Mera Yaar Miladay – Episode 5

Hmm. So this episode saw entry of Aslam Bhai into the mohalla, entry of Fahd into Master Sb’s house and entry of Master Sb into the hospital. Now with so many entriyan, dil mein bajni thi ghantiyan except the dil here was poor Master Sb’s! Forgive my cheesiness, but I just could not resist!

Anyhow, Master Sb has resigned himself to moving out of the mohalla. He is paid a visit by Aslam Bhai (Saleem Mairaj) with Thor’s desi bhai in tow. I was so distracted by him nodding his head up and down and flicking his hair in the back that I almost missed what Aslam Bhai says to Master Sb! I am glad Master Sb brushes off his offer of ‘help’ because I did not want to sit through episodes of Aslam-Dabbu faceoffs, which will happen anyway but not because Master Sb has asked Aslam Bhai to intervene on his behalf.

Seriously, whether Master Sb was asked to leave the mohalla or not he should just leave it now considering the amount of taanas he gets at every galli kay nukkar. Literally! Fahd comes to Master Sb’s rescue when a couple of young men are rude to him and begin pushing him around. Touched and impressed by Fahd’s selflessness, Master Sb invites him into his home and Dado and Zeba are also introduced to him. Turns out this was all a plan set out by Dabbu Bhai as the men taunting Master Sb were sent there by Dabbu Bhai and he made sure Fahd was there to ‘rescue’ Master Sb. Well, Master Sb fell for it and Fahd emerges as his savior. Mushq is unaware that Master Sb brought Fahd inside their home because she was still locked up in her room.

I had thought, after watching last week’s preview that Master Sb suffers a heart attack and meets his end. He does have an angina attack but does not die. I found it really odd how Fahd was supposedly just right outside their door and burst in when Master Sb had the attack and needed to be rushed to the hospital. There was a bit too much of Zeba today for my liking – her conversations with Master Sb, with Dado and Master Sb and with Mushq. I find Zeba’s character quite annoying and would rather not see too much of her!

I really do not understand Dabbu Bhai and Mehru’s romance and I do not think I really want to even try to understand it. In the previous episode she was crying and saying she can not bear him to be with anyone else and has no control over her heart etc. Today, she was flitting around the mohalla with him but Dabbu makes it sound like he has not declared his love to her and is unsure she feels the same. What?!

Mushq seems to be quite lost in thought in a few scenes. She does say to Zeba earlier that had Zeba not intervened, Mushq would have made her escape. But later in the episode, even before the heart attack we see Mushq feeling remorse at the distress she has caused her father. I have to say, even I thought Firdous Jamal looked very vulnerable in that scene where he is asleep when Sajal Ali sits near his feet. Mushq knows now that her family knows Fahd and we see her trying to make amends with Zeba and says things will be back to how they were before. Is she thinking that now that Master Sb is becoming fond of Fahd then that will improve her chances of getting married to him?

Next week’s preview did not seem very exciting and just seemed to be more of Mushq imploring Fahd to whisk her away and Aslam-Dabbu trouble. I know that there were ‘happening’ moments in this episode with Fahd making an impression on Master Sb and Master Sb’s angina attack etc but I found myself wanting to hit the forward button quite a few times today. Overall, I found today’s episode just okay. I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the earlier ones – and no it is not because I am missing the wretched Qureshi!

How many of you watched today’s episode? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Mann Mayal – Episode 7

The days of madness and recklessness are clearly over both for Mannu and Salahuddin. This play started off as a very filmy love story but it has turned into a tragedy since the last episode. The introduction of new characters and the sudden disappearance of Mannu’s family has given the drama a completely different feel. I must say that all through the last episode and this episode as well I had to keep on reminding myself that I was watching the same drama which we watched a week or two back! Tonight’s episode was brilliantly directed just like all the other episodes and I must say that Maya Ali and Hamza Ali Abbasi’s acting was top notch in tonight’s episode. I am not entirely sure how the story will unfold in the upcoming episodes since the whole scenario has changed so much in only two episodes but I must give due credit to Haseeb Hassan for giving attention to detail. Watching Talat Hussain on screen after a very long time was an absolute pleasure and I am most certainly looking forward to seeing more of him.

mm

Tonight’s episode opened with Mannu reaching out to Salahuddin. Salahuddin made it clear that he did not want Mannu relying on him in any way. It was only after this that Mannu decided that she needed to change herself in order to make herself more ‘acceptable’ for her husband. Although Mannu changed her outlook according to her husband’s wishes but it took much more effort to change her ways altogether. I loved the scene in which Mannu packs all her old clothes (memories) in the suitcase and decides to move on. Mikael’s mother married Mikael off to Mannu hoping that she will be able to change him therefore the change in Mannu’s personality was not welcomed by her but Mannu knows that Mikael is used to having things his way therefore she is only focusing her energies on pleasing her husband. It is extremely difficult for any girl like Mannu to change herself entirely hence It would have been better if she took a little more time to take this decision. The changes in Mannu in these two episodes and everything else does feel very rushed. Although I can see that Mannu had some very solid reasons to take these steps but even then there was no reason to show this change in her personality this soon. Mannu’s family is completely out of the picture, it would have been nice if the viewers got to see Mannu talking to someone from her family or we were shown a few minutes of what was going on in Mannu’s house. The fact that all these characters have completely disappeared also adds to the brand new feel of this drama.

Salahuddin continued to struggle in Ifty’s house and he is planning to leave the house for obvious reasons. Hamza Ali Abbasi was very convincing as the thorough gentleman who can’t see anyone mistreating an old helpless man. Ifty’s father’s connection with Salahuddin was very heart warming and at this point although Salahuddin will have very little reason to stay in the house but I would definitely like to see these two characters developing a stronger bond. Kuki and Jamil’s arrogance was once again covered in a very realistic manner but I couldn’t help but wonder where this track was leading. Hopefully everything that we are watching in these episodes will have some relevance to the way things unfold in the future. Watching Salahuddin think about how things were when he was home with people who loved him was very touching. Salahuddin also found it very difficult to accept the changes in Mannu and kept on thinking about how different she looked but he never tried to get in touch with her.

mm1

In my opinion this episode belonged to Maya Ali, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Haseeb Hassan, the director. The script is confusing so far; too many changes in a short period of time which are making it hard for me to relate to some of the new developments. Maya Ali made me feel for her character, she definitely portrayed every aspect of Mannu’s new personality in a very convincing way. I couldn’t help but wonder though what kind of a future do Mikael and Mannu have together? Mikael is a selfish man who will stay married to Mannu only as long as she does everything according to his wishes. For how long can such a marriage work? Divorce is not an option for Mannu because she made it clear that she comes from a house where marriages are meant to last. The viewers were never told why someone like Mikael got married at all and why did he like Mannu in the first place? In a conversation with his mother he said to her that he liked Mannu but she did not like him but once they got married, he wasn’t even interested in her and had a problem with the way she dressed up and the way she talked. This marriage seems very forced but then if that is the case then why were the viewers given a wrong impression? The viewers were clearly led to believe that Mikael was getting married to Mannu because he liked her. Such scenes which showed Mikael’s fascination or likeness for Mannu in the past episodes should have been avoided since they created confusion regarding Mikael’s character. Gohar Rasheed has made me hate his character which would mean that he has succeeded in doing his job. His character however has nothing interesting to offer so far.

Overall, a lot about this drama has changed in these two episodes and right now it is very difficult to tell where the story will go from here. I am definitely very impressed by the kind of performances we saw in tonight’s episode. The preview of the next episode showed Ifty pressurizing Salahuddin to stay in the house while his wife tried to throw him out of the house! It also suggested that Mikael’s feelings towards Mannu will not change much even after all the changes in her personality and outlook.

Tere Mere Beech – Episode 15!

Ohkay so, this episode of Tere Mere Beech was quite tragic & by speaking about tragedy, I am no where referring to Nighat’s death. It was filled with the tragedy that unnecessarily Hareem had to face & sadly no one is willing to understand her point of view at all.

Everyone pretty much found out everything about Fahad, starting from how he never owned anything to the fact that the jewelry he gifted to Hareem on their wedding wasn’t bought with his money too. The conversation between Tariq Zaman & Ali was done nicely. Tariq told Ali that he tried to help Fahad but he has done enough & now won’t budge because the way he has left by taking jewelry with him means that Tariq will have to face a great loss & he has understood that Fahad isn’t that special friend for whom he would pay such a huge amount.

The police got involved in this case, which resulted in Nighat’s departure from the world. Honestly speaking, when the preview last week suggested that Nighat’s role will end, I was kind of relieved but my relief was short-lived because looks like Nighat not only left with a bang, but she is going to keep on making appearances in front of Hareem to haunt & torture her enough because looks like she didn’t have her fair share when she was alive. I was actually happy that now no one will pester Hareem like Nighat used to but oh well, Nighat made sure to leave the world at such a note where everyone considered her to be the victim & Hareem a villain whereas it is a completely opposite scenario.

Before dying, Nighat uttered spiteful words against Hareem saying that she is someone who can only cause harm & pain to you & after she died, all I wondered about was the time when Nighat said something nice about Hareem in front of Nadia & Sadia? Yes, if you recall, that hasn’t happened starting from the very first episode till this one, which I feel also showcases what a bad mother Nighat was to Hareem. If Nighat had tried to explain Hareem’s nature to Nadia & Sadia, may be after her death they wouldn’t have treated Hareem so rudely & they wouldn’t have held her responsible for their mother’s death. Nighat never really tried to bring her daughters closer & always badmouthed about Hareem in front of Nadia & Sadia, so I am not surprised why they didn’t feel anything for Hareem & kept on blaming her for each & everything.

I have said it before too & I will say it again that the writer has tried to turn Nighat into a victim & Hareem into a villain but that doesn’t really sit well with me because Hareem was always wronged & she never got the love she yearned for, from her mother. I so wish before leaving the world Nighat had blamed herself for falling short of her responsibilities as a mother & she had blamed herself for Hareem’s behavior & attitude in general because it was her decision that ruined Hareem’s personality & pretty much her life, but looks like Nighat was too busy in sympathizing with herself that she forgot to tell the truth to Nadia & Sadia.

Just when I thought may be we’ll be getting less of Nadia, she showed up even more with a display of lip augmentation gone wrong. Nadia blamed Hareem for what she was facing now in regards to Fahad because she tried to tell how wise she was by implying that she could see through Fahad’s intentions that he wasn’t sincere to Hareem, so when Hareem didn’t really listen to anyone, she is responsible for how Fahad has deceived her. Honestly speaking, this made me dislike Nadia a lot more than I actually did because if she was sooo wise to know that Fahad wasn’t a nice guy, then why didn’t she act like a savior & force Asad to win Hareem over? If Nadia was so wise, why didn’t she convince Hareem to give Asad a chance too, in order to save her life? Honestly speaking, before blaming Hareem Nadia should blame herself for playing a part in ruining Hareem’s life too because if she wasn’t such an insecure person, she would have wanted what’s best for Hareem & wouldn’t have forced Nighat to get rid of Hareem. Nadia isn’t as clean slated as she thinks she is & what’s with the OTT acting? I am finding it hard to tolerate her.

