Banned and censored in its home country, Sarmad Khoosat’s “Zindagi Tamasha” is making waves globally. The project, which has bagged several international accolades, became the latest recipient of the Best Film and Best Actor awards at the Asian World Film Festival. The event, held virtually on March 15, witnessed the inclusion of 40 films from over 20 participating countries, all of which were showcased during the six-day extravaganza. Films included 11 Oscar submissions for Best International Feature Film and 12 Golden Globe submissions for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language.
Zindagi Tamasha, the Oscar submission from Pakistan, took the Snow Leopard Award for Best Film. Director Sarmad Khoosat received the award from Jury member Luba Balagova Kandoor, stated a press release. The Snow Leopard Award for Best Actor went to Arif Hassan for his performance in Zindagi Tamasha.
“I am overwhelmed by the recognition this film of ours has received internationally,” Hassan said while accepting his award. “I am extremely grateful to our director Sarmad Khoosat whose dedication to the film was unparalleled. It’s about time we start telling stories that are unique to the Asian culture. There are so many stories that remain untold by the mainstream media.”
‘Zindagi Tamasha’ will represent all of us, our ‘Pakistan’ at the Oscars, says Sarmad Khoosat. Sarmad was extremely grateful for the honour too. “Winning two awards at the festival has given me and my team the right kind of morale boost and the emotional boost as well,” the filmmaker shared, upon receiving the prize for Best Film. “It has been a tumultuous journey with this film. Not being able to show it here in my own home country, it got banned. But finding this new audience for the film has made me believe more and more in the power of cinema,” he concluded.
The story of the upcoming drama serial Shehnai is going to revolve around a couple of Meerab and Bakht, who will be forced to get engaged. The story, drama, and fun will begin when they both will try to find a way to call this engagement off only because they both are already in love with someone else and then the ensemble cast and numerous characters will play their part in making it quite eventful. Saheefa recently gave an interview in which she mentioned the journey from modeling to acting. Saheefa Jabbar Khattak said, “I have been interested in gaining fame since my childhood but I never thought that I would be associated with the media in the future. Since we are Pathans, the way the girls are taught in our family is different from others, so I also thought that I would become something else.”
“After I entered into this field later I was awarded with the Emerging Talent Award, after which offers for dramas started coming. On Mother’s Day, I got a call from Hum TV that you have an audition tomorrow. I said that my marriage is going on, so they said that there is no problem. Come and give audition. I came from Lahore to Karachi to audition the very next day”, added Saheefa.
Saheefa further mentioned that, “I gave the audition in bad way so that they will reject me but hardly after 2 or 3 days I got a call that you are selected.” This drama was Saheefa Jabbar’s first project called “Teri Meri Kahani”.
Talking about her father, she said, “Abu must have thought at first when he came into my industry, but later he agreed. He always said, don’t work for money at all, do it for your interest. He used to say never run after money, where to meet with respect and this is the formula I am adapting now.”
Renowned singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was given the lifetime achievement award and honorary membership of the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi at a small but impressive ceremony in the council’s Jaun Elia lawn on Tuesday evening.
After receiving the award Ustad Rahat said, “I am grateful to the Arts Council and dedicate this award to my family, friends, and fans in Pakistan”. “My services and hard work will be for Pakistanis and the Arts Council and those people who want to learn music will have to work hard for the country”, he added. On this occasion, the minister for Sindh Culture Syed Sardar Ali Shah said, “Rahat has carried forward the legacy of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, which is a combination of classical and folk music.” He also announced that a concert featuring Rahat and Abida Parveen will be organized in Karachi to send out a message of peace to the world.
The President of council Ahmed Shah said, “Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the first artist from the world of music to get the award. Before him Zia Mohyeddin, Anwar Maqsood, Iftikhar Arif and Amar Jaleel had received it.” After that he read a citation: “the singer is the nephew of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and grandson of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. He was three years old when he took his first lesson in music and only seven when he started to get training in classical music. He has come out up playback artist, and has performed all over the world. He is also the recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.” Mr. Rahat has dedicated this award to his family, friends in Pakistan.
