Pakistani Actors are constantly striving hard to stay in the limelight. This is especially important if they aim to revive their careers steadily. In showbiz you are as relevant as your last hit project thus all the artists try to give as many hit dramas as possible. We often see good actors compromising on scripts and picking up masala stories just so they remain relevant; this is all part of the game.
Though there is a list of A-listers who get offered all the best work and thus remain on the top of the hit list, sometimes luck does not work and good actors end up doing a string of dramas that do not get high ratings or viewership for several reasons. Sami Khan is a star who has managed to remain on top despite being in the industry for many years. He has done many projects in the last two years but none of them were top scorers. Sami Khan was recently seen in Pagal Khana and Ek Chubhan Si but these are not what can be called as big hits. He will soon be seen in Dunyapur and it may give Sami a big hit as the drama has a promising cast and team.
Imran Ashraf
Imran Ashraf is a versatile actor. He has struggled a lot to reach the top of the game. He became anhousehold name after his drama Ranjha Ranjha Kardi became a hit. He went on to do some great dramas like Inkaar and Raqs e Bismil after that. Imran is seen as Mazaq Raat’s host nowadays. His last drama with Sarah Khan, Namak Haram turned out to be a disappointment for many with many loopholes, a rushed and unnecessary ending and a lot of drag. It received decent viewership but it was not a big hit in any way. Imran’s fans are waiting on a stronger comeback now and let’s see what he comes up with next.
Sarah Khan
Sarah Khan is one of the top actresses of Pakistan. She has established herself as a star who people keep high expectations from. The star however has not given a big commercial hit for some time now. She was seen in Wabaal and then we saw her in Namak Haram. People had high expectations from Namak Haram as it was her comeback with her Raqs e Bismil co-star but the drama did not work. She is doing fine but a big hit will be nice for the star and it may come next with her upcoming drama Shair where she is starring with Danish Taimoor.
Farhan Saeed
Farhan Saeed is not just an actor but also one of the top singers in the country. He focuses on both the parts of his career and he also welcomed his baby daughter this year. After giving a semi-hit with Jhok Sarkar, Farhan is focusing more on the OTT and film side. He is currently working for a webseries on Tapmad and a film opposite Mamya Shajaffar but he has not given us a mega hit after Mere Humsafar. His current drama Kaisi Hai Ye Ruswai on Express TV is also meh and it is not getting a lot of attention.
Ahmed Ali Akbar
Ahmed Ali Akbar is a an actor par excellence. He has never really cared about huge commercial success and he has only picked scripts that he felt good about. His films Laal Kabootar and Gunjal and his dramas Parizaad and Idiot are a testament to how good an eye he has for a good script. He is also cast in Selahuddin Eyyubi but we are hoping to see the star in a big commercial drama in Pakistan which will be a moment of happiness for his fans.
Ahad Raza Mir
Ahad Raza Mir has been away from Pakistani television for some time now. His last drama which was a hit was a Ramadan play Hum Tum. He has been focusing more on his international projects and now he will be seen in Netflix’s Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo as the main character which will definitely be a hit but the actor needs to work in a good television drama with reach to common Pakistani masses. His fans are waiting for him to pick something but he has not done it yet.
Ramsha Khan
Ramsha Khan last gave a critically acclaimed performance in the drama Jannat Se Aagay. She has made some great choices in her career until now but her fans want to see her in a commercially successful project. She is all set to appear in Green TV’s mega project Dunyapur with Khushhal Khan and fans have high hopes that it will bring Ramsha back to the forefront.
Hareem Farooq
Hareem Farooq is another good actress who likes to take on different characters. Her performance in Diyar e Dil is still loved by millions. You find yourself feeling for Zimal even when her actions and decisions frustrate you. So, it would not be wrong to say even when the script fails, Mawra’s performance saves the day.

There are very few dramas that entertain and educate at the same time. Most of the time while making dramas about social issues, entertainment takes a back seat. There are also those instances when writers fail to do justice to the main theme of the drama. Marital issues are a favorite among Pakistani writers and while writing a story surrounding them sometimes the writers fail to add a useful takeaway to the story. It is also common for issue-based dramas, in particular, to go off track. Nand has some stereotypes, the title of the drama being the first one! The way nands are perceived in our society is a well-known fact and in a way, this drama endorses the stereotype. The great thing about this drama is that through this singular character and representation, Nand has shown all the young married girls out there how to tackle the issues they might face right after getting married.
