Baba Jani Last Episode Story Review – Realizations & Apologies

A happy ending is always satisfying especially when it is well-deserved. Asfand’s character was the highlight of this drama throughout and this episode too belonged to him entirely. This episode however was not executed perfectly. Faiza Iftikhar always explores love from different dimensions and this time around too she did just that. We live in a society in which many men face the situations Asfand faced in this drama but there are hardly any dramas which tell the story from the man’s perspective. Apart from a hero who was a role model in so many ways, Baba Jani also showed how controlling relationships and women who find it difficult to trust their brothers and husbands make their job even more difficult. Like all of Faiza Iftikhar’s main protagonists Asfand too never asked for the viewers’ sympathy but you couldn’t help but feel for him. There were some serious editing mistakes in this episode and there were continuity bloopers as well but the dialogues and situations were completely in line with the central message of the drama.

Asfand’s Emotional Outburst

Watching Asfand wanting to give up for a change made his character easier to connect to and definitely more human. This scene however was followed by Naila entering the house and Najiba following her, which did not make a lot of sense. For once, Asfand should have been given the time to recover from the emotional outburst before he was shown consoling Naila. Nimra’s role tonight was commendable and just like always Asfand and Nimra’s scenes together were emotional. Although Asfand was an ideal man in many ways but his sensitive nature and the failure to put his foot down when he needed to, gave his character the kind of flaws which made it more relatable. A great deal happened in this episode and it was the kind of last episode in which all the realizations and apologies come at the very end. It was however good to see Asfand getting the love he gave for all these years being returned back in the manner he truly deserved. It was also great watching him confronting Najiba for a change.

Baba Jani Last Episode Story Review - Realizations & Apologies

Saba Hameed made it incredibly easy for me to believe in Najiba’s guilt and changed behavior. Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam’s performances coupled with the way their characters were written made their scenes an absolute treat to watch throughout. In fact, I wanted to watch more of Nimra with her Baba Jani. Savera Nadeem and Faysal Qureshi’s on-screen chemistry and the relationship these two shared was heart-warming. Mehwish was like another test for Asfand and there were times when you felt that Asfand deserved better. Saba Hameed’s performance too never faltered even though Najiba got excessive screen time. Watching Afshan Qureshi in a balanced, positive role was definitely refreshing since most often she is seen playing negative roles.

Overall Impression

Although, the last few episodes were not too impressive and this last episode too wasn’t edited and directed perfectly but Baba Jani overall was a decent family drama. This was Faysal Qureshi’s first production and he deserves all the credit for choosing a mature script and not starting with a typical drama which usually gets the ratings but such dramas seldom have substance. Faiza Iftikhar keeps on experimenting and always gives us at least one protagonist in every drama who is appealing and isn’t run-of-the-mill.

Baba Jani Last Episode Story Review - Realizations & Apologies

The direction and the overall treatment given to this play disappointed at times but if I compare it to many of the hyped dramas in recent times, it was not that bad considering that this drama was never promoted as the next big thing but it did deliver. The pace of the drama slowed down towards the end but I would still highly recommend this drama to all those people who like watching quality family dramas. Faysal Qureshi will be remembered as Baba Jani for a really long time!

Do share your thoughts about this last episode.

Baba Jani Episode 9 Story Review – A Birthday and A Bursi

Baba Jani Episode 9 Story Review – Asfand continues to be a one-of-a-kind hero who is wise and caring at the same time. Asfand’s sisters on the other hand get on your nerves, Najiba is more annoying than everyone else and her scenes can easily be forwarded because they are more or less the same in every episode.

Sadia, Nimra and Asfand’s Heart-Warming Relationship

The relationship these three individuals share is touching and their scenes are a treat to watch. Nimra is gradually getting more comfortable around Asfand. The way Asfand showed his love for Nimra was sweet and the manner in which Sadia thanked him every time was also really nice. Savera Nadeem’s expressions were brilliant in this episode because there were so many scenes in which she had to express how Sadia was feeling through her expressions. So far, Sadia has been shown as an intelligent woman but she also seems to be falling for Naila’s trap. Naila understand that a woman in Sadia’s situation will naturally have a lot of insecurities therefore she is doing whatever she can to trigger them. Sadia has also been shown as a simple woman therefore she will in the next episode do what Naila asked her to. Once again, I hope Asfand’s reaction will prove to be the reason why her confidence is restored. Asfand, Sadia and Nimra’s relationship dynamics have been covered convincingly in all these episodes. Sadia and Asfand both are likeable characters and it is not difficult to understand Nimra’s situation. Madiha Imam is absolutely brilliant in this role and Faysal Qureshi has done complete justice to his character as well.

More Family Politics

The family politics in this drama continues to be the same in every episode. The sisters keep on coming up with new plans to prove to Asfand that Sadia is not as sincere with him as he thinks. Their scenes should have been chopped down. Asfand’s reactions however are always a breath of fresh air. We continuously watch leading men in dramas being manipulated by either their mothers, sisters or wives therefore watching a man who has learned his lesson and does not fall for the manipulation is definitely pleasing to watch. The fact that Asfand wasn’t always like this and he learned from his mistake makes his character more human as well as likable. Najiba once again tried to create a misunderstanding between Asfand and Sadia, it did seem like perhaps this time Asfand will fall for the trap but on the other hand he once again showed that he was capable of judging scenarios himself.

Baba Jani Episode 9 Story Review - A Birthday and A Bursi

The Weak Points

The timeline was seriously confusing in this episode. Did it cover an entire day or two days? It was difficult to understand when the birthday started and at what time it ended. Apart from this, Najiba’s scenes really should be chopped down because they are highly repetitive. The scene in the restaurant could have been shot more convincingly because it looked like they were all sitting in someone’s dining area. The phone call to Nasir looked “fake” – impossible to connect to – since he has been completely missing in the past few weeks.

The Strengths

Baba Jani is not faultless but it definitely deserves due credit for showing a man in a different light, that is its main strength and the reason why I tune into this drama every week. Usually the writers use a foolish and gullible hero as an easy way to take the story forward therefore I truly appreciate the fact that Baba Jani offers something completely different and does so convincingly. Savera Nadeem and Faisal Qureshi look great together and their character too are extremely likable. I was not expecting Savera Nadeem’s role in the drama to be so substantial therefore that has really been a pleasant surprise. I also feel that the real story has not even started yet, it will start when Asfand has to take up the role of Baba Jani for good. Mehwish will return in Asfand’s life at some point, that is also something to look forward to especially because Asfand blames himself now for ruining her life. Looking forward to watching what this drama has in store for us!

The Preview

The preview of the next episode showed that Sadia decides to get a makeover and her sister in laws make fun of her. It also showed Saqib harassing Nimra – will Asfand finally put his foot down and ask Saqib to leave?

Baba Jani Episode 8 Story Review – A New Turn

Baba Jani Episode 8 Story Review – The story is gradually moving forward with every passing episode and Asfand’s relationship with Nimra and Sadia continues to be the most appealing aspect of the drama. Asfand’s character never disappoints but the supporting characters do not have the kind of presence or impact which could make their tracks more enticing.

Saqib Moves In With Asfand

Tonight’s episode opened with Saqib blackmailing his way into Asfand’s house. Asfand is over-conscientiousness which is why he offered help when Saqib narrated his majbooris to him. Asfand’s sisters and their families know how to manipulate him only too well. Asfand is not naive but at the same time he cannot turn a blind eye to his sister’s problems. He is dutiful and has certain principles and he is convinced that even after everything he has done for his sisters, he owes them more.

Asfand’s vulnerabilities and the extent to which he goes to accommodate others can sometimes be frustrating to watch but you always understand why he is like that. His back story and his thinking has been shown in a convincing manner therefore his actions are always relatable. Tonight when he chose to tell Saqib off rather politely even though he knew what Saqib was doing, it wasn’t the most satisfying reaction, but definitely one which was completely in line with his character.

Baba Jani Episode 8 Story Review - A New Turn

Asfand Supports Sadia and Nimra In His Own Way

The way Asfand supported both Nimra and Sadia was touching yet subtle. He does not like confrontations and gives everyone benefit of the doubt. This is the reason why he chose to show Sadia he cared by telling her he will wait for her when she got up from the dinner table after Saqib’s taunt. He also noticed that Nimra was not mingling with anyone in the house and something was bothering her. Later on, when he saw Saqib upstairs he decided that leaving Nimra alone with him would be a bad idea. Most importantly his conversation with Nimra was one of the best parts of this episode. I must say that it would have been so much better if Nimra and Asfand had more scenes together.

Asfand’s Meeting With Farida Khala

Asfand finally met Farida Khala. This meeting was long over due! Everything Farida Khala told Asfand brought back memories. He obviously felt responsible for how Mehwish ended up especially because Khala also mentioned that her marriage was delayed because of Asfand. The flashback scene showed why Asfand was feeling so guilty and why he was so upset.

Baba Jani Episode 8 Story Review - A New Turn

Naila’s Conversation With Sadia

Naila did what she does best when she tried to convince Sadia that Asfand was still in love with Mehwish. She also praised Mehwish over and over again and enjoyed playing on Sadia’s insecurities. For the first time it seemed like Sadia really was disturbed and doubtful. Some of Sadia’s reactions tonight also showed that she was more expressive and confident now.

Will Asfand Try To “Save” Mehwish?

How can someone like Asfand live with the fact that someone he once loved is unhappy now partially because of him? It is highly likely that Asfand will try to save Mehwish and will do something to get her out of this situation.

Performances and Direction

The performances were on point tonight. Faysal Qureshi, Madiha Imam and Savera Nadeem are brilliant in their respective roles. Sundas Tariq is also performing superbly. Saba Hameed is doing justice to her character but her character has nothing new to offer ever, it is the same thing over and over again! Naila’s character is slightly more interesting than that of Najiba’s because her actions have been affecting Asfand’s life in some way or the other.

