Virat Kohli Supports Shahid Afridi Foundation

There has always been a lot of military and political tension between India and Pakistan. However, artists and sportsmen and celebrities of both country meet internationally and are bound by the same feelings of companionship and respect as they would if there was no conflict between the two countries.

This time it was Virat Kohli who supported Shahid Afridi Foundation, abbreviated as SAF in Newcastle for a fundraising event. His autographed bat was auctioned to help raise money for the foundation. The aim of this event was to raise enough funds for building a hospital in Tharparkar, as an ongoing effort to bring #HopeNotOut in the life of people from such poverty stricken areas of the country.

Shahid Afridi was very appreciative of this gesture by Virat Kohli on twitter and received an equally warm reply.

This is what Afridi had to say;

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

The number of Pakistani dramas and those starring in them have exceeded so much in all these years that they are exploring a lot of different genres and themes to build the plots around. Love stories, however, still remain the most common and most liked form of entertainment especially n our part of the world. We have our heritage surrounding the sagas of Heer Ranjha and Sohni Mahiwal. Having conservative mindset amongst our forefathers, love was always met with scorn and often led to doom and gloom for the lovers. These tales have now taken a modern twist and its often not the elders who are the troublemakers anymore, but a number of other factors are involved now. One thing remains constant though, which is that true love is met with a lot of tears and blood and sweat before the happily ever after is achieved.

The expression of highly charged emotions is often easier for women, in real as well as reel life. When it comes to men, there are very few who can can nail such scenes to perfection and who can express their emotions and feelings of love, loss and fear naturally, but we certainly do have a good few of those very talented stars who can make you ride the wave of emotions with them.

Here is a list of these men who have made you laugh and cry and feel the story with them with their impeccable dialogue delivery and faultless execution of romantic stories. These lover boys and romantic heroes are leading the race when it comes to acting out these ethereal tales.

Humayun Saeed has been giving unmatched performances in romantic scenes for many years now. From Mehndi to Ishq Junoon Deewangi to Doraha to Bin Roye and now Dillagi, he has been giving such powerful  and memorable scenes. His typical loving expression and heavy voice makes the veteran actor shine whenever he is expressing his love on screen.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Imran Abbas; This young man has been nailing romantic plays since Dil e Muztar and even before that. He can express pain, longing and adoration very openly and naturally. Some of his touching performances have come through Mera Naam Yousuf Hai, Tum Kon Piya and Yaar e Bewafa. He delivers such diaogues with a lot of warmth and vulnerability.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Sami Khan; He is almost exclusively a romantic hero and one who has frequently lost the love of his life or has to move mountains to get through to her. He has always been appreciated in those roles and hence, he keeps doing more of them and emotes each one with a lot of skill and sensitivity.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Bilal Abbas Khan; This twenty five year old is the newest among all those mentioned and surprisingly is at par with all of them. His looks are certainly a contributing factor in his rising popularity but so is his talent in acting. He has only performed passionate lover boy roles till now, from Dumpukht to Rasm e Duniya and now in O Rangreza and he is absolutely flawless in communicating to you the love and pain of whatever character he is in.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Fawad Khan; Fawad is very popular for a number of reasons in showbiz, but Pakistani dramas have been his stepping stones to this fame, even though he is quite selective in doing them. From the stylishly rich Ashar of Humasafar to the boyish Zaroon Junaid of Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Fawad manages to do justice to his part of the love story, and expresses it to perfection.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Shehryar Munawar; From the tortuous journey of Kahi Unkahi in the name of love to the sadness of Asmanon Pay Likha, Shehryar as been very good in delivering romantic dialogues with feeling. He has a boyish charm which serves him very well in such scenes and make them look effortless.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Hamza Ali Abbasi; He does not do a lot of dramas but he does carry the character of a lover in a deep, poetic kind of manner which suits him brilliantly. From Pyarey Afzal to Mann Mayal, Hamza does love stories which are unusual but somehow manages to emote them brilliantly.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

Adnan Malik; This multi talented hero always has a number of projects other than acting under his belt including photography and documentary making. Still, he was excellent in Sadqay Tumhare as the angry lover who was wronged and had to lose his lady love due to old scores which were not any of his fault. He was much appreciated in executing the heavy diaolgues of Khalil ur Rehman Qamar with ease.

The Lover Boys Of Pakistani Dramas

This is not to say there are not a lot of other actors who are performing wonderfully these days, but it was about those who received acknowledgement and appreciation for being romantic heroes and nailed the forlorn lover boy roles perfectly, even if they lack somewhat when performing as a different character.

Zakham Episode 17 Review – Still Clueless

This episode was full of more zakhams with no marham in sight and ofcourse the nasoor Khalida is still here, still as spiteful and still as selfish.

