DRAMAS THEN AND NOW!

0

Pakistani dramas have always been a great source of Entertainment for the people of Pakistan, it’s a very proud moment indeed that our dramas does not only provide entertainment to our people but all over the world e.g India, Arab and European Countries. A glance at a past and you will come to know that we use to make wonderful dramas with thought provoking stories. How can I forget Ankahi, Tanhayyian, Dhuwan, Alpha Bravo Charlie etc.

At the start of 2000 our drama Industry went into recession but despite the downfall we were still producing dramas. Then finally Industry got back on to its feet from 2009 when we started making some quality dramas especially under Humayun Saeed’s Production like Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishan and Doraha. Now many quality dramas are being produced and telecast by different Production houses making this Industry most Powerful Entertainment Industry.

However I was pondering that despite of making huge amount dramas nowadays there is still some charm missing that was used to be in our old dramas. It is a fact that we love old dramas because our childhood was attached to it but still there were so many things that makes our old dramas better than current ones. To prove it to some extent I decided to make an analysis which differs old dramas from current dramas. So have a look what was happening then and what is happening now.

So I have broken down my analysis into parts that are essential in every drama.

Episodes: For sure every drama means having episodes otherwise it will be called as telefilm. Number of episodes depend upon the story of drama and also on directors and producers for how long they wants to drag it. Now going back to our old dramas normally the dramas were 13-15 episodes long. Now coming back to our current ones and how much our directors and producers love to drag the drama to 25 episodes or more. Seriously through dragging they have spoilt lots of good dramas as the story gets out of focus. Obviously if drama got dragged for no reason then interest will be lost automatically.

Stories: Story generates interest, a drama with good story will obviously attracts people. Of course a good story depends upon the wisdom and intelligence of writers. Nowadays mostly stories are like Hey poor girl I am a rich boy with large business and villa but I love you and wants to marry you and poor girl oh I will think about it. Then after marriage a lottery for girl’s family and hatred by boy’s family and eventually conspiracies begin, through conspiracies girl and boy get separated but after knowing truth they are back together that’s it a happy ending as usual. We still got good writers now like Umera Ahmed so what’s missing? The actual thing which is missing is variety. Previously our dramas have all sort of stories tragedy, horror, comedy, action, romantic and stories focusing on different professions. Sadly now stories revolves around cheating spouses, love triangles, oppressed women, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law rivalry or sisters rivalry and stories full of blames and suspicions. Comedy is now very less to been seen I mean how many comedy dramas or sitcoms we produce in a year hardly 1 or 2. Action stories are now totally vanished and no is giving a thought towards action based dramas like we use to have previously for example Dhuwan, Alpha Bravo Charlie and Aahan. It is my sincere request to all writers to please come up with some different stories at least some more wittiest and hilarious stories.

Dialogues: I love you, I hate you, I cannot live without you, you are mine, I will die for you, will you marry me, what are you doing with other women, please come back don’t leave me, get out of my house, Talaaq, Talaaq,Talaaq! Oh don’t worry I was just writing popular dialogues that we use to have now. So again coming back to our writers and their way of writing, when every writers write for the television he/she includes expressive dialogues and the way these dialogues needs to be delivered depends on actors in order to seek more viewers’ attention. In our old dramas there was a habit among writers to include poetic and thought provoking dialogues and pure Urdu Language was used but now the dialogue and dialogue delivery seems to be flat however there are still some good dialogues especially in Umera Ahmed’s Stories. Another thing seems like our writers are now heavily influenced with English Language, English words and sentences are being used more especially when the stories are focused on rich families.

Simplicity: Showing large houses with a Mercedes car and a multi-millionaire business usually a factory seems to be in fashion in our dramas now. Even middle class families have furniture with large cupboards, luxurious and comfortable sofa set and an American style kitchen with a fine crockery. In every story every rich person is running a business mostly a factory and no one is a highly recognised doctor, accountant or engineer or graphics designer seriously only businessmen are rich and no one else being in other field. Looking at our previous dramas the trend to show rich families were less and if there is you can still see a simplicity with no expensive furniture at all.

Dressing Sense and make up: Nowadays actresses looks cool wearing a slim fit wrangely’s Jeans and a dolce and gabbana half sleeve T-shirt. What type of culture are we projecting seriously this is not our culture. If actresses are wearing shalwaar kameez then where the hell duppatta went. Instead of being fashionistas I guess there is a need to more focus on simple shalwar kameez and if they are showing rich families then at least wear long sleeve shirts on regular Jeans. In old dramas rich women were either wearing sarees or branded lawns for example 1993 drama “Marvi”. Now coming on make up 95% of country’s cosmetics you can now see on actresses’ face what a waste of country’s essential asset just to make actresses look skinny and white. Previously talent was considered instead of making actresses look attractive.

Hugging: Now giving a reference to Kanwal’s article we are for sure noticing much cosiness between actor and actresses. Hugging in every single drama was not a problem at all and now slowly drinking and dancing is also getting common current ON-AIR drama Bunty I love you is a great example of it. I wonder that a time will come soon when kissing will not be a problem at all. If this would have happened in old times literally people would protest and obviously dramas are family entertainment if we started to show too much boldness then it is better to switch to internet and watch alone.

Any more differences that you can find out or if you disagree with me then please have your say.

Dramas That Turned These Pakistani Celebrities Into Stars

So, we have a few stars who became the talk of the town with a single project while others had to work hard for years to reach the position they are in. What is interesting though is that many star kids are joining the industry in the past few years and there have been talks of nepotism as well but you can see, only talent will win hearts at the end of the day and not the sir names!

