Just being careful.” The following the statement shows that no matter what people say about Mathira, deep inside she is a very sensitive person.

Mathira told the newspaper that her wedding had taken place in Pakistan. She said, “I don’t believe in 9 lakh ka gharara aur 50 lakh ki jewellery, 50 log ko bulao aur 100 TV channels ko … that’s where trouble starts and how marriages end.”

Mathira has disclosed the news now so the media will be after her now, how will she respond to the media? To this her reply was, “Shadi kar li gunah nahi kiya. When we are ready we will come and face the camera. I will not allow anyone to comment on my personal life.”

Is Mathira really married or is this another publicity stunt?

Laa – Episode 11

0

This was another exciting and happening episode of Laa which made up for the slow and disappointing episode of last week. The pace of the show along with a different storyline sets this drama apart from rest of the plays that are currently on air. The story is unfolding at a really good pace with every passing episode. Although, I was a little taken aback and disappointed with the developments in the last episode maybe because I was expecting something completely different but the fact is that this was the best way to take the story forward. Daniyal is dealing with murderers so he can’t just make them understand things the way he could have if Dilawar and his mother did not have so much on stake. Dai Maa will do anything to get hold of the Pir’s gaddi and jaidad, she tried to get Daniyal killed once and she will do anything to get him killed now too.

Naimat Khan was the one who brought Daniyal to his adoptive parents all these years back, which means they knew about Naimat Khan all along. Daniyal tells Hina that he is looking for his mother and for a little while Daniyal reminded Hina of her son. Hina also told Daniyal that Laila did not consider him just a friend but she was in love with him – that explains a lot! The only reason Laila put her life in danger for someone she had known only for a month or so was because she loved him. Dilawar proved that he isn’t such a chooza seth after all; he planned to kill Daniyal while he was on his way to the court but Naimat Khan who for very good reasons does not believe in the justice system decided to “rescue” Daniyal before Dilawar could harm him. I am glad that we were not shown the scene in which Naimat Khan’s men took Daniyal with them from the police because that scene would not have been any good unless it was very well directed.

Untitled

I was waiting for Daniyal and Naina to meet for the past so many episodes but tonight when they finally met somehow the chemistry between them was just not the same. Sadia Khan’s acting was at its worst in that particular scene. That scene however was very significant because it gave Daniyal hope. Daniyal told Naina that Dilawar killed Laila and the only reason he is not telling anyone that is that he does not want Naina’s husband-to-be to be behind bars. The logic didn’t quite click with me because why would Daniyal want Naina to marry someone like Dilawar in the first place. Naina told Daniyal that she didn’t want to marry Dilawar which meant that he did not need to save him and which also meant that Daniyal and Naina could get married now. Dilawar saw the tape of the meeting between Naina and Daniyal and that is when he decided to take more aggressive measures.

Khalid Malik deserves tons of appreciation for playing Dilawar’s character with perfection. He depicted his anger and frustration in tonight’s episode so aptly. Mikaal Zulfiqar has been spot on as Daniyal too. The only weak link in the play is Sadia Khan. The preview of the next episode looked very enticing although I do think that it revealed a little more than it should have. Naina will tell Hina the truth about Daniyal’s identity in the next episode and I can only wonder where things will go from there. Looking forward to another exciting episode of Laa!

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Pakistani actors who worked in Bollywood

0

India is our eastern neighboring country, and has a thriving film industry known as Bollywood. Both Pakistan and India got independence from Britian in 1947, after which the local film industry in Pakistan also flourished producing many notable artists, musicians, singers. Indians films have always been popular and followed in Pakistan, but in past 67 years very few Pakistani actors have worked in Indian films. As compared to actors Pakistani singers/musicians have been more successful in India.

This article is a compilation of Pakistani actors who acted in Indian films. Interestingly the first such incident was in 1980’s more than three decades after independence.  Till 1980’s Pakistani Urdu and regional cinema of Punjabi and Pushto was booming. But in 1980’s Urdu cinema gradually faded while regional cinema continued its progress.

From 1977 – 1988 Pakistan was ruled by dictator General Ziaul Haq, during his reign Pakistan enjoyed very warm relations with neighboring India. Though Ziaul Haq put many restrictions on Urdu films but he has close friendships with many Pakistani and indian actors. Many Indian artists like Shatrughun Sinha and Dilip Kumar visited Pakistan during his reign, where they warmly welcomed at President House. General Ziaul Haq also encouraged leading Pakistani actors to work in Indian films, a move he thought to bring two countries even more closer. There were also many regular bilateral cricket series played during Zia’s era.

So then in 1980’s any such incident where a Pakistani actor has worked in an Indian film was a normal thing and none of the actors was ever questioned for loyalty or patriotism. Instead it was termed as good will gesture while the artists were termed as goodwill ambassadors.

Salma Agha
Salma Agha is basically a british national of Pakistani and Indian origin. Her father Agha Liaqut was a trader and mother Zareena Agha had also worked in Indian films in 1950’s. Salma Agha’s aunt (khala) Shaheena Ghaznavi had also worked in few Pakistani films in 1950’s. Salma is brought up in London and she rose to fame from her first superhit Bollywood film named Nikaah in 1981. Salma also provided vocals for the film and also won Filmfare award for best singer in Nikaah. Throughout 1980’s Salma continued working in Indian films. In mid 1980’s Salma came to Pakistan to work in Pakistani films as singer and actor.

Nadeem
Nadeem is undoubtedly super star of Urdu cinema of Pakistan.  He ruled the Urdu cinema for more than three decades.  Following warm relations of Indian and Pakistani as a goodwill gesture in 1986 Nadeem was perhaps the first ever Pakistani national to work in an Indian film. He appeared in a negative role in Indian film named Door Desh where Raj Babbar was the main protaganist. To this date, it is the only bollywood film of Nadeem.

nadeem

Muhammad Ali and Zeba
Muhammad Ali and Zeba, a premiere couple of Pakistani film scene also worked together in an Indian film in 1989 named Clerk. Muhammad Ali has personal terms with many politicians indcluding former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He even served two months in jail for supporting Bhutto under Ziaul Haq regime in late 70’s. But gradually the bitterness faded and Ziaul Haq and Muhammad Ali became friends. Muhammd Ali also has warm relations with many Indian artists who use to stay at his home in Lahore during visit to Pakistan.