The first few episodes were directed and edited brilliantly but lately the scenes do not have the kind of flow which keeps you glued to your television screen. Also, the scene in the hospital was not impressive since there was no basic medical equipment around. Khala Farida made an appearance after weeks and that too was highly unconvincing.

Final Thoughts

This episode had one of the most important developments in the story to its credit. The family politics tends to be tedious to sit through especially when the scenes are repetitive but Asfand’s track is interesting enough to keep you coming back for more. The fact that Nasir is completely out of the picture is impossible to ignore and a big flaw in the narrative.

Baba Jani Episode 7 Story Review – Wise Decisions

Baba Jani Episode 7 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani focused primarily on how Naila’s presence affected Nimra in particular. It also showed how much Asfand had learned from his previous experience and he made some wise decisions. Nimra and Sadia got more screen time tonight, Asfand’s character as usual proved to be the most refreshing element of the drama but some of the developments seemed rushed.

Najiba and Naila Team Up Again

The way Naila walked out of her house and was not willing to show any kind of flexibility showed that she was not the “victim” in this relationship. So far whatever we saw suggested that Saqib was just as mean as Naila but tonight he was definitely willing to do more than her to keep this marriage from breaking. Once Naila was at her parents’ house, Najiba made sure she also made an appearance every time something important was being discussed. Najiba and Naila’s sole purpose in life right now is to bully Sadia and Nimra in whatever way they can. The situations and their attitudes have been the same ever since Asfand got married. They also tried their best tonight to brainwash Asfand yet again! It was funny how Naila kept on saying “ek koney mei pari rahu gi” yet she was all over the place. Sundas Tariq’s acting was exceptional tonight especially in the scenes covering her unreasonable attitude towards Sadia and Nimra. These scenes however were somewhat abrupt and rushed, everything happened a little too quickly. By the end of this episode it seemed like Saqib might eventually move into this house instead of taking his wife with him which would create even more problems for Nimra in particular.

Baba Jani Episode 7 Story Review - Wise Decisions

Asfand Refuses To Give In To The Pressure

Asfand’s reaction to everything that happened tonight especially when it came to Nimra and Sadia went to show that he was a different person now. He could not bear to think that his sisters might feel alone in any way but he was also not going to be unfair to Sadia or Nimra to please his sisters. Asfand’s reaction when Naila told him that Nimra still had her father’s picture and that too with Sadia was extremely pleasant. Sadia’s response when Asfand told her how he felt about this entire situation was also touching. Asfand and Sadia’s relationship is heartwarming. Tonight, Sadia was shown being more expressive and Asfand too enjoyed the appreciation and love which she had to give. Faysal Qureshi and Savera Nadeem are both brilliant actors and they always look amazing together. Their on-screen chemistry makes their scenes even more realistic and likable.

Baba Jani Episode 7 Story Review - Wise Decisions

Nimra’s Reaction Was Relatable

Nimra’s reaction to everything that was happening was quite different from that of her mother’s. While Sadia is a mature, practical and wise woman who knows that compromising and understanding such situations is better than complicating things, Nimra looked at things differently. She did not say quiet when Naila taunted her on the breakfast table and she even shared her reservations about Naila with her mother. Nimra is also sensitive therefore she feels these things more. Even though she has started appreciating everything Asfand is doing for her but she does not think that she needs to put up with Naila and Najeeba’s rude behavior. Nimra’s reaction to everything was relatable and you couldn’t help feeling for her. Madiha Imam is an exceptional actress who always gives her best to every role she plays and never goes overboard. Her performance has been remarkable throughout.

Overall Impression

Nasir was once again missing from this episode and from Asfand’s life! Asfand’s sisters continue to “blackmail” him and even though he is wise enough to know better, he tends to fall for this emotional blackmail because he vowed to protect his sisters like his father would have. The timeline tonight was confusing and some of the situations were too rushed. Other than that, this episode was definitely better than last week’s episode because it focused more Asfand’s relationship with Sadia and Nimra.

Baba Jani Episode 6 Story Review – Family Politics

Baba Jani Episode 6 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani had more than its fair share of nand bhabhi issues. Although the bhabhi has been shown as the wise one in this relationship but even then there was nothing even remotely likable about the family politics. Asfand’s relationship with Sadia and Nimra was the highlight of this episode but Naila and Najiba completely overshadowed them because of the screen time they got.

Where Is Nasir?

Asfand and his relationship with the people who actually value him has been the best part of this drama but this episode focused more on how Najiba and Naila intervened in Asfand’s life more than anything else. Nasir was a positive person in Asfand’s life who balanced out the sisters’ negativity and who was introduced as an important character but he was completely missing from this episode and had nominal role to play in the last episode. His wife was there for Asfand but her husband wasn’t – something which did not make a lot of sense. Asfand’s scenes with Nasir always showed a different side of his personality since he was with someone he did not have to look out for but it was always the reverse. He was shown as someone who did not want anything in return for his friendship and concern therefore it was really important that he should have been part of every episode. Also, there should have been at least one more scene in which Asfand tried to get in touch with his khala again. Although Mehwish told him off the last time he went to see his khala but even then someone like Asfand would surely try harder to look after her since he partially blamed himself for what happened to her.

The dubbing was terribly off in the scene covering Asfand’s meeting with Umair, this scene was more like a scene from the dubbed Turkish plays and definitely not the best part of this episode. Najiba’s character so far has nothing new to offer. She wants her brother all to herself and is not the one to sit back and watch someone else enjoy Asfand’s wealth or his attention. While Najiba does not keep her feelings to herself, Naila does not reveal how she feels about Sadia in front of her brother. Their “tactics” are different but the characters and their motives are pretty much the same. Najeeba said to Asfand tonight that he was not old enough to play the “role” he wanted to play in Nimra’s life – something which is probably going to be the main objection in the upcoming episodes as well.

Change in Nimra’s behavior

The change in Nimra’s behavior has been covered convincingly. She is taking her time warming up to her step-father and with this episode she opened up a little. Madiha Imam has done a brilliant job of translating Nimra’s hesitation, her distant behavior and her anger flawlessly on-screen.

Baba Jani Episode 6 Story Review - Family Politics

Overall Impression

Asfand’s character is undoubtedly the most refreshing part of this drama. Asfand’s scenes with Sadia and Nimra are always touching but in this episode Najiba and Naila’s characters stood out more than anything else. There were some scenes tonight in which Sadia and Asfand both said exactly what the viewers wanted them to say. When Sadia said to Asfand that she was still having a difficult time believing that all of this was actually happening and Asfand shared why he felt exact the same way was one such scene. The scene in which Asfand said to Sadia that he knew that Najeeba must have said something to her was also such a scene which once again showed that he knew what his sister was capable of doing but he chose to forgive her every single time. Faysal Qureshi is extremely likable as Asfand and I am looking forward to the time when the story will focus more on his relationship with his step-daughter.

This wasn’t the best episode of Baba Jani but this drama overall has been different and convincing so far therefore I am pretty hopeful that it will only get better in the upcoming weeks.

Baba Jani Episode 5 Story Review – A New Beginning

Baba Jani Episode 5 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani marked the beginning of a new life for Asfand. This beginning was simple and smooth even though Asfand’s sisters did whatever they could to make things complicated. Asfand waited for his sisters and his special day was incomplete without them but he was ecstatic to finally share his life with Sadia. Asfand is wiser today than he was few years back but he is still as loving as he was before.

This New Beginning Meant Something Different For Everyone

In tonight’s episode the viewers saw how Asfand and Sadia’s marriage had a different meaning for everyone involved, directly or indirectly. For Asfand this marriage meant stability and the way he looked at Sadia suggested it was also like a dream come true for him. Asfand did not see a sick and frail woman in Sadia, he saw someone he eagerly wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Asfand has been shown as someone who takes relationships very seriously therefore he started working on his relationship in his own way right from the very first interaction he had with Sadia. He is also someone who does not expect much from anyone and believes in giving more but at the same time likes to be pampered. The breakfast scene showed just that!

Baba Jani Episode 5 Story Review - A New Beginning

For Sadia, Asfand’s concern and his personality overall turned out to be a pleasant surprise. She molded herself in this new role instantly and just like Asfand she showed her affection towards him by doing whatever she could. At the same time, she conveyed her happiness and gratitude with her smiles. Nimra did not welcome this change in her life and like any other youngster she did not accept Asfand as her step-father. Nimra’s love for her father and her lack of acceptance of this situation was shown through different scenes. She walked away and was upset when the nikkah was taking place, she also clung to her belongings because she found it difficult to accept this change. She cried herself to sleep later on and refused to go with Asfand and her mother for dinner. Nimra was shown as a teenager who was angry, upset and confused. Sadia on the other hand was shown as a practical woman who knew that this marriage and a husband like Asfand was the best solution to her problems. Naila decided to pay her brother and bhabhi a visit only after her husband reminded her that if Najiba accepts the bhabhi first, Naila will feel left out. Najiba on the other hand stayed stubborn right till the end of this episode. Her stance was aggressive and her confrontation with Khala ended up making Asfand even more angry.

Asfand and Mehwish’s Meeting

This was something most of the viewers were waiting to see and some of them were wondering if this would lead to something more. This meeting was written and executed well. This was a chance meeting and one in which there were no such references to the past which would make it look like either one of these characters were still in love with each other. Mehwish was angry for obvious reasons and Asfand handled the situation like a gentleman.

