Baandi Episode 8 And 9 Story Review-Helplessness

0

These two episodes focused on the increasing helplessness of the characters. We know how Meeru’s parents were forced to leave her at Faiza’s house to save their honour and dignity but things still did not go as they wanted to. Tahwaar came to know that Meeru was in the city now and misused the whole situation and traped Raju in the case of selling his own daughter. Raju was punished by the panchaiyat and was beaten near to death. This is a common tradition in the rural areas of Pakistan where rural courts can take one’s life or even order more heinous punishments without any valid reasons. Baandi is hitting hard on this subject and showing how these waderas exploit poor people and rule over their generations.

Baandi Episode 8 And 9 Story Review-Helplessness

Another face of a Baandi is represented by Rameen. Since the start her character’s plight and Faiza’s reaction over it was very vague. One second it seemed like Faiza is throwing her in hell just because of her greed but the mystery is solved now. Faiza is not her Rameen’s real mother and technically everything that Faiza has belongs to Rameen as it was her mother’s. This makes it easy for Faiza to throw her into the dungeons and lock them without even glancing back. Kamran Jilani has played a perfect evil character. You hate him when he comes on screen or looks at Rameen. The way Rameen’s father has acted though towards the situation is hateable. He is the one even greedier than Faiza as he is Rameen’s real father and should try to show a bit of sympathy at least but Shahnawaz is the one dying for more money.

Wali is still in a haze. He is trying to make things right in his sister’s life and on the other hand, is falling for Meeru. Faiza is still unaware of the situation with Meeru and Wali and Babu Bhai is the one helping him. The way he asked him that does he even know what he is doing showed that Babu Bhai really cares for Meeru and was trying to save her from even more cruelty.

Baandi is doing a really good job showing the true face of society and the plight people are facing due to waderas in the rural areas and white collar criminals like Faiza in the cities!

Baandi Episode 6 And 7 Story Review-New Beginning Maybe

Tahwaar is doing his best to get Meeru and at the same time make the life of her parents hell. From burning their fields to humiliating Raju again and again, he has not stopped his mission. Yasir Hussain has outperformed himself in Baandi. You actually feel creeped out by Tahwaar. He has really picked up the accent and has managed to look like a really cruel Wadera. The helplessness of a poor father but at the same time, a fierceness he feels for his daughter has been beautifully portrayed by the character of Raju. How helpless these people are in front of these Waderas but how he has distanced himself from his beloved daughter just to keep her safe from Tahwaar. Tahawaar has a new game plan now and seems like it would destroy Meeru’s family.

Hina Dilpazeer is another actress one can swoon over. She has portrayed the hypocrisy and obsession of Faiza in a classic way. Faiza is a woman who has come from a poor background and now she just want all of that to go away. She tortures anyone who is lesser than her financially just to take out her obsession of hating the poor. The way she switches herself in the scene from preaching the good to actually beating her maid is something she should be applauded for. She has taken to the character of Faiza beautifully and is one of the strongest pulls of this show.

Baandi Episode 6 And 7 Story Review-New Beginning Maybe

Aiman Khan has been a bit weak in the acting department in this show. She is not matching to the level of all her co-stars. Muneeb Butt till now has also been a perfect Wali. He wants to do good but is helpless because of the circumstances. He has now started falling for the Baandi aka Meeru and his mother’s reaction to this will be something to look forward to.

Rameen and Farhan’s track is also running in the background. Kamran Jelani is the cruel husband and he has made me hate his character Aadil with his performance.

Baandi is highlighting the problems of the poor and how they are exploited in the rural areas in a very realistic way up till now. How it goes from here will be something to watch!

Baandi Episode 3-5 Story Review-Slow Progress

0

Baandi is progressing slowly and it is still a great watch. The characters are beautifully etched in this drama. With Tahawaar doing his best to get Meeru, Meeru’s parents finally had to decide to part with her. In many rural areas of our country, this is the ground reality. People are enslaved for generations against some petty amount and then exploited for everything. Meeru was devastated with the way Tahawaar came to her house and violated her privacy and her right to freedom. Seeing no other options, she even tried to kill herself. A big thumbs up for Yasir Hussain here. I cannot understand why was he wasting himself in roles like Moti (Lahore  Se Aagay). He has given life to Baandi with his phenomenal portrayal of Tahawaar.

Rameen’s story was also progressed when we saw how Wali’s friend Farhan was interested in her. The status gap is something that came between them, his feelings were however one-sided since Rameen had no idea about it. Wali knows it and feels helpless when he thinks that his sister who is going through physical and mental abuse could have been happier with a person like Farhan. I am also liking Muneeb Butt’s portrayal of Wali. He looks angry and helpless at the same time. He has perfectly shown how a person supported by his parents can never take a stand against them even for his own sister. Rameen’s helplessness was also very relatable. Mostly women facing abuse hide the wrong doings of their husbands because of children and lack f support from their own parents like she did while explaining about her burnt hand.

Baandi Episode 3-5 Story Review-Slow Progress

Faiza and Shahnawaz show the real hypocrisy and greed prevailing in our society. Yes, people can damage their children for their greedy gains. The way Hina Dilpazeer shows the double standards of Faiza is a treat to watch. Hina has shown her versatility once again. The way she becomes a scholar in front of others and beat the poor and scare then ones lower than her in financial status shows how people can be and how easily they keep fooling the world around them.

The paths of Wali and Meeru have finally crossed and he will soon find out that she will be their maid. Aiman’s acting has been quite weak in Baandi, maybe because of the accent or she is not giving a foolproof chance to show her prowess in this project. Let’s wait and see how Baandi unfolds further.

Baandi Episode 2 Story Review-Misery

0

Baandi in its second episode also remained true to its core. Miseries never stop for the poor. The powerful exploits them and can use every whim to get what they want from them without thinking of any consequences, all thanks to the lacking system of justice. Tahawaar is totally confident and knows that he will get Meeru by hook or by crook. Baandi has clearly shown the Haari culture more prominent in the areas of Sindh where people are enslaved for generations at the name of some meagre debt. Meeru’s father loves her so much and he was finally near to cleaning his previous debt but Tahawaar had other plans. The way Meeru’s mother is ready to marry her off to a man who is already married and is older than her just to save her from Tahawaar was heart-breaking. This is not a fantasy as this happens in many areas of Pakistan where girls like Meeru and Bakhtu are married off in teenage to be saved from ill fates.

2018-09-30_14.56.44

Baandi is also showing us the other side of the society. It is not just the poor who could be Baandis but the rich too. The way Rameen is being exploited by her own parents shows how the society oppresses women of all classes. The hypocrisy portrayed by Hina Diplazeer deserves a huge round of applause. She has once again shown why she is one of the finest actors Pakistan has. Muneb Butt is also doing a great job as Wali. The helplessness and anger of a man torn between his wrong parents and a victim sister are perfectly portrayed by him. He does not conform to anything going around his house but is not yet in the position to defy it. We also have a new character in the drama and he might end up with Rameen but it will be a long way to go.

