Sonya Hussayn, a proven talented actress has been missing from our television screens since quite a long time. She has assayed some very challenging roles on television like in her drama serials ‘Don’t Jealous’ and ‘Nazo’ but now she is no where to be seen as she has kept herself away from acting. In an interview with Express Tribune, when she was asked what’s kept her away from the small screen, she gave her reasons.
She said:
‘I have indeed come a long way from where I began, I know that for a fact and at this point in my career, I don’t want to take up something that’s conventional or something that I know I’ve seen before,”
She also said:
“You see hundreds of serials are made in a year and I understand that that’s important to sustain a 24-hour transmission, but just because of that, will I compromise on the kind of work I want to do? Of course I wouldn’t!”
Sonya also shared that she would be appearing in a drama serial shortly, which is penned by Mohsin Ali and produced by Fahad Mustafa. The name of the serial is ‘Pakeeza’ in which she has been cast along with Nadia Khan, Sami Khan and Saba Hameed. She has also disclosed about her character in ‘Pakeeza’.
”Pakeeza raises a very relevant debate. It addresses the adversity of social media and how it can conveniently ruin a girl’s and her family’s life in our society,”
She also shared:
“Pakeeza, after which the serial’s been named as of yet, is a very real character and even though I’ve been fortunate enough to have never gone through what she does, I do know of incidents where girls have been manipulated like this which is just not acceptable. Why is the girl to be blamed for having the freedom she deserves? I think it’s something that hasn’t been addressed, but it must be.”
She said that she has started shooting for ‘Pakeeza’ just a week before and she is confident that the script is extremely gripping and holds numerous subliminal messages for both, men and women of the society. She further added:
”It’s on the social taboo of how dangerous social media can be. It is a disturbing story, but I can assure that it won’t make the viewer uncomfortable.”
Apart from Pakeeza, Sonya has been working on Imran Malik’s feature film, ‘Azaadi’. The movie is patriotic, action-thriller and will portray the struggle of Kashmir’s independence, while also highlighting feminism through Sonya’s character. The movie also stars Moammar Rana, Javed Sheikh and Nadeem Baig. While sharing her views about ‘Azaadi’ with Express Tribune she said:
”It’s a beautiful film, that’s been shot exceptionally well across the northern region of Pakistan and also a spell was done in Thailand. In a nutshell, it offers quality cinematic experience, while also awakening the inner patriot in you. Playing the protagonist, I couldn’t have asked for a better film debut.”
Sonya’s comeback on television is long awaited and hopefully she will deliver the best as she always do. We wish her luck for her upcoming projects on both television and big screen.
The young twin sisters Aiman Khan and Minal Khan from our drama industry are two extremely attractive young artists who have got all the attitude to flaunt their beauty in front of camera. The siblings have been recently spotted posing for Phatyma Khan’s Festive Collection. The two fresh beauties looked stunning in the gorgeous attires wore from the collection. Have a look on few pictures from their photoshoot.
After decades and decades of wait, it seems that Pakistani industry is heading somewhere. While a lot of our entertainment industry and advertisements have been overshadowed by Indians internationally, now is the time to give some credit to the Pakistanis working to earn the name.
It is currently been made clear that Pakistani models and celebrities are being preferred over Indian counterparts by International and National brands. According to the sources, big agencies and Multinational Corporations are busy signing Pakistani artists due to stunning performances and continuous Indian hostility.
The names that have come upfront and have currently roped in some big projects include Saba Qamar, Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Armeena Rana, Mawra Hocane, Urwa Hocane, Ali Zafar and Maya Ali. Not to mention that most of these celebrities have already worked across the border, and if not worked they have been offered some pretty big roles in decent movies, which they proudly rejected.
Other than advertisements, these superstars are also being offered huge projects that is definitely a sign of talent overload in the country.
Hamza Ali Abbasi is known for his critical stances on just about everything. Be it politics or entertainment industry, he has always some insights to offer. We should rather say that sometimes they are quite valuable.
In his recent stint, just after the release of Na Maloom Afrad 2’s item song, Hamza took to Facebook and Twitter his opinion on item songs once again. Here is what he had to say:
Hamza’s tweet received a mixed response as usual, which was expected. While some praised the words and appreciated him to highlight the topic, others suggested that it was India’s influence or totally negated the bad influence of item numbers. However, there are a lot of people who reminded that he was part of one such obscene movie once (Jawaani Phir Nahi Aani). We think that Hamza already repent a lot for that!
