Goya-Episode 18 Review

Is there an unspoken rule that binds all writers into eventually converting every story into a dosri biwi one? Zara has miraculously recovered from her mental anguish having suffered the loss of her beloved and is now being mentored by the unstoppable Rahat Hashmi into controlling Omar. What started off as a marriage of convenience is quickly becoming the kind of situation that we’ve seen many a times in a plethora of dramas. Mohini is still comatose for the most part except for a few attempts at dark humour. Her outburst gave me a glimmer of hope but I don’t exactly have the kind of patience anymore to put up with her insecurities. Zeb is getting on every last nerve but somehow everyone in the Hashmi household is immune to her. Hamara nok jhok Ka rishtaa banta hai... I feel far too many scenes are wasted with Zeb – whether she’s challenging those around her or trying to jog Rahat’s memory. After all these episodes with Zeb, whatever suspense may have existed once upon a time is no longer there. Haniya is under house-arrest and tells Rahat that under no circumstances will she agree to an abortion.

Rahat is the Big Bad Wolf who continues huffing and puffing at everyone but becomes subdued in front of Zeb’s khushboos. In Muree, Zuberi Sahab is stalking Asma Mirza. Despite his creepiness, he seems to be the only voice of reason around. Omar, sweetheart, what have you been thinking? He knew Mohini was alive and expecting. Has Omar forgotten that he was about to become a father himself before he agreed to the wedding arranged by his own? Ab jab shadi ho hi gayi toh nibhaani to parey gei... At least Omar knows that Mohini will not forgive him his dosri shadi

The last thing I’d want is for a Mohini vs Zara showdown has decided to take over the business and makes his way to Muree where he spots Asma. There was a missed opportunity of an encounter there- Yeh na thi hamari qismat ke visaal-e-yaar hota...Like Asma, I too am curious to know what Mohini wants. Maybe next week when Omar finally grows a pair?

Goya- Episode 9 Review

Just when I feared the buson ke dhakkey would start to get to Omar, I was relieved to see him take pleasure in the little things in life. While he may be struggling, he has a strong support system in the form of Mohini and Mrs. Mirza and that pretty much completes him. I think all he ever wanted was to be loved and here in the midst of these two women, he gets all the attention he has been craving. Even though he is supposedly the man of the house, he is conditioned to following instructions so Mohini has full control over his actions. I was happy to note the conversation between Mohini and her mother where unlike our sazish- bhari TV moms, Asma advised Mohini to back off and let Omar be.

imagehs

The scene where the trio went to thank Adnan was nice- a little awkward initially but Adnan isn’t one to let anything embarrass him. Further to their brief discussion on how Omar commutes to work, Omar is handed car keys by his office and told that the CEO has tweaked the contract to allow for a car. Thankfully we won’t be seeing Mohini pretending to drive anymore! Sr. Hashmi seems to enjoy belittling his junior every chance he gets- Hamesha dosron pe depend karney wali, fakheeron jaisi fitrat toh nahin develop hoti tumhari… In the heat of the moment, Omar decides he will quit Adnan’s job but Mohini’s “breaking news” distracts him. It appears that the two are expecting a child and Mohini tries to make Omar realize that he can’t allow his father to get to him since he has a responsibility now not just as a husband but as a would-be father too.

images

Rahat Hashmi is so full of himself he leaves no opportunity to put others down- I’m starting to think Haniya is getting a little sick of his attitude. Haniya is no gold-digger and it wouldn’t surprise me if she leaves Rahat. In fact, I’m secretly hoping she leaves him. A new character was introduced tonight- a Bengali housekeeper- Zeb-un-Nisa. Rahat’s sudden change of body language gave away that he is extremely uncomfortable seeing Zeb-un-Nisa and he tries to make petty excuses to get rid of her but Haniya decides otherwise. Some quick flashbacks reveal a vision of a lady that sends Rahat into a pool of sweat. Did Rahat have an affair with someone he’s lived to regret? Zeb’s expressions state that she too knows Rahat Hashmi and she probably planned on coming here. Rahat is turning out to be far more intriguing than I ever imagined.

imagges

I’m thoroughly enjoying Omar and Mohini and their casual, sarcastic exchanges. There’s simply one word to describe these too- CUTE! I liked how Omar reacted to the overuse of the word and I’m grateful for that. It’s nice to see that the level-headed Mohini has a personality that defines her in every relationship. She knows when to take charge of the situation and she knows when to let go. I’m dreading seeing these two break apart. They are just MFEO! Looking forward to seeing more next week.

Bheer mei bhi hum tanha rahein, tere gham ne yeh halath kardi… Gohar Rasheed has played the role of the dysfunctional Adnan to absolute perfection. I cannot help but praise his flawless acting especially the way he switches his temperament. His face-off with Sr. Hashmi was extremely well done- the fact that he could hold his own against a stalwart like Usman Peerzada speaks oodles about his acting abilities. For me, he was the highlight of the episode. I liked the confidence with which he stated his self-worth to Rahat Hashmi- Adnan is not afraid of Rahat probably because he has witnessed much worse. A part of his arrogance can also be attributed to his bachpana as Haniya pointed out. Or maybe he’s just too groggy to know what he’s doing. We got to know a little more about Adnan today- he owns three successful businesses which explains his resources, his father resides in London and is a former governor. He has a strained relationship with his father which is probably why he is taking a stand for Omar who has yet to take a stand for himself.

Mrs. Imtiyaaz has been replaced by Mohini in Omar’s life. She’s the one who picks his clothes, prepares his meals, gives him a ride to work, ensures he has a little extra pocket money in case he needs it and shows genuine concern for his safety- Office mein koi tumhe cher raha hai kya??? While Omar is clearly dependent on her, he doesn’t like the feeling of being controlled- Ek Undertaker se jaan churi toh dosri samney agayi... Omar doesn’t realize the seriousness of the situation- he has to make a life for himself and Mohini but is still living in La La Land. Ab apka mere har joke pe hasna farz banta hai… Omar and Mohini’s relationship is going great guns but I doubt it’ll remain this way for much longer. As much as I liked Nomi’s sensibilities, I am getting the feeling that he is starting to get to Mohini. Often times, before there is a real problem, the interference of outsiders makes one take note of something that may not be as big a deal as they are making it out to be. I get that he cares for Mohini but she knew what she was getting into when she married Omar so somewhere in the back of her mind, she knows she may be in for a rude awakening,

Adnan likes surrounding himself with people to divert his mind from his own messed up life which is why him and Zara get along like a house on fire. I don’t know if there’s any budding romance there but there is certainly a very mutual understanding and to some extent maybe even a liking. I think the closest he ever gets to being himself is when he is with Zara. The saudagaars- Hashmi and Saleem Sahab are both fully aware of what their prospective bahu and damaad are up to yet for the sake of not millions but billions, they are willing to continue their deal. It doesn’t seem to matter that their children are on the path to self-destruction and they clearly want nothing more than their own financial gain.

As much as I enjoy watching Mohini and Omar, I’d like to see their story go to the next level. Also, I wish they’d stop showing those scenes of Mohini driving with the fake background as it distracts me from enjoying their conversations. With Ali moving to Dubai, the focus will fall entirely on Adnan and I’m just a little afraid he may snatch the spotlight from the lead pair. 8 episodes down, Goya is progressing steadily and I’m hoping it continues to maintain the pace. What do you think?

