Yeh Raha Dil Episode 06 Review – Comedy Done Right!

Ohkay so, just when I thought that things might get serious after Hayat & Zaki returning back to Pakistan, I was pleasantly surprised that the quotient of comedy was kept alive in the show even at this stage & because of that, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode of Yeh Raha Dil as well. I am so happy with the direction & the pace of the drama & I really hope it stays this way because every episode brings new developments with it, which is great.

So, Zaki left after learning the truth about what Hayat said to Nida. Even though Hayat couldn’t clarify herself & even though Zaki left on a bitter note, I found it quite sweet that Hayat missed Zaki & most importantly, the friend that she found in him. Zaki actually left a good impression on Hayat because she couldn’t imagine that a guy like him who would always get annoyed by Hayat was actually being considerate towards her & was taking care of smallest of things to comfort her. I think it was quite sweet that Hayat actually missed Zaki like a friend because actually the bonding that they shared was quite special to her.

So, just when I thought that things would get a little awkward for Zaki, he was welcomed with open arms by his parents & then Nida as well. I must say, I loveddd the new entrant in this show which is Julie. Julie actually got quite a lot of coverage & ended up being the one who not only brought Nida & Zaki together but Zaki’s parents closer to her too. It was quite amusing yet adorable seeing all of them like a one happy family being worried about Nida’s pet Julie & I thoroughly enjoyed that entire scenario.

Things surely are working in Zaki’s favor because his father is not only too generous but he loves his son a lot too. Even though it was quite a coincidence that Haroon ended up buying Hayat House but it seemed quite convincing. Haroon had a vision for his son where he saw Hayat House as a perfect place which Zaki could turn into his restaurant. Zaki & Nida were over the moon because they got Haroon’s approval & that is exactly why they didn’t mind the condition that Haroon put forth where he wants Zaki to establish his business in the span of 6 months. I must say, Ayesha Sana as Nida’s mother was a perfect choice, like the mannerisms of both the mum & the daughter were quite similar. I laughed a lot at the conversation that Nida’s mother had with Zaki where she couldn’t stop emphasizing on the fact that Zaki hit the jackpot because her daughter Nida the great, chose him as her life partner, lol!

I must say I loveee how Zaki is always the bone of contention between Haroon & Azra where they keep on fighting over their son but at the end of the day, they both love Zaki unconditionally in their own unique way. Where Azra is a typical emotional mother who wants to fulfill her son’s every single wish, on the other hand Haroon is a practical father who wants what’s best for his son because he knows Zaki a bit too well. I must say, I actually look forward to Azra & Haroon’s scenes because not only their conversations are witty but the actors playing the roles of Haroon & Azra have such an amazing chemistry as worried parents of their burger bacha. It is a rarity in any drama for the characters of parents to be as interesting as the younger lot of the characters & I feel the writer should be commended for that.

So, where everything was going extremely well for Zaki, for Hayat everything turned out to be a nightmare because she finally learned the truth that Salman sold her house & moved out of Pakistan. Even though Salman’s friend suggested filing an FIR against Salman but then again, even though Hayat was scared at the scene she witnessed at the police station, she obviously also understood that there was no point in doing that because Salman was out of her & the police’s reach. It was quite sad to see Hayat looking at her house like it didn’t belong to her anymore, where she had spent her entire life & now all she was left was with the memories of all those days that she lived there. Even though things are looking grim for Hayat at this stage but luckily for her, this house now belongs to Zaki & his family & Zaki has already shown Hayat what he is capable of, in terms of niceness & how he can be a Good Samaritan, so therefore, I am actually feeling relieved that Hayat won’t be suffering much as I assumed because she will have Zaki’s support.

