Izteraab – Episode 14!

I think it’s about time that the viewers are set free from this izteraab ASAP. They’ve pretty much done everything they could & have told us everything related to this dysfunctional family, so yes, we totally understand how things are going to roll, so it would be better if the camera rolled quickly & the drama ends because there’s no point in stretching the play.

It was good to see Jazib in this episode, just as a reminder that it’s his family who’s going through all this. I just didn’t really get how they made the surroundings of a potentially dead person so easy going like people especially Jazib doesn’t seem really bothered about Zara. Dua is just focusing more on serving juices to Zara & Zara’s main focus is on making Dua’s life hell till she lasts. Sorry to say but if we look at the bigger picture, it’s about time that we should be feeling sympathy for Zara’s character but sadly her scenes are nothing but a pain to watch.

Once again, I am kind of questioning the approach of the script because seems like Sofia was the lead actress & every actor around her was playing a supporting role because this kid has gotten a lot more coverage than required. They pretty much showed that Dua has won the kids over so there was no need to convince us with some more drama related to the questionable choices made by Sofia. Dua helped her & Sofia has become a fan. Not that it was necessary but if they showed how Dua helped Sofia, then they should’ve stopped right there. I just don’t get that a woman who is dying & is pretty much aware of it is not doing anything to subside her anger & agitation. Very conveniently Zara blames Dua for all the wrong things that have happened in her life & to her kids, so I think considering the few days Zara’s left with, she must reflect on the choices she made through out her life rather than just bursting out in anger every single time at Dua for the things she ain’t even responsible for.

It’s a high time that Zara should in literal sense start picking up the pieces & do what she can to spend some time with her family but all that we see her doing is spending some time with her friend & then watching some TV programs. She’s lethargic, we get it but from where does she get all the energy to shout at Dua? Zara already knew that Sofia got involved in something big so why didn’t she take hold of the situation straight away? Now when Dua seems to have tackled the issue perfectly, Zara still has found another reason to bring her down.

I feel the drama should end because it’s like they’re just beating around the bush without coming to a proper ending. Going by the preview, Dua still has some wits & time left to make Zara happy which she clearly can not, so in stead of trying to show that Dua made some efforts, they should wrap the story nicely by showing the efforts made by Zara to help Dua bond well with her kids as she’s going to live with them from now on rather than becoming a seemingly painful liability on them till her last breath. Turkish artist as brand ambassador for a clothing brand

Indian content and celebrities are seen in abundance on our screens from past one decade since the beginning of age of private satellite channels. The other country which successfully challenged and replaced the Indian content (to some extent) is undoubtedly Turkey. Turkish dramas were welcomed whole heartedly and now all the media houses play Turkish dramas. The pioneer in this trend is Urdu One, which aired the super hit drama Ishqe Mamnu paving the way for others too. In compariosn Turkish drama are of superior production quality and story wise much better than then the crap and senseless Indian drama.

After dramas, turkish fashion is also impacting our fashion scene, where few Turkish fashion brands have already opened outlets in Karachi. The success of turkish dramas has also introduced new faces of turkish celebrities to television audience. Many Pakistanis active on social media are following the official facebook pages of Turkish celebrities. This popularity also compelled a textile brand to cast a turkish celebrity as its brand ambassador. Popularity wise Baren Saat (Ishqe Mamnu, Fatima Gul) and Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ (Ishqe Mamnu, Manahil aur Khalil, Noor, Kuzey Guney) perhaps tops the list of the famous turkish celebrities among Pakistani viewers. Apart from Pakistan, turkish celebrities are also widely followed in whole middle east, north africa and balkans region.

Beren Saat
As per TRT (state run broadcasting corporation of turkey) Baren Saat has received a heavy endorsement offer from Firdose Textiles to work as brand ambassador. The total worth of this deal is 1.5   million (15 laakh) US dollars. Baren Saat has to work as brand ambassador for the product range of 2015. The endorsement deal covers Pakistan as well as whole middle east region as Firdose Textile has plans to expand its business to lucrative market of Middle East. Middle East especially Arabian peninsular countries are known for their demand of luxurious items. Firdose Textiles has already opened its shops in Dubai for this purpose. As per TRT Firdose Textiles has sent the endorsement offer through their Administrator-Manufacturing named Asad Shoaib. Firdose Textiles had also signed Indian celebrities in recent years as brand ambassadors at huge amounts citing their massive following among Pakistani public. However the endorsement amount for Baren Saat is much higher as compared to Indian celebrities.
Ironically, it is not the first occasion to cast a turkish celebrity in Pakistan for a brand. During 1980’s a Turkish artist Naazan Sanchi had already appeared in commercial of Lux.

Updates on Athar Shah Khan aka Jaidi

Athar Shah Khan commonly known as Jaidi has entertained television audience for decades both as artist, poet and writer. He played the famous character of Jaidi on PTV and NTM which was popular in both elders and youngers.

Athar Shah Khan is absent from scene for quite a while. In one recent telephonic conversation with Urdu Daily Naibaat, Athar Shah provided reason for this distance from small screen.

As per Athar Shah Khan, he is fine but prefers rest at home and seldom visits outside due to old age. He was slightly injured last year but is fine now. Due to growing age, he is also unable to continue writing new poetry or serial. He created the character of Jaidi, and he never felt bad whenever called by the name Jaidi. Due to growing age he seldom participates in any gathering or mushairai

Athar Shah Khan has provided many famous dramas through out 70’s,80’s and 90’s including Intezar Farmaiay, Lakhon mein teen, Ba adab ba mulahiza hoshiyar, haye jaidi and others.

Praying for healthy life for Athar Shah Khan, here is the full content.

