Saieen Zahoor is one of the legendary talents that came out of Pakistan. His story is both unique and inspiring. Born in a rural household, Saieen Zahoor started singing at the age of seven. He would sing at the shrines of sufis where he met Raunka Ali from Patiala Gharana of music and trained under him. He shot to fame when he was awarded Voice of The Year in 2006 by BBC.
Saieen Zahoor has given countless hits which are evergreen and will remain in our heads forever. He helped produce the album of 2007 film Khuda Ke Liye. His Allah Hoo is still ringing in everyone’s years after all these years.
Saieen Zahoor was performing at a concert in London this week where he passed out suddenly. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment and diagnosis. Doctors said that it was probably due to fatigue and he was under observation. According to latest reports, he is stable but has not gained consciousness yet. Further checkup is also being done for now.

The music industry in Pakistan like everything else has gone through many ups and downs. The worst thing however has been the copyright laws or lack thereof and how Pakistani music gets stolen frequently by India and India does not even bother to give any credit to the original artists. From legends as NFAK to the younger lot, all Pakistani singers have faced this time and again and it looks like this time we will see a Sonu Nigam song which is apparently not his own. Sonu Nigam just sang a song for T-Series in collaboration with DJ Sheizwood titled Sun Zara.
Apparently Sun Zara is a copy of Pakistani singer Omer Nadeem’s song Aye Khuda. He released that song 14 years ago and it was available on YouTube to get copied.

Pakistani singer and Overload front man Farhad Humayun passed away on Tuesday, the band confirmed in a social media post. The news about the singer and record producer’s death was announced on the official social media page of Overload, as the band requested fans to pray for the departed soul.
“The magnificent Farhad Humayun left us for the stars this morning. Stoic in the face of challenges, uncompromising in his values, generous to a fault, witty as hell! Fadi was far too ahead of his time, both in spirit and art,” the post read. “He would want us to celebrate his life, so we request his family, friends and fans to honour him and say a prayer for him today,” it continued. “We can almost hear him say these words by David Bowie: ‘I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring’. Godspeed our gentle giant and thank you for creating a Riot!”
Humayun’s cause of death was not revealed by the band. However, the singer had revealed in 2018 that he was diagnosed with brain tumor and was getting a surgery done for it. Very few people know that Farhad Humayun was son of veteran Pakistani actress Navid Shahzad.
Fans and celebrities took to their social media after hearing about the singer’s death to pay tribute to him and to pray for his eternal peace.
Brooklyn-based Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab on Sunday, made a history after she bagged the Grammy award for her song “Muhabbat” in the Best Global Performance category. Not only this, Arooj Aftab was also nominated for the Best New Artist category.
Arooj is known for her mesmerizing voice in ancient Sufi traditions with inflections of folk, jazz and minimalism. Other than vocalist, Arooj is a music producer and composer who got her training from the Berklee College of Music. Arooj gained recognition after former US president Barack Obama included the track ‘Mohabbat’ on his 2021 summer favorites list. Arooj while expressing her feelings on the stage at the 64th Grammy awards, mentioned that “I feel like this category in of itself has been insane… it should this be called yacht party category. I made [this record] about everything that broke me and put me back together. Thank you for listening to it and making it yours.”

Dr Nabiha Ali Khan & Haris Khokhar
Dr Nabiha Ali Khan has become a relevant name in Pakistani showbiz since she started appearing in several shows, and she largely advocates for men’s rights. She got married to her friend Haris Khokhar last year in a lavish ceremony, and just months later, Nabiha shared on Fiza Ali’s Ramadan transmission that her marriage is in trouble. Dr Nabiha Ali Khan and Fiza Ali turned into a dramatic reveal, and their videos went viral all over social media. Many people were seen mimicking and trolling the overdramatisation.