But, in the midst of it came Osman Khalid Butt with his subtle dig and lowkey mocking of Abbasi.
I have opinions. Despite the constant item numbers press covfefe

Ghairat promises to be a drama which will highlight the issue of honor killings. When I watched the promos I found Iqra Aziz’s character appealing and it seemed like this drama might have a different take on the issue. The first episode was decent enough because it introduced all the main characters in the story clearly and also highlighted the kind of relationship all of them have with one another.
Jibran Syed’s character Usman is that of a controlling, abusive, narcissistic brother of two sisters Iqra (Sundus Tariq) and Saba (Iqra Aziz) who are not willing to take dictation from him. They have another brother too (played by Faizan Shaikh), who seems to endorse Usman’s behavior. Samina Ahmed plays the role of a docile mother who tries hard to keep peace in the house by making his daughters compromise. Her conversation with her sister also showed that her concept of a “perfect life” could be the reason why her sons in particular were brought up like that. Through other conversations as well the viewers found out why the brothers were raised with such a mindset. It was however odd that daughters who were brought up in such a set up were not subservient especially because both of them believed in doing whatever they could to take charge of things. If Saba alone was like that it would have made more sense.
Although Iqra and Saba’s circumstances do not allow them to live their life the way they would want to but even then they are not completely resigned to their fate. The opening scene showed Saba mustering up the courage to speak her mind even though she knew it could lead to infuriating her brother even more. The hitting part however wasn’t needed and I also felt that the aftermath wasn’t covered properly but it did go to show how far Usman could go if his sisters did not act according to his wishes. Because of her circumstances Iqra has a mental disorder which her mother and brothers fail to understand. They think she is possessed until Shagufta tells her husband that Iqra might be faking her condition. Saman Ansari plays the role of Shagufta, Usman’s wife, who will probably play a major role in instigating Usman to be even more cruel towards his sisters. The fact that Usman instantly believed her went to show that she exercised great influence on him. Iqra is numb and does not even share her feelings until Saba gives her hope. Saba on the other hand probably sees hope in Zohaib (Muneeb Butt) because he can give her a life which would be very different from the one she is living right now. Usman does not even like Zohaib or his family much probably because they are too open-minded for his taste.
Jibran Syed did complete justice to his role but his character. Iqra Aziz and Muneeb Butt have great on screen chemistry and their scenes together were shot well too. All the other actors performed superbly in tonight’s episode and it was directed well too. Although I did not feel an instant connection to the characters but I am definitely interested in finding out what happens next. Like I said I found it difficult to relate to Saba and Iqra’s rebellious nature since both of them were completely different from their brothers. Would such brothers allow their sisters to go to college even? Saba and Iqra looked like well groomed girls therefore I am wondering where they got this exposure from since their father was probably like their brother too.
The preview of the next episode was intriguing. I have a feeling that the first few episodes at least will be fast paced.

Humaima Malick’s first look in Arth was just revealed. Soon after, a short teaser trailer of her appearance in the film rolled out on social media. However, whatever the producers and cast was expecting from it might be turned into shambles. We can feel the bone deep disappointment emanating out from fans and followers after this teaser has appeared:
Adding to the obvious stupidity shown in the teaser, people have been questioning various aspects that can be seen in Malick’s trailer. Though the streets of London and cinematography is breathtaking, there are points that need to be ponder upon.
Who steps out in the street midday with headlights on? Other than this, Humaima’s walk seems so superficial and too much model practiced that we can’t think of her as an experienced actress. She looks like a wannabe who has been offered a role in film for the very first time. Sorry, Humaima but that is what your confusing walk depicts. Moreover, walking straight in the middle of the lights coming out from Rolls Royce. Man! Who is gonna see this lady in front of a road beast?
Well, the teaser might have failed to impress the fans but we know there is a lot that this film has to offer. Maybe next time, the producers and directors will have something better to show. Maybe!
Meera is making the headlines yet again. This time it isn’t because of her comments on any of her fellow actors or her marriage, but because of politics.

In the interview the actress confidently said that she is more famous than Imran Khan hence she will win without a shred of doubt.

Meera further said that she has started planning for her election campaign and will surprise the opponents.

