Renowned radio, TV and film actor Ghayyur Akhtar passed away on Friday in Lahore, Geo News reported.
According to sources, he suffered paralysis three years ago and was shifted to hospital last night after his condition deteriorated where the actor could not survive.
Ghayyur Akhtar started acting in the late 1970s and became famous during 1980s. His performances in drama serials such as ‘Khawaja and Sons’ ,‘Sona Chandi’ and ‘Ainak waala jin’ were highly appreciated.
Ghayyur was particularly famous for his acting abilities in comedy roles.
For his startling performance throughout his career, he also received Pride of Performance Award.

Qurratulain Hyder is perhaps the greatest novelist of urdu literature of all times. Born in 1928 in UP, British India she passed away in 2007 as Indian citizen. However in 1950’s and 60’s she lived in Pakistan as a pakistani citizen but later migrated back to India. Qurratulain Hyder was daughter of famous writers Sajjad Hyder Yildarim and Nazar Sajjad. Also known as Ainnie Aapa she never married throughout her life.
Maharaj Kathak
Maharaj Ghulam Hussain Kathak was a famous kathak dancer. Born in Calcutta in 1905 he migrated to Pakistan in 1960’s. Maharaj Kathak devoted his life for promotion of kathak dance, and trained many famous kathak dancers including naheed siddiqi, nighat chaudhary and fasihur rehman. Maharaj Kathak also acted in few dramas and films. He passed away in 2001.
Niaz Nayek
Niaz Nayek was a famous bureaucrat and diplomat. He was a prominent figure in back channel diplomacy with india. Niaz Nayek found dead under mysterious condition in his house in Islamabad in 2009. He was 82 year old at the time of his death.

Pakistani dramas have gained a large global audience in the last two decades. People within South Asia, as well as the Pakistani diaspora, love to follow these shows and their very realistic storylines. But with the increasing number of channels and dramas that air on three time slots, the quality of the product has been suffering for a while.
Many Pakistani dramas have fallen into the trap of formulaic storylines. Once a certain formula is a hit with the audience, unfortunately, all the stories start following that pattern to achieve high TRP and YouTube views. The biggest tropes we have seen on television are love triangles between the leads, as well as the ever-present saas-bahu issues, which never seem to die down. There is now another hit storyline in town, and it is the family rivalry. The two warring clans of different types have become the new favourite of Pakistani drama makers, and they are inserted in all stories in one way or another. Khaie
Khaie was an experiment gone right in the Pakistani drama realm. The story written by Saqlain Abbas was bloody, and Syed Wajahat Hussain made it look realistic with his top-notch direction. From casting to performances, everything went right with this drama. The whole country followed the family rivalry between Chinar Khan and Zamda, and fans were on the edge of their seats throughout the show’s phenomenal run. The success of Khaie injected this new idea of family rivalries into our drama writing.
Dunyapur
Dunyapur was another big-budget Pakistani drama that aired on Green TV. The show was based on the big rivalry between the Adam and Nawab clans. The three generations of the two families were entangled in a full-scale war, and they were killing each other off. The romantic track, alongside some very strong performances, made Dunyapur a hit with the audience. There have been talks about a second season for the show, and fans would love to see Shahmeer and Anaa come back to continue the blood bath.
Noor Jahan
Noor Jahan was another hit drama which looked like a simple saas-bahu story on the surface. It ended up becoming a lot more with the intrigues and mysteries intertwined with strong performances. Noor Jahan is a Pakistani drama where the basic plot revolves around the family rivalry between Noor Jahan and Noor Bano’s father. This is where the whole mess starts and then transcends two generations.

Main Manto Nahi Hoon is another big Pakistani drama that is airing on ARY Digital right now. The show has the biggest star cast possible, and it was able to hook the audience from the very opening. The drama was based on the rivalry between the Amritsari and Binyamin clans. Fans loved it, and it was the rivalry which hooked fans. With the recent detour of the show towards romance, the viewership has been affected. Views and ratings were skyrocketing with the family rivalry plot, and that is something fans wanted to see more of; thus, the formula was working.
Sanwal Yaar Piya
Sanwal Yaar Piya is one of the most anticipated Pakistani dramas of this season. After various cast changes and delays, the show came out with Ahmed Ali Akbar, Feroze Khan, and Durefishan Saleem in the lead. The drama is getting good numbers on both TRP charts and YouTube, and fans like the characters overall. The main conflict in the plot will be the family rivalry between Aliyar and Piya. Their fathers both have a history of crime, and they parted on not very good terms. Meanwhile, Ahmed Ali Akbar’s Sanwal will be the chain linking their past rivalry to the present. Tayyab Rizvi is married to Mehtab Bano. The couple has three daughters Parveen Rizvi, Nasreen Rizvi and Hina Rizvi and one son Syed Raza Ali Rizvi. The production house of Tayyab Rizvi was named after his three elder kids PNR (Parveen Nasreen Raza) productions. The most prominent name of Tayyab Rizvi family is Parveen Rizvi famously known as Sangeeta. Sangeeta is the elder daughter of Tayyab Rizvi and Mehtab Bano. Few say that Sangeeta is the daughter of elder sister of Mehtab Bano later adopted by Mehtab Bano and Tayyab Rizvi after Sangeeta’s parents passed away.
Sangeeta started her film career at a tender age in 1969 from the film Kangan (کنگّن). She appeared as heroine opposite Rehman who was a leading artist of Urdu cinema back then. It is said Sangeeta was merely 14-15 years old in her first film Kangan. Kangan was not much successful but it opened the doors of film world for Sangeeta. Afterwards Sangeeta acted in many Urdu and Punjabi films in 1970’s for different production houses in leading and secondary roles.
But like her parents Tayyab Rizvi and Mehtab Bano and brother Raza Ali Rizvi, Sangeeta was more inclined towards working in back-end of camera instead of front-end and thus she ventured into direction in 1976. Sangeeta is the most successful female director in the history of Pakistani cinema. She has directed more than 70 films in Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto.

