Tum Yaad Aye – Episode 24

Hmm so 24 episodes down and we finally learn Mehtaab’s story. Her first husband was apparently going to go ahead with marrying another woman, a singer and although it is unclear whether he actually did marry her or not but Mehtaab did not marry Yusuf till a year after her first husband’s death. As Zainy says that ‘zehn par paray parday hatt gaye’ but there are still a few questions in my mind such as what was in the letter her father had penned then? Had he fabricated a story that Zainy ended up believing or was it only half the story? Or was the letter even from her father in the first place?

Yusuf and Sherry’s conversations are interesting. I have to admire how Yusuf has stepped up to fulfil his role as a father after Mehtaab’s death and to not let Zainy feel she is alone. Sherry was always Zainy’s saviour but with Mehtaab’s death, his heart seems to have hardened against Zainy. He accuses his father of ‘spoiling’ Zainy again and feels she is responsible for Mehtaab’s death for causing her all the grief and pain that she did. When Yusuf tells him to let things go, his ‘puraani baat ussay dekhtay he nayee ho jaati hai’ made me wonder whether he was referring to the love he felt for Zainy or the anger over Mehtaab’s death that resurfaces when he sees her but the last scene where we hear his thoughts out loud make it very clear that he is still in love with Zainy.

PIC1

Ahmer has taken a rigid stance against Zainy’s family. He was all for trying to make amends when he was hoping to see some cash somewhere but I suppose Mehtaab’s provident fund was ample enough to do away with that urge. Where he shares contentedly his feelings over his family’s gathering, he flares up when Zainy mentions hers. Pehlay they were all her father’s ‘qaatil’ now they are all minus Mehtaab – Mehtaab’s qaatil. Sigh. However much I do not like Ahmer spewing venom and standing in the way of Zainy and her ‘other’ family – I feel he does have a point with regards to the relationship with Sherry. No, I am not siding with dhakiyanoos Ahmer but his ‘bhai kaunsa wala – jiss say shaadi honay wali thi’ did hit a bit too close to home. Yes, cousins are often ‘bhai’ before marriage but the oscillating between Sherry bhai and then the conversations about honeymoon with Abba in tow and then flashbacks in this episode regarding ‘bad omens’ left me all confused – Ahmer tau phir Ahmer hai!

Where Ahmer is all loud, emotional and outspoken, Sherry is just as quiet, introverted and unwilling to share his thoughts with others. He spends hours in Mehtaab’s room, looking at her things and lost in old memories. Abba worries and feels he should move on but Novera took things a bit far by taking matters into her own hands and instructing Liaqat chacha to box up Mehtaab’s belongings and give them to the poor. Whether it was time to give away Mehtaab’s things or not – it was not her call to make, despite her ‘yeh mera bhi ghar hai’ squeaky speech. Yusuf, Mehtaab and Sherry all put together do not feel as angry and righteous about what Zainy has done than this Novera alone does. True, her actions are spurned by her fear of losing Sherry to Zainy but then she has always known he loves Zainy and she was well aware of that when she married him. Also, why has Sherry suddenly returned from Islamabad? Why the secrecy over why Novera has not come back? Is she coming back?!

PIC2

Zainy’s mission to now mend the ‘bridge’ between both families seems quite idealistic. In my opinion, there is nothing really to mend. Mehtaab is gone, her ex husband is gone, Abba has forgiven Zainy – all she really needs is Ahmer to stop forbidding her to meet her family and how she plans to change that I do not know. When she walked back into her home I did think for a moment maybe she would be able to strengthen Sherry and Novera’s relationship and change Ahmer’s way of thinking and remain happy with him but upon learning that Novera is absent from the scene – I wonder if Zainy is destined to end up with Sherry. Sherry is angry and refusing to speak to Zainy but his wishy washy ‘ I hate you Zainy’ at the end was anything but convincing.

Zainy has won Abba over and I do not think it will be long when she will be able to win Sherry over again. What really holds my interest at this point is wondering where does this all go from here? Ahmer’s greed and disrespect for Zainy’s family and his insecurity over Sherry ‘bhai’ can not possibly disappear overnight? While it is nice to see Zainy have Yusuf’s support and love again and flourish in that love, what kind of future does she have in that household with Novera around? She is frustrated with Ahmer but she does not hate him as yet and although he is stubborn, he does show concern for her at times such as when he asked her what was wrong as he felt she had been crying etc? I am glad more screen time has been given to Sherry’s character again as I feel Agha Ali has fit into this role so well and his scenes are a treat to watch. The chemistry and unspoken feelings between him and Seher Afzal have been done so well especially in the graveyard last episode and when Zainy returns to her house in this one. I really like this aspect of Yusuf’s character where he is there for Zainy but even though he detests Ahmer and Co he still does not try to poison her or lead her astray as he says she should tell her husband where she is going etc. I love how the director has not tried to include any unnecessary characters and Phuppo and Taayi are not given more screen time than necessary so that the focus does remain on the main characters.

I suppose the drama will be wrapped up within the next couple of episodes which will be good because I would hate for it to be dragged out now. What did you all make of this episode? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Deewana – Episode 19 & 20!

Ohkay so, these two episodes of Deewana were comparatively slow & didn’t offer much in regards to the development of the story. I really hope they don’t take things slow from now on & don’t compromise on the pace because such stories need to move on at a certain pace to keep the interest of the viewers alive. For the first time, I actually felt that the episodes were not ending & found a lot of scenes a bit too stretched & boring.

Falak & Mehru stayed in Lahore for a week but I don’t really understand why because they didn’t have any reason to be there for so long. Mehru gave Haris the answer he never expected & then Falak gave her some amazing memories to cherish for the rest of her life, so after that they should’ve returned because they are mature enough to know that their families must be worrying sick for them.

Shama has started to feel something odd about Falak & his entire family, also the sudden arrival of Shams left her bewildered but her mind was already pre-occupied with the thoughts about Mehru that she didn’t question him much. Husn Ara was just as clueless as Shama was but all she could advice Shama was to be patient. I somehow feel a lot more for Husn Ara because she is not only worried about Falak but she is concerned about Mehru too as she knows the reality of her son, she also knows that Agha could harm Falak & also, she knows how inappropriate it is for Falak to be with Mehru because he can develop feelings for Mehru which most certainly shouldn’t happen. Shama being a mother of Mehru obviously suffers a lot but being oblivious of Falak’s reality actually is a blessing in disguise for her, whereas when it comes to Husn Ara, that’s not the case as she has so much more to be afraid of.