On personal interest of Ziaul Haq, Muhammad Ali and Zeba agreed to work in film Clerk directed by Manoj Kumar who was also a friend of Muhammad Ali.  Clerk has some big names like Rekha, Manoj Kumar, Ashok Kumar but before its release General Ziaul Haq passed away in a plane crash in August 1988. To everybody’s surprise Muhammad Ali and Zeba had a very less screen time  with minor roles in Clerk and both of them were wasted in this movie. Muhammad Ali expressed his discontent at his closest friend Manoj Kumar for cutting short his role in the movie.

MA Zeba

Talat Hussain
Talat Hussain a very fine artist known for his examplary acting also played a supporting role in one Indian film. In Pakistan Talat Hussain has worked in both films and television, though he is more known for his work on television. Talat Hussain appeared as a lawyer in Indian film Souten ki Beti in 1989.

Talat Hussain

Zeba Bakhtiyar
Zeba a pretty face hails from an influential family of Pakistan. Her father Yahya Bakhtyar a prominent lawyer also served as Attorney General of Pakistan and was leading lawyer of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for famous Kasuri Murder case. Yahya Bakhtyar was married to a western lady named Eva Bakhtyar, so the family has dual nationality. Apart from Pakistani nationality, Zeba Bakhtiyar also holds a foreign nationality.

Zeba first appeared in a long play Anarkali in 1989 on television and was applauded more for her beauty rather than acting skills. Zeba Bakhtyar first appeared in Indian film Hinna opposite Rishi Kapoor in 1991 which was produced by legendary Indian artist Raj Kapoor. Hinna was successful, and afterwards Zeba also worked in few other Indian films.

Till Zeba Bakhtiyar, the response of Pakistani press and public was quite favorable towards Indian films starring Pakistani artists. Infact Hinna was also widely viewed and appreciated in Pakistan on VCR on video tapes.

zeba bakhtyar

Mohsin Khan
Mohsin Khan is a famous cricketer who married indian artist Reena Roy in 1980’s and migrated to Mumbai where he also started his acting career by appearing in many Indian films. Batwaara in 1989 was perhaps his first movie. After breakup with Reena Roy, Mohsin came back to Pakistan and worked in many local films.

Somy Ali

Her father was Pakistani so she can be termed as an American-Pakistani. Somy Ali worked in many Indian films in 1990’s. She was famous for dating Salman Khan in that era as well. Somy never worked in any Pakistani production.

somi_ali_04

Aneeta Ayoob
Aneeta Ayoob was the first full Pakistani national female artist to work in Indian films. Before Aneeta Salma Agha has worked on her british passport and Zeba Bakhtiyar also worked on her foreign passport (US or Ireland) in India, but Aneeta went to India with her Pakistani passport. Aneeta was studying acting from an acting institue in India where she was offered a role by famous Indian artist Dev Anand for film Pyaar Ka Trana in 1993. Pyaar Ka Trana failed miserably at Indian box office but Aneeta was casted in another film Gangster also produced by Dev Anand.  In 1993, India was shocked by a series of bomb attacks in its financial capital Mumbai (then Bombay).

The hostile Indian government refused to issue visas to all Pakistanis passport holders, thus Aneeta forced to leave India midway through the shooting of film Gangster. Later Gangster was completed outside India but it also failed at box office ending the Aneeta’s career in Bollywood.

Back in Pakistan Aneeta was widely criticized not for working in Indian films but for her bold photoshoots for some Indian fashion magazines.

anita-231x300

Aneeta Ayoob was the last in a series of artists who worked in India from 1980’s to 1990’s. After Aneeta no Pakistani actor crossed the border for almost a decade. Meanwhile in Pakistan the fading Urdu cinema reached its end, thus halting film making. From early 2000’s many new satellite Pakistani channels emerged which revived Pakistani drama industry providing recognition to new breed of artists. Also the generation born and raised during and after 1980’s was in full bloom now. Though most among this new generation do watch Indian movies with same craze as earlier generations, very few of them have ever seen any Pakistani actor in a contemporary Indian film.

From 1999 – 2006 Pakistan was again under the dictatorship of another General named Parvez Musharf. Like General Zia, Pakistan also enjoyed warm relations with India during Musharraf regime, so cricket ties are resumed and Indian cricket team visited Pakistan after a gap of nearly 15 years.  Same was the case for arts and showbiz, under these favorable relations many Pakistani artists started seeking work in Indian films.  But unlike Zia’s era when such act was termed as a good will gesture, most of these artists generally faced hostile attitude from general public, press, electronic media and social media some even questioning their faith and loyalty.

During the same era, ban on screening of Indian films in cinemas is lifted (it was imposed in 1965) which proved a positive step towards cinema industry. Indian films received overwhelming response and whole heartedly welcomed by Pakistani cinegoers and since then Indian films are making new records of business in cinemas.

Indian and Pakistani Musicians Join Hands To Make Music

0

This independence day the Indian band “Maati Baani” launched a song “Rang Rangiya” in which they also gave Pakistani singers and musicians a chance to participate. The song gives out the message of peace and love. It is a very melodious song which aims at bridging the differences that exist between Pakistan and India.

Evelyn D’souza, one of the main members of the production team and head of talent search and coordination, said, “Everything was online.”

This was the main reason, she said, that helped in reaching out to artists in Pakistan.