Sangeeta started direction in 1976 with the super hit Urdu film Society Girl (سوسائٹی گرل) produced and distributed by her home production house PNR productions. As a director Sangeeta experimented with new subjects and themes. In this journey she was fully supported by her parents as well as her siblings. From mid 70’s till early 90’s her younger sister Nasreen Rizvi (Filmi Name is Kavita) worked in the lead roles in almost all of her films. Backed by her parents Tayyab Rizvi and Mehtab Bano, Sangeeta experimented with new and fresh subjects. Like the film Muthi Bhar Chaawal (مٹھی بھر چاول) in 1978 was based on the novel Ik Chaadar Meli Si of Rajendra Singh Bedi. Thori Si Bewafai (تھوڑی سی بے وفائی) in 1983 was the first Paksitani film shot in United States of America (USA).
In mid 1970’s Sangeeta married co-actor Humayun Qureshi. Humayun Qureshi was a popular villian of Urdu films as well as hero of Pashto films of that era. The couple has two daughters. Sangeeta and Humayun Qureshi parted their ways shortly afterwards. Both have been silent on their separation. Unlike her parents, Sangeeta has kept her daughters away from showbiz.
In 1980’s Urdu cinema suffered badly due to lack of viewership but Sangeeta continued the direction of Urdu films and refused the offer of Punjabi films. However in late 1980’s Sangeeta eventually also ventured into Punjabi films. Sangeeta took a break from direction in early 1990’s. In her first run as a director most of the films of Sangeeta were produced by her home production PNR productions. In 1990’s Sangeeta married again this time to film producer Naveed Akbar Butt.

Sangeeta returned to film making and direction in 1998 with the Urdu film Khilona (کھلونا) which proved super hit. After Khilona, Sangeeta directed further Urdu films like Aashqi Khel Nahin (عاشقی کھیل نہیں), Dream Girl (ڈریم گرل), Ehsaas (احساس), Nikaah (نکاح), Tarap (تڑپ), Gharana (گھرانہ). Apart from Nikaah none of the other Urdu film worked for Sangeeta and she again reverted to Punjabi cinema. Punjabi cinema of 2000 comprises of Gundasa and Gujjar movie and going against this trend Sangeeta experimented with a light romantic Punjabi film Reshman (ریشماں). Reshman was not much successful and finally going with the tide Sangeeta also directed many pulp Punjabi films in 2000’s like Sher-e-Lahore (شیرلاہور), Kuryan Shehr Diyan (کڑیاں شہر دیاں). Sangeeta also returned to acting from film Sher-e-Lahore in early 2000. Sangeeta also started working for the television and till date is working actively in the television dramas.
With the recent success of Urdu films in past few years, she is also directing a new film Tum Hi To Ho which will release in 2016.

Humayun Qureshi (ہمایوں قریشی)
Humayun Qureshi haling from Bannu, KPK is a leading artist of Pakistani Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto cinema. Starting form 1970’s he mostly worked in negative roles in Urdu and Punjabi films and as a hero in the Pashto films. Humayun Qureshi married Sangeeta in 1970’s, which was not successful. The couple has two daughters.

After the breakup with Sangeeta, in 1980’s Humayun Qureshi married again within his family. From this marriage he has a daughter Muqqaddas (مقدس). Muqqadas worked as a child star in the horror drama Haqeeqat aired in the late 1990’s.

Naveed Akbar Butt (نویداکبر بٹ)
Naveed Akbar Butt is a film producer from Lahore. Naveed Butt is the second husband of Sangeeta. In early 1990’s Sangeeta took a break from film direction. She returned into films direction with Khilona in 1998 which was produced by Naveed Butt. From 1998 onwards Naveed Butt also financed many other films of Sangeeta.

Raza Ali Rizvi is the son of Syed Tayyab Hussain Rizvi and Mehtab Bano. Raza Ali Rizvi also participated in the film making as film producer. Few of the films of PNR productions have his name as the producer. Raza Ali Rizvi migrated to USA in late 1980’s and still resides there with his family.

The marriage was not much successful and Jiah stayed with her mother. Born in 1988 Jiah later worked in few Bollywood films. She died in mysterious circumstances in 2013 in India.

Saqib Sheikh has passed away few weeks ago. Saqib Sheikh has worked across various mediums from radio, theater to radio and films in supporting roles. There is a long artists, who have never worked in a lead role and kept on playing supporting roles, yet they are admired for their contributions. In Pakistan we have many such remarkable artists like Qavi Khan, Mehmood Ali, Jamshed Ansari, Samina Ahmed, Zaheen Tahira, Badar Khalil, Subhani Bayounas, Akbar Subhani to name a few.

Ayesha Saqib
Ayesha Saqib is the only daughter of Saqib Sheikh. She worked as child artist in few plays of PTV. Like in Tappish in 1989, she was the younger sister of Jamal Shah. In Nijaat in 1993, she played the role of younger sister of Huma Nawab, who ends up being the victim of underage marriage. Ayesha Saqib also appeared in few episodes of drama series Pas-e-Aina in late 1990’s in teenage roles. However she never pursued acting as a full time profession.