Zara Sheikh to make a comeback in singing

Anyone remember Zara Sheikh perhaps the last famous heroine introduced in Urdu films made in Lahore film industry. Zara had a dream start to her career from superhit film Tere Pyar Mein (2000). Zara second film was Chalo Ishq Larain (CIL 2002), in which her voice is used for playback singing. CIL flopped badly at box office and so does Zara’s career as a singer. After CIL, Zara appeared in films of big banner and budget like Laaj(2003), Salakhain(2004), Pehla Pehla Pyar(2006) till Urdu film making at Lahore halted totally. Unlike other film artists, Zara has constantly declined all offers to work on television or stage and is therefore absent from the scene. Her latest flick is a british indian film named Honor Killing (2014) which is released in India earlier this year.

After a long break Zara is planning to make a comeback, but not in acting its music where she is planning to release an album after Eid. Lets see how Zara performs in this second innings of her music career

Mahnoor Baloch declined the offer of Punjabi film

Mahnoor Baloch has started her acting career from drama Maarvi in 1992-93 and has been ever famous since then. Mahnoor has always refused multiple offers to work in Pakistani films until her first film Mein Hoon Shahid Afridi in 2013.

After MHSA, Mahnoor has stated she is ready to work in further Pakistani films. As per a press report she has recently declined the offer of producer Arshad Gujjara punjabi film saying the role is not what she wants to do in films.

Punjabi cinema has been the biggest and most successful circuit of Pakistani as Punjabi is the largest spoken language of our country. Punjabi films were considered a safe investment as compared to Urdu films and they normally recover their cost and risk factor as compared to Urdu films is low.

On a personal note its a wise choice by Mahnoor Baloch, because in a routine Punjabi film there is not much room for heroine instead of few senseless songs shot in fields destroying crops  and climbing trees.

Pyarai Afzal – Journey So Far…

0

Kahan se shuru huai thai or kahan pohanch gayai.. This is what that comes in my mind whenever I think of this show now. I feel extremely sorry for all fans of Pyarai Afzal, including me, because this show started with a great note and look where we are standing now. First of all, having male protagonist and then Khalil Saheb’s powerful dialogues made this show most anticipated one. Episode after episode, we kept on falling in love with this show but after 20 episodes, this show started losing its charm.

I have no clue why are they doing this to the brilliantly written script; I mean this extension is totally uncalled for. We wowed to see Afzal happy  ,we got sad when Afzal cried but now, nothing comes in my mind that can help me to connect to the characters.

I agree with the fact that dialogues were the reason for which this show got famous and loved by all. But repetition of same dialogues and same situations adds nothing but gives you a feeling as if you are watching the same incident again and again.

Afzal rejected Yasmeen when Yasmeen confronted him and spoke her heart out. Afzal loved Farah throughout his life and now that he knows that he is not capable of getting married to her so there was no chance of him getting married to someone else too.

Afzal parents are still longing for him and he misses them equally. His sister, Arfa – who was once closest to him, cries for him day and night and prays for him. Rukayya knew that Afzal liked Farah and for that whenever Farah visits her, she feels as if her own son is sitting in front of her.

Lubna’s so called love is of no use till now because Farah has seriously become a “dheet haddi” ; I mean hadh ho gaye ab tou, she is ready to be engaged to that psychiatrist but has no guts to tell Afzal about her feelings for him. On the other side, Afzal bhi dhun ka pakka ho gaya hai, that slap of rejection somehow made him egoistic and now he wants to get engaged too – after knowing that Farah is getting engaged.

After rejecting her, Afzal asked Yasmeen ;  I mean seriously , was it that much easier for him ? He proposed her just like that and thankfully ,she rejected her because she knew that he loves Farah and both of them will never live a happy life because when it comes to Afzal, Farah’s love overpowers Yasmeen’s affection.

But wait.. Yasmeen kahan reh sakti thei peechay.. She called Afzal and told him that she is ready for engagement but with a condition that he has to marry him and will never leave her half-way. Afzal is now unable to stand Farah’s association with someone other than him and inreturn,he is putting his own life at stake ; Taking decision of getting married to someone whom you never loved isnot clever act indeed or woh bhi badlay ke aag mai..

Thats all what I extracted from past few episodes. Still, I can’t smell this show heading towards its ending. Are you ?

Do share your thoughts about your journey with Pyarai Afzal so far.

Rabia Basharat.

P.S. I was busy with personal stuff , you will get to read regular reviews from now on.

Indian Actress Sara Khan Will Be Seen In Eid Special Telefilm

1st Wife vs. The 2nd Wife – The Latest Obsession Of Our Drama Writers

0

Love triangles and stories based of broken love have always been a favorite with our modern drama writers. Marital life and its never-ending issues and the saas bahu rivalry was our writers favorite topic for a very long time and therefore the focus of Pakistani drama serials for years.

When Maat went on air the writers took a little more inspiration from it than the viewers would have wanted them to and sisters rivalry became the core topic of many dramas. The trend changed with Yahan Pyar Nahi Hai; to the best of my knowledge that was the first drama of recent times in which the sisters’ (cousins) rivalry was taken to another level on our drama screens when Junaid Khan’s character decided to enter into a nikkah with Mawra’s character. In Dil-e-Muztar Adeel married Zoya after Silla walked out of his life. In both these instances the second wife was wicked and the first wife was shown as a better person to whom the hero will finally return.

After few such dramas which probably clicked with the viewers as well for some odd reason we saw a new twist in this story of the two wives; the writers decided that they were being unfair with the second wife by portraying her as a lesser human who the leading man always left in the end. As far as I can recall the trend of showing the second wife in a certain light started with the play Bari Apa. It was followed by Hamnasheen, Shukk, Ranjish Hi Sahi and currently Aahista Aahista.

Here are the “characteristics” of the second wife which are quickly becoming a norm in our dramas:

1. She is always younger, prettier and more docile than the first wife – Ayesha Khan in Bari Apa, Arij Fatyma in Hamnasheen, Mawra Hocane in Aahista Aahista, Yumna in Ranjish Hi Sahi (not younger but prettier and more docile) and Sanam Saeed in Shukk (maybe not prettier but definitely more docile!). I have seen promos of many shows on Geo Kahani and Geo as well in which the story seems to be pretty much the same, I can’t comment on the shows because I am not watching them on regular basis.

