Parwarish Episode 11 – Wali’s MDCAT Result Sparks Debate

Parwarish is a drama airing on ARY Digital and it is beautifully depicting the struggles of Gen Z and their parents. The show can get stereotypical at a few points but it is largely a breath of fresh air and targeted towards the younger audience. Wali and Maya played by Samar Jafri and Aina Asif are all set to join a medical college. Their MDCAT aka Medical Test Entrance Exam was held and they both got through. MDCAT is among the most difficult competitive exams in Pakistan. The way it was portrayed has started a debate.

Parwarish Episode 11 – Wali’s MDCAT Result Sparks Debate

Many people have to go through multiple attempts in order to qualify the MDCAT. Our hero Wali from Parwarish however did it in a single night. This pissed off many viewers who have gone through this insane journey. They called out how an aspirant’s struggle was belittled by showing how this can be done in a single night. Meanwhile Maya was shown reading Grey’s Anatomy which is a book you study when you are already in a medical college and not for the entrance exam.

Viewers spoke about this and said Parwarish should have researched it a bit before showing it off this way. One said, ” I am a repeater and trust me it is not this easy.” Another point raised was how Maya was already reading Grey’s Anatomy for her pre-medical exam. One user wrote,”Don’t think of the audience to be this stupid. Why is she studying an Anatomy book for her pre-medical exam.” One netizen said, “They are making fun of a medical aspirant’s journey.” This is what was being said:

Parwarish Director Speaks On Amal & Sameer’s Hug

He shared that we have normalized showing brothers who think honour killing is right and we do not show brothers who are loving and supportive. With Amal and Sameer such brothers were represented. He added that the two actors hugged on screen were actually two characters. Those two are siblings and shown as Mehram to each other. Parwaaz Hai Junoon – Film Review!

Parwaaz Hai Junoon – written by Farhat Ishtiaq, directed by Haseeb Hassan & produced by Momina Duraid is a Pakistani film released on Eid ul Azha & it is definitely a must-watch because right from the beginning, it just grabs your attention & each & every frame tells a tale of the hard work that has gone into making this movie what it is.

Parwaaz Hai Junoon is a story revolving around the lives of Pakistani Air Force Cadets & Pilots. The movie shows all the phases that one goes through in order to serve their country; from having a dream in their eyes to join the Air Force, to perseverance shown through the course of their training, to the time when the Country needs their services, alongside their personal lives where they are just regular people experiencing all kinds of emotions. The movie has a perfect blend of everything; there’s comedy, there’s romance, there’s drama & then such moments where you are left teary eyed because you have formed this connection with all the characters that they affect you on an emotional level. Parwaaz Hai Junoon highlights how everyone associated with Air Force is not only a fighter by profession, but is a fighter & a go-getter in every aspect of life – that is why all the characters have one thing in common & that is competitiveness. I must say what I liked the most about Parwaaz Hai Junoon is that it doesn’t portray everyone as a robotic hero, they all are shown as human beings who have their strengths & weaknesses, which makes it all quite realistic.

The story keeps on shifting between the past & the present, which some viewers might find confusing at first but it later makes sense & everything falls into place. Sania (Hania Amir) & Hamza (Hamza Ali Abbasi) are the lead characters with the entire movie based on their journey; together & on their own as well. Nadir (Shaz Khan), Saad (Ahad Raza Mir), Zaid (Syed Shafat Ali) & Rashid Minhas (Sikandar Vincent Khan) are the supporting characters who also have a very strong role to play. The cast also includes actors like Rasheed Naz, Asif Raza Mir, Hina Bayat, Marina Khan, Kubra Khan, Shamoon Abbasi, Adnan Jaffar, Farhaan Ali Agha, Faris Shafi & Mustafa Changezi & each one of them have played their roles to perfection. It is worth mentioning how fit & schmick everyone looked & how they all paid attention to the body language, fitting the characters they were assigned to portray.

