Jeeto Pakistan new quiz/game show of ARY Digital

Jeeto Pakistan is a new quiz/game show which is starting from 18 May 2014 on ARY Digital. The show is hosted by Fahad Mustafa. From highlights it seems to be inspired from a similar recently concluded quiz/game show ‘Inaam Ghar’ of Geo TV. As per Geo TV/Jang Group, the show ‘Inaam Ghar’ has broken all records of viewership, so it might have encouraged the ARY Digital to come up with a similar show.

Indian movie “Children Of War” Is Anti-Pakistan

0

An Indian film titled “Children Of War” has been made by the director Mrityunjay Devvrat. The story of the film is based on the mayhem that ensued as a result of the 1971 war between the West and East Pakistanis. The film focuses on the sufferings of the civilians during this nine month conflict. “The film looks at human stories and personal stories of how they suffered. It is a largely fictional film made up of true stories,” said director Mrityunjay Devvrat.

The film makers largely relied on the facts and figures that were been giving out by Bangladesh. The film shows how children suffered during this conflict. “Not many people know much about Bangladesh or care about it….The aim of ‘Children of War’ is to change that and make people understand, among other things, why there are so many Bangladeshis in India,” The director added, who spent some time in Bangladesh while his parents were working there.

Pakistanis are not happy with the film because they think that it is an attempt to malign the image of Pakistan in the International community. “We will not allow its screening in Pakistan if it is against Pakistan and its armed forces,” said an official from the Central Board Of Film Censors, Islamabad.

“I think no one has the courage to show such a film in Pakistan. How could we approve a film which is based on one-sided Indian propaganda?” he added

MasterChef Pakistan Week 03 – Kitchen Challenge!

This was one good episode of MasterChef. Right from the beginning till the end it was a treat to watch because the execution has been perfect. I liked the introductory part of the episode a lot where all the contestants got to share their excitement of stepping into the MasterChef Kitchen for the very first time. They all seemed really excited & were totally in the mood to face the challenge which was great to see.

Coming onto the MasterChef Kitchen, I must say I am totally impressed. The quality of the Kitchen & the Pantry was brilliant & the finesse was evident. The project managers of MasterChef have really outdone themselves & have done justice to the name of the franchise by living up to the standards.

The episode consisted of 2 challenges where in first challenge the contestants got the core ingredient set by the judges themselves, which was an ‘egg’. The contestants had to use it & make it shine through their dish in just half an hour. The access to pantry also had a time limit but I feel in such a pressure, the time limit shouldn’t be there.. The contestants are already under so much pressure & to test it more is equal to making them a lot more confused. Like I have seen usually in the MasterChef shows, the pantry stays open through out the challenge & the contestants get enough time to think about the dish they want to create, later it depends on how much time they take because it affects the challenge time which in other case is again a time-management test for them so I feel that way it’s still another good option to check how the contestant performs.

I was impressed to see the quality of cooking in the first round too but the judges had to pick 5 dishes that appealed to them the most in the presentation. Without tasting the dishes the judges chose Maryam, Rayyan, Zain, Saad & Amna & Maryam was declared a winner. She got an extra minute in the pantry for the next round as an advantage of winning the first challenge.

The real cooking began when the contestants had to present their signature dishes. Some were outstanding & some looked like it but weren’t impressive in the tasting. Those contestants who made it to the bottom 3 were Ali Shah, Anila Kamar & Iqra Yasin because Ali Shah’s dish wasn’t presentable, Anila Kamar’s was too simple & wasn’t up to the mark & Iqra Yasin’s main ingredient of the dish was tasteless as remarked by the judges. There was a planned elimination which had to happen in this episode but it was dropped by the judges because they felt it was too early to let any contestant go as they didn’t get a decent chance to prove themselves. The top three were Rayyan Durrani, Mudassir Ilyas & Ammarah Noman. The winner of this signature dish challenge not only won a chance of getting the signature dish’s recipe published in the MasterChef Cook Book but also the immunity for the week & it was Ammarah Noman who won the challenge.

I enjoyed watching the episode a lot but I feel the editing once again had a few hit & a miss moments because the dishes of those contestants who were selected in the top 3 in the signature dish round weren’t covered except of Rayyan’s, but we have no idea what made Muddasir & Ammarah the winner because they didn’t show anything related to them.

I am definitely rooting for Khurram, Rayyan, Saad, Zain & Madiha Javed. All the other contestants are great too. Rayyan got the chance to stand out in the couple of first challenges. Let’s see how he performs ahead. Ammarah Noman seems like a strong contender too & so does Maryam.

Coming onto the judges, even though they are being extra cautious in the food judging, which is obviously required but other than that I feel they are being a bit too stern. It’s like they haven’t really made an effort of bonding with the contestants & are being too reserved & serious. Most of the time it felt like they were the teachers dictating the students of 5th standard like telling them to raise hands after the cooking time ended. I feel the judges should ease a little & make an effort of having a healthy & casual chemistry with the contestants so that the contestants can learn more from them & the judges can share their experiences with the contestants as well. Other than that, I totally enjoyed the episode & can’t wait to see the next episode which will feature an elimination of a contestant in the typical MasterChef style Mystery Box Challenge.

Cheers,

Geo TV Suspends The Team Of UJP And Shaista Lodhi

0

Geo TV has realized that the mistake that the team of Utho Jago Pakistan committed is not going to be forgiven by the people therefore the Geo TV administration suspended the entire team of UJP including the host Shaista Lodhi. Geo TV has also started on a probe to find out who was responsible for what happened on the show.

shaista wahidi

Shaista Lodhi joined Geo TV a few years back when she left ARY. She has enjoyed much limelight while she worked for both the channels. Shaista Lodhi apologized to the people but the apology was not accepted by the public. Shaista says that she is afraid that someone might try to hurt her children or her therefore she is going to leave the country until things calm down.