Amtul & Tabrez went ahead with Haris’s wedding because Mehru’s arrival actually came as a shock to them too & they wanted to take some immediate measures that would close the doors of any reconciliation between Mehru & Haris. When I saw Amtul feeding negativity in Haris’s mind once again, I actually felt sorry for her because I felt that it was the only purpose of her life & it actually is sad to see someone so purposeless & blind. I actually liked the way Shama spoke to Amtul, it was a confidence that she gained after she learned about the fact that Mehru slapped Haris. It was actually good to see the sense of pride in Shama for the first time because what Mehru not only served as a closure to her but it empowered her mother emotionally too. Shama has always held her head high but for the first time, her words were backed by a strong stand that her daughter took for herself & for her entire family. Mehru decided to restore her dignity & pride but indirectly, it uplifted the morale of her mother too, which once again made me feel that Mehru was stronger than she actually thinks of herself to be.

I am not sure what was Shabnam trying to achieve when she called Kashaf. Yes, Shabnam did want Gaiti to get married to Haris but she knows that Gaiti was never into him & she already has started having feelings for Falak more, so Shabnam’s call to Kashaf seemed unjustified, however, the reaction of Kashaf that followed seemed justified because she had just learned that Haris was already married to his cousin & he had been lying to her all this while. Haris ran away because he was humiliated once again but unfortunately, this is what he deserves – getting insulted time & again by everyone around him because he lacks a backbone & also it was a karma that came back & bit him.

Falak & Mehru came back & got the welcome they both actually deserved for being missing for quite a considerable amount of time. Shama & Husn Ara’s reactions were justified & expected but what actually came as a shock was Mehru’s reaction to just a simple question that Husn Ara was entitled to ask. Falak’s presence in Mehru’s life has affected her more than Falak himself realizes, that is why Husn Ara straight away blamed him for what Mehru was going through. I am sure this is the time when Falak will realize how much he loves Mehru as he won’t be able to see her in pain.

Overall, these two episodes were strictly alright because they didn’t really offer much because where a few scenes seemed a bit repetitive, other few seemed stretched & never-ending. Anyways, the preview of the next episode actually looks exciting, looks like things will get complicated for Mehru & Falak & may be it will bring them closer to each other as well. Like always, the acting of all the actors was amazing in these episodes too & so was the direction, the only thing that put me off was the slow pace but I am sure things are about to get interesting in the episodes to come. Please share your thoughts about these episodes of Deewana.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Mein Sitara Season 2 – Episode 17

This was another flawless episode of Mein Sitara and the perfect start to this second season. The opening scene of this episode summed up Sitara’s journey from Surraya to Sitara. After her parents left her, she had Jharna’s support, love and guidance which she treasured more than anything else but because of her bad luck and a few mistakes she lost that forever. Even though Sitara did not stay in the film industry for too long but the few months she spent in the film industry taught her that she has talent and even after everything that happened, she managed to pick up the broken pieces of her life and tried her best to put them back together. She went out looking for work but this time around she does not have the kind of support Jharna and Farhad gave her, she is all alone and her background is going to be a big hindrance in her path. Also, the constant pressure from her father in particular is likely to disillusion her further as was evident from the preview of the next episode.

Sitara started off with looking for work, then she went to see Jharna but failed in doing both. Even though the odds are strongly against Sitara but in this episode she proved that she is still as strong and focused as she always was. Everyone in Sitara’s house is banking on her to earn a living because her father in particular was always someone who preferred shortcuts. The only reason her parents brought her back was so that she could earn for them. Sitara’s father’s proposal did not come as a surprise at all, he will make Sitara do anything it takes to earn money.

ms

All the wonderful characters we were introduced to in the beginning of this drama are now victims of fate more than anything else. None of them deserved to be so unhappy but the recent twists in the drama have made it even more interesting and I must say very realistic too. While most people view the life of people associated with this industry to be very charming and full of perks, the reality is that there are many women in particular like Sitara who are confronted with situations which are beyond their control. Sitara has been tagged ‘manhoos’ and her relationship with Jamal has also effected her reputation negatively therefore she will have to find someone who can support her. Sitara faced rejection everywhere she went but she has still not given up on her dream. Naseem Dil Ruba and Jamal continued to plot and plan like always, making sure that Sitara never gets to make a comeback.

Just like all the previous episodes of Mein Sitara, this one too made it very easy for me to relate to all the characters, their stories and most importantly their struggles. Jharna has lost everything, her status and her husband. Farhad has lost his senses and Sitara is lost in her own way. Everyone gave brilliant performances yet again but this episode belonged to Saba Qamar. Faiza Iftikhar has written every character and their stories realistically and the director has done complete justice to this amazing script. There wasn’t a single scene in tonight’s episode which seemed out of place or unnecessary. Mein Sitara is one of the most intelligently written and executed dramas on air right now which constantly gives you reasons to look forward to more excitement and drama. It also gives all the actors involved an opportunity to put their acting skills to good use. Pakistani drama industry is blessed with some amazing actors but unfortunately most of them like Mikaal Zulfiqar and Aisha Gul in particular do not always get the opportunity to showcase their talents because they most often become victims of typecasting.

ms

The writer and the director in my opinion have not only done the viewers a great service by taking a risk and experimenting but they have also done these actors a huge favor for choosing them for these roles. Mikaal Zulfiqar hasn’t stood out this much in any other role other than the one he played in Durr-e-Shahwar. Aisha Gul got noticed for the first time because of Jharna’s character and even Saba Qamar got the opportunity to play a character which has so many different shades.

The preview of the next episode showed that Sitara will end up doing something she never intended to because of a family emergency. Although all the tracks in this story are very interesting but Sitara’s journey has always been the major part of this drama and the most entertaining one too mostly because of the way all her feelings and thoughts are always shown so clearly in every episode. Mein Sitara continues to be one of those rare dramas which stays with you long after you’re done watching a certain episode.