Baba Jani Episode 5 Story Review - A New Beginning

Performances and Dialogues

The performances tonight were realistic and on point. The styling and the makeovers in this drama too have always been natural and pleasing. Savera Nadeem looked radiant as a bride which was somewhat unconvincing since she is someone who has been fighting a really serious disease for a long time now. Savera Nadeem and Faysal Qureshi’s expressions tonight said more than any of their dialogues did. The way these two individuals felt about each other was more obvious from the way they looked at each other than anything else. Madiha Imam was also brilliant in all the scenes. I do feel however that Sadia and Nimra have had hardly any interaction. Their relationship has not been explored which is why there are times when you feel like a background or introduction is missing. The dialogues in this episode were simple but affective. There were no filler scenes in tonight’s episode, the editing was perfect which resulted in a seamless narrative.

Overall Impression

The simplicity and clarity with which the story has been presented so far has been the number one reason why Baba Jani continues to be a must-watch drama. The subject matter is brand new and it has been presented in a visually pleasing manner on screen. The lighting, camerawork and styling has been perfect. Faysal Qureshi has been faultless as the good-natured, forgiving and graceful male protagonist. Baba Jani offers something different and it does so with love!

Baba Jani Episode 4 Story Review – Important Developments

0

Baba Jani Episode 4 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani covered a different side of Asfand’s personality. While he still felt the need to please his sisters and was looking for their approval but the fact that he could not back out from a commitment made him go ahead with a major decision made entirely by himself, for himself. This was an important development which basically showed that Asfand wasn’t just a loving brother but a conscientious person who could do something radical to do the right thing.

Character Development

Asfand already knows what his sisters did but he chose to keep quiet. If he hadn’t known the truth he would not have gone to his khala for help and support. Also, he would have given his sisters more of a benefit of the doubt had he not known what they had done to have their own way. This entire development was covered in a logical and convincing manner. Najiba’s ‘love’ for her brother is impossible to relate to. She comes across as a highly manipulative person who cannot look past her own needs and wants. Tonight too it seemed like she might eventually make an appearance at the nikkah because of what her son said. Her children also take after her but her husband has learned to have his own way without letting her know! Tonight, he warned Asfand and later was there for him too when the nikkah took place. His advice to Asfand was one of the reasons why Asfand decided to talk to Sadia.

Situations and Performances

There were many times when Asfand was shown having second thoughts, this was convincing and totally in line with his character. Asfand has definitely learned a few lessons and is not the same person who asked Mehwish to ask for an apology. Asfand’s flaws make his character even more likable because in a way his weaknesses make him a empathetic person. It is also great to see few people in Asfand’s life who can see that sometimes his niceness makes it easier for his sisters to exploit him. His conversation with his friends always gives an insight into a different side of his character. Asfand’s sisters’ scenes have been more or less the same throughout and definitely not the best part of this play so far. On the one side we have a refreshing character like that of Asfand and on the other hand we have these manipulative and conniving women who don’t have anything new or exciting to offer. Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam gave the best performances tonight. While Faysal Qureshi got a lot of screen time and hence plenty of opportunities to showcase his brilliant acting skills, Madiha Imam managed to make her presence felt in scenes which were brief and to the point. Watching Faysal Qureshi and Savera Nadeem together again on-screen was an absolute delight.

baba-4

Overall Impression

I have to admit, the previous episode raised the bar really high therefore I had huge expectations from this episode. This episode primarily laid the foundations for what is coming ahead. Really looking forward to these new relationships growing. The preview of the next episode also showed that Mehwish will be back in Asfand’s life and will have some interesting questions to ask. This scene suggested, she still hasn’t moved on! Some of the scenes also suggested that Asfand will not let his sisters get away with having their own way once again… definitely looking forward to that too.

Baba Jani Episode 3 Story Review – One-of-a-kind Hero

Baba Jani Episode 4 Story Review – After watching this episode in particular, I would highly recommend this drama to all those viewers who are sick and tired of watching dramas which involve falling in love at first sight, women fighting over the male lead who might not fall into the “good looking” category but is rich enough to be extremely charming and attractive (character of course takes a back seat if the leading man is rich) and most importantly men whose character flaws are glorified like they are the most “charming” aspect of their personality! Baba Jani – Asfand – is truly a breath of fresh air!

Refreshing and Unpredictable

Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani was unexpectedly fast-paced and some of the developments in particular completely won me over. Asfand finding out that his sisters tricked him into leaving Mehwish was a pleasant surprise. This, once again showed that Asfand was not foolish but just someone who took his duties and responsibilities towards his family much more seriously than anything he expected from them. This development lead to Asfand leaving Mehwish with a goodbye message which was both meaningful and refreshing (yes I will be using this word a lot tonight!). The maturity, honesty and wisdom in Asfand’s personality is one which we get to see in older supporting characters every now and then in dramas but we have never seen another hero in our dramas who had this much grace. Although Asfand is a “nice guy” but his character is compelling at the same time. His actions are constantly driving the plot even though he is not fierce but he is definitely strong in his own way. Faysal Qureshi’s overall look, his body language and his performance has breathed tangible life into a character which is just plain beautiful!

baba-3

A New Interpretation Of Love At First Sight!

We have seen heroes falling in love with their leading ladies the second they look at them but tonight what we saw was a rare case of love at first sight! Asfand has raised his younger sisters and is like a father figure to them therefore when he saw Nimra, his feelings for her were completely different. He wanted to shelter her and he thought the best way was to give her respect by walking out of there. His gesture before leaving was touching and one which was poignant and brand new. The way Asfand’s reaction was covered in this scene was brilliant. Apart from this, the expressions of everyone involved and the confusion couldn’t have been translated more convincingly on screen.

Characters and Situations

All the situations shown tonight, gave some insight into the characters. Asfand was hurt and disappointed to find out what his sisters had done but he was extremely forgiving. Nasir and Rakhshanda’s characters are clearly going to be two of those very few people in Asfand’s life who will be standing by him without any ulterior motives. Najeeba and Naila know Asfand’s weaknesses and they constantly tried to make him feel bad for marrying them off to men who were not their perfect match. They were shown coming to Asfand’s house to take a “break” and had a problem doing anything at all for their brother. Asfand’s decision to go ahead and look into the proposal Rakhshanda suggested himself was a direct result of loneliness more than anything else, something which was also shown convincingly. The fact that Asfand went to see Mehwish’s mother showed that he had moved on. This conversation too was refreshing!

Concluding Remarks

This episode of Baba Jani was the best one so far. With the exception of a confusing timeline, everything else was on point. The camerawork, locations, makeovers and the overall feel of this play continues to be extremely impressive. With the exception of Savera Nadeem everyone else looked perfect for their respective roles. The styling especially is pleasing, a much needed break from gel backed hair which are most often distracting. Asfand’s character and the way it has been translated on-screen is the best thing about this drama. All the performances have been spot on throughout which is definitely an added bonus. The production values of this drama gives it the edge it needs. The director has also done his job really well. I would especially like to thank Faysal Qureshi for not banking on done-to-death scenarios and trying out something new, since this is his first production.

Baba Jani Episode 26 – Story Review

This latest episode of Baba Jani focused a great deal on making the viewers understand why Mehwish found it impossible to trust Asfand with her secret. Najiba finally got a reality check and although this alone is not going to change the way she perceives ‘love’, it seems like such reality checks will ultimately change her thinking. Asfand continued to be the cool-minded loving and caring husband and father. Some of the conversations tonight were not too satisfying and Faryal Mehmood’s performance wasn’t up to the mark in few of the scenes. Also, her get-up did not go well with her situation.

The Blackmail

The fact that Mehwish had no choice but to give in to her husband’s blackmail was well established in this episode. Mehwish’s insecurities and fears are understandable but the scenes covering what was going through her mind were repetitive. Her mother is probably the only person who truly understands Asfand which is why she had enough faith in him to trust him with this secret. Out of all the women Asfand has ‘invested’ in, the only one who gives him the credit he deserves is this woman otherwise all the others including Nimra take undue advantage of his love and concerns.

The Conversations

Asfand’s conversation with Nimra about why she met Umair made me feel for him more than ever and for the first time Nimra appeared to be rude without a reason and thankless too. The conversation Mehwish had with Nimra after she saw her with her ex-husband showed that Nimra loved her Baba Jani and was looking out for her. It would have been so much better if she shared with Mehwish how her Baba Jani let her keep her father’s picture and allowed them to celebrate birthdays even when he was going through hell himself. Nimra could have helped Mehwish understand her baba jani better but that opportunity was lost. Zahoor Elahi’s conversation with Najiba was the most satisfying of them all since he said everything which the viewers wanted to hear. Najiba’s controlling tactics and her strange concept of love was elaborated well by her husband in this conversation. Although Najiba thought about it but she was obviously not going to have a change of heart all of a sudden.

Baba Jani Episode 26 - Story Review

The Meeting

Asfand has always been shown as someone who believes in solving problems quickly and he did just that when his khala told him what was going on. Mehwish’s ex-husband was not going to make things easier for him and for the first time we saw the cool and calm Asfand slightly losing his cool. Seems like Asfand will pay him off to get rid of him.

Overall Impression

Baba Jani has been a superb family drama but it has been stretched quite a bit in these past few weeks. This drama will end next week and I am looking forward to a decent ending. It would have been good to see Nimra treating her baba jani better in this episode, her attitude towards Asfand was upsetting. Having said that, Madiha Imam’s performance has been impressive throughout. The preview of the next episode suggested that Mehwish will go ahead with the plan of selling her jewelry. Will Asfand tell her that he knows the truth? Will Asfand ever get the unconditional love he deserves, from at least Nimra and Mehwish? Waiting to find out.

Baba Jani Episode 24 Story Review – Different Shades Of Love

This latest episode of Baba Jani mainly focused on Najiba and Naila’s plan to create a rift between Nimra and Mehwish. There was some progress in Nimra and Umair’s track as well. Asfand continued to play referee in the most graceful manner possible. Umair’s character development is the most positive aspect of the story right now.

