Those who don’t sing for money – Sufi artists

0

Of all the forms of devotional music, Sufi music, despite being age-old, has the ability to appeal to modern sensibilities. It encapsulates a facet of Eastern spirituality that can entrance anyone with its message of love. Celebrating this unparalleled, mystical magic of Sufi kalam, Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop (RPTW) organised its 12th Annual Mystic Music Festival from January 10 till January 12.

The festival is a commendable medium to project the Sufi path that gets one in touch with the soul. The three-day event is perhaps one of the most widely attended events organised by RPTW. The platform makes Sufi music accessible for the genre’s enthusiasts.
But other than the gripping kalam, what attracts a following for Sufi music are the artistes themselves, whose history and traditions are worth knowing. In a backstage conversation with some of the musicians performing at the festival, We explore the various aspects of their lives as Sufi singers.

The family of musicians, called Shah Jo Raag, who sing at the shrine of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai have maintained their 400 year long tradition and kept close to their roots. There is nothing commercial about their craft and there is potent spirituality in their music.

Muhammed Ismail Mirjat, who is a direct descendent of Shah Jamal, says that every Thursday, the singers gather after the Isha prayer and sing for the rest of the night and on the event of an Urs, they sing consecutively for three days.
“This has been going on since three hundred years. We have never missed a day at the shrine and we perform without any money/salary to sustain ourselves; it is pure devotion and no night has been empty,” says Mirjat.

Saeein Ghulam Abbas of the Madhu Lal Group adds that although the musicians hail from different backgrounds, they all wish to enter the dervish mode while performing, through the song, the sound of the dhol or dance. Having travelled around the globe, he says that it is praiseworthy that the festival pays homage to the complete devotion and purity of the centuries-old Sufi poetry and songs.

“I think if a hundred people came to any of our shows, they will develop faith in the Sufi way because it’s the way of peace and calm,” says Abbas. “There is a fear that we may become extinct, but let me say that whenever the Sufi message is discussed, people do gather.”

The festival brought together some of the most renowned Sufi artistes this week, including Sanam Marvi, Saeein Zahoor, Pappu Saeein, Akhtar Chinar and Arieb Azhar. Each day had its own charm, and with its greatly designed set-up and impeccable sound system, the event had a high entertainment quotient.

On its last day, the show started with an act by Mehboob Mian Miri qawwal and was reminiscent of the days when the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan could captivate any crowd with his live performances. On the recommendation of Saidaan Peerzada of RPTW, the qawwal tried a first-off fusion performance with Rafaqat Ali Khan, for which he harmonised his traditional qawwali with Khan’s contemporary classical music.

Krishnan Lal Bheel from Cholistan, who performed primarily in his local Marvai language, sees the festival as an institution that has, in modern times, given a platform to Sufi artistes both locally and internationally.

While Sufi and folk music continues to embark upon its aim of touching the soul of the masses, Bheel says that the government must do more to preserve the art. “If the government would give us some support, it would help make [Sufi and folk] music thrive again. Many of our elders are leaving slowly because they cannot sustain themselves and don’t receive much emphasis or protocol,” says Bheel.

It is fitting to see Sufi artistes, who rarely get the opportunity to display their art in the mainstream, being offered a prestigious channel to do so in the form of the RPTW Mystic Music Festival.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 20 21 Review – The End!

0

Ohkay so, last night Thora Sa Aasman came to an end & honestly speaking, even though the ending came a bit suddenly, it left me feeling that they wrapped everything up properly & showed everything in detail. I think the channel made the best decision of airing two episodes a week because watching both the last episodes back to back made things seem quite seamless. However, my complaint about the way Fatima’s character was tackled still remains, even though she was the backbone & the main character for a considerable part of a novel, the director fizzled her out & gave every character an equal level, which I think wasn’t a right decision because in a story where every single person was selfish & suffering because of going out of the way to fulfill their greed, the character of Fatima embodied purity, selflessness & a sense of enrichment that one gets by empowering others & that I believe was sadly & heavily compromised upon which otherwise would’ve been the best aspect of the drama like it was of the novel.

This drama basically was a representation of the proverb, ‘what goes around, comes around’. It emphasized on the fact that everything you do, good or bad, small or big, for yourself or for someone else, it will return to you in a way & at a time you’d least expect it to. This story showed how a man, who thought he had everything in control, ended up losing everything that he cherished & it was only because of his greed to get what he wanted. This story also showed how a man who chose to trust a selfish man ended up losing everything because of his blind trust in someone who wasn’t trust worthy in the first place. This story was a depiction of how every single person is in a search for better & better & when they are at it, at times, in fact most of the times, they forget to cross check the path that they have chosen to reach their goal, they forget to do the self-policing whether they are doing things rightfully or wrongfully. This story was a depiction of how greed blinds people & compels them to go to such lengths that they themselves can not imagine.

It all started because of Haroon Kamal, just because he saw Ambar & realized that he won’t be able to have her, he wrecked her entire life to get a step closer to her but just when he did, he ended up violating all the other boundaries that were around him. Haroon Kamal actually believed or if not, he chose to believe that he was a free-bird, free from all limitations, free of social pressures, free of falling into any trap & free of any such emotions that may weaken him, but in the course of reassuring himself, he forgot that he after all had an Achilles Heel too & it was Nayab. Haroon Kamal thought that he will always remain scot-free & will never fall into a trap of his own wrongdoings but he was wrong, the time actually proved that he was wrong!

Ambar fell into Haroon’s trap & even decided to get married to him, but seeing Nayab with him put things into perspective & she realized that just like Rakshi snatched her father away from her, Ambar was going to do the same to Nayab by snatching the most precious person from her too, which was her father. Seeing Nayab with Haroon served as a reminder & a reality check to Ambar because she shared the same relation with Mansoor as well & Ambar could actually relate to how heartbroken Nayab will get if she will find out that her father married a girl half his age. Sadly, Ambar went to meet Haroon to never come back & she ended up dying accidentally. Ambar lost a purpose of life after losing her father & her fiance that is why she even lost the urge to live but that didn’t give Haroon end her life like that.

I am glad they changed the scenario between Nayab & Samar in the drama because in the novel, their track was quite grim where they both go for a Nikkah after Nayab learns the fact that her father will never allow her to get married to Samar & later when she finds out that Samar was her brother, she commits suicide. I was actually a bit scared & still interested to see how they will interpret Samar & Nayab’s relation in the drama but I am glad they changed it. So, Zarka chose to be a bigger person & she chose to be the one who kept an eye on her children but from a distance because unlike Shahista she was appreciative of what Fatima did for Samar & Sani. Zarka knew that even though she gave birth to Samar & Sani, she still wasn’t entitled to be labeled as their mother because it was Fatima who spent sleepless nights to raise them, it was Fatima who fulfilled the duty of being Samar & Sani’s mother without being one. Even though for a random person, Zarka must’ve been at a morally low level for what she used to do but by giving up her urge to be with her children & respecting Fatima for the way she raised Samar & Sani, Zarka proved she was still better than those sophisticated, educated & liberal people who posed to be at the upper level of morals using their wealth as a veil to conceal their dirty dark secrets. If Zarka had wanted, she also could have claimed her right on Samar & Sani like Shahista did, but Zarka proved, that she wasn’t selfish like Shahista, who turned a blind eye from a new born Shaheer, only to ruin his life & disturb him mentally years & years later, that too in such circumstances where Shaheer’s father Haroon wasn’t ready to accept him nor were his siblings Asad & Nayab!

Mansoor lost everything because Rakshi got everything she wanted, that is why she let him know that she didn’t need him anymore. It was again a result of how giving an edge to a frenemy makes you lose everything that once made your life complete & it makes you lose everything that you cherished & valued the most in your life. Mansoor fell prey to Haroon’s brain feeding but then again, the fact still remains that he wasn’t a child himself who easily let Haroon sway his feelings in Rakshi’s favor. Mansoor not only lost his wife, his house, his business, he ended up losing his beloved first born Ambar, who meant everything to him.

Overall, this journey, as grim as it was, came with a lot of lessons. Even though the drama-makers did a fairly decent job in dramatizing the novel, I still feel that the novel was a class apart & sadly, where drama did do justice to it, it also didn’t do justice to it completely, may be it was because of the production value or may be because of not allowing the viewers to warm up to the characters, something definitely was missing but I will surely say that it was a great watch & I didn’t feel like I wasted my time. The bonus definitely would be a fewer number of episodes & to the point approach but again, I still feel the drama-makers deprived the viewers of experiencing Fatima’s journey, her struggles, her pains & her sufferings because later when she got the fruit of her effort in the form of having Shaheer return to her, it just looked like any other scene with no emotional factor to it whereas it should’ve been a turning point, a thought-provoking, an emotionally overwhelming scene showcasing how Fatima received the reward for her years & years & years of sacrifices.