2. The writers go out of their way to make the second wife look like a bechari – In all these dramas the second wife was wronged in some way or the other. In Bari Apa Zubeida treated Neelam like a door-mat and therefore the viewers were supposed to feel for and side with her character. In drama serial Hamnasheen Ismat Ara married her husband with her own free will but she never let the new wife breathe in her own house and therefore the poor soul was seen crying all the time, In Aahista Aahista Sofia is already being unreasonable without even knowing the truth and Haya feels abandoned -yes forced becharapan all the way!

Do I even need to talk about the way Sehrish changed after she moved in with Shaam and his new wife? The way Sanya was portrayed as a bechari was beyond me but our writers somehow consider it their moral duty to speak for the cause of second wives!

wives

3. The second wife will win the husband in the end because she is better than the first one – Since this is a competition so the good guy will always win. Like I said gone are the days when the husbands wronged their wives when they went behind their back and married someone else.

Even the husband is not remotely attracted to the second wife to begin with as was the case in Hamnasheen and now Aahista Aahista but he will eventually end up falling in love with the finely crafted piece of art because the first wife quickly loses her charm when he finds a younger, prettier and more docile version of her! Sometimes men marry these women out of hamdardi like in Bari Apa and Shukk but gradually the hamdardi turns into love.

It isn’t just the second wife who has certain characteristics but the first wives in all these drama were pretty much the same too. Here is how our writers like to portray the first wife:

1.She is opinionated and confident – Zubeida in Bari Apa, Sehrish in Shukk, Bilquees in Ranjish Hi Sahi and Ismat Ara in Hamnasheen. Husbands of all these characters (except in RHS, which in my opinion is an exception here) were madly in love with their opinionated and confident wives before they met the docile and obedient second wives. These characteristics work against the first wives but only after their husbands find a second one!

There are times when I feel that the writers are trying to show that a man is always happy with a woman who is submissive, which is actually very sad. When the first wives were winning this race at that time they were portrayed as docile and now when the second wives have turned docile, they are winning the husband!

2. She will be made the villain when she resorts to cheap tactics to win her husband back!  The second wife has taken the role which the saas was “allotted” at one time in our dramas! I hate the way women are being belittled in our dramas nowadays. The first wife will stoop lower than low to win her husband back and even then she won’t make a place in his heart but will only lose that precious little place she once had because of her conniving ways!

I understand the rage and hurt that a wife must feel when her husband goes behind her back and marries someone else and what is even worse is that these two women have to live under the same roof. Why doesn’t the first wife walk out of such  a relationship? The answer is simple – our writers won’t have a story if they do!

wives1

Even writing all this down makes me feel sick; marriage is a very sacred institution but our writers are making a mockery of it by portraying it in this way. Every couple has problems, most normal people talk about these problems and sort them out. If every man starts looking for a second wife only because there are some temporary problems in the marriage then we will have a very dysfunctional society and family system. Wives are not objects which can replaced by a new one and portraying them like that is sickening.

The stories based on instances where men marry another woman out of pressure are wrong on so many levels too. If you already have a first wife, you should have the guts to tell the world that you are already married. Our heroes pretend there is nothing wrong with opting for a second marriage to “fix” the problem temporarily!

Feel free to share your thoughts please. How do you feel about this forced competition between the first and the second wife?

Ramazan Special Dramas,Oh No Please!

0

There was a time when Ramazan was considered a purely religious month.Entertainment factor was not associated with it.However, with the advent of Private Television Channels in Pakistan special dramas used to be aired during the whole month of Ramazan – half hour format with one episode per day.Sometimes these Ramazan special dramas continue till the third day of Eid.

There are numerous such special Ramazan plays including Faiz Manzil ke Rozedar,Chand pe dastak,Chaudween Ka Chand,Dil to kacha hai jee,Roza Ke Rozay,Larka Karachi Ka Kuri Lahore Di,Yeh Shadi Naheen Ho Sakti,Band Bajay Ga and the most famous and popular one Kis Din Mera Viyah Hovay Ga.

There is nothing wrong in showing Ramazan special dramas.Infact,it’s a good trend but if you closely monitor the content of these dramas you would find two very startling things.Firstly, all of these dramas would be full of forced humour, mindless over the top romances between various couples (elderly couples included) and on top of it these would be full of songs and dances.Secondly, either Ramazan won’t be mentioned at all in the plays or if it’s mentioned a mockery would be made of it like people finding it very hard to fast, skipping fasts or showing as if it’s the most difficult thing in the world to fast.

Bulbulay Ramazan special episodes are also a case in point where fasting, preparing Sehri/Iftari is shown in a very negative light. These episodes are very crude depictions of our routines during Ramazan.

Does the spirit of this month go along with over the top forced humour, mindless romances between everyone regardless of age and songs and dances?I think not.We need to be given a break from such mindless entertainment which is against the spirit of this month. Why can’t we be shown serious Ramazan based dramas or subtle comedy? Who’s made this decision of making such plays again and again?

Do share your views about over the top forced comic and cheap romantic Ramazan special plays and plays making mockery of the month and the concept of fasting.

MasterChef Pakistan Week 09 – Elimination Round!

0

It was a very interesting episode that showcased some MasterChef quality food. I personally enjoyed watching the episode because everyone was pushed to attempt something new & even the elimination was justified.

The contestants had to cook pasta & they had to randomly pick second core ingredient that they had to gel in their dish to compliment the pasta of their choice. I must say I am amazed to see the performances of some of the contestants & even the presentations this time were great. Everyone came up with some brilliant ideas & I am glad that the contestants are showing their talent to the best of their ability.

