Faysal Qureshi – An Asset For Our Industry

0

Faysal Qureshi is enormously talented, very versatile and is one of those stars who never fail to impress the viewers with their acting. He has literally owned every character that he has chosen to do till now. Faysal has excelled not only as an actor in serious and comedy roles but is also one of the best morning show hosts who entertains his viewers with intelligent topics and he feels very passionately about his work. There are other people in the industry who share the name with him but Faysal Qureshi did not resort to a name change in order to stand out and to be known but he lets his work make him stand out in a crowd. He constantly keeps on experimenting with his looks and is one of those actors in the industry who seem to be getting younger with time.

Faisal QureshiFaysal Qureshi started his career as a child artist and has also performed in many films too. But for now it seems like his focus is on television and he does not intend to work in films until it is a project that has something substantial to offer. Faysal Qureshi truly got noticed when he was cast as the lead in Boota From Toba Tek Singh that aired on PTV. There was no looking back for this gifted artist after that, the offers came pouring in and very soon he had a massive fan following. It is no surprise that Faysal Qureshi was nominated four times for the best actor category in the Lux Style Awards for his plays Deewar, Umrao Jaan Ada, Harjaee and Jaey Kahaan Yeh Dil and won the Lux Style Awards for best actor and host more than five times.

Unlike many of his co stars Faysal Qureshi has not ventured into direction or production yet because according to him, “The thought of becoming a producer or director has never really appealed to me. I still feel I have far to go as far as acting is concerned”. Faysal Qureshi is not only a great actor but also a very down-to-earth person who has worked very hard to achieve all the success that he enjoys today. Faysal Qureshi has a grown up FQdaughter and when asked in an interview if he would allow his daughter to work in the industry he said that he had absolutely no peeves about it and it was solely her decision. Faysal is not completely averse to the idea of working across the border but only if the nature and caliber of the role he is offered is as good as the ones he is doing at the moment and also it does not demean his own country in any way.

Faysal Qureshi has lately raised his voice very strongly against the foreign dramas being aired on Pakistani channels but also believes that theFaisal Q Pakistani people will eventually turn to their own dramas. Faysal Qureshi also stated in one of his interviews that the Pakistani actors are as capable as their Indian counterparts but they do not get the same amount of exposure and that is something he wants to see improving. He would like that the Pakistani actors also get more exposure and only then they can prove their mettle all around the globe. He also believes that the Pakistani drama industry should come up with new ideas in order to stay ahead of the competition and not become a part of the rat race. One of the reasons Faysal Qureshi is so selective about what he does is that he thinks that he owes it to his fans because his fans trust him with making good choices.

We wish Faysal Qureshi all the best for his future and expect nothing but quality work from him. He is an asset for our industry and will continue to be so.

Coke Kahani Episode 11 – Positive Changes

0

Coke Kahani always manages to leave me speechless. It has humor as well as a concept that we can observe around us and which makes it more interesting. Rayaan and the new character Current’s bonding was a very enjoyable scene. Poor Rayaan thought that the guy on the motorcycle is coming towards him to steal his cell phone, but he realized that there is still humanity left in people and everybody in Pakistan are not as he imagined; ill mannered and selfish. There are still some people who help others just for the sake of doing a good deed and do not have an ulterior motive. He met such a person in the form of Current, the mechanic who helped him when he was stranded alone on a very dangerous road when his car broke down. For the first time, Rayaan had the desire to change people in his country instead of criticizing them. Current and his ‘fluent’ English was definitely a pleasure to watch! I am looking forward to more scenes of Current and Rayaan.
The thick headed Saad has finally realized that he likes Ruqaiya. Phew! At the speed he was going, I thought this day would never come. Zoya gives Saad some tips on ‘How to confess to a girl’ and her first tip to Saad was ‘not to behave like your own self’. Her tips were hilarious! Saad and Zoya share a cute bonding which makes you smile when they are on screen. However, Saad’s attempt to take Ruqaiya on a date was a huge flop as Ruqaiya had no idea what had come over Saad all of a sudden. The soft music, the presentable attire, the clean car and mannered behavior was very new to her and it left her boggled. And just when the poor guy was about to confess his feelings, she threw the bomb at him and told him that she was going back abroad for her Masters. Saad’s expressions on this news were mind blowing! I could not help but feel bad for him. The preview for the next episode seems hilarious. Saad goes to Ruqaiya’s mother and tell her to get him married to her daughter otherwise he will run away with her! The poor woman could not believe her ears.
We finally saw what I was waiting for so long. Mutmain Sahab and Nusrat are curious on Rayaan’s whereabouts and thinks that there is something cooking between Rayaan and Zoya. Even Maya has noticed that Rayaan and Zoya spend all of their time together and thinks something is fishy. The only one not to notice is Asfand, such an idea has not crossed his mind and he seemed surprised at the possibility. I am glad they are finally paying attention to Zoya and Rayaan. They will definitely look great together!
Asfand really needs to grow up. He wants to face all the worries alone and refuses to share his problems with anyone. This is what irritates Maya the most, and we saw a huge fight between them when she asked him to share his troubles. Maya got really upset and suddenly made the decision to go back to Florida and asked Zoya to come with her. Zoya was shocked at her sudden change of plans and started to get worried as she does not want her family to get separated again.
Asfand has got the notice from the bank and his restaurant will be sealed in a few days as he has not paid back the loan. He has resorted to the last means of saving his restaurant, that is to sell the paintings that he had inherited from his forefathers and which were very precious to him. Maya is also surprised at his decision to sell the paintings. Will he ever tell Maya about his troubles? Will Maya let go of her sudden decision to go back to Florida? I hope we get all the answers in the next episode! So keep watching Coke Kahani!

Aik Nayee Cinderella Episode 13 – Schemes and Secrets

At last we saw the story moving ahead. A lot of development was seen in this episode. Meher has started scheming again and she has managed to convince both Dado and Meesha that she has changed and wants to repent for her behavior. Meher suddenly has a ‘change of heart’ when Meesha consoles her when she was crying over Aimee. She manages to persuade Dado to allow her and Meesha to go and stay at Bano’s house for a month and fulfill Banos’ condition. But she has an ulterior motive behind this as she wants to ruin things for Meesha and make Bano realize that she cannot change or mold Meesha according to her standards and criteria for a daughter in law. Bano is also seen unhappy that Dado has agreed to the condition. She can barely tolerate Meesha but has agreed to give Meesha a chance for Mayers’ sake but she has sworn to make things difficult to Meesha. Mayer, on the other hand is seen happy and excited at his and Meesha’s upcoming wedding.
I could not judge Meesha’s sentiments in this episode. It was hard to determine whether she was happy at her dream finally coming true, or sad at losing Roman. It is important at this point for Meesha to talk to Roman and clear things between them. One thing I am extremely surprised about is Roman’s decision to marry Surraiya. Surraiya has finally managed to convince Roman to marry her through her blackmail. Poor Roman has agreed so that Meesha’s life would not get ruined. The scheming and foul woman has told everybody about her upcoming marriage to Roman. Meesha also got to hear it from Meher and it came as a huge shock to her. Roman’s image has further been reduced in Meesha’s eyes. What an ironic situation! I do not know whether to laugh at the irony or be sad at Roman’s situation. Roman has managed to get a job at Bano’s house as Mayer and Meesha’s wedding planner! I cannot help but feel pity for Roman.
Aimee and Farjad were the stars of this episode. The look extremely cute together and their scenes are always lighthearted and enjoyable. Warda Butt and Mukarram Kaleem have done a great job. Farjad has finally brought Aimee to his house. Aimee was shocked to see the huge mansion and could not help but think that she has finally managed to find her prince charming in Farjad. Shah Baba gave a very warm welcome to Aimee as he thinks that she is Meesha. We also got more insight as to why Shah Baba was so desperate to find Meesha all those years. Meesha is supposedly considered lucky for his family and he wants his son to get married to her. The surprising twist that we got to know is that Farjad and Meesha were about to get married in their childhood but it could not happen due to some turn of events. I am curious to know what really happened and how did Saifullah come in the picture? But the main question is what will happen once Shah Baba gets to know that Aimee is not the girl he has been looking for? Will Farjad leave Aimee or will he marry her against Shah Baba’s wishes?
The most hilarious scene of the episode was when Zaini was left to care for Dado. Zaini, who had not lifted a finger all her life, was seen taking care of her granny and is completely at her granny’s beck and call. It was one of the best scenes of the episode for me.
Bano has also started to place restrictions on the free spirited Meesha. She is attempting to tame a lioness but will it be possible? Meesha has had a very simple upbringing. Will she able to fulfill Bano’s criteria for a daughter in law? The preview for the next epsiode did not look convincing. Meesha faces Bano’s displeasure at whatever she attempts to do. Will Meher makes the situation worse for her? What is the secret of Meesha’s childhood that only two people know so far; Saifullah and Dado? Don’t forget to watch Aik Nayee Cinderella next week to find out!

