Gul-e-Rana – Last Episode

*Spoiler Alert*

The impossible happened today; Asher ne chai se inkar kr diya, Adeel underwent a complete personality change which made me wonder if he had eaten one of those rare mushrooms which effect a person’s nervous system and alter their personality completely, Rana’s mother seemed concerned about her daughter for the first time and most of all for the very first time one of the heroines of our dramas decided to do something that made her happy and did not forgive a man who put her through hell. Rana never had feelings for Adeel, she was forced into this marriage and Adeel did not give her much of a reason to love him therefore watching Rana finding her happiness in doing what she always wanted to do was fair enough. Adeel’s father was not even shown in this episode, he should have been given a few minutes or so if not more. Adeel should’ve had one last conversation with his father as well. This was an unexpected ending since most of the viewers were expecting Rana to forgive Adeel.

gr1

Adeel conveniently blamed his bari phupo and choti phupo for all the flaws in his personality even though the viewers saw him treating them like he treated everyone else around him. So, Adeel thought about everything he had done wrong in life while he was bed-ridden but why were the viewers told that in one conversation and not shown what was going through his mind? In episode 19 we saw a completely different Adeel who was too busy judging everyone and spying on Rana and in episode 20 after Asher and Omer’s visit he completely changed!! Why were all these episodes after Adeel’s accident wasted on baseless arguments and showing the negative side of Adeel when they could have been utilized to show how he was changing? Perhaps because showing all of that needed a little more creativity. Adeel’s friend who came to see him was seriously confused. First she said that she did not know he was married and then she says “meinay suna tha tumhari mrs. ke saath relations achay nahi hei”!! Did I miss something?? I must confess I felt for Adeel a little in tonight’s episode mainly because of Feroze Khan’s acting and Sajjal Ali was beyond brilliant tonight. All the actors did their part really well, except for Imran Ashraf and Rubina Ashraf,  but unfortunately their characters and the story did not have much to offer.

gr2

As far as I can recall only 3 episodes of this play made sense to me other than that just like this haphazard ending the script as a whole had too many unconvincing and ill-conceived twists and turns. Most of the episodes focused around Adeel and Rana’s dysfunctional marriage and this main track of the story also lacked substance because the problems between Adeel and Rana were shown in the form of arguments which most often revolved around character assassination. Adeel did not trust Rana and Rana had tons of reasons to hate Adeel but the way the change in Adeel’s attitude was shown in these two episodes once again showed the lack of vision, creativity and depth in the script. The flaws in the script, editing mistakes and the director’s inability to handle all the tracks in the story intelligently made this overrated drama nothing more than an over-crowded circus which was not even entertaining. Many of the characters that were introduced as primary characters in the story disappeared in many episodes and reappeared when they were needed. Adeel’s phupos and their daughters who got so much screen time in many episodes were only ‘used’ in the end to justify Adeel’s twisted personality.

I would like to thank all my wonderful readers who were kind enough to read the reviews and participate in the discussions. I must say that I wouldn’t have been able to continue watching and reviewing this play if I didn’t have these discussions to look forward to!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 9

This episode like the previous one did not show any prospects of Adeel and Rana’s marriage working out for obvious reasons but it did show that Rana had no intentions of letting Adeel have his own way. She did everything she wanted to do without taking into consideration what Adeel expected from her. When Gul-e-Rana went to college after Adeel clearly told her that she could not continue her studies and when she decided to share her fears with Asher the message she was sending to Adeel was loud and clear. He might have forced her to sign those nikkah papers but now she was going to do everything she could to make sure that Adeel did not dictate his terms and conditions to her any more. It was a pleasant surprise to see that Rana did not fall for Adeel’s lies but only went ahead with this relationship because no one believed her and she had no choice. Having said that I must add that the script lacks depth and this drama is not going to be anything more than a power struggle between Rana and Adeel. If the woman comes out strong in this struggle, I don’t mind that at all but if the viewers will have to watch another ‘strong’ girl’s character turning into a weak person with no common sense then it will be an opportunity wasted.

gr1

Adeel and Asher are poles apart in more ways than one. Apart from the fact that both of them belong to two different classes of society they have nothing in common when in comes to their personalities too. Asher hates confrontation, we have always seen him avoiding confrontation and he has never been able to take a stand for anyone so far but Adeel on the other hand will do anything to have his own way. He can lie and use force if that is what is needed to get what he wants. Even when Rana shared how she felt about her marriage with Asher, he wasn’t comfortable with the situation and in the preview of the next episode we see him having direct confrontation with Adeel.

gr1

The extras in this show proved to be just as boring as every other episode. Adeel’s phupos are best friends now that they have a common ‘enemy’. Maria still thinks she will eventually get married to Adeel and nothing that Rana says will change that because she has so much ‘faith’ in Adeel. I have no idea why the viewers are being burdened with Asher’s sister’s track because until now it has absolutely no relevance to the story.

Sajjal Ali looked absolutely stunning in every single scene today and her confrontations with Adeel were spot on. The first scene however could easily have been missed and it would’ve been so much better if we didn’t see a woman being violated yet again. I must say that for the first time I liked the way Sajjal Ali translated her character on screen but if we see Rana going to back to being a completely helpless person then I will be sorely disappointed. In the breakfast scene it was quite evident that Rana was broken up inside but she did not want to give Adeel the satisfaction of knowing that he had succeeded in achieving his objective. If Rana turns into a helpless creature in the next episode then this drama will be following a pattern in which we see one episode in which Rana does whatever she can to make sure that Adeel knows that he is not in control and in the next episode Adeel shows who is in charge!

In this episode unlike the last one we saw Rana showing her strengths and there was no unnecessary physical contact between the leads. The plot of the story however isn’t very promising and the side characters are annoying. Rana’s character has potential but since she has absolutely no support she might not be able to stay strong for long. Munira’s character was totally missing from tonight’s episode, which seemed very odd.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 8

This episode marked the begining of another marriage that is bound to be a very complicated one! The actual marriage ceremony was completely skipped but the viewers were shown clearly how the nikkah took place in the beginning of the episode and the way Adeel managed to “convince” Gul-e-Rana to accept him as her husband only after he forced her into a nikkah. There was absolutely nothing new about the troubles Gul-e-Rana faced today. She was helpless just like any other girl who would go through something like this in any other drama. She probably thought of her Taya before anyone else therefore she did not talk to him about whatever transpired between her and Adeel. Asking him to get Adeel married to Maria and everything else that happened after that had been-there-seen-that written all over it too.

Once again we saw a “strong” girl who has enough common sense to know better fall prey to the evil designs of a man because she could not think of a way out. It didn’t take much to convince Adeel’s father or Rana’s mother that they were having an affair – another example of how men always are trusted more than the women because the women in our plays fail to plead their case. Rana’s conversation with Alia when she went to talk to Asher about her troubles reminded me of Rameen’s character. Rameen was also someone who had tons of advice for everyone around her but was completely helpless and clueless when it came to solving her own problems.

gr1

I completely understand though why Rana could not share anything that happened with her Taya or mother – she lives in her Taya’s house, she feels indebted to him and would probably not want to hurt him by telling him what a monster his son was. Munira is a weak woman who will not be able to do anything to help her daughter and she is already sick therefore Rana would not want to give her more to worry about. Adeel’s threats and intimidating behavior left Rana with no choice and therefore she decided to accept this relationship. The only problem I have is that if a heroine is going to be shown as someone who cannot muster up the courage to take all these chances then she should not be portrayed as someone who is capable of being very strong. Adeel promised Rana that he would change if she accepted him as her husband but at the same time he did not want to hurt Maria’s feeling either which obviously suggested that he had no intentions of changing. I am still unable to understand why Alia’s track and misery has been added to this drama. Watching one woman in the drama going through so many problems is enough, why show two such women and another man who likes to belittle women and has no respect for them. Perhaps the writer is trying to show that whether it is a affluent household or a poor one men always have the tendency to abuse women but I must say that I find Rana’s khaloo’s character terribly annoying!

