Sange Mar Mar To End This Thursday

One of the most appreciated dramas of Pakistan ‘Sange Mar Mar’ is going to end soon. Comprising of an interesting cast ensemble, amazing performances and a gripping storyline, Sange Mar Mar has an interesting take on the social issues and managed to keep the audiences engaged ever since it begun. Sange Mar mar’s last episode will air on Thursday, March 9. Honestly speaking, i’m so attached to this drama that the news of it’s ending made me sad and i’m really going to miss it.

Sange Mar Mar is one of the highest rated dramas and the credit for it’s success goes to stellar performances, beautiful portrayal of every scene and most importantly the writer ‘Mustafa Afridi’ who penned such an impressive piece. So, here’s to the last episode of Sange Mar Mar, let’s hope it’s as surprising as other episodes.

Ustad Fateh Ali Khan remembered by the classical music fraternity

0

Ustad Fateh Ali Khan’s death is indeed a great loss for the music fraternity but a recent gathering turned out to be heartwarming as it shows the music community remembers him and his contribution to classical music.

Karachi Arts Council, Tehzeeb Foundation of Pakistan, MoUSICi and the All Pakistan Music conference arranged the event.

Rustam Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan’s son who himself is a famous classicical singer was also present there.

Rustam talked about how even during the last days of his illness, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan still had a connection with classical music:

“When we were in the hospital, he would ask me to sing and then would hum along with me, even though he was suffering from a severe lung disease.”

The evening also featured a video presentation which shown an old television interview of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and his performance which kept the audience interested and emotional.

After people and the audience paid him their regards, there was a live musical performances session by Rustam Fateh Ali Khan, Imran Ilyas Khan and tabla maestro Ustad Bashir Khan.

We hope that classical music is kept alive here and doesn’t die out eventually with time.

Titli Episode 7 Review – Nayla Versus Kiran!

0

Titli is not only engaging but it is also quite relevant considering the fact that we live in a country in which most people are obsessed with gori rangat. When parents go looking for their son’s rishta, one of the primary requirements is fair complexion. This drama shows that a person’s personality is way more important than their outward appearance. I would say that the director/producers made the perfect choice by choosing Hania Amir to play this role. Although I have said this many times before but I feel the need to appreciate Hania Amir once again for choosing to play a role which is flawed instead of starting her career with a stereotypical role which would have been easier to play and viewers would have loved her instead of hating her. The story of this drama revolves around Nayla more than anyone else but Ahmed too plays a central role in the story. Ahmed is a perfect husband but Nayla continuously keeps on reminding him that he is not good enough. It is true that a spouse can play a major role in either flaring someone’s insecurities or giving them the confidence they need.

Titli Episode 7 Review - Nayla Versus Kiran!

This episode opened with Nayla getting rejected and that is when she decided that it was wise to ask her husband for an apology. I am glad this particular track ended tonight and now the focus will be on Nayla and Ahmed’s track entirely. This latest development proved that Nayla is vain, selfish, impulsive and heartless but she isn’t stupid! She always looks out for her own interests and this time around too, she did just that! Aamir’s wife’s holier-than-thou character is anything but appealing! Although Nayla is a negative person but her character is far more appealing. The actress playing Kiran is also a misfit in the role. Also, the character overall comes across more as nosy and over smart than “perfect”.

The biggest flaw of this drama serial so far is that the characters are black and white but despite this it gives me a reason to look forward to more. Just like Tum Kon Piya, there are times when it has some nice surprises in store for the viewers. Like for example class difference has never been an issue in Ahmed’s family and now their family friends too are more than willing to marry their son off with a girl who comes from a middle class family. Nayla and Ahmed’s track keeps my interest in the drama alive. Zara refused to accept the proposal and I am waiting to find out what her reasons her. It is probably because she does not want her api controlling her life!

I must say that the most interesting aspect of Nayla’s personality is that she has no idea just how wrong she is! Hania Amir and Ali Abbas yet again were the stars of the show tonight. They are doing complete justice to their characters which makes it easier for the viewers to connect to them. The preview of the next episode suggested that Ahmed will finally put his foot down. I am waiting to see how Nayla reacts to that.

How many of you watched this latest episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Arshad Khan, the famous Chai wala might make an appearance at the PSL final

0

Rumour has it that Arshad Khan, the famous chaiwala who gained overnight fame is going to make an appearance at the PSL 2017.

He has decided to set up a tea stall outside of the stadium.

Arshad has also reportedly shown his disappointment over the fact that he was unable to get tickets for the PSL 2017 Lahore Final.

Previously, a very steamy photo shoot featuring Arshad with a female singer became the talk of town. While some cheered for him, others were all critical. They bashed him for earlier stating that he won’t do anything which would defame his family.

There was also news which talked about how Arshad might leave the showbiz but he denied all such rumors.

We are sure that his tea is going to be a hit at the PSL final.

Riz Ahmed and Ali Sethi pay tribute to Qandeel Baloch

0

The Swet shop has released a music video featuring Ali Sethi called “Aaja”. And it has taken the social media by a storm.

