Coke Studio Season 12 Episode 2 – An Overview

Coke Studio’s episode 2 was released this Friday. The artists lineup included Ibrar Ul Haq, Zeb Bangash, Shuja Haider & Rachel Viccaji. This episode had some brilliant performances to its credit. Lets get to all the songs one by one:

1- Billo :

Coke Studio’s rendition of 1995 classic Billo by Abrar Ul Haq was the first song of this episode & what a performance it was. I felt so nostalgic. Everything was just perfect. The energy, the music, the vocals, everything was on point. Lyrics were too funny. I always love Coke Studio songs more because of the backing vocalists and they were the best thing in this new rendition of Billo. The way they were singing it and enjoying it was great. Kudos to them. Billo surely is going to be the new Bhangra song for weddings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBxrpNO3EV0

2- Roshe:

Roshe is a Kashmiri folk song written by Habba Khatoon, sung by Zeb Bangash. This one has a very calm feel to it. Lyrics are beautiful. It is a song of ‘love and loss’. The melody is mesmerizing. However, this one is facing criticism on social media by Kashmiris, who are saying that Zeb’s pronunciation of Kashmiri language was not good.

3- Saiyaan:

Saiyaan is a duet of Shuja Haider & Rachel Viccaji. Sadly, this one wasn’t uploaded on YouTube due to copyrights issues but was uploaded on Coke Studio’s Facebook Page. Saiyaan is by far my most favorite Coke Studio song of this year. The melody is beautiful. Shuja Haider has no comparison when it comes to composing songs. Rachel has done a brilliant job. I liked the way Shuja has reused Mann Maayal’s OST’s lyrics in it. I hope that the copyright issues are resolved soon because this one is a masterpiece not to be missed.

Coke Studio Season 12 – Premier & Episode 1

The much-anticipated season of Coke Studio Pakistan had it’s premier last Friday. Everybody was looking forward to this season with great expectations, mainly because of the return of the maestro Rohail Hayat. Coke Studio is indeed the biggest music platform in Pakistan and has given us huge hits which are equally popular in other parts of the world too.

Now coming to the episode, we had: Wohi Khuda Hai, Dam Mastam, Ram Pam, Maahi Diyaan Jhokaan.

Coke Studio Season 12
Produced By: Rohail Hayat

Wohi Khuda Hai:

The season starter was the hamd ‘Wohi Khuda Hai’ by Atif Aslam, originally written and recited by Muzaffar Warsi and then by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Atif Aslam has really done a brilliant job. It touches the heart. Atif’s vocals are so mesmerizing. I loved the ending part (Darood), it’s so divine and the harmony spreads all over.

The only thing I feel could have been better, is the use of backing vocalists. They are not fully utilized in this one. Otherwise, it is majestic.

Dam Mastam:

Dam Mastam (My breath is intoxicated) is a sufi dhamaal song written by Shehbaz Qalandar that depicts his love for Hazrat Ali (R.A), performed by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Its lyrics are beautiful. I don’t think that the first half was catchy enough but the second half where it shifts to double beat was brilliant and did work for me. It is a different take on Qawwali and what I liked most was  Rohail’s signature music in it.

Ram Pam:

Ram Pam is a fun song, a light-hearted take on love, written and composed by Sahir Ali Bagga, performed by Zoe Viccaji and Shahab Hussain. It is my favorite from the episode. It is basically the story of a girls who is in love and she is telling her friend about this. The music is catchy. Lyrics are funny. Backing vocalists have done great job. Zoe’s voice was perfect for the song. My favorite part was,

Tu fikar na kar O Bachi!
Tere nall hai Baba Bhatti!

This made me laugh so hard 😂😂.

And the way Zoe says, Baba Ji shukriya karam, it was perfect.

Maahi Diyaan Jhokaan:

Maahi Diyaan Jhokaan is a Seraiki sufi track, performed by Barkat Jamil Fakir Troupe. What I felt was that it is a tale narrated by Heer, telling about what she is going through after falling in love with Ranjha. Barkat Jamil Troupe has done justice to it and the backing vocals were the main attraction in this one for me. Its composition is very captivating. Lyrics are beautiful and meaningful.

Roz e azal kanoon sir sachuu de
(Since the very first day of creation, Sachhal’s head)

Mohbat laiyaan mokhaan
(Has been offered up as a gift of sacrifice to love)

So, overall, first episode was great. Looking forward to the next ones. Do share your opinion about the episode in comments.

Coke Studio Season 10 to Recreate National Anthem!

Each season, Coke Studio brings all the artists of the show to sing one national song and this year, the 40 artists of Coke Studio season 10 will be recreating our national Anthem! In the past, we saw over 20 singers sing the famous national songs like ‘Sohni Dharti’ and ‘Ay Rahay Haq Ke Shaheedon’ .

Some of those musicians that are to sing ‘Pak Sir Zameen’ include the likes of Sajjad Ali, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Farhan Saeed, Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Ali Noor, Ali Hamza, Ali Sethi and Quratulain Balouch. This patriotic song will be produced by Strings themselves.

Coke Studio Season 10 to Recreate National Anthem!

A national anthem of any country is an integral part of its identity. Whenever a country gains its freedom or independence, one of the first things established is a national anthem. A national anthem signifies the Nation’s status. It brings out strong feelings of pride, loyalty, dedication, allegiance and patriotism.

This is what Strings had to say about the idea to The News,

By bringing together some of the biggest names in Pakistan’s music industry to sing our revered National Anthem, we hope to rekindle the spirit of patriotism and social consciousness in the heart of every Pakistani. This is more significant now than ever, as we are marking seventy years of our independence.

Coke Studio has chosen a great time to release this recreation of the anthem as the 70th anniversary of our country is right around the corner. Furthermore, this season of coke studio marks the 10th consecutive season of the country’s iconic platform, Coke Studio.

Coke Studio Season 10 Finale Review- A Perfect Ending!

0

This season Coke Studio was not a very good one atleast for me. Most of the songs were just Okay but they really gave a perfect ending to the season with Us Rah Par. The last episode had Sajjad Ali, Shuja Haider, Aima Baig, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Ali Hamza and Ali Zafar in the artist line up. Lets get to each song individually:

Tera Naam:

The song is sung by Sajjad Ali and he is the music director too. Tera Naam was an average song for me. It was not very good but not bad either. The lyrics were nice and Sajjad as usual did a good job too but Ronay Na Diya was his best. The music was also his typical style but this song overall lacked that magic touch which makes his songs stand out. Overall an average one!

Baanware:

Music is directed by Shuja Haider and the singers are Aima Baig and Shuja Haider. This was a true Shuja Haider song. His voice is magical and the music was appealing to the ears too. This was Aima’s third and the best performance. It was an Aima kind of song and really matched her style of singing. A perfect song to have in the season finale. The way Aima and Shuja’s voice were paired made it a must have for playlists.

Maula Tera Noor:

Shafqat Amanat Ali sung Maula Tera Noor and the music director is Shani Arshad. I don’t know why but Shafqat showed no variation in his performances this season. All of them sounded so similar that it would be difficult to differentiate. Same as in Bol he was very slow, yes this is the demand of the composition but his singing was boring too. This was the worst composition of the day and may have been left out of the finale.

Us Rah Par:

BEST! BEST! BEST! Ali Zafar and Ali Hamza gave tribute to the legendary Junaid Jamshed with Us Rah Par and this is how you give tribute to a legend. It was sung beautifully by both and the music by Jaffer Zaidi was out of the world. I loved the way strings joined in during the performance and became a part of the tribute. This was the perfect ending to this year’s not so perfect Coke Studio. This was Ali Zafar’s best performance too and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Jaffer was the best music director of this season.