This whole episode lacked consistency. We jumped from one scene to the other and it was not easy to figure out how much time had elapsed in between these scenes. The marriage was too sudden, one minute we saw Rana considering what Adeel had said and the other minute she was shown as a bride. If the director wanted to end the drama at a thrilling note to keep the viewers wondering if Rana had done something to herself, he shouldn’t have shown her well and alive having a conversation with Asher in the preview of the next episode!

This drama is full of clichés and has nothing new to offer and the overacting by few of the actors doesn’t help either. Dialogues like “tumhari khamoshi tumhara gunah sabit krne ke liye kafi hai” and many more which were a part of this episode should officially be banned from dramas because they have been done-to-death. Gul-e-Rana is the story of another “strong” girl who is not likely to do anything to help herself and like every such girl in our dramas, there is a helpless and mistrusting mother behind her who will only make matters worse for her.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 7

This episode was far better than all the other episodes of Gul-e-Rana that have gone on air so far. Firstly because for a change we did not get to see a lot of Maria, Laila and all the extras who have been over crowding this drama and secondly because for the first time after the first 2 episodes I saw Gul-e-Rana as a strong girl who took a stand for herself. The worst part of this episode of course had to be the unnecessary and uncalled for physical contact between the leads. I must say that I am gradually getting used to watching Sajjal Ali get physically abused on television since she was abused in every other episode of Chup Raho and now we see Adeel treating Gul-e-Rana like she is his own personal property. Surely this message can and has been conveyed in many other dramas in more subtle ways but this is most definitely not the case in Gul-e-Rana. Having said that I must admit that the way the story progressed today was convincing for a change.

It became quite evident today that Adeel only wants to marry Gul-e-Rana so that he will be in a position to dictate his own terms and conditions to her. Love has nothing to do with this whole affair. Adeel cannot stand the fact that this girl does not listen to him. She does not submit herself to him the way all the other girls do and the only way she will have to do that would be if she is his wife. The reasons Adeel gave his step-mother for marrying Gul-e-Rana were all wrong and he knew it. He knows that Rana would not like to look after him and he is the last person she would want to marry. Rana’s sister made it quite clear to him how Rana felt about him. Gradually everything that was said and done made his decision final. Adeel wants to make Rana suffer for the rest of her life and that is the only reason why he wants to marry her.

gul e rana

Tonight it was great to see the Gul-e-Rana we saw in the first two episodes. The way she stood up for Adeel’s ex-girlfriend and later on for herself showed that she was strong enough to stand up for herself and others. It also made me wonder why she couldn’t talk to her mamoo about the way Adeel treated her since she was willing to talk to him for the secretary. And I am not exactly looking forward to this strong girl becoming a victim of circumstances like Ayesha of Sangat.

For the first time tonight Feroze Khan looked good playing this character and Sajjal Ali was at her best too. Things have taken a terrifying turn and tonight’s episode definitely gave me a reason to tune into the drama next week too. I really wish though that all this physical abuse was not part of the drama since Adeel and Rana’s relationship is going to be a rocky one (to say the least) therefore this abuse might just be a constant part of this serial. I saw a bit of Zaroon in Adeel today. Zaroon of course was toned down but he too was a flirt, he was rich, he did not respect women, he and Kashaf never got along, he slapped Kashaf and he started taking interest in Kashaf only after she showed absolutely no interest in him. The way Zaroon’s character was translated on screen of course was entirely different and Adeel is definitely a lot more aggressive and extreme than Zaroon. I really do think that the writer has taken inspiration from some very popular dramas of the past especially the ones starring Fawad Khan!

The preview of the next episode suggested that Adeel might get married to Rana on gun point, now the question is that is such a nikkah even valid? Will we see another victim like Rameen and Ayesha who will stay quite and suffer because she does not want to hurt her family? Will we see another man get away with it all?

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 6

Our hero has fallen in love with the girl of his dreams. Adeel is attracted to Gul-e-Rana because unlike all the other girls around him she does not want to marry him and now that Rana has openly told Adeel that she is not interested in him, she has become unattainable therefore even more desirable. Adeel believes in getting what he wants even if he has to resort to extreme tactics to get it. This episode showed how desperately Adeel wants Gul-e-Rana in his life. He managed to stop his phupo, was there every time Zafri tried to get close to Rana and in the end declared his love for her. Laila and Maria’s scenes remained the same as all the other episodes. You see them fighting over the remote or perhaps breakfast and they are always trying to score points with Adeel.

Just like all the previous episodes the scenes between Adeel and Rana were not very convincing or clear. The scene in which Adeel puts the necklace on his cousin and Gul-e-Rana watches him do that was utterly confusing. The looks Adeel and Rana exchanged made it look like Rana was disappointed in Adeel and he felt the need to explain himself to her. Rana had no reason to look at Adeel when her phupo announced the proposal, it suggested that Rana expected Adeel to get effected by this news. Rana does not like Adeel but we are led to believe that she is somewhat ‘fascinated’ by him too. She is very aware of his presence and his interest in her and is not doing a very good job of ignoring him! The way Sajjal Ali has translated this character on screen reminds me a lot of Rameen who always kept you confused about her personality and her relationship with Numair. Even when Gul-e-Rana tells Adeel off she does not come across as a strong person but as someone who has no idea when to take a stand and when to ignore something.

gul e rana

I don’t understand the obsession with chai at all! There is so much talk about chai in every episode. Last week we saw Zafri begging his sister to make tea and in this one Adeel wanted Rana to make tea for him and when she refused Munira aunty made the perfect tea. Later on we saw Maria trying to prove no one could make tea like her!! Surely an affluent household like that of Adeel’s can afford a better cook than Gulab Khan who can make decent chai! I won’t be surprised if Adeel is bent on getting married to Rana because he wants to drink good chai for the rest of his life!!

gul e rana

Gul-e-Rana’s script lacks depth, the characters are unappealing and the happenings quite predictable. It is the kind of drama which you can easily follow by watching the promos of every episode. I haven’t been able to connect to any of the characters in the play so far and the preview of the next episode also did not give much hope. The relationship between Adeel and Rana will get abusive which cannot possibly be something to look forward to. Sajjal Ali should stop playing these roles ASAP, somehow directors think she is the perfect candidate for playing characters in which the leading lady gets abused verbally and physically. None of the other actresses of Sajjal’s stature have ever been treated as abusively on television as Sajjal has been. She really needs to do something different. Sajjal Ali looked absolutely stunning in the birthday scene, I wish and hope that this delicate and beautiful actress will give her fans something new to watch soon! Until then we will just have to do with watching her play characters like Rameen and Rana.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 5

Adeel is the ultimate catch in this play and except for our heroine every other girl will do anything to have Adeel in her life. Adeel on the other hand has very different standards for the kind of wife he wants. He wants someone who will do everything he wants her to do. Which makes me wonder why he would end up falling for Gul-e-Rana because she is clearly not one of those girls. Adeel’s character and this whole play has a very filmy feel to it. To be honest most of the time Zafri manages to entertain me more than any other character. Adeel’s negative traits have definitely been highlighted more than the good ones. He is a bad boy who will do anything to get what he wants and he has a strong urge to control people whether it is Zafri or anyone else. He has a big ego which is only satisfied if he knows that people around him are doing things exactly the way he wants. He also does not believe in giving anyone much respect. He is obviously not a good judge of character either because if he was he would know that Maria and Laila were more likely to be the kind of wife he wants than Gul-e-Rana!