Meanwhile religious scholar Aamir Liaquat who is also working for Geo TV has requested people to forgive Shaista and her crew because things can get even worse as someone can get hurt too because of the rising sentiments.

Merai Humdum Merai Dost – Episode 05

0

This time again we had a heavy dosage of Sajeela and Mazhar and less of Aiman and Haider. I always want to see more of Aiman,Haider and Taufeeq Kamal scenes and I sincerely wish that from next episode,we would see more of them. Because Sajeela and Mazhar track has nothing new to offer. Wohi typical story..

Anyhow, Sajeela came to know that Mazhar is already married and she reacted just like the way she should have reacted. She was completely shattered because it was Mazhar for whom she went against her loving and caring father – father who always put Sajeela first in front of whole world.

Haider is trying every possible way out to make Aiman feel comfortable while living at his place but somehow, Aiman is still unable to come out of the shell and to make herself feel like home. Major reason for Aiman’s discomfort is nothing but the class difference. She comes from a lower middle class family where she always strived for even basic necessities of life and now that she is a part of rich high class ,she is finding it difficult to transform herself into a completely new and different Aiman.

All we can observe is that Aiman is under sheer inferiority complex after stepping into a completely new world where everything seems perfect. She was right to the extent that everything that belongs to Taufeeq Kamaal is more than perfect even his friend,Haider,is a graduate from Harvard University. Relating everything to what her mother told her , she got so worried whether her father will accept her. Because for her, she is neither intelligent nor is she beautiful so how will her father react after meeting her ?

With heavy heart, she woke up and it was really nice to see how  Haider tackled her. The way he admired Aiman’s intelligence told that he is really concerned for her and is trying to be her mentor; He really want Aiman to not under estimate herself merely because she is from lower middle class. Haider knows really well that its Aiman inferiority complex that is not letting Aiman live happy and satisfied life. But he did not know that it is so hard for Aiman to come out of all this – she grew with these complexes as a part of her life as if she inherited them from her mother.

Mazhar is finding it really hard to make Sajeela realize that he is loyal to her and will never leave her. But Sajeela has turned evil this time; She knows that it was due to her financial help because of which Mazhar’s family is living a luxurious life. After a certain point, I second to Sajeela’s thought that Mazhar married her because of her wealthy background. But when I see him trying so hard to cheer up Sajeela, I change my mind. Whatever the mystery is, it will be revealed in upcoming episodes.

Preview of next episode looks very interesting and I think from next episode, this drama will be on a completely new track; It will be more about father-daughter relationship and I would absolutely love to watch that.

Do share your thoughts on today’s episode.

Adhura Milan- Episode 2 Review

0

poster

I am completely enamored by the splendor of Adhura Milan. The contrast between the haves and the have-nots is evident in the display of opulence versus basic necessities. Tabrez finds himself trapped with the burden of his status and the accompanying responsibilities- Mein zindagi guzaartey huey bhi zindagi ko isteefa de chuka houn! Aren’t these the silent musings of women who are helplessly caught in the vicious cycle of situational circumstances? How often do we see a man who feels subdued in the presence of a woman? But then again, Bibi Jaan is no ordinary woman- she is a woman who is clearly in control and doesn’t let him forget it- Hum tumhe bholney ki ijaazat bhi nahin detay! Samina Peerzada continues to impress and leaves a lasting impression. Bibi Jaan is not only his first wife, she is also his mentor. She is all about keeping up appearances and riwayat– something Tabrez has a difficult time adjusting to. His second wife voices her frustrations against Tabrez’s apparent devotion to Bibi Jaan and misses no opportunity to snub him. But Tabrez isn’t one to get affected by her rants- Unko apni haisiyat mein rehney do aur tum apni haisiyat ko girney se bachao. Not exactly a union of the minds here!

Sultanay has the audacity to tell his wife that he is marrying Nayyab- she reacts as any woman would and goes to confront Nayyab, accusing her of trying to steal her husband. Nayyab, shocked at her chacha’s decision, fakes a suicide attempt and seeing no way out, her chachi tells her to run away. Nayyab crosses over to the other side and ends up collapsing near Tabrez Alam. Despite the villagers admonishment, Tabrez decides to take Nayyab with him. There is something about this mystery girl that reminds him of his past- we get further insight into his love interest and their last meeting before she agreed to a marriage arranged by her father. Was Tabrez as sincere as he seems or did she agree to the marriage to let him off the hook knowing that he was incapable of taking any decisions on his own?

E9zTD

We are introduced to another new character- Jana Malik. Her relationship with Dilawar is still unclear but she lives in his home. A wife maybe? But he referred to another woman too- does he also follow the same tradition of multiple wives? Dilawar is the exact opposite of Tabrez- he’s ruthless, dictating and a feared tyrant. His past horrors have shaped him into the man he is today, but Tabrez has had his share of misfortune too. Yet both these men have reacted differently and conduct themselves in entirely contrasting ways. While the villagers respect Tabrez, they live in fear of Dilawar. Next week should be interesting as we will get to see ho Bibi Jaan reacts to Tabrez’s decision of bringing Nayyab. What did you think of Episode 2? Is this on your Friday watch-list yet?

