The Controversial Announcements

Marriages end in bitter ways and when you are a public figure, things get really tricky as many people see your daily life and personality and your decisions are scrutinized brutally at times. Thus, getting into a new relationship also brings a new wave of public opinion and stars are not always able to handle things in a graceful manner. Screenwriters On Screen

PTV, never praised for its journalistic telecast, serving merely as a communique of government, has always been accredited for the mastery exhibited in the department of playmaking. To some, the success is a result of the opulence of the screenwriting talent available. With the likes of Anwar Maqsood, Fatima Surreys Bajjia, Ashfaq Ahmad, Bano Qudsiya, Munnu Bhai and Haseena Moin at its helm, the institute has seen glory of which, the newcomers can only dream of. But, we will not engage in this, nor is this piece meant to reminisce the old days.
With a plethora of private drama channels running plays 24 hours a day, the quality was sure to be compromised. However, one thing which dwindled quicker than the standard of the plays is the popularity of the screenwriter. One may blame it upon the caliber of the playwrights but after all we still see masterpieces, no matter how sporadic those may be. Not every play aired is Anghan Terha or Ashyana, but we do get to watch the likes of Pyar e Afzal or Sang e Mar Mar in a year or half. Then why is it that screenwriters, which once used to be household names, now struggle to get half a ton followers on twitter?

Hosting:

PTV being the only channel at one time had the responsibility of airing variety of programs; programs that entertained, programs that would educate. So along, with dramas, tutorials and religious shows, talk shows provided a likeable option to the producers. Being a state run channel, discussing politics, and that too without controversy, would have been a tough job (thankfully). As a result, culture, arts and philosophy formed the preferred pool of topics for discussion, and who else could do these better than writers. ‘Zaavia’, a very famous show, which focused on social issues, was hosted by the legendary playwright Ashfaq Ahmad. Ashfaq Ahmad, who had already gained popularity in the masses with his radio show ‘Talqeen Shah’, augmented his status as an intellectual through it and is still considered a popular reference of wisdom in populace.

Anwar Maqsood, another eminent screenwriter and probably the most prolific as well, hosted a number of shows. Along with Moin Akhtar, the duo gave some of the most unforgettable satire performances of the television history. His sharp wit made him a popular choice for hosting shows of ceremonious nature.

Screenwriters On Screen

But today, the nature of TV shows has undergone a drastic change. With political talk shows achieving the status of rating magnets, the caliber of the host is measured in decibels and the one who can yell the loudest, gets the job.

Involvement:

It is said, while writing plays, Fatima Surriya Bajjiya would move to PTV headquarters with her belongings. She would write, eat, sleep, and sometimes knit sweaters there. While doing so, she also served as a consultant. Anybody facing a problem regarding content or linguistics would consult her. Such level of involvement was a major factor in consolidating the position of writers as authority figures.

In contrast to that, a good number of dramas made today are adaptations of novels. The job of the novelist mostly ends with the consent to allow dramatization and any further involvement seems unnecessary. Trims and cuts are handled by the content team which can do the job more effectively and at a better pace. The writer might not even get to visit the set. Compare this to the scenario of Adnan Siddiqui and Mishi Khan getting pronunciation classes from Surriya Bajjiya before a play.
Ceremonies:

With a total of 7 dramas being aired in a week, one would often come across a function to celebrate a serial’s ending where the cast and the production team would share their experience of the dramatization process. Such ceremonies were aired sometimes before the start of the play as well. It was there when the viewers were most likely to know about the writer. With a deluge of dramas released in a calendar year by every major production house, it has become nearly impossible to host such grandiose events for every drama and the tradition has been replaced with private success parties. Thus, the very prudent looking writer explaining his inspiration on screen is replaced by an ill trimmed shoddy guy sitting in a distant corner at a private party lamenting about the trouble he faced after the guard at the entrance refused to recognize him.

There might be other factors including following earned through journalism (Munnu Bhai, Ata ul Haq Qasmi) which might have given the wordsmiths their well deserved recognition. However, while it is without doubt that the veterans enjoyed limelight unlike contemporary writers; those of today seem to get better take-homes for their toils.

Screening of old Indian films

Seeing the overwhelming and record breaking success of Indian films in Pakistani cinemas, now Indian film distributors are also planning to release three old Indian films.