The first half of tonight’s episode made me wonder if Gul-e-Rana was still the ambitious and studious girl we were shown in the first 2 episodes because most of the time she was making tea and gossiping with her chachi. It was good to see her studying in the second half and I am glad that the viewers got to see that Gul-e-Rana is still focusing on her studies. Her attitude towards Adeel however could have been shown in a much better way. She could have shown him some respect instead of giving the impression that she was scared of him for some reason. All the interactions between Gul-e-Rana and Adeel have been shown in a very strange way. I wish we were shown that Gul-e-Rana had a little respect for this person who might not be perfect but he was her chacha’s son and so far he has been very nice to Gul-e-Rana. This strange tension that has been shown between the two doesn’t quite fit in and sets the ground for a relationship that is very difficult to relate to.

Adeel’s concern for Gul-e-Rana right from the get-go seems out of place because if he really can tell who is genuine and give that person the respect that he or she deserves then howcome we don’t see him giving the same respect and showing the same concern for his step-mother? If Adeel is fascinated by Gul-e-Rana even that impression is not being conveyed properly, the viewers can guess that based on their own intelligence and not because of the way it has been translated on screen.Everyone asked Zafri what he was doing in the living room in the middle of the night but it was okay for Gul-e-Rana to be found sleeping on the couch! It is almost as if just like Rameen, Gul-e-Rana keeps on putting herself in these situations and then she plays the victim!

Gul-e-Rana’s mother was completely missing from tonight’s episode which was definitely odd. Even if she is unwell, she should have been given some screen time. Why is every man in this play, including Zafri, in constant need of chai and they also insist that it should be made by one of the women in the house and not Gulab Khan!! Gul-e-Rana’s character lacks the spark it needed to impress the viewers. There are times when you see a strong girl in her and there are others when you feel like she is perfectly capable of being a door mat. Feroze Khan has managed to bring out the negativity in his character but he has failed to make this bad guy stand out in the crowd. He plays the lead but he does not have the screen presence needed to own this role. Both the leads in this drama have so far failed to leave an impression which convinces you that they were best suited for these characters. Sometimes an exceptional actor working under a good director can make an ordinary character stand out too and at other times even the most well written characters fall flat if the actors playing the roles appear to be misfits. Gul-e-Rana can be rated as a guilty pleasure at best – something you watch to pass time but it has nothing substantial to offer. Many of the scenes have a very unreal feel to them, you can’t really relate to them and they do give you the been there watched that feeling. I haven’t been able to connect to the lead characters and the side characters are either desperate or amusing with the exception of the Chacha/mamu. I wonder if we will always be watching Sajjal Ali and Feroze Khan sharing a dysfunctional relationship on screen. This is their second project together and something tells me that their relationship in this play is not going to be a ‘normal’ one!!

11

The preview of the next episode promised some more unrealistic drama! The whole theme of the drama is based on what happens when a spoiled brat falls for a nice girl, how appealing can that possibly be especially when the spoiled brat and the nice girl both fail to impress you!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 4

This episode of Gul-e-Rana focused more on Sajjal’s character and her interactions with Adeel. Gul-e-Rana is a strong girl who will raise her voice only when she feels like she needs to put her foot down but there were a few things in this episode that were not in line with her character. I must say that the flashbacks in which she remembers her father and her relationship with her Tayya Abu had to be the highlight of this episode. The kind of relationship she has with Adeel was somewhat predictable but I like the balance which the writer managed to keep. Adeel does not give Gul-e-Rana and her family much respect too; he orders them around like they are his personal servants, does not want them to talk back and they are definitely not allowed to make the slightest changes in the house. But at the same time we don’t see him passing the kind of remarks he passes when he is with his Phupos perhaps because he feels that they are ‘earning’ their stay in the house. Adeel is secretly fascinated by Gul-e-Rana already because he has never come across a girl who wouldn’t want to be with him or who has some self-respect!

g1

I must admit that I was expecting the opening scene of tonight’s episode to be much worse therefore I was pleasantly surprised when the introduction of our hero and heroine ended quickly with Gul-e-Rana telling Adeel that she was his chacha zaad behan! The second scene on the breakfast table however seemed completely out of place. Why would Gul-e-Rana behave like that and why would someone like Adeel put up with such a behavior? Part of this episode reminded me of MSKSH and there were bits that reminded me of Hamsafar. The way Gul-e-Rana ended up in Adeel’s house is very similar to the way Khirad ended up in Asher’s house. Gul-e-Rana’s perfection and the way her family’s presence in the house has changed everything and not to mention the fact that there is only one servant in this affluent household therefore everyone has to ask Gul-e-Rana for tea reminded me of Romaissa. Also, all the men in the house are drooling over this girl already. Adeel’s phupo reminded me of Romaissa and Nabeel’s greedy family – the sort of people who you do not enjoy watching on screen at all, their scenes are highly repetitive, their characters have nothing going for them but they get a lot of screen time nevertheless.

g2

There were few scenes in tonight’s episode that seemed out of place and the timeline was confusing as well. When Adeel asked Munira to call Gulab Khan to clean his room she said he had gone somewhere with his aunty and later on by the time he got downstairs he was informed that he was washing his car and he said that he asked him to do that when he came home!!! Is there really only one Gulab Khan in the house or many replicas of him;) Don’t rich people have drivers, cooks, people who clean for them, pick up after them as opposed to one person who does everything around the house? Sundas Tariq is a good actress but she is wasting herself playing these roles. Maria is not even tolerable. This drama is crowded with characters but unfortunately very few of them are appealing. Some are desperate and others not very impressive.

Our male actors really should stop white washing themselves. Feroze Khan needs to tone down his make-up especially the concealer because it was shining under his eyes. While Feroze Khan has tried his best to do justice to his character, he is not that convincing as the rich brat especially because he comes across only as a brat and the X-factor is missing. This character needed a certain class which is missing even with all the attention to dressing and styling. Sajjal Ali’s dressing and hairstyle remains unaltered as usual. I must say that the only actor who has truly impressed me with his acting and fits the role is Mehmood Akhter. Rubina Ashraf too has done complete justice to her role.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 20

This was yet another disappointing episode of Gul-e-Rana filled with scenes that make you question the sanity of every single person who was involved in this project. Adeel got a chance to meet two of Gul-e-Rana’s ‘ashiqs’ in this episode and Rana was more than willing to accept Adeel’s girlfriends with a smile! This drama has taken the case of a dysfunctional marriage to another level! After Omer and Asher “Bhai” reassured Adeel that his wife was not characterless somehow he changed altogether. Honestly speaking I had a very difficult time understanding the change in Adeel’s behaviour! Asher bhai played the “I am dying” card once again. The writer obviously expected the viewers to feel for Asher bhai that is why his illness and his feelings for Rana are being given so much attention but Asher’s retarded smile and his feelings for Rana both are terribly annoying to say the least. The writer wants us to feel for him but here I am wishing he is finally dead!! And if he is not than this is the third time that we are being led to believe that he is dead. First two times Rana had those nightmares which were shown as if they were real happenings in the previews and this time around if Asher Bhai survives I will personally go and kill him!!