Well, I was thoroughly disappointed seeing how everyone treated Hareem as an outcast & a culprit. Why don’t Nadia & Sadia ever ask Hareem about what she went through emotionally when their mother gave her away? Why don’t her sisters, in stead of blaming her try to understand her perspective? Nighat never ever encouraged Nadia & Sadia to have good terms with Hareem because she was too busy brainwashing them against her. Anyways, I was happy that we won’t be getting more of Nighat but the preview of the next episode disappointed me. I am amazed at the level of self-pity & self-sympathy Nighat has displayed that even after dying she isn’t resting in peace & will continue to come back & haunt Hareem for the mistakes she never committed.

Overall, this episode was strictly ohkay but Sanam Chaudhry’s acting was top-notch too. Also, looking at the curly long strands of Nadia & perfectly straightened hair of Sadia followed by their proper makeup, it was hard to tell that they just lost their mother whereas looking at the messy bun, faded makeup & somewhat visible dark circles of Hareem, anyone could tell that she lost someone she loved & she was emotionally shattered from within. I really think Sanam Chaudhry’s stylist & she herself has done a commendable job in making her character look real & believable. Also, I feel like mentioning that I am a fan of Saba Faisal’s personality & her acting & I really like watching her on-screen but the character of Nighat doesn’t really hit home for me that is why I am being so hard on the character & by no means at the actor. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Tere Mere Beech.

Aabro – Episode 12!

Ohkay so, this episode of Aabro was full of misses but had a few hits, but if I speak about the overall story, I most certainly don’t agree with the writer’s perspective at all & I believe we don’t need such dramas that only focus on holding the girl responsible for everything while turning everyone else into a victim.

So, Ali & Aabro shifted to a room, which looked more like a store room but they both didn’t complain at all. Ali got in contact with Aabro’s mother & she tried to help her daughter the best way possible. I like how Sakina hasn’t estranged Aabro completely. Sakina is a true depiction of what mothers are like because no matter what their children do, they will support them & love them unconditionally. Sakina herself has lived a tough life, that is why she can understand Aabro’s condition better. I like how she always encourages Aabro to stay strong & be patient because Sakina knows there’s no other option left for Aabro & I find that very realistic.

Aabro has pretty much understood it completely that all the things she once looked down upon are the things she’s depending upon in times of need & everything that she didn’t want in her life has become unavoidable for her now but somehow, the way she is managing herself & the way she is accepting it all makes me feel for her. Aabro is satisfied that at least she has a place to stay & more than that, what I like about Aabro is that she is also trying to help Ali & herself too. I am glad she spoke about giving tuition to the school-going kids to which Ali agreed. Honestly speaking, I was happy to see the peace & harmony between Ali & Aabro. Aabro needs that much of love & attention from Ali & I am glad that Ali can now see what his wife is going through all because she loves him. Ali can see how Aabro is being mistreated by his family & just because Aabro has stopped complaining about them, Ali can see it even more clearly how his wife is suffering.

As the episodes are passing by, my detest for Ali’s family is growing more & more. As far as I could see, Aabro only gave a 20 Rupees note to the maid to fetch her some milk for her to which Zubaida responded monstrously saying that Aabro was a spend thrift who was being extravagant in her choice of milk, like seriously!?!?! All the instructions that Zubaida & her meesni beti Samra gave to the maid only showcased how petty & shallow these ladies are. Samra suggested that maid also shouldn’t do Ali & Aabro’s laundry, which made me feel that she was about to leave this home, so it would’ve been better if she had stopped worrying about such petty things already. I am ready to understand everything else, but what I can’t bring myself to comprehend is the reason why Ali’s family doesn’t believe in feeding Aabro properly? They’re a middle class family so I don’t think a bottle of milk deserved such a grand reaction & fuss over it. Do they really want Aabro to die from malnutrition or what because other than that, there’s no justification for this sort of pathetic behavior. They can hate Aabro as much as they want but to defy her of basic human right of having a meal is downright ridiculous & is totally unforgivable.

I most certainly don’t understand what Shahida wants. They way she reacted to the news of Aabro’s pregnancy was pathetic. All this while, she was hoping for Ali & Aabro’s divorce which is disgusting. Does Shahida really think that she can build a happy paradise for her daughter by wishing ill upon someone else’s daughter? Both Zubaida & Shahida continued to blame Aabro but I felt like smacking Zubaida & telling her that Ali is equally responsible too. I don’t understand why the news of Ali & Aabro’s child was so disturbing for Fauzia that it made her face forlorn? Shahida is making a fuss about everything so I don’t think there’s a rocket science involved that if she knew Ali & Aabro will haunt her & her daughter all their lives, why did she choose Ali’s brother Abid for Fauzia? They could’ve easily said no & moved on in their lives? I so am not looking forward to the mother daughter conversations they both will have after Fauzia will get married to Abid. I have a feeling that Fauzia is one of those people who don’t know the art of happiness & have never experienced what it is like to be happy. She has found a good husband (which was probably the HASIL of her life), she has an MIL who can’t stop raving about her, she has a support of everyone around her, to phir shakal pe 12 kyun bajay hain bhai? Kiss baat ka gham laga hua hai is afsurda larki ko? I just can’t tolerate Shahida, Zubaida & Fauzia & I am not thrilled to see what this trio will do in the future. Also, the way the title photo of the drama shows how Fauzia has her eyes glued at Ali, I am sure she is going to dwell in the misery of the fact that Ali rejected her & it won’t allow her to be happy with what Abid is doing for her.

I really like how Abid is trying his best to develop a healthy relation among all his family members. The way he invited Ali & Aabro to his wedding & helped Ali in participating was really sweet. I liked how Aabro reacted to it too where she didn’t make a fuss about Abid looking down upon them but rather appreciated his niceness. Also, the conversation Ali & Aabro had about buying medicines or clothes was really touching, they both are going through a very tough time but they both are sticking together which is good. Honestly speaking the way Ali’s sister didn’t allow Aabro to come forward for the rasm was really amusing. She looked like one of those annoying drivers who drive slowly but don’t let anyone else overtake them. I really hope Zubaida stops being such a typical saas & Ali’s sisters stop being such weirdos too.

Overall, the only thing that I liked in this episode was Ali’s growing concern for Aabro & Abid’s attempt at making them feel a part of the family too but other than that, this entire episode was bothersome. I really hope that Ali’s mother learns to blame her son for wronging her & not always covering his shortcomings using his wife as a scapegoat. It is really funny that at one hand she doesn’t feed Aabro & on the other, she expects Ali to hand over his entire salary to her so that she can spend his money to cover the wedding expenses. The preview suggested that Ali will break down & they both will have a baby girl. I am hoping to see them accepting Aabro & her daughter & put everything behind! I must say, Maheen Fayyaz looked nice in this episode because she was wearing a lot less makeup & I think that should be her go-to look. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Aabro.

Fawad Khan also talked about why he decided to work in the film Kapoor and Sons. Talking about the intimacy issue he said,

“Intimacy is something new for Pakistani audience. People take their families to cinema and it will be difficult for them to explain to their kids what is going on. There are obviously some constraints and censorship laws are very different and that does sort of mould the mind of the audience.”

Kisay Chahoon – An Overview

Haye ji how cute is Ameer, I mean seriously ji! After binge watching a few episodes and pretty much engrossed in the drama, when my husband called my name, I caught myself just in time from replying…hain ji?!!

A Moomal Entertainment production, directed by Ahmed Bhatti and written by Mehwish Hassan, Kisay Chahoon has been on air every Wednesday and Thursday at 9pm on HUM Tv for a few weeks now. I had watched the first few episodes and then writing it off as predictable, somehow forgot about it until a few readers asked if I could watch it and write a review. Feeling very chuffed at my first drama review request (and seeing as I do not cook on a Friday – hence more free time), I caught up online and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed watching the drama.

Kisay Chahoon is the story of two cousins, Mehru (Sonia Hussain) and Hamza (Noor Hasan) whose families are at loggerheads with each other. I am not very clear about the intricate details but at some point Hamza’s father borrowed quite a hefty amount from Mehru’s father Jabbar (Firdous Jamal) and has been unable to return the loan, so Jabbar takes him to court. Mehru’s mother Zakiya (Fauzia Mushtaq) is Hamza’s phuppo. The whole court aspect brings bitterness between the families, more so in Jabbar and Hamza’s mother Shakra (Shaheen Khan). Mehru and Hamza are seemingly unaffected by the animosity between the parents and believe ‘love will conquer all’ even though it is obvious how unlikely it is this marriage can ever happen with the parents’ blessings.

Jabbar’s sisters son Ameer (Ali Abbas) comes to stay with them and is shown to be a simple, well meaning sort of person. Mehrus younger sister Maryam (Pari Hashmi) gets along with him but Mehru is quite short with him from the beginning because she knows he has seen her out with Hamza and worries he may tell her father.

Hamza lands a job as a tutor to a very rich and spoilt girl Mareena (Iqra Aziz) who eventually (quickly!) falls in love with him. Ameer appears to be falling in love with Mehru (I have no idea why as she is always only very rude and short with him) but he knows Mehru loves Hamza and wishes she gets married to Hamza. Trying to help out Mehru when speaking to her father about not going ahead with a proposal that has come for her, he somehow gives his uncle the impression that he is interested in Mehru and vice versa. Jabbar is delighted for he adores Ameer and announces they are to be married.

Meanwhile, Hamza speaks to his parents about Mehru and later his mother storms off to Mehru’s house to give them a piece of her mind. Mehru does admit she loves Hamza but Jabbar issues an ultimatum that either Mehru marries Ameer or else he will divorce Zakiya. Horrified at the thought of her mother getting divorced, Mehru agrees to marry Ameer and the nikkah takes place the same day. Hamza hears about the nikkah and there is the whole scene where he is raging across the city on his motorbike to reach Mehru’s house and once he is there – he stops (at the same time Mehru says qabool hai) and goes back. Only issue I had with that scene was that Mehru was inside the house whereas he was sat outside on his bike so unless he has bionic hearing or there was a hidden mike in Mehru’s room which I doubt – why did he turn back? Maybe because he realised how futile it was. Why race across the city to get to her house then? Ah well, I’ll let that one go with ‘love knows no reason’.

