The Manchester attack, that took place on Monday following a pop concert by singer Ariana Grande has shaken the World. The blast killed as many as 19 persons, while 59 were injured.

Ramadan 2024 is about to end and as always Muslims all over the world celebrated this Holy month with zeal and enthusiasm. But this year’s Ramadan is not like it used to be in the previous years. The misery, pain and injustice being meted out to the Muslims all over the world is unparalleled. For instance, the people in our own country cannot buy basic staple food. Inflation has made people commit suicide in many cities while many other families who used to help others previously need help themselves. PEMRA’s latest steps to promote nationalism through TV channels and to stop content that is unethical or indecent comes after the Senate ordered it to take notice of different programmes that were not in line with Pakistan cultural identity and could easily be regarded as unethical.

PEMRA issued notice to all the private TV channels to “telecast national anthem before the start of everyday transmission as being practiced in neighboring countries to promote patriotism.” In an announcement the officials of PEMRA showed their discontent with the way religion was used for commercial purposes during the Ramadan transmission by the private TV channels.

According to the announcement “Such programmes were not only lamented by legislators but also by a large number of people who believed that the programmes were against the norms and violate the sanctity of Ramadan.”

The channels have been asked not to use religion to gain the attention and good will of the consumers.

Many people have criticized PEMRA for being slow in taking action because such an action should have been taken during Ramadan so that people did not have to watch all these programmes in the Holy month.

The watchdog, PEMRA has suspended Apna TV or Jalwa TV (as it is popularly known) for seven days from April 29, 2017, to May 6, 2017, for airing obscene content on March 30, 2017, and April 4, 2017.

Jalwa TV reportedly aired a vulgar Hindi video song called “Jahaan Tum Ho” sung by Shrey Singhal.

Therefore, PEMRA slapped a seven day on the channel after receiving a number of complaints about the indecent songs that were played on the channel. Pemra has also ordered the channel to air an apology after the resumption of transmission on May 6, 2017.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the license of Geo News for 15 days.

According to PEMRA spokesman, the license was suspended on a complaint filed by the Defence Ministry earlier. Geo News has also been fined Rs 10 million to be paid before the expiry of the suspension period.

The order stated that in case of non-payment of fine, the suspension of the license will continue. The authority further decided that in case of repeated violation by Geo News, proceedings for the revocation of the license will be initiated.

According to a statement by Geo, the channel was not provided any evidence nor was its stance heard by PEMRA, which it adds, has already been punishing Geo News which remains shut in 90 per cent of the areas in Pakistan for the last 45 days.

The statement added that the channel has already apologised and had incurred Rs 2 billion in losses.

Geo News was facing the complaint after airing a hatred transmission against a secret agency and its chief after an attack on its anchor Hamid Mir in Karachi in April.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has decided to suspend the license of Geo Entertainment and ARY News over multiple complaints. Geo Entertainment license is suspended for one month, with a fine of 10 million rupees for airing objectionable and defamation content. Whole team of Geo Entertainment’s morning show named ‘Utho Jaago Pakistan’ including host Dr. Shaista Lodhi is also banned.

ARY News is suspended for two weeks, for airing defamation content (which is originally aired on Geo TV) and contempt of court in its program ‘Kharra Sach‘. Apart from the ban, whole team of program Kharra Sach including anchor Mubashar Lucman is also banned.

PEMRA has also banned re-broadcasting of any content/clip from the program ‘Uttho Jaago Pakistan‘ by any channel.

If implemented, then Geo Entertainment will be off air till upcoming Eid.

A day after Geo was served a show cause notice for airing an inappropriate scene, regulator watchdog PEMRA on Thursday issued one to TVOne for violation of PEMRA Ordinance 2002.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has taken action against Sahir Lodhi’s morning show which airs on TV One. PEMRA has issued a show cause notice to TVOne for Sahir’s ‘objectionable’ dance with a girl in the morning show.

The dance went on air in the program Aap Ka Sahir, featuring the host Sahir Lodhi and a girl, whose name PEMRA did not mention. The regulator said the host was doing such acts on a regular basis and a number of complaints have been received against him.

The notice states, that TV One was in violation of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 which states that private channels have to maintain ethical standards. The scenes aired were a violation of its rules and regulations and the code of conduct for electronic media.

TV One has been given the deadline of March 29, 2017 to reply PEMRA with an answer as to why the license holder violated its terms. The channel might have to adhere to one of the following penalties:

1) According to Section 27, shut down the program “Aap ka Sahir”
2) In accordance with Section 29, pay a fine of Rs. 1 million
3) In accordance with Section 30, cancel TV One’s license

The channel also has to answer whether Sahir Lodhi wants to explain the situation himself.

On the other hand, Geo was handed a similar notice for its program Geo Pakistan where an inappropriate scene featuring a girl and a boy was aired live. Geo also has to answer by 29th March 2017 or it will be subjugated to either Rs. 1 million in fine or the cancellation of its license.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority has been very active the past year.