The first film in this list is Sholay which was released in India in 1975. The second film is Dilwale Dulhania Lay Jayenge released in 1995 and then Devdaas released in 2002. The first film Sholay is expected to be released on 20th March 2015.

Talking to Voice of America Urdu, head of Mandwiwala Entertainment and film distributor Nadeem Mandwiwala told that ‘Public in Pakistan always wanted to watch these films in cinema’. As per Nadeem Mandwiwala, the screening of old films is limited to these three films for the time being.

Beyond any doubt Indian films have massive following in Pakistan, a fact fully supported by back to back success of Indian films in cinemas. It will be interesting to see how the Bollywood crazy cine goers react to screening of old Bollywood flicks. Indeed screening of Indian films is emerging as a lucrative business, so based upon the outcome of these films, other distributors might also export other old Indian films.

Screening of new indian films banned till final court verdict

The release of Indian films is challenged in Lahore court since last year. First famous TV anchor Mubashar Lucman  filed a petition in Lahore high court to give a verdict on screening of smuggled Indian films n Pakistan, in November 2013. Mubashar Lucman was also supported by group of lollywood director/producers headed by Syed Noor and Aslam Daar. The issue was in court, when Mubashar Lucman and Syed Noor reached an out of court settlement with the distributors of Indian films in Pakistan.

In December 2013, Mubashar Lucman withdrawn its petition citing that the issue is settled where Indian film distributors have agreed to give priority prime time slot in cinemas to a Pakistani films if there is any direct conflict with an Indian film. The distributors also agreed to make a welfare fund, where they donate 1 percent of revenue earned from screening of Indian films. The proposed welfare fund will be used for betterment of Pakistani films. Syed Noor also supported Mubashar Lucman in this regard. However the other group of lollywood producer headed by Aslam Daar refused to accept any agreement and filed another petition in Lahore High court in January 2014. The matter is subdued in court, but court has not issued any clear order on the status of screening indian films.

However the federal government has issued a ban on screening of new indian films till a final verdict is issued by court. The order was issued in the last week of January 2014. Due to this many distributors who have already invested millions in purchasing the rights of Indian films and cinema owners are citing financial difficulties and tough times in near future.

The last Indian film released in Pakistani cinemas was ‘Jai Ho’ on 24th January 2014. Since then no new film is released, the film planned to release in this course were ‘Hassi To Phansi’ on 7th February 2014 and ‘Ghunday’ on 14th February 2014.

Science is disappearing from Pakistan , Noam Chomsky

Speaking at the sixth Yohsin Lecture organized by Habib University of Pakistan, Noam Chomsky said that there used to be Nobel Laureates and people related to modern science in Pakistan but now science in Pakistan has practically disappeared from the education system.

Chomsky says Pakistan lacks serious scientists to secure the education system. If Pakistan is living in a world of religious superstitions, it has no future.

The American linguist and philosopher added that the world is currently facing four crises: nuclear war and the threat of environmental catastrophe, the deterioration of democracy around the world and the Corona virus pandemic. In this Era, only people and nations equipped with scientific knowledge may have a future.

According to Noam Chomsky, the Trump administration has made every effort to control weapons, which has resulted in saftey from nuclear war threat . He said that no nation can bear war . Especially , if India and Pakistan will fight the war then it will be final and decisive.

Mohsin posted a picture of him and Schumaila Hussain (the singer of Khamooshi OST) in which they seemed to be working on something. The caption on the picture says that they are working on the music of the upcoming feature film“Senti Aur Mental”. As it was mentioned earlier by Yasra Rizvi that“Senti Aur Mental” is a Punjabi Wedding film and includes 9 songs. We’re really looking forward to listening to these songs because Mohsin Abbas Haider’s vocals – be it for film songs or his performances in Mazaaq Raat – are always entrancing, so it’s not surprising that fans are excited for his upcoming musical endeavor with Schumaila Hussain.