Most of the Pakistani dramas present problems but usually, the solution is left for the last two episodes. This ‘solution’ most often is either revenge or a last-minute ‘happy ending’. Nand has done exceptionally well in avoiding such solutions and has actually presented a great comparison between different people to show what works and what doesn’t. Many people might not have tuned into this drama because the title and the first impression from the teasers suggested that this drama has nothing grand to offer. Men Should Maintain The Balance
The most important lesson in drama serial Nand is for men. Usually, our dramas focus more on teaching girls how to make marriage work therefore it is good to finally watch a drama which clearly shows the role of men in dramas. Saqib and Rabi’s entire track was the perfect example of how marriages are destroyed if men fail to maintain the balance. Right from the beginning, Saqib’s entire focus was on making his aapi happy and Rabi did not stand a chance. Had he maintained the balance between his sister and wife things wouldn’t have gone in the direction they went. All the men who are watching this serial should definitely a thing or two from Hassan who has managed to maintain this balance and can see things clearly.
Trust Your Partner and Give Them Respect
Most of the time in our society, the burden of making a marriage work is laid completely on the woman. Drama serial Nand has intelligent and in an entertaining way shown how important it is for men to trust their wives. Many other dramas have shown such incidents where husbands wrongfully accuse their wives because of someone’s plotting. What makes Nand different is that Saqib and Rabi’s marriage ended because of the lack of trust and respect. The viewers feel this loss while watching the drama because Rabi tried her best to make the marriage work.
Saqib never gave Rabi the kind of respect she deserved. She was continuously asked to compromise on many things including her dignity. By the time he realized his mistake, it was too late. It is however good that the writer has shown how Saqib is using his experiences to make life easier for Hassan. Gohar is another such example, a woman who does not give her husband an ounce of respect. She is so sure that Jahangir will never leave her and therefore takes him for granted.
Do Not Put Up With Emotional Abuse
Rabi put up with emotional abuse thinking that it will help her marriage. We are happy that the writer showed clearly that putting up with abuse is never fruitful. By Showing Farwa’s example, the writer drew a contrast. Farwa does not put up with abuse which is the reason why she gets more respect than Rabi. Hassan’s support makes a big difference too but Farwa’s nature also is such that she would rather walk out of this marriage than put up with abuse. Farwa and Hassan both are not willing to put up with Gohar’s irrational behavior which makes her feel completely helpless. Saqib has finally realized where he went wrong and he also gives the newly-weds the support they need.
By introducing Farwa’s character the writer has intelligently shown the dos with the don’ts which really puts things into perspective for the viewers. There are no grey areas there, the message is loud and clear. Not even remotely has the writer suggested that compromising when you are being emotionally abused is a wise choice. Another example in the drama is Jahangir who puts up with more emotional abuse than any other character in the drama. While Rabi is out of the toxic relationship she was in, Jahangir has still not been able to break free from it. She has hardly ever given Gohar a much-needed reality check.
Raise Your Girls To Question Things
Farwa’s upbringing is completely different from that of Rabi. Although Rabi’s brother was also really supportive of her he raised her differently. She was never the kind of girl who would question things but was more than okay with taking orders. Most of the time parents are afraid that their daughters might not be able to compromise and lead a happy life if they have a strong personality. The writer of Nand has done the right thing by giving the viewers a role model who questions things constantly and is not confused about her rights.
Learn From Other People’s Mistakes
Hassan has learned from his brother’s mistakes and whatever he learned played an important role in making his marriage work so far. He could see where his brother and aapi were going wrong. He tried to make Saqib understand what Gohar was doing but he never listened to her. Farwa has also drawn certain conclusions from the mistakes Rabi made which is why she was more prepared to deal with what was coming her way. It is always better to enter a relationship knowing exactly what is coming your way and observation is the key. Sometimes a third person’s observation can be a learning experience for them.
Value What/Who You Have While You Have It
Saqib lost Rabi because he did not value her. Had he given her the love and status she deserved, he wouldn’t have made such a hasty decision by coming under pressure. The same is the case with Gohar who has a wonderful husband and mother-in-law but she is constantly seen complaining. She treats her husband with no respect and it is highly likely that she will lose him at some point. Even though her brothers were always so loving and supportive, she did not value them the way they deserved but tried to run their lives for them. Gohar eventually lost the respect and love her brothers had for her and very soon she will lose everything else too.