The play revolved around Takbeer’s meeting with Mehwish and their patchup with Musa’s family which I dare hope will lead to the desired outcome, and ofcourse Takbeer’s father’s death. There was such sadness in today’s episode. First around Takbeer’s vulnerable happiness which Madiha Imam is nailing perfectly. She is portraying every emotion flawlessly as the abused wife who does not know whether she should feel relieved of getting rid of an abusive husband or wait and hope for his return dutifully. The confusion, the sadness, the defeat of fate is etched out in every expression.

Her meeting with Mehwish was also executed nicely. Even though it might seem odd on the surface that she told Mehwish every tragedy of her marital life while standing outside a shop but the relationship that they had shared makes it feel quite normal. She was her best friend so she wasted no time in doing small talk after so many years.

The highlight, however, was Takbeer’s meeting with Khalida. I don’t understand what is Khalida’s agenda. I can understand she is jealous that her brother is lost and Takbeer is all hale and hearty but why she called Takbeer’s father to tell it all, which lead to his demise is quite perplexing, and why was she so indifferent to Fatima, since she is the only one of her brother’s flesh and blood and she can make her feel the most connected to him.

The aftermath of death was shown very realistically on screen. Their were too many tears today but surprisingly they did not seem fake or forced.

On the other hand, Mehwish, Farhan and I’m sure Musa is also having twinges that what could have been is being given a second chance. It is too much for Musa to vocalise his hopes yet but he will get there very soon, hopefully.

The story is quite unclear even till now and no assumption can be made as to where are the writer is leading us. So, the review is again ending on the same note that hopefully next episode will be more clearer.

P.S. I really wish talking on the phone when driving would not be shown as a norm in our dramas.

Yakeen Ka Safar Episode 16 – A Decent Episode!

Ohkay so, I am glad that things moved forward in this episode especially in Zubiya’s life, but I really am looking forward to how & when she will independently get to shape up her life where there will be no one bringing up her past again & again, but then I am not sure if that is ever going to happen considering when she will meet Asfand, as even he will be a reminiscent of the darkness that once came in her life & the fact that he was a witness himself might make things difficult for Zubiya, but I have a feeling he might not judge her, now when he will see that Zubiya has become a doctor & carries herself with dignity & decency!

Abbi finally got a chance to apologize to Zubiya & voice his concerns. All this while Abbi actually did show that he was worried for his only daughter because he could see how Rehan mistreated her all this while, so just the thought of him not being around terrified him. Abbi did want Zubiya to settle down so that he could feel at peace knowing that someone was going to take care of her but sadly before that could happen, he passed away. The way Zubiya looked at Abbi’s things after his death was one of the most heart-touching & emotional scenes of this entire drama, it’s like you are trying to connect to the one you just lost through the things that they left behind. Touching his tasbeeh & then his shawl made Zubiya feel that he was still around!

As usual, Sheema tried to steer Rehan’s thoughts in the direction that he didn’t even consider – getting Zubiya’s jewelery for her husband’s business was the best Sheema could think of & not only that, her tone suddenly changed. Well, the entire scene where she badmouthed about Zubiya in front of her cousin was in line with her character since she isn’t tired of speaking about Zubiya’s past & it was amusing how her cousin thought harassing Zubiya was a good idea that too when her brother was around. As always, Rehan chose not to believe his sister because all these years, Sheema has really maligned his heart & mind against her that’s why he thought Zubiya must’ve been at fault. Sajal Ali deserves an award for this particular scene as she was exceptional. Zubiya finally voiced the truth & that too in such a way that left Rehan speechless because Rehan didn’t have any answers to her questions. Rehan finally got a reality-check that he wasn’t allowed to display his ghiarat in the matters concerning Zubiya because he didn’t take a stand for his mother against his father when he killed her as he knew he will lose everything! Sheema sent Zubiya away & then blamed it all on Zubiya. Even though I was sad for Zubiya & I actually thought where’s she going to go, I was relieved that we won’t be getting to see Sheema & Rehan anymore!

I actually didn’t think that Zubiya will go to Mahjabeen’s house & that came as a pleasant surprise. It is good that Zubiya finally decided to move on & is now going to take care of herself on her own. So, Asfand is back & he has partnered with Dr. Shehroz to open up the hospital in his father’s hometown. They have started working & are now looking for a team of doctors to run the hospital. I am sure that’s where Zubiya will show up because as the preview suggested, she will be judged by Mohsin’s wife too & she will have to leave. I actually rolled my eyes really hard when I saw this scene in the precap, like it’s given that Zubiya will leave & pursue the job in Asfand’s hospital, so I am not sure if this entire blame game was necessary where Mohsin’s wife will accuse her of being involved with him? Seriously, they have shown us enough of how Zubiya’s past has haunted her all this while, so I feel there is no need of showing it in this phase of her life as she has left everything behind. Zubiya is going to go anyways so they could’ve shown that she left her Khala’s house on a positive note, not because of some insecure woman who couldn’t stop herself from making assumptions & then accusing Zubiya for something so pathetic!