Previews are becoming quite the topic of discussion. Last week’s preview hinted at Omar backing out at the eleventh hour so the episode was a complete shocker. Omar’s everything, his fairy godmother- Mrs. Imtiyaat succumbed to the grim reaper aka Sr. Hashmi. Omar knew love only through the kind-hearted Mrs. Imtiyaaz. Not only was she faithful to the Hashmi’s, she genuinely loved Omar like her own and was trusted by his late mother with her bahu ki amanat. Having lost the woman he loved so dearly, Omar was guilt-ridden and felt unsure about going through with the wedding. After the dhamakedaar dholki, the shaadi was free of any shenanigans.

index

The kawwey ki tarhan ganey wala Adnan was the life of the party and interestingly enough, the ease with with he switched gears between the singing/ dancing and the flirting was sublime. I’ve never seen Gohar Rasheed except in a brief cameo and I thought he was brilliant. Ali continues to guide Omar through his uncertainties but it appears that Adnan is the one who is really looking out for him; he is very keen to have Omar and gang continue living with him for ever and ever. I would love to know more about why he is the way he is and if the story of his father having multiple wives is actually true.

index1

Omar seems content moving in with Asma and Mohini after marriage as if it were perfectly natural to have a ghar-damaad. Omar has a long way to go and Nomi said out loud what most of us may be thinking- I don’t trust him! Seeing Asma and Mohini’s sensibilities, I can’t help but wonder why the mother-daughter duo took a nosedive into consolidating the chatt mangni patt biyaah. Jald bazi ke faislay aksar pashtawey ka baiss bantey hein…

images1

Mrs. Imtiyaaz’s sudden death and Rahat’s cold reaction disturbed Haniya more than I had expected. This incident made her question the man she married all those years ago. She even went as far as going against her husband’s demand and informing Omar of his loss. Rahat is so full of himself he considers himself a visionary. He finds nothing wrong with the way he conducts his affairs and has now taken it as a challenge to bring his son to his knees. He has spent considerable time and money on his biggest investment and expects huge returns. What remains to be seen is how far he will go to reclaim what he believes belongs to him!

What did you make of this episode? Any guesses about what happens next?

Aap ki di hui har cheez yahan chor gaya hai- siwaye apni zidd! Omar is more like his father than he realizes. Imagine if there was a magic mirror here- Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall, Who’s The Ziddiest of Them All? I’d place my money on Omar for now… While Rahat continues masterminding his son’s eventual return by asking Ali’s father to toss him out of his Clifton home, Asma and Mohini are planning the inevitable wedding. Asma knew if it came down to choosing between her career and her daughter’s happiness, she’d give up the former in a jiffy but not without reminding Sr. Hashmi of his aukaatAap ke khaandaan ne siwaye paisey banane key koi aisa kaam nahin kiya jis se aap fakhar se sar ooncha kar sakein… Rahat always assumed he could continue to control people through their majburis but Asma is not one to be overpowered by her boss. She happily celebrates her jashn-e-azaadi although I wonder how long it’ll be before she starts questioning her decisions.

download

There was a moment of reflection when Rahat asked Mrs. Imtiyaaz about Omar. Toot jaye ga– probably for the first time, he sounded like he genuinely cared about his son. Is Rahat afraid to have Omar experience the hardships he may have had along his journey? Or is he driven by his need to control? Or a bit of both? Ali tries to help in the only way he can- by finding Omar a place to crash until he is able to afford a rental. So Omar ends up with Adnan taking him in. Remember Adnan? The junkie from the beach? Yeah, him. He’s the rich brat who’s always on a high and wants to share some of it. Before you know it, Omar gives in to peer pressure and has a few puffs himself. Sensing something like this was bound to happen, Mohini goes over to try and knock some sense into him. Adnan tries to help out in his own way- by trying to arrange an interview for Omar. This was exactly the sort of thing Rahat didn’t want Omar to be doing with his life. If only he had used a midway approach instead!

I get that Asma wants Mohini to be happy but is rushing her into marrying Omar the best for both of them? Agreed, Omar has made his intentions very clear but he has a long way to go before he can handle the responsibility of a marriage. Omar is entirely dependent on Mohini and while he needs to know that she’ll stand by him, she can’t baby him forever. In time, she will grow tired of making all the decisions for him, telling him what he should and shouldn’t do and similarly, Omar will start to feel suffocated all over again. Episode 6 ended with dholki preps and the baraatis getting ready to party. On a side note, is Mrs. Hashmi related to the house-help? I thought I was seeing doubles.

Goya- Episode 5 Review

Shayad meri shadi ka khayal dil mein aaya hai, iss hi liye Daddy ne merey tumhey chai pe bulaaya hai… When Omar broke the news to Sr. Hashmi that he has no intentions of going ahead with the wedding, Sr. Hashmi asks to meet with Mohini Mirza. Somehow, even though Omar is fully aware of his Undertaker father, he holds on to the glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, the man has a change of heart. As expected, the meeting was nothing more than to intimidate Mohini into leaving Omar. Sr. Hashmi thinks Omar is simply going through a rebellious phase and once he’s over it, he’ll get back to being the obedient son. Demaagh toh tumhara sahi kaam karta hai, yahan tumhari logic kyun fail hogayi? Do we really use logic before we fall in love? If only we did, we’d save ourselves the pain and heartache that we so often experience at the hands of love. Rahat Hashmi is void of human emotions- he has built a wall around himself. He treats everything as a financial transaction- apki yeh adat hai har cheez paise se khareed ne ki- biwi, bahu… Omar confided in Mohini that when Sr. Hashmi married Hania, she had nothing to offer- maybe she was not of the same financial status but nevertheless, Rahat took her as his wife- was Hania an opportunist? Did she marry Rahat for his money or did she get pressurized into marrying him?  Can money ever buy love? Or even happiness? Rahat’s arrogance has made him a cold, bitter man who can’t see beyond the P & L statements. Yeh mera maamla hai, meri commitment hai, meri deal hai, meri business hai, meri future hai…

index

Having met Sr. Hashmi, Mohini finally understands why Omar was enamoured by her- uskey saath meri zindagi asaan hojati hai. She is determined to be with Omar but what I really admired about her was how she left the final decision to her mother- yeh ikhtiyaar sirf aapkey paas hai. I think when parents empower their children with the right to make their own decision, children respect their parents faith in them and ultimately end up trusting them to make their life choices. Here again, even though Asma knew Rahat Hashmi would never accept Mohini, she encouraged Mohini to go ahead and meet him for herself and then think long and hard. Despite her pain at his cruel words (Tum kyun shaam-e-ghareeba bana rahi ho?), she confided in Asma that she feels she wants to be a part of Omar’s life and Asma is ready to stand by her.

The most powerful scene was the confrontation between Omar and Rahat after meeting Mohini-
Tumse mera naam aur yeh rules cheen liye jayein toh peechay sirf ek bewaaqoof insaan bachey ga jiski networth zero hai… mutaalbey aur muzaakaraat jo hain baraabari pe hotey hai… Tum mere baraabar nahin ho! After that jolt of reality, Omar vents out by thrashing his room and once he gathers himself, asks Ali to help him find a place to stay. Ali tries to knock some sense into him- it won’t be as easy as Omar thinks but seeing his determination, Ali offers his Nani’s apartment. I like Ali- he understands Omar but offers practical solutions. Like Sr. Hashmi, Ali also feels that Omar is just going through a phase and once he has had a chance to get over it, he’ll be back home living the life the way his father dictates. Omar announces his decision to leave, but not without rubbing it in Sr. Hashmi’s face- aapka yeh ghuroor bhi mein ek din toronga… Please koi choti harkat nahin ki jiye ga… I think for the very first time, Omar is not afraid to lose anything since he is foregoing the luxuries he grew up with and is finally heading towards a real goal. All those years of being submissive have pushed him towards retaliation and he is looking forward to being in a rule-free environment. Let’s see what the future has in store for Omar- one thing’s for sure- it is not going to be a cakewalk and Sr. Hashmi will only add to his troubles. What do you think?