Maryam got Pear as a second core ingredient so she created ‘Chocolate Pasta w/ Poached Pear & Pineapple Sauce’. Chef Khurram liked the presentation but felt that the pasta was too hard & wasn’t good at all. Chef Zakir pointed out that the pear was raw in the middle & was overcooked on the surface.

Rayyan got to work with Lobster so he came up with ‘Lobster Tortellini’. Chef Mehboob dreaded that the lobster tail tends to remain undercooked & the same thing happened with Rayyan’s dish but other than that the filling that he prepared & the pasta was perfect according to Chef Mehboob. Chef Khurram remarked his dish as excellent but felt that the portion wasn’t the right size. Chef Zakir also liked the pasta.

Khurram got Mango as a complimenting ingredient so he created ‘Stir Fried Mango & Vegetable Noodles’. Chef Mehboob loved the dish & commented him for giving out the best dish once again because it was perfect in flavor. Chef Khurram felt that he justified the rules because the balance of flavours was amazing with some sweetness to something zesty & spicy, the dish worked really well. Chef Zakir was amazed that Khurram made such pasta which was as good as a packeted one. He was totally impressed.

Gulnaz had to work with Blue Cheese so she came up with ‘Fettuccine Pasta w/ Chicken & Blue Cheese Sauce’. Chef Mehboob liked the pasta but felt that the whole dish needed a bit more creamier sauce. Chef Khurram found the presentation weak & the sauce too thick plus he also commented that the blue cheese wasn’t as evident in her dish as it should’ve been.

Amna got Broccoli so she came up with ‘Broccoli & Lobster Cannelloni w/ White Sauce’. Chef Mehboob didn’t like the presentation. He found the pasta overcooked because it was too thin & felt that the lobster was too dominant in the dish. Chef Khurram felt that the broccoli was flat & so was the sauce. He felt that the taste of lobster was overpowering. Chef Zakir was disappointed seeing such a dish by one of a top 10 contestant.

Zain selected Egg Plant so he created ‘Egg Plant Stuffed Cannelloni w/ Marinara Sauce’. Chef Mehboob commented that the presentation was best so far & also the pasta was cooked perfectly. Chef Khurram commended him for such a plating & felt that he did an amazing job.

Iqra got Pom-fret so she presented ‘Seafood Lasagne’. Chef Mehboob didn’t like the presentation & found the pasta too thin & overcooked. He felt that the pom-fret was lost because other seafood flavours overpowered the whole dish. Chef Khurram didn’t appreciate the way she plated up the dish & he was disappointed to see someone so good at pasta presenting such a weak dish where the sauce & the fish had no great flavours. Chef Zakir commented that too many things cannot bring out the best taste.

Madiha got Tofu so she came up with ‘Tofu Alfredo Roulade’. Chef Mehboob found the pasta as overcooked & felt that the sauce had no salt in it. He also suggested that Madiha should’ve cooked the tofu a little to bring out some texture in it. Chef Khurram felt that the main ingredient & the second ingredient both were flat. Chef Zakir renamed her dish as less salty pasta served with cherry tomatoes.

Ammarah got Minced Mutton to work with so she made ‘Tex Mex Mutton Pappardelle’. Chef Mehboob loved the presentation & the rest of the dish. He felt that the size of the pasta was perfect & so was the thickness. Chef Khurram liked the presentation as well & liked the flavours of the sauce & the pasta. Chef Zakir commented that the dish had perfect Mexican flavours & he ate such a perfect pasta after a long long time.

It was now time for the announcement of top 3 & bottom 3 dishes. Ammarah, Khurram & Zain were selected in the top 3 & Khurram well-deservingly won the challenge. Maryam, Madiha & Iqra fell in the bottom 3 & Iqra was eliminated.

I must say I was wowed by the presentation of Zain & Ammarah’s dishes. They looked picture perfect & as rightly pointed out by Chef Khurram, they looked appetizing. I am actually really glad that Khurram won this time because he deserved it based on his consistent performance. Chefs commented themselves that he has been in the top 3 for 3 times so it was his day. Ammarah is proving to be a very very strong contender as the variety of her food is amazing. Zain is redeeming himself as well. Saad’s dish was ignored so not sure if his performance was good or bad in this round. I was excited to see how Maryam’s dish would turn out because Chocolate Pasta sounded amazing but sadly she missed the mark but no doubt she presented the dish well & the idea was great too.

Madiha obviously presented a weak dish but I think she is spaced out. Even though she didn’t mention it too openly but it was pretty evident that the other contestants are giving her a hard time which I don’t really get why because I have never seen her comment negatively against anyone or regarding any situation, she is just as much of a contestant as others are so the contestants shouldn’t indulge themselves into petty politics & shouldn’t corner her. Iqra commented too casually that Madiha should pack her bags & leave whereas she herself was leaving, lol.

I feel that the judges took the right decision because Iqra wasn’t performing well at all & going by how she was labeled as a pasta master, the performance was quite disappointing. I feel that Iqra had some sort of an attitude problem or something because what Maryam did was just a genuine gesture but the way she reacted was OTT. Amna’s comment on the situation was once again uncalled for because if Maryam had walked away, she as well as others might’ve judged Maryam for being too inconsiderate (as they said about Saad’s gesture last week) but just because she showed some concern, it doesn’t mean it was in a bad sense & she was ghussofying in anything. Amna needs to relax & work on her dishes rather than commenting too casually on what others are doing because she is coming across as negative as well. Share what you felt about this episode & yes needless to say but still ‘no spoiler alerts please’. :)

Cheers,

Marasim – Episode 14!

0

Ohho, things have taken a worst turn possible for now. Don’t know why but I feel the characters have been flipped to fit the current situation which isn’t appeasing to see at all.

Just because Abdullah & Deeba got married, Daood now finds it hard to keep up with the responsibility/marriage he is associated with. Seeing Momenah around him has hit the nail in the coffin but Daood being himself is persistent that he can turn things in his favour because he has suffered a lot. I must say the character who was potentially becoming everyone’s favourite has now been ruined. The 180 degree flip of Daood’s character was the last thing anyone wanted to see because he is the same person who stood up for what was right & never once allowed anything wrong to happen to Nayab but seems like he got tired of compressing his feelings therefore he got irrational.