The team found Pakistani artists, Komal Rizvi (singer), Gulab Afridi (Rubab player), Omran Shafique (guitarist), Kurt Menezes (drummer) and Asfandyar Junejo (beatboxer) on YouTube. They reached out to them and started recording. No musician from either country charged any fees for working on the song.

Here is a video of the song:

Woh…Dubara – Episode 2

0

The best thing about the play so far is the strong and positive relationship between everyone in Zubair’s house. Eman and her mother’s wicked ways are totally opposite to the positivity we see in Zubair’s house. I am not sure if I am liking the contrast much though! I was expecting a lot more action in tonight’s episode but there was too much talking and very little action. The prequel of the show was short and to the point but I have a feeling that this sequel is going to be long. Conversations between Eman and her mother already seem repetitive, we see so much of this gherulu politics in our dramas every day, I wish the writer would have come up with a different storyline for the sequel. It would have been better if there were no issues in the family but the only real problem was the demon which was haunting the house. I have a feeling that it is going to be Emaan vs the demon sort of a scenario…..because both of them are evil!! The focus has been on Umair’s wedding like every other Pakistani dramas in which the focus is always on marriage and the problems related to it.

Untitled

Zubair and Yasmeen never talk about Ali, who has an invisible friend ever since they moved in the new house. Yasmeen has been noticing change in Ali’s behavior but somehow it is not bothering her at all. Yasmeen appears to be more worried about Awais than Ali, which is strange. The last scene of tonight’s episode was spooky but the rest of the episode was strictly okay. The “bhoot’s” appearance has of course been inspired by the film “The Ring”. This is a screen shot from the movie “The Ring”, can you see the resemblance? These two disturbed souls must be related to each other;)…long-lost twins maybe!

10

Yasra Rizvi is portraying the character of the caring and intelligent bhabi and wife’s role perfectly. Shahood Alvi is a natural who always delivers. Seema Sehar who plays Emaan’s mother is an expert in playing the role of a troublemaker but I don’t like her character much for obvious reasons. The advices she gives her daughter have been-there-heard-that thousand times written all over them and same is true for Emaan’s character. Umair’s character is actually a breath of fresh air because unlike most of the love-struck men we see on screen, he still looks at things from a neutral perspective.

I am actually disappointed with this second episode and I wish that the director did not copy the look of the evil spirit from a Hollywood movie; I expected Angeline Malik to be slightly more creative than that.

Meray Humdum Meray Dost – Episode 18

0

I liked today’s episode not because of Haider,Aiman or Sajeela, but because of growing father-daughter relationship. We, finally got to see some beautiful and very cute father-daughter scenes today.Aiman always complained Haider that his father never owned her, neither did he called her “beti”, nor did he uttered a single word that can show his concern for her. But tonight, all doubts of Aiman got vanished.

Sajeela is trying every possible way to win Haider’s heart again and for that she is tending to be as much cheap and desperate as possible. She planted seeds of doubts in Aiman’s head and everytime Aiman rose with a new spirit, Sajeela was there to let her down. This time Aiman asked Bibi about love and longing for someone and the reply she got from her was way more satisfying than her expectations.

From the day Sajeela came back to Pakistan, Haider clearly gave her “not interested” signal but she wants to get him back- by hook or by crook. Almaas tried to talk to Haider about her sister but he didnot pay heed to what she said either. By the way, I am hating how Sajeela is intervening in Haider and Aiman’s life and trying to ruin their relation, I am hating how she is trying to manipulate her sister and compelling her to take a move against her nature and her will and I am literally hating how she is faking herself just to pose herself as if she is the nicest person on earth. Sajeela is so desperate that she even challenged Bibi that she will win Haider back.

e.jpg

Anyhow, coming back to my favorite part, Taufeeq Kamaal decided to make Aiman a permanent part of his business. Aiman, for the very first time, felt that her father really cares for her. But deep down inside, some vague doubts were still intimidating her to not accept her father’s loyalty towards her. And like always, Haider was there to clean up the mess that was in her mind since her childhood. Her mother never told Aiman that Taufeeq never disowned her, it was her who wanted Taufeeq to not meet her.Despite of all the failed attempts by Taufeeq to meet his daugher, Aiman’s mother never gave a glimpse of satisfaction to her daughter by telling her that Taufeeq loved her and always cared for her.No matter how much differences they had, Taufeeq wanted to take care of every need and necessity of Aiman’s but it was her mother who never let that happen.

a.jpg

Aiman loved her mother and since she is living with her father now, she was unable to deny the fact that she has a soft corner for her father too. Now that, everything was crystal clear, she forgave her mother for what she did and tried to forgot the deprivations and longings she went through entire her life because her mother kept her away from Taufeeq Kamaal.

b.jpg

It was really nice to see that just before going to office, Taufeeq presented a car as a gift to Aiman- Aiman was overwhelmed and very much excited after getting a gift from her father. I loved the way how Taufeeq introduced Aiman infront of everyone as his daughter and Aiman felt much more confident as her father boosted up her moral.

c.jpg

Whereas on the other side, Haider was feeling depressed as few seconds ago, Almaas called him Aiman’s uncle. Haider came such a long way with Aiman that he completely forgot the age difference they had ; Now that bitter truth came to haunt him again, he got worried about what will happen next; He was unable to believe what he just heard but still, he gave his honest opinion to Almaas that she should consider Shaheer’s proposal for Aiman; Almaas’s expression were worth watching at that time; She was ashamed of doubting Haider’s intentions.

d.jpg

As Aiman clearly told Sajeela that she is interested in Haider, I am anxiously waiting to see that what will be her next move.Preview of next seems very interesting; Aiman will confess her love which will make Haider upset. Lets see what happens next.