It didn’t take very long for Zara to reveal her real self- she’s struggling with a drug addiction and wants to go into rehab and get her life back on track. I liked how they didn’t dramatize her plight- Omar didn’t judge her one bit and why should anyone? Here’s someone who has the strength to own up to her weaknesses and is trying to find a way out. She doesn’t want to get married but she knows that she won’t be able to convince her parents so she tries to get Omar to call off the wedding- Larko aur larkiyon mein yehi toh farq hota hai- Wohh halaath ko apney favour mein mould kar sakte hein… Larkiyan ye nahin karsaktein…. This was just the kind of push Omar needed to take baby steps towards voicing his innermost feelings. Knowing that he still can’t muster the courage to face Sr. Hashmi, he marches towards Mrs. Hashmi and makes his stance clear. Mrs. Hashmi tried to reason with him- Rahat ko sirf numbers dekhayi detey hein… Hamarey finances ke halaath bohut kharaab hain… She consulted Mrs. Imtiyaaz to find out if she had any info on what brought about this sudden emotional upheaval. Aisi jurratein sirf mohabbat ki wajey se hosakti hein… Even though Mrs. Hashmi would prefer she stays out of this father-son drama, she chalked out a contingency plan and meets Mohini.

Omar’s in a rush to have things fall into place- he has never had control over his life so he doesn’t quite get how this works. Ye again, Ali was there to make him realize he’s jumping ahead without thinking things through. Tu halka hoja; tu koi itna haseen nahin hai ke ussey love at first sight hojaye! Give her some time and space yaar! Tu marr kyun raha hai? Ali’s advice falls on deaf ears and Omar makes his way over to Mohini’s house and pops the question- Mein itna convince nahin huwa ke baaz ajaoun. Ab meri baari hai to be honest with you- Mein tumse shaadi karna chahta houn! I think this shocked both of them- Mohini sensed Omar was steering in this direction but she never imagined he’d actually blurt it out the way he did. Omar had never before done anything out of his own free will and this felt liberating although he looked as if he surprized himself.

Asma has started liking Omar- Agar Sr. Hashmi tameez ke admi hotay toh mein tumhari foran Omar se shaadi karadeti… She only wants whats best for her daughter- be it Omar or Nomi (jisney aaj line maari hai). Omar wants Mohini to say yes but he’s trying to play it cool and asks her to accompany him to the beach- an excuse to get to know eachother and their friends better. I liked seeing Nomi and Mohini’s equation. Nomi knows Mohini is not into him but that doesn’t deter him from being a friend. He accompanies her to the beach and even puts up with Ali’s pakao, moo boli girlfriend, Aiza. Zara shows up with her doping partner- Gohar Rasheed.- uninvited? The rendition of Sarr Kiye Yeh Pahaar was nicely done- seeing all of them get along  just felt very real unlike the usual Jr/ Sr conversations. Seems like Omar has gotten through to Mohini and is willing to forsake his jaidaat et al. Let’s see how Asma takes this bit of news.

Hmm, so rounding up today’s episode- was there a continuity issue in the scene where Omar went to make coffee? Or was that supposed to be another day and time? Did anyone miss Sr. Hashmi? What did you think of Omar’s proposal?

Goya- Episode 3 Review

Confession. Contemplation. Commitment. Omar and Mohini have come a long way in a short span of time. Omar enjoys spending time with Mohini and felt it was important for her to know why he is the way he is- Mujhe bachpan se kuttay ki tarhan treat kiya gaya hai- just like a trained dog! The otherwise awkward Omar is completely at ease with Mohini. She brings out a different side to him- one which he has never had the chance to fully explore. Upon finding out that Mohini is missing following a bomb blast, Omar’s panic is paramount and he immediately rushes to find Asma. I liked the way he brought her home and seemed apologetic over making her a not-so-great cup of chai– Mein Mrs. Imtiyaaz se puchon ga unhoney kabhi mujhe chai banana kyun nahin sikhayi… In between phone calls to ensure his cover isn’t blown, he manages to locate Mohini- a little bruised but still as delightful as ever.

go

The conversation on the way home was playful and one of the highlights of this episode. I liked the hidden subtext while they were discussing her car- Agar zabaan hoti toh zaroor shikayat karti. Omar feels trapped even though he isn’t bezubaan- yet, he has been conditioned to a life of obedience. On the surface, he has everything, but really, what does a man have if you take away his choice? Our choices make us who we are- right or wrong, they are ours. Omar has dared to choose Mohini for himself- but this is a choice he is afraid of expressing- not just out of fear of  The Undertaker, but the fear of falling short in the eyes of Mohini. He is in awe of her independence, her ambitions, her focus. Omar lacks all three. Ali tries to distract him from his whimsical thoughts and reminds him how highly unlikely their union would be.

Rahat Hashmi and Saleem Sahab are wasting no time with the wedding arrangements. But does Saleem Sahab have something up his sleeve? I was curious to know why he’s in a rush to transfer his business over to Omar and Rahat before the wedding takes place. His admission of his son Junaid being zehni taur pe slow came as a surprise. What is really going on in his mind? It seems Junaid and Omar are more alike than they realize. Hamarey zindagi ke faislay inkay finance managers kartey hein! Zara is not exactly overjoyed at the prospect of being married either- I don’t know if it’s cold feet, but something tells me there’s more to Zara than meets the eye.

safe_image.php

Asma senses that Mohini is falling for Omar but she cautions her to nip it in the bud. Mohini is smart enough to know that her mother is right- she understands that there’s more to a relationship than secretly sneaking out for lunches. As much as she likes Omar, she knows he lives in perpetual fear of his father and this relationship would only complicate his life further. Omar was clearly offended with the rejection but doesn’t let it show on his face- A good dinner should compensate for a spoilt lunch! The highlights of this episode were the scenes between Omar and Mohini- these two are flawless together. I wish we could see more of Ali though. Seeing Zara today, I have high hopes that her character won’t disappoint- fingers crossed. This Nomi guy is worrying me- there are too many complications already, I wouldn’t want another obstacle in the way of Omar and Mohini. While Ali provides the comic relief that is essential in Omar’s life, Mrs. Imtiyaaz helps keep him grounded. Let’s see if they stand by him when he decides to take the plunge and pursue Mohini. Since I watch the episodes online, the lighting remains to be an issue for me. Is anyone else experiencing the same? Or is it meant to be that way? What are your thoughts?

Goya- Episode 20 & 21 Review

Omar finally manned up and told Rahat off for what he did to Mohini. I don’t get why it took Omar this long to figure out that his dad was behind everything. And even if he was struggling with coming to terms with the divorce story, why did he agree to marrying Zara? Yes, Omar was distraught, confused, torn but that still didn’t justify his decision to get married especially when he knew Mohini was carrying his child. Speaking of the child, am I the only one who feels bad that she miscarried? Granted she was being stupid and suicidal but why is no one talking about the loss she suffered and focusing more on Omar?

After seeing his son walk away for the second time, Rahat was a broken man and he finally let Haniya go. So Rahat was left all alone except for Zeb. There is such a huge disconnect in the scenes. I think Zeb has mentioned her mother at least twice if not more in these two episodes and each time she managed to get nothing more than a death stare from Rahat. Seeing that nothing is working, she continues haunting him with her Bengali Jaadu – the khushboos and reminders until he suffers a stroke.

Zara received a much needed reality check after Omar left her- she agreed to this mismatch out if her own free will yet she has turned into a nagging dosri biwi. Why must we reduce women to such desperate and un ambitious roles? Zara had so much more drive even when she was stoned. Maybe she’d be better off puffing her life away instead of chasing after a man who clearly doesn’t want her.

So Mohini has cancer and has made up her mind that she will die alone in Muree. Asma’s parenting skills leave much to be desired- I bet she must be kicking herself for those extensive liberties now. Omar can’t seem to convince her to come to Karachi for treatment but he doesn’t want to give up on her either. In retrospect, I feel both parenting styles depicted here have failed miserably- Rahat suffocated Omar until he drove him away and Asma tried to maintain an extremely casual relationship which ended up making Mohini stubborn beyond reason.