I wish they had given some proper dialogues to Shamil Khan when he was talking to the Police Commissioner, his stuttering actually showed that he was struggling really hard. Also, I am not sure who has told the female actors that they need hair extensions in every other scene, like Beenish Raja’s extension selection was worse but what’s worst was them being all over the place during those fight scenes! Also, yes, even though after that scene, a wife was trying to calm her cry-baby husband down, there was too much physical contact that happened for my liking! Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yakeen Ka Safar.

Caution !! Mental Illness Alert !!

0

This article is prompted by the recent trend of raising social, moral and ethical issues of the society and to enlighten masses about dealing with things that are beyond human control, like giving birth to only daughters or disabled kids or intersex babies and having a psychological disorder. While it is a tremendous step ahead of the saas bahu sagas and one man two woman stories, these issues without proper caution and thorough professional research might do more harm than good to the society.

The problem with our dramas is that we are showing problems without solutions, and even the problems are magnified. Characters with mental diseases are the villains in these dramas which is exactly contrary to the message that needs to be sent out.

In Sanam, for example, Ayla was a loathsome character who supposedly had schizophrenia. Even though she was instituialised at the end and her ex husband did show some regret that about not understanding her, for the most part, she was the vamp. There was no mention of the fact that mental institutions are not the only place for such people. Rather, with proper medication, they can really be useful members of the society. She was shown to be scheming, plotting and cunningly destroying lives, while in reality schizophrenics are more of a threat to themselves than anyone else around them. The tricks she played on Harib and Aan were just the scenes of a villainess and nothing to do with schizophrenia. The drama stigmatised mental illness more than the increase in acceptance of such people as was the intention.

Another issue that is being raised is domestic abuse by husbands who are mentally unfit to be able to handle the responsibilities of a married life. That is a very valid point but again does not do full justice to the concept. In Rasm e Duniya, one of the two main leads Harib is also shown to be mentally disturbed as a result of childhood neglect and abuse he suffered at the hands of his step mother. The portrayal of the character is very realistic but he himself is a psychiatrist and neither he nor his colleagues or his family or his wife is able to see that he is mentally disturbed and got him any help, and he keeps on putting a good face in front of everyone except his wife. These are again the traits of an intentionally abusive husband. He even shoots himself and there is no mention of getting him treated, and who will bear the brunt of this? Definitely his wife as his illness will only surface behind closed doors. That scares you of such people rather than generating acceptance.

In Zakham, Faisal Quraishi is also playing such a character. He again manages to put you off of schizophrenics or bipolar disorder or whatever it is that he has. He is scheming and two faced and knows very well which tactic to apply at which time to oppress his wife while saving face in front of other people. The person closest to him, his sister does nothing to get him help. Rather, she helps him hide his problems. There is no sympathy that comes out for that character Khawar. So, the line between the villain and a psychologically ill person in merged, which is how we already treat them.

It would be unfair not to appreciate the effort being made to bring out newer themes and better concepts and the hard work that goes into executing them. However, issues like psychological disorder need more caution as far as our dramas are concerned. Just like you need to get treated for a physical ailment, you would need proper treatment for a mental illness. Someone with such an issue is neither a villain nor a stigma nor a problem for others. Hopefully, in the near future, our plays would be more consistent in showing the signs of a certain mental disease, as well as give out the message of inclusion and productivity for all such patients, and not relate subjects like domestic violence and plotting ex wives to them. On the other hand, a lot of such people truly are diagnosed after these behaviours which they take to extremes, and in such cases a proper closure with improvement in their lives and those around them would be a great way to bring this topic forward through Tv.

Teri Raza Episode 05 Review – Amusement At Its Peak!

Ohkay so, since I am the reviewer of this play & I have a responsibility on my shoulders, I think it is my duty to help my viewers maintain their sanity & for that I have to hand out a public service message, which is that all the viewers who are planning on tuning to this episode should keep the ear plugs handy because the amount of screaming that happened in this episode can easily deafen them up. I actually have no idea why every single time they show a warning ‘tambaku noshi sehat ke liye muzzar hai’ because if they are so concerned, they should have also flashed the warning ‘cheekhna chilana bhi sehat ke liye muzzar hai’. This episode was ridiculous & all the characters, surprise surprise acted ridiculously too!