Mausam – Episode 13

0

I have not seen so many dukhi people in one drama and the background score is just as sad as the fate of all the characters in the play! Mubarak ho! The good news is that a year passed in few minutes in tonight’s episode but not much has changed in this one year. Hashir is still stuck on Saman, Shazia is still counting days, “waqt guzarana” is her favorite hobby, talk about being fixated… she needs treatment! Hashir’s father continued blackmailing his mother, Nigar and Saman are still going to the same parlor and Saman still hasn’t figured out that Faisal and Shazia are “in touch with each other”. Looks like everyone has started borrowing foundation from Saman or they have been using Zubeida Apa’s whitening cream:) It was good to see that at least one unmarried lady in the drama has some self-respect; Mehreen decided to move on after finding out why Hashir left.

The recap of everything that transpired between Shazia, Hashir and Co was a waste of time, it was totally unnecessary. And although the music that played in the background while Shazia recalled everything that happened was really melancholic but I did not feel an ounce of sympathy for her. Like I said before she comes across as someone who needs professional help from a good psychiatrist. No girl in the right state of mind would obsess over someone she barely knows the way Shazia has been obsessing over Hashir. What she feels for Hashir is anything but love because if it really was that then she wouldn’t be involved with Faisal at the same time too. It is almost as if Shazia will do anything to ensure that Saman does not get any happiness at all. She feels pride in the fact that Faisal does not treat Saman well and is still in love with her.

Untitled

I must say that this drama has been very thanda till now. Something or the other happens in every episode but the story doesn’t really take off. There has been no character development in the play at all. Faisal is still mean, Shazia has always been selfish, Hashir is too seedha and dukhi of course and Saman does not believe in using her brains or showing any emotions. It must not have taken the writer Aliya Bukhari a lot of time to pen this script down because the amount of “effort” that has been put in character development and story development shows clearly in every episode. I honestly feel like it is about time that our writers start concentrating on quality and not quantity! And our producers stop relying on the same ghissi pitti stories. I am so not looking forward to the next episode; nothing about the preview appealed to me. I just hope the drama ends decently, right now it seems to be going nowhere. Romaissa has been replaced by Saman on Friday nights….hurray!

Sarwat Gillani’s Barat Pictures

0

Danish Taimoor and Ayeza Khan have been very generous with sharing the photographs of their wedding functions with their fans but Sarwat Gillani whose Baraat was yesterday which probably means that the other functions were on Tuesday and Wednesday has not shared the photographs of her functions with her fans. I found this photograph of Sarwat on her wedding day. I am sure that her fans will really like to see her as bride.

3

This does not look like a photograph that has been taken by a professional photographer so the result is different from the wedding pictures we usually see of celebrities.

There is one more picture in which Sarwat Gillani and Fahad Mirza are seen with their friends in a group photo.

Here is another one of Fahad and Sarwat together

Pehchan – Episode 17

0

Mansoor gave his “verdict” on Laila’s character in tonight’s episode when Laila’s mother called him in the hope that he will be willing to patch things up with Laila. Mansoor thinks that a woman who leaves with her daughter for her mother’s house in the middle of the night is a “hooker” but what do you call a man who goes alone to meet his lover in the middle of the night? The double standards regarding men and women that exist in our society were highlighted in tonight’s episode more than ever. Laila’s brother may not have been there for her when she needed him the most but he still feels that he has the right to tell Laila how to live her life. Laila is made to feel like she is the protector of her family’s dignity and in order to keep her family’s dignity intact she must sacrifice her own self-respect and happiness. Laila’s mother does not give her daughter an ounce of respect. I don’t agree with the way Laila’s mother is handling the situation, she is only making things worse for her daughter but I can definitely relate to her character. Our society in general has this attitude towards women; people love to label them and they love to judge them maybe because they are easy victims. And women who go out in search of their own pehchan face the same difficulties which Laila is facing. The dialogue about the kind of relationship which Laila shared with her brother when they were younger was very poignant .. (Zolpidem) ” lekin bhaiya phir aik din bara ho gaya “ !! And then he realized that he was a man, which made him far more superior than his sister and that changed everything!

Untitled

Laila’s mother thinks that a muraba or some spiritual healing might give Laila the patience she needs in order to put up with the problems of shadi shuda zindagi which are generally considered normal because every woman at some point goes through everything that Laila has been through and is expected to put up with. Now the question is that if something wrong is very widely accepted in the society, does that make it right? When Laila’s mother said “insan sub kuch bardasht kr leta hai”, I found it ironic because what she actually meant was that a woman is capable of enduring anything at all! Dialogues like “mard ka ego hota hai” clearly meant that women don’t have an ego or self-respect because only one person in a marriage can keep their self-esteem intact! After all ego hota hai, hoti nahi hai!!

Laila thinks about the time she spent with Mansoor, starting with the day she got married to the day when Mansoor handed her the phone asking her to talk to his girlfriend. She also thinks about the conversations she used to have with her father and her father’s words reinforce the idea that she too deserves to be happy. She does not need to go through all the pain which Mansoor put her through only because her mother, family and the society expect just that from her.

1

Kukoo seemed to be doing well without Khurram except for the candlelight dinner scene in which it looked like she was finding it hard to combat loneliness. Kukoo has however learned her lesson well and she also wants Laila to know what is good for her without enduring the kind of pain which Laila had to endure. Kukoo accepts that she wouldn’t want Laila to make the same mistakes she made…“aik mard se jaan churanay ke liye dusre ka khanda mat dhoondo, talash krna hai tu apne aap ko karo…mujh se hi kuch seekh lo”. The relationship between Mrs. Khan, Kukoo and Laila has to be one of the most beautiful aspects of this play. We don’t get to see women looking out for each other in Pakistani dramas the way these three do.

Tonight’s episode was more of an extension of the last one; it focused on the repercussions of Laila’s decision. Laila has her mind made up and she is not willing to give her relationship with Mansoor another chance. Kukoo has moved on as well. Will Laila be able to stay strong considering how much opposition she has to face? Will she find her own pehchan or will she have no choice but to rely on another man? Bee Gul’s script is powerful; many writers might not even venture into writing something that maybe seen as a “threat” to the status quo that exists in our society! Khalid Ahmed’s direction has been superb throughout; the play has a very artistic feel to it. All the actors have done a commendable job but Iffat Rahim and Sohail Sameer in particular have totally won me over. I actually missed watching Mansoor on screen tonight.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

0

Happy Independence Day to all readers and my team!