Stop Controlling People
Gohar is one of those few negative characters which actually show how toxic some negative traits can be. You get to see Gohar getting frustrated and angry even though she has so much to be thankful for. The only reason for all her worries is that she is always trying to control everyone around her. She could have lived an easy and content life if she wasn’t so controlling all the time. We are sure that all such people out there self-reflect a little while watching this drama!
You Are a Role Model For Your Children
Nand’s writer has intelligently woven another important lesson in the drama by showing how Umar has started stealing and lying because that is all his mother does. While Gohar is so busy trying to fool and sabotage her own family members, she does not have the time to see how all this is affecting her son. It is true that kids are very observant and they learn fast! Umar is learning how to be manipulative and have his own way because that is all his mother does. He started stealing the day he realized his mother was doing the same. Since Gohar tried to justify her actions in front of Umar, he thinks it is okay to lie and steal.
Parents Have an Important Role To Play
Apart from Gohar’s bad parenting skills, the viewers also see how poorly Gohar’s mother manages everything. Had she been an actual mother who tried to correct her daughter instead of needlessly spoiling her, Gohar wouldn’t have turned out to be such a big monster! She also raised her sons to follow Gohar’s lead instead of telling them wrong from right. Had this mother done her part well, things would have been different for all these characters.
Support Your Daughters Only When Needed
We have seen a positive character such as that of Rabi’s brother who extended support to his sister every time she needed it but then we also have Gohar’s mother and even Saqib’s characters who needlessly supported Gohar. It was because of this support that she had the guts to leave her house even when her husband and mother-in-law tried so hard to please her. Gohar knew that her brothers and mother will lend their support unconditionally and she exploited this. The writer has shown through all this that daughters need the right kind of support and not the kind which would spoil them and their lives. Farwa’s parents are another good example of the right kind of support.

In fact, many of the writers nowadays rely more on the negativity of these heroines than their positive nature. Most often, the writers through these stories try to ‘educate’ people. Therefore showing these heroines in a negative light is in a way a means to an end. The top actresses of the industry take up such roles and most often such dramas are really popular. It won’t be wrong to say that many people love these negative heroines just as much as they do the ones who are victimized. Most of the viewers like black and white characters which is why all the dramas with such heroines were a massive hit.
A Hit Formula
Out of many formulas that have been working really well for the producers, a greedy heroine who is also extremely selfish is one that works like a charm every time. Although the viewers hate these heroines, they also get hooked to such dramas. All these heroines have certain characteristics which have remained the same over the years. The situations they find themselves in and most often even the ending is the same. Yet, this formula works every single time. Mere Khawab Reza Reza was the first drama that revolved around a woman who dreamt of making it big someday and in order to do so she left her loving husband. Maat was another drama that had a central female character that leaves her husband for his rich friend. Every other drama which has been written on these lines has had more or less the same story. Even though we have come so far but these greedy heroines stay more or less the same.
Showing Contrast
Usually, the premise of such stories rests on showing opposite characters. If the woman is greedy and selfish, either her man is the ideal husband or she has a friend or a sister who is completely opposite. This pattern has been followed in all these dramas in some way or the other. Some of the actresses who played such negative roles actually did so well that they stood out more than the ‘good heroines’ opposite them. Others were either annoying or simply unbelievable. A great deal depends on how the character is written and how well it is translated on screen. If greed is the only characteristic of such heroines that stands out and the supporting characters are shown as enablers then such a story has no appeal. It is also equally important to show a proper background to such a character so that the viewers know the reasons behind their greedy nature.

Anji – Ghar Titli Ka Par
Ghar Titli Ka Par was one of the most popular dramas of recent times. The writers followed the formula mentioned. Anji was a greedy and selfish girl who wasn’t well off but she dreamed of getting rich. She started off by making boyfriends and getting them to buy expensive gifts for her. When she got married to a man who was better financially than her, she wished she had more money. Eventually, she left this man for a richer man who also happened to be her friend’s husband. Anji’s character did not have a single positive trait. It was however a character that amused the viewers mainly because of the treatment given to it by Sanam Chaudhry.