I will commend the director for directing this drama aptly. The actors did a great job too as it was a combined effort of all of the newcomers & the experienced actors, that they made this drama worth a watch. Sehar Afzal in particular deserves a special mention for being phenomenal as Ambar. Zeba Bakhtiyar tried to do well but she remained expressionless throughout. Ali Khan was quite convincing as Haroon Kamal & so was Babar Ali as Mansoor. Ushna Shah actually needs to take some lessons because irrespective of the role she plays, positive or negative, she always has this breathless asthmatic expression on her face. Yasra Rizvi, she could’ve done so much to own this character, to make people forget the performance of Aliya Imam as Fatima, but she didn’t. I also found it hard to believe that even after 20 years or so, Fatima’s character didn’t age in fact none of the characters like Haroon, Shahista or Fatima seemed to age one bit. Anyways, apart from these few drawbacks, the drama on the whole was interesting to watch & I will most certainly recommend it to those who’re still on the fence about it. Please share your thoughts about the journey of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 18 19 Review – Interesting Turn of Events!

0

Ohkay so, things have now become quite interesting in Thora Sa Aasman. I must say I am really glad that the channel decided to air this drama twice a week because it covers more content & even the pace seems faster, also another added bonus is that the drama will end quickly in comparison to one episode per week.

Even though everyone around Ambar felt that she was unreasonable, there was something still were admirable about her where she trusted people & walked an extra mile for those she loved but now, the same personality trait has become her biggest problem because she is choosing to trust one wrong person after another. She believed in Rakhsi & Rakshi snatched everything away from her & now she is trusting Haroon Kamal, without even knowing how manipulative, conniving & negative he is, or may be she can see that but chooses to not to. Yes, Haroon Kamal stayed persistent & he tried to win Ambar over, but Ambar should have gone with the very first impression she had of him in stead of curbing everything aside & actually developing feelings for him. The news of Talha’s engagement hit the nail in the coffin & the last glimmer of hope in Ambar’s heart died, that is the moment she decided that she could open a window for Haroon Kamal to step into her life & she went ahead with that to make it happen!

I actually really liked seeing Safiya emerging as such a strong individual who was not only taking care of herself but was doing everything to keep her family afloat too. On Fatima’s request, Shaheer helped Safiya in finding a job & that’s where I felt a connection between the two. Safiya definitely is the sort of a girl Shaheer would like & that is why the same Shaheer who always seemed shy was now comfortably conversing with Safiya. I think both Shaheer & Safiya will complement each other in terms of mental wavelength & personality because Safiya is very wise & mature & so is Shaheer.

On Safiya’s request, Muneeza & Ambar moved to the rental apartment with her but they both seemed uncomfortable with the idea of living in such a place. Actually, I was happy to see that Muneeza started trusting Safiya’s judgement a little more & understood how drawing a line with Haroon Kamal was necessary but sadly when it came to Ambar, she chose to go with what Haroon Kamal said as she is so used to the idea of a comfortable & luxurious life, that now she would go to any length to achieve it as she knows that Haroon Kamal can provide that for her at this stage of her life. Ambar is forced to face the reality that for Haroon she wasn’t a priority of his life, that is why after a lot of thinking, she decides to propose marriage to him because she wants some sort of security after what she has been through & sadly, this proved that Ambar chose to become another Rakshi! Even though what Ambar is doing is wrong, but what she said to Muneeza was partially true. Muneeza took everything she had for granted & didn’t pay attention to the fact that one day everything could drift away from her, till this point, Ambar was right but the way she blamed Muneeza & implied that it was because of Muneeza that Mansoor got interested in Rakshi, she was wrong. Everyone thinks that someone else is responsible for what they are going through but, no one has an idea that it is only Haroon Kamal who transpired everything & Mansoor’s entire family turned into his puppet. It was sad to see that even after taking everything away from Ambar, he was now trying to cause a rift between Ambar & Safiya only because he saw that Safiya couldn’t stand him!!!

Rakshi has started showing her true colors, from spending extravagantly to getting involved with someone, she has done it all in such a short span of time & Mansoor seems to regret his decision but like they say, it’s already too late to do the damage control. Mansoor has slowly & steadily handed over everything to Rakshi & now it seems it won’t be too long when Rakshi will throw him out of that house too!

Nayab & Samar have developed feelings for each other but they have no idea what life has in store for them. I am sure things will be revealed when Zarka will make an entry in their lives once again. Shaheer seemed a little too disturbed by the way Shahista Kamal was interfering in his life but he actually lost it when she told him that he is her son. Sadly, Fatima’s nightmares are materializing & she knows that the day isn’t too far when she will have to answer all the questions. The last scene suggested that Fatima’s brother & sister in law showed up at her doorstep, I am sure they must’ve come to mooch off some money from her because they never really cared for her but for themselves, or may be, either Shahista or Zarka must’ve sent them to convince Fatima to send their kids back, by paying them a huge amount, you never know!

Overall, these two episodes were quite gripping in comparison to some of the previous episodes. Finally, things are unfolding & I can’t wait to see what else is left in store for us. Please share your thoughts about these episodes of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 15 16 17 Review – Enemy Acting Like a Savior!

0

Ohkay so, I must say, the story of Thora Sa Aasman has become quite interesting at this stage & I really like how the director is taking things forward. This drama is completely different to what the viewers are being offered to watch lately & that’s what makes it even better because it is based on the harsh realities of life & the adversities people go through. What I love the most about this drama is that it is showing us how people in facing the adversity react & how conninvingly, those who create these adversities for people pose to be their saviors!

Ambar & Muneeza are facing the harsh realities of life. After parting from Mansoor, both Ambar & Muneeza have come out of their bubble & have realized that the world out there & the people in it are far more ruthless than they could have ever imagined. Mansoor actually treated them as his universe & sadly, him not being a part of their lives anymore has created so many problems for both of them. Muneeza actually thought that her brother & his wife will support her & her daughters financially but things were completely different to what she imagined.

Mansoor has not realized that he is committing one mistake after another. First mistake was getting married to Rakshi, second mistake was divorcing Muneeza, third mistake was parting ways from his brother Maqsood, fourth mistake was taking a complete ownership of the business, fifth mistake was calling the engagement of his daughters off & the final mistake that he is committing is handing over the chunk of his wealth to Rakshi. Mansoor is someone who gets easily manipulated & he is not realizing how Rakshi & Haroon Kamal are making the most of it. Mansoor is actually just a pawn but the masterminds are Haroon & Rakshi. In fact Rakshi is also doing what Haroon tells her to do but it is Haroon who is the actual puppeteer here.

It is actually quite mind boggling how far a man like Haroon Kamal can go to get what he likes. He has literally ruined everything in Ambar’s life to get closer to her & sadly his plan is working. Just because Haroon knew that he had no chance of winning Ambar over, he literally turned her world upside down & is now posing to be their well-wisher as he knows they are emotionally unstable, so they need someone to rely on & Haroon is making the most of the situation. It is actually quite sad that Ambar is incapable of reading people’s minds. Ambar committed a mistake by trusting Rakshi & now she is once again committing a mistake by trusting Haroon Kamal.

I must say I actually loved seeing Safia coming to the forefront & trying to tie the loose ends together. Safia chose to stay with her father initially as she knew that way she would be able to help her mother & her sister. Safia is far more analytical & practical than the rest of her family members, which is commendable. Roshaan is on a trip of his own where he is blaming Ambar for everything without even realizing that there is no reason to crib about something that has happened as he can’t undo that but then it is understandable because he is young & immature. It is actually quite shocking that even Muneeza is depending on Haroon Kamal, obviously because even she in her wildest dreams never imagined that she’ll live to see a day like this. Ambar is not that smart but Safia on the other hand is not only intelligent, but she is far more brave than anyone around her realized. Safia chose to end her engagement with Osama on her own terms because she knew that her relationship with him will demand a lot of sacrifices so she knew that at this point in her life, her family was her priority & she needed to keep her mind free from any other issues. I actually liked that Osama was ready to take a stand for Safia & he almost convinced his parents for his & Safia’s marriage but then even he started demanding a bit too much from what Safia could offer at this stage in her life, therefore it resulted in the end of their engagement too. I love how Safia can even see through Haroon Kamal’s intentions, it’s like she knows that a man can Haroon Kamal can never ever offer any favor to anyone without expecting anything in return. Muneeza & Ambar chose not to pay heed to what Safia was saying but the time will tell!

Where Nayab has started showing a lot of interest in Samar, Shahista Kamal has also started taking a lot of interest in Shaheer’s life after finding out that he is her son, the one they estranged the day he was born. Does Shahista actually think that by giving a few monetary favors to Shaheer & by hovering around him posing to be his well-wisher would justify her & her husband’s selfishness that they displayed years ago when he was born? Shahista should realize that by doing all these things, she is only making things difficult for Shaheer & also for herself because the day Shaheer will find out that she happens to be his mother, it also would be the day when Shaheer will ask her all those questions that she might not have an answer for. There is absolutely nothing at this stage that Shahista can do, which will justify her past mistake. It was actually quite shocking to see how Haroon reacted at the mention of Shaheer, it is unbelievable that being a father, Haroon Kamal is not concerned about him at all!

It was interesting how Shahista told Haroon that their son Asad wanted to get married to Ambar. Shahista herself is aware of Haroon’s nature & his evil intentions as he has been insincere to her in the past, that is why the moment Asad told her that he spotted his father with Ambar, Shahista knew that he was upto something & he wasn’t going out of the way for no reason.

Zarka came into the picture too & seems like even she has started making enough money once again to help Fatima raise Samar & Sani. It seems that even Zarka has kept a close eye on Fatima & her family because she knows that her sister Rabeea handed her children to Fatima. Things are actually slipping away from Fatima’s hands because sadly, one day she will have to give answers to all these questions that her children will ask about their existence & their biological parents.