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

PEMRA recently laid out some rules for Pakistani dramas and we would like to share our thoughts about the issue. The orders issued by PEMRA require the drama makers to cut down on controversial themes and ensure that the dressing and the overall themes of the dramas should be in line with the ‘socio-cultural’ norms of the country.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

As is mentioned in the order, PEMRA issued this press release after getting complaints from the viewers who we must remember are the ones who watch these dramas and make them ‘hits’! The press release itself is quite ambiguous and appears to be a mixed-up summary of everything that the complainants had to say about Pakistani dramas. Basically, if we look at everything PEMRA wants to put an end to, apart from a couple of dramas, all the other Pakistani dramas should be banned! Since that is never going to happen and no one really listens to what PEMRA has to say any way, we feel that it is important to make a list of all such dramas which should have been banned. There have been some dramas in the past which either crossed a certain line, were too bold, mishandled a sensitive subject or showed unnecessary evil, which most certainly serve as an example of dramas which should have been banned right away.

Here is a list of Pakistani dramas which in our opinion should have been banned right away for reasons stated below.

Nanhi

Nanhi was one such bold drama which did not serve a bigger purpose. Showing the negative side of the society in the most detailed manner just for the sake of ‘entertainment’ is the number one reason why this drama should have been banned. The solution which was presented in the end was more shocking than anything else that happened in the drama. Nanhi was not just terribly depressing but also ill-conceived.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Chup Raho

Chup Raho was another drama which commercialized a sensitive topic and as a result the message was completely lost. Showing a problematic situation repeatedly and giving the villain more screen time to get ratings were few of the reasons why this drama failed to do justice to the topic it was supposed to highlight. Scenes which were in bad taste and disturbing situations which were more forced than convincing made this drama a complete disaster. It also set a bad precedent which was followed by many other drama makers.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Beqasoor

Beqasoor banked heavily on the miserable situation of its main female leads. This misery did not end right till the very end. In the last few minutes, the viewers were shown a happy ending. While it is true that women suffer a great deal in our society, showing women who suffer in silence and keep on going back to men who do not value or respect them and portraying such women as heroines is highly objectionable.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Rishte Kuch Adhoorey Se

Rishter Kuch Adhoorey Se showed how a ‘misunderstanding’ results in a really twisted situation in which the bride’s sister ends up entering into a nikkah with the man she was supposed to marry but since this is kept ‘hidden’, the sister who had not entered into a nikkah ends up going home with the groom at the time of rukhsati. The mother knew everything yet she did not stop the rukhsati from happening. This drama was twisted in more ways than one.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Pakeeza

Drama serial Pakeeza showed the suffering of a talented woman who was always underappreciated and even physically abused by her husband. She continued living with her husband even after he divorced her. This was yet another Pakistani drama which showed the sufferings of a married woman and the tragedy was never-ending. It also had a controversial plot which was used to get ratings.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Balaa

Recently ended drama serial Balaa got a lot of attention but for all the wrong reasons. It only had negativity, family politics, planning, plotting, drinking and deaths to offer. Dramas like Balaa serve no purpose and are not only made but dragged as well to generate ratings because the shortcut to getting TRP’s is showing all things evil. Balaa’s story was about a psychopath but not even once it was suggested that she could get some medical help. Such dramas should be banned and those who produce and write this kind of content should be heavily fined.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Sangat

In drama serial Sangat they tried their very best to turn villain into a hero by showing that he was feeling guilty for what he did so he wanted to redeem himself by becoming a saviour. It was unfortunate that the female lead who got violated also started relying on him and unfortunately there was a child involved too. The attachment of everyone with the villain made the scenarios off-putting & uncomfortable but the drama-makers relied on such situation to grab the attention of the viewers.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Ek Tamanna Lahasil Si

In drama serial Ek Tamanna Lahasil Si, they showed each and every kind of zulm that a mother in law could put her daughter in law through and after prolonged misery, they tried to give a happy ending which didn’t make an impact because most of the drama was based on the negativity that the purpose seemed lost.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Ghairat

In drama serial Ghairat, a brother sets his sister on fire in the name of honour and everyone around him stays quiet which further facilitates him making him feel empowered and entitled that he can rule or ruin anyone’s life just like that. The key factors of Ghairat were forced negativity and helplessness of females which was pushed to the limit with a little love story brewing on the side.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Gul-e-Rana

Gul-e-Rana was supposed to be a love story but it went terribly wrong. This drama showed a forced nikkah on gunpoint and marital rape like it was something normal. There wasn’t a single instance when both these things were addressed like they were serious issues in the dramas. In fact they were used as a means to take the plot forward. This drama should have been banned the second the so-called hero raped the girl he forced into a nikkah by sedating her.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Janam

Janam was creepy and sickening in more ways than one. It had many pointless romantic scenes which were in bad taste. It also showed how a father persuades his daughter to flirt with his best friend. Everything about this drama was in bad taste.

Dramas That Should Have Been Banned Straight Away

Can you think of any other dramas which should have been banned right away? Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments section.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Year 2016 was full of surprises because the Pakistani Drama buffs were in for a treat as a few drama makers decided to break free from the monotony of rating-chipping tactics and decided to give viewers some beautifully unforgettable dramas that had nothing to do with clichés. Where in the previous years, viewers were rolling their eyeballs hard over the same stories wrapped in a new packaging repeatedly, which more or less revolved around damsels in distress or marital problems, year 2016 came as a breath of fresh air because the viewers all of a sudden got a variety of the subjects that our drama-makers decided to explore. Some dramas were educational and some were just plain love stories done extremely well that they blew the viewers away.