Yours in watching,

Kanwal Murtaza

Famous Novelists – Naheed Sultana Akhtar

Naheed Sultana Akhtar is a fiction writer perhaps from Islamabad. She mostly writes for Urdu Monthly Pakeeza. The fiction writer of female digests are sometimes termed as digest writers too. Since its inception PTV’s management had not produced any drama written by a digest writer for almost thirty years. Novels of female novelists like AR Khatoon and Zubeda Khatoon were adapted but they were never a digest writer. As far I knew Naheed Sultana Akhtar was the first digest writer ever to write a drama for PTV in 1993 breaking the decades old tradition. The experiment yielded tremendous success and paved the way for other digest writers too as drama writers. In fact these days the dramas are dominated by digest writers while specialized drama writers are almost extinct.

Naheed Sultana wrote many dramas (mostly based on her novels) for PTV and NTM (Network Television Marketing the first private channel in Pakistan) in the decade of 90’s most of which were successful. Her dramas were mostly limited to social subjects i.e. marriage, family politics like a regular digest writer. But unlike most digest writers her writing style has depth and diversity thus proving successful in drama writing. Strangely despite being a pioneer and most successful digest writer in 90’s, she has not written any drama for in recent year; an era when drama writing is being dominated by female digest writers.

The dramas of Naheed Sultana Akhtar are discussed here in this article. It is worth mentioning that her dramas were followed by audience of all walks of life even male audience unlike other regular female digest writers which is indeed a distinction of Naheed Sultana Akhtar.

Aanch
Aanch in 1993 was the very first drama ever of PTV to be written by a digest writer. Based on novel ‘Behtay Paani Pe Makan’ by Naheed Sultana and directed by Tariq Jameel a relatively new director at that time from PTV Karachi centre. The case was a mix of senior and new comers, Shafi Muhammad Shah and Shagufta Ejaz were in leading roles. Sami Saani, Mehak Ali, Shehla Solangi, Ayesha Khan, Mehmood Ali, Qaisar Naqvi, Farheen Nafees, Kunwar Nafees and others were in supporting roles. The drama enjoyed tremendous success and following in every way. Shafugrat Ejaz who earlier appeared in supporting roles became famous overnight. The drama also earned considerable revenue for PTV at that time. Interestingly despite such huge success PTV never opted for Naheed Sultana Akhtar as a writer in its own produced dramas after Aanch.

aanch

She Jee
Seeing the success of Aanch, Network Television Marketing (NTM, the first private channel of Pakistan) instantly produced the second drama written by Naheed Sultana Akhtar named She Jee in 1994. It was a mini serial (7 episodes) and proved successful too. Rubina Ashraf, Shakeel and Babar Ali were in leading roles. Zeenat Yasmeen, Qazi Wajid, Nighat Chauhdary, Jamshed Ansari and others were in supporting roles. At that time NTM was only available in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad so this drama was not aired nation wide.

she jee

Yeh Zindagi
Yeh Zindagi is a drama aired on PTV in 1995 written by Naheed Sultana Akthar and directed by Sultana Siddiqi. It was produced by Moomal Productions. Mahnoor Baloch, Qaisar Khan Nizamani , Nauman Ejaz, Humayun Saeed and Mona Jonejo were in leading roles. Jahan Ara Hai, Rizwana Ahmed, Dr. Imrana Maqsood, Badar Khalil were in supporting roles. The drama enjoyed huge success for its unique subject being the first one to discuss sensitive issue of ‘Halala’ but in a responsible and restricted manner. The OST ‘Zindagi Ke Sab Lamhay Yaadgaar hotay hain’ was popular too sung by Mehnaz, composed by Javed Allah Ditta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y48FIREoaN4

Saibaan
Saibaan in 1998 was also aired on PTV was a private production. The drama was aired at 10PM after khabarnama (news bulletin at 9) due to which it was not followed widely. Laila Wasti, Adnan Siddiqi and Shehla Qureshi were in lead roles.

Wafa Ke Mausam
Wafa Kay Mausam was produced by Moomal productions and aired on PTV in 2001. Written by Naheed Sultana and directed by Sultana Siddiqi. Samina Peerzada made a comeback on television screens after a gap of six years from Wafa Kay Mausam. Samina Peerzada, Khalid Ahmed, Nauman Ejaz, Marina Khan, Safiya Kheri, Nida Pasha, Kunwar Nafees, Mona Liza and Behroz Sabazwari were in prominent roles.

wafa

Doosri Aurat
Doosri Aurat was produced by Abdullah Kadwani and aired on PTV in 2002. Abdullah Kadwani, Ayesha Khan, Saira Khan, Aijaz Aslam, Layla Zuberi and Shakeel were in main roles. It was a high budgeted drama and was one of the successful dramas of 2002.

Daurat

Hawa, Rait aur Aangan
Aired in late 2000’s on PTV, it is to date the last drama by Naheed Sultana Akhtar directed by Ali Rizvi. It was a private production starring Sania Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui,Asad, Badar Khalil, Shakeel, Zeenat Yasmeen, Shahmir,Lubna Aslam, Rubi Niazi, Ayesha Gul. To date it is last drama by Naheed Sultana Akhtar

hawa raat aur aangan

Till mid 2000’s; many private satellite entertainment channel strengthened their viewership and PTV was no more the first choice of Pakistani viewers. In this new age of drama, many female digest writers earned fame and success. For past many years drama writing is dominated by female digest writers, but ironically the first one who started this trend is missing from the scene. Before Naheed Sultana Akhtar, there was a myth that digest writers can never be a successful drama writer due to limited subjects and vision. But Naheed proved this myth totally wrong by providing powerful social dramas and made her own place in the list of classic drama writers.