I’m guessing Omar will have to bow down to the great and resourceful Sr. Hashmi to save Mohini’s life just the way Mohini did for Omar. I wish they’d bring back the trend of 13 episode long dramas coz just about every story would appear to be far more gripping if the narrative was reduced to a limited number of episodes.

Goya- Episode 2 Review

For those of you who haven’t caught up yet, let me do you a favour- here’s a quick recap: Goya is the story of a burger bacha, Omar who has spent his entire life in a bubble. He meets Mohini, a bun-kabab, who is a street smart tomboy, independent and not someone you want to mess with. I think our writers need to outgrow the Disney fetish and realize that not every rich guy/ middle-class girl needs to be a caricature. The excessive use of Sir in the rich household vs the casual referral to the mother by name in the middle-class household- we can easily do without these. Must all middle-class girls be tomboys? And what is with the repeated use of the word training? It is demeaning almost like comparing a human being to an animal. Apki training bilkul sahi hai… I was already trained for it… Ab mujhe writer ki demaaghi salaiyaton pe shukk honay laga hai!!!

images3

It’s one thing to want control, it’s another to destroy everyone else’s self-esteem! Sr. Hashmi is struggling with the horrors of his past which is probably why he is the way that he is. Tumney wohh aag nahin dekhi hai jo maine dekhi hai. How does a man with so many resources not bother to seek professional help? With someone having as many trust issues, you’d think he’d be scheduling weekly visits if not daily! Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Omar mention that he was an American Citizen last week? So what’s up with the Green Pakistani Passport? Ali tries to help out his buddy by booking a flight for him- and the travel agent just happens to be part of Sr. Hashmi’s intelligence network. Let me get this straight, Sr. Hashmi doesn’t want his son to leave but he goes ahead and pushes his buttons by belittling him- Mujhe laga ke meray bete ne koi toh mardon wala kaam kiya… Magar nahin!

image4s

So bechara Omar is caught and can’t escape and Mrs. Imtiyaaz has to bear the brunt- she is humiliated by Sr. Hashmi but it doesn’t surprize her- Unkey dil mein hamdardi, izzat aur ehteraam jaisa jazba koi hai hi nahin… Mrs. Hashmi who can’t act to save her life, develops a soft spot for Mrs. Imtiyaaz and tries to explain her crazy husband’s state of mind- Jo itney barey barey faisley demaagh se karte houn wohh dil se kya soch saktey hein… Hain? Who says you can’t be human if you’re running a business! Geez, yet another caricature here- the businessman without a heart. What could’ve been a powerful conversation turned out to be flat thanks to the monotones used by Tara Mahmood- Temporary emotions par permanent decision nahin liye jaatey. For someone talking about emotions, she couldn’t possibly be more void of them. See, now I get how these two have stayed married- both are devoid of emotions and inn tamaam rishton ko jo jazba joray rakhta hai wohh hai paisa!

12

Time for the second chance meeting of our main leads- Mohini is waiting for Asma to get off from work (remember, Asma works in a hotel and Omar’s father owns an office on the top floor?) and Aunn/ Omar decides to confront her:

Omar: Pehley aapney meri insult ki phir character assasination ki TV par, aur kya chahti hein???
Mohini: Iss waqt toh mein sirf yeh chahti houn ke aap meri ammi ko jaldi se chutti dein taakey mein ghar jasakoun…
Omar: Aapki Ammi?
Mohini: Asma Mirza
Omar: Oh, wohh toh kaafi polite aur well-mannered khatoon hain… Age mein bhi apsey kam lagti hain…

index

And after this conversation, the two of them decide to go out for coffee. Mohini helps him dodge his guards and drives him to Tariq Road- that scene was poorly executed with a fake background while Mohini was driving in her khataara car and seeing how Omar was sweating up a storm decided to treat him for gola ganda (snow cones) instead. And this was the premise to consolidate their feelings- Love at First Bite! Omar was over-the-moon having never experienced the wonders of gola ganda before nor the freedom to travel guard-free. After narrating his life changing experience to his bestie, Ali, he decided to quickly take Mohini out for rolls! Yahan bhi naak kataadi hai, Bhai! Larkiyan larkon ko lekar nahin jaati… Gola ganda aur rolls khatey khatey, he shared his views about not wanting to get married young, etc, etc.

Speaking of marriage, Sr. Hashmi is adamant to play matchmaker and invited Saleem & Co over for dinner. So Saleem Sahab has a daughter, Zara and son, Junaid who is perfectly okay with the idea of being trained. Good boy! What I don’t get is why he was trying to patronize his would-be damaad by bringing up Obama ki foreign policies and the hotel business. Inn ko shaadi karani hai ya nahin? And what surprized me even more was how the otherwise haughty Sr. Hashmi didn’t tell him off the way he does to just about everyone else.

Episode 2 and the one thing I can say is that the story is moving along but it has failed to create that WOW factor. I’m definitely enjoying the pairing of OKB and Sana Javed and those few scenes of Ali but that’s about it… It’s an interesting story but there’s just something missing. Maybe next week? And someone, please fix the lighting!

Goya- Episode 19 Review

The big reveal this week was Zeb’s identity. The fact that it didn’t surprise any of us is a different story. Zeb is Rahat’s illegitimate child – Hum adhey, adhurey, jaiz, najaiz, jaise bhi hein, hein toh unki aulaad hi... She wants to be accepted for who she is and let the cat out of the bag with Haniya but soon afterwards, she reverted to playing the keeper of secrets when Rahat questioned her about her past. Apney hairat aur ghussey ko qabu karna seekhiye, issey apki kamzarfi ka ehsaas hota hai…

In Muree, Omar came face-to-face with Asma Mirza who told him that Mohini is torn over his dosri shadi and doesn’t wish to associate with him further. Later on, Sharfu Nana reiterated Asma’s words but softened up seeing Omar’s masoom chehra. However, Mohini seems to be slipping away as her blood reports are a cause for concern. The lapse in continuity was a bit of a bother- when Mohini went to see the doctor it was morning time but when the doctor called Asma, it was dark at night.

Omar needed someone to say the words loud and clear to him for him to realize that he’d been played like a puppet. And Sharfu Nana was the one to deliver the blow. Omar went on to summon Safdar the security guy who succumbed to the pressure within seconds. For someone who’s been Rahat’s right hand man for the longest time, it was extremely unbelievable that he would spill the beans.

Zara is acting out like a child who’s not getting the attention she thinks she deserves. It has suddenly dawned upon her that she is Omar’s wife and she wants to be treated like one. The fact that Rahat is constantly breathing down her neck doesn’t help. Let’s see what happens next.