The video shows Riz Ahmed and the rapper, heems top their topics to the music of Qawwali and have also played a tribute to the late internet sensation, Qandeel Baloch.

The video shows the Swet shop boys in a get up of Qawwali but they continue to rap. As the video reaches its end, it has a tribute for Qandeel with a soundbyte from one of her videos.

There’s also a dedication to her in order to honour those who try to live freely despite gathering hate for it. The video also hopes to bring the Pakistani and Indian communities together.

The rapping duo has revealed that the video has been purposefully shot in Flushing, Queens and Coney Island, Brooklyn in order to bridge gaps between the Indian and Pakistani communities, the way Qawwali does.

All in all, we think this video is bold and beautiful.

Gul Ahmed’s Ad Parody Is Breaking The Internet

Gone are the days when advertisement agencies would use cheap tactics to attract consumers to buy their products. The advertisements now are out of the context and each of it comes with a different concept. It promises to be something more than just a product ad. The latest one that caught our attention was Gul Ahmed’s #Meinperfecthoon campaign, while some said it’s not original, others praised the concept and thought behind it.

Gul Ahmed highlighted basic problems due to which girls in our society don’t feel confident, the tvc was beautifully executed. We all know, how powerful social media is and no one hold’s back from sharing their opinion on the public platform. However, two guys namely Gul and Ahmed who produce comedy content and do theatre too are sharing their take on the advertisement.

In the parody, Gul and Ahmed can be seen copying the dialogues from the lawn ad and using them sarcastically on things that men often do. Their take on the advertisement is worth a watch because they are trying to highlight the infamous problems of men and showing how they are still perfect in their own way!

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the original Gul Ahmed tvc.

Shaan Shahid’s ‘Yalghaar’ Delayed!

One of the most anticipated film, Yalghaar, that features an all star ensemble cast has been in the pipeline for over three years. The war saga, which was to be released in 2015 has been delayed time and again for a plethora of reasons. It was announced last year that the film will finally release on March 23, 2017.

However, the latest news surrounding Yalghaar is that it has been postponed, once again. A source close to the film confirmed to Instep that it has been delayed for reasons unknown.

“The shoot for the film has completed, everything else is done but we aren’t sure why it’s not coming out,” the source told Instep. “We were informed that it will release on 23rd March but now it is not.”

Yalghaar created a lot of hype ever since it was announced. It is said to be the most expensive films to be made in the history of Pakistani cinema. It stars Shaan Shahid and Humayun Saeed in the lead roles, who’ll face off as protagonist and antagonist. Aside from these two, the film also stars Adnan Siddiqui, Bilal Ashraf, Gohar Rasheed and Armeena Khan in pivotal roles.

The film is yet again postponed for unknown reasons and no new date has been announced. Till then let’s wait for an official statement from the makers. On a lighter note, Bilal Ashraf announced last night that the dubbing of Yalghaar is finally wrapped up.

Jawad Bashir’s next film tells the story of two prostitutes

0

Jawad Bashir, the name usually associated with comedy genre is now clearing the decks for his latest movie and surprisingly, it is not of a pure comedy genre.

The feature film is titled Kammo Parveen.

HIP in Pakistan got into touch with Jawad Bashir regarding his upcoming film and he said that the movie is of an entirely different and unexplored genre in Pakistan.

“Kammo Parveen is a dark comedy, a satire basically. A total indie movie that is based on the bitter truths that we tend to avoid talking about.”

Humari zindagi se rung khatam na hojaye agar hum kisi ko acha banne dain.Kammo Parveen is a movie that deals with this trait of the society.”

Jawad Bashir's next film tells the story of two prostitutes

“There is a love angle in the movie as well, but focus on the selfish side of love, of how possessive love can become and how twisted a lover can be when he/she doesn’t want to share the beloved with anybody else,” he added.

As for the setting of the movie, Jawad said that the film will be based on two people of Manoranjan Bazaar, the red light area in Lahore. It tells a story of two sisters who are prostitutes but are better than thousands of other people put together.

And it turns out that the movie has no item song as Jawad said:

“I did it once, I’m not doing it again. Teri Meri Love Story had an item number because the producers wanted it. Kammo Parveen doesn’t have an item song. It’s a very clean movie- a family movie.”

The movie throws light on a very serious issue and subject and will entertain as well as educate the masses.

The cast has not been finalised yet but the movie is mostly likely to release by the end of this year.

Mahira Khan has 3 upcoming movies

0

Mahira Khan, Pakistan’s favorite diva who made us all proud by coming opposite the glorious SRK has 3 movies lined up in Pakistan too.

Nazr e Bad Episode 11 & 12 Review – Intense & Gripping!

Ohkay so, these two episodes of Nazr e Bad were interesting once again. I am actually quite glad that so far the team of Nazr e Bad has succeeded in keeping things to the point & the focus from the message & the purpose of the drama hasn’t been shifted. It has become one such drama that I actually look forward to every single week & knowing that we have 2 episodes is an added bonus. I must say, the way they have elaborated all kinds of human emotions is commendable because somehow, this is something which helps the viewers in relating to all the characters quite easily.

