I have a very close friend whose husband called me and said, ‘Hiba, we will be having a divorce only because of her jealous or competitive nature. Whenever she sees expensive items with others, she comes to me and demands them — for example, a car or a jewellery set. She taunts me, saying I can’t buy them for her. Talking about divorce, Hiba Ali said, “For me it was always unplanned. I always wanted to live with my husband because he was father of my son. I wanted to live with understanding. He was a good person. We lacked understanding in basic matters. He was educated and I was a sensible girl, we couldn’t fight daily on trivial things. We decided divorce on a dinner table. Yes, I got shocked after the custody case, he used to think that I made our son distant from him because obviously he was in Canada. It was our kid’s own choice to talk to father or not however we compromised on the custody case outside the court as I didn’t want to give up. I said him that he’s only going to waste his money. I think, I made a mistake of getting into marriage or I should have not taken divorce”.

Talking about dealing with depression, Hiba Ali said that depression is for real and people should be understanding towards depression patients. She said, “We are bearing it, people who are suffering from depression commit suicide. At least, appreciate people who are dealing with it. I know people here think that depression patients are talking about it for attention seeking or taking some kind of mileage or benefit but it is not the case”. Showbiz is called a short-lived career, mainly for main stream actors as timeline for performing leading roles is relatively limited. There is no definite set duration how long one can perform in main roles, it depends upon popularity, market value and how fit a person maintains himself/herself in front of camera.
Generally career of main stream female actors is short if compared to male actors who enjoy a relatively longer run in leading roles. This trend is almost universally followed, where male actors rule for a longer period as compared to female actors. Many male actors keep appearing in lead roles in middle and old age some time even with much younger female lead.
Speaking of Pakistani showbiz scene the trend is also followed here where life time of heroes is much longer then heroines. In urdu films the prime example is Nadeem who started his career in mid 60’s and appeared as a hero in films till late 90’s with much younger female actors like Attiqa Odho, Madiha Shah, Neeli and Zeba Bakhtiyar. Whereas with some exceptions, career of heroines were relatively short. Similarly, Sultan Rahi in Punjabi cinema and Badar Munir in Pashto cinema have appeared for decades as heroes.
Television in Pakistan has not been as vibrant as film industry was for quite long, but from past seven eight years television has emerged as a flourishing industry, providing opportunities to many new actors. With increase in drama productions, many actors have established themselves in leading roles. A look at leading performers, reveal that similar trend for male actors also prevails in our television too. Many of the leading male performers are continuously coming in lead roles for almost twenty years or even more than that. Lets look at the careers of some leading male actors who fall in this category and still appearing in young roles opposite much younger female artists.
Faisal Rehman: has started his career in 1980 from film Nahin Abhi Nahin, where he was paired with Shabnam and Aarzoo. Faisal appeared in many films throughout 1980’s and then took a break from acting. In films he was mostly paired with Baabra Sharif. He is coming in leading roles in many dramas since early 2000 in leading roles opposite Ayesha Khan, Sunita Marshal, Sajal Ali.
Waseem Abbas: is coming in films and dramas from early 1980’s. His films were not much successful but he was a popular television actor. He still appears in secondary lead roles opposite much younger female artists like Aamana Sheikh in Mera Sayen 2 and Yasira Rizvi in Man Ke Moti.
Nauman Ejaz: has started his career in late 1980’s (1988-1989) from films and television. In films he appeared in side roles and went unnoticed whereas on television he had some successful dramas relatively early. Though Nauman never mentions he has worked in films. In his earlier dramas he appeared opposite Saba Hameed (Pat Jhar on PTV) and Samina Peerzada (Sophia on PTV). While Nauman is still appearing in lead roles, recently both Saba Hameed (Qarz on ARY) and Samina Peerzada (Rehaai, Durre Shewaar on HUM TV) have appeared in roles of mother of Nauman Ejaz. Some other female actors who appeared opposite Nauman in 90’s were Attiqa Odho, Seemi Zaidi, Fazila Qaazi, Iffat Omar, Maria Waasti, Savera Nadeem, most of which have now either quit acting or appearing in character roles. But Nauman is still a popular choice in lead roles.
Asad Malik: also started his career from films in 1990, and then appeared on television after not much success in films. Asad Malik break through role was in drama Dasht in 1993 as a Baloch Sardar opposite Fazila Qaazi. Asad Malik also appears in lead roles or secondary lead like in Maat on Hum TV opposite Saba Qamar.
Aijaz Aslam: started his career from commercial and print modeling in early 1990’s. His famous ad was of a shaving cream. His first drama was Kashkol in 1994, where he was paired with Seemi Zaidi and Seema Rizvi.Kashkol was a successful drama and Aijaz enjoyed overnight fame in the role of Roshu. Aijaz has recently performed in a main role in Geo TV drama ‘Kiss Din Mera Wyah Howay Ga’ opposite Aiman Tariq and in ARY TV drama parchaiyan opposite Sana Khan.
Faysal Qureshi: started his career from films in early 1990’s. His first films Nangay Paon, Panah, Saza all were released in first half of 1990’s, neither of which were succesful. Faysal rose to prominence from television drama ‘Boota from toba tek singh’ in second half of 1990’s, in which he was paired with Farah Shah and Mishi Khaan. Since then Faysal is consistently appearing in lead roles till now.
Adnan Sidiqi: started his career from modeling in early 1990’s. His first major role was in drama Uroosa in 1992, opposite Mishi Khaan. Adnan is still coming in leading roles, like in Maat on HUM TV opposite Saba Qamar.