Goya- Episode 17 Review

Joining the list of men with two wives is *drumroll* Omar Hashmi. Rahat Hashmi managed to neutralize the threat of Mohini and prevented Haniya from escaping from his fortress. The episode started out with a cameo from Aiza- Ali’s girlfriend who was geared up to dance on Second hand jawaani but fortunately we were spared the trauma of watching the wedding festivities take place. Omar, who was certain he would help Haniya get away was helpless once again because Sr. Hashmi was already onto Haniya. Rahat made his intentions crystal clear- when his prefered gynac returns, she will take care of “it”. Aulaad, rizq, zindagi aur maut kisi aur ke haath mein hai… But Rahat considers himself to be invincible. He has succeeded in having everyone exactly where he wants them.

image image

Nomi is back in the picture- he received the wedding invite of Omar and Zara’s wedding and went straight to Mohini with the news. Once again, Asma reminded her that she lost Omar due to her himaqat but Mohini was severely devastated that Omar didn’t know any better. Mohini was confident that even though Sr. Hashmi would have fed him lies, Omar wouldn’t fall for any of them and would come and find her. Nomi was on a mission of his own- he expressed his love for Mohini and wants her to move on especially now that Omar has clearly moved on.

image

image

Instead of travelling the distance to the wedding venue, why couldn’t Mohini simply pick up the phone and talk to Omar? The recurrent theme in this drama has been the very obvious communication gap- Asma could’ve contacted Omar but she didn’t; Mohini had plenty of opportunities to speak to Omar but she kept avoiding them hoping Omar would magically find her; Zeb has been dropping hints with every breath she takes and yet, no one can manage to get a straight answer out of her. Yet, she continues living in the Hashmi household and has sworn allegiance to Rahat Hashmi. She is tasked with the responsibility of spying on Haniya and she has done a splendid job thus far.

image

When Haniya confronted her and called her out for her filmy dialogues, I was hoping we’d finally have her story revealed but instead, we got to hear her rants about those who take things for granted. It’s almost like everyone knows Zeb’s real identity but prefer to sweep it under the rug. Omar’s rebellion didn’t reap any results and neither did Haniya’s so Rahat continues his reign of terror. Now that Omar has married Zara, Rahat is a happy man and is more open to dialogue. All Omar really wants is to distance himself from his father and for that, he decides to resume work.

image image

The preview for the next episode reveals Zara is becoming impatient with Omar as she feels she wants more from her marriage. Rahat continues his games of manipulation and I think it’s high time he reaps what he has sowed.

Goya- Episode 16 Review

Do adad marey huwey logon ki shaadi par bhi armaan hai ke ubhar ubhar ke bahar arahey hein… Omar and Zara succumbed to the powers that be and decided that they couldn’t continue retaliating and for the sake of their sanity, they jointly agreed to the marriage. Both of them see it as a marriage of convenience here they support each other as friends and in turn gain freedom from being micromanaged by their parents.

 image

Zara had yet another meltdown- she is finding it very hard to cope with Adnan’s death. Her mother offers little comfort- she’s just in a hurry to marry her off so she can be free from the torture of putting up with her relapses. Zara was neglected as a child and grew up in a volatile environment where her parents were constantly at loggerheads and her father was busy womanizing. I think it’s easy to see why she not only detests the idea of marriage but wants to escape from the hellhole that is her home.

image

Omar’s plight is no different. He was never allowed to grow as an individual since his father controlled every breath he took. As much as Omar would like to believe otherwise, he’s distraught over Mohini’s disappearance and silence and he can’t help but wonder if there is an ounce of truth to what Rahat is saying. Rahat hands him the khula papers- Mere naam ki saath jee toh nahin saki lekin marey gi zaroor…

image

Haniya is fully aware that Rahat is growing increasingly suspicious of her so she tries to get Omar to help her run away. She’s afraid for her life and that of her unborn child. I have a feeling the Doctor friend helping her out will suffer the same fate as those that dared to cross Sr. Hashmi. I think Rahat has a pretty good idea that Haniya is pregnant but he doesn’t want to take any chances and wants to get some tests done before he can decide what he needs to do next.

image

The highlight of today’s episode was Ali’s return and revelation that it was indeed Sr. Hashmi who forced both Ali and his father to relocate to Dubai. I like how he always manages to lighten the mood in an otherwise grim story.  I laughed when he called Zara filmi aurat. Mohini was MIA today and I hope she’s managed to pick herself up and working to improve her life. I would love for her to return before this wedding takes place because the last thing I want to see is a situation involving a dosri shadi even if Zara has agreed to exit the scene once Mohini returns.

image

The brief scene of Zeb was a relief although she knows Haniya is planning something. Will she tattle once again or will she keep her mouth shut remains to be seen. The wedding preps are in full swing and both parties want pomp and circumstance. Haniya is planning her escape on the night of Omar’s Valima but Rahat already has his Head of Security following her and reporting back. Let’s see how this ends!

Goya- Episode 14 Review

Every once in a while you come across a character in a drama that you admire so much simply because he/ she is human. Such is the case with not just one but at least two characters in Goya, if not more. It didn’t take very like for Omar to realize that he was being played- his miraculous ability to walk so soon after a spinal cord surgery reaffirmed his fear that Mohini didn’t leave out of her own free will but was coerced into doing so. What I have liked about Omar from the very beginning is his manners- how often do you come across a man in our dramas who never loses sight of his adab and aap/ janaabs despite his circumstances. Here’s a guy who’s life is a living hell thanks to his controlling father yet every one he comes across is extended the same courtesy- be it the house help, visitors, etc.

image

Zeb’s confidence is growing leaps and bounds- Hamaari maa ne humein darna nahin sikaya tha… Zeb is currently working as the house help but that doesn’t diminish her personality in the least. Having completed her Master’s Degree, she is not only qualified but entitled to a white collar job but she doesn’t let that affect her. On the contrary, she is helping Omar come to terms with the reality surrounding him. Though Omar was initially reluctant to even speak to her since she reminded me of the irreplaceable Mrs. Imtiyaaz, he is slowly learning to open up to her. She seems sensible and sincere; plus she also seems confident when dealing with the formidable Sr. Hashmi.

image

I was extremely annoyed with Nomi- he’s acting cold and nasty knowing full well that Omar is not to blame. As Omar reminds him, Mein toh behosh tha Nomi… He seemed indifferent when he heard about Mohini’s miscarriage- I expected him to have more of a reaction than a blank expression. I don’t know if Nomi has a bigger role to play but I hope he doesn’t come in between Mohini and Omar. God knows they need all the help they can get.

image

Zara and Omar are definitely on the same wavelength. Their shared experiences have helped them understand and support each other better. Zara has finally understood that the only way to get her parents to back off is to convince them that she and Omar are trying to sort through their love lives and develop an understanding which will take time and requested her mother not to rush them into a marriage. For now, her parents are on board with the waiting but I’m sure Rahat Hashmi will not take it at face value. Zara lets on to Omar that the last time she spoke with Adnan, he seemed different. She mentions that someone was in his apartment- was he hallucinating or was it a hit-man hired by the unforgiving Sr. Hashmi? I think the two of them will be able to connect the dots soon and figure out what really happened to Adnan.

image

Motherhood changes a woman- Haaniya is trying to free herself of her business commitments and plans on winding up her business. Haaniya tried to bring up the subject of another heir to the Hashmi empire but seeing Rahat’s reaction, she wants to run away for the sake of her unborn child. Her doctor friend is afraid for his own safety and advised her to stop consulting him and made arrangements for her to travel and stay at his Vancouver home. Somehow, I get the feeling of impending doom- I think Rahat is on to Haniya- she won’t be able to hide her pregnancy from him for much longer and when he finds out, he will almost certainly expect her to abort the child.

 image

Mohini is still unable to get back on her feet although she holds on to the belief that once Omar is better, he will come and find her. I like how Asma has stood by her throughout her dilemma and even now, she is supporting Mohini’s decision to stay disconnected from Omar. There was a bit of comic relief when Asma went to interview for a job with Shadab Zuberi. Let’s see if there’s more on that front in the coming episodes.