The songs are really nice & have been picturized beautifully too but I feel they could have cut down on a couple of them to show us a bit more of their lives as Cadets in training. My favorite has to be the Qawwali because the scenario that it was used for struck a chord even more because of that. A good part of the movie is dedicated to personal lives of Hamza, Sania & Nadir that at times I felt I wanted to see more of what was happening in the Air Force Academy. It won’t be wrong to say that Parwaaz Hai Junoon can also be classified as a love story but yes, when the movie ends, you totally come out feeling satisfied with the message conveyed loud & clear that the love for Pakistan overruled everything for all the characters. It has been reinforced repeatedly that for men serving their country, nothing else matters more than Pakistan. Operation Zarb e Azb has also been touched upon & the way the Cadets are trained to become GD Pilots has been shown convincingly as well but I wish this part was elaborated further because it was done so so well & was quite interesting to watch!

The movie is visually appeasing & aesthetically sound with the director doing complete justice to the beauty of Pakistan. Every single frame is awe-inspiring & I must say, the opening sequence along with all the other flying sequences were brilliantly done. Special effects & graphics were totally impressive. I must say I am impressed that in a span of 2 hours 10 minutes, they managed to show so much & gave coverage to each & every character that you don’t feel anything was missed out.

I highly recommend Parwaaz Hai Junoon & I must say, Hamza Ali Abbasi has found a new fan in me. He surely has carried the movie on his shoulders & Hania Amir proved that she was a right bet for playing such a huge role because she was phenomenal & has a strong screen presence. The chemistry between the characters is amazing too. Shaz Khan & Ahad Raza Mir were brilliant. Kubra Khan didn’t have much role to play & I feel any other actress could have done that character just fine. Syed Shafaat Ali was phenomenal & he perfectly provided that comic quotient which was needed in the film. Haseeb Hassan deserves a special mention because without his vision, Parwaaz Hai Junoon wouldn’t have been this good. Camera work, direction, angles & different shots contributed a lot in setting the mood of the film right.

If you want to enjoy this movie completely, I will suggest going without expecting anything & it will surely surprise you. I really didn’t have anything on my mind & I took the movie as it came & ended up enjoying it a lot. For me, a blend of everything works & because the movie started on a lighter note & then got intense, it ended up being a complete package. I won’t give anything away but I will say, my favorite character has to be of Sherbatgul & to find out who he/she is, you will have to watch Parwaaz Hai Junoon yourself!

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Murad mentioned that he miss her mother a lot on different occasions and festivals.

Parveen Akbar’s Advice On Parenting Sons

Parenting is one of the most difficult tasks a person takes up in his/her life. Bringing a new life into this world and then teaching them right from wrong is not an easy job. Bringing up sons in a country like Pakistan where patriarchy is rampant is also very difficult. Boys learn from society that they are not truly accountable for a lot of things and it becomes the parents’ job to educate them rightly. Parveen Akbar is a veteran actress and she is a mom to three sons and one daughter. Her son Faizan Sheikh is also a star and he is known for his humility and professionalism.

She must read the script and needs to be very careful about her character, she should know what they want us to portray in their dramas and films.”

Talking about it, Parveen Akbar said, “You can’t say anything to heartless, cold and overly liberal children. Many people have such children—for example, Ayesha Khan had children, yet her death was still tragic. We have other such examples too, but in this case, I hold the parents responsible. It was their poor upbringing. Now, what can I say? It’s up to you how you raise your children—you can make them good human beings or leave them entirely on their own so they become too liberal and careless where they don’t take the responsibility of their parents. I don’t agree with Tauseeq Haider that we should not have children. Good children are the result of good upbringing, where parents teach them right and wrong.” Here is the link to the video of Parveen Akbar:

So! just like my grandmother, my mother-in-law was also strict, she was a Punjaban—she was a bit clever, a typical Punjabi woman. But there are some things in marriage that you need to tolerate if you are a homemaker. She used to have issues over small things. For instance, when I admitted my elder son to first grade at the age of three, she created a fuss, asking why I had sent him to school so early. I used to explain things to her. She even asked my husband to make me understand, but he said, ‘I can’t do this—you handle it yourself.’” Here is the link to the video:

Parizaad Second Last Episode – Finding a Purpose

This second last episode was just as well-written and meaningful as this drama has been right from the start. Tonight’s episode summed up the importance of dreams and how they help most people get through life. As we have seen through Parizaad’s story that sometimes dreaming about the unattainable can lead to frustrations and hopelessness. Dreams and aspirations were one of the main themes of this drama therefore I am glad that this theme was beautifully integrated into this second last episode. Apart from this, Parizaad’s decision to let go completely was also well established right at the outset. The poetry in the opening scenes was one of my favorites tonight since it had so many different meanings – from wanting to be completely unknown to taking a backseat for a change.

After introducing the viewers to so many layered characters that were a vital part of Parizaad’s journey in all these weeks, the writer surprised the viewers with yet another beautifully penned-down character in this episode. I feel that Parizaad’s characterizations and the actors chosen to translate these characters on screen were its biggest strengths throughout. Every character left a lasting impression and quite unexpectedly I warmed up to each one of these characters instantly. Tonight as well the new character that was introduced was just as impactful as all the others. I was expecting these last few days of Parizaad’s journey to be filled with sorrow but thankfully that was not entirely the case. The journey continues to be as meaningful as ever and even though Parizaad felt lost and hopeless in the opening scenes of this episode, by the end of the episode I felt as if he might have finally found his purpose in life.

The only part of this episode that did not work for me was the Parizaad/Annie track. There wasn’t even a single photograph of Parizaad which Annie requested to see when she got her eyesight back? Even though this scene was impactful because Annie crossed his path and did not even pause, logically it was unconvincing. The timeline was also confusing at times but even then this was definitely another unexpected, heartwarming, and well-written episode.

Leaving Everything Behind

This second last episode of Parizaad opened on a grim note. Parizaad had already decided to leave everything by the end of the previous episode. The poetic verses in the background helped the viewers understand Parizaad’s mindset. He no longer wanted to control things and wanted to leave everything to chance and fate. That is what I believe was meant by not wanting to be the central character in the story anymore! After being the center of attention as P.Z.Mir, Parizaad now wanted another identity, one which would not attract attention and he would be able to live a life free from pressure. For the longest time, he had been doing everything in his power to navigate his life but now he was headed in a completely unknown direction. Parizaad always had the confidence to start afresh therefore the confidence with which he started this journey and welcomed whatever came his way was perfectly in line with his character. This character and its journey have always fascinated me since he has not only dared to dream but also had the guts to leave everything behind and leave when he felt he was not happy with his present life.

Even though Parizaad struggled with self-love and acceptance all his life, his resilience allowed him to do many such things which most people in such a situation would not be able to do. He did try to take his life once but most of the time he always found a purpose in life and managed to go on with life even with all the heartache. Tonight, Parizaad went from P.Z.Mir to Ahmed – another new identity that brought with it a new life as well. This time around too Parizaad was in a position to change people’s lives not with his money but with his knowledge. He was always shown as an intelligent and a well-read man therefore this new role as a teacher and a mentor suited him so well. Yet again, he helped someone he met when they needed it the most. Even after living a luxurious life as P.Z.Mir, Parizaad was more than comfortable living a life that demanded so much from him and was completely void of comfort. He found his purpose in life, at least for now and if he chooses this to be his main goal for the rest of his life, he will be truly making a difference in young people’s lives in the best way possible.