Scenes From Pakistani Dramas That Are Too Similar

0

There are some scenes in Pakistani dramas that are repeated. These scenes and scenarios are usually used to take the story forward in a different direction. The similarities between these scenes are laughable at times because it shows the lack of creativity on the part of these drama makers. Some of these scenes also show a lack of sensitivity in some cases. These scenes can also easily be termed as convenient screenplay since these are tried and tested formulas that bring a major change in the plotline. In the recent dramas, we have been seeing certain trends. These similar scenes also represent such trends in dramas.

Here are some scenes from Pakistani dramas that are too similar.

Smart Phones to Create Misunderstandings

The makers of smartphones probably never thought of the ways these writers were going to misuse the technology. In every other drama, the negative character is shown making a video of the heroine to get her into trouble. Most often this video is used to create a misunderstanding and as proof of the infidelity of the wife who is actually doing nothing wrong. Such false accusations have recently caused the biggest and most bitter misunderstandings between the main leads. The formula is simple, it requires a smartphone, a negative character whose sole purpose in life is to get the person being recorded into trouble, and of course a man who does not trust his wife enough! Interestingly enough, this technology has not been used as often in dramas for good purposes, like catching the actual culprits!

Sabaat

Since Sabaat has every clichéd scenario in the book, it is no surprise that a scene from this drama is on this list. Atif managed to get ‘evidence’ of Anaya’s unfaithfulness while her boss helped her down the stairs since he was unwell. He recorded everything, showed it to her husband who was waiting for a reason to lash out at Anaya and that is how they were separated right till the second last episode of the drama. Misunderstandings now are backed by video recording in Pakistani dramas so that there is even more reason for these useless husbands to doubt their wives.

Tera Ghum Aur Hum

Tera Ghum Aur Hum is another drama that unfortunately has gone downhill. The writer is using every trick in the book to entice the viewers therefore this trick was also used to create a scenario similar to the others mentioned in the article. Sara records Mahi and her cousin in a situation that wouldn’t have been acceptable for Mahi’s husband Ali who also happens to be Sara’s cousin! This is another similar scene in which a negative character records the innocent wife doing something which will create a rift between the husband and wife.

Nand

In drama serial Nand, Goher recorded Farwa and Shahzaib in a situation that would lead to her husband eventually doubting her. Initially, her husband does not believe Goher but chooses to believe his wife. Gradually, however, this recording plays a major role in creating the misunderstandings between the couple and the effect of the recording was the same as all the other.

Negative Characters Going Insane

Pakistani dramas rely heavily on the negativity of the characters to ‘entertain’ the viewers. After showing this negativity from the beginning to the end, the most convenient way for the writers to end the story is to show that such characters lose their senses in the end. Instead of showing gradual and growth and changes, such endings are used as a quick punishment. The viewers find such endings frustrating to watch and the scenes showing such endings are all the same.

Titli

It can be safely stated that Titli was the first drama that started this trend. Naila was shown suffering in the last few episodes which led to this ending. The situation was shown repeatedly in other dramas also particularly with female characters who were either, greedy, materialistic, or shallow. This is the last scene of this final episode. Since this was the first time the viewers saw such an ending, they liked it. But now the trend has become too common!

https://youtu.be/uHDhLTbIovA?t=2045

Jhooti

Jhooti’s main lead Nirma stayed negative right till the end until everyone disowned her and she had no place to go. The man responsible for bringing her to this point once again faced no redemption but Nirma paid the price when she lost her senses. By giving such endings to these characters, the writers seem to force people to feel for them, which is not the best way to end such stories. There weren’t even any last conversations in most such scenes so this was the most convenient way to end the drama.

Balaa

Balaa was yet another drama serial in which the last scene was too similar to the scenes in other such dramas. After showing how insensitive and evil Nigar could get starting from the first episode right till the last one, the writer ended her track the same way many others did! Do you see how similar this scene is to all the others? These scenes sent out the wrong message about all those people who are actually in mental asylum fighting serious mental disorders.

Divorces Out of Rage

Unfortunately, Pakistani writers often sensationalize a sensitive issue such as divorce. Very often in dramas, we get to watch scenes in which men divorce their wives suddenly. Although these situations are different, sometimes the reasons are different too but the scenes are almost always the same. The background score and the overall atmosphere sensationalizes these scenes. All these divorce scenes have a lot in common especially since the way they have been shot is the same.