Najiba & Naila’s Plan

Najiba and Naila’s insecurities yet again were the driving force behind all their plotting and planning. Once again they invested a lot of time in brainwashing both Mehwish and Nimra. Although Mehwish and Nimra know these women only too well but since they don’t know each other well enough, they started doubting each others intentions. At this point, most of the viewers want to see a decent ending to this play which would ideally include a change in Najiba and Naila’s behavior although right now it is impossible to predict how that is going to happen. Saba Hameed and Sundus Tariq’s performance throughout has been on point but their characters are not layered. They are negative, bitter, over-possessive and insecure, they love Asfand but their controlling tactics always create problems for him. These characters are not likable but they definitely are a true representation all such women who cannot ‘share’ their brothers or sons with anyone. Thankfully there are enough positive characters in this drama to keep ones interest alive. Asfand, Umair, Zahoor and even Mehwish’s mother are always wise and thoughtful even though they are not always perfect.

Baba Jani Episode 24 Story Review - Different Shades Of Love

Umair & Nimra’s Relationship

Umair and Nimra’s meeting in the restaurant was one of my favorite scenes in this episode. The dialogues were well-written and the change in Umair is extremely likable. He is turning out to be a mature person who knows exactly what he wants yet he is not being emotional. Umair’s approach was practical and gradually the writer has managed to convince the viewers that Umair will be the perfect life partner for Nimra. Ali Ansari has played this role convincingly and Madiha Imam owns her character completely.

Different Shades Of Love

This episode showed how people love differently. Some people love like Najiba and Naila – they like to control, then there are people like Umair and Asfand who look out for the people they love and have a more practical and wise approach, others are like Nimra, who love silently and get hurt easily. And then there are those like Mehwish, who are afraid to love!

Asfand & Mehwish

While Asfand is always willing to give every relationship his best even though he has also been back-stabbed in the past by the people he loved the most, Mehwish is still healing from the bitter experiences she had in the past. Mehwish’s mother is always there to remind her how blessed she is to have a man like Asfand but Mehwish has a completely different perspective. This episode covered how Asfand made Mehwish feel wanted and loved but his sisters did whatever they could to undermine his efforts. The preview of the next episode suggested that Mehwish will have bigger issues to worry about really soon and this time too it seems like she will not take Asfand into confidence. No matter how hard Asfand tries somehow the women in his life never seem to have enough faith in him! Faysal Qureshi has translated Asfand’s character brilliantly on screen. Faryal Mehmood has also done justice to her character. I am sure I am not the only one who is anxiously waiting to see Asfand worry-free and happy in the end? This drama has given us one of the most responsible male protagonists and that continues to be the best thing about Baba Jani.

Baba Jani Episode 23 Story Review – New Beginnings, Old Insecurities

This latest episode of Baba Jani covered the changes in Nimra’s behavior, Umair’s newfound confidence and finally a wish from Asfand which was all his own. There has been absolutely no change in Najiba and Naila’s characters – will their track ever take a turn for the better? Their insecurities, plotting and planning seems to be never-ending.

Important Developments

The most important development tonight was that Nimra and Umair formally started seeing each other. Umair made a declaration of his love for Nimra and was more willing now to take a stand for her. Nimra too felt differently about Umair now since he played a big role in clearing the misunderstanding between her and Asfand. This relationship has evolved gradually therefore this entire development has been quite convincing. The second important development tonight was that Nimra and Mehwish started getting along with each other. Nimra took the initiative but later on Asfand was shown giving all the credit to Mehwish, which was strange. Mehwish’s character keeps you guessing. There are times when you are not sure what is going on in her mind. Mehwish’s reaction when Asfand said that he wanted to have a child was understandable since she is still not sure if she will ever be truly happy with Asfand. Also, it is completely natural for her to think if Asfand will put his own kid above his adopted son. Except for Asfand, all the other characters have some insecurities or the other. Nasir remarks about Asfand were right on point – he truly is someone who feels happy when others are happy because of him. All these tracks are gradually headed towards an ending which will most likely be a happy one. Umair and Nimra are destined to be together.

Baba Jani Episode 23 Story Review - New Beginnings, Old Insecurities

Najiba & Naila’s Plans

Najiba and Naila teamed up yet again, this time against Mehwish and Nimra both. Their scenes had been-there-seen-that written all over them. Their conversations in this episode were not the least bit amusing since it was a repetition of past events. No matter what they have against each other, they always join hands whenever there is some stability in Asfand’s life. Although their dialogues suggest that they are over-possessive about their brother but their actions show that they are just incredibly insecure, greedy and manipulative. Sundas Tariq and Saba Hameed have played their parts well but the amount of screen time these sisters have been getting makes their scenes difficult to watch. This time Saqib too is assisting them and taking Umair and Nimra’s picture had to be the worst thing they have seen so far but the promo of the next episode suggested that they are probably not going to follow this plan through.

Overall Impression

The best thing about this play is that every episode has some tangible development in the story. The most clichéd aspect of this play has to be Najiba and Naila’s track but the good aspect of this track is that the writer has not overdone the negativity. There are times when Najiba and Naila’s conversations are amusing as well but that was not the case in this episode. Personally, I am growing weary of watching Najiba and Naila in the same light. The performances in this play never disappoint. I must say that this is the first time I am watching Afshan Qureshi in a balanced and positive role. The preview of the next episode suggested that Mehwish will get a call from her ex-husband. Baba Jani has been a really decent watch throughout therefore it should not be stretched and the story should be wrapped up in the next 2 weeks or so.

Baba Jani Episode 22 Story Review – Clearing Up Misunderstandings

With this episode of Baba Jani, many of the misunderstandings were cleared. This was another episode which showed Asfand trying his best to keep everyone happy but failing to do so because now there is one more person in his life who needs constant reassurance. Mehwish and Nimra’s relationship is off to a rocky start. Just like every other episode of Baba Jani, this one too had at least one scene which was really amusing. Baba Jani continues to be a well-executed family drama which can get slightly slow at times but it is always satisfying.

Umair To The Rescue

Umair played an important role in this episode in clearing the misunderstanding between everyone. Umair has suddenly changed into a positive central character and unlike before there is a good reason why Nimra really should get married to him. He is probably the only family member who truly looks out for Asfand. Nimra’s attitude tonight was a lot like it was when Asfand and Sadia got married. The apology was short and sweet, it was also good to watch Asfand and Nimra communicating with each other for a change. Najiba’s emotional dialogues suggested that she might finally show some signs of change but it looks like she will continue to believe that she is the only one who deserves Asfand’s love and attention. All these developments were covered convincingly and in an intelligent manner the writer changed the viewers’ perspective about Umair hence laying the foundations for future developments.

Baba Jani Episode 22 Story Review - Clearing Up Misunderstandings

The Newly-Weds

Asfand and Mehwish’s scenes were a lot like the scenes which covered Sadia and Asfand’s initial days together perhaps because the writer wanted to show the viewers the difference between these women. While Sadia was more thankful and in awe of Asfand right from the beginning and she started to get extremely insecure later on, Mehwish is already skeptical about Asfand since he let her down in the worst manner possible once before too. Secondly, Sadia never had the confidence to tell Najiba or Naila off but Mehwish is not going to let Najiba get away with saying all those nasty things. The fact that this marriage was nothing short of a shocking development for Mehwish, makes it easier for the viewers to relate to her frame of mind. The slight shock Mehwish felt when she saw Nimra for the first time was captured nicely. It seemed like she did not know before how old Nimra was. Asfand’s patience and cool-headed nature was tested several times in this episode and every time he proved that he was incapable of losing his cool. Asfand’s sensible and mature approach throughout has been the most refreshing element of this drama. The fact that even after trying so hard, he cannot please everyone and ends up making some mistake or the other, makes his character more human.

Overall Impression

This latest episode of Baba Jani took the story forward considerably and the changes in Asfand’s life were covered flawlessly. The fact that this drama is always close to reality and the story stays on track makes it one of the best family dramas. Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam’s outstanding performances are the highlight of every episode. All the other actors have also played their parts superbly. I am looking forward to a few fast-paced episodes and a gratifying ending to this beautiful journey.

Baba Jani Episode 20-21 Story Review

These two episodes of Baba Jani covered the reasons why Asfand had to make yet another impulsive decision in order to protect Nimra. This decision was more impulsive than any other decision Asfand had made so far. For the first time it seemed like Asfand was not thinking straight at all because of the constant betrayals but once Asfand makes a commitment, he does not back off. Omair played a positive role throughout which makes you want to root for him. Nimra deserves someone like him in her life. There was lack of communication between Asfand and Nimra in this episode as well which made me feel for Nimra.

Nimra and Asfand’s Scenes

Nimra and Asfand’s scenes in these two episodes covered a great deal. The misunderstanding between them regarding Saqib was cleared and just when Nimra convinced herself that this nikkah might be a good decision after all, things changed dramatically. Although every single decision Asfand has taken ever since Sadia passed away has been directed towards protecting Nimra yet somehow she is always the one who feels left out. The lack of communication between these two characters is sometimes frustrating. Asfand is so busy protecting Nimra that he does not have the energy or the time to tell her what is going on. It also looks like, not telling her all this is another way of protecting her but most often it just backfires. It was especially surprising when Asfand decided to marry Mehwish but did not even tell Nimra that her nikkah with Omair had been cancelled and this was the new plan now. This is the reason why Nimra always misinterprets everything that goes on. She rightly thought that her Baba Jani was cheating on her mother by getting married this soon after her mother’s death. Faysal Qureshi translated Asfand’s confusion and hurt brilliantly on screen in this episode. Even though Asfand was hurt and felt cheated but he decided to keep the truth to himself.

