When she played the role of a fashion model in Yeh Raha Dil, her attitude was right but her clothing choices were wrong. Anum Gohar has a perfect personality, good height and modellish figure, therefore she can carry anything gracefully, provided the choices she makes are good. In drama serial Khaas, Anum Gohar got a decent amount of screen time and in almost all of her scenes, her clothing and overall styling was poor. The character of Nida came from a wealthy family and her mother as well as brother were always very focused on the outer appearances of people around them, so the kind of clothes Nida wore and the look she carried made her look like she didn’t belong to this family.

Nida’s character was of a simple young girl who was in love but it looks like Anum Gohar took the word ‘simple’ too seriously and then decided to translate it by mixing and matching different lawn prints which looked like they belonged to her personal super casual wardrobe and the plain black dupatta became a staple. In a few scenes Nida also wore formal dresses going by the occasions like her brother’s wedding and family get-togethers and even in those scenes her dresses were bad. Anum Gohar also went for thicker fuller eyebrows and ended up filling them so much that they looked like the only prominent feature of her face. Anum Gohar needs to make better choices when it comes to clothing and she needs to figure out what kind of makeup looks best on her because she is naturally one of the prettiest actresses of the industry.

Ammara Chaudhry

Ammara Chaudhry has recently joined the drama industry but she is now being seen in a lot of different dramas. Ammara in the initial phase of her acting career, that is why she is definitely unable to figure out what looks good on her and how much is too much? In drama serial Balaa, Ammara’s character was of a newly wedded girl who was dealing with toxic in-laws. Due to it being a short-lived character, she got away with the kind of styling she chose for herself however in drama serial Rishte Bikte Hain which is currently on-air, Ammara Chaudhry’s styling is totally wrong. Ammara is playing a role of a university student in Rishte Bikte Hain, however she has gone for heavier cakey makeup look which is always about overly made up brows and blown out dark edged eye makeup look and full face of thick foundation.

Although Rida’s character went through a transformation but her look before her decision of updating her look was far more realistic and believable. It is hard to believe that a university student, in the humid weather of Karachi is sporting a full face of makeup and fashionably braided hairstyles. Ammara Chauhdry is definitely one of those actors who need to cut down on the amount of makeup they wear and also improve their clothing choices because her overall look is not very appealing in the drama Rishte Bikte Hain. She is a good actor but giving her characters a realistic feel will add more substance to the roles she plays.

Anumta Qureshi

Anumta Qureshi is also a young new addition to the drama industry who has a lot of work in a short span of time. Anumta Qureshi usually plays supporting characters and the way she stylizes herself makes it obvious that she calls for attention a bit too much. In drama serial Kaisa Hai Naseeban, Anumta Qureshi’s false eyelashes were the biggest distraction that her character carried. Anumta Qureshi loves glamour and she doesn’t hold back in showing it, even if it fits the description of her character or not. Anumta Qureshi definitely should take a step back and opt for better choices, both in terms of clothing as well as makeup.

Arsalan Faisal

Arsalan Faisal is another one of those actors who puts in a lot of effort into looking good on screen but most of the times, his choices are off and do not do him a favor. Arsalan Faisal is naturally very fair so for him to rely this much on makeup which is detectable on TV screens is a poor judgment. Saad Qureshi does not shy away from wearing foundation shade lighter than his skin tone in order to look fair on screen but the sad part is that he or his makeup artists forget to drag it down to his neck which make the difference between his made up and real complexion a lot more visible.

As much as it is a good thing for an actor to change his overall looks for different dramas, Saad Qureshi tends to go a little overboard in his clothing choices too because he seems made up and too overly done in all of his dramas. Saad Qureshi has worked hard to have the kind of body that looks lean and fit, however wearing t-shirts with broad and loose collars is an unflattering and poor choice. Saad Qureshi however did look really good in drama serial Meer Abru because he stylized his character the right way but yes, too much makeup there.

