Mathira believes that a star’s screen presence is more important than anything else. While giving an interview to a local newspaper Mathira revealed that she was offered several projects from Bollywood but then she was expecting her baby. Talking about leaving those offers to start a family she said, “I won’t lie. When my baby was born, I was made to cancel my Bollywood projects. Film projects may come and go but one’s family life must remain constant.”

Diyar-e-Dil – Episode 29!

OMG! This episode was soooo special & nice. I awed throughout the episode because once again it was filled with such emotional dialogues & scenes that it took me to the beautiful world of its own. :)

‘Dil suboot aur gawwah nahi mangta, jahan aqal khatam hoti hai na beta, wahan se dil ki dunya shuru hoti hai’. Isn’t it nice to see that every time Faarah & Agha Jaan talk about something, they end up helping each other one way or the other? Just when Faarah was feeling low & guilty, just a single statement from Agha Jaan helped her get back on her feet & forgive herself. I loved the way Faarah came to terms with her past & her feelings. She is done blaming herself because she now understands that she isn’t such a bad person to begin with, why, because she always followed her heart & it never lied to her. Faarah now knows that every time she followed her heart & everything that her heart told her was right & that’s the way it should be & this is exactly something that gave her the confidence to share her innermost feelings with Agha Jaan. I love how gradually Faarah has developed a confidence that allows her to discuss almost any & everything with Agha Jaan & she isn’t ashamed to admit to him that she has hurt him & how apologetic she is of her past. I love how they have showed that it took her sometime but now when she has started following her heart, Faarah knows she cannot live without her father’s family, her Agha Jaan. I lovedddd how Agha Jaan could see that even though Behroz was not in contact with him, he never let go of the things he was taught by his father & that is why, Faarah knew exactly what Agha Jaan was telling her because that wasn’t something new for her as she had heard all of that from Behroz. The sense of satisfaction that Agha Jaan achieved after that conversation showed that somehow Faarah perfectly compensates Behroz’s absence from his life & he looks at Faarah with a very different perspective because through her, he feels strongly connected to his son; Behroz.

Isn’t it nice to see Zarmeenay helping Faarah with her relationship goals? Zarmeenay obviously knows that Faarah is in love with Wali & she also knows that Wali is in love with Faarah too but there are some misunderstandings & a communication gap that is hindering them from working out their differences. I thought it was very sweet of her to break the ice & take the initiative to help Faarah because she knows that Faarah is all alone & she actually has no one to talk to & no one to rely emotionally upon. I love how intuitive & fair both Wali & Zarmeenay are & I say this because Zarmeenay knows how hard Arjumand is being on Faarah & she admitted it too. Even though she tried to make Faarah understand Arjumand’s reasons, she never once tried to rationalize her mother’s behavior. Zarmeenay knows that Faarah is having a hard time because of Arjumand but she is optimistic that once Faarah will sort out her differences with Wali, Arjumand will accept her because for Arjumand, Wali’s happiness matters the most.

Oh well, Wali Suhaib Khan ke chehre pe muskurahat aa hi gai Faarah Behroz Khan ke khayal se. I think there is something very sweet about how Wali is keeping his feelings to himself. He has always loved Faarah but now he knows that the whole situation is quite complicated & it can further complicate things because where on one hand Faarah wants to be with him, on the other hand Arjumand wants her gone. I loved Wali’s balanced approach where he tried to make Arjumand understand that no matter what transpires between him & Faarah, it will never take away her right of being in this Haveli because it belongs to Agha Jaan & she is as much a part of a family as the rest of them are. I respect Arjumand for the fact that she always respects Wali’s decisions & his approach that is why she exactly knew what Wali said wasn’t wrong & he wasn’t being biased too. I know it’s random but just when Faarah was telling Zarmeenay about how she feels for Wali, I wished Zarmeenay had recorded all of that on her mobile & Whatsapp’ed it to Wali, haha! :)

Honestly speaking, I had a giggle spree during Moeez & Ruhina’s confrontation, lol. Too bad that I didn’t feel bad for Ruhina at all because this is exactly what she needed to wake up. Moeez has taken desperate measures because Imran is giving him a hard time & it was shocking to see that even Tajjamul couldn’t do anything to control Moeez’s rage. It still looked like Tajjamul was feeling bad for his sister but sorry; he is the one who started this game, so now he should bear the consequences too. Tajjamul now can’t stop or blame Zohra or Moeez because he is solely responsible for all this & what Moeez is doing is exactly what he learnt from his parents & his father in particular. BUT, I will say that again, no sympathies for Ruhina, right!

Oh well, the preview of the next episode was super enticing & it got me excited but, let me just say, I am not making it as a separate note but adding it in the review itself to make my point very clear. First off, I thank all the spoiler alerters (if that’s not a word, I am inventing it) for bringing it to my attention in the previous review that Wali is teasing Faarah & what not, I let it slide because it was something that didn’t matter much but, I am very nicely & politely letting you all know that if I come across any such comment that would discuss or give spoiler alerts for the next episode, those comments will be removed. Please, let those who have not read the novel enjoy the drama as it is & keep it in mind that we’re not in a hurry to discuss what is yet to come. ;) Thank you!!!

Anyways, this is it from my side for this week’s episode of Diyar-e-Dil. I loved loved loveddd it & I must say Maya Ali looked absolutely gorgeous during the engagement scene. Hareem Farooq is such a strong actor & I really wish she opts for more such characters that allow her to elaborate her acting skills like this. I loveddd all the scenes of Agha Jaan because Sir Abid Ali makes sure we enjoy his conversations with his family. I know it’s a bit random but I love the way Faarah has made shawls/scarves a part of her attire after Wali brought it to her notice, I know they have depicted a change of weather through that somehow but it also reflects how much Faarah respects Wali & what his words mean to her. Maya Ali perfectly described Faarah’s excitement when Wali started a conversation with her; those minute expressions told the story of her excitement & disappointment at the same time that he had nothing to say to her, about her. I absolutely love the way their relationship is being told, it’s absolutely sweet & spicy at the same time. :) Please share your beautiful thoughts about the beautiful episode of Diyar-e-Dil & oh, let’s congratulate Zarmeenay on getting engaged, haha! :)

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

ps: Well, I know that a lot of people read Diyar-e-Dil’s reviews, that is why I am using it to convey my message to HUM TV that where we all know about Bin Roye’s success, we also know that it’s been more than 2 months since its release so to see its trailers almost 100 times a day is now taking a toll on me (& I am sure on others too). So, I think it’s a high time to put a kibosh on its trailers because let’s admit, it’s almost a history now aur abb to dono Eids ghuzar gain! Please HUM TV, move on & start promoting some other movies & if not, at least stop promoting Bin Roye post-release because it doesn’t make much sense! Thank you!

Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai- Episode 9 – 14

The past six episodes seemed to drag on forever. Atiya cautioned Nafeesuddin that Jaani is on the verge of making a blunder and she hinted at Mehtaab being the cause of his Deewanapan. Jaani made a dash to express his undying love for Mehtaab but that resulted in her getting tossed out of the house and Jaani was beaten up by his crazy father until he bled. Mehtaab found her way to her friend Rehana’s home. Rehana is a nurse and is married to Shakoor who works in a morgue and on the side, he practices dark magic using dead bodies. I don’t get why Shakoor and Rehana’s story is given such importance that much of the previous few episodes were about their lives.

Nurse Mehtaab has finally managed to get settled and even has a home now- one that she used to live in with her ex husband. Again, I fail to see the relevance in this. Tauseeq and Atiya continue consoling each other giving the family an opportunity to question their relationship. Nighat is divorced and is now living in Nafeesuddin’s home and is determined to be a part of his life. The storyline was all over the place almost as if the writer asked for volunteers to contribute a short story and finally consolidating them into the main one.

The only constant remained Mehtaab’s red lipstick! Yes, rain or shine, Mehtaab doesn’t shy away from that luscious red. Jaani managed to track her down and now sits by her door and watches her come and go… Shakoor Bhai has his eyes on Mehtaab too! Will Jaani win his love back by saving her from the evil clutches of the dispecable Shakoor Bhai? Will Mehtaab ditch her 11 year old tube of lipstick and replace it with a new shade? Will Rakshanda finally do the naagin dance? Will Atiya ever get a break from the kitchen and those rotis? Oh, I almost forgot to mention, Nafeesuddin took Jaani to see a psychiatrist- I think pretty much everyone is in household is in need of some serious help!