Hameed Akhtar Hameed Akhtar was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, British India in 1924. A progressive leftist (communist), he migrated to Pakistan after he independence. He was a close friend of famous Urdu poet Saahir Ludhianwi, who also migrated to Pakistan. Back then in 1950’s and 1960’s it was quite hard time for anyone being communist. So Hameed Akhtar was also arrested and served jailed for 2 years in 1950’s due to his communist views. While Saahir Ludhianwi returned to India to escape the arrest, Hameed Akhtar lived in Pakistan despite facing hardships.
Apart from writing for papers, he also made two films Sukh Ka Sapna in 1962 was based on an Australian novel, Parayee Aag in 1971 was based on an Urdu novel by Hameed Jabeen. Produced by his spouse Saadia Hameed, both the films proved unsuccessful.
Due to his views he also faced restrictions and faced financial hardships. Till his death he was not able to make even a house of his own and lived at her elder daughter Saba’s residence in Lahore.

Saba Hameed Saba Hameed is the elder daughter of Hameed Akhtar and also the most famous one. A graduate of NCA Lahore, Saba started her acting career in late 1970’s from PTV Lahore center. She rose to fame in 1980’s with the character of Neeli in the drama Saahil. Since then Saba has worked in many television plays and serials. She also regularly worked on commercial theater at Alhamra, Lahore in 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Aqleem Akhtar (اقلیم اختر) is one of the forgotten characters in the history of Pakistan. She was a power broker and had access to the power corridors of Pakistani decision makers from 1960’s to early 1970’s. Especially from March 1969 to December 1971, she was considered one of the most powerful lady in Pakistan politics without serving at any key position.
Why Aqleem AKhtar is being discussed on this showbiz portal, the reason is few of her family members later excelled in the showbiz. This article discusses all the famous persons related to the family of Aqleem Akhtar. Two names in this article i.e. Tariq Mairaj and Naseem Tariq are no more related to this family, but their names are mentioned for reference only.

Aqleem Akhtar was from the city of Gujarat, Punjab. She was married to a Police officer and the couple has six kids. The marriage ended in divorce in early 1960’s due to disagreement between this couple. After the divorce, Aqleem Akhtar started a social club arranging dance parties from her apartment in the Rawalpindi with her nickname Raani. Her social club was regularly frequented by top government officials from military and bureacracry and thus she get acquaintance with officials serving on the key posts. During one such meeting around 1967 Aqleem Akhtar got introduced to General Yahya Khan, the then Commander Inchief of Paksitan Army. General Yahya Khan is famous as a drinker and womanizer and thus was a regular part of social gatherings in Rawalpindi.
Both Aqleem Akhtar (Raani) and General Yahya became good friends. It is said that Aqleem Akhtar Raani also introduced the General Yahya Khan to many other ladies than active in the social circles. Their friendship and association has been discussed widely in the Pakistani and International press. In 1960’s Pakistan was ruled by the military dictator General Ayub Khan who faced a violent agitation movement in 1968 and 1969 by the leftist student and labour organizations. As a result of this agitation, General Ayub Khan resigned in March 1969 and the Commander In-chief of Pakistan Army General Yahya Khan imposed the martial law in Pakistan. With the martial law of 1969, General Yahya Khan became the president of Pakistan as well and announced general elections in 1970.
Aqleem Akhtar Raani became the closest friend of General Yahya Khan suddenly gained importance. Due to her closeness with the General, she was being called as General Raani in the press, an identity which over shadowed her actual name Aqleem Akhtar. It was famous that Aqleem Akhtar Raani or General Raani can influence the decision of the President General Yahya Khan on politics and key political matters. With such reputation, Aqleem Akhtar Raani gained the status of a power broker. She was regular visited by politician, officials (civil or military), businessmen who want favor from the Yahya Khan regime. One such famous name is Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who later also served as the President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Being active in politics Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto also targetted the association of Aqleem Akhtar Raani and Yahya Khan in his electoral movement, and thus the name of General Raani gained popularity with the commoners as well. After the election of 1970, Sheikh Mujeebur Rehman from East Pakistan got the absolute majority in the parliament, however Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto the head of the second largest party from West Pakistan refused to attend the parliament due to reservation on the manifesto of Sheikh Mujeebur Rehman. Unable to resolve the differences, in March 1971, the president Yahya Khan cancelled the parliament session a decision which resulted in a violent uprising in East Pakistan. The uprsising ended in the war of December 1971 and East Pakistan eventually became an independant country of Bangladesh. Badly defeated General Yahya Khan left the presidency and handed over the powers to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.With General Yahya the role of Aqleem Akhtar Raani as a power borker in Pakistani politics also ended forever.

In 1970’s under the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto government, General Raani was widely targetted in the press especially in the Urdu Daily Musawaat, run by the ruling party i.e. Pakistan Peoples Party. She was accused of being part of the 1971 defeat with General Yahya. She was also put under house arrest for much of the Bhutto government until 1977 when Bhutto was overthrown by General Ziaul Haq. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto also setup a fact finding commission known as Hamudur Rehman commission on the 1971 war. The report of the Hamudur Rehman commission was not made public until 2001, which has widely discussed the association of General Yahya and Aqleem Akhtar Raani. The association of General Yahya and Aqleem Akhtar Raani can be considered as a dark part of our history.

In 1977 General Ziaul Haq came in to power by over throwing Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and it also ended the difficult time for Aqleem Akhtar Raani. She gradually disappeared from the print media. In 1981, General Yahya Khan also passed away. Aqleem Akhtar Raani again became a subject of the press due to her involvement in a drugs smuggling case in 1980’s. But like no other charges proven on her previously this case also ended eventually.
Since 1980’s till her death in 2002 Aqleem Akhtar Raani or General Raani spent a quiet life at her home town Gujrat. She is mentioned in memoirs of many military and civil officials who have worked with General Yahya Khan. Interestingly a Punjabi film loosely based on her character was also produced in Lahore in 1990’s named Madam Raani. Anjuman, the most successful artist of the Punjabi cinema played the role of Madam Raani (General Raani).