How many of you watched this latest installment of Mein Sitara? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Arrest Warrants Issued For Ayyan

0

In March 2015, customs officials arrested supermodel Ayyan Ali at Islamabad airport, upon recovering $506,800 from her luggage. Ayyan later denied any role in money laundering. She was released from Adiala prison in Rawalpindi after spending almost four months in detention.

Today, a court in Rawalpindi issued arrest warrants for Ayyan in connection with the killing of a customs inspector who would have been a key prosecution witness in the money laundering case against her.

The court ordered police to arrest the accused immediately. Warrants have also been issued for others accused in the case, including customs superintendent Zargham and Dr Haroon.

images-33

Customs Inspector Chaudhry Ejaz Mahmood would have been the key prosecution witness in the money laundering case. Mahmood was in charge of the PIA cargo air freight unit (AFU) state warehouse at Benazir Bhutto International Airport in 2015 and was the person that took official custody of the currency recovered from Ayyan in March 2015. He was shot dead by two unidentified men last year.

The inspector’s wife told the police that some men threatened to kill Mahmood if he failed to make false entries in the official record to weaken the case against Ayyan and relieve her of the charges. Mahmood’s brother Chaudhry Riaz Afzal also recorded his statement before the police.

Ayyan was released but now, a Rawalpindi court has issued arrest warrants and according to the orders, Ayyan needs to be presented in the court within a month.

Shreya Goshal & Armaan Malik Contribute To Janaan’s Soundtrack

0

Janaan is a much anticipated movie all set to release on Eid-ul-Azha. The makers have worked hard on the soundtrack of the film. Ahmed Ali is the music director and Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman have also contributed to the soundtrack. Shreya Goshal is the most followed and sought-after female singer and she has lent her vocals for the soundtrack of Janaan. Along with her, the very talented Armaan Malik has also contributed to the soundtrack. This isn’t the first time a Pakistani film is featuring songs sung by Indian artists – in Bin Roye, Rekha Bhardwaj, Harshdeep Kaur and Ankit Tiwari lent their vocals.

The makers of Janaan insist that the film will be a positive and colourful representation of Pakhtun culture, and according to the producer and music director, the soundtrack will also reflect the same thing, although there is only one Pashto song. Ahmed Ali revealed, ”The background score is a mix of Pashto and western, to bring out the essence of the narrative.”

IMG_20160721_022826

The iconic poem, Reidi Gul (Poppy flower) penned by Ghani Khan is also part of the soundtrack.Reidi Gul has a spiritual impact, you see. It is rebellious and speaks of finding yourself amidst the crowd … you being unique. It also says that love always wins, which resonates in our story as the film is about love and family. Therefore, we have used the poem in a song for it connects to the film and our land.”

According to Imran Raza Kazmi, ”There are some things in the script that relate to Ghani’s poetry.”

IMG_20160721_023004

“It is purely a Pakistani story through which we aim to break stereotypes. I think the Pukhtuns are misunderstood. There are a lot of misconceptions about the people and we want to bring a truer, more beautiful picture of them to the larger Pakistani audience.”

About working with Indian composers and singers, Ahmed Ali said, ”It was great! A totally different experience because they brought something very unique to the table.”

Fawad Khan Becomes Manish Malhotra’s Showstopper

For the FDCI Indian Couture Week (ICW), India’s most successful fashion designer, Manish Malhotra chose Fawad Khan and Bollywood (and now Hollywood, too) diva Deepika Padukone as his showstoppers. About the film

About the film
Ishq Positive (عشق پازیٹیو) is an Urdu film produced in Lahore. It was under production for past two years.Wali Hamid Ali Khan and Noor Bukhari are playing the lead roles. Its trailer is released today while the film will be released on the 22nd July 2016.

The film was delayed due to multiple factors most important of which was the change of director. The film was started by Adeel PK (Pavez Kaleem) as the director who left it mid way over differences with Noor Bukhari the lead female artist of the film. Sangeeta took over as director afterwards but  she too left after few months. Finally Noor Bukhari herself completed the rest of the film. During the shooting of the film, the rumors of marriage of the lead pair Noor Bukhari and Wali Hamid Ali Khan also made headlines and are still in circulation neither admitted nor denied by the lead pair.

The hero, Wali Hamid Ali Khan is the son of the renown classical singer Hamid Ali Khan. Wali Hamid Ali Khan is also part of famous band Raga Boys, which he formed with his two brothers. Wali Hamid Ali Khan is also the first cousin of another leading singer Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.  Ishq Positive is the debut film of the Wali Hamid Ali Khan.

Noor Bukhari is making a come back to commercial cinema from this film. Ishq Positive will also feature Faria Bukhari in an important role of second heroine. Faria is the younger sister and the only sibling of Noor Bukhari. Faria has started her career as a child star in 1990s, with the most notable appearance in film Jo Darr Gaya Woh Marr Gaya in 1995 as the daughter of Nadeem and Atiqa Odho.

As evident from the trailer Noor Bukhari is playing the role of Rajjo (Razia) in some big influential landlord family of Punjab who runs away from her home (haveli) at the night of her wedding which results in the dialog Rajjo Bhaag Gayee. Coincidentally she meets the hero Wali Hamid Ali Khan and thus it starts their journey. How will it end, for that lets wait till 22nd July 2016.

Tum Kon Piya – Episode 17

This episode of Tum Kon Piya was extremely depressing and somewhat overdramatic at times. Elma’s mother in law and even her husband proved that they don’t even have an ounce of sympathy for Elma. I said this before and I feel the need to say it again, it would have been so much better if Zarbab wasn’t flirting with Javeria because now there is absolutely nothing good about his character. He is a complete loser who blamed his wife for his flirtation with Javeria. It was sad to see a girl like Elma wasting herself trying to please people who don’t and will never value her. Ramish continued to take a stand for Waqar Ali in front of his parents and now that he is gone, he has an even bigger responsibility on his shoulders. Someone needed to say all the things to Zarbab which Ramish said to him. Zarbab knew what he had done was very wrong therefore he had nothing to say in his defense, also, since he is so impressed by Ramish, he would have tolerated anything at all as long as it was coming from him. It seems like Ramish’s marriage isn’t going to take place after all.