Oh well, Rameez actually confused himself as the ‘hero’ & he decided to play that by showing up at Suhana’s doorstep with an intention of winning her over by creating a havoc in her house. Just when I was dreading that the howler in Shaheen Khan would unleash today, she remained a little under control but that role was taken over by Sanam & Shehroz. I was laughing all this while that such a huge drama was going on at the ground floor, on the first floor Dadi was peacefully looking at her Shadi ka Jora, like I am sure they must’ve invested a lot in sound proofing or may be Dadi has hearing issues along with heart issues that she is going to go to surgery for, since that’s the reason why Suhana’s parents are rushing with this marriage!

I actually laugh out loud every time I hear Talat say that she wants to see Suhana happy & in her tiny brain she has assumed that Suhana is going to be happy ‘after’ her marriage with Imtiyaz. I mean how blind can a mother be? When she can clearly see that Suhana’s engagement with Imtiyaz has only been more like an emotional trauma for her so why does she expect things to change in the future? When Imtiyaz is unable to make Suhana happy before marriage, how is he going to make her happy after marriage? I really am done seeing such idiotic mothers in our dramas who the moment their daughters get engaged turn a blind eye & think their problem is solved & now they are going to get rid of the biggest burden of their lives by getting them married. I don’t know if the doctors have told Suhana’s parents & Dadi that they are on life support or what because the way they are rushing with the marriage is so amusing, like they rushed with the engagement & didn’t wait for Rameez’s proposal for weird reasons best known to them & now again, they are rushing with the marriage for the weird reasons best known to them. To be honest, such Dadi’s are such a burden in the dramas where they are only alive to threaten young girls to rush into marriages, because anytime the writer can put a full stop in front of their character & they can bid farewell to the drama world. Suhana’s Dadi has done just exactly that, because before her engagement, she fainted to further push her into it & now when it’s time of her marriage, once again Dadi is ready to take off to the hospital so that Suhana feels threatened!

The focus on Istikhara & Bad Shaghuni is ridiculous. I really want to find something good in this drama considering it is Sanam Baloch’s comeback drama but these concepts that the writer has embedded in this script make me see the flaws only (not that it has anything good in it anyways). If that’s the case then they could’ve shown Suhana going to some Mufti Sahab & asking for a clear cut explanation behind Istikhara logic in stead of just blindly believing on the twisted concept that her Dadi has presented in front of her. Also, now that Suhana has decided that she is going to become a sacrificial lamb in order to protect Rameez & her entire family from Istikhara’s Bad Shaguni then what’s with the forlorn face? Also, it is ridiculous that Rameez hasn’t left a good impression on Suhana, like he has accused her of getting married because of money & now he chose to show up at her doorstep & misbehaved with her mother & still Suhana is acting like a Desperatana, all sad & depressed because she can’t get married to this badtameez bacha? Rameez’s dhamki ‘tum kabhi khush nahi rahogi’ had me in a fit of laughter because aggar aisay badtameez jhootay bachon ki bad-duas qabool hone lag gain to bas phir ho gaya kaam!

Finally, Paa Mmtyaz acted his age & he showed some concerns about Suhana that she has changed & she is not the same anymore but then once again the way he tried to convince Suhana to get married to him quickly showed that he is selfish & not as good as he poses to be. Imtiyaz was like ‘meri age mai logon ki dusri shadi ho rahi hoti hai’, I mean seriously, now is he going to use his AGE as a weapon to pressurize Suhana? Also, if he is so concerned about his age then why didn’t he get married at the right time, why does he expect Suhana to do the heavy-lifting? I find it amusing how every time Imtiyaz says something but does exactly opposite to what he has been making claims about. He said he didn’t want to pressurize Suhana but the moment she said she wants to get married after a year, he went under pressure himself, lol & felt the need to pressurize Suhana. I am not sure if Suhana is trying to buy some time for Rameez to become ‘bara admi’ because that’s what it looked like.

Imtiyaz’s conversation with his mother Sitara was another off-putting scenario, like seriously how long are mothers of the sons in our dramas are going to pamper them into oblivion? Sitara tried to shoo away all the doubts that Imtiyaz had by saying Suhana is dreading the change in her life? Like seriously, why couldn’t Sitara take a good look at her Shehzada Gulfaam/Imtiyaaz & think about the possibility that may be he is not Suhana’s ideal & that’s the reason behind the change in her behavior?

I wish the writer had saved the actors the hassle of saying ‘aap, janab’ because what the parents of Suhana are doing & the way they are treating her contradicts the verbal respect they extend towards her. They don’t respect her, or her freedom or her choices, so I don’t think it would’ve made any difference if in stead of talking to her with so much of tameez o tamaddun, they had just used ‘tum’ to communicate with her!!!