Baba Jani Episode 20-21 Story Review

Najiba and Naila Gang Up Again

Najiba and Naila joined hands once again when they found out that they now had a common ‘enemy’ – Mehwish! Some of these scenes were funny and Saqib just like always added fuel to the fire in whichever way he could. Najiba continued to be selfish and manipulative and Naila followed her lead. Omair’s role tonight was truly refreshing and the best part of this episode.

The Nikkah

Asfand’s nikkah with Mehwish was a little too sudden. Rakhshanda’s reservations were on point and basically showed that even Asfand’s well-wishers did not feel that this was a good idea. Mehwish’s concern about her child and her changed behavior was apparent from all the scenes. Even in the beginning of this drama, the viewers were shown that she was really close to her mother therefore the fact that she was willing to go ahead with this nikkah because of her did not come as a surprise. The entire scenario however was a lot like Asfand’s first nikkah especially the part covering Najiba and Naila’s stance.

Baba Jani Episode 20-21 Story Review

Overall Impression

The performances in both these episodes were superb throughout. I felt for Asfand and Nimra both. Asfand’s decision to get married to Mehwish however made you wonder if marriage really was the solution to every problem! This drama has successfully shown how difficult it can be for a man like Asfand to balance every relationship without hurting anyone. Asfand is morally upright and extremely responsible, he tries his best but there are many times when someone or the other ends up getting hurt by his actions. Now that Mehwish is going to be Nimra’s step-mother, I am waiting to see how their relationship is covered. Will Najiba ever mend her ways? Are Nimra and Omair destined to be together?

Baba Jani Episode 2 Story Review – Egos In Action!

0

Baba Jani Episode 2 Story Review – This second episode of Baba Jani was for the most part predictable but there were also certain aspects which were penned down and executed in a way which was refreshing. Baba Jani’s Episode 2 was yet again visually pleasing and the productions values have also been impressive, so far. Sadia and Nimra were completely missing from this episode. Faiza Iftikhar’s scripts do not take off immediately but there is always something new about them. In this episode, the way Asfand dealt with the situation in the last few scenes, gave this story a certain level of freshness.

Najeeba And Naila In Action

This episode opened with Asfand asking Najeeba to go to khala’s house so that she could formally propose to Mehwish. Asfand was honest about the reasons why he felt he should get settled down now. Najeeba is a clever woman who knew it was better to create a misunderstanding between Mehwish and Asfand instead of talking him out of this marriage. Najeeba and Naila’s conversations once again showed their insecurities and their plans. When Najeeba and Naila shared their reservations with khala, she did not hold back either. It seemed like khala too was not too eager to get her daughter married in this family, for obvious reasons. I must say that the dialogues and this whole situation was penned down in such a manner that they were easy to relate to. Najeeba refusing to eat anything because according to her she ate only homemade food was extremely relatable! Later on when Saqib wanted to eat lunch, Najeeba refused to cook and asked Asfand to get the food delivered! It is a common way of “judging” how sughar the girl or her mother is when people go looking for proposals! Najeeba and Naila pushed all the right buttons and Khala too was not very eager to compromise. It was a classic case of egos and vested interests in action.

baba-1

The Way Asfand Handled The Situation Was Refreshing

The first part of this episode was predictable, although the performances and the overall treatment given to this part was superb but everyone could clearly see where this track was headed. The second part however was penned down brilliantly. This was not shown as one of those misunderstandings which are created immediately and turn everything around. The way Asfand handled the situation was definitely new. He insisted that Mehwish should meet him and they should talk about what happened. When he asked Mehwish to apologize to his sister, there was no ego involved. For him, it was the obvious thing to do since Najeeba Aapa was older than Mehwish. This scene showed an interesting side of Asfand’s personality – he is not foolish (like so many men we see in our dramas all the time) but he has certain principles and he expects Mehwish to understand them. Even when Mehwish refused to apologize, the main factor which triggered him was when she said that she regretted waiting for him all these years. Asfand is a middle-aged man and Mehwish is much younger than him therefore you do understand why he’d think she would much rather marry someone else. This misunderstanding made perfect sense and was shown brilliantly.

The Performances

The performances and the makeovers just like last week were right on point. Faysal Qureshi has translated his character gracefully on screen. The character itself is quite interesting and Faysal Qureshi has made it even more so by giving it the right treatment. Saba Hameed is exceptional no matter which role she plays, it is always a treat watching her perform. Faryal Mehmood looks great in this drama but I feel she could have underplayed this character a little. Faysal Qureshi is definitely more convincing as someone who is madly in love. All the supporting actors performed well in this episode.

The Preview Of The Next Episode

The most interesting part of the preview of the next episode was Asfand and Sadia’s meeting. Looks like the story will move forward rapidly next week. I missed watching Sadia and Nimra in this episode therefore definitely looking forward to watching more of them.

Best Part!

The best part of this drama so far is the male lead Asfand and the overall feel of this play. Every scene has been directed beautifully which makes watching this drama a pleasant experience and a visual treat.

Baba Jani Episode 19 Story Review – Going Strong

Baba Jani Episode 19 Story Review – This was another episode of Baba Jani which showed the maturity and foresightedness with which Asfand handled every single perplexing problem. In rest of the scenes the viewers were shown Nimra’s confusion, Najiba’s manipualtion, Omair’s likeness for Nimra, Naila reaction to finding out about Saqib and Asfand’s meeting with Mehwish. Baba Jani has been exceptionally well written throughout. It is a refreshing break from the over-commercialized plays and continues to be convincing. The performances never fail to impress and even after so many weeks, Baba Jani continues to be entertaining.

Nimra’s Confusion

There were many scenes in this episode which rightly depicted Nimra’s state of mind. Madiha Imam translated this confusion faultlessly on screen. There was no reason for Nimra to refuse this proposal, she also did not want to make things even more complicated for her baba jani but it seemed that the thing which confused her the most was that she could not figure out why Asfand had made this decision. Nimra’s imaginary conversation with her mother was the highlight of this episode. Their bond was always heart-warming and this scene was covered intelligently. It basically showed the viewers how Nimra was trying to convince herself and the explanation she gave herself made perfect sense. Nimra’s conversation with Omair was also another meaningful conversation in this episode. Omair might be Najiba’s son but he is not like his mother at all. He definitely likes Nimra and respects her as well because he was willing to bear the brunt for her.

Baba Jani Episode 19 Story Review - Going Strong

Najiba and Naila Defend Asfand

For a change Najiba and Naila joined hands to defend Asfand when Saqib tried to prove Asfand wrong. Later on too when Najiba was talking to her husband, she blamed Nimra only. There is obviously a good reason why they have so much faith in Asfand. It was good to see them supporting him but they don’t love him enough to respect or love the people he values. Najiba in particular is extremely insecure and greedy which is why her love for Asfand usually takes a backseat. Asfand on the other hand, covered up for Saqib because he knows what the outcome will be if Naila finds out the truth. Now that Nimra knows the truth, she will finally have the reason she has been looking for but it remains to be seen if that will calm her down or upset her even more. Asfand has always handled every situation in the most wise and calm manner therefore I am actually looking forward to how he deals with this situation and everything else which is going to happen in the upcoming episode.

Mehwish and Asfand’s Meeting

Mehwish and Asfand’s meeting was brief and it focused mainly on how broken Mehwish was now. Asfand married Sadia out of pity therefore I am wondering if he will also decide to marry Mehwish because that is going to be the best solution to all his problems once Omair refuses the proposal. Asfand’s definition of loving people is quite different from everyone else we have ever seen in dramas – for him protecting and looking out for people he loves is the only way to show what he feels for them. That’s all that he has been doing from the first episode and that is what makes his character so special.

Overall Impression

Baba Jani is one of the most balanced and well written drama on television right now. It has not disappointed in all these weeks and the promo of the next episode suggests that it will keep on giving its viewers something interesting to look forward to. This episode was well-written and well-executed. Faysal Qureshi is exceptional as baba jani and all the other actors are also doing complete justice to their roles. The preview of the next episode showed Omair telling Asfand that he could get married to Nimra and Asfand telling Najiba that he was getting married – what’s going on? Dying to find out! Any guesses?

Baba Jani Episode 17/18 Story Review – Meaningful & Entertaining

Baba Jani continues to be pleasantly surprising, it does not have dramatic twists but is well-paced, it is simple yet very appealing. It also falls in the category of few dramas nowadays which can be termed as family dramas. Asfand’s maturity, his cool-mindedness, the confidence with which he solves every problem that comes his way and most importantly his ‘shortcomings’ make him one of the best male protagonists we have seen in dramas this year.

A Way Out

Asfand made an impulsive decision after Najiba refused the proposal initially but Najiba figured out that getting her son married to Nimra will reap more monetary benefits than she ever imagined and she changed her mind. Asfand has been shown as an intelligent man throughout therefore the fact that he decided to talk to Saqib instead of telling Naila what had happened, was something which was completely in line with his character. I was expecting him to lose his cool this time around but he knew that doing something drastic would hurt Naila more than anyone else therefore he made sure that Naila didn’t find out the truth. Asfand felt relieved knowing that there was finally a way out which seemed like the best possible option but Nimra wasn’t happy with this decision. The way Nimra’s thought process was shown to the viewers was the best part of the latest episode of Baba Jani. It is always good when you don’t have to wonder why a certain character is confused or upset. Although Najiba is manipulative and greedy but Omair seems to be a nice boy who is genuinely interested in Nimra. The most refreshing element of this entire development is that Asfand wants Nimra to study and is in no rush to marry her off. Faysal Qureshi acted brilliantly tonight especially because he managed to convey how much thinking and mental exertion went into being the mature responsible person who wanted to protect everyone.

