Pakistani projects and actors have done great this year crossing borders and opening new avenues for upcoming talent. A Pakistani film got screened and won awards at Cannes Film Festival being the first one to do so while many actors including Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat and Ahad Raza Mir have featured in big projects with noticeable and important roles. Mehwish herself will soon feature in Ms Marvel.
Mehwish revealed that her film was the first to feature at Cannes Film Festival. She did a telefilm titled Dho Dala which was directed by Iram Parveen Bilal and it was screened at Cannes 12 years ago. Mehwish could not attend the prestigious film festival back then. All this while I couldn’t stop thinking that Saba Qamar is one of those actors who never ever stop reinventing themselves. She has given one memorable performance after another & always succeeds in leaving a long lasting mark but to see this level of performance was not only a treat but actually made me proud of her. Saba Qamar once again proved her mettle & showed that why she is the Saba Qamar that we all love watching on-screen. I must commend the director for taking the story forward in such a brilliant manner too. I really hope the pace of Fraud doesn’t falter & continues to be as gripping as it is at this stage. Despite the fact that the story of Fraud is predictable & we all can very much foresee what is going to happen – good direction & even better performances are making Fraud worthwhile.
The Aftermath
I must say, the entire build up in this episode was brilliant. Mehmood Aslam stunned me with his performance as a helpless father who just couldn’t imagine how wrong he was & how he couldn’t see beyond the display of wealth fabricated by Tabrez & his family. While looking at Nisar, one could see that he had a lump in his throat, lips dry, eyes wet & bewildered. Another reason that made this episode unforgettable. The way Nisar started laughing in disbelief was another masterstroke, not sure who it came from; the director or the actor but whoever was responsible for bringing this kind of reaction out of Nisar deserves a round of applause. It just showed that at that particular moment, Nisar finally came to terms with the reality & he knew he had lost literally everything, so this laugh was basically a cry of helplessness that he felt right then & there.
In the background, everyone’s reactions; be it Maila, Shaiza, Nayel or even his mother, all of it was captured beautifully too. Not even for a second any one of them went overboard but in fact through their expressions, they conveyed what was needed. It was definitely a wise move that not all of them had a lot of dialogues because in such grave situations, people usually end up being speechless & that is exactly what Maya’s entire family was feeling, which was shown brilliantly. Although I am sure the drama will continue to get better but I doubt there will be another episode of Fraud which will beat this one.
Maya continued to be patient, she tried to absorb what was happening but her outburst was not only justified but showed the level of emotional turmoil that she was going through. Maya is someone who is always in control of her emotions, but seeing her being hysterical simply showed how shattered she was. Her words clearly depicted everything that Tabrez took away from her, which left her helpless. I must say Saba Qamar moved me to tears in that scene & usually in the earlier stages of the drama, it is hard to feel & develop a soft corner for a character but I doubt there will be any viewer who must not have been touched by this performance in particular. It was actually realistic as well as surprising that Maya did not dwell deeper into that emotion, rather she was once again calm & collected. She was depressed to an extent that it took a toll on her health but still, she did not put herself as well as her family through that all again. The writer definitely deserves credit for not prolonging this mental & emotional state of Maya & showed that immediately after the outburst, she was composed.
I will say that throughout the episode, I had a feeling that Nisar might do something to himself, like he might give up on life because this is going to be too much of a burden to bear for him. However, I really wish that doesn’t happen & the drama that is progressing in such a convincing manner doesn’t go down that route. I would love for Nisar to be able to see Tabrez’s undoing with Maya, so I hope he doesn’t let this failure get the better of him.
Shaan & his step-mother’s scenes really do not have much to offer so far. The moment their conversation begins, I can already tell what they are going to be talking about. It’s about time something happens in Shaan’s track too. Also, a trivial issue but so far they have not actually clarified Shaan’s ex-wife’s name, is it Simra or Zimra & amusingly, in one of the scenes Shaan’s step-mother called her Sidra too. May be the writer should’ve chosen an easy name for the actors to follow.
Finest Performances
Anyhow, once again, this entire episode belonged to Saba Qamar & then a part of it also to Mehmood Aslam. Each & everything that they have shown, even the nosy neighbors who came to get some scoop was a depiction of reality. Props to the entire team for keeping it so real & packed with emotions. Saba Qamar will definitely get a lot more projects in which she will impress the audience but when it comes to this performance in Fraud, it will definitely remain one of her finest & best for sure. I will definitely commend the director for taking the drama forward so skillfully, I just hope it does not get dragged & continues to unfold in such a convincing manner. Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s first (former) wife Dr Bushra Iqbal has shared her concern about the High Court’s decision of performing autopsy of the dead body of the host Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain. She has urged fans to be vocal about it as the autopsy is a painful procedure for dead people and Islam doesn’t allow it.