Meherposh

Meherposh definitely crossed all the limits of decency when it showed a man divorcing his wife on the night of their wedding. This scene involved mistrust, anger, and manhandling of the woman just like all such scenes.

Jalan

Jalan’s divorce scene was sensationalized to the extreme too. Asfandyar divorces his wife and he also pushes her around just like the husband in Mehrposh. This was one of the most unpleasant divorces we have seen in Pakistani drama, although the competition is tough, unfortunately!

Nand

Nand is another drama which showed a similar scene and it won’t be wrong to say that as far as such scenes go, this one was also the most overdramatic one. The background score, the reactions, and the overall feel of this scene are not different from all the others.

Can you think of any other scenes in Pakistani dramas that were a little too similar? Share your views.

SC allows Bol News to air Aamir Liaquat show ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’ conditionally

0

The Supreme Court on Monday permitted Amir Liaquat to host Bol News TV show ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’ on the condition that the content which will be aired shouldn’t have any hate speech.

PEMRA had issued a notification calling for a ban on Amir Liaquat and his show on Jan 27 after it surfaced on the social media that he has put allegations of blasphemy during his show on civil society activists and bloggers who had disappeared

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, said a complete video of the episode and the content contained therein must be submitted to the office of the additional registrar (judicial). It warned that serious action would be taken in case any violations of the court order. All high court orders regarding the issue are now suspended.

The court issued the decision after a hearing on Pemra’s appeal against the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judgement last week which suspended the Pemra ban on the show.

Saza Hai – Episode 19

Yes, I took the liberty of changing the title of the drama because I think this drama should have been titled just that!! I am finding it really hard to absorb what I just watched!! Just when you think Sangat has shocked and disappointed you enough, it gets worse. Now when I hear the sound track during the break “saza hai, maye saza hai” I get even more convinced that it refers to Shahwez, the bechara rapist who is getting punished by a “ruthless” rape victim! Talk about taking contradictions to a whole new level! A rapist has been turned into a victim and a victim has been shown as someone who is perfectly comfortable around the person who violated her in the worst way possible! Ayesha’s confidence is definitely not something you can relate to. It is almost as if she wants Shahwez to get attached to his daughter, which is sickening. She is still not willing to tell her mother the truth because she wants Shahwez to stay in the house and she has no intentions of making any more attempts to be reconcile things with her husband. Whatever Ayesha’s grand plan is it should be revealed soon because I am losing all respect for her character which started off as a very strong and sensible one! Sure, Shahwez is the only person who can save Sangat’s life but is developing this whole relationship with him really important? Why doesn’t Ayesha just “order” him to do whatever it is that needs to be done?

The joke of the day was when Salma took pride in the fact that she was “strong” (stupid, naive, senseless????) enough to love someone like Shahwez! There was a time when I used to think Salma had no reason to feel “insecure” from Ayesha but now I am not even sure what Ayesha’s intentions are. She wants Shahwez to be her kid’s nanny and her driver. She is enjoying controlling him which basically means that she has clearly moved on. He is supposed to do everything which Adnan used to do. Why not just marry Shahwez and live happily ever after? Since torturing him is so much fun, Ayesha could do it for the rest of her life if she gets married to him and Shahwez’s “saza” will be never ending then!! I am sorry I have to joke about this otherwise very serious situation but I have stopped taking this drama seriously now.

Every week we see a senseless episode of this play which makes a mockery of something as serious as rape. What makes this drama even more unbearable now is that there are hardly any commercial breaks also to provide the much-needed relief from the torture of watch Ayesha and Shahwez sharing the most strange relationship we have ever witnessed in television history! The preview of the episode will ensure trps since Ayesha will tell Shahwez that he is the father of her child. It is shocking how much Ayesha trusts this man! She is going to share something she has not shared with her mother or her husband with this man because they have this “bond” which only the writer of this drama understands! After watching this episode and the last one I do feel like the writer is somehow trying to convince us that these two do share a bond which Ayesha does not share with anyone else. He is the only man she shares her feelings with and the first person she will tell the truth to! How are the viewers supposed to relate to this situation?

Did you watch this disastrous episode of Sangat? Please share your thoughts about it.