What Omer said to Adeel was wrong but somehow Rana failed to see that! The smile on Rana’s face when she sees Asher Bhai was also another scene that makes you question Rana’s actions too. Although we are supposed to believe that both these men are nothing more than brothers to Rana yet the way she interacts with them suggests something entirely different. Just like all the previous episodes many of the characters were completely missing from this episode. I do understand that the story is about Adeel, Rana and everyone else who is either interested in Adeel or Rana but even then the way Adeel’s parents and Rana’s family completely disappears shows how poorly directed this drama is.

gr1

Yes I agree!! Servants can actually do everything which Rana (not any wife) is doing for Adeel which is why whatever Rana is doing for Adeel is quite unnecessary.  Rana is washing his clothes, cooking for him and looking after him but she isn’t doing the one thing which servants cannot do – show some love and concern! Of course Adeel does not deserve love and concern, he does not even deserve sympathy and that is exactly why this whole development of leaving Rana in Murree to look after Adeel was just plain Absurd! Adeel’s father has conveniently gone back and disappeared from the drama. It would have been good to watch him call Adeel or pay him a visit.

The only scene in this episode which made some sense was the one in which Adeel thinks about the past while his servant sits next to him, praying for him. If the viewers were shown few more such scenes in which Adeel thought about the way he treated Rana and less of Omer and Asher than the change in Adeel’s personality would have been easy to connect to.

gr2

Overall, this episode was a complete waste of time. The preview of the next episode showed a complete change in Adeel’s personality and it also suggested that Adeel might try to harm himself. Honestly speaking, I am so sick and tired of all these characters that I couldn’t care less whether they live or die!! There was absolutely no mention of Asher Bhai in the preview of the next episode therefore once again we are left wondering whether he will finally die or not – things we are forced to look forward to!!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 19

This drama never had much to offer but now it has turned into a complete snooze-fest! Talk about dragging a story to the limit and showing the same scenes over and over again and then forgetting altogether that these issues ever existed!! Some 5 weeks back Asher’s illness was introduced in the story 2 episodes later it was completely forgotten. Asher looked perfectly healthy and there was absolutely no mention of his disease. Now that Rana has gone to Murree Asher looks very bemar and his illness is being given the “attention” it deserved right from the time it was revealed to the viewers. Although I must say that in this episode Asher seemed more love stricken than anything else since this recent change in his health and attitude came only after Rana left. We saw Asher day dreaming about Rana which was actually quite disgusting since she is married and has never really shown any interest in him. Not to mention the fact that Asher is also getting married really soon and Asher Bhai doesn’t think it is important to tell the girl he is marrying that he has a serious illness. Most of the characters in this drama are living in lala land where not much makes sense.

gr1

This episode was full of awkward moments. Rana and Adeel shared most of these awkward moments in which we saw Rana looking after Adeel like it was her duty. She made sure that there were no emotions involved in this whole caretaking scenario. I liked the way this particular aspect was covered but then we saw these scenes over and over again. Adeel continued to be a spoiled brat, he wanted Rana to pamper him, to insist that he should eat and what not. He seemed like a toddler who was trying very hard to get his mother’s attention. Omer and Rana’s scene was another awkward moment which was quite unnecessary. It really did look like Omer was flirting with Rana, he brought her flowers and the way he talked to her was very flirtatious. Since when does Rana think it is okay to have male friends? Rana refused to take the gift Omer brought for her but she was very candid with him. Adeel was right in pointing out that Rana is so talkative and chirpy when talking to everyone else except him which is something which I totally understand. While I loved the way Rana treated Adeel but her attitude towards Omer (another bhai???) was not in line with her character at all. Omer wasn’t just being nice with her and I won’t be surprised if we see him day dreaming about her very soon too ;)

gr2

So, Rana’s mother just found out that Adeel had a terrible accident!! Rana went to Murree and told her! Wah!! Does Munira really live in that house? No one even told her what had happened? Adeel’s father is a rich man, he can afford to keep a male nurse for his son who will look after him therefore putting Rana in this awkward position seems really forced. There was a scene shown in the preview of this episode last week which was missing from it, something that has been happening very often on HUM. Asher’s love story once again got a lot of screen time in tonight’s episode which makes me wonder why the writer is putting so much emphasis on this track.

gr3

The episode ended with Asher’s sister finding out about Asher’s big secret!! While his disease is the last thing on Asher’s mind, the writer is bent on making him a bechara. The script of this dramas lacks depth and even meaning. We watch the same scenes over and over again in every episode as if the writer and the director are trying too hard to get the message across. Asher Bhai’s love for Rana, Rana’s lack of concern for her husband and Adeel’s attention-seeking behaviour is not the least bit appealing! The preview of the next episode suggested that things are not going to move much even in the upcoming episode therefore anyone who didn’t watch this episode can easily skip it and watch the next one (maybe!!)

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 18

Today’s episode was really special because Asher ‘bhai’ got cake with chai ;) This episode like many of the previous episodes of Gul-e-Rana had a lot of filler scenes but the story is moving forward gradually. Tonight we saw the twist which many of the viewers already knew about and were probably looking forward to also. While Asher’s murder was yet another dream, Adeel’s accident was a reality which will change everything for Rana who wants to start afresh. I must say that Mehmood Akhtar was brilliant in tonight’s episode. I couldn’t help but feel everything his character was going through. His portrayal of a father who couldn’t see his son suffering was effortless. But certain steps taken by him just like always made me wonder if he really was as wise and loving as the writer wants us to believe he is. Adeel’s father now knows exactly what happened with Rana when she was living with Adeel but he still asks her to go and stay with him, something which did not make a lot of sense. And then dialogues like “mei tumharay liye surprise lene gaya tha” made the situation even worse. Adeel’s reaction was more of shock than surprise! I felt that this particular development was not handled very intelligently. Rana’s reluctance to help the man who gave her nothing but pain was portrayed perfectly by Sajjal Ali but the background music during all those scenes was painfully loud, unnecessary and distracting. In the last episode Adeel was supposed to be in another country and in this episode he was back in Pakistan. The timeline in this episode had me confused because Rana’s life hadn’t moved forward much in this episode but Adeel went to another country and came back in what seemed like a day.

gr1

Asher and Rana’s relationship got more screen time in tonight’s episode than anything else. Although Adeel’s accident should have been the ‘highlight’ of tonight’s episode but the scenes between Rana and Asher coupled with Rana’s concern for Asher made this episode more about Asher than anything else. Imran Ashraf plays the tough guy flawlessly; his acting was superb in Sadqay Tumhare, it is convincing in Aabro and he did complete justice to his role in the first episode of Dil Lagi too but unfortunately his portrayal of a sweet man (his conversations with Rana on the phone and the smirk on his face when Rana tells him not to talk about death) is not the least bit impressive. The viewers still don’t know whether Asher knows that he has a very serious disease or not because there was mention of blood cancer in only two episodes but then we never saw Asher going to a doctor unless Rana’s company is the cure for his ailment! Asher has feelings for Rana and he is due to get married very soon but we don’t see him making any effort to stay away from the girl he loves. The writer obviously expected the viewers to feel for Asher but I am finding it very hard to feel anything for his character. It would have been much better if he helped Rana like a brother instead of betraying her trust like this. If he has feelings for Rana, he should try to keep his distance because she is married and he is going to get married very soon. This latest development in the story just proves Adeel right, other than that it does not help the story in any way.