Naml: Episode 15

0

Namlians received their Eid gift in the form of an early episode, and what an episode it was! Number 15 of Naml (or should I say Nahl) once again made us cry, laugh and ponder simultaneously all through its 55 pages.

****SPOILER ALERT****

Progress

Summarizing the story, we got several major developments. I would list them in bullets for your ease and mine:

  • The Kardaars suspect that Faris is behind the accident in Dr. Bukhari’s hospital-to-be. Khawar resolves to find clues about finding Faris’s hand in all this.
  • Shehreen requests to meet Faris in a restaurant, but seeing Haneen with him, changes the topic to the gun used to shoot Saadi. Faris mentions the gun’s exact model and Shehreen suddenly remembers that Sheru possesses this model.
  • Ahmar is interrogated by Faris in front of Zumar and Haneen about the thing by which Justice Sikandar was blackmailed by Saadi. He tells them that Justice Sikandar murdered an OCP of Intermediate Board. This was the very same OCP whom Haneen is guilty of blackmailing.
  • Saadi’s pen camera originally belongs to Mr. OCP and contains the video of him being murdered at the hands of Justice Sikandar. Saadi finds this pen on OCP’s desk when he goes to his house after Haneen’s confession.
  • Zumar realizes that the keychain and the pen given to him by Gul Khan are Saadi’s. She meets Gul Khan who tells her that it was found in the purse of a lady from the under construction building. Zumar learns about how the woman look like but it is not enough to lead her to Sarah yet.
  • Haneen reads Shaikh’s book and finds herself as the diseased person she saw earlier, who was diagnosed with Ishq. She gets horrified by seeing this and refuses the Shaikh’s offer to cure her.
  • Hashim goes to meet Saadi and demands to provide confidential information about his Thar Coal project. Saadi refuses to co-operate at any cost. Hashim threatens him and leaves for a few hours giving him time to think.
  • Aabdar Obaid comes to know that her father and Hashim are involved in keeping some scientist in a safe house as she overhears her father’s call to Hashim. Later on, she learns from Ahmar that Saadi is a NESCOM scientist who is most probably been abducted for the sake of confidential information.
  • Hashim gets back to Saadi and plays Haneen’s audio message on Whatsapp in which she agrees to come with his driver to a hotel. He pressurizes Saadi by sharing his nasty plans with him. Saadi feels utterly helpless but then notices Haneen’s Whatsapp status of a part of Ayah 68 of Surah Nahl and a video camera icon.
  • He notices that the audio message was sent prior to changing the status. He calms himself down and says that Haneen would never go with Hashim’s driver. Hashim makes snide comments but gets blown over when Haneen calls him and says that she won’t come as Saadi has forbade her to go. She also makes a strong point to discontinue any such conversation between them. Hashim gets utterly shocked and repeatedly asks Saadi what has he done sitting here? Saadi (all relieved now) recites these Ayahs:

“So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaitan. Surely, he has no authority over those who believe and rely on their Lord. His authority is only over those who befriend him and those who associate others with Him.”

Surah Nahl 98-100

  • Haneen after sending that audio in which she agreed to come to a hotel remembers that Saadi used to post some Tafseer videos on his facebook page. She remembers the one about Ayahs 66 to 69 of Surah Nahl and plays it. Saadi explains that Allah (SWT) might have made an analogy of honey bees with girls. Honey bees are supposed to follow the paths made easier for them, just as young women are supposed to follow the straight and halaal path led for them. But now-a-days, honey bees are getting confused by the mobile signals in the air, which mess up their sense of direction and they get lost and deviate from the straight path. Likewise, girls are deviating from the straight path because of unlawful and unethical conversations with na-mehrams on mobile phone. Haneen cries while watching this video and then calls Hashim to discontinue any unlawful contact they used to have.
  • Saadi used to ask his listeners to change their Whatsapp status to the Ayah learned today for 24 hours. That’s how he knew that Haneen has recently seen that video and will not go with Hashim’s driver.
  • Shehreen meets Sheru and tricks her into telling her about the gun he possessed. Although, Sheru rejects outright that he had that particular model but in his stupidity gives all the clues against his statement through his body language.
  • Zumar and Haneen watch the video of the OCP being murdered and then watch the whole video of Saadi’s meeting with the Kardaars. Both of them receive immense shock after this realization but decide not to tell Faris about this truth because he might do something stupid.
  • Justice Sikandar has recently been appointed as a high court judge and a party is thrown in his honour. Zumar (along with Faris) is invited to this party. Faris remembers how arrogantly Sikandar had refused to plead his case justly. He plans Sikandar’s destruction by publicizing the OCP’s murder video and the honourable Justice’s Reputation goes down the sewers when that video is played in his party.
  • Zumar is told by her doctor that her donated kidney is no longer supporting her.

Points to Ponder

  • Zumar now realizes that Faris is not guilty, but has not told him yet. Her ego restricts her from confessing her fault. Let us hope that this does not create more problems for the couple.
  • Speaking about Zumar, I hope she is not in grave danger because of her deteriorating health. But I remember a conversation between her and Hanna when Hanna asks her that why do writers kill the character we love the most and Zumar replies that the writer makes us love the character that is about to die. I hope this was not a clue for her death :(
  • It might be Saadi whom Hashim remembers whenever he sees Haroon Obaid’s face and gets sad.
  • Aabdar is getting closer to the truth. She seems pretty innocent but she has a sharp mind too. The question remains that who was her fiancé who beat Sheru up and why did Saadi not help him? Probably Saadi thought that this was for Sheru’s own good:)
  • The revelation part was pretty straight forward, but thank God Zumar and Hanna saw that video safely. I was dreading some more twists before it.
  • What was it that Shehreen needed to discuss with Faris? Is she really interested in him? Shehreen! Woman! Get a grip, you will only hurt yourself!

Best Scene

For me, and I am sure for most of you, the best scene was the Tafseer one. As I read the translation of the ayahs, some connections were being made in my mind to Haneen’s present situation too. But the way the whole concept was explained was awesome. Only this powerful reminder from Allah (SWT) and an explanation from her brother could snap Hanna out of her disease. The way it was showed that your good deed comes back to you was amazing as well. Saadi never would have imagined that he would help his sister and himself by a good deed done so long ago. But Allah (SWT) always remembers and returns the favours multiplying manifolds.

Quality Rating

The pace was fast as usual and character development was exemplary as usual too. The episode had all the elements tied together like a wonderful necklace. I would rate this episode as 5 out of 5 because for me it was flawless.

Share your own review with us please:)

Eagerly waiting for the next installment.

5 Reasons Why Bushra Ansari Should Quit Hosting!

0

Like every other person who thinks that our talented Bushra Ansari can do it all I also thought that she will nail hosting her own Morning Show too. I was also very happy to see stars from the past being invited in her shows because all the other Morning Show hosts focus more on young actors and actresses. While attempting to watch a few episodes of her Morning Show I have come to the conclusion that Bushra Ansari should not host any shows at all. Rest of the Morning Show hosts are typical and they also show the same old things but there are some things about Bushra Ansari that are especially irritating and more importantly it looks like she might be setting a few very bad precedents which other hosts might be tempted to follow.

I think that when someone is hosting a show they should be decent and they should encourage the guest to talk about themselves but Bushra Ansari overacts and does some things which are not very decent.

Talking More About Her Own Experiences Than Letting The Guests Talk!

Bushra Ansari always brings her own experiences related to work and family both in all her shows. There is nothing wrong with that as long the guests get to share their thoughts with equal freedom too. She asks a question but does not wait for an answer from the guest and starts saying things on the topic herself! We understand that Bushra Ansari is very experienced but she should understand that this show is not about advertising her own self but about getting to know more about her guests. Whenever I watched her show at the end of the show I realized that I found out very little about the guest and a lot about what Bushra Ansari did in her life!

The “Evil” Laughter!

Bushra Ansari’s laughter would fit perfectly in any animation where there is a wicked witch who has succeeded in accomplishing her evil plans but it is not fit for anything else. Her laughter is strange and evil, she really should work on it! It suited Shazia Chaudhry’s character but it does not suit Bushra Ansari the hostess!

bushra1

Flirting With Her Guests

Nida Yasir, Shaista Wahidi and Sanam Jung are not perfect hosts too but at least they have enough integrity to not flirt with their guests. Sometimes it looks like Bushra Ansari takes undue advantage of her age and thinks people will excuse her for flirting with actors who are young enough to be her sons because she is old enough to be their mother! The flirting is uncalled for and it doesn’t fit in at all.