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 6 Review-Wrong Pairing Of Artists!

0

Episode 6 of Coke Studio Season 10 featured Jabar Abbas, Umain Jaswal, Ali Zafar, Natasha Khan, Aima Baig, Humera Arshad, Rachel Viccaji, Momina Mustehsan and Ireteassh. Lets get to each song one by one.

Dam Mast Qalandar:

The episode opened with a tribute to legendary Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The singers were Jabar Abbas and Umair Jaswal. Music is directed by Shuja Haider. A very good attempt indeed. Jabar did total justice to the rendition and background vocals by the qawwal party made it even more great for ears. Umair Jaswal was however not needed in this at all. Jabar Abbas should have done this as a solo artist since Umair was just dancing alongside him and did nothing to make the song look good. It was Jabar’s performance and a good one from Coke Studio.

Yo Soch:

It was a bilingual song sung by Ali Zafar and Natasha Khan. Music is directed by Strings. The combination of Jazz and Pushto is a total win win for me. I loved Natasha’s vocals and the range of her voice is calming as well as mesmerizing. Ali did an okay job too but it would have sounded nicer if Ali Sethi has sung it alongside Natasha. Coke Studio is also doing an Ali Zafar overdose and getting him for every second song is not a good step when there are many other artists whom you can approach.

Kaatay Na Katay:

The artists are Humera Arshad, Rachel Viccaji and Aima Baig. Music is directed by Ali Hamza. Humera Arshad is the star of the song hands down. Rachel also gave a refreshing feel to the song but Aima’s voice was not matching with the other two artists. She sounded very shrill and maybe leaving her out of this performance would have made it flawless. As for Humera I would simply say that why these artists are left out and the not so polished ones are given chances again and again. She has shown excellent talent and made Kaatay Na Katay a must for playlists.

Ghoom Taana:

Music director is Salman Ahmed and the artists are Momina Mustehsan and Irteaash. An under average performance. The only good thing were Salman Ahmed’s guitar parts. Even Irteaash’s performance was not good and they sounded more like background singers. The music composition had the Junoon touch to it and to be honest the song sounded like a music performance with singers filling up the background though it should have been the other way around. A bad one!

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 5- Best So Far!

0

Episode 5 of the season 10 aired today. The episode consisted of four songs as usual and the participating artists are Attaullah Esakhelvi, Sanwal Esakhelvi, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Faraz Anwer, Faiza Mujahid and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan. This was a good one overall. Lets get to each song individually:

Sab Maya Hai:

Sung by Attaullah Esakhelvi and his son Sanwal Esakhelvi and the music directed by Shuja Haider, this is indeed a perfect song for me. Attaullah Esakhelvi is no doubt a legend and knows how to get inside his listeners’s hearts but surprisingly Sanwal did well too. The song was soothing and passionate at the same time which was a perfect combination. Shuja Haider finally has provided a treat for the ears. Loved this one. Though I think the song should have been named Ishq Pawayan Zanjeeran since Inshaa’s poetry got only a little part. Still a good addition indeed.

Rangrez:

Yes this is what Rahat Fateh Ali Khan capable to do. Music was directed by Sahir Ali Bagga. After the painful Sayonee Rahat is back to his usual self and yes his usual self is brilliant. A classical piece performed with class. Since Coke Studio mentioned Danyal for standing beside and playing guitar which was not very unique either, I think they should have mentioned the name of the guy who played shehnai. That music alone made this song what it sounded as a final product. A Coke Studio level product finally!

Ujaalon Main:

Sung by Faraz Anwer and Faiza Mujahid. Music is directed by Jaffer Zaidi. Faraz is also the man behind the original composition so he recreated his song. It was the rock song for the night and I find it just okay. It was not very good or extraordinary. Still better than the ones like Muntazir which were needlessly included in this season. Jaffer Zaidi is hands down the winner in this song. Music was very good but vocal part wasn’t extraordinary which made this one an average.

Bol:

Faiz Ahmed Faiz Sahab was given a tribute by Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan. Music director for this one is Shani Arshad. It could have been the best song of this season but the composition didn’t work. It was not bad but it was not mind blowing either. The music again was too slow and didn’t match with the gist of the lyrics. I am a sad song lover too but everything cannot be changed to lullaby kind of stuff. The music should have been more passionate. Shafqat although did a very good job as far as the vocals are concerned but the choice of music composition made this one  an average.

All in all this episode is by far the best one uptill now. Lets see what else is there in store. Which song was your favourite today? Share in comments!

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 4 Review-Matlab Kuch Bhi?!!

0

Matlab Kuch Bhi? Yes those are my thoughts on episode 4. What Coke Studio is trying to achieve this season is a very important question. The episode features Javed Bashir, Akbar Ali, Amir Zaki, Qurutulain Baloch, Farhan Saeed, Ali Zafar, Danyal Zafar, Ali Hamza and Nirmal Roy. Okay lets get into how Coke Studio is killing all the expectations. Here is the song by song breakdown:

Naina Moray:

The only song worth mentioning in Coke Studio. A very good combo of singers. Music director is Jaffer Zaidi. Both Akbar Ali and Javed Bashir know their crafts and crooned the beautiful classical melody with utmost talent and professionalism. Javed Bashir is very underrated as compared to the talent that this man has and he showed the same talent in this episode too. Akbar Ali also matched the perfection and made this song a great listen. It was Amir Zaki’s last performance and the excellence of his skills was clearly visible. The only good song today.

Latthay Di Chaadar:

Music director is Shani Arshad. Another remake which shouldn’t have been remade. So the song started by soft notes of Farhan Saeed and I thought this one will be nice since QB is also here. But then I realized NO, this is average but then QB started singing and the left over expectations fell into a pit and shattered into a million pieces. Why did they turned Latthay Di Chaadar which is meant to be a tune to which people dance into some mourning symphony. QB was stressing too much on the words and making them sound thick that they became unbearable. A very bad rendition. Didn’t thought I would say this but Farhan was better than QB.

Julie:

Ye sabb mil karr humko pagal bana rahe hain! The only thought for this song. Ali has done Rockstar too and it was good but Julie a big no. The lyrics were tacky and the song was so bad that Ali took off his jacket in order to distract the audience. The song has Danyal specially mentioned and for what kyunki barray bhaiyya gaa rahe hain. There are so many talented musicians in Coke Studio who will never be mentioned like this. But Danyal will play guitar standing alongside the lead singer with his name specially mentioned. Parchi all the way! Music director for this one is also Shani Arshad and this song really made me go Matlab Kuch Bhi!!

Jindjaani:

The singers are Ali Hamza and Nirmal Roy. Music director is Ali Hamza. This one was average. Not a bad one but not extraordinary either. Ali Hamza knows what he is doing and Nirmal’s vocals are beautiful too. The only problem I found with this one was it didn’t sound new to me. It felt like Paar Chanaa De was being played with slightly changed music. The combination of singers was good though.

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 3 Review-Average Overall!

0

Episode 3 aired today and the artists lineup included Qurutulain Baloch, Areib Azhar, Akbar Ali, Sajjad Ali, Zaw Ali, Sahir Ali Bagga, Aima Baig, Humera Channa and Nabeel Shaukat. It was an average episode with some good and some not so good performances. No wow factor today either. One thing which I found a bit annoying today was that the young singers constantly shove angrezi accents in Urdu and other regional language songs which seems a bit off-putting. Lets get to all the songs one by one:

Laal Meri Pat:

Sung by Qurutulain Baloch, narration done by Areib Azhar and classical notes sung by Akbar Ali, Laal Meri Pat should have been a real good deal but it was not so. Music was directed by Strings. QB is indeed the best choice for this song and the other artists did their parts well too but the music? It was too mellow!! Laal Meri Pat should always make the listeners go all Dam Dam Mast Qalander and not act as some background music for relaxation exercises. It could have been so much better if the music had been kept a few beats higher. Music made it average.