Rana’s mother was completely out of the picture once again. Maria has done her part and now she has vanished from the scene too! Characters disappear from this drama whenever they are not needed and when they are needed to take the story forward they appear like they are the most important characters in the play! Rana’s mother at least should get some screen time in every episode since she lives in the same house. All the actors performed really well in tonight’s episode but unfortunately overall none of the developments had an impact. The preview of the next episode did not give me much to look forward to because it seemed like nothing about Rana and Adeel’s relationship will change anytime soon. The scenes in the preview looked highly repetitive and not the least bit exciting.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 17

With the exception of a few scenes and developments overall this was one of the best episodes of Gul-e-Rana. Finally, the viewers can see a strong woman in Rana, someone who is not willing to succumb to pressure and emotional blackmail and also someone who knows that getting out of her Taya’s house is going to be a gradual process. I found Rana’s confidence in herself very convincing and if her character keeps on making as much as sense as it did in tonight’s episode then I am willing to accept her as a strong woman. Rana’s conversation with Asher (bhai) went to show that all this time she was quiet because she thought that even if she shared her feelings with her mother or anyone else, she will not get any support from them. It took time for Rana to come into terms with her situation and at least for now it looks like she knows exactly what she wants from her life. It was extremely good to see Rana not coming to Adeel’s rescue although there was a time when it appeared to be that she was the only one who could help him get out of this situation. Sajjal Ali looked stunning in tonight’s episode and she did complete justice to her character.

Watching Adeel in a situation which was in some ways very similar to that of Rana’s in the past was definitely very pleasant. He forced Rana to get married to him, there was a time when he was so sure that no one would believe Rana even if she told everyone the truth and now Adeel found himself in the same situation. Adeel of course had the option of going ‘abroad’ which Rana did not have and a part of me is happy too that this marriage will not take place. It really did seem like Adeel was in Murree and he never left the country.

gr1

The reasons behind Taya Abu’s decision to marry Adeel with Maria however were not very convincing. He had absolutely no reason to believe Maria and doubt his son in the first place. Taya abu has been shown as a very wise man, someone who is not just head of a family but who is a very accomplished businessman too therefore he really should have questioned Maria even before Adeel decided to leave the country. Also, if Rana does not want to spend the rest of her life with Adeel why is Taya abu not considering a divorce instead of marrying her present husband to another girl. There are times when Taya abu is turned into someone who cannot make a rational decision even though the decisions he makes are not made in haste but he takes his time in making these ‘just’ decisions.

Asher “bhai’s” true feelings were finally revealed in tonight’s episode. The way he looked at himself in the mirror showed that he probably didn’t think he deserved to be with someone like Rana. Asher has always been shown as someone who does not have a lot of confidence in himself mostly because of the way his father was always belittling him but the recent changes in his personality might give him the courage to share his feelings with Rana. Honestly speaking I still find this particular track extremely useless other than the fact that Asher and his family’s support made it possible for Rana to get the time she needed to think things through. If she was in her Taya’s house, she couldn’t do all that she did today. We all know that Rana will never get married to Asher and she harbors no such feelings for him therefore Asher’s feelings for Rana will not effect the story in any way, they will only validate Adeel’s claims that Asher is in love with Rana. (Cialis)

gr2

I must say that even though some developments in this episode were highly unconvincing (like Taya abu’s decision to marry Adeel with Maria, not thinking about how Rana and Adeel will live in the same house now) but overall this was an episode which gave me a reason to look forward to more. Except for Rubina Ashraf all the other actors gave their best performances in tonight’s episode. Feroze Khan was flawless as someone who was losing all control and Sajjal Ali is definitely more convincing as the truly strong Rana than the one who only made tall claims in the previous so many episodes. It was refreshing to see Rana taking some practical steps to move on.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 16

This episode gave me few more reasons to hate Adeel’s ‘character’ – yes he doesn’t have much of a character but whatever character he has is not the least bit appealing at the moment. He is not just selfish, controlling, unfaithful, a compulsive liar and deceitful but he is also a hypocrite. On the other hand I definitely like the way Rana is sticking to her decision even though her mother is not willing to support her at all. The tables have turned now and my feelings about the leading characters in this play have definitely changed after watching the latest developments. Watching Asher Bhai take a stand for Rana was an interesting development, the change in his personality however was too sudden and difficult to relate to but he is much more likable in this avatar. He is more brave now perhaps because he is the one running the house and has the final authority. Even then I found it hard to believe that someone like him who could not even protect his own mother and sister from his father’s insulting attitude is now taking a stand for Rana. This was an unconvincing development but one that worked in Rana’s favour. Had Asher not taken a stand for her, she wouldn’t have been able to stay at his place.

gr1

Adeel’s conversations with Maria implied that he was using Rana as a ‘cover’ for all his ‘extra-curricular activities’. Now with Rana gone he doesn’t have that cover but it was good to see Maria doing exactly what she wanted. Although you feel nothing but pity for Maria’s character but Adeel deserves to be treated like that. The latest twist in the story however could have been far more appealing and convincing if it was shown in a better way. Maria told her Mamu first that Adeel asked her to marry her and was now backing out but her story changed completely by the time she reached Karachi . She acted ridiculously in front of her Mamu when the maid threw water on her; that particular scene made absolutely no sense. It was a comic scene that didn’t fit into an otherwise serious situation. There was absolutely no reason why Adeel’s father would have believed Maria since the maid told him too that she was living in Rana’s room with Adeel while Rana was in the house. Adeel’s father of course is in a very difficult situation but even then the way everything was shown was not the least bit convincing. Adeel’s dialogue about his reputation in the family was completely out of place too since so far the viewers were shown that Adeel was the most wanted bachelor and someone whose father trusted him blindly. If he really had such a reputation howcome his father knew nothing about it? And if he did know his son was that sort of a person why did he always believe Adeel and not Rana when he was in Murree?

gr2

Asher bhai is apparently not married yet therefore while the relationship between Asher and Rana is supposed to be that of a brother and sister but the viewers have been given enough reason to think that Asher might have feelings for Rana after all. For the first time I was really looking forward to an episode of this play but I must say that it was poorly scripted and executed. Except for Rana’s attitude everything else made very little sense. The latest twists in the story could have been translated on screen in a much better manner. Once again Laila and her mother’s character appeared on screen after so many episodes only when they were needed. I have said it before and I will say it again, this drama is over-crowded with characters but the writer and director both have failed to give all these characters proper screen time. Even Rana’s mother disappears when she is not needed.

I was expecting tonight’s episode to be very happening and exciting but unfortunately that was not the case. While it is good to see Adeel in a tight spot, it was nerve wracking to watch the way everything was shown. How many of you watched this latest episode of Gul-e-Rana? Do share your thoughts about it. Gul-e-Rana – Episode 15

Finally!! Rana did what needed to be done. All that talking in the previous so many episodes and very little action had been putting the viewers to sleep for the longest time now therefore it was good to see Rana making up her mind and leaving Adeel. Had all this happened few episodes back it would have been far better but better late than never!! Although in this episode too just like all the other episodes of Gul-e-Rana practically everything was spelled out for the viewers which minimized the overall effect of the recent developments but just watching Rana walk out of that house without Adeel getting in the way was actually ‘refreshing’!! Rana’s last conversation with Adeel before she left was also very well written for a change and had an impact because it was followed by practical steps by her to get out of that situation. It was not an easy choice for Rana since there was a lot of pressure on her for making this marriage work from her mother and Taya in particular but she managed to take a very difficult step and for the first time I enjoyed watching an episode of this drama.

gr1

Adeel’s double standards were more evident than ever before in this episode. Rana is not allowed to talk to her cousin on the phone but Adeel can spend as much time with his cousin as he wants while his wife is in the house. Adeel’s decision to pressurize Rana further by threatening her that he might get married to Maria was actually a step that worked in favour of Rana. It has given her a solid reason to walk out of this marriage and it also helped her to muster up the courage to walk out of this relationship. One aspect of Adeel’s personality that has been highlighted over and over again is that he is far more interested in saving face than anything else. His reaction after Rana left yet again proved that he will do anything to keep his ‘reputation’. Maria and her mother however couldn’t care less about what anyone thinks about them as long as they get what they want. Sundas Tariq is beyond impressive as the girl with absolutely no self-respect! She has been playing her role with perfection right from the start. Although her character is desperate and annoying at times but her acting never falters.

gr2

For the first time the scene between Asher and his father was emotional. The dead aba gave us one memorable scene before dying! The viewers definitely deserved that! The only thing about this episode which did not make sense was that Rana’s mother was out of the picture. She was shown in Asher’s house in the last scene which means she must be busy with the wedding but still there is no reason why she never found out that Rana was in Karachi. Just like all the other episodes she would be the last one to know and she will probably be the only one who won’t be willing to understand her daughter’s situation.