Greeting The Guests With Hugs And Kisses

Whether it is one of the old actors or the young ones Bushra Ansari’s way of greeting them is highly unpleasant. Their personal ties aside, Bushra Ansari should keep things decent on television. I hope that other hosts won’t be following her footsteps.

Dressing Up Like A Teenager

Bushra Ansari carries herself and dresses up like she is a teenager. I would say that younger hosts of different Morning Shows do not look so inappropriate when they wear fashionable clothes or do not wear a duppata but such clothes and the absence of duppata does not suit someone who people want to respect because of her experience and age.

Bushra Ansari does not make her guests play silly games on her shows but she has not been able to host the show with the grace with which the viewers wanted her to host it. Bushra Ansari is very good at doing comedy but this comedy is somewhat inappropriate for a Morning Show. I wish that Bushra Ansari showcased her intelligence more than her comic skills in her show. Bushra Ansari concluded her last Morning Show this week and with this show it would be really good if she concludes her hosting career altogether.

What do you think? Do you like Bushra Ansari’s hosting skills?

0

Mawra Hocane has been keeping her fans updated about how busy she has been shooting her Bollywood film. She is trying very hard to make people understand that a lot of hard work is going into what she is doing. She has been having sleepless nights and she also sprained her ankle while she was busy training before the shooting started.

The poster of Mawra Hocane’s first Bollywood venture titled “Sanam Teri Kasam” is finally out. In this poster we see Mawra wearing the same dress which she was criticized for earlier and she is lying down in amtub full of rose petals with her hero sitting down helplessly beside her. Here is the poster:

1

Mawra hasn’t talked much about the story of the film but she has revealed that it is a love story. The line “A love story sealed with a curse” suggests that this love story is going to be a serious one and one without a happy ending. In one of her interviews given when her first photograph from the film came out Mawra said, “Now that I have entered Bollywood, I have to explore new horizons as an actor. Our people always take time to adjust whenever something new is done and that’s exactly what happened with my shoot.”

Mawra is confident about her work and has been asking her fans to support her. The film is going to be released on January 8th. Mawra is very excited for her film.

Ayesha Khan Meets Ranbir Kapoor And Katrina Kaif

0

Indian and Pakistanis always have wonderful experiences with each other whenever there is people to people contact at any level at all. All the Pakistani celebrities who have gone to work in India always say that Indians are very supportive and Indians who come to Pakistan are very often shocked by the love they get here.

Ayesha Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif met while they were all in London. Ayesha Khan posted her pictures with these two actors. We don’t know yet what conversation took place between them but seeing them in the same frame is most certainly something pleasing. It was also Ranbir Kapoor’s birthday when Ayesha Khan met him.

Here are some pictures which were also there on Ranbir’s fan’s twitter account:

Ayesha Khan’s status suggested that this was a chance meeting and she was star struck!

Top 5 Reasons Why Pakistani Dramas Are The Best

0

Pakistani drama has grown a great deal of progress since it first started. There was a time when there was only one channel airing Pakistani dramas and a handful of writers and producers. Even at that time Pakistani dramas were considered the best in the region but now there is more variety and while we see many people complaining that the dramas in the PTV era were better than the ones which are airing on different channels nowadays there is no doubting the fact that even today Pakistani dramas are much better than dramas that are being made in many other parts of the world. Pakistani drama industry is flourishing and there are variety of serials which give everyone something to watch.

Here are top 5 reasons why Pakistani dramas are the best:

Impressive Scripts:

The scripts of all the Pakistani dramas are not impressive which is something natural when so much work is being done. There are some dramas that are average, some below average but some that blow the audience away. As long there will be writers who keep on giving us dramas like Pyare Afzal, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Diyar-e-Dil, Manjali and many other hit dramas of recent times we can be sure that there are writers in Pakistan who can write scripts which can impress the audience in and outside the country.

drama

Immaculate Direction:

Pakistan is home to some of the best directors in the drama industry. These are the people who have made Pakistani drama what it is today. These intelligent directors present the script written by the writers in such a way that the viewers get hooked to the dramas. These directors are not big in number but they do exist and whenever they direct a drama it is sure to be a hit.

Flawless Performances:

Pakistan actors, old and new are powerhouses of talent. They have impressed the viewers with their performances number of times. These actors are versatile which is why we see them in different avatars. They take up challenges and never fail to depict all the different shades of their characters. A drama can never be a hit or a success if the actors who act in it do not do their job properly. The new blood that has been added to the drama industry will only take it further.

dramas1

Close To Reality:

Another reason why Pakistani dramas are the best is that they are close to reality. The happenings and the characters are real so people can relate to them. They see their own stories being played in these dramas very often. The dramas are not over dramatic which also makes them more real.

dramas2

Variety Of Topics:

Most of the Pakistani dramas are women centric but they deal with different topics related to women. The sitcoms and other plays also give the public variety of topics to watch in these drama. The dramas also touch social issues of different kinds. These dramas are not all the same, some show young people dealing with different problems and there are others which show different generations.

dramas4

Apart from these five big reasons why Pakistani dramas are the best there are also other reasons like lately there has been a lot of focus on the locations and some dramas have breathtaking locations. So these dramas also show people that side of Pakistan which they have not seen even living in Pakistan.

The production values of these dramas and the money that the producers are investing have made the drama industry what it is today. The biggest production houses of the country which are also making films are actively taking part in financing Pakistani dramas.

We wish the Pakistani drama industry all the best in the future too.

Is Mehwish Hayat Going To Be The Next Pakistani Actress In Bollywood?

0

Mehwish Hayat has recently shifted her interest from dramas to films. After performing an item number in Na Maloom Afraad Mehwish Hayat is proud that she has an important role to play in the new Pakistani film Jawani Phir Nahi Aani. Talking to a local newspaper about her experience in the film Mehwish Hayat said, “After Na Maloom Afraad I got a lot of offers to work in films – even from India – but I wanted to make a proper film debut in Pakistan first. The story of Jawani Phir Nahi Aani appealed to me that is why I decided to be a part of it.” Mehwish Hayat thinks that the film has a lot of potential and it will be a blockbuster.

1

When asked how Mehwish Hayat felt about her sequence in a bikini in the film she said, “First of all let me clarify one thing: what I am wearing in that scene is not a bikini. If you look at it, then you will know that it is a sarong and trust me we made sure to avoid a bikini. The sarong is a local dress and covers most of your body. I think it should be acceptable to the audience. People love to make issues out of nothing and then they go and watch the movie as well!”

3

Mehwish Hayat said that her first song is due to be released soon and she is very excited about that. She also said, “I have offers from both sides of the border. I am not revealing anything as yet because I am a big believer in one should only talk about things once they are confirmed. I might go to India – if need be.”

mehwish hayat

Mehwish Hayat mentions offers Bollywood offers repeatedly in her interview which gives us a feeling that she might be the next Pakistan actress to be seen in a Bollywood film.

After making the record opening day business record in Pakistani cinemas of 2.07 crore (20.7 million), now Jawani Phir Nahin Aani, has surpassed its own record of a single day business. On the second day of the Eidul Azha (Saturday, 26th September 2015), the film has earned 2.68 crores (26.8 million) which is an all time record for a single day of business on Pakistani box office surpassing the 2.5 crore record of Furious 7 which it made in April 2015 (Saturday, 4th April, 2015 to be precise). The film JPNA has more than 200 shows daily which surely helped in making this record.

Though producers of Pakistani films seldom shares the revenue figures officially, the producers of JPNA the ARY Films has shared this information in a tweet on their official twitter account.
day2
Seeing this trend the film is now expected to earn further on the third day of Eid (Sunday 27th September, 2015) and challenging the record of highest weekend collection of 7.25 crores made by Hollywood’s Furious 7 in April 2015.

Hollywood films are released on latest technology screens like IMAX and 3D and therefore that ticket price is quite high ranging from 700 – 1500 or even higher. So the high price of tickets results in high revenue collection of Hollywood films even if a Hollywood film is released on less number of screens. As compared to Hollywood films tickets of Bollywood and Urdu films start from 200-400 rupees.