Though largely forgotten, every year in December when on the 16th December, on the anniversary of the 1971 war the name of General Raani does appear in press and media.
The legacy of General Raani is not ended with her death. Her next generation also got fame in different fields of life.

Aroosa Alam is the daughter of Aqleem Akhtar one of the six kids she had from her marriage with a police officer. Aroosa Alam married a civil officer. Aroosa also started her journalism career and is a prominent journalist working in English newspapers.

In mid 2000, Aroosa Alam became the subject of Indian media over her association to Captain Amrinder Singh a prominent sikh politican from the Indian state of Punjab who also served as the Chief Minister of Punjab. Aroosa has denied all such news and maintained the stance that she is only a good friend of Captain Amrinder Singh. As per journalist Hamid Mir, since 2004, Aroosa Alam mostly stays in India instead of Pakistan. Aroosa Alam’s son Fakhre Alam gained fame in the field of showbiz.

Fakhre Alam
Fakhre Alam is the son of Aroosa Alam and the grandson of Aqleem Akhtar. Fakhre Alam recieved his education from the United States and there he developed an interest in the rap music. In early 1990’s he released his urdu album consisting of rap music. The album became successful and his song rap bhangra became widely popular. Fakhre Alam also hosted various programs. He also ventured into acting and worked in the film Very Good Dunya Very Bad Log in 1998 opposite Resham. VGDVBL was an average hit and failed to establish the acting career of Fakhre Alam. By late 1990’s his singing career also ended, as the short lived rap style of singing also faded. He also worked in another film No Paisa No Problem in 2001 which proved unsuccessful at the Box office.

Fakhre Alam continued hosting of the various shows and was a regular entry in the shows hosted in the presidency during the Musharraf regime till 2008. In 2012 he was appointed the chairmen of Sindh Board for Film Certification (SBFC) and is still serving on this post. He occasionally also works as a sports host for the sports channel Ten Sports.
Fakhre Alam married twice. Her first marriage in 1998 or 1999 with a lady named Nadia ended within two years. His second marriage was with Hina Mairaj who is the daughter of the famous Pakistan Television director and producer Tariq Mairaj. Both Fakhre Alam and Hina Mairaj also separated ways. Now Fakhre Alam is married to an Arab lady and has three kids from this third marriage.

Naureen Sami Khan – Arshad Sami Khan
Naureen Sami Khan is the niece (sister’s daughter) of the Aqleem Akhtar. In relation Aqleem Akhtar is the khala of Naureen Sami Khan. Unlke her khala Aqleem Akhtar, it is said that Naureen Sami Khan is an Indian citizen with British nationality. Naureen Sami Khan was married to Arshad Sami Khan who served in Pakistani Air Force and also participated in the 1965 and 1971 wars with India as a fighter pilot. After leaving the air force Arshad Sami Khan also served at key positions in Pakistan foreign office as well as ADC to three Pakistani presidents. Arshad Sami Khan served as ambassador in fourteen different countries from 1970’s till his retirement in 1990’s. As per the journalist Hamid Mir he was diagnosed with cancer in 1989, and his expensive treatment was financed by Pakistani government on the public funds or tax payers money. Arshad Sami Khan and Naureen Sami Khan settled in India and passed away in 2009.

Adnan Sami Khan is the son of the Naureen Sami Khan and Arshad Sami Khan. In relation he is also a grandson of Aqleem Akhtar, where Aroosa Alam is his khala and Fakhre Alam is his second cousin.
Adnan Sami Khan is brought up in Europe where Arshad Sami Khan was serving as ambassador of Pakistan. Adnan Sami Khan has an interest in music and he returned to Pakistan in late 1980’s. In 1989 he started a music program Behta Darya on the state run Pakistan Television (PTV) from Islamabad center. It is common in Pakistan that persons of influential families waste tax payers money, in the name of showcasing their talent. Behta Darya was not much successful. Adnan released his first music album Raag Time in 1991 which recieved moderate success. He also secured a commercial contract with the Coca Cola. In 1992 during a television show he announced he is leaving Pakistan. However he was again in the news when famous film director Syed Noor signed him for his film Sargam. Adnan Sami Khan composed the music as well acted in this film with Zeba Bakhtyar in the opposite lead. Both Adnan and Zeba got married during the shooting of Sargam. Sargam was released in 1995, though praised by critics it was not commercially much successful. The success of the music of Sargam bring Adnan Sami Khan in the limelight. After Sargam, Adnan Sami Khan and Zeba Bakhyar signed another film Mausam to be produced by SB Hussain (Late). By then both Zeba and Adnan had a son Azaan Sami Khan.