The way they’ve tried to show Momenah’s petty issues with Fahad isn’t convincing enough. It was obvious that she was unhappy emotionally but just because her husband refuses to speak to her in his office hours doesn’t mean she’s got the right to leave him & elope with her ex-fiancé. Lately, this non-issue is being addressed in the dramas a lot that the wives remain unhappy for the fact that their husbands are paying complete attention to their jobs. If only Momenah would’ve understood that her trip to Pakistan was sponsored by her workaholic husband, then she wouldn’t have even thought of giving Daood an edge at all because Fahad is working to keep his family afloat & give Momenah all the luxuries that she can think of, so, what’s wrong if he is focused on his career? One can’t have it all & Momenah should be honest that she is unhappy because Fahad is not Daood but she can’t say she’s unhappy because Fahad isn’t giving her the attention.

Even though Momenah resisted but then once again she failed in making Daood understand the intricacy of the situation. She saw that Daood was treating a marriage like a toddler’s game but Momenah on her own lost rationality & instead of speaking to him with finality; she gave him a ray of hope which could result in Nayab & Daood’s divorce. According to Momenah, she thought she would make a point by mentioning Daood’s kid but whatever she said was more like an advise instead of a warning, it was more like a challenge which she knew Daood would accomplish. It showed that to some extent she also wished that Daood would leave Nayab so that Momenah could settle down with him.

All of a sudden they’ve started to show that Nayab has feelings for Daood & she is trying to save her marriage but then once again, she never really made an effort before. If Daood never allowed her to win him over, she never herself tried in the first place too but just now she could sense Daood’s disinterest in her kid, she thought it would be better to give this marriage a little push but then she has been wrong in calculation & it’s too late now. Daood definitely is wrong as he never endeared Nayab but then it was a vice versa scenario all this while too.

At first I thought Gaitiara would understand Nayab & would stand by her but she took me by surprise by showing she was no less an evil herself because now when her evil daughter is settled & happy, she is allowing Daood to not only get married to Momenah but she was suggesting how it was possible. Gaitiara is obviously quite cunning because now when Deeba’s married, she can’t afford to lose Daood & just because she wants to control & hold onto her stooge (Daood) she has confessed of her insecurities, hah. One can’t expect compassion from Gaitiara but the transition of everyone else’s character is making things a bit indigestible. As always the acting & the direction was phenomenal & I am sure the drama isn’t just over yet & for that I am hopeful. Let’s see what happens.

Aahista Aahista – Episode 05!

0

You know what’s the best thing about watching a drama online? Yes, you can forward it as much as you want to. An episode that was meant to be technically 38 minutes long had nothing but 20 minutes of crying & useless close ups.

While watching this drama I was reminded of the character of Aunn from Aunn Zara, who was ankhon ka tara & ladla of the family to the point where the ladies of house were fixated to him just because he was the only son, only grandson, only nephew but then his character had so much to offer, so many shades to it that everything related to him fell into its place perfectly but then here we are watching how every single lady starting from Bee Jaan, to Shireen Apa, to Sofia, to Haya & to some extent Safeer bhai (a gentleman of course) are fixated to Zawaar…yes, Zawaar? What is his character by the way I mean what has he offered so far except a tired face & a bunch of lies? Why in the world is everyone so obsessed with him?

As usual Zawaar at first felt bad for leaving Haya behind but then he blamed her for not informing him so he was like ‘jaow mai nai bolta tum shay, mai katti hoon’. Finally, after a good night’s sleep his conscience woke up too & he was seen explaining things to Haya but just one dialogue gave me a reason to despise him more & that was ‘wapis jana hai to chali jao but soch lo Bee Jaan ka kya hoga’. Why in the world does he expect everyone else to pay the price on his behalf that too just because they’re in some way related to him? IF he was a man enough – IF; he would’ve handled things properly without getting into such a mess where no one else had to fend for his mistakes. Now just because Haya is supposed to take care of HIS Honey Bee, she can’t open her mouth.

Surprise Surprise, this actually came as a surprise to me that Sofia has a job too. Finally, she isn’t as unproductive as she seems but still she is someone who celebrates 1st meeting anniversary, 1st phone call anniversary, 1st letter anniversary, 1st smile anniversary, 1st fight aniversary etc etc etc etc 1st etc etc etc. Yes, she is actually quite very faarigh even after she has a job. Sofia claims to have fallen in love with him in the very first meeting but I couldn’t really get that because she also claimed to be very practical, so I am wondering how did she fall for such a guy who was so tired that he could barely keep his eyes open? As far as I know yawning is contagious so wasn’t Sofia yawning by being in a company of such a sleepy fellow? While watching all their scenes together I was wondering which wife especially someone like Sofia who is in an awe of her Zoey speaks so painfully formally to her husband? & they say it’s LOVE, what a joke.

Not only Sofia is clingy but she is so thick headed that just when Zawaar announced the name of the uninvited guest Haya, she couldn’t connect the dots & figure it out that Haya was no one else but Zawaar’s cousin? She has been married to Zawaar for ages & she has always spoken to him about his family so how’s it possible that she never once saw a family picture of Zawaar, just to know how his family’s like? Very easily, tiredly & sleepily Zawaar spun one lie after the other in front of Sofia, why? Because like I said the guy has a chicken’s spine. He thinks, he actually thinks he can fool his wife who is so suffocating to be around? Will have to find out how the chicken’s cut into pieces by the two butchers I mean two wives. But yes, nothing, absolutely nothing about any of the characters is interesting.