Do share your thoughts and experiences regarding contributions of Naheed Sultana Akhtar.

Thanks for reading.

Mohabbat Subha Ka Sitara Hai – The Finale!

Mohabbat subh ka sitara hai jo zindagi ke asman ka sub se roshan aur jagmagata sitara hai. Jo zindagi ko tareekiyu mein se bhi nikaal lata hai, usay simt deta hai, rasta dikhata hai aur us sitare ko paa lene ke baad, zindagi mei rehnumaye ke liye asman ke kisi chotay baray sitaray ki zarurat baaki nahi rehti.

These lines beautifully summed up the power of love! This last episode belonged to Adeel Hussein right from the get-go; he is absolutely brilliant at playing the knight in the shining amour. The way Zeeshan got closer to Romaissa and Maham had to be one of the most convincing parts of this entire drama serial. Similarly, the manner in which Romaissa finally got ready to give Zeeshan that place in her heart which was occupied by Nabeel’s memories for so many years, was very well done. Zeeshan gradually saw the true colors of his family and had ample time to make his decision. Romaissa learned to trust Zeeshan when she saw that there was a special place for Maham in his heart in particular. Zeeshan’s first conversation with his mother in the beginning of the episode was music to my ears. Like Zeeshan said Maham made him love her, Romaissa needs to learn a few important lessons from her little princess. Romaissa didn’t learn to value herself, not that I was expecting her to go through a miraculous change but she got her happy ending.

Zeeshan’s “mummy” thought she had a surprise for him but he was the one with the real surprise! “Baaz logon ke nazdeek rishton se bhar kr kuch nahi hota aur baaz ke nazdeek cheezon se bhar kur kuch nahi hota aur ap second category mei atay hei”. Zeeshan “forgave” his parents just like I expected him to but he wasn’t going to let them have all of Nabeel’s wealth. The scene between Romaissa and Zeeshan in which he tells her about the kind of woman he wants her to be and everything else was very poignant.

msksh1

I really wanted to see Romaissa happy in tonight’s episode but all we got was a smile in the end. I think the expressions of contentment and liberation would have been much more appropriate in the scene in which Romaissa talks about her journey of finding “Subh ka sitara”. Similarly when it was raining and Romaissa thought that for once everything was picture perfect, she had the same painful expressions on her face.

msksh2

Nabeel’s family was forgiven in the end just like expected, I really wanted to see them suffer just like many other people out there but I knew that Zeeshan and Romaissa are not the sort of people who will punish anyone let alone their own family. Sanam Jung and Adeel Hussein looked great together right from the first time they shared the screen but it was Adeel Hussein who stole the show today. So a big thank you to him for making this episode worthwhile. The child star playing Maham deserves a special mention here for lighting up the screen every time she appeared on it. I appreciate the final message that was conveyed in the drama by Zeeshan but overall the drama did not rise above average. I expected much better from Umera Ahmed in particular. I hope that next time Umera Ahmed will give us something truly memorable to watch.

Do share your thoughts about this last episode.

Pehchan – Episode 5

“Kisi ki zindagi ke faisle krna bara sawab ka kaam hai”…Laila’s mother did not stop for a second to think about the irony in this statement. She is too busy planning the perfect life for her daughter to think about anything else…not even her daughter’s likes, dislikes or happiness. Now that she has successfully married her daughter off in a family most people around her can only dream of marrying their daughters in, she wants Laila to have a son soon! Because that is the only way in which Laila can have a strong hold in her new house. Laila’s father is quick to remind her mother that sons don’t come with guarantees but nothing in the world can change the way Laila’s mother thinks. It is sad how she underestimates herself and her daughter. The way she constantly keeps on praising her daughter’s mother in law and her husband goes to show that she has no self-worth. Laila’s father on the other hand values his daughter the way she deserves to be valued but has very little say in the house.

pehchan1

Mansoor’s mother on the other hand knows her “value” only too well. Not only does she come from a wealthy background but she is after all the mother of an ideal son who in her eyes is perfect in every way. The way these two women look at their children defines the kind of individuals their children have grown up to be. While Laila thinks she has to prove herself at every step, Mansoor does not feel the need to do so. Laila is still trying very hard to understand her husband and rightly so too. Alishba Yusef is outstanding as Laila; she portrays Laila’s sensitivity and simplicity perfectly.

My opinion about Mansoor went even more downhill after watching tonight’s episode. He does treat women like objects – meant to fulfill his needs and desires. The way he treated Laila and everything that Kukoo said about Mansoor went to show that he would never put anyone or anything above his own feelings. Mansoor is a charmer in his own weird way and he knows it only too well. He only lets Kukoo go after their chance meeting because he knows that she still loves him and he can have her back anytime he wants. The chance meeting of Mansoor and Kukoo was really well done. Iffat Omer owns her character completely and Sohail Sameer manages to pull it off although he does not have all that it takes to play this character. He manages to convince you that he indeed is a charmer, which in my opinion is grand!

pehchan2

When Kukoo packed her bags and left, I thought she was finally going to leave Khurram but later on when she came back and asked him those questions I couldn’t help but relate to her desire of being loved by a real man! Khurram, in my opinion is a sorry excuse of a man. Did Kukoo fall out of love with Khurram only after Mansoor came into her life? Well her conversation with Mrs. Khan surely suggested just that.

pehchan3

I love this show till now; watching it is like reading a beautiful novel. The credit for that goes to the writer and the director both. The way we are being shown every little detail in beyond brilliant. There is nothing overdramatic about the play but you can’t help but relate to and understand the characters. Tonight’s episode was beautifully directed, like always. The scene in which Laila talks to her parents on the phone was very touching and brilliantly done in all aspects. The only problem was that when Laila comes out in the balcony with a towel tied around her head, it was a little too obvious that her hair was already dried plus the viewers “got the message” any way! I loved the way different tracks in the story were handled especially in this episode.

