The ‘Bay’ Syndrome!

The ‘Bay’ Syndrome; a syndrome which compels its victims to imagine & pen down such characters that embody all the characteristics that begin with ‘bay’, examples include ‘bay’ghairat, ‘bay’sharam, ‘bay’shaoor, ‘bay’haya, ‘bay’tukkay, ‘bay’charay so on & so forth.

Surprise surprise, I am writing about the latest trends that our writers have started & the bandwagon of writing the ‘bay’ghairati filled dramas that our writers have hopped on & for that reason, I most certainly believe that most of our writers are down with ‘the ‘bay’ syndrome’ because other than that, there’s no justification to the idiocy that our writers are churning out, one after another. Gone are the days when our writers used to feel the pressure & found it as their moral & ethical duty to pen down such scripts that had some purpose. Gone are the days when our writers used to write such stories that actually contained a message that they felt that needed to be conveyed. Gone are the days when the writers took their job seriously & actually considered what the viewers would want to see & gone are the days when the definition of entertainment was entirely different & definitely better!

These days, it seems like our writers have gotten a wrong idea of what qualifies as an entertainment. Ages ago our writers stopped experimenting with different genres & shoved saas bahu sagas down our throats time & again. It was so obvious that our writers clearly ran out of ideas so they gave a different spin to the stories of domestic issues which were more or less the same. The masses still showed acceptance towards such dramas because they had no other option than to tune to what was being shown but seems like the writers stopped taking their work seriously & came up with a hideous idea of twisting the logic & concepts of Divorce & when they felt that this idea was getting old & rusty, they took their fixation a step further & started exploring (read exploiting) the concept of Halala too!

A few years ago, channels like HUM TV & ARY Digital actually brought back people to Pakistani dramas & made them forget the never-ending hideous dramas of Star Plus which had everything except good stories. We Pakistanis, used to take pride in our Pakistani dramas because we knew that our dramas were completely different & had a meaning but sadly, that is not the case anymore. From the last 3 – 4 years, the quality of our dramas has only deteriorated because it is so obvious that all the toms, dicks & harry’s think they can become a writer & they end up writing down the most idiotic scripts that leave the viewers baffled & furious at their audacity for coming up with such level of ‘bay’ghairti.

FotorCreated

There was a time when all our writers were fixated with the sister rivalry & we got so many photocopies of same idea as the writers thought that this is what was going to sell their scripts. After that came a trend in our dramas where everyone got married to the one they were not in love with & planned on eloping with their beloved from the past. Then came a trend of such dramas where each & every female lead was being accused of infidelity. Then came the most amazing trend of ‘dusri biwi’ which some writers once again took a notch higher & threw in 3 – 4 biwis too. I am talking about these trends because they show the lack of creativity that our writers suffer from, where they take it as their duty to follow the lead of those dramas that might do a good job rating wise & this is the reason why we see so many copies of one idea for a certain amount of time.

I am sure by now you guys must’ve understood where I am going with this. Yes, I am talking about the trend that has compelled the writers to play with the concepts of Divorces & Halalas because of which we are seeing so many photocopies of this sickening idea & honestly speaking, I am actually unable to figure out what makes these so-called writers think they can write such pathetic scripts & get away with it? Are they so rating-hungry that they find it totally cool to play with such concepts so brutally? Since our writers have even taught the kids about what divorce is, I am sure when asked, the kids will also say that a divorce means no turning back but here we are, getting to see such dramas where divorce is treated as a cancelled meeting where the involved party tries to arrange a meeting again while completely forgetting about what had transpired between them already. These days in our dramas written by the writers that are down with the ‘bay’ syndrome, we are shown that after getting divorced, the wife tries to go back to her husband citing kids as an excuse conveniently. If the ‘bay’ syndrome writers actually think that their miserable couple can still do well together then why do they shove in the phase of divorce? Only because that’s the easiest way to earn ratings? In stead of exploring the opportunities of how they can show divorce & reconciliation in different lights, why don’t these bay syndrome victims try to explore their heads & see if they have a thing called ‘brain’ inside it or not & if by chance or by luck, they do spot a thing called ‘brain’ then how about putting it to good use because everything is there for a reason so why not use it & see how they go? There was a time when our writers used divorce as a last stage & also as a sign of freedom which put the kibosh on the misery of the couple involved but these days, seems like even divorce doesn’t put an end to the misery & the ex husband & wife still find it in their hearts to get back together, thinking everything will be alright while completely forgetting about the fact that they are divorced!?!?!?!

Coll 2

Mann Mayal; as declared by its creative team, #lovestoryof2016, #bestdramaever – also showed that ‘bay’shaoor & ‘bay’chari Mannu, even after getting divorced was ready to go back to ‘bay’ghairat Mikaeel & even he was thinking of taking her back saying everything will be alright & their cupid Mr. Sallahuddin told his mother that this is a ‘new zamana’ & things like these happen or rather, casual & temporary divorces like these happen so she should just chillax & that is why in the latest episode he was wondering if he could settle a divorced couple abroad for the sake of their kids? How amusing, right!

Even though I haven’t watched Pakeeza but a commenter told me that even after getting divorced, ‘bay’sharam Pakeeza lives with her ex-husband only for the sake of her daughter. I didn’t watch this drama but I did see the promos when it was about to go on-air, where the writer; Bushra Ansari requested people to feel Pakeeza’s journey & relate to it, well sorry writer sahiba, I can not relate to such a story which makes no sense to begin with? Things like these can be expected from Samira Fazal as #naamhikaafihai but I actually believed that Bushra Ansari; being such a seasoned actor with so much of experience knew better & could definitely do better, but sigh!!!

Then we have the most unique writer of recent times; Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, who actually twisted the concept of Halala so badly that my head hurts the moment I think about it. This drama showed that a ‘bay’ghairat girl got divorced because she was in a mood for a new adventure & when she got bored of it, she wanted to get back to her ex-husband so bad that these days she’s on a hunt for some ‘bay’ghairat who’ll become her temporary husband. Can someone please tell Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, that a marriage done with the intention of getting divorced is not valid in the first place, so why did he put so much of pressure on his ‘brain’ & come up with this script & not only that, wasn’t there even a single person in the entire creative unit who could’ve told him ke Uncle jee appse blunder ho gaya hai & this story can not be dramatized as it doesn’t make sense & doesn’t do justice to the concept of Halala actually?

Our writers need to understand that they have a responsibility & they have a duty towards those who tune to their dramas, that is why they just can not show something that happens to be their fantasy as it affects the mentality of others & reaches out to so many people out there. In the recent times, every time I have watched these dramas, I have felt that these writers need to enroll in the schools again & they need to pay attention to their Islamiyat classes because these are the concepts that are taught at a school level but seems like these writers were the famous bunkers of their times & they bunked most of their Islamiyat classes because if they had attended at least 2 – 3 of those lectures, they would’ve known better & they would’ve understood that they are psychotically twisting such basic concepts which serves no purpose at all.

The way these ‘bay’ syndrome victims are twisting the basic & straight forward concepts of divorce & halala is quite alarming. I actually feel infuriated to see that how easily these unqualified individuals believe themselves to be the writers & not only that, they take pride & joy in their writings which actually look like papers that were puked upon & deserved getting dumped into the dustbin but made it to the hands of the producers & they decided to produce it because of being money & rating mongers.

Coll 3

Being a fan & an avid viewer of Pakistani Dramas, I still have hope because in such dark times we still are getting dramas like Diyar-e-Dil, Besharam, Dil Lagi & Udaari, which have nothing to do with divorces still they keep the interest of the viewers alive & are being spoken about for all the right reasons. I hope that these ‘bay’ syndrome victims take inspiration from these drama-writers & come up with something better that has nothing to do with divorces & halalas. Also, I wish the producers curb their hunger for ratings & money & expand their vision to be able to see that those dramas who had nothing to do with divorces & halalas did good in terms of ratings too. I wish to see a better quality dramas with amazing scripts & an actual quotient of entertainment because what we see these days in the name of entertainment is everything but that. It is actually quite sad to see that the channel heads have become so commercialized that for the sake of their commercialism, they are taking such scripts that actually have quite a questionable content that doesn’t really sync with our religious & cultural values. Please share your thoughts about the writers that are suffering from the ‘bay’ syndrome & do let us know if you wish to see these victims getting treated professionally.