Sayonee Receives A Severe Backlash On Social Media

Sayonee Receives A Severe Backlash On Social Media

Coke Studio episode 2 released yesterday, and to the dismay of all it also revamped Sayonee. The song which was initially sung by Ali Azmat was re-sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Ali Noor. The song that carried Junoon legacy was featured as Salman Ahmed’s musical direction. The hopes were high around the country, however the song fared miserable among the masses.

Not a single Coke Studio went by thrashing the singers and Salman Ahmed, claiming that they have completely destroyed the song. Here are some Twitter comments that have been making rounds regarding Sayonee:

Arijit’s version of Sayonee has created a lot of buzz on internet.

Sayonee By Arijit Singh - Reaction From Pakistan

Arijit Singh recreated the iconic song Sayonee that was originally sung by Ali Azmat and the song was released yesterday. Here we have the YouTube video link of Arijit’s version of Sayonee:

Sayonee was released by Junoon in 1997. It was an instant hit and is remembered till know. People still node their heads on the tune of Sayonee. Here we have the video link of original Sayonne (for those forlorns who haven’t seen the iconic original video) see it yourself an compare the real and reel versions of Sayonee.

Salman Ahmed who was the lead guitarist of Junoon Band recreated Sayonee in coke studio couple of years back. The song was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Noori. Coke Studio version of Sayonee came out to be sheer disappointment. Internet started flooding with memes and made everyone realize that not every song is meant to be recreated.

Pakistan is bubbling with anger and people are mocking Arijit Singh badly, for successfully destroying our iconic song. Some people on the other hand raised a genuine question that how came Ali Azmat gave India the permission to remake his song.

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin Episode 4 – Unimpressive!

This episode opened with Haider submitting to the decision of the jirga because he could not see his Taya suffer the consequences of his actions. The conversation between Bibi jaan and her daughter and the ones between Tahira and her mother had absolutely no impact for two reasons. Bibi Jaan’s character is very confusing; I am still not sure which side of her is real!! I am all for grey characters but she goes from loving Shehla to treating her like she is a nobody in no time. After everything she said to Shehla in the previous episode, it was impossible to relate to her feelings for her “daughter”! She was shown saying to Shah Sb that she didn’t want to raise Shehla but had to because he forced her to and now tonight she told Shehla she lost a baby and when Shah Sb brought Shehla she felt like she got her baby girl back! Bibi Jaan’s character isn’t making a lot of sense right now. The actress playing Tahira does not know how to act, I am surprised that she is getting so much work! There is absolutely no variation in her acting, her dialogue delivery is flat and her expressions confusing. Same is true for the actress playing her mother.

The visit to the Mazar and all of Shehla’s conversation with the maid seemed like filler scenes – I am still wondering why they got so much screen time. All of Shehla’s efforts, her emotions and even her conversation with Haider fell flat because of Naveen Waqar’s terrible portrayal and dialogues which were not very touching. She looked good playing the bubbly Shehla but she isn’t very impressive playing the emotional fool who has no control over herself. Shah Sb’s concern for his children and his helplessness was the only part of this episode which I could relate to, rest of it did not work for me at all.

sd

Mansoor and his father just like Bibi Jaan are showing their true colors now. Mansoor’s father does not respect his wife or women in general which is why Mansoor is the same. I am wondering now how could Shah Sb not know this about him since they are bachpan ke dost! Once again a character which was shown as a positive one has been turned into a villain all of a sudden. Mansoor is greedy and he does not respect women therefore Shehla is going to face a very tough time once she gets married to him. Emaad Irfani’s acting too was unimpressive in this episode and Irfan Khoosat is a complete misfit for playing this role. Mansoor found out in tonight’s episode that Shehla was not Shah Sb’s real daughter but that doesn’t change much because he is not marrying her, he is marrying the money and status which he will get automatically once he marries her.

So far, this drama is getting worse with every passing episode already! None of the characters or actors are standing out in any of the roles. There is zero chemistry between the actors and even the most emotional scenes fail to have an impact. The preview of the next episode promised some drama – Shehla will do something extreme after Haider tells her once again that they don’t have a future together. So far the only episode of this drama which was better out of all the 4 which have gone air was the 1st one. The previous episode was full of loop holes and this one was unimpressive to say the least.

P.S. The review of Tum Kon Piya will be posted tomorrow.