Once again the fact that everyone related to Zarbab whether it is family or friends (Javeria) are out to destroy Elma stood out like a sore thumb. There was a time when Zarbab in his own cowardly way used to support Elma but now even that support is gone. Zarbab wants to stay out of the house for as long as he can since he has someone who is willing to give him company outside the house whenever he needs it. Although I am not too happy with this latest development but I must say that it is in line with Zarbab’s character. He is a coward who has always tried to run away from problems instead of confronting them. He is the oldest son who runs the house, if he had the guts to tell his mother where she was wrong, the whole household would have had a completely different set up. It goes to show that a son and husband’s responsibility is not limited to earning for his family members alone but he also needs to draw the line when someone is being unfair even if it is his own mother. Someone like Zarbab of course is incapable of taking up such a huge responsibility. Sharafat begum is clearly the supreme authority in that house and like a dictator she only looks after her own interests.

tkp

Sharafat begum found out about Elma’s father’s condition when Arif went to deliver the card but she hid the truth from Elma. The worst part was when she didn’t even let Zarbab tell Elma that her father had passed away. The preview of the next episode suggested that Elma asks Neha to move in with her. How can Elma forgive Sharafat Begum like this? I can’t imagine Elma living in that house now like nothing ever happened. Elma unfortunately has one thing in common with her husband – she too is incapable of taking a stand for herself. I hope there is a good explanation for Neha staying with Elma since staying with her other sister would have been a more logical thing to do since her mother in law is her khala as well. The preview of the next episode also suggested that Sunbal and Ramish might not get married after all – I really hope that Sunbal supports her brother’s decision otherwise this drama has two very foolish women who do not know what is good for them.

tkp

Waqar Ali’s funeral scenes were a little too dramatic for my liking. Elma’s sisters’ over emotional dialogues start getting annoying after a while. Elma’s illness has been relegated to the background for now. How will someone like Neha live in a house which is very different from her father’s house? Will her presence effect Elma’s position in the house in a good way?  How far will Javeria go and will Zarbab go along with everything she wants to do? Although Elma too is an ultimate bechari but there are definitely times when I truly feel for her. Ayeza makes this role tolerable (if not likeable) and the fact that every now and then we see Elma complaining make her more human.

Sultan, Biggest Bollywood Grosser Ever in Pakistan

Sultan is an Indian Bollywood film starring Salman Khan released in Pakistan on Eidul Fitr on 6th July 2016. Bollywood films are widely viewed in Pakistan especially the one starring any of the Bollywood’s Khan.

Following the rule of demand and supply, due to its high demand the film was supplied with the maximum number of shows through out Pakistan in the provinces of Sindh, Punjab and the federal capital Islamabad which is the main circuit for the Bollywood films. The film is also released in Balochistan (Quetta) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar), where normally Indian Bollywood and locally made Urdu films are not released and only Pashto films are released.

Two Urdu films Blind Love and Swaal 700 Crore Dollar Ka (SSCDK) were announced to be released on Eidul Fitr, however seeing the preference of cinema owners (also the cine goers) the producers of Blind Love had delayed their film while the other film SSCDK was given very few shows by the cinema owners and thus it paved the way for maximum number of shows reserved to Bollywood’s Sultan.

The cine goers has not disappointed the cinema owners and appeared in huge numbers to prove that cinema owners were right in preferring Sultan over any other film. As expected the film has earned huge on all the three Eid Days, but its earnings have exceeded all the expectations. The film has crossed the 10 crore mark in just three days, the fastest for any film on Pakistani box office. After breaking the all time record of highest weekend collections the film has also kicked out many previous records one by one. The most prominent record it has made is of the highest ever grossing Indian Bollywood film in Pakistan.

On Friday 15th July 2016 the collections of the film reached 25.08 crore rupees, surpassing the previous record of 25.05 crore of Dhoom 3 released in 2013. (Source: http://boxofficedetail.com/view_post.php?value=6976). Till Sunday 17th July 2016, the film has collected 28 crore rupees and is still pulling crowds to the cinemas. Seeing all this it is favorable to say that it will be the first Indian Bollywood film to cross the landmark of 30 crore rupees before the upcoming weekend (Source: http://boxofficedetail.com/view_post.php?value=6978).

The top all time opening weekends in Pakistan are as follows with the distributor names in (parenthesis), Sultan leads all the films by huge margins. App Ke Liye – Episode 02!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of App Ke Liye didn’t offer much but it established the grounds for what is yet to come. May be because the characters & the situations have been there, seen that written all over them, that’s why nothing seems promising at this stage of the drama even though it is quite early to form an opinion about it, but sadly, the typicality is making it look a bit too predictable but I hope the characters give us something to look forward to in the episodes that are yet to come.

Arsalan proved that he is a wuss, that’s why like I predicted in the last review, he ended up asking Washma for help as he knew that that his decision will cause a dent in his sister’s life. He knew that Washma was the only person who could help him in this situation as she was mature enough to understand his predicament, despite being engaged to him. It was actually quite bad to see Washma facing such a situation because she was at a happy place in this relationship. I must say, all the emotions of Washma were conveyed brilliantly, like she went from being ecstatic to shocked to furious to disappointed in no time & then eventually, she bounced back in a jiffy too as she realized that what Arsalan said made sense because he wasn’t in love with her, so there was no point that this marriage would bring happiness to either of them.

Maryam continued to spew venom against Washma because like any typical bhabhi, she deems her brother as the innocent goat & sees Washma as a cunning predator. It didn’t take her a second to accept that Washma was dating someone else, whereas she should’ve been sure that Washma could never two-time her brother as she never went out with him in the first place. Washma might be adventurous & boisterous but so far she has always followed a strict routine when it comes to her daily life, so I am sure she never did something to give her brother & his wife a reason to doubt her!

Shaheer ended up divorcing his wife because his sister told him to. The conversation that followed actually seemed a bit unconvincing because Shaheer happens to be a mature & calculative person, I know he was emotionally week at that moment but like they suggested, this entire course of divorce was being stretched for an year or so, so I don’t think there was anything left in this for Shaheer to be emotionally attached to, which made him so reckless to confess that he was getting married in a week’s time only to get back at his ex-wife because she suggested that she was ready to move on in her life too.