Around 1997-98 Adnan Sami Khan composed the music of Mausam in London with Indian signer Asha Bhosle. In the meanwhile his marriage with Zeba Bakhtyar ended. Their breakup made headlines when Zeba filed a kidnap case against Adnan Sami Khan, who kidnapped his own son Azaan and fled to Canada. After the intervention of then Home Minister Ch. Shujaat Hussain, the case was resolved Azaan Sami Khan along with Adnan Sami Khan was brought back to Pakistan, where Azaan was handed over to his mother Zeba Bakhtyar.
Adnan released the music of film Mausam in 1998, though he did not own the rights of the music but the album was not much successful. The album has songs like Kabhi To Nazar Milao, Mujh Ko Bhi To Lift Kara De. In 2000 he moved to India and re-released the album of Mausam, with the name Kabhi To Nazar Milao and it proved a massive hit in the Indian market. We Pakistani have a strange habit, many times we do not acknowledge our own artists, but when the same artist gets recognition in India or west we suddenly remember how valuable the artist is for Pakistan. It happened in the case of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and similar to this Adnan Sami Khan also became very popular. The same album of Mausam which proved unsuccessful in 1998, became a superhit one in Pakistan once it is endorsed by the Indian audience as Kabhi To Nazar Milao.
Adnan Sami Khan prolonged his stay in India and composed music for few Bollywood films as well. He made the headlines again when he filed for Indian citizenship. His first request was rejected, and he filed the second request in 2015. The second request was accepted by the Indian government and on 1st January 2016 he was granted the Indian citizenship after surrendering his Pakistani passport.

Abid Ali was a legend and an asset for our country having vast experience of working in different mediums of acting theater, film and television. Abid Ali played many memorable roles and directed/produced worth remembering dramas in a career spawning over four decades. Like Abid, his talented family members are also active as artists.

Abid Ali is born and raised in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, though he got fame from dramas of PTV Lahore centre. Abid started his career from Radio Quetta in early 1970’s, which was the sole media opportunity in then small town of Quetta. Pakistan television Quetta center was inaugurated in 1974, but before that Abid had migrated to Lahore the cultural center of Pakistan. Abid’s first famous play was Jhok Sayal in 1973-74 from PTV Lahore centre. In Jhok Sayal Abid was paired with Humera Chaudhry. Humera Chaudhry was a new face at that time, who also provided vocals for few songs in films of that era.
After Jhok Sayal, Abid starred in numerous mega serials of PTV Lahore center like Waaris (1978-79), Hazaron Rastay (1985-86), Piyaas (1987), Suraj Kay Saath Saath (1987), Khawahish (1990) and many others. Abid Ali also worked in many films in supporting and side roles throughout 1980’s and 1990’s.
In 1989, television entered a new era when first private terrestrial channel NTM (Network Television Marketing) was launched thus ending monopoly of PTV over television transmission. NTM encouraged many independent producers to make dramas which introduced television audience to new subjects which otherwise were restricted on PTV. Abid Ali is a prominent name, who invested in infant private drama productions to strengthen its future. Abid produced many successful dramas like Dooriyan(1991), Dasht(1994), Doosra Aasman (1997),Pinjra (1999), Hawa Pe Raqs (2002) most of which were successful. Abid Ali experimented with new subjects and ideas in all these dramas. Dooriyan was based on a novel of Sidney Sheldon, Dasht was the story of a tribal environment in Balochistan, while Doosra Aasman was first Pakistani drama shot in UAE, which was based on Pakistani expatriates in UAE. Similarly Hawa Pe Raqs was story covering the circus workers. Abid also introduced many new faces through his productions like Atiqa Odho, Asad Malik in Dasht, Nida Mumtaz in Dooriyan, Iman Ali, Zeeshan Sikandar in Pinjra and Moammer Rana in Hawa Pe Raqs. Abid also starred in all these dramas in character roles performing memorable roles of his career.
In early 2000 a new era of private satellite channels started, which provided vast opportunities to television professionals. Abid Ali continued production but unlike 1990’s now he mostly produced commercial stuff mainly soap dramas. Abid Ali partnered another television artist named Syed Mukhtar for the production house Gold Bridge Media. Their production house produced many soaps and serials the most famous of which was Maasi Aur Malika on Geo TV.
Abid Ali married Humera Chaudhry in mid 1970’s after success of their drama Jhok Sayal. The couple has three daughters Maryam Ali, Iman Ali and Rehma Ali. In mid 2000’s Abid Ali married for the second time with another television artist Rabia Noreen. Since mid 2000’s Abid Ali lives in Karachi with Rabia Noreen, while Humera Abid Ali and his daughters live in Lahore.
Humera Chaudhry (Humera Abid Ali)
Humera Chaudhry started her career as a singer and also acted in few television plays around 1973-74. Humera’s younger sister Shama Chaudhry was also an artist. Paired with Abid Ali, Jhok Sayal in 1974 was the most successful play of Humera. After success of Jhok Sayal, many critics predicted a bright career for the Humera in both films and television. But the on-screen pair of Jhok Sayal decided to be one in real life too. Despite strong opposition from her father, Humera finally married Abid Ali. Humera quit acting and singing thus sacrificing her career for this marriage.
Despite few ups and downs mainly due to financial difficulties, both Humera and Abid have always kept their family life private by maintaining a distance from media. Humera made a comeback in singing, when she provided vocals for OST’s and songs of dramas produced by Abid Ali in 1990’s like Dasht and Doosra Aasman
Upon second marriage of Abid Ali in mid 2000’s, Humera expressed her disappointment in few press interviews. After the second marriage of Abid Ali, Humera resumed her acting career in dramas and performed many supporting roles. She played a memorable role in drama Asghari Akbari of Hum Tv as BatoolaN. Humera also played a minor role in film Bol, and is also working in upcoming film Kambakht.

Shama Chaudhry is younger sister of Humera Abid Ali and sister in law of Abid Ali. Shama started her acting career after mid 1970’s. Shama appeared in supporting roles in many dramas fom PTV Lahore centre till mid 1980’s. After marriage Shama Chaudhry also quit acting in 1980’s.