Pakistani dramas have always held a special place in viewers hearts all around the globe because they have been a source of family entertainment. Sadly, for quite a few years our industry saw a dip in the quality of the dramas that were being produced and aired because it looked like every other drama-maker was making dramas for the commercial reasons and didn’t really care about the family entertainment for which our viewers tuned to dramas in the first place. Year 2016 brought a drastic change with it because all the blockbuster dramas sealed the deal that the viewers were done with the done-to-death stories. By making unique and different dramas popular, Pakistani drama audience showed that in they were done with dukhyari dukhtar dairies, they were done with the stories filled with clichés and most importantly they were done with the dramas which only showcased extra marital affairs, dysfunctional marriages and family politics. This is the reason why some of the over-hyped and star-studded plays didn’t really get a positive feedback from the viewers whereas in their comparison, those dramas which had unconventional themes and narratives did really well.

It is about time that the drama-makers come out of their fixation with such commercial sort of dramas that they make only with the intention of grabbing the ratings because the Pakistani drama viewers are intelligent and they proved it by welcoming the changes that some of the drama-makers made last year. 2016 surely was a great year for the drama buffs as it restored the faith people had in Pakistani dramas because a few drama-makers showed that they still cared and still took pride in their work. 2016 can safely be labeled as the year that changed the trend drastically and broke the monotony which is why now when we have transitioned into 2017, we are seeing some different dramas already. Let’s revisit all those beautiful dramas that we fell in love with last year and let’s discuss those dramas that all the drama-makers should learn lessons from:

Besharam

Besharam was probably the first drama after so many years which showed a perfect and healthy marital relationship that the two strong individuals shared. Both Mishi and Haider came from completely different backgrounds, where Mishi was a model and Haider was a politician – both headstrong and independent people who got married on a whim made the viewers fell in love with their love story. The writer of Besharam Sarwat Nazeer seemed to be on a challenge where she wanted to show how normal marriages work, where both a husband and a wife come together to solve their issues by communicating with each other. Mishi and Haider did everything that normal couples do, where they would talk their problems out, they would share a cup of coffee, surprise each other, give space to each other, understand and respect each other as well.

Since viewers were so used to clichés, when everything between Mishi and Haider seemed to be sailing smoothly, everyone expected a U-turn or a very drastic accident because the viewers couldn’t really grasp the fact that things could be this ‘normal’, ‘conventional’ and ‘amazing’ in a Pakistani drama of this day and age. Saba Qamar and Zahid Ahmed’s phenomenal chemistry made Mishi and Haider’s couple even more special.

Besharam came with a lot of beautiful lessons which never seemed preachy or boring but always had a meaning that actually stirred the emotions in the right direction. It was beautiful seeing such a head strong woman walking an extra mile to make her marriage work by pleasing her husband and respecting her in-laws. Similarly, it was quite refreshing to see a husband resolving his wife’s family issues too. Besharam surely is one such drama that our drama-makers should pay heed to and take notes from, especially because it showed how normal marriages work in most of the circumstances and how these sort of stories can resonate well with viewers too. Besharam’s popularity actually sealed the deal that the viewers know how to welcome stories that have nothing to do with dysfunctional marriages and they can actually watch and enjoy simple love/marriage stories with a smile on their face as well.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Dillagi

Dillagi was a love story which did not only have an unconventional leading lady but it also had a hero who was like no other. Unlike many other love stories, this one was not about the zalim samaj or gherulu zindagi ke masail but it showed how a woman who wants to take revenge will do anything to make the man who bruised her ego suffer. Dillagi was a trendsetter which showed that love stories don’t always have to be typical. Anmol’s character, her reasons for getting married to Mohid, ways in which she tried to make him miserable, the progression of this track from hatred to love and most importantly the message in the end that she was still just as adventures and bold as she was before are few reasons why Dillagi was anything but run-of-the-mill.

Pakistani drama viewers have seen innumerable heroes who fell in love with a seedhi sadhi larki (because she is the ideal candidate for the job!) and fought hard for getting married to her but Mohid is probably the only hero in the history of Pakistani dramas who fell in love with a girl because she was anything but seedhi sadhi. Most importantly, he loved this woman right till the end even with all her flaws. The iconic dialogue Mohabbat andhi nahi faragh dil hoti hai, aaib dekhti hai magar nazar andaz kar deti hai!” summed up why Mohid was so willing to not only ignore but even accept everything wrong which Anmol ever did. This wasn’t the only cliché which Dillagi questioned and gave a brand new connotation of. Apart from this, the age-old saying “everything is fair in love and war” was also questioned by the writer in such a way that anyone who has watched Dillagi will always remember that particular conversation between Mohid and Anmol.

Drama serial Dillagi also had some extremely poignant, deep and meaningful dialogues to its credit which stayed with the viewers long after they were done watching the play. Mehwish Hayat and Humayun Saeed’s on screen chemistry and captivating performances made their characters and this love story magical, novel and unforgettable.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Mein Sitara

Mein Sitara showed the real face of the world of glitz and glam. It highlighted the pain and suffering in the life of a film star by showing how misleading public images can be. It showed what a big price some people have to pay for continuing to survive in the world without giving up. Mein Sitara was extraordinary in more ways than one. There are hardly any dramas which have delved so deep into the life of their leading characters the way Mein Sitara did and it did so without getting stagnant or repetitive. The story started when Sitara was a 10 year old girl and it ended when Sitara’s daughter grew up to be a director and it was engrossing right till the end.

The most notable aspect of this drama was that every phase of Sitara’s life was elaborated in a convincing and engaging manner. Her personality traits, her strengths and weaknesses and most importantly her unwillingness to give up turned out to be one of the most endearing aspects of this drama. Sitara was a leading lady like no other; she had been used, misunderstood and even abandoned but every time she came out even more strong, ready to take up her next challenge.