I must say that for the first time I am looking forward to the next episode of Gul-e-Rana. The preview of the next episode can be summed up in this one line – Adeel has met his match!! Adeel is very fond of playing games and winning them but in the next episode he will be in a situation in which it would be impossible for him to keep his reputation or the image he has worked so hard to maintain especially in front of his father. I just hope that Rana does not come to his rescue because he does not deserve to be rescued just yet! Waiting to see Maria beat Adeel at his own game! I am not a fan of Maria’s character but I am sure everyone will agree with me when I say that every man like him should meet a girl like her at least once in his life who would teach him a lesson!

gr2

Overall, it was a very gratifying episode because of the recent developments. I however know better than to raise my expectations since Rana is quite capable of doing something which will be completely different from what we watched her do in tonight’s episode. 15 episodes of this play have gone on air so far and we can conveniently expect 10 more episodes. This drama can end decently if it is wrapped up in 3 episodes in which we see Adeel regretting every single time he exploited a girl, he changes for good, asks Rana for forgiveness and she accepts him whole-heartedly. There might be people out there who think that Adeel does not deserve to be forgiven and they are more than welcome to share their thoughts. Personally I feel that if Adeel genuinely asks for forgiveness he should be forgiven because Rana and Adeel are still young, their life together has only started and they could have a chance to live a happy life together by putting the past behind them!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 14

Every episode of Gul-e-Rana has few things in common – one of the men is always seen complaining about tea, Gul-e-Rana gets lost and is dropped home by a stranger, a fight over Asher Bhai and last but not the least the lack of creativity in the script! Nothing new happened in this episode, it was exactly like the last one except for the sad news the doctor gave Asher’s father in the end. After watching all these episodes I have failed to understand why Asher is getting so much screen time and attention. Now, the viewers are not only supposed to feel for Rana but Asher Bhai too!

Gul-e-Rana continued to find solace in discovering her surroundings and spending time with the helpers. Her sister and mother acted as if she had moved to Mars!! Rana kept on reminding herself that she did not need to make any kind of a compromise or sacrifice for someone who did not value people who loved her, The clash of egos continued just like every other episode, there has been absolutely no change in Rana’s relationship with Adeel. Rana is constantly looking for distractions and Adeel wants to do everything he can make sure that Rana does not stay distracted for long. Maria has completely forgotten the fact that Adeel is married and she has absolutely no problem sitting and waiting for his relationship with Rana to end. Laila is completely out of the picture.

gr1

Right from day one this drama was over-crowded with characters. Ever since the first episode the writer and the director have completely failed to give a balanced screen time to all these characters. It is an art to create characters which the viewers can connect to and it is even more difficult to make sure that these characters are involved in the story some way or the other right till the end! Most of these characters were always annoying but even then since they were introduced as if they were an integral part of the story, they shouldn’t have been relegated in the background like they never existed.

The production values of the drama are commendable, the locations and cinematography is spot on, Sajjal looks very cute but the script lacks creativity and depth. The happenings in every episode are highly repetitive. The lead characters have failed to make an impact and Asher and his family’s track seems forced to say the least. The ‘bond’ between Asher and Rana is supposed to be really special – like that of a brother and sister – but the expressions of the actor playing Asher’s role literally put you to sleep and Rana’s obsession with him appears to be more of a zid than anything else. I have not been able to warm up to any of the characters or their relationships with each other. Taya Abu’s character was the only one in this play which was slightly impressive but the fact that he doesn’t have a bigger role to play in the story makes his character ineffective.

gr2

The preview of the next episode showed that things will only get worse from here. Rana is willing to gift wrap her husband in some insults and is gladly willing to hand him over to Maria – bravo! Asher’s family gets the news of an accident *yawn*. I have no idea what the writer of this play was thinking while penning down this script or perhaps she wasn’t thinking at all! The focus is on the locations and the cinematography and no one invested much time or thinking while penning down the script.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 13

OMG!! This drama really is going the Chup Raho way. There were so many situations in this episode which reminded me of the drama Chup Raho. Just like Rameen, Rana too is relying on God to help her, both these characters probably never heard the saying “God helps those who help themselves!” Is Rana mazloom or strong? Although Rana was supposed to be a strong character but now she is definitely a bechari who is absolutely helpless. She shouts at Adeel but is not doing anything which a truly strong woman would do to get out of this crisis. She is waiting for Allah to come to her aid, which is perfectly fine but that is what people who are majbur and mazloom do, not someone who is strong unless the writer is trying to redefine the term! If her faith in God is her strength than she should show some patience because people who have a very ‘strong’ faith in God are not so restless and depressed.

The only logical reason for Rana to hide everything from her Taya could be that her family is dependent on him. It would be impossible for someone like Munira and her daughters t o survive on her own therefore this is the only way they can continue enjoying a comfortable life. So much for ego and izzat! In Rana’s case I am reminded of the saying “actions speak louder than words” because Rana’s actions are so loud and clear that what she says has absolutely no impact. Yes Rana’s father died, we all get that but her mother is still alive but just like all the other mothers in our drama she is the last person on earth who will feel the pain of her daughter. There are a lot of women who hide their problems from their mothers because they do not want their mothers worrying for them but then Rana is just another one of those women therefore there is absolutely nothing special about her character.

gr1

There is one more reason why Gul-e-Rana is a lot like Chup Raho. In Chup Raho as well although Numair’s character was very negative but he always managed to leave more of an impact on the viewers than Rameen. In this case too, ever since Rana and Adeel got married Adeel’s character definitely has a more dominating screen presence than Rana. Feroze Khan appeared to be a complete misfit for this character in the beginning but ever since he and Sajjal have been getting more screen time together and other characters are not being given that much screen time Feroze Khan is standing out more than Sajjal Ali. There are some scenes in which Feroze Khan tends to overact but as a whole he has done justice to his character. Both the characters however lack maturity and it is very difficult to identify with these characters. Any normal couple would get tired of this never ending bickering but they can’t seem to get enough of it.

Taya Abu’s clichéd and bigoted speech was very disappointing to say the least. The speech of course was a result of everything Adeel had ‘convinced’ him of and he failed to see that his son might be lying. Later on when he decided to talk to Rana and Rana also poured her heart out to him, I couldn’t help but wish that the scene before that in which he gave Rana the lecture wasn’t shown at all because this last scene between them seemed completely out of place and both these characters seemed to be contradicting themselves. Rana did not trust her Taya abu enough that is why she stayed quiet but now again he is so important to her that nothing more than his ‘opinion’ about her matters.

