I have signed a movie and I am playing a conman, who is inefficient and not a bright person, a clumsy character. It’s an intelligent script. In the next few months, the film will go on floors.

In conversation with Deccan Chronicle, Adnan speaking about his musical journey said: “I started playing piano at the age of five, and that was without my parent’s knowledge because they had asked me not to even touch the piano,” he laughed and added, “However, when my father came to know about my interest in music he supported me throughout.”
Reminiscing about his struggle to lose weight he said “I was never apologetic about how I looked. Because my relationship with my audience was of music and I always managed to please them. But, the change came in when my father took me to a doctor for a general check-up and after going through all my reports the doctor said that, it wouldn’t surprise him if my parents found me dead in a hotel room someday. When we were back at home, my father told me that he didn’t want me to die before him. My father has been my greatest inspiration and support system, and him saying this was a wake-up call for me.”
At last when asked about his decission of taking Indian Citizenship Adnan said: “I am a very emotional person. Koi mujhse pyaar se jaan maang le, toh woh bhi de dun. Indians have given me immense and unconditional love and I am very grateful. That was why I decided to apply for an Indian citizenship”
Earlier this year in an interview with Times of India Adnan said: I waited a decade and a half for it. When you have been wanting, aspiring for something for years and you feel in your mind that you are completely ready for it, you are in a state of numbness because you can’t believe that it is finally happening. I have lived in different parts of the world and experienced a lot of things, but there are certain moments in your life which are life-changing, this is one of those, it is a milestone. Even though I have lived here for a decade and a half, there is nothing that I can express to tell you what it feels like because it is something that is phenomenal. Having said that, I will look at it from another perspective also. I have always believed that there is no such thing as coincidence and I have always believed in destiny. After this experience, I am now a believer beyond a shadow of doubt.
My belief in destiny was absolutely well founded because I was born on August 15 — look at the irony, it could have been 14th, but no, He made sure I was born on the 15th of August — so that was the hint number one. And then I went to study in England and when I was doing my A-levels, I had to write a thesis in history on any world leader. I could have chosen Napoleon, George Washington… I chose Gandhi, that’s hint number two. A lot of people were like “are you sure you are going to be doing that” and I said “yeah, I have an admiration for him so I did that.” I read every possible book that I had, starting from ‘My Experiments With Truth’.
And then God felt, yaar, he still doesn’t get it, go and shift him over there, so He made me shift here and created a home for me which I felt was as home as it gets. And then He created the desire in me that I want to be here because I spiritually belong here. Today I can speak with conviction that all those things were not coincidence. There was the Lord above, constantly nudging me — ‘you are at the wrong place, you have another destiny’ — and it was here and that’s why I kept pushing for it. My wife is from Germany, for example. I could have gone to Germany, but I wanted to go for India. I feel that a certain quest was there right from my birth, it’s just that the paperwork took 46 years. I am reminded of a beautiful dialogue in the film Gandhi when he is sitting on the edge of the sea, he turns around to Martin Sheen and he says, “I have travelled so far and all I have done is come home.” That was a beautiful line, and I feel so much like that today. I have travelled so far, I have lived all over the world, and all I have done is come home, that’s a beautiful feeling.

The day that subject is resolved those donations will stop coming, and therefore there is going to be a big vacuum in the kitty which they have become used to.”
If you look at the timelines, every time there has been a close possibility of friendship, you suddenly have a Kargil, or a Pulwama, Siachin, and so on. These things have always happened when people have come close to finding friendship on an official level. This has always happened at the last minute, but this is not a coincidence, there is always a reason. So it is all economics.”

Adnan Malik confessed that he is a curious and keen observer of life. My passion for various forms of creative expression are outlets for these observations. Hence, in one lifetime I think I can be a director, an actor, a writer, a photographer, a traveler, an activist, a nature lover, a philanthropist or anything else that excites me.
What inspires him? ”Anything that makes me wake up in the morning and feel invigorated, and anything that keeps me fulfilled, engaged and is in line with my ethical beliefs is what I’m all about!”
”In certain situations I’m a self starter and in others I need a push. When I was younger, I think I was more in my head and would get caught up in inertia. I would overthink and paralyze myself.”
”I’m motivated by things that I believe in. Things that feel right. I used to be very heady, but I’ve really focused on my instinct now and use my gut to make decisions. So whatever feels authentic and right for my journey, is what I follow.”