Yasir Hussain needs a special mention as he has really surprised me as Tahawaar. It is indeed his best performance till date.

Baandi Episode 1 Story Review-A Strong Start!

Writer: Asma Nabeel

Director: Syed Ahmed Kamran

Cast: Aiman Khan, Muneeb Butt, Yasir Hussain, Hajra Yameen, Kamran Jilani, Noman Masood and                  Hina Dilpazeer.

Baandi is written by Asma Nabeel of Khaani fame, has come up with another story. This time she has penned down a tory focusing on the ordeals of Haaris at the hands of feudal lords. The story is set up in Sindh where people are enslaved for generations on petty debts.

The story shows us two settings. One is rural where there is a feudal lord Tahawaar played by Yasir Hussain. He has inherited everything from his equally cruel father. He and his people do not care about the lives of people working under them. Meeru (Aiman Khan) is the daughter of a Haari who has been enslaved in front of these feudals since his father’s time. Tahawaar takes a look at Meeru and wants her for himself. His wingman tried to do the same to Meeru’s friend Bakhtu who ultimately had to run away to save herself. He has already started plotting to snatch Meeru from her family. Tahawaar’s father had cut Meeru’s father’s tongue which shows the mentality of Tahawaar and his forefathers.

2018-09-16_14.04.23

On the other hand, we have Wali Khan (Muneeb Butt), his mother Faiza Begum (Hina Dilpazeer) is a spiritual leader while his father Ali Faizan (Noman Masood) is a businessman. The family which looks so sophisticated from the front has dark secrets. They married off their 16-year-old daughter Rameen (Hajra Yameen) to Aadil (Kamran Jillani) for a business arrangement. Rameen’s husband is abusive to that extent that she lost her unborn child to his violence. The perfect looking Faiza and Ali did not utter a word for their daughter and instead asked her to be more patient. Wali who is preparing for CSS is not okay with his sister’s condition and tries to ask questions from his brother in law but get snubbed by him and then his own parents.

2018-09-16_14.02.36

The introductory episode was strong as all the characters were revealed with their shades. The editing was done perfectly and each scene seemed necessary and engaging. The one person who looks like will make Baandi a must watch is Yasir Hussain, he has taken up the role of Tahawaar with perfection. Hina Dilpazeer also looks like the snobby and materialistic speaker, who doesn’t do what she asks her followers to do.

It will be interesting to watch Meeru and Wali’s worlds collide as well as more of Tahwaar. Stay tuned!

Baaji Film Director Saqib Malik's Remarks about Meera

Talking about it, he said, “It was a great experience working with Meera. Meera was great. A lot of stories were made, rumours were being spread, people talked a lot about Meera, but let’s just say that the film was successfully completed, it grabbed the screens and it became successful. It was a labour of love. I would love to work with Meera again because she’s extremely talented. She has an expressive face. Her face talks a lot. You don’t have to do much with her face that has thousand of stories to tell. Meera comes with great energy on the set but her drawback is that she is easy to manipulate, she believes others too easily. She is superstitious as well. She gives importance to the hearsays, but otherwise ask anyone, the amount of appreciation Meera got through Baaji is amazing, it is because of her hard work. I would thank Meera for her brilliant acting and I would thank me for my hard work as well”. Here is the link to the video:

Following these allegations, Images by Dawn got in touch with Qandeel’s father Azeem and he has completely denied that he knew about any drama being made on his daughter’s life. This is what he said:

“A group of people came to me and asked for permission to write a book on my daughter Qandeel. However, they did not mention anything about a TV serial to me. They asked for the rights and gave me a sum of Rs50,000 and didn’t offer further compensation.”

He further claimed that he would not have given any permission to making a drama on his daughter’s life:

Baaghi Episode 9 Review – New Beginning

Tonight’s episode focused more on Fauzia Batool’s gradual transformation and this time around the viewers were shown how Fauzia actually felt about leaving her son behind. This latest episode was even better than the previous one because unlike the previous episodes it clearly showed all the different emotions Fauzia was going through. Once again Fauzia’s actions proved that even though she knew what was at stake, she was willing to do whatever it took to make her dreams come true. The happiness of getting closer to her goal always outweighed the sadness of leaving her family and child behind.

Baaghi Episode 9 Review - New Beginning

The ad agency which hired Fauzia turned out to be an escort agency but so far she has not realized what the nature of her job actually is. Fauzia’s transformation and her interactions with everyone involved were covered flawlessly in tonight’s episode. The fact that Saba Qamar has made sure that some traits of Fauzia’s personality stay intact makes her character easy to relate to. Saba Qamar completely owns Fauzia Batool’s character; she always manages to translate the different aspects of her personality flawlessly on screen. The tip scene was hilarious! This scene and many others like this one showed that Fauzia Batool was learning the ways of the new lifestyle she had adopted but she was obviously not going to transform overnight.

I also liked the scenes in which Fauzia posed in front of the mirror. Anyone coming from her background would do exactly that considering she looks like a completely different person now. Abid’s frame of mind and the developments in the village were also covered convincingly in this episode. Fauzia’s older brother however is completely out of the picture, which is really odd because he was given a lot of screen time in the first few episodes and also because he should be the one most infuriated with Fauzia right now. His reaction should have been covered.

Baaghi Episode 9 Review - New Beginning

While Fauzia is busy building a new life for herself, her parents have to bear the brunt back home. Also, Abid gave her son away to his sister and everyone was quite happy with the arrangement. Gogi’s job isn’t only to groom Fauzia but also to make sure that Fauzia does not go off track. Every time she is doubtful about her decision or feels depressed, he gives her the motivation to go on. Khalid Malik is absolutely brilliant as Gogi. It is great to see him outshine in such a role. In fact all the actors in this drama have given impressive performances so far.

Fauzia was always shown as someone who wouldn’t allow a man to exploit her therefore I am waiting to see how she reacts when she finds out what her actual “job” is! She was shown signing a two year contract in this episode which would mean that she cannot go around looking for work anywhere else even if she wanted. The gullible aspect of Fauzia’s personality allowed all these people fool her till now but she will sooner or later find out the truth and I am waiting to find out what her course of action would be then!

Overall, this was an interesting episode of Baaghi. Unlike before, I am definitely more interested in Fauzia’s journey now.

How many of you watched this recent episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Baaghi Episode 8 Review – Rushed Yet Entertaining

Baaghi’s story has finally taken off with Fauzia Batool starting the new journey of a life she dreamed of for a really long time and one she is so willing to live! The fact that she barely paused to think about what she had left behind went to show that Fauzia’s ambition came before everything else – she didn’t even let the thoughts of her child, who she clearly loved, derail her. This episode was executed well with the exception of the timeline which was yet again confusing and some details which were not covered. So far the impressive performances by all the actors involved have to be the best aspect of Baaghi. Just like every other episode of Baaghi Saba Qamar’s effortless portrayal of a girl who was doing everything she could to play the role she had “rehearsed for” and waited for, for years now, was faultless. The manner in which her etiquette changed the second she entered the office which she felt was going to be the place which will alter her life forever was the first scene which showed that she was more than ready to fit into this new environment. The coffee scene was amusing and what followed later on was entertaining but somewhat rushed as well.

