest time everyone knew her as Khirad. That is really nice that people know you by the role you play.
Q: Which Pakistani celebrity do you look up to?
A: I have just two names for now, Saba Qamar and Mahira Khan. I love these two ladies. They have a come a long way and the way they made Pakistan proud that is something I really respect them for. Sajal Aly is following one of those paths and I really like how these women are coming out so strong.
Q: What are the pros and cons of being a celebrity?
A: I think everything has its own pros and cons. Even if you are a housewife, that has its own pros and cons too. Being a celebrity you don’t have a personal life, if you want to keep something secret, it is impossible to do that. People will always be judging you and you always have to do everything perfect. That is a very hard part because you have to keep your personal life perfect which is very hard because we can’t always be perfect. That is something really hard to do and one thing I don’t like. Talking about the pros, the fact that every Pakistani will know me by the end of the day and most of them will be loving me…I like that about being a celebrity.
Q: Name 5 makeup products that are your go-to?
A: It’s been 3 years in the industry and I am still not good with make-up. For me a good mascara and an eye brow tint work. I can’t really name much because I still have no knowledge about make-up.
Q: When styling yourself, what’s that one thing that you always keep in mind?
A: I am a very basic person so for me styling should be very basic too. A good pair of khakis, a blue jeans and t-shirt would work for me. I don’t believe in wearing, mixing and matching a lot of things.
Q: Tell us a little about your childhood? How did it shape your personality?
A: There is so much to it, I am still not opening up regarding my childhood. There were very rough incidents which took place and I don’t think it is the right time to talk about them now but eventually when I think I will be a stronger person I’ll be able to talk about them. Alhamdulillah my childhood was very smooth and easy. I was blessed with the best of best parents and a family and friends but still there is a lot that people don’t know and I think I will come out with my perspective soon.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I never disclose my future plans so sorry you will have to wait and watch.
Q: Any suggestions for all the aspiring models and actors out there?
A: I always tell people that whatever you want to achieve in life, just stay focused and just don’t forget to give your best. There are no shortcuts, you have to give your best and work harder every day. There is a new sun every morning so there is a new day every day. Just keep working hard and dream big because if you won’t dream big, you won’t achieve what you want to.

Mental health has become a huge topic world over. The stresses at every level have skyrocketed and many times people realize that someone has been gone under the bridge too far when it is too late. The academic challenges, increasing fee, and a lot many factors have made students extremely vulnerable.
One such case has happened in Faisalabad’s Institute Of Engineering and Fertilizer Research when a student took his own life by shooting himself. A lecturer at the University Engineer Rizwan Shah discovered the student when he took his own life. He called 1122 who said that it is not their case and call 15. The lecturer called 15 three times and they did not pick up the phone. He finally managed to get a van and took the student to a hospital but it was too late. The student Saifullah was dead and he left a heartbreaking suicide note. He asked his parents and teachers for forgiveness and asked the doctors not to save him.
Students of the university are protesting and asking for justice for Saifullah. According to them, the story is not that simple. Saifullah committed suicide because he failed in the exams and a particular teacher failed him three times. The university has not issued any statement yet so things are not clear.
A precious life was lost to increasing academic pressures. Its high time we spread awareness about mental health.
As Indian Prime Minister Modi’s BJP soared to victory in one of the biggest states of India, an eleven year old Pakistani school girl wrote to him saying that he should now focus towards winning more hearts of Indians and Pakistanis, by becoming a bridge of peace between the two nations.
Aqeedat Naveed, a citizen of Lahore understands how important peace between bitter neighbours India and Pakistan is. She has written to Modi to work towards establishing peace between the countries.
In her letter, Aqeedat wrote, “Once my father told me that winning hearts is a marvellous job. Perhaps you have won the hearts of Indian people, therefore you won the election in UP. But I must tell you if you want to win more Indian and Pakistani hearts, you should take steps towards friendship and peace. Both countries need good relation.”