Fiza Ali & Mishi Khan
The curious case of Dr Nabiha Ali Khan-Haris Khokhar-Fiza Ali turned uglier when many celebrities started trolling how dramatically this was dealt despite being revealed in a Ramadan transmission. Mishi Khan is also among the artists who thought the whole fiasco was unnecessary and even trolled Fiza Ali’s reactions. Mishi Khan and Fiza Ali have since been calling out each other back and forth, and they are not on talking terms.
Another friendship in Pakistani showbiz came to an end for unknown reasons. The controversy unravelled when Fiza Ali suddenly made a video criticising Nida Yasir after her blunder about food delivery people. Things went out of hand when Nida’s husband, Yasir Nawaz, called out Fiza for targeting his wife. After the Fiza-Nabiha controversy, Nida Yasir also tried to share how she will never do such a thing in Ramadan, and Fiza Ali was again pissed off and criticised Nida Yasir.
Javeria Saud & Yumna Zaidi
Javeria Saud is an actress and host who remained in the news throughout Ramadan this year for her inappropriate transmission techniques. She was seen making fun of people’s medical conditions and taking staged calls for TRPs. Things went out of hand when she ended up making ageist comments against superstar Yumna Zaidi. While showing a baby picture of Yumna, which did not even belong to her, Javeria stated, ” This is someone who has been trying for ages to make a mark, and she has recently become famous.” Other actresses jumped to Yumna’s defence while she herself clarified that the baby girl in that particular picture was not even her.
Another big age war took Pakistani showbiz by storm when Atiqa Odho advised Fahad Mustafa on Hasna Mana Hai to star opposite heroines his age. He felt offended and asked Atiqa to get surgeries if she wanted to work as his heroine. Humayun Saeed was standing beside Fahad when he made this comment. Later, Humayun ended up calling Nadia Khan and Atiqa Odho his “elder sisters”, and Nadia Khan trolled him in return. The internet was divided into camps throughout the whole controversy, and Atiqa and Fahad buried the hatchet by apologising to each other.
Resham & Deedar
Resham and Deedar decided to bring old Pakistani showbiz, aka Lollywood drama, to mainstream media. It all started when Deedar called Resham a negative person who had negatively impacted other people’s lives. She said that Resham has destroyed people, while Resham called Deedar a nobody, famous just because of her sister.