Ronay Na Diya:

Ronay Na Diya marked the debut of Zaw Ali who is the daughter of Sajjad Ali. To be honest all my expectations died after what Danyal Zafar did but Zaw is really good. Yes nepotism is quite visible here but the girl is talented too. Music was also directed by Sajjad Ali who it seemed kept his part humble and threw spotlight more on Zaw and Zaw did not insult the opportunity and gave her hundred percent. I found the English part of the song a bit not needed but Zaw made it acceptable with her vocals. The accent issue was there in the song when Zaw kept angrezi accent in Urdu lyrics after she reverted from English to Urdu. Overall a good song and a good debut.

Baazi:

The music was directed by Sahir Ali Bagga who also sung it alongside Aima Baig. Aima is the new sensation for the season alike Momina. The girl is a good singer but choosing a Siraiki number for her was not a good choice. She gave her hundred percent but the accent issue was there with her too. She did not sound natural. Sahir did a fabulous job with his powerful vocals but to me the song was not the dancey funky type which they aimed to created. But since it is the time of internet sensations it may go out to be among the best for the season. Who knows!

Mujh Se Pehli Si Muhabbat:

A tribute was paid to the real queen of melody Malika E Taranum Noor Jehan by Humera Channa and Nabeel Shaukat. Music was directed by Meekal Hassan band. The best song of the episode hands down. Humera’s voice seemed as soothing as Madam Noor Jehan’s in original and Nabeel’s vocals were a treatful addition. They both nailed it. A best selection of duo for the said song. Music was so according to the vocals of the singers. A good one indeed!

Which song did you people like in this episode and which one you thought could have been better? Share your thoughts in comments!

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 2 Review- Better Than First!

0

Coke Studio episode 10 aired today and it also consisted of four songs: Tinak Dhin, Sayonee, Faasle and Jaan e Bahaaraan. The artists included Ali Hamza, Ali Sethi, Waqar Ehsin, Ali Noor, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Salman Ahmed, Qurutulain Baloch, Kaavish and Ali Zafar. This episode was a blend of goods and bads. Lets break it down song by song.

Tinak Dhin:

Music director of Tinak Dhin was Ali Hamza who has written the lyrics of the song as well. It was performed by Ali Hamza, Ali Sethi and Waqar Ehsin. Tinak Dhin had a very 90’s party song feels and will be perfect for cardio exercises and long drives. Ali Sethi was fabulous in this one too and debut singer Waqar Ehsin was the best among the lot, a good debut from his side. Though Ali himself was the man behind the symphony, I didn’t like his vocals in the song. All in all this was a good one.

Sayonee:

Music director is Salman Ahmed. If I can sum up this Coke Studio rendition in one line it would be:”I missed you Ali Azmat!”. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is no doubt a legend and his voice his hands down magical but its not made for a song like Sayonee. Even Ali Noor didn’t do justice to the song. Only the music was good because it was done by Salman himself. This one is a disappointment! A very bad combo of singers I guess, two doctors made to work the job of an engineer to explain it simply. Ali Noor has rustic voice that is why he sounded a bit better though.

Faasle:

Music director is Jaffer Zaidi. The song was performed by Qurutulain Baloch and Kaavish. It was a good one. It was soothing and soulful. Best combo of artists. Kaavish did a satisfactory job and Qurutulain showed once again why is she one of the best singers we have. She actually increases the level of every song with the strong tone of her vocals. Music was balanced and vocals were awesome. This one was okay. Sahi hai Acha hai in short! Not the best but not bad either.

Jaan e Bahaaraan:

Music director is Shuja Haider. It was a tribute to Master Inayat Hussain who was the original composer of the song. Ali Zafar proved why is he considered the rock star of the industry. He sang the song beautifully and to be honest the best part about Jaan e Bahaaraan was the music. The music had an Arabic undertone and it made me love the song. It was a good tribute, well structured and well sung. Baby brother really needs some classes from Big B.

This episode was definitely better than the first one but was any performance MIND BLOWING? Not for me atleast. More is to come lets see what happens. Which song did you people like? Share in the comments section!

Coke Studio Season 10 Episode 1 Review-Below Average!

0

Coke Studio is undoubtedly the best music platform we have in Pakistan. Many singers have become stars and has gotten a status which is not possible otherwise in the current situation of music industry. This year Coke Studio has completed its ten year run and the line up of the artists didn’t really impress me. Why? You’ll know as the review progresses. So the Coke Studio started this year with a patriotic song again but this it was not a national song but the National Anthem. Here is your Coke Studio version of National Anthem:

Many may have liked it but I am not very high on liking on this performance. Everyone is humming the Anthem like it is some kind of sad song. That is not the way to recite your National Anthem. One should always recite it in the way that brings out passion and patriotism in a person and not the urge to cry your eyes out. Even Coke Studio should not get away with it.

Now coming to the first episode we got four songs: Ranjish Hi Sahi, Muntazir, Chha Rahi Kaali Ghata, Allah u Akbar.

Allah u Akbar:

Music director was Shuja Haider and the song was sung by Ahmed Jahanzeb and Shafqat Amanat Ali. Its from the Qawwali genre of Coke Studio. Was it good? Aaah Average I would say! Many people would disagree again but once you set your standard to Chaap Tilak and Tajdar e Haram, you cannot expect the audience to settle for anything less. Ahmed’s performance was better than Shafqat by a few points but it was in no way a 10/10 performance.

Ranjish Hi Sahi:

Music is directed by Jaffer Zaidi. So far the best one in Coke Studio 10. Ali Sethi performed really well. It was a tribute to Mehdi Hassan Sahab and Ali did a fabulous job. His soft notes and way of singing did justice to Mehdi Sahab’s ghazal. Ghazals should always calm a person when they listen to them and Ali just did the thing. Ali is really talented and he proved his mettle once again in this song.

Chaa Rahi Kaali Ghata:

Music director is Sahir Ali Bagga. Simple verdict, it was below average. Not Coke Studio material. Only saving grace was Hina Nasrullah’s performance. I was expecting better from Amanat but he didn’t live upto the expectations. In most parts of the song Amanat’s voice was buried under heavy music. Things could have been better in this one.

Muntazir:

Muic director are Strings. Audience remained Muntazir that Danyal’s voice will somehow come out from under the heavy music and maybe a bit less auto-tuned. Momina has already got a lot of appreciation for her good looks and I think that is enough now and she should try to strive on her singing rather than her looks. And how Danyal got to Coke Studio in the first place. Bottom line: Worst song ever!

Coke Studio Season 10 Ends By Paying Tribute To Junaid Jamshed

Coke Studio season 10 has ended on a beautiful note by paying tribute to the legend, the man who left too soon, Junaid Jamshed. Despite some disappointing numbers in the midst of this season, the end could not have been more fitting, more appropriate or more touching.

”Us Rah Par” by the late artist was recreated by Ali Hamza and Ali Zafar and it reminded of an era when Junaid Jamshed was a newly rising star and it was just one of the numbers that helped him gain immense popularity. Later, however, whenever you hear this song, it reminds of a man who truly never walked on the commonly treaded path. A man who turned around full circle from the road that was leading him upwards and onwards was no ordinary one.