The preview of the next episode was ridiculous too. I find it amusing how in the previews they show the next episode to be so happening but in stead it turns out to be a boring slow saga with bucket of tears being filled every single time. Suhana is going to have the time of her life before her marriage but then what? She is going to get married & stay sad for the rest of her life? LOL! Wow what a story! I had a good laugh at Suhana’s claim that ‘Suhana badal gai hai’, does by badalna she means more sadness & more forlorn faces? I wish someone had told Shehroz that blush-on is meant to be applied on the apples of the cheeks, not on the cheekbones because that’s where the highlighter goes. I wish someone stitches the loose necks of Shehroz’s shirts, they are so cringe-worthy I swear! Also, we get it, Imtiyaz is aged but that doesn’t mean he has to be in his suit even when he is having a casual lunch with his wife-to-be. Share your thoughts about this episode please & don’t forget to keep earplugs handy!

Alif Allah Aur Insaan Episode 15 Review – Absolutely Brilliant!

Ohkay so, another week another brilliant episode of Alif Allah Aur Insaan. I am glad that even after 15 episodes, this drama exceeds our expectations week after week. I really hope it stays the same way because these days, praising Hum TV’s dramas is like giving the producers a ticket to drag the drama further because they think if the viewers are enjoying the story & the characters till this point, they will do too once it is prolonged which is most certainly not the case. I have seen so many dramas that lost the charm but I really wish that doesn’t turn out to be the case with this drama because its strong script & perfect pace are its strength!

Shahzeb had no other choice than to accept his past mistake because firstly he was bewildered that Nazneen could play such a game to embarrass him & secondly he couldn’t believe that he’d be questioned by Malik Hashmat for something which wasn’t truthfully presented in front of him. Shahzeb only said yes & didn’t even try to give out any explanations as he knew that nothing that he’d say would make Malik Hashmat change his mind because his tone was already decisive & he was just asking to further make up his mind. I liked the fact that in such a dark moment, Zaitoon chose to stand by her son as she trusted him. Shahzeb couldn’t believe that Nazneen would use his truthfulness against him, that too in such a way where she would tarnish his reputation. Shahzeb & Baba Jee’s conversation was interesting again as he told him that he shouldn’t bother about what the future holds for him but we’ll have to see what Shahzeb will do because he actually seemed emotionally shattered!

So, Nazneen definitely had a plan & she thought things through all this while. Nazneen already knew that the moment her father will find out the truth about Shahzeb, he’d call off their marriage & she will use that to convince Basit to save the day. I found Qadir’s presence totally convincing because just before their meeting happened, Basit’s mother did inform him that his father was working till morning in the farms. Nazneen knew that if she has to bring Basit into her life, she will have to trick him too. Luckily for Nazneen, Qadir fell for her drama, because if it would’ve been Basit, I am sure he wouldn’t have dared to say a word of such sort but just because Qadir felt that Nazneen was actually worried about her father’s pride & honor, he gave in!

Rani finally became Reena Begum & just when she was enjoying the taste of her new-found success she was forced to face the reality that everything came with a ‘price’ & she’d have to pay it in order to survive. Rani’s display of emotions in front of Shammo did show how Shammo reminded her of her past which obviously had everything to do with her family & that is why she couldn’t hold her tears because she made up her mind that there’s no place for her family in her life anymore, therefore she was trying hard to stay firm. Oh well, Rani understood the price Nigar Begum had to pay every single time in order to attain the wealth that fascinated Rani in the first place. However, I will say that before stepping into the vicinity of the brothel, Rani’s oblivion about the ‘other services’ that Nigar provided to her visitors was convincing but the fact that she was still unaware of this aspect even after staying in the brothel for so many months didn’t seem convincing. Rani was Nigar Begum’s personal servant so for her to not know where would Nigar Begum be & what would she be doing after her performances is a bit hard to believe, also it wasn’t only Nigar Begum, there were so many other courtesans too so it is hard to believe that Rani never heard about it from the rest of the girls. Rani has spent months in the brothel & she stumbled upon so many secrets like Fizza Bai’s death & even met Nawazish Ali by chance so for her to not know that there’s something else that happens in the brothel other than dance performances was unrealistic.

Anyways, Reena finally realized that she made the wrong choice, she finally realized that she lost the bit of respect that she had even as a beggar. Reena understood that the wealth that Nigar had didn’t come easily to her & she had to go to such extremes to earn it. Reena finally understood that all those values & morals that her mother taught her were crushed just after this single encounter that she had with a stranger. The way the mention of next ‘performance’ scared Reena showed that she wasn’t mentally ready for this new journey that she just found out about. We will have to see if she settles for this or takes this as a punishment for wishing something that wasn’t in her reach & if so, will she leave everything or not?