Popular television host and former PTI MNA Aamir Liaquat Hussain passed away on the 9th of June at his residence in Karachi. Aamir Liaquat was found unconscious by his house help and was taken to the hospital with the help of neighbourhood shopkeepers who called the ambulance. He was pronounced dead by the doctor as soon as they reached the hospital.
Aamir Liaquat’s sudden demise raised several questions and suspicions. People had questions as to what happened to him all of a sudden. Aamir was upset already as his private videos were leaked online but he looked fine physically. Also he was a sitting member of National Assembly of Pakistan, thus the authorities wanted to perform an autopsy to ascertain the real cause of death. His family however, and his heirs, Ahmed and Dua did not want that and took permission from courts for the burial. He was buried in Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine on 10th of June.
Things took a turn when a citizen Abdul Ahad filed a petition in court seeking exhumation and postmortem of Aamir Liaquat’s body. According to him, Aamir was murdered due to a property dispute. Court has heard the matter. Aamir Liaquat’s children maintain that they do not doubt anyone and do not want to hurt their father’s soul with an autopsy.
The court has now announced the verdict and Aamir Liaquat’s postmortem has been ordered as the real cause of death cannot be ascertained until a detailed postmortem is done and internal organs are examined.

Dobara is a game-changer in many regards. It told a story that is not normal being told on Pakistani television screens. Hadiqa Kiani and Bilal Abbas Khan nailed their characters and made people fall in love with Mehru and Mahir. The drama has ended on a positive note for both the characters.
Zoya Nasir was an integral part of Dobara as she was playing Mahir’s love interest Narmeen. Her performance was also praised overall. However, her character was not positive but she did justice to her role. Zoya’s track ended suddenly in the finale and the ending overall went to the greener pastures.
Zoya is also not very happy with the ending. She revealed in an interview with Something Haute that the ending was also kept a secret from her and she was surprised to know it. She did not get it with the script. Zoya said that she expected Mehru to dump Mahir for what he did to her. But as we know, Dobara ended on an entirely different note.

She said, “a day before my sister passed away, her husband called me and said, ‘Hina is sick, please come over’_, I took it as a normal sickness and reached to their place, after reaching their I saw her in a terrible and deteriorating condition as she had a brain stroke, she was losing her movements, we took her to hospital where they suspected the clot in her brain. They said that a procedure could be done to open the vein of the brain but it would only be started when you will pay 11 lac rupees. We were agreed to do half payment in advance as we didn’t have that much money, initially, but they didn’t agree and we moved her to another hospital where they first shifted her in ICU as she was in bad condition then they placed her on ventilator, next day, she passed away in the morning at 6:00 am on 11th June, we are in grief of the loss of our too young sister, kindly pray for her, she was an active and a grateful person. She was doing philanthropic sort of work by promoting local sellers”.
Hina Daniyal Malik’s husband also told about her death, he said, “I am Daniyal Malik, Hina’s husband, I want to share that Hina didn’t face any kind of accident. She didn’t have any medical condition, she was talking to me at night and after a few minutes I woke her up for a call, she wan unconscious, It all happened in few hours, she had no medical issue, she had no accident, whatever had happened was by the will of Allah. To all the people, who are saying us to delete her videos need to understand that we were doing this as our aim. Till date, shopkeepers tell me that they are getting clients because of Hina” . The Pakistani drama industry has seen many ups and downs. The producers have through the years worked hard to keep it afloat. Unfortunately in an attempt to do so, there has been a serious regression in the content being aired on the mainstream channels in particular. These channels dare to air content that isn’t ‘mainstream’ in their opinion every now and then. Most often however these channels make sure that they do not do so in order to ensure ratings and revenues. These producers also insist that stories that slide away from what the viewers want to watch on these channels are rejected and therefore they have to bear the loss.
Many television dramas such as Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Dar Si Jati Hei Sila, Parizaad, Dil Na Umeed Tu Nahin, Raqeeb Se, Ehd-e-Wafa, Aakhri Station, and many others won the viewers over in the recent past, got the ratings and appreciation even though the stories were not run-of-the-mill. However, the producers and writers still insist that such dramas do not get the attention and ratings which other typical dramas get. Parizaad’s success lately proved otherwise. If a different drama is executed in a fine manner, it does get the ratings as well and also wins over the critics. There is definitely a large group among the audience who want to watch dramas that do not revolve around typical scenarios.
It would be safe to say that making quality dramas requires a lot of hard work, creativity and obviously time and the fact is that most channels have to keep airing dramas all through the year therefore they just cannot invest so much in every single project. The done-to-death formulas do get these channels the required ratings therefore obviously this shortcut serves their purpose better. Many actors and directors have shared their frustrations regarding the issue in interviews and on social media. And when the numbers are there for everyone to see, it is easier for them to blame the viewers for choosing to watch substandard dramas. They fail to acknowledge the fact that there is also a massive viewership for quality content because that does not support their own agendas.