Do share your thoughts about this latest episode even if you disagree with how I feel about it.

There are many people who are arguing what the real issue regarding Geo’s action is. Is it that the manqabat ‘ Ali ke Saath hai Zahra ki Shaadi’ was sung at someone’s wedding. Is it that it was sung on “Veena Malik’s” wedding enactment or the real issue is the way the people on the set were behaving when the manqabat was being sung?

Here is a video of the wedding of a couple who does not come from a very well to do background. Some very respected people of our society like Sarim Burney and his wife are also part of the function. Everyone is sitting respectfully and listening to the manqabat. Now, we want to know what the real issue is because it was the talk show host of ARY Mubashar Lucman who raised the issue in the first place. Mubashar Lucman said in his show that is this manqabat was sung in his own sister’s wedding, it would still be wrong. What is his stance now?

Koi Nahi Apna – Episode 6

Like I said last time, not much has changed between Alvira and Hamza in all these years. Hamza has been working day and night to make a career but Alvira still cannot afford a full time maid! To add to her troubles, she is expecting again. Hamza’s character is taking a turn for the worse too. His reaction towards Alvira’s pregnancy was disappointing and the way he snubbed Zainab was totally uncalled for. I am equally disappointed with Alvira who does not think twice before sharing her marriage woes in front of her six year old daughter. I found Shiza’s attitude towards her father very strange and definitely a result of learned behavior because I know for a fact that children love their fathers and look up to them even if they don’t spend enough time with them. Teenagers may have these issues but definitely not a six year old! Shiza is another Alvira in the making so Hamza be warned!

kna1

All the episodes after Alvira and Hamza’s marriage have followed a pattern. There is a scene or two of happy times – when Hamza takes Alvira out, makes her bed tea or brings her flowers. Then there is always a scene in which Hamza or Alvira are upset because Hamza’s mother spends too many days at her sister’s house. I am glad that she has someone to visit and is not overly dependent on her son. Alvira’s mother in law’s attitude is very wrong indeed but the fact that Alvira gives her a shut-up call every time she tells her off more than makes up for it. There are plenty of scenes in which Alvira is complaining about her troubles in every episode. We have never seen Alvira saying anything nice to Hamza. There is hardly a time when she appreciated the poor man.

kna2

I think all the wives out there who are quite happy with spending a few hours of quality time in the day with their busy husbands should question their sanity after watching this show! When these petty issues start becoming a real problem in marriage then they escalate in to something big in only a few years. In the given circumstances, I am surprised that Hamza and Alvira are still together. Alvira could have started working after Shiza started school but I guess whining is a lot more fun than looking for solutions!

kna3

Honestly speaking I am sick and tired of listening to Alvira’s constant rants and I am equally tired of watching the same scenes over and over again! This episode did not even deserve to be reviewed. The lack of imagination and creativity in the script and direction is putting me to sleep. I expected better from Fahad Mustafa’s production house and also from Sarwat Gillani because she has always been so wise while choosing the projects she works in.

Izteraab – Episode 07!

Ohkay, I must say this episode reminded me so much of what the principal said to Jazib & Zara in the previous episode & that is the need of their issues being sorted by themselves. It looks like in their battle, Dua is getting dragged, beaten & is suffering unnecessarily.

I must say I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Dua because of the position she gets to, as from one side she gets blamed by Zara & on the other Jazib burdens her with more responsibilities. Jazib straight away told Dua that she is lacking in taking care of the kids which was totally unreasonable because it’s like now he even expects her to check if the screws of the window grills are intact every night before she sleeps. Jazib loves telling her how irresponsible she is but I want someone to pose the same question to him asking how much has he done for the kids himself? He loves tossing away his responsibilities & then sleeping but what he can’t do is take care of ‘his’ own kids who stay in ‘his’ home. He certainly found a quick substitute for Zara seeing how she was ignoring his needs, so why can’t he replace Dua with a bit more younger, a bit more domesticated third wife, who’d take care of his kids on his behalf?

The whole thief issue could’ve been avoided IF Jazib had sent the kids to Zara or if Zara herself had taken the kids with her knowing that Jazib was going out on a business trip. The way she reminded Dua that she was falling short on her responsibility was irrational too. It wasn’t that Dua gave an invitation to the theif because her responsibility stops at the door step & it doesn’t mean that she had to do a night patrolling just because she is taking care of someone else’s kids. Zara blamed everything on Dua that she is spoiling her kids & what not, so when she herself knows that Dua is a simpleton who teaches nothing but bad stuff to her kids, then why rely so much on her in the very first place?

Jazib met Zara & the way he threw a tantrum on Dua was once again uncalled for. He missed a lunch (which, by the way, is a big deal) just because the kids refused to come with him & chose to stay with Zara. Jazib was unhappy with Dua because he thought she was the culprit but why didn’t he ask himself if he was being a good father or not? Even after eating home-made Jalebis, Jazib is now having second thoughts that he should’ve waited till Nano’s death so that Zara could’ve left the job & they had stayed together because the main reason of bone of contention between Jazib & Zara was Zara’s job, but now when she has left it, Jazib was looking at her in an awe of how perfect she is. I think of all the characters in this drama, the award for the worst character goes to Jazib, yes, no surprises there.