This episode opened with Fauzia trying to convince Abid to let her go to the city to avail the modeling opportunity. She however wasn’t going to hear no for an answer. The way Fauzia continuously asked Abid for a divorce even before this showed that she wanted this relationship to end. The fact that this job offer came after Fauzia found out about Abid’s affair is also another reason why she does not feel the need to invest more time and energy into this marriage. While it is good to see a woman who knows that she deserves better and that she shouldn’t be forced to live with a husband who is abusive and is cheating on her, Fauzia is definitely not someone who thinks things through when it comes to pursuing her dream. The fact that she does not let anyone or anything stand in her way is her greatest strength and it is also her biggest weakness! Firstly, she blindly trusted Abid and took a stand to get married to him only because he promised that he will help her make her dreams come true. Then, she went ahead and trusted all these people in a completely new place solely because they are helping her start a career in showbiz. Fauzia has been shown as a strong headed girl with tons of confidence who is more naive than anything else.

Baaghi Episode 8 Review - Rushed Yet Entertaining

Overall, this episode of Baaghi was fast-paced and entertaining. There were however some developments which seemed rushed and some scenes could have been added to fill in a few gaps between the scenes which effected continuity. For example one minute Fauzia was standing in Abid’s house and crying and the other moment she was in the bus travelling to the city. Also, her reaction after her makeover should have been covered since this was a major change in her outlook and could be shown as the first time when she realized that she was nearer to her dreams today than she ever was. Also, why is Fauzia’s brother completely out of the picture?

Apart from Saba Qamar, Ali Kazmi and Saba Faisal have given outstanding performances throughout. Seemi Raheel and Irfan Khoosat are also Phenomenal actors who nail every role assigned to them. All these actors look and act the roles they are playing which makes their characters easy to connect to. The impressive performances have definitely elevated the level of this drama.

I am waiting to find out what Fauzia’s new “mentor” wants in return for all the favors he is doing for her since polishing and grooming a girl like Fauzia seems like more of an investment than anything else. Also, I hope that Fauzia’s journey is covered in more detail and not the way the few days (or perhaps one??) of her new life were covered in this episode.

Baaghi Episode 7 Review – Impressive Performances

This was the best episode of Baaghi so far because it covered a great deal and with this episode the story finally moved forward to the next phase of Fauzia’s life. In the previous episode the viewers were shown that even though Fauzia’s circumstances were not favorable and her marriage was gradually falling apart but even then she kept on reminding herself that this was not the life she wanted. This episode showed Fauzia’s frustration after every woman she turned to for advice and support told her that there was nothing odd about the way her marriage turned out because all husbands were unfaithful and wives had to put up with it. The reaction of Fauzia’s mother in particular was covered brilliantly; the way she kept on enjoying her snack and wasn’t the least bit alarmed said a great deal about her frame of mind! In fact her mother told her that she already knew that Abid was having an affair and acted as if Fauzia was overreacting. This was yet another incident which showed that Fauzia was not like all these other women; she had standards all of her own. Eventually Fauzia had no choice but to go back to the same house and this was yet another development which was covered superbly. Fauzia’s emotional goodbye and the way her mother in law greeted her said a great deal about everyone felt about the situation. For the first time, her younger brother expressed his support for Fauzia. Saba Qamar and Ali Kazmi’s phenomenal performance made their scenes even more realistic. Both of them have given exceptional performances in the play.

Baaghi Episode 7 Review - Impressive Performances

When Fauzia packed her bags to leave, I wasn’t expecting her to go back to Abid’s house but so far she has been shown as someone who does not take extreme measures until and unless she is left with absolutely no choice. Also, Fauzia has always been very “focused”, her main goal in life is to pursue a career in showbiz. Even when she decided to get married to Abid, the main motivation was the promise he made to her regarding her ambitions about working in showbiz some day. So far Fauzia did not get an opportunity to pursue her ambition but now for the first time she has an offer which she believes can change her life forever. I cannot praise Saba Qamar enough for enacting this role faultlessly on screen, she is the best thing about this play. Her overall look, from her wrinkled clothes to those cheap clips and the messed up hairstyle is right on point. (Alprazolam) The way her expressions and body language change with every situation makes her portrayal picture perfect. Saba Faisal and Seemi Raheel are also giving superb performances in this play and I must say that they simply get better with every episode.

Fauzia’s brother should have been given some screen time in tonight’s episode since he was one of those people in the house who was dead against her marriage. He has not made an appearance for quite some time now which is rather odd especially because there are already very few characters in the play. Overall, this was an intense and emotional episode of Baaghi and the first one which actually held my interest right till the end. The preview of the next episode was also interesting; I am waiting to find out what turn Fauzia’s life takes from here since she has absolutely no support from any of her family members and is all alone in the city!

Baaghi Episode 6 Review – Reality Checks

Tonight’s episode of Baaghi covered a period of more than a year in which Fauzia learned that Abid was never going to give her the freedom she needed to make her dreams come true. Her life also changed with the birth of her son because while she was busy taking care of him, Abid was busy having an affair. Even with all the rude shocks and reality checks Fauzia got in this one year, she did not resign to her fate and decided she was going to do whatever it took to make her dreams come true. Fauzia’s married life had done-to-death written all over it – a mother in law who was always complaining, a husband who was cheating on her and parents who wanted her to compromise. Just like everything else, this latest development was covered in a simple manner. Abid turned out to be a typical husband who believed that a woman’s sole purpose in life was to stay loyal to her husband and the husband had absolutely no obligations towards his wife. Gradually, Fauzia realized that all the promises Abid made to her were false.

Fauzia and her brother’s relationship was the perfect opportunity for the writer to show another side of Fauzia’s personality but unfortunately these two did not get a lot of screen time together in these 6 episodes. Tonight too the scene in which Fauzia questioned her brother about his studies was confusing because he complained that he got bad marks because Fauzia was no longer teaching him. Later on, she also helped him with a complicated subject like science. Wasn’t Fauzia supposed to be uneducated? This particular aspect is seriously confusing because 5 weeks back Fauzia’s biggest deprivation was that she never went to school and now the scenes in this and previous episode suggest that she went to school or perhaps college! This is a major loophole which leads to confusion. I guess she went to school after all and that entire conversation between her and her mother shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Also, I am wondering why someone like her was making parandas to earn a living when she could have taught children to earn a livelihood.

Baaghi Episode 6 Review - Reality Checks

Fauzia’s state of mind however was the only different aspect of tonight’s episode. For the first time Fauzia had a real conversation with herself and this aspect was covered really well. She thought about all the dreams she had, what she expected from this marriage, what could she do now to get what she always wanted and also considered her limitations. Fauzia also dreamed of a better future for her child because she did not want him to end up like her. Fauzia’s reaction to the news that her husband was cheating on her was also covered superbly. Her reaction was completely in line with her character and the fact that even with all her fearlessness at the end of the day, she was helpless was highlighted clearly.