Bari Appa Episode 18 – Best one so far

0

So far so good. This has to be my favourite episode from the whole series till now. The direction was flawless & the acting was beyond perfection. I absolutely enjoyed the whole episode, each & every scene & the dialogues as well. I have liked the drama so far but this is now turning out to be my favourite.

The best thing today was lesser taunting of Zubaida & more scenes of the rest of the family members. It is finally good to see Farmaan coming out of his shell & doing what Neelam deserves. I absolutely enjoyed watching them together after Fajr namaz. I thought Ayesha Khan looked flawlessly beautiful in the whole Islamic attire, she looked perfect & so was her acting. It’s a sigh of fresh air that finally Essa’s intervention has taken it’s toll on Farmaan & he has started acted accordingly. Sharmeen has broken the ice & has actually started to like Neelam. From all the past episodes, I liked Sharmeen & her politeness for the first time today may be just because she wasn’t being irrational & showed that she is a mature person too with some abilities to differentiate between right & wrong. She has understood it completely that what her mother talks about Neelam is mostly wrong because Neelam is everything but that.

Farmaan, after so many days has started to show his soft side while realizing completely that what he has been doing was totally wrong & unfair to his second wife. Zubaida had to put a black mark on the sweet time they both had after so many days but it was good that Farmaan did not pay so much of a heed to it. He was worried a bit because that’s his nature but Neelam tackled it brilliantly saying she is ready to take the blame for Farmaan because she can’t see him suffering. After seeing Neelam’s respect, love & concern for her husband, I thought to myself what good Farmaan must’ve done that he was rewarded with a wife like her. May be his tolerance in dealing with Zubaida paid off in terms of Neelam.

Sharmeen tried to reconcile her differences with Essa & took a first step in meeting him but Essa was rigid. He couldn’t understand Sharmeen’s gesture & blamed her once again. I thought he would react differently with much more wisdom but his reaction was clouded by his anger & he let Sharmeen down. I don’t really understand that after being in a relationship for around 6 years why do they have to play the riddles with one another? Why can’t they be up front & be more precise in dealing with one another, especially when they know about the rocky track their relationship is at? I guess they need to open up a lot more so that they can understand eachother well. They both expect a lot from eachother but do not understand, they expect that the other might listen to the silence but they fail. I hope they wind this relation quickly without any further delay or dragging.

& at last Firdous had to face what she dreaded & Adeel confessed of marrying Sharmeen. Like I said before that Adeel has no sanity of his own & acts according to Sharmeen’s suggestion. Same was the case today where he came & talked to his parents just a moment after Sharmeen told him. She should be sane enough to understand that she is kind of furious at Essa & that’s why she is using Adeel as a scapegoat. Ghazanfar, being a gentleman dealt with Firdous with patience & assured her that he will not let Sharmeen agree to marry Adeel but he was deceptive because he spoke to Sharmeen with much softness & a bit too in a convincing manner.

He can not, every time let someone else take a front seat & keep Firdous as his last priority. This is much evident now that he still has some feelings for Zubaida & a bit more soft corner for her than he has for Firdous. No doubt he has given her all the rights of being his wife but he gets carried away whenever Zubaida is in a situation. Firdous’s rant was justified because she is not happy with Sharmeen & is not ready to accept her as a daughter in law from day one that too because of Zubaida, their history, Zubaida’s behaviour & dominance. She has always been honest about how she feels about Sharmeen, so there is no point in convincing her of something which she doesn’t approve of.

Firdous did go overboard in whatever she said to Ghazanfar. The preview of next episode suggests something horrible when it comes to Firdous. I so do not want to see anything happen to her because she doesn’t deserve it as she has whole-heartedly accepted Ghazanfar as her husband & loves him a lot. I so do not want to see her dream come true where the main cause of disruption is Zubaida. I’m keeping my fingers crossed as I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers.
Zahra Mirza.

Local channels have opened new doors of entertainment for the viewers who have had been limited to the national channels if you look 15 years back. These days when we get tired of changing channels but the list doesn’t comes to an end, It must be admitted that Pakistani Media has also been flourished  in the last decade. Having more opportunities to show their talents, artists find themselves in a safer position, having a good list of options to choose as their next project. However, as a viewer, if you sit and analyze about where our drama industry is heading towards, you will notice that almost every next project is a replica of a previous hit.

By saying so, I do not mean in any way that the industry is not producing or rather introducing new storylines, in fact, a variety of dramas that have just launched or are about to, are capable of attracting huge audience on the basis of their uniqueness.

Daagh Episode 14 – Tit for Tat

0

‘You reap what you sow’
This quote applies to Aqeela in this show. She forced her son to marry Deeba and now she is suffering from the consequences of her haste decision. The Deeba she loved and who had always held a very high opinion in her eyes has finally showed her true colors. She is not the same Deeba who is constantly working and looking after everybody. That was all a facade to win Aqeela and Murad over so that she could get married to Murad and when she was successful in her mission, she started showing her true face.
The whole episode was based on the change seen in Deeba’s attitude. The very first morning after her marriage she started treating Rehana like her servant and when Rehana went back to her house, she treated her mother in law in the same way. Her treatment with Aqeela is rude and disrespectful and Aqeela couldn’t help but compare Deeba and Emama. Emama had always been compliant and respectful, despite her mother in laws’ taunts and harsh treatments towards her. I did not feel an ounce of pity for Aqeela when she was seen crying as she was left all alone in the house when Deeba and Murad had gone out for dinner. She has ruined Emama’s life and now her life has become miserable.
Emama does not want to return to Murad’s house but Atiqa talks some sense into her. I loved the bonding of the two sisters in this episode. Atiqa encouraged Emama to stand up for her rights and not to let go of Murad so easily. She is the first wife of Murad and will always have a higher position than Deeba in Murad’s house. It’s about time and Emama should stand up for her rights and speak up against the treatment she has been given so far in Murad’s house. Another heartwarming scene was when Emama introduced her daughters to her father and their adorable bonding was a treat to watch. Emama’s father is giving them the love that he was never able to give to her own daughters. I am glad that her father has finally realized his mistake after so many years. As the saying goes ‘Better late than never’
I was completely disappointed in Murad in today’s episode. His attitude was inexcusable. First he let Deeba take over his and Emama’s bedroom and when his mother told him to bring Emama back; he was not willing to bring her back. How can he be upset with Emama after what he did to her? I cannot believe this is the same Murad who loved Emama so much and could do anything for her. Atiqa was absolutely right when she said that Murad is worse than their father. At least he did not marry again by making his daughters an excuse. Emama’s father always desired a son but he still fulfilled his responsibilities towards his daughters. Murad did, however went to pick Emama from her father’s house. I could not help but notice the invisible wall standing between both of them. Both were reluctant to speak to each other as they had nothing to say to each other. Murad should be guilty but instead we saw a different Murad altogether. I am sure Emama will go back to Murad’s house now for the sake of her daughters but will Murad behave the same way with her as before? I am sure about one thing though, he would never be happy with Deeba after living with Emama for so many years. Emama is a caring and self less person while Deeba is selfish and cunning. The contrast between their personalities is too stark and Murad and Aqeela are slowly noticing it.
Deeba is also seen scheming again. She wants to make Emama jealous and this is the reason why she told Murad to bring her back to the house. Will Murad ever speak up and stop Deeba? Will Deeba create more problems for her and her daughters? What will happen if she gives birth to a son? A lot of questions need to be answered.
Overall, it was a very entertaining episode. I was hooked till the end. Mehar Bano, Fahad Mustafa, Sana Askari and Shama Askari all have performed brilliantly. I am eagerly waiting for the next episode now!

Tanhaiyan Naye Silsilay – The Finale

Tanhiyaan aur Mohabeitin azal se jari hei aur abad tuk jari rahe gi

Raaston mein andheri atay rahe gay pur charagh bhi jalte rahe gay

Faraan Uncle summed up the essence of life in these two lines, life is all about hope and despair; there are times when we laugh so much that our bellies hurt and others when we are so disillusioned that we don’t know what the next moment holds for us but having faith that there will betnsss better times is what helps everyone go through life. After years of living a very difficult life Zain finally got his family and friends back. Faraan uncle’s faith in relationships was restored and his loss redeemed. Zeenia and Zarak realized that life is about so much more than proving your point, putting oneself first and taking revenge. Sanya holds friendship before everything else and Kabacha will continue loving Sanya just like he always has.