Shahista finally saved the day. Even though she did what she should have done but I so wish before leaving she had informed Nusrat about her intuition regarding Parvez. Shahista not only apologized to Nusrat but spoke to Aftab too as she knew that she had to make things right. It was good to see that Shahista took the entire blame on herself because in reality, she was solely responsible for initiating the misunderstandings between Aftab & Maham. Nusrat’s reaction was once again quite believable, it takes time to forget all the wrongdoings & it also takes a lot of time in forgiving people who are responsible for those wrongdoings as well. Nusrat didn’t promise Shahista that she would forgive her because she definitely has had such a hard time because of her & seeing her only daughter suffer has definitely made Nusrat a lot bitter against her in laws & she definitely has a reason behind that.

Finally, it was so good to see Aftab treating Maham with love & respect because he understood that he was at fault & he was unable to keep all those promises that he made to Maham before & after their marriage. Salma really needs to back off, it is actually burdensome to see her getting away with anything & everything that she says against Maham. I really think Aqmal needs to give her a reality check because now that Aftab has gotten married, there is no other option left for Salma than to just accept this marriage. It was disturbing to see that Salma wasn’t a fan of the idea that Aftab should apologize to Maham because according to her, this is not something that husbands should do. Anyways, Aftab didn’t pay heed to what his mother said & followed the advice of his father & this time around, it was good to see that Aftab not only decided to make things right, he even acted upon his words & gave Maham the comfort zone she needed.

I am not a fan of Abeera/Ahmer track. Even though it is understandable that cousins who share the same roof do develop some feelings for each other & the drama-makers needed another track just to fill up the episodes but I would hate to see Ahmer creating a havoc in Nusrat’s life that too because of Abeera. Yes, Abeera is innocent & she has nothing to do with what Almas has always felt against Nusrat & now what her brother Parvez is doing but the fact still remains that Nusrat is not on good terms with her family, so if Ahmer will put his mother in an awkward position because of Abeera would definitey be unfair for her as she already has endured a lot.

The entire scenario where someone spotted Parvez carrying out the black magic rituals was quite interesting. Even though I know he is not going to get busted so easily & that too in such an early stage of the drama but still, I really wished he actually faced the consequences for his sins. Looks like Parvez has found himself an avid & blind follower, that is why she is ready to take so much of risk to save him. Even though what they showed was hard to grasp but this is the fact that these days, jealousy can force people to turn against their own siblings, that is why Parvez’s follower (I don’t think her name has been mentioned so far) is not even guilty of the fact that her sister has become a cancer patient due to the black magic as all that she is able to see is dream turning into a reality where she will get to be with the guy she loves, who actually was about to get married to her sister.

I must say, the scene where they showed that someone (Parvez in this case) dug the grave to get the bones was so disturbing but was based on the reality. I must say, the team of Nazr e Bad deserves to be commended for taking the risk of unveiling the darkest of deeds these sick minded black magicians do in order to carry out their rituals. I think this is for the first time that we are actually getting to see a drama which has showcased the reality of these black magicians & the lengths they go to, in such a convincing manner. Also, a little detail that I have noticed about Parvez is that ever since he has attained this knowledge, he has found this strange sort of confidence & that is why his entire attitude & body language has changed. Parvez knows that he is capable of doing anything, that is why he feels empowered & to some extent complacent. This is something which has been conveyed phenomenally by Azfar Rehman so he deserves a special mention for showcasing different shades of Parvez’s personality & his journey so far!

Maham might think that now everything is going to be perfect because she has seen such a nice change in Aftab’s attitude but little does she know that her problems are far from being over because Parvez is still after her. Seeing the blood streaming through the faucet & then misplacing the envelop were just a few attempts done by Parvez to cause some rift between Aftab & Maham but it is good that Aftab understands. Even these are the things that have forced Aftab to do some thinking but none of them has thought about the fact that all these mishaps are not coincidental but are rather planned by some evil sick soul who is after them. I think Maham should have told Nusrat about the blood in her bathroom because I am sure Nusrat would’ve understood that this is not something that just happens coincidentally!

Overall, these two episodes were quite intersting & I had a great time watching it, including those scary bits. :/ All the actors have been performing so realistically that it looks like real life characters are facing all of this & are going through such mishaps in their lives. Sara Khan makes Maham’s ordeal seem real. Azfar Rehman is quite convincing as Parvez, even though in the beginning I found his acting pretty decent but now this new face that Parvez has attained has been portrayed quite convincingly by Azfar Rehman. The supporting characters are doing their job really well too & it is safe to say that Nazr e Bad is a complete package that you can tune to because it had a bit of everything, drama, emotions, thriller etc. I can’t wait for the next episodes already. Please share your thoughts about these two episodes of Nazr e Bad.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Titli Episodes 1 to 6 Review – An Ultimate Guilty Pleasure!