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin Episode 3 – Tough Choices Ahead

I started watching this drama with very few expectations and the primary reason for tuning into SDBN was Ahsan Khan since he has truly impressed me with his acting in drama serial Udaari. I must say though that even with these expectations tonight’s episode was a complete let down especially in terms of acting. Tonight’s episodes was filled with emotional scenes yet they failed to leave an impact because those actors who seemed fine in a normal setting could not live up to the demands of these scenes. Even with a very gifted director leading this team, tonight’s episode was filled with mediocre performances and instances which weren’t easy to connect to.

Shehla decided to go to Tahira’s house to talk to her – a development which had innumerable coincidences to its credit. The guards in both the houses failed to do their duty. Shehla managed to slip out of her house and slipped into Tahira’s house without being spotted. After that everything that Shehla did was a desperate act to ensure that this marriage should not take place and it was only because of her visit to Tahira’s house that this issue was brought before the jirga. The girl who was introduced to us in the first two episodes was very different from the girl who was shown tonight. Shehla was always very conscious about what was expected from her but after learning that she was adopted and she could never marry Haider she did something which was completely against her nature – I get that – but Shehla’s attitude when she went to meet Tahira was strange. Shehla was extremely confident and very sure that this was the right move. (elcpinellas.org) The jirga scene later on went to show that this was actually a very serious matter. If Shehla was really raised by these parents in that house then she should have been well acquainted with the consequences of her actions therefore it makes you wonder why she didn’t just pick up the phone to talk to Tahira!! This development in the story which was the determining factor in this track was covered unconvincingly. The actress playing Tahira was expressionless throughout and her monotone dialogue delivery made it impossible for me to feel anything for her. Naveen Waqar’s acting was ‘confusing’!

sdbn

The opposite personalities of Shah Sahab and his wife were highlighted once again tonight. Bibi Jaan always appeared to be the more practical one but in this episode the constant remarks about Shehla’s background made it look like she had something against Shehla and she did not love her like her own daughter. Her conversation with Shah Sahab also hinted that she did not want to bring Shehla home but was talked into doing so by Shah Sahab. Shehla’s father’s reaction on the other hand was too cool. He was worried and he understood why Shehla would do something like this but even then he didn’t look shocked enough when the maid announced that Shehla was missing. Shah Sahab’s character is easy to understand but his initial reaction was impossible to relate to.

There was only one scene of Mansoor in tonight’s episode and that scene lacked creativity too. Last time around too Mansoor’s mother was seen warning the maid about his habits when she was using his perfume and this time around too Mansoor walked in when she was doing just that. Apparently Mansoor is ziddi ghussay wala – no surprises there! Bibi Jaan thinks if Shehla gets married she will move on and her husband-to-be’s mother thinks that once he gets married, he will learn to share and won’t get upset so easily. This particular episode went completely against the rule of ‘show, don’t tell’. Mansoor’s ‘bad habits’ (personality flaws?) are being highlighted in the wrong way, if his actions alone were used to send the message across it would have been far better than using both actions and telling the viewers what these flaws were.

sdbn

The shadi ki tiyaria at Tahira’s house were completely out of place because until now no one even told Haider about the engagement but apparently Tahira not only knows but the shadi is expected sometime soon! Wasn’t Haider planning to go abroad for studying and Shah Sahab said he didn’t think this was the appropriate time to talk to him about the engagement? He only found out about the engagement because of the recent developments in Shah Sahab’s house. Tahira also remembered the times when she visited them which went to show that these people were in touch all these years howcome they are blaming Haider now because they should know that he didn’t know about the engagement – yes I am very confused!!

The last scene of this episode was the only powerful scene in this episode; it portrayed perfectly what kind of a situation Haider was facing, it left him with very little choice. It was good to see the leads pleading their cases and not giving up. It was also refreshing watching a father like Shah Sahab taking a stand for something which would normally be against his principles because he loves both Haider and Shehla but the scene at the mazar in the preview of the next episode had done-to-death written all over it. This is mostly because of bad timing because very recently we saw Mohid and Anmol’s visit to the mazar.

Ahsan Khan was the only actor in this episode who performed brilliantly other than that, the acting by all the other actors was Over The Top, below average or confusing! The developments in Haider and Tahira’s track in particular were very confusing – in fact they made very little sense!