Saniya Shamshad

Saniya Shamshad has done a lot of work and she has proved her mettle as an actor however, the sad part is that even after so much of an experience and working with so many people, Saniya Shamshad has not really figured out what looks good on her and how much makeup does she actually need. In a currently on-air drama Rishte Bikte Hain, Saniya Shamshad’s character screams OTT from every single angle. Saniya Shamshad has also gone for thicker fuller eyebrows following the current trend that is, but the sad part is that she has pushed them to such extent that they look unkempt and untidy. The amount of blush on and highlighter that she has worn is also something that does not really go with her character considering that she is in an unhappy marriage with a husband who is selfish and belittles her. The character of Hania comes from an affluent background but she is a simple-minded girl who has been raised with a lot of ethics and values, so to see her being overly glammed up like a doll, wearing the fanciest clothes makes it hard to feel for her character. Some of her clothing choices are definitely good but most of the times, she has worn the kind of dresses that make it look like she is ready to attend wedding reception of her best friend. Saniya Shamshad should definitely hire better stylists and makeup artist who know how to say no when she starts going overboard with her choices.

As much as Shehroz has played a variety of roles in his career, he is one of those actors who despite acting well can not pull off a drama singlehandedly. He always needs a huge cast around him for his drama to work. Shehroz Sabzwari’s career began on a high note but no one could assume that he will now settle for minuscule roles and not pay attention to making an impact as an actor. His role in Deewar e Shab is a perfect example of him being a part of that drama but still not contributing much to its popularity or viewership.

Muneeb Butt

Muneeb Butt has made a name for himself and has paved a way to his success with his sheer hard-work. He is a fine actor and no matter which character he chooses, he always does justice to it. Somehow, Muneeb Butt too is one of those actors who despite being popular always need support from other actors who are more popular to draw attention to the project. His performance in Koi Chand Rakh was probably the best thing about his drama, also his drama Kaisa Hai Naseeban did really well in terms of popularity because the storyline was good and viewers wanted to see how the female lead dealt with her problems and put them to rest. Muneeb Butt is quite popular as a celebrity but when it comes to selling the drama his name alone is never enough.

Minal Khan

Minal Khan has been a part of the industry for a long time now. She too began her acting career as a child artist but slowly broke through that image and emerged as an actor who was capable of playing mature roles. However, unlike her sister Aiman Khan, Minal Khan has failed to prove herself as that actor who can grab the attention of the viewers. Minal Khan has done a lot of primetime dramas and has been a protagonist but it wasn’t until her drama began and the story progressed, that it grabbed the attention of the viewers. The reason behind this could be the fact that she got too comfortable playing the typical roles where she was made to cry and portray the weaker side of women.

Minal Khan’s current drama Jalan is on air and is getting a lot of attention because she is playing a negative role for the first time. It might have the potential to turn things around in terms of her popularity and presence in any drama henceforth but sadly, the story of this drama is as such which already has viewers rolling their eyes, this could backfire as well.

Komal Aziz Khan

Komal Aziz Khan is a brilliant actor. She is one of those actors from the younger lot who is very passionate about her work and puts in a lot of effort to give her characters a very different look. Shehzad Sheikh

Shehzad Sheikh has done a variety of roles over the years and has proved his mettle as an actor. He is one such actor who does justice to all the emotions that his character has to portray, however, his association alone with any project is never enough for the viewers to tune to his dramas. There has to be a huge cast surrounding him for the actual drama to attain popularity. Shehzad Sheikh however has been a part of the primetime dramas for the most part of his career and has done real good ones to his credit. Currently, he is seen in Raaz e Ulfat but the main actor who drew the attention of the viewers to it was Yumna Zaidi.

Asad Siddique

Asad Siddique has also experimented a lot over the years but somehow, he too has become comfortable in his own accord and does not strive hard to be the protagonist because probably he too has an idea that he can not pull the crowd for his dramas. In the name of revival of Pakistani Cinema, our actors have gotten a chance to showcase their talent on a whole new level. It takes a lot for an actor to make their presence felt on the big screen. A lot of things things can get ignored or go unnoticed on a small screen, but when it comes to the big screen, it is very unforgiving and demands a lot more from an actor. Acting is one of the major aspects that an actor has to showcase that too on a very grand scale but that is not where it stops. For an actor to make a mark and prove their mettle in a film, alongside acting, they require body language, right attitude, screen presence and dancing skills as well.