It doesn’t only stop there, according to this phone call, Miss Farooqi also tortured the girl and the woman on the other end claimed that there are bruises on the poor girl’s body from the beating. Gharida also threatened the woman to keep her mouth shut otherwise she’ll face dire consequences.

Ohkay so, this episode was a hit & a miss for me. It started off really well & even ended on an interesting note too but I lost my interest in the middle somewhere. I really don’t want to say this but I never imagined that the team of Yeh Raha Dil would test the patience of the viewers. Some of the scenes are so long that you can easily see how they are relying on those conversations/situations to fill up the episode. I really think it’s about time for all the loose ends to be tied together to give this drama a decent ending. I keep on seeing some comments where people say it’s the 2nd last episode or it ends in a couple of weeks but sadly, I don’t see that happening & for that reason I am kind of disappointed. Enough with the dragging pleaseee!!!
I loved the first scene of the episode, not because of anyone else, but because of the DJ. His rendition of HUM’s OSTs was amazing, starting from Sang e Marmar to Mann Mayal to Yeh Raha Dil, he was epic. I loved how even when everyone was talking, he was busy with his dance moves to keep the party going. I wish he had come up with his version of Birthday Song too but chalo nevermind, at least he was a part of the celebration & I am glad that he & his team must’ve gotten the food & the cake, since he was quite keen on being fed on the day of Zaki & Nida’s engagement too.
Just when I was kind of enjoying the comical spin on how everyone was putting a pressure on Hayat & how she was feeling overburdened by it, I started feeling equally bad for Hassan because he of all the people doesn’t deserve this. Yes, he is a bit off & is quite slow to even realize that he is being played upon, but then again, he is not at fault & Zaki & even Sidra should be ashamed of themselves for giving Hassan all the wrong hopes. Also, even though I feel bad for Hassan & just when I thought I could tolerate his character in last episode, I found him intolerable in this one, like seriously, Hayat was clearly insulting him & he was seeing it as her expression of love, I know some people might derive some comedy out of it but that’s where it just stopped for me.
Finally Hayat confronted Zaki & just exactly what I assumed, Hayat promised to turn herself into a sacrificial lamb by getting married to Hassan so that she gets out of Nida & Zaki’s way so that Zaki has no option left than to get married to Hayat’s baby sister Nida. Seriously, please don’t ruin your character for us Hayat. I actually thought that Hayat like she claimed would seriously go ahead & tell everyone that she is not interested in Hassan but not sure why Zaki’s words affected her to such an extent that she decided that getting married would be the right thing to do? Like who says Hayat has to give the actual reason that since she loves Zaki, she doesn’t want to get married to Hassan whereas all she can say is that she doesn’t see a compatibility between herself & Hassan or that their mental wavelength doesn’t match? I really am not liking how Hayat gave in to this emotional blackmailing & got scared that before the truth gets out that she loves Zaki, she should get married to Hassan to hide everything!?!?!
Oh well, Hayat’s now trapping Fatima’s boyfriend because she wants to fix her parent’s relationship. It was interesting that Affaq apologized for his behavior & told Fatima clearly that he doesn’t want her to leave. This was the best development that I saw in this episode. I think these baby steps will definitely melt Fatima’s heart & also the fact that Hayat is on Fatima’s boyfriend’s case, he will surely back out. The conversation between Hayat & Nida was interesting. It was definitely good to see Haroon & Azra back in the picture again, Haroon definitely knows all of Zaki’s weaknesses that is why he was being pushy that Zaki should get married to Nida straight away, without any delays. So, looks like Tabrez made an appearance again, I really hope his character is brought back to wrap things up & not to drag the story further. I think this is another thing that will change Nida’s perspective of Hayat when she will see Hayat standing up for her & fighting with Tabrez to save Nida’s integrity. I think Nida is going to get a lot of chances to see Hayat’s niceness & she will also get a lot of chances to back out in order to allow Zaki & Hayat to be together. Well, a lot of chances but let’s see when everything will be materialized because it’s about time guys!