JPNA is also released simultaneously in many countries like UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, UK, Canada and USA. On the whole it is an encouraging sign for Pakistani film industry that cine goers are now also watching local Urdu films in huge numbers, along with the routine activity of endorsing Bollywood films.

The market of Hindi/Urdu films as well as Hollywood films in Pakistan is limited to the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Federal capital Islamabad. In the other two provinces namely Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa only Pashto films are released due to limited demand of Hindi/Urdu films. The market of Hollywood films is mainly restricted to big multiplexes cinemas in the urban centers.

Baazi Off Road Ki (بازی آف روڈ کی) by OLX

Our country is blessed with many heavenly locations which exist in all the federal regions and provinces. However our media seldom pays attention to this aspect of our country, perhaps too busy in promoting negativity which brings more ratings as compared to promoting positive aspects. There is a distinction and one such program was aired on Geo News named Geo Ajooba few years ago which shows some breath taking scenery of Pakistan.

However soon multiple channels will air a show which covers many beautiful locations of Pakistan. The reason for this is not the TRP or goodwill on part of the management of our channels, but the handsome revenue which these channels will earn by airing this program. Totally Right! it is a program sponsored by OLX, means a paid program rather than any initiative of a channel.

Baazi Off Road Ki (بازی آف روڈ کی) is a travel show which will focus  some prettiest locations of Pakistan like Deosai located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The show will be hosted by Nomi Qamar and directed by Yasir Nisaar.  Nomi Qamar has been a leading model of our country who have also hosted a talk show All About Men on Style 360.The show will be aired in coming weeks.

Here are the promos and clicks of this show.

Jawani Phir Nahin Aani record opening day of business

Jawani Phir Nahin Aani is a film released on Eidul Azha on 25th September 2015 and distributed by ARY Films. The film also has few preview shows on 24th September 2015 at selected theaters. 25th September 2015 has passed and now the statistics of revenue earned by JPNA are being consolidated.

Normally in Pakistan distributors and producers of Pakistani films seldom make the earning of their film public. All the figures and statistics which are quoted and maintained are unofficial based upon the figures shared by different multiplexes. However a rare occasion, the distributor of JPNA i.e. ARY Films have officially shared the business of the film on the opening day in a tweet.

2015-09-26_22-41-36

As per the tweet JPNA has earned 20.7 million rupees (2.07 crore) on its opening day, which is a record opening day business for any film in Pakistan. Before JPNA, the highest opening day business was 20.5 million rupees (2.05 crore) by the Hollywood film Fast & Furious 7 released in April this year.

Here are the top 5 films with their opening day revenue.

1- Jawani Phir Nahi Ani2.07cr (2015- Urdu – Karawood)
2- Furious 7  2.05cr (2015 – Hollywood)
3- Dhoom 3.. 1.8cr (2013 – Bollywood)
4- Welcome Back.. 1.6cr (2015 – Bollywood)
5- Happy New Year.. 1.5cr (2014 -Bollywood)

Analyzing these statistics it is quite obvious that before 2015, Bollywood films were ruling the charts with highest opening day collections proving the widespread appeal of Bollywood films among Pakistani cine goers. However in 2015, Furious 7 took over the chart. Furious 7 tremendous success is mostly attributed to the untimely death of its leading actor Paul Walker.

Just few weeks ago (September 4th to be precise), another Bollywood movie Welcome Back received a grand reception and the film also jumped in the list of top 5 films. Now JPNA which is the first local film to appear in the top 5 list has jumped to the No. 1 spot.

The next record which JPNA might break is the highest collection on a weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Currently the record is also with Furious 7 with an earning of 7.25 crores.

JPNA is also released simultaneously in many countries like UAE, UK and USA. On the whole it is an encouraging sign for Pakistani film industry that cine goers are now also watching local Urdu films in huge numbers, along with the routine of endorsing Bollywood films.

The market of Hindi/Urdu films in Pakistan is limited to the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Federal capital Islamabad. In the other two provinces namely Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa only Pashto films are released due to limited demand of Hindi/Urdu films.

Halla Gulla – A Review

0

Halla Gulla is an Urdu film released on Eidul Azha Friday 25th September 2015. Termed as romantic comedy the film stars many new and relatively un-famous artists in its cast. The tagline of the film is “Pakistan first solid entertainer”. The film is produced in Karachi (Karawood).

Starring: Javed Sheikh, Ismail Tara, Ghazala Javed, Asim Mehmood, Muneeb, Sidra Batool, Ashraf Khan ,Zara Gul Jasmeen Adil Wadia, Maryam Ansari, Hina Rizvi, Hunain Maniar, Bilal Yousufzai, Jasmeen
Director & Screenplay: Kamran Akbar Khan
Writer: Raheela Mushtaq Shah
Producer: Hamid Mohammad
Designer: EDGE (Men)
Composer: Saahir Ali Bagga
Studio: MFN (VFX Director-1stop Studio)
& Social Media
DOP: Asif Khan
Editor: Nasir Inayat

It is the story of Saahil (Asim Mehmood) who is the son of the a Don named Golden Bhai played by Javed Sheikh. The second hero Udaas (Muneeb Butt) is stuck in a problem which is the cliched theme of two weddings (do shadiyan), both his wives (Zara Gul and Jasmeen) are unaware of each other’s presence and thus Udaas is getting more udaas (sad) due to this. Both heroes are linked via the heroine of Saahil (Asim Mehmood), Muskarahat (Sidraa Batool) who is the sister of Udaas (Muneeb Butt). The tussles and friendship of Udaas and Saahil and settling of their issues is the whole story of the film. In between their are also sizeable performances from veterans Javed Sheikh and Asim Mehmood.

The film has a total of five songs. Out of these four are item cum dance numbers. Infact all four can be classified as item numbers. All the four songs are filmed on a different artists. The film starts with a steamy performance, ‘Zero Meter‘ shot on artist Rubab. Apart from zero meter the other item/dance number are filmed on Mahnoor (song: Thumka), Rachel Gill (song: Halla Gulla) and Mariam Ansari (Ishq Kamla). The dance of all the artists was mostly in sync with the music.

The only soft song is Suroor De in the voices of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Afshan Jawwad is filmed on the heroine Muskarahat (Sidrah Batool) and Saahil (Asim Mehmood). Suroor De though pleasant to ears, is the most weak song in terms of performance in this film.

Seeing this film reminded of Urdu films made in 1990’s like Munda Bigra Jaye, Muamla Garbar Hai, Miss Istanbul. The Urdu cinema declined in 1980’s while Punjabi and Pashto cinema progressed quite steadily. Thus the majority of few Urdu films made in 1990’s were made by the producers of Punjabi films and the Punjabi touch or influence of Punjabi cinema was also reflected in these films be it dressing or dances. Till 1980’s Urdu cinema had a clear distinction from Punjabi cinema. Even the actors of Urdu and Punjabi cinema were separate. While Sultan Rahi/Anjuman were hit in Punjabi films, Nadeem/Shabnam and Babra Sharif were the leading stars of Urdu cinema. Films of both language have visible differences in songs, dressing, story, dances (Urdu films have very few dances) and performance.

But in 1990’s the distinction gradually faded, the artists of Punjabi films started working in Urdu cinema like Neeli, Reema, Saima, Shaan. So in many Urdu films of 1990’s it was common to see the daughter of an urban Seth wearing traditional punjabi laacha kurta. Also dances of Urdu films became more and more sleazy like Punjabi films, while acting got louder and louder like Punjabi films. But that was a memory of the past which has passed a decade ago. Seeing Halla Gulla reminded me of the same feel of the Urdu cinema of the 1990’s which infact was the lowest point of Urdu cinema in our cinema history. Despite produced in Karachi, the film has a feel of Urdu film produced in Lahore in the 90’s.

Though I watched the film in a multiplex, the film suits more for the audience of traditional single screen cinemas. So it might do well in the single screen cinemas, as compared to Multiplexes.

Here are the high and low points of the film.

Highs
The picture quality or the production quality of the film is quite good. Different locations of Karachi are shot skillfully.

The music of the film is also a plus and consists of five songs. Suroor De in the voices of Rahat Fateh Ali is soft and pleasant to ears. While the rest of the four songs which all are dance numbers are also well composed.

