The legendry Javed Sheikh was recently spotted in a show “Time Out With Ahsan Khan”.
Javed Sheikh revealing about why he ran away from home mentioned that “I ran away from home after stealing 100Rs from my fathers wallet. We were three to four friends altogether and we were going to Lahore to become an actor. I was twelve or thirteen at that time.”
“Somehow, my father came to know that I was going to Lahore and he reached at the railway station with some of his friends. We were very happy and excited to leave when suddenly my father came and grabbed me by the neck”, added Javed Sheikh.
Javed Sheikh further said that “I still remember that my father hanged me upside down and started beating me.”
Jannat Mirza is the most successful TikToker from Pakistan. She also has a significant fan following on Instagram. Her sister Alishba Anjum is also a social media star and they are both seen on events and endorsing products in addition to making their own content. Jannat Mirza was a guest on Shaan e Suhoor with her family and she spoke about not signing any dramas. She revealed that she has some issues with dramas. She would love to sign a drama but she is actually scared of PIA and the airline accidents that she has witnessed over the years. She does not want to travel to Karachi on a plane as she is scared of domestic flights and all the dramas are shot there.
She also revealed that it is generally a big time commitment to sign on a drama and that is why she does not want to do dramas. She loves to stay in Faisalabad where her family is based and cannot commute too much to Karachi. She was even scared on the flight to Karachi which she took to attend Shan e Suhoor.
Bollywood produces loads of item songs every year. In India itself, there are groups of people who criticize them, and then there are those who like them. Of course, we can’t deny the existence of Pakistanis who love these songs (and the nudes that come with them). Some of our film makers also appear to be their fans. The point is, that there will always be people who love and hate item songs, but are item songs really “bad” enough to be stopped? Let’s see why:
Firstly, they reduce humans to “items”. The words “item” and “song” mixed together give a weird image. The item that is roped in to dance to the tunes is mostly a woman, who will dress in the most revealing clothes, and seduce all the men around her with her moves. Her dancing talent alone wouldn’t even generate half the money. The rest of it comes from her boldness and being bold means to be as revealing as you can (or as the director wants you to be). While some women don’t mind item songs, others hate them mainly because they are demeaning.
They are an unhealthy obsession. Movie makers, especially in B-Town, seem to be obsessed with item songs. Every other movie has one and there is one reason for that, the money.
Why would the film makers care about how demeaning women find item numbers, when they have a huge number of men waiting for one glimpse of the item girl? When they know they can force men to come to movie theaters through the 1-2 minute teasers of these item numbers? Moreover, won’t the rantings of the common woman sound stupid to them, when they have a line-up of women ready to dance to the beat?
They have so many reasons to continue making these songs, that they’d never stop to think how unhealthy they are for the society. There is a huge difference between literate and illiterate men. There are men who respect women and those who don’t. Showing women as objects will only encourage them to demean the opposite gender even more. The worst part is, when kids are seen dancing over these songs on weddings, while their mothers and fathers clap and encourage them.
Item numbers glorify every thing a stalker would do. Every woman knows being stalked is a frightful experience. Girls who travel through public transport have complainedabout men hungrily staring at them, whistling at them or trying to touch them. The lyrics of these songs are used to call upon the girls. It is a really painful experience for them.
Women in item numbers present themselves to men. The hero of the film will dance with them while they do so, and he will imply all of the above mentioned traits of stalkers.
Last but not the least, item numbers are not needed. They don’t make the story progress in anyway. The movie can be made without them and probably the hero will have our respects then. Who could “like” a hero who dances with nude women on some really vulgar song? That’s cheating on the heroine isn’t it?

So much so that even some of the celebrities who had been praising the show till then, started criticizing the writer and the ‘mindset’ behind the show. In a way the writer himself gave people a reason to criticize not just him but the drama too. Up until that point no one had criticized Mere Pass Tum Ho as a male chauvinistic bigoted piece of writing but after that everything was assessed from that angle especially by a specific group of people on social media particularly.
The analysis of the dialogues, showing Mehwish as the vamp and every minute detail was put under the microscope even by those social media users who were not watching the show. This interview basically attracted the attention of even those people who had no idea what the show was about and probably never really seriously sat down to watch Pakistani dramas. So, that’s when Mere Pass Tum Ho turned in to the most controversial play (in the eyes of some people) which was reflecting the regressive and outdated mindset that was responsible for putting women down.