Overall, this episode was alright, like I have mixed feelings about it. All the actors are doing a great job but to be honest, I am getting annoyed by Zaki’s character, yes, he has his reasons as he wants to teach Hayat a lesson but then literally fooling someone into believing something is really shallow. Hayat didn’t ‘use’ Nida in the first place, she only secured Nida’s place in Zaki’s life & made sure to give her what was hers, so Zaki really can’t put both the things on the same pedestal. Also, I will dislike Hayat’s character if she will agree to get married to Hassan. Yes, right now Hayat has said it in the spur of the moment & is not thinking much about it because she has Affaq & Fatima’s relationship on her mind, but I really hope she keeps on avoiding this topic & doesn’t go ahead with it because I would hate to see her turning into a sacrificial lamb. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Yeh Raha Dil & yes, special thanks to Ehtashamuddin for another amazing performance. I hope when the couples get married by the end of the drama, he is the one who gets to perform on their wedding functions too, like I seriously want to see him again. :D

In today’s day and age when appearance plays a vital role in every sphere of life, it is natural for everyone to want to look good. No one can deny that a slim and smart body is an attractive body. As wrong as it is judging a book by its cover, we can’t help but do it. A lot of us face the problem of obesity and want nothing more than lose the pounds that make us overweight. We all want the simplest, easiest yet effective ways to do it. In fact, we wouldn’t say no to a maigcal wand that possessed qualities to make us thin! However, the fact of the matter is that losing weight requires effort. We aren’t the only ones who suffer from this problem though; celebrities also gain and lose weight. Saadia Imam lost 15 kgs of weight and she shared with us the ingredients to her magic potion! Watch the video and learn:

Hamza Ali Abbasi has given his open opinions about many controversial topics in the past. He is always blunt and straightforward in expressing his likes and dislikes and it has cost him some meaty roles as well as some media friends. However, this does not deter the handsome man from being about vocal about all things he feels need to be brought to public notice.
In the wake of many item songs recently released by Pakistani movies, similar to their Indian counterparts who almost always have an item song in their films, Hamza has expressed his disdain for them in a Facebook post. Have a look at what he has to say ;
His post has received close to 31000 likes and around three hundred dislikes. The comments are also mostly appreciative of his guts to call a spade a spade, even though he is in the industry himself. Some people, however, found it offensive and reacted in negative to his post. Most derogatory comments meant to remind him of Jawani Phir Nahi Ani and that this is hypocrisy on his part to denounce item songs now. Some called it disloyalty to the industry that feeds him. Most people however agreed with him and his take that we should consider our religious and moral values before objectifying women by making them dance seductively on item numbers while an on screen and off screen crowd ogle these skimpily dressed dancers. This is neither our culture, nor does it sync with the modern trend of women empowerment.

Sonya Hussyn had a star-studded birthday bash on Saturday night. It was a belated birthday party and was attended by many stars from the industry. Sonya looked pretty as always and stars like Sajal Aly, Sami Khan and Zhalay attended her party. See pictures below:
“Tumhara jane ka kya hai tum tu chali jati ho lekin mei tumhei chorne ki rehearsal kr raha hu, is liye na bhi chaho tu chor ke aau ga.” Loved this episode and the credit for that goes mainly to the director for giving this drama the right kind of treatment and then to Sami Khan, who is beyond brilliant as Faris. I have said this before but I feel the need to say this after every episode of this drama; Sami Khan’s portrayal is so perfect and effortless that I find myself looking forward to his scenes. The character is well written as well but if an actor does not capture the essence of a character and fails to translate it on screen properly then no matter how good the character is on paper, it does not come alive on screen. Ayeza Khan’s performance in tonight’s episode was phenomenal too. Sami Khan and Ayeza Khan’s scene together was powerful and right on point. Mansha Pasha’s subtle portrayal of a sensible girl who is in love but isn’t desperate to win over the love of her life is flawless. The variety of characters in this drama also make it more engaging. Every character is a mystery; you don’t really know what to expect from them and how they will react to a certain situation but at the same time the characters are easy to connect to.
Tonight, when Saif told his sob story to Maya, it wasn’t easy to figure out whether he was telling the truth or making up a story because he wanted to make sure that Maya gets divorce from Faris. Zahid Ahmed’s expressions were misleading and there were times when it seemed like he wasn’t telling the truth. I have to say though that Zahid Ahmed and Ayeza Khan do not share the kind of on screen chemistry which was needed to make these scenes a complete success. Zahid Ahmed’s acting in tonight’s episode wasn’t really natural, once again it seemed like he was trying too hard.