The film has four item/dance numbers, and dances on these songs is another highlight of the film. Anyone fond of loud dances on silver screen will like these performances. (Especially the followers of dance perfomances in Punjabi stage shows). Also as compared to the item/dance numbers released this year like Selfiyan (in Wrong Number shot on Sohai Ali Aabro), Tooti Frooti (in Karachi Se Lahore shot on Ayesha Omar), Jawaani (in Jalebi shot on Zhalay Sarhadi), dances here are in sync with music.

The film has many new faces, introducing young blood in the films is a couragous act which should be appreciated. It is the first films for Sidrah Batool, Muneeb Butt, Marium Ansari, Rachel Gill, Hina Rizvi and many others.

Veterans Javed Sheikh and Ismail Tara have performed well as usual and tried to add life to the film, despite weak script.

Lows
The backbone of a film is its script, and it is the weakest point of Halla Gulla. The plot of the film is supported by a disjointed and crippled script which in turn badly impacted the performance of the artists as well. The dialogues are also lifeless not providing the desired comic feel.

Major attention or budget of the film is spent on filming the songs, similar attention on the script and screenplay could have also provided a better cinema experience to the viewers.

There are far too many characters in the film, which appear and disappear without leaving any impact. At times even the leading characters feel as side characters.

The dances which I have mentioned as a high point of the film are also a low point of the film for anyone not a fan of Punjabi cinema styled dances. As the songs Zero Meter and Thumka have the influence of traditional Punjabi film. The latka, jhatka and thumka a signature trademark of Punjabi cinema and stage shows is also in these songs.

Performance wise, all the new comers despite their efforts are not able to leave any impact. The moment your are out of cinema, their performance is also out of your mind like the money you spent on the ticket is now out of your pocket.

Conclusion
On the whole Halla Gulla, is a weak and unimpressive effort from Kamran Akbar Khan. Advertised as Pakistan’s First Solid Entertainer it is neither solid nor much entertainig. After Dekh Magar Pyaar Se (released on 14th August 2015), Halla Gulla is another disappointment. The claimed budget of the film was 5 crore, which is enough to make a quality entertainer, but Halla Gulla has not justified its budget. The film might attract viewership at single screen cinemas, but will surely face a hard time at the multiplexes.

Mohabbat Aag Si – Episode 18 & 19!

Ohkay so, these two episodes of Mohabbat Aag Si were very interesting as they took the story forward seamlessly & gave an insight into what transpired in the past perfectly too. I really like director’s approach here because the way he has tackled the details of the past & merged them with the happenings of the present makes this drama very engaging & forces us to look forward to the upcoming episodes.

The way the story’s being told, I am sure by the end of the drama Rukhsana would be turned into a victim too but I still feel everything that she has done & all the things she is doing have brought her past the stage where she would be forgiven for how she has ruined the lives of so many people. Yes, I do sympathize with her for the fact that she didn’t get married to her first love but then, she seriously has some psychological issues which deterred her from moving on & she locked herself in that very moment where she made it impossible for herself to recover from a heart-break, which by the way, ain’t that big of a deal. I really am interested to see what events turned a day dreamer; a young girl like Ruksana into a villain because as far as we know about her, she was just a girl-next-door whose only motive in life was to get married to the guy she loved but the flashbacks do tell us a story of how she landed herself in deep trouble but I wonder instead of becoming humble & regretful, what made Rukhsana so arrogant that she started playing with people’s lives?

Rukhsana’s Arshad has once again entered her life & the way Rukhsana lost control of herself let us know that she still is very much in love with Arshad & hasn’t not grown out of that connection she once had with him. The day dreamer in Rukhsana is still alive because the way she speaks to her love on the phone, the way she adorns herself & the way she converses with him over a meal showed that it was Arshad who she used to think about because it is pretty clear that Arshad was the one & only person that she has ever loved & she never allowed anyone else to enter her life. Bee Jee is aware of every little detail of Arshad & Rukhsana’s lives that is why she dreaded seeing Rukhsana approaching Arshad so fearlessly. Bee Jee already dreads that Rukhsana will create a whole set of difficulty for herself but Rukhsana doesn’t want to think rationally when it comes to Arshad.

It was interesting to see that as much as Rukhsana loves Arshad, he loves her till date too. He referred to Fareeda as just a wife which was pretty self explanatory that his marital life isn’t as perfect as it may seem. Going by the opinions Arshad’s mother had of Rukhsana, it is obvious that Fareeda was Arshad’s mother choice & he had no say in choosing his life partner because his mother had very high standards & unfortunately Rukhsana didn’t fit the bill perfectly. Another thing that unraveled in this episode was about the girl that Rukhsana met the other day when Saba followed her around; Sidra. Even though initially it was hinted that Sidra isn’t Rukhsana’s daughter, the things she added later on made it a bit fuzzier & it still can’t be said with surety that Sidra isn’t Rukhsana’s biological daughter. The way she decided to let go of Sidra that too at the moment when Arshad showed up shows that Rukhsana needs & wants something as a reminiscence of the past because when Arshad wasn’t around, she was holding onto Sidra & using her to keep her mind diverted but now when she saw her first love, she easily walked out of her fixation with that young child. I am sure Sidra is one of the deepest darkest secrets that are buried in Rukhsana’s heart.

Coming towards Saba’s front, she actually caught me off guard when she spoke to Rukhsana like she was a nobody but then I think she actually underestimated Rukhsana’s prowess of creating lies out of thin-air. The way Ruksana dealt with the whole situation & got herself a chance to blackmail Saba showed that she is one good player & she won’t be easily defeated. It takes a lot of present-mindedness to turn the whole situation around because the secret that Saba picked wasn’t nominal & it was enough to shake the ground for Rukhsana but the way she didn’t even stutter showed that she is very inhumane & has no heart actually because where she should have at least lowered her eyes, she stood still with her head held high claiming that she did nothing wrong!

Even though I really really like Samia’ character, I still find it a teensy bit odd that she has been living in this house for so many years, yet she can’t sense something suspicious about the way Rukhsana behaves. Samia was herself told by Rukhsana that she shouldn’t inform Saba about the room-swap so why couldn’t she put two & two together when Saba was presented in front of everyone? Rukhsana told Sharafat that Saba knew about it but later she herself testified in front of everyone that Saba was unaware of it, so why couldn’t Samia just point it out even before Rukhsana’s announcement? That I am sure would’ve jazzed things up a bit.

I actually feel bad for Shareefa. She is underestimating herself because she thinks her Arshad is way out of her league but the truth is opposite. Arshad ain’t a saint himself because the way he has Rukhsana’s number on his speed-dial shows that he might create some havoc in her life as he already has a faintest idea of what Rukhsana’s upto. Looks like Shareefa’s Arshad will be introduced to Saba in the upcoming episode & I am interested to see what part he has to play in the remaining episodes.

Without a doubt, Iffat Omar has done a phenomenal job in this drama & everyone else has supported the main character perfectly. The new twists & turns have made this drama a treat to watch & I am eagerly waiting to find out more about Rukhsana’s past. For now even though it may seem quite typical that Arshad’s mother didn’t let him get married to Rukhsana, I am sure there are a lot of interesting details that have yet to be unveiled. Please share your thoughts about these episodes of Mohabbat Aag Si.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Sangat – Episode 6

Sangat continues to be very convincing and engaging. The pace of the drama is just right, it isn’t too fast paced but we see some new development in every episode. The fact that the story has been quite unpredictable till now also makes the viewers look forward to what the writer has in store for us next. All the characters in the play are realistic and definitely not the usual stereotypes we see on television all the time. Character development has also been steady which has to be one of the best aspects of this play so far.