The interview given by the writer made many people who strongly disliked him for whatever he said analyzed every single dialogue from that point of view and that is when the 2 takay ki aurat dialogue was over scrutinized by the public. Since this dialogue went viral, there were so many people who were not even watching the show who got enraged because a man whose character was written by Khalil-ur-Rehman called his ex-wife 2 takay ki!
To this day, all such people pick up such dialogues and make sure that others see how wrong they are. And that is how the dialogues which were meant to show something else turned controversial.
The Bold Scenes and Scenarios
The bold scenes and scenarios in this drama have also made it controversial especially for those people who strongly believe that Pakistani dramas should be family dramas. The way a married woman openly had an affair was considered indecent storyline by many people. And then the fact that Mehwish and Shahwar are living together without getting married has raised controversies too.
The dialogues of Khalil-ur-Rehman’s dramas are always bold and therefore controversial but this time because this drama got so much hype so the dialogues have come under even more scrutiny especially in light on the writer’s earlier comments.
Controversy Sells!
Well! Mere Pass Tum Ho has proved that controversy sells even though the makers did not attempt to make a controversy and were often seen clearing the air. But, the fact that there were so many controversies regarding this drama has been one of its selling points. It would however be wrong to say that this has been the only selling point like some other dramas. There are many television watching viewers who are not active on social media and therefore such people most often have no idea how a drama is being scrutinized on social media. There are also innumerable fans who use social media and turn to it to show their love and appreciation for their favorite show Mere Pass Tum Ho.
The performances and the way this drama has been made can easily be termed as its backbone which is the main reason why it has been so immensely popular among the masses. It nevertheless continues to be controversial too but all of us who have been watching Pakistani dramas for years now, know that Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar is not afraid of controversies. His dramas most often are bold and because of that they are considered controversial.

We have at one time seen Mawra doing back to back drams and she was never away from the screens. Iman Ali revealed that she has rejected many big movies, even if the director of the movie is her friend then she might have an issue with the writer of the movie. Naming the movies she has rejected, Iman shared that she has rejected Karachi Sy Lahore, Punjab Nahi Jaongi, Jawani Phi Nahi Aani 1, and Na Maloom Afraad. While talking about the reasons behind rejecting these movies Iman Ali said that Jawani Phir Nahi Aani and Na Maloom Afraad were the movies of boys.
While justifying the reason behind rejecting Punjab Nahi Jaongi, Iman said that the progression of her character wasn’t right, the writer didn’t do justice with the character of the heroine. She also pinpointed the fault of the writer (Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar) saying that he only knows Punjab therefore, he should only write about it, why he wrote about a girl belonging to Karachi who has returned from London.

Veena Malik has been famous for all the wrong reasons for more than half a decade now. I grew up bashing Veena Malik purely because everyone in my school was doing it. I hadn’t watched any of her videos or kept up with her on big boss but hey, everyone said she was rotten so who was I to disagree? My opinion didn’t change for a long time, she’d constantly be on the news and I was indifferent but every time someone brought her up I’d jump onto the hate bandwagon. Recently a clip from an interview she did back in 2011 resurfaced and changed the way I saw her and those around me. I suggest you watch the video before continuing further.

Why aren’t Pathans rising up together against him being an insult to ‘Pakhtoon pride’? Why are there no clerics giving impassioned speeches against him? Why is he still alive while she’s dead? Because she was a woman. You may not agree with what she did, and because of the universal right to freedom of speech, you have every right to an opinion but did she really deserve a bullet to her head for something that YOU easily could’ve turned your eyes to? YOU could’ve blocked her? If YOU have a right to freedom of expression why didn’t she?
This is a trend in Pakistan. We pick up our pitch forks and light our torches every time a woman does something with her own life. But when children are being raped, women being abused and ‘politicians are bribing, robbing and killing in the name of Islam’ we stay quiet. We make a face, nod in disagreement acknowledging that its wrong but then do nothing. However as soon as a video surfaces of an actress dancing in her car, there’s a public outcry. Women are ‘soft targets’, they’re easy to pick on and make us feel like at least we’re fighting for something. Clerics especially just love to condemn these women as if they’re the only threat to Islam. They have rallies, spit out harsh words all in an attempt to make sure everyone thinks they’re doing something to justify their tax-free lives. They give the illusion of work being done so no one can rise up against them. Think of it this way, they clean a bowl and put it at the center of the dinning room table for everyone to see so no one notices the unwashed dishes piled up in the sink. It’s easy for them because they know these woman can’t fight back on the same scale.
And for everyone who says that it’s because they ruin the image of Pakistan and disrespect our ideologies, I would just like to say to you; really? Does Pakistan really have a bad reputation because of Veena Malik? Is your visa being rejected because of Qandeel Baloch? Is our Prime Minister being treated with less respect at international forums because a woman decided to wear short clothes and kiss a guy?
We place the entire burden of our nation and religion’s reputation on the shoulders of women who did even ask for it. And then we bury them alive if they refuse to carry it. We’re quick to cry foul every time a woman does something that she may even grow up to realize as a mistake. Instead of treating them with patience and kind words, we share their memes and add our own derogatory captions. We don’t lend a hand to someone at a low point in their lives instead push them down further. We don’t pick out our targets with careful thought and consideration rather just go for what’s easiest. We frown at a woman in short clothes but play ‘tutti frutti‘ at every mehndi. We add completely irrelevant item songs to our movies and then show our knives to Neelum Muneer. We are a nation of hypocrites, want proof?