Since Mehru is now married and Hamza’s family still needs the money, he agrees to marry Mareena. Mehru is married but as Ameer says ‘woh sirf jaanay kay leeyay iss ghar mein ayee hain’. She has made it clear she wants a divorce from Ameer so she can marry Hamza. I do not understand how that helps as she only agreed to the marriage in the first place so that her mother does not get divorced so why would her father feel differently now if she divorces from Ameer and then marries Hamza. True, she says she is not in her father’s control anymore but still I guess it only goes to show what I feel from the beginning that Hamza and Mehru are in love but have very half baked plans. There was the time her father was considering a proposal for her and Hamza left her in the lurch to handle it herself . True, he was worried about the financial situation his family was in but he was very hands off about the whole situation which I did not like especially as Mehru was doing all she could to help him out. Then Mehru’s rash decision to marry Ameer and saying she and Hamza will sort out how to proceed now shows Mehru rushes off into situations without really thinking them through.

In the latest episode Mehru learns Hamza is getting married and confronts him and he brushes her off by saying this is her ‘saza’ for having married Ameer. She comes home and takes out all her anger and frustration on poor Ameer. I wish they had shown the scene when Ameer finally returns home and what Mehru’s reaction was.

I guess the main track in the story is meant to be that of Mehru and Hamza but the real show stealer has to be Ameer. Ali Abbas has acted amazingly well. He made me laugh, made me wince when Mehru puts him down, and cover my mouth in shock when she slaps him. His body language, his mannerisms, the way he speaks –Ali Abbas has truly put in a lot of effort in the role and I love how even though he is funny, he is not shown to be comical or OTT. I could not help being reminded though of the indian movie Rab nay bana di jori and thinking the whole black satchel and mannerisms and then sitting across the table from Mehru at meal times seemed to be a bit inspired by the movie but I am not complaining. Ali Abbas has done a commendable job and his acting feels original enough.

I was so thrilled for Ameer when after the nikkah we see he is promoted from the tiny drawing room to a big proper bedroom and I thought nahin yaar when he picks his pillow and walks out. I understand Mehru feels controlled and betrayed and is lumping Ameer with her family thinking they have all been unfair to her but the way she yells at him and slaps him was just awful. We see that she was hoping Ameer would say no to the nikkah knowing she does not want to marry him, even though she had said yes.

Noor Hassan is just Noor Hassan. That should say it all. He is Noor Hassan in every Noor Hassan drama with his strangled deep voice and head tilted at 45 degrees. When we were teenagers there was a time when most of us had our heads tilted at 45 degrees but we grew out of it. Really, we did. About time he does too. Iqra Aziz is convincing as the rich spoilt brat but when she had that huge smile in the hospital it creeped me out and I wonder if her role is just someone who is spoilt and very moody or also borderline mentally unstable?

Sonia Hussain is one of the few young actresses that I like and although she gets a bit scary looking and asthmatic in her emotional crying scenes, she is a good actress and I like how most of the time her acting is very natural and real.

The story does not seem to be new so far. Girl getting married to someone she does not love who turns out to be a total angel – Ishq Parast, Who Ishq tha Shayed to name a couple. Although if I am to quote only those two dramas then I may as well substitute the word angel with Jibran Syed . Oh well. And I will unashamedly admit I am a bit of a sucker for those kind of stories where the female lead slowly falls in love with her husband. I like Kisay Chahoon because it lacks any horrifying/weird twists and turns as yet. And the fact that it airs twice a week helps keep up the pace of the drama I feel. With Hamza’s father dying in the latest episode and Hamza totally at his susraal’s beck and call it seems like Shakra will get a reality check. Poor Shaheen Khan, with her brainless mother role in Chup Raho or the equally brainless khala role in Ishq Parast I was pleasantly (dripping sarcasm here)surprised when she lies to Hamza that she asked for Mehru’s rishta but her father insulted her and threw her out. I thought wah Shaheen, you do have a brain. Seems like it has not helped her much here either though.

Overall, I liked the play more until Mehru and Ameer got married. I do not like how Mehru is treating Ameer because at first his scenes made me laugh but now I feel so bad for him. One could think that he should have just said no to Mehru’s father to the nikkah but then that is just how he is. A non confrontational sort and even though he tried to stop things earlier but when his mamoo says he knows what he is doing and needs his support, he felt he needed to step up. I really like the chemistry between Ali Abbas and Firdous Jamal – one actually believes he is truly fond of his nephew. I suppose Mehru will slowly fall in love with Ameer now and Mareena and Hamza are in for a joy (read:horror) ride. Ahmed Bhatti is a new name to me but he has done wonderfully well with this drama. I found the lighting a bit odd and annoying in Mareena’s house scenes but I am guessing no more accounts tuitions now so no more scenes with that lighting!

I seem to be picking dramas to review that not many others are following. I would love to hear if people are following this drama and enjoying it? And if you would like a weekly review. Please share your thoughts!

Dil Lagi – Episode 1

Written by: Faiza Iftikhar

Directed by: Nadeem Baig

Produced by: Six Sigma Plus

Channel and Timings: ARY Digital – Saturday – 8pm

This episode just like any other 1st episode focused on introducing the viewers with all the primary characters involved in the story. The story revolves around two households which are completely different from one another. Surraya Khatoon (Asma Abbas) is a widow who worked very hard to raise her two daughters after her husband passed away and she was shown struggling even in tonight’s episode. Mohid’s household on the other hand is quite affluent and his mother (Saba Hameed) is very different from Surraya Khatoon. Anmol (Mehwish Hayat) got more screen time than any other character in tonight’s episode. Anmol’s character is definitely very “unusual”! She takes boldness and courage to a whole new level. This episode opened with showing how far Anmol will go to teach someone who wronged her a lesson and all through this episode the viewers saw Anmol doing just that! Whether it was the lawyer or the people who come to take over the house Anmol did not spare anyone including Mohid (Hamayun Saeed). Anmol is not just bold but she is also very practical. She works to earn a living for her family and when her family is faced with a problem, she goes out looking for solutions.

dl

Mohid is the aklota beta we see in dramas all the time. He belongs to a very affluent family, he is maa ka ladla and he had absolutely no plans of tying the knot until he laid his eyes on Anmol! The first time Mohid saw Anmol, she was beating the man who snatched her purse and the second time he saw her she was beating up the men who came to throw their furniture out therefore one can safely assume that Mohid liked Anmol’s bold nature. Mohid’s dialogue “jhoote insan ke baad mujhe sub se ziada nafrat buzdil insan se hei” pretty much summed up why he would fall for someone like Anmol.

Mohid’s mother is another unconventional character in the play. She is someone who does not have a high opinion of men in general and her advices to the women who came to her for guidance clearly showed that she believed in a marriage in which both partners had equal rights. Not much was revealed about Mohid’s sister (Uzma Hassan) but I couldn’t help but wonder why she wasn’t married. She made a phone call which did appear to be “suspicious”.

dl1

To be honest I found Anmol’s character too Over The Top. There was a lot of screaming, running and hitting in this episode – just watching it on screen made me tired!! I found this episode more chaotic than anything else. Hamayun Saeed appeared on television screen after such a long time but he failed to make his presence felt. I always find his make-up extremely distracting and there was nothing special about his character as well. It is obviously too early to judge the characters therefore I am looking forward to finding out more about all these characters. I found Uzma Hassan’s character intriguing and I am hoping that there will be a ‘human’ side to Anmol as well. It is always good to see an unconventional leading lady who is bold but somehow I had a difficult time connecting to Anmol’s character in this episode. Both Mehwish Hayat and Hamayun Saeed failed to blow me away in tonight’s episode but I am very willing to be pleasantly surprised in the upcoming episodes. Saba Hameed made her presence felt just the way she always does. I liked the way the actors playing the leading roles in the drama were introduced in the beginning of the episode.

dl2

Overall, this episode was strictly okay. There was absolutely nothing about the story or the characters that instantly wins you over. The preview of the next episode showed Mohid asking his mother to go to Anmol’s house to ask for her hand in marriage. Will that lead to even more ‘chaos’? The interactions between Anmol and Mohid in the preview did suggest that they will have “rocky relationship”!

Gul-e-Rana – Episode 17

With the exception of a few scenes and developments overall this was one of the best episodes of Gul-e-Rana. Finally, the viewers can see a strong woman in Rana, someone who is not willing to succumb to pressure and emotional blackmail and also someone who knows that getting out of her Taya’s house is going to be a gradual process. I found Rana’s confidence in herself very convincing and if her character keeps on making as much as sense as it did in tonight’s episode then I am willing to accept her as a strong woman. Rana’s conversation with Asher (bhai) went to show that all this time she was quiet because she thought that even if she shared her feelings with her mother or anyone else, she will not get any support from them. It took time for Rana to come into terms with her situation and at least for now it looks like she knows exactly what she wants from her life. It was extremely good to see Rana not coming to Adeel’s rescue although there was a time when it appeared to be that she was the only one who could help him get out of this situation. Sajjal Ali looked stunning in tonight’s episode and she did complete justice to her character.

Watching Adeel in a situation which was in some ways very similar to that of Rana’s in the past was definitely very pleasant. He forced Rana to get married to him, there was a time when he was so sure that no one would believe Rana even if she told everyone the truth and now Adeel found himself in the same situation. Adeel of course had the option of going ‘abroad’ which Rana did not have and a part of me is happy too that this marriage will not take place. It really did seem like Adeel was in Murree and he never left the country.

gr1

The reasons behind Taya Abu’s decision to marry Adeel with Maria however were not very convincing. He had absolutely no reason to believe Maria and doubt his son in the first place. Taya abu has been shown as a very wise man, someone who is not just head of a family but who is a very accomplished businessman too therefore he really should have questioned Maria even before Adeel decided to leave the country. Also, if Rana does not want to spend the rest of her life with Adeel why is Taya abu not considering a divorce instead of marrying her present husband to another girl. There are times when Taya abu is turned into someone who cannot make a rational decision even though the decisions he makes are not made in haste but he takes his time in making these ‘just’ decisions.

Asher “bhai’s” true feelings were finally revealed in tonight’s episode. The way he looked at himself in the mirror showed that he probably didn’t think he deserved to be with someone like Rana. Asher has always been shown as someone who does not have a lot of confidence in himself mostly because of the way his father was always belittling him but the recent changes in his personality might give him the courage to share his feelings with Rana. Honestly speaking I still find this particular track extremely useless other than the fact that Asher and his family’s support made it possible for Rana to get the time she needed to think things through. If she was in her Taya’s house, she couldn’t do all that she did today. We all know that Rana will never get married to Asher and she harbors no such feelings for him therefore Asher’s feelings for Rana will not effect the story in any way, they will only validate Adeel’s claims that Asher is in love with Rana. (Cialis)

gr2

I must say that even though some developments in this episode were highly unconvincing (like Taya abu’s decision to marry Adeel with Maria, not thinking about how Rana and Adeel will live in the same house now) but overall this was an episode which gave me a reason to look forward to more. Except for Rubina Ashraf all the other actors gave their best performances in tonight’s episode. Feroze Khan was flawless as someone who was losing all control and Sajjal Ali is definitely more convincing as the truly strong Rana than the one who only made tall claims in the previous so many episodes. It was refreshing to see Rana taking some practical steps to move on.