Dumpukht- Atish e Ishq Episode 5 & 6

Mohabbat taweez mein nahin hota, insaan Ki rooh mein hoti hai…

The contrast between Kulchu’s family and Billu’s family is evident by their approach towards life. Billu’s mother, Meher Nigar is a realist who turns to her Rabb for her needs whereas Kulchu’s mother, Tahira relies on the prophecies of her revered Peer.

Murshid ka hukum toh Tum logon ke liye imaan Ki tarhan hota hai… Ibaadat Ki tarhan baja latey ho ussey …

Bibi Sahiba knows how heavily influenced Kulchu’s family is and uses it to her advantage. She convinces Habibullah to steer Kulchu’s family toward accepting Bilal. Meher Nigar wanted Bilal to leave because she fears her son will become a peer worshipping zombie and her worst fears are realized when Haroon informs her that Peer Sahab wants to meet Bilal. Even though Habibullah wants to stay away from their personal affair, Bibi Sahiba has taken it upon herself to ensure their union.

Mera toh iteqaad hi nahin hain inn taweezon pe jo rishtey torh Taho… Khuda Ka Kalaam insaano ko jorhney ke liye bana hai, tornay ke liye nahin… Yeh taweez nahin mafakat-e-Amal hai…

We finally got to know the reason behind the feud between Tahira and Meher Nigar. Siraaj, Billu’s father was the bone of contention between these two. Once upon a time, Tahira was in love with Siraaj and when he didn’t reciprocate, she tried multiple taweez to lure him. Uska baap Phir Bhi taweez baat Ta tha- kabhi mohabbat ke aur kabhi nafrat Kay aur Tumhari maa jholiyaan bhar bhar ke lati thi… . . Meher Nigar developed an intense hatred for peers seeing how they misuse their status and play with the lives of people. Despite her hardships, she never faltered from her faith in the Almighty. Tahira gets violent and attacks Kulchu and threatens to do far worse and when all else fails, she goes to Meher Nigar to seek forgiveness.Tum jaison ke iteqaad ne un hey khudai Ki ghalat fehmi mein mubtila kardi ya hai…

Taana toh laalchi aur kameeney logon ko diya jaata hai- tumney toh qurbaani di hai, merey liye, iss gaddi ke liye. Hum dono ke baap dada Ki qabron ke liye...

Habibullah and Bibi Sahiba had an arranged marriage to secure family ties and retain control of their legacy. Habibullah loved someone else but had to succumb to family pressure as did Bibi Sahiba. I felt she not only enjoys controlling him but mocking him too. Is this all a game for her? Does she hope to gain some sense of inner satisfaction by seeing Kulchu and Billo happy? Or does she have something else in mind?

Dumpukht is turning into a gripping serial and I’m loving the unpredictability. Every episode reveals a little bit more about the characters and entices me towards the next one. Thought/ Comments/ Emotional Outbursts?

Tum Kon Piya Episodes 20 & 21 – A Marriage And A Breakdown

Eloquent dialogues and beautiful visuals are the two main strengths of this drama. Lack of character development however is its biggest weakness. When Elma slapped Arif it gave hope that this was going to be the change which most of the viewers had been waiting for but things went back to the way they have been ever since Elma stepped into that house. As a result Sharafat begum refused to keep Neha in her house and that is how Neha ended up living with Ramish. Sharafat begum’s tolerance for Arif’s behaviour highlighted her double standards once again. Zarbab continued comparing his wife to other women and his mother made matters worse by repeatedly telling him that Elma was not good enough. The only reason I continue to watch this drama and like reviewing it is that although the story is done-to-death but everything has been shown logically.

Ramish’s character stands out in this drama because he is the only one who truly believes in something, has certain principles and even with no change in his character he continues to be a likeable personality. Unlike some of the previous episodes Imran Abbas gave brilliant performance in these two episodes. I actually found it funny when Neha mentioned Elma api on the breakfast table; she is someone who always gets into trouble because she does not think before saying something! Sunbal’s conversation with Ramish in which she told him that she never thought she would be willing to marry someone who loved someone else was a good addition because usually when girls are shown in such situations in our dramas they lose their self-respect completely and forget the difference between right and wrong.

tkp

Zarbab thinks he is justified in having a girlfriend because his wife is not good enough and Sharafat begum thinks Elma is responsible for all the ‘nahusat’ in her house. Now that Zarbab has lost his job and Elma is in the hospital Sharaft begum will be dependent on Arif completely which will serve as a reality check. Rania made it clear that she was not going to entertain Arif’s family members before she got married to Arif and in the latest episode once again she told Sharafat begum on her face that they had everything except time for her! Very soon Sharafat begum will realize that Elma was the only person in this family who looked after her even though she never gave her any respect or love. I truly felt for Elma in this episode mainly because of the way Ayeza Khan portrayed her character on screen.

I would love to see Zarbab getting married to Javeria! That way not only he will suffer but also Sharafat begum. The best part of the preview of the next episode was watching Sunbal break off the engagement. She has broken off the engagement before too but I really hope this time she walks away for good. A girl like her shouldn’t settle for someone who does not want her in his life. Hira Tareen has a very cute face and she acts well too but the character she is playing doesn’t have much to offer.

tkp

Yasir Nawaz has put in all his effort in making sure that this drama is a visual treat. Did anyone notice the wall in the background when Zarbab picked Javeria in tonight’s episode? The pace of the drama has slowed down and it would be good if they wrap things up in the next 3 episodes. We have yet to see the downfall of Sharafat begum and Zarbab has to pay for the way he treated his wife. Will there be a happy ending for Elma?? Right now it seems unlikely.

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin Episode 2 – Secrets Revealed, Hopes Smashed

The preview of this episode which was shown repeatedly on HUM all week pretty much summed up what was going to happen in this episode and some of the promos also revealed rest of the story therefore I must confess that I wasn’t very excited about watching this episode. However, the little surprises which this episode had in store for the viewers turned out to be the reason why this episode was overall an interesting one. The secret that was revealed in this episode was the centre of attention right from the beginning. Although so far the story doesn’t seem brand new but there are some aspects of this drama which should be appreciated.

The subtle way in which different scenes have been directed has to be the best part of this drama so far. Haider and Shah Sahab’s conversation (which could have turned into a confrontation) was the highlight of this episode because it was not over-dramatic but it had an impact. Also, Shehla shared her feelings with her father when he talked to her about the proposal instead of giving in instantly. I mentioned this in the review of the previous episode and I feel the need to say it again; I appreciate the fact that everyone in this family can communicate with each other without shouting or going overboard. Showing these characters think about what was happening around them also helped understand what was going on in their minds. Shah Sahab loves Shehla like his own daughter but she is not a Syed Zadi therefore he cannot ‘betray’ his dead brother by marrying Haider with someone who is out of cast. This is the main reason why this marriage can never take place. The fact that this is not an easy decision to make even for someone like Shah Sahab was highlighted repeatedly. The scene in which he goes to reassure Shehla after she finds out she is adopted was very touching. Bibi Jaan and Shah Sahab both put what they should do before what they would rather do. Bibi Jaan’s approach is more matter of fact than Shah Sahab’s. This is definitely one drama in which emotions take a back seat!

sdbn

Mansoor (Emaad Irfani) was most surely interested in this marriage only because of the political and financial support he will get in return which goes to show that he puts his career before anything else. It isn’t only Shehla who is going to be forced into getting married to Mansoor but he too isn’t taking this new relationship very seriously. The actress playing Tahira failed to impress in her brief appearance.

Naveen Waqar was fantastic as the vibrant girl who was very sure that this marriage will eventually take place in the first episode. In this episode however there were times when it seemed like she was trying too hard. Overall, her acting was convincing enough but in some scenes it definitely wasn’t up to the mark. Ahsan Khan’s acting was brilliant throughout this episode as well. Jamal Shah is a natural actor who was a good choice for playing this role. The ‘happy days’ are clearly over because this episode was filled with reality checks which will change the way Haider and Shehla look at things forever. The happy family which was introduced in the first episode has a lot of secrets which once revealed were not taken well by the members involved for obvious reasons.

This episode was directed brilliantly and the script so far is on point although it doesn’t offer anything new. The preview of the next episode suggested that the conversation Shehla had with her father did not have the effect it should have had and quite naturally she feels like she does not belong in that house therefore she goes somewhere.