While the public is blamed constantly for leaving the producers with absolutely no choice, there is also constant criticism on social media by the same public about the decline of Pakistani dramas. Such criticism is often brushed under the carpet because there are still plenty of viewers out there who are willing to watch and give ratings to content that is easy to produce and recycle. Unfortunately, this season more than ever, the channels which have given some outstanding dramas in the past have aired dramas that simply do not fit the bill. It is more obvious than ever that these 3 mainstream channels are responsible for the gradual fall of Pakistani dramas since they are the real stakeholders. While we acknowledge and understand that these channels have to earn revenue, we also feel that they have a duty to ensure that the quality of Pakistani dramas does not go further downhill.
Here are some set patterns followed by the leading channels, most of their dramas revolve around these patterns and therefore we hold them responsible for the fall of Pakistani dramas at the moment.
Geo Dramas
Drag Till Everyone Loses Interest
Geo dramas do get the ratings, there is no denying that but when was the last time Geo actually focused its energies on making and promoting quality content. Jo Bichar Gaye aired on Geo, it was a groundbreaking drama serial but by treating it like a second-rate project which did not require promotion or attention by the channel, Geo proved where its priorities lie! The television channel most often relies on star power, great visuals, and marketing strategies and they make sure that these dramas are dragged to a point that even the most loyal viewers stop watching these shows. Many of their dramas were dragged so much after they got the ratings that the only thing the viewers looked forward to was an ending! Geo has not just been recycling script ideas but they even do not put in a lot of effort into designing the posters of their dramas. These posters too have a set pattern! Even if you start watching a drama airing on Geo which you like, there is always this stress at the back of your mind that you will end up regretting it once this drama is stretched like chewing gum.
ARY Dramas
Spreading Toxicity Is The Key
ARY Digital is falling short big time for the longest time now. There have been instances when the channel aired good dramas, as is the case with all the other leading channels. But the fact is that ARY has been banking extensively on giving maximum screen time and attention to toxic characters. Apart from this, ARY takes up serious, sensitive topics and most often ends up using them for commercial purposes. Most of the dramas airing on the channel usually start off at a great pace and the shock value is used to entice the viewers. Unfortunately, this shock value is not used intelligently and is merely used as clickbait. The strategy has been working so well for the channel that recently they roped in a credible writer such as Radain Shah to write a play like Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi. Recently, ARY’s favorite topic seems to be obsessive and stubborn leads that have a very twisted idea of love. From Balaa to Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi, ARY Digital definitely takes the cake when it comes to glorifying negativity.
Hum Dramas
Frustrate Viewers Only After Engaging Them!
If we compare the kind of content that airs on ARY and Geo, Hum is definitely the ‘better’ channel but that’s only because the other channels are not doing well enough. The dramas that air on Hum often are different from the ones that air on the other two channels. That is why while shortlisting dramas which dared to be different, Hum’s dramas were in majority. However, it is obvious that in the recent past Hum is also not experimenting the way it was before. Some of their best dramas in the recent past went downhill after a few episodes. Their dramas start off promising they offer something completely brand new and once viewers are sure that they will not go down a familiar road, they tend to disappoint. Many viewers stop watching such dramas when that happens. Viewers who attach high hopes to dramas get frustrated when they start taking a route that is a little too familiar and not in line with the refreshing element of these dramas. Hum’s new dramas unfortunately offer nothing new and bank on family politics and bechari aurat for ratings.
The only reason most of us expect the best from Pakistani drama makers is that we know what they are capable of. Watching the leading channels settle for less just to stay out of trouble or for easier access to ratings has been a massive disappointment. There are still a handful of Pakistani dramas that fit the bill but we feel that currently, the downfall of Pakistani dramas has started yet again. We want to let the channels know that viewers can see what they are up to and expect them to up their game!
Farhan Saeed is ruling the screens these days with his project Mere Humsafar. People are loving to watch a romantic hero on-screen with a positive attitude towards his leading lady Hania Aamir. His drama Mere Humsafar is trending not only in Pakistan but India and Bangladesh as well.
Farhan Saeed is married to super star Urwa Hocane and both make one power couple in the industry The news of their split and later on patch up has been circulating for a while now and both the actors have largely avoided to talk about it. They are meanwhile doing solo projects and giving good performances.
The couple was rumoured to be working together again thus putting all the speculations to rest in Qasim Ali Mureed’s upcoming drama Meri Shehzadi Diana. The director’s wife Sadia Jabbar also congratulated the whole team as she tagged Urwa and Farhan alongside her husband.
Farhan has however, still built some intrigue as he gave a very vague statement about working with Urwa. He said that they are definitely doing a project together but he is not sure if they will work together or not.