Dilip Kumar sent a special copy of autobiography for Pakistani Prime Minister

Like majority of Pakistani public, most of our rulers and leaders also passionately follows indian artists. Former dictator, Ziaul Haq, Parvez Musharaf and prime ministers Shaukat Aziz and now Nawaz Sharif are one who have admired indian artists on their visits to India. Even former dictator ziaul Haq has family terms with an Indian artist. Similarly on his visit to India, Parvez Musharraf specially expressed the wish to invite an indian artist on offical lunch.

Current prime minister Nawaz Sharif has visited India last month where he also met indian artist Shabana Azmi in a gathering. Nawaz Sharif also wanted to visit famous artist of sub-continent Dilip Kumar but unable to do so though he sent a bouquet  for Dilip Kumar. Nawaz Sharif had awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (the highest civil award of Pakistan) to Dilip Kumar in 1999 when he was the Prime minister.

Now Dilip Kumar has released his auto biography and sent a special copy to our Prime minister Nawaz Sharif, which is a sign of strong bonding and warm relations between these two.

Nadamat an iranian drama on TV One Global

This Ramazan, after ATV, TV One is also coming up with an Iranian drama named Nadamat. It will be aired in late hours at 10:30 pm daily. TV One is advertising it as the first ever regular Iranian drama to be aired on a Pakistani channel online casino which is not correct. Last year ATV a terrestrial/satellite channel has aired the same drama with its original name of Roz-e-Hasrat which we also reported on this forum last year.

The actual name of this Irani drama is Roz-e-Hasrat, which TV One Global is airing with the name of Nadamat. It is also dubbed in Urdu by Iranian broadcaster themselve for their satellite Urdu channel named Sahar TV.

ATV’s Ramazan Transmission

Based in Lahore ATV is the only private terrestrial channel in Pakistan which is also available on satellite. Unlike its  sister channel A-Plus it is not much popular over satellite. Terrestrial channels are viewed by a large portion of population in remote  and rural areas which are not represented in television ratings and other statistics. The channel has some quality programs to its name including Morning with Farah a morning show of its own kind.

Like every year ATV has also arranged for special Ramazan transmission to be hosted by Usmain Duraiz. Unlike other channels its transmission consists of variety of recorded programs of religious nature, instead of a three four hour long transmission on a same location (means some colorful set) like a game show.

MasterChef Pakistan Week 09 – Immunity Challenge!

0

Ohkay, so as much as I was looking forward to this episode I feel that the layout of every single episode is becoming very monotonous with the factor of excitement subsiding especially. It’s getting pretty obvious that the beginning 10 minutes of the episode will be dedicated to the judges, next 30 will be allotted to the haphazard cooking followed by the judges’ patrol asking the MasterChef Pakistan’s signature question ‘kya bana rahay/rahi hain’ & the remaining minutes will showcase the tastings & the final result. I think if they’d focus more on showing the techniques, they’d be able to make the episodes a lot more engaging. Like in this episode, everyone put up some great dishes which involved the hardcore desi techniques that have been the essence of our local cuisine since ages but sadly, the execution team couldn’t do justice to anything in particular. As much as the task was interesting, I feel the episode lacked the wow factor.

The task that was assigned to the contestants was to prepare food that represented Pakistan’s provinces. Everyone got the cuisine randomly & with the immunity pin up for grabs for the first time in the competition, everyone worked really hard. Zain had won himself an advantage in the last round so he had to use it this time by picking any cuisine that he liked & exchange it with someone he thought of as a threat. Zain got Balochistan & he replaced it with Punjab & exchanged it with Maryam. The dishes were great & I feel that all the contestants performed brilliantly by showing some amazing techniques. Madiha, Khurram & Zain got Punjab. Maryam & Ammarah got Balochistan. Amna & Gulnaz had to represent Khyber Pukhtunkhwa through their cooking & Rayyan, Iqra, Saad got Sindh.

Khurram served ‘Palak Gosht w/ Naan & Lassi’. Chef Mehboob liked his dish a lot & felt that the meat had a very good flavour. He felt that Lassi had a ratio of milk more but other than that his main dish was perfect. Chef Khurram liked the presentation along with the flavours but also wanted him to add more colors while plating the dish. Chef Zakir felt that the meat was tender, succulent & flavoursome so for that he appreciated Khurram a lot.

Rayyan made ‘Katakat & Daal’. Chef Mehboob felt that the whole dish was sour & the daal had a lot of soya sauce in it. Chef Khurram didn’t quite get the taste of daal. Chef Zakir didn’t like the roti that Rayyan cooked either.

Gulnaz presented ‘Ghata Roojee, Chapli Kabab & Rumali Roti’. Chef Zakir liked the kababs a lot. Chef Mehboob thoroughly enjoyed her whole dish specifically for the balanced flavours. Chef Khurram enjoyed both the components of her dish too.

Amna came up with ‘Channa Mewa, Chapli Kabab & Qehwa’. Chef Mehboob liked the taste of qehwa & he also enjoyed the flavours of channa mewa but he did feel that cabab didn’t have a balanced flavor. Chef Khurram commented that he could feel the essence of Pukhtun flavours in Amna’s dish. Chef Zakir liked the main dish but felt that raita had no salt in it (!?!?!?!).

Maryam served ‘Namkeen Gosht, Channa Daal, Bhindi w/ Roti. Chef Mehboob liked the dish a lot but he felt that the daal was over cooked but other than that her main dish which was namkeen gosht was cooked to perfection. Chef Zakir praised her for improving herself over the weeks & he liked namkeen gosht but felt that daal has no flavour to it. Chef Khurram commented that his mother used to make similar bhindi & liked her dish over all.

Iqra presented ‘Sindhi Biryani & Thadli’. Chef Mehboob found that the chicken was raw so he didn’t taste it but felt that the rice had a great flavour. Chef Khurram told her off for not taking care of the protein that too at this stage of the competition. Chef Zakir felt that she put in a lot of effort on her side drink but if she had paid more attention to her biryani then she could’ve come up with a dish of the day.