The best part of this drama was that no matter how slow the pace of the story got it always managed to transport the viewers to another world; Sitara’s world! Mein Sitara had some remarkable performances to its credit. It was a complete package and a trendsetter. All those writers out there who are scared of experimenting and look for shortcuts should take inspiration from Mein Sitara. It can also be a source of motivation for all those directors and producers who want to stick to the same old formulas because they are afraid to experiment.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Preet Na Kariyo Koi

Preet Na Kariyo Koi was one such drama that had a plethora of emotions, there was love, there was revenge, there was betrayal, jealousy, possessiveness, helplessness, devotion, dedication, deceit, denial, fearlessness and regret. Preet Na Kariyo Koi was one such drama that dealt with all these emotions in such a convincing manner and the writer Amna Mufti made sure to convey all of that through the characters brilliantly. Preet Na Kariyo Koi was a story about Goshi, a grey character which you could hate but feel for at the same time because her psychology was elaborated clearly and realistically. Understanding a grey character like Goshi was no easy feat but the writer made sure to show her entire journey in such a manner where everything that she did ended up having a justification by the end of the episode which helped the viewers a great deal. Even though Goshi was the central figure of the drama but the rest of the story was supported by such beautiful characters too which filled your heart with warmth and made you connect to them too.

Preet Na Kariyo Koi showed a fearless young girl who could go to any extreme for the sake of the man she loved, where she could hurt her father and her mother-like aunt too but later she realized the importance of her family despite living in the denial for years and years and despite failing at almost everything at a certain point in her life. It was a complete journey that Goshi lived through and a transition that she showed which was tackled with so much of maturity by the director. The writer took a risk by showing a girl like Goshi because chances were that her character wouldn’t sit well with the viewers but the way viewers reacted to it showed that they were ready to see unconventional leading ladies on screen too. This was Hira Mani’s first project as the protagonist and she showcased her talent as an actress brilliantly.

This drama dealt with the aspect of regional politics, power and authority that comes with it yet how they can end up becoming shackles for someone. This drama had so much going for it where the crux of the story was all about Goshi’s struggles, but the overall treatment was so refreshing as they brought the essence of interiors of Lahore to life. Drama makers surely can learn from Preet Na Kariyo Koi how and where to stop, like if they want to show things that can be a bit too heavy and unconventional for the viewers, there’s always a way for it. Preet Na Kariyo Koi surely was an intelligent piece of writing directed intelligently as well that is why people stayed glued to their screens and actually looked forward to it.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Sang e Marmar

This show blew all the viewers away and it is still fresh in everyone’s memory. When Sang e Marmar began, no one actually knew that they were in for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and if there’s one word that actually describes Sang e Marmar the best, it is unpredictable. Sang e Marmar’s story was set in the small town of KPK, highlighting Pukhtoon culture and its weaknesses in such a convincing manner that those who belonged to the region ended up testifying in the favor of everything that was being shown without getting offended. The reason behind the realism in the story of this drama was the fact that the writer Mustafa Afridi himself hailed from KPK and that is why, he knew what he was showcasing in this story.

Sang e Marmar was all about revenge, ego, misunderstandings and then redemption. While watching Sang e Marmar, the viewers felt that they watched this entire journey and grew with the characters to this extent that they started understanding them and their perspective effortlessly. The best part about this drama was that the villain Torah Khan was never considered to be the villain until he started crossing the line because the writer presented him in such a way that his story actually stirred sympathy for him as he was deeply hurt by another villain Torah Khan. It was probably after a long long time that the drama covering tribal animosity and family politics did so well with the viewers because it was a presented with such uniqueness.

Sang e Marmar has to be the first such drama in Pakistani history that spoke against the concept of Riba and showcased its cons in such a manner that it did compel the viewers to think about this subject. It showcased how Riba literally ruined generations of one family and how those involved in it ended up losing everything, their family, their pride, their respect, everything. Another beautiful aspect of Sang e Marmar was that despite living in such an environment where women hardly had any rights, all the female characters in this drama were headstrong and believed in making their own decisions, be it Shameem, be it Bano, Shireen, Pari, Durkhane, Gulalai or even Palwasha, all of them had something or the other going for them without having much authority or control over their lives.

Sang e Marmar surely was a breath of fresh air even though its story was quite heavy and the situations were quite heart-wrenching. This is one such drama that definitely can teach drama-makers a lot of things especially a thing or two about the fact that how without sensationalizing any subject, they can just stick to the point and convey the story in such a convincing manner. Sang e Marmar’s cast, direction and writing turned it into a blockbuster and not to be missed, the situational comedy that kept things light hearted and the amazing, deep and meaningful dialogues that acted as a cherry on top.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Tum Yaad Aye

Tum Yaad Aye was a classic family drama which reminded many of the viewers of the golden era of PTV dramas when relationships in general were mostly explored by the writers and a love story was usually a side track. It was the story of a family which went through good times and bad ones and later on it showed how these changes effected their lives and personalities. Zaini’s character was another reason why drama makers should learn lesson from this drama because most of the writers are bent on showing perfect heroines who can do no wrong. Zaini made some terrible decisions in her life but in the end she proved that if you have a solid upbringing then you eventually achieve your goals and learn from your mistakes. The focus on a girl’s career and education was another refreshing aspect of this drama especially because it was done in a brilliant manner.

The highlight of this drama was its unconventional yet appealing characters which were beautifully etched-out. Another reason why this drama was different from the rest was that the writer covered all aspects of the story thoroughly without banking on shortcuts. The overall treatment given to the play was also impressive, it did not have any over-dramatic twists and turns but had plenty of quality content to keep the viewers hooked to their television screens.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

Udaari

Udaari was an exceptional play which had some groundbreaking developments to its credit. This was not the first time that a Pakistani writer had written a story revolving around child abuse and rape but it was definitely the first time that a rapist was taken to court and the victim herself testified against him even though she did not have the support of her mother. This drama showed that rapists deserved to be punished for their crime and that raping someone was not a ‘mistake’ but a criminal offense, an idea which is very basic but is completely missing from those dramas which deal with the issue.