The song is produced by Strings, directed by Jaffar Zaidi and the original composition and lyrics was by Shoaib Mansoor, one of the first friends that Junaid Jamshed had in the showbiz industry. Their history goes long back to the days when the two struggled to be noticed as young men full of creativity and art. After his religious transformation, Junaid Jamshed had fall outs with a lot of his old friends. After his death , though, everyone remembers him for his finesse, loyalty and generosity which was unprecedented both in the world of media and religion in Pakistan.

For the one who always wanted to carve out his own journey. From Shoaib Mansoor, Ali Zafar, Ali Hamza, Strings, Coke Studio and all of Pakistan. May his soul reach the destination where he wanted it lead.

Coke Studio Pays Truibute To Amir Zaki

Coke Studio season 10 remembers Amir Zaki in a poignant performance in its latest episode. The legend has passed away earlier this year and “naina moray” captures the essence of his  art beautifully. It has an amalgamation of new and old musical instruments weaved together in a very coordinated way.

“Naina Moray” is directed by Jaffer Zaidi, and the vocals are by Javed Bashir and Akbar Ali. It also includes glimpses of Amir Zaki solo on his guitar. The song is about heartbreak and pain and sadly, this is the last of Amir Zaki that we will ever see.

He took part in a show Azm-i-Alishan, judged by Strings, where Bilal Maqsood, lead guitarist and vocalist of Strings asked him to play with them on a session. Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail’s brilliance vs Strings’ destitute

So after straight producing 4th Season of coke studio I thought strings would have learned something but instead they continued their practice to ruin Rohail’s Legacy. The reason why coke studio built its strong pillars in Pakistan is only because of Rohail’s magical compositions. The idea devised by Rohail Hayatt for synthesizing different genre of music into one song actually clicked and since then the core impression on which Coke Studio marks itself as signature or show reel of Pakistani Music Industry is only because of fusion. After Rohail Hayatt handed over the production to strings from season 7 it was expected that strings will be able continue his legacy but unfortunately they trade the diversity of music through glamour. Instead of promoting diverse music they destroyed the art through commercialisation by bringing fresh charming faces in limelight and producing substandard music with no or less fusion.

Season 10! Analysis

Consequently in season 10 as well Strings followed the same practice to experiment music with different music directors and that’s exactly where they are doing it all wrong. Most of the renditions in this season were pretty average with less or no fusion at all. Only four songs in my view meet the level of Coke Studio.

1) Baazi sung by Aima baig and Sahir Ali Bhagga: Sahir Bhagga did a pretty well job by blending funky type music into saraiki song. The variations included in music were all on point. Aima sparkled magnificently with her vocals and displayed her range with full confidence. Hands down to bhagga sahab for his vocals and the grooves he gave in his music composition is simply splendid. No doubt the audience is still enjoying this up beat song and evidence are more than 5 million views on YouTube.

Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail's brilliance vs Strings' destitute

2) Naina Moray sung by Ali Akbar and Javed Bashir ft Amir Zaki: This song fulfilled all levels of Coke Studio. Jaffer Zaidi is a part of coke studio almost from its inception and retaining his man-oeuvre he knew how to direct a classic melody. Ali Akbar and Javed Bashir both are maestro in crooning classic genre. We have also witnessed Amir Zaki last performance and grieve still prevails over his loss.

Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail's brilliance vs Strings' destitute

3) Mujhse pheli si Muhabbat sung by Humaira Channa and Nabeel Shaukat: Ok it is one of my fav noor jehan’s track and I am glad how well Humaira and Nabeel had performed it with their soothing vocals. It is always a treat to listen to Nabeel’s voice. Meekal Hasan did a great job in music composition and I feel like I was listening to Coke Studio Stuff.

Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail's brilliance vs Strings' destitute

4) Sab Maya hai sung by Sanwal Esakhelwi and Ata Ullah Khan Esakhelwi: Now this is the only song that reminds of me Rohail’s Era. I am seriously addicted to it. I must applaud Shuja Haider for his pitch perfect composition, love the way he blended too songs “ishq Pawaiyan Zanjeera” and “Sab Maya hai” in one rendition. No Introduction needed for the legend ata ullah sahab and his son Sanwal was also fabulous with his sharp clear vocals. In my Opinion this is song of the season.

Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail's brilliance vs Strings' destitute

Rohail vs Strings

Coke Studio Analysis! Rohail's brilliance vs Strings' destitute

Listening Coke Studio from Season 1 to 6 and then listening it from Season 7 to 10 a sheer difference can be spotted in music arrangements that clarifies strings completely lost the track. There are many grey areas that strings need to consider and figure out why they are constantly failing to produce successful seasons. Some of the things I pointed out are as follows:

Music Composition: Renditions produced by Rohail Hayatt are absolutely soul stirring like “Ishq Abhe Awalla sung by Meesha and Chakwal Group” I still wonder how Rohail conformed natural voices of Chakwal Group with Meesha’s voice and blended it with jazzy music. This is something strings can never produce or even think of it. Similarly listening to “Chori Chori by Meesha Shafi” from Season 3 will send shivers to your spine and furthermore if you listen to songs like “Kinara by Atif Aslam and Ustad Riaz Khan”, “Jugni by Arif Lohar”, “Charkha Nolakha by Umair Jaswal and Atif Aslam”, “Jal Pari by Atif Aslam”, “Aik Alif by Saeen Zahoor and noori”, “Panchi by Jal and QB” you will be amazed to know how Rohail improvised art in all these compositions that sounds so different yet entrancing.

On the other hand Strings are still assessing how to fuse different genre of music. Most of the renditions produced by them were flat with monotonous melody. They are unable to catch the theme of coke studio. Even if they are trying to copy Rohail they are dwindling in it as well. If you have listened to “Garaj Baras by Rahat and Ali Azmat” in coke studio season 1. Rohail hayat let Ali Azmat to play his original even without any changes in basic music composition. Rahat was chosen just to fuse his raag with the original and that actually worked a great deal. Strings and Salman tried to copy the idea of rohail in “sayonee” but it failed miserably because they let Rahat to sing the actual song. With Salman’s electric guitar the idea would have worked only if Ali Noor had performed it solo while Rahat would only be allowed to create magic with his raag. Moreover in this season they also destroyed masterpieces like Lal Meri Pat and Dum Mast Qalandar no wonder most of the performances relied heavily on electric guitar

In one of the interview QB stated that vocalists were just as involved in music composition as other musicians under Rohail’s direction. This made sure that finished product was something to which everyone agreed upon, this basically does not happen in Strings Era. It is actually true by looking closely to BTS, it can be analysed that under String’s direction singers were not part of music compostions and in contrast just watch BTS of “Ik Arzu by Jal”, “Bolo Bolo by EP”, “Kirr Kirr by Sajjad Ali” and you can see how singers were given liberty by Rohail to conform music arrangements as per their will.

Introducing talent: Rohail’s passion was to locate remote raw talent and promote them like Chakwal Group, Saeein Zahoor, Tahir Mithu, Sanam Marvi, Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad etc. Whilst strings focused on bringing young female faces on alluring screens and give them more and more performances in order to attract audience. In Season 8 they introduced Gul Panra, then Mominah in Season 9 and now Aima in Season 10 which indicates they are simply transacting glamour against art.