Saba Qamar has given a phenomenal performance in this play. Her overall look and her acting is faultless. Ali Kazmi has also translated his character brilliantly on screen. The story and the screenplay however so far is average. All the men in the play have the same mindset with the exception of the Chaudhry who obviously isn’t a leading character in the play and Fauzia’s relationship with many of the characters directly linked to her hasn’t been explored properly. I have said this before but I feel the need to say this every time I watch a new episode of Baaghi; the characters are one-dimensional which is why so far Baaghi hasn’t exactly won me over. I watch every new episode of Baaghi with the hope that this episode will be the one but the overall impact of the story and the characters isn’t as powerful as one would expect from a drama serial which was promoted like it was the next big thing.

Baaghi Episode 5 Review – New Beginning!

This episode opened with Nazia’s father welcoming her husband inside the house and being really content that she was finally going to go home. Nazia’s conversation with Fauzia in the room and Fauzia’s take on Nazia’s majburis once again highlighted how differently both these women looked at life. This scene did not reveal anything new about their personalities and was yet another scene which showed Fauzia taking a stand for her sister. All of Fauzia’s scenes in her own house circle around the same topics and only one aspect of her personality which has made this entire scenario highly repetitive and even with Saba Qamar’s exceptional performance, so far the character itself does not have anything grand to offer. I find myself interested in finding out what is going to happen in Fauzia’s life next but I don’t find myself looking forward to finding out more about her character because the writer is continuously highlighting only one aspect of Fauzia’s personality. Having said that, the fact that Fauzia and Abid were shown happily married for at least a few weeks was a good beginning to this track. I am also glad that the writer did not make a bechari out of Fauzia even though her mother in law was continuously complaining.

Most of the scenes in this episode covered how Abid showered Fauzia with as much love as she had expected he would give her except for that one scene which seemed slightly out of context as well. Also, there were a lot of scenes in which Abid’s mother openly showed that she was not happy with Fauzia although she took up the household responsibilities. Seemi Raheel is always impressive in such roles therefore it does not come as a surprise that she is performing brilliantly in this drama as well. On the other hand, I am watching Ali Kazmi playing a role like this one for the first time and I must say that he has totally nailed Abid’s character. So far, Fauzia has been shown as someone who is confident and outspoken but she is dedicated and good at heart. She wants to enjoy her own life and at the same time she also speaks up for others when she feels that a person is being wronged. Overall, Fauzia’s character is simple and does not have a lot of layers. I wonder if the growth of her character will be covered convincingly in the upcoming episodes or not because so far the character isn’t etched-out in a way that you instantly connect with her. Her relationship with all the characters around her is almost the same too and there isn’t a single character she is emotionally involved with in a manner which would have an impact. Abid’s mother’s comments about him suggested that he wasn’t responsible or dependable.

Baaghi Episode 5 Review - New Beginning!

This episode of Baaghi was definitely better than the last few. This new beginning in Fauzia’s life is also a chance for the writer and director to explore new dimensions of Fauzia’s character, if there are any that is! It seems like an extra marital affair is going to the reason why Abid and Fauzia drift apart. I am wondering how someone like Fauzia will react to such a discovery and what will she do when the marriage starts falling apart. Apart from Saba Qamar’s performance, I especially liked her outfits in tonight’s episode because they went so well with the character she is playing. She definitely looks and acts the character. Her dress in the last scene also suggested that she had been married for few months now. Love the OST of this show!

Baaghi Episode 4 Review – Story Moves Forward

The story finally moved forward with this episode and this had to be the most interesting episode of Baaghi so far since it covered something other than showing the male mentality and Fauzia’s rebellious nature. Chaudhry turned out to be the only male character in this drama so far who took a stand for Fauzia and looked after her interests. All the other men in the drama are the same which is one of the main reasons why I don’t find these characters appealing. Either these men want to marry Fauzia or they want to control her, therefore Chaudhry’s character was like a breath of fresh air. I was expecting Fauzia’s character to be slightly more grey; someone who had flaws but at the same time had some good qualities as well. So far, Fauzia is not one of those characters, she is sensible and even this recent step taken by her was not impulsive; she tried to do everything she could to stop this marriage before she took this extreme step. Fauzia is young and therefore although she feels that she made the right decision even after Abid clearly told her that he was not going to do anything against the wishes of their families and his mother also showed her displeasure with this marriage. She was unable to judge Abid properly because of his “profile”. Saba Qamar was absolutely brilliant in this episode in particular. I especially liked her acting in the scene covering Fauzia’s conversation with the Chaudrani in which she tells her about Abid’s proposal.

Baaghi Episode 4 Review - Story Moves Forward

Although Nadia Afghan has once again nailed her character in this drama but all the scenes covering her and her husband’s track are getting monotonous. The fact that her husband does not have a mind of his own and she is a drama queen has been well-established by now therefore there is no point in giving this particular track so much screen time. It was good to see Fauzia’s mother defending her when she was not around and she actually looked happy when Abid’s mother came for the engagement ceremony. The engagement scene had to be my most favorite scene because of the way it was shot. The way Abid’s mother looked at those pictures on the wall and the manner in which Fauzia’s feelings were shown was right on point. Fauzia knew exactly what she was looking at and what must have been going through her mind but even then she faked a smile every time Abid’s mother looked at her.

Baaghi Episode 4 Review - Story Moves Forward

Saba Qamar, Naeem Tahir, Saba Faisal, Irfan Khoosat and Nadia Afghan performed exceptionally well in this episode. Overall, this was a decent episode which was somewhat unpredictable as well. The director has managed to translate rural life in an apt manner but the characters so far do not have the kind of presence which truly makes an impact. I also think the script is quite plain especially when you compare it to some recent dramas which covered problems faced by women in a male dominated society. I hope that Fauzia’s character development is covered convincingly in the upcoming episodes. Will Fauzia be turned into another bechari or does her character have more to offer? I am waiting to find out. The preview of the next episode showed Abid giving a “reality check” to Fauzia much sooner than anyone would have anticipated.

Baaghi Episode 3 Review – Highs & Lows!

This was another episode of Baaghi which showed Fauzia making plans to live a life which other girls around her could not even dream of. Fauzia Batool does not believe in limiting her dreams and plans because people around her expect her to act differently and this has to be one trait of her character which has been reinforced repeatedly in all these 3 episodes. Fauzia’s husband-to-be Sajjid has been shown as a characterless man who wants to “own” her more than anything else therefore Fauzia’s instincts in that particular aspect are absolutely right. Another reason why Fauzia does not want to get married to him is that she wants to marry someone who will give her the freedom to pursue her dreams of having a career in showbiz some day. Although Fauzia said multiple times in tonight’s episode that she was not going to allow anyone to touch her but when her brother hit her, there wasn’t much she could do about it. This incident however made her even more rebellious and as a consequence she decided to take matters in her own hand. Fauzia’s conversation with Abid showed she was only going to consider him as her future husband if he guaranteed that he will let her live her life, the way she wants to. Fauzia likes Abid too and probably thinks he is more liberal therefore she would much rather take a chance with him then let her brother and sister in law in particular make this decision for her. Fauzia trusts Abid more because she does not know yet that he is just as capable of lying as anyone else around her!