Zohra Sehgal and the family

0

Zohra Sehgal is a famous Indian artist who started her career before the partition in 1947. This article is a compilation of the famous family members from the Zohra Sehgal’s family.

Zohra Sehgal

Zohra Sehgal (زہرہ سہگل)
Zohra Sehgal was born as Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan on 27 April 1912 into a traditional Muslim family in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, to Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum, belonging to a Rohilla Pathan family of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. She was third of seven children – Zakullah, Hajrah, Ikramullah, Uzra (Uzra Butt), Anna and Sabira – and grew up in Chakrata, now in Uttarakhand (near Dehradun).

She lost her mother while still young. In accordance with their mother’s wishes, she and her sister were sent to Queen Mary College, Lahore. Strict purdah was observed there and the few males invited to speak did so from behind a screen. As a result of seeing her sister’s failed marriage, she decided to pursue a career, rather than get married.

Upon graduating, her maternal uncle, Sahebzada Saeeduzzafar Khan, who was based in Edinburgh, arranged for her to apprentice under a British actor. They started from Lahore by car and, en route, crossed Iran, Palestine, before reaching Damascus, Syria, where she met her cousin. Then they traveled into Egypt and caught a boat to Europe in Alexandria.

In Europe, her aunt Dicta took her to try in the Mary Wigman’s ballet school in Dresden, Germany, but she had not ever danced, having lived in purdah for so long. Nevertheless, she got admission and became the first Indian to study at the institution. She stayed in Dresden for the next three years studying modern dance, while living in the house of Countess Liebenstein. She happened to watch the Shiv-Parvati ballet by Uday Shankar who was touring Europe. This was to change her life forever as, impressed by the performance, she went back stage to meet Uday Shankar, who promised her a job on her return to India, at the completion of her course.

While still in Europe, she received a telegram from Uday Shankar: “Leaving for Japan tour. Can you join immediately?” On 8 August 1935, she joined his troupe and danced across Japan, Egypt, Europe and the US, as a leading lady, along with French dancer, Simkie. When Uday Shankar moved back to India in 1940, she became a teacher at the Uday Shankar India Cultural Centre at Almora. It was here that she met her future husband Kameshwar Segal (کامیشور سیگل), a young scientist, painter and dancer from Indore, eight years her junior, belonging to the Radha Soami sect.

She married Kameshwar Sehgal, a Hindu. There was initial opposition from her parents, but they eventually gave their approval for the union. Zohra and Kameshwar had two children, Kiran Segal (daughter) and Pavan Sehgal (son).

For a while the couple worked in Uday’s dance institute at Almora. Both became accomplished dancers and choreographers. Kameshwar composed a noted ballet for human puppets and choreographed the ballet Lotus Dance. When it shut down later, they migrated to Lahore in the near western India and set up their own Zohresh Dance Institute. The growing communal tension preceding the Partition of India made them feel unwelcome. They returned to Bombay, with one-year-old daughter Kiran Segal. Here in Bombay (now Mumbai) here sister Uzra was also a leading artist of the Prithvi Theatre. Zohra also joined the Prithvi Theatre in 1945 as an actress. Being part of Prithvi theatre she toured various cities of India and performed for the next 14 years.

She also started acting in Bollywood films from 1943 with a supporting role in film Rahgeer. She continued working in Bollywood films in supporting roles where Sanwariya in 2007 was her last film.

She stayed in London, United Kingdom till early 1990’s. In London she worked as a classical dance instructor and also acted in various British television and theatre plays. She also worked for British cinema.
She appeared in The Courtesans of Bombay directed by James Ivory in 1982. This paved way for an important role as Lady Chatterjee in the television adaptation The Jewel in the Crown (ITV, 1984). Thus starting the second phase of her career, as she went on to appear in The Raj Quartet, The Jewel in the Crown, Tandoori Nights, My Beautiful Laundrette, et al.

Zohra Sehgal returned to India in early 1990’s and then continued working for Indian television and Bollywood films. Sanwariya in 2007 was her last film. Bachaana(بچانا)’s box office report

Bachaana (بچانا) is the second major Pakistani film released this year after Ho Mann Jahan (ہو من جہاں) released on 1st January 2016. Released on 26th February 2016, Bachaana has earned decent figures on the box office. The whole past week saw a major dip in the cinema business for two major reason. Firstly Cricket Asia Cup is in progress and secondly the law and order situation was tense through out the week due to hanging of Mumtaz Qadri the murderer of the former Governor of the Punjab Salman Taseer.

Despite these factors Bachaaana has emerged with decent figures and became the highest earning film of the week. The film has earned a total of 3.34 crores (33.40 million) rupees in its first week. The film has received mixed reviews from print media. Though the actual budget of the Bachaana is not made public, as per press reports it had a limited budget with very few characters. The film also features three songs. It was released on 84 screens. Unlike other Urdu films, it is also screened in Peshawar, KPK in Naz cinema the only cinema of the city which has started screening Urdu movies. The other cinemas (around ten in number) of Peshawar only screen the Pashto films. The

With these figures the film is expected to cross 5 crore mark by the end of second week.

In the first two months of 2016, as usual many Bollywood films have also been released like Fitoor, Sanam Re, Wazir, Love Shuda all of which have performed below expectations. The only successful film of 2016 so far is Ho Mann Jahan which has earned nearly 15.50 crore in Pakistan and 5 crore in other countries (US, UK, UAE) thus earning around 20.50 crores.

Komal Rizvi Tells Which Qualities She Wants In Her Life Partner

0

Komal Rizvi talked about the qualities she was looking for in the man she will be willing to marry when she was invited as a guest in Nadia Khan’s Morning Show. The topic was started by Nadia Khan who said that the best part of marriage were children. To this Komal replied,

“I love children. I wish I had kids. I am so close to my nieces and nephews. I am so blessed in every way but I only have one wish, I really want a baby.”

6

Replying to the question about what she was looking for in a man Komal said,

“It is really strange that my list is very basic and simple but the Pakistani men nowadays don’t even come up to those standards. The man I want to marry should be sharif, he should respect me, he should love me and not look or think about other women. He should respect my family and he should be a good father.”

2

Komal Rizvi said that this wasn’t really too much to ask for but somehow she has not met a man like that. She also said,

“I want a good man, an honest man. I am very honest myself. I hardly ever lie unless I feel that someone will be very hurt if I speak the truth.”

1

Komal Rizvi got married once but the marriage did not work out. Nadia Khan asked her if there was a friend who she had a good bonding with but Komal said there was no one like that in her life.

Ab Kar Meri Rafugari – Episode 6

So, this episode showed us Jazib’s path to recovery and Tabaan’s mein beqasoor hoon falling on deaf ears. Tabaan’s fate has been sealed and she is to be married off as soon as possible.

Although Mujahid had till now been shown to be a stern man, he nonetheless (until this episode) came across as a loving father. In the scene where Shakeel makes a huge fuss over Tabaan standing outside the gate, I like how she stood her ground. Mujahid does not have much to say which I found a bit strange and ‘resolves’ the matter by announcing that Tabaan will not step outside the gate. Matter resolved (sigh). I was taken aback when later Tabaan slapped Shakeel. I really did not see that coming and even more so, when Mujahid slaps Tabaan. A few readers commented last week, that there are quite a few scenes of physical abuse in the novel and that made me watch this episode with quite a wary mind.

Meanwhile, whilst dominoes of thappars is being played at Tabaan’s household, Jazib begins physiotherapy and begins to walk again, albeit with the help of a stick. He seems to be contrite and sorry when he kept apologizing to his parents in the last episode but we realize that was only temporary (if that).

Chachi’s plea to Shakeel to not cause a fasaad made me laugh. So rich coming from her when she is the ultimate fasaad hunter! Mujahid has come up with the perfect solution to the whole fiasco – Tabaan ki shaadi. Waisay I love (sarcasm) how that is the solution in all the dramas nowadays. Larka peechay parha hai, shaadi karwa do jaldi se, kissi se bhi. Larki ko koi pasand hai, shaadi karwa do kissi se bhi minus the pasand. Larki nay cheenk maari – shaadi karwa do. Okay, maybe not.

Like always, Tabaan is not told anything but her seemingly new love of hanging around in the kitchen seems to be keeping her well informed – when she overhears the ‘Aunty’ speaking to her mother and Taayi about what Shakeel told her and then now of Mujahid’s plan to get her married. I was surprised at Tabaan’s (non) reaction to the decision of her fate. I expected a bit more from her since we are shown she is a confident girl who is not afraid to speak her mind but I suppose the slap from her father has shocked and subdued her.

Jazib so did not seem to be the romantic intense hero and rather an old majnu (and not a very brainy one but then I guess majnu was not the most rational person alive) when he walks off in the direction of Tabaan’s house in his pyjamas and with his stick. When Tabaan’s mother says to Taayi that she did not see the vehshat in Mujahid’s eyes and that woh kisi bhi rah chaltay kay haath thamma dain gay I was like haan haan tau Jazib abhi he guzra hai bahar, ussi kay haath thamma dain!

I do not understand the reason for Shakeel’s interest in Tabaan. He was beside himself with anger when she slapped him so I wonder is it revenge that makes him insist his mother speak for his rishta. But if so, he would have just said that to her. His line about how bahu aap ki marzi ki ho ya meri, hashr tau uss ka hona he hai was funny. While Taayi and Myeda have such a lovely bond with Mujahid’s family, Chachi and her good for nothing son are just as awful. I have to say, Sakina Summo and Ali Safina played their parts really well as the trouble making, despicable duo today.

I wish Tabaan’s mother had more of a backbone and could stand up for her daughter for nobody seems to tell Chachi off for yelling all the time, so her mother could at least defend her. Yes, she and Taayi are meant to be mild natured but it is depressing how they just take the back seat as Mujahid runs the show. I find Tabaan’s interest in wanting to know what Jazib looks like easy to relate to and with Jazib not looking like he is going to back off, I suppose the two will meet and things will begin to go downhill. Well, further downhill!

I watched the OST yesterday and it seems like quite a bit of violence and rona dhona is to follow. When Usna Shah was gearing up for tears in the scene she slaps Shakeel, I thought no,no, please no…a weeping (read gasping) Usna has been done to death and I can not take any more. Although we were saved from it today –Allah say kuch aur he maang laiti – I am not sure what is to follow.

There is nothing about the play or the storyline that seems to be new. But then, most of the dramas on air or at least the ones I am watching do not seem to be showing anything new and what really sets one apart from the other are the cast, direction and production values and I can not really complain about either of these in Ab Kar Meri Rafugari. I guess it all boils down to now how interesting the story remains.

Are many of you following this play? What did you think of today’s episode? Please share your thoughts!

Fawad Khan Promotes Kapoor And Sons In Style!