Goya- Episode 13 Review

Omar awakens from his beauty sleep without any visible scars but his emotional wounds will take time to heal. He’s back in the home he left vowing to never return and the fact that he’s supposedly paralyzed (or so Rahat Hashmi would have him believe) only adds to his helplessness. He’s not falling for Rahat’s sincerity act- but he does second-guess himself. Mohini and Mrs. Mirza vanished into thin air- did the great and powerful Rahat Hashmi do the unthinkable? Well, with Rahat Hashmi, nothing is impossible- unki koi haisiyat nahin thi ke mein unke saath koi karawayi karta…

image image

Meanwhile, Mohini and Mrs. Mirza have relocated to Muree with Sharfu Nana- even though Sharfu Nana is Asma’s Naani’s brother, he’s their only living relative (?) and is committed to taking care of them. Mohini is quickly sinking into depression so much so that she contemplates suicide- unfortunately, she has a miscarriage and the last glimmer of hope she had of ever reuniting with Omar is no more. Mohini and Asma lost everything they ever owned and though Asma tries to convince Mohini to return, Mohini has simply lost the will to live.

image image

Zara is back in town after having a complete recovery in rehab and her parents are eager to get her married off to Omar. I liked how Zara wasn’t ashamed of herself- she knew she had a problem and she knew she had to deal with it instead of living in denial. Her parents are quick to point fingers at her but refuse to share the blame.

image

Haniya is holding on to some test results and it appears that she may be pregnant. Instead of rejoicing with the news, she shares her concerns with a family friend- Dr. Nisar that Rahat never wanted anymore children. I’m beginning to wonder if Zeb is his daughter- the timelines are kind of confusing. Rahat left Chittagong in 1971 as was repeatedly mentioned. Assuming Zeb was born sometime around then, she would be well in her 40s by now. His waris Omar is about 26 and he’s supposedly going to become a father again… Something just doesn’t seem right. For a man who thrives on control, it’s hard to believe that he hasn’t tossed Zeb out- she came right out and mentioned a certain someone who begged him to stay. Whoever she is, she knows something about him that he has concealed from everyone else. Why would he allow someone like that to remain living in his home when she could potentially send his life in jeopardy? How are the two of them connected?

image image

Today’s episode was high on emotions and once again, Sana Javed was phenomenal. OKB is a fine actor and his fear coupled with concern was spot on; I am liking the toned down Farah Shah very much and even Tara Mahmood is growing on me- she’s a nicely written character with a heart of gold. Usman Peerzada has been fabulous as Rahat Hashmi and I can’t wait to watch his downfall. Let’s see what’s in store for us next week. Iss se ziada kya bura hoga???

Goya- Episode 12 Review

Itney barey admi hokay kitni choti baat ki aapney… Mein Omar ki zindagi ke badley aaj apki zindagi bakhshti houn aur aapko maaf karti houn… Mein apni zindagi ka sabse bara sauda kar rahi houn… Rahat is gloating over Mohini’s misfortune and rejoicing in his victory. While Haniya tries to empathize with Mohini and express her dismay over Rahat’s win, Zeb thinks Sr. Hashmi has lost big time. Haniya has more or less established that Zeb knew Rahat but Zeb is in no hurry to reveal the intricate details of her history. Rahat goes on the defense whenever Haniya brings up his past and that only reaffirms her thinking that Zeb and him share a deeper connection. I think it’s only a matter of time before Haniya realizes that she can’t continue living with a self-centered prick.

image image

Having lost all hope in her capacity to provide for Omar’s treatment due to her depleted resources, Mohini walks away from Omar’s life with a promise to Rahat Hashmi but refuses to a divorce. Sharfu Nana (Qazi Wajid) made his appearance today and the ladies- Asma and Mohini are moving away with him. I liked how he didn’t judge either of the two but instead, stood by their decision and comforted them in their time of need. Asma has done above and beyond what any single mother could do and Mohini is struggling with guilt of being a burden on her instead of taking care of her as she had wanted all along.

image image

Nomi has been a true friend who didn’t think twice about arranging financial help for Mohini hoping Omar would be on the road to recovery. Mohini felt crippled with the news of Omar’s long-term needs and it just goes to show how Rahat banked on his power and connections to get exactly what he wanted. I’m sure Rahat will not spare the melodrama once Omar regains consciousness and ensure he poisons Omar against Mohini so much so that Omar ends up becoming his puppet again.

image

Sana Javed has been exceptional as Mohini and I’m really loving her in a lead role; Usman Peerzada makes me hate him a little more every week- such a fine actor really; Farah Shah is doing well now with her controlled performance; OKB has been very impressive thus far and I’m hoping he can maintain his brilliance till the very end. I’m glad the story continues to progress at a steady pace- I’m looking forward to seeing how Omar takes the news of Mohini’s exit.

Goya- Episode 11 Review

Rahat-my-way-or-the-highway– Hashmi is finally seeing his plan come to life. With Mohini and Asma struggling to pay for Omar’s treatment, Rahat knows it’s only a matter of time before they will be left with nothing and turn to him for help. Rahat is at ease with the knowledge that Oman is fine but he is milking it to ensure Omar’s ultimate return. He even feigns concern – Tumhare saath raha toh zinda nahin bache ga… Wohh tamaan khushiyan jo Omar se tumney cheenli hain, wohh ussey milein gein… Rahat puts forth his conditions to save Omar’s life- Mohini must leave him so Omar can have his life back. Not one for emotions, he couldn’t care less for what becomes of Mohini or all that she has sacrificed for his son thus far.

image

Haniya is getting sick of Rahat’s perpetual temper tantrums- Pata nahin kab mujhe iss admi ki samajh ayegi… She is constantly humiliated by Rahat who reminds her to live within his stipulated rules. I wish for the sake of her dignity and sanity, she leaves this egomaniac and never comes back! Haniya tries to help Mohini out of hamdardi and insaniyat- words that are completely missing in Rahat’s dictionary. Her efforts are in vain when Rahat discovers she is trying to help with the finances to ensure Omar recovers.

image

Amongst the many emotional scenes, the one that had the strongest impact was where Mohini expresses her dismay to Nomi- Wohh meri sunta hai; mein bolti toh wohh theek hojaata! I really missed Omar today. Those few glimpses of him were a painful reminder of what’s to come. Nomi will be the anchor in Mohini’s life once she strikes the deal with the devil- I wouldn’t be surprized if Rahat suggests Mohini aborts her child! Technically speaking, a divorce can’t take place until the child is born and I’m not too sure Rahat will want to wait any further. He has to take care of pending transactions with Saleem Sahab.

image

The mystery surrounding Zeb is building with each passing episode- Rahat’s surprise at finding out she has a Masters degree from the University of Chittagong and Haniya’s almost acceptance that she shares a past with Rahat. Jab tak insaan apney past se dosti nahin karley, wohh kabhi khush nahin rehta… Will this man ever make peace with his past? A past that’s obviously dark and one that’s he’s kept from the rest of the world?

image

Overall, this was a much slower episode in comparison to the previous ones. The preview for next week suggests we’ll be seeing more of the same- majbooriyan until finally Mohini breaks and gives in. It will be easy for Rahat to manipulate Omar by playing the saviour- I hope Omar knows better than to believe that there is an ounce of good in his father. What did you think of Rahat’s deal? Did anyone else think it played down in a similar way to the scene from Dil where Hazari Prasad strikes a similar deal with Madhu?