Ali Zafar & Meesha Shafi
The biggest controversy in the last decade in Pakistani showbiz is the harassment/defamation case of Ali Zafar and Meesha Shafi. The duo has been fighting this out in court for over 8 years now. Ali’s defamation case finally had a verdict when he won, and Meesha Shafi was directed to pay 5 million PKR to him. Meesha’s harassment case is still pending, and the verdict once again divided people into two camps.
Rajab Butt – Eman Fatima & Zulqarnain Sikandar
Rajab Butt and Eman Fatima have been publicly fighting since he announced his intention to divorce her on a podcast. The couple share a son who has also been dragged multiple times into this. Other creators have also taken sides, and Kanwal Aftab and Zulqarnain Sikandar stood with Eman. This ended up riling Rajab, who called Kanwal names. Zulqarnain Sikandar then took to YouTube and exposed how he helped Rajab’s career and even got his wedding sponsored by several vendors.
Alizeh Shah & Yasir Nawaz
Alizeh Shah and Yasir Nawaz worked together in Mera Dil Mera Dushman. They have not been on great terms. Yasir spoke negatively about Alizeh’s alleged unprofessionalism, but later, Alizeh exposed how she had to suffer on that set. They have since been fighting out. Yasir once again spoke about Alizeh and said that he would like to work with her again while Alizeh threatened legal action if he ever used her name on a show.
Fiza Ali & Ejaz Khan
As things were settling down in Pakistani showbiz industry, Fiza Ali invited her new husband Ejaz Khan to her show. They were having a candid conversation when she laughingly asked him to lift her. He lifted her in his arms on live television. It looked extremely inappropriate and now Fiza is facing criticism and ban calls from the audience.
Pakistani showbiz industry has been marred with too many controversies, call outs and clap backs. Many stars have been asking to practice patience before saying painful things to each other. Pakistani short film “Bhai” has been directed and written by Hamza Bangash. “Bhai” has been executive produced by Mina Husain of the Pakistan institute of Living and Learning (PILL) and Salman Ahmed. It has been co-produced by Taha Sabri of Taskeen and Westbury Group. Carol Noronha acts as the producer, with Ammar Ul Haque as the DOP.
A short film about two brothers, one who is on the autism spectrum explores the choices we make, shame, trauma and brotherhood has just made it to one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world “The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)”. It will be screened at the festival in September. Short film “Bhai” is surely going to make Pakistanis proud internationally.
What’s interesting and great about the film is that the actor playing the brother on the autism spectrum identifies as differently-abled. His name is Ayan Javaid and Bhai marks his film debut. Rarely do we see productions that cast differently-abled people to play differently-abled people in films. More often than not, the only representation we see of differently-abled people is through the lens and acting of people who are non-disabled.
Hamza Bangash, the director and writer of the film hopes that this film encourages Pakistan’s mainstream directors to offer more roles to people who are differently-abled as they are more than capable and can make films/cinema so much better through their nuanced performances and richly textured experiences.
Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar which has a lot of religious significance. Muslims across the world observe sorrow in this Holy Month. The Muslims deeply grieve the month because of the Shahdah of dearest grandson of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A). The Battle of Karbala took place in Muharram, the dreadful battle resulted in Hussain Ibn-e-Ali’s sorrowful martyrdom along with his countless supporters. Pakistan is being managed by massive floods right now. Punjab is under water after the heartbreaking devastation in KPK and Gilgit Batistan. The government response to this tragedy has been dismal. There have been no efforts to save the affectees and just photo-ops by high ranking ministers.
Pakistani reporter Mehrunnisa is going viral for her hilarious reporting during these devastating times. She is a young journalist who has been reporting from Shahdara Lahore and she got on a boat to film the situation. She was really terrified of the waters as she started reporting from her job site. Her expressions and accent are also going viral as people found her style hilarious and somewhat unserious.

Ramp walk is the best way for the designers to showcase what they are capable of. I think it’s the best way to promote the designs & cuts the fashion designers are bringing into fashion each season. I have always enjoyed seeing the traditional outfits being worn & shown on the ramps. The most favorite session of mine is the exhibition of Pakistani bridal dresses because each one of them is a masterpiece & to see all that glamour on screen in one frame is a treat to watch.
Where we do get to see the dresses which are enough of an inspiration – sadly, we do get to come across such ensembles which are beyond our understanding. I really actually do not understand the need of showcasing such apparels which are definitely not fit to be worn by the masses. I know the fashion designers come up with certain themes to actually show what they are good at but isn’t it a waste of resources especially with which people can not relate to?

Pakistan has a huge problem of road accidents as rules are never followed and the lack of right policing, good roads and traffic plans have become a reason for many Pakistanis losing their lives. There is also a lack of accountability especially with rich people killing the middle and lower middle class during rash driving and they never pay for what they have done. A recent rash accident took place at Karsaz in Karachi when the wife of Chairman of Gul Ahmed Energy Limited Natasha Danish Iqbal killed a father and daughter by the name of Amna Arif and Arif by hitting them with her car. 4 other people were also injured during the accident.
The woman crushed the father and daughter under her car while she was allegedly heavily drunk. People present at the spot stopped the woman and handed her over to the police. The videos of the woman have gone viral after she was not in her senses even after crushing six people:

A lot of news are floating on social media regarding the popular Bollywood film actor, director and producer Aamir Khan. Recently, in an interview, he revealed that he had decided to quit Bollywood. He said that he had decided to quit Bollywood completely during Covid and also talked to his ex wives and children about it.