Zara certainly has ego issues, I never knew that I’d say that about her but the way she is being negative is definitely giving me the reason to. She never left job because she didn’t want to give this satisfaction of winning to Jazib & she never wanted to be bossed around by him, but now when she has left it based on her own decision, she still dragged Jazib’s name in between. Leaving a job was her own choice, she decided to compromise on her marriage but never let go of her job in the first place but now when she has done it, she should accept it solely & gracefully that too without any regrets because she is doing it for her kids who are her priority & no one else.

Seeing how Jazib & Zara both rely on Dua & then belittle her is annoying. Dua was being annoying initially but that’s how she is, they have molded her character like that but just because is domesticated, Zara thinks she is incapable of doing anything & just because unforeseeable things happen, Jazib ends up blaming her too, which I feel is a lot demeaning & they are actually bashing the girls who believe in being good housewives. I think they both need to sit down & decide what they want to do, keeping Dua aside. Zara in the end obviously had to ask Dua for a favor so I am thinking how did she depend on her, how did she think that Dua was capable enough that she’d be able to pick the right kids from the right school? As per Zara, she has no brains right?

Anyways, Jazib’s little story reading gave away the future of this play. In a few lines he read the script but I must say that the way they have tackled the script so far, no one could’ve guessed what was about to happen. I feel that people tried to unveil the story by publishing articles & commenting about it way too early which spoiled the charm of the story because I feel if that wouldn’t have happened, we might as well have felt for the characters a lot more because now it has just become a normal detail that we all are waiting for to happen. Share your thoughts on this episode.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Pyarai Afzal – Farah Vs Yasmeen.

0

24 episodes down and this show is still entertaining as it was in its first half. Despite of the fact that story is unfolding quite slowly, still strong dialogues and above all its perfect cast is more than enough to  glue its viewers in front of their television screens. Further, this show is bringing back the “family drama” trend and I hope that drama-makers will now be more sensitive in producing the quality content – Content that all of us can comfortably watch and enjoy with our families.

When a child is in trouble, a mother’s instinct tells her about the ongoing crisis through which her child is passing. But this time, it was not only Afzal’s mother – Every person related to Afzal felt as if there is some ongoing trouble at Afzal’s end. Yasmeen’s impatience clearly depicted that how much worried she is for Afzal. Kher se , we came to know that Afzal is all well and he will be discharged within few days.

Now coming to Hyderabad, Farah’s every single action narrated that she is not at all feeling comfortable after rejecting Afzal. This is the time when the feeling of remorse and regret of refusal is burning her deep inside and for the peace of her mind, she decided to go to Karachi with her Father. Indeed, it felt very nice to watch how she slept in the car just for the sake of going to Karachi to look for Afzal – After all, she knew that she won’t be able to wake up early in the morning and she didnot want to take any risk this time.

Farah’s visit to Yasmeen was quite interesting to watch; The way Farah inquired all “aglee pichlee”  stories from Yasmeen showed how desperately she is yearning for Afzal. There was a huge grin on my  face while watching whole of Farah and Yasmeen’s “rapid fire round”.

Farah took no notice that she was talking to her father when she came back from Yasmeen’s home – Ofcourse, she was habitual of using those few trademark words every time she opens her mouth and now that she is all alone with her father, she can’t help herself to stop uttering them. She was unable to open up infront of anyone so she started cursing Lubna after meeting Yasmeen. Farah’s rage and jealousy pointed out nothing but her love for Afzal.

On the other side, Lubna’s disappointment after knowing  the details showed that she was in no way pretending to love Afzal – rather she was actually fond of Afzal. Yasmeen apni jaga paraishan thei that who Farah is and whats her relation with Afzal. Her mother was clever enough to judge that who will come for a security guard unless there is some ongoing chemistry between them?

Wali’s cheapness was at its peak today but this time Yasmeen confronted him confidently because she knows that Afzal will be there for her now. I laughed every-time Khala slapped her bhaanja – he deserves to be slapped again and again. Episode ended with a very sad note; Babu Hameed became Wali’s victim and I am dead sure, Afzal will not spare him this time.

With whom would you want Afzal to end up ? Farah or Yasmeen ?

I would love to read your comments about this episode.

Drama Of The Week – Mere Pass Pass

I watched the play Mere Pass Pass when it went on air a few years back but when I sat down to watch it again now so that I could do justice to my review, I realized there was very little which I had actually forgotten. Yes Mere Pass Pass is one of those plays which leave a lasting impression on your mind. The play has been written by Samira Fazal, it has been directed by Misbah Khalid and produced by Momina Duraid. When Mere Pass Pass went on air Noor-ul-Huda Shah was part of the Hum TV network too and I think it was a time when both Noor-ul-Huda Shah and Momina Duraid used to take special interest in the scripts that were being written for Hum TV. That was probably why the scripts back then had much more clarity. The main cast consists of Deepak Perwani, Nadia Jameel, Moammar Rana, Aysha Khan (senior), Faisal Shah and Ayesha Sana.

mpp review

The story of Mere Pass Pass is unusual; it is the story of a man Shariq (Moammar Rana) who falls in love with a married woman. It is a case of love at first sight, he has no idea that Eman (Nadia Jameel) is married to Adil Kamran (Deepak Perwani) – a man who visits the gym owned by Shariq quite often and is definitely not among Shariq’s favorite clients. The way the characters are related to each other is very interesting indeed. Unlike the recent plays written by Samira Fazal, the personality traits of the characters stay the same right till the end. I am all for character development but this play is more story driven. The writer does a superb job of sticking to the main story right till the end. You can’t help but fall in love with Shariq’s character in particular. There are times when you wonder if people like him really exist and there are times when you want to believe desperately that human race would be nowhere without people like him! Shariq’s commitment to Eman and his silent love for her is the main attraction of the play. I found myself rooting for them all through the play.