Parizaad Second Last Episode – Finding a Purpose

Parizaad’s interactions with his new friend, the headmaster/teacher, were penned down beautifully throughout. Right from the start when he told Pari that he didn’t look like a local to the point when Parizaad became a close friend he could rely on, these interactions were such that I felt that Parizaad was finally where he belonged! I just hope that he does not pack his bags one more time because showing Parizaad dedicate his life to this meaningful purpose would be the best way to end this drama. He has the monetary resources as well to expand the school. Tonight, he did not use his influence or money in any way.

Even though the scene showing Annie crossing paths with Parizaad was flawed logically, it did have a symbolic significance. Annie had made all these tall claims and Parizaad believed her as well but the fact was that she was only human therefore she failed to recognize the person she claimed to know so well now that she had her eyesight back. She was also happy with her life and had new-found confidence. Is Annie still looking for Parizaad or has she moved on? Is she yet another one of those people who were simply passing through Parizaad’s life? Or will she be back in his life? Parizaad was shocked when Annie did not ‘recognize’ him which meant he was expecting a different reaction!

Final Remarks

Tonight’s episode shifted the direction of Parizaad’s life altogether. Not only did his lifestyle and goals in life change but even the locations changed altogether which was such a wonderful idea. The scenic beauty and the way the simple life of these hardworking locals was covered made the difference between this world and the one Parizaad had come from even more apparent. This was another engaging and touching episode of Parizaad which was very impressively put together. The writer penned down this phase of Parizaad’s journey beautifully, the director breathed life into all these scenes and the performances continued to be mind-blowing. I am eagerly looking forward to the finale especially because now there is a chance that Parizaad’s journey will have a meaningful ending.

Did you watch tonight’s episode of Parizaad? Do you think that there is still a chance that Parizaad and Annie might end up together? Or is Parizaad destined to achieve greater things? I absolutely loved the smile on Parizaad’s face when he met those students, it was as if he hadn’t smiled this genuinely in a long time. I feel that he is meant to do this, his love for Urdu and giving both fit in so well with this profession. Do share your views about it.

Parizaad Last Episode Story Review – A New Beginning

Zindagi mohabbat ke bina kaati ja sakti hei maqsad ke bina nahin…Parizaad’s amazing journey finally came to an end tonight and it would be safe to say that Tuesday night will not be the same again! This was the only drama I found myself looking forward to every week because it was not just a wholesome journey of an unusual protagonist but it always gave me so much to write about in the reviews. The meaningful dialogues and scenarios made even the most unbelievable and unexpected situations worthwhile. Ahmed Ali Akbar remained the star of the show right till the end. This drama wouldn’t have been the same had he not been chosen to play this role. Parizaad has definitely won him the kind of fan following and appreciation that few actors get, and he has truly earned it. Hashim Nadeem’s script was novel and engaging throughout. Shehzad Kashmiri’s direction and attention to detail made this story relatable and entertaining.

The Last Episode

Did Parizaad’s last episode do justice to the drama? I must say that I was expecting Parizaad to have such an ending especially because of the direction the story took in the second last episode. The second last episode clearly indicated that Parizaad was more interested in looking for an actual purpose in life than anything else. However, I felt that some of the scenes in this last episode could have been far more impactful. Also, dedicating more than 30 minutes to the recap was unnecessary; Parizaad’s entire journey could easily have been covered in half the time in a crisper manner. This last episode was not as powerful as I was expecting it to be. The last scene could have been more intense if Annie and Parizaad were facing each other instead of facing the camera most of the time and delivering their dialogues. Since the drama overall banked highly on the most bizarre situations and the makers made them work, the writer could have easily saved Parizaad from the disappointment by giving Annie the kind of dil ki nazar which he expected from her!

The fact that right till the end Parizaad did not believe in love and wanted to dedicate his life to his new-found ambition went to show that he still believed he was not worth loving. Annie’s dialogues made perfect sense; it will take time for Parizaad to unlearn everything he had learned through his experiences over the years. It was quite apparent that even though Annie did not recognize Parizaad instantly, she still valued him just as much as she did before and was willing to put in the effort to make him change his opinion about love. This conversation in a way did guarantee that eventually Annie will be able to make Parizaad believe in love.