The preview of the next episode seemed quite interesting because looks like Zaki is going to be the one pleading Hayat’s case in front of Nida & Haroon. I don’t know why but I have a feeling that Haroon might tell Hayat to work for Zaki, like may be his restaurant manager or something because she has quite a personality & if she’d come across Haroon ever, I am sure she will leave quite an impression on him. I am thoroughly enjoying watching Yeh Raha Dil because the story is quite interesting, the characters are beautifully written, the situations make a lot of sense & the best part is, everything is conveyed in such a comic manner that it completes the picture flawlessly. I must say, I love the fact that they have kept the comedy quite subtle, believable & situational where you can actually relate to all those witty dialogues because usually this is how regular people communicate on a daily basis too, the best thing is that nothing seems forced when it comes to comedy that is why it is working just right! Ahmed Ali, Yumza Zaidi, Anam Gohar & the actors playing the role of Zaki’s parents, all of them have done such an amazing job & I must say, their comic timing is commendable. Even though we have very few characters in this drama but all of them have such interesting personalities & have so much to contribute in their own accord, that all of them seem to be an important part of the story. I can’t wait for the next episode already. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yeh Raha Dil!

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

“I Was Once Asked To Be A Body Double For Priyanka Chopra,” Shares Zhalay Sarhadi

If there’s one actress, who has that unique quality of making each character her own with her natural acting prowess, it’s Zhalay Sarhadi. Not just TV, the very talented actress earlier amazed us with Jalaibee and is now set to star in the upcoming movie Chalay Thay Saath.

A post shared by zhalay (@zhalay) on

The Express Tribune got in touch with the cast of Chalay Thay Saath, the conversation kick-started on a quirky note with the ever-charming Zhalay Sarhadi joking about being compared to Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra. “I started working the same year that Indian channels got banned in Pakistan and Priyanka became Miss World. I remember, I was hosting a show back then and everyone thought it was Priyanka and not me,” said the supermodel. “It’s been this way ever since that time. I bet even Priyanka knows about me by now.”

Zhalay recalled how once an Indian actor she had been working with sent a picture of hers to his friends and agents as a joke. “The agent asked him, ‘Who is this? Priyanka ki cousin aisi tau nahin hai. Someone from India then approached me to do a body double for Priyanka, which really offended me,” she said. “I thought, ‘really?’.”

A post shared by zhalay (@zhalay) on

About the role she has plays in Chalay Thay Saath, Zhalay proudly said, “I don’t play the female victim anymore; I do characters that are real. In films, you’ve got more opportunities to explore but breaking stereotypes takes a lot of work and I believe films like Chalay Thay Saath are doing that.”

Korean Producer promises to show the peaceful face of Pakistan through her documentary

0

A two-member Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) team filmed various Buddhist sites of Gandhara civilization, which they will air on South Korean official television .

Lee Heon and Miss Hong, Eun Hee, producers of the KBS, are going to the ancient sites on the invitation of Dr Esther Park, General Secretary, Gandhara Art and Culture Association (GACA).

Before coming to Taxila the KBS team also visited Lahore, Peshawar, Swabi, Swat and Gilgit and filmed various Buddhist sites.

“I have visited Sri Lanka, Thailand, China and Armenia to record various cultural sites but the potential and cultural diversity Pakistan harbours is unique and significant,” said Miss Hong while talking to Dawn.

“What has really captured me about Pakistan is the kindness of the people here; really they are generous and hospitable,” she added.

“Through her documentary she will now show peaceful, tolerant and hospitable face of Pakistan to the world especially to Buddhists across the globe,” she added.

Talking to this reporter Dr Esther Park said that Gandhara Art and Culture Association would organise an exhibition of Gandhara artifacts and sculptures in Korea in June.

She claimed that most of the Pakistanis might not be aware of the fact that South Koreans trace the roots of their Buddhist heritage to centers of Gandhara civilization located in Pakistan.

She said that through the exhibition the rich Buddhist archaeological treasure of Pakistan would be displayed in Korea.

Humayun Saeed and Yasir Nawaz speak about young actors in the industry

0

The film industry of Pakistan might seem like it’s all full of glitz and glamor from the outside but the inside story is always different.

Two of the senior members of the industry have recently talked about what goes on behind the scene and we bring it to you.

Humayun Saeed told Dawn, Images:

“There are young actors who have barely made a place for themselves but who will arrive late or demand that a certain kind of car is enlisted to transport them to and fro from shooting locations” “If we are traveling, they will require a certain hotel for their stay even though the producers themselves may be staying elsewhere. The demands go on and on and as filmmakers, we try to fulfill many of them and keep things professional. But when stars create difficulties we are unlikely to work with them in our next project.”