mpp review1

Eman and Adil stay happily married for five years. Although, they are poles apart but Eman’s love for her husband and compromising nature keeps the relationship going. Adil Kamran is a very practical, headstrong, heartless and an unreasonable person, so much so that nothing in his life is more important than the goals he has set for himself. He is definitely a person who is made up of his complexes; his sole aim in life is to have a good lifestyle and he cannot put up with people with a “middle class mentality”. Eman respects the way Adil wants to live his life, not only this she tries her best to mould herself according to her husband’s wishes. Eman does all this for Adil because she loves him, she never thinks that she is doing anything extraordinary by trying to live the life Adil dreamed for them. Eman believes in deriving happiness out of simple things; this is one trait of her personality she cannot grow out of despite of Adil’s insistence that she should change herself.

Shariq is simple, genuine and crazy in love with Eman. Shariq gets the opportunity to get closer to Eman when he starts living next door to her. Eman and Adil’s marriage breaks apart because of Adil’s stubborn and unreasonable behavior (I am not going to give away the main twist in the tale because some people may not have watched the play). The way Shariq and Eman evolve from being complete strangers to best friends is shown brilliantly. Faizer (Faisal Shah) and Shariq’s friendship is also a very special part of the play. Faisal Shah’s dialogue delivery is not impressive most of the times but the cuteness of his character more than makes up for it.

mpp review2

The beauty of this play lies in its simplicity, the perfect characterization and a very engaging screenplay. Every character and actor leaves a lasting impact. The casting is faultless and all the actors share superb on screen chemistry. There are times when the camera work isn’t very impressive but overall the direction and editing is spot on. Nadia Jameel is flawless as Eman and Moammar Rana is equally brilliant as Shariq, he brings out the best in his character. I just wish both of them would have paid a little more attention to their wardrobes. Deepak Perwani was the perfect choice for playing Adil; his body language and dialogue delivery are very convincing. I really enjoyed watching Ayesha Sana after a long time; she is such a fine actress, I wonder why we don’t get to see her in dramas any more. Ayesha Khan (senior) stole my heart as Shariq’s mother, I loved her character and her acting. The baby playing Ana is adorable. Samira Fazal deserves due credit for showing some of the most extraordinary mother in laws in her drama serials.

Eman may have been an emotionally weak and vulnerable person at one time but Shariq’s love gives her the strength to let go of the past. It was a pleasure watching a woman following her heart and making a wise choice in the end. There were a few minor details which were not at all convincing like the way everyone left their front doors open all the time and why was Emaan still wearing her engagement ring right till the second last episode? I am not sure if the recap of the entire serial was needed before showing the last episode since the play was short and to the point.

The OST of the play has been beautifully sung by Hadiqa Kiyani and Atif Aslam. I enjoyed listening to it over and over again. All the episodes are available on youtube in good quality. The play had a sequel as well; it was the first Pakistani drama with a sequel. I think this play is a must watch for everyone who has not seen it.

I would love to hear from all those viewers who have watched the play.

Badar Khalil is the most seasoned actress of our drama industry. We have seen her performing in some of the most unforgettable plays in Pakistani history like Ankahi, Tanhaiyan, Dhoop Kinare, Bi Jamalo, Malal, Doraha, Qutubuddins, Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewa and many others. Badar Khalil started her acting career in 1974 and has been illuminating our television screen right till now. She never restricted herself to the same kind of roles, that is why many of the plays that she played were made memorable by her.

The latest news is that Badar Khalil will not be seen in Pakistani dramas anymore because she is leaving for Canada for good. She has done great service to the Pakistani drama industry by sticking to it for a long span of time. We wish her all the best in the future too.

Merai Humdum Merai Dost – Episode 03 & 04

0

After watching both episodes back to back, all I can say is that the story of the show is unfolding just the way I expected it to be unfolded. Every artist in this show is doing great job and it seems that the casting team have done special efforts and by learning deep insights of this novel, they decided who would fit in the role of the respective character.

Aiman is finding herself very uncomfortable and unfit for this upper class society and for that she is failing to gel in with everyone. She feels so empty deep inside because her father is not there when she needs him the most. Despite of the fact that they are ultra loving and caring people, she is living with Haider and his Bibi half-heartedly because she feels completely lost.

The scene where Aiman talked to her father was worth watching ; Sanam Jung literally outdid herself. She had mixed feeling of hatred and reproach while talking to her father. She wanted to open her heart out and to tell her father that how hard her life was when she was with her mother and he left them,  she wanted to complain and cry out loud but all she can do is just to listen and answer to Taufeeq’s straight and serious questions. The  pain in her voice when she talked to her step mother,Almas, was clearly depicting that how difficult it is for Aiman to gulp the fact that Taufeeq Kamal left Zainab(Aiman’s mother) solely for Almas and now that she is dead, Aiman has no option but to live and do what her father opts of her.

Previously, we knew that Sajeela and Mazhar are living a life that is nothing but a comprise. But after watching these two episodes,we came to know that Sajeela literally fought to marry Mazhar. As she said, her father always cared for her the most but when he came to know that Mazhar belongs to middle-class family ,he rejected him just like that. Sajeela find it difficult to live without Mazhar and she left her house. I am glad that Mazhar proved Sajeela’s father misconception to be wrong – He was definitely not after the wealth that Sajeela owns. They said their good byes and I must say that the whole good bye sequence was way too much extended for no reason; They could have wrapped up that flashback of good bye within few minutes .By the way, that was the only point in both episodes where I felt a bit bored else I found every scene interesting.