The light hearted family scenes were all wonderfully scripted and acted out to perfection. The way the entire family overhears all the conversations and very actively participates in convincing Zeenia to stop Zarak from going back was beautifully done. I have to say that like many other previous episodes Syra Yusef yet again stole the show today. Every girl should have a sister like Serena in her life, who is wise, fun, intelligent and caring. The way Serena explains to Zeenia how relationships work in Pakistan made for few of my favorite lines, ‘yahan aisa hi hota hai, dusru pe haq jitana, dusru se apna huq mangna, beghair bataye ghur puhanch jana, khana mangna….apni murzi ke kupre pehnana…yeh sub yahan ke culture mei hai, is se apnayat zahir hoti hai”.

TNSI have to say that I wanted this finale to be a little bit more about everyone than the main focus being on Zeenia and Zarak mainly because Alishba Yusef and Shehryar Munawar failed to connect with me and although there were few times when I wanted the two of them to be together but my heart was not with them, the way it was with Kishmish/Serena and Kabacha/Sanya. The way it was done was more fun than touching because of the reason I mentioned already. The Zeenia/Zarak confrontation had the potential to be extremely powerful but the scene completely fell flat because of the lack of chemistry between the two artists.

My favorite scene of this finale had to the very brief King Kong and pink panther scene in the end because it reminded me of the old times and the way Sanya and Zain used to be. I wish we could have seen more of that. Seeing the family back together again, happy and smiling with all the problems sorted out surely brought a smile to my face.

I really wanted Sanya and Kabacha to end up together but honestly speaking I am TNSglad it happened the way it did because I was having a very tough time imagining the two of them being married. Friendship no doubt is a very strong bond and one that can see people through thick and thin. Sanya holds Kabacha’s friendship and the way he feels about her very dear and she confesses that she missed him when he was away.

Overall I really enjoyed every episode of Tanhaiyan Naye Silsilay right from the start and I am going to miss Serena and Kishmish and Kabacha and Sanya in particular. It was a simple story told in a very honest way. I have to say that Haseena Moin, Mohammad Ahmed and Jaleel Akhtar did a commendable job of carrying the Tanhaiyan silsilay forward and the effort Marina Khan put into directing the show was quite evident. For me all the old artists were a delight to watch all over again but Behroze Sabzwari in particular managed to achieve the impossible by brining Kabacha alive on screen after so many years. Kabacha always was and always will be my most favorite character. Out of all the new additions I have to say that Syra Yusef was the most impressive, she was simply adorable as Serena and totally won my heart.

A very special thanks to the entire team of Tanhaiyaan Naye Silsilay for brining this fun filled family drama to our television screens. I have to give special credit to the writers for very gracefully tackling with the ‘disappearance’ of Zara. I am going to miss this play; it was short, sweet and gave me a break from all the routine dramas.

Zindagi Gulzar Hai Episode 8 – Simply Flawless

zarooonThis episode was picture perfect right from the first scene to the last one, In fact it was so mesmerizing that I am still spell-bound and am hoping that I will do a fine job with writing this review! This is one episode which I am going to watch over and over again. Although all the scenes in today’s episode were enthralling but dare I say that the most captivating part of this episode had to be Zaroon’s live performance. The overall atmosphere was perfect, the crowd looked very ‘genuine’ too and the response was equally honest, it did not look like anything that was staged or directed but seemed more like a scene from a real concert.

Today’s episode was simply flawless; the acting, direction and the dialogues all deserve special praise. Now we know for sure that when Zaroon is out to get something (someone!) he won’t care about what people think about him, that particular rule only applies to all the women in his life. When Zaroon openly supported Kashaf in the class and then literally begged her to accept his gift, I found it difficult to believe that this was the same person who lectured her sister for coming home late saying that she should be more careful because she had to consider what the servants in the house may feel about her coming late! Zaroon could not care less what the entire college thought about him going out of his way to be friends with Kashaf, I have to say he is very focused indeed! No matter how often Asmara tells Zaroon to stop being so “nice’ to Kashaf, there is absolutely no stopping him. After all he has a “deadline” to meet! So what if people around him think ke Zaroon Kashaf mei buhat dilchaspi leta hai. Fawad Khan is spot on as Zaroon and was brilliant as usual.

asmaraFor a change today it was delightful to see Asmara too since she got exactly what she deserved both from Zaroon and Kashaf. Kashaf telling Asmara off was music to my ears and it was good to see Kahsaf showing that kind of confidence even though she does not think very highly of herself when she compares herself to Asmara. Kashaf clearly says to her sister that Asmara was perfect in every way, “Usey tameez ki zarurat nahi hai, tameez ke beghair bhi vo buhat khush hei”. Kashaf’s opinion about the rich people in the world is almost laughable and sometimes too cute. I have never enjoyed Kahsaf/Sidra scenes more, the way Kashaf shares everything with her sister was so relatable. I am sure there are so many sisters out there who share every tiny detail of their university/college life with each other like this on daily basis. Sanam Saeed is doing a great job of playing a rather difficult character; I absolutely love her as Kashaf.

Zaroon’s dialogue about ‘aqalmundi wali muskurahat’ was also one that made me smile. He thinks he is so clever and is doing a brilliant job of zghfooling everyone around him, not to mention that in the process for now he is making a complete fool of himself. Kashaf is giving him something to think about and both of them are giving each other sleepless nights. Today Kashaf/Zaroon were at their best and it was well worth the wait.

I am glad that Rafia did not make a very big deal out of Kashaf coming home late with one of her male class fellows. How satisfying was the scene when Kashaf refuses to sit in the front seat with Zaroon and after that the call from Asmara just added to Zaroon’s wounds. I am waiting to see how Zaroon deals with the situation he has got himself involved in now.

The scenes with Murtaza and his family went to show the stark difference between the way he treats Rafia and his daughters and the manner in which he treats his second wife and Hammad.

Today’s episode was extremely engaging and “rewarding”! All the actors did a commendable job and the direction was impressive. I am anxiously waiting to see how the story unfolds now.

Mirat-ul-Uroos Episode 3 & 4 – Review

0

After watching the latest two episodes, all I can say is that I think the real story is going to start only after the two odd couples get married. Although everything that happened in these episodes reflected perfectly all that happens in houses where children are about to get married but I have to say that for now the show lacks the must watch factor and there hardly anything novel about the story of the setting for now. All the actors are very well suited in their roles. Mikaal Zulfiqar in particular is absolutely brilliant in every role he opts for and it is plain to see that acting comes very naturally to him. Ahsan Khan is equally convincing as the careless, lazy and immature Hashim. Hammad isn’t the mama’s boy that he appears to be and that is actually good to know because the character seems more real and interesting now. It seems like Hammad instantly fell for Ayza and Ayza really seemed interested in him too. Akbari’s demands are met quite soon and the stage is all set for marriage.

aminahIt was further proven in these latest episodes that Ayza had been spoiled to the core by Akbari, she is self-centered, manipulative and irresponsible. Her character may have seemed interesting in the first two episodes but now that we know that there is absolutely nothing about Ayza that is even remotely nice, it is just plain disappointing and the character obviously is not the least bit likeable. Girls like Ayza who have never been told right from wrong and are used to having things their way and getting just about everything they want without ever trying to work hard for it learn their lessons the hard way. What good is a life without rules to guide you? Actually it is much easier to raise children the way Akbari did and much difficult to teach them discipline. What I cannot understand is that how can Askari expect Ayza to be any different when she knows her sister so well? When Ayza demands to visit her to be In Laws’ house, even though Rafia pretends to be very comfortable with the idea in front of Akbari but she discusses with Askari just how inappropriate that is and how disappointed she is in Ayza. Even then Askari does not reconsider the proposal maybe because she is too nice! But still this was highly unbelievable. I guess when you go looking for rishtas outside the family you tend to be more critical but when it comes to your own relatives you tend to be more relaxed and positive.

murRafia kept on raving about her new bahu and gives her credit for everything that goes right in their lives. The women in both houses want a lavish wedding ceremony even if it means using all the savings, the men disagree but there isn’t much they can do about it. This is something I have seen happening quite often actually; most of the women do tend to get carried away when it comes to getting their kids married. And the men don’t have much of a say

Hashim finally gets a job thanks to a sifarish and starts complaining soon afterwards. It is evident that Aima is the mature one in the relationship. I am looking forward to how things turn out once Hammad and Ayza start communicating, I can foresee Ayza dictating everything to Hammad.