Failing to utilise Juggernauts of Music industry: I was so excited to hear that big names like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Ali Zafar and Sajjad Ali will be a part of Season 10 but unfortunately none of them fulfilled the expectation. All Songs sung by them in this season hardly received any acclaims from audience instead Rahat was heavily criticised on experimenting his vocals on “Sayonee” song. Shafqat failed to mesmerize audience and so Sajjad Ali. Four songs were given to Ali Zafar in this season and except the last “Us Rah Par” which was a tribute to Junaid Jamshed none of his performances attracted the audience. I don’t understand what Ali Zafar tried to achieve with songs like “Julie” and “Rockstar”.

In contrast just listen to the songs below and see how Rohail expolited the talent of big names of the industry.

In the end I will just like to say “Strings nahi hota tujhse chase” what are your views on it?

Let’s see what engaging songs does fourth episode produces.

Coke Kahani Last Episode- A Wonderful Journey!

0

I still cannot believe this show ended so abruptly! It was one of the best shows on air. It was a lighthearted show which always managed to cheer up my mood whenever I saw it. Each and every episode of this series is very special to me. I can re watch this series anytime and I really hope they come up with a second season!

Each and every actor of this show has given a great performance. My favorite characters were Nusrat and Mutmain Sahab aka Shamim Hilali and Syed Mohammad Ahmed. They created magic with their amazing chemistry! Sonia Rehman and Faisal Rehman also did a great job as Maya and Asfand. They were reunited by their daughter Zoya after many years of separation. It took time but they were finally able to settle their differences. I was happy to see that Asfand finally opened up to Maya and shared his problems with her. He was ready to leave everything and move to Florida with her. This made Maya realize how much he loves her and she decided to stay back. Zoya was the happiest to hear this as it was her dream to get her parents back together.

coke kahani

Saad finally got the guts to propose Ruqaiya just hours before her flight. He was adamant on getting married to her before her departure! It was the cutest scene of the episode. His Gujrati proposal was unique and impressive enough to make Ruqaiya say yes to him. Way to go Saad!
We saw a completely different Beydil in this episode. He had finally become responsible and caring. He is no longer the useless person whose only work was to do Shayari. He helped Maria when she needed financial help instead of buying the car he had been saving for. Maria was surprised and happy to see the change in Beydil. They make an adorable couple! Yasir Hussain and Maheen Rizvi as Beydil and Maria have done a very good job! Adnan Jaffer as Jugnoo has also performed brilliantly. We saw him in a completely different role and he was able to do justice to it. I missed him in the last episode!

ck

Now coming to Zoya and Rayaan aka Syra Yousuf and Ahmed Zeb! They both have acted brilliantly in this show. Ahmed Zeb’s performance did not look like a newcomers’ performance at all. They both have worked hard and it was visible on screen. Zoya and Rayaan both were surprised when their parents started asking them if they were interested in each other. Their first reaction was shock, and then they thought about it and considered the possibility of it in the future. This means they are definitely interested in each other. Zoya was also happy to see the change in Rayaan. He had finally become responsible and has left his care free attitude towards life. Behroze Sabzwari’s guest entry was a pleasant surprise and it was a very enjoyable scene!

coke

Overall, this series deserves a 10/10. We finally got to see something different and unique and the credit goes to Mehreen Jabbar who came up with such an innovative concept. Mohammad Ahmad’s script was simply fantastic and Mehreen Jabbar’s direction gave life and soul to it. I really hope we get to see more sitcoms like this in the future! It was a breath of fresh air for me as it was different from the other depressing dramas on air. The comedy shows on air needs to learn something from this show. This show has brought a revolution to sitcoms. I am really going to miss this show!

Coke Kahani Episode 9 – Bondings

0

Another mind blowing episode! Coke Kahani fulfils all the requirement of a ‘must watch’ show. It has humor, a good story, brilliant actors and an amazing director who has introduced a new kind of show to the audience.
Asfand and Maya are slowly opening up to each other and we saw a lot of development in their relationship in this episode. Asfand told Maya to accept the fact that she still loves him like before and it is obvious that she still does. The misunderstanding is finally getting cleared and they are getting more and more comfortable with each other and the rift between them is finally fading away. But the question is will Maya stay back with Asfand now that all misunderstandings are clear or would she go back to Florida?
The most hilarious part of the show was when Saad was ‘describing’ Ruqaiya to Murtaza. It made me laugh till I had tears in my eyes. It was a treat to watch! Saad’s guilty expressions when he was being scolded by Ruqaiya, Rayaan and Zoya were extremely cute. Saad and Ruqaiya both look great together and I look forward to their scenes. Saad is just too thickheaded to realize how much Ruqaiya likes him. I agree with Rayaan when he told Ruqaiya: ‘Iske ilawa sab ko pata hai tum isse kiya kehna chahti ho’. So true!
Saad is finally noticing Ruqaiya but it is still very hard to tell at this stage whether Saad likes Ruqaiya back or not. I hope he does! They make a nice couple.
We got to see a very stubborn side of Maya, she refused to go to the restaurant opening because nobody invited her. She got so upset when she thought she was not invited to the restaurant opening but what she did not know was that a surprise was in store for her. Another heart-warming scene! Nazia also clears the air about her and Asfand’s relationship which was very important for Maya to know to clear the doubts in her mind about Asfand.
I really do not want Jugnoo to leave the restaurant. I hope he stays back! Maria’s advice to Beydil to try to take Jugnoo’s place as the Chef was laughable. Beydil is not at all experienced and I doubt he knows anything other than his famous ‘shayari’.
Mutmain Sahab is one of my favorite characters in this show. He is currently feeling useless because Nusrat has joined university. He misses her company and the petty fights which kept them both busy. I loved the father son bonding when Rayaan tried to console his father. Till now, Mutmain Sahab was only seen scolding Rayaan about one thing or the other but now we saw an endearing bond between them. I hope we get to see more scenes like these.
Rayaan should listen to Zoya’s advice and start thinking seriously about life and his career. I hope Zoya is able to put some sense into Rayaan! And I hope they end up liking each other too. They look nice together.
Overall, it was a good episode. I am looking forward to the next episode as we would see the introduction of Nusrat’s young university friend and Mutmain Sahab’s reaction, so stay tuned!

Coke Kahani Episode 8 – Jealousy and Possessiveness

0

Another perfect episode! Everyone is trying their best to patch things up between Asfand and Maya but all their plans are backfiring. First it was Saad’s letter and Beydil’s pathetic shayari and now the oldest trick in the book: Jealousy.
Maya and her jealousy was a treat to watch. She was shocked to see Nazia at her house and talking about Asfand as if she knew him very well. She tried her best not to show her jealousy but her expressions told another story. Nazia was sent there by Mutmain Sahab (she is the same tenant he is flirting with all the time). Poor Asfand doesn’t even know her. The scene where Maya asks about Nazia from Asfand and Asfand’s clueless expressions was hilarious and the blame game after that from Nawab to Zoya to Mutmain Sahab was too good. Mutmain Sahab had set this whole thing up to make Maya jealous and possessive about Asfand. She did get very possessive and kept asking about Nazia indirectly from Asfand. I really hope this strategy does not backfire and create more misunderstanding between Asfand and Maya.

After watching this episode, I have a feeling Asfand was at fault more than Maya. We saw Maya reminding him of his mistakes. He never gave any time to his family, he was so busy with his own life mainly his restaurant. He was never there for Maya when she needed him the most. Asfand also realizes that he was at fault and tells her to forget everything and start over. They have finally started to open up about their feelings and this is one step forward for clearing the misunderstandings. Things will sort out if they just talk about it instead of giving each other the silent treatment. They both have spent the hardest time of their lives alone. Will it be easy for them to forget 16 years of hard feelings and heartache and accept each other again?