Finally, Haroon Kamal said it. He confessed his feelings to Ambar but what’s left to see is that will Ambar become another Rakshi or she will be respectful enough to part ways with him by recognizing his evil intentions? Ambar should understand that she is the reason why her entire family is suffering so badly & is going through all the hardships so she should not act selfishly by ignoring Safia’s suggestions & opinions because even without interacting with Haroon Kamal, Safia knew that he was definitely upto something & his confession proved it. I hope it serves as an eye opener to Ambar & she also realizes that Safia called her engagement off with Osama for her & Muneeza’s sake. It seems like Mansoor has married another Muneeza, the woman he was running away from. Rakshi knows that she has Mansoor wrapped around her finger that is why she is putting forth one demand after another & looks like Mansoor is at the verge of losing everything, his wealth & his mind too!

Overall, these three episodes were done really really well. I am glad that the channel decided to air Thora Sa Aasman twice a week because it changes the pace of the drama & gives us a lot more to watch & discuss. I must say, so far all the actors have done a good job but the one who is shining the most is the actor playing the role of Shaheer, that actor has without a doubt has owned the character of Shaheer & portrayed it perfectly. I am not sure why we didn’t get to see this promising young actor in more dramas because he surely is a very fine actor. The direction of the drama is great, I love the usage of the OST at the right time & the right moment. I really like how the writer has shown us different reactions of different people when adversity hits them. I wish they had hired someone else as Safia because she has an important role to play & not only her character, but the acting needed to make a mark too but sadly, where the character is so strong, the acting is not. The rest is all good. Please share your thoughts about these 3 episodes of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 13 14 Review – Interesting Developments!

0

Ohkay so, these episodes of Thora Sa Aasman were quite engaging & interesting. The consistent pace has always remained the strength of this drama. The director surely has given it a perfect treatment & there are no loopholes in the direction that were necessary for such a serious themed drama.

So, finally Rakshi showed her true colors & now when she saw how secure Mansoor made her in this relationship, she started exploiting his trust on her too. Rakshi ended up telling Ambar that Mansoor married her, while she had no reason to because she was at this stage where Mansoor could never throw her out of his life despite the suggestions of his wife or daughter. Rakshi very conveniently twisted the truth in front of Mansoor, which showed that she is in this relationship only for herself and not for any other reason, not even Mansoor.

The moment Muneeza and the entire family finds out about Rakhsi & Mansoor’s marriage, the hell breaks loose & everyone starts questioning Mansoor followed by blaming Ambar for bringing Rakshi into their lives, only to destroy everything. Muneeza thinks just by bribing Rakshi, she will be able to save her marriage only to find out that Rakshi had some other intentions too. Rakshi never wanted to share her husband, infact she never wanted to share his wealth, that is why she tells Mansoor to divorce Muneeza. Mansoor actually proved that he was a simple minded person who could easily get manipulated that is why he ended up doing what Haroon Kamal & Rakshi told him to do. If Mansoor had known that Haroon Kamal was the wrong support system he was depending upon, he would’ve never ever allowed a conniving man like Haroon Kamal to make a fool out of him. Mansoor ended up divorcing Muneeza while also estranging his beloved child Ambar. Safiya & Roshaan stay with Mansoor only to see what Mansoor would do, but they are left shattered when they see Rakshi in their home.

Looks like Zarka is going to make an appearance again. She might pursue her singing career & I am sure she will very soon come across Haroon Kamal. Shahista’s search for her son continues & they get a step closer by finding out that the couple who adopted him ended up giving him to a woman named Fatima. The scene where Shaheer, Saani & Samar run into Haroon Kamal was done really well. That was the moment where Samar felt some sort of attraction towards Haroon & for obvious reasons. It seems Nayab has developed some feelings for Samar due to which she gets irritated the moment Haroon tells her to judge him according to to his social standing.

Samar, Saani & Shaheer have no idea what Fatima is hiding from them & what their life has in store for them too. Fatima has done well as a mother & she has shaped the characters of her children really well. It would be hard to see them falling apart because of Haroon Kamal’s shadow in their lives. Haroon has wrecked Mansoor’s life & I am sure, the tables will turn & Karma will play its part on him too. Haroon thinks he has a strong hold on his life & his destiny & everything that he has done won’t bite him but he will be proven wrong & I can’t wait to see that happen.

Overall, these two episodes were done well. I know the way things unfolded, they had to be conveyed through a lot of screaming & yelling but there came a time probably after 2 scenes or so where I had to mute the TV because I couldn’t handle all the noise. All the actors conveyed the feelings of their characters really well & the director did a great job too. I hate to say it again but I didn’t like Yasra Rizvi as Fatima in this episode too, may be because I had a lot of expectations attached to her character that I am left feeling disappointed every single time I see her character being spoiled because of such a substandard performance. Anyways, please share your thoughts about these episodes of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 11 Review – Rakshi; The Talk of The Town!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was quite interesting to watch. I am glad that this episode brought another chapter with it & everything was covered perfectly. All the tracks are being unfolded at a very decent pace with a lot of interesting happenings in each of the characters lives. I must say, there’s a simplicity with which the director approached this script & that is why, by not complicating things, the director made it easy for us to understand the journey of all the characters.

In this entire episode, Rakshi was the one who was being discussed & hated. Rakshi has taken everyone’s life by storm. While there’s only one man who is standing by her side, the rest of the people are suffering badly because of her. Muneeza grows a little suspicious of Rakshi because she hears about her from Shabana & when she confronts Mansoor, that’s when her fears get confirmed where Mansoor clearly tells her that no matter what happens, he won’t give up on Raksi because he needs her. Talha, Osama, Masood, Shabana, Muneeza, Roshaan, Safiya, Fareeda, each one of them feel that Mansoor is getting carried away & he is being wrong in his judgment. Each & everyone can’t really put a finger on what it is because of which Mansoor is so convinced to fight for the sake of Rakshi so much that is he is literally not worried an ounce about his family.

Haroon Kamal plays the cupid & he tells Rakshi that Mansoor loves him, while Mansoor on his own was still contemplating whether to confess or not because he wasn’t sure what Rakshi’s answer will be. Haroon Kamal is doing everything to tear Ambar’s family apart because it is his way of taking a revenge for the way she misbehaved with him because other than that, there’s no justification of Haroon’s involvement in this entire scenario. Despite hearing from everyone & despite getting ignored by Rakshi, Ambar still doesn’t grow suspicious of her friend because she can not conceive of the fact that her friend can betray her. Ambar thinks just by speaking to Rakshi & telling her to quit her job, she will make things right & she will be able to restore her family’s happiness but little did she know that both Mansoor & Rakshi were into each other & at this stage, there was absolutely no one who could part them.

The very first glimpse that Mansoor gets in Rakshi’s life if when he sees Zafar creating a scene in her house. That’s when Mansoor realizes that Rakshi has lived a tough life & even after getting so much of support from him & standing up on her feet, she is vulnerable & still not so secure. That is when Mansoor feels the urge to protect Rakshi, out of sympathy for her & may be out of his love for her. Mansoor takes everything in his hand because he promises to himself that he will do everything to give Rakshi the peace of mind that she deserves & that is why he goes out of the way to settle things with Zafar once & for all. I was actually quite surprised to see Saiqa’s indifferent attitude towards Mansoor’s proposal for Rakshi, it was like she had no objection about the fact that he was married, was double her age & had kids who were the same age as Rakshi. Just because Saiqa herself has lived a miserable life, she found it as an opportunity for Rakshi to shape up her life because she bagged a proposal of a man like Mansoor who was quite wealthy. They both get married & that’s when Rakshi learns about the lengths Mansoor can go to for her because he gifts her a house that she could only dream of!

Shahista Kamal on the other hand comes across Shaheer & she goes out of the way to create more such opportunities where she can see him. Shahista feels an affection towards Shaheer & may be it is because he reminds her of the son that she had to abandon when he was just born. Fatima is living a peaceful life with her children Shaheer, Saani & Samar. Samar gets an opportunity to model for a TV commercial where he meets Haroon Kamal’s daughter Nayab & I am sure things are going to get a lot more interesting.

Even though the director has done justice to all the characters, I feel the growth of Fatima’s character & the entire journey, with how much devotion & determination she brings herself & her kids to this stage & raise them to be such good human beings, has been heavily compromised upon. When I read the novel & fast forward to this point, only by reading I could see the difference in Fatima’s attitude, her mannerisms & her nature but I am not sure why Fatima in this drama seems like an after thought. All this while when I was waiting for her character to make an appearance again, I thought we’ll get to see a very humble, refined, a very decent & mature Fatima who would’ve made a name for herself because of her wisdom & who would’ve influenced the lives of her children in a very unique way, but when I see uncombed hair, annoyed expressions & a very swift dialogue delivery of Yasra Rizvi, I feel she is just the same Fatima who was kicked out of her mother’s home & she till date has not changed one bit. I know things are always different in novel & in the drama but if this would’ve been about a supporting character, I wouldn’t have paid heed to these intricacies that but this is about Fatima, an integral part of the novel & probably the main lead where at one point the entire story will revolve around her, so I think the director should’ve paid more attention to her growth & her maturity. I feel in stead of looking like their mother, Fatima looks like a very strict & disciplined elder sister of Shaheer, Saani & Samar & that’s about it.