I must mention something here that was initially observed by a fellow reviewer and I have to say that I muutotally agree with him. Has someone else noticed that there seems to be so much “khana peena” in our plays lately. Take these two episodes for instance, the second episode ended on the dinner table and the third one started with daadi asking Ayza for tea. Then we saw Ayza’s parents having tea. Later Rafia, Asghari and her son were having tea and fruits. Hashim and Aima had their conversation over a cup of tea. Half of the time is either spent in the kitchen making food and the other half consuming it. And I must say that this whole “khana peena” affair has been taken to a whole new level in Zindagi Gulzar Hai from the ever-present biscuits on Sir Ibrar’s table, to the biryanis that Zaroon’s family devour and the cereals and fruits that Zaroon and family snack on! Don’t the artists get lunch or snack breaks or they have to consume the food they need to during the shoots? Silly question I know but all the food in some of the plays is actually proving to be slightly distracting and unnecessary too. Am I the only one who feels this way? Do share you thoughts about all the ‘khana peena” in our plays and all the munching on fruits, rice, snacks and especially tea we see in our dramas!

Kahi Unkahi Episode 11 – Sherry-Anam Story

0

So today’s episode was all about Anam & Sherry. I am glad that Sherry has started to re-think about his decision of marrying Anam. He is still confused but he needs a certain push from the inside to come to a final decision about what he has to do. The episode today didn’t contain much because it was revolving around only one aspect & that was the relation of Anam & Sherry.

Starting scene was really cute especially when he addressed Zoya as Zoyee. It is pretty evident that the feelings Sherry had in his adolescent years are rekindled after he has laid eyes on Zoya but he is too confused or may be a bit scared because he knows the high standards of his Father. He has actually started to like her after getting to know her better as a person but he has Anam who is hovering over his mind currently.

Sherry’s mother, who clearly told Mariam about how she feels for Anam is quiet at the moment. I wonder why is she agreeing to this relation whereas she doesn’t like Anam at all. She being a mother should talk to Sherry in person & tell him that Anam is not a suitable match for a guy like him. I fail to understand her ignorance lately. Mr. Kamal is all in for this comittment because he likes the self-centered Anam a lot. It is kind of disappointing to see that the parents of Sherry are so unaware of what their son is actually going through. Mrs. Kamal did speak to Sherry about the confusions one goes through while deciding for marriage but she should’ve talk clearly about his choice.

Sherry couldn’t put in his word about the matter too & is acting like someone who doesn’t know what is going on. He should should his parents that he is not interested in Anam but then as I said he is kind of waiting for a push. On the other hand Anam’s mother has told her what she should be doing to grab this opportunity because they are kind of insecure. At one point they say they are completely confident about the abilities of their daughter but on the other they are totally insecure. It is kind of sickening to see them let their daughter on loose to grab a guy who belongs to a good family. It’s weird to see the things people can do or make their daughters do.

Although, we didn’t see much of Zoya but I always find it pleasurable to see the interactions of Zoya & her father. They have very simple dialogues but the relation they share is unique & totally better when compared to those who claim to have it all. They might no doubt each & everything but do not have the time to pay attention to what their kids are going through. I wish to see more of Zoya from now on. I feel the next episode is going to bring a major change in Sherry’s choice & he will reject Anam. Got to see it happen, I so can’t wait. :)

Urdu 1 Has Legal Rights to air Foreign Content-What About the Local Channels?

0

By the end of 2012, we saw an alarming situation within the drama industry where the producers, celebrities and artists found the airing of foreign content a clear violation of their rights. News channels supported the local celebrities dedicating their program slots to the topic. We also saw artists protesting at Karachi press club demanding their rights as an actor. It was strange to find the TV channels that aired these dramas stayed neutral and avoid coming into the limelight by not talking about the issue. Geo TV still hasn’t passed any comments as a retaliation to the fingers been raised on it. However, it is Urdu 1s’ official who have finally given his words on the matter.

Coke Kahani Episode 10 – Happy Moments!

0

The highlight of the episode was Mutmain Sahab. I must say, Muhammad Ahmed sir has done a great job. He has not only written a very good story but acted brilliantly as well. Nusrat is extremely happy to join university but Mutmain Sahab is feeling left ignored and left out. His jealousy when he saw Nusrat’s new classmate, Junaid was a treat to watch. The most hilarious scene was when his imagination ran wild and he imagined both of them together in a garden. He kept an eye on Nusrat and Junaid while they were studying and did the most annoying things to interrupt them. Poor Junaid finally got fed up and went away. It was without any doubt, the best scene of the episode!
Can Saad be dumber? He went to clear things to Murtaza and ended up telling all his feelings about Ruqaiya to Murtaza. Murtaza was smart enough to understand that he clearly likes Ruqaiya and told him to tell about his feelings to Ruqaiya. Saad was shocked when Rayaan told him that he is a dolt not to realize that he loves Ruqaiya. The problem with Saad is that he is scared of being rejected by Ruqaiya. Will he finally confess his feelings now that he has realized them?
Jugnoo has agreed to teach Beydil and help him become a chef but he has kept certain conditions. It was like watching two enemies on the same field when Jugnoo started teaching Beydil. I hope Beydil is smart enough to learn from him carefully and make his future brighter. Maria convinced Jugnoo to teach him as she wants to marry Beydil when he is financially stable. But the problem is will the pea brained Beydil ever realize how much Maria likes him? Currently, his brain is only filled with shayari and his flirting techniques.
I am really surprised that Maya agreed to stay for another 2 months in Pakistan. I think there is a hidden motive behind it. Maya and Asfand are finally developing a bond and Maya has seen a ray of hope of being together with Asfand again as he is a changed man now. I hope Zoya’s dream is fulfilled and this family gets back together soon.
The father son bonding was an adorable scene. Mutmain Sahab was angry and hurt that Rayaan did not remember his birthday and gave him an emotional speech but Rayaan surprised him by getting a gift for him. He told his father to join the gym and become as physically fit as Junaid so that he would no longer be jealous of him. Mutmain Sahab was embarrassed to know that his son knows about his endeavors to annoy Nusrat’s classmate. These three are the perfect family!
I was surprised and happy to see Mahira Khan as a guest appearance in this episode. She played the girl who rejected Saad and ended up giving him a slap when he asked her out. It was an extremely funny scene; Poor Saad was rejected by a lot of girls. The preview for the next epsiode seems interesting. Saad is finally developing the guts to propose Ruqaiya before she goes back abroad for her masters. Asfand has more problems coming up his way as his restaurant would be sealed any day because he is unable to pay back his loan. Will they be able to save the restaurant? Tune into Coke Kahani next week to find out.

Aik Nayee Cinderella Episode 12 – Surprising Twists

This week’s episode had shocking twists and turns. I did not expect all these events to occur and they came as a huge surprise. The change in Meesha’s behavior is astonishing. Previously, she was always compliant to her Dado’s orders and demand but now she had taken the biggest decision of her life without her consent. Dado is heartbroken and cannot understand the reason behind the changed attitude of Meesha. Meesha is thinking emotionally and has only one motive behind her decision; to prove to Roman that she is not as naive as he thinks and he cannot play with her feelings. She wants to gain back herself respect that she thinks is broken by Roman whom she trusted the most. Maya Ali was brilliant in this episode. The sudden transition from a lively, innocent girl to a serious girl, whose spirit has been broken, is very well played by her.
Bano is scheming to stop Meesha from marrying Mayer. She had laid down a condition in front of Mayer and Meesha; she wants Meesha to stay at their place so that she can change her ways and polish her so that she can be introduced in their society. Bano knows that Dado would never agree to this. I absolutely love the bonding between Meesha and her Dado. She knew she was wrong to hurt her Dado and take the most important decision of her life without her Dado’s consent and happiness. The emotional scene between Dado and Meesha when she comes back was heartwarming.
Meher was seen taunting Dado about Meesha’s decision to go and stay at Bano’s house and gloating that her daughters would never do such a thing. She was pointing finger at Meesha’s upbringing which broke Dado’s heart. The irony was that at that very moment her two daughters were not in the house. Aimee had run away with Farjad while Zaini was in the police station as she was caught drunk. This additional part about Zaini getting drunk was not at all needed in this episode. Aimee and Farjad scenes once again made me laugh. You cannot help but smile at Aimee’s sweetness and innocence. Warda Butt’s acting has made Aimees’ character even more special.
Mayer finally finds out what kind of treatment Meesha gets at her house and wants to get married to her immediately. This shocks both Bano and Meesha but Bano controls the situation and delays the wedding by keeping her condition. I was happy to see that Mayer was not in favour of her mother’s decision to change Meesha, he loves her just the way she is. We also saw Mayer giving a cold look to Roman when he saw him and Meesha together. Meesha’s refusal to acknowledge Roman as her friend hurt Roman’s feelings. I could not help but feel sad for him.
I cannot believe Surraiya would fall so low and blackmail Roman to stay with her. I was disgusted by her behavior and poor Roman gave in to her blackmail just to save Meesha’s dreams. Roman also tried to talk to Meesha but she was in no mood to hear him. He is puzzled by the sudden change in her behavior and wants to know the reason behind it. If only they would talk and clear things up all this confusion and misunderstanding would go away!
The preview for the next episode seems interesting. Meher and Meesha have shifted to Bano’s house and Bano is treating Meesha very harshly. It seems like Bano is up to something! What is her new plan and why has she made Roman the wedding planner for Meesha and Mayer’s wedding? When will Meesha’s past be revealed? I hope we get all the answers soon.