Haider is being so kind to Aiman and his kindness is somehow leaving an impact on Aiman that he is caring for her because he cares for Taufeeq Kamal. I really enjoyed that gift part where Haider was the teacher and Aiman was trying to be a good learner by following every instruction that he gave her and the cute thing about that scene was that Haider treated Aiman like a kid. And for that, I want to give a special mention of Adnan Siddiqui’s acting skills – Typically, male artists confuse being caring with flirty kind of expressions but Adnan was completely out of that.I mean not for a sec, he gave an impression that there is some ongoing chemistry between them or somewhat closer to that.

I really enjoy the direction of this show at some points like when Haider took Aiman for dinner and shopping ,we even enjoyed to see that mouthwatering seafood platter and after that the use of folk and knife by Haider and Aiman having her food all by her hands, pointing the difference in her living standard ,was also one of the minutest details that was taken care of during direction. Acha, I thought she will be using and trying harder to have her food with folk and knife too laken shukar hai she was confident enough to have her meal just the way she want it to be eaten.

Episode ended when Sajeela came to know that Mazhar is already married. Lets see how the story will unfold and what else this show has to offer in upcoming episodes.

Whats your say about this show ?

Is It Justified For A Mother To Take The Lives Of Her Kids?

0

I am not here to judge anyone at all. I can’t even remotely relate to the hardships those people must have to go through who are not even sure where their next meal will come from. Life is not a bed of roses for such people. People like us who have all the luxuries of life do not have the right to judge such people’s actions at all BUT somehow I can’t just ignore these regular incidents of mothers killing their own children because of poverty. Such incidents are on the rise. I am really sorry but I can’t help but judge such actions.

Untitled

First of all it is illegal, immoral and inhuman to kill anyone at all. No matter how frustrated or angry you are, you deal with it, you just don’t kill people! Anyone who takes the life of another person can’t possible have a logical explanation for it but when mothers take the lives of their own kids, it is even more shocking. What astounds me is that these mothers who kill their children because they can’t see them crying and suffering because of hunger kill only their children and not their own selves. How can they think that they continue living after committing such a heinous act. Why do they spare their own lives if they can’t spare the lives of their children? Also isn’t is better to leave these children in so many welfare centers that are there all over the country which are doing a commendable job of taking care of children in need. These welfare centers do not only take care of children but they also keep mothers who cannot support themselves.

Untitled2

Private media is also very eager to help such persons. Why not go to a news channel’s office and ask them to run a news for them so that people will help such people. I personally know that there are Mazars in which people get food for free almost daily. There is always someone or the other feeding the poor.

Untitled4

I think mothers who kill their children have some deeper psychological issues. Postpartum depression is something very real. If not dealt with properly it can lead mothers to kill their own children. In our country it is very difficult to treat such conditions because most people do not even know that clinical depression can take an ugly turn.

Untitled5

What do you think? Do you think that mother who kills her children, really does so because she cannot see them starve or is it because she has some other psychological problem? There have been many incidents in which the mothers did not have any “valid” reason for killing their children. Children need protection from such mothers, who will protect them???

Marasim – Episode 07!

Ohkay, so finally Nayab’s nightmare has been materialized. I couldn’t help feeling anything but sympathy for her because of how she was paying the price of losing her mother. It’s like she had to lose everything once she lost her mother because all the promises Nayab’s mother made were now buried too.

Gaitiara didn’t lose hope & knew how to get what she wanted. She knew just exactly who was the right person to talk to even after finding out that both Nayab & Almas have rejected the proposal. Gaitiara flaunted her wealth & material blessings in front of Almas’s husband because she knew he’d fall prey to her tact. Sadly for Nayab, Almas turned out to be as cruel as anybody else because Almas was so blinded by Gaitiara’s status that she started weighing Nayab’s luck on the basis of the wealth she’d attain after she’d get married to Daood, plus as an excuse she wanted to make it clear that by no means she’d make her husband angry & walk an extra mile for her sister, so for that she was backing out.

Very clearly Gaitiara also told Almas that Daood is heart-broken but she knew all of her son’s shortcomings will be concealed because of his bank balance. Despite knowing what Zaid meant to Nayab & also how Daood would be least bothered about her sister, Almas got convinced that the luck was approaching Nayab herself therefore she forced her into this relation.

Zaid on his own was instinctive about what was about to happen & his worst fears came true when he got to know how Nayab was being pressurized. I thought his mother would never agree to a sudden marriage but she did because she knew her sister had promised & sealed Nayab’s relation to Zaid while she was alive. At least she was more compassionate & sincere towards a promise that was made by someone who died but sadly Almas didn’t quite have a second thought that she’d be breaking off her mother’s promise.

I felt Urwa Hocane acted really well in that particular scene where she was trying to convince Almas for rejecting the proposal. She has done a brilliant job as Nayab. Nayab’s utterance that it seems like she is paying the price of staying at Almas’s place was just so real. The last scene seemed a bit too filmy but never-mind, it was done perfectly well too. Zaid made it to Almas’s place just at the right time but he knew he was too late to undo anything that had just happened.

Finally, after this I think there would be nothing left for Nayab or Zaid to hold onto because their parting has been sealed. Let’s see how rest of the story unfolds.