Baaghi Episode 3 Review - Highs & Lows!

In the opening scene Fauzia said to her mother that she did not want to get married because she wanted to study and her mother said, “bara prh liya hei tunay” but in another scene of the first episode when Fauzia was seeing her brother off to school she says to her mother, “wese kya tha agr mujhe bhi thora prha deti.” which basically showed that she never went to school! The incidents leading to Fauzia’s decision to elope with Abid were covered convincingly. Even though Saba Qamar’s performance is beyond brilliant but I don’t find myself looking forward to Fauzia’s journey perhaps because a lot of the main twists in the story were revealed not only in the promos but they are even shown in the beginning when the drama starts! The viewers know exactly what the outcome of this marriage will be although Abid seems like the perfect candidate right now. So far I feel that the writer is trying to show that had Fauzia been given the opportunity to educate herself and pursue those dreams which were unconventional but worth a shot then she might have had a very different life.

This episode was directed really well and all the actors are phenomenal in their respective roles. Nadia Afghan and Saba Qamar in particular have nailed their roles. The story however has nothing grand to offer which is why even with some spectacular performances you do not feel for the characters the way one would if the characters had more to offer. Although there are enough characters in the story but their tracks do not offer variety or novelty. This is going to be another drama which will highlight the double standards and hypocrisy of the society and so far there is nothing impressive about the situations or the characters that are being shown to highlight these issues. A lot of dialogues and situations in every episode show how the standards for men and women are different. The story moved forward with this episode and the preview of the next episode showed that Fauzia eloped with Abid on the day of their nikkah. Baaghi doesn’t really give you a lot to write about since the story is so far simple and the characters don’t have a lot of layers. Also, there is nothing exciting about the drama which would keep you at the edge of your seat.

Baaghi Episode 24 Review – Overload of Majbooris

Every week I tune into this drama hoping that it will give me something interesting to watch and talk about but Baaghi has turned out to be one of the most overrated dramas of this season. The script isn’t just dull and repetitive but also lacks depth altogether, the dialogues are too plain, the scenarios never have anything new to offer, the focus has been entirely on Kanwal’s character yet her character is one-dimensional just like all the other characters in the play and the fact that the writer has left no stone unturned to plead Kanwal’s case makes this drama even more unappealing. The cautious approach of the writer is the biggest reason for this lackluster script. Also, the pace of the drama is painfully slow and the scenes covering Kanwal’s videos are stretched for no reason. Kanwal’s character is more annoying than interesting and the screenplay does not have the kind of flow you would expect it to have since I expected better from a writer like Umera Ahmed. There are dramas in which every character has a story to tell and then there are dramas like Baaghi in which even the leading characters don’t have a definite story. Kanwal for instance has been tagged as “baaghi” for some reason yet her life is constantly being driven by the people around her, her strengths have been relegated to the background and her weaknesses have been accentuated to such an extent that her character has lost all its appeal.

This episode showed how Kanwal’s younger brother had changed over the years and it is easy to tell where this track is leading. Kanwal and Shehryar have grown closer in all these years but their conversations still revolve around the same issues! Even after all this time Shehryar still asks Kanwal the same question he was asking few years back!! Kanwal’s pappi pait dialogues fell completely flat since the overload of majbooris in every episode doesn’t help her track in any way.

Baaghi Episode 24 Review - Overload of Majbooris

At the end of the day we all watch dramas because we want to be entertained and there are a lot of dramas with serious storylines which keep the viewers engaged but for me Baaghi is definitely not such a drama. Saba Qamar has given better performances in her career and has definitely played more meaty roles as well. Watching her mimic Qandeel Baloch is just plain sad because she is capable of so much more. I feel that the producers completely failed to tell Qandeel’s story in an impactful manner because they were too busy “covering up” for some reason! This drama is definitely a winner in the ratings race but personally I have always found it really difficult to sit through almost all the episodes of Baaghi. It is getting more annoying with every passing episode and therefore this will be my last review of Baaghi. I would like to thank all those wonderful readers who read my reviews and gave me their feedback even when they were not following the drama.

Keep reading and commenting :)

Baaghi Episode 22 Review – Going Around In Circles!

Baaghi isn’t the kind of drama which gives you a lot to talk about since every episode reinforces the same messages which have been put forward repeatedly in every single episode for the past ten weeks or so. Every episode of Baaghi shows how different people whether they are strangers or members of her family, exploit Kanwal. Kanwal Baloch came to the city looking for a career because working in showbiz was her dream and also because she wanted to have a better life but now she is simply doing whatever it takes to help her family members financially and otherwise. So far, the writer hasn’t shown the actual nature of Kanwal’s work therefore I am assuming that she is earning all this money from her videos.

Kanwal ended her relationship with Shehryar after realizing that having a “normal” relationship might just be a dream for her. The “favor” Kanwal gave the police officer so that he would free her brother from prison had to be the most forced and unnecessary development in this episode which is why all the other developments which were linked with this one appeared to be pointless. Why didn’t Kanwal turn to Shehryar for help? She could have bribed this officer as well or asked someone else for help. Just like every week, the writer yet again put her in a situation which would highlight just how majboor she was. While I can relate to how the pressure her family is putting on her would push her to do something extreme, I cannot understand why this woman who has come this far is still so naive that she will allow anyone to use her! Unfortunately, Kanwal Baloch has been turned into a weak character and her story is going around in circles. Shehryar’s character hasn’t added much to the story either other than showing how Kanwal had to let go of a perfect companion because she wanted to focus on helping her family.

Baaghi Episode 22 Review - Going Around In Circles!

Kanwal’s bhabi proposed that she should go to the village with her where she could see her son, it would have been so much better if Kanwal put forward this idea herself. Kanwal’s brother’s attitude towards her has changed completely because he needs financial help from her constantly. Right now the focus is entirely on Kanwal’s relationship with her family and mainly on her brother because of obvious reasons.

Like every other episode of Baaghi, this one too was shouting out loud “please feel for Kanwal Baloch” but just like always I had a really difficult time staying awake while watching it. This drama lacks depth, intensity and enough content to cover 20 plus episodes. It has been dragging for weeks now and the fact that the story is highly predictable makes it even more difficult to sit through this show. Kanwal’s scenes are the same in every single episode. Pakistani drama makers have made plenty of quality dramas in the recent past and there are some really good dramas on air even now which highlight the problems faced by women in a male dominated society therefore Baaghi is definitely not the first or the last play to highlight these issues! The fact that it isn’t doing so too convincingly doesn’t make it the best one either!

There was a time when Pakistani writers were focusing entirely on how women are exploited by their in laws, bechari bahu was the most TRP generating topic but now it seems that sexual exploitation has taken the place of bechari bahu. While there are plenty of dramas which are doing justice to the topic and addressing it in a proper manner but there are many more which are using it to gain attention and popularity and excelling at it too!

Baaghi Episode 21 Review – Baaghi or Majboor?