The developments in this episode changed a lot of things for almost all the characters in the play and the story has taken a new turn. Until the last episode the viewers were left wondering if Shahwez was indeed feeling guilty or was he only trying to stay close to Ayesha because of his fixation with her. In this episode we found out that he indeed is feeling guilty to the extent that he cannot seem to get close to any other girl now furthermore he really wants to do something to make things right. Taking a big step like talking to someone about what he had done and then going to Ayesha’s house for an apology went to show that he will do anything to get rid of the guilt he is feeling. We also found out more about the relationship between Shahwez and Salma. Shahwez has gone from flirting with this girl to completely ignoring her because he feels that he does not deserve to be loved or to be around another girl. This is the first time in such a drama that we see the perpetrator of the crime feeling guilty like this and trying to set things right. This story is not about whether this man will be punished or not but more about how the aftermath of this tragic incident will effect everyone’s lives.

sngt

Shahwez’s visit to Ayesha’s house has changed everything in her house. Before his visit her mother in law never for a second thought that there could be a man involved in this whole incident. Also, although Adnan has not said anything to Ayesha but he is obviously wondering who this man was. The way he covered up for his wife was very refreshing – definitely not something we see in our dramas every day! Adnan wants this matter to be settled between him and his wife and he does not want his mother to have anything to do with it. The way Ayesha tackled the situation was yet another development which goes to show that Sangat is showing things in a different light. She didn’t feel the need to explain anything to anyone and when she questioned her husband it was yet again a very mature way of dealing with the situation. A part of me felt like Shahwez’s apology to Ayesha has given her some courage to deal with people around her in a different way.

Ayesha’s conversation with the psychiatrist had to be the weakest link of this episode. Nothing that the psychiatrist said sounded like something that was coming from a professional. Ayesha’s answer to her question as to why children will be called by their mother’s name on the day of judgment was very meaningful and touching!

sngt

Sangat is going strong so far. Although Mikaal Zulfiqar’s acting in the play has been unimpressive but he looks good with Saba Qamar and they make a convincing on screen couple. Saba Qamar has been flawless throughout the play and her character has been very easy to connect to. Zahid Ahmed stole the show today with his brilliant portrayal of a man who is looking for some peace of mind. Zahid Ahmed plays the most negative characters in such a way that you can’t help but relate to what is going on in the mind of these characters. Kiran Haq as usual was a breath of fresh air in her brief appearance in tonight’s episode and Samina Ahmed stands out as the mother in law who isn’t perfect but who isn’t exactly negative either – a very realistic character which is likeable even with all its flaws.

The preview of the next episode definitely gave me something to look forward to. How many of you watched this latest episode, do share your thoughts about it.

Fatima Awan

PS: A very Happy Eid to all our lovely visitors and lots of prayers for all the readers out there, stay safe and stay happy.

Action/Crime drama on PTV Home

These days, mostly the subjects of the dramas are mostly related to marriage and its associated issues like doosri shadi, talaq, extra marital affair, saas bahu. No channels has dared to experiment with some different genre like action, crime, thrill, biopic, and dozens other such topics. The reason drama makers put forth is the ratings, that drama is only viewed by the females so they only pick the subjects which are popular in the female audience.

PTV our national channel and runs on public funds and therefore has the luxury to experiment with different genre of dramas. In one such attempt an action/crime drama, will be airing soon on PTV. The play stars Shamoon Abbassi as a police officer and is produced/directed by Mohsin Talat. Mohsin Talat has previously directed many dramas including famous play Aasmanon Pe Likha for Geo Tv.

Here are the teasers of this upcoming drama

Films releasing on Eidul Azha

0

Eidul Azha is a festive occasion in our country. Apart from religious significance it is an event of family gathering and other festivities as well. Traditionally our film makers reserve their premier productions for Eid for which cinema bookings are done months ago. From past two decades local cinema has declined considerably and since 2006 this space is filled by Bollywood movies.

This Eid, a mix of Bollywood (Hindi), Urdu (Karawood, Lollywood), Punjabi and Pashto films are releasing. These films will be released on multiplexes and single screen cinemas across the country.

Bollywood
Any festive occasion without a Bollywood film, is something that seldom happens in Pakistan (like Blue Moon). Due to huge demand of Bollywood films, at-least one Bollywood film is a must release. Only one Bollywood film is releasing this Eidul Azha, like Eidul Fitr. On Eidul Fitr only one Bollywood film Bajrangi Bhaijan was screened, which was allotted the lion’s share in the number of screens to release. The film exceeded all the expectations and has done splendid business and is the most successful film for the year 2015 in Pakistan by earning nearly 22.5 crore (unconfirmed statistics).

1901587_65491532

This year, a Bollywood film named “kis kis se pyar karoon” is releasing. It stars famous Indian comedian Kapil Sharma. Kapil Sharma’s television show is quite popular in Pakistan and the film is expected to do well like any other Bollywood film released in Pakistan.

Urdu Films
A total of three Urdu films are releasing on this Eid produced in Karachi and Lahore

Karawood
Both films produced in Karachi are commercial films of comedy genre. On Eidul Fitr, another comedy film Wrong No, also produced in Karachi proved quite successful. Wrong No. is the most successful Urdu film of the year and so as per unconfirmed reports has earned more than 14 crores.

Both Urdu films produced in Karachi are releasing in multiplexes as well as single screen cinemas.

Punjabi films
Two low budget formula Punjabi films are lined up for this Eidul Azha. Formula Punjabi films have their own dedicated circuit, and normally they recover their cost easily. Like a routine Punjabi formula film both these films are full of similar stuff like violence, steamy dances, loud dialog. Punjabi films are only released in traditional single screen cinemas. The name of the films are Sohna Gujjar (starring Moammar Rana) and Ishq De Qaidi.

Pashto films
Pashto film industry is the most successful and vibrant film circuit of Pakistan. In recent years the number of Pashto films have out numbered the Punjabi and Urdu films. Pashto films have a dedicatd circut in the three provinces i.e. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Charsadda, Noshehra), Balochistan (Quetta only) and Sindh (Karachi only). Apart from Pakistan the Pashto films are also regularly screened in foreign countries Afghanistan (Kabul) and UAE (Dubai).

On Eidul Fitr, five pashto films were released and on Eidul Azha six pashto films will be screened. The famous artists appearing in these films are Arbaz Khan, Shahid Khan, Ajab Gul and Jahangir Jaani.

The name of the pashto films are Malang Pe Dua Rang, Zoe Da sharabi, Badnaam, Tezaab, iqraar, Janaan

Hollywood films

Hollywood films are screened in big urban centres of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad normally in multiplexes. Every multiplex has a dedicated screen equipped with the latest technology like IMAX for such Hollywood films. This Eid two Hollywood films are releasing namely Everest and Dinosaur Island.

Komal Rizvi Thinks Geo’s Morning Show Is Typical And Boring

0

The television viewers criticize Morning Shows all the time too but when a celebrity who has been invited as a guest on a Morning Show does the same then it has a completely different meaning! That would mean that the celebrity is insulting the host in particular who invited him or her to the show.

Komal Rizvi was invited as a guest at the show and after attending the show, this was Komal’s status update:

This statement by Komal shows that she is not a big fan of Morning Shows and she finds them very boring. She also thinks that Geo’s Morning Show has nothing new in it and she found it boring.

Diyar-e-Dil – Episode 28! <3

Ohkay so, shall I say that again? Yes, you guessed it right, I am in loveee with this drama & this episode was equally special. I love love love the way they are showcasing the feelings of all the characters because it makes us connect & relate to them on a very different level. Honestly, to see the ticker of Episode # 28 made my heart sink because it dawned on me that Diyar-e-Dil would be ending soon & I had a little sobbing session too because I just don’t want it to end. :/

So, finally, Moeez Tajjamul Wali ke haathon to nahi lekin Faarah ke haathon zaya ho hi gaya. I couldn’t stop laughing when Faarah was telling Moeez off because one, he deserved it, two, he asked for it & three, it showed how much Faarah’s in love with her husband Wali. All the things that Faarah said to Moeez told the story of how much respect she has for her grandfather & what Wali means to her. I must say I love how the trait of honesty has never been ignored in Faarah’s journey because when her character was introduced, they made sure to let us know that Faarah’s all about being honest & that is why, all the things she said to Moeez were a perfect reminder of that. It takes a lot of courage to accept your faults & even admit your feelings no matter how misleading they were & this is exactly what Faarah did. Without blaming anyone, without looking for excuses & without beating around the bush, she straight away told Moeez that she was never interested in him & didn’t want a relationship of that sort with him too. I think it was very brave of Faarah to accept that she once considered Moeez’s proposal but not anymore because she herself can’t stand the idea of being labeled as someone with a stained character. I loved how Faarah left Moeez speechless & didn’t give him a chance to utter more gibberish because honestly, she has had enough & that is why she reminded him again that she won’t let anyone disrespect Agha Jaan & Wali; her grandfather & her husband. I think Maya Ali was brilliant in that scene because I don’t know why but I feel the love Faarah has for Wali was evident in that scene; through her eyes & her expressions especially, because when she was letting Moeez know that he’s making things difficult for her, it kind of highlighted how eager she is to make things work with her husband, her Wali; the one she loves!