I know these are two different projects & I didn’t follow the PTV version of Thora Sa Aasman but I do remember catching a few glimpses of Aliya Imam’s performance & the entire get up that she did to translate Fatima’s character on screen really made those glimpses so impactful that I still remember them clearly. So unfortunately, even if I don’t want to compare, I am forced to think that Yasra Rizvi had such a phenomenal performance in front of her to learn from & if she or even the director were having troubles in elaborating Fatima’s character, they could’ve easily taken some inspiration from Aliya Imam because her performance was far more stronger, in terms of acting & appearance & she literally did justice to Fatima, so much so that when I read the novel a couple of years ago, every single time I read Fatima’s scenes, I only had an image of Aliya Imam in my mind. I really hope now when Fatima’s character has finally made a reentry, the director shifts the focus from Mansoor/Haroon’s story to her side of the story because her journey was full of beautiful lessons that she would teach to her children, some very emotional moments that they as a close-knit family shared with each other, where they lived for each other & so many other beautiful things like these. Honestly speaking, I hate to say this but I feel Yasra Rizvi has ruined the charm of Fatima’s character because Umera Ahmed’s concept behind Fatima’s character was so beautiful, it was about a journey of a woman who didn’t have an outer beauty & she came from a very dark place, but due to her own wisdom & the motherly instincts, she grew into such a wonderful human being who was beautiful from the inside & was known for her beautiful nature. I wish, I so wish Yasra Rizvi & even the director had understood the essence of Fatima’s character & had worked harder to elaborate that on screen.

Overall, this episode was done really well with some very effortless performances. I like how all the actors don’t seem forceful with their acting & because of that they make it look like they have owned the characters assigned to them. Yes, at times, Ushna Shah does seems like a weakling but she has done a fairly decent job as Rakshi. I am sure things are going to get a lot more interesting so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 10 Review – Things Are About To Fall Apart!

0

Ohkay so, the story & the direction is one thing but another thing that is working for me the most in this drama is the pace. I love how the director so far has succeeded in keeping all the episodes quite happening. The way the story has been developing in each & every episode is making it a very interesting watch. I like how things are not being dragged & every episode brings a lot of changes with it.

We got to see how Mansoor was struggling in his marriage with Muneeza. Mansoor has been an ideal husband & a very good father, he never faltered in fulfilling his responsibilities but seems like Muneeza got a little too comfortable in her life that she forgot that she had some duties towards her husband too. Muneeza & Ambar are very much alike, they both are stubborn & love to have things their way, but one thing that sets Ambar apart is the kindness in her heart & how she puts her privileges to good use. Muneeza on the other hand is quite self-absorbed, which is why she has started taking Mansoor for granted & she doesn’t even realize it. For the first time we saw that Mansoor started drawing some comparisons between his wife & his secretary who gave him the utmost attention, which actually suggested that things were about to fall apart & Muneeza was not doing anything to help the situation further!

Things have been quite rocky between Shahista & Kamal too. On the surface, they might seem like a perfect couple, living a life of luxury but only Shahista knows what she is going through because the remembrance of her lost child hasn’t allowed her to move forward & accept her kids because she is still stuck in the past. Shahista till date hasn’t forgotten about Shaheer & that is why, she decided to hire someone to find him.

Rakshi saw how a single phone call from Mansoor was enough to put an end to her misery, may be that’s why she got a little more attentive towards Mansoor as she wanted to compensate & reciprocate the kindness he has extended towards her so far & that is what gave Mansoor an edge to draw a comparison between Muneeza & Rakshi. Muneeza can’t stand Rakshi & that is why she flipped out the moment she found out that Mansoor has not only hired her but has been spending time with her. Shabana used that card to get back at Muneeza because till date, Shabana assumed that Muneeza & Mansoor had a perfect relationship, but when she spotted Mansoor with Rakshi, she realized that Muneeza’s position wasn’t as strong as Shabana always thought it was.

I like the fact that just when things start to settle, the director introduces new set of characters. This time around, we got to see Roshaan, Mansoor’s son who came back from abroad after completing his studies. Then we also got to see Fatima & her kids. Fatima has raised 3 children out of which 2 are the twins that Zarka gave birth to, that made an appearance in this episode. Both the siblings shared a typical sibling moment with each other where the brother teased his sister & she was mad at him. I enjoyed watching the new entries & I must say, I am really really happy that finally Fatima’s character has made an entry again in the story, which definitely tells that things are going to get a lot more interesting.

So, Ambar once again told Haroon Kamal how she can’t stand him & how she doesn’t like his attention or his company. May be that’s why we saw what Haroon Kamal did by planting a seed in Mansoor’s mind that he should get married to his secretary for the sake of business. Haroon Kamal is someone who always believes in getting back at the person who insults him & he always settles the score in a very odd way, so this is what made me feel that he told Mansoor to get married to Rakshi because he knew that this way, Ambar will suffer emotionally & that will give him immense pleasure of ruining her perfect little life where she has been a center of everyone’s attention, especially her father’s. Haroon Kamal understood that Ambar was a tough cookie to crack, so that is why he targeted her Achilles heel & targeted that relationship which he knew would hurt & affect her the most.

Even though Mansoor was thinking on those lines, but a little bit of push from Haroon Kamal was enough for him to wage a war against Muneeza, that is why, the moment Muneeza tried to confront him, Mansoor told her that she was just a liability in his life, nothing more nothing less. It seems that even Rakshi has started to spend time with Mansoor & may be she has given him some kind of hope, because of which he gave Muneeza such a harsh reaction when she spoke against Rakshi.

Overall, this episode was quite happening too. In this particular episode, I liked how there wasn’t a continuity between the scenes, even though everything seemed a little haphazard, that is what kept things quite interesting. A lot of things were happening at all the fronts & everyone was dealing with one thing or another, which made the episode quite engaging. I must say, the director has tackled this script brilliantly so far & I am sure things are going to stay the same till the drama will last. Thora Sa Aasman Episode 09 – A Selfless Friendship!

0

Ohkay so, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode of Thora Sa Aasman as well. I must say, for a change, I am liking this drama because even though it is focusing on showcasing the realities, it has got nothing to do with the realities of ‘marital life’ that our writers these days are obsessed with. Even though I know that the dramas that are based on the novels rarely do justice to the essence of it but I feel that our novel writers explore more options & cover different stories in their work, without making the marital problems the focal point of their writings. So, for that reason I think the drama-makers should explore more such novels & base their dramas on them as it shows a very different perspective on life & the real life issues in a very different light too. I enjoy watching Thora Sa Aasman for the main reason that even though everything that they are showing is based on reality, it still seems refreshing because it is different to what we all are used to watching.

Ambar went out of the way to help her friend Rakshi because this is who she is & she doesn’t put much thought into what everyone else says if she makes up her mind regarding something. Ambar met Rakshi & found out all the problems that her friend was facing but just when she realized that Saiqa was in no mood for a legal fight to bring justice to her dead daughter, Ambar suggested that Rakshi, along with her mother & sister should move to a new apartment because their lives were at stake in that area. Even though Muneeza, Talha & Shabana, everyone opposed Ambar, she knew she had to do something for her friend & that is why she asked for Mansoor’s help because she knew that her father will never say no to her.

Rakhsi not only got a new place to live because of Ambar’s help, but because of her referral, Rakhsi scored a job as Mansoor’s secretary. Mansoor has started doing everything that Haroon Kamal tells him to do. Haroon Kamal is trying to turn Mansoor into someone exactly like himself, that is why he is not only teaching him how to be independent but slowly & steadily, Haroon intends to turn Mansoor into a ruthless & practical businessman. Seems like Haroon’s influence has started to affect Mansoor & Masood’s lives, but at the moment it is Masood who can see what is happening whereas Mansoor is unaware of the difficulties he will end up facing by letting go of his brother & nephew’s hand on Haroon Kamal’s suggestion.

Talha has taken his friendship with Aneela a notch higher, that is why he has started to meet her & her mother, without any good reason. It seems that Talha has started taking Aneela’s company as an escape from Ambar’s tantrums & dictatorship & he has started finding solace in Aneela. Even though Talha might not say it, but deep down he has started to see how dominating Ambar is & how spoiled she is to some extent too. Talha loves Ambar but it is so obvious that he is tired of keeping up with her orders. Even though Ambar & Talha always believed in trusting each other completely, the way Talha hid the fact that he was at Aneela’s place was the first step that he took in breaking Ambar’s trust. I like Ambar’s nature for the fact that she is just the way she is, she is not conniving or manipulative or she doesn’t believe in hurting other people whereas all the people around her are exactly like that & to some extent Talha as well because he is not being honest about his & Aneela’s friendship. People find easy to judge someone like Ambar whereas she is far better than those who believe in ruining people’s lives or who strive to achieve something that belongs to someone else!

Haroon Kamal still seems interested in Ambar but I loved the way she didn’t sugarcoat her feelings & let him know what she thought of him. I am sure this won’t stop Haroon Kamal from making advances at her because he believes in getting what he likes. It seems that Rakshi has made quite an impression on Mansoor, due to her hard-work & sincerity towards the job. I like the fact that even though Rakshi knows that by having Ambar by her side, things will never go wrong but she is not exploiting the kindness & generosity of her friend or her father. Rakshi didn’t share her emotional baggage with Mansoor until he asked & that’s when she saw that even he walked an extra mile to help her & make her feel secure.