Now coming to the best part of the episode! Nusrat and Mutmain Sahab were the highlight of the episode. Nusrat has finally started her university and the way Mutmain Sahab treats her made me laugh. The best scene of the episode for me was when he was sending his ‘wife‘ to university and instructing her like a small kid. Their chemistry is just amazing! Hats off to both of them!

Zoya’s efforts have paid off and she is finally launching the revamped restaurant. The scene where Maria comes to ask about Beydil’s salary was extremely cute. I pity both Maria and Ruqaiya. The guys they both like are too thick in the head to realize how much these two girl like them. One is the biggest flirt on planet and spends day and night sending shayari to every girl possible and the other is too busy with his ‘burger’ girlfriend. Zoya advised Ruqaiya to tell Saad about her feelings but then she imagined his laughing face and took her advice back. Since we are seeing so many adorable couples, I now want to see Zoya and Rayaan scenes. I really like their chemistry. I hope we get to see more of them.

The preview for the next episode looked promising. Asfand asks Maya to accept that she still loves him the same way since the past 25years. Will she accept this? And the best part is that Maya thinks she is not invited to the restaurant’s opening. Will Asfand finally invite her? Will she go to the opening? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Tune into Coke Kahani next week to find out.

Coke Kahani Episode 7 – Mission accomplished!

0

Do I have to say again what an amazing show this is? It is 15 to 20 minutes of pure pleasure. Each character has its own charm and there is not a single scene that makes you bored. All the actors in this show have performed brilliantly and given their 100 percent, the new comers as well as the old ones. I never thought Muhammad Ahmed or Shamim Hilali would be able to do such good comedy. I have usually seen Shamim Hilali in negative or serious characters. Sonia Rehman and Faisal Rehman both are looking great together and so are Yasir Hussain and Maheen Rizvi as Beydil and Maria, and not to forget the ever green Jugno uncle played by Adnan Jaffer. Everyone’s comic timing is outstanding!

Now coming to the episode, Zoya is still trying to patch things up between her parents. She wants them to spend quality time with each other and sort things out. Asfand is trying his best to win over Maya. Poor guy is trying to make food to impress her! And the best part of the episode was the ‘shayari’ that Saad took from Beydil’s phone. I just could not stop laughing at this scene. It goes like:
“Kis Baat pe Khafa Ho, Mujhko Kiun Nahi Batati
Khuwaabo Main Aati Ho, Kamray Main Kiun Nahi Aati”

This scene is a must watch! The look on Asfand’s face when he read the card was priceless.

Saad is so blind. How can he not see that Ruqaiya likes him! Their car scene was a cute, lighthearted scene. Ruqaiya’s mum is again pestering her to meet a guy. Saad asks her if she wants to marry someone else, and she imagined confessing to him that she wants to marry him. This scene was extremely funny!

Rayaan has finally succeeded to get a sponsor. And who is the sponsor? Coca Cola of course! They are the actual sponsors of this show too. They have no doubt invested a lot in this show. Muhammad Ahmed’s script and Mehreen Jabbar’s direction has turned it into a master piece. I always thought Mehreen Jabbar was more of a serious director. She always did the same genre of plays like Vasl and Malaal. It is good to see that she is also very versatile. I never thought she could portray comedy so well on screen, and not to forget the dialogues. They are absolutely fantastic!

Another scene worth mentioning is the one where Saad, Ruqaiya, Zoya and Rayaan are interviewing people to employ in Al fonso. The magicians, the dancers, and that weird guy with the guitar, they all were hilarious! Another must watch scene.
It is still not clear why Maya left Asfand. They are trying to create an air of mystery around Asfand and Maya’s relationship. We got more insight as to why Maya left Asfand. She thinks that Asfand is an indifferent and a useless person who has not done a single thing properly in his life. We also got to see Asfand angry at Maya for the first time, he clearly tells her that you may think I am useless and indifferent but in reality I am just a very patient person. This is true! Asfand is seen as a very calm and patient person who rarely loses his composure. Maya was also seen trying to make Zoya admit of her intentions of patching things up between her parents. Zoya somehow managed to convince her mother that she has no such intentions. Phew! That was a close call.

Maya’s anger has also dissolved overtime. She is finally speaking to Asfand politely. She keeps on pestering him to tell the reason behind the selling of his restaurant. But everything he manages to change the topic. Why is he not telling her the reason? I guess it is because he does not want her to know that he took a loan for Zoya’s education. My guess is that he does not want Maya to feel bad or guilty about his situation.

How can I forget to mention Nusrat and Mutmain Sahab! I love the way Nusrat gets jealous when Mutmain Sahab goes to Nazia’s place (their tenant). These two are extremely cute! I am curious to know who this Nazia is now. Is she a friend of Asfand? There was pure jealousy on Maya’s face when she came searching for Asfand at their house. Let’s see what is in store for us next week! Till then, have a wonderful week!

Coke Kahani Episode 6 – Mission Patch up!

0

This show is always a treat to watch. I always have a smile on my face when I am watching it. Amidst all the serious dramas on TV nowadays, a lighthearted show like Coke kahani is always welcomed. This show is a combined effort of a brilliant director and hardworking actors. The script and dialogues both are well written.

Now coming to the episode, Maya overheard Rayaan and Zoya’s conversation. Now she knows what Zoya wants and that she has an ulterior motive to stay in Pakistan. Now Rayaan, Zoya, Saad and Ruqaiya are on a mission! They want to patch up things between Zoya’s parents. The precap seems interesting. Saad wrote a hilarious love letter to Maya on behalf of Asfand and Asfand got a good bashing as a reply from Maya. Poor Asfand did not have a clue about what was happening!
We also got an insight to the reason why Asfand and Maya separated. Maya did not want to stay in Pakistan because of its worsening condition and Asfand did not want to leave Pakistan. He did not want to leave his forefather’s house and restaurant. Both are right in their own places. Maya wants security which she does not find here while Asfand gives importance to his values. Maya and Asfand have come to a kind of truce now. They are no longer fighting and making decisions on behalf of Zoya. Asfand and Maya have decided that they would let Zoya reach to a decision by herself without pressuring her in anyway. I think this is a really good decision.

Zoya is getting more desperate by the day to arrange money to revamp the restaurant. She is thinking of taking a loan despite her promise to Asfand that she would not take one. Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Let’s see if she is able to find a sponsor or would she would end up taking a loan.

The highlight of the show was Mr and Mrs Mutmain, they are also attempting to patch up things between Asfand and Maya. Their scenes make you laugh like anything. I loved the scene when they both took Maya to a mall and she got scared when she heard a sound that seemed like a bomb blast. everyone who comes from outside behave the same way since everything is so exaggerated in the news. Now coming to the three employees of Al fonso, Maria is interested in Bedil the ‘ultimate’ flirt. Wow! I did not expect this. Bedil, however is unaware of her feelings while Jugnoo knows about it. I love the way Bedil teases Jugnoo. Jugnoo was trying to learn German secretly, but Bedil exposed his secret. These three are the cutest. I simply love their cute fights.

Ruqaiya, her mom and not to forget their ‘gujrati’. I could not stop laughing at this scene. Ruqaiya’s mom wants her to get married because she thinks she will ‘run away’ with some guy. Zoya was somehow able to convince her to give Ruqaiya some more time. I loved the scene when she imagines the kind of guy her mother would select for her. Poor Ruqaiya!

Every single scene of this episode was superb. There was nothing unnecessary or boring. Each character in this play has its own charm and makes you laugh. I am still not able to choose one as my favorite. I find each of them interesting and funny.
Will Zoya be able to get money to revamp the restaurant? Will her efforts be successful in patching up her parents? To find out tune into Coke Kahani next week on Saturday!