Independence is a bounty from ALLAH and we should be very thankful to ALLAH that we are an independent nation.
Independence day

For sure we have got this country after so many sacrifices, but my heart cries out after watching what is currently going on in our country. Vulgarity in the name of Fashion Show, Political chaos and Pakistanis suffering from economic and political turmoil. Politicians fighting with each other, Injustice and atrocities everywhere. Terrorism and extremism in the name of religion

We need to identify our roots and culture today, we should not forget our history and those people who have sacrificed their lives for this Land. We may not know but this country is very very special as it came to existence on 27th of Ramzan.

This country is blessed with so many bounties like natural resources and Geographical situation another thing that worries the world most is that Pakistan is a nuclear state. We got the best army and special forces to protect our beloved country.
happy-independence-day-pakistan-2

So if we just stop fighting and hating each other and try to bring unity, faith, honesty and discipline among ourselves, we can easily bring change in this country. Despite of all short comings this country is ours whether good or bad but we own it, so instead of fighting we should care about each other and try to help each other.

Independence is a very precious thing and we should be very thankful to ALLAH. Ask from the people of Kashmir, from Gaza how they are suffering and how they are deprived from independence.

It is the time that we should eliminate hypocrisy, extremism, intolerance, hatred and deceit because if we do not eliminate these things we will remain divided. Seriously words are not enough to describe the love for my country.

Thank you ALLAH and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah for gifting us such a beautiful country

“Ya Allah is pyaray watan mein khushiyan dobara lauta de aur humein is qaabil bana de ke hum apne watan ke kaam asaakein! Ameen”

Enjoy my two favourite independence day track from Vital Signs

In Memory of Pyarai Afzal… !

0

On demand of many readers, I was thinking to write an overview of Pyarai Afzal. But, after watching Pyarai Afzal’s finale and reading the response from you people, I changed my mind and decided to come up with something that can relish our moods and bring smile on the faces of all heart-broken girls and guys out there. So people, this article has nothing to do with the mourning and lamenting in memory of our very Pyarai Afzal. We all are here to enjoy the response that came after the telecast of last episode.

Due to the political condition of country, everyone came up with new idea of bidding farewell to the show.. :P

Shanakht – Episode 02!

0

Ohkay so, we’re done with the second episode of Shanakht & I can’t wait to see more. The way the story is unfolding, they have managed to stir the curiosity & for all the right reasons. I must say, I am totally impressed by the acting of all the characters (minus the over-actor playing the role of Hashim’s friend) because they all look so real & have given out the genuine feel to their characters. The direction has been great without any such evident loopholes that can’t be ignored. I am hooked to the show & can’t wait to find out what happens next.

This episode revolved around the ordeal Hashim felt when it came to the point of giving his & Annie’s relation a name. Subconsciously Hashim grasped all those notions that he might’ve come across regarding Annie’s choice of Hijab. Apparently, Hashim himself was the one who helped Annie convincing her family when she decided to go for Hijab but no matter how supportive he was of his cousin or best friend, he still can’t seem to come to terms with the fact that he wants to spend a life with a girl who shares a different mindset & has her own ideology. Hashim may respect & put Annie to a high regard, but he certainly doesn’t think she’s worth spending a life with. I must say, the opinion Hashim shared was quite unpredictable. Like Hashim’s mother Shireen said, she thought he’d jump with joy at the idea of his & Annie’s marriage, but what took her by surprise was an unexpected hesitation that he showed.

Annie on her own was struggling to maintain a balance between her mother & her endeared friend Ayesha. Ayesha has been the one who has tried to help Annie the best way possible but for Huma, Ayesha is just someone who has made Annie disrespectful & rigid. Annie for once didn’t understand the reason why Ayesha was keeping a distance but after finding out, Annie respected her friend’s confession & made sure she didn’t do anything that would upset her mother because her friend Ayesha helped her in understanding her mother’s point of view a bit better. Annie didn’t show any signs of disappointment but deep within she felt ashamed for the things her friend had to go through.

The focal point of this episode was the potential marriage of Hashim & Annie, where Annie deep within showed acceptance towards it because for her nothing more than her family’s happiness matters anymore. Even though Annie decided she should’nt think too much about it, she understood that even if it happens & the elders decide their marriage, she’d be pretty happy with it because Hashim has always been a supportive figure & a friend to her.

Hashim really was torn between his choice of a partner & his parent’s choice but he wanted to make up his mind & a visit to Ayesha’s home gave him a decisive push that he was looking for. Sadly for Hashim, a guy with a beard is no one but a terrorist. A simple household is nothing but an exhibition of backwardness & regression. Hashim was so blinded by his hatred that he forgot to see how cordially he was welcomed by a stranger in his house. How nicely he was treated but just because Hashim wanted to see & hear what he wanted to, he decided that he can’t put up with Annie’s choices too.

All the conversations were done beautifully & I really liked the conversations between Hashim & Annie. As much as he wanted her to convince him & even a little sign on the lines that he wanted to read would’ve been enough for Hashim but just because Annie decided to stick to the truthfulness without giving him any false hopes that she’d change herself for him, Hashim heartbrokenly decided the otherwise. Annie has decided something & she wants to stick to it no matter what & this gives her character an edge of a head-strong girl that we all wanted to see. I love Annie’s character for the fact that she’s determined & strong-headed yet very soft spoken, which puts her in a very positive light.