Faris and Maya’s meeting on the other hand was an absolute treat to watch; beautiful dialogues and faultless performances! This scene between these two characters couldn’t have been directed and acted out with more precision. The scene covering Zoya and Tipu clearly suggested that Tipu was in love with Zoya and Zoya was wise beyond her years.
After watching this episode, there are tons of questions in my mind. Is Faris really going to announce his engagement with Dariya at the party? Would a girl like Dariya allow him to do that? Is Saif lying or is he really in love with Maya? I feel like he is using her. Will Maya even come to the party? Most importantly, will Maya and Faris’ marriage finally culminate in divorce? I am waiting to find out how the story progresses in the upcoming episodes.
When I started watching this drama I was not looking forward to watching another slow paced play full of philosophies but here I am enjoy this drama even more with every passing episode. The director and some of the actors definitely deserve credit for that. It is great to see Ayeza Khan finally playing a role which has tons of room for performance and is intriguing as well. It is also a pleasure watching Sami Khan excel in the role assigned to him. He has always been a powerful actor but he fits so perfectly in this particular role.
How many of you watched this latest episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.
Meera has mastered the art of making news every time she is given a forum to speak on. Her views on acting, showbiz, Pakistani Film Industry, media and life in general are always all over the tabloids, since she is very vocal about everything.
Recently, she has spoken to Express News and talked quite in detail about her career. We have some excerpts for you here;
Talking about the film industry, Meera said that there is a conspirator lobby that does not want our movies to flourish. That is why movies are being made and actors and actresses are working in them but we don’t have any super star yet.
Meera also remembered her journey that when she had entered showbiz, nobody could dream that an ordinary girl like me would reach such heights of success and fame. She said “I am so successful now that people are associating themselves with my name”. She added that she does not mind when peopl e try to associate with her to achieve popularity but she wants to remind that she has only achieved so much through sheer hard work. So, they should concentrate on working harder, rather than taking Meera’s name for finding a short cut to fame.
Meera further explained that she has performed well in many different roles in Lollywood and hence she was offered to perform in Bollywood movie. There are actresses who have invested their own money to bag roles in Bollywood, but when you compare the work, you can easily spot who is talented and who is not.
She said she is well aware of the fact that people use her name to achieve cheap popularity. Some make her parodies, some spread untrue rumours about her and some even claim to be married or engaged to her, but she is so used to all these rumours by now that she merely laughs them away.
Meera is very thankful to Almighty that He has given her such talent that she becomes the centre of attention wherever she goes.
This is why her fellow actresses become jealous of her.
”Behtar hota hai kay kuch haqeeqaton par parda para rahay.”
I am really enjoying the storytelling here. We get more questions than answers and everyone has got something to hide – even Maria, our main character, knows more than she lets on. And what helps the storytelling is the direction. Faiz is an intelligent director who is deftly treating this multi-track story.
Today, the track that had my complete attention was Maria’s. Imran and Maria were not a happy couple, and it’s not her husband but her son, Fawad for whom Maria’s heart aches. Imran’s former colleague (Sania Saeed) tells Uzair that there was a change in Imran’s behavior during the days leading up to his disappearance; he became short-tempered and quit his job for no apparent reason. In last week’s episode, we saw one of Maria’s flashbacks, where she was telling Imran about this girl she sees in her vision – a girl, dressed in a school uniform, cries for help. And upon hearing this, Imran seemed quite taken aback. Today, we learn more about this little girl, Neeni, and her mother, Arjumand (Angeline Malik). Imran knew Arjumand and used to pay frequent visits to her in Lahore, and he had something to do with Neeni’s death. The episode ended with Arjumand showing up on Maria’s doorstep, and I did NOT see that coming. I am curious about the connection between Imran and Arjumand – an obvious one is that the two were having an affair. I will be slightly disappointed if that really is the case here because that would be a tad bit predictable in an otherwise unpredictable story.
Another thing I didn’t see coming was Maria asking Uzair to discontinue the investigation. Maria fears that if the truth comes out, she’d lose her son for good. Maria is not being completely honest with Uzair, but something tells me that Uzair is keen to get to the bottom of it and won’t be dropping the case.