Yasir Nawaz also talked about the struggles he faced while shooting his movie, Wrong No where his two leading ladies had some issue with each other:

“They refused to talk to one another and had these frustrating preconceived notions about each other. They’d come to me cribbing about each other and I’d have to iron things out,” the director-producer had revealed.

“It’s a problem with the new generation of actors. They start thinking too highly about themselves even though their careers have only just started out.”

While talking about young stars complaining about their scenes being cut, Humayun Saeed said:

“Experienced actors sometimes have a sense of what will work on screen and what won’t, whe. working with younger scriptwriters or directors, they frequently make suggestions that are taken into serious consideration. It may not have anything at all to do with internal politics, especially in ventures financed by big production houses.”

Sana Safinaz claims copy rights for prints they copied themselves

0

In today’s world, everything makes it to the internet and nobody can just get away with things easily now.

Sana Safinaz recently ran out of their copy rights notice on a newspaper soon after the release of their latest Spring collection.

A piece of Sana Safinaz latest spring collection apparently seems to be a copied artwork of international brand Pronovias Ceremonial from their 2015 design collection.

It didn’t take long for the news and pictures about the copied print to go viral on social media.

However, Sana Safinaz responded by passing down a legal notice of claiming copy rights of the prints in Pakistan.

We wonder how they could claim copy rights over an already copied print. The matter has become rather funny and we wonder if the social media will question them further.

Tonite With HSY Episode 2 – Ayesha Khan Steals The Show

Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, aka HSY, returned with a brand new season of his talk show ‘Tonite with HSY’. I must confess that I was never an avid follower of any Pakistani talk show because the shows I’ve watch seemed too over-dramatized to me since couple of segments were always more or less pointless.

However, this is the first time i watched an episode of Tonite With HSY, because my readers asked me to give this a try and i must say i’m quite impressed because i feel that this show is probably the best talk show we have. Not a fan of HSY, but he surely is somebody not alien to the camera and his zealous mannerism into the show was the perfect mood lifter; it has definitely put this show on my weekly watch list.

HSY invited OKB and Ainy Jafferi in the first episode of the 4th season and he has kept the momentum high this week again by inviting another two celebrities with a huge fan base- the ravishing Ayesha Khan and the very handsome, Azfar Rehman. Like last week, he invited the guests one after another giving some extra time to chat with Ayesha Khan before Azfar joined them. For a moment, I wasn’t sure whats up with HSY and Ayesha Khan but then he stated that he’s known Ayesha Khan for years before she started her career.

So, this time around HSY was cheeky enough to clear all the rumours surrounding Ayesha Khan. Oh boy, there are a lot and i liked the way she responded to them (not for all though). Alright, lets get into what she said, so for like the billionth time Ayesha had to assure that she isn’t dating Hamza Ali Abbasi, though she was witty at it (mind you girls, there’s no chance for you either lol). HSY’s questions were getting more witty as he spoke about the hate people have for Ayesha Khan. So, she believes that people hate her because she has good ‘male friends’ (is that really the case here?), i remember she said this in an interview with BBC too! Well, she names her friends too and we had to hear them again!

However, Ayesha owned it completely- from witty answers to amazing gestures, she was a delight to watch. Her strong comment on Bollywood did not went unnoticed as she said that it’s better to work in Pakistan then to work in Bollywood and get kicked out.

Then came in Azfar Rehman, who spoke about his friends, his personality issues with Sohai Ali Abro and yes his marriage. He revealed that he’s a really different person and his wife is someone who is used to his lifestyle. Moreover, HSY asked Azfar about his remarks on Faysal Qureshi (for the toilet cleaner ad) and it was surely a fun moment. Anyways, according to Azfar he’s good at making the toilet dirty but not cleaning! Needless to say he’s a very competent actor and fun to watch, and not to forget he’s really good at giving disclaimers to safe himself!

There were many segments which were fun, but i still enjoyed them having casual conversation since HSY was clever enough to get the facts out of them. This episode of Tonite with HSY was filled with that tongue and cheek humor, it will be fun tuning in next week to see what HSY will have in store for us.

What do you think of Tonite With HSY’s 2nd episode? Do share your thoughts.