Udaari was also extraordinary because it showed that a victim with her own will and inner strength can turn herself into a survivor. The idea that it wasn’t the victim who needed to feel ashamed because of what happened to her was also an important aspect of this drama. Everything changed the moment Zebu started believing that she was a survivor and not a victim, Imtiaz’s confidence was completely shaken when he saw the self-belief with which Zebu confronted him and it also turned the legal case around.

This wasn’t the only powerful message which Udaari put forward, it also showed how people who had resources can help people who are not that fortunate, achieve their goals. None of these women would have achieved so much if they did not have the moral and practical support of their educated and well-off friends. Sheedan’s character was also very inspirational, for a change the viewers saw a woman who did not need a man to look out for her and who stood by all the women associated with her whether it was her daughter, her neighbor or her neighbor’s daughter.

Udaari was truly inspiring, it was filled with positive messages, it was thoroughly entertaining and most importantly it has quite a few phenomenal performances which gave a new identity to some very famous actors. Ahsan Khan and Bushra Ansari in particular did exceptionally well in their respective roles.

Dramas That Drama-makers Should Learn Lessons From!

So, these are the dramas that we believe set the bar high and came as breath of fresh air because of their unconventional narratives and characters. These dramas had so much newness to offer that the viewers loved the change and felt that the makers of these dramas restored their faith in Pakistani drama industry. Please share your thoughts about these dramas and feel free to speak about more such dramas that according to you can give a lesson or two to our drama-makers?

DRAMAS TAUGHT US TO MARRY YOUR COUSINS!

0

I finally decided to write about this topic as I am still noticing that our dramas usually revolves around cousins’ love and marital affairs. Our drama makers love to show affairs between cousins while in reality cousins are like brother and sisters, so I don’t know what prompts them to suggest that cousins are usually indulged into each other.

Marriage is indeed a beautiful phase of life as everyone wants to have a life partner who can be with you in all stages of life. Some people do Love Marriages and some people do Arrange Marriages. All I can see in dramas that you prefer to do both love and arrange marriages with your cousins. I understand that cousins do marry with each other because of the so called reason of “Dekha Bhaala larka/ larki” but according to our dramas it seems like everyone is interested in marrying with their cousins.

So have a look on list of dramas that revolves around cousins marriages:

Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishan:

Let’s start with a drama MZZB, Arfeen love Saba his paternal cousin and decided to marry her. Adil, saba’s another paternal cousin had also shown interest in Saba. Arfeen’s mother succeeded to apart Arfeen from Saba by setting a trap to prove that Adil and Saba were involved in illicit behaviour. This drama was a perfect story of cousins’ tragic love story. Result= cousins marriage failed.

MZZB

Humsafar:

This drama is the best example of cousins’ love and martial affairs. Let’s see how strings are attached, Khizer, Sara’s Paternal cousin love Sara, Sara madly love Asher her maternal cousin, Asher love Khirad his wife and Paternal cousin. Sara with help of Khizer succeeded to apart Asher and Khirad but fate re unites them. In the end one cousin Sara died after not getting Asher as her life partner. Result= Cousins marriage half succeeded half failed.

Humsafar

Kankar:

This drama was although based on domestic abuse on women but in the end everyone was happy after getting married with their respective cousins. Arzoo love Sikander her maternal cousin but Sikander wants to marry Kiran. Kiran’s paternal cousin Adnan wants to marry Kiran as well. In the end Kiran got remarried with Adnan after getting divorce from Sikander, as he used to beat her and Sikandar got remarried with Arzoo and all cousins live happily ever after. Result= All cousins are successful.

kankar

Dil-e-Muzter:

Yet another successful drama of Hum-TV but again the story revolves around cousin marital affair. Sila love Adeel her paternal cousin and they both got married. Although Adeel treated Sila badly but in the end when Adeel ask forgiveness she forgave her cousin and decided to move on with him leaving Ahmer friend zoned. Result= Cousins’ marriage successful.

dil e muzter

Marasim:

This drama was indeed a masterpiece in terms of story line and direction however it is another fine example of Cousins’ love affair. Dawood and Deeba were engaged to their paternal cousins Momenah and Abdullah from childhood. Dawood and Momenah love each other madly, Deeba also love Abdullah but Abdullah was not at all interested in Deeba. In the end Deeba was finally married to Abdullah and Momenah got married with Fahad her maternal cousin. The interesting and funny fact of this drama was that both Zaid and Dawood died as they were unable to marry their respective cousins. Result= Cousins marriage successful and those who are unsuccessful died.

Marasim

Daam:

This was yet another gem by Umera Ahmed but as usual story revolves around cousins. Junaid love Zara, Maliha’s best friend, Maliha love her paternal cousin Yasir. Fiza, Yasir’s sister got some real psychological problems and she always show her jealousy towards Zara and she succeeded to snatch Junaid from her. Not all dramas have happy endings, this drama got finished with some real grim faces as all cousins got nothing but separation. Fiza Jealousy and Maliha’s selfishness indeed destroyed everyone’s life. Result= Cousin’s marriage unsuccessful.

daam

Ru Baru:

A drama that was self-destroyed by the writer, I mean this could be among great dramas of 2014 but writer got some another plan. Although the main characters were sarmad and shabeeh but most of the drama was focused on Kiran and Tipu who were both maternal and paternal cousins. Tipu at first divorced Kiran as she always blamed Tipu for having extra marital affairs but when Tipu’s mother insisted him to marry her again he agreed. This drama was ended on a very absurd note leaving many questions unanswered. Result= Cousins’ marriage successful.