Annie’s parents are pretty happy about Hashim & Annie’s marriage but they really don’t know what’s yet to come. For a change it’s nice to see a good sisterly-like relation that Annie & Kashaf share. Not sure what might happen between them when Hashim’s parents will give a proposal for Kashaf instead of Annie but for now, their little conversations seem real & very genuine. Interestingly, a new family of Ahmad’s business partner was introduced & luckily they are searching for a prospect wife for their son Rohaan. I think we all can predict what will happen when they will get to meet Annie at Hashim’s birthday gathering.

So my verdict is it is so far so good. Can’t wait to see more. I think Maya Ali looks simple yet gorgeous & she has played her part as Annie way too well. I think the casting was done to perfection & everyone fits in their roles really really well. Share your say on this episode of Shanakht.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Pyarai Afzal – Last Episode

0

“It is good to have an end to a journey; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” Today marks the end of a wonderful journey – a journey we all lived, a journey we all cherished ,a journey that will be remembered and will truly be missed for a long long time.

Yasmeen tried her best to convince every single person of Afzal’s family to accept the fact that there is no place for her in their house. Afzal’s family loved Yasmeen from the day she came in their lives, but they never thought of her as Afzal’s wife to be and now that everyone was familiar with the hidden truth, there was no reason for Yasmeen to elongate her stay in Hyderabad.

1

Farah’s love for Afzal proved to be so pure that she accepted that all this while, she was the one who wrote letters to Afzal. Sabtain wanted to marry Lubna but she put a condition infront of him before accepting his proposal ; He has to make Farah realize the power of true love. But he failed completely; Eventually, it was Yasmeen who turned the table and compelled Farah to confess her love for Afzal. Indirectly, it was a plus for Sabtain and Lubna was all hers in the end.

3

I am completely speechless and have no words to explain my state of mind. I am unable to express my feelings after watching this end to a wonderful journey. Afzal and Farah waited and waited for each other’s confession for so long or confession hue bhi tou kesi.. From the day , when Afzal became bhaie ,I had this thing in my mind that Afzal will ultimately pay for killing those people; No matter whether they were innocent or culprit, he took lives and he will have to pay for that. Deep down in my heart, there was another corner that was yelling that Afzal should not die and I was sincerely indented at that corner’s side and was hoping for a very happy ending to such an eventful journey.  But at the end, it was Khaleel Saheb’s script and with his signature style, he came up with a real sad end to a stupendous journey. Still, I absolutely loved the direction of very last scene where Afzal confessed his love. Farah was waiting for him to talk more and more while Afzal was taking his last breath.. jaanay woh kesay log thai jin k pyar ko pyar mila..

2

The success of this show is not merely result of single person’s struggle. It is an outcome of hard work of each and every cast and crew member of Pyarai Afzal team. Dialogues were the soul of this show; Khalil ur Rehmaan Saheb penned down a wonderful script and to give life to the splendid story , cast of the show evolved and extracted the best out of themselves. I am unable to figure out even a single name whose performance was not up-to-mark. Hamza Ali Abbasi outdid himself and this character of male protagonist,Afzal, will surely leave a mark and will prove out to be turning point in his acting career . Aiza Khan and Sohai were under a dark shadow of  type-cast ; Farah Ibrahim and Yasmeen’s role gave them a completely new look and unleashed them from a shell of doing same roles again and again. I am sure, after this serial, we will see them signing variety of different roles. Firdous Jamal did a splendid job and turned out to be most beloved Maulvi and father, he proved himself as a versatile actor and more than that he proved people’s perception regarding Maulvi’s to be wrong. Arfa and Lubna were the best and most loyal sisters I have ever came across in any show.

Overall, it was an epic show with powerful dialogues, mesmerizing characters and flawless performances. Pyarai Afzal will definitely be missed and I am guessing that it will be going to turn out as an old classic for our next generations..

Rabia Basharat.

P.S I would like to thank each one of you for making this journey memorable and enjoyable. Special thanks to Ammar, Aiman, Naveed Zarrar, Areeba Mohsin, Sharmeen, Atty, A, Shariq and Malika and each and everyone of you for enduring me and my reviews, for your continuous support, appreciation and for pushing me to the extent through the long discussions that made me fall in love with this show even more.. :)

10 Cliches I would hate to see again

0

The first thing a writer should scoop out of a story is cliches. They are annoying and sometimes really stupid because they make the story predictable and watching a predictable drama is no fun. Personally, I resent cliches. I grab the remote and change the channel whenever I smell them coming my way.

Following is a list of common cliches which most of the audience hopes never to see again:

1. The senseless love-at-first-sight: I don’t know where the trend started from, but this cliche has been spotted in many dramas. It was there in Adhoori aurat, Mirat-ul-uroos, Khuda aur Muhabbat, Khoya Khoya Chand and recently in Mausam. Maybe if we are given a proper reason as to why the hero falls in love with the heroine, this cliche will be a bit easier to digest.

kkc mausam adhoori aurat

2. Confident and intelligent girl as vamp : If a girl is confident and likes to voice her opinion, she is evil. She is bound to be a villain who runs after the hero desperately. Shazia in Mausam is a recent example. Others include Sara of Humsafar and Zuni of Aks. Kashaf in ZGH was the only exception.

4 5

3. Idiot girl as heroine : Girls, do you want a BIG house and 3 or 4 cars? Then oil your hair daily and tie them as tightly you can into a braid, wear the least fashionable clothes and spend each and every minute of your life in the kitchen. Moreover, act dim-witted all the time and you will get everything you want. Romaisa of MSKSH tops the list.

Untitled Untitled1

4. The Humsafar cliche: Yes I call it that. Ever since Humsafar became a big hit, every writer fell in love with it. We all remember the scene when Khizer threw water on Khirad’s clothes and came so near to her that Asher got the wrong idea. That idea has been copied several times after Humsafar. It was copied in Aitraaf, Meri Dulari, Jiya na jaye, Mere Harjayee and Mujhe Khuda pe yaqeen hai.