This was yet another episode of Baaghi which showed how Kanwal Baloch is being abused and victimized every step of the way. Although she talked about women empowerment, which to her means allowing women to do whatever they want to do and criticized men for their double standards yet more than once she has allowed men to use her whenever it suited her “needs”! Although the writer has tried to show that every time she does something which does not conform to the social norms or moral values it is because she is majboor but somehow her majbooris most often don’t make a lot of sense. For instance in tonight’s episode, she could have easily asked one of her “clients” to help her out or Shehryar would have happily done everything in his power to bail her brother out had she asked him but since she is an “empowered” woman therefore she went there herself even though she is quite “famous” for her videos now! Yes, this development also showed how corrupt our police officers are but the fact that this incident could easily have been avoided cannot be ignored. Kanwal also had the option of calling Shehryar when things were not going as she planned but she didn’t do that either.

On the one hand they are showing that Kanwal is so famous now that she hides her face when she goes out in public so that no one recognizes her and on the other hand her siblings who have seen her videos cannot tell that the girl in the videos is her! This had to be the most unconvincing part of this recent episode! Even if someone wears heavy make-up, their family members will surely recognize them! Also, once again everyone in Kanwal’s family was shown using her in some way or the other. All of them want money or things from her but apparently even the brother who once loved her does not feel the same way about her, Kanwal however is really emotional about her family and everything that she is doing for them is out of love. Even Kanwal’s bhabhi who is constantly asking her for huge favors was shown backbiting about her. Kanwal has been shown as someone who has made some terrible choices in life but she has never even thought about harming anyone and easily believes people.

Baaghi Episode 21 Review - Baaghi or Majboor?

Kanwal’s reaction when Shehryar gave her that ring showed that she always wanted to be loved the way Shehryar loves her and this was something special for her. Shehryar’s scene with his mother later on however showed that these two can never have a future together. Shehryar’s mother did not like Kanwal’s boldness for obvious reasons and he isn’t the kind of person who would be able to plead his case strongly. Also, the preview of the next episode showed that Kanwal’s majbooris perhaps pushed her to break up with Shehryar. This drama should have been titled “Majboor” and not Baaghi! Baaghi is someone who is strong and determined and does things on his or her own terms and conditions! Kanwal’s story on the other hand has been strongly driven by her majbooris. Strength does not lie in forgetting the difference between right and wrong to fulfill the needs of the people you love, it lies in making your own path and not letting your circumstances dictate how your life will turn out to be ultimately.

Every episode of Baaghi is the same, it has to be one of the most predictable and overrated dramas of recent times. Yes, Saba Qamar’s performance is impressive but the story isn’t the least bit impressive.

Baaghi Episode 20 Review – The End Justifies The Means???

Just like every other episode of Baaghi the viewers were not only shown what a perfect daughter and sister Kanwal was but different characters in the play kept on reasserting this notion repeatedly. So, I hope everyone out there watching this show has learned the lesson we were taught in this episode – daughters like Kanwal are a blessing – this would mean that all those women out there who are using unethical means to help their families financially are heroes about whom books should be written and a biopic should be dedicated to each one of them! However those daughters of the soil like Marium Mukhtiar for instance do not deserve anything more than a telefilm and there are so many more who actually are role models and did a great deal and I hope that some day our drama makers will be making biopic about them too! Once again, Kanwal’s sole concern was her father and in order to make Kanwal look like a perfect human being everyone else around her was yet again transformed into either a hypocrite or a manipulator!

The fact that this story doesn’t have substance is also apparent from the way this drama is being promoted. For the longest time Osman Khalid Butt’s entry was used as a “bait” and this time around Qandeel Baloch’s controversial dance video was used as a way to attract the viewers. The developments in the story have hardly been used to attract the viewers so that they would tune into the show. Irfan Khoosat, Saba Faisal and Nadia Afghan’s performances were remarkable in this episode. Saba Qamar is a little too casual now and her character is predictable and boring. Shehryar was shown worrying sick about Kanwal in every single scene and although he feels attracted towards Kanwal but he is confused for obvious reasons. Kanwal likes him but she has more important things in life to worry about which is probably the reason why she has completely forgotten about her son as well!!

Baaghi Episode 20 Review - The End Justifies The Means???

Once again this episode showed that Kanwal was forced into doing something she didn’t agree with and she is more than willing to do whatever she needs to do to earn money because apparently there is nothing wrong with it as long as she is doing all of it to help her parents! All of a sudden Kanwal’s actions have been justified more than before and Kanwal isn’t even enjoying the “celebrity status” and the money she is getting as a result! As far as I remember, the writer said that there was going to be a lesson in this drama and they were not going to glorify Qandeel Baloch in any way but so far there are no lessons and they are most certainly glorifying Qandeel Baloch as well.

All I can say is that I have seen much better dramas which covered the problems girls who support their families face, Thakan was one such drama in which Saba Qamar played the lead. It had a much better storyline, the characters were far more appealing and the producers didn’t use any shortcuts to get ratings. Also, Saba Qamar has played more solid roles in her career, her role as Kanwal Baloch is surely not the highlight of her career! Even though I never had huge expectations from this drama but even then it has been a terrible disappointment in more ways than one.

Baaghi Episode 2 Review – More Of The Same!

This episode opened with Fauzia Batool “entertaining” her friends and later on being left alone to explain herself to the Chaudhry. Saba owned her character in tonight’s episode and especially did really well in scenes in which her character went from being dead serious to somewhat comic. Like the time she ran away instead of answering the Chaudhry’s questions. Fauzia’s sister Nazia’s argument with her husband and the outcome was yet another one of those incidents which showed the mindset of the men in the village and people’s general opinion about Fauzia. Just like the previous episode this one too had plenty of scenes which showed that with the exception of Fauzia’s father all the men believed in having their own way and did not give their women the respect they deserved. Fauzia kept on telling everyone around her that she was not going to end up like her sister and that she will make her own destiny. She dreams of living a life different from the one all the other women around her are living.

Baaghi Episode 2 Review - More Of The Same!

This episode focused on the problems in Fauzia’s house; financial and otherwise and showed that Fauzia’s dreams to make it big someday kept her happy. She has been shown as a free spirited person who isn’t afraid of speaking her mind. Fauzia’s brother does not have a mind of his own and his wife dictates everything to him, definitely a character we have seen in drama many times before too. Nadia Afghan is a versatile actress who nails every character assigned to her therefore it does not come as a surprise that she is playing this role really well too. Her character however doesn’t have a lot to offer, another character which has been-there-seen-that written all over it! Abid is also interested in getting married to Fauzia but she hasn’t made up her mind just yet. Fauzia’s father however finally succumbed to the pressure and agreed to marry her to Sajjid (yawn!)

Baaghi Episode 2 Review - More Of The Same!