ru baru

Ahista Ahista:

The Lameness of this drama cannot be defined in a single word. I just want to say that huge money had been spent on Production Quality but the story is actually unbearable. Anyways Zawar is a lucky man as he is enjoying his life with an Indian and a Pakistani wife and yes the Pakistani wife is as usual his cousin. Its fine to show  Zawar’s second wife as his cousin but casting Mawra against Adnan Siddiqui I mean are you serious? Result=  Cousins’ Marriage Successful.

ahista ahista

Jab We Wed:

Another perfect example of cousins’ love affair, this drama is currently on-air on Urdu 1. Nisa love Faris madly, her Paternal cousin but Faris needs to fulfil his mother’s last wish that Faris should marry with one maternal cousin out of three cousins. When Faris told Nisa about her mother’s wish she was heart-broken. Farish wants Nisa to help him to suggest which cousin will be suitable for her, Nisa was although not willing to help him at start but finally she agreed. Result= although the drama is still On-Air but the result is successful as per the story line we all know that Faris will eventually marry Nisa.

Jab_We_Wed

Rung:

I know most of you are not watching this drama, it is currently On-Air on Hum Sitaray. I found this play much better than most of the HUM-TV plays currently On-Air. So Saniya and Zafar are cousins and best childhood friends. Saniya grows up to be an over ambitious woman as a doctor who wants to be on top and everything should be perfect in her life. She prefers her work and ambition over her family, while Zafar prefers family and simple life. On Saniya’s mother last wish Saniya got married with Zafar but it was like a forceful marriage as Saniya never finds Zafar as a compatible companion. Saniya is so workaholic that she neglected her children while Zafar cared for his family. Result= Not applicable until drama ends but it seems like Saniya might leave Zafar or she may realise in the end that she is actually losing her beautiful family.

Rung hum sitaray drama ost

So any other drama in your mind which is based on Cousins’ marital or love affair? P.S: Please no debate on cousins’ marriages.

0

First of all we would like to thank everyone who participated in the voting and shared their opinions regarding the awards on the website. The voting closed a few days ago and it is time for us to discuss the results. Please feel free to share your opinion because your feedback is highly valuable. These results are based on the votes that were given to the dramas/writers/actors and directors in different categories by the public. It came as no surprise that the play Hamsafar got most votes in all the categories and this is exactly the reason why we will be mentioning the dramas that came in second position too. Here are the results.

Best Drama 2012:

First Place: Hamsafar (Hamsafar got 2,070 votes)
Second Place: Durr-e-Shehwar (Durr-e-Shehwar got 504 votes)

Total Votes cast: 3,490

There is huge difference between the number of votes that these two dramas got, the sweeping majority that Hamsafar got came as no surprise. Hamsafar got 59 percent of the total votes cast and Durr-e-Shehwar got 14 percent of the total votes cast. Durr-e-Shehwar was in competition with amazing plays like Shehr-e-Zaat and Bilquess Kaur which were very famous as well but people voted in the favor of Durr-e-Shehwar.

Best Actor In A Leading Role:

First Place: Fawad Khan for Hamsafar (Fawad Khan got 2,724 votes)
Second Place: Faisal Qureshi for Jahez (Faisal Qureshi got 179 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,393

This really is amazing, Fawad Khan who has not been around for as long as the rest of the actors who were nominated for this category won with a very big margin. Fawad Khan won by getting 80 percent of the total votes cast and Faisal Qureshi got 5 percent. Mikaal Zulfiqar got 172 votes.

Best Actress In A Leading Role:

First Place: Mahira Khan for Hamsafar (Mahira Khan got 1,540 votes)
Second Place: Sanam Baloch for Durr-e-Shehwar (Sanam Baloch got 773 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3, 405

Mahira Khan got 45 percent of the total votes cast and Sanam Baloch got 22 percent. The outstanding performance by Bushra Ansari in Bilquees Kaur did not get as many votes as one would have expected it to get.

Best Supporting Actor 2012:

First Place: Mohib Mirza for Shehr-e-Zaat (Mohib Mirza got 1,533 votes)
Second Place: Syed Mohammad Ahmed for Durr-e-Shehwar (Syed Mohammad Ahmed got 752 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,036

There were no nominations from the play Hamsafar in this category. Mohib Mirza won by getting 50 percent of the total votes cast and Syed Mohammad Ahmed bagged the second position by getting 25 percent of the total votes cast.

Best Supporting Actress 2012:

First Place: Naveen Waqar for Hamsafar (Naveen Waqar got 1,361 votes)
Second Place: Samina Peerzada for Shehr e Zaat (Samina Peerzada got 1,262 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,200

This was a very close competition; there isn’t much of a difference in the number of votes that the two actresses got. Naveen Waqar won the award by getting 43 percent of the total votes cast and Samina Peerzada bagged the second place by getting 39 percent of the total votes cast.

Best Dialogues 2012:

First Place: Farhat Ishtiaq for Hamsafar (Farhat ishtiaq got 1,180 votes)
Second Place: Umera Ahmed for Shehr-e-Zaat ( Umera Ahmed got 939 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,145

Umera Ahmed was nominated for Shehr-e-Zaat and Durr-e-Shehwar both and when one adds the results of both the plays together, she got more votes than Farhat Ishtiaq but the competition was between individual plays so we will count the votes that the plays got individually. Farhat Ishtiaq got 38 percent of the total votes cast and Umera Ahmed got 30 percent of the total votes cast. This was a very close competition.

Best Director 2012:

First Place: Sarmad Khoosat for Hamsafar (Sarmad Khoosat got 2,115 votes)
Second Place: Sarmad Khoosat for Shehr-e-Zaat (Sarmad Khoosat got 354 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,045

Sarmad Khoosat got majority of the votes for both his dramas but there is a big difference between the number of votes that the two got. He got 69 percent of the total votes cast for Hamsafar and 12 percent for Shehr-e-Zaat.