Mera Pehla Pyaar Episode 10 & 11 – Review

0

So I thought of combining episodes 10 and 11 because really episode 10 was all about Hira’s over dramatized ‘accident.’ Seriously the kid fell down while running and got a bruise on her forehead… it’s not like she God forbid was actually hit by a car or even got a concussion. She saw Maira and ran after her…that’s it. 28 out of 39 minutes of that episode revolved around the ‘accident.’ What I don’t understand is how Maira doesn’t ask to call Hira’s family immediately? Theek hai, she felt bad that Hira fell because she couldn’t hear her, she took Hira to the Dr’s and Hira got a band aid. So why did Maira, instead of calling Hira’s family, take her out for a shake and then take her back home? I realize the ultimate goal was for her and Taha to meet in these extenuating circumstances but seriously? She gets the day off of school so she can ‘rest?’ Dado goes off on Nano because Ayesha didn’t call when Hira ‘ki Ma ko uske paas hona chahiye tha?’ Khuda na khawsta she wasn’t in the hospital overnight or had surgery. Even Maira kept asking Taha for forgiveness because Hira was hurt. And Hira is a pretty intelligent kid; she could have asked to have her family called.  They could have met Maira at the hospital.

Anyways the ‘chance’ meeting of Maira and Taha finally happens. As nice as it was, I really think the ‘accident’ took that scene’s thunder away. That scene should have been something to remember, not over shadowed by a silly bruise. Unfortunately it was poorly directed and something that the audience had been waiting for for so long came and went with the blink of an eye.

The only other thing that happened in this episode was that Taha wanted to get Hira a mobile phone so that Ayesha can easily keep in touch with her…seriously? Ayesha calls Hira once every 2-3 weeks. Dado was absolutely right when she said no. A 9 year old has absolutely no need for a cell phone. I’m very glad that it was written this way because for some odd reason it has become a norm for kids as young as 8 having cell phones in Pakistan. Dado is right…do parents really think that theirs’ is the only call the kids will receive?

Anyways, the episode ends with the doorbell ringing and in episode 11 we find out that it is Maira with her son Bilal and I’m wondering why? Why would Maira take her 11 year old son to meet her college best friend? I again realize that they had to meet again with the kids, but this was not the way to do it. Bilal clearly was not happy to be there and Dado wasn’t helping insinuating that he was rude. The other unbelievable part was that when Hira takes Bilal to see the gold fish all of a sudden, Maira has a drastic hairstyle change. It’s not like she just put her hair or something, she had a fish braid…that takes a lot of time. Extremely unrealistic.

Anyways, Maira tells Taha how her brother and bhabi (from hell) forced her nikah with her Bhabi’s cousin Irfan (enter Ejaz Aslam) the day of the farewell party. Irfan was a verbally and physically abusive towards her. We also see in the flash back scenes that for some reason he didn’t think Bilal was his son. One day out of anger he divorces her. Luckily her brother had given her a flat that she has been living in ever since with her son. First of all Ejaz Aslam doesn’t at all suit the role of Irfan. He is too old and the botox and jet-black dyed hair plugs just make him look older. Unlike Faysal Qureshi, Ejaz Aslam unfortunately is not aging gracefully. They should have gotten someone like Imran Aslam to play that role. Second, Maira got married 12 years ago, Bilal is 11, but when Irfan divorces her he mentions that in the last 9 years she has never been thankful to him for anything. The math doesn’t add up.

Ziad is back…he shows up at Taha’s and Dado is not happy at all. He is still single but apparently now wants to settle down…conveniently enough, he meets Zara at Taha’s office. Waise not a bad couple.

The episode ends with Taha running into Maira at the mall and they end up having coffee, at which time Maira asks about Ayesha and finds out Taha too is divorced. How cute and convenient J

In all honesty episodes 10 and 11 could have been just one episode if the editing and direction was done properly. I have no idea why they chose to do this. Mera Pehla Pyar has consistently been a good play to watch so I hope this was just a ‘thing’ and not the beginning of the end because that would be really disappointing.

Novel-Based Dramas and Detailed Promos – Killing Half Of The Fun?

0

Let me start by confessing that I do not read novels but even a non reader like me knows the gist of the story of a play that is based on a novel or even one that is based on stories that get published in Urdu digests thanks to all the online discussions as well as those which I have with friends and family. I can’t help but go through all the drama discussions on daily basis even though I may not be an active part of them. There have been dramas that got me really excited, I remember when Shehr-e-Zaat was about to go on air I was really looking forward to it because the promos looked very intriguing and it was also going to be Mahira Khan’s first play after Hamsafar. But gradually by reading the discussions under the promo videos in particular and the ones I had with a few family members who read novels, I could easily make out what the story was going to be about; a girl who was not inclined towards religion to begin with goes through a complete transformation because of what life puts her through. People even mentioned the scenes they wanted to see in particular and others wondered how a novel which was very short was going to be turned into a 20 plus episodes play. When the play finally went on air it got a great response but the constant comparison with the novel was nothing short of annoying. Let me add that I do not blame the viewers for drawing such comparisons because that is bound to be their instinctive response. A non reader like me should jump to the idea of getting the opportunity of watching novels which are so renowned on screen because otherwise I would have completely missed out on them but because of some reasons that I have already mentioned and others which I am going to mention now, I think it is a good time to stop making plays based on novels and on stories taken from digests.

Firstly, people who have read these novels have very high expectations from the plays based on them. Many times the plays do not come up to the expectations and people feel more led down than they would be otherwise.

Secondly, readers like the novels the way they are and do not want to see any changes being made in them. A novel is usually very short and a play is much longer so it is essential to add additional characters and some sidetracks which people don’t often appreciate. The readers may not warm up to the new characters and the addition in the original story.

Thirdly, the constant comparisons with the novel are inevitable which result from the expectations of course, kill the fun for even those people who have not read the novel. While watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai I am constantly being reminded of what I am missing out on by those people who have read the novel and so often I am tempted to read the novel, which I am not going to of course at least not while the drama is on air. I think when you read the novel, the story unfolds gradually and so do the different shades of the characters and that is when you fall in love with the characters bit by bit and enjoy the twists and turns. Falling in love twice with characters maybe very hard and is not just the same watching the whole thing dramatized. I am not saying that no one enjoys these dramas, There are many people (who have read the novels) who enjoy these novel based dramas too and enjoy watching their favorite stars play the characters on screen.

Fourthly and most importantly for me (since I do not read novels), novel based dramas have no suspense; one can’t keep wondering what is going to happen next because most of the people already tell you what it is going to be. So you already you know the story and the characters all you have to do is to sit back and watch a plot you already know too well unfold on screen. For me most of the fun lies in sitting on the edge of my seat and speculating what the next turn of events will be.

Enough of talking about novel based dramas let’s talk about those dramas which are not based on novels or stories from digests but are especially written for television. Pakistani drama industry is blessed with very gifted writers who have tons of potential. But many of the dramas that are based on original scripts too lose half their charm when every single twist and turn is shown in the promos and even some of the OSTs tell you half of the story. What is the point of penning down an original script when the entire story will be given away in the promos? The people who are responsible for making the promos should be very careful not to give the entire story away. The promos should be short, sweet and enticing but at the same time keep the suspense alive. Who would want to watch an entire play when most of the story can be followed by watching the promos that come before the play and those that come afterwards too? I must give credit to whoever is responsible for making the promos of Bari Apa for keeping them short and sweet and even very often misleading too. The what-is-going-to-happen-next factor matters a lot to me and I really do not appreciate it when you can easily predict what is going to happen in the next episode due to detailed promos.

I was talking to a very close friend Zubeida the other day about novel based dramas and she rightly pointed out that our writers are greatly endowed and they have oodles of new ideas to share but it seems like it is the channels who want to make dramas based on novels. One of the reasons can be that these novels are already popular and automatically ensure a certain fan following so the channels do not have to work extra hard on advertising them. Do you want to see more dramas based on novels and stories that have already been published in digests? And have there been times when detailed promos ruined the drama watching experience for you? Do share your thoughts.