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin Episode 2 – Secrets Revealed, Hopes Smashed

The preview of this episode which was shown repeatedly on HUM all week pretty much summed up what was going to happen in this episode and some of the promos also revealed rest of the story therefore I must confess that I wasn’t very excited about watching this episode. However, the little surprises which this episode had in store for the viewers turned out to be the reason why this episode was overall an interesting one. The secret that was revealed in this episode was the centre of attention right from the beginning. Although so far the story doesn’t seem brand new but there are some aspects of this drama which should be appreciated.

The subtle way in which different scenes have been directed has to be the best part of this drama so far. Haider and Shah Sahab’s conversation (which could have turned into a confrontation) was the highlight of this episode because it was not over-dramatic but it had an impact. Also, Shehla shared her feelings with her father when he talked to her about the proposal instead of giving in instantly. I mentioned this in the review of the previous episode and I feel the need to say it again; I appreciate the fact that everyone in this family can communicate with each other without shouting or going overboard. Showing these characters think about what was happening around them also helped understand what was going on in their minds. Shah Sahab loves Shehla like his own daughter but she is not a Syed Zadi therefore he cannot ‘betray’ his dead brother by marrying Haider with someone who is out of cast. This is the main reason why this marriage can never take place. The fact that this is not an easy decision to make even for someone like Shah Sahab was highlighted repeatedly. The scene in which he goes to reassure Shehla after she finds out she is adopted was very touching. Bibi Jaan and Shah Sahab both put what they should do before what they would rather do. Bibi Jaan’s approach is more matter of fact than Shah Sahab’s. This is definitely one drama in which emotions take a back seat!

sdbn

Mansoor (Emaad Irfani) was most surely interested in this marriage only because of the political and financial support he will get in return which goes to show that he puts his career before anything else. It isn’t only Shehla who is going to be forced into getting married to Mansoor but he too isn’t taking this new relationship very seriously. The actress playing Tahira failed to impress in her brief appearance.

Naveen Waqar was fantastic as the vibrant girl who was very sure that this marriage will eventually take place in the first episode. In this episode however there were times when it seemed like she was trying too hard. Overall, her acting was convincing enough but in some scenes it definitely wasn’t up to the mark. Ahsan Khan’s acting was brilliant throughout this episode as well. Jamal Shah is a natural actor who was a good choice for playing this role. The ‘happy days’ are clearly over because this episode was filled with reality checks which will change the way Haider and Shehla look at things forever. The happy family which was introduced in the first episode has a lot of secrets which once revealed were not taken well by the members involved for obvious reasons.

This episode was directed brilliantly and the script so far is on point although it doesn’t offer anything new. The preview of the next episode suggested that the conversation Shehla had with her father did not have the effect it should have had and quite naturally she feels like she does not belong in that house therefore she goes somewhere.

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin – Episode 1

Writer: Qaisra Hayat

Producer: Momina Duraid

Director: Shehzad Kashmiri

Every Wednesday at 8pm on HUM TV

The first episode of Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahin (SDBN) had Shehzad Kashmiri written all over it! It was visually pleasing and this is not the first time that Shehzad Kashmiri has directed a drama which revolves around two people who have been brought up under the same roof by the same people end up getting involved with each other. This drama is based on a novel written by Qaisra Hayat. One thing that stood out more than any other in this first episode was watching Ahsan Khan not play Imtiaz’s character;) We all love to hate him as Imtiaz but it was definitely refreshing watching him play Haider’s character. Although Ahsan Khan has a long history of playing such roles but even then watching him play the role of Imtiaz definitely has made more of an impact than any other character he has played so far. It was also refreshing to watch some new faces in this first episode. Shamayal Tareen plays the character of Tabbasum and Sonia Khan also made a reappearance after a very long time as Bibi Jan. Both the actresses look alike therefore they were the perfect choice for these roles. Although the acting by both these actresses was somewhat unconventional but their accents and the way they acted gave a different feel to the drama. When I saw Ahsan Khan and Naveen Waqar’s photo shoot for the drama, I wasn’t sure if they will look good together but I am glad I was proven wrong because they looked great in this first episode.