Nishat was over the moon at the news of Shaheer’s divorce because she actually scored a win against Abeera. It is obvious that she was the one who didn’t let Abeera settle in her marital life but I am sure she doesn’t know what future has in store for her. I don’t understand why Nishat is so over-possessive about her brother, so much so that she doesn’t want to share him, even with his spouse? What good does it do to her?

Anyways, the note at which the episode ended actually was what this entire episode set the base for. Shaheer & Washma came across each other at such a time when they both hit the rock bottom & were emotionally shattered. The divorce actually took a toll on Shaheer more than expected & then Washma gave him the details of her life too, in order to let him know that there was always another way to deal with such painful things too. I like Washma’s approach on life, she is care-free yet she is emotionally so strong that she knows she can overcome any such obstacle that comes her way, which is actually refreshing to see.

Overall, this episode was decent but what I liked the most was the focus on Washma’s side of the story. Arij Fatima acted brilliantly especially in the scene where Washma gives Arsalan a piece of her mind after he tells her about Saniya, I am sure it wasn’t an easy thing to do since it was a continuous scene which had to be done in one take, at times even Asad Siddique fell flat there but Arij Fatima carried it brilliantly. I hope that the episodes that are yet to come give us something that will actually make us look forward to the entire journey. Please share your thoughts about this episode of App Ke Liye!

Besharam – Episode 11!

Ohkay so, this episode of Besharam was amaaaaaazing. I loved the note at which it began & like I always say, the note at which it ended left me looking forward to what is yet to come. I am really glad that the writer came up with such a brilliant script but what makes me even happier is the way the director has executed it. Everything in this drama, be it dialogues, acting, scenes, characters, situations, direction & editing is on-point & you just can’t fault it.

Haider actually has started expecting more from Mishail, that is why when she showed up a bit late, he was disappointed. It’s not that he wants her to serve him but it was just a longing that he felt for her presence around him. I love how they both come clean in every single situation, Mishail didn’t think twice before telling him the truth that she wanted to come earlier but it was his mother who didn’t allow that to happen & also she told him about what she heard his mother saying. Haider knows that Mishi is putting up with a lot & for that, he feels thankful & burdened at the same time too because he knows that Mishi doesn’t deserve this but the way she copes up with everything actually shows her determination of making this marriage work.

Haider heard when Mishail spoke to her mother on the phone, that is why, that conversation forced him to say what he didn’t want to. Despite all the efforts that Mishi is making, Haider feels that she is not made for this & he doesn’t understand why she is settling for the life Haider has offered her so far, that is why after thinking things through, he told Mishail to return to her home, her lifestyle where things won’t be so hard on her. The way the writer has developed the understanding between these characters is amazing, it’s like even though they both don’t really talk much, they know exactly what their shortcomings are & what the other person might be feeling or going through because of that.

I am glad that Mishail showed up at the right time & rescued Saba from the evil intentions of that photographer but what made me furious was the way Saba lied in front of her father to save her sorry being. I knew she will stir some trouble for Mishail & that is going to happen now because Sikandar will barge into Khadija’s home with a bag full of accusations on Mishail for being a bad influence on his daughter. If only parents of girls like these would think of taming their own spoiled children before being judgmental about others & blaming them too. I really hope when Sikandar shows up, Mishail is present at that point but I think Mishail will be with her mother & sadly, Sikandar will get to spew the venom against her.

It is actually nice to see how Humna has started showing acceptance towards Mishail & not only that, she has also started acknowledging the fact that Mishail is now their family member & she is Haider’s wife. I know Khadija does sound unreasonable at times but it is good how she often notices the gestures that Mishail does, it makes her reactions seem natural & I am sure it won’t be too long when she will wholeheartedly accept Mishail as a part of her family. I liked how despite knowing that Khadija didn’t want Mishail to be in the hospital, Mishail took charge of the situation, arranged a ride for Humna & Khadija & also decided to stay back with Haider, it would’ve made Khadija realize that Mishail is serious about this relationship & she is not mucking around!

Sophie & Sara’s scenes were fillers & I most certainly don’t mind that but I was surprised when Mishail decided to show up at Sara’s place & not only that, she agreed for an overnight stay too, especially when she knew that Haider might need her. I think this was the time when Mishail should’ve been with Haider as they both could’ve put this time to good use to understand each other even better but not sure how Haider will react to this. It was actually quite nice to see how Haider was regretting what he said to Mishail about leaving & he also knew that if he keeps on insisting, she might actually leave!!!

Overall, this episode was amazing & I am definitely looking forward to more. I must say, Saba Qamar looks absolutely pretty & it is good to see how she has polished herself over these years. I think the makeup artists have done a wonderful job too where they glam her up but keep her look a tad bit natural too. I must say what I love the most about this drama is the way the relationship of Mishail & Haider is developing. All these years when I watched the dramas & saw misunderstandings developing between the couples due to communication gap, I would always think why the characters don’t convey their feelings & cover the events in their words properly, so, I am relieved to see that Mishail & Haider have everything apart from communication gap which is a bonus. I actually feel a sense of relief when I see both of them conversing with each other with honesty & clarity, because it doesn’t leave a room for a misunderstanding to develop. I thank the writer for giving us such amazing characters that are all about honesty & make the straight-forward people look good! Also, I must will thank the director for adding that touch of reality in all the situations because it makes us connect to everything immediately, like the comment that Sikandar passed about Shakira wearing a Lehanga on her way to hospital & also the way Haider looked at Muneer trying to tell him that he only wanted to be with Mishail, these little things somehow complete the situations & make them seem very real, which I love. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this amazing episode of Besharam. :)

Zara Yaad Kar – Episode 19!

Ohkay so, this episode of Zara Yaad Kar was good. It showed some developments but I feel it’s about time that they should move the story forward at a good pace & reach to the conclusion soon because a few of the situations have started to seem repetitive & don’t really contribute in the progress of the story.