We have heard Rana say that she is strong and nothing is more important to her than her self-respect now I would like to see her prove it too! Rana’s character is another run-of-the-mill characters which we see on screen all the time and Adeel needs to grow up! How does this man run a business? It seems like all he does is sit and think of ways to put Rana down! There is pressure on Rana from all sides to make this marriage work therefore it is even more unlikely that Rana will be able to break free from this relationship, not that she was trying very hard before too!

The preview of the next episode did not promise anything exciting. After watching this episode, all I can say is that an episode of Tom and Jerry is more exciting and well put together than that of Gul-e-Rana!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 12

Every episode of Gul-e-Rana makes me question the mental age of the leading characters because even a 10 year old would know that once you are in a relationship you can’t get out of, you try to make it work! In tonight’s episode we saw Rana exploring the jungle during the day, enjoying herself while she was at it and she spent her evenings showing Adeel just how unhappy she was. Honestly speaking at this point even with all his chauvinistic, narrow-minded thinking and conniving ways Adeel seems to be more eager to make this relationship work than Rana.

Rana is not cheating on Adeel by talking to other men but she is making sure that this relationship does not work out. Rana does feel jealous when Adeel talks to other girls and that is probably why Adeel talks to other girls in front of her but in one of the conversations today he did ask Rana to tell him how she felt and if she wanted him to change for her. Although I hate the way Adeel thinks and there is barely anything likable about his character but even then one thing has been well established that he loves Rana. It does make you wonder if he would be willing to change if Rana sat down and talked to him and told him what she expected from him. Why did she marry him in the first place if she wanted a divorce from him? I hate to put all the blame on Rana because Adeel is the one who forced her into this relationship but if she knows she has absolutely no other choice then the wise thing to do would be to try to change Adeel. She spends her day catching butterflies and sits down to study at night, blames Adeel for disturbing her and is definitely looking for reasons to fight. Basically ever since they got married these two kids have been trying their best to make the other person feel like they mean nothing to them when actually now it seems like Rana does feel something more than just hatred for Adeel.

. Rana does everything around the house to make sure that all is taken care of, we even saw her freezing food for Adeel before she left which suggested that she was willing to do her ‘duties’ as a wife but when she is around Adeel she is a different person. She called Taya Abu to rescue her but when he finally arrived and asked her to tell her whatever she wanted to somehow she did not have a word to say. Every time something like this happens when Rana needs to tell someone what is going on she just stays quiet. This particular scene had to be one of the most frustrating ones in this whole episode. Asher ‘bhai’ called Rana his ‘dost’ but since Rana does not believe that there can be friendship between a man and a woman therefore she keeps on referring to herself as his behan. While Rana is very comfortable sharing her problems with Asher who can do absolutely nothing about her problems, she cannot say a word to people (like her Taya) who can actually do something about her problems! The logic that she gives in the preview of the next episode is that Taya would never have believed her – well how about giving it a shot since this is a very desperate situation! How does she intend to get out of this marriage? I am guessing by annoying Adeel so much that he leaves her! Brilliant plan Rana!

We never see Rana having a conversation with her mother which is very strange. This mother daughter relationship is yet another wasted opportunity. Although Munira says she is missing her daughter and wants to see her but the viewers have only seen them having one conversation ever since she got married. We are shown instances where Rana is shown telling women not to put up with abuse which shows that she is dead against women putting up with something like that yet we see her doing very little about her own problems.

My dua for our leading characters after this episode would be that Allah in ko aqal day! And after watching this episode I am convinced that Rana is more in need of some much needed wisdom than Adeel. If Adeel is stubborn, Rana is even more so. Both our leads need to grow up otherwise the story will go around in circles the way it has been for the past so many episodes. The writer unfortunately did not put a lot of thought into penning down this script. I must say that unlike before Feroze Khan completely owns his character at the moment. Rana’s character however has absolutely nothing going for it and Sajjal’s acting doesn’t have anything new to offer either. I am still wondering why Sajjal Ali thought she was playing a strong character. Her character is not even smart! Rana keeps on giving the viewers mixed signals which tends to be very frustrating at times. The background score was used in a very strange way in many situations in tonight’s episode. It was almost as if through the music too the director was trying to show that Rana was living a nightmare when she was with Adeel and she was in her ‘happy place’ when she was in the jungle during the day! Even when Rana was explaining how afraid she was of animals the music in the background did not go with the scene at all. Although people have told Rana over and over again that there are wild animals in the area but nothing seems to deter her except for the ‘darinda’ at home.

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 11

Weird, clichéd and really really lame – that pretty much sums up tonight’s episode. Even after watching so many episodes I have not been able to relate to any of the characters. All I want to do while watching every episode is to knock some sense into all these characters. Watching Rana thinking about the conversations she had with her father in the past was long overdue! It was almost as if she had forgotten everything that she wanted to be and all that her father expected her to become. I definitely expected much more from someone who was raised by a father who gave her so much confidence but now Rana is just another one of those girls who have absolutely no choice but to put up with every ‘challenge’ life throws her way because she was forced to get married to someone like Adeel. The fact that Rana still wants to study and make something out of her life was good to see but the way she lectured Adeel’s friend when she went to rescue her was just plain disgusting! It was sad to see someone like Rana, who is supposedly very wise and who knows her husband so well blaming a girl in such a situation. In fact all those dialogues seemed completely out of place. The way ‘Islam’ was dragged into the whole scenario was even more lame! I must say that other than the hitting and useless confrontations between Rana and Adeel, this was the worst scene in this entire episode.

gr1

The episode opened with Rana trying to adjust to her new environment and very soon she realized that she would have to deal with much more than Adeel’s annoying presence in her new house. Munira once again was out of the picture but I am sure she will be back when someone is needed to plead Adeel’s case. Like every other episode ‘chai’ was a very important part of this episode as well! Someone or the other must fight over who will make chai or whether they will make it or not or like this time when Rana spilled Adeel’s tea on purpose it was equivalent to breaking Adeel’s heart. What surprises me is that although Rana hates Adeel and Adeel looks down upon Rana but somehow both of them still manage to disappoint each other! The reactions are very strange and definitely not something I have been able to relate to. Rana hates Adeel and expects the worst from him for obvious reasons but even then she seems disappointed and shocked when she hears Adeel talking to a girl on the phone. Adeel looks like he is really sorry after he is caught red handed but the next morning, he is back to being his old self! Rana yet again decided to talk to Asher bhai about her troubles because just like any other heroine she does not want to talk to someone who can actually do something about the situation. I found it funny when Asher volunteered to talk to Adeel about the problems Rana was facing since he is definitely not the kind of person who can plead anyone’s case.

gr2

This power struggle between Adeel and Rana is getting boring, monotonous and nothing ‘productive’ is coming out of it. The writer and the director have tried very hard to make the viewers feel for Rana by making her character holier than thou and adding the background score but personally I am finding it very hard to feel for her character since she seems to be creating situations which in no way help her but get her into even more trouble. Adeel’s character has absolutely nothing going for it, it keeps on turning from bad to worse. The direction of the drama and the script is extremely weak right from the get-go. The preview of the next episode showed that Rana will once again do something adventurous to get herself out of the situation she is in and that makes me wonder why she can’t just talk to her Taya abu instead of getting herself in these situations over and over again!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 10

Gul-e-Rana and Adeel continued trying to put each other down all through tonight’s episode like it was a competition and whoever won was going to get a special award in the end! The only award these two deserve is one for being extremely immature. This is not the first time in a drama that a very serious and sacred relationship like marriage has been turned into a child’s play. If the writer’s intent is to show a newly-wed couple who does not understand that relationships don’t last the way these two are taking things forward then he is spot on but since this drama has absolutely no depth therefore I doubt that the writer had some higher purpose in mind. While I was happy after watching the last episode because it looked like Gul-e-Rana was not going to let Adeel have his own way, I was extremely disappointed to see her playing games to displease Adeel in this episode. If she does not want to compromise or go out of her way to make this marriage work then that is her own choice but resorting to childish tactics to get Adeel ‘in trouble’ was extremely foolish of her.