So, Qadir Ali finally put forth the proposal of Basit in front of Malik Hashmat for Nazneen. I don’t know why but I have a feeling that this plan of Nazneen would backfire because no matter what, her parents would never settle for their servant’s son for her. Even though Nazneen has played this game intelligently, she has definitely undermined the fact that her father has the final decision making power. If Nazneen will come forth & share what she wants then may be her father won’t be able to say no to her but if she will play this game silently then there are high chances that this will definitely go against her!

Overall, this episode was phenomenal & I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I must commend the choreographer, the director & also the actors who kept the dance performances perfectly decent. Even though Ushna has showed a perfect transition as a beggar & then as a courtesan, I still feel Sana Fakhar set the bar really high & in this dance sequence, Ushna looked more like a performer. However, I enjoyed her emotional scenes a lot because she really showcased what Rani was going through after realizing what she has done in order to become Reena Begum. Kubra Khan’s performance was good too. I wish we get to see more of Imran Ashraf/Shammo & he plays an important role in Rani’s life. I really wish there’s more to his story than just becoming a famous makeup artist. The preview of the next episode seemed interesting I can’t wait to watch it. Funny Story: While watching Yeh Raha Dil last night on live streaming, I saw this episode’s promo of Alif Allah Aur Insaan & they showed that there was this human being in black dress, white long hair standing next to Rani, I actually assumed that it would be Rani hallucinating about Nigar Begum & she’d see Nigar in such a horrifying avatar & that’ll be Rani’s undoing where she will lose her senses & Nigar Begum would haunt her. I was actually surprised when I saw that scene because I seriously had no idea that it would be a man & I was confusing him as Nigar Begum, lol!

Coke Studio’s House Band’s Experience Working with Strings.

Over the past decade, Coke Studio has definitely made a name for itself. In fact, it has become one of the biggest shows in the sub-continent. A lot of super hit songs have been produced on the show and we are all very thankful to Coke Studio for giving those hits to us. But producing amazing tracks requires not only artists working hard but also the house band of Coke Studio.

In 2013, after five years, Hyatt stepped down from the position of executive producer of Coke Studio and handed her mantle over to the Strings members Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia.

Most of us will agree that these guys produce great music but what we all also want to know is how they are as the bosses? Well, in a recent interview to a local news agency, members of the Coke Studio’s House band answered this question:

They’re both gems! Being a good musician is a whole different thing but they’re incredible human beings.

Haider Ali further praised his bosses,

Most importantly, I’ve been given full liberty to play whatever I want. I’ve worked with so many artists but the moment I joined Strings I knew I could not go anywhere else.

Asif Nicky, another member of the band, said,

I’ve been associated with the entertainment industry for over 15-16 years but have worked with Strings for the past 5-6 years. Working with Strings has been really good.

The experienced musicians also talked about what he finds special working with the Strings boys,

To me, quality in work is a priority and that’s why being associated with Strings is special for me,

The house band this season includes: Aahad Nayani, Kamran Zafar, Babar Khanna, Aziz Kazi, Imran Akhoond, Haider Ali, Omran Shafique, Shahab Hussain, Rachel Viccaji, Natasha Khan, Joshua, Bradley and Adeel.

It seems like Strings are getting a five-star review from the house band. Let’s hope they continue making everyone feel as welcomed and as comfortable that they do now.

Muhammad Amir Answers Rohit Sharma’s Criticisms

Muhammad Amir is a force to be reckoned with, according to most crickets at least. As you all might remember, Rohit Sharma didn’t share the same thoughts about our young bowler. In fact, in an interview in the past, the Indian Cricketer had said “Mohammad Amir ‘is just a normal bowler’ ” and there’s nothing special about him or his bowling.

There were his exact words,

There is just so much hype around him, I don’t think it is right to give him too much hype after one match”

“He is just a normal bowler, on that given day if he is good, he is good. It is not as if he turns up and blows everyone away. Stop talking about him already.

When our ace bowler was asked about Mr.Sharma, this is what he had to say,

Maybe his opinion about me has now changed. But let’s get one thing clear, I would never call him an ordinary batsman.

In fact, I would call him an extraordinary batsman. His record for India is superb and I respect him.

HIs response melted our hearts! Well down, Amir!

Pakistan and Afghanistan Join Hands to Produce Documentary about Human Rights

Pakistan and Afghanistan may have several political issues forming a divide between their ‘brotherhood’ but just like other countries, the artists of both the countries act as a means of bridge of prosperity between the neighbours.