Uzma was definitely having a hard time after Haadi left because she has gotten used to the idea of having him around. When she entered his room, she got overwhelmed because everything in that room reminded her of him. Even Ikhtiyaar Sahab felt the void that came along Haadi’s departure. Ikhtiyaar Sahab actually knows the reason why Uzma took this decision & he respects that, which is actually good to see. A father like Ikhtiyaar is a rarity too because when he learned that Uzma liked Haadi, he gave her his consent but when he understood that the emotional havoc in Haadi’s life was affecting Uzma, he allowed her to do what she deemed fit. I like the confidence Ikhtiyaar Sahab has in his daughter because he trusts her & more than that, he has a complete faith in his wife’s upbringing.

I am not sure if I understood Aneesa this time around. She is well aware of how everything that Mahnoor is doing will haunt Haadi in the future, but she has decided to go with the flow & let Mahnoor take charge of the situation. I think for once, in stead of being a mother of Mahnoor, Aneesa should’ve thought about Haadi as his aunt. Yes, she did try to make him cautious of what he might feel in the future but the way she showed her Mahnoor’s jewelry & the wrist watch that she had bought for him made me feel that unwillingly & unconsciously, she was pressurizing Haadi to accept Mahnoor no matter what. I do like her character a lot & I like her profound thoughts & sayings, but I am not sure if her approach of becoming a mere spectator in this entire situation is right.

Just when I think that Mahnoor can’t surprise me more, she hits a new low & stoops to a lower level. Mahnoor’s candidness with her boss actually made me feel disgusted. For the first time, I strongly felt that Mahnoor was mentally sick because no girl can be so shameless & selfish. She was over the moon with the amount her boss paid for the things she bought in one go & even before getting married & divorced, she was concerned if she’ll have to return those gifts to him. The way Mahnoor seemed happy & content with everything that her boss had planned for them made me dislike her even more because more than him, she seemed to be in a hurry of getting married to him as she was definitely ecstatic about the flight that she had to catch. Seriously, I think I will run out of words while describing her character & I don’t think anything that she will go through will make me feel for her. Mahnoor’s character has started to irritate me I it will be harder to review her bits in the episodes to come!

Gaiti has won the elections & Mehtab has returned. His thoughts about education & power showed how our politicians only believe in ruling the people without empowering themselves with the education first. Gaiti is different but I am not sure if she’ll be able to abide by her principles under Mehtab’s supervision because obviously, Mehtab will treat Gaiti as just a face of his party but he will make sure that in the end, he is the one who does the decision making!

Haadi went to Uzma again like a loser. What was Haadi expecting? Everything will be fun & games & Mahnoor will come back to him & they will start living in some lala-land? Why was he so surprised that he was actually feeling a pain. I liked how just in one sentence Uzma told him what he should do. He claims to love Mahnoor with all his heart, so she told him to let his heart guide him the next time because it is his heart that is forcing him to put up with everything that Mahnoor is throwing at him & he doesn’t deserve any sympathy because he is responsible for putting himself in this situation. I must say, over the time I have developed a liking for Uzma’s character because she is a girl who has a character & more than that, has a control over her mind & heart.

Well, the episode ended at a perfect note. Mahnoor got what she deserved & I hope this is not the end of it. She needs a reality check & she needs a lot of it to wake up & smell the coffee that not everything revolves around her & she is not going to be the center of everyone’s universe. Haadi might be a loser but the others have some spine to save what belongs to them & not everyone is going to allow her to play with their lives. Waqar made the entry at the right time & I guess now Mahnoor will forget everything about Haadi & her love for him & will happily get married to Waqar, but I really hope it’s not the end of her sufferings!!! Hamza Ali Abbasi’s Facebook Account Deactivated

Hamza Ali Abbasi is an ardent advocate of freedom of speech and he doesn’t mince his words while sharing his views on various political, religious and social issues.

Hamza Ali Abbasi shared on Twitter that his Facebook account got deactivated just because he chose to speak about the Kashmir situation. He shared a snapshot to show that Facebook didn’t allow him to talk about the plight of Kashmiris. IMG_20160719_200241 IMG_20160719_200304 IMG_20160719_200740

This isn’t the first time that Facebook’s “community standards” stopped him from posting what didn’t sit well with them. Last year, Hamza Ali Abbasi’s status regarding the Charlie Hebdo attack was removed. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg got involved and asked Justin Osofsky, the Vice President, to look into the matter. It was only then that Osofsky admitted it was a mistake to remove Hamza Abbasi’s status and apologized for the mistake.

Let’s see what happens this time.

This film is it. Watch it for the beautiful cinematography, the poetic songs, unforgettable dialogues, Waheeda Rahman … watch it for Guru Dutt!

The Lion King (1994)

Produced by Walt Disney

The Lion King is cartoon royalty!

Trainspotting (1996)

Directed by Danny Boyle, starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner

Just. Watch. It.

Blue Jasmine (2013)

images-39

Written, directed by Woody Allen and starring Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett makes it all look so easy; she’s such a fine actor. Blue Jasmine is one of Allen’s best works.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

images-38

Directed by Michel Gondry and starring Jim Carrey Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood

It’s a strange thing … to watch a film based on an unreal concept that feels so close to home, so real. In the film, Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are at their charming best.

Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

images-37

Directed by Robert Benton and starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep

Personally, I enjoy watching the first works of artists. This is Meryl Streep’s first film, but since it’s the majesty herself, she was perfect even in her first film. Dustin Hoffman and the boy who played the child are also brilliant.

The Godfather (1972)

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino

It’s underrated. No, I’m serious. It is.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson

It is the coolest gangster film! The chemistry between the cast members is insane.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

images-26

Directed by David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

It’s so much more than just a rom-com. The direction and acting are flawless. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are perfect in it.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Directed by Gil Junger, adapted from Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, starring Heath Ledger.

Yes. Please watch it. It’s one of the best teenybopper films. The writing is great, acting even better and it also has Heath Ledger in it.