Khalil ur Rehman Qamar broke the news of making a Pakistani comedy film. The film will be named as “Abhinandan Come On”. Actor Shamoon Abbasi will be playing the role of wing commander Abhinandan in it.
The movie will be released before the release of movie Kaaf Kangana.
Abhinandan is an Indian fighter pilot . Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan, who was captured by Pakistan after his MiG 21 Bison aircraft was shot down by a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jet . He had remained in Pakistani military’s custody for 60 hours. He was eventually released as a “goodwill gesture” by the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to India at the Wagah border late Friday.

Back in 1975 Ptv launched a game show Neelam Ghar which was conducted by Tariq Aziz.It awarded prizes (sponsored by commercial companies) based upon answers to general knowledge questions,poetry competitions and compatibility between newly weds.It also featured interviews of showbiz personalities,songs and other segments but it was mainly known for its prizes based upon general knowledge questions.The show ran successfully for many years,ended then began again in 2006 by a new name of Bazm-e-Tariq Aziz albeit not as popular as it used to be.
In the meantime,private TV Channels also came up with a similar concept awarding prizes sponsored by commercial companies in their Special Ramazan live transmissions.These prizes were awarded based on religious knowledge,hamds and naats etc.One channel started it and other channels caught up the trend like wild fire.Soon every channel had its own Ramazan Transmission having opulent sets,Iftari arrangements and lots of prizes.It soon turned into a ratings game with programs featuring a live conversion of a Christian to a Muslim to inviting a singer on the show and insulting him etc.
Seeing the popularity of these programs and the ratings they got Geo decided to come up with its own game show Inaam Ghar hosted by Amer Liaquat Hussain.This show which started in January 2014 does not test the knowledge of its participants.It relies on cheap games like eating maximum number of noodles in minimum possible time,cycling with your wives sitting behind you,juggling balls and what not.It also gives prizes for those who have a mirror in their purse,who are wearing a nose pin etc.The show is immensely popular ratings wise.
Seeing its popularity on ratings chart ARY launched its own game show Jeeto Pakistan in May 2014.It’s hosted by Fahad Mustafa is on similar lines and gives away prizes like bikes,cell phones,TV Sets,gift hampers etc based to winners of petty games and those having petty items in their purses/wallets/child of certain age/newly wed etc.
Lately Hum TV has also launched its game show Jeet Ka Dum having Faisal Qureshi as host and now Samaa is coming up with a show Jeet ka Samaa to be conducted by Sahir Lodhi.
What these shows are essentially doing are introducing a culture of easy money wherein you just need to do some petty chore and easily walk away with a cell phone,tv or a gift hamper.In a society filled with individuals already looking for short cuts,this is a really alarming trend and needs to be discouraged.
Secondly these shows are hurting the integrity of its participants.Seemingly educated and sophisticated people are seen gulping down gol guppay,noodles or spicy stuff or weight weight uncles carrying equally heavy weight aunties on bikes just to get a prize.It looks beyond their dignity.The participants look ridiculous to the viewers and maybe even to themselves but hey they get something!
I have nothing against the hosts of any of these shows nor am I against anyone winning a prize.By all means but can’t it be done by simulating the intellectual/creative cells of the participants.It would give rise to a much better society.Even if it can’t be done,the level of ridiculousness of the games/tasks should be reduced and prizes shouldn’t be awarded based on a baby wearing pink,someone having a mouth freshner in purse,someone newly wed etc.
Eid ul Adha 2025 is here. The occasion was celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm all over the world. Pakistanis started celebrating Eid on June 7th. The sacrificial animals were brought, good food was served and the country celebrated Eid with their loved ones. Pakistani politicians are also playing their part in celebrating the day.
Pakistani politicians are generally seen in a special mould. They have a certain image, they wear a certain type of clothes and live their lives in a set way. It would not be wrong to predict the future of Pakistani film industry which is now trying to cope up with the universal standards of entertainment and improving its impression all over the world. We did break the news of this movie few months back when it was propagated that Adnan Sami’s son has turned into a director and will soon be making a Pakistani movie. Now that the sources have revealed much about the project, here we are again to share more of it.
Azaad is said to be Pakistan’s first Psychological thriller movie which is based on the true events of serial killers. Pakistan is one of those countries where one finds the maximum number of patients who are mentally unfit and perceive the common meaning of life differently. Azaad is all about the life of a criminal who is actually mentally sick and lives in a fantasy that he created in his childhood to stay at peace. He is sentenced to death for killing eight innocent people.
The first theatrical promo is now all available on social media and film reviewing sites and the thriller movie lovers are now all waiting anxiously for the movie to make its release.