It is no secret that Adnan Malik is a lover of nature because of which he loves to travel. ”I love traveling! My favorite film professor in College always said, “traveling is the single most effective way to become a better storyteller”. I love seeing the world and how people live. How people are different and how, ultimately, they are all the same. My job(s) allow me to travel a lot, whether its acting or directing!”
Adnan Malik made his acting debut with Sadqay Tumhare. Khalil ur Rehman’s script and the character of Khalil moved him, and in order to portray that character, he worked really hard. ”For Sadqay Tumhare, I watched old Amitabh films for research, I read Stanford Meisner’s classic book “On acting”, I designed my own wardrobe etc. In Gypsy, I even art directed my character’s room and brought all these props from my house and my production company. I needed his room to actually feel like the character’s room and since I had so many props that I believed Sikander would use, I just designed my room myself.”
When asked about the most exciting projects that he’s been a part of, he talked about three projects. He revealed that his personal favourite is his short film, Bijli about a Muslim transgender in New York that won the ”Best Short Film” award at the KARA Film Festival, Delhi Digital Film Festival, and was also a finalist the student academy awards in the US.
Also, not many people know that Adnan Malik was the video producer for Coke Studio from season 2-6. He spoke highly of Rohail Hyatt. ”Being the Video Producer for Coke Studio for 5 years, from season 2-6 was amazing! Rohail and Amber were amazing people to work with. I learnt a lot from Rohail about project management, music, video, spiritual and personal growth! I also got to work with a visionary brand: Coca Cola; developed a world class product that has made Pakistan proud, and collaborated with the best artists of this country!”
And then of course, Sadqe Tumhare is a highlight of his career. ”I think I lived as Khalil for at least a year after the shooting ended. It was a very profound experience for me to play that character!”
Talking about his work as a director, ”Directing comes very naturally to me! I really love it! I love directing commercials and music videos and cant wait to direct a film soon, Insha Allah! I love being the team leader and working with different departments to create “experiences” for viewers. I love working with my team!”
And about acting, ”Acting is very challenging and demands a very different part of me. I love losing and finding myself in a character and being part of a greater story. It’s amazing to “recreate” a life through your voice, body and actions.”

Talking to Dawn Images, he shared, “Sadqay Tumhare was such a learning curve for me and in its entirety, the whole process definitely took a toll on me; I had gotten emotionally involved with my character so I decided it would be best to take some time off, return to directing. As time passed, it became evident to me how much acting had fine-tuned my directing skills as well and I just knew it was time to go back to school. I read a bunch of scripts, there was also interest from across the border but nothing clicked quite like Gypsy.”
About his character, “I play the role of Sikander, who’s an aspiring photographer, a part of him that resonates with me because that’s what peaked my interest in the arts, when my father bought me my first camera. He’s a very rugged, outdoorsy kinda guy, very different from Khalil. There’s just this lightness to him. So the show revolves around this guy who’s a bit of a wanderer and his equation with two ladies, a non-traditional love triangle of sorts.”
Penned by Faiza Iftikhar, produced by Momina Duraid and directed by Siraj-ul-Haq, drama serial, Gypsy is expected to go on air on HumTV towards the end of 2016.