Maryam Ali is eldest daughter of Abid Ali and Humera Abid Ali. Maryam is an amateur artist, who worked in few serious theater plays in Lahore.
Iman Ali
Iman Ali has been a leading model who is also successful in acting. Iman Ali is known for doing selective work. Iman started her career from modeling. One of her earliest drama was Pinjra(1999) produced by her father Abid Ali. Her first major introduction was appearance in video of Abrarul Haq’s song Saannu tere naal pyar ho gaya opposite Meekal Zulfiqar. On television Iman appeared in several dramas, mostly in glamorous roles. Her famous dramas are Jaye Kahan Yeh Dil (Geo Tv), Qismat (Geo TV), Dil Day Ke Jayenge(Geo Tv). Iman’s debut film was critically acclaimed Khuda Ke Liye in 2007. Iman Ali starred with another debutant Fawwad Khan and also won the Lux Style Award in the subsequent year. After Khuda Ke Liye, Iman Ali decided to do selective work. Bol in 2011 was her next major venture.
Rehma Ali
The youngest daughter of Abid Ali and Humera Abid Ali, Rehma is also active in acting and singing. Rehma has worked in several dramas in different roles. Nail Polish was her debut drama on ATV. As a singer Rehma is also part of Coke Studio Season 7 which will be aired in coming days.
Rabia Noreen
Rabia Noreen started her acting career from PTV Karachi center’s drama Zeenat which was written by Fatima Surriya Bajiya. Despite success of Zeenat, Rabia took a break from acting after marriage. Her first marriage was not successful and thereafter she also worked as air-hostess. Rabia returned to acting from drama Babar in 1996 in which she played the role of second wife of Babur (played by Shabbir Jaan). Since her return Rabia mostly appears in negative roles. Rabia married Abid Ali in mid 2000’s. It was second marriage of both Abid Ali and Rabia Noreen and now both live in Karachi.

Before wrapping up, here is a song from past in the voice of Humera Abid Ali from drama Dasht shot in the rugged terrain of Gawaddar, Balochistan. It was the first ever drama shot in the remote area of Gawaddar in 1993, when it was a small fishermen town without basic infrastructure. Till this day it is the most successful drama made in the background of Balochistan, a province otherwise neglected by our media. Dasht is indeed an all time classic drama of Pakistan which introduced Attiqa Odho. It was also the first successful drama of Nauman Ejaz in lead role.

The lyrics were provided by legendary Punjabi poet Ustaad Daaman, a rare occasion as he always avoided writing lyrics for filmi songs. The song has been remixed by many artists afterwards like Tahira Syed, Shahida Mini but the original one was in the voice of Humera Chaudhry who in 1973 was a young voice starting her career as a singer and actor.