Visa-free travel, global reputation, international taxes and civil liberties are some of the terms and factors the passports are ranked against.
The annual Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index had ranked Pakistan 106th in a list 109 countries in 2015. Their list was produced in collaboration with the International Air Transport Association, ranked countries according to the number of other countries that their citizens can travel to, without having to obtain a visa.
Rishtay wali aunty, Mrs. Khan in her interview gave advises to married ladies. She believed that a woman must keep her mouth shut in order to bring peace and how girls must serve their husbands all the time. Her controversial video was criticized by people badly. Jibran Raheel is a young and talented Pakistani singer and songwriter, who made his debut with song ‘Jhoota Pyar’ in 2018. Jibran has performed in a variety of music shows in Pakistan and UAE. In 2012, he won the best singer award in UAE from the music maestro A.R. Rahman himself at the ‘Sing like a Star’ contest and performed with him live at Dubai International Stadium. Recently, Pakistani Musician Jibran Raheel made the nation proud as he wins the global singing contest in Turkey. Jibran won the competition against 40 different nations, with his soulful and mesmerizing voice.

We had a popular culture of rock and pop musical bands in Pakistan. From late 80s and rising to peak in early 90s but it seems as if this culture has died down. We had great musical bands like Vital Signs, Junoon, Awaz, Fuzon, Noori, Jal etc. Some of the bands split while the intensity of others died down.
Today we see and listen more of solo performances from the music artists. The main reason behind the downfall of this musical band culture are the difference among the singers of the bands and there inter conflicts. Jal & Awaz had such a split and some other bands too. Very few of the many bands
didn’t maintain its intensity because of their other commitments. We can recall how much “Strings” was popular but we are not having much from them now.
There used to be a number of live musical band concerts which were very popular among the youngster and college/university going students. Even some families also used to enjoy these type of concerts which were held in large numbers throughout the year but we can hardly see these group performances now. The social media is also not giving enough boost to the new bands and also our media too is not paying heed to new comers in this area. We must recognize the energy of the new comers to get this lost culture back in our society as it is not only a great source of entertainment but also it will provide an opportunity to the new comers to showcase their talents.
Moreover, another positive side of having musical bands back in our society is that they can act as peace ambassadors of Pakistan on international level. Many musical bands presented the soft side of Pakistan in international arena via showcasing their talents in international concerts, in past. “Strings”, “Fuzon” and “Noori” are some popular names among such bands. We must realize that internationally the image of Pakistan has been greatly damaged by the association of Terrorism, because of this our dear Pakistani fellows are suffering. In such a situation, what needed is, to restore the true image of Pakistan and that is only possible when we are going to be the ambassadors of peace and love. We must revive the musical band’s culture back in our society so that we can help our country to reveal its real face to the world which has been wrongly covered with the dust of terrorism
In the era when our bands were doing well in abroad, we did feel a great recognition for them. They not only earned good name for their own selves but also for their own dear country, Pakistan. By saying so, I do not by any mean claim that our solo singers are not doing good work. They are also doing great. Singers like Hadiqa Kiyani, Shehzad Roy etc are not only performing to get the lost image of Pakistan back but also they are appointed as the Peace Ambassadors. Hadiqa is the Peace Ambassador in U.N. and Shehzad Roy has also earned an esteemed name on International level. This kind of respect was also stolen by our musical bands which are no longer present. We should try to get them back in our society. This is not only necessary for our entertainment alone but also for the country.
Rock, Pop, Jazz. We miss them all. We miss the enthusiasm of Junoon and their popular patriotic songs, we miss the vibe of Jal and the energy of Awaz. We need them back. We need new energy. We need new musical bands that can infuse our culture back with vibrancy & spark