Just like many other dramas nowadays, half of the story has already been revealed in the promos and even the scenes shown in the beginning of every episode clearly show who Fauzia will end up getting married to eventually therefore this is one of the few reasons why this track isn’t really appealing. Also, all the dialogues and situations which cover Fauzia’s character are pretty much the same. Although Saba Qamar’s performance is right on point but the character itself is one-dimensional and lacks depth. It would have been so much better if the viewers got to see how Fauzia was fighting with her insecurities and fears subconsciously instead of showing only her lively and outspoken side. Surely someone with her circumstances would have tons to think about. So far, Baaghi doesn’t have anything new or exciting to offer. Some of the scenes in tonight’s episode could easily have been chopped down especially those involving the fights in Fauzia’s house. The episode was slow paced and for the most part boring.

The preview of the next episode showed Abid pressurizing his mother to go to Fauzia’s house with his proposal and Fauzia told Sajjid off for good. Overall, this episode was strictly okay. So far, the rural setting has been shown flawlessly in Baaghi and some of the performances are brilliant but the characters and their stories are not as appealing as one would expect them to be especially because there was so much hype surrounding this play. This drama reminds me of Shehrnaz, the only difference so far is that Shehrnaz had a better start and went downhill after a few episodes. Right now the script lacks novelty and it is quite plain, waiting to see if things change in the upcoming episodes.

Baaghi Episode 19 Review – Plot Holes Galore!

Every episode of Baaghi has some development which contradicts something else we have seen in an earlier episode and this one too had at least two such developments to its credit! This episode of Baaghi showed Shehryar’s growing attachment with Kanwal and it also covered Kanwal’s not so happy reunion with her family. Kanwal’s “khara/sachapan” was reinforced in tonight’s episode as well and for the first time it looked like the writer was showing that Kanwal decided to cross the “boundaries” she had set for herself not because of her majburis but because she believed this was the only way she was going to earn money and perhaps fame. The preview of the next episode however showed that she had not crossed any boundaries just yet and will only do so when her family is in dire need of money!!!! So basically someone gave her all that money only to give him company in Dubai!? That does not make any sense at all. In an attempt to show Kanwal as a woman of principle, the writer has shown scenarios which are just plain illogical.

Baaghi Episode 19 Review - Plot Holes Galore!

There are so many plot holes in the story that it is impossible for me to connect to or feel for the characters. These glaring flaws tend to get noticed even when you’re not giving this drama your undivided attention. While Kanwal showered everyone with gifts and proudly announced that she had spent all the money she had earned from her trip, I wondered why she wasn’t saving to get her child back through court? I clearly remember that the only reason why Kanwal set out to earn money by any means possible and begged to get a job she had vowed never to accept was because she wanted to earn enough money to fight a legal battle to win the custody of her son. That is how the writer justified Kanwal’s actions although her actions so far don’t even need any justification because she hasn’t done anything outrageous but even then the writer is constantly and desperately pleading her case! This is the most off-putting part of this drama – the lack of honest storytelling. Kanwal’s character, her actions and the justifications contradict each other over and over again and I still cannot understand her line of work! If she isn’t doing something which is either immoral or illegal how is she earning so much money? Are there really people out there who will pay a huge amount of money to girls for giving them company?

I have always maintained that Kanwal’s character and story could have been far more logical and appealing if she was shown as someone who wanted to get famous and rich because that is what would have made her happy! But because that is not a nice thing to want therefore the writer has done everything in her power to blame Fauzia’s circumstances for her current situation and whatever she is going to do in the future. This story does not even show that a talented person cannot make it big in showbiz without using shortcuts because Kanwal was never shown as a talented individual. Shehryar’s character hasn’t contributed much to the story and it is sad watching Osman Khalid Butt playing such roles over and over again. I hope we can one day see him playing a role which has more substance to it, he is constantly taking up roles in which his over-dependence on the women in his life make him a bechara. He is hardly seen on television anymore but even then lately he has made some awful choices.

Baaghi Episode 18 Review – Slow-Paced & Repititive

This was yet another episode of Baaghi which showed multiple people trying to exploit Kanwal Baloch’s “fame”. Kanwal Baloch has been shown as someone who has great pride and believes in working hard even though she is getting fame from her facebook videos but that particular shortcut is also been shown as something she does to “vent out”. Therefore it can safely be concluded that Kanwal never made these videos to get famous but she made them to share her views with anyone who is interested in hearing them! However, her get-up for her “special appearance” on social media and her body language etc somehow does not count as cheap tactics to get fame! I have always felt that the writer has tried extra hard not only to make a victim out of this character but is also constantly making excuses for Qandeel Baloch! In a way the writer is justifying her actions by showing that she was never looking for the kind of attention she got and also proving that she was a really naive girl who didn’t know the first thing about being diplomatic.

Baaghi Episode 18 Review - Slow-Paced & Repititive

Kanwal Baloch’s meeting with those people who came to interview her was the biggest joke! Someone who has been trying so hard to get into the industry should have jumped at the opportunity to meet someone who could possibly help her in furthering her career. Kanwal Baloch’s response to the call however was casual and her attitude with those people even more careless. Basically, everything we have seen so far prove that Kanwal speaks her mind and holds her self-respect very dear yet she isn’t out there looking for a real job yet she can afford a fairly decent lifestyle!

Kanwal’s brother yet again got into a fight because of her appearance on television this time around. Even though Kanwal left her family a long time back but she is influencing her family in more ways than one. Everything has drastically changed and her family is in dire need of money…something which has been shown over and over again! Yes, we get the message, can we please move on? The preview of the next episode suggested that her family will need money more than ever and that is probably why she will eventually accept that offer from Goher!

Shehryar’s character turned out to be a “dude in distress”! It is disappointing to see Osman Khalid Butt being typecast in these bechara roles. Shehryar has his own dukhi background therefore he isn’t a knight in shining armor but someone who also needs saving!

The story is going around in circles and the drama is extremely slow paced. The scenes covering Kanwal’s journey and her track in general is highly repetitive. Right from the beginning Baaghi’s script has been too plain, the characters are unappealing and the story lacks depth and vision. No amount of star power can make up for a weak script and poor characterizations.

Baaghi Episode 17 Review – Twisting The Truth!!

This was yet another episode of Baaghi which showed that Qandeel Baloch wasn’t looking for the kind of attention she got after her Pakistan Idol audition video went viral. There wasn’t a lot of rona dhona and becharapan in this episode which was great but the way the prince charming entered Kanwal’s life was somewhat weird! The fascination with which Shehryar looked at Kanwal and his eagerness to help her showed that he came from a completely different world! He is affluent, more polished and obviously extremely sensitive and caring since he actually felt for Kanwal while watching the Pakistan Idol video and didn’t think twice before helping her! This episode covered the general sentiment of the public after this video went viral and its effect on Kanwal Baloch. So far, the viewers have been shown that every time Kanwal gets negative attention instead of taking a back seat she reacts on social media and so far that is the only bhagawat she has done! Instead of staying quite, she posts videos in which she expresses her feeling in her own bizarre way (which comes naturally to her) but only after crying over all the comments people passed on her already!