0

Fawad Khan posted on instagram yesterday that the promotions of his upcoming Bollywood venture had begun. He sounded excited about the “madness” that was going to be a part of this promotional schedule. All the leading actors were seen promoting the film but Fawad Khan with his very own style stood out more in the crowd. There was a time when Fawad Khan openly declared that he wasn’t really the kind of person who would spend a lot of money on clothes and styling. Things have certainly changed in that department. Fawad Khan is a Bollywood hero now which means that he has an image to maintain. We have seen very casual pictures of Fawad Khan when he was seen attending parties etc but now every time he makes an appearance it is in style. Sometimes he is seen sporting a formal look and other times like in these pictures he is seen in a casual but stylish look.

Mana Ka Gharana – Episode 12!

Ohkay so, honestly speaking, this episode of Mana Ka Gharana was heaps better in comparison to the previous episodes because it gave me something that I was looking forward to for a long long time. Even though there isn’t any drastic change in the attitude of Mana Ka Gharana but slowly & steadily they have started standing up against Gul Bahar, so it gives me hope that the time is soon going to come when she will be thrown out of their place & their hearts.

I am glad that the things that I said in the previous review were taken personally by Ghaalib Uncle & he chose to prove me & everyone else wrong by telling that he is very much alive & kickin’. I think in the entire journey of this drama so far, Ghaalib Uncle didn’t get this much coverage that he got in this episode where he put forth what he thinks & how he won’t tolerate any disparity among his family members. Both Ghaalib & Maalik have started to understand that things are going at the wrong path & something needs to be done ASAP to fix them.

Saleha continued to be unreasonable & she also tried to melt Ghaalib’s heart by speaking about all the sacrifices she has given to keep this family together, which I think should’ve followed by a dialogue also about how she hasn’t left any stone unturned in drifting them apart too. According to Saleha, she raised Maalik & Khizer as her children, which makes me think that she is an epic kind of a mother who believes in believing more on the guy who has just walked into their lives. Saleha is only using such words to conceal how unfair she has been because it is so obvious that if she had actually thought of Khizer as her son, she would’ve never done something so wrong with him that too based on what Shehryaar told & showed them.

Maalik was disappointed to hear what Khizer had to say & just like everyone else, he also started misunderstanding Khizer & believed what he heard from him. Even though Maalik’s wisdom missed the spot there, he still has redeemed himself by standing up against Gul Bahar & by giving her a much needed shut up call. Gul Bahar needs to understand that she is not a part of this family anymore & if she is living here, it is only because she is now going to get related to them through Shehryaar, so she needs to keep her mouth zipped & shouldn’t interfere in their personal matters. The things she said to herself about her beauty were cringe-worthy. If only Gul Bahar wasn’t so shallow to understand that a good face doesn’t earn you the love & respect as much as your good nature does but oh well!!!

I am glad that Gul Bahar got snubbed twice in this episode. First one was by Ghaalib who told her not to swoop in when he was taking a decision on Zarri’s matter. Then Gul Bahar got rebuked by Maalik when she uttered non-sense about Khizer by putting Mana’s future with him in the spotlight. I think these many shut-up calls are enough for any sane person to understand how she is not needed here but Gul Bahar takes dheetai to another level, so I am not surprised why she is still there.

I really don’t understand what Shehryaar wants. His ego got hurt by Khizer & he turned Khizer’s life upside down, therefore by now he should’ve had his closure, why he is still stuck on him is something that I can’t really comprehend. It is good to see that at least Mana doesn’t entertain those thoughts of Shehryaar & tells him to speak about something else. I think there will come a time when her limit will be pushed & she will give him a shut up call too. I actually thought it was Gul Bahar’s idea to demand the property from Saleha but the way Shehryaar showed excitement over it showed that he falls in the same category too & this was a planning done by both of them as well. I liked the fact that Mana spoke against it as she didn’t want anything from her parents. Mana also raised a valid question about where will her family live if they’ll give her everything to which Saleha told her about her plan B. I am glad that at least Mana has started showing some sensibility & isn’t too happy with the situation.

Mana is definitely having a hard time accepting the fact that her whole family has fallen apart & even though she might pretend not knowing about the root-cause, she does know to some extent. Yes, for now she is blaming Khizer & speaks against him because she still holds him responsible for everything but she also knows that things haven’t been the same ever since Shehryaar has turned against Khizer. Mana decided to speak to Khizer about how much he hurt her father, which definitely hurt Khizer even more & he decided to show up & seek forgiveness in a hope that Saleha will let him meet Ghaalib, which she didn’t allow. I think as much as Mana speaks against Khizer, deep down in her heart she still isn’t convinced that Khizer can cause harm to her family members like that. I somehow like how they have shown her confusion & I think she will be the one who will bring them all together, at least this is what I think.

I must say, I am not thrilled to see Laila’s growing interest in Khizer. She is just a tourist & if she is thinking to grab a spot in Khizer’s heart, then she really needs to get a life. No tourist goes bonkers over the localities like that, that is why I am not at all convinced with this track & its developments. The preview seemed good where Maalik will clearly speak to Zarri about how he feels & will tell her about his decision, I am looking forward to it the most. Also, seems like Laila will turn into a daasi & will do Khizer’s seva, which I ain’t looking forward to at all. Also, I must say, with the over-dosage of the conversations that take place in either rooms or cafes, it was refreshing to see Khizer & Maalik having a conversation in an open-air, amidst the nature, it was different & seemed pretty appeasing. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Mana Ka Gharana.

Gohar Rasheed started his career as an actor from theatre and like all the other theatre actors he is a very well established performer who is liked by the viewers for his perfect acting. Gohar Rasheed likes to dream big, that is why in his recent interview with MAG Weekly he shared a wish which many actors may not even dare to dream. He said,

“I want to win an Oscar, I really want to for being a good actor and I think I will someday.”

gauhar rasheed

Gohar does not only wish to win an Oscar but he also has enough faith in his talent to know that some day he will win it. He also has big plans for the future. Talking about his future plans he said,

“I’m thinking of venturing into direction. As far as acting is concerned, three films are in the pipeline out of which I’ve just signed one which is the mega project.”

Gohar Rasheed also said that his main motivation for doing good work was all the bad work that was being done nowadays. He said,

“Very honestly in Pakistan it is the bad work that I get to see is what inspires me to act. When I see unsatisfactory work, I feel motivated in a way and tell myself that this is something I don’t want to do.”

gohar rasheed

Gohar Rasheed also talked about his role in Mann Mayal. Talking about it he said,

“My role has shades, has lots of hues. That sums up – I’m that boy who is careless. He’s the kind of guy who means business to himself, but he goes through a transition and that changes everything, but what the change will be and how it will be, that’s the interesting part.”

He believes that acting is not to act, but react. Gohar Rasheed has big plans for the future and he wants to work hard to get where he wants to get.

Judai – Episode 3

So this episode had us wondering throughout and then ended leaving us still guessing – what is Hassan’s secret? He is adamant to tell Mehru ‘everything’ even though Junaid discourages him to do so.

Ah, but let me not digress from a much more pressing issue first – Alia ko susraal mein rehna chahyay tha ya phir Ami kay ghar? And the sinister music (punctuated strangely by the sound of crickets chirping!!) in the background when Haider rings Alia and then when he goes to her mother’s house suggests Alia should have stayed put in her susraal. I feel this issue (if it really was an issue) could have gone either way and should have been fine. I honestly did not get what the big deal was but then I do realize that things like these do become bones of contention in our society. She could have chosen to stay and joined the patrol at the hospital because yes she was now part of the ‘Hassans’ but then everyone was at the hospital and what was she to do alone in a new home about which she knew nothing of (as she had not even spent one night fully there). If she was staying at her parent’s house then at least the Hassans did not need to worry about her. Plus she was in the same city. However, the way her mother controls the situation and would not let her directly answer her husband was out of line and also the fact that Alia did not go visit her father in law at the hospital after the first night was a bit odd.

Anyhow, moving on, when Hamza rings Zaina from the hospital and the way Zaina hesitates to answer Hamza’s phone shows us that she wants to keep a distance but at the same time is interested in Hamza and ends up answering the call. Alishba’s outburst was out of line but I suppose will contribute to Zaina giving Hamza the cold shoulder for a while.

Saima (I still do not know the name of her character) seems to be quite lost. It appears that she zones in and out of the world and also takes medication to help with her ‘condition’. I really found the scene between her and Imran Aslam very touching. I liked his conversation with Zaina earlier when he tells her he does not allow hatred and bitterness to engulf his being and says she should not either. He appears to be sensible and I feel he is perfect for his role. The flitting dementia that seems to affect Saima and her not knowing whether she ate or not resulting in her son saying he would feed her with his own hands so he would know she ate was a bit filmy and dramatic I know but still it brought a lump in my throat as they both looked so convincing as mother and son, with the OST playing beautifully in the background.

Hamza, with his constant need to express gratitude of dosti and confide in Minahil about his love, and then Saman’s constant brain washing has Minahil’s head floating in the clouds. Uff how annoying is Saman (Huma Nawab). Waisay ever since Huma Nawab has made a comeback in dramas I just do not like the roles she has been portraying and her acting in general. Khair, Saman really needs a hobby and no, I do not mean matchmaking for her Minahil!

Hassan tries to tell Mehru all but gets interrupted. The scene between Mehru and Hassan was very sweet and natural. He feels his end is near and wants to make sure she has no grievances against him. Waisay kia hai that he needs to tell Mehru? I could almost physically feel the burden on his chest! We get he wants to tell her something but what is it that it is being dragged out so much? I felt like saying bhai, Mehru ko baad mein batatay rehna magar pls ab pehlay mujhay bata do! Spit it out already!

Overall, the episode was alright. I suppose we are all being given further insight into the characters and their personalities. I do like Affan Waheed normally but his hey what’s up roles are getting a bit monotonous. Again, as I mentioned in one of my other reviews, the pairing of actors seems a bit awkward sometimes as in Bheegi Palkein (A Plus), Affan Waheed and Faryal Mehmood are siblings and here Faryal Mehmood is falling (fallen?) in love with him. Is there no way, my layman mind wonders, that actors/actresses can somehow not commit to projects that are aired at the same time.

Last week, the preview we saw for this episode was misleading as it showed the demise of Hassan but even though it seems his end is near, he was still alive when the episode ended. Samina Peerzada is a delight to watch and I love her in this avatar. The senior actors, especially Usman and Samina Peerzada seem to be stealing the show and although Khalid Malik, Sana Askari, Affan Waheed, Neelum Munir and Faryal Mehmood seem to be doing their bit, nothing about their acting or characters stand out yet. Maybe it is too early to judge. I am waiting to find out what Hassan is hiding and looking forward to the scenes between Samina Peerzada and Saima, both being wonderful actresses in my opinion. I loved all the theories brought up in the comments on my last review – but this episode has left me none the wiser! How did you find this episode and the drama so far? Please do share your thoughts!