Mann Mayal – Episode 26

The opening scene of this episode ‘shadi karo gay mujh se’  guaranteed that this episode was going to give all of us a lot to laugh about and just like always Mann Mayal delivered this time around too. Not much made sense and watching these top rated actors going along with this senseless script is no longer shocking but actually hilarious. Who did they think they were fooling?? Maya Ali’s acting gets worse with every passing episode especially when she is trying her best to prove that there never was and never will be another bechari like Mannu.

mannu1

The story of this play has gone back to being a love story! Mannu still loves Salahuddin – surprise surprise and Salahuddin claims he loved Mannu ever since he was a baby (bachpan??) Jeena was just a phase which has passed. Mannu was the flavor of the day today. Salahuddin’s parents went from being the moral police to the nicest people around. This sudden change in attitude was just plain ridiculous! Aunty who was doing everything in her power to make Mannu’s life hell feels more secure now that her husband assured her in the previous episode (not sure when) that Mannu and Salahuddin had no such intentions. The characters in this drama take a U-turn which is backed by the most childish reasons.

jeena

The reference to Beauty and The Beast was hilarious – was the beauty married and I don’t remember her having 2 kids and the story definitely wasn’t this twisted! Just like that everything is back to square one – Mannu and Salahuddin love each other and the only problem now is convincing Salahuddin’s parents – so everyone is requested to forget everything else that happened in the previous 10 episodes or so!

salahuddin

Jeena’s character never made sense right from day one but the way Jamil’s character has been changed into that of a desperate man who will leave his wife, kids and betray Salahuddin just to please Jeena is nonsensical. Someone who was practical and very intelligent has lost all his problem solving capabilities and can’t even see what is going on. How could these actors even go along with all this – that was all I was wondering while watching this episode. I expect anything from the writer now but didn’t expect all this from the director and the actors involved.

mannu

The scene in which Mannu sits down to pray for her father but ends up having a conversation with Salahuddin looked like an essay on Pyare Aba!!! Jeena and Jamil’s scenes were just plain disgusting.

jamil

How many of you watched this latest installment? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Promotion Of Film Janaan

0

Filmmakers attach a great deal of importance to the promotion of their films. The most successfully (and enthusiastically) promoted Pakistani film was definitely Ho Mann Jahan – the Shakar Wandaan dubsmashes were everywhereeee.

Janan is all set to release on September 13 on the occasion of Eid ul Azha. With less than two months left before the release of the much anticipated film, it’s time to promote the film. Luckily for team Janaan, the film is co-produced by Munir Hassan who is behind the popular food franchise, Pepe’s Piri Piri Group which happens to be a sponsor of the Arjit Singh shows in the UK.

Recently, Armeena Khan and Bilal Ashraf were seen promoting their upcoming film at Arjit Singh’s concert.

The film will be released by ARY Films in Pakistan and B4U Pictures internationally.

Interview With Zainab Qayyum

0

Zainab Qayyum, better known as ZQ, is a Pakistani model, host and actress. She has a vivacious personality. In a recent interview with Mag The Weekly, she talked about her personal life, career and future plans.

Talking about his childhood, ‘‘I had a super, shiny, happy, secure childhood. I loved playing netball, tennis and swimming, oonch neech, baraf paani – the list of my childhood travails is endless.”

ZQ speaks highly of her mother. ‘‘My dad passed away when I was nine, so it’s been my mom and I ever since. She is my best friend, toughest critic and anchor. In fact when I decided that I wanted to model at the age of 17 my mom had only one condition and that was to maintain my grades.I dedicated my Award for Best Model that I won in 2004 to my mom.”

Zainab20Qayyum2023-46-1442942210

Talking about her entry into the world of fashion and modelling, “It’s a typical ugly duckling/ fairytale kind of story. In 1991, Vinny (Vaneeza Ahmed) asked me to help backstage for her fashion show; she ran short of models and told me I would go on the ramp. Neelofer Shahid (Meeras) whose daughter was my college friend, saw me at the show and asked me to do my very first shoot for Visage with Ather Shahzad.” She retired at the age of 33 and that too at the peak of her career but she is happy that she made the right decision at the time.

She hosted the show, Maachis on HUM TV. “As a host, after Maachis, I still haven’t gotten the perfect talk show I would like to take on. My dream is to host one which is a combo of Ellen DeGeneres and Aamir Khan’s shows.”

zainab-qayyum-4-582

ZQ got married at the peak of her career but it didn’t work out. ”It’s an open fact that it didn’t work out. As two adults we divorced amicably and to date are still good friends. What I did learn from the experience is that the grass will always be greener on the other side. Singles die to get married while the married crave the freedom which the singles have. But now if it’s meant to happen again, it will not be an impulsive act as before.”

ZQ has Masters degree in English Literature and she is passionate about becoming a writer. She shared that she has finished writing her debut novel. More power to her!

Kathputli – Episode 06!

Ohkay so, surprisingly, even though I know the theme of the drama is quite depressing, I really like how so far the director has treated it & more than that, I like how the writer has made sure that the message is conveyed through. The pace of the drama has been quite good so far & even the preview of the next episode promised a lot but I am dreading that they will start taking things way too slowly once the 10th episode mark will be crossed. I hope the director ends it just as intelligently as he has tackled this script so far & more than that at a perfect time as well.

Even though Ahad’s friend didn’t want to get involved in such a complicated matter, he indirectly helped Ahad & Mehru more than they could have thought of. Zaid brought in Sonia, a lawyer & a social activist who ran an NGO & who decided to bring Ahad & Mehru out of their misery because she knew that the police was just making a mountain out of molehill. At first, when Ahad’s friend Zaid told him to lie about everything, I had my doubts about Sonia that she might be one of those who only believed in helping people in only those cases where things & the truth were tweaked according to her taste because Zaid made sure Ahad lied & also when Sonia came in contact with Mehru, she chose not to believe her side of the story because it wasn’t as colorful as she would’ve liked it to be, but as the episode progressed my doubts subsided because Sonia dealt with this entire matter logically & made it clear that she only wanted to help Ahad & Mehru.