Zain presented ‘Murgh Channa, Daal w/ Roti. Chef Mehboob felt that he made a mistake by switching the province as he didn’t perform well because the daal had no flavour & rice had no salt in them. Chef Khurram liked the presentation but he felt that he was eating karahi masala. Chef Zakir felt that he came up with channa chat because murgh channa is supposedly made with the chicken stock so for this his main dish was weak.

Ammarah came up with ‘Balochi Gosht & Roti’. Chef Mehboob felt that the meat didn’t have a right balochi flavour because of the usage of ginger in particular; he was kind of disappointed & commented that he didn’t find what he was looking for. Chef Khurram felt that it was more like a whole different dish & wasn’t what she claimed she presented.

Madiha made ‘Saagh, Makai Roti & Lassi’. Chef Mehboob found the roti was too dense & dry plus saagh was more on a sweeter side. Chef Khurram liked the lassi & the technique of it, he also liked the texture of saagh but the flavour was too sweet for his taste too. Chef Zakir wasn’t satisfied with the roti specifically as well.

Saad came up with ‘Sindhi Biryani & Suji Ka Halwa’. Chef Mehboob didn’t find the biryani spicy enough but liked the halwa. Chef Khurram liked the plating but felt that the chicken was undercooked & the rice overcooked. Chef Zakir felt that he tried to do the things right but the result wasn’t upto his expectations.

The judges for the first time selected top 4 dishes instead of top 3 as they were impressed by 4 dishes that they tasted. Judges appreciated the efforts of the contestants a lot & felt that everyone tried to instil the essence of the local food to the best of their ability. Maryam, Gulnaz, Amna & Khurram were in the top 4 & surprise surprise, Gulnaz won the immunity pin which she can use anytime she wants to back out of any specific challenge.

I feel that the contestants tried to use a lot of different techniques but none of them were covered properly. I was more interested to see how Ammarah sealed the wok & how Madiha churned the lassi but seems like the main focus was on spoon stirring & veggie chopping throughout the episode. Even though the contestants have started to speak to the cameramen while they are cooking but none of them actually talk about the dish. All I hear them speak is about how hopeful or confident they are about their dishes. I feel that the contestants should speak more about the food & the techniques rather than being vocal about the results beforehand. Khurram, Ammarah tried to talk us through their dishes but the rest didn’t.

In my opinion, I feel that Khurram should’ve won the immunity pin but as Gulnaz is no doubt performing well I feel the judges have a soft corner for her therefore she was chosen. It’s good to see that the contestants are now getting along well with each other where they were being cordial & are being supportive of each other as well. Gulnaz got a great response & everyone was happy for her. Good to see her emerging as a strong contender. I don’t know why, I may be wrong but I felt that the way Chef Zakir changed the name of Gulnaz’s dish & made it sound similar to Rayyan’s dish, he was kind of personally attacking Rayyan for not being able to perform well. I know I may be wrong because it’s my assumption but the way Rayyan is being treated, it won’t be a surprise. Anyways, let’s see who goes this week so yes, please remember ‘no spoiler alerts here’. Share your say on this episode.

ps: I wish Ramadan Kareem to all my dear readers. I hope everyone gets to make the most of this blessed month & may Allah bless every single believer, Ameen. :)

Laa – Episode 4

0

The mystery element of the play along with the fact that for a change the central character in the story is not a female but a male and the story is not about a love triangle or about marital problems is what makes this play stand out in the crowd. Having said that I must admit that this may not be the kind of play that will hit a home run with the masses mostly because of its overall outlook. If the lighting and colors were slightly more alluring then it would have been a perfect package.

Daniyal is determined to find out about his background. When you find out that your whole life was a lie all of a sudden, some people have a difficult time coming into terms with the truth and they decide to go on with life pretending that they don’t need to know the truth but most often they react the way Daniyal did. He appreciates everything that his adoptive parents did for him but he cannot rest until he finds out about his roots. Daniyal’s entire personality has changed ever since he found out the truth. The carefree man who was full of confidence has been replaced by one who is lost and feels a great burden on his shoulders which will only be lifted when he finds out who his real parents were.

laa1

Dilawar’s character is a very interesting addition to the play. Dilawar and Laila both are not the usual characters with feudal backgrounds which we see on screen. Dilawar is a very likeable character and the way Laila helped Daniyal was either because she is a genuinely nice person or because she also wants to find out why Daniyal is looking for Peer Murtaza Shah…we will find out soon enough. The conversation between Laila and Dilawar about that piece of land he wanted went to show that Laila isn’t as “enlightened” or soft hearted as she appears to be.

Naina finds it very difficult to forget Daniyal but her mother is bent on getting her daughter married in an uncha khandan. The way Naina’s mother compared damaad and bakra was outrageous but then those lines portrayed her thinking perfectly. The turn of events in tonight’s episode were very intriguing indeed. Daniyal and Naina’s paths will meet yet again or maybe not! Will Naina end up getting married to Dilawar? She is definitely not the kind of girl who will let anyone else make such an important decision of her life but you never know.

laa2

I felt for Daniyal’s adoptive parents all through tonight’s episode. The actress playing Daniyal’s mother has failed to impress me with her acting, her dialogue delivery is very filmy. The story is unpredictable so far and the drama is moving ahead at a very good pace. I really like the OST; it is different and appealing but the background music can be a little too melancholic at times. It is good to see Mikaal Zulfiqar playing a different character. I am not a big fan of Sadia Khan ever since I watched her perform in Devar Bhabi but I must say that her acting in this serial is much better. Her performance is definitely not power packed but there are no glaring flaws in her acting either. In my opinion she needs to emote more.

Do share your thoughts about tonight’s episode.