Pakistani Movies To Watch In 2019 – Pakistani film industry has come a long way. There was a time when Pakistani movies were made for specific kind of viewers but that is not the case now. Every year Pakistani filmmakers make different genres of movies which target the viewers which were once completely forgotten by the filmmakers. Those actors who had attached themselves to the drama industry alone, now are seen showing more interest in working in Pakistani Movies. The quality is only getting better with time and it won’t be wrong to say that there is something for everyone in these films every year. The viewers enjoy watching their favorite stars on the big screen and have been supporting the Pakistani cinema by watching even those films which are not always the best.

A few last years have been very fortunate for otherwise shattering Pakistani cinema. Movies like Josh, Siyah and Waar infused a new life to our film industry. 2014 is no different! A lot of Pakistani movies are going to release this year! We will be watching a lot of Shan Shahid with a strong dose of patriotism in 2014. Another interesting thing is the shifting of mini screen artists to big screen. Many talented Television artists are going to make their cinema debut this year.

Kambakht
Produced by Ayaad Ibrahim & Sharmeen Khan and directed by Hamza Ali Abbasi, Kambakht is an action comedy movie that will release this April all across Pakistan under the banner of ARY Films. Kambakht is starring Pakistan’s heartthrob Sheheryar Munawar Siddique, senior TV and Film actor Hamayun Saeed, senior lollywood action figure Shafqat Cheema, the new intelligence in town Hamza Abbasi, the girl with pretty smile Soha Ali Abro and others. Screen play of the movie is written by Hamza himself while we get to see two other names, Atif Siddiqui and Jawad Rana as writers too.
I have high hopes from Hamza Ali Abbasi and really looking forward to the release of Kambakht. I never really admired Soha Ali Abro as an actress but we shall see how she proves herself in her cinema debut.
Jalebi
A joint venture of ARY and Redrum Films, Jalebi is all set to hit cinemas in Pakistan very soon. This is going to be one of its kind movie since according to sources, some of the parts of the movie will be animated. This is probably going to happen for the first time in Pakistan so the patriotic Pakistani in me is already taking pride in it while anticipating it impatiently.
Prominent names from the movie cast are; Danish Taimoor, Adnan Jafar, Ali Safina and Zhalay Sarhadi. Another thing to make you excited about Jalebi is the fact that it has been shot via ARRI Alexa HD cameras. Yes! the same fancy-shmancy cameras that were used to shot famous Skyfall, Iron Man 3 and gravity.
Naach
Starring king of Pakistani cinema, Shan Shahid and Momal Sheikh, Naach was scheduled to release in 2013 but due to some inevitable reasons the release was delayed. Hopefully the movie will be released soon now. Shan is going to play the character of a dance teacher in Naach and we will be seeing some major dance moves and intense emotions of love, rivalry and jealousy in the movie.
Saya-e-Khuda-e-Zuljilal
Umair Fazli’s Saya-e-Khuda-e-Zuljilal is supposedly releasing on 14th August, 2014. The film is featuring the events of history of the nation and its heroes. Kudos to the entire team for a courageous attempt to introduce the forgotten part of the history to the new generation. The cast includes Shan Shahid, Noman Ijaz, Kamran Mujahid, Sohail Sameer and Nayyer Ijaz.
Operation 021
Pakistan’s first ever big budget action thriller movie is directed by the internationally acclaimed media personality Summer Bodhi Nicks, he not only directed the movie but also wrote its screen play. Operation 021 is produced by Zeba Bakhtiar and Azaan Sami Khan and is in news for a while now.
The movie stars action hero Shaan Shahid, Iman Ali and Aamina Sheikh – the perfect threesome. I personally am a fan of all three and cannot wait to watch them rock the big screen together.
Hijrat
Director Farooq Maingal is making her cinema debut with movie Hijrat, starring sizzling Rabia Butt and Asad Zaman. The story of Hijrat is written in the background of the Afghan war and as its name denotes, will be highlighting the lives of people who were compelled to take refuge in other places. The movie is shot in Turkey, Balochistan and Karachi.
Tamanna
Pakistan’s first noir movie Tamanna’s story “is essentially about class snobbery, adultery and ego”. Starring Mehreen Raheel, Salman Shahid, Omair Rana and Feryal Gauhar, the promotional banners of the movie look really promising. Mehreen Raheel, with her vintage winged eyeliner and matte red lips is looking really classic and according to me, is a great choice for such movie genre, but of course if she does justice to her role with her acting skills as well.