Marina Khan has always been my favorite, in fact I gave grown up following her ‘Dhoop Kinare’, Tanhaiyyan and since then, Marina has always been on the top of the list.

Bari Appa Episode 17 – Move On Please!

0

Today’s episode was again on the similar pace & I am kind of disappointed by seeing no such progress in the story. It seems the story is stuck from the last 4 episodes now. Few of the scenes seemed unnecessarily stretched. The end of the episode was interesting with something to look forward to.

Zubaida; as usual, is against Neelam. She is not entertaining the fact that Sharmeen took sides with Neelam too. Sharmeen is the only one till now who has felt some pity for Neelam because of her diligence when it comes to their family & her tolerance when she is being cussed. But Zubaida was not at all amused by the fact that Sharmeen mentioned it all in front of her. I guess seeing it all happening again & again is monotonous & one can’t say much about it because Zubaida has shown all her weaknesses which she carried behind the façade of being a head-strong & ‘honest’ woman. She is equally good at scheming & plotting too.

I thought it would be the limit for Neelam to see Farmaan indirectly taunting her for not taking care of Zubaida, Sharmeen taunting her about the home & the property, Zubaida trying to tell her indirectly that there is no need of any other person when she & her husband are together. Neelam took a good step in talking her heart out to Essa because at the moment he is the only sane person who can understand what she is going through & actually feels for her. But I guess Neelam should take a stand as well either politely or strongly, but she must do something on her own because weeping in seclusion won’t do any good to her & she will be oppressed.

I totally didn’t enjoy the scene of Adeel & Sharmeen today as I thought it wasn’t necessary & even their encounter with Essa & Sharmeen’s confession about her affair with Adeel that too in anger. I find it odd that Sharmeen uses Adeel’s name whenever she deems fit & Adeel acts as a stooge of hers or is so blindly smitten by her that a distant green signal from Sharmeen is considered as a life-saving opportunity . Sharmeen has totally disappointed because the way her character has un-winded is shocking. I find her irrational opportunist who just wants to turn things the way she wants to whenever she finds a chance. For now I am not at all interested in seeing what happens to the trio of Adeel-Sharmeen-Essa just because of the lady in between. Plus I feel Zubaida has failed as a parent because all this while she was so busy in ruling her brother’s, sister’s & mother’s lives that she forgot she had a daughter to take care of too. I recalled what I thought after seeing the first episode that she is the one who is acting totally perfect but as the story will move on we will see she has imperfections within her house & this is exactly what we are seeing. Sharmeen can claim in front of Zubaida that Adeel is her cousin but she can not utter in front of her mother that she wants to go for an outing with her bestfriend/cousin? It shows what sort of an attention Zubaida has paid to her ONLY child.

Finally coming to something which we were all waiting for. “Essa-Zubaida confrontation”. Essa was completely spot on & precise when it came to dealing with the situation of her sister. He didn’t beat around the bush & was to the point. I absolutely enjoyed the dialogues as they were filled with mild taunts yet were sharp enough to leave a mark. Farmaan needed that reality check in what he was doing. & for the first time I felt the ice broke & Farmaan started seeing around apart from the veil of Zubaida which he had wrapped around his eyes. He was actually feeling bad for Neelam & realized what he had been doing was wrong because Neelam didn’t deserve all this after how she has taken care of Farmaan & his extended family.

The flick of Firdous was one again appeasing to see. Her unnecessary haul over the dream she saw was amusing. But right now she has to finally face what she was dreading as Adeel has declared about his feelings for Sharmeen. I can’t wait to see more of their situation & I wish Adeel improves his acting because he looks like a Robotic-Zombie who is expressionless be it terms of facial or vocal expressions.

Please share your opinions too. :)

Daagh Episode 13 – Heart wrenching Episode!

0

I have only one word for the episode: Heart wrenching!
This episode completely belongs to Mehar Bano. I was completely taken aback by her brilliant performance when she entered the house and saw her husband getting married. Her screams tore through everyone’s heart and I had tears in my eyes during this scene. Only a handful of actors have the power to make viewers cry, and I did not expect Mehar to act so well in her very first serial. Kudos to her!
Murad has finally given into her mothers’ pressure and agreed to marry Deeba. Her mother’s constant emotional blackmailing and demand for a grandson made him take this huge decision. A moment of weakness made him take such a big step which shattered Emama’s trust and belief in him. It was crude of him to marry without Emama’s consent. He did not even bother to inform her about his second marriage. His second marriage came as a very huge shock to Emama as he had promised her that he would never marry for a second time. He has now promised Emama that he would love her and her daughters like before and nothing will change, but the question is: Will he be able to keep his promise?
It is evident that he has no feelings for Deeba but his attitude towards her has changed drastically. Previously, he could not stand her cooking for him or taking care of him and he had only one feeling for her; annoyance. Now he is polite to her and appreciates her for taking care of him and her daughters. Even when he is with Deeba, he cannot help but think about Emama. He is feeling guilty but at the same time, his hands are bound by his need for a son and the demands of his mother.
Rehana was a total disappointment in this episode. She should have taken a stand for Emama and should have tried harder to stop this wedding. Emama has done so much for her, she had given her the most precious thing; her daughter Soha. It was useless to talk to her mother but she could have tried to put some sense in Murad. Rehana’s mother in law is still not ready to accept Soha as her grandchild. Her attitude towards Soha is completely unacceptable.
On the bright side, I was extremely glad to see the changed attitude of Emama’s father. He has finally realized what a blessing it is to have daughters and how wrong he was to think of them as a burden all his life. I really liked this dialogue spoken by him:
‘Yeh betiyaan na hoti to yeh duniya veraan hojati’ How true!
He also asks Emama if she is really happy with Murad as her eyes tell a different story altogether. She quickly managed to make an excuse and change the topic. Murad’s attitude is far from polite towards her. His sudden coldness is making Emama disturbed and upset as Murad has always been polite and loving towards her. Her father also advised Emama to never treat her daughters like he did. He believes that Murad is a very different person and his mentality would be different from his. I could not help but think how wrong he is!
I was also surprised to see Emama’s eldest daughter. She is way too mature for her age. She looks after all her sisters so well and talks and thinks like a grownup. She respects her Dadi even though her attitude is cold towards her. Emama’s upbringing reflects in her daughter’s behavior and attitude.
Emama has decided to leave Murad’s house and go back to live with her father. Emama’s anger is completely justified. It was wrong of Murad to take Emama for granted and not even bother to take her consent before getting married. I do not think she will be able to stay angry or upset with Murad for long though. Murad’s mother has a very high opinion of Deeba but I have a feeling her true face will be out in front of her very soon and that is when she will realize Emama’s importance. I am eagerly waiting for the next episode now. Will Murad be able to convince Emama to come back once Emama’s anger subsides?

Tanhaiyaan Naye Silsilay Episode 12 – The Secret Is Out

Dilon mei jo phul khile unhe chupanay nahi chahyeh….Waada torne se agr dosti bachti ho, koye kasam torne se agur zindagi bachti ho tu sochna nahi chahyeh.

Wow what beautiful and moving dialogues, it was like listening to heart warming poetry and they were delivered perfectly by Asif Raza Mir in particular. This was a moving episode right from the very first fiery scene till the end. Zerena’s confrontation with her father revealed the secret in the box and it was no surprise that the box contained Zara’s pictures and memories. The reason Zain held the box so close to him was that he never got over the guilt he felt because of how he did not work on his relationship with Zara and also because he still loved Zara dearly. Now we know the reason behind Zeenia’s cold and very often offensive attitude towards Zain. Zara who was very afraid of living alone was left to deal with everything on her own with no relatives to rely on. Even if Zara had relatives around she was not the one to depend on anyone. Zara did not learn anything from the mistakes she committed in the past and that is the reason she kept herself distant even from Sanya because Zara always depended on her own self for resolving her problems and until those problems got resolved she shut herself from the world. When Zain told everyone that Zara started taking anti depressants without prescription, my first instinct was how was that possible and Faraan uncle asked that question too. So who was it in Pakistan who was sending Zara the pills?

Serena was mostly away from home so all of what Zain told everyone was completely new to her. And that has to be the reason why she stayed so carefree and bubbly, ignorance is bliss. Zerena saw her mother going through such a difficult time and also saw the way her father treated her therefore she was right in not being able to forgive Zain. But at the same time Zeenia never shared any of this with Serena, which just goes to show how much she loves her sister. She did not want Serena to be affected by what was happening in the house. Zeenia only saw the fights between her parents but never knew about her mother’s medical condition, so she did not know just how hard her father fought to get Zara treated.