Maleeha Lodhi talks about the need for women empowerment in Pakistan

0

The permanent representative of Pakistan to the united Nations, Maleeha Lodhi said that the government haa to take more steps for the empowerment of women in Pakistan.
In a briefing to United Nations at the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women at UN Headquarters, Maliha Lodhi highlighted that the theme of the conference was to empower women economically.

“This is what gives you confidence, makes you a productive citizen, and teaches you how to assert your rights, before, I talk about how parents should raise independent girls I want to speak about how boys should be brought up,”she said.

She also added that parents should tell their boys to respect women, something that even our religion preaches.

She said that families have legitimate concerns when they send their women for work as the environment at workplaces is not as accepting yet.

“Despite that it is heartening to see so many women working in the media, as lawyers and at other places.”

She said that the main purpose of the event was to promote positive image of Pakistan across the world.

Faryal Makhdoom thought her marriage would be nothing less than a fairytale

0

Faryal Makhdoom, wife to the famous British-Pakistani boxer has been under the media spotlight’s for quite a long time along with her husband.

She has often made statements about her in laws on media and this time, she has claimed that she thought marriage with Amir Khan would be nothing less than a fairytale.

“In my head, living with my new husband was going to be this fairytale. But it was hard and I didn’t have any friends. Bolton is very backward. Compared to New York, it’s a village,” she said.

Faryal lives with her family in England after moving out from Amir’s home in New York.

Faryal also denied reports of having any plastic surgery. Instead, she said that she resorted to ‘fillers’.

“Because of lack of sleep, genes, dehydration, I get bags under my eyes and I wanted to get them lightened. So I went to my doctor, Simon [Ourian, a renowned cosmetic surgeon in LA] – he’s also Kim Kardashian’s doctor,” she explained.
The model also claimed of getting fillers in her cheeks as she “likes high cheekbones”, apparently for which she was linked to Micheal Jackson by her in-laws.

“If other women had this money and if they had a husband who was famous, they would do it, too. If I wasn’t married to Amir Khan, I’d probably be a regular girl and I might not do it. But I’m in the limelight, I go to events, so it’s part of my life now,” she said when talking to an international media house.
Talking more about her liberal pictures out in the public, she said that had concerns over showing too much skin as she is a “Muslim woman, so [she’d] like to be covered up”, although defending her Western dressing against her in-laws’ criticisms.

We wonder for how long the family feud will go on and for how long will they resort to media to get back at each other.

Saeed began the dramatic reading with Manto’s Yazid and her performance was brilliant.

There were some technica difficulties in the play. However, that did not affect the actor’s performance at all.

Erfan Khoosat’s rendition of Manto’s Toba Tek Singh was also done well. It is a popular story which was well-received by most in the audience

The Napa International Theatre and Music Festival will run till April 2 with different plays and musical performances as part of the offering.

Sammi Episode 8 Review – Well-Executed

All the tracks in the story got sufficient screen time in tonight’s episode and so far the story is moving forward at a steady pace while covering all those little details which make it easier for the viewers to connect to the stories of all the characters. The scenes in the parlor have especially been directed really well. The presence of clients and everything Sammi does wrong when she is distracted gives these scenes a very real feel. In the past too we have watched some dramas in which women were shown running their own businesses but usually these coffee shops and parlors were not as busy as the one we are watching in Sammi right now and a lot of times the whole scenario seemed very staged as well because of this reason. These are minor details which make a huge difference. Also, the fact that all the different tracks in the story are interlinked makes this drama an interesting watch.

Sammi Episode 8 Review - Well-Executed

This episode opened with Sammi refusing to do pedicure because she thought she could do something better with her life. Sammi’s character is shaping up to be very interesting, I love the flashback scenes, they are poignant and they give the viewers an insight into the kind of relationship Sammi had with her family before she was abandoned by them. These scenes also make the viewers relate to Sammi’s frame of mind which was shown in the previous few episodes; there is a good reason why she had a tough time accepting the fact that her family members no longer cared for her and even after everything that happened, she was still planning to go back to Rahim Yaar Khan. In this episode however Sammi opened up about her “status” with Salar and did not show the desire to go back to Rahim Yaar Khan. Mawra Hocane’s acting was right on point in this episode. Her perfect portrayal is definitely making it easy for the viewers to connect to and feel for her character. Salaar and Sammi’s relationship with each other however is my least favorite part of this track because it is somewhat clichéd and you can’t help but wonder why someone like Salar would show so much interest in Sammi. It would have been so much better, if these two were just friends for now or if Salaar felt for Sammi more than anything else. Salar calling up Aalyan to learn about “Vani” was another aspect of this episode which was rather strange since he could have easily searched for the term on the internet! Aalyan and Salaar’s friendship however is another interesting part of this drama. Ahad Raza Mir and Bilal Khan both are confident actors and their roles are different as well.