Baba Jani Episode 17/18 Story Review - Meaningful & Entertaining

The Best Scenes

Like every other episode of Baba Jani, these episodes too had quite a few scenes which were relatable as well as very well-put-together. Asfand’s conversation with Saqib, the subtle manner in which he put his message across and the affect it had on Saqib was covered superbly. The scene in which Asfand tells Nimra that she could stay in the house and everything else he had planned was also written and acted-out so well. The background score in this scene could have been better but overall it was such an emotional scene. Madiha Imam and Faysal Qureshi played their parts so well, They are also really well-suited for their respective roles.

Baba Jani Episode 17/18 Story Review - Meaningful & Entertaining

Overall Impression

Every episode of Baba Jani has something substantial to offer. There are times when you feel that some of the characters completely disappear when they should be shown but other than that this drama never disappoints. The new turn in the story has made things even more interesting. Asfand and Nimra’s relationship and Asfand’s character continues to be the best thing about this drama. Apart from Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam, Aamer Qureshi’s acting tonight was right on point, loved those expressions in the end! Baba Jani is such a refreshing break from dramas which revolve around female protagonists who are most often either weak or too negative. This drama has given the viewers an extremely likable and unforgettable male lead and it keeps on giving us something to look forward to. The preview of the next episode suggested that Najiba might just tell Naila the truth! Mehwish will also make an appearance in the next episode.

Baba Jani Episode 16 Story Review – The Secret Is Out

Baba Jani Episode 16 Story Review – This latest episode of Baba Jani showed Najiba’s reaction to the proposal and eventually Asfand finding out the truth about Saqib. With this episode, the only solution Asfand had for this situation also turned into an even bigger problem. Asfand’s problems are increasing with every passing episode but there seems to be a possible solution in sight since Najiba’s husband tried to convince her that if Umair got married to Nimra, it will be beneficial for them too. Najiba and Naila’s scenes are always the same, their characters so far have been one-dimensional – there is nothing positive about them at all which is disappointing and makes their characters less appealing as well as annoying. The only attraction right now is Asfand playing the role of Baba Jani and his relationship with Nimra but so far there have been hardly any scenes in which these two interacted on an emotional level.

Even More Pressure

After Najiba told Asfand off and the neighbors questioned his relationship with Nimra, Asfand was forced to take a step which he wouldn’t have otherwise. This particular development made perfect sense since Asfand was perhaps thinking about Nimra more than himself when he asked Naila to stay. Naila, Saqib and Najiba’s scene were the same as always, some of these could have been easily chopped down. The pressure which Asfand felt was shown convincingly but he was not shown taking Nimra into confidence before making this decision. Nimra suffered in silence with little or no solace from Asfand, which was disappointing. The fact that Asfand loves Nimra and will do anything to keep her safe has been well-established by now but we have not seen Asfand comforting Nimra in a way which would make Nimra feel less lonely. A few more scenes covering their relationship and a little less of rest of the family would have made this episode more poignant.

Baba Jani Episode 16 Story Review - The Secret Is Out

Nabila Decides To Speak Up

Nabila’s support for Nimra dwindled in between but her concern for Nimra today was one of the most refreshing aspects of this episode. I am glad this particular track was not dragged and Asfand found out the truth in this episode. It would be interesting to watch him handle this situation because so far he has been shown as someone who hardly ever loses his cool. Asfand listened to the entire story sitting in the factory where there was so much noise, he should have walked out to have this conversation.

Performances and Situations

Faysal Qureshi translated Asfand’s confusion as well his ‘innocence’ convincingly on screen in this episode. Madiha Imam has been remarkable as Nimra throughout, her expressions and body language never fail to impress. The rest of the actors also performed well but their tracks are losing their appeal with every passing episode. Since Mehwish is back in the picture now and so is Nasir therefore they should be given some screen time in every episode, it will give the viewers a much-needed break from Najiba’s rants as well!

What will Asfand do next? I am waiting to find out. How many of you watched this latest episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Baba Jani Episode 15 Story Review – Reality Checks

Baba Jani Episode 15 Story Review – This was another well-paced episode of Baba Jani which had quite a few unexpected developments. I was not expecting the story to move forward to this direction so rapidly. The fact that the writer did not waste time showing the mourning period alone but showed how quickly Asfand had to deal with the realities of losing Sadia and adopting Nimra within days, came as a nice surprise. Asfand’s character shows how much difference a committed and dedicated man can make. Things have not been easy for Asfand but he has always stepped up whenever Nimra needed his support the most. The performances and the screenplay in this episode were very convincing, the background score however was misleading in some scenes.

Asfand Under Pressure

The intense pressure Asfand had to face shortly after Sadia’s death was the main focus of attention in this episode. Asfand went from being in denial and fighting the pressure to accepting it and looking for a viable solution. It was good to see him going to all those people for advice who he trusts. Khala’s character is turning out to be positive, this is yet another pleasant surprise and a good addition. Nasir is back in the picture as well which balances out the negativity of Asfand’s sisters. The conversations Asfand has with these characters also help the viewers understand what he is thinking about and how he reaches a certain conclusion. It is refreshing watching Afshan Qureshi in a positive role for a change since most often she is shown as the conniving and manipulative mother in dramas.

Baba Jani Episode 15 Story Review - Reality Checks

I love the clarity with which this entire situation was handled. It was impossible to even think last week that Asfand would be thinking on these lines this soon but everything was shown so convincingly that you could not help but understand why he would do so. Khala’s dialogue about Asfand, “mera asfand hi hei jo hr parishani ko kaleje se laga leta hei”, described this character perfectly in one line! It is true that Asfand has not been able to do justice to every relationship but he has definitely done whatever he could for Nimra, who for now is his top priority. There was a time when there were reasons to doubt Asfand’s credibility but now he has showed that he will do whatever it takes to keep his commitment. Faysal Qureshi’s performance was the highlight of this episode. Asfand and Nimra had a few scenes together in this episode and both these scenes were heart-warming as usual. Instead of showing Asfand express his love and concern verbally for Nimra, he was shown taking practical steps to ‘protect’ her.

Mehwish Has Not Forgiven Asfand

Mehwish and Asfand’s scene was short but it showed how uncomfortable this chance meeting made Asfand. He wanted to talk to Mehwish but she clearly was angry. Later on, Mehwish’s conversation with her mother showed that she had not forgiven Asfand and she had most certainly not forgotten what had happened. The way Mehwish compared her situation with that of Sadia and Nimra suggested that she might not be playing such a positive role in Asfand’s life in the future but then this is Faiza Iftikhar’s script therefore I am totally prepared to be pleasantly surprised. Faryal Mehmood and Faysal Qureshi acted brilliantly in the scene showing their reactions when they crossed paths but the background score was totally inappropriate.

Breaking Stereotypes

In our dramas, the men are either the victims or the aggressors, there are hardly any male protagonists who are shown as the saviors. Asfand breaks the stereotypical male characters we see in our dramas all the time. The writer has shown Asfand as an intelligent man who is completely capable of making mistakes but would do anything to protect the people he loves. He does so with dignity and without asking for the viewers’ sympathies which makes his character even more likable. We definitely need to see more such characters in our dramas. Asfand proves that men are intelligent and completely capable of making sane decisions!

The Proposal & The Preview

The proposal at the end of this episode was another unexpected development. Najiba’s initial reaction and the preview of the next episode suggested that she is greedy but not greedy enough to accept Nimrah as her daughter-in-law. Things will get more difficult for Nimrah when Naila and Saqib move in with Asfand once again. Will she suffer in silence or this time she will turn to Asfand for help this time?

Baba Jani Episode 14 Story Review – Emotional

Baba Jani Episode 14 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani was intense and with this episode, the course of the story changed altogether. Even though initially I was expecting Sadia to die much sooner but I am glad the writer gave her so much screen time because her character exited from the story at a time when she will be missed the most. The goodbyes were extremely emotional and the way Nimra clung to her Baba Jani showed the strong bond they shared.

A Shock For Asfand And Nimra

Sadia made a conscious decision to end her life when she stopped getting the treatment she needed in order to stay alive. Her failing health was not noticed by people who were close to her because she did whatever it took to hide what was going on. It took Najeeba and Naila just a few weeks to convince a completely happy and confident woman that her existence was a source of trouble for the man who had done so much for her. Najeeba and Naila played mind games which ultimately led Sadia to make a decision which did more harm than good. Asfand and Nimra had no idea what was going on. Nimra did not really find out that Sadia opted not to get the treatment done but Asfand found out the truth. Asfand was shocked to hear what the doctor told him but there was clearly no time to think about why Sadia had done this. This entire development was covered convincingly. Nimra’s frame of mind and her reaction to all this was the most emotional part. Madiha Imam played her role brilliantly, her expressions and her overall performance couldn’t have been more impressive. Faysal Qureshi made you feel for Asfand every step of the way and he also translated those scenes so well on screen which showed that looking out for Nimra was his top priority.

Najeeba and Naila Are Ruthless

These two sisters are the most ruthless characters since they were not satisfied even after Sadia passed away. The way Najeeba looked forward to the news and the manner in which she gossiped about it made me look forward to the time when she will be finally paying for everything she has done. Although I absolutely hate both these characters but I have to say that Saba Hameed and Sundas Tariq both have played their roles so well. These two characters however are so dark, they do not even have an ounce of sympathy for their brother or for anyone else.

Baba Jani Episode 14 Story Review - Emotional
The Goodbye Scene

The last scene covering Asfand and Sadia’s final goodbye was extremely poignant. Savera Nadeem and Faysal Qureshi acted superbly and the dialogues were written beautifully too, they were short yet meaningful. It was however strange that Asfand did not run to get the doctor or nurses when Sadia stopped responding. If there was a scene showing the doctor telling Asfand that Sadia was going to leave him any second now before this one, his acceptance of her death would have made more sense.

