On 21st of August Rawalpindi court acquitted veteran actress Atiqa Odho in the case of carrying two liquor bottle in her luggage at airport after 9 years.

The court in the final verdict said that there there wasn’t any evidence against Atiqa Odho. The verdict was announced by Rawalpindi’s judicial magistrate Yasir Chaudhry.

In 2011, Odho was detained by the Airport Security Force at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport for allegedly carrying two liquor bottles in her luggage. She was released shortly after the intervention of some ‘influential figures’ in the matter.

Then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had taken suo motu notice of her release and ordered authorities to lodge a first information report of the incident.

Now after 9 years when the court has finally acquitted Atiqa Odho she has shared her words with her followers through Instagram. Atiqa shared a snippet from “Aj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Sath” and wrote: “9 years waited for Justice and finally got it. Never lost hope on our Judicial system and a brave magistrate finally did the honorable thing and accepted my acquittal appeal. It’s been a long and painful journey but if it helps the citizens of Pakistan get quicker justice after this, it’s all worth it. As for the former CJP Iftikhar Chaudry, I feel so sorry for him. He lost a golden opportunity to serve our nation and instead played petty politics and ruined his own name and embarrassed our honorable judiciary. The people have spoken so I don’t need to say more. Famous Pakistani actress Atiqa Odho was allegedly caught by Airport Police in Islamabad while carrying two bottles of liquor with her to Karachi. Alcohol is banned on plane so a case was registered against her and the then Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry issued a sue moto action for the case.

Her lawyers have been fighting against the sue moto action and a three judges bench sat on 26th September to listen to Atiqa Odho’s lawyer Syed Ali Zafar. So, Atiqa is now set to appear in the court for her case, almost seven years since the first allegation.

In a statement Atiqa said, “It’s a comedy written by an Indian writer”. “The cast is completely Pakistani, with a couple of big names doing a film for the first time.” She also added, “I’ve gone a new fun look for my role”. “I play an interesting character, a modern and independent single mum who brought up her kids single-handedly.”

The director of the film is Sonia Ahmed, whose is also the director of the critically acclaimed documentary I Shall Dance to her credit.

Further Atiqa also shared that she really liked the character and did not want to miss an opportunity to support new filmmakers was a big factor in her decision to take on the role.

There are only a few superstars in Pakistan who have a huge fan following not only in their home country but abroad as well and Atif Aslam is one such name. A doctor from that hospital shared CCTV footage of Atif Aslam as he came by to distribute ration bags among people himself. The doctor shared that he knows Atif as he drives by his clinic sometimes but yesterday some person came, asked his staff how many people were working in the clinic, gave them ration bags from his car and drove off without trying to take any pictures.