Sammi Episode 8 Review - Well-Executed

Chandni and Sammi’s interactions have been written and directed faultlessly. Sania Saeed looks and acts the role almost effortlessly. Naheed decided to go ahead with the nikkah even without the consent of her brother. Naheed’s track has my undivided attention because it is the most unpredictable tracks in the story. Rashid’s mother definitely wants Naheed to get married to her son therefore I am waiting to see if she manages to blackmail Rashid into getting married to her and whether that happens before Naheed enters into a nikkah with Ghulam Rasool or later on.

Chaudhry’s conversation with Rashid’s mother clearly showed that he did not trust Rashid any more. I must say that Rehan Sheikh is one of those actors who never fail to impress. Every time he is on screen he makes his presence felt. Once again Chaudhry’s conversation with his son was the true reflection of the kind of mentality which produces men who think they own women.

Overall, this was another interesting episode of Sammi which was very well directed and acted out. Sammi has tons to offer and it keeps on giving me something to look forward to every week.

How many of you watched this latest episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Abdullah Seja’s Wedding Pictures

Producer Abdullah Sej’s Mehndi was the latest talk of the town as it was nothing less than a star studded night. However, his reception was a close knit ceremony with just close friends and family around. He tied the knot recently and the wedding reception was attended by a few popular actors like Humayun Saeed, Faysal Qureshi and Fahad Mustafa.

Here’s congratulating the new couple on their marriage.

Sarwat Gillani: “People are okay with item numbers but if a pregnant woman shares a photo of herself then she has committed some kind of sin”

Pakistani actress Sarwat Gilani is busy working for TV serials and is also gearing up for directing a theatre play for the Special Olympics. Recently, she received backlash from the audiences over her latest photoshoot.

Speaking to Something Haute, here’s what she has to say:

“I didn’t even know about the hateful comments till my PR manager messaged me, saying ‘Sarwat, what do you want to do about this?” Sarwat Gillani said that she doesn’t check social media that regularly which is why she was unaware of how the audiences reacted to her photos.

A post shared by Sarwat Gilani Mirza (@sarwatg) on

“The kind of comments I got from people were really shocking! One woman said ‘Isko sharam nai aati apne husband ke saath ye kartay hue?’ I was like, excuse me? Whose husband am I supposed to be doing this with then?”

She continued, “But I’m honestly amazed at our society. People are okay with item numbers; they’re okay with actresses doing their latkas and jhatkas. They’re even okay with showing marital affairs on television. But if a pregnant woman shares a photo of herself with her husband, then she has committed some kind of sin.”

A post shared by Sarwat Gilani Mirza (@sarwatg) on

“Pregnant women have normal lives up until the last couple of weeks. We work and go about with our businesses. Just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean I’m crippled! It’s not a disease or something that needs to be hidden because haye it’s so shameful,” exclaimed Gillani. But the actress believes that there are numerous factors that contribute to this such as religious beliefs.

“A lot of it comes from Bollywood too. Have you seen the way they portray pregnant women? They have an almost god-like persona. There is also a lot of superstition around how nazar lagti hai.”

However, before we blame Bollywood, it’s best to take a look at what’s happening on our own screens. Women usually don’t have very respectable characters. They’re either being bullied, or intimidated by their husbands, mothers or other family members. If a woman isn’t a weepy willow then she’ll be an evil seductress. There’s no in between.

“I have made a conscious effort to stop doing regressive characters. I’ll sit and try to reason with writers and directors that what you’re showing on screen isn’t real. Also, the women who are actually watching these TV plays are nothing like the women being depicted on screen. These women are the real heroes; they fight with their families and husbands to drive their own lives. They fight against society and other factors that try to control and oppress them. These real women succeed every day but when they turn on the TV, they’re losing. Basically, when you make such TV plays, you’re telling women that they are losers and have no real worth in the society, even though many times, it’s the women who are the driving force behind men.”