It has been seen that the last few years have been adding class, respect and quality content in Pakistan’s film industry and ready to add another star in the list, Josh is soon expected next month.
Been directed by Iram Parveen Bilal and produced by Saad Bin Mujeeb, Kelly Thomas and Iram herself, the movie enjoys a rich cast including Aamina Sheikh, Mohib Mirza, Khalid Malik, Naveen Waqar and Ali Rizvi. After a huge success of movie “Seedlings”, Aamina Sheikh will again be seen on screen doing a lead role.
The movie revolves around a girl Fatima who happens to be a dedicated school teacher. Fatima enjoys a high-life in Karachi and was leading a peaceful life when one day her nanny Nusrat-B disappears, leaving all the member of the family suspicious. Fatima being close to her, finally decides to take the challenge and leaves home in search of her. She visits the rural areas that are still in the darkness of feudalism and life was certainly different for women there.
The story also highlights the significance of women’s rights which is a serious issue within the country. The cast of the movie has added further weightage to its popularity where you will also see Naveen Waqar, “Sara” of Humsafar and “Dollie” of Dollie ki ayegi Barat doing a major role.

We have been hearing back to back news of many upcoming Pakistani movies, and the latest entrant in this category is the independent movie ‘Dukhtaar’. The cast includes Samiya Mumtaz, Mohib Mirza, Saleha Aref, Asif Khan, Omair Rana and few others.
The main attraction of this movie is its unique story line which revolves around a young mother, Allah Rakhi (Samiya Mumtaz) who kidnaps her ten-year-old daughter on the day of her daughter’s forced marriage and makes a run for it to save her daughter from the ill-fate ahead. A powerful tribal leader is then on their trail and pursues the runaway mother and his child bride. The conflict between the mother and daughter; and the opposed forces is the center point of the story. This movie highlights the social issues that are being faced by women in Interior Khyber Pakhtoon and Interior Punjab.
Afia Nathaniel the director, producer and writer of this movie is a LUMS graduate. She established Zambeel Films in 2008, with a vision of producing local films for global audience. Earlier, she has done three short films; Toba Tek Singh, Long After (Muntazir), and Butterfly as writer, producer, director, and editor. It is a proud moment for all of us to see that the male dominated film industry is now been taken over by females too who are just as capable as males with the technical and creative expertise. Afia is a valuable addition to our list of film-makers as she has diverse academic knowledge and work experience even outside Pakistan. She has won the support of an international forum like Worldview on the basis of her talent, knowledge and expertise. Previously, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary ‘Saving Face’ had won the Oscars.
The film is attracting attention internationally with its Gotham Award nomination which will be held in the New York City. The Gotham Independent Film Awards are now in their 23rd year and are wholly for the benefit of independent films and this time Pakistani entry Dukhtar has made it to the “Live The Dream” award category introduced by Calvin Klein to support women filmmaker in their post-production and distribution endeavors. It is one of the three finalists of this year, the other two movies that are nominated are: Beneath the Harvest Sky and Awol. Dukhtar is co-produced by Afia Nathaniel, one of Pakistan’s most exciting filmmakers and founder of Lahore-based Zambeel Films, and Muhammad Khalid Ali, a seasoned producer at The Crew Films.