Writer: Samina Ejaz
Director: Ahmed Bhatti
Producer: Gold Bridge Media
Schedule: Every Friday at 8pm on Urdu1

We have seen many dramas dealing with problems relating to marital life but most often these plays show a compromising wife and a husband who takes his wife for granted. A woman is always shown as a victim in such scenarios. Drama serial Titli is based on a true story which shows that sometimes men can be victims of marital abuse as well. The fast pace of the play, convincing performances and an entertaining storyline which keeps you looking forward to more makes me tune into this drama every week ever since it has gone on air. Choosing to review a drama which you consider a guilty pleasure is not an easy decision to make but it is also double the fun when you discuss every episode with viewers who are also enjoying watching it.

Titli’s plot isn’t too intricate but it is definitely interesting, relatable and unpredictable at times. Nayla (Hania Amir) is not your usual heroine; she is flawed, she is extremely selfish and shallow, someone most viewers would love to hate!! Right from the first episode Nayla was shown as a girl who was free like a bird (butterfly?), she believed only in making herself happy and couldn’t even imagine sacrificing her happiness for someone else. She, however, had to make the biggest compromise of her life when she had to get married to Ahmed (Ali Abbas) who belonged to a rich family but was not good-looking. Ahmed has been shown as a talented, intelligent and organized man who is the CEO of his company but he does not have the confidence to take an active part in the meetings or presentations because he does not like his physical appearance. Although he is surrounded by people who love him but even then he has a low self-esteem. Ahmed is an extremely likeable character. You feel for him every step of the way and you understand why someone like him would be willing to put up with all the insults which a man wouldn’t normally tolerate. Ahmed’s parents are also educated, refined and modest people who don’t even know how to deal with a person like Nayla.Titli’s plot basically gives the message that a person physical appearance does not determine his or her personality which is another reason why Hania Amir was the perfect choice for playing Nayla’s role.

Titli Episodes 1 to 6 Review - An Ultimate Guilty Pleasure!

Nayla and her sister Zara are complete opposites but Nayla’s mother sometimes is shown saying things which suggest that Nayla might take after her. It was difficult to make out whether Nayla really liked her cousin or just wanted to avoid getting married to Ahmed when she showed the desire of marrying him. So far it does seem like Nayla is incapable of loving anyone except herself. Although Nayla has all the traits of a selfish and negative person but she is the highlight of every episode. Watching someone like Hania Amir who has a very innocent face, play a role which is anything but innocent with such persuasion proves what a remarkable actress she is. There are also times when Nayla appears to be more naive than negative. One of the primary reasons for tuning into this show initially was watching Hania Amir on the small screen because I was beyond impressed by her performance in Janaan. Watching her experiment with a rather unusual role proved to be a pleasant surprise. Ali Abbas is another actor who never disappoints you. He is versatile and he breathes life into every character he plays. His pronunciation, dialogue delivery and body language are always on point.

In the latest episode Ahmed found out about Nayla’s guy friend but it seems like the dynamics of their relationship are not going to change even after this. Amir’s wife will be another addition to the family who will fit in perfectly and Nayla would be the only misfit in the family. The fact that everyone else except Nayla is so picture-perfect sometimes makes it difficult to relate to this aspect of the story, other than that Titli has my undivided attention and I am enjoying watching it.

If you are looking for something typical yet interesting to watch then you should tune into Titli but if you are looking for something more serious and meaningful then Titli is not the play for you!

How many of you are following this play? Do share your thoughts about it.

Sang e Marmar Episode 27 Review – Heartbreaking!

Phew! What a heart wrenching episode of Sang e Marmar. I remember it was weeks ago when I last cried while watching this drama but once again in this episode, I cried at Shireen’s ordeal & Shameem’s apology. It was painful to see a harmless, selfless soul going through so much but finally, the moment arrived when her dignity was restored, it took a long time & it took almost everything away from Shireen but still, I am sure a lot of viewers must’ve sighed with relief while watching this episode of Sang e Marmar tonight!

So, Aurang played a game with his father where he promised him one thing but did what he deemed right. Let me get this out of the way, I am totally cool with the fact that Aurang & Palwasha got married because they both ‘loved’ each other. Aurang deserved to make his life decisions so he did because Gulistan gave him the right to after losing so much, so it seemed justified that he went ahead & did something which he most certainly wanted to.

I felt actually quite uneasy every time I heard someone blame Shireen for being characterless, like they would speak so casually yet with so much of surety about it as if they themselves had seen her with Gohar. The conversation between Zari Mami & Gul Begum made a lot of sense, like even they understood that everything that Pari was enduring was basically because of the lies that she fabricated & Durkhane is also aware of another lie that Pari told where she linked Shireen’s name with Gohar’s only to fool her husband. I am actually quite glad that Kaleemullah proved that he loves Durkhane, even though he was shocked at first but the way he took her to Gulistan’s home to put an end to this vicious past showed that he was supporting his wife & most probably forgave her for her past mistakes.

Sang e Marmar Episode 27 Review - Heartbreaking!