Untitled Untitled1 Untitled2

5. Second marriage: Fatima Awan has already written an article on this and this cliche deserves to be criticized.

Untitled

6. Shukk, shukk everywhere: Muhabbat ab nahi hogi which started last week is a recent example of this. The seed of doubt can destroy any relationship and tear families apart. It is however, frequently shown in dramas and I wonder sometimes if the directors and producers have some animosity with happy families. Examples include, Nadamat, Shukk and many others.

shak Untitled

7. Running away: If parents refuse to let a girl or boy marry by their choice, the only option the two idiots have is to run away. Since the parents are evil and they HAVE to be punished. In more desperate times, when the heroine is all set to be married to another guy whom her parents have chosen, she runs away on the wedding day, to make her parents suffer the most. Recently, Bhool showcased this. Other shows include Ahmed Habib ki betiyan ( 2 of the 3 sisters ran away :O ), Mein Abdul Qadir hoon, Sari bhool hamari thi.

MAQH1011.

8. Husband’s death: After the death of a husband, a woman is shown powerless in Pakistani dramas. She lets everybody manipulate her and does not take a stand for herself. I understand that she goes through a trauma but directors should motivate women and tell them how to take a stand for themselves.

msks bhabi zindagi tere bina

9. Harassment of women: The trend started in Roag and continued ever since. Nowadays, the trend has shifted to creepy “behnois” like Saba’s behnoi in Bhabhi and Abdul-Sami Saani’s character in Khushboo ka ghar.

10bhabi

10. Suicide attempt: People are encouraged to cut their wrists and die of they can’t get the love of their lives. Sara of Humsafar did this along with many others. Only if the writers realized how much punishment a commiter of suicide will be given after death.

Shikwa-Episode 14

0

Well, 14 episodes down and I feel that the story is getting a bit monotonous now. Yes, there were some developments but I didn’t find anything totally out of the ordinary.

I just fail to understand Munazzah’s psyche. At first, she forced Mehar to marry a man who was old enough to be her father. And now that Mehar has finally come into terms with the reality, I don’t know why Munazzah doesn’t like it when Mehar defends her husband. Plus that conversation between Sidra and Munazzah at the beginning of the episode was totally uncalled for! I mean, it’s crystal clear that Mehar has wholeheartedly accepted Saqib as her husband, so now what’s the point of discussing that, ‘Saqib itna acha shohar hai. Mehar ko kab aqal ayegi? Uss ko kis cheez ki kami hai akhir?’

10

Saqib finally left for Sharjah. Seeing Mehar teary and emotional went on to prove her sincerity. It was only then that Munazzah realized Mehar has accepted Saqib as her husband. Don’t you think this realization came a bit too late? If there’s one actress in our TV industry who can cry real tears effortlessly, it’s definitely Sonia Hussain! Maybe I am wrong but Waseem Abbass looked a bit bored today. His dialogue delivery and expressions are getting repetitive now. That departure scene was well-executed though. And yes, one more piece of info: there are doctors these days who offer transport services to their patients’ behenois :P I mean, I completely understand that Shariq is doing all of this to prove to Sidra and her family how efficient and caring he is, but come on guys! Who does this these days? But then again, they call it a drama for a reason, right?

11.

Firdaus Aapa marked her entry this time. Oh my! She is clearly the most irritating, finicky and ungrateful lady I’ve seen. No wonder her daughter-in-law couldn’t tolerate her! She is way too hard to please and I am surprised how a strong-headed girl like Mehar has survived a day without complaining!

Shariq and Sidra’s intimacy is clearly making Mehar jealous, and the last scene totally caught me off guard. Shariq should receive an award for blurting out all the important details in one go. What he said literally went on like this:’ Sidra, how are you? I know you don’t mind but I am calling to inform you that I am sending my mother to your house for proposal.’ TADA! Did I mention that he said all of this without a pause? I hate to be the bearer of bad news Dr Charming, but actually it wasn’t Sidra-it was Mehar who picked up your phone call! Yes guys, you heard me right! It just so happened that Shariq called, Mehar picked up the phone, and though our hero is a doctor but he is too naïve to know that BEFORE you start talking just like that, you first inquire who’s on the other side of the line!! Well, the episode ended on that note so we are now left with assumptions only.

12
So, this was it for this week folks! We all can sense Mehar’s growing jealousy but it’s difficult to imagine her as the villain of the play. The thought of Sidra marrying Shariq will surely fill her with disgust but I seriously can’t imagine her being an obstacle in Sidra’s marriage. Alas, we should all give up on the actress playing Sidra’s role.

Let’s see how the story unfolds now. Share your thoughts on this installment. I will be looking forward to your feedbacks!

0

Recently, Sanam Saeed was asked that if she wanted to enter Bollywood when offered a role and her answer was Yes!
In her recent interview to IANS, actress Sanam Saeed said that if the story is of her interest and has the capability to remove gap between the two countries(Pakistan and India), then she would surely go for it. However, she did say that she is not competing or approaching through agents to find a place for herself in Bollywood. She said:

“I would like to make space without an agent. I want my work to speak for my talent and it will be an achievement if producers and directors look at my work and offer me something. I think for an actor, that will always be a great feeling.”

Sanam Saeed is one of the most versatile Pakistani artists and is truly a gem of our industry. She has been a theater artist, video jockey, stand-up comedian, singer and a model. Britain is where she was born and her family moved to Karachi when Sanam was only six years old. She also mentioned that she likes stories that are female-oriented. She will be appearing in Mah-e-Meer, an upcoming Pakistani film, in a very prominent role.
Sanam’s favorite Bollywood artists include Vidya Balan, Tabu and Shabana Azmi. She said:
I like their style of work. It’s more serious and organic as compared to actors who are more into beauty and glamour.

Her drama serial “Zindagi Gulzar Hai” was aired on an Indian channel called “Zindagi” which managed to gather a huge fan following for her in India. Her co-star in the drama Fawad Khan did got a Bollywood movie and it is likely that Sanam might also get an offer from Bollywood soon.