According to Afia Nathaniel,“The film is a powerful story about a mother’s personal quest to save her ten-year-old daughter from an arranged marriage to a tribal leader. It is also Pakistan’s first road-trip thriller shot in the surreal landscapes of the northern areas. The Gotham awards nomination for the ‘Live The Dream’ award comes at a great time for us as we continue with our post-production and strategize for our eventual release in various markets, including Pakistan.”
Since, it is the first road trip movie of Pakistan; we can expect to see some exciting locations and thrilling scenes that would keep us on the edge of our seats. This film will also be released in Pakistan very soon!
Dukhtar is going to portray the ignorance, obliteration, and backward mentality that is prevalent in our society. Through these independent movies based on social issues, we can educate the society and bring the social evils into the limelight.
This is another movie worth looking forward too. It is not a mainstream movie, but the story is gripping enough to make you go to the cinema.
It is more than a pleasure to state that this time, Pakistan will be making its way to the Oscars award ceremony which holds significant importance globally. The recent release of Pakistani movie ‘Zinda Bhaag’, starring some veteran actors like Naseeruddin Shah, is all done with its premiere and will be releasing nationwide on September 20th.
We did share a report on Pakistan’s participation in Oscars and stated that Pakistan Academy Selection Committee (PASC) has been established to make sure that the best content is been nominated for Oscars. The committee has nominated Zinda Bhaag for oscars and more to delight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will choose the final nominees for all award categories including Best Foreign Language Film by 8th January 2014. The complete and final list of Oscar nominees will be announced on 16th January 2014.
Been directed by Farjad and Meenu, the movie is shot in Lahore and can be considered as a dedication to the Lahori culture. The story of the film revolves around a group of four friends who are on the lookout of finding a quick way to earn fame and wealth. The media and the celebrities are excited with the news of been represented on a platform as big as of Oscars, this, surely is a big achievement for the Pakistani Media.

It is only a few months ago that I shared about this upcoming movie which tends to survive pretty well in the Pakistani film industry and here I am back again with the latest update about the movie ‘Tamana’. The movie will soon be making its way to the Pakistani cinemas and will be releasing on Pakistan day, that is, March 23rd, 2014.
The film comes under the banner of Summit Entertainment, while produced by Sarah Tareen and directed by Steven Moore.
The cast of the film comprises of a close-knit group of actors who have strong grounds in theatre and television. The charismatic Salman Shahid, who is fresh-off the release, remarked that he had done some theatre with Omair Rana and has worked with Mehreen Raheel’s mother Seemi Raheel.
The story revolves around a character that is been played by Salman Shahid of a film director who loves to play real life games and it is Hameed Sheikh who falls in as his prey.
The film has already received considerable acclaim due to its soundtrack. The track, Koi Dil Mein, which has been sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and composed by Sahir Ali Bagga, won the Best Music Talent in Film Award in the 14th London South Asian Film Festival 2012’s BAFTA ceremony.

We always underestimate Pakistani talent but our country is filled with talented people. Pakistani models, Mushk Kaleem and Alicia Khan are going to represent Pakistan at the Milan Fashion Week.
They are going to walk for Italian designer Stella Jean who collaborated with UNIDO. The designer’s upcoming collection will feature handicrafts from northern Pakistan.
The pair were selected for the prestigious fashion week after Stella visited Pakistan earlier this year. The designer had met with government representatives and particularly observed the craft indigenous to the north.