Beqasoor – Episode 17

After watching this episode all I can say is that it is time to end this drama!! Every time it seems like the story is headed towards a conclusion a new twist, which is nothing more than a way to stretch the drama, is added to the story. Shehryar’s intentions were quite clear even before therefore everything that happened today was quite predictable. What can I say, in a country where girls who belong to middle class families cannot find one decent suitor these girls in our dramas have a line of suitors who will do anything to marry them! Hira appeared out of nowhere and Shehryar’s friend knows that but he doesn’t have a problem with it. Zeeshan and Hira are poles apart but even then Zeeshan thinks Hira will make the perfect wife and do they even know that Hira isn’t even divorced yet? Babur is another eligible bachelor who even now thinks that he can trust Hira’s father.

bq

The only good thing about this episode was that Amin did not succeed in taking Hira with him. Other than that I have no expectations from this drama now since the writer is bent on stretching the story and any hopes of character development have dashed to the ground since the changes in characters seem more like mood swings than developments! Hira has forgotten that her ‘ideal abu’ once tried to marry him off to someone who was old enough to be his father. Just like all the previous episodes Hira’s feelings for her step father were not the least bit relatable. She holds Shehryar accountable for everything but somehow she is willing to forgive Waseem for everything. Waseem’s love for Hira did not move me at all since he has changed so many times in the past too but he always goes back to being his old self.

Even after everything that happened in the past Babur thought it would be okay to pay a visit to Waseem’s house. Babur’s mother’s reluctance was definitely more convincing than his eagerness to support Sadaf since she is living in Waseem’s house and they just cannot go there unannounced.

bq1

Hira, Sadaf and ‘Abu’ are one big happy family now but somehow at this point I am finding it very hard to feel anything for any of the characters since the story is being stretched for no reason. All the actors have done complete justice to their respective characters except for Saboor Ali who tends to go overboard most of the time. The production values of the drama like many of the other dramas on air nowadays is top notch too but unfortunately the repetition and unwanted excessive emotionalism tends to be really annoying. The director has always focused on excessive rona dhona right from the start and it is getting very irritating with every passing episode. Samina Peerzada looked beautiful and graceful in white. She has an undeniable screen presence and I hope to see her in more powerful roles in the future.

Syed Noor Accuses Sharmeen Obaid Of Stealing His Idea

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy recently won an Oscar for her documentary “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” which brought to light the custom of honour killings in Pakistan. The story focused on one particular girl who escaped an attempt of honour killing after her family threw her in the river thinking they had killed her but she survived. The documentary was also shown in the Prime Minister house and just few days ago two people who were convicted of honour killing were given the punishment prescribed by the law.

This documentary has won an Oscar but in Pakistan it is getting different reactions by different people. Some people think that the West is honouring Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy for showing and promoting a bad image of Pakistan, an accusation which Sharmeen answered herself saying that she had no such intention but she wanted to highlight these issues so that there will be laws against them and also to cause awareness among people.

5

The new twist in this story is that Syed Noor who is a very well known director and producer has said that Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s documentary was inspired from a film he made a some 3 years back. Not only this he said that she even stole the name of his film which was “Price Of Honour” by changing honour to forgiveness. Syed Noor said that his film also told the story of a weak woman who came from a poor background who raised her voice against the rich and powerful who wanted to exploit her and other women like her. Syed Noor said that he had no problem that Sharmeen was inspired by the film but he was upset that he did not get any credit for it.

6

Moammar Rana also said that Sharmeen Obaid was highlighting Pakistan’s bad image. He also challenged her to make a documentary about the effects and victims of drone attacks.

Sharmeen on the other hand in an interview few days ago said that she started making this documentary after she read the story about the survivor in the newspaper and decided to track her down.Syed Noor said that he was not going to take any legal action against the film maker but he was very unhappy with the situation.

Mera Yaar Miladay – Episode 4

So, after a couple of fast paced episodes, this episode seemed to be a bit on the slower side – with less action and more reflection. Oh, that is except if you count Master Sb who seemed to be very active –wandering around the mohalla, confronting and being confronted.

Mushq is ecstatic that the wedding to Qureshi did not take place and is reassured of Fahd’s love for her. In the scene where she is twirling round and round in joy I felt like jumping up and stopping her as I would when my kids do that because watching her was making me dizzy!

mymd3

Anyhow, Master Sb confronts Qureshi and asks why he backed out of the wedding at the last minute. Qureshi, with his freshly dyed mustache and waggling eyebrows, is indignant and in turn tells Master Sb off who then learns that Dabbu Bhai was the one who was actually behind the whole ‘baraat not showing up’. Master Sb is also told that the mohalla has been talking about him (do they ever talk about anything else but Master Sb and his gharana) and want him to leave the mohalla but that it would be in his best interests if he left himself without being (physically) forced to.

Master Sb comes home and takes out his anger and frustration on Mushq who escapes into her room when Dado intervenes and Master Sb promptly locks her in. Chalo bhai, Mushq locked in again. I winced when he grabbed Mushq by her hair and am glad we were saved from having to see him beat her up with his stick, thanks to Dado.

We see Master Sb meet Dabbu Bhai and ask meray saath aisa kyun kiya. Becharay (not!) Master Sb, kabhi Qureshi se kabhi Dabbu se wohi sawaal. I think we are meant to really feel sorry for Master Sb but I do not feel bad for him as I think he is also partly to blame for bringing these situations upon himself. But that’s just how I feel. I get Dabbu Bhai is shown to be very good at heart but this whole guilt trip he is having over the Master Sb incident is getting a bit much. When he beats up Qureshi (haha) and backs off when Qureshi’s daughter pleads with him I just feel that the writer is trying too hard to show how good at heart he is and this in my opinion is taking off edge of the gunda/dada of the mohalla impression that we were earlier given. Ah but then he isn’t a gunda is he? He is a ‘social worker’ remember?! Go figure!

So déjà vu. Mushq is locked up again, imploring Dado and Zeba to let her out, Dado bebass and Zeba – I am not sure how I feel about Zeba with her glasses and the distracting ringlets. She is not evil but does not seem to feel Mushq’s pain or have much sisterly hamdardi. I wonder if she has more to offer to the story. We already know Mushq blames her for her plight saying if she hadn’t run off to Abba with the letter then she would have been on the train and off to Lahore.

I suppose the turning point in the episode was Striker’s advice/solution to the whole issue except it left me confused. I found it odd. Confusing. Misleading. The answer to stop the mohalla’s wagging tongue is that Dabbu Bhai gets married. Initially I thought to Mushq but that doesn’t make sense. Does he mean that Dabbu Bhai should
get married in general, to someone so that people stop linking him to Mushq?

Mehru’s scene with Dabbu Bhai also failed to make an impact. What is Mehru really after? When she is thinking to herself about how all her mehnat is going to go to waste and she will be left khaali haath she hardly came across as a lovestruck girl. What is her motive behind having Dabbu wrapped round her little finger? When she says kitna
samjhaya tha apnay dil ko! Iss dil ki na..ulta latka daina chahyay ya phir kaan marornay chahyay it made me laugh out loud envisioning a dil having ears and being hung upside down.

mymd1

Thor kay desi bhai‘s conversation gives us an insight into the potential entry of Aslam bhai into the mohalla. Asal politician tau yeh he hain with his words of wisdom, jab do laug lartay hain tau faida teesray ka he hota hai. Rise of third bhai maybe?

mymd2

Seems like Master Sb has taken the mohallay walay’s words to heart and meets with an estate agent to have his house sold within 5 days. Dabbu Bhai makes a call to the estate agent which sounded very gunda like. Sorry, I meant social worker-ish!

As I mentioned earlier, I found this episode a bit slow. And that is okay as long as it picks up pace in the next one. Ahmed Ali is really not working for me and I have a feeling his character will be done away with or will get sidelined soon but then I could be wrong. The episode was pretty much about how Master Sb in his be-bassi has dethroned Dabbu Bhai who in a jhatka seems to have lost his hold over the entire mohalla. In next week’s preview we see Aslam Bhai make his entry. Master Sb gave me pause many a time today thinking he will finally have the heart attack I keep bracing myself for and in next week’s episode seems like it really does happen. Ooops.

Sajal Ali did not have a lot of screen time (relatively) in today’s episode as it was more focused on Dabbu Bhai and Master Sb. I truly believe Faisal Qureshi can carry off any role he is given so I have no problem with his acting but I am unsure I like the way his character is developing. I liked how Dado was short with the neighbour who came
looking to gossip. I must say, it is a very vaila (faarigh) mohalla. Waisay how come nobody in this mohalla has caught Fahd making it to Mushq’s bedroom window, not once but twice?

I suppose the next couple of episodes will focus more on a faceoff between Dabbu Bhai and Aslam Bhai but I hope that track does not get dragged out much and there is also some development on the Mushq-Fahd-Dabbu Bhai front. How did you like this episode? Please do share your thoughts!

Preet Na Kariyo Koi – Episode 18!

Ohkay so, this episode of Preet Na Kariyo Koi was amazing too but I am disappointed that none of the events took place that were shown in the preview last week because I was eagerly waiting to see all of that. This isn’t the first time when the editors have resorted to a misleading editing just to keep the interest in the show intact but they shouldn’t do that as those who’ve made it till this episode are going to follow it till the end too!

Shagufta finalized everything on Noori’s behalf & wanted to get over with the Nikkah ASAP as she could see that Noori & Roomi weren’t going to budge at all. It was for the first time when Noori retaliated & told her mother clearly that she will do as she pleases because she loves Roomi. Shagufta was forced to see a mirror once again where she could see herself in Noori even though she didn’t want to think about it. Suleri has helped Shagufta way more than she realizes. Shagufta treats him as her confidant but for Suleri, helping Shagufta means something entirely different. Even though, I am glad that the writer didn’t show any equation except that of a professional one between Suleri & Shagufta, but I don’t mind what Suleri feels for her. They are a bunch of loyal people…who’re loyal to a fault. Shagufta was loyal to Shams & similarly Suleri is loyal to Shagufta. I think at this stage, when the drama’s about to end, it is safe to say that Suleri wasn’t negative to begin with & he wasn’t how we all perceived him to be. He ended up becoming a strong & positive support to Shagufta & there’s nothing wrong with that. The way he admitted to himself that he never had the courage to let Shagufta know what he feels, it actually made me feel bad for him because of his unrequited love.

I really like how the writer has kept things so realistic. The way Roomi’s father told him clearly that he won’t help his son was quite convincing. Roomi’s father is well aware of the power Shagufta Shehzadi holds so it was natural for him to feel that way. He even suggested that Roomi should leave Noori behind & should try to forget her because he didn’t have much courage to fight with Shagufta but Roomi didn’t seem convinced. I think for a person like Roomi’s father, who has lived a peaceful life, it was totally understandable why he didn’t want his family to get involved in any controversy with a person like Shagufta Shehzadi.