Shireen had to accept everything, she had to take the responsibility once again because she has lost the hope, she has lost everything, she has nothing to look forward to, so that is why, Shireen thought she had nothing to lose, so it would be better to put all the speculations to rest & just because she had no energy left to defend herself, more so, she had no reason left to defend herself, she accepted everything, even those things that she was never responsible for. Just because Shireen took the blame on herself, that’s when everyone including Gulistan accepted Aurang’s hasty decision of marrying Palwasha because if Shireen hadn’t done that, I am sure Gulistan would have supported her & had disapproved of Aurang’s decision. At that moment, it was actually quite amusing that no one was bothered about such a huge step that Aurang took because they all were occupied by the thoughts of what Shireen just confessed. Bano who was looking for an opportunity got a little more confidence to display her barbarianism because she saw that this time around, even Shameem was not going to come & defend Shireen. Gulistan stood there shocked while Shameem for the first time let her emotions get the better of her because by the end of the day, the fact still remains that she has lost her two sons & she still hasn’t recovered from that loss.

The way everyone sat in the room while Bano was beating Shireen mercilessly left a bad taste in the mouth but what made me raise my eyebrow was how MEESNI Palwasha stopped her MEESNA Aurang from going outside & stopping Bano from hitting Shireen? What’s with the insecurity now? Palwasha has gotten married to the love of her life, so can’t she be that much compassionate to at least feel for a girl who is being assaulted so brutally? Well done MEESNI Palwasha for proving that you are just as heartless as your brother Torah!

Sang e Marmar Episode 27 Review - Heartbreaking!

I really want to feel that just because Torah saw Shireen in a similar situation that he saw his mother in when he was 11 years old, he proposed marriage to her because he felt for her but then again, is admi se achay ki umeed rakhi nahi ja sakti, so I am sure this is another move of his which he is planning for in order to bring Gulistan down because obviously he has to get back at him as Gulistan insulted him by showing him his right place. I really want to see if Torah’s secret will ever be revealed that he is the reason why Saif ur Rehman went to that place where Gohar was meeting Durkhane & got killed eventually because more than being interested in what will happen to Torah, I am looking forward to what Palwasha’s reaction would be & if she will ever feel sorry for Gulistan & Aurang’s family, or in worst case, if she will gracefully take the beating of anyone for being a sister of a murderer responsible for the deaths of two family members; Gohar & Safiullah?

Shameem’s guilt & her apology to Shireen was heart-wrenching, it was portrayed so beautifully & convincingly. Shameem has been paying the price for no reason, she has been paying the price for being Gulistan’s wife & that’s it. It was so heart-breaking to see 2 broken, emotionally shattered women consoling each other because they can’t do anything else. Honestly speaking, I was actually wishing that someone would get Bano admitted to a mental hospital but seeing the signs of guilt in her made me realize that she is a human being, like a proper human being who can experience emotions other than hatred & bitterness, so it was good for a change.

This episode was absolutely beautiful, even though in the beginning I wasn’t feeling it much but as it progressed, it reminded me of all those previous episodes that I have enjoyed & absolutely loved. The preview of the next episode promises a lot more drama because Torah & Gulistan are going to face each other, to be honest, at this stage I am not too happy with what Torah is doing & I want him to get exposed really bad. Sania Saeed, once again, what a beautifullllllllllll performance, I am speechless. Kubra Khan, another convincing performance. Kaif Ghaznavi & Uzma Hassan, haha they are the stars of this show because their characters are going to be hated for such a long time but it takes a lot of courage to play such characters & make all the viewers hate them, such convincing performances & such phenomenal actors I must say. Masroor Paras, another phenomenal actor who has elaborated each & every thought that is running through Torah’s mind through such perfect & minute expressions! Amazing actors! The direction of this episode was spot on. Can’t wait for the next episode already. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Sang e Marmar.

Anwar Maqsood Writes A Film For Asim Jofa

Urdu writer Anwar Maqsood, who has given us some super hit theatre productions in recent times (Pawney 14 August, Sawa 14 August, Siachen) is gearing up to write two films this year. He recently revealed that one of the scripts he’s currently working on is for a film that will be made by well known businessman, Asim Jofa.

When Instep contacted Jofa to confirm the news and find out about the film, he responded in the affirmative.

“Yes, I’m making a film and Anwar sahab is writing it.”

However he refrained from revealing any details regarding the film and said that he wants to keep it under wraps at the moment, given the uncertainty of events in the country.

“I don’t want to disclose it right now as I’m not sure how things turn out to be,” Jofa shared. “I can just tell you that Anwar sahab is writing the first film of his life for me and you’ll love it. It’s going to be a masterpiece.”

We’re surely waiting for this once since it’s written by Anwwar Maqsood who is known for witty and flair content.

Tanzeela Mazhar resigns following PTV harassment case

0

Tanzeela Mazhar, anchor at Pakistan Television (PTV) has resigned from her job and post after authorities showed lack of interest in responding to her harrassment complaint.

Mazhar mentioned in her resignation which she also tweeted, said:

“Things were made very difficult for me and I was facing huge psychological torture every day. PTV is being hijacked by perverts. I did my bit to improve things but moral corruption won over morals.”

In January, she had filed a complaint regarding harassment that she was being harassed by Agha Masood Shorish, PTV Current Affairs Director.

She had also recently tweeted about how it is useless to pursue a lost cause considering the society we live in and the only option on her hands is to resign from her post.