Coke Kahani Episode 5 – Family Reunion

0

Amazing episode! I am getting addicted to this show now. The director, writer and actors, all have done a brilliant job and you can clearly see this in the end product. The way the show is presented is different. The credit goes to Mehreen Jabbar, of course, for giving us a refreshing play.

Maya is back! She has come all the way from Florida to take Zoya back with her. Zoya hesitates but Maya is determined. She wants to leave immediately but destiny has its own plans. She slips and ends up getting a pretty bad sprain on her foot. The funny part was when Asfand offered to pick her up! She is twice your size, Asfand! How will you ever manage to pick her up? That scene was hilarious! She is not allowed to travel for 2 weeks now! Maya had plans to stay at Nusrat’s house (Rayaan’s parents) but is forced to stay at Asfand’s house because of her foot. Can things get any better for Zoya?

One could see the happiness on Asfand’s face when Maya came back. We got to see a new side of him. The serious Asfand is now laughing and joking, one can easily tell how happy he is to see Maya. He still loves Maya, and Maya also loves him back. She tries to pretend to be aloof and angry, but the way she looks at him speaks a different story altogether. The scene I found funny was when Asfand was drinking tea and he saw Maya looking at him through the window. He was so surprised that he spilled all his tea on himself. God! Asfand is so cute! Maya couldn’t help but smile and remember the same incident happening in the past.

Zoya also confesses to Asfand that her views about him were totally wrong. She always thought that he was a careless and selfish person and it was because of him that Maya left and went away to Florida, but after getting to know him, she knows now that he is not entirely at fault. She also thought that he lived a very carefree and luxurious life, but now she knows better. She also told Maya that she thinks Asfand is a very caring person and the reason why he does not share his problems is because he does not want to worry anyone. Zoya is starting to get to know Asfand better now. I love the new found bond between these two!

“Maya mujhe dekhte hee phisal gaee”, nice sense of humor Asfand! I couldn’t help but laugh at his dialogue when he said it to Mutmaeen Sahab. I also liked Nusrat’s dialogue, “Neeyat mein sachai aur awaaz mein dard ho to har cheez mumkin hai”. Nusrat believed that Maya would stay back if Asfand asks her. But will Asfand ever ask her to come back in his life? What happened between them in the past?
Zoya asked for 15 days from Asfand to try to patch things up between him and Maya. Asfand agreed, but will it be easy to remove the distance between these two? Will they ever be together again? Zoya shares her worries with Rayaan that this her last chance to get her parents to patch up, she is scared that her attempts would fail. Maya overhears this; will she fulfill Zoya’s wishes and make an attempt to make things better between her and Asfand?

The precap seems captivating. Rayaan, Saad and Zoya are trying to come up with ways to patch things up between Zoya’s parents. Will Zoya be successful? Tune into Coke Kahani next week to find out!

Coke Kahani Episode 12 – Mission Successful!

Another hit episode! The credit goes to the wonderful cast and crew, as well as the superb director who never fails to surprise us. Rayaan was the star of the episode. He finally took an initiative to change people around him. He started off with Current and his friend, Guddu. He was able to convince them to give 9th grade board exams. They were reluctant at first, as it was a big decision for them to start their studies again as they were the main bread winners of their family, but Rayaan’s optimism took a toll on them and they agreed. Rayaan decided to teach them himself and worked day and night to help them as they had to start everything from scratch. But with Rayaan’s parents support and help he was able to teach them. Rayaan’s parents seemed like the most proud parents ever. They were very happy with Rayaan’s decision to help Current and Guddu. Rayaan is finally becoming more responsible and looking at life from a new perspective and his parents are proud of his effort! The lesson for us is that we should all be like Rayaan and take an initiative to help and improve people instead of criticizing them. Great work Rayaan!

Beydil’s hard work has finally paid off and he is able to satisfy the ‘never satisfying’ Chef of Alfonso. Jugnoo had been very strict with Beydil but it helped him to learn and improve. Maria was seen supporting Beydil throughout his training. We saw a sweet bonding moment between Jugnoo and Beydil. The enemies had finally become friends! The sweetest scene of the episode for me! Jugnoo had officially handed over his Chef cap to Beydil and is off to Germany. I am definitely going to miss him! Each and every character of this play is very special.

Asfand is also seen encouraging Zoya when she has doubts in her mind of her ability to run the restaurant successfully. But Asfand tells her to be optimistic and not give up so easily. Zoya also has pressure from Maya’s side as she wants Zoya to go back to Florida with her. Asfand and Maya’s relationship had gotten better but suddenly it has returned to its former state. Asfand is being aloof and is refusing to share his problems with Maya. Maya is angry and upset with him as he wouldn’t share his problems and has stopped talking to him. Will their strained relationship ever get better? Will Maya stay back or will she take Zoya back to Florida with her? Zoya really wants to see her family back together. I really hope her wish ever comes true soon!

I was surprised to know that Ruqaiya knew since the beginning why Saad had taken her out for a date. She had always liked Saad but according to her, now it is too late as she wants to go abroad for her Masters. She again took Zoya’s help to convince her mother and surprisingly, she agreed without fussing much. I really did not expect that. I was relying on her to stop Ruqaiya from going and I think even Saad had the same hope. Ruqaiya’s mothers’ comments about Saad were hilarious! It seems like she does not have a very good reputation of Saad in her eyes. Poor Saad seemed extremely upset at the news that Ruqaiya was going abroad for her Masters and her mother has also given her approval. I am sure Saad will do something to stop Ruqaiya from going. He would not give up so easily. Saad can be really unpredictable at times.

The preview for the next episode seems interesting. A lot of things are coming up so don’t forget to watch Coke Kahani next week!

Coke Kahani Episode 11 – Positive Changes

0

Coke Kahani always manages to leave me speechless. It has humor as well as a concept that we can observe around us and which makes it more interesting. Rayaan and the new character Current’s bonding was a very enjoyable scene. Poor Rayaan thought that the guy on the motorcycle is coming towards him to steal his cell phone, but he realized that there is still humanity left in people and everybody in Pakistan are not as he imagined; ill mannered and selfish. There are still some people who help others just for the sake of doing a good deed and do not have an ulterior motive. He met such a person in the form of Current, the mechanic who helped him when he was stranded alone on a very dangerous road when his car broke down. For the first time, Rayaan had the desire to change people in his country instead of criticizing them. Current and his ‘fluent’ English was definitely a pleasure to watch! I am looking forward to more scenes of Current and Rayaan.
The thick headed Saad has finally realized that he likes Ruqaiya. Phew! At the speed he was going, I thought this day would never come. Zoya gives Saad some tips on ‘How to confess to a girl’ and her first tip to Saad was ‘not to behave like your own self’. Her tips were hilarious! Saad and Zoya share a cute bonding which makes you smile when they are on screen. However, Saad’s attempt to take Ruqaiya on a date was a huge flop as Ruqaiya had no idea what had come over Saad all of a sudden. The soft music, the presentable attire, the clean car and mannered behavior was very new to her and it left her boggled. And just when the poor guy was about to confess his feelings, she threw the bomb at him and told him that she was going back abroad for her Masters. Saad’s expressions on this news were mind blowing! I could not help but feel bad for him. The preview for the next episode seems hilarious. Saad goes to Ruqaiya’s mother and tell her to get him married to her daughter otherwise he will run away with her! The poor woman could not believe her ears.
We finally saw what I was waiting for so long. Mutmain Sahab and Nusrat are curious on Rayaan’s whereabouts and thinks that there is something cooking between Rayaan and Zoya. Even Maya has noticed that Rayaan and Zoya spend all of their time together and thinks something is fishy. The only one not to notice is Asfand, such an idea has not crossed his mind and he seemed surprised at the possibility. I am glad they are finally paying attention to Zoya and Rayaan. They will definitely look great together!
Asfand really needs to grow up. He wants to face all the worries alone and refuses to share his problems with anyone. This is what irritates Maya the most, and we saw a huge fight between them when she asked him to share his troubles. Maya got really upset and suddenly made the decision to go back to Florida and asked Zoya to come with her. Zoya was shocked at her sudden change of plans and started to get worried as she does not want her family to get separated again.
Asfand has got the notice from the bank and his restaurant will be sealed in a few days as he has not paid back the loan. He has resorted to the last means of saving his restaurant, that is to sell the paintings that he had inherited from his forefathers and which were very precious to him. Maya is also surprised at his decision to sell the paintings. Will he ever tell Maya about his troubles? Will Maya let go of her sudden decision to go back to Florida? I hope we get all the answers in the next episode! So keep watching Coke Kahani!

