Talking about violence in marriage, Faryal Gohar said, “Eighty percent of women in Pakistan are facing violence in marriages. It is even common among educated, independent women. There are big names who have faced violence against women. I won’t name big names. A big name in the country used to have bruises on her body, and she used to cover them during her press conferences through makeup. Those who know must have understood it. I have faced violence in childhood, about which I won’t tell here. I bore violence in my own marriage. I don’t know why. I wasn’t even dependent; the family was behind you, but the real question is, was my family really behind me? There is prejudice in every family. There are pressures to stay in the marriage despite domestic abuse, along with an added pressure of giving birth to children. How can one give birth to a child when you have been beaten by leather belts every now and then, which caused miscarriages? I bore everything. I don’t want to go into details. Your show will be a mourning show instead of a morning show. The main thing is getting out of such situations after realizing you deserve better. We need our men to be trained.”
She further added, “I was 23 when I got married. It was my choice. My family was happy that he was Syed. Later, our family admitted, how can he be Syed if he beats his wife? I had to conceal my bruises. I used to miss my classes because of my injuries. My kidneys used to pain. I had surgeries, but the thing that was upsetting for me was the prejudice and regressive culture in which I was in. I had to wear my mother-in-law’s shuttlecock burqa to cover me up. Violence is another thing, I couldn’t even go for a walk. I wasn’t allowed to leave the house. I used to travel in a rickshaw, which was also covered so that nobody could see me. Talking about it, Faryal Gohar said, “When I got married, I went to Quetta in a veil with Jamal. Once you get married, you make many compromises in love, and besides this, I am a person who respects cultural norms. I have beautiful relationships with my ex in-laws — they still message me daily. In Quetta, my in-laws made me wear my mother-in-law’s veil, which I did, although she was short and I was tall. I wore it anyway, and that veil barely showed even one eye. Before marriage, I was a very modern girl who used to wear mini skirts because I was from Montreal.”
She further admitted that Jamal Shah was disorganized and that there were several other reasons behind their divorce which she could not share publicly, as he is now married and has children. Speaking about why she fell in love, Faryal confessed that she initially liked Jamal Shah’s dimples but later realized that looks alone are not enough to sustain a marriage.
When asked about working on television and dealing with her conservative in-laws, Faryal shared, “I did a few long plays initially— one was written by Jamal, one by Qasim Jalali, and another by your father. After my acting work aired, it became a big issue, and they came to us saying it was a big sin. They even brought a jirga. Jamal Shah ran away at that time. They told me I had made a big mistake. I told them to first ask Jamal Shah, and then I explained that my own parents and families had differences too, but they still accepted each other.”
She continued, “I told them that our parents came from different backgrounds. When my father took my mother to his family, she was wearing a sleeveless blouse. My phupos, who knew my mom from college, covered her with a shawl. But my grandfather said, ‘Why are you doing that? She will remain the same — she won’t change for us.’ He told everyone, ‘She is our daughter-in-law,’ and even arranged a horse cart, asking my father to take her to the city and let people know she’s our daughter-in-law. I am here to talk about challenges faced by people. I was offered by many, but I didn’t avail the opportunity of speaking the truth.”
She further added, “I have spoken about the domestic violence that happened to me at the UN’s General Assembly. If you were not there, you didn’t have a screen; that doesn’t mean I haven’t talked about it. Were they my best friends to have missed an important detail of my life? It’s not the first time I talked about it. Yes, it wasn’t there in front of the public eye.”
She also said, “Yes, I got bitten by a dog at a very famous personality’s house where I had an interview; the man was there with me. They had Alsatian dogs. My miscarriage happened due to tetanus injections. The time I told was another pregnancy. At that time, this man was involved with other women. He wasn’t available, and it would be a big bombshell. I will reveal the name of that woman, who is very popular as well.”
She also added, “Yes, there were good things about Jamal too, but there was betrayal too. It was harder than love. He’s a talented man. I haven’t seen that intelligent man, but painful things were there. He said he wasn’t marriage material, but isn’t he now married?” She said this while mimicking his style.
She added that she has learnt her lessons and there is no bitterness regarding Jamal Shah now. She quoted Princess Diana, “There were three of us in the marriage.” I will say there were many in the marriage. I think lack of respect, knowledge, and many things caused the breakup.”
She further said that she has always been an admirer of his work, his talent, and there has been a whole gallery of his art pieces at her Zaman Park residence, and one he even gifted to her after marriage, saying he misses her or feels incomplete without her. Jamal Shah also shared the final straw which broke the back of their relationship. He was trying to open an art institute in Islamabad with a lady. Faryal advised him to not work with her but he did not listen. Even that lady’s aunt advised him to stay away from her but he did what he wanted to do and the project did not go well. That is when Faryal and Jamal finally divorced too, though they were having problems in their marriage since 1987.