It shows from her resignation that the PTV management would rather save the reputation of one individual at a higher post and not address such a serious issue regarding women.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs.

Pakistani student’s documentary selected at Cannes Film Festival

0

Pakistan has a lot of talented people and it is moments like these which make us realize the true potential of our youth.

A student from SZABIST, Shahrukh Khan’ short documentary called What  a waste has been selected for the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival 2017.

He made the documentary for one of his final year course called Documentary Vision. It tells the story of gold-panners who work in the jewelry market of Saddar in Karachi.

Pakistani student's documentary selected at Cannes Film Festival

The story is about an ancient profession that is passed down from generation to generation in an ever growing urban landscape.

Khan spoke to the Express Tribune and said:

“I am speechless. It’s a dream come true for me. We had our documentary vision course last semester and I submitted a draft of the documentary. But I continued to work on it until this February so I could send it to Cannes”.

“My instructor was the one who motivated me to go for this topic. Then I sought guidance from Shehram Mokhtar, who is currently in the US, via Facebook”, added Khan.

Pakistani student's documentary selected at Cannes Film Festival

He finished the documentary last month where Moiz Faisal was the director of photography, Salman Ahmed was the music composer and Ammar Alee Danish was the editor.

The student had found his inspiration in British documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia,Wong Kar Wai and Christopher Nolan.

When asked about whether he will go and attend the festival, he had to say:

“I can’t afford to, but I will have to look for any sponsorship. If I get a chance to go, I definitely will”.

We are surely proud of this talented student and wish him all the best!

Zahid Ahmed’s Dil-e-Janaam is a good mid-week drama

Production houses in Pakistani dramas are never holding back from adding more dramas to the already crowded tv screens, and if interesting we don’t mind watching them either. However, love triangles or in some cases love rectangles (pun intended) are very common in our plays because writers don’t mind churning them out nor we as a audience do because if not all then most of the times they do sound interesting. Hum TV’s new drama Dil-e-Janaam begin last night. Having seen the teasers, i was already waiting for it and had some good expectations from this one. Starring Zahid Ahmed, Zhalay Sarhadi, Hina Altaf in the lead roles with Imran Ashraf in a pivotal role, the play surely had a good content and made me look forward to it. Zahid Ahmed’s last drama Mera Kya Kasoor Tha on Geo TV didn’t did well in terms of ratings nor had an interesting story line so many of his fans might have been waiting for this drama to see him casting his magic again. Dil e Janaam’s highlight is its star-studded cast and an engaging story line. However, the writer Seema Ghazal is known for scripting family sagas which are most often not so popular too. But, the drama had already build some expectations and to what seen, first episode was quite decent and good. It was well-paced with all the characters introduced in a right manner. It’s a story of a jolly and bubbly girl Eshal (Hina Altaf) who’s marriage is fixed with her cousin Shavaiz (Zahid Ahmed) and is really happy because she’s getting married to a man whom she loves. She has a friend Haris (Imran Ashraf) who likes her and keeps throwing hints, which she never understands. Haris’ feeling for Eshal will surely have an impact on how the story unfolds in the future. However, Shavaiz loves his business partner Asma (Zhalay Sarhadi) and is not willing to marry Eshal. Shavaiz is a kind of an ideal man who is rich, handsome and has a soft corner for people he loves but is quite too. However, Asma loves Shavaiz but is a practical woman. Later on, Shavaiz tries to explain his mother and even tries to speak to Eshal in order to break the marriage, but fails both times and chooses the easy path instead by marrying Asma and bringing her home. It’s no secret that our society is filled with cousin marriages and it happens quite often too. And in Eshal and Shavaiz’s case, they were engaged when they were kids which in some cases does leads to an unexpected result. As they grew up, Eshal falls for Shavaiz and he on the other hand falls for someone else whom he finds more compatible. Zahid Ahmed as Shavaiz was brilliant and it was a delight to see him in this role. Hina Altaf, was in-short really good, she’s improving with every drama but this isn’t the best she could do, her acting skills should be exploited to get the best out of her and i hope that happens in the coming episodes. However, at times she looked too young to be paired up with Zahid Ahmed, some more her character is really jolly and he seems to be quite mature, so this pairing is a bit doubtful. Coming to Zhalay Sarhadi, she managed to do complete justice to her role despite of less screen time. Shavaiz’s mother is the same woman who is playing the role of Armaan’s mother in Muqabil and i’m pleased to say she did spare our ears in this first episode. Jokes part, all the characters were quite convincing and easily relatable. Despite of having a cliched story line, Dil-e-Janaam looks promising mainly because of the interpretation of the whole scenario. Besides the main characters, the cast also includes Usman Peerzada, Saba Faisal, Shaheen Khan, Shameem Zafar Hilaly and Anwar Iqbal. Directed by Fahim Burney and produced by MD productions, Dil-e-Janaam is good for mid-week entertainment; it airs every Wednesday at 8 pm, on Hum TV. How many of you liked this play? Do share your thoughts! Rimsha Butt

Sheheryar Munawar: Mahira Khan is a close friend, it’s always fun working with her

In an era where Pakistani cinema is experiencing higher number of films, more filmmakers are experimenting with budding actors in order to provide fresh and promising content. Sheheryar Munawar is one such celebrity who started of as a model and went on to grab eyeballs with his acting and charming personality.