The other track involving Sania Saeed’s character (I don’t think we learned her name?) could have been better. When you have someone like Sania Saeed working her magic, this track could have been much stronger. Anyways, here we follow a woman who, after her husband’s death, is struggling to get through to her daughter, Hania. Hania was extremely close to her father and is certain of his presence in their house. Hania used to spend the majority of her time with her stay-at-home dad because her mother worked to support the family. After his death, Hania misses him and thinks that her mother doesn’t try to understand her feelings. I don’t appreciate the way working mothers are portrayed in a negative light, but I am glad that they didn’t project her as a mother who couldn’t care less, and it was good that I found myself sympathizing with a mother who deeply cared about and loved her daughter and struggled to bridge the rift. Maria’s ‘’involvement’’ here seemed forced and that ‘’let your daughter move on’’ speech was rather disappointing – I couldn’t help thinking, ‘’is that all?’’Also, I wish they’d chosen some other actor to play Hania’s father. I know the guy had only one scene but still! And sitting behind his daughter in the restaurant – I don’t know but the whole scene felt a bit off to me?
I am really interested to learn more about Arjumand, Neeni and Imran. Did you guys watch this episode? I would like to know your thoughts.

After being busy in singing and making music videos, Goher Mumtaz is all set for his new prohmjectr Faisla with Ary Digital. His previous drama Ghayal left the audience with a negative impression of the handsome and multitalented artist, but that is not going to be the case now.
He has posed this shot of his from the sets of Faisla ;
The new project he had undertaken is about a very nice guy from a middle class family, who falls in love with his mother’s brother’s daughter, played by Sonia Mishaal. This time he is the good guy against the evil forces that are there.
The play will air on Ary Digital in August and Goher will be singing the OST for it as well. He thinks it is a good way to both kinds of his fans, those who like him as a singer and those who would like more of his acting on screen.
Sonia will be named Maryam in the play and Ali Abbas is also part of the cast.
Ever since the trailer of the upcoming Pakistani movie ‘Chen Aye Na’ has released, the film has not received any positive comments. The music has also failed to create an impression over the audience but the lead actress of the movie Sahrish Khan, is still determined for her debut release. She has expressed her views on all the condemnations over ‘Chen Aye Na’ in an interview. She said:
”Critism doesn’t bother me. When I signed up for the movie, I knew what I was signing up for, so no matter what comes my way, or what reviews the film receives, Chein Aye Na will always be special to me. We’ve worked hard for the movie and it will show once the movie is released. Also regarding my career in the film industry, I’m already doing Rehbra, my second film. Although I signed Rehbra first and technically it would have been my screen debut, I’m certain my work will speak for itself and my future once the audience have a chance to see it.”
Despite of all the criticism pouring her way for her debut movie, she stands strong and looks optimistic for the release.
She has also revealed her reasons of singing ‘Chen Aye Na’ and have also disclosed about her character. She said:
”I’m a hopeless romantic and because the story for Chein Aye Na played right on the importance of love and relationships, I signed up for it. I play the character of Ruba, a girl whose confident yet shy, assertive yet timid, and I connected well with it, so yes, I took it up because I felt I could deliver what was needed of me for my part.”
Since Sahrish is from the lineage of Sabiha Khanam and Santosh Kumar, both are the big names from our film industry, we hope she proves her roots and starlet.
This year the 5th HUM awards were held in Lahore and this particular aspect was highlighted on the red carpet as well. All the celebrities shared how they felt about being in Lahore for the awards on the red carpet. Like all the previous years, the award show was grand and lively but there were also some features of the show which continue to disappoint year after year, especially those of us who look forward to a more “Pakistani” (more original) touch to these awards. Overall however, the entire show was a true reflection of the spirit behind this award show.
I think it is only fair to discuss different aspects of the show individually, in order to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the show. I am going to discuss the function and will not be talking about the nominations and whether the winners deserved the awards or not.
The Hosts
If I had to sum up the way the HUM Awards were hosted by most of the hosts in two words then those words would be energetic and loud. Mikaal Zulfiqar and Hareem Farooque were the first ones to host the ceremony, while Hareem Farooque was relatively spontaneous and at times not very impressive, Mikaal Zulfiqar was energetic but at the same time a little too loud. He was shouting at the top of his voice and not really talking to the audience. Overall however, Mikaal looked great and his energy added more life to the show.
Nadia Khan’s hosting in the the HUM Awards was toned down but she was too busy reading from her notes and there was very little eye contact with the audience. The political jokes didn’t really fit in either.