Best On-Screen Couple 2012:

First Place: Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan for Hamsafar (They got 2,703 votes)
Second Place: Sanam Baloch and Meekal Zulfiqar for Durr-e-Shehwar (They got 182 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,174

It seems like there was no competition there!! Mahira and Fawad won by getting 85 percent of the total votes cast and Sanam and Meekal got only 6 percent.

Best OST 2012:

First Place: Who Hamsafar Tha (Hamsafar’s OST got 2,236 votes)
Second Place: Yaar Ko Humne (SeZ’s OST got 582 votes)

Total Votes Cast: 3,247

The OST of hamsafar won by getting 60 percent of the total votes cast and the OST of Shehr-e-Zaat got second place by getting 18 percent of the total votes cast.

These results clearly suggest that in people’s opinion Hamsafar was the most loved play in all respects in 2012 and Shehr-e-Zaat is the only play which had a real competition with Hamsafar.

Dramas I Regret Watching!

0

Ohkay, yes we all have had our fair share of bad dramas that we ended up watching thinking the story might improve or we will have something to keep with us by the end but sadly we were mistaken. The story went out of the way & even beat the word of unpredictability. I like to watch dramas that are safe & at times predictable but not those which end up becoming a regret wasting the time upon.

So, the list dedicated to such masterpieces is as belows:

Mastana Mahi:

I actually failed to understand what was so ‘mastana’ about the ‘mahi’ in this drama. It started off as a story of two friends taking different paths in their lives but the story had absolutely nothing to offer once it progressed. Mehreen Raheel acted her bit well because it was a role we have seen her playing again & again, of a little pooh girl who likes things her way. She ends up marrying a man double her age & then after having issues she walks out of that marriage. What I actually disliked & never understood was the part where Fahad Mustafa gets himself checked in a motel in South Africa & he comes across a girl who does illegal things to make a living. The character was played by Deepti Gupta & we all have seen what a phenomenal actress she is but it was a farce seeing her wasted in such a role plus it just didn’t make sense. Sajjal Ali was beautiful as Suhai in that role but then the story took a turn & moved to politics of the town. Who would’ve thought that a story which probably started off abroad would end up in a town of Sindh where in the end three ladies on the phone will threaten a goon & they will get the man of their family back. What a waste of time I must say!

Zard Mausam:

The story was about a young girl putting her parents through hell. But I think it wasn’t only confined to her parents who she put through hell, it went on to her siblings, then to her husband & then eventually her unborn child. I think the writer had nothing to tell us & it was more like a drama where the ideas were inflicted at a random thought. No bases, no grounds for anything & the story was just bad with an equally bad execution. I actually by the end of the drama thought why did I do this to myself & wasted a whole lot of weeks on such a bad story? Yes, I did expect that may be Ayeza Khan will earn some brains but the way she kept on moving in her life was totally unrealistic. I, till this date do not get the purpose of the drama & nor do I wish to find out.

Mere Dard Ko Jo Zuban Mile:

What was that drama all about? Miseries of the whole world rolled into one family? I was gutted to see it go down the drain because when I tuned into this drama I thought we got a very nice family drama based on a strong friendship, no doubt all the characters were amazing & the best role was played by Sheheryaar Munawwar of a guy who had a few limitations but I absolutely felt for the character because the approach was different & he wasn’t made to look pitiful in the start but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. He later went on losing one limb after another & nothing in the story made sense. Alishba Yousaf was great in the drama & definitely the only saving grace but sadly she couldn’t pull off such a weak script single handedly because the miseries made all the the other characters vulnerable.

Ek Tamanna La Hasil Si:

Yes, the story & sense was ‘lahasil’ in this drama & I couldn’t ‘hasil’ anything from it. I know it was based on the real life stories where the daughters in law get tortured by their husband’s family but the level of torture & then the accusations were enough of a tick off. I remember leaving reviewing it the midway because I was running out of decent words to speak about the story myself. It had everything from drinking to extramarital affairs to infidelity accusation & in the end a protagonist losing her mind. It would’ve been better if a little less miseries were thrown our way but sorry it was a bad bad drama.

Silvatein:

Never thought that this drama would ever made to my regret-watching list because it started off great & all the characters were realistic but the note it ended on was absolutely ridiculous. Yes, it was just another one of those sister rivalry based stories but I thought the drama had more to offer than just that & yes, it did offer a lot more but in all the negative aspects. A sister getting involved in the black magic against her eldest sister just to get a few pennies of the property, boy I was mistaken to be taking them as literate & sophisticated people. Amina Sheikh tried hard to make a mark but failed miserably. All she had was to pull off a painful face & take all the blame on her, I was bored to death by watching her act all miserable. The drama was a big flop for me at least.

Kadurat:

Despite the production value & a great cast & even the appearance of Deepak Parwani after years & years, this drama was an absolute rubbish. Not that we all are aware of the point where it lead to but the characters were bad. Sanam Saeed tried to act the character of Mina with the best of her ability but sadly she on her own was enough to spoil the whole drama. Yes, we all do like to watch some thrillers & dramas with a tint of negativity but this was capable of spoiling your taste for a whole week. Extremely sad that this drama was what I thought would be different but in the end made me feel I wasted my time upon. I sincerely hope that the writer got a good feedback of this drama & we won’t be seeing her using the imagination in such a way again.