Zain’s conversation with Sanya brought tears to my eyes. Asif Raza Mir and Marina Khan both were absolutely brilliant today. Zain’s love for Zara and the way he explained everything was beautifully scripted. Zeenia finally realizes what her father went through and how wrong she was in doubting him. I just hope that Zeenia does not commit the same mistake that Zara did and manages to put her feelings for Zarak before her ego.

The Serena/Kishmish meeting was directed to perfection; the rose petals on the floor and the conversation that followed brought a smile to my face like always. Syra Yusef and Shehroz Sabzwari share amazing chemistry and I am hoping we will be getting to see more of them in the future too. But I must also say that no one can beat Sanya and Kabaacha. Sanya’s emergency fiancé backfired and Kabacha was relieved to know that he still had a chance. Will Sanya have a change of heart? Although I cannot imagine these two being married but I really want to see Kabaacha happy. His love for Sanya is so pure and innocent.

I must say that this was my most favorite episode of TNS, it was wonderfully written, very well directed and brilliantly acted out by everyone. Kudos to the entire team of TNS for a job well done. I am really looking forward to a happy ending.

Zindagi Gulzar Hai Episode 7 – Good Luck Zaroon!

Overconfidence in one’s abilities or in one’s self in general can land people in situations they could never have imagined and quite often if the person is open minded enough or is over confident for long enough it can also lead to self discovery and also enables you to look at people more objectively in the long run. Zaroon’s overconfidence is what made him take up Kashaf as a challenge and he has no idea what he is getting himself into. There is a reason why it is believed that overconfidence can have great motivating value, just look at the enthusiasm with which Zaroon is trying to woo Kashaf. Zaroon thinks that it will take Kashaf only one week to fall for his charm but any objective viewer can tell that Kashaf is going to be a tough nut to crack.

ZGH1After Maria tells Zaroon that Kashaf has a very low opinion of him and she couldn’t care less about him or his friends Zaroon considers it his ‘duty’ to prove her wrong, even if that meant apologizing to Kashaf and bearing some more insults from her with a smile on his face. At this point I think that Zaroon is making a total fool out of himself and I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying it! His opinion about Kashaf is so wrong but how would he know that since Zaroon can never be wrong about any girl….that is why they say that overconfidence is bad thing because it indulges people in wishful thinking and Zaroon is the king of wishful thinking! It was rather strange the way Maria tells Zaroon what Kashaf thinks about him right on his face since she is very fond of him but I guess she holds her ‘friend’ dearer. Zaroon’s apology lifts a big burden off of Kashaf’s shoulder but she can’t help but wonder what exactly is the reason behind Zaroon’s sudden change of behaviour. I must say though that the burden being relieved factor would have been more relatable if we had seen a few more encounters between the two.

ZGH2It was actually inspiring to see Kashaf’s sisters tutoring children in order to earn the much needed money. A family like Kashaf’s can find their way out of anything since they do not believe in relying on anyone else but exploit their own abilities to the maximum. And the great thing is that we never see these girls complaining, they consider it their duty to help their mother out and do not expect anything to be served to them on a silver platter. I am certain that there are many families out there who work hard day and night to make ends meet with their heads help up high, in fact there are many such women around me who walk miles to tutor children and toil hard to stand on their own. Kahsaf’s desire to change the way things are not just for her mother but her sisters as well is what motivates her to do her best in her studies and that is probably why she is rewarded too.

ZGHToday for the first time Sara started the conversation with Zaroon and we all got to find out more about her relationship with her fiancé and also about how she expects her relationship with him to be. I agree with Zaroon that both the partners should work in order to make a relationship last but Sara believes that she does not need to compromise. Zaroon’s opinion about women in general comes from what he has observed in his household and that may also be the reason why he likes women running after him, call it a reaction!

Although Murtaza would gladly leave Rafia alone but his second wife just won’t let him be. The most startling part was when Murtaza blames Rafia for his brother not giving him his due share from the money he got from selling the house, the man is completely blinded and no matter how hard Rafia and his daughters try to stay out of his way, he will always find some excuse to blame them for everything that goes wrong with his life. Rafia is an easy punching bag for him and he makes the most of it! He dare not blame his second wife for anything because she won’t allow it. Rafia maybe economically independent but she also wants the society’s “consent” and it is a fact that leaving Murtaza, no matter how useless he maybe, will only cause more problems for her. Besides, for women like Rafia it is not that easy to leave their husbands. I think the portrayal of Murtaza and Rafia is perfect. No doubt Murtaza is just ‘naam ki chaoun” but like Rafia says “darwaza band kurne ke lie thori si himat ki zarurat hoti hai”.

I have to say that I am glad that I have not read the novel since that saves me from continuously comparing the play with the novel. I think Zindagi Gulzar Hai till now has proven to be quite engaging; in fact I think it is one of the best plays on air right now minus the never ending and unnecessary scenes of Muratza’s second wife in particular. I am definitely looking forward to more of Zindagi Gulzar Hai and enjoying it thoroughly. Kashaf and Zaroon both are very interesting characters and the story is unfolding nicely.

Mirat-ul-Uroos Episode 1 & 2 – Review

0

We all know that Mirat-ul-Uroos is essentially the story of two sisters who are poles apart, it is the story of Akbari and Asghari’s grandchildren, but after watching these two episodes it seems like Mirat-ul-Uroos is also a story of three sons in particular who are the apple of their mothers’ eyes and even though they may not be little children anymore but to them their mothers come before everything else and the mothers still look out for them as if they were still kids. It is also the story of how their wives deal with this scenario. Asghari (Samina Ahmed) lives with her son Wajahat, until now we have seen Wajahat’s wife Rafia to be very compromising and has very good ties with Asghari. Like her Mother-in-Law her eldest son Hammad is her pride and joy. Hammad (Mikaal Zulfiqar) does not believe in moving a finger without his mother’s approval and I am waiting to see how he deals with things once Ayza (Amina Sheikh) comes into his life because her presence is definitely bound to change things. Ayza has been brought up by her grandmother Akbari (Ayesha Khan) and although her father and grandmother both think she is perfect in every way, I guess all of us could tell that she is nowhere near that. Ayza is spoiled and very opinionated and finds it difficult to stay in her mother’s house for too long since there are way too many rules for her liking. Nasir’s wife has tons of drama coming her way since Ayza and Akbari are there to stay. Ayza has daadi wrapped around her little finger and she likes to have things her way. She plays the “my parents don’t love me enough’ card to perfection.

Ayza’s sister Aima (Mehwish Hayat) is not like her in any way, she is sweet and subdued, so Ayza and Aima would be another one of those sisters who are completely opposite to each other. Aima and Hashim ( Ahsan Khan, who may just be the male version of Ayza!) like each other and all Hashim needs is a job in order to go ahead with the proposal.

To be honest, after watching the first episode I was not sure if Mirat-ul-Uroos would be the kind of play that will be engaging enough to keep me looking forward to more because some of the conversations seemed too long but few of  the characters immediately caught my attention. Ayza’s character in particular seemed very interesting right from the get go and held my interest for most part of the first episode. Not to mention that the havoc she is going to play with Hammad’s life would be something to look forward to in particular. Akbari is an equally interesting character, her double standards and know-it-all attitude makes you laugh, Ayesha Khan is one of those actresses who have been around for such a long time and it is a treat watching them on-screen every time. While Asghari is very eager to get Ayza married to Hammad (she obviously does not know her well enough!), Akbari won’t hear of it.

Since Umera Ahmed has written this play, I am looking forward to some mind blowing dialogues that will give us something to reflect upon. I have to say that I was not much impressed with Momal Sheikh’s acting in Aiteraaf but I like her as Hamnah and until now she has done a good job.

In my opinion the best thing about this play is that it is going to be a family drama and there will be something for everyone, the women married in joint families in particular can relate to it. Every exemplary big brother, an elder sister whose flaws everyone around her fails to see, a middle child who has to work very hard to be heard and most importantly the relations the two daadis’ have with the entire family. The downside is that the story is nothing out of the ordinary. We have all seen so many plays about two sisters who are complete opposites and ones about sass-bahu fights too that the script will have to be extraordinary in order to stand out. The second episode was much more engaging than the first one so I am hoping it will only get better. For now, I am still waiting to be thoroughly entertained in a way that the play keeps me glued to my seat.

Daagh – An Overview

0

Daagh is another hit given by Sarmat Khoosat! The cast has notable stars like Fahad Mustafa, Sana Askari, Shama Askari, Yusra Rizvi, Firdous Jamal and the female lead Mehar Bano, who is a newcomer. Every actor in this show has played their character to perfection. Each character has its own story and we can see the characters evolve overtime. The flow and pace of the show is pretty smooth which makes the show more intriguing. The light touch of the melodious title song also adds life to the emotionally heavy scenes and makes it more interesting to the viewers.