Things are going pretty smooth in this drama & even though I see a little tweaking in the original story, I am definitely liking what I am watching. I must say that the girl who has played the character of Ambar has done a brilliant job in terms of acting. Even though the rest of the cast has done an amazing job too but I feel that Ambar’s character had to be portrayed a certain way & it feels that the actress has owned this character a 100% & has done justice to it every step of the way. I feel that the way Ambar’s character has been projected so far, you can’t dislike her for who she is because you understand her honesty & her loyalty towards the people she loves, which is commendable. I must also add that I am liking the director’s approach in unfolding the story, it seems that he knows what needs to be shown at what time & he is doing just exactly that. I like that they have so many stories & tracks in this drama because with every change in the scene, the entire story changes which keeps your interest alive while watching the episode. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode & I am sure you guys did too, so please don’t forget to share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 08 – Another Great Episode!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was quite interesting like all the previous episodes. I really like how the director has kept a special focus on the pace of the drama. Even though there are so many characters but every single time a new character gets introduced, the old characters along with the new ones are given enough coverage to make the viewers form a bond with them. I like how the director has kept everything quite effortless & everything flows in harmony together, also another intelligent approach of the director that I would like to talk about is the perfect balance that he has maintained in between the contrast of situations as it immediately changes the perspective & the mood of the viewer with a change in every single scene.

Ambar & Rakhsi have become quite good friends & no one around Ambar understands what is it about Rakshi that has impressed her so much that she can’t stop talking about her. Ambar has let everyone around know that she & Rakshi share a very good bond & more than that, Ambar feels for Rakshi because she knows that the circumstances in her life are tough. I like how Ambar has pride in her friendship with Rakshi as well as a sympathy for her friend too, it showcases how Ambar has a very big heart & she is selfless when it comes to the people that she loves. Rakshi is just as much impressed with Ambar & even though she sees her as a good friend, Rakshi is in an awe of Ambar because Ambar has all those things in her life that Rakshi doesn’t.

Haroon Kamal once again made an entry & his brief interaction with Ambar was enough to let us know that he is just the same person he was years & years ago. He couldn’t keep his eyes of Ambar & that is why he chose to use the collaboration with Mansoor as a means of getting closer to Ambar. Haroon Kamal hated what Baqir Sherazi demanded & how he wanted to bring Shahista in his life but now at this stage, Haroon Kamal is doing the exact same thing or may be even worse because he has his sights at a girl who qualifies to be his daughter. Haroon Kamal is a like a contagious disease because everywhere he goes, he only brings negativity with him. Haroon Kamal didn’t even think twice before planting a seed of doubt in Mansoor’s mind against his brother. Mansoor is the one who has invested a big percentage of money in this business but Masood is like a partner who contributes in the business mentally, just as much as Mansoor does, but just because Haroon told him that he had an upper hand, Mansoor didn’t even question the thought & went ahead with the collaboration & didn’t bother discussing things with Masood, let alone inform him about what he was going to do. Haroon Kamal is quite persuasive & Mansoor seems simple minded in that regard, so I am sure, Haroon will make the most of the situation without even allowing Mansoor to know about the game that he is playing upon him!

Talha has started to give Aneela a little more importance & attention than he should be giving. It is interesting that even though Safiya & Osama are younger than Amber & Talha, they both are far more mature & wise in comparison to their elder siblings. Osama also finds it odd that Talha is being a little more cordial with Aneela as he can already see where things are headed. Talha has started to see Aneela in a positive light & I am sure it won’t take him too long before he will start comparing Ambar with Aneela & will end up seeing Aneela as a far more better & compatible match to him than Ambar. It is ironic because Ambar & Talha believed that the strength of their relationship was the trust they had in each other but sadly, that trust is subsiding while both of them are oblivious of it.

It was amusing that where Haroon should’ve been happy at the mention of Asad wanting Ambar to become his life partner, he got a little uneasy & didn’t seem amused. Haroon must not be in his right state of mind to believe that he will be able to woo a girl like Ambar who is probably half his age. Muneeza’s attitude with Rakhsi was another nudge on the condescending attitude that the standard conscious people have. Muneeza wouldn’t have had any issues if Rakshi had belonged to a sound background or lived in a locality that Muneeza must’ve approved, but just because Rakshi didn’t fit the bill, Muneeza disapproved of the friendship Ambar shares with her & also told her to maintain a distance. I liked how Ambar took a stand for Rakshi because she is clean & bighearted in comparison to Muneeza.

Rakhsi is more or less facing all the problems that her mother Saiqa faced & she is enduring the brunt of all the social pressures that sadly people who belong to such class of society go through. Even though Saiqa compromised on certain limits to give her daughters a better living, she couldn’t change the condition of her family considerably neither she could change the fate of her daughters. One of her daughters got murdered by her husband & Saiqa knows she can not do anything. Even though Rakshi wants to fight, Saiqa’s hesitance is justified as she knows that the world is brutal out there, especially for those who don’t have a support system of men like fathers or brothers, so Saiqa fears that the one who will end up losing everything in this battle will be Rakshi only, that is why she doesn’t want her to start anything. Sadly, the police inspector knows that Saiqa’s family won’t be able to win a case & he left quite an impression, so he is making most out of the situation.

Overall, this episode was quite interesting & I honestly am having a great time watching this drama. Everything has been packaged nicely & now I am eagerly waiting too see Fatima’s side of the story too & as the things are progressing, I have a feeling that she will make an appearance too. I just hope that the director will do justice to her story & character & also, the way things have been dealt with so far, I feel that the director won’t let us down. Thora Sa Aasman Episode 07 – So Far So Good!

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was a good watch for sure. I really like how without wasting much time, the director is taking the story forward & every episode gives us something new because it not only makes things interesting but also keeps the attention of the viewers intact too.

Fareeda Apa played her game really really well & this time with much more confidence because she had a support of her daughter Aneela as well. Aneela might not say it but she definitely dreams of being with a guy like Talha who not only is decent but is financially sound too. Fareeda Apa obviously doesn’t want Masood & Mansoor’s children to get married because she knows that way, their mutual wealth will remain within their families & her dream of seeing her children getting settled will be ruined. Where Fareeda wants Aneela to get married to either Talha or Osama, she has a son too who she wants to see getting married to either Ambar or Safiya, because of obvious reasons. Fareeda however succeeded in creating a misunderstanding between the two families as she knew that both Muneeza & Shabana won’t budge & that way her future plans will work.

Muneeza didn’t take the news well as she is not only level headed but a tad bit arrogant as well, as she knows that her daughters will easily get married & Talha & Osama are not the last guys on earth. Mansoor might be younger be he has an upper-hand in comparison to Masood because it seems like it was his business that he allowed Masood to become a part of, that is why both Mansoor & Muneeza don’t really shy away from taking a stand as they know they have an edge over Masood & Shabana.

It was interesting to see how Shabana, without saying much about Ambar & Muneeza accepted everything. She knew that she did say a word or two but if everyone had read between the lines, they would’ve known that Fareeda magnified everything to benefit from it the most. Shabana also had no chance to succumb to the pressures because she saw that her family would end up suffering from every single angle be it financial crisis or social standing as they know it a bit too well that Mansoor’s association with them might come with a territory but has its own benefits too. Shabana & Masood tried to be a bigger person in this matter & apologized which was accepted halfheartedly by Muneeza & Mansoor. Even though they reconciled but Fareeda knows that she has planted the seed of doubt in their hearts & mind forever & it won’t take her a lot of time & effort to achieve her goal of separating these two families in the future.

Even though Ambar might come across as a spoiled brat, she has a lot of niceness in her heart & that makes her personality likable. She is just like any other girl, who behaves that way because of the way she has been pampered by her parents & then her fiancé. Ambar is independent & she doesn’t like reporting every single thing to Talha, which he finds a little hard to accept & that is why, he doesn’t take the news of Ambar’s participating in a college play a bit too well. Talha & Ambar might love each other but they have a personality clash where Talha wants to feel that he’s the one who has an authority in this relationship, but Ambar’s level-headedness doesn’t allow him to feel that way because she is not only opinionated, but she is independent too & she is not a typical girl who believes in reporting everything to her fiancé, that too which she chooses to do for herself in her life.

Ambar has come across as girl in college named Rakshi & seems like Rakshi has a humble background. Ambar & Rakhsi instantly form a connection because not only Ambar seems to like her, Rakhsi seems a little too impressed with Ambar as well & the moment Ambar starts a conversation, Rakhsi eases her way into her life without making anything seem effortful. Ambar’s friends are not a fan of an idea that Ambar has befriended Rakshi but Ambar doesn’t seem to mind as she is quite kindhearted in her own way.

Overall, this episode was done really really well & I am glad that even though the misunderstanding that Fareeda Apa created was huge, it was dealt & finished off within this episode & not only that, along with everything happening between the elders, the director gave enough time to the younger lot as well where he introduced the character of Rakshi at the right time. I am definitely looking forward to what is yet to come & I really hope that the pace, which for me is the strongest point of this drama stays the same till the end. I will say that the director has tackled this script with a lot of intelligence & I am really happy I decided to tune to this drama. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman Episode 06 – Shift In The Story!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was quite good & interesting to watch. I must say, the pace of the drama is working for me the most because just when we were getting a little bored with the coverage of one track, they introduced in a lot of new faces & the scenario of the story changed completely. I am definitely looking forward to all the tracks & their stories that have yet to unravel.