Kabhi Kabhi:

Yes, this drama is on-air right now & I am already regretting watching this. I am not sure why such a good cast opt for such weak scripts making us fall for the trap. The only reason why I tuned into this drama was because of Ahsan/Mehwish Khan’s pairing because they both have a great on-screen chemistry. The drama began with a great characterization making us feel that it had something different to offer. So sad it wasn’t supposed to be & we all know where the story is heading to. I hope it ends ASAP & the Friday night prime time slot is filled with something to look forward to, not something that we dread tuning into.

So, this is what my list comprises of. I know people would expect me to add Mujhe Khuda Pe Yakeen Hai in this list but the truth is as much as I disliked the drama I enjoyed reviewing & then reading the comments of all the people who agreed & felt exactly the same as me about the show. So, yes for that I thank the makers of Mujhe Khuda Pe Yakeen Hai for providing us with a weekly entertainment that we all would laugh ours head off at. Please feel free to share the dramas you regretted watching.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Dramas based on foreign novels

0
Nowadays almost every other drama is based on a novel or short story mostly written by a female fiction writer. Adapting novels for films and dramas is a popular trend worldwide, being the first television channel definitely state run Pakistan Television is the pioneer in Pakistan when it comes to adapting novels for dramas. PTV produced many dramas based on Urdu and regional (Punjabi, Sindhi) novels which I had already covered in a series of articles. Following on the trend of PTV, now novel based drama is a routine.
But PTV clearly carries another distinction in this aspect which is adapting foreign language novels for dramas. Adapting a foreign novel requires a lot of effort as it requires localization of main character and situation of novel. The main theme remains the same, but the character and environment of novel is customized as per the local  taste and censor requirements.
Since 1970’s PTV produced few dramas based on novels, which received mixed response. Interestingly most of such dramas by PTV have Rahat Kazmi in the cast. Speaking of contemporary drama making, only Hum Tv has adapted few foreign novels as dramas though they never mentioned the name of the novel.
This article is a compilation of drama serials of PTV and Hum Tv which were based on foreign novels.
Qurbatain aur Faaslay
Qurbatain aur Faaslay aired in 1974 was based on Russian novel ‘Fathers and sons,’ by Ivan Turgenev. Starring Rahat Kazmi and Sahira Kazmi, the play was very popular when aired from PTV Rawalpindi centre. It was a black and white play and perhaps its recording is no more available. The play provided nationwide recognition to both Rahat and Sahira.
Parchayian
Parchayian in late 1970’s is another play from PTV Rawalpindi centre based on English novel ‘Portrait of a Lady’ by Henry James. Haseena Moin dramatized the novel whereas Rahat Kazmi, Sahira Kazmi, Talat Hussain, Shakeel and Javaid Sheikh were in prominent roles. The play was successful and it is available online as well.
Pch
Teesra Kinara
Teesra Kinara in late 1970’s is another play from PTV Lahore center based on Russian-American novelist Ayn Rand’s novel ‘Fountainhead’ . Starring Rahat Kazmi, Usman Peerzada, Sahira Kazmi, Badi-uzZaman, Saba Hameed, it was dramatized by Rahat Kazmi himself. Teesra Kinara is also remembered for its theme song Kabhi Hum Khoobsorat Thay in the voice of Nayyara Noor
TK
Ehsaas
Ehsaas in mid 1980’s is another play from PTV Karachi center. It was a mini serial of six episodes starring Rahat Kazmi, Durr-e-Shehwar Raheem, Marina Khan, Khalid Anum, Sabiha Khanum and Hameed Wyne. Dramatized by Shahid Kazmi it was directed by Shazad Khalil. Ehsaas was based on English novel ‘Misunderstood’ by Florence Montgomery
Ehsaas
Ehsaas, PTV Play
After gradual decline of PTV in from mid 90’s onwards, Hum TV is definitely a spearhead in drama making which revived the tradition of Pakistani drama. Through its back to back strong productions, Hum TV pulled the audience attention back towards Pakistani dramas which restored the faith of television viewers in Pakistani productions. Few of Hum TV dramas were based on foreign novels though they never mentioned the name of the novel in the credits.
The Ghost
The Ghost in 2008/2009 on Hum TV was an adaptation from a foreign novel. For television it was dramatized by Umera Ahmed and directed by Babar Javed starring Faisal Qureshi, Samina Peerzada, Savera Nadeem, Nadia Jameel, Sania Saeed, Rehan Sheikh and Ismael Bashi. The credits of drama clearly say it is an adaptation, but the name of the novel was not mentioned in the credits. Despite a huge cast, and big names as director and writer Ghost was not much popular.
the ghost
Khamoshiyan
KhamoshiyaaN in 2010 was also an adaptation and it was mentioned in the credits of the drama though the name of adapted novel was missing in the credits. Directed by Babar Javed and written by Samira Fazal the play starred Nauman Ejaz, Sania Saeed, Faisal Rehman, Ayesha Khan, Vaneza Ahmed and Sana Khan in main roles. Khamoshiyan was a successful play.
KMS
khamos
Mera Naseeb
Mera Naseeb in 2011 was a successful play of Hum Tv written by Sameera Fazal. Again the credits say ‘A part of the story is an adaptation’ but the name of adapted story or novel was missing in the credits. Starring Sanam Saeed, Syra Yousaf, Adeel Hussain, Bushra Ansari, Rubina Ashraf, Samina Peerzada, Imran Abbas, Imran Aslam, Sajid Hassan, Mera Naseeb enjoyed great success with audience as well as critics. It also won the best drama award Lux Style Award. Though the drama makers never mentioned about adapted novel, later on social media it is revealed that novel Sister of My Heart by an Indian author was the original source of the story.
 Mera Naseeb
So that is my compilation of dramas adapted on foreign novels. Do share your experiences and views on these dramas, or mention if some drama is missing in the list.
Also comment whether foreign novels be adapted as dramas or not? If yes is there any recommendation from your side?
Thanks for your precious time.