sdbn

The first episode of SDBN was a “happy one” like all first episodes of serials which get very serious with every passing week. SDBN is the story of Shah Sahab’s (Jamal Shah) household. Shah Sahab is a disciplined and fair man who has tons of respect for his daughters and loves Haider who is the son of his dead brother. Shah Sahab raised Haider after his parents died and all the scenes tonight clearly suggested that he raised him like his own son. Shehla and Haider love each other and till the end of the episode were very sure that they could spend the rest of their lives with each other. When Tabbasum figures out what is going on between Shehla and Haider she asks Bibi Jaan to talk to Shehla and that is when she finds out that Haider’s father wanted him to marry some other girl. Till now this engagement was kept a secret because Shah Sahab wanted Haider to concentrate on his studies. Irfan Khoosat plays the role of Shah Sahab’s best friend who will (most probably) eventually be the one who will ask for Shehla’s hand in marriage for his son (Emaad Irfani).

All the characters were introduced in a decent manner in this episode without making any situation too dramatic. I liked how everyone in the house believes in talking to one another politely without being too concerned about whether they will get their point across or not. This was a very fast paced episode with some beautiful scenes. Shah Sahab asking his daughter to take his seat was one such scene which said a great deal about his personality. When Shehla was looking for the moon, the conversation between her and Haider went to show how sure she was that they will get married. This scene was also shot really well. I also liked the scene in which Bibi Jan did not overreact when Haider, Shehla and the kids came back from the outing but sat down and talked to Shehla.

sdbn

The preview of the second episode suggested that things will start getting serious from the next episode. Emaad Irfani’s character will make its entry in the next episode and Shah Sahab will ask his daughter to do something for him – which would most certainly involve ending her relationship with Haider. Ahsan Khan and Naveen Waqar’s chemistry, a few new faces, the fast pace and Shehzad Kashmiri’s direction made this episode entertaining. I hate to say this but it does look like things will get too serious too soon and this is going to be another love story which is destined to be halted due to a promise and samaj ki dewar. The drama has a strong cast and a skillful director therefore I will be tuning in next week without getting my hopes too high because it seems like the story might not have a lot to offer – too early to say for sure but that is what I guessed from this first episode.

How many of you watched the first episode of SDBN? Do share your thoughts about it.

Those of you who have read the novel please refrain from narrating the entire story in the comments section. Thank you!

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahe – Upcoming Drama On HUM TV

0

Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahe is an upcoming drama on Hum TV. It is directed by the brilliant Shehzad Kashmiri who has given us some hit plays in the past, including Dil-e-Muztar and Alvida. The drama is based on a novel by Qaisara Hayat. The cast includes Naveen Waqar, Ahsan Khan and Emmad Irfani.

This is the first time Naveen Waqar will be seen on Hum TV after her last drama Mol where she starred alongside Faisal Qureshi. Ahsan Khan has played quite challenging roles in Preet Na Kariyo Koi and Udaari, but the promos of this drama suggest that he is playing a chocolate hero in Saya-e-Dewar Bhi Nahe.

Sawera Nadeem Talks About Slap Scene

Mere Paas Tum Ho has taken the internet by the storm. It has kept the audience hooked with their TV screens. As soon as new episode releases, the internet goes crazy.

Sawera Nadeem Talks About Slap Scene

In episode 17, the most awaited character of Shehwar Ahmed’s wife made her grand entrance. Sawera Nadeem as Maham slapped Ayeza Khan. It became the slap of the century.

In a recent interview, Sawera Nadeem for the very first time talked about her entry as Maham. She discussed the whole slap scene in detail.

Sawera Nadeem Talks About Slap SceneI don’t believe in fake slaps nor I take fake slaps or give fake slaps. This is the only way I know how to act. I have worked in theatre for so long but I can’t fake act on fake slaps. Nowadays, in plays, it is not allowed to slap a woman.”

Sawera Nadeem Talks About Slap Scene

Sawera shared that it was a real slap and said, “I think there is no such rule about a woman hitting a woman on screen. I was quite realistic about it and Ayeza Khan being a professional too and I told her that I will slap you in real so your expressions can be more real. She was all for it. But they didn’t want to make it over-dramatic and we took two-three shots from different angles so that Ayeza’s reaction can be recorded.”