Adnan Malik who was loved by all as Khalil in Sadqay Tumhare and seen this year in Dil Banjara is all set to star in the movie cake starring Amina Sheikh and Sanam Saeed as sisters. The film also stars Faris Khalid and Hira hussain. The film is being termed as a family drama focusing on the story of two sisters. Adnan talked to images recently in an interview and had some interesting things to say. Check out!
Images: From an insider’s perspective, tell us why cine-goers should look forward to Cake’s release.
Adnan Malik: Because it’s a heartfelt story, beautifully told, with top-shelf performances. It’s honest, it’s funny and it’s touching. It’s not a film on the surface, but deals with family dynamics and relationships in the same way that I look at them.
I remember when I first read the script I was both laughing and had tears in my eyes. If reading a script can do that to you, if it can move you, and make you reflect on your own life and your own choices, then it’s something powerful.
I don’t act for fame, money or recognition; I do it because I have something to say. Something in the character needs to resonate with me, and Cake has definitely got something for everyone. I don’t think Pakistan has seen a film like this before. It’s hip, current, and will emotionally move you. And my character will totally surprise you.
Images: Is that what moved you to make your big screen debut with an apparently non-commercial; film like Cake?
Adnan: I think Cake is very much commercial. Internationally, look at Kapoor & Sons, it became popular because of its storyline. Cake’s independent in the sense that it doesn’t have a big production house backing it as of yet.
I think we all choose our own paths and at the end of the day, I for one, only want to do projects that allow me to express my worldview, or a worldview that I resonate with. Performance should always work at two levels, what it seems to be and what it actually is.
Images: Tell us a bit about your experience shooting with co-stars, Sanam Saeed and Aamina Sheikh, and director, Asim Abbasi.
Adnan: Sanam and I had just came out of a project together and I feel she’s very professional, always well-prepared. She’s a class act. I’ve known Aamina for very long as well, we hosted a segment together at a recent award show and I directed her in a video called ‘My Punjabi Love for You’. I really like her emotional rawness and I do learn a lot from the both of them.
We all instantly created our own world and I share great chemistry on and off-screen with the both of them. Even Ahmed sahab, Beo aunty, Faris and Hira are all very good. The film has been very intelligently cast. I think Asim’s a very disciplined and organised director. He’s also deeply intuitive. Since he’s also the writer, he was so deeply involved in the film, everything was considered beforehand. He actually worked on ‘untraining’ us from the drama-acting. We spent a couple of months rehearsing and he would never tell us to do things one way or the other. He wanted us to own the characters and make choices from within that discovered space. It was about being present and feeling the moments. It was a real pleasure working with him and learning from him.
Images: What can one expect in terms of execution, considering that Asim and his team are from London?
Adnan: Well Cake had a very young and fresh atmosphere on set with well read and well exposed people and everyone was treated as an equal. The cinematographer is the incredibly talented Mo Azmi, so I trust the team because I know they’re thorough professionals. Cake is by no means a small film, it looks great and despite being directed by a first-timer, I think the film will have a ‘seasoned’ feel.
At the end of the day, I would always watch a movie for its story and performances and this film is strong on both those fronts. I am excited to see myself on the big screen, but what I’m more excited about is what my character stands for. I think the audiences will have a strong and hopefully a positive reaction to him.
Cake is a really cool film that will hopefully appeal to people of all age groups and not only in Pakistan. I feel it’s one of those very few films that will give local cinema a face internationally. It’s real, it’s funny, it’s sad and that’s why it’s called Cake – it has so many layers to it.
Cake marks Adnan Malik’s film debut and is directed by Asim Abbasi. The film will hopefully release this year.

The drama written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and according to the writer this was his original life story. Adnan Malik played the character of Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar in drama. The play gained record breaking success.
Mahira Khan on the other hand is the biggest superstar of the industry, who doesn’t know her. These clicks were captured in Istanbul. Mahira Khan is wearing this beautiful dress designed by Nomi Ansari.
This was quite an engaging episode and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
Adnan Malik agreed with Sarmad about the dearth of well-written and well fleshed-out characters, and revealed that people had been telling him to make an acting debut for quite some time, but he was waiting for the right character. When he was offered the role of Khalil in Sadqe Tumhare, he was sold! He talked highly of Khalil ur Rehman’s dialogue and the sincerity with which he translated his own story on paper. Adnan confessed that Khelu’s character had such an impact on him that it stayed with him long after he was through with the shooting. Adnan Malik is also thinking of writing a film and wants to complete his first draft.

Apart from Pakistan, Hum Tv’s Sadqay Tumhare is also aired every week on HUM TV Europe. In Europe, England has a sizeable population of Pakistani origin apart from other South Asian communities.
The state run radio station of England, British Broadcasting Service also caters to the needs of South Asian communities through its broadcast. One such program is Asian Network Reports which is hosted by Noreen Khan.
The specialty of this week’s program is interview of Adnan Malik who made his television debut from Sadqay Tumhare.
The intersting bit from this interview is, Adnan Malik do not watch contemporary Pakistani dramas before Sadqay Tumhare, not even umsafar. Mahira Khan showed him few scenes of Humsafar which he thought were too cheesy. However he is fan of classic Pakistani dramas like Dhoop Kinaray and Tanhaiyan.
He has not interacted with Khalilur Rehman Qamar during or after the shooting of the drama for which Khalilur Rehman amar scolded Adnan on television while talking over phone in the introductory morning show in which Adnan and Mahira were participating. However as soon first episode was aired, Khailur Rehman Qamar called and said ‘you are khalil‘
Adnan Malik also has few habits similar to the character of Khalil. Adnan is cool minded person not as angry like Khalil but he does get cranky when hungry.