How many of you watched this latest episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Dhaani – Episode 06! (So Far So Good)

Ohkay so, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this week’s episode of Dhaani. I really like the comic factor that this drama has & also the way the situations keep on changing one after another. I must say I love the way all the characters have been written because they all have a personality of their own, which is really nice to see.

So, Rehan feels burdened by the responsibility that Riyasat has allotted to him & more than that, Rehan & his entire family knows the reason why Riyasat is being so generous & kind to them, that is because he wants to see Maya becoming a part of their family as being a father, he knows that his daughter actually really likes Sameer. Rehan knows that the moment he will step into politics, he will be needing the support & expertise of his people, that is why Tanveer suggested that Rehan should tag Sameer along because he is a fresh graduate & the time is right for him to step into practical life. Rehan has allowed Sameer to have a time of his life but even he feels that Tanveer is right & now it’s high time for Sameer to become a bit serious about his career & future. Sameer agreed to what his family suggested but he did feel a little pressurized as even he could feel that his family was paying a bit too much heed to his & Maya’s relationship, which for him is just a friendship & nothing more than that. Maya obviously is in love with Sameer & she has clearly spoken about her feelings but Sameer has never once reciprocated in a similar tone as he doesn’t see Maya that way, which makes it clear that Sameer is not into this relationship as much as Maya is.

As much as I enjoyed Dhaani & Shaani’s scenes, I actually really felt bad for Bee Jee & I felt the most for the fact that her nieces were exploiting her innocence. Bee Jee trusts Dhaani & Shaani a lot & she is so simple-minded & kind-hearted that both these partners in crime know the tact of using her innocence to their benefit & every single time she falls prey to their traps. Even though I really like both these girls but I wish at least Shaani was mature enough to stop her sister from doing something that can put the entire family in jeopardy as it would’ve made much sense if at least one of them cared about her father’s morals & principles. I love watching Bee Jee’s scenes, it’s like she adds such warmth to the entire situation & as much as I love seeing her, I hate how easily she gets fooled by Dhaani & Shaani. Bee Jee is like a mother to Dhaani & Shaani & I wish to see them not taking her for granted at least once.

Dhaani wanted to fulfill the promise she made to Sameer, that is why she tagged Shaani & Bee Jee along but the reason why Sameer showed up is something that Dhaani can’t even imagine. For Dhaani it was just a meeting that she arranged to get Sameer off her back but Sameer turned it into an opportunity to form a relationship with her as he is clearly attracted to Dhaani & more than that, he is fascinated by the idea that how can a simple girl from such a humble background can be so gutsy yet can be so clear-headed to not fall for him so easily. Even Sameer’s friend felt that he was only trying to form a relationship with Dhaani because his ego was hurt that a girl like her is not into him. I really wish that Sameer is not just playing around & he plans on taking Dhaani seriously. Also, I wish that before Dhaani does something stupid, she thinks things through & figures out in her mind if Sameer’s the guy she wants to be associated with because she clearly has seen his unsober side, so she shouldn’t just curb it & ignore it as if that side of Sameer doesn’t exist because that’s a fact & a reality about him that she is not oblivious of.

Sameer wants to know Dhaani better, that is why without even thinking for a second, he handed over his cellphone to her & I am sure no matter what Dhaani will say, Sameer won’t stop pestering her as he can’t stop thinking about her. Dhaani’s personality is admirable & she is adorable, that is why it is imperative for any guy to fall for her, but I just wish that his intentions are right. So far, Dhaani has succeeded in keeping Sameer’s mobile phone hidden but I can’t even begin to imagine what sort of hell would break loose in their household if Kaleem or Raja will find out about it. I had such a great laugh at the note at which the episode ended. The thing that Raja dreaded the most was about to happen & Dolly along with her Halwai father finally decided to show up at his place for the proposal. I can’t wait to see what will happen & what decision Kaleem will take regarding Raja & Dolly’s future. ;)

Overall, this episode was great & I enjoyed watching it a lot. I love Madiha Imam’s acting & feel that she shares a nice chemistry with Sami Khan. I love the way the episode was directed, all the scenes were to the point & all the situations seemed correlated. For me the star of this episode was Bee Jee for sure, she is such a lovely motherly character that you just can’t stop loving her. I appreciate her character & presence in this drama a lot. I actually liked the usage of the OST in this episode in particular, the instrumental was nice too & it complimented the scenes of Dhaani & Sameer a lot. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in the episodes that are yet to come. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Dhaani.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

App Ke Liye – Episode 06! (Unexpected Proposal)

0

Ohkay so, things are getting spruced up in App Ke Liye & it is turning out to be a decent watch as the episodes are progressing. I like the pace so far because each & every episode opens up a new chapter in each of their lives.

Washma finally convinced Shaheer to help her, which was a compensation she asked in return for helping Shaheer make up his mind about Omar. Washma only wanted her brother to get over with the idea of her marriage, that is the reason she wanted Shaheer’s help because she knew that despite the likeness her brother has shown for Shaheer, he will reject him after finding about all the personal details of his life. Also, Washma wanted Arsalan to get married to his lady love ASAP because she knew that it will silence Maryam up & she would stop giving Waheed a hard time over what happened between Washma & Arsalan. Washma is quite mature that is why she was trying her luck at so many places with so many people but little did she know that what she was wishing for was actually coming her way but with a little tweaking done by the destiny on it!

Shaheer agreed to help Washma & he would’ve done exactly what she told him to if Abeera hadn’t make an appearance to challenge him once again. I am not sure if Abeera deserves to stay in the picture because she’s a history & Shaheer & she are done & dusted, so not sure what’s the point that she is trying to make by hovering around him every now & then. Anyways, it was only because of Abeera that Shaheer decided to put forth a proposal for Washma because he wants to prove her wrong & he wants to eagerly let her know that he has moved on.

The meeting between Shaheer & Waheed came as a surprise to Washma & Maryam couldn’t stop nitpicking because she also has a point to prove that her brother was a better option in comparison to Shaheer. Well, Shaheer chose to tell everything honestly but later he caught Washma by surprise when he actually put forth his proposal for her. Washma still hasn’t been able to figure out what compelled Shaheer to do that but I hope when she confronts him, he will tell her the actual reason behind his decision because Washma doesn’t deserve to be kept in the dark about the reality.

I love how things are slipping away from Nishat Apa’s hands. She is making one plan after another for her brother & sister & they both are doing what she can never imagine. Nishat takes it as her moment of glory when she sees Shaheer asking her permission for each & everything & that is why she couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that Shaheer just ‘informed’ her that he was going to get married as soon as possible. Also, it is good to see how Areesha gives Nishat a hard time, at least she knows that she has Shaheer’s back & that is why she makes it clear to Nishat time & again that she won’t allow her sister to choose a course of Areesha’s life.

Overall, this episode was quite decent. I can’t wait to see the confrontation between Washma & Shaheer & also, I want to know what will compel Washma to accept Shaheer’s proposal & get married to him. Please share your thoughts about this episode of App Ke Liye.

Besharam – Episode 15! (Relationships Done Right)

Ohkay so, after quite a few episodes, I liked this episode of Besharam a lot better because things between Haider & Mishi have started working out but what happened in the last part of the episode does suggest that Mishi will land in deep trouble for what she did. I wish as they are showing us the personal lives of Haider & Mishi, they had shown us their professional lives too. Yes, Mishi has stopped modelling but it would’ve been better if they had shown Haider pursuing his career in politics because to see a man with so much of passion for politics wasting his time just like that doesn’t seem justified.

What I liked the most about this episode was the way it was shown that Mishi is becoming a part of Haider’s family & Haider is making an effort to become a part of Mishi’s family as well. It definitely has taken a lot for Mishi to make her place in Haider’s home & now her efforts are being acknowledged by Haider a lot. It was good to see Khadija sharing a conversation with Mishi too, may be because she was looking forward to Humna’s proposal but other than that, she herself has realized that Mishi is not like what she used to think about her. Haider’s compliments were done well & it shows how a man’s encouragement can bring a positive change in a woman, no matter how level-headed or independent she might be because a woman always needs love & support & that aspect has been covered brilliantly in this drama by showing Haider & Mishi’s relationship. I totally enjoyed the conversation that the entire family of Haider had with each other, it actually made them look like a close-knit family & the timing of all the actors & the chemistry between them was perfect too.