A post shared by Sarwat Gilani Mirza (@sarwatg) on

Sawrat doesn’t mean to give all the credit to women though. “For society to function effectively, both men AND women are important. Men cannot function without women and women cannot function without men.”

“There was a film I had to say no to recently. It was the perfect film, the kind of script I had been waiting for. But then there are times when I just want to choose motherhood over anything else. But it should be my decision,” she added.

This Pakistani Couple Went Against The Odds & Donated Their Wedding Money To Charity

Living in a country like Pakistan, people are locked in a battle to serve the most guests at a wedding. The more guests you serve, the more respect you gain because a big fat wedding has become a tradition. However, amongst the war came out a young couple who went against the odds.

However, their praiseworthy efforts went unnoticed the whole time. A Pakistani couple decided to break the stereotype last year and did what nobody expected of them. They canceled their dream wedding just to donate all the money to those who are needy.

Shehzaan and Zainab Chunara, a young and bright couple who did the unthinkable. “We began tallying up expenses and started to think it wasn’t worth putting that much money toward something that would only last a few days,” Shehzaan told Today.com. “Something didn’t quite feel right. We wanted to use the money for something that will have a lasting impact.”

The couple donated all the money they had saved up and donated to a well-reputed NGO, the Aghakhan Foundation as they were fond of the charity organization and believed they would do the best with their money. Breaking stereotypes, the couple went out spending every penny of their wedding expense for the sake of charity.

“I’ve seen poverty up close and it’s extremely heart-wrenching,” Shehzaan said. “We felt like it was the right thing to do to give someone an opportunity to have clean water, an education and a roof over their head.”

This surely has to be one of the most delightful and positive things. An act that could not be left unappreciated.

“There aren’t too many comedic roles written for women”, says Mira Sethi and we agree

0

Pakistani films and dramas have come a long way, our films have seen their revival, our dramas are covering social issues however, we still have some shoes to fill.

When Mira Sethi signed her new film with Meenu and Farjad, her comment on it made us think a lot of things:

“There aren’t too many comedic roles written for women, so this was an ‘AHA!’ moment,” she said.

What Mira has said is indeed true, as much as Pakistani dramas are trying to break stereotypes through dramas like Udaari and Khuda Mera Bhi Hai, it is in fact very correct that women are hardly given comedic roles.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BR0VDETggCc/

It seems like that in our society, only a man can be funny. However, that isn’t true. Women can be and are as much funny but the society has already made up its mind about what feature to associate with which gender.

We certainly hope that once the big screen features a woman in a comedy role with Mira’s film debut, it will pave the way for other women to come up and take up comedic roles and step away from the typical damsel in distress.

Saat Din Mohabbat In is a film by Meenu and Farjad’s starring Mahira Khan and Sheheryar Munawar Siddiqui apart from Mira Sethi in a comedic role and is scripted by Fasih Bari Khan. It tells the story of a young man on a quest to find his true love in a crowded Karachi neighbourhood.

Junaid Akram’s recent twitter post reflects the issue of lack of reading culture in Pakistan

0

Junaid Akram is a Pakistani Dubai-based comedian and social commentator who has a huge online following. He often posts videos about his political and social arguments and observations.

He previously posted on his facebook account that he will be getting those books which are not available in Pakistan from Dubai for free and as a gift to Pakistan.

However, it seems, people were not that interested in picking up those books and were only interested in ordering them. Junaid’s tweet reveals to us what happened next:

Apparently, it has been nine days and people still haven’t shown up to pick up the books they asked him to bring.

Junaid further commented on the situation:

His disappointment is indeed real because it is in fact true that reading helps in developing a more intellectual and culturally strong society.

Misbah calls for life-time ban on players involved in PSL spot-fixing scandal

0

Pakistan Test Captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Sunday said that players involved in spot-fixing scandals should not be allowed to play again.

Speaking to the media about the recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot-fixing scandal, Misbah said players involved should be handed a life-time ban so that such incidents do not repeat themselves.