“Are we that vain as a species that while we obsess over the perfect picture, we can’t carry our garbage back and dispose of it properly in a trash bin? To just dump our plastic refuse right there & ruin the experience for others? Don’t we think about the animals & birds that will suffer because of this inorganic, man-made creation that may poison or kill them? Or do we assume that someone will come & clean it up after us? Or that it will naturally decompose?” says Adnan.
Talking about his love with nature he said “I love mama nature & travel around the world to experience her in all her glory. In those travels I’ve realized 2 things about Pakistan. First, that we are blessed with exceptional landscape & wilderness at par with the best in the world and secondly, that our people (especially our youth) are not respectful of this no matter where I go in Pakistan there are plastic wrappers, bottles & bags littered on paths, dumped in bushes or abandoned at picnic sites”.
Furthermore, he mentioned that At Mirajani, when he asked the local caretaker of the trail he grievously told him that most of the trash is left behind by field tripping school & college students. This was unacceptable to him. “Over 50 percent of my followers are between the ages of 13-24. How can it be that the future of my country, most of you reading this, the people who will Inherit this gorgeous land, be so lazy, so heartless, so selfish as to dump trash in future?”, he added.
Lastly Adnan requested people that this planet is the only one we have & if we want it to remain beautiful, sustainable for other species to co-exist and YES, For more epic Instagram photos in dramatic natural landscapes that aren’t filthy Please clean up after yourselves.
There have been quite many news on tvc coming out recently. And this time it is Adnan Malik teaming up with Rameez Raja. The former cricketer is soon going to be seen in an upcoming tvc directed by Adnan Malik. Adnan’s talent as a director is nothing infamous and he is currently seen in drama Dil Banjara. Adnan had previously shared a small clip of legend Rameez Raja on Instagram with the caption of collaborating with the childhood mentor.
HIP then got in touch with Adnan to know more about the venture.
”It was so much fun working with Rameez,” Adnan Malik told HIP. “He is someone whom I have watched play as a cricketer and heard as a commentator. When I was growing up I played some under 19 cricket in Islamabad and I too wanted to be a cricketer so working with Raja was a big deal for me. Before the shoot began, I was so excited that I first went to Lahore and worked on his wardrobe, and then worked on reinventing his look in Karachi.”
Directing someone as famous as Raja was a lot of fun according to Adnan. “I wanted to bring his suave yet cheeky style into the performance, so I would use cricketing terms and moments from his own career while directing him! Like there was this one time he was run out on 99 in a match against England. So I would say, “roll camera! Rameez on 99 scampering for the single aaaaanddd.. Action!” I wanted to catch him off guard and make his performance more spontaneous,” said Adnan.
“He is such a mans man, you feel like you are part of an old boys club when you meet him,” shared Malik. “He knows cricket better than anyone else so it was great just talking to him. And he loves wordplay and so do I, so we were just talking all the time!”
“He’s also very patient. And also can talk for hours without a break. Plus for someone in his mid 50’s he’s super fit and runs an hour every day!”
Coming back to the ad, the director told HIP that it was a simple but fun ad, inspired by set ups in films which he had seen by Spike Jonze and Michele Gondry.
Zindagi kitni haseen hy’s girl Sajal Ali is now doing a Tvc with rising star Adnan Malik. Sajal Ali is known for her serious & emotional characters. Tvc is directed by Malik as well. Tvc is now too far to be on aired, but it seems like an excellent collaboration.
‘I really enjoyed working with Sajjal’ stated Adnan. Whereas Sajjal talked bout Adnan in the way that he’s a caring director. They left us with the hint that it can be a tea brand or something like that. End it up on an optimistic note that viewers will adore this first time collaboration! We really hope the commercial manages to deliver socially charged duration!