Mir Hadi (Khaani):
Mir Hadi is the talk of the town these days. With thousands swooning on his good looks and what they call as “hypermasculine” behaviour, he has become the most loved hero for the on-going season. But let us get to what Mi Hadi really is. He is a psychiatric patient who needs desperate measures to control and treat his obsessive nature. Mir Hadi is a product of bad upbringing, he is a selfish person indulged in superiority complex and if these things were not enough, he is a KILLER! He killed an innocent boy and then started harassing his family, more specifically the victim’s young sister. And well after all these character flaws which should have been famous but for getting hate, people are drooling.
Zaroon Junaid (Zindagi Gulzar Hai):
I have also done this! I accept! I liked him when the drama was on-air, though he was not my favourite character in the whole drama, I still liked him. Zindagi Gulzar Hai is a project which can be watched again and again, all thanks to its beautiful storyline and intelligent execution. So, upon rewatching it I realized that Waseem Abbas’s and his wife’s character were not the only ones I should cringe over. Zaroon was among the worse too. He was judgmental and a huge attention seeker. He could not accept the fact that Kashaf was a better student than him nor he could digest that she just does not want to be his fan. He bad mouthed her in front of everyone. He was a huge hypocrite too. He liked a girl who dressed in a bit of revealing attires as his girlfriend but did not want his wife, fiancé and sister to do the same. He was sneaky as hell and pried over his wife’s mail. Not to forget he didn’t even care about his pregnant wife’s feelings and insecurities and waited for her to apologize.
Aliyan (Aasmano Pe Likha):
People fell in love with Shehryar Munawar’s character in Aasmano Pe Likha. And the reason behind this was, yes! You guessed it right! Shehryar is handsome because there is no other explanation for his character to become a heart-throb. Aliyan was a confused boy who could not make any decisions. He was always fed bad things about his mother which he kept believing on. He could not divorce his first wife and kept on being a babyface about addressing all important issues. But he still became quite likeable during his reign.
Ashar Hussain (Humsafar):
He is the undisputed king of the land of heartthrobs. The fame and love gotten by this character are unparalleled by any other. Ashar is still the most favourite hero of many drama watchers. But Ashar honestly was so bad; he should have fallen into the worst hero lists of everyone. He got married to his cousin on his own will, she was not strangling him to say yes but later treated her like a nobody. He knew Sara’s feelings about him and still kept giving her signals, his cousins and best friends’ theory was so out of the world. And lastly, he never asked his wife what happened in the whole mummy aap kya keh rahi hain scenario which was absurd.
These are the lead characters that got immense love from the audiences but imagine them as real-life human beings and you will end up judging yourself for liking them. Most of these dramas however are really the best and this shows that pretty boys can get away with many things.

I went into the Lux office and I said show me the audit they get from Price water house. Can you imagine all that? Even before this, I used to be like ‘are you sure about this’? ‘can you give it to someone else?'”