When the Pakistani Film Industry was on the path of revival, a lot of the movies in the initial days relied heavily on item numbers. It was like they used item numbers to attract the audience. All the actors who decided to do item numbers were criticised but it didn’t deter them from performing them again and again, to the point where people got used to the item or dance numbers in a movie in general.

Over the years, more and more actors have come forward and taken dance numbers as a challenge and they put a lot of effort in them as well. Our actors are seen working hard on their physiques, their clothes, hair and makeup to add more flavor and charm to their songs and dance numbers in general but the recent movies have proved that our actors still lack that confidence and accurate moves to make their dance performances impactful, memorable and mesmerizing.

This year, a lot of movies were released and all of them had a considerable number of dance performances given out by our top actors but as they released, the audience were not only left speechless, but felt underwhelmed too. Where it is nice to see our actors exploring different domains and not holding back, it is unfortunate that despite putting so much effort, they still end up making a point that the original is always better than a copied content, original being Indian dance numbers in this context.

Actors Who Can Not Dance:

Bilal Ashraf:

The team of film Superstar left no stone unturned to promote this movie heavily, to the point where it became bothersome for the TV buffs seeing Bilal Ashraf and Mahira Khan again and again. Bilal Ashraf had a special song dedicated to his character in the movie titled ‘Dharak Bharak’, which was a total rip off of Ranveer Singh’s ‘Tattad Tattad’. Even though Bilal Ashraf did claim that he was going for the exact vibe, it then became too obvious that he was not only uncomfortable but totally underperformed as well. His body language was awkward and his dance moves were stiff and wrong. With every passing frame Bilal Ashraf proved how and why Pakistani actors lack those dance skills because it just does not come naturally to them. Bilal Ashraf thought he was doing the audience of Superstar a huge favor by showing his bare body but it proved that by the end of the day, size of clothes do not matter in a dance number, what matters the most is the dance itself. I’m glad Bilal Ashraf’s bubble has been burst.

Maya Ali:

Maya Ali’s song ‘Balma Bhagora’ from her movie ‘Paray Hut Love’ got a lot of attention too but for all the wrong reasons. Maya Ali was supposed to be the star of that song but Zara Noor Abbas beat her to it and stole the show. This song was not only criticised for the editing and lack of synchronization, but Maya Ali‘s dance overall was equally bad and brought a lot of criticism her way. Her lines were not clear and it was too obvious that she struggled while competing with the pace of the song because she left her steps incomplete and moved to the next one haphazardly. Once again, Maya Ali showed that dancing did not come naturally to her. Maya Ali did garner a lot of appreciation for her acting in the movie but when it came to her dance performance, she showed that she needed a lot more finessing and practice. In the song ‘Haye Dil Bechara’, Maya did dance well but then, she had slow and limited steps that didn’t requite a lot of work from her but when it comes to the actual song Balma Bhagora which was hyped up by the team, Maya Ali couldn’t prove herself. Once again, length of clothing does not matter if your dancing is not on point!

Kubra Khan:

Kubra Khan has made a name for herself in a very short span. Her overall screen presence has landed her a role (big or small) in quite a lot of movies from the big banners. However, Kubra Khan may act with some ease but when it comes to dancing, she makes it quite evident that she is stiff and is having a hard time dancing. In her recent song ‘Dharak Bharak’, where she was supposedly the ‘item girl’ in the song, her entire body movement was not in sync and even though she looked like a Diva, it was obvious that she put a lot of effort in looking beautiful on-screen but when it came to the actual dancing, she was uncomfortable and may be missed a lot of practice sessions and rehearsals. In those scenes where she had to be in physical contact with Bilal Ashraf, she seemed uncomfortable yet again. In Parwaz Hai Junoon, Kubra Khan had a small dancing sequence in the song ‘Naache Re’ even in that song she seemed stiff and her facial expressions were as if she was finding dance as hard as a duty!