Goya- Episode 10 Review

0

Adnan’s exit was just as swift as his entry- it took me by surprize but I think the timing was just right. In a matter of a few episodes, Adnan left his mark. Full points to Gohar Rasheed for portraying the role of Adnan with such finesse. His death remains a mystery at the moment but it was reason enough to shatter Omar’s world. Mujhe bilkul akela kar rahein hain wohh… Ab mujhse meri family bhi cheeni jayegei… I think Omar fears that his father is capable of just about any and everything. But then again, Omar has lived under his father’s shadow for his entire life until just recently when he decided to walk away. However, I can’t seem to forget Adnan’s last words- Power ke nashay mein insaan yeh bhool jata hai ke there’s always someone sitting above… Rahat continues to gloat with the notion of his invincibility- afterall, there have been far too many coincidences that have worked in his favour. And those coincidences are reason enough for Omar to worry for the lives of his family- Mohini, Asma and his unborn child.

 image

Omar’s paranoia makes him want to run away further- he wants to move to America and expects it will happen in the blink of an eye. When Mohini doesn’t share his concerns, he feels helpless and finds himself walking the streets like a vagabond. He senses he is being followed and in a moment of panic, ends up being the victim of a car accident after nearly escaping just moments earlier. Rahat Hashmi knows how to take full advantage of a situation and manages to get the Doctor to do his bidding. The minor accident that required nothing more than a few stitches is now presented to be a serious condition that will require spinal cord decompression and extensive surgery and the recovery will be over a period of months. Mohini, who has been feeling pangs of guilt over Omar’s ghareebo wali halat is convinced her qismat or lack thereof is the root of all of Omar’s problems.

image

At such times, any rational person would think to consider going for a second opinion but Mohini is in no condition to think clearly. One after another, there have been hiccups in their marriage and now that she is expecting her first child, her fears are slowly creeping in. Rahat is planning Omar’s return- he has managed to isolate Omar and destroy his support system and has tortured him with his taaney to ensure Omar loses his ground. Rahat feels he in entitled to complete control over Omar since he is his only son- Zeb’s reaction to his statement hints that there is a connection between the two. I would really like to see how Zeb rocks his boat- the bigger they are, the harder they fall!

image

Once again, a big shout out to Osman Khalid Butt and Sana Javed for their effortless acting- I’m rooting for you #OmarAndMohini. Usman Peerzada is such a brilliant actor he makes you hate Rahat to the core. But if I were to pick and choose what I’m loving most about the drama, I’d say it has to be the writing- hats off to Mohammad Ahmed and team for bringing forward a fresh script, some witty dialogues and most of all, thank you for keeping us glued!

Goya- Episode 1 Review

0

And finally- the much awaited drama by ARY, written by Mohammed Ahmed, produced by Six Sigma and directed by Farrukh Faiz, Goya is here! Go do something constructive- you’re wasting my time and your time! Welcome to the world of Rahat Hashmi (Usman Peerzada)- successful businessman, public figure, jo hamesha ya toh kuch baich rahein hotay hein ya phir kuch khareed rahey hotey hain. A man who thrives on control to the extent that he has conditioned his only son, Omar aka Jr. Hashmi (Osman Khalid Butt) into responding in the following three ways- Yes Sir, Okay Sir, Sorry Sir. Omar, who routinely graces the covers of various magazines is one of the most sought after bachelors in town simply by virtue of birth. But his feelings aren’t that of any stereotypical ameerzaada– on the contrary, he feels suffocated with the burden of being a public figure. Omar’s only outlet is his buddy Ali (Furqan Qureshi) and Mrs. Imtiyaaz (Shamin Hilali) who is tasked with the responsibility of carrying out the orders given by the Sr. Hashmi. Rahat has married a second time to Tara Mehmood but so far she hasn’t shown any inclination towards being a riwaayati soteli maa. In fact, she seems to be the voice of reason and reminds her husband azaadi bhi koi cheez hoti hai.

images (1)

Rahat strongly believes that he has done right by his son by keeping him in a controlled environment and safeguarding him from the ayaashiyan that are common of the rich and famous. He has chosen a suitable match for his son- the daughter of his friend Saleem. He is confident that his son won’t refuse him to which his wife questions- Aaap ne apney bete ko inkaar ka haq diya hai? Omar wants to go to the USA and pursue an MBA but is predictably shot down by his father- jo students bahar parhney kaatey hein wohh uss position ke liye jaatey hein jis position pe tum already ho! In his eyes, Omar needs to settle down although seeing how his mind works, I’m certain there’s more to this match than meets the eye. Knowing full well that his father won’t take no for an answer, Omar does what any rational 20something would do- plan an escape!

We are also introduced to a mother-daughter duo of Asma (Farah Shah) and Mohini (Sana Javed). These two share an impossibly casual relationship so much so that Mohini often refers to her mother as Asma. Mohini is a news reporter and seems to be the mature one out of the two while Asma is a drama queen with a filmy fascination. Some of their conversations circled around finding a suitable match for Mohini- a man who would double as a handyman. It seems like these two women have been living on their own but fortunately there’s no melodrama here- not just yet. Both these women are independent and self-sufficient. They work respectable jobs to make a decent living and are a huge contrast to the father-son relationship shared by the Sr and Jr Hashmi.

images (2)

How do two people who are poles apart cross paths? Well, as luck would have it, Omar happens to be at an art exhibition where Mohini is covering the event. In their brief encounter, Mohini is seen as a strong, confident woman whereas Omar appears to be socially awkward. Will this turn into love at first fight? Who knows? But we do get a glimpse into a growing attraction- Omar shares as much with Ali after he meets the annoying Ayeza. Does anyone know the name of the actress? I hope we really, really, really don’t get to see anymore of her.

Some of the scenes that stood out were the ones with Omar and Ali- be it their man-to-man way of settling an argument by resorting to rock-paper-scissors or Ali’s sincere advise to Omar- Tu khudkhushi karley bhai- apni mari hui machli jaisa moun lekar please mere paas mat aana. Even the scene of those two referring to Sr Hashmi as Undertaker while playing a WWF game was amusing. Other than that, some witty one liners by Mohini like Raam Leela ki Amma reminded me of her role as Lubna in Pyarey Afzal. As far as the actors go, I felt Farah Shah was a bit OTT. I wasn’t particularly fond of Hina Tareen either. But the rest of the cast more than made up for the shortcomings. Osman Khalid Butt was amazing as Omar; Sana Javed has yet again nailed the role given to her; Usman Peerzaada – naam hi kaafi hai; Furqan Qureshi is another one to watch out for- he makes his presence felt everytime and Shamin Hilali was spot on as Mrs. Imtiyaz. However, I couldn’t help shake this movie feel- maybe the print had something to do with it? Another rant- for someone as high and mighty as Rahat Hashmi, his home was a huge letdown. Budget interior designer anyone? For a first episode, it was intriguing but definitely didn’t make me go- Wow! Isn’t it mind-blowing? What about you? What did you think? Yay or Meh?

Goya- Episode 22 & 23 Review (Last Episode)

I hate sounding redundant but Ary is desperately in need of a makeover. The channel continues producing sub par serials and the time changes don’t seem to work in their favour. Joining their list of serials that are ruined by their lack of consistency is Goya- a drama that actually got off to a pretty decent start. From the beginning, I struggled with the lighting and sound quality- the issue was never fully resolved. For me, production values are extremely important- if I don’t like what I see, I tend to lose interest quickly. I wish producers would take some time to look into the superior standards maintained by Hum TV. They may not churn out hit after hit but Hum continues to keep the audience engaged with their visuals.

23 weeks ago, Goya started out as a serial that dared to be different. For a change, the male protagonist was not your typical macho man with women falling over him like flies. He was quite the opposite- a 20 something struggling with finding his identity while trying to breathe under the constant scrutiny of his father. The female protagonist was not the usual damsel in distress- she was a young woman with her feet firmly on the ground who had accomplished her dream of pursuing a career in journalism. She was raised by a single mom but that never restricted either of them from holding their own. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Mohini changed Omar’s life and in fact she had a big hand in his grooming too. Here was a man who never made an independent decision in his life and he needed the right nudge to keep moving forward. Mohini’s strength became his strength and he decided he wouldn’t let anything get in the way. Despite their ups and downs, these two lovebirds continued to bloom and were on their way to expecting their first child. But life isn’t a bed of roses and Sr. Hashmi decided it was time to bring back Omar in any way that he could. Money corrupts the best of us and all he needed was to find the kind of people who would bend to his will. He succeeded in tearing Omar and Mohini apart. But that’s when things stopped making sense. Mohini fell into a well of self- pity and Omar gave in to a dosri shadi. His second wife started behaving very much like any cliched dosri biwi with a competitive streak. As if we didn’t have enough on our plates already, we had to deal with Sr. Hashmi’s illegitimate Bengali daughter who pretended to be the househelp.