The watchdog has now served notice to Aaj TV for airing foreign content. Aaj TV has been airing BBC’s content, Monday to Friday at 11 pm and by the name of “Sairabeen” and also Voice Of America “View 360°” weekdays at 7 pm.

According to section 20(I) of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 (Amendment Act 2007), it is a violation of the act in question to air foreign content without obtaining prior permission from Pemra.

The television channel has been asked to file a reply within a week by 12.00 pm on the 12th of June, 2017

Recently, Pemra fined Hum TV for showing a disputable Telefilm. Along with that, a cartoon on Nickelodeon was also banned for showing inappropriate content.

PEMRA is on a banning spree these days, slapping suspensions and fines here and there. The watchdog has now revoked the licenses of BOL TV’s two top channels Bol News and Pak Live. The authority has revoked the license after the Interior Ministry rejected security clearance of the company’s directors.

According to the report, both Bol News and Pak live have been ordered to surrender the original licenses and clear all outstanding dues. Meanwhile, all distribution networks and cable operators have also been directed to stop the channel transmission.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has showed concerns over two TV advertisements from Zong and OPPO Mobile.

According to details, these advertisements are beyond Pakistan’s cultural limits and they are shot in a manner that’s unacceptable. PEMRA has issued a notice to Pakistan Broadcasters Association in this regard which mentions that PEMRA received numerous complaints on indecent scenes in these ads.

Zong is warned over its recent Ad, that plays on a song “Boom Boom”, in which a male model gets hit inappropriately. While, the OPPO Mobile is for its objectionable clothing of female Models appearing in a TVC.

Pemra has warned them to either remove the objectionable scenes or by completely stopping its publicity on TV.

In accordance, a deadline of February 20, was given been given to both Zong and OPPO to get their ads fixed or they could be banned as per regulations and authority of National Laws. If not removed then they’ll have to face strict charges under section 27 of PEMRA Ordinance.

PEMRA is the authority that monitors what is displayed on our national channels. It has been pretty active since the last few months; suspending Ramazan game shows, sending these shows notices and recently banning the IGLOO ad.

Behold, the champ has striked again! This time Bol news is in trouble with PEMRA. The number of times that channel has gotten notices from PEMRA makes one think it would be very unusual at the news channel’s offices when they do not get a notice.

The culprit, as usual is, Amir Liaqat’s ‘Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga’. The reason for the notice has been reported to be the airing of Sadiq Taqvi’s controversial comments regarding a serving officer of the Armed officer by the name and exposing the identity of an officer posted in a war zone. This was in direct violation of PEMRA’s code of conduct, National Action Plan and operation Radd-ul-Fasad.

According to press release of Pemra, the music channels air indecent songs daily but on February 26 it exhibited the song which was the violation of code of conduct implemented by Supreme Court. The authority received many complaints against the channel for telecasting objectionable material and the viewers demanded action against it as per rules.

Pemra warned the channel to cautious in the future and follow the code of conduct otherwise strict action will be taken under Pemra Ordinance 2202 and Amendment Act 2007, section 29 and 30. The management of the channel was asked to inform the Pemra about its editorial policy of selection of the songs.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued show cause notice to TV One over its show Ishq e Ramzan hosted by Sahir Lodhi. During the show Sahir accused Quaid e Azam of being responsible for killing of thousands of people during partition which didn’t go well with the country and PEMRA.

The show stirred a lot of controversy when the host insulted a debate competition participant over nothing and gave an aggressive speech. The channel has been asked to explain its position till June 5, 2017.

After receiving more than 5000 complaints against the content that was aired on Geo TV’s Morning Show yesterday, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority PEMRA has issued a show cause notice to the channel. All the complaints received by the public have been sent to the Complaint Council where they will be scrutinized. The Council will give its final verdict with in a week.

According to PEMRA sources, Geo Morning Show went against the rules laid down by PEMRA. PEMRA sent a show cause notice to Geo TV, asking them to explain their actions. On the other hand Lahore Session Court is going to hear a case against Mir Shakeel-ur Rehman, Shiasta Lodhi, Veena Malik and her husband. The court also asked SHO Anarkali for an explanation.

Morning shows have become a headache with the low quality content they air. PEMRA also has become a very useless organization as they only give out notices to channels which get back to do the stuff they were warned for. This time PEMRA issued notices to morning shows of ARY and TV One for airing indecent content. The notices were issued for airing indecent content in the morning shows. Seems like PEMRA has finally seen the inappropriate dances going on in morning shows. PEMRA said that the content does not agree with our socio-cultural norms.

Lets see for how many days will the channels abide by PEMRA’s notice because Shaadi shows can never end.

PEMRA is on a roll for sometime now atleast as far as issuing notices is concerned. PEMRA has issued notice to ARY Communications, HUM and Geo for airing indecent content. According to PEMRA the content was not in line with the socio-cultural norms of the society as well as PEMRA’s clauses. Geo got notice for airing the glimpse of alcohol while HUM got served on a drama’s content. ARY has full landing rights for HBO and some content aired on it made PEMRA take notice.