On Friday, 28 July 2017, a documentary focusing on human rights issues was presented at the Centre for Excellence in Journalism in Karachi. It contained audio and video works by both Pakistanis and Afghanis. The Pakistani and Afghani makers seemed to have really hard on their masterpiece.

These documentaries were produced in a first-of-its-kind residential training programme that brought together documentary makers from Pakistan and Afghanistan in Karachi from 17-28 July 2017. The training was led by award-winning journalists from Serbia, Sonja Ristic and Zoran Ćulafić.

In an interview shared by Pakistan Today, Mohammad Behroozian from Afghanistan said,

Bringing different people together is always a fascinating idea. You get different perspectives, skill sets and different ways of thinking.

Talking about the benefits of Pakistan and Afghanistan working together he said,

It is even more important when the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan come together. The people-to-people diplomacy will, hopefully, result in better relations between the people of the two countries.

From Pakistani side, Saed Nazir said,

here is a wide gap between the journalists of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Such types of training definitely help build better understanding among professionals and improve the prospects of peace, because these people have the power to build public opinion.

This film ‘Sound is Silence’ revolves around a 15-year-old girl Fariah, who was born hearing impaired. Following this girl’s story the film brings into light the struggles a deaf person has to face living in Karachi. It further explores how this disability brings different obstacles in their way of success. This heart touching and eye opening film is made by Nameera Ahmad from Pakistan with 2 fellows from Afghanistan.

Radio journalist Saed Nazir from Pakistan produced an audio documentary tapping into a somewhat taboo topic in our country; transgenders and their struggles to survive in Pakistan as well as the hindrances they face to enter into the mainstream professions and maintain their positions.

Ghairat Episode 2 Review – Engrossing

This episode of Ghairat covered all the developments flawlessly and I definitely liked it more than the first episode. I feel that this entire episode however could have been far more impactful if the promos of the drama did not reveal so much. Viewers (like me) who had already watched the promos knew that Iqra’s character would end up like this therefore there was no surprise factor at all. For instance when Usman pretended he had forgiven Iqra, I wasn’t wondering what his next move was going to be. Overall, the situation leading to Iqra’s decision and Usman’s actions were covered convincingly. Some of the dialogues in tonight’s episode however sounded too artificial perhaps because of the way they were delivered. Sundas Tariq was phenomenal in the scenes in which she had no dialogues because her expressions and body language was faultless but her dialogue delivery in tonight’s episode especially when she tells Saba to change her outlook towards life was disappointing. Iqra Aziz and Muneeb Butt on the other hand have been performing surprisingly well throughout. Both of them are likeable in their respective roles and look good together too.

Ghairat Episode 2 Review - Engrossing

This episode opened with Shagufta telling Saba’s mother that her brother had spotted her with Zohaib. This particular situation was handled in a wise manner by her mother and as a result of that Saba had reason to hope that it won’t be that difficult to get married to Zohaib after all. The entire situation changed drastically when Iqra decided to elope with Junaid. This part of the story was shown brilliantly and it was covered quickly. The fact that Iqra was killed after she entered into nikkah with Junaid gives him the right to file a case against her murderers. Also, Junaid’s SHO friend is not going to let Usman get away with this easily. I feel that ultimately Usman’s mother will forgive him and that is how he will be released. While talking to her friend, Iqra mentioned that her phupo too had been killed which basically goes to show that what happened to Iqra wasn’t happening for the first time in the family. I also liked how the mother’s reaction to this entire situation was covered. It was good to see that the writer did not make the mother an accomplice to the murder. She tried to stop Usman but she was dragged away. She has been shown as someone who does not have a lot of influence in the house but at the same time it was hard to believe that she could not predict what Usman was going to do to her daughter and tried a little harder especially since this wasn’t the first murder in the family. Overall however it was much better than showing that the mother supported Usman and did not try to stop him.

Ghairat Episode 2 Review - Engrossing

The contrast between Zohaib’s family and that of Saba’s was once again very obvious in this episode as well. Zohaib’s character has been translated on screen in a fine manner by Muneeb Butt. Zohaib can give Saba the kind of life every girl deserves but it is not going to be easy because Shagufta will probably want Saba to get married to her brother. Saman Ansari is continuously seen playing characters which are completely different from each other and she excels in each one of these roles; I truly appreciate her versatility.

The last scene of tonight’s episode was directed really well which is why it was also very disturbing. It made you question the sanity of all such brothers out there who kill their sisters to save their so-called “honour”!

This episode of Ghairat was fast-paced and had a lot of important developments to its credit. I am looking forward to the next episode and most importantly want to see how this entire incident has effected Saba.

How many of you watched this latest installment? Do share your thoughts about it.