Fake Facebook Pages Which Do Not Promote What They Promise

0

Facebook is fast turning out to be a very quick medium not only of communication between friends but different celebrities have facebook pages through which they stay in touch with their fans. Most often the fans of these celebrities do not think twice before liking a page that is named after their favorite celebrity because they want to get the latest updates about that personality. It has become very common practice that people make pages with the name of these celebrities but these pages promote everything else except the celebrity. Some of the posts are not only irrelevant but also absurd. Some fans are wise enough to unlike these pages as soon as they find out that the page does not qualify as an official page at all but there are many people who continue following these pages. There are also pages in which a person will talk to fans saying that he or she is the celebrity. There are also fake pages of celebrities which have more likes than the actual page of that star. Sometimes there is no official page at all so people just like whichever page is there. Celebrities are getting more and more conscious of these trends now so very often they keep on informing their fans which pages are fake and which are real. Many celebrities spread the word through their facebook pages and others do so in different interviews. Here are some so-called official pages that have many likes but they most certainly do not serve the purpose for which they have been liked. https://www.facebook.com/sanamjungloverspage – this is a link to Sanam Jung’s lovers page, it has 871,484 likes. If you click on the link you will find out that other than posting some random pictures of Sanam Jung here and there, there is nothing substantial on this page about the star.

It has a whooping 137,456 likes although it doesn’t have much about Mahira Khan on the page except the cover and the profile picture. Click the link to see the kind of things that are posted on the page. And whoever is running the page for some reason is desperate to promote 7th sky entertainment.

https://www.facebook.com/Sabaqamarofficial – this is the link to Saba Qamar’s facebook page. It has 663,837 likes. Many of the posts are highly uncalled for, I wonder if Saba Qamar would approve of them, There are many other such pages of many celebrities which make people believe that they are the official pages when actually they are not. Do you think that people who make these pages and those who are running it have a responsibility to notify the fans in a loud and clear way that these are not the official pages but are run by fans of these celebrities. In some instances they are not even run by fans but they are only there to promote random things that have nothing to do with the celebrity. Sometimes these pages post pictures and ask question like “what do you think of my acting” and other such question which are misleading. The question is that will the celebrities whose names are being used to promote really strange and irrelevant things on these pages approve of these things? Isn’t it unfair that the names of these celebrities are being used to promote things that have nothing to do with them? Feel free to share links of other such fake pages which use the name of celebrities to promote things that have not much to do with them.

Sahib Dilan صاحبدلان , an iranian drama on ATV

Sahib Dilan صاحبدلان  is an Urdu dubbed Iranian drama which will be aired on ATV, the only private terrestrial channel in Pakistan which is also available on satellite.

Though dramas of another muslim majority country Turkey are quite popular in our country, but dramas of Iran another muslim
majority country and our western neighbor are not a preferred choice for media houses. ATV was the first one which aired a regular Iranian drama Roz-e-Hasrat (https://reviewit.pk/first-iranian-drama-on-pakistani-channel/) last year in Ramazan which went unnoticed. This year ATV is again coming up with Iranian darama. Like last
year it will be telecasted in matinee timings instead of prime time.

Iran is western neighbour of Pakistan with Persian (Farsi) as official language. Despite strict regulations for media
content, Iran has a vibrant film and television industry. Irani films are viewed and produced in good numbers. Iranian films and television are also followed in persian speaking countries/regions of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Bahrain and Iraq. In Pakistan, cultural centers of Iran are located in all major cities which regularly arrange film festivals where irani films are screened. However for some un-explainable reasons Iranian films are not able to appeal general public. Regarding television dramas, no private satellite channel has ever aired any regular Iranian drama, ATV is the only one which has done it last year. However Iranian productions on religious and historical events are aired on satellite channels, these include dramas on event of karbala, moharram and history of arab anudulus. Last year TV One has also aired a serial on history of spain under arab rule, which was perhaps an Iranian production.

Mausam – Episode 6

0

I hate to start this review on a harsh note but after watching 3 episodes of Mausam back-to-back (including the latest one) I must say that this drama serial puts HUM TV’s tradition of Friday night entertaining plays to shame. In these 6 weeks Mausam has gone from being a drama that has shown done-to-death clichés to the limit to one which is turning out to be lame and not the least bit entertaining.

There isn’t even a single character that has managed to win my sympathy or evoke any emotions in me at all! Shazia, the ultimate spoiled brat and drama queen has her mother wrapped around her little finger now since the doctor who probably had psychic powers evaluated in a very short period that Shazia was under stress. People faint for a lot of reasons and Shazia for one is not the sort of girl who would have a nervous breakdown but on the contrary she is quite capable of giving someone else a mental breakdown. Shazia’s character makes me sick, Yumna Zaidi should put her talent to good use by starring in more quality projects and doing different kind of roles.

m2

Saman calls her husband-to-be Faisal bhai only few days before her marriage. Yeh kya honey ja raha hai, mujhe buhat dur lag raha hai is the only reaction she gives to such a shocking news. The latest developments were not the least bit convincing. I understand that Saman is a good girl who will never go against her phupo’s wishes but doesn’t she have any self respect? Saman and Faisal’s marriage appeared to be a very forced twist in the story. Saman is going to turn into an even more of a bechari very soon when Faisal refuses to accept her as his wife (easy guess!!). Faisal’s mother’s shrill voice is getting on my nerves, as if the drama is not annoying enough as it is!

m1

Mehreen saves the day by telling Hashir’s mother about Saman and quite surprisingly Hashir’s mother is willing to marry Hashir to the love of his life.

m4

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Ahsan Khan’s acting but it seems like he intends to be a part of every mediocre show that we are going to see this year. He must be tired of getting married to the wrong girl by now, he really should give himself a break. This drama could easily pass for one of those plays which you keep on watching for killing time or out of curiosity, otherwise it does not deserve to be watched at all.

Mausam isn’t my cup of tea at all, the production values are great but that’s about it! If this was a calendar I would have been very impressed with the colors etc but this is a drama which requires much more than good production values to enthrall the viewers.

The preview of the next episode showed that Saman gets married to Faisal and it is only after her marriage that Hashir and his mother come to Saman’s house with the proposal *yawn*.