Ehtasham & Hassam are both despicable. I would’ve liked if at least one of the brothers had a soft spot in their hearts for Mehru but both of them are the same where they just wanted to get rid of Mehru by hook or by crook. Ehtashaam knows his brother a little too well, that’s why he didn’t keep a secret & told him everything that he had actually planned for Mehru, where he just wanted to get over with the funeral rites & then wanted to kill her to turn her lie into a reality. It was actually quite disgusting how Ehtashaam thought that Mehru was is the only one who has to bear the burden of family’s dignity & didn’t even think for a second that his sister was in jail, among so many unknown men who could actually harass & violate her. (elcpinellas.org) Ehtasham’s concept of dignity & respect are quite twisted because what he says at one hand ends up contradicting what he does at the other. Ehtasham made a deal with the policeman that he will bring Mehru & Ahad out of jail to some remote area where Ehtasham will kill both of them himself, so much for dignity & pride, eh! It was actually quite sad to see that even Hassam was perfectly fine with the idea of his sister’s death like that, without even thinking for a second that she could actually be innocent & the police might’ve mistook the entire situation.

Sonia played her part really well & she knew that the police’s version of Mehru & Ahad’s story wasn’t accurate & she also knew that the police inspector might’ve made a pact with Mehru’s family as the way he was dealing with this case off the record wasn’t justified & showed exactly what he was being told to do by someone else. When Sonia saw that the police inspector didn’t want things to go to court, that is when she understood the entire game that was being played against Mehru & Ahad as then could foresee what their fate could be. It was good that Saira came to Mehru’s rescue & met the right person at a right time because she ended up saving Mehru’s life. It is actually nice to see that there’s someone at least who thinks rationally & doesn’t mind taking a step in the right direction against all the odds. Even though Mehru didn’t want to go with Sonia but when she heard Saira’s name, she knew that she was in right hands & now things might be alright.

Overall, it was a good episode because all the things that the writer wanted to show are being conveyed properly without glorifying the situation & without commercializing it too. Throughout the episode, I liked how things were kept realistic & relatively simple otherwise if it wasn’t depicted like that, we wouldn’t have felt the misery of Mehru especially. I am glad that the director chose to give such a script a right treatment because there’s a message in it that needs to be conveyed. I just hope that the drama progresses with the same pace & ends at the right time because the dragging will only compromise the purpose of this drama & might as well defeat that purpose too. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Kathputli.

Mor Mahal – Episode 11!

0

Mor Mahal is a story that exemplifies how things roll & get ruined just on the basis of communication gap. Ever since the drama has begun, there’s everything that happens between the characters except communication & this is what happened in this episode too. I hate to say but this drama is turning out to be a disappointment with each passing episode because there’s no substance in the characters nor the situations.

I actually giggled when I saw Asif Jahan dressed appropriate for a fancy dress competition, it showed that he put in a lot of effort & a lot of thought went into his looks & appearance whereas he forgot that he had a stolen baby to take care of too. I think the kidnapping of Jamshed hasn’t been tackled properly because Asif Jahan made a promise to Surraiya that he would do everything to find him & ever since, he has worried about everything but Jamshed. It was only Surraiya who took things in her hands & protested, blaming Badshah Begum & Farrukh Zaad for the kidnapping of her son. Chalo, at least there was someone who was worried about that little fellow otherwise, the one who should actually be worried for him is too busy dressing up!!!

Dilawar Khan died, boo hoo, but are we supposed to feel for him as much as Asif Jahan felt because he was just introduced as an adviser to him, but seeing how the entire episode got dedicated to him left me confused. All I know is that no one in Asif Jahan’s family held a high opinion of Dilawar Khan, so not really sure if he deserved this much coverage. Also, I didn’t feel much for him because all this while, seeing Asif Jahan crying buckets for Dilawar seemed distasteful, especially because there were no efforts being made by him to find Jamshed, his new born that was kidnapped probably weeks ago, which should’ve been his priority but seems like Asif Jahan suffers from short term memory loss! I feel the chronology of the events isn’t right in Mor Mahal!!!

Taimur returned victorious, where Farrukh Zaad was ecstatic, Badshah Begum felt defeated. I hated the way Badshah Begum spoke about Taimur’s death, just because Akhtari reminded her that if Taimur becomes the ruler, Farrukh Zaad will have an upper hand over her. I guess Badshah Begum needs to understand that everything has a certain time limit & a date of expiry, it’s not like she is going to live forever, that she wishes to maintain her status by wishing to eliminate Taimur from everyone’s life. Also, being a mother of Asif Jahan, she has been a mother of the ruler for quite some time now, so, she should back out & let Farrukh Zaad taste her son’s success, what’s the point of waging a war against her own flesh & blood & hating him so much only because of the fact that she’s not on good terms with her daughter in law.

I actually find it funny that a man of Asif Jahan’s stature turns into bheegi billi in front of the ladies of his house & gets treated worse. Asif Jahan said that the ladies have no say in the matters of the state but it doesn’t seem to be that case, because when Taimur was fighting a battle with Shujat, both Badshah Begum & Farrukh Zaad played their part too where the former told Dilawar to kill Taimur & the latter told her brother to swoop in to protect her son. Also, Asif Jahan vigilantly pays heed to Shahista’s advises too, so when does his brain work or when does he put it to good use because seems like he forgets that he’s the ruler & he has the authority over everything!

Like I said in the last review, I will say that again, the communication gap forced Asif Jahan to get Taimur arrested because he assumed that it was Taimur who killed Dilawar Khan & then the same communication gap created a rift between him & his wife too. I actually didn’t think that Asif Jahan will be so insecure & will be such a coward that just one win by his son will make him dubious of his intentions & will force him to question his son’s loyalty. Just because Asif Jahan heard a few guys say that Taimur might end up killing him for the sake of throne, he got him arrested & smirked at his decision thinking that he scored a big win against his wife & his son!?!?! LOL!

Anyways, not sure what to expect because the preview of the next episode once again told that the communication gap will be stronger & will once again play a part in this drama. Looks like Akhtari will finally find out that Banki is posing to be Meher Bano, I actually would like to see how Badshah Begum will realize that it was her laziness that allowed all that to happen right under her nose as she didn’t bother visiting her favorite bahu once in all these months! Also, I must say that even though I like all the sets, I feel they needed more variety for filming this drama as it looks like all the characters keep to & froing within 2 – 3 rooms which makes everything looks tedious & yes, I do understand that they have tried to keep things realistic by showing us the natural & dull lighting to give feel of that era but please, bright karain isay, bright karainnnn!!!! Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Mor Mahal.