Mawra Hocane:

Mawra Hocane is a confident actor and she has made a name for herself in the drama industry. Mawra Hocane explored different horizon and made her Pakistani debut with Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. In the movie she was paired with Fahad Mustafa and they both had a dance number ‘Aya Lariye’ to perform on. Where Fahad Mustafa stole the show, Mawra Hocane seemed clueless and her dance moves were sloppy just like her body language. Mawra Hocane showed that she was not a confident dancer and she was having a very hard time carrying her own weight as well as the weight of her heavy dress that she was wearing in that song. Most of the time, Mawra Hocane was jumping like a jack which made me wonder may be this was again her confidence that was giving her this confidence that she can get away with this kind of sloppy dancing in a movie. I feel bad for those audience who had the misfortune of watching ‘this’ performance on a big screen. I am sure their eyes are still recovering from the traumatic experience.

Hareem Farooq:

Hareem Farooq is an effortless actor and she has that screen presence to carry herself as a lead in any film on a big screen but when it comes to dancing Hareem looks awkward. Hareem Farooq definitely puts in a lot of effort and looking at her dance does make you feel that she has rehearsed non-stop, may be so much that when the actual time came to shoot the songs, her muscles were sore and she couldn’t complete her lines. Hareem Farooq is a great actor and a confident performer, but she definitely is not an effortless dancer. Hareem has such a personality which can not go unnoticed, that is why her average dancing skills are hard to ignore too.

Actors Who Can Dance:

Fahad Mustafa:

Fahad Mustafa has been a part of the industry for a very long time. Fahad Mustafa is one such actor who has every secret of trade up his sleeve and that is why, no matter which domain he ventures into, he gives his 100% and convinces everyone why he is so deserving of the fame and name that he has achieved over a period of time. Fahad Mustafa makes his dance numbers a visual treat. He is a confident performer and more than that, he makes sure to do justice to the choreography that he has invested his time learning. If you pick any of the songs that Fahad Mustafa has danced in, you will see him outdoing himself every single time. Fahad Mustafa has surely proved that he is one of those few Pakistani actors who definitely know how to dance and make it seem like he is having a great time dancing on those songs.

Hania Amir:

Hania Amir has appeared in few movies in her comparatively shorter span in the industry but she has carved a name for herself and has achieved a lot of success due to her acting and beautiful appearance. Hania Amir has also proved that she can surely dance and effortlessly at that. In Parwaz Hai Junoon’s song ‘Naache Re’ Hania Amir’s dance moves seemed effortless and mesmerizing. She gave this song the right kind of treatment it deserved and she danced without holding back. Even though those dance moves were very subtle and didn’t require a lot of work, Hania Amir’s body language and overall demeanor was perfect in that song.

Mehwish Hayat:

Mehwish Hayat has been a part of the Pakistani Film Industry ever since its initial and struggling days. Mehwish Hayat has given a lot of dance performances in almost every movie that she has been a part of and she always has given convincing treatment to her dance numbers. Mehwish Hayat is one of those few actresses who are absolutely confident on big screen and know how to grab the attention of the viewers. Mehwish Hayat has danced on all kinds of songs varying from wedding songs to songs that are shot in clubs, but she has always proved how versatile she is when it comes to dancing. Mehwish is a phenomenal performer and she is exceptionally confident.

Sohai Ali Abro:

Sohai Ali Abro has also ventured into movies and is doing well for herself. As much as Sohai Ali Abro is selective in choosing her projects, she is the kind of actor who moulds herself completely in any character that is assigned to her. There are many gifted Pakistani actors who have recently and in the past nailed negative roles. It takes a lot of courage for an actor to take up a role that will make the viewers hate their character altogether. There are some actors who played these negative roles so well that they were continuously seen playing such roles. There are others who understand the importance of experimenting with different roles. Such actors made sure that after doing a negative character, they did something entirely different. There are also those actors who have either never played an out-and-out negative character or have not been seen playing such a character for a long time. Even though these actors are considered the best in the industry but somehow they shy away from playing negative characters.