Nimra Did Not Get To Say Goodbye

It would have been good if Nimra got to say goodbye to her mother when Sadia was awake and responding. Asfand sent her back home and never came for her, will she forgive him for that? The preview of the next episode suggested that this was not going to be an issue but it did seem like it should be.

Overall Impression

I was not expecting Sadia to die in this episode therefore this was a shock for me as well! The way everything was covered was logical since the way Sadia gave up everything altogether, she couldn’t have survived for too long. There were some details which were missing, like how did Sadia convince her doctor and why the doctor did not get in touch with her husband who was regularly coming with her to get the dialysis done. The performances tonight were exceptional and this episode was extremely poignant. Sadia is going to be missed and I feel for Nimra already! Will she be able to survive all the hate which took away her mother’s life? The preview of the next episode showed that Mehwish and Asfand will meet once again. Waiting to see how their track is taken forward from here on. Asfand’s real test begins now!

Baba Jani Episode 13 Story Review – Fatal Decision

Baba Jani Episode 13 Story Review – This episode of Baba Jani had two of the most important decisions to its credit. Nimra made a decision which gave Asfand and Sadia the ultimate joy but Sadia’s decision caused nothing but harm both to herself and to those people who love her. Asfand, Sadia and Nimra never disappoint; their track always has something substantial to offer which gives you a reason to tune into this drama.

Najiba Wins, Asfand Loses

Even after trying his best to prove to Sadia that he loves her, Asfand lost in this episode. Najiba’s negativity and scheming won because she has always played on Sadia’s insecurities in every way possible. Even though Sadia was truly satisfied and content with the way things were but Najiba’s words changed everything altogether. Sadia’s thought process and her decision made sense but the fact that Asfand never talked to the doctor himself and did not insist that he wanted to go with Sadia the next time, was strange. Also, since Asfand has been accompanying Sadia regularly, he shouldn’t have fallen for this lie so easily. This development was definitely difficult to relate to. The fact that Sadia made this decision right after Nimra accepted Asfand as her father, suggested that she was now confident that Nimra will not be lonely even if she has to live without her mother. Sadia has always been shown as someone who does not want to burden anyone beyond a certain point therefore it seems that she took this decision to relieve Asfand from his duties as well. Also, any person who is sick for such a long time would naturally be very sensitive and hearing what Najiba said could have this kind of an affect. I am waiting to hear, what Sadia was thinking. Is she tired of being a burden? Is she ready to leave Nimra now because she knows that Asfand will be there for her? This development was very disturbing since the choice Sadia made was clearly not as “selfless” as she thought it was. I felt for Asfand and Nimra more than her since this was almost like “cheating” on these two beautiful individuals who love her so much. This twist in the story was shocking to say the least! I am pretty sure the final conversations between all of them are going to be extremely emotional.

Baba Jani Episode 13 Story Review - Fatal Decision

Asfand Sahab Is Now Baba Jani

Yes! This development was the best part of tonight’s episode. The writer showed the gradual change in Nimra’s attitude towards Asfand in the previous few episodes therefore watching her accept Asfand as Baba Jani was easy to connect to and extremely heart-warming. I must say that this was yet another development which was not expected just now. The way this entire development was covered was beautiful. Everything Asfand said to Nimra and the way she changed his “status” after that conversation was touching. The lunch later on and the change in Nimra’s overall attitude was translated so well on screen. Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam both played their characters exceptionally well tonight. The happiness Asfand and Nimra both felt and the connection they have developed looked so natural on screen. Savera Nadeem, Faysal Qureshi and Madiha Imam have amazing on-screen chemistry which makes their scenes a treat to watch. They really do come across as people who belong together.

Baba Jani Episode 13 Story Review - Fatal Decision

Nasir Finally Makes An Appearance

It was great to see Nasir back in the picture. He is one of the very few positive people in Asfand’s life and Tipu Sharif has played his part well too. I hope that we see more of him in the upcoming episodes. The viewers are getting an overdose of Najiba and we are hardly getting to see Nasir – some of Najiba’s scene need to be chopped down so that we can know what is going on in Asfand’s mind through his conversations with Nasir.

Realistic Scenes and Natural Performances

Even though Najiba gets on my nerves but I must say that even her scenes are extremely realistic. That scene in which the sisters were gossiping while they enjoyed pizza was funny and easy to relate to especially that addition of Najiba asking about the mirchei! Saba Hameed always performs brilliantly no matter which character she is playing. All the actors have given solid performances throughout.

Baba Jani Episode 13 Story Review - Fatal Decision

The Real Story Has Just Started

I feel that the actual story will start once Sadia is out of the picture because then the focus is going to be entirely on Baba Jani and his daughter. Sadia is going to be missed and the next few episodes will be really emotional.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode? How many of you are angry at Sadia for making such a foolish and impulsive decision? Do share your thoughts about it.

Baba Jani Episode 12 Story Review – Relationships Growing

Baba Jani Episode 12 Story Review – This was one of the best episodes of Baba Jani since it had many pleasant surprises in store. Asfand continues to impress and like many other episodes, this one too had some unpredictable developments. Asfand’s character and the way he protects his wife has always been and still is the most refreshing element of this drama. Whenever you start doubting if Asfand would be able to do justice to Sadia and Nimra, whether he will be able to fulfill his commitment and promise, he proves you wrong.

Nabila Is Out Of The Picture

I was expecting Nabila to be around for longer and it was good to see her supporting Sadia and Nimra, the way she did but Nabila’s sudden departure came as a complete surprise. Through this entire development, I am guessing, that the writer showed that even in such a difficult situation Asfand did not let Sadia down. The scene which covered Nabila and Sadia’s conversation after which Nabila took the medicine was confusing since it did not cover whether Nabila took the medicine herself or Sadia gave it to her. Sadia clearly told Nabila that she did not know much about medication and that she should see for herself which medicine she wanted yet later on Nabila said that Sadia gave her the medicine. Although, the way Asfand dealt with this entire situation was very pleasing indeed, it was difficult to understand why Nabila was lying. Sadia too held herself partially responsible therefore it was important that this scene should have been covered in more detail.

Baba Jani Episode 12 Story Review - Relationships Growing

Declaration Of Love

The misunderstanding because of which Sadia had been feeling insecure and inferior was finally cleared tonight. This was a great episode in terms of Sadia and Asfand’s relationship in particular. The way these two bonded and the manner in which Sadia went from feeling sorry for herself to feeling more confident than ever was covered beautifully. The way these two declared their love for each other was the highlight of this episode. The best part of this track is that you don’t feel that Asfand is doing Sadia a favour or that he is contributing more to this relationship than her. Asfand and Sadia both complete each other in a wonderful way. Asfand also needed a loyal and loving person like Sadia in his life just as much as Sadia needed Asfand love and support. That’s the beauty of their relationship and the script that although Asfand’s character is one in a million but the writer has written Sadia’s character in such a way that you never feel sorry for her. Even when she was feeling for herself today, it was easy to connect to her character without seeing her as a ‘bechari’. She has a dignified and strong personality because of which she too is her husband’s support. The way both these characters have been translated on screen definitely is another reason why they are so likable and easy to connect to. Faysal Qureshi and Savera Nadeem both have translated these characters superbly on screen. They also share great on-screen chemistry because of which Asfand and Sadia have made for each other written all over them.

Nimra’s Growing Respect For Asfand

Although Nimra is still confused and she is trying to find her place in her new house and these new relationships but few of the scenes tonight clearly showed that Nimra’s opinion about Asfand had changed. She likes the way he cares for her mother more than anything else and she is intelligent enough to know that this man will not let them down. Although, like any other teenager, she is impulsive and does not agree with a lot of things, she also has a tough time dealing with all these new relationships, but Nimra’s character for the most part been positive. She is receptive as well as sensitive and does not play mind games like Asfand’s sister. Madiha Imam’s performance throughout has been impressive. She knows how to underplay a character and at the same time make it shine on screen.

Baba Jani Episode 12 Story Review - Relationships Growing

Overall Impression

This episode had so much to offer and the way Asfand is trying his best to keep his promise continues to be the best part of this drama. The preview of the next episode showed Asfand reassuring Nimra that she belonged in this house and in his life probably more than Sadia did. Looking forward to this conversation in particular.

Baba Jani Episode 11 Story Review – Complicated Relationships

Like every other episode of Baba Jani, this one too had some beautifully written conversations and also some situations which made you wonder if it was even possible for Asfand to do justice to his wife and his adopted daughter in such a situation. Sadia questioning Asfand about his feelings for her was the best scene tonight. Nabila’s support for Sadia and Nimra was also refreshing.

Asfand and Sadia’s Relationship

Asfand and Sadia’s relationship’s ups and downs were shown convincingly in this episode. One aspect of Asfand’s personality was quite obvious from many scenes tonight and this trait of his personality can also be termed as one such weaknesses because of which tonight especially he made some major error of judgments. The opening conversation between Asfand and Sadia made it quite clear that he knew something was bothering Sadia but he failed to fully recognize what this “something” could be. Later on, his decision to organize the talawat was also one such decision which did more harm than good. Asfand is sensitive and receptive but he is not as smart as it seemed like he would be. He picks up vibes from people and situations but most often he fails to protect Sadia and Nimra from all the hate they get, in an attempt to please everyone. Asfand failed Sadia and Nimra tonight when he let Naila go on about his begairti and how his wife was using him in front of Nimra. On the other hand, every time he takes a stand for his wife and daughter, his sisters get offended. The way Sadia questioned Asfand tonight about why he was not jealous, was a way of asking him if he really loved her. Asfand has his own way of showing this love and right now that is just not good enough to put Sadia’s insecurities to rest. I have to say that I felt for Sadia and Nimra tonight more than Asfand and I also felt that Asfand failed to protect them from his sister’s hatred.