If Adeel is at fault for not respecting his wife and for forcing this marriage on her then Gul-e-Rana is to be blamed for treating this relationship in an equally casual manner. While she never had the courage to talk to her Taya about the more important things in life, she had no problem telling Taya Abu about Adeel’s outing with Maria which she planned. She knows what Adeel is capable of doing terrible things therefore instigating him in this manner is nothing but foolishness. Every time Rana has tried to put Adeel down, he has done something even worse than before to make Rana’s life miserable therefore it would have been more realistic if we saw her trying to keep herself out of trouble. I understand that Rana is too young to deal with this man tactfully but she is smart enough to know that provoking him will only land her in more trouble. Rana got married to this man thinking she could continue living her life the way she wanted once Adeel got the satisfaction of marrying her but it was most certainly not an intelligent move. While I think that Rana’s character is very immature, I must say that I can relate to the way she feels about Adeel. It is very difficult to respect someone like him but then a girl should never get married to a man she hates! If this drama is sending out any message at all then it should be that marriage is not a joke and marrying someone like Adeel will make you miserable for the rest of your life but I wonder how many girls Rana’s age would look at the story with this perspective.

gr1

Munira made an appearance today to serve the purpose she is there to serve – making sure that her daughter does not get an ounce of understanding or support from her. It is really sad how the mothers in our dramas are ‘used’ to make matters worse for their daughters. Adeel openly flirts with his cousins, something Munira somehow fails to notice and thinks he is the ideal match for any girl.

I must say that Gul-e-Rana’s character did remind me of Rameen’s character in tonight’s episode. Firstly because just like Rameen she is helpless, no one will believe her even if she tells her mother or Taya something because Adeel is too clever, just like Numair. Secondly because Rameen too used to threaten Numair a lot verbally but in the end things used to happen the way Numair wanted them. And most importantly Rana too has a mother who could not care less about her daughter’s happiness.

It would have been great to see a story of a young couple struggling through the first few years of their married life if it did not involve a forced marriage and a husband like Adeel. I wish that the writer did not show Adeel as a womanizer but as a man with some serious weaknesses in his personality (stubbornness, ego) which he ultimately managed to overcome with time. It would also have been good to see Rana’s mother guiding her daughter through this phase of her life to make this marriage work! Well, as the preview of the next episode showed that is most certainly not the case here therefore we will have to do with watching another husband on screen who thinks he can get away with anything and a wife who really does not have a choice but to put up with it all!

g5

I watched Gul-e-Rana particularly because many of the fans on our facebook page kept on requesting for a review and also because of the way many viewers have expressed their love for the drama on various pages. After watching all the three episodes of Gul-e-Rana that have gone on air so far I must say that I am not entirely blown away. The biggest strength of Gul-e-Rana for me was the relationship the main protagonist Gul-e-Rana (Sajjal Ali) had with her father Abdul Aziz (Behroze Sabzwari). Behroze Sabzwari has nailed every single character he has played lately. He completely won me over as Yousuf’s father in Mera Naam Yousuf Hai and now in Gul-e-Rana, the first episode in which he got a lot of screen time he totally overshadowed everyone else. He has an undeniable screen presence and a natural chemistry with all his co-stars.

g1

Gul-e-Rana so far is the story of Gul-e-Rana’s family – her mother (Rubina Ashraf) and a sister who are left to fend for themselves after their very caring and loving husband and father dies in a car crash. Due to financial restraints Gul-e-Rana and her family are forced to live with Kamal Ahmed (Mehmood Akhtar), who is Gul-e-Rana’s father step-brother. Kamal Ahmed is a very kind man who feels that it is his duty to take care of the family of his dead brother. Kamal Ahmed’s sisters and their two daughters are however a completely different story! They have to be the most fairytale like characters in this drama. I am not saying that such people do not exist in real life but they did remind me of Cinderella’s step-mother and her daughters who would have done anything to get hold of the prince but it was Cinderella who got the prince in the end. This family also reminded me of Romaissa’s greedy in laws. The role of the prince charming has been played by Feroze Khan. Adeel (Feroze Khan) is Kamal Ahmed’s only son and he thoroughly enjoys all the attention he gets. Adeel knows that he owes a lot of this attention to his wealth but that is not something he is ashamed of! Adeel is the most eligible bachelor and watching all the girls fight over him wasn’t exactly entertaining! Adeel does not believe in giving anyone much respect and makes sure that his phupos know where they stand in his life. Gul-e-Rana’s first meeting with Adeel was just as clichéd as many of the characters in the play and the hand on mouth ending of the third episode reminded me of Chup Rahi *shivers*. The preview of the next episode also suggested that the viewers will most probably see Sajjal Ali and Feroze Khan having another abusive relationship in this drama. I must say that I am very bored with watching Sajjal Ali being abused on screen, the producers and directors really need to offer her roles that do not entail pointless physical contact and unnecessary shoving around!

g2

In my opinion so far the veteran actors stand out in this play more than the young lead. Behroze Sabzwari, Mehmood Akhtar, Farah Shah and Samina Ahmed have done a brilliant job of portraying characters that have nothing new to offer. Sajjal Ali fails to change her look, the same short shirts and patiala shalwars remind you of all the characters she has ever played. Same is true for Sajjal’s acting which is natural but it lacks versatility. There was a time when I was very impressed by Sajjal Ali’s powerful portrayals in dramas like Nanhi but unfortunately Sajjal has not been able to change her outlook or expressions much in all these years. The story of the drama is predictable. Our hero will fall for Gul-e-Rana and imagine how all those women who are after the prince charming react to that! Since our prince charming doesn’t know the first thing about respecting women therefore this relationship won’t exactly be ‘normal’. So basically we have a lot of conspiracies to look forward to!

g3

The production values of the play are great. The lighting, make-up and the visuals are very pleasing but so far the script has nothing extraordinary to offer. The hero fails to impress you and the heroine reminds you of many other you might have seen on-screen. Gul-e-Rana is sensitive and practical but there is nothing too appealing about the character. The most appealing aspect of Gul-e-Rana’s life was the relationship she had with her father which came to an end in the second episode. It is highly unlikely that Gul-e-Rana will be able to make her father’s dreams come true. Adeel’s phupos’ obsession with getting their daughters married to him already seems repetitive and annoying especially because he does not even give them an ounce of respect. The OST of the play is sweet and melodious but it has been overused in these three episodes. Overall, these 3 episodes were strictly okay, while there are no glaring flaws in the story there is nothing terrific about it either.

Campaigns celebrating feminism are being used by brands to advertise everything from deodorant to designer clothes. And it’s a theme which, if executed right, can resonate well with audiences both female and male alike.

A very interesting campaign by Gul Ahmed Fashion, about breaking stereotypes and being comfortable in your own skin is absolutely amazing. Fashion statements in recent times are surely developing for good. Girls, be proud and stand out!

Gul Ahmed’s Ad Parody Is Breaking The Internet

Gone are the days when advertisement agencies would use cheap tactics to attract consumers to buy their products.