So, Baqir Sherazi sent a proposal for Haroon Kamal through Sabiha, where he suggested Haroon to divorce Shahista otherwise Baqir will make sure that Haroon faces a loss in his business. As hideous as the idea sounded, what I liked the most about the entire situation was that it made the ruthless & emotionally absent Haroon Kamal vulnerable for a moment. Haroon’s arrogance & social standing actually made him believe that he had control over everything & that everything will always fall in its place for him every single time but it was good to see that a man, far more powerful than him made Haroon reflect on himself & reminded him of the fact that he was no different to any other regular human being & he was just as weak as anyone can be.

It was for the first time that we saw the reality of a liberal Haroon Kamal who, by the circumstances, was forced to doubt his wife & her loyalty towards him. Haroon actually posed to be quite a broad minded person who didn’t mind seeing his wife being friends with men who had more power & who could help him in his business in any way possible, but when things got out of control, he conveniently blamed Shahista for giving an edge to Baqir due to which he believed that he could get her in a barter bargain. This was also a slap on Haroon Kamal’s face & was something that bruised his ego because Baqir in just a second made him realize about the sort of a person Haroon was & how Baqir saw him as just an opportunist who could be lured easily using money as a bait. Haroon never really imagined that people could see him as such a weak person having no substance at all.

Another face that we saw of Haroon Kamal was a depiction of his double standards. Shahista is expecting their baby & just because the time span & timeline of their relation could raise questions against the baby, Haroon didn’t mind telling her straight away that she had to put an end to this ray of hope in her life. This was something that took Shahista in her past where it looked like Haroon has taken away her baby from her previously too. Sadly, Shahista fell into this trap of love with a wrong person because he is the one who demands & Shahista is the one who has to compromise every single time. Haroon is quite a superficial person who believes in fake standards because at one hand, he can not see people questioning his sister & her family, but on the other, he doesn’t mind having an affair with Zarka, getting married to her stealthily & then also doesn’t mind depriving his wife of all those rights that she is entitled to. Also, the way Shahista & Haroon opted for court marriage highlights his double standards a bit more where he conveniently fooled someone’s daughter & forced her to take such a step that only became an embarrassment for her parents & that is why her parents have till date not forgiven her for what she did!

Well, Baqir Shirazi along with Sabiha Judoon died in a car accident & I am kind of relieved that we’re past this triangle that wasn’t sparking much interest, but I am interested to see what life has in store for Shahista & Haroon!!!

Well, we got introduced to the families of two brothers Mansoor & Masood. Masood’s (Anwar Iqbal) family consists of his wife & his two sons Talha (Umair Laghari) & Osama & Mansoor’s (Babar Ali) family consists of his wife Muneeza (Lubna Aslam), his daughters & son; Ambar (Sahar Afzal), Safiya (Aleezay Tahir) & Roshaan. Ambar & Talha, Safiya & Osama are engaged to be married. In this episode we got introduced to their characters in a very appropriate manner & I am definitely looking forward to their stories.

Ambar is a daddy’s girl & in the very first encounter she can come across as someone who is a spoiled child who believes in having everything her way but as you get to know her, she also has kindness in her heart that her mother most certainly doesn’t approve of & this is something that doesn’t make her character black & white, it’s like she has different shades, some of which can be appreciated & some of them can make her look a little unreasonable. It looks like Ambar is her father’s favorite, that is why she makes the most of his kindness & for that reason, Mansoor can never deny any of her demands. Ambar has not only been spoiled by her father, but even her fiancé Talha believes in doing everything that she says. Talha loves & respects her a lot & they both believe that the factor of trust is what has kept their relationship strong over the years.

Mansoor’s wife Muneeza is enjoying her luxurious life & she doesn’t realize that all the comforts that she has can make people around her a little envious of her lifestyle. Muneeza also doesn’t mind flaunting how her husband Mansoor has given her the control over the household & she makes the most of it. Muneeza seems just as spoiled as Ambar & she doesn’t look like someone who believes in making compromises, that is why just when Ambar & Talha had a tiff, Muneeza held Talha responsible for spoiling Ambar’s mood in stead of making her daughter understand that she shouldn’t be so rigid. The second daughter of the family; Safiya in comparison to Ambar seems a lot more mature & understanding. It looks like Osama likes Safiya a lot too & being her fiance, wants to spend time with her but Safiya doesn’t take advantage of the liberty her parents have given to their children because she is far more rooted & simple.

Collage 02

Masood’s wife & Talha’s mother finds it a little odd how much freedom her daughter-in-law to-be has & how Ambar has her son wrapped around her finger. She also feels the envy when it comes to the life Muneeza is living as she finds her husband far more accommodating & understanding in comparison to her husband Masood. It seems that Muneeza or Mansoor & Masood have an elder sister & she is also quite interested in Ambar & Safiya & for the obvious reasons because she knows that Ambar comes from a very sound background & she tells Muneeza that at least she should have accepted her son’s proposal for one of her daughters. Apa also has a daughter who she seems a little worried about too as she wants her to get married in to a family that has a financial stability.

It looks like Haroon Kamal has started exploring more business options & he is doing collaborations with well-established companies & for that reason, Mansoor believes that he should propose a venture deal to Haroon Kamal because he know that the association of his name with their family business will not only bring a lot of advantages but will help them in raising their graph too. Things are definitely going to get more interesting & I can’t wait to see more.

Overall, this episode was quite interesting & I hope that the pace of the drama stays the same. I am glad that this story has a lot of characters & a lot of tracks that is why things don’t become slow at all because there’s so much to explore that the change in the scene brings a change of track & perspective with it. I will say that the director has handled the script quite well & all the actors are doing a fairly decent job but I do find their timing a little off which makes the flow of the scene a little choppy, it looks like that the actors don’t have that understanding & because of that we see some awkward pauses in between their conversations. Anyways, as far as the story is concerned, I feel that a little tweaking has been done but for that reason, I find this drama a lot more engaging because these changes not only come as a surprise but leave you guessing about the scenarios at times too, which is a bonus. Thora Sa Aasman – Episode 05!

0

Ohkay so, this episode was interesting, but I am concerned about one thing & that is the lacking similarities between the script of this drama & the original novel itself. I do understand that when a novel is dramatized, a little bit of tweaking is required as drama & novel are two different mediums of story-telling, but what I am not understanding is the reason behind changes that have been made in the original story because if I consider the story of the novel itself, I find it just perfect for it to be dramatized, so not sure if they will be able to justify these changes that they have made. I know the drama-makers have tried to simplify the story by interlinking the tracks of all the characters in the early stages of the drama but what I am most concerned about is the track of Fatima because I have started to feel that she has become a supporting character in the course of the story being over-simplified for the drama, whereas in the novel, she was the integral part of the entire story. I hope they do justice to her character & do not compromise on her value because Fatima is the binding force & is the main part of this story.

Baqir Shirazi is fixated with Shahista Kamal & that is why only for the pleasure of her company, he has started to broaden his trap by preying upon Haroon Kamal too. Since the day Shahista has grabbed Baqir’s attention, things related to her have started to unravel in front of him & it seems like what he is wishing for is meant to happen because first, he found out that Haroon needed his approval for his business deals & second, he found out the major link through which Baqir could black-mail Haroon & that was Zarka. Baqir found out that Haroon not only had relations with Zarka but he married her as well & that was something that Baqir decided he could use to put Haroon in his right place & take a step closer to Shahista Kamal.

Only a single meeting between Baqir & Haroon was enough for Haroon to know what Baqir knew about him & how he was ready to use his personal life details against him, that is why he told Shahista to draw a line, but then, Haroon has always been quite opinionated & he never really cared about what Shahista might have to say about his reputation, so to see Haroon getting intimidated by Baqir wasn’t really in line with his character. Haroon has been ruthless & he never really held back in letting Shahista know what sort of a person he was even after she spotted him with Zarka in a shopping mall, so to see Haroon getting burdened by a detail of his past was quite unlike him.

Fatima came across Shahista in quite an early stage of the drama, however she thanked Shahista for the help she extended & later with the help of Rabeea, she met Sadia & started living with her at her home. Sadia is a new entry, in the story & in the drama as well because her character never existed in the novel. I somehow feel by making things easier for Fatima & by showing that everyone around her has been quite generous with her, the director has compromised on Fatima’s potential & the emotional strength that she embodied. Through Fatima’s character, the drama-makers could’ve sent out such a strong message that a woman can achieve whatever she wants to against all the odds, because of her will but somehow, I feel the character of Fatima has been made weak & the purpose that she had is not coming through like why did she adopt Shaheer & also, how will she stay strong & fend for herself because as per the novel, Fatima’s entire journey was quite inspiring & it showcased the struggles that a woman like Fatima had to go through who chose to live life on her terms & conditions & who shaped up not only her life but the life of those children that came into her life. In this episode I actually detested seeing Fatima in the background like a supporting character, as if she had no personality & had no direction in life & then I also disliked seeing the actual supporting characters come into the foreground & getting all the coverage!