Baba Jani Episode 11 Story Review - Complicated Relationships

Nabila’s Positive Role and The Repercussions

Everything that Nabila did tonight was quite unexpected. Even though it was quite obvious in the previous episode that she liked Sadia and Nimra but the way she tried to protect Nimra was a positive development which was much-needed and pleasing to watch. Najiba can easily be passed as the biggest phapakutni we have seen in our dramas in recent times. It would have been nice if she was sincere with at least one other person in her life except herself. Nabila and Nimra’s scene was sweet and this was the first time that we saw Nimra showing her affection for someone other than her mother in such a manner. Later on however Nabila had to face the consequences of her actions. The way Nabila handled this situation and the way she supported Nimra was a nice break from all the negativity she has been getting from everyone except Asfand.

Nimra and Sadia’s Scenes

Nimra’s scenes with her mother were meaningful. Everything she says resonates with the viewers because she is most often the neutral observer in a situation and she is also the real victim. The fact that she complains and speaks her mind makes her character human and more likable. Sadia on the other hand feels that she needs to compromise in return for everything Asfand has done for them.

Baba Jani Episode 11 Story Review - Complicated Relationships

Overall Impression

This episode covered a great deal and there were plenty of scenes involving all the characters. The performances were superb as usual but there were times when you felt like some of the scenes were missing and there wasn’t continuity in the scenes. Like in one scene Asfand was saying to Sadia “kisi ko pata bhi nahi chale ga” and in the next one Naila was shouting at him for organizing a talawat for Nimra’s deceased father. I also feel that there should be at least one small scene in every other episode which Najiba is shown in her own house so that there is some change of scenery and her children and husband stay in the picture. The best part of tonight’s episode were the dialogues and the way the story was taken forward. There were no unnecessary scenes but actually some scenes could have been added in between.

The Preview

The preview of the next episode suggested that either Nabila teamed up with her sisters or there is going to be a huge misunderstanding between Sadia and Asfand because of Nabila. So far, Asfand has not overreacted to anything therefore it is highly likely that this situation too will be handled wisely by him. It is impossible to predict what turn the story will take next!

Baba Jani Episode 10 Story Review – Interesting Developments

Baba Jani Episode 10 Story Review – Tonight’s episode of Baba Jani focused on the changes in Sadia because of the constant reminders that she was not good enough for Asfand and how perfect Mehwish was/is. Mehwish got divorced and Asfand felt more guilty than ever. Nabila had a change of heart after she observed Sadia and Nimra. Saqib made advances at Nimra and this time around it seems that Nimra will keep this a secret.

Sadia’s Growing Insecurities

Sadia’s state of mind and the reasons why she felt distant from Asfand all of a sudden even though Asfand was as caring as before were shown realistically and were relatable. Sadia’s makeover, the reaction she got from Najiba and Naila as well as the affect all of this had on her was also shown convincingly. The scenes in which Sadia was thinking about everything Najiba and Naila had said to her and later on the one in which she was crying were stretched for no reason. After finding out that Mehwish was divorced Sadia started wondering if Asfand indeed was still in love with Mehwish. It was good to see her reaching out to her husband and giving him a chance to share what was worrying him like a mature person instead of distancing herself from him. It was easy to understand why she did not try harder to find out what Asfand was thinking about because she had a good reason to be scared of what he might say. Asfand was still in shock therefore his reaction too was justified. If he shared everything with Sadia things would have been different. Sadia was happy and extremely confident before Naila convinced her that Asfand was still in love with Mehwish. Even though she has been feeling insecure but this character has been written in such a way too that you never see Sadia as the victim. Savera Nadeem also translated these insecurities and the confusion her character was going through on screen in a graceful manner.

Nabila’s Change of Heart

The way Nabila changed her opinion about Sadia and Nimra both was definitely one of the best developments tonight. Even though Najiba kept on telling her otherwise, it was quite obvious that Nabila was not like her sisters. She seemed to appreciate everything Sadia was doing for her and later on, she did not draw any wrong conclusions when she saw Saqib and Nimra together. Her advice to Nimra however showed that she was naturally looking out for her sister more than anyone else. Nimra has always shared everything with her mother but now it seems like she might keep this a secret. In one of the previous episodes, Asfand also felt that Nimra felt uncomfortable around Saqib and asked her to share anything that was worrying her but right now it seems highly unlikely that she will tell Asfand all this. Nimra and Sadia’s scene in the beginning showed that although Nimra had not accepted Asfand as a father figure but she acknowledged everything he was doing for them and wanted to do something to thank him. I missed watching Asfand and Nimra’s scenes together in this episode. Madiha Imam like always was a breath of fresh air. She is an exceptional actress who never disappoints.

Mehwish’s Divorce

Khala and Asfand’s meeting showed that these two were more close now than before. Asfand’s willingness to help and the way he said that the engagement was a thing of the past clearly suggested that he had moved on. Later on, Asfand looked upset, which was of course a natural reaction. If Mehwish was going to be divorced and she was going to be back in Asfand’s life eventually, she should have been given some screen time at least tonight. There are times when you feel like the screen time has not been divided equally among all the tracks and characters. Some of the characters only make an appearance when they are needed otherwise they are completely out of the picture.

The Good Points

The best thing about tonight’s episode was that Naila and Najiba did not take center stage. Asfand, Sadia, Nimra and Mehwish’s track took a new turn and it is impossible to predict what turn the story will take next. It seems like the story will only get more interesting from here on. The performances were up to the mark as usual and some of the situations did not go as expected which is always good especially when such developments are convincing. Like many other plays written by Faiza Iftikhar, this one too is unpredictable which also make you curious.

The Weaknesses

Some of the scenes tonight were stretched unnecessarily and the camera work in a few scenes was not impressive. This episode definitely had more strengths than weaknesses.

The Preview

The preview of the next episode showed more of the same – Najiba’s insecurities and planning – but I am sure there will be more to it. I am glad that the preview did not give away much.

Baba Jani Episode 1 Story Review – Promising Start!

Baba Jani Episode 1 Story Review – First Impression

Baba Jani’s Episode 1 was simple and engaging. The first episode of Baba Jani introduced the viewers to all the central characters. The introduction to the characters was quite clear, the performances were up to the mark and the overall feel of this first episode was pleasant. The play has been written by Faiza Iftikhar, directed by Ali Faizan Anchan and produced by Faisal Qureshi & Abdul Qadir Shah under the banner of Connect Studios. Faysal Qureshi, Saba Hameed and Savera Nadeem were last seen together in Qaid-e-Tanhai which was an unforgettable classic therefore that is one of the many reasons why I am really looking forward to watching them all together again on screen. They are all brilliant actors who always deliver no matter what. Faiza Iftikhar’s scripts most often have some refreshing aspect and her stories are almost always unpredictable therefore I have huge expectations from this one. This was definitely the kind of episode which piques your curiosity and you want to tune in to the next episode more because of the characters than the story at this point.

Characters and Initial Story

This first episode showed how Asfand (Faysal Qureshi) had worked hard for so many years to provide for his sisters and now he was finally getting his last sister married. Asfand’s other two sisters Najiba (Saba Hamid) and Naila (Sundus Tariq) were shown as greedy and manipulative individuals who treated Asfand as an ATM card! They constantly put pressure on him even though they knew that he already had so much to worry about. Asfand was shown juggling a lot of things at once and when he finally thought he could relax now that all his sisters were married, Najeeba reminded him that he also had to get her daughter Alina (Areesha Razi) married since her husband was good-for-nothing! Najeeba constantly complained about how she was married to a man twice her age and clearly all her concern for Asfand was fake. Asfand is engaged to his cousin Mehwish (Faryal Mahmood) and he is in love with her as well. Najeeba sees Mehwish as a “threat” because she feels that if Asfand was to be happily married, he will not look after his sisters any more. Nimra (Madiha Imam) and her mother Sadia’s (Savera Nadeem) track was slightly confusing since we don’t know yet whether they are related to the family or they are neighbors. Sadia is a widow who has serious health issues but she does not have the resources to get herself treated. The relationship between them was heart-warming.

Baba Jani Episode 1

Performances and Situations

The situations shown in this episode were such that they gave a good insight into the characters. Every scene gave some information about these characters. Asfand’s back-story was revealed in a brief scene in front of the portrait while his daily struggles were shown through different scenes. Najeeba’s deprivations and manipulation both were conveyed convincingly through scenes with her sister, daughter and Asfand. Mehwish’s reaction when her mother walked out of the ceremony showed that she was quite capable of getting angry and showing it to Asfand if she did not like something. While her scenes with her mother showed that she had complete faith in Asfand too. Faysal Qureshi’s makeover in the show went well with his character. His performance was right on point, as always. Saba Hameed never disappoints, I am looking forward to finding out more about her character. Faryal Mahmood performed her role well too. Savera Nadeem and Madiha Imam did not get a lot of screen time, definitely waiting to see more of them in the upcoming episodes.

Interesting & Entertaining

This first episode of Baba Jani was interesting and entertaining. It was also visually pleasing. The direction and the editing both were spot on. The production values were impressive as well. Faiza Iftikhar’s characters are always convincing and layered therefore although this first episode gave the impression that the characters are somewhat black and white, I am sure that will not be the case!

Preview of The Next Episode

The preview of the next episode showed that Najeeba creates a scene when she goes to ask for Mehwish’s hand in marriage for her brother. Will this be the end of Asfand and Mehwish’s engagement? Will Asfand see things for what they are or will Najeeba manage to fool him? I am waiting to find out!