Just as much Mishi takes her as her duty to help Haider’s family to the best of her abilities, Haider also feels that same way, that is why without even informing his wife, he went to her home to have a conversation with his mother in law. I guess Haider has realized that Sara is lost & she is emotionally fragile, that is why he went to extend her some emotional support & Haider knows that really well because he has seen the regret & sadness in Mishi’s eyes every time she talks about her mother. Haider has seen that even though Mishi might not say it openly, everything that Sara has done & all her decisions have taken a toll on all her children & this is why Haider tried to make her realize that she still can rectify the situation & amend the broken ties. Even though Manan didn’t make an appearance but looks like he will be showing up in the future episodes. Manan ran away because he was tired of seeing his mother getting involved with one man after another & the way Mishi described that entire situation did actually make me feel for her & I believe Sara is the reason why Mishi despite being a model never went on that path as she knew that all that stuff comes with a baggage which not only affects the person involved but also takes a toll on the people that surround them too. I really liked the way Haider made Sara realize that may be Manan was waiting for her & she needed to break the ice. I am sure it won’t be long when Sara will start depending on Haider emotionally & then she will eventually admit that Haider is Mishi’s Mr. Right.

Saba finally dealt with the situation but I am not convinced that Kabeer won’t bother her again. I am sure he will keep on blackmailing her but for now, Saba did shoo him away. Sikandar found out that a huge amount was missing & it was good to see that he was more worried about the fact that he was answerable to Haider. It shows that at least he does have some conscience in him that made him worried about the fact that he has to fulfill the promise he made to Haider, even if he hasn’t told him the actual amount that he got as an advance payment. I am not sure how Sikandar will find out that Saba is the culprit but I hope he finds out soon before Saba creates an even bigger trouble for the entire family.

Well, Khadija approved the proposal that came for Humna but I will say that the last scene did seem a little unnecessary. They could’ve just shown that after spotting Mishail in the house, the doctor’s sister walked away because that was what Khadija was dreading the most, at least this way Mishi wouldn’t have had to put up an act of ‘besharmi’ in front of the guests. I am not sure how Haider will react to that but I have faith in Humna that she will explain things to Haider that she was the one who asked for Mishi’s help, but not really sure if she will do that because when it comes to Mishi, apart from Haider, no one takes a stand for her. I actually really like Mishi’s selflessness & admire her quality where she always walks an extra mile for the people she’s associated with, like she decided to pay the office rent because she was concerned about the school that Haider allowed that woman to run in his office space. Haider & Mishail are two characters that I genuinely like.

Overall, this episode was quite interesting & I loved seeing the entire family of Haider coming together. I am sure after what Mishi did, Khadija won’t forgive her easily but I hope Humna also defends Mishi like she always does. The acting of all the actors is amazing but for some reason, I really really enjoy watching Mehmood Akhtar’s scenes because he adds such realism to his performance that it becomes a treat to watch him. I really like Saba Qamar & Zahid Ahmed’s chemistry & they both for sure are one of the best on-screen couples that we got to see recently. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Besharam.

Zara Khatam Kar – Episode 23! (Falsafa Gone Wrong)

Seriously, are we watching Season 02 of Zara Yaad Kar? Because all the things that happened in this episode suggested nothing but that. The theme with which the drama began has subsided completely & it is so evident that the director is just dragging the drama to reach a certain number of episode that she had in her mind because all the tracks do not seem inclusive of each other & all the characters that are getting the coverage now are not the main characters, but seems like the director has forgotten about that completely.

Ohkay so, can Aneesa stop anticipating the arrival of her temporary damaad-to-be? I hated the way she challenged Haadi in a hope that he will eventually find a beghairat who will get married to Mahnoor for the sake of beghairti. Aneesa not only tried to convince Haadi but she shared her concerns with Mahnoor too where she made it evident to her that Haadi was a coward who wasn’t in a hurry, so if there’s someone who should make a move, it should be Mahnoor. Why is it that we have never once heard Aneesa tell Haadi to stop & forgot about this hideous idea that Mahnoor has presented in front of him? Aneesa is totally ‘cool’ with what Mahnoor has decided & that is why all her talks about sharam o haya, izzat & zillat seem meaningless as what Aneesa says or does doesn’t actually back those thoughts of her & more than Haadi or Mahnoor, it is Aneesa who seems to be in a hurry to get done with this sick ‘halala’ situation!!!

I am so not interested in what Anoushay plans to do with her life, why? Because she was introduced in such a later stage of the drama that it is hard for me to make some place for her in my mind as I was waiting for the conclusion & her addition has only dragged things up. She is just another clueless character in this story who has no brains & has no purpose, but is only making an appearance because the director told her to. I don’t see any chemistry between her & Waqar & also, I haven’t figured out how & when did Waqar get the time to trap her to such an extent that she is ready to elope with him? Seriously!!!

Chalo jee, as if everything else was sorted in this drama & everything was making so much sense that the director thought we needed a scenario change so she introduced this political situation which was so not done well. Gaiti’s brother has killed a guy & now Gaiti will make sure that her brother gets punished but Mehtab will keep on fabricating one lie after another to save her son? Seriously, does the director actually think that we’d be interested in this? Talk about the desperation of dragging a drama, I swear!!!

Honestly, in the beginning it looked like the politicians will play an important role in this story & it will be linked to the rest of the main characters somehow but the way it has been tackled was quite unintelligent & immature on the director’s behalf. A lot of characters & situations are now looking to be quite purposeless in this drama & that includes all these characters; Mehtab, Gaiti, her brother, Anoushay & even Waqar. The main theme of the drama revolved around Mahnoor but looks like the writer himself suffered from a short-term memory loss, so he forgot what he started this drama with & what he wanted to show & then looks like even the director lost the track of what she was directing & what the story was about.

This episode actually offered nothing, absolutely nothing & those who’re reading this review to make up their minds to watch this episode or not, my advice to them would be that they should save their time & save themselves from this 40 minutes of torture that actually seemed never-ending. I find it ridiculous that where couples who’re about to get married go out for jewelry, clothing or furniture shopping, Haadi & Mahnoor are the unique species that are shopping for a temporary husband. What a unique couple I must say!

I am actually sick of this drama now & I want it to end ASAP. After becoming a fan of Amna Nawaz Khan’s work because of ‘Shanakht’ I totally expected better from her but seems like even she gave in to the pressures of the commercialized mind-set of the channel heads & ended up ruining a play which already had no substance to begin with. This drama is a sheer torture & I hope it ends next week. Also, can Uzma stop being so robotic, she is lucky that she found a genuinely decent guy but oh well, the girls in our dramas are always in love with the most worst, spineless & awazaar guys they come across. Also, can Haadi stop being an ice statue in front of Mahnoor & do something which will guarantee the ending of this drama because like I said before, I am sick of it! Please share your thoughts about this pathetic pathetic episode of Zara Yaad Kar!

Ghayal – Episode 4

As was expected, this episode was very intense right from the beginning. Tooba and Geeti are woken up by someone throwing water at them and on seeing that it’s Adil, Tooba thinks he’s there to help them. But Geeti’s expressions show that she can sense the real matter.

ghayal2

At Waqar’s house, Salma consoles Aamna. Faiz, as always, is mostly complaining or finding out faults. Here also he says there’s no point in blaming fate and that the girls must have gone at their own will. Akhtar (Ayub Khoso) makes an entry as Geeti’s father. He breaks down after coming to know that his daughter is missing. Maira tries to comfort Ubaid and Akhtar but it’s difficult for them to control their emotions. Akhar still can’t believe his daughter has really been abducted and asks if the police have been informed. Ubaid tells him it’s better not to get the police or media involved because it’s a matter of the family honour. In the meantime, a phone call comes to Ubaid where Adil changes his voice and pretends to be one of the kidnappers.

ghayal1

It was interesting to see Adil giving his own twisted reasons for the kidnapping. He says Tooba’s decision to marry Moiz made him feel helpless and weak. He blames her for it and says they are both at fault. Now, he feels, they both are equally punished. Amidst all this, I did notice how pretty Tooba (Sumbul) looked as a bride. The jewellery, make up and dress suited her well and I really liked the look.