Sadia happens to be Zarka’s sister & seems like even she married someone out of her love for him, just like Zarka married Haroon because she loved him. Sadia chose a totally different path in her life where despite having nothing, she feels she has everything. Zarka on the other hand after giving birth to the twins, has once again decided to get married & revive her career that suffered due to her marriage & then her pregnancy. Zarka could also have lived a fulfilling life if only her husband wasn’t so selfish & so emotionally absent. Anyways, Zarka’s mother thinks it is better for Sadia to look after Zarka’s twins because she doesn’t have a child of her own & this should be a secret that Zarka’s potential husband should never find out about.

Saqia has made quite a progress in her life & she is ready to live independently. Saiqa has forgotten all about those limits that her parents & her good-for-nothing husband set for her & that is why, she has gained a confidence that even confuses her parents now. Saiqa knows she has a strong back due to which she can deal with Zafar & now when she is fending for herself, Zafar holds no importance in her life to sit & listen to his taunts & commands. Looks like Shahista is still in search of a baby & that is why she keeps on visiting the orphanage & now it has been made clear that even Haroon is not oblivious of the reason why Shahista goes to Hyderabad. A lot of things have yet to unravel & I can’t wait to find out more.

Overall, this episode was interesting & the preview of the next episode suggested that things will move forward. I wish the director hadn’t kept all the focus on Shahista/Haroon/Baqir’s side of the story & had given Fatima’s character the due coverage too because her story is what I was most excited about. I wish as the episodes progress, Fatima’s character takes a front seat & her journey is covered appropriately too because right now I am not feeling her character at all as she is looking like someone who has no clue & is only making through life with the helping hand of others. Fatima’s character was the most positive character of this entire novel/story & I wish we get to see more of her. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman – Episode 04!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was quite interesting. I am glad that the director is taking the story forward at a decent pace, as there’s a lot left to be conveyed & that’s why all the tracks are developing swiftly & all the questions are being answered without leaving viewers wondering about things on their own. Also, I must say, I really liked how this episode in particular juxtaposed between the mentality of an elite & the lower class of the society & that has to be my favorite aspect of this entire episode.

Haroon is ruthlessly practical, that is why he knew that his wife could easily achieve what he couldn’t in the matters concerning Baqir Shirazi, that is why even after Baqir’s indirect yet direct insult, Haroon didn’t mind sending Shahista to meet him again because he was confident that Baqir would never refuse Shahista’s request. It is actually unfortunate that despite having a wife, Baqir has his sights on Shahista & he has gotten this edge only because he knows that her husband Haroon is shameless when it comes to his personal benefits, so Baqir is making the most of the dependency Haroon has on him regarding his business.

Baqir ended up informing Shahista about Haroon’s reputation & seems like this was for the first time when Shahista not only confronted her husband, but threatened to leave him in case she ever spots him with another woman. I felt that this threat came a bit late & didn’t even leave much of an impact because it’s not like Shahista hasn’t seen that scenario till date. Shahista did spot Haroon with Zarka in a shopping mall & he brushed all her concerns under the carpet. If only Shahista had taken a stand back then, may be Haroon wouldn’t have done what he just did with Zarka. Just like Haroon got married to her out of the blue, he decided to throw her out of his life just like that too, but what’s sadder is that he doesn’t want to own his child that Zarka is carrying now. Zarka has lost everything & she is paying a huge price for trusting such an emotionally absent businessman. Sadly, Zarka was just a flavor of the month & just when Haroon felt that he was benefiting nothing out of this relationship, she decided to call it quits!

Saiqa, who’s trying hard to make the ends meet, falls in a deep pit when her husband, who has pretty much disowned her creates a scene accusing her of infidelity. Zafar, in stead of giving a shut-up call to his friend, makes a point to drag Saiqa in front of everyone to let them & her know that he is still the supreme authority in her life. Zafar is a depiction of those hypocrite men of the society, who find no shame in leaving their wives & their daughters in the lurch, but when they hear the rumors, they are the first ones to make a commotion about how their wives are disloyal & unfaithful & how their dignity means everything to them. Saiqa comes from such a background where men are considered supreme, despite them never proving themselves to be, but still their verdict is taken to be a final word & then, a woman is forced to face the brunt for the things she might never have even thought of doing. Saiqa’s parents made sure that she doesn’t leave their house but when they realized that feeding Saiqa & her three daughters was not something that they could afford, they allowed her to resume her job. This was another mind-set that was unveiled that those who are poor can only afford the luxury of ‘dignity’ for a short span of time & when they are forced to wake up & smell the coffee, they go against their word & curb their values.

Who would’ve thought that the same Fatima, who was always accused of being ill-mannered & loud would get the label of being polite? Fatima’s politeness surprised people around her & may be it is the addition of Shaheer in her life that has forced her to do some thinking & reflect on the fact that now she has a child to take care of & more than that she has to be a positive influence on the child that she is raising. Shaheer has brought drastic changes in Fatima’s personality & she might not be his biological mother, but she sure is taking her status as a mother a bit too seriously, which is quite heart-warming. The way Fatima cried for Shaheer was actually quite overwhelming, which proved Fatima’s perspective that you don’t have to give birth to a child to be called his mother, you can become one if you think of yourself as one.

So, it was Shahista Kamal who sent Aliya to the orphanage to check on Shaheer. I am sure there’s a lot to this track that will unravel in the episodes to come. It was a blessing for Fatima that Rabeea ended up being Shahista’s friend, that is why Shahista stepped forward to bail Fatima out of the prison as she couldn’t resist seeing the sight of a child like Shaheer without his mother.

The note at which the episode ended actually came as a surprise to me. Saiqa of today ended up listening to the advice that was given to her by the Saiqa of tomorrow (referring to the conversation she had with the woman in the previous episode). Saiqa ended up succumbing to the pressures that the future of her daughters inflicted on her mind. Sadly, she was a girl who was trying hard to make a decent & honest living for her daughters but the society pushed to a limit where it made her realize that no matter how hard she protects herself or no matter how much she’ll sacrifice, it will only take one lie & just one rumor for them to tear her into pieces & assassinate her character mercilessly. Sadly, what Saiqa did shed a light on all such women who give men the edge & allow those men to exploit them because of lost faith in people surrounding them which unfortunately include their families too. It was the betrayal of Zafar & the lack of confidence that her parents showed in her, which drove Saiqa to take a short cut in life which she at one point didn’t even want to think about. This is why in the beginning I said that this episode highlighted the contrast between the mind set that the people from two different social classes endorse, where in elite class it was the husband who was shamelessly making the most of the affection that another man had towards his wife only because it guaranteed him a monetary gain that he was after & in the lower class of the society, just a sight of a woman standing with a man was enough to ignite the fire & assassinate her character to a point where she herself didn’t mind compromising it for the sake of her children & forced herself to do which was most certainly not right. Beautifully written & executed I must say!

Overall, this episode was really interesting. I know the theme of the drama is a bit on the serious & mature side but this entire story & all the characters have a meaning attached to them. The preview seemed interesting too, I am sure Baqir is not going to stop & looks like Zarka will end up becoming a fish-bone stuck in Haroon’s throat, which he most certainly won’t be expecting. Even though I have liked all the actors & their acting but only in this episode, I repeat only this time around I found Zeba Bakhtiyar’s dialogue delivery a bit weak & Alyy Khan’s expressions a bit too flat, which I am sure will improve in the episodes that are yet to come. The direction, as always was on-point. Please share your thoughts about this interesting episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman – Episode 03!

0

Ohkay so, this episode of Thora Sa Aasman was quite interesting. I am really happy with the pace of the drama because thankfully they have so many stories & tracks to cover that they can’t afford slowing down the pace, which makes me hopeful that things will remain exactly like this till the drama will last. I must say, the director has given due coverage to each & every character & has established their tracks appropriately, for which he deserves a round of applause.

Haroon Kamal got married to Zarka to prove the love he had for her but he being a free bird doesn’t believe in enduring any sort of pressures, that is why the moment Zarka’s mother Dilshaad Begum started doubting his intentions, he came clean & told her that he never intended to get married to Zarka in the first place & it was only on her request that he took such a step. Zarka is actually tired of living the life that her mother has planned for her, that is why like a gullible fool, she thought that she found her home when she met Haroon Kamal. If Zarka hadn’t allowed her love for Haroon cloud her judgments, she would’ve known that Haroon doesn’t know what loyalty is because he would’ve never ever cheated on his ‘beautiful’ wife that he time & again spoke so causally about. Zarka’s happiness was short-lived & unfortunately, she was made familiar with the true face of Haroon Kamal just in the early stages of her marriage.

Haroon actually made the first move by sending an expensive gift for Baqir Shirazi’s wife in order to impress him but he didn’t know who he was dealing with. This entire scenario sheds a light on the ugly face of the elite society & the things that transpire behind the closed doors. All this while, Baqir didn’t mind eyeing Haroon’s wife Shahista shamelessly, but the moment he saw that Haroon made a gesture only to initiate family terms with him using a bait targeting his wife infuriated him quite a bit & he came up with a plan of insulting him on his face. Baqir actually knows what sort of a person Haroon Kamal is that is why he knew that he will hit a bulls-eye by sending an invitation to Shahista Kamal. As expected, Haroon told her to entertain Baqir because he wants to reap the benefits that this relationship will bring with it. I think either all the women around Haroon are too gullible or Haroon is quite a sweet-talker because it only took him a slight confession of love to convince Shahista that she should accept the dinner invitation that Baqir sent to her, while making her forget completely that he has been cheating on her.