Parizaad Last Episode Story Review – A New Beginning

The most important takeaway for me was the importance of self-love and self-acceptance. Also, the role the societal standards of beauty play in pressurizing people who do not fulfill the criteria into trying harder to earn acceptance was dealt with in the most prolific manner. Even though Parizaad was intelligent, hard-working, and sensitive, he struggled for acceptance and most importantly for love even though he deserved to be loved. In the end as well, even though Annie made it quite clear that she would rather be with Parizaad than Sharjeel, he failed to accept her love because he was too afraid of acknowledging it. After being rejected continuously for years, being accepted felt frightening and difficult to accept.

Final Remarks

The best part of this last episode was that Parizaad had an ending that was meaningful. Even in this last episode, Hashim Nadeem had a brand new message about education. Parizaad was always shown as a giver therefore in the end it was only natural for him to dedicate his life to helping people. In order to keep Parizaad’s identity a secret, the writer went to all the extremes to give various explanations but when it came to Annie and Parizaad’s ending, the writer had a very practical approach. I wish this track too was dealt with in a relatively less practical manner. There was clearly love in Annie’s eyes for Parizaad yet he refused to see it! After watching this last episode, I felt as if Parizaad’s journey was still continuing. It was not entirely the kind of ending that puts you at peace as a viewer especially after watching Parizaad suffer for so long. He deserved to be happier in the end. However, it definitely was a new beginning for Parizaad, the start of another journey!

Parizaad was definitely a trendsetter in terms of storytelling. It had a broad canvas and the writer did not hold back, compromise on details, or lose his grip on the story at any point. The only aspect which needed improvement was the way Parizaad’s relationship with his family was covered once he moved out of the house. Hashim Nadeem penned down Moosa’s track (Raqs-e-Bismil) in the same manner; his family was completely out of touch and picture once he fled home. Since there was so much focus on Parizaad’s relationship with his sister, in particular, Saeeda should have been part of the story throughout. Such unexplainable disappearances of characters, when they can be easily kept in the loop through a telephonic conversation have never made sense to me. This was however a small glitch that did not impact Parizaad’s story overall but definitely left the viewers wanting to see more of these scenes.

The meaningful aspects of the story definitely stood out more than any other. From putting forward the message through different tracks about how deceptive looks are to showing that money cannot buy happiness, Hashim Nadeem touched upon many different subjects without preaching. Parizaad’s multi-dimensional and unusual characters and their stories were definitely the most impressive aspect of the script. The well-written dialogues added meaning to the drama. The director and the producers deserve tons of appreciation for introducing new faces through this project; actors such as Raza Ali Abid, Adeel Afzal, and Asad Mumtaz Malik. It was also an absolute treat to watch all the other seasoned actors perform their roles with the usual dedication on-screen. Ahmed Ali Akbar will forever be remembered as Parizaad, just like Imran Ashraf is for playing Bhola in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi. When actors choose to play such roles and put in so much hard work into making these characters come alive on-screen, they deserve all the praise and awards so that others can follow. For me apart from Ahmed Ali Akbar, Saboor Aly stood out more than any other actor since she truly surprised me with her portrayal. I hope she gets to experiment more in the future as well.

I would like to thank all of you who were a part of this journey, I read the comments regularly and enjoyed our discussions, and it would not have been the same without your input.

Did you like Parizaad’s ending? Are you going to miss the drama? Share your views; I would love to hear from you.

Parizaad Episode 9 Story Review – Continues To Impress

Every other week, the writer Hashim Nadeem, introduces his viewers to a new character that determines what direction Parizaad’s story takes. Like every other character, Parizaad’s new mentor, the ustaad lead him to a direction that will perhaps change the course of Parizaad’s life altogether. The writer has effectively used direct and indirect characterization that makes it easier for the viewers to understand these characters. All of these characters are round or dynamic, except for the bhabhis! The writer and the director deserve a lot of appreciation for the smooth transition from one phase of Parizaad’s life to the other. Parizaad is also turning out to be one of those rare dramas that make the most of star power; each actor has been assigned a role that leaves an impact. Usually, when the production houses over-rely on star power, they end up compromising on the script. Here, every actor is well-suited for the roles that they are playing – especially all the central characters.