Unlike last year’s HUM awards, Sanam Jung’s hosting was right on point this time around. She looked pretty and was very comfortable on stage. Although this was the first time that Ali Rehman hosted such an event but he did really well, he was more natural and confident than many other celebrities who hosted for the first time in the previous two years. Also, it was good to see some new faces on the stage this time.
The Stage And The Script
HUM’s award show’s stage is always vibrant and grand, the best thing about it is the way everything that happens in the background is handled, from the screens showing pictures, images and even text which goes so well with whatever is happening on the stage to changing the entire background completely, it is always a job well done. The person in charge of the stage definitely did their job faultlessly this time around too without missing out on minute details which add to the beauty of watching the award show because the stage is the center of attention throughout. I truly appreciate the hard work put into making this entire experience not only visually pleasing but also a work of art.
The script in general was alright, there wasn’t a lot of novelty in the jokes or the skits. Like most of the award shows, the jokes revolved around TRPs and of course Humayun Saeed! I felt like Humayun Saeed himself is bored with these jokes! Yasir Hussain’s Pathan act seemed repetitive especially after watching Shadi Mubarak Ho. Some of his jokes however were hilarious and the best part of his act was that for a change he focused on also those actors who were not sitting in the front row. His joke with Saife Hassan was especially funny and original too because usually such jokes are directed towards the actors and singers.
One thing HUM excels at is paying tribute to legends in their award shows. They do not only give an award but they do so in a way which shows that they mean it! Farida Khanum deserved all the love and respect she received from the crowd, hosts and the director. Reema Khan was the perfect choice for presenting the award because only someone with good command on Urdu language could have done justice to paying tribute to such a legend.
There were plenty of “bright karein” jokes during the ceremony and it was really funny watching Ayesha Sana “own” these jokes. It takes a lot of courage to turn something like this into an advantage but Ayesha Sana has done just that!
The Crowd And The Camera Work
The crowd was one of the best aspects of this show because the way everyone cheered for the winners, laughed at the jokes, got emotional when there were tributes and most importantly enjoyed the show as a whole made each one of these people look like a big team instead of competitors. The reactions of the crowd were captured really well too by the camera men and edited perfectly too. Also, the focus wasn’t just on few celebrities in the crowd.
The Performances
Personally, performances which are hugely inspired by Bollywood aren’t my favorite part of an award show which should be reflective of our own entertainment industry but at least this year the songs were from our own films. The opening performance was similar to the ones we have seen in the previous years too, the costumes and the dance both had nothing new to offer.
The most shocking part however was Shahroz Sabzwari and Sarish Khan’s performance because I wasn’t expecting HUM to endorse their upcoming film. Apart from this, the outfits, performances and especially the song Sarish danced on was substandard.
Mehwish Hayat’s performance was shown in the promos several times therefore I expected more from it. There wasn’t enough energy in her performance and you would expect HUM to work harder on the dresses which all of these celebrities wore during performances.
Kubra Khan and Ahsan Khan’s dresses and performances were better than the rest but Reema Khan’s dance performance however was the best since it was a true depiction of her talent, it was graceful and she was the only one who wore a classy outfit while performing.
Watching Sajjad Ali perform on stage was like a dream come true and that dream became a beautiful reality because of the fact that this entire performance was so well rehearsed and well put together. Even now Sajjad Ali has the same presence and is still at the top of his game even though he isn’t seen performing on television or shows any more. The youngsters Momina Mustehsan, Asim Azhar and Ali Sethi sang really well too. Ali Sethi and Asim Azhar however were more lively and confident on stage, Momina Mustehsan’s dress got in her way a lot of time, she appeared to be uncomfortable and distracted.
The tribute to Junaid Jamshed was sweet because all those people who were really close to Junaid Jamshed were a part of it but at the same time I was disappointed because I was expecting all the songs to be the ones which were sung by Junaid Jamshed.
Overall, this year the HUM awards were really well put together and had some unforgettable performances to its credit but just like every year there was a lot of emphasis on English language because of which even some of the celebrities who did not feel comfortable speaking English felt they “had” to give their thank you speeches in English. I especially liked the way Sania Saeed accepted her award and her thank you speech. Also, the manner in which Zebu of Udaari was appreciated by Ahsan Khan and the confidence with which she shared how she felt about her experience was endearing.
How many of you watched the show? Do share your thoughts about it.