Coke Kahani Episode 10 – Happy Moments!

0

The highlight of the episode was Mutmain Sahab. I must say, Muhammad Ahmed sir has done a great job. He has not only written a very good story but acted brilliantly as well. Nusrat is extremely happy to join university but Mutmain Sahab is feeling left ignored and left out. His jealousy when he saw Nusrat’s new classmate, Junaid was a treat to watch. The most hilarious scene was when his imagination ran wild and he imagined both of them together in a garden. He kept an eye on Nusrat and Junaid while they were studying and did the most annoying things to interrupt them. Poor Junaid finally got fed up and went away. It was without any doubt, the best scene of the episode!
Can Saad be dumber? He went to clear things to Murtaza and ended up telling all his feelings about Ruqaiya to Murtaza. Murtaza was smart enough to understand that he clearly likes Ruqaiya and told him to tell about his feelings to Ruqaiya. Saad was shocked when Rayaan told him that he is a dolt not to realize that he loves Ruqaiya. The problem with Saad is that he is scared of being rejected by Ruqaiya. Will he finally confess his feelings now that he has realized them?
Jugnoo has agreed to teach Beydil and help him become a chef but he has kept certain conditions. It was like watching two enemies on the same field when Jugnoo started teaching Beydil. I hope Beydil is smart enough to learn from him carefully and make his future brighter. Maria convinced Jugnoo to teach him as she wants to marry Beydil when he is financially stable. But the problem is will the pea brained Beydil ever realize how much Maria likes him? Currently, his brain is only filled with shayari and his flirting techniques.
I am really surprised that Maya agreed to stay for another 2 months in Pakistan. I think there is a hidden motive behind it. Maya and Asfand are finally developing a bond and Maya has seen a ray of hope of being together with Asfand again as he is a changed man now. I hope Zoya’s dream is fulfilled and this family gets back together soon.
The father son bonding was an adorable scene. Mutmain Sahab was angry and hurt that Rayaan did not remember his birthday and gave him an emotional speech but Rayaan surprised him by getting a gift for him. He told his father to join the gym and become as physically fit as Junaid so that he would no longer be jealous of him. Mutmain Sahab was embarrassed to know that his son knows about his endeavors to annoy Nusrat’s classmate. These three are the perfect family!
I was surprised and happy to see Mahira Khan as a guest appearance in this episode. She played the girl who rejected Saad and ended up giving him a slap when he asked her out. It was an extremely funny scene; Poor Saad was rejected by a lot of girls. The preview for the next epsiode seems interesting. Saad is finally developing the guts to propose Ruqaiya before she goes back abroad for her masters. Asfand has more problems coming up his way as his restaurant would be sealed any day because he is unable to pay back his loan. Will they be able to save the restaurant? Tune into Coke Kahani next week to find out.

Coke Kahani – This is what we call a perfect sitcom!

0

It is not like the usual sitcoms that we see on Pakistani television. They are based on vulgar and repeated jokes. In their unsuccessful attempt to show comedy, they compromise the story. Coke Kahani is a package of comedy and drama.

The story of Coke Kahani revolves around a broken family. Zoya’s (Syra Yousuf) parents do not live together. Her father Asfand (Faisal Rahman) lives in Pakistan and operates a restaurant called ‘Alfonso’ while she and her mother Maya live in Florida. On her visit to Pakistan to meet her father, she gets to know that he is selling his restaurant which he had inherited from his forefathers. The reason was that he had taken a big loan to support Zoya’s education and now he was unable to pay it back. Zoya feels indebted to him and plans to stay back and revamp the restaurant with the help of her friends; Raiyaan, Saad and Ruqaiya.

These three are some interesting characters that we get to see in this play. Raiyaan is seen as a lazy and an irresponsible person who never misses a chance to escape work. His attempts are hilarious and you can’t help but pity him at times. Saad and Ruqaiya, however, are the exact opposite, they are more sensible and mature.

Other interesting characters are of Jugno, Maria and Bedil. They are the employees of Alfonso. Bedil is the biggest flirt ever and his failed attempt to do ‘shayari’ and his weird imagination makes one rolling with laughter. Jugno, on the other hand, never fails to show his ‘feminine’ side with his unusual streak for cleanliness. His scenes are also a treat to watch. Maria is shown as a sweet, bubbly character who has hidden from her family about where she works for some reason. Interesting… I am curious to know why?

How can anyone forget Mr and Mrs Mutmaeen (Raiyaan’s parents)? In this episode we got to see a lot of light hearted moments between them. Mrs Mutmaeen wants to join university to study ‘Urdu Adab’, Mr Mutmaeen’s reaction to this news was a pleasure to watch. Poor Mr Mutmaeen couldn’t believe what he was hearing and he started imagining her in university. I think I died laughing on this scene. It’s a must watch!

Zoya’s strained relationship with her father is finally getting better. It is said that ‘silence creates misunderstandings’ and I think this was the reason for Zoya and Asfand not being close, both avoided talking to each other. Zoya took an initiative to fill the gap and she is finally succeeding. Asfand has finally opened up to the idea of his restaurant getting revamped, he appreciates Zoya’s efforts. He has finally seen a ray of hope. However, Maya’s interference may cause problems. She is not in the favor of Zoya staying with Asfand. She came all the way from Florida just to take Zoya back. Will she be able to convince Zoya to go back with her?

Mr Mutmaeen had never missed a chance to scold or degrade his son (not in a serious way though, the scene are usually very hilarious) but in today’s episode we got to see a new side of him. He may be stern with Raiyaan because of his irresponsibility, but he has complete faith in his son that he will always respect his parents. We also got to see a new side of Raiyaan, he is shown as a hotheaded young guy who likes to blame everything on his country. I loved the way Zoya made him realize that a person usually gets angry to cover up his shortcomings. Maybe Zoya would be able to change Raiyaan… Let’s see.

Ruqaiya and Saad have chances of ending up as a couple. Interesting… I always thought there was a chance of both of them being together. Ruqaiya is interested in Saad but Saad is busy dating her ‘burger’ girlfriend. Poor Ruqaiya! Saad thinks she considers herself too good for him.

Mehreen Jabbar’s direction is flawless as usual, the story by Mohammad Ahmed is very well written and the screenplay is simply fantastic. This is what we call a quality play. Coke Kahani is a breath of fresh air for me.

So guys, what will happen now that Maya is back? Will Zoya will able to save Alfonso? Will we finally get to know why Asfand and Maya got separated?
A lot of things are coming up. So stay tuned to Coke Kahani!