After her parents, husband, her first employee, the care taker of the shelter home, the host of the reality show and the judges of the singing audition, those people who use social media are responsible for Kanwal’s actions. Every time Kanwal reads negative comments about herself on social media, she makes another video – not because she wants to get famous but because she wants to express herself ;) So basically, everything Kanwal has done so far has just given her fame even though she never planned to get famous in this way! Watching Kanwal worry about her family seeing the video was the final nail in the coffin! Kanwal’s character so far is confusing to say the least! When Goher called her, she liked the fact that she was in a position to tell him off which suggested that she knew that these videos and comments had brought her the fame she always wanted. If Kanwal was shown making these videos to cash in on the fame and attention she was getting, it would have made a lot more sense.

Baaghi Episode 17 Review - Twisting The Truth!!

Watching someone like Kanwal worrying about log kya kahenge just doesn’t add up! If you watch Qandeel’s actual video, she was crying because she said she had told her parents she was going for audition and now they will be disappointed! It is funny how the actual facts have been twisted to make Qandeel look like someone who had absolutely no support from her family members. Qandeel Baloch was a smart woman who knew how to bag public’s attention and how to make the most of it but Kanwal has been shown as a naive woman who is getting attention even though she is not asking for it!

This episode also covered how Kanwal’s father reacted when she sent the money and how the rest of the family felt about it. Abid’s business is also going downhill because of obvious reasons so basically everyone who didn’t support Kanwal is in financial crisis for some reason or the other. Shehryar is the first good man in this drama and his first impression suggests that he will be a little too good like all the other characters in this drama which are black and white!

Kanwal’s story moved to the next phase with this episode, she is now popular and will start getting more offers. The preview of the next episode showed that the tables have turned and Goher will now get in contact with Kanwal once again even after the way she told him off. The only reason why someone like Shehryar would fall for Kanwal is because he feels sorry for her! Even after coming this far does Kanwal need a man to save her?

Baaghi Episode 16 Review – Kanwal, the bechari!

Tonight’s episode of Baaghi yet again showed how Kanwal Baloch continued to find ways to become a “star” but failed to do so. Basically, the viewers are being shown that Kanwal is living two completely different lives, she has ‘real’ struggles to deal with while she isn’t faking a different personality when she is on social media. She is not being allowed to listen to her son’s voice even and she is not getting the kind of work she wants. So far, the attention she is getting is negative, something she doesn’t like since she is still looking for acceptance. Like every other episode of Baaghi, this one too had plenty of scenes which could have been chopped down. There is no denying the fact that Saba Qamar is an amazing actress but making her copy Qandeel Baloch to an extent that some of the scenes actually look like a parody wasn’t a wise decision! Sitting through these scenes was tough since there wasn’t anything even remotely likeable about this side of Kanwal’s personality. This was the first episode in which the writer (reluctantly) showed Kanwal resorting to shortcuts for getting attention but it was primarily due to the advices her friend gave her which once again exempted Kanwal Baloch of all responsibility!

One of the many reasons why I find it really hard to connect to this character is that although this woman left her house and has been on her own for so long yet she has always been shown as an innocent and naive individual who has no idea what the consequences of her actions would be. Kanwal could have been shown as a street smart woman who planned these things on her own. I have always felt that in an attempt to make people around her responsible for whatever she has done since day one the writer has failed to give Kanwal a definite personality. Also, there has been absolutely no character development so far – when will this baghawat start? Although Kanwal has a more modern outlook now but she isn’t half as strong as she was when she was Fauzia Batool. The dialogues and conversation about people being hypocrites was another attempt to make Kanwal Baloch look like a dhood ki dhuli hui bechari aurat – a portrayal which very often clashes with everything Kanwal has done so far! I find it really hard to see her as someone who is struggling to earn a living.

Baaghi Episode 16 Review - Kanwal, the bechari!

Abid’s character unfortunately is just as one-dimensional as that of Kanwal and his scenes are highly repetitive. This episode followed the same pattern as the previous episode, most of the episode was dedicated to Kanwal, a scene which showed Abid showing his true colors, another scene in which Kanwal’s brother was smoking and one which showed how Kanwal’s family was struggling financially. The scenes covering Kanwal’s facebook videos were painfully long and didn’t add much to the story. So far this drama also promotes the ultimate cliché that there are hardly any good men in the world!! Will Osman Khalid Butt’s character be the first positive male character in the drama? I sure do hope so! At this point I am sick and tired of watching Kanwal’s weirdness as well as her rona dhona! She was a bechari as Fauzia and now she an even bigger bechari as Kanwal!

Baaghi Episode 15 Review – Two Steps Back!

This episode covered all the tracks in the story therefore it was much better than the previous few episodes which focused entirely on Kanwal’s failed attempts to start a singing/modeling career. Tonight’s episode opened with Kanwal swallowing her pride and asking Goher for an apology. Kanwal’s changed attitude made perfect sense – she had now realized that she could only get “work” and earn money if she accepted Goher as her boss and did exactly what she was asked to do. She was however once again disappointed when Goher did not pay her as generously as he did before. The reason for this was obvious – he had “invested” a lot in her and did not get the returns he was hoping for initially and most importantly before Goher needed Kanwal to work with him but this time around she needs him more than he needs her. Goher knows that he doesn’t have to go the extra mile to win this girl over therefore he did not pay her as much as he did the last time she worked with him. This entire development was covered convincingly. Saba Qamar translated the change in Kanwal’s approach flawlessly on screen and Khalid Malik has been acting brilliantly too. The actor playing Goher’s role is also performing brilliantly, definitely looking forward to watching him in more dramas.

Ruby and Abid’s track was a perfect example of what goes around comes around. Ruby thought Abid will never cheat on her but he has started treating her the way he was treating Fauzia when he was having an affair with Ruby. While it was good to see Ruby paying for what she had done, I couldn’t help but wonder if Abid was ever going to pay for his mistakes as well! Ali Kazmi and the actress playing Ruby’s role nailed this scene. This episode also covered the financial problems Kanwal’s parents were facing which will probably be the basic reason why, they will ultimately start relying on her for financial assistance.

Baaghi Episode 15 Review - Two Steps Back!

Once again a lot of screen time was given to Kanwal’s interactions with her “clients” which I felt was rather unnecessary. Kanwal’s changed attitude towards her “work” could have been covered in a short scene as well. Saba Qamar’s makeover in this particular scene wasn’t up to the mark at all. Yasir Nawaz’s acting however was the most interesting part of this particular development. Kanwal’s conversation with Salman once again showed that she didn’t want negative attention. This is one aspect of Kanwal’s personality which is not in line with Qandeel Baloch’s actual personality since from her very first appearance on television she was looking for attention – it didn’t really matter what kind of attention it was! Being unorthodox was Qandeel’s USP and she knew that – she sold her weirdness because it worked best for her and also because that was her only “talent” yet Kanwal has been shown as someone who is not looking for such attention.

15 episodes later Fauzia has a different name and a new identity but she is still struggling. In this episode she found out that getting attention on social media was far more easy than turning to electronic media to get attention. Now that she knows that Goher will not be paying her enough money she will look for other ways to earn money.

Overall, this was a much better episode and there were some scenes which were touching but as a whole Kanwal’s story doesn’t have a lot going for it since she is one of those many victimized female protagonists we have seen on screen a million times before too!!