Bad things happen to good people and Mohini became the victim of a terminal illness. Instead of dealing with her cancer, she made up her mind that her life wasn’t worth living and no one could do a thing to convince her otherwise. Just as quickly as Omar rushed into his second marriage, he jumped out of it washing his hands off all responsibility. There were many sub plots within the main plot that could’ve become more than what they were. Zara and Adnan’s story had plenty of potential but it was nipped in the bud. Ali’s character was wasted. The mystery surrounding Nomi remained a mystery. Zeb continued her paheliyan till the last episode- her kahani took forever to disclose and by the time they finally revealed it, it no longer mattered. Yet, in the very last episode, she had another conversation with Zara that hinted at a possible ” there’s still more to come”.

Every time I watch a serial that ends in tragedy I can’t help but wonder why. At what point did the story become focused on “Mohini Must Die”? The last few episodes were high on drama and ensured both Osman Khalid Butt and Sana Javed carved a niche for themselves. Even though Sr. Hashmi seemed genuine, I feel he didn’t get his due- this man deserved far worse than a mere stroke. Asma’s parenting was an epic fail- whatever got into her? For an independent, single mom, she literally watched her daughter die without managing to convince her to at least put up a fight. I would’ve loved to see a positive message arising from a tragedy- death is inevitable but how we deal with it is in our control.

The dialogues were definitely the highlight for me- deep and profound yet easy going and relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed the earlier episodes with Adnan and Ali and their little exchanges with Omar. The drama had a youthful vibe and dialogues that resonated with the audience. For me, the turning point was Omar’s dosri shadi– I had a hard time accepting how he succumbed to pressure knowing full well that Mohini (especially at the time when she was carrying his child) would disappear without reason. With so many dramas dealing with multiple wives, Goya was certainly not one I expected would turn that way. Some highs, some lows but Goya managed to stand out for some fine performances despite the forces that were against them (loud background score, poor lighting and disappointingly low production values). It’s almost unfair to the people who invest their time and efforts- the writers, the actors, the crew members because they have no control over technical difficulties. Ary and Six Sigma really need to go back to the drawing board and do an overhaul. They can’t continue to sabotage any more creative endeavours .

Goya – Episode 15 Review

Ghurbat jo hai wohh insaan se uski confidence cheen leti hai… With each passing episode, we are inching a little closer to Rahat’s past- Zeb let on some gruesome details about how Sr. Hashmi’s family ko zinda jala diya tha and something awful happening to his sisters that was far too cruel to narrate in words. I think Zeb must’ve mentioned her mother countless times since she arrived but no one seems to bother to ask the obvious- how does Zeb’s mother know such intimate details of Rahat Hashmi’s past? This episode seemed very random in contrast to the previous ones. There is still an air of mystery lingering on but I’m afraid if this keeps up for much longer, it won’t have the same impact on the viewers as it did in the initial episodes. I can’t imagine how frustrating it may be for the drama writers to comply with the requirements of stretching a story for a number of episodes because the channel demands it- ARY is doing that again with Goya. Will they never learn???

image

This episode just didn’t resonate like any of its predecessors. After last week, I was happy with how real the characters seemed. But this week, the characters seemed to be just as clueless as the audience. I was disappointed that Omar didn’t seem to react hearing about his father’s past- maut se bilkul nahin dartey aur zindagi se unko koi gharz nahin hai… Is this the same Omar who reacts to any and everyone around him; who genuinely cares for people? How did he suddenly develop such a cold exterior? Granted, he is feeling suffocated by his father and losing patience with the games Sr. Hashmi seems to enjoy playing, still, I would’ve liked to see some streak of empathy for a fellow human being.

image

Oh, another thing I don’t get- Why are we still discussing Adnan? I really liked his character and I really liked the way his exit was unexpected but taking us back to flashbacks about him and focusing on Zara’s addiction is steering the story completely away from the main protagonists. Mohini’s role is reduced to one of a supporting actor. Whatever happened to the strong, independent go-getter? Why are we seeing a woman who’s given up on life and willing to spend her days reminiscing the good times instead of taking control of her life? Omar has all the answers- he knows his father is responsible for this situation. Until last week, Zara was certain Mohini couldn’t possibly run away and this week Zara is expressing her doubts over Mohini’s intentions.

image

Once again, Rahat’s interactions with Zeb are beyond me. Here’s a man who’s obsessed with controlling people and he somehow can’t even seem to get a straight answer out of Zeb- his house-help! Miss-Know-It-All parades all over his study and drops hint after hint of his past and such and he just freezes and remains in a stupor until their next interaction. Seems like Haniya is finally feeling empowered- does her baby have something to do with it or is the influence of the bold and outspoken house-help? Rahat seems to be struggling with the women in his life! And here I thought Karachi mein hawa bhi inki marzi se chalti hai…

image

Nomi’s mysterious disappearance reaffirms that he’s probably given in to his dark side and was somehow a part of Sr. Hashmi’s plan- #BringBackMyOmar. I hope he’s not going to start another killing spree #MohiniMustDie. I don’t know if there are any more twists remaining but for now, I really wish we could get back to seeing Omar and Mohini and how they take charge of their lives under such circumstances.

P.S. I don’t know about Omar and Mohini but Asma may just find her happy ending…

Govt Of Pakistan Issues Notification Allowing Bollywood Films To Release

0

The four months long ban on Bollywood films, and endless speculations, is finally coming to an end as the Government of Pakistan formally allows the release of Bollywood movies in the country. It was previously reported that Hritik Roshan’s Kaabil will release on January 27, but the release was yet again hailed due to unannounced issues.

The official notification, issued by the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage on Tuesday night, announces the continuation of ‘the existing open policy to display all international movies (including Indian films) in Pakistani cinemas’.

Films like Kaabil, Mahira Khan’s Raees and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil are expected to hit the cinemas soon. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which originally came out on October 28, 2016, has been submitted to Censor board after three months due to political tension between Pakistan and India.

Akshay Kumar’s Houseful which released earlier last year is currently shown in Pakistani cinemas and Raees and Kaabil are set to release on February 3.

Sunita Ahuja

Sunita Ahuja was born as Sunita Munjal in June 1967 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Her father is a Punjabi while her mother is Nepali. She has two siblings, an elder sister and a brother. Her sister is married to Govinda’s maternal uncle, Anand Singh, who was a filmmaker. She is 53 years old now.

The Frolicsome Personality

The couple tied their knots on March 11, 1987 and kept the marriage a secret in a fear that it might threaten his female fan following. They revealed their marriage after the birth of their daughter Tina. They have two children, Tina Ahuja and Yashvardhan Ahuja.

Their marriage hit a low when the rumors arose about Rani Mukherjee and Govinda, for having an affair, in 2000. In 2018, Sunita revealed in an interview that her family had cut all the ties with Krushna Abhishek and his wife. She said, “Krushna’s claim to fame has always been the fact that he is Govinda’s bhanja. He has milked that enough. It’s a shame that they talk rubbish about us behind our back”.

Ali Zafar and Meesah Shafi’s harassment controversy is known to all. It all started with a tweet from Meesha’s handle and later the beef made headlines all over the world. The legal battle has apparently come to an end as the Governor has rejected Meesha’s case on technical grounds.

Governor Dismisses Meesha's Case Against Ali Zafar!

Meesha filed a complaint with the Governor of Punjab under  Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010. But she was not working under any contract at the time the said harassment happened which made the act non-applicable. Consequently, her case was dismissed.

Ali’s fans are happy for him after the development but at the same time, many people are confused and furious with the technicalities of the law system.

Meesha’s legal team will, however, take the case elsewhere now and will appeal on another forum to get justice!