Baqir got what he wanted & he killed two birds with one stone because he not only got to spend the time with Shahista, but he also made sure that Haroon gets his message loud & clear too. I liked how both Baqir & Haroon are still not in contact but are talking indirectly to each other, it’s like Baqir knows Haroon in & out & he also knows that Haroon definitely has an ulterior motive due to which he wants to become friends with him, that is why Baqir is making the most of the situation & putting it to good use by spending time with Shahista Kamal & by also displaying his power & status in front of Haroon Kamal. I think Shahista has spent enough time with Haroon to know him, therefore she shouldn’t let him use her as his stooge, but then may be she loves him so much that she is still hopeful that her husband will change completely & will become loyal to her.

Saiqa is finding it hard to cope up with what life has thrown at her & her circumstances are filling her with bitterness but what she didn’t know was that she had so many women around her who were in the same boat as her too. Saiqa never ever imagined that she will meet another Saiqa who will give her a futuristic perspective of what her life will turn out to be but then Saiqa is not too ambitious. Yes, she is frustrated & she is helpless but she still doesn’t believe in curbing everything for her own benefits, that is why the things she heard from her supervisor made her realize what she wants & what she’ll never settle for in her life.

Fatima’s mother finally found her & sadly, like always, she brought troubles with her. Fatima’s mother ended up telling everything to Askari Bee & things got even more difficult for her, but it is good to know that Fatima has Rabeea by her side who is ready to help her in every way possible. Fatima is someone who wants to live life on her terms & conditions but so far, she hasn’t succeeded because people around her believe that they are the ones who should be making decisions for her on her behalf. Fatima ended up getting jailed & this was something that she had never imagined. I really want to see what Fatima will do to shape her life up & how she will bring herself out of the misery. Unfortunately, the manager of the orphanage & Aliya have started looking for the boy that Aazar & Aasia adopted on behalf of Fatima, let’s see when their search will end & for how long Fatima will be able to keep Shaheer protected & hidden from the preying eyes.

Overall, this episode was very very interesting & face paced. The change of every single scene made things refreshing & it also changed the entire perspective because so much is happening at this point that it looks like a puzzle that you’re trying to solve, which is brilliant & sheds a light on the fact that this can only be a result of an intelligent writing. I must say the direction has been top-notch & so has been the acting & considering this being a GEO TV’s production, the production value of this drama is extremely good too. All the actors have given a perfect face to their respective characters & I am glad that apart from a few actors, this project doesn’t have quite a big names attached to it because these days the dramas that are not studded with star cast seem to do well actually, so for that reason I thank the casting directors of this drama immensely. Yes, there’s one thing that isn’t working for me & that is the usage of the OST throughout the episode, the soundtrack is alright but lyrics don’t really gel well with the situation but seems like they use it to add more depth in the scenes but it hardly pays off. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Thora Sa Aasman.

Thora Sa Aasman – Episode 01 & 02!

0

Ohkay so, the production of Mastermind Productions, direction of Nadeem Siddique & the writing of Umera Ahmed, Thora Sa Aasman started airing on Geo Entertainment 2 weeks ago. Thora Sa Aasman is a story based on the novel that has been dramatized & aired before on PTV but this time around Geo TV has decided to bring it to us with new faces & new look. Those who’ve read the novel will definitely know that they’re in for a ride & after watching first two episodes, I had a feeling that at least in these initial episodes, they did justice to the essence of the script & I hope they stay true to it right till the end too. Thora Sa Aasman has a lot of characters & I am sure a lot of new faces will be introduced along the line as well, but for now they set the grounds for what is yet to come by introducing us to the main characters in the initial episodes & for that I will say that the first two episodes were directed really well & were quite impressive in terms of story-telling & character introduction.

The first family of characters that we got introduced to was of Shahista Kamal (Zeba Bakhtiyar) & her husband Haroon Kamal (Alyy Khan). Shahista belongs to a humble & modest background where her parents being God-fearing people made sure that their daughters also followed the path that they saw their parents at, all their lives. Their lives turn upside down when they find out that Shahista is emotionally involved with Haroon. Haroon happens to be Shahista’s first cousin & looks like he & his father make quite a progress in their business of pharmaceuticals that too after shifting recently to Karachi. Shahista’s father (Qazi Wajid) doesn’t have a high opinion of his brother Kamal & his nephew Haroon because he feels that they don’t earn money with the legal means & also, their lifestyle & mentality is completely different which according to him is wrong. Haroon happens to be quite a ruthlessly practical person but somehow he falls for Shahista’s beauty & convinces her that he will give her the life that she has never lived & has never even imagined. Shahista falls prey to Haroon’s promises & opts for a court marriage because her parents tell her clearly that they will never allow her to get married to Haroon.

Collage 01

After Shahista’s decision of getting married to Haroon without their permission, Shahista’s parents find it hard to forgive her & just in a short span of time, Shahista starts realizing that her parents’s judgment about Haroon & his character wasn’t wrong. Haroon does get married to Shahista but he most certainly doesn’t believe in leading a conventional sort of a marital life. He clearly lets Shahista know that he wants his space & wants to maintain his lifestyle, therefore she shouldn’t worry much about him & to keep herself busy, she should get involved in the family business too. Shahista finds it hard to cope up with such a practical person & his thinking because this was not the sort of a marriage that she signed up for. Shahista hits the rock bottom when she spots Haroon Kamal with someone else. Haroon Kamal being drawn towards beautiful women falls for Zarka; a singer who sells her voice to make a living. Zarka’s mother warns her to not get involved with Haroon but she doesn’t pay heed to what her mother says as she finds herself falling more & more for the irresistible charm of Haroon Kamal.

Then comes the family of Fatima Mukhtar (Yasra Rizvi). Fatima, a middle aged woman with an unpleasant birthmark on her face that affects her overall outer beauty & her appearance, who has never heard a good thing about herself from her family members. Fatima’s family wants her to get married but she doesn’t believe in the societal norms & believes in living a life that she would choose for herself. Fatima’s straight forwardness is often deemed as a bad behavior which then becomes a reason why Fatima drifts away from her family. Fatima comes from a lower middle class family but she dreams high, not in terms of financial security but in terms of living her life freely according to her conditions & rules. With the help of her neighbors Aasia & Azar, Fatima adopts a child from an orphanage that she names Shaheer & she leaves her mother’s house & moves to Karachi. Aasia & Azar also settle abroad & Fatima believes that no one will be able to trace her in such a big city. Fatima rents an upper portion of Askari Bee’s (Parveen Akbar) house, who happens to be a relative of Azar as well, she then starts working in a school & finds the inner peace that she never experienced when she was with her family. However, that peace turns out to be short-lived as people around her start questioning her about her child & her husband that never existed but Fatima lies about her husband being in Dubai in order to protect Shaheer.

Collage 02

Then comes the family of Saiqa (Kaif Ghanavi), whose husband Zafar (Adnan Jillani) sends her off to her parents’ house blaming her for giving birth to 3 daughters. Saiqa’s parents already find it hard to make the ends meet & when she shows up at their doorstep, her mother tells her to start earning in order to support herself & her daughters. Saiqa takes a job at the nearby factory & finds out that she is not the only one struggling with this ordeal. Saiqa’s husband gets married & his second wife gives birth to a son, which seals the deal that there’s no turning back for Saiqa as her husband will never reconcile with her & she will have to fend for her daughters all her life, on her own.

A new entry that made an appearance was of Baqir Shirazi (Qaiser Nizamani), a minister who meets Shahista Kamal at a dinner & gets attracted towards her beauty. Just when Baqir finds himself trying hard to come in contact with Shahista by questioning his manager’s wife Sabiha Jadoon about her, Haroon Kamal on the other hand gets in contact with Bariq’s manager Jadoon to find out that it is Baqir who hasn’t signed the papers to approve the consignment he has been waiting for. I am sure this would make them cross paths with each other & then Baqir would do everything to draw Shahista’s attention towards him using Haroon Kamal’s dependency on him as a bait. Another track that got a little coverage belonged to the girl named Aliya who goes to the orphanage to ask about a Safiya’s child. I am sure it must be Shaheer that she’s looking for, but let’s see.

Collage 03

Overall, these two episodes were really good & were directed quite well too. I read the novel 2 years ago & for that reason I felt that they have done justice to the novel & the characters. Also I must say that nothing has been added & they have tried to keep things as real & as closer to the novel as possible which is a bonus. I am sure when the drama will progress we will develop a relationship with all the characters but I am most excited about the track & story of Fatima & her life because what she’s doing & what she will do is not going to be easy for her. I must say all the actors did really well in their respective characters & there are so many characters that will get introduced along the way. The OST is good to & it somehow compliments the situations that the characters are facing. I must say that I am really impressed with the way the director introduced the characters & their background stories in just these two episodes, it actually developed a strong base for what is yet to come. This story for sure is nothing less than a roller coaster ride so buckle up everyone. I am most certainly looking forward to the next episode, so please share your thoughts about the first two episodes of Thora Sa Aasman.