I loved the way Faarah reached out to Agha Jaan for some guidance because after Behroz, it is only Agha Jaan who can comfort her & lead her towards the right path. That whole conversation was written brilliantly where Agha Jaan used his own example to explain what Faarah should do & what approach she must resort to in order to mend her relationship with Wali & Arjumand. The way Agha Jaan put forth his own experience, feelings & his efforts of making things right was a perfect way of explaining things to Faarah. The conversation where Agha Jaan slightly told Arjumand to give Faarah a chance was very intelligent, it went to show that Agha Jaan clearly understood the things that Faarah didn’t even mention because he himself can see how hard she’s been trying to win Arjumand over. I must say I really liked the way Zarmeenay tried to rationalize Faarah’s previous mistakes & behavior in front of her mother as well. Zarmeenay has understood exactly what Wali used to tell her about Faarah that she is under the bad influence of her mother, that is why she is behaving that way & it was very sweet of Zarmeenay to repeat the exact same words because it went to show that she can now relate to what Wali used to say about Faarah before. Even though Arjumand is being a bit too stern but somehow I understand her state of mind. Faarah is the one who caused distress to her beloved son & insulted her father-like Agha Jaan, that is why she is not ready to give her a chance as she accepted Faarah only because of Agha Jaan, Suhaib & Behroz but now when she knows that this is exactly what Faarah demanded, she thinks it’s best to let things be the way they are & she is in no mood to forgive Faarah. I am sure after analyzing the situation herself & after a little push from Agha Jaan, Arjumand will move on but I think she is right in her own accord where she is making it very clear that Faarah has to work hard in order to win her over.

Now talking about the conversation Faarah had with Wali. It was sweet, honest & heartfelt but sadly, the result of that conversation was not what Faarah (& we all) expected. Even though it took a lot for Faarah to muster up the courage & confess that she is ready to give this Nikkah a chance & even though she started off the conversation at a right note, she forgot to add a little detail that she herself has fallen in love with Wali & she wants to stay with him because of ‘him’ & not because of Agha Jaan, Suhaib, Behroz or anyone else. I guess that’s where Wali missed the whole point because he still thinks she wants to stay with him because she now wants to make Agha Jaan happy. I so wish Faarah had straight out told him the truth about how much she respects & loves him but she chose a different approach which Wali misunderstood once again. Wali on his own was right too, he really feels it would be unreasonable & against his dignity to stay married to Faarah when she doesn’t love him & he clearly said what he had on his mind. Wali’s honesty is commendable too, he only wanted Faarah to stay with Agha Jaan & that was the only ulterior motive behind bringing her to the Haveli. Obviously & once again, all the things Wali said to Faarah made her feel even more guilty because she felt bad for misunderstanding him & blaming him for all the things he never was responsible for. I so so so wish Faarah had told him then & there that she has fallen in love with him but I guess they’re saving the best bits for the last. :) It also is so very obvious that Wali still loves his wife; Faarah but he loves her enough to let go of her, for her own happiness & I can’t wait to see how he will realize that she doesn’t love anyone but him!

This episode was packed with a lot of emotions, some very sweet moments & some touching moments too. I can’t emphasize enough on how beautiful & refined Maya Ali looks in Diyar-e-Dil. I think whoever her stylist is; she should hire him/her for the rest of her life because they have done an amazing job on her. Maya Ali herself is really pretty but she has never looked this pretty before. I must say the camera work, the crisp picture quality & screenplay is making Diyar-e-Dil a treat to watch too, I think these are the little details that have given this drama a very unique feel. While watching Diyar-e-Dil, I always feel like a dream is being translated on my screen, it seems so surreal & beautiful. I absolutely love love love this drama & all the characters & actors (a few excluded of course). Osman Khalid Butt has been perfect as Wali & I think no one else could’ve done justice to his character. Hareem Farooq was phenomenal in this episode too because it’s been a while that she got this much screen time, the way she speaks through her expressions is amazing & it shows that she has come a long way in terms of acting too. In my opinion, all the credit goes to the director for bringing out the best in all these actors. Can’t wait for the next episode already & pleaseee share your beautiful thoughts about this beautiful episode of Diyar-e-Dil. :)

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

ps: Wishing you all a very Happy Eid in advance & oh, I just feel like mentioning that I typed this review with Henna-clad hands because…you guys are very special. <3 Have a great Eid! :)

Aitraz Episode 7 – When ARY Uses Big Names To Entice Viewers But Doesn’t Deliver!

Yawn, yawn and yawn!! I have officially given up on this drama after watching this episode. The story is going around in circles; I have no idea where this drama is headed with this constant repetition and I am so not interested in finding out any more too! There has been absolutely no character development since the first episode. Komal remains obsessed with living with her husband only if his mother approves of the idea because making your mother in laws happy is more important than ensuring your own happiness and somehow breaking your husband’s heart and threatening him of divorce is alright too!! The way Komal throws a fit every time Arsalan mentions that his mother is still not happy with their marriage is making me dislike her character even more! I felt for Komal when she remembered her family when she was in her house but even then I fail to connect to her obsession! Arsalan is scared of Komal and his mother like he is a ten year old and Arsalan’s mother is one character I don’t want to see on screen ever again! She is a typical Pakistani saas and there is absolutely nothing fascinating about that!

Like every other episode of Aitraz this one too did not add much to the story except that Komal has started working. The relationship between Komal and Rayna is the only good thing about this play and that too only because of Rayna’s character! I am sick and tired of watching Komal’s sad face right from the first episode. Sana Javed should stop playing the bechari altogether! She has a very cute smile and she knows how to act, I am sure the viewers would like to see her experimenting with the characters more and also with her looks.

a1

Dialogues like “tum achi nahi buhat achi ho” have been done to death, they are so predictable! I hate to say this but after watching 7 episodes of this play I have lost all faith in ARY in particular. Using Imran Abbas and Sania Saeed as a “bait” to make the viewers watch this show was an extremely cheap tactic. It might have worked for ARY this time but it won’t work the next time. The direction of the play is confusing and the story of the play is unimpressive to say the least. It looks like the writer did not put in a lot of thought into writing the script, some of the characters are very clichéd and others are impossible to relate to.

Those of you who missed this episode missed absolutely nothing therefore you shouldn’t waste your precious time tuning into Aitraz this week:)

a2

This is going to be my last review of this play; I gave Aitraz 7 weeks to prove itself but unfortunately it has failed to impress. Is there any drama which you think is worth watching and reviewing? Please give your suggestions in the comments section!

Ayeza Khan Wants To Make Men Cry!

0

Ayeza Khan has some very different plans now that she is going to restart her career. For the longest time Ayeza Khan was seen in dramas as the damsel in distress. She played roles of women who were victimized in some way or the other. Does Ayeza Khan intend to do more such roles when she makes her comeback? While talking to Beautiful You Ayeza Khan gave a very candid interview in which she talked about her future plans.

“When I was offered the role in Pyare Afzal I did not want to do it because it was a different role but when I got such a good response from the viewers I decided I will never play the role of a bechari again. People take me in bechari roles because of my innocent looks but now I want to play the roles of women who make men cry like my character did in Pyare Afzal,” said the actress.

3

She also said, “I am very happy with the response I got when I did Pyare Afzal. People gave that drama more attention than my marriage! When I got married everyone was saying that I betrayed Pyare Afzal. Everyone was saying Ayeza does not look good with Danish Taimoor. I warned Danish that such comments were going to come when we get married so he should be ready for it.”

6

Ayeza Khan in a very candid mood said, “When we got married everyone was saying that now they will make the most of this marriage by minting money out of it and they won’t have any kids anytime soon. I read all these comments on facebook and especially my facebook page. I check my fan page regularly.”

5

Ayeza Khan’s next interview for the Lux Style Awards 2015 is due soon too.