He made his acting debut with HUM TV’s drama Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley, in which he played the character of a deaf and dumb boy, Sheheryar has been the heartthrob ever since he blew us away with his performance in Ho Mann Jahan.

Currently shooting for his upcoming super hero film ‘The Ghazi Attack’, Sheheryar is also gearing up to star in Meenu-Farjad’s ‘Saat Din Mohabbat In’ opposite Mahira Khan.

We knew that his fan’s must be waiting to know about his upcoming projects, so we bring you the conversation he had with Instep, where he reveals more about his and Mahira’s character and the film.

“It’s a project that I’m really excited about since Menu and Farjad have written a funny, yet layered script,” he tells Instep. “It’s very demanding and challenging, since it’s a complete transformation for me, as well as Mahira. I was really scared initially while going through the script, so it was comforting to know that I had a friend on board who I could discuss it with.”

When asked to comment on his character, Sheheryar replied, “It’s completely different from the work I’ve done in films so far. He’s very loveable, but not your typical-macho-heroic kind,” reveals Munawar. “Arhaan in Ho Mann Jahaan was more of a bad boy and Zain of Project Ghazi is a very manly superhero, so this time around the character I portray is a lot more sensitive.”

“To begin with, both the films they’ve made belong to parallel cinema unlike this one. To be able to do a film like that, one needs to be a strong storyteller and I feel that that’s their forte,” he says thoughtfully. “As an actor, the first thing you look for in a director is whether they’re able to tell a story and then of course, their technical capabilities and I feel they’re very sound when it comes to that.”

Elaborating his viewpoint further, Munawar notes, “Even across the border, the biggest of films are being made by filmmakers who once made films independently such as Rahul Dholakia and Anurag Kashyap.

Now you see huge production houses investing in their films and stars wanting to work with them. People have started realizing that gone are the days when you could show pretty faces and have a hit; people now hope to take something home every time they pay to watch a film.”

Munawar, who will share the screen with Mahira Khan once more in Meenu-Farjad’s next, says that working with the actress is great fun and describes her as a “close friend”.

“Even between takes, I tend to not get distracted and stay in character, whereas Mahira snaps out of it as soon the director calls cut. That’s how our approach slightly differs, but it’s always fun working with her,” he tells Instep, adding that he’d like to adapt Mahira’s easy-going attitude. “Even when you’re trying to improvise, it is nice working with friends since you share a certain chemistry with them that eventually shows on screen.”

Currently in the process of preparing for his next, Sheheryar admits that he’s become a method actor. “I believe in spending time with your script, rehearsing, living your character and eventually getting into it. I would rather be a hard-working actor than an actor with a natural flair,” he disclosed. “The character I portray in this film lives in a completely different world from mine. So when you take up something like this, you try forgetting yourself, your own habits and body language, giving birth to new character.”

Munawar divulged that after having played a gray character in his debut flick, he had started observing its facets in his own personality. Hence, he chooses to take up only one project at a time. “That’s why I choose not to do a lot of work. With the Vision Factory, I always have work going on behind the camera as well. However, when you’re preparing for a film, you need to shut yourself out and allow changes in your behavior to happen. Once a project ends, one needs to consciously make an effort and get back to the real world.”

Apart from his anticipated acting assignments, Sheheryar is also developing scripts with his team at the Vision Factory for two feature films. Both of which, he explains are “mindful, light-hearted films.” However, he is quick to point out that they are not romantic-comedies. “To make a film in the subcontinent, one needs to add the element of romance to it. Rom-com, however, is a more generalized and weird genre. I feel that they are a lot more layered as films.”

On a concluding note, Sheheryar points out the obstacles an independent production house faces in Pakistan. “The reason I began production was to make good films. We had planned to start a project early this year. However, it has been pushed to fall. Being independent producers in Pakistan is very difficult. The entire system presently, is very unfair.”

Rabi Pirzada: Bollywood, especially Salman Khan Is Ruining Our Pakistani Youth!

Lahore, which was once considered as the hub of Pakistani entertainment is apparently losing its magic due to the Pakistani audience chosing to watch Bollywood films instead. Therefore, Rabi and her colleague Naseem Vicky said that they are taking the initiative to make an interesting film with Pakistani values, and get back the audience to watch native films and they did managed to take a dig at Bollywood.

The duo made the announcement during a press conference at Lahore Press Club.

“Every other film released in Bollywood happens to be about crime or some criminal activities, especially films of Salman Khan. My question is, what are Indian film-makers teaching the youth? It seems like they are just promoting crime,” said Rabi Pirzada.

“There was a time when Pakistani cinema was at its peak, making films with moral lessons and plots highlighting social ethics. We were educating the society through our films but Bollywood has changed all of that,” she added further.