This drama reflects a social issue still very common in our society nowadays. It is disheartening to see that people still have such orthodox views about having daughters and not sons. It is a modern world and such views should be eradicated from society as daughters are no less than sons in the era.

The promos of this show did not look promising as it seemed like the ‘same old story’ about how shameful it is considered in our society to have no sons and only daughters. For some people in our society, daughters are considered a huge responsibility and are condemned. The whole blame of producing daughter also goes to the mother’s shoulders. It is saddening to see that such people still exist in our society who put all the blame on the woman.

This drama revolves around Murad played by Fahad Mustafa and Emama played by Mehar Bano who met in university and fell in love. Emama’s father is shown as a stern man who has no love for his three daughters as he considers them a huge burden. He is completely against the marriage as he wanted to get Emama married to his sister’s son, Mushtaq and thinks that Emama has marred his reputation by marrying Murad whom she ‘supposedly’ had a fling in the university. He breaks all ties with her after her marriage. Murad’s mother is not happy at first with Murad’s marriage as she also wanted him to marry her sister’s daughter Deeba (played by Sana Askari) who has always been in love with Murad, but accepts Emama for her son’s happiness.
Emama has only one fear in her life and that is of having daughters as she has seen her father’s attitude towards her mother and incessant taunts all her life, for not being able to produce a son. Murad was a huge support to Emama at first and assured her that he would never change his attitude towards her for having daughters. But after 9 years and four daughters, we saw a different Murad altogether. Suddenly, all he worries about is the huge responsibility of his daughters. He does not blame Emama or demean her in anyway but his attitude towards his daughters is far from affectionate. Emama’s mother in laws’ attitude is very cold towards her and her daughters and her verbal taunts and constant reminders of her worthlessness have no end. The only member of the family who is polite to Emama and her daughters is Rehana, Murad’s elder sister. She had helped Emama and given her courage at every step. The only problem in her life is the lack of children. And that is why when she asked Murad and Emama to give their newborn daughter Soha to her, they agreed. Emama gave her daughter to Rehana with a heavy heart in the hope that this act will make a place for her in her mother in law’s heart. But even after her sacrifice, her mother in law is still adamant on getting Murad married to his cousin Deeba to fulfill her wish of having a grandson. Murad, who has always disliked Deeba refuses but finally gives into the pressure and emotional blackmail done by his mother. His wish for a son makes him give in to his mother’s demand for the second marriage.

You cannot help but pity Emama’s character. First, she saw her father craving for a son and now Murad. She is shown as a timid and introvert woman who bears it all without a word. This quality manages to annoy the viewers at some point. Murad is shown as a supportive husband but turns selfish in a weak moment. Rehana is another positive character in this show while Murad’s mother and his younger sister Noureen are selfish and had made every attempt to make Emama’s life miserable.

To sum it up, this show is a good combination of cast, story, director and screenplay. Although, the story is not new but this show still manages to grab the viewers’ attention. The newcomer Mehar Bano has also done a good for a newcomer and Fahad Mustafa is phenomenal as usual! Sana Askari is seen at her best as Deeba who is in love with her cousin to the point of obsession. This show is definitely worth watching!

Aik Nayee Cinderella Episode 11 – Misunderstandings and Heartbreak

Maya Ali and Faizan Khwaja were the stars of this episode. They both have done a wonderful job. Their expressions and timing was brilliant. Hats off! I always found Meesha and her antics hilarious, even when she was bossed and ordered around by the evil stepmother and step sisters, but for the first time I felt sad at her predicament. A misunderstanding has emerged between Meesha and Roman and Meesha feels exploited. She thinks Roman has played with her feelings because of the twisted way the truth came out in front of her.
Meesha was ready to give up her dreams for Roman when the shattering truth came in front of her. Roman lied to Suraiya and this was overheard by Meesha who believed it to be the truth. Meesha completely loses her self esteem and resorts to the only way left to gain it back; by marrying Mayer. She had no intention to say yes to him as she had finally realized how much she loved Roman. But just to give him the taste of his own medicine she says yes to Mayer and tells Roman that she knew his truth all along and she was the one to play with his feelings. Meesha said some really harsh words to him which broke his heart completely.
‘Tumne socha bhi kaise ke Mayer jaise larke ke samne koi larki tumhe ghaas dalegi’
These words spoken by Meesha broke his heart into pieces and he couldn’t suppress his tears. My heart went out to him in this scene. Faizan Khwaja was superb! Actors are usually horrible at crying but Faizan did a great job. Roman’s tears actually made me sad.
I am surprised that Mayer could not judge that Meesha is not happy by the way she accepted his proposal. She was so unhappy and it was clearly written on her face. Sometimes getting what you have always dreamed off is not enough, because there may be other things that would make you even more happier.
Dado is completely against Meesha’s decision of marrying Mayer as she knows about her feelings for Roman, and thinks that she is blindly running after her dreams. But the truth is very different; she is only marrying him because of her self respect that she thinks Roman has crushed.
Roman has completely given up now and is going back. He just wants Meesha to be happy with Mayer. His happiness lies in hers. I have said it before and I would say it again, I love Roman’s character because of his selflessness. He likes to help people and make them happy and never asks for anything in return. I hope Meesha gets to know the truth soon and everything is cleared between them.
I am getting more and more curious by the day. What is Meesha’s past? Who is Shah Baba and Farjad and how are they related to Meesha? And the funny part is poor Farjad thinks Aimee is Meesha and that is why he is adamant on marrying her. What will happen once Farjad gets to know Aimee is not the girl he is looking for?
I was disappointed to see that Meher discriminates between her own daughters. She degrades Aimee, and Zaini always gets the limelight. Meher went so far as to slap Aimee, when she tried to protest against the discrimination. I felt really bad for Aimee. Warda Butt has done a superb job!
Now coming to Mayer and Bano; Mayer’s decision to marry Meesha has created a rift between mother and son. Bano is completely against the marriage as Meher has filed her ears with doubts about Meesha’s past. I hope this delays the marriage and the misunderstanding is cleared between Meesha and Roman and everything falls into place. It seems like interesting things are coming up in this show and trust me, you wouldn’t want to miss a single episode!

Coke Kahani Episode 9 – Bondings

0

Another mind blowing episode! Coke Kahani fulfils all the requirement of a ‘must watch’ show. It has humor, a good story, brilliant actors and an amazing director who has introduced a new kind of show to the audience.
Asfand and Maya are slowly opening up to each other and we saw a lot of development in their relationship in this episode. Asfand told Maya to accept the fact that she still loves him like before and it is obvious that she still does. The misunderstanding is finally getting cleared and they are getting more and more comfortable with each other and the rift between them is finally fading away. But the question is will Maya stay back with Asfand now that all misunderstandings are clear or would she go back to Florida?
The most hilarious part of the show was when Saad was ‘describing’ Ruqaiya to Murtaza. It made me laugh till I had tears in my eyes. It was a treat to watch! Saad’s guilty expressions when he was being scolded by Ruqaiya, Rayaan and Zoya were extremely cute. Saad and Ruqaiya both look great together and I look forward to their scenes. Saad is just too thickheaded to realize how much Ruqaiya likes him. I agree with Rayaan when he told Ruqaiya: ‘Iske ilawa sab ko pata hai tum isse kiya kehna chahti ho’. So true!
Saad is finally noticing Ruqaiya but it is still very hard to tell at this stage whether Saad likes Ruqaiya back or not. I hope he does! They make a nice couple.
We got to see a very stubborn side of Maya, she refused to go to the restaurant opening because nobody invited her. She got so upset when she thought she was not invited to the restaurant opening but what she did not know was that a surprise was in store for her. Another heart-warming scene! Nazia also clears the air about her and Asfand’s relationship which was very important for Maya to know to clear the doubts in her mind about Asfand.
I really do not want Jugnoo to leave the restaurant. I hope he stays back! Maria’s advice to Beydil to try to take Jugnoo’s place as the Chef was laughable. Beydil is not at all experienced and I doubt he knows anything other than his famous ‘shayari’.
Mutmain Sahab is one of my favorite characters in this show. He is currently feeling useless because Nusrat has joined university. He misses her company and the petty fights which kept them both busy. I loved the father son bonding when Rayaan tried to console his father. Till now, Mutmain Sahab was only seen scolding Rayaan about one thing or the other but now we saw an endearing bond between them. I hope we get to see more scenes like these.
Rayaan should listen to Zoya’s advice and start thinking seriously about life and his career. I hope Zoya is able to put some sense into Rayaan! And I hope they end up liking each other too. They look nice together.
Overall, it was a good episode. I am looking forward to the next episode as we would see the introduction of Nusrat’s young university friend and Mutmain Sahab’s reaction, so stay tuned!