Some of these actors have lately focused entirely on playing likable characters and others prefer playing grey characters which are easier to feel for and understand. All of these actors, in our opinion, are completely capable of playing negative characters therefore we would love to see them in roles that give the viewers a chance to see their versatility.

Sami Khan

Sami Khan is an exceptional actor who can effortlessly make the viewers fall in love with and relate to his characters. He is also one of those few actors on this list who have actually done a variety of roles. He has even played characters that were negative, to begin with, but then they redeemed themselves. It won’t be wrong to say that he excels in translating such characters on screen. He has however never played an out-and-out negative character which the viewers had a reason to hate. Since Sami Khan understands his characters so well and his portrayals are always brilliant, we would love to see him in a character such as the one played by Omair Rana in Pyar Ke Sadqay or Adnan Siddiqui in Mere Pass Tum Ho. Sami Khan has the screen presence and acting ability to make such characters come alive on screen. We are convinced that if Sami Khan chooses to play such a character, he will leave everyone in awe.

Mahira Khan

We have all seen Mahira Khan playing more or less similar roles in dramas. On the big screen, Mahira Khan has often experimented but we have never seen her playing an absolutely negative character in any of her projects. Even though Mahira has a certain style of acting that is perhaps more appropriate for the kind of roles she plays but we are pretty sure that under the direction of a capable director, Mahira Khan can excel in playing a negative character. Since she is already thinking about making a comeback to dramas, it would be such a great idea to do so with a character that we have never seen her play on television. We have seen some really interesting negative roles even in dramas therefore we are pretty sure that our writers can pen down a role that would be perfect for this comeback on television.

Hira Mani

Hira Mani has got herself recognized as one of the leading ladies of the Pakistani drama industry in a short span of time. She is really conscious of the kind of projects she takes up. She makes sure that every time she is part of a project, the characters she plays are different from one another. Even then, she hasn’t even once played a negative character. It is quite evident from her interviews that she chooses the kind of characters she can relate to and perhaps that is the reason why negative characters have never appealed to her. She was even offered to play the role Hania Aamir did later on in the drama serial Dil Ruba. Well, we are glad that she did not opt for this particular character since that wasn’t the kind of negative character we want to see Hira Mani playing. Even a negative character should have a certain kind of appeal and depth which that character was definitely lacking. Most often the negative characters for females are not written well, we hope that one of the writers can pen down such a character which Hira Mani would like to translate on-screen.

Humayun Saeed

Humayun Saeed played a negative character in the drama serial Kaafir but lately, we have been watching him choose the kind of roles that have made the viewers fall in love with his characters and the actor of course. Even though we truly love the choices Humayun Saeed has made recently, we do feel that watching him play a role such as that of Shehwar will definitely be exciting. Interestingly enough everyone around him also felt the same way when the casting for Mere Pass Tum Ho was being finalized but Humayun Saeed was the one who chose to play Danish’s character and made it memorable. We are certain that if Humayun Saeed takes up a negative role with the same intent and dedication, he can make it memorable as well. Like many other actors who mesmerized the viewers with such positive roles and then surprised them with their portrayals in negative roles, we feel that Humayun Saeed has what it takes to surprise the viewers in a similar manner.

Sonya Hussyn

Sonya Hussyn is another actress who has extraordinary acting skills but it won’t be wrong to say that she has always made a conscious effort to choose roles that are not negative. Even in Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida, the writer constantly tried to make the viewers feel sorry for Ulfat’s character ignoring the fact that she was greedy enough to ‘sell’ her husband. There is no denying the fact that she can indeed make the viewers feel for her characters. Sonya Hussyn also refused to play Mehwish’s role in Mere Pass Tum Ho because according to her it showed women in a bad light. She was perhaps talking about cheating because otherwise, Ulfat was just as greedy as Mehwish. Sonya Hussyn is definitely someone who does not want to play a negative character for her own reasons; this is perhaps her way of being a feminist. We do feel however that a well-written negative character would be perfect for Sonya since she knows how to breathe life into all the characters she chooses to play. We hope that this year Sonya Hussyn will use her great acting skills to give us one such memorable character.