After Adil leaves, Tooba asks Geeti why she hadn’t told her that Adil felt this way and also says that she thought Geeti and Adil liked each other. Tooba only thought of him as a friend. Geeti tells Tooba to get married to Adil to get out of there but she forcefully denies, saying she hates him now. Geeti says Adil has crossed the lines between love and trust. Despite all this Geeti says that since their reputation is at stake due to this incident, they need to think of a way out. They worry about what their parents might be going through and feel bad. The girls shout for help but it’s of no use. The camera work was brilliant in attempting to show the audience that the girls were kept in a secluded place with no one around to help them out. It was a clever move from the director and DOP (director of photography).

ghayal3

Two days have passed since the kidnapping. Waqar, Ubaid and Akhar all gather to discuss with Adil about the situation. Here also he further tries to persuade them not to call the police. He tells them he’ll not give up until he brings back Geeti and Tooba. He emotionally blackmails Ubaid, saying he should trust him since he calls him his ‘son’. An odd thing that others in the family should have noticed was whenever everyone asks about Tooba and Geeti, Adil only answers about Tooba, which only goes to show how obsessively he thought about her.

Akhtar doesn’t look happy about not involving the police and is upset but also helpless. At Waqar’s house, Aamna and her sons are also worried. Faiz tells Moiz to forget about Tooba and says the family name would be maligned by marrying a girl who’s been kidnapped. They also worry about how Ubaid will manage if kidnappers ask for a ransom since he’s not financially well off.

Adil tries to emotionally support Khadija (Humaira Zahir) while Maira (Kiran Tabeer) and Tania (Shehzeen Rahat) keep praying for their safe return. From the beginning of the play, Geeti was shown to be a character that had knowledge of Adil’s feelings when none of the others did and now she has been kidnapped along with Tooba precisely for that. Adil is also punishing her for not helping him in wooing Tooba. As Geeti recalls the events leading to their kidnapping, Tooba realizes how they were led on and trapped.

ghayal4

Tooba plans to escape by hitting Adil on the head as soon as he comes in but it’s not so easy for a girl, even the two of them against a man. Then, Tooba tries again by agreeing to marry Adil. But he has revenge on his mind and plainly refuses. He says he’ll make the situation so much worse that Tooba’s parents would want Adil to marry their daughter but even then he won’t accept her. When Adil comes onto Tooba, Geeti tries to protect her. That’s when Adil shoots Geeti. Then Adil comes after Tooba. I wasn’t expecting Adil to actually bring out a gun and shoot someone. His character has turned completely dark now.

Adil’s friend is outside, who seemed like the owner of the bungalow. He tells Adil that he shouldn’t have killed Geeti but says he’d handle everything. In the morning, when Adil comes home in changed clothes, his mother thinks her son is making himself sick with worrying about the girls. Mothers are always shown to be a bit biased towards her children, especially boys.
Ubaid and Akhtar are still worried but Akhtar says he can’t really trust Adil. Ubaid keeps saying to have faith and says they’ll inform the police when Adil comes back. Tooba is shown screaming for help but obviously no one comes. She stays in the room with Geeti lying lifeless in one corner of the room. She can’t accept what has happened and is in shock.

ghayal5

All that has happened to Tooba is only the beginning of her ordeal and how or whether she even recovers from this shocking and tragic experience is for us to find out.

I noted quite a few things that didn’t quite match the situations in this episode, especially Faiz’s quirky sense of dressing. Even in the midst of so much tension he still manages to stay fashionable (a pair of yellow trousers, in this case). The same goes for the scene where Tooba’s sisters are praying and they had painted nails. In so many of the plays, I’ve seen this, even in funeral scenes, where the ladies are all dressed up like nothing has happened. Also, the repetition of the same dialogues does emphasize the point but more than twice, it just gets too much.

Sumbul Iqbal is flawless with her expressions, especially the trauma of seeing her cousin getting killed in front of her really is appreciable. It gave me goose bumps. Even though I was kind of expecting all this to happen in the episode but the portrayal and execution of the scenes was good and aesthetic. On the whole, in my opinion, it was a well directed episode.

How many of you watched this episode and what are your thoughts about it?

Naml – Episode 25

0

Honestly, I wasn’t happy in the beginning but rather irritated when the story was flipped between present and past But slowly and gradually it started making sense and not just that it was yet again a treat to read.

Ek Musfat Aalim-e-Tanween main, so literally this episode was all about Aalim-e-Tanweem meaning in a state of hypnosis and every character was seen experiencing the retrospective state.

So,the episode started off with a picture of court room and I assume all the Namlians would have been so happy as this is what Saadi wanted i.eTRIAL.
Let’s get inside the court and I believe you all will be seated with Yusuf’s Family…Bring on the game Hashim Kardaar!

naml1

1- In the first part of the trial as Zumar was defending Saadi or putting forth his character, Hashim kardaar went into Aalim-e-Tanweem and we were disclosed with the most possible guess that the passport weren’t sent by Dr.Aiman and I am now pretty sure it must be Saadi’s plan.

2- I appreciate the professionalism of Hashim, although he is evil and I don’t like him but the way he was gathering and noting down the cards Zumar was playing Man, they are exceptionally smart, especially when he noted” Ghareeb card.”

3- So, we got to know that Hashim did not want to get into the trial because there is still some insaniyat left in him, he is not at all a wehshi. He did not want to crush and demoralize the character of Yusuf’s and definitely he had to do the character assassination because he had no evidence against Saadi.

4- Once again a loser Aabi, I want to say to Zumar that “aap itni bhi zaheen nahi hain jitni main samjhti thi”, Mamun was mortgaged..Really Zumar ☹
and how cheap Haroon Obaid is that he didn’t even think of his own daughter and used her to trap the Kardaars and Aabi knowing that she was misused still tried to instill the idea to Faris Ghazi that what she can do for him, Zumar would never ever dare to sacrifice that much.Thankfully,Zumar told everything to Faris before all the hype that Miss Red created so their relation didn’t suffer.

naml2

5- Yayy! Ahmer is with team Faris and it was good to see him joking with Zumar and she advising him to stay away from Kardaars to be safe.

6- How Hashim got into the trial was actually divulged quite late but when Aabdaar was cunningly forcing Hashim for this trial, I was like this girl is evil genius and the dialogue in the brackets were( I am not doing this for you Faris) I thought she must be the reason for us to see Hashim in the court room but Nah! It was our Saadi.

7- Haneen giving Aabdar a cure to her emotional state but she refused it because she fancies the idea of staying and being in love. I did somehow feel that Faris will give her that same book as his waada of giving her something worth having…u remember?

8- Mrs.Javahirat ..Isse zyada kya giraingeen nazroan se? she tried to destroy Zumar’s life completely by sterilizing her. I mean this is the height of disgust, these Kardaars are in a deep valley of horrendous and evil crimes.

9- The nok-jhonk of Zumar and Faris was sweet as always that scrabble part was so adorable…Next time you play scrabble make sure to use “Zumarise”
“Faricissim” and “Ghazi”and it was good to see Faris and Zumar taking over the job of a dictionary and describing the definations of these newly added words.

10- Awww, Aabi is not that evil, the writer tried to make us feel for her and honestly, I felt she was nice and being compassionate when she was observing Saadi and helping him to get out of his fear.Evaluating NDE is quite amazing :)

11- About Nausheervan the less said is better, he knew that Hashim was not doing this ONLY for him but rather he was doing all this for himself. So selfish Hashim! But this is what is expected from you!!!

12- Faris revealed all the crimes of Khawar to his son, to torture him for his committed duty for Hashim Kardaar.

On the whole, I found that past present shifting idea a tad bit boring in the start but after that it all fell into place as the writer has a record of associating the situations and the characters as I experienced in JKP.A fast paced, power packed and happening episode it was with memorable and light moments of Faris and Zumar cute nok jhonks and they are specifically important as the novel revolves around serious crimes and to lighten the mood we really need these adorable fights! That Dau number insan is hilarious and that jhoot ko sach kardena about Zumar, I must say their tantrums are fascinating.

This novel is heading towards the end and few of the characters are going to shock us if we aren’t good at guessing!

There is still that Sarah part and Aabdaar’s dialogue where she says I will speak against all of you.. this all shows that in the next episode these will play mind games and will mark the victory for Yusuf’s Family.

Can’t wait more to read the next episode, apologies if I missed something.