Naseem supported her thoughts and said, “We decided we will produce a story that carries a special lesson for Pakistani children. There is no shortage of talent in our country. The revival of our film industry has started and Rabi and I wish it to flourish here in Lahore once again. There is a dire need for us to produce films that attract viewers and that is what we will try our best to do with our joint venture. We will try to bring the audience back to cinema. You see, while Lollywood might have come alive again, it is still yet to produce a feature film that sheds light on the Pakistani identity. I am hopeful that in the coming months, Lahore will become the hub of local film-making again.”

After Saba Qamar’s comments on Salman Khan going viral, Rabi’s comments have already reached the neigbhours and we wonder how will they react to this statement.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed at a Kapoor wedding and here are the photos

Tensions between India and Pakistan have been on the rise since the Uri attacks and the artist community has suffered a lot due to it. While, Bollywood banned Pakistan actors in India, we banned their movies.

It seems, however, that the Kapoor family doesn’t approve of this ban on Pakistani artists because Rahat Fateh Ali Khan recently performed at a Kapoor wedding in Abu Dhabi.

The destination wedding was for Arjun Kapoor’s cousin, Akshay Marwah. The wedding was star studded and our very own, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performed at the Sangeet ceremony.

Apparantly, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sang his famous hits like Main Jahan Rahun, Afreen, Jag Ghomeya and other hits at the event.

The Kapoor family also uploaded the event’s photos which made it to the social media.

We wonder when the tensions between both the artists community will be lessened so that once again, it gets proven that art is beyond borders!

Sajal Ali & Adnan Siddiqui To Fly To Thailand Instead Of India For Mom’s Shooting

The news of Sajal Ali and Adnan Siddiqui going to India for the shooting Boney Kapoor’s ‘Mom’, had caused an uproar in political circles of India. Earlier reports stated that the last round of shooting for Mom was to be held in Delhi, India but the ban on Pakistani celebrities in the neighboring country didn’t let it happen.

Earlier in an interview to Instep, Adnan Siddiqui revealed that he will only travel to India if there are no security issues.

“I never said that I won’t go to India unless they assure security. Considering the sensitivity of the current situation between Pakistan and India, I just said that since they are calling us there, they must have thought of security arrangements,” said Adnan, who’ll play the role of Sridevi’s husband in ‘Mom’.

However, latest reports suggest that Mom will be filmed in Bangkok instead of India.

Producer Boney Kapoor told Bollywood Hungama:

“Whatever we shot with the Pakistani artists was before the unofficial ban. There is no question of bringing them into India now. We are shooting the remaining portion of the film in Thailand”

Another source also confirmed the news:

“The team of the film would be leaving for Bangkok in the first week of March and are expected to wrap up shooting the song and an important scene for the film that kicked off in March last year in two days”

Directed by Ravi Udyawar, Mom will have Sajal Ali and Adnan Sidiqui in pivotal roles. The shooting for the last spell will commence soon.

Geo Kahani’s ‘Naagin’ – Advancing or Deteriorating?

In Pakistan’s drama industry, content is the first thing that matters, if the content of a show is strong enough to hold the interest of the viewers, then it holds the potential to be successful. Since, we are finally witnessing some good dramas, the expectations are rising more and we are seeking new and different concepts. Where at one hand audiences are currently seeing a witty black magic concept in Nazr-e-bad which is amazing and is completely close to reality, on the other hand they’ll be soon witnessing something which may not be the best we all had expected.

Before i continue, i’d say that i hadn’t known about this drama until one of my readers shared it with me and thanks to the reader for shedding light on this one. Anyways, coming back to the point, viewers are currently biting their nails off as they root for some amazing conceptual dramas airing on-screen and seems like after covering some social causes, the dramas are now heading towards a completely different route. Don’t know what i’m talking about? Let’s get this straight, viewers wouldn’t have to watch India’s Naagin because we’ll be having our very own Naagin!

Geo Kahani’s upcoming drama ‘Naagin’ is based on the concept which most of you will be familiar to. Throughout the forthcoming show Naagin, the makers will be revisiting the mythology that Pakistani audiences would have seen in Indian dramas. “Naagin’ is penned by Ifftikhar Iffi and directed by Shah Bilal. So, what is it going to be? A Naagin (shape-shifting snake) transforming into a woman with perfect make-up, mind you, in the blink of an eye!

In recent time, dramas like Sange Mar Mar and Udaari have revolutionized our dramas and none of them has a concept which was derived from any other drama and it isn’t as simple saying that content is an all-time best because the industry is still in the transition phase. However, Naagin is a clear Indian borrowed concept, it might not be a copy but is highly inspired and the concept is something which has nothing to do with our society in particular. Dramas like these work in India because they provide a kind of concept which most of Indian audiences find connectable because these are mythological facts believed by them. However, even though things of this sort are not a part of our country, they still might gain higher ratings because this will surely turn out to be high on drama for the audiences who find the Indian version interesting.

Geo Kahani is starving for ratings and bringing in a concept like this is a prove of it. These kind of concepts tend to grab in the most audiences and they’re going to try it on the local audiences with local content. I see some popular names attached to this play, entering the supernatural genre is nothing wrong but if doing it why not do it with something completely original!

Are you looking forward to Geo Kahaani’s ‘Naagin’? Do share your thoughts!