PEMRA is taking its work very seriously by taking action against channels and shows which violate its rules in any way. This time PEMRA issued a notice to Urdu1 after it got many complaints from viewers on twitter. The notice was issued because an Indian serial “Yeh Hein Mohabatein” which is airing on Urdu1 showed a scene which showed too much intimacy between the actors.

According to the notice the objectionable scene was shown in the episode which aired on June 1. The viewers who complained about these scenes showed their concerns because they watch dramas with their families and such scenes are inappropriate because they cannot be watched with family. The notice also mentioned that Urdu1 also was given a warning before when inappropriate scenes were shown in the drama “Aashiyana Meri Mohabbat Ka” which is a Turkish play.

The holy month of Ramazan is here and it’s the chance to enhance our knowledge about Islam.

With so many channels and shows these days, it is difficult to keep tabs on everything that’s being aired, however, Pemra doesn’t fail to stay active on a few matters, to say the least.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has issued show cause notices to three TV channels, including Geo Entertainment, for violating the guidelines regarding Ramazan transmission.

Pemra accused the channels of broadcasting the quiz programmes before 9 pm in violation of para V of the directions.

The watchdog had issued guidelines for media outlets to follow during the month of Ramazan and the notification stated that the game shows would not be aired on any channel before 9 PM. Moreover, the game shows will be banned completely during last ten days of Ramazan.

Ramzan is the month of blessings but Ramzan shows have turned the holy month into prize-winning competitions. However, Pemra is taking action to finish this growing trend by restricting Gameshows to be aired only after 9 pm.

After Geo Tv, Pemra has now issued a legal notice to ARY Digital after the channel failed to comply with the watchdog’s orders and “Jeeto Pakistan” popular game show hosted by Fahad Mustafa was aired at 8 pm.

Pemra has asked the channel for a reply within 3 days and the CEO himself should appear before the High Court Islamabad.

Seems like GEO Entertainment’s popular drama serial “Fitart” has come under scanner, as PEMRA issues a warning against the content of the drama.

Geo TV has been issued a warning to align their editing policy with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s code of conduct after issuing a warning for inappropriate content and dialogues.

PEMRA, via twitter gave this warning letter to Geo Tv.

PEMRA has been in action from a while. Previously many commercials and dramas had come under the scanner by PEMRA. Geo Tv was also banned by PEMRA due to some reasons, but later got unbanned.

Urdu One is no stranger to notices from PEMRA and on Monday the channel received yet another one. The fourth show cause notice to Urdu One channel was for showing five Indian teleplays.

The dramas included Sath Nibhana Sathia, Nam Kiran, Yeh Hain Mohabbatein, Yeh Rishta Kia Kehlata Hai and Ishqbaz.

On October 19,2016 PEMRA prohibited all channels from showing Indian content. The said channel dismissed this directive and thus has received another notice.

Directing the Urdu One management to stop Indian content immediately, PEMRA has asked it to submit a reply within three days.

In addition, the CEO of the disobedient channel has also been summoned for personal hearing.

If the channel management fails to file a reply by July, 14, unilateral decision would be taken, the notice said.

PEMRA has finally taken notice of the show “Ayesha Ehtesham Ke Sath” where Khalil-ur-Rehman passed derogatory remarks on fellow panelist, Marvi Sirmed.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a notice to New News and also condemned the conversation which took place between the guests.

The notice has been issued for using vulgar language on the live show. The participants were indulged in the debate about Aurat March and the scriptwriter Khalil-ur-Rehman lost his cool.

PEMRA has served a show-cause notice to NEO News. The host will be answerable to court within seven days or else PEMRA will take strict action against the show.

Pakistan electronic media regulatory authority on Thursday banned Geo morning show for five days.

Pemra has prohibited the morning show titled Geo Pakistan from broadcasting or rebroadcasting fresh, old or repeat on Geo News for a period of five days from April 03 to April 07. The decision came as a result of showing objectionable/indecent content on the morning show.

The show was banned following a number of complaints from citizens and senior journalists after it aired a clip of a man and woman kissing during its March 15 show. According to the statement released by Pemra, a fine of Rs1 million has also been imposed on Geo News.

Nicklodeon is one of the most watched cartoon channels among our younger population. But PEMRA was not pleased with the channel when they aired an episode of show called ‘Winx Club’.

Winx Club is an Italian animated series that studios in America bought and dubbed. It has been around for over a decade and still is a popular show for many children. The show follows a group of young girls who are also fairies.

PEMRA has imposed a fine of Rs.500,000 on channel as in one of the episodes the characters were ‘indecently dressed’. They were shown wearing bathing suits.

PEMRA issued a notice to Nicklodeon on 28th April and after further investigations has imposed a fine of 500,000.

PEMRA is finally very active these days and nation wishes they will also look into the matters now more often and will impose acquired punishments in contrast to just issuing notices what they have previously done.