Mann Mayal Episode 30 – Rest In Peace Common Sense

I thought we had seen the worst of Mann Mayal but this episode was yet another desperate attempt to make the viewers feel for Mikael and even Salahuddin. Too bad this attempt comes at a time when most of the viewers have completely given up on this play and fail to feel anything for any of the characters let alone Mikael! Mikael’s long speech with a kid who he did not acknowledge for so many years was stupid to say the least! I don’t even want to delve in to the details which made this scene a complete failure. So, technically we should all forgive Mikael since he has realized how wrong he was and he will most probably die any way!!!

sallu

The viewers were shown this useless speech for such a long time but the one conversation that was necessary was conveniently skipped. When Mannu came back the conversation between her and Salahuddin was covered with background music, which yet again proves the fact that the writer decided not to pen down any conversations which could have involved some thinking on her part.

mannu

This episode was full of filler scenes which made very little sense. Jeena brainwashing Mannu and Mannu shouting at Salahuddin for bringing her kids back were two more scenes which made absolutely no sense. Basically this was another episode which dragged the story further. Mannu’s mother finally made an appearance but she is as useless as always! If Mannu is going to visit them, shouldn’t they be sending her some money?? No one talked about that.

jeena

The preview of the next episode made me laugh so hard!!! The way Jamil came to save Salahuddin, Mikael being shot and in the end Salahuddin getting poisoned (Amen to that!!)…this could have been the kind of promo that makes the viewers go “Oh no!!!” but it didn’t have that effect on me because like many other viewers out there I don’t really care whether these characters live or die. Also, it just goes to show that the writer and the director have basically used every formula in the book and more to make something resonate with the viewers but when the story is so senseless it is next to impossible to relate to a characters.

jeena1

How many of you were actually shocked to see the preview of the next episode?? And how many of you were laughing while watching it?? I was definitely laughing because it just went to show that Mann Mayal is going to turn into an even bigger mad house!! When deaths (murder) and heart attacks are used by a writer to take the story forward and to keep the viewers at the edge of their seat then you know that there was very little creativity involved in writing the script.sallu2

Glimpse of 1st episode of Coke Studio

The fun Saturdays are back as the 9th season of Coke studio has just begun. This season is more interesting and exciting because more experimentation will be done as each song will either have a guest music director/ producer.

cs

Sasu Mangay
This song was sung by Umair Jaswal and Naseebo Lal, whereas the music director was Shiraz Uppal. In the previous season Shiraz did really well with the Atif Aslam’s Tajdar-e-Haram but this time the magic didn’t really work.

Janay Na Tu
The song was sung b Ali khan and it was simply like a sweet little love ballads, the music director is Jaffer Zaidi . Whereas on the guitar Kamran admani of Mizamaar was seen.

Aaja Re Moray Saiyaan
This song is sung by Zeb Bangash who simply was awesome. Zeb sung way better than Naseebo Lal and Abida Pareveen. The music direction of this song was done by Noori (Ali Noor and Ali Hamza).

Aaqa
This song was song by Abida Perveen and Ali Sethi but the tragic part is it did not sound that heart touching to me and sounded average. As far as Ali Sethi is concerned may be it was not the right choice of song for him.

On the whole Coke studio brought new combinations, some of which worked and some of which didn’t.

Dhaani – An Overview!

Ohkay so, the production of Baber Javed, writing of Hashim Nadeem & the direction of Ali Faizan; Dhaani is a drama that is currently being aired on GEO Entertainment on Tuesdays & 5 episodes have gone on air so far. The very first impression that I had about this drama was good & now that I am done with all 5 episodes, my impression hasn’t changed & I believe that it qualifies as a quality entertainment that one can tune to. The production value is good & the direction is great, the acting of all the actors is amazing & the chemistry between all the characters makes it a treat to watch.

So far, we have been introduced with 2 families & the story is pretty much going to revolve around them too. The first family happens to be of Sheikh Kaleem ud Din (Touqeer Ahmed Nasir), who has two daughters Dhaani (Madiha Imam) & Shaani. Kaleem ud din’s sister Bee Jee (Azra Aftab) along with her son Raja (Mubarak Ali) also lives with them & they are a close-knit family. Bee Jee is like a mother to Dhaani & Shaani & Kaleem is like a strict father to Raja that he doesn’t have. Kaleem ud Din is a man of principles, he is loyal, he is simple & he is very very conservative & that is why he has made sure that his household follows his footsteps too. Bee Jee makes sure that Dhaani & Shaani don’t really do anything to upset their father but when she feels Kaleem is taking it a bit too far, she always intervenes & requests Kaleem to go easy on his daughters. Kaleem most certainly is not appeased with the way Raja is leading his life. In order to instill the sense of responsibility in Raja, Kaleem opens up a kite shop for him which Raja along with his friends takes care of. Raja may seem a bit immature but when it comes to Dhaani & Shaani, he is like an over-protective brother who is mature enough to deal with any situation that his sisters report to him.

Coll 1

The second family that got introduced was of Rehan Seth (Asad), who is a son of a late politician who belonged to the interior part of Lahore. Rehan Seth’s family includes his wife (Ayesha Sana) & his two sons Tanveer & Sameer (Sami Khan). Tanveer is married whereas Sameer is a fresh graduate from London & is a party animal. Rehan’s father was a down-to-earth sort of a politician who stayed true to his people even after he won the elections & moved out of the interior Lahore, that is why even after his passing, the people of that neighborhood still respect him & his family. Rehan went abroad to study & that’s when he became far more commercialized & grew indifferent to his roots that his father was way more in touch with. On the request of his friend Riyasat, Rehan decides to join the politics again & that’s when he decides that he will contest from the same area that his father used to contest from, as he knows that only because of his father’s name, he will be able to win the elections & he will get a massive support of the residents of that area.

Coll 2

Kaleem ud Din manages the Haveli that belonges to Rehan’s family & he has been doing that from the time when Rehan’s father used to be alive. Rehan decides to celebrate Basant in the interior Lahore in his father’s Haveli, only to form a connection with the residents of that area & to let them know that he still is in touch with his roots, which actually is nothing but just an act that he puts up. That’s when Dhaani & Sameer come across each other & their track begins.

Sameer’s friend Maya, who happens to be Riyasat’s daughter is interested in him & even Rehan & Riyasat feel that Maya & Sameer should be together, that is why they don’t mind their friendship & allow them to hang out with each other as their parents feel they need to spend time with each other in order to form an understanding. Maya seems a bit more involved in this relationship whereas Sameer doesn’t take her too seriously.

On Dhaani’s front, she is a care-free, happy-go-lucky sort of a girl who is actually quite content with how her life is rolling. She shares a beautiful relationship with Shaani & Raja happens to be her partner in crime. These three are like best of friends but Dhaani & Shaani still draw a line in front of Raja at times as they know that he is not only over-possessive about them but he is short-tempered too, so they most certainly don’t want any more restrictions upon themselves as Kaleem has set plenty for them. On Shaani’s demand, Kaleem allows them to attend the college & that’s when Raja makes it his duty to keep a check on his sisters, so much so that he makes sure the cyber cafe is vacant when Shaani goes to get her notes printed & also he makes sure his friends follow their rickshaw when they go to college.

Coll 03

Everything in this drama was working for me & I actually really enjoyed how the story was situtational rather than being narrative, but the way the relationship between Dhaani & Sameer established & developed was something that was hard for me to digest & I most certainly believe that they could’ve used Basant & kite challenge as the grounds to do that too. As far as they have shown, Dhaani belongs to a very conservative background, so I didn’t really understand how she took ‘peena pilana’ so lightly that she went ahead with the bet initiated by Sameer as something that will restore her name & status. I know the writer was trying to make things different but I most certainly don’t agree with how in the name of comedy, questionable things are rubbed on our faces where Sameer challenged Dhaani to have a ‘drinking’ session with her & she went ahead with it, whereas in normal situations, girls from such backgrounds wouldn’t even dare sharing a conversation with such guys who so openly talk about drinking & drink right in front of them too! Yes, it would’ve looked far more justified if Dhaani belonged to an elite class because that thing wouldn’t have been such a big deal for her but to see a girl from such a humble background being totally cool with the idea of peena pilana was a bit hard to absorb. Anyways, this was the only thing that I most certainly didn’t enjoy & I am glad that it lasted for a very few scenes & I wish they subside the ‘drinking’ habits of Sameer because it will still feel a little out of the place if a girl like Dhaani will ignore these habits of Sameer & fall for him. I still believe they could’ve used Basant & the kite challenge as a reason for establishing a relationship between Dhaani & Sameer, but sadly, it was an opportunity wasted.