Sehar – Beqasoor
Beqasoor had more than one leading lady and these heroines offered ‘variety’! Sehar was the greediest of them all who married a rich man her father’s age because he was rich. Just like all the other heroines on this list, Sehar was introduced as someone who had a problem with her financial status and was bent on marrying someone who would make her rich. Like all other such stories, Sehar’s sister was completely her opposite. While her sister was shown as the ultimate victim, Sehar was shown as the greedy girl who learns her lesson the hard way. Aiman Khan outshone in this negative role and sometimes Sehar’s negativity was more entertaining than all the other tracks in the story.
Maleka – Uraan
Uraan is currently on air and it is getting the highest ratings right now. This drama also has a female lead who hates her present status and dreams of getting rich someday. She is so attracted to wealth that she rejected the man who she fell in love with because she thought he was rich, once she found out that he lied about his financial status. Like most of the heroines on this list, Maleka also does not value the man who loves her with all his heart because he is not rich. Although this is a new drama it also has a heroine who has a lot in common with all the other greedy heroines. Kinza Hashmi has played a similar character in Ishq Tamasha but this time around too her performance is quite impressive even though the role is not new.
Mehwish – Mere Pass Tum Ho
Mere Pass Tum Ho was another blockbuster that gave a filmi spin to a story that the viewers have seen a thousand times before. Mehwish has to be one of the most unforgettable greedy heroines who left her doting husband for a rich man but ended up all alone. Mehwish’s infidelity was shown more openly in this drama than in any other. This character however had layers but her greedy nature took over all the other aspects of her personality. She wanted to be rich and was attracted to material things right from the start. This greed made her value money more than her relationships. Ayeza Khan faced a lot of criticism for playing this character even though she kept on explaining why she decided to do it.
Naila – Titlee
Naila from Titlee was also beautiful as well as greedy and selfish. Being greedy was one of the few characteristics of her personality. Although she married a rich man he was not good looking enough for her standards. Eventually, she left him for another man who was better looking than he was rich and ended up living a miserable life. Naila’s journey was covered convincingly and as far as greedy heroines go, she was a well-etched-out character. Hania Aamir played this role brilliantly perhaps that is why she was offered another similar role in Dil Ruba.
Nirma – Jhooti
Nirma was the most annoying and poorly written character on this list. Iqra Aziz’s overacting made it even worse. Nirma’s story was even more unconvincing because she was surrounded by foolish characters that fell for her lies. Nirma’s story was filled with negativity and unlike some of the other greedy heroines on this list; her story was not entertaining in any way. The drama was a hit nevertheless among the general public.
Sanam – Dil Ruba
Sanam was a lot like Rushna and Maleka from Uraan. She belonged to a middle-class household and was attracted to wealth. Her journey started with making boyfriends and using them to get what she wanted. She was equally shallow when it came to how her dream man would look like. Another pretty and greedy heroine who ultimately paid for her mistakes but in the end was made to look like an antihero. Her story was typical and unappealing but the ending was the worst. Unlike other greedy heroines’ stories, this one did not even have a lesson!
Sila – Khasara
Khasara was another story revolving around a woman; wife and mother who wasn’t happy with her life because her husband was not rich. In this story also there was a rich, handsome, and exploitative married man who Sila falls for and ultimately regrets her decision. Sila’s husband was just as perfect as some of the other husbands of the greedy heroines on this list. This drama was inspired a little too much by Mere Khawab Reza Reza, it could easily have been a remake!
Rushna – Ishq Tamasha
Rushna from Ishq Tamasha was another crazy mix of a beautiful girl who wants to marry a rich and handsome man. Although, she wasn’t shown looking actively for a man, once she fell in love with the man of her dreams her character stopped making sense. Rushna’s character however wasn’t so negative when the story started. Also, the man she got married to wasn’t perfect. This was a story with some innovation but it had too many complications and the worst ending.
Ulfat – Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida
Ulfat literally has put all these greedy women to shame by making her dream to become rich come true by selling her husband to another woman. Ulfat is a confusing mix of greedy and foolish. The writer has tried to justify her actions by showing her as someone who cannot think beyond her wishes. Also, the drama has a serious story but a filmi feel; everything is over-dramatic including the performances. Sonya Hussyn’s acting has remained over-the-top but now the writer is making a victim out of her character. This is however another drama which this theme that has topped the rating charts!!