Last week, the Pakistan Cricket Board issued a charge-sheet against opener Shahzaib Hasan  and suspended him over allegations of spot-fixing during the PSL. The unit had previously issued notices of charge to four cricketers — batsmen Nasir Jamshed, Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif and paceman Mohammad Irfan — in the spot-fixing inquiry.

In 2010, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt had agreed to bowl no-balls in return for payment as part of a betting scam in the Lord’s Test against England. The players were suspended provisionally by the International Cricket Council and served jail time.

The bans on the three players ended in 2015 and Amir returned to international cricket in 2016.

“We had almost changed the team’s image with the tour in England and the performance of the team on and off the field. We revived the team but now it feels like out efforts have been wasted,” the captain said.

“We have to rebuild our image,” Misbah added.

The widening scandal has taken some of the sheen off the recently-completed PSL, which was hailed as a step towards restoring international cricket after the final in Lahore passed without incident.

Amazing Pakistani athlete Nadia Nazir dies in road accident

0

Nadia Nazir an excellent athlete died in a hospital at Bahawalnagar on Saturday after she got critically injured in a road accident while returning with her husband Hafiz Muddasir and seven-year-old son Ozaffa after attending a marriage ceremony. Her son also expired on the spot.

She was a very fine athlete with five bronze medals to her name in international competitions. She was also a four-time national champion and a record holder in 400-metre hurdles race since 2007 with a timing of 61.50 seconds which is yet to be surpassed.

According to eye witnesses on Saturday, Nadia’s car collided with a sugarcane trolley near Amin Kot Stop, Chishtiyain. Her son died instantly while Nadia and her husband received serious head injuries. Rescue 1122 shifted her to DHQ Hospital, Bahwalnagar in a critical condition but later she succumbed to injuries.

Nadia was a permanent resident of Mohalla Farid Ganjh and belonged to a lower middle- class family.

During 2010, while practising on the track at the Government Post Graduate College, she complained about the lack of training venues for women athletes. “There is no place for women athletes to do practice, so I have to train alongside males,” she said.

Nadia also competed in the World Championship and Asian Games besides visiting India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Hong Kong and China for athletic events.

Nadia also participated in 2013 National Games and was a clear winner in the100-metre race. Very few people are aware that she was also an excellent football goalkeeper.

She always advocated coaching and training facilities at the grassrooot level such as schools. She often dreamt of a society where female athletes do not have to face political, social, religious and cultural pressures.

Pakistan’s sports have surely lost a gem.

“In today’s age, we need ‘smart artists’ “, says Sajjad Ali

0

The Lahore Music Meet last week saw many musicians and two of them were Sajjad Ali and Azmat Ali who talked about their early struggles and more.

Sajjad Ali mentioned that the ’90s was the era where the artist was faced with the remnants of the old generation’s problems. And for Ali Azmat, his life as an artist had been nothing but struggle — trying to survive, living on his own in an alien city, and eventually reaping some reward.

“For me the music scene happened from 1994 onwards,” he said.

Ali spoke on the new generation and its waywardness when it came to music and its inability to treat it with the seriousness it deserved. He pointed out that music has never been treated as a matter of priority in Pakistan.

It was a long time ago when Sajjad Ali himself directed the music video ‘Babiya’. He said artists were hands-on then too, dabbling in song composition and recording but something was always missing.

He expressed:

“Today, when technology has reached every home and when almost everyone knows how to record, play and sing confidently, why is there still no hit song coming up?”

Ali was of the view that the industry would not grow until it had music written originally for it.

“No industry grows by recycling. The whole process ofcreating, recording and marketing music is a science and no one is giving it to the kids. In today’s age we need ‘smart artists’, who can do all these things.”

Azmat talked about the growing commercial mindset in the music industry and how the creativity is being affected:

“If artists do not recreate and create and explore new styles of music, they will drop like flies,” he said. “You cannot keep doing the same kind of music, you have to move on. You have to stop following trends.”

He said, “I was never in the useless rat race to be number one. Artists are insecure people and perhaps it is that insecurity that keeps me afloat. There were times when I went on the high horse but I have learnt to calm myself down, to become more grounded. After all that ‘high’ doesn’t always remain.”