Yumna Zaidi

Yumna Zaidi has been a part of the drama industry for a considerable amount of time now. In the initial years, she used to experiment a lot and that has definitely continued to date because she is one of the very few actresses who makes sure that none of her projects or roles are similar. Yumna Zaidi has definitely done some negative characters at an early stage of her career in dramas like Rishte Kuch Adhoore Se and Mausam, however, during that period she was very much underrated. Yumna Zaidi is now one of the leading actresses of the current era and has a massive fan following, people love her for her craft and phenomenal acting skills, this is why her limited appearance in Ishq Zahe Naseeb where she played the role of a complex Shakira was very much appreciated. It has given us an idea of how powerfully she can portray a negative character if it is well written and is executed appropriately. Yumna Zaidi definitely has it in her to convey all such strong and intense emotions that would make her negative character a talk of the town.

Mansha Pasha

Mansha Pasha has been a part of the industry for a decent amount of time but it is only recently that she has come to the forefront and has people looking forward to her projects. Mansha Pasha is also one of those actresses who believe in variety therefore she likes to experiment a lot. She has played negative characters in Mohabbat Subha Ka Sitara Hai and Surkh Chandni, for which she got a lot of recognition and appreciation for the effortless performances, therefore it won’t be wrong to say that Mansha Pasha can definitely shine in a negative character and make it look good. The best part is that she definitely knows how to subtly and underplay such characters which definitely is going to enhance her performance in such a role.

Urwa Hocane

There is no denying the fact that Urwa Hocane is a very confident actor and it is because of this very confidence that she finds herself performing her characters with so much ease irrespective of how tough they are. Urwa Hocane has it in her to own and embrace any character that she takes up, therefore it would definitely be interesting to see her playing a negative role. She is such a performer that can either make or break a drama so seeing her play a negative character would be nothing short of a treat. Urwa has been very selective about her work and because she continues to work in films, she does not really take many TV projects, this is exactly why after Udaari she was seen in Mushk after so many years. She has done negative character at the beginning of her career in the drama serial Madiha Maliha but it was a very typical story based on sister rivalry. Urwa Hocane should definitely take up a negative role but since she has matured over the years especially with her project choices, it would definitely be interesting to see her nailing such a character.

Saba Qamar

Saba Qamar has established herself as one of the biggest stars of the Pakistani showbiz industry. This is the reason why every time she is associated with a project, it gets a lot of attention. Saba Qamar has worked a lot of dramas in the past but in recent years, she has become a lot more conscious and choosy about her work. Another reason is that because she also works in movies, she makes sure that her TV appearances are substantial and unique. Saba Qamar has the type of aura that can make any character unforgettable, this is exactly why even after so many years, viewers still remember her performance and character from the drama serial Maat, where she played a negative younger sister. Saba Qamar has definitely come a long way and makes viewers wait for her dramas, it would definitely be interesting to see her taking up a negative role and portraying it to perfection.

Sajal Aly

Sajal Aly is a big name in the Pakistani drama industry. She has worked very hard starting from a young age to be where she is. Over the years she has proved her mettle as an actor again and again by taking up a variety of roles, therefore, it can be said with full confidence that irrespective of the nature of the role, she can definitely do full justice to it. Sajal has done negative roles in the past in dramas like O Rangreza and Ladon Main Pali, therefore she has given the viewers a taste of what it would be like seeing her in a role similar to that one too. It is because she can breathe life into any character that she takes up, it would be quite an experience seeing Sajal taking up a negative role and doing complete justice to it.

Neelam Munir Khan

Neelam Munir Khan rose to fame with a negative character that she played in Dil Mom Ka Diya. After her famous drama Dil Mom Ka Diya, Neelam Munir definitely has taken up substantial roles and has done complete justice to them, therefore it won’t be too much to wish to see her appearing in such kind of character once again because of the finesse and ease with which she performed a complicated and negative character of Ulfat goes to show how much of a grip she can have on such characters to even make them believable. Neelam Munir Khan has done plenty of roles in different dramas but it won’t be wrong to say that it was purely because of her phenomenal performance that Dil Mom Ka Diya became so popular and viewers loved to see Ulfat’s antics.