Roomi decided to seek help from Ilyas & Chachi & they decided to help them too but then came Bhola, who had an entirely different story to tell. I didn’t quite understand why Bhola felt that Ilyas & Chachi lied to Roomi & they wanted Noori to get married to the one Shagufta chose for her. Bhola has spent his whole life with them, so he should be the last person doubting their pure intentions. I must say, in my opinion, Bhola’s character is the weakest because if we look back, I wasn’t quite convinced with his mature dialogues like ‘baji mere liye marr gai’ & his rage altogether & now again, I neither liked nor I understood why he spoke against Chachi & Ilyas. Also, the things Bhola said about Shagufta suggested that deep down he has forgiven her & he misses her, that is why he has stopped blaming her for their father’s death, which again seemed to be coming out of the blue because there was no development in this track or story to tell what made him come to terms with the fact & what changed the way he felt about Shagufta.

Honestly speaking, the way Shams spoke to Faraz’s mother about Noori & Roomi’s love affair was quite odd. I would’ve loved if Shams had told the same thing to her with an intention of helping his daughter but no, he only wanted to put Shagufta down & he wanted to pinch her so bad that he didn’t feel awkward badmouthing his only child, which made me detest him a bit more. To be honest, at this stage, I am not at all interested to know what will happen in Shams’s track because he has lost all the respect completely.

Well, Shagufta didn’t see it coming what she just heard from Shams. After so many years of taking those bangles as a blessing from her Chachi, Shagufta found out that they weren’t sent by her Chachi, but were snatched by Shams, from Mariam. It didn’t take her long to admit that this was a crime that Shams committed. The way Shagufta froze after hearing Shams’s confession was done beautifully. It was like she never ever in her wildest dream imagined that Shams would do something like that & would ruin that beautiful memory of her Chachi that Shagufta clung onto all these years. Shagufta kept those bangles close to her heart that is why they were sitting right in front of her, in her room, at her arm’s reach, which showed that they made her feel connected to her Chachi but Shams ruined everything for her. The way Shagufta spoke about her love turning into her punishment was heart-breaking. Yes, Shagufta earned it, yes, she deserved it because she found no flaws in a guy who hurt her father but, if we speak about loyalty, Shagufta remained loyal to Shams, if we speak about love, Shagufta loved him enough, that is why in this particular moment, I felt for her because she has been chasing a shadow & no matter what she does, she won’t succeed, but she deserves happiness of some sort at least!!!

Overall, this episode was directed beautifully like all the previous episodes of Preet Na Kariyo Koi. The preview seemed more promising & looks like we’ll get to see what we all were waiting for. Shagufta will reunite with Chachi, Mariam & Ilyas only to find out that Bhola & Roomi will take Noori away from her. I hope after finding the truth about Roomi’s family background, Shagufta accepts their decision of getting married. I can’t wait for the next episode already. I am so stoked that even after so many episodes have passed, this drama has still kept our interest alive to such an extent that we’re looking forward to what’s yet to come. Please share your thoughts about this beautiful episode of Preet Na Kariyo Koi.

Fawad Khan is usually playing the hero, whether he is cast as a lead in a role or he is assigned the job of being the brand ambassador for a product. Fawad Khan has been seen in many Pakistani commercials lately. He played the ideal husband in one commercial and the prince charming in the other one. Fawad Khan has played these roles many times on screen but this time in his new advertisement he is seen in a different avatar. He is generally popular in his friends as a very jolly person and in this commercial he is seen playing the role of a person who is silly and funny. Oye Hoye is the latest brand of crisps who have been advertising their product everywhere lately. It is a pack of crisps that is seen as a big threat to major companies because of its taste.

Fawad Khan has always promoted only those brand in which he has great faith so it is once again good to see him endorsing a product which is a quality product.

Mann Mayal – Episode 6

Mannu and Salahuddin both moved on to the next phase of their life in this episode. This particular stage of their life is very different from the their recent past. In fact it is so different that I felt like I was watching a completely different drama altogether. The difference between their past and present life is just as vast as the one between Hyderabad and Karachi! Mannu’s carefree life which was reigned by madness has been replaced by a reality check! Although Mannu never wanted to get married to Mikael but even then just like any other mashriqi lrki it seemed like she accepted this relationship once she knew that Mikael was the person she was supposed to spend the rest of her life with.

Mannu was not rebellious after her wedding but her reaction to Mikael’s twisted personality was actually very compromising. All the interactions throughout tonight’s episode between Mikael and Mannu went to show that she was more than willing to accept this new role as Mikael’s wife. Even when Mikael gave her the option to walk out of this relationship if she had a problem with his lifestyle, she made it clear that it was not an option. This sudden change in Mannu’s personality was somewhat unbelievable. The only reason for this change of personality could be that Mannu has finally accepted the fact that things don’t always turn up the way people plan them. Mannu kept on thinking about Salahuddin but her focus was definitely her marriage. The phone call to Salahuddin seemed more like something someone would do only because they were lonely. Salahuddin has decided to move on, he does not want to talk about Mannu and he most definitely does not want to talk to her.

mm

Mikael’s character as a whole has nothing new to offer. We have seen many such men before in other dramas too who look perfect as suitors but have a secret life and an indifferent attitude towards their wives. He reminded me of Sarmad’s character in Rubaru. The viewers were given the impression that Mikael wanted to get married to Mannu because he liked her but tonight’s episode clearly showed that he never wanted to get married, there is no room for a wife in his life. Mannu is a complete misfit in her new house. Mannu’s mother in law is nice enough to understand her situation and she wants to see her happy but the fact that she refused to take her to the party with her went to show that she too wasn’t very eager to show her new bahu off!

mm1

Salahuddin is a seedha sadha Hyderabad ka lrka who has no idea how people and life in ‘Karachi’ is like! His so-called friend (Vasay Chaudhry) is only using him and his wife Kuki (Arjuman Rahim) is very bossy and unreasonable! Iffy has very little control over his wife or what happens in the house therefore Kuki runs the show the way she wants. Jamil, the servant is more important to Kuki then anyone else therefore she cannot afford to lose him! I must say that I could totally relate to her character because there are many madams like Kuki who cannot do without a servant and will do anything to accommodate these servants. The servants also know that they can manipulate this situation to their advantage and they make the most of it. The personalities of both these characters were introduced in a way that the viewers clearly understood what their relationships and personality traits were like.

mm2

I would give full marks to the director once again for directing every scene of this episode in a flawless manner. Vasay Chaudhry was spot on as the husband who has no say and a businessman who only cares about his business. The first meeting between Salahuddin and Iffy was directed really well, the viewers could tell instantly that Salahuddin wasn’t going to get a very nice welcome in that house. Maya Ali made me feel for her character every step of the way today and I felt for Salahuddin just as much too. It felt like both these people did not belong in ‘Karachi’!! Saba Hameed has been absolutely brilliant as Mannu’s mother and I have to say that I loved her acting in tonight’s episode although she only had a few dialogues. Gohar Rasheed has a unique style of acting and personally I really like it but I do feel that his role has been-there-done-that written all over it. It would have been good if there was a brief scene of Mannu’s family in tonight’s episode since everything seemed very new with all these people out of the picture.

The preview of the next episode showed that even after Mannu’s attempts to win over her husband, he will still not approve of her. Salahuddin will see the ‘new’ Mannu but he will probably decide to stay out of her life.

Tere Mere Beech – Episode 14!

Ohkay so, this episode of Tere Mere Beech was strictly ohkay & I have my reasons to feel that way which I surely will discuss. I so hope that they take the story forward a tad bit faster because it is getting a bit slow & I wish to see some shorter scenes because they affect the pace of the episode a lot too.

Hareem got a clear cut answer by Qadeer that he will not allow her to even think on those lines that she is entitled to some sort of property. Fahad got an answer too & then he understood that Hareem told him a half-baked truth. It didn’t take Fahad a minute to change his attitude towards Hareem & her whole family & now he wants to put Hareem’s love through some more tests because he knows that she loves him so much that she’ll do everything for him.

Honestly speaking, Nadia & Ali got a little too much coverage than required in this episode. One thing that bothers me so much is the lack of topics that they both are suffering from. Their day starts with the discussions about Hareem & ends with her mention too. Also, the very first conversation they had about Hareem was so long & boring that it made me snooze. I really think Nadia & Ali do not have any contribution in the story & they are just the fillers but the coverage they get is a little too much. Nighat dwelled in the self-pity a little more & her reactions while conversing with Zahida were so OTT too when she found out about the things Hareem have said & done in her village.

I must say, I was enjoying the character of cunning Fahad but what I didn’t enjoy at all were the abuses he directed at Hareem. The writer did the right thing by showing him as a con but she surely could’ve cut down on the verbal abuse that Fahad is putting Hareem up with. The way he spoke to her was so demeaning & I didn’t think it was necessary at all.

Fahad told Hareem to demand her share of inheritance from Nighat now that he understood that he lost a chance in front of Qadeer. Honestly speaking, all the things that Hareem said to Nighat were technically right because Nighat didn’t spend anything on Hareem all her life, so yes, she is entitled to have something at least. I am not saying that she is supposed to get her share because Fahad has asked her to but on her own, she surely deserves as much as Nighat has spent on Nadia & Sadia. Nighat called Nadia & all the things she told her once again made it clear that now she was more worried about Sadia in stead of Hareem. She didn’t want anything happening to Sadia at all, which shows that she loves her more & she is an unjust mother. I found it weird that she called Nadia yet she didn’t want her to be worried. Also, the way she now shared her inhibitions was odd too because all this needed to be done before saying yes to Hareem & Fahad’s marriage. Nighat needs to blame Nadia before anyone else & Nadia needs to blame herself too because they pushed Hareem into this marriage because Nadia grew insecure of Asad’s interest in Hareem.

Overall, this episode was more like a filler & I am hoping that they give us some more twists & turns in the episodes to come. Also, does anyone know where Nadia’s MIL & Asad have gone? Nadia while speaking to Ali held Hareem responsible for lying to Fahad whereas she herself forgot that her mother lied to Ali’s mother too about Hareem also being Nadia’s sister. I really think the characters that are being shown in a positive light by the writer are full of flaws. Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Tere Mere Beech.

Aabro – Episode 11!

Ohkay so, this episode of Aabro was typical & cringe-worthy to say the least, however there were a few bits & bobs that I liked. I really think they need to show some change in the attitude of Ali’s family too because they are being a bit too rigid & unreasonable & it is getting hard to tolerate them.

I really liked the things Ali’s friend said to him. He seemed like a true friend who knew what Ali was going through & the things his wife must be facing because of his family. The way he advised Ali to maintain a healthy relation with Aabro was perfect & was refreshing to hear. Also, I am glad that Abid thought it was a high time he needed to do some talking with his mother about how she should & she must forgive Ali & Aabro, now that they are living under the same roof.