Sameer has developed an interest in Dhaani only because he finds her different & also because she happens to be different from those girls who drool over him. Dhaani only took his bet seriously & there were no strings attached from her side, but looks like Sameer is going to pester her till he will have a conversation or two with her. There are a few side characters too like Babu Botal (Kamran Mujahid) who supplies alcohol in the area & he is someone Kaleem loathes the most. Then we have Halwai whose daughter is Dolly. Dolly is interested in Raja & Raja is now trying hard to get away from her.

Overall, I really really liked the first 5 episodes of this drama & I thoroughly enjoyed watching them. There are a lot of great things about Dhaani but the best one for me is the relationship that Dhaani, Shaani & Raja share. Even though all three of them belong to conservative background, but they live their life to the fullest. I actually really like how things have evolved situationally & that keeps the entire journey a lot more light-hearted & interesting. I definitely like the comic dimension that the script has & that is something which earns extra points from my side. All the actors have done a fab job but Madiha Imam along with the actor playing the role of Raja take the crown. Madiha Imam impressed me with her acting in her debut project & she has grown so much as an actor. She really has done justice to this character & has carried the entire drama on her shoulders. I actually enjoy watching the scenes of Raja the most & I feel that is only because of the actor who has played that character to perfection, so much so that he not only has adapted that body language but even his accent is on-point. Touqeer Nasir & Azra Aftab add so much intensity & warmth in their scenes & that’s only because of their experience which speaks for itself. Sami Khan on the other hand looks comfortable for the first time, even though he is used to playing the roles that are quite opposite to what Sameer is like. I will however say that in the beginning the entire scenario of Dhaani did remind me of Preet Na Kariyo Koi because the similarities were quite evident, like interior Lahore, a close-knit joint family, girls not having a mother & a guy not having a father, a little touch of politics & an entire scenario being dedicated to the festival Basant & then the focus on kites in general. The way the life of interior Lahore was highlighted was what I loved about Preet Na Kariyo Koi the most & similarly, this is what I loved the most about Dhaani too. The director has done a flawless job & he actually has done justice to the energy & the vibrancy that Lahore offers by capturing it aptly. I am definitely looking forward to what is yet to come & if you’re following this drama, please share your thoughts about the first 5 episodes of Dhaani.

Kathputli – Episode 10!

Ohkay so, honestly speaking this drama has exceeded my expectations as it is turning out to be a very good watch. Even though in the initial stages of the drama, it looked like it was going to be a story that will rely heavily on the ‘bechari aurat’ factor, I am so glad that hasn’t turned out to be a case. All the characters are quite different and their personalities set them apart from all those characters that we might have seen in the past in such dramas that revolved around the similar themes.

Ahad went to Karachi & going by what he told Zaid, even he could deduce that Mehru has become quite special for Ahad, because of which he took a stand & fought for her. Right now, Mehru & Ahad, both are not ready to accept that they have grown into this relationship & they both mean something to one another but at least, it is good to see that they are taking their responsibilities seriously & they don’t mind lending a shoulder to each other to cry on when things get emotionally upsetting for them. Ahad’s concern about Mehru being alone while he was away was quite admirable. Even though Mehru tried to put up a facade that she was doing alright without him but the moment she found out that Ahad will keep on going away due to his job demand made her anxious, which was enough for Ahad to know that she wasn’t as comfortable as she was posing to be. I must say, I really really like the way Ahad & Mehru’s relationship is building up & also the way they both are dealing with each other because it looks like they have become such friends who can rely on each other emotionally & don’t mind going out of the way for one another.

Ahad met his father at an old age home & learned the truth about everything that transpired after he left his parent’s house. His mother passed away & Ahsan & Mehwish sent their father in an old age home to save themselves from fulfilling the responsibilities that they’d have towards him. Ahad finally convinced his father that he should come with him to Islamabad but he was concerned that his father will not only give a hard time to Mehru, but he will also taunt her & judge her character, which Ahad knew Mehru most certainly didn’t deserve, which was also quite admirable & mature of Ahad to be honestly admitting the truth about his father. It was good to see some changes in Ahad’s father’s perspective where he recalled about all the things he used to say to Ahad. Ahad might not have gotten a chance to take care of his mother, but at least he has his father to care of & not only that, he has a very mature & wise partner as Mehru who is ready to help him as well. Mehru’s concern about Ahad’s parents melted his heart & made him realize that she is a selfless & good human being who was ready to help him & go through the pain of dealing with his father who can be difficult at times. I am sure when Ahad will see Mehru taking care of his father, he will realize that she is someone who he should never let go of.

It is good to see that at least there’s someone who can silence Ehtashaam & force him to do some thinking & that is Saira. Saira is doing everything she can to make Ehtashaam realize that he is wrong & his decisions are affecting his mother’s health too. Zeenat finally realized that she wasn’t what a mother is supposed to be when it came to Mehru as she was too busy lecturing her to follow the instructions & abide by the rules that her brothers have set for her. It is good that things changed in Mehru’s life & she got away from that dull & depressed surrounding where she wasn’t even allowed to breathe freely. Mehru is living the life that she imagined that too on her own terms & conditions which actually is a blessing in disguise for her. Well, the new entry Saira’s cousin will only come in her life to create problems between her & Ehtashaam. I hope things won’t be stretched & the focus will be kept on how Saira will be trying to change Ehtashaam’s mentality because that’s what’s needed the most.

Overall, this episode was really interesting & I really liked the conversations that Ahad & Mehru shared whether it was about Ahad telling Mehru to keep the doors locked or whether it was Mehru telling Ahad how he shouldn’t ignore his father & his needs. I am sure Ahad’s father will give Mehru a hard time but eventually he will also learn the truth about her which will change his perspective about her. The preview of the next episode suggested that Shiraz will become Mehru & Ahad’s neighbor & things will then get a bit more tangled up. I am not sure if I am looking forward to the havoc that Shiraz’s presence will create in Mehru’s life but I hope Ahad will stand by her & will decide to to stay by her side. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Kathputli.

Be Aib – Episode 2

The second episode of Be Aib started with the engagement of Tooba and Taimoor. Sadaf finds it necessary to upstage everyone around her which is why she gifted Shahana APA and her husband with exquisite presents. Sadaf’s fake pride and controlling nature was further highlighted during her scenes with Tooba. The pact between the mother- daughter duo is supposedly for Tooba’s benefit. Tooba doesn’t have a personality of her own- she’s caught between what her mother expects of us vs her inability to think for herself. Overpowering mothers can impact children negatively as they never let their children grow into themselves but expect their children to be an extension of themselves. This pressure results in low self esteem and leaves them incapacitated to make their own decisions. Something as simple as taking her friends out for lunch becomes a topic of debate. Even though Sadaf has secured a suitor like Taimoor for Tooba, she feels insecure which is why she discouraged Tooba from introducing him to her friends and also instructed her to maintain a distance from Taimoor until they are married. Typically, I would’ve expected Sadaf would be encouraging Tooba to spend time with Taimoor but that’s not the case here.

Samina Peerzada’s gaudy saris, chokers, make up and those headphones are just too much. She’s such a fine actress and could’ve effortlessly conveyed this character minus the razzmatazz. I wonder why the director envisioned her this way instead of keeping her more real.

Alisha Yusuf has been very convincing albeit monotonous thus far- let’s see how her character shapes up in the upcoming episodes. Much of this episode focused on Inaya’s rishta. Shahana APA referred a rishte wali to Aisha and Safi to find a suitable rishta for Inaya. Not only is Inaya very self-conscious about her birthmark but as she parades back and forth with her tray of chai, every rejection is taking a toll on her. It’s hard enough for girls who have to walk the walk in front of countless rishte walis and potential suitors, but for someone like Inaya it’s even tougher.

It didn’t help that Sadaf lured a prospective proposal elsewhere. Sadaf seems to loathe her brother and his family because of their financial situation. She couldn’t even say a few kind words to Ahmed before he left but made it a point to stress on him working hard and not wasting his life like his father. The contract between Sadaf and Shahana is nicely done. Shahana genuinely wants to see her brother and his family doing well and without making them feel less than her, she tries to encourage them with her warm word and gestures.