Review

Manto is intense, gripping, sincere, soul-stirring, deep and unforgettable. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat and Shahid Nadeem have pleaded Manto’s case with the utmost clarity and honesty. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat wanted this film to ‘disturb’ the audience and I must say that those people who were not expecting this film to be this intense were truly disturbed by the experience. I, on the other hand did not expect a film based on Manto’s life and work to be like any other commercial film therefore I was impressed to watch a very well put together introduction to Manto’s writings, why he was not like many other people and writers of his time, an insightful glimpse into his family life and also a deeper understanding of the main motivation behind Manto’s writings. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has definitely made me understand Manto and after watching the film I am convinced that Manto was just as flawed and as much of a human as anyone else but he was not a hypocrite. He was misunderstood and under appreciated and because he was a very sensitive and expressive person therefore all the ‘shocks’ he was subjected to in life from his childhood till his death were reflected in his writings. The film shows that Manto’s writings were an outcome of his deprivations and the frustrations he faced when people exploited him and others.

The first half of the film is not as intense as the second half. Manto’s sense of humor, his ties with Noor Jahan and the time he spends with his family gives you some light moments and introduces you to Manto as a person. Manto’s conversations with his alter ego at the end of the film however were the highlight of the film for me. That is where the writer and the director conclude the message of the film beautifully. Manto’s alter ego (played brilliantly by Nimra Bucha) proves to be the main driving force behind his writings apart from his real life experiences. People criticize Manto for being a pervert but the truth is that everything that he has written is not fiction but it is an outcome of his own personal experiences with people.

manto

The film starts right after partition of the subcontinent therefore all of Manto’s writings at that point are heavily influenced by what he saw during the course of partition. The atrocities he witnesses jolted him completely; being a very receptive person he failed to forget everything he witnessed and as a result he ended up in the mental asylum. When the authorities of the asylum saw him as a ‘threat’ they decided to discharge him. Manto’s story couldn’t have been told in a more fitting manner. His admission that he did indeed feed the poisonous snake which ruined him in the end and his last words about himself went to show that Manto did not believe in lying to please anyone – not even his own self! He did not want to justify his drinking or smoking but he did want the world to understand that his writings were not what they were made out to be. The film makes you wonder what ‘normal’ really is!! There are times when Manto’s friends in the mental asylum seem more normal than the people in outside world who believe in exploiting a man who is desperate to save his daughter’s life!

All of Manto’s stories which have been narrated in the film have been translated on screen in an impeccable manner. Every single narrative is touching and different from the other. Most of them focus on men and women’s relationships with each other and how society perceives women. There is a good reason why it took Sarmad Khoosat two years to edit this film – Manto covers every aspect of Manto’s life.

manto1

Manto is a very bold film which you should watch only if you are willing to be ‘disturbed’. It is a beautifully penned down film with some remarkable performances, a stellar cast, flawless direction and it won’t fade away from your memory once you leave the cinema hall. It will make you want to know more about Manto – which basically means that Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has managed to achieve what he worked so hard to accomplish. Although this film has a very long list of cast, all of whom did complete justice to their respective characters but Manto and his alter ego along with his wife Safia (Sania Saeed) had more of an impact on me than any other character. The film would’ve been picture perfect if it was cut short especially in the end. The conversations between Manto and his alter ego were definitely a treat to hear and watch but there were some parts like Manto’s stay in the hospital and perhaps some time with his friends that could have been chopped down.

Overall Manto is pure genius; it deserves to be watched over and over again. All the songs in the film have been beautifully sung and composed and have some relevance or the other to the happenings in the film. All these songs are a tribute to some of the most admired poets in Urdu literature. This film was definitely worth the wait!

manto2

I must applaud the producers and Geo Films in particular for investing in a project like Manto and for giving Sarmad Sultan Khoosat the time he needed to finalize this masterpiece. The wardrobe, make-up and the direction of the film takes you back to the 1950s and you can’t help but see the actors you have been watching on screen for such a long time in a very different light. It was refreshing to see new child stars playing the role of Manto’s daughters. Sania Saeed’s effortless portrayal of a brave woman who stood by her man but never really understood him is absolutely brilliant. Nimra Bucha outshines as Manto’s alter ego which keeps on motivating him to get up and write! Arjumand Rahim makes a big impact although her character gets very little screen time. No one could have played Noor Jahan’s character better than Saba Qamar. Sarmad Sultan Khoosat has brought Manto to life on the big screen in a way that leaves you feeling for him more than anything else; he owns the character all through the film.

On a side note it was wonderful to see jam packed hall even 10 days after the film was screened in the cinema. The fact that the national anthem of Pakistan was played before the film started and everyone in the hall stood up in respect added to the charm of watching a Pakistani film in the cinema. However, it was odd to see children in the cinema hall and when the film ended there were few who were complaining that the film was depressing and they would have much rather watched a comedy!! So yes, do not tag your ten year old with you if you go to watch this film and it is not a comedy movie;)) Watch Manto for Manto; he tells his story in a way that will make you connect to his character without even trying and rest assured his story deserves to be heard!

Mol – Episode 16

If I were to pick one play that’s been the toughest to review out of all the dramas I have reviewed to date, I think I’d pick Mol, and that’s because the characters are so complex that it is difficult to make sense of their actions. Normally, complex characters are fascinating as they continue to intrigue the viewers. But, in this case, Emaan’s character is complex in a way that’s far from interesting – it’s just complicated.

Imtiaz Sahab had to talk his daughter out of her decision and he did just that. About the confrontation between Emaan and her parents, I have to be honest here – I didn’t quite get the part where Emaan explained the rationale behind her demanding a divorce. It is after Imtiaz Sahab’s emotional blackmailing that Emaan ‘decided’ that since she can’t leave Sheheryaar, she should get him married to Sajal; the talaaq ka mutalba is a thing of past now and the real deal here is Sajal and Sheheryaar’s shaadi. The conversation between Emaan and Sajal was supposed to answer our questions and clarify why Emaan wants Sheheryaar and Sajal to get married, but it didn’t feel convincing – it just left me confused and utterly disappointed. Yeh tou khudgharzi hui na, kay mein sirf apni wajah say, Sheheryaar say juray har rishtay ko dukh deti rahun. The previous episodes have only emphasized the fact that Emaan is crazy about Shahnaam and that she’d do whatever it takes to be with him, but in this episode, we are expected to believe that everything Emaan was doing all this while was because she ‘loves’ Sheheryaar too much to see his loved ones suffer? Sheheryaar’s family needs a waaris and since she can’t provide them with one, she wants Sheheryaar to marry Sajal. I think by now by we are perfectly aware of the fact that Sheheryaar and his family never see eye to eye, but Emaan is certain that ‘jald ya dair say, Sheheryaar ka faisla wohi hoga jo un ki family ka hai.’ This doesn’t even make sense! I have seen quite a few plays where the infertile first wife asks her husband to go ahead with dusri shadi for the sake of a waaris, so if that’s how Mol was supposed to shape up, why did we have to put up with the ‘mujhe talaaq chahye’ fiasco? The way Emaan’s prospective sautan puts it,‘Sheheryaar bohat lucky hain kay un ko tum jesi biwi mili hai.’ Now we are supposed to praise Emaan for being an awfully selfless and self-sacrificing wife. Great. I’m impressed.

Jora badalne ki baat mat karna kyunke yeh humari khandaani riwayat hai! Does it look like this is coming from the suited and booted man of the house? Humayun Aunty, there’s no hope for you! I know it will sound weird but for some strange reason, I kinda pity Sheheryaar’s family – becharay khud hi jora dhoondte hain, khud hi tayaar hotay hain, khud hi anghooti pehnatay hain, khud hi mubarakbaad exchange kartay hain, aur phir khud hi apna sa mun lekar rehjatay hain. Poor souls. If Sajal does feel that she’s being treated like a ‘grocery item’, I’d have to ask her why does she allow her family to treat her this way over and over again? It sure seems like she was simply waiting for Emaan to give her the green light and once she was assured that Emaan wants her to marry Sheheryaar, she decided to give the nod. Can she take a decision on her own and stick to it without letting Emaan or Zareena or anyone else for that matter talk her out of it?

Muhabbat aur jang mein sab jaiz hota hai. Yeh jang nahe, muhabbat hai. Is it just me or Sheheryaar actually conveyed a lot by saying this? I would have liked Emaan to realize that she does hold a special place in Sheheryaar’s heart and that he does love her, but much to my dismay, what followed next was: kaash Sheheryaar aap mujh se muhabbat karte tou shayad mein itni kamzor na parti.

I’d like to hear more about how you guys make sense of the conversation between Emaan and her parents. What do you guys think about the latest episode of Mol? Feel free to voice your views.