Ali found a job & so did Abid & then, the most cringe-worthy phenomenon took place where Zubaida held both Fauzia & Aabro responsible for their husband’s jobs. This whole ‘larki ki kismat ka paisa’ is so outdated & no one thinks like that, also there’s no evidence to support this argument too, so the writer really needs to upgrade the way she thinks. Yes, I do agree with Zubaida where she held Ali responsible for hurting his parents & therefore facing the brunt of it but she was completely wrong where she put the blame on Aabro solely.

Shahida is actually getting out of control. She now demands Abid to move out because she doesn’t want Fauzia to face Aabro. She is a control freak who is going to make it very difficult for Fauzia & Abid to make their own decisions. I liked the way Abid reasoned with her, I think of all the characters, Abid’s character is good because he knows how to maintain a balance & also serves as a binding force. Shahida didn’t seem too convinced that is why she asked her husband to built Fauzia a home where she can live with her husband happily ever after, which again was so unreasonable.

I found it ridiculous that even after Ali’s friend told him to take care of his wife, Ali continued to be harsh on Aabro. He doesn’t trust her anymore, he doesn’t want her to step out of the house to earn money & also he doesn’t want to get in contact with Aabro’s mother. I really don’t understand what makes Ali think that Aabro is the culprit & he has a right to judge her character? Also, I hated seeing him having a hot meal at the dinning table, where Aabro had to put the food back because Ali’s nasty sister threw a tantrum at her. Both Ali’s sisters lack basic humanity & I think they’re doing a commendable job in following the footsteps of their mother & not to forget the lack of acting in them makes them stick out like a sore thumb too!

The preview of the next episode showed that things are going to get more difficult for Ali & Aabro. I don’t understand why Zubaida is still being so unreasonable now that Aabro has apologized to her? Like Abid said, if he doesn’t like her, it doesn’t mean that she has to make things hard for her. She can ignore her presence & stop maligning other’s heart against her too. I think the way the neighbors backbite about Aabro shouldn’t concern Zubaida at all because in all honesty, that is a display of their petty caliber where they can’t get over her. Also, Hamid needs to move on too because it seems ever since Aabro has left Sakina & Hamid have nothing else to talk about & to see Hamid’s hissy fits is burdensome. Also, as much as I was ecstatic to see Fauzia ‘standing’ in the kitchen, which showed that she is capable of walking too, she took me back to square one where she was seen eavesdropping on her parents & frowning over her luck, phewww!!! Anyways, please share your thoughts about this episode of Aabro.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is one of those very few Pakistani filmmakers who have bagged an Oscar not once but twice. Sharmeen Obaid takes her work very seriously and it is because of this dedication that this year once again she won an Oscar for her documentary “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”. This documentary was also recognized by the Prime Minister of Pakistan and he promised to make proper laws against honor killings. Sharmeen Obaid told the reporters that she had worked very hard and for a very long period of time to make this documentary. Sehra Main Safar – An Overview!

Ohkay so, the writing of Sarwat Nazir, direction of Azfar Ali & the production of Momina Duraid; Sehra Main Safar is 10 episodes down & airs at 9PM every Friday on HUM TV. I binge-watched it because of a lot of recommendations & requests for the reviews. I must say, it’s a simple story that has been directed pretty decently & the story-line doesn’t have much loopholes but yes, for me, it is filled with a tad bit of cliches & at this point, after watching 10 episodes, I am not sure what the motive of the writer is & I will speak about it in the later part of this overview.

So, the story is of Iqra (Zarnish Khan) who happens to be a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Farooq (Shehryaar Zaidi & Humera Zaheer) & is their eldest child. Iqra has a younger sister Aasma (Isha Noor) & they both have a great relationship with each other. Iqra is a very domesticated sort of a person who never stepped out of her home, she loves home-making & always believes in helping her family. Like any other girl of her age, Iqra also dreams of getting married & settling down with her partner but life has something else in store for her.

Farooq’s family goes through a financial crisis when his friends tells him to invest his lifelong savings & provision funds in a business owned by his cousin, only to find out later that they will commit a fraud & he will lose all his money. Farooq gets a heart & paralysis attack & that’s when Iqra is forced to wake up & smell the coffee. The same friend of Farooq then suggests that Iqra should do a job in order to help the family, therefore he arranges one for her & she gets a job too. That’s when Iqra is compelled to step outside of her comfort zone & she starts understanding that the world outside the vicinity of her home & imagination is completely opposite & harsh. Farooq also has a sister Fauzia (Lubna Aslam) who has two sons Taimoor & Ayaaz (Ali Kazmi). Taimoor resides in UAE while Ayaaz lives with his mother in Pakistan. Ayaaz is a graduate who hasn’t found his dream job yet, therefore he tutions students to fend for himself. Like always, Ayaaz is interested in Iqra & even though things look easy on the surface, they start getting complicated as their life progresses.

01

Before Farooq’s health problems, Iqra gets a proposal of Kamran who happens to be the brother of her neighborhood friend Shagufta. That is when Fauzia also puts forth a proposal of Ayaaz for Iqra but Farooq & his wife believe that Kamran’s a bit more eligible because he earns 80K a month. Ayaaz speaks to Iqra to confess his feelings to her & finds out about Kamran’s proposal, where Iqra only tells him that her parents are considering Kamran’s proposal & she will do what her parents will choose for her. When Farooq gets admitted to the hospital, Ayaaz goes out of the way to help their family & then Farooq & his wife get convinced that Ayaaz is better off than Kamran because his sister Shagufta didn’t even bother contacting them in this hour of need. In the meanwhile, Iqra starts her job & then Shagufta shows up only to tell that she was hesitant because of what their family was going through.

Iqra takes the responsibility of her family & that’s where her mother starts getting a bit too comfortable with Iqra’s earnings. Farooq always shows appreciation for what Iqra has done for their family but her mother at times seems concerned but at times thinks Iqra isn’t doing something that no one has done before. Shagufta once again approaches them but this time for Aasma because according to her, Kamran doesn’t like working women. Iqra’s mother accepts the proposal & convinces Iqra to help them even more by giving her a false hope of getting her married to Ayaaz the moment he finds a job. That’s when Iqra is reminded of what Shazia; her colleague always used to tell her that there will come a time when her family will grow indifferent to her feelings & she will be only needed when they’ll be in need of her salary.

This spin of life takes a toll on Iqra & from the one who loves her family to bits, she turns into someone who can’t relate to them anymore as all she notices is how they use her hard-earned money for their own needs & wants. Iqra tries hard to keep herself grounded & reminds herself not to misunderstand her family but Aasma’s wedding hits the nail in the coffin & she changes completely. That’s the point in her life when the entry of Shehryaar Ahmed (Emaan Irfani) as her co-worker starts affecting her. Shehryaar goes out of the way to let her know that she is needed in his life & that’s when Iqra decides to get married to him in stead of Ayaaz. Things are going to get even more difficult for her now, so let’s see what’s in store for her.

02

Honestly speaking, I enjoyed watching Sehra Main Safar till the 8th episode because after that the writer started introducing the cliches that highlighted the negatives of a working women in general. I was time & again reminded of Fareeda’s character from Digest Writer where she dedicated her whole life to her family & then her in-laws. Digest Writer showed a more balanced approach of the writer there but in this drama, looks like the writer is trying to punish Iqra because now she will go by her wish & get married to Shehryaar, that too after she has dedicated years to help her family in the darkest of times. Also, by highlighting the transition in Iqra’s attitude & personality, it looks like the writer is turning her into an example of how a working women shouldn’t be, which I find a little questionable. Iqra got pressurized almost to the point of choking by her mother every single time she chose to do something out of her free will, also, even though Iqra’s mother was thankful to Iqra but she started expecting a little too much from her & that thing had no stop, so I don’t think there’s a reason to show Iqra in a negative light. Also, it was her parents who who pushed her out to face the practical world, so if that has taken toll on her personality, her mother shouldn’t find it hard to cope with it. Even though I do believe it is a good drama but I do not endorse the writer’s approach here about working women that all the girls who step out to make a living are too head-strong & only do as they please.

Anyhow, I must say Zarnish Khan is immensely talented, the way she has brought variations in her dialogue delivery & her tone in different situations is commendable. She sounds authoritative in the office when she needs to be, then she sounds defeated when she shares her feelings with her friend. I really am enjoying watching her on-screen & she really has carried this drama on her shoulders. The rest of the cast has really done a wonderful job too except Emaad Irfani because his dialogue delivery is a bit too flat & he sounds robotic, however I must say I am impressed by the actress playing the character of Shazia, it seems that acting comes naturally to her. I think the director really has stayed true to his seat by getting the best acting out of all these actors. There are no flaws in the direction whatsoever & that is why, I take it as a good watch. I think this drama is better for binge-watching because now when I think of it, the pace is a tad bit on the slower side. I didn’t feel it that much because I covered 10 episodes in 2-3 days, but now when I’d have to wait for it every single week, I do believe it is going to get a bit too slow for my liking. So, those of you who want to watch it, wait for a few weeks & watch all the episodes together after it ends. Please share your thoughts about the first half of Sehra Main Safar.

Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

Nauman Ijaz With His Family – Pictures

Nauman Ijaz’s acting skills are remarkable. He has been associated with the drama industry for a very long time and in this time he has given some superb performances because of which he has a massive fan following. Nauman Ijaz is one of those actors who do not give a lot of interview. Even in this day and age when every other actor will do anything to promote his dramas and celebrities are seen on every other Morning Show Nauman Ijaz is hardly seen in these or any talk shows at all. Nauman Ijaz also keeps his wife away from limelight unlike many other actors whose wives are seen in public supporting them all the time. There are times when Nauman Ijaz’s pictures with his family are seen on the internet usually when they attend wedding functions we see these pictures.

Nauman Ijaz disappeared from dramas when he took up hosting of Mazaq Raat but the viewers are getting to see him in dramas again now that he has left hosting. In a recent interview Nauman Ijaz said that he studied to be a lawyer but due to financial pressure he had to venture into the showbiz industry. He said,

“Luckily I got the opportunities and I availed them so I left law. I always wanted to be a newscaster then. When there used to be only one channel PTV then the 9pm newscaster was the hero, people believed everything that person said. But when I went for an audition, I was rejected for the post of a newscaster.”

Nauman Ijaz also confessed that he had a crush on Samina Peerzada the first time he saw her in reality. He said that when he had to get married, he was not accepted by his in laws because he was an actor. He worked for a few months only so he would get the proposal. He said,

“I have 3 beautiful kids, God is very kind. I always had a lot of faith in Allah. I liked Rabia (my wife) the first time I saw her in Kinnaird College, she was very simple and when I got to know her better I realized she was wife material.”

Here are some beautiful pictures of Nauman Ijaz with his wife and children from different years, some recent and some old.