Laila Zuberi, who was for the longest time being typecast, is also playing a supporting role in the drama which shows a completely different side of her! Ahmed Ali Akbar’s performance continues to be outstanding; he has made sure that this character comes alive on screen in such a way that it truly becomes the driving force of the plot. After watching this particular drama, I am more convinced than ever that artful storytelling starts with penning down characters that take you on their journey with them. Parizaad has managed to do that effortlessly.

New Beginnings

Last week Parizaad redefined his priorities and this week his new boss showed him a way through which he could make his dreams come true. There were times tonight when it seemed as if even with all his wisdom, Pari knew little about the ways of the world. This aspect of his personality reminded me of Moosa from Raqs-e-Bismil. Hashim Nadeem’s heroes always start off from a point where they don’t know much about the world and end up learning so much along the way. It is interesting that even though Parizaad got rejected from some of those people he expected the most from and from the one girl he ever fell in love with but he has also been blessed with some great mentors. If it were Parizaad versus the world kind of a situation his journey wouldn’t have been as endearing as it is now. The fact that he has met all kinds of people so far makes his journey easier to relate to. It goes to show that the writer wanted to keep this character real and did not try extra hard to make the viewers feel for him. Parizaad decided to move to Karachi in order to make it big; a decision his bhabhis were quite happy with because it was like killing two birds with one stone kind of a situation for them. This way Parizaad would move out of the house and they could also benefit from his good fortune once he makes it big.

Parizaad Episode 9 Story Review – Continues To Impress

There were multiple new characters introduced in this episode, as is the case every time Parizaad enters a new phase of his life. This time around Behroze Kareem (Nauman Ijaz) and Janu are the central characters in this part of his journey. It remains to be seen what role they will be playing. This new track is off to an exciting start as Parizaad will immediately win his new boss over with his honesty even though he will be pressurized to stay silent. Behroze Kareem appears to be another dynamic character, as was evident from the OST as well. The information Janu gave also gave a primary introduction to him. Nauman Ijaz made his presence felt in that one scene and I am waiting to see more of him. It is interesting how Parizaad’s name is always the first thing people notice about him for obvious reasons.

Parizaad was introduced to Karachi’s ‘modern’ living and his naughty expressions were just too cute! It is interesting how he enjoys certain situations which are brand new to him and is quick to share his thoughts about them. Saeeda and Parizaad’s farewell scene was definitely the most emotional one in this episode. This was the highlight of the episode because even at such a young age, Parizaad has concerns which most people his age are not even aware of! Apart from this, the siblings’ bond has always been the most genuine one in the drama, so far. Parizaad still dreams about Naheed and she continues to be his first love! He is convinced that no one will ever fall in love with him and that seems to be his biggest regret in life.

The bhabhis are more inquisitive than ever to find out why Saeeda is happily married even now after everything they did. Sooner or later, they will find out the truth and it remains to be seen how that will be linked to Parizaad’s track. These women’s sole purpose in life is to make sure that Saeeda and Parizaad do not get any happiness at all! Even though they are not the best part about this drama but I have warmed up to their scenes. Naheed, it seems, is not too happy with her life. Her scenes keep you wondering because she has not shared much about her married life so far.

Final Remarks

Parizaad’s journey is exciting, real, and as engaging as a drama can get. Ahmed Ali Akbar continues to be the star of the show. Tonight’s episode was well-paced and brilliantly put together. Parizaad is setting the bar higher with every passing episode. Not a single new character has disappointed me so far; I am eagerly waiting to meet more such characters.