She however made it clear that she was not going to go there looking for work “I’d like to make space (in Bollywood) without an agent. I think for an actor, it will always be a great feeling,” said Sanam Saeed on a telephonic interview.

Chef Samia Jamil’s Mehndi Pictures

There was a time when people preferred getting married after October because the weather at that time is much better but now we see many celebrities getting married in this hot season. It is good to see that they don’t let the weather get in the way of the festivities.

Those viewers who watch Zaiqa TV must be well acquainted with Chef Samia Jamil; she hosts her own show on the channel and is an expert in making desserts. Here are pictures from her colorful Mehndi function.

I Am Considering Hiring A Dance Tutor – Fawad Khan

0

Fawad Khan is very open about his weaknesses as well strengths, he has always made it very clear that he is not high maintenance and he also finds it very difficult to dance. In his recent interview with Dawn News, he said “I am considering hiring a dance tutor to help me get over my two left feet. Right now, I don’t think I’d be able to pull off an all-out item number with class. It’s not something that makes me feel insecure about my future — I believe that every actor has his or her own weak points and strong points.”

He also talked about the things that Badar Khalil said about him in her interview with Dawn News, he said, “People tend to fabricate stories and I can only assume that perhaps Badar Khalil heard something wrong about me and believed it to be true. I wish she had discussed her problems with me rather than declare them to the public. I am extremely respectful of our senior actors and I think she took offence due to some misunderstanding,”

When asked that did he have a stylist for himself only on the set, he said, “No, even my current haircut was done on set. My hair was getting untidy so some guy I didn’t know was called in and he just cut my hair,” Fawad laughs. “I am not finicky at all regarding my appearance. If tomorrow I decide to take on a personal stylist it will only be because I need to maintain a certain appearance for a role.”

He also said that he can try to stay out of controversies all he wants but there will always be people who will always talk about him behind his back. He said, “I could go hoarse clarifying myself but there will always be people who spread rumors and want to believe the worst about you. I once heard that I had allegedly fallen out with Momina Duraid and walked out of her upcoming serial Bin Roye Aansu. In actuality, Momina and I remain cordial and I couldn’t sign up for the project because I wasn’t feeling well.”

3khoobsurat

It was also stated in the interview that the last month was very tough for Fawad Khan because his diabetic condition got worse. He said, “With time, I am learning how to balance my workload with my condition but I certainly can’t take on as much work as other actors probably can.”

“I am currently contemplating a new externally administered insulin-pumping therapy with my endocrinologist. I like to discuss my condition publicly because if I, with this disability, am able to fulfill some of my ambitions, so can other diabetics.” said Fawad Khan.

Fawad Khan said that he will be working in Pakistani movies in the future. He is currently involved in working in three Pakistani movies but he cannot share the details right now.

Aahista Aahista – Episode 11!

0

I am sorry but this drama has taken the most ridiculous turn ever. Seems like the writer was really bored so she barfed this story all over the pages, without any insight & without any know-how of penning down a proper story with some real & honest characters.

Just because Haya shooed Awazar away in the first scene when he threw a tantrum at her for speaking to Mustafa, Awazar has had a quick realization that just because some girl told him off & hurt his peanut ego, he now can’t live without her & wants to get her just because for a moment she didn’t nappify him. I wish Sofia had done the same thing so that Awazaar would’ve stayed in his limits. Just because she literally spoon fed him all along these years while she was married to him, he is now taking her for granted.

Awazar has fallen so much in love with Haya that he feels Sofia is nothing but just a ‘ghalti’ between them? Why is it that the victim Sofia has all of a sudden become a villain Sofia? I heard Awazar saying ‘Allah ne mujhe ijazat di hai dusri shadi ki’, which made me think that Awazaar appko Allah ne justice karne k liye bhi kaha hai dono biwiyon k saath! All of a sudden Awazar now wants Sofia to just vanish from his life so he can enjoy his life with a Pakistani wife in Pakistan with his Pakistani mother in his Pakistani home eating Pakistani pakwaan, wearing Pakistani shalwar kameez & Pakistani chappal. So, my point is, when he was SO Pakistani, why did he get married to an Indian in the first place? Just so easily he thinks he can throw Sofia out like a Tea-Bee, so what gave him a right to destroy 4 years of her life?

Maham of Shukk as Ruby of Slowly Slowly, hmmmm, déjà vu anyone? Why’s it that this lady always acts like an agony aunt who is reminding every single girl about how her husband’s falling short of his responsibilities & is taking his wife for granted? I think she really needs to do better. All this while, Sofia came across as a wife who was so over-protective of her husband & to be honest, before his 2nd marriage Awazar never gave her a reason to doubt or question him, so when did Sofia feel a need to share her marital imperfections with her friend, who is now rubbing it all over her face?

Looks like every single character in this drama is either rubbing themselves on others or is living in a fool’s paradise. Awazar hated the idea of pretentious breakfast to make Bee Jaan happy when he was angry at Sofia for speaking to Mustafa, so didn’t he forget that he himself is making Haya pretend to be all happy & carefree in front of his Bumble Bee all this while? Bumble bee hated seeing Sofia buzzing around her Beta Bee, so why wasn’t she worried when he came to USA & didn’t even bother visiting her for 4 good years? I mean this thing is beyond my understanding that Bumble Bee hated seeing a colleague getting candid with Awazar, why didn’t she question him before about who he was working with & who he was friends with? Don’t tell me that Bumble bee thought her Beta Bee had no linkups with any girls in Amreeka?

Nothing in this drama is making sense. Haya; who in the first 5 seconds of the episode came across as someone who knew how to stand up for herself later became someone who was ready to lead a life on someone else’s tukray? She is now waiting for an approval of Sofia so that she can continue living in a zinc-clad jannat of hers with her thakkela Awazar? I mean PHULEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ!

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.