Abid Ali
Abid Ali was born and raised in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province but he got fame from dramas of PTV Lahore centre. Abid Ali started his career from Quetta Radio in early 1970’s, which was the sole media opportunity in then small town of Quetta. Pakistan television Quetta center was inaugurated in 1974, but before that Abid had migrated to Lahore which was considered the cultural center of Pakistan. Abid Ali’s first famous play was Jhok Sayal in 1973-74 from PTV Lahore centre. In Jhok Sayal Abid Ali was paired with Humaira Chaudhry. Humaira Chaudhry was a new face at that time, who also provided vocals for few songs in films of that era.
After Jhok Sayal, Abid starred in numerous mega serials of PTV Lahore center like Waaris (1978-79), Hazaron Rastay (1985-86), Piyaas (1987), Suraj Kay Saath Saath (1987), Khawahish (1990) and many others. Abid Ali also worked in many films in supporting and side roles throughout 1980’s and 1990’s.
In 1989, television entered a new era when first private terrestrial channel NTM (Network Television Marketing) was launched thus ending monopoly of PTV over television transmission. NTM encouraged many independent producers to make dramas which introduced television audience to new subjects which otherwise were restricted on PTV. Abid Ali is a prominent name, who invested in infant private drama productions to strengthen its future. Abid Ali produced many successful dramas like Dooriyan(1991), Dasht(1994), Doosra Aasman (1997),Pinjra (1999), Hawa Pe Raqs (2002) most of which were successful.
Abid Ali experimented with new subjects and ideas in all these dramas. Dooriyan was based on a novel of Sidney Sheldon, Dasht was the story of a tribal environment in Balochistan, while Doosra Aasman was first Pakistani drama shot in UAE, which was based on Pakistani expatriates in UAE. Similarly Hawa Pe Raqs was story covering the circus workers. Abid also introduced many new faces through his productions like Atiqa Odho, Asad Malik in Dasht, Nida Mumtaz in Dooriyan, Iman Ali, Zeeshan Sikandar in Pinjra and Moammer Rana in Hawa Pe Raqs. Abid also starred in all these dramas in character roles performing memorable roles of his career.
In early 2000 a new era of private satellite channels started, which provided vast opportunities to television professionals. Abid Ali continued production but unlike 1990’s now he mostly produced commercial stuff mainly soap dramas. Abid Ali partnered another television artist named Syed Mukhtar for the production house Gold Bridge Media. Their production house produced many soaps and serials the most famous of which was Maasi Aur Malika on Geo TV. Abid Ali led an active life right till the end, doing what he loved and even after his demise, his dramas continue to go on air.
Abid Ali’s First Wife
Abid Ali married Humaira Chaudhry in mid 1970’s after success of their drama Jhok Sayal. The couple has three daughters Maryam Ali, Iman Ali and Rehma Ali. Humaira Chaudhry started her career as a singer and also acted in few television plays around 1973-74. Humera’s younger sister Shama Chaudhry was also an artist. Paired with Abid Ali, Jhok Sayal in 1974 was the most successful play of Humaira. After success of Jhok Sayal, many critics predicted a bright career for the Humaira in both films and television. The hit on-screen pair of Jhok Sayal decided to get married. Despite strong opposition from her father, Humaira Ali finally married Abid Ali. Humaira quit acting and singing thus sacrificing her career for this marriage.
Despite few ups and downs mainly due to financial difficulties, both Humaira Ali and Abid Ali always tried their best to keep their family life private by maintaining a distance from media. Humaira made a comeback in singing, when she provided vocals for OST’s and songs of dramas produced by Abid Ali in 1990’s like Dasht and Doosra Aasman.
Humaira and Abid Ali got divorced after Abid Ali got married to Rabia Noreen.
Abid Ali’s Second Wife
Abid Ali got married to television actress Rabia Noreen in January 2006. Rabia Noreen and Abid Ali in one of the shows narrated how they met and why they decided to get married. This was also Rabia Noreen’s second marriage.
Rabia Noreen started her acting career from PTV Karachi center’s drama Zeenat which was written by Fatima Surriya Bajiya. Despite success of Zeenat, Rabia took a break from acting after marriage. Her first marriage was not successful and thereafter she also worked as air-hostess. Rabia returned to acting from drama Babar in 1996 in which she played the role of second wife of Babur (played by Shabbir Jaan). Since her return Rabia mostly appeared in negative roles.
When Abid Ali got married for the second time, Humaira Ali expressed her disappointment in few press interviews. After the second marriage of Abid Ali, his first wife Humaira Ali resumed her acting career in dramas and performed many supporting roles. She played a memorable role in drama Asghari Akbari as BatoolaN. Humaira Ali also played a minor role in film Bol, and later on was seen in many other popular dramas.
Abid Ali’s Daughters
Maryam Ali is the oldest daughter of Abid Ali and Humaira Ali. Maryam is an amateur artist, who worked in few serious theater plays in Lahore. Iman Ali is Abid Ali and Humaira’s middle child. She has been a leading model who is also successful in acting. Iman Ali is known for doing selective work.
Iman Ali started her career from modeling. One of her earliest drama was Pinjra(1999) produced by her father Abid Ali. Her first major introduction was appearance in video of Abrarul Haq’s song Saannu tere naal pyar ho gaya opposite Meekal Zulfiqar. On television Iman appeared in several dramas, mostly in glamorous roles.
Her famous dramas are Jaye Kahan Yeh Dil (Geo Tv), Qismat (Geo TV), Dil Day Ke Jayenge(Geo Tv). Iman’s debut film was critically acclaimed Khuda Ke Liye in 2007. Iman Ali starred with another debutant Fawwad Khan and also won the Lux Style Award in the subsequent year. After Khuda Ke Liye, Iman Ali decided to do selective work and since then has been seen in many notable projects.
The youngest daughter of Abid Ali and Humaira Ali, Rahma Ali is also active in acting and singing. Rehma has worked in several dramas in different roles. Nail Polish was her debut drama on ATV. As a singer Rahma has also been part of Coke Studio Season 7 and recently has sung OST for leading dramas.
Sultana Sidiqi is one of leading ladies of Pakistan. She has been the first female owner of any media house in our country. Being a PTV producer, she used all her experience to raise a new media house HUM TV, which revived Pakistani drama and gradually phased out the viewership of Indian Dramas. While other media houses were happy to go with the popular trend by airing Indian content or producing Indian styled dramas, it was HUM TV which took the initiative of sticking to our own style and revived the tradition of Pakistani drama. This faith and hard work paid back, and eventually other channels are now also following the same trend.