The promo for the next episode revealed the turning point in the story. I like the pace of the drama so far and I hope they keep it moving. I don’t know who recommended that hairstyle to Noor Hassan but it is awful. It would’ve been a suitable look post his accident to signify his trauma. Let’s see if someone in the styling department makes any changes soon…

Udaari – Episode 19

Tonight’s episode focused on Arsh’s attempts to find out Sajida’s side of the story. All the developments were covered in detail which has slowed down the pace of the drama but there were no unnecessary scenes in tonight’s episode but the story should move to the next level in the upcoming episode. The scene in which Arsh asks Sheedan why they lied was one of the best scenes of this episode mainly because of the way Sheedan didn’t have much to say in her defense. Also, the fact that Sajida has a very weak case was further highlighted because she is not willing to tell what actually happened. This episode definitely had a lot of important messages to its credit. Firstly, Arsh’s advice to Sajida that she should not tell the police anything without asking him first and secondly telling her that no one was allowed to hit her were two very important points. The police had to change its behaviour after Arsh started representing Sajida which was another important message which showed how vital it was for people to take help from a professional in such a situation. Thankfully there was very little focus on Imtiaz in this episode. I must admit I am finding it really hard to relate to or feel for Zebu’s character ever since Hina Altaf took over. The little girl playing Zebu definitely added more substance to this character. Also, the chemistry the little Zebu had with all the other characters has been missing every since she grew up. Basically two very important characters – Zebu and Jaaza – have lost their effectiveness ever since they were taken up by these young actors who are not fitting into the roles. udari Sajida is not willing to tell the truth even if it means that she will be in prison for the rest of her life. This was another important message in this episode. By hiding the facts she thinks she is helping her daughter but she is actually helping the culprit get away. Imtiaz only has a stronger case because there is no way for Arsh to prove that this was an act of self-defense. Imtiaz also knows that Sajida will not tell anyone what transpired that night therefore he is taking advantage of the situation. It basically goes to prove that staying silent about such things isn’t a smart move. Farhan Saeed has done complete justice to his character. He has performed brilliantly right from the first episode. When his character was that of an immature youngster who had a big ego, he appeared to be just that and now that Arsh is mature and settled, he is equally convincing. The way Arsh tried to persuade Sajida to share her past with her was ideal but right now everyone is hoping that he will manage to find a way out without knowing the truth. Once things get worse for Sajida, someone will decide to tell him the truth. Arsh’s feelings for Meeran have not changed in all these years, something which was apparent from all his interactions with Meeran. Sheedan’s meeting with Arsh outside the prison and the way she kept on telling Imtiaz off showed yet again that she was fearless. Bushra Ansari was the perfect choice for playing this role, her effortless acting makes her character even more impactful. Sajida’s character turned out to be somewhat disappointing in this episode but I do feel that showing all this was important because many of the women out there will probably be able to relate to why Sajida is covering up for her daughter. I am also waiting to find out when and how Arsh will know the truth. In this episode all these intelligent people – Sheedan and Meeran in particular – were unable to think what Imtiaz could do if he wasn’t punished for his crime. udari1 Inz-e-Yazdan and Hina Altaf are standing out in this play for all the wrong reasons. It is unfortunate that the director was not able to find better actors for playing these roles. The young actors playing these roles were brilliant therefore the viewers had high expectations from the actors who were going to play the roles of Zebu and Jaaza now. The bond which both these characters had with rest of the family members has been broken because of total lack of chemistry and the lack of expressions and acting! Even the actor who plays Sheedan’s brother is a very gifted performer. Rest of the cast is so perfect that it never seems like any of them is acting; they are faultless in all the scenes. The preview of the next episode showed Arsh talking to Zebu and hopefully the secret will be out in the next episode because this track got a lot of screen time in this episode. The drama needs to pick up pace at this point. How many of you watched this latest installment? Do share your thoughts about it. Fatima Awan

Thora Sa Aasman – Episode 05!

0

Ohkay so, this episode was interesting, but I am concerned about one thing & that is the lacking similarities between the script of this drama & the original novel itself. I do understand that when a novel is dramatized, a little bit of tweaking is required as drama & novel are two different mediums of story-telling, but what I am not understanding is the reason behind changes that have been made in the original story because if I consider the story of the novel itself, I find it just perfect for it to be dramatized, so not sure if they will be able to justify these changes that they have made. I know the drama-makers have tried to simplify the story by interlinking the tracks of all the characters in the early stages of the drama but what I am most concerned about is the track of Fatima because I have started to feel that she has become a supporting character in the course of the story being over-simplified for the drama, whereas in the novel, she was the integral part of the entire story. I hope they do justice to her character & do not compromise on her value because Fatima is the binding force & is the main part of this story.

Baqir Shirazi is fixated with Shahista Kamal & that is why only for the pleasure of her company, he has started to broaden his trap by preying upon Haroon Kamal too. Since the day Shahista has grabbed Baqir’s attention, things related to her have started to unravel in front of him & it seems like what he is wishing for is meant to happen because first, he found out that Haroon needed his approval for his business deals & second, he found out the major link through which Baqir could black-mail Haroon & that was Zarka. Baqir found out that Haroon not only had relations with Zarka but he married her as well & that was something that Baqir decided he could use to put Haroon in his right place & take a step closer to Shahista Kamal.

Only a single meeting between Baqir & Haroon was enough for Haroon to know what Baqir knew about him & how he was ready to use his personal life details against him, that is why he told Shahista to draw a line, but then, Haroon has always been quite opinionated & he never really cared about what Shahista might have to say about his reputation, so to see Haroon getting intimidated by Baqir wasn’t really in line with his character. Haroon has been ruthless & he never really held back in letting Shahista know what sort of a person he was even after she spotted him with Zarka in a shopping mall, so to see Haroon getting burdened by a detail of his past was quite unlike him.

Fatima came across Shahista in quite an early stage of the drama, however she thanked Shahista for the help she extended & later with the help of Rabeea, she met Sadia & started living with her at her home. Sadia is a new entry, in the story & in the drama as well because her character never existed in the novel. I somehow feel by making things easier for Fatima & by showing that everyone around her has been quite generous with her, the director has compromised on Fatima’s potential & the emotional strength that she embodied. Through Fatima’s character, the drama-makers could’ve sent out such a strong message that a woman can achieve whatever she wants to against all the odds, because of her will but somehow, I feel the character of Fatima has been made weak & the purpose that she had is not coming through like why did she adopt Shaheer & also, how will she stay strong & fend for herself because as per the novel, Fatima’s entire journey was quite inspiring & it showcased the struggles that a woman like Fatima had to go through who chose to live life on her terms & conditions & who shaped up not only her life but the life of those children that came into her life. In this episode I actually detested seeing Fatima in the background like a supporting character, as if she had no personality & had no direction in life & then I also disliked seeing the actual supporting characters come into the foreground & getting all the coverage!

Sadia happens to be Zarka’s sister & seems like even she married someone out of her love for him, just like Zarka married Haroon because she loved him. Sadia chose a totally different path in her life where despite having nothing, she feels she has everything. Zarka on the other hand after giving birth to the twins, has once again decided to get married & revive her career that suffered due to her marriage & then her pregnancy. Zarka could also have lived a fulfilling life if only her husband wasn’t so selfish & so emotionally absent. Anyways, Zarka’s mother thinks it is better for Sadia to look after Zarka’s twins because she doesn’t have a child of her own & this should be a secret that Zarka’s potential husband should never find out about.

Saqia has made quite a progress in her life & she is ready to live independently. Saiqa has forgotten all about those limits that her parents & her good-for-nothing husband set for her & that is why, she has gained a confidence that even confuses her parents now. Saiqa knows she has a strong back due to which she can deal with Zafar & now when she is fending for herself, Zafar holds no importance in her life to sit & listen to his taunts & commands. Looks like Shahista is still in search of a baby & that is why she keeps on visiting the orphanage & now it has been made clear that even Haroon is not oblivious of the reason why Shahista goes to Hyderabad. A lot of things have yet to unravel & I can’t wait to find out more.

Overall, this episode was interesting & the preview of the next episode suggested that things will move forward. I wish the director hadn’t kept all the focus on Shahista/Haroon/Baqir’s side of the story & had given Fatima’s character the due coverage too because her story is what I was most excited about. I wish as the episodes progress, Fatima’s character takes a front seat & her journey is covered appropriately too because right now I am not feeling her character at all as she is looking like someone who has no clue & is only making through life with the helping hand of others. Fatima’s character was the most positive character of this entire novel/story & I wish we get to see more of her. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.