So you know how you introduce solids to a baby. Baby rice, the most favorable first food – almost always an instant hit. Add in apple, pear -all good. Repeat – all good. Then introduce a few new flavors -sweet potato, butternut squash and gag! Baby wants nothing to do with all this food business. I am that baby. I tuned into the first few episodes of Faltu Larki when it first went on air and few episodes down, I was pleasantly surprised. Interested. A drama with actual humor, scenarios and characters that felt so real. A different treatment yes, but I took it in stride and liked it. Until the haveli characters were introduced and I wrinkled my nose and backed off. Never tuned in again until a few days ago and then could not stop watching.
On air every Thursday at 8pm on A Plus, Faltu Larki has been written by Faseeh Bari Khan and directed by Mazhar Moin. Apparently a show that aired a few years ago, Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewa was also written by Faseeh Bari Khan and directed by Mazhar Moin and that is something which caught my attention only recently otherwise I may not have bothered with Faltu Larki either. For some reason I was never able to bring myself to watch Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewa and so I can not compare the two shows. Anyway, back to Faltu Larki – I am aware a review of the first couple of episodes was posted on this website and it was actually that review that made me curious enough to watch the drama in the first place. What the reviewer wrote (in not these very words but still) – and stayed with me is very true – the dialogues of this drama are so witty and different. That and the characters, well most of them at least, are so interesting, real, outrageous all rolled into one that you can not help be drawn into watching the drama.
The drama keeps your interest alive for there are quite a few tracks running parallel to each other and some intertwined with others. Probably best to start with Anwar Sb (Salman Shahid) who has two wives and families all living in the same house. He has three children with his first wife (played by Hina Dilpazir) – Bhaijaan (Tipu Shareef), Faiza (Sundus Tariq) and Erum (Anam Fayyaz). Yes, Bhaijaan is called just that – Bhaijaan – by all and sundry. His parents, sisters, relatives all call him that although some fifteen plus episodes later we are enlightened. His actual name is Arsalan. Anyway, Anwar Sb’s second wife, Paro (Samiya Mumtaz) is much younger than the first and has a daughter, Palwasha aka Paashi. Anwar Sb’s younger brother Siraj (Behroze Sabzwari) also lives in the same house with his wife and son Yasir (Farhan Malhi). Apparently the two brothers have a distant relative who lived in India and upon her death, Siraj travels to India and brings back the relative’s daughter Jahan Ara (Dania Anwar) and announces she is to now live with them. At the same time we are also introduced to Erum’s fiancé Tabish (Imran Ashraf) and his family, who are very religious, amongst other things.
Fast forward a few episodes and the next lot of characters are introduced. These all reside in the ‘haveli’ and honestly, each character outdoes the other in terms of boggling my mind. Quite literally. Be it the mum (Seemi Raheel), her son Moazzam Ja, her daughter –never-quite-grasped-her-name- Bi (Yasra Rizvi), the female -always- clad- in -male- clothes driver Anwar or Mishtiri the newly hired maid who is the link between the family in the haveli and Anwar Sb’s household. Ek say barh kar ek hain!
It does sound like a whole pot full of characters in one drama and yes, while it is that, each character has a story to tell, some still shrouded in mystery twenty two episodes down. It is what Paro says to Jahan Ara about how in real life people are not as they are portrayed in movies and dramas. Nobody is black or white. A person in reality may be sensible one day, unreasonable the next, love something with a passion for a while and begin to detest it later. And that is exactly what most of the characters in this drama are. Paro, seemingly outraged by having been passed over by Bhaijaan has made exacting revenge and ensuring he never gets married to be her mission in life. She stops at nothing, even resorting to black magic. But then her heart softens when she sees Jahan Ara ill – until she becomes a prospective bride for Bhaijaan at which she makes her hatred well known, haha! Siraj may come across as the mild natured uncle who brings home an orphaned niece but his half baked business plans and emotional blackmailing towards his wife to the extent of selling her jewellery somehow does not make him seem so innocent and gullible anymore. Anwar Sb’s first wife seems to have a thick skin (no pun intended) and calls it as it is, not indulging in pretense whether it be for her daughters’ in laws sake or family. Yet she has her moments of despair which she can not hide at times when she reflects at the sad state of her marriage. Taabish and his mother are hypocrites whose references to religion are brought up at their own convenience and twisted for their own benefit. Jahan Ara who has wept most episodes away yet manages to find her tongue when dealing with Paashi or putting Yasir down. I have a feeling she is not all that she portrays herself to be but am waiting to find out. And Paashi! For all the times, I have been frustrated and shook my head at ‘twists’ in dramas when the female lead is unable to reach out to the male lead and ‘inform’ him of the zabardasti ka rishta being enforced upon her – in this day and age of internet,telephones,whatsapp etc – Paashi wipes away all my frustration for she manages to use all those and then even resort to good old pen and paper to get her point across!
The dialogues are definitely the strongest selling point in this drama, followed by amazing acting. I have found myself chuckling over so many dialogues. The scenes between Paro and Yasir where she constantly puts him down for being a useless film ka hero, her references to ‘faasbook’ (facebook), the first wife’s ‘bilood mein pressure’, ‘taich na karna’ – it just made me laugh. I can not figure out whose acting I enjoy the most – Samiya Mumtaz, Tipu’s, Anam Fayaz, Hina Dipazir, Taabish’s mum in law or even the young actress who plays Paashi. I am not being critical for the sake of being critical and this may only be my own perception but somehow even though Taabish’ character seems realistic, the acting by Imran Ashraf seems off point sometimes for he sounds like he is acting out a part rather than being the part, if that makes any sense. If it does not then let it go for it is probably just me who feels like that.
Another aspect that appealed to me is the dark humour which is downright insulting at times but strangely refreshing from the point of view of television dramas. For this is very real. References to weight, ‘hont latka kar baat karna’ (Taabish to Erum), ‘bring me chai with sugar because I don’t have sugar ki bemari’. I know, they sound outrageous but it worked for me in the sense that I gasped out loud at the rudeness of it all – but was not put off. Then again, the comedy factor brought about by the haveli characters with Seemi Raheel’s constant references to not being touched by Anwar the driver because she seems like a male and Moazzam Ji’s bachao acts did not make me laugh. Taabish’s mother’s constant ‘aap jayen yahaan se’ to her husband while initially seemed pointless but after a while I began to wait and expect her to say that to him each time he passed. What is all that about I wonder?!
Which brings me to a lot of little things which made me think – what is all that about, I wonder?! Anwar and Moazzam Ji’s sister – the jealousy and possessiveness. I do not know what to make of that? Paro’s weirdness about Bhaijaan seems to be half explained later on in the episodes and is not a very well hidden secret with Bhaijaan’s mother also knowing the truth so then how did the marriage with his father come about? Only to ensure Bhaijaan does not marry anyone else? Jahan Ara seemed drawn to Yasir but seems to be more than content with her upcoming marriage to Bhaijaan. What is running through her mind?
I could go on but seems like I have done enough of that already. For those of you who have been watching this from the beginning, you would have tons more scenarios or dialogues to add and please feel free to do so. My only concern is that the previous play presented by the combination of Faseeh Bari Khan and Mazhar Moin dragged on for 150 episodes or so if I am not mistaken and I sure hope this does not have a similar treatment. For as I sat down to pen this review I happened to check A Plus facebook, rather ‘faasbook’ page and saw that this drama will now air twice a week. I do not know whether that is to wrap it up or what. Anyway, I enjoyed these episodes so much, bar a few silly scenes which can be skipped that I could not resist penning down my thoughts and hearing yours. And for those of you who have not been watching this drama so far – Faltu Larki is not everyone’s cup of tea but do give it a go. How do you all feel about Faltu Larki so far?