Yeh Raha Dil Episode 24 Review – Agony Aunt In Action!

Ohkay so, let me get this out of the way first, I am sure this episode would’ve worked for a lot of viewers but sadly it didn’t work for me. The only good thing that I saw in this episode was a development in Nida’s character which was again long due, so I am glad things finally moved in that direction where her character went through an emotional transition but that’s where it all stopped for me because I didn’t enjoy Zaki & Hayat’s scenes nor their behavior!

So, Tabrez only tried to exploit Nida as he knew that she is emotionally weak, so he thought he would once again use her to make himself feel better. Tabrez’s ego didn’t allow him to accept that Nida was finally moving on in her life & that is why even after breaking up with her, he was tailing her because of which he knew that she was getting married. Tabrez himself is a weak man who by making the most of others’ weaknesses feels good about himself. Nida actually got scared & thought may be she had left something with Tabrez that he was trying to use against her.

It was good to see Hayat trying to comfort Nida but that’s where her character stopped making sense for me in this episode. All her lectures to Zaki & her overly portrayed concerns for Nida were off-putting, to the point where I started seeing Hayat as an Agony Aunt. For the first time it looked like Hayat was arguing for the sake of it, only to test Zaki further to see if he will actually stand by his word & will protect Nida. Again, seeing Hayat taking the ‘credit’ for lecturing Zaki on dignity was off-putting. Hayat needs to sort her own mess before trying to fix others’ problems as it looks like Hayat really is interested in others’ lives more than she is in hers & that makes her look lifeless & aimless at times. Yes, to be honest, in the beginning it was good to see Hayat being this strong, level headed, independent sort of a girl who wasn’t weak but now seeing all that she has been doing from last so many episodes, that thing is making her look annoying rather than interesting. For me, in this episode, Hayat came out as an Agony Aunt who had a hard time minding her own business. Yes, Hayat wanted to protect her sister Nida but then seeing everything that she directed at Zaki was uncalled for & then the way she tried to argue with him a bit more to get back at him really made it look like she was trying to pick a fight & when Zaki wasn’t giving her that chance, she was getting agitated!

It was good that Zaki took a stand for Nida & told Tabrez that nothing that he’d say or do will make Zaki change his mind. Tabrez, like I said being a weak man only needed this dose to know that Nida was not alone & that’s why he lost the confidence he had when he threatened Nida. To be honest, I didn’t feel a thing for Hayat when she was standing there shedding tears on her ‘majboori’ where she is backing out of her love to give Nida the love of her life, sorry, she has done this to herself so no sympathies there!!!

Now, coming over to the good thing about this episode, it was Nida’s realization. Finally, Nida was tired of playing games, she was tried of manipulating people, she was tired of exploiting Zaki & she was tired of doing everything that she has done till date, that is why even when Jimmy tried to show her the brighter side of the picture that things will sort out after her marriage, Nida didn’t seem thrilled by the idea as she could finally see that everything was wrong. She has really played games with Zaki, Hayat & has also involved her mother to achieve her goal, so now when everything was under control, she could see that she wasn’t at peace as her conscience was making her realize that she was wrong all this while & she won’t be able to have that happiness that she dreams of while having so many burdens on her heart & mind.

Overall, this episode was just alright. I enjoyed a few light-hearted conversations that Affaq, Haroon, Azra & then Azra & Zaki had. Anum Goher’s dressing (except that white kurta near the pool) in this episode was hideous, I guess she forgot that she was playing the character of a fashion model in this drama. Yes, Nida’s character was going through a transition but that shouldn’t have affected her dressing in such a bad manner. Yumna Zaidi’s bright blue shirt was nice & it suited her complexion, probably one of those very few dresses in Hayat’s collection that were good! Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yeh Raha Dil.

Cheers,

He’s truly awesome.”

Cutest Baby Competition At “Salam Zindagi” Ends Today

Recently our morning shows have started coming up with some very strange ideas . There have been shows like recreating the bridal look to finding the cutest baby among the participating toddlers .

Finding the cutest baby does not seem like a really good idea in the first place but in all fairness they did happen to consider the feelings of the parents and the kids involved to some extent by repeating that it’s hard to choose from them. During the first two shows  there were just eliminations . In the last show, however the present or the award was given to all the kids who were finalists. I don’t know if  that was because the producers had decided so in the first instance or it was because of Nadeem Jafri as he was very insistent that he has been called to judge so he does not want to see any baby left out without the present.

Apart from the conceptual the differences that some people might have with finding one baby who has to act and look the cutest, the program was very interesting to watch. The kids had  stimulating activities and judges  of the first episode, Sara Kashif and Khushi Maheen were very cute.

If you are a child lover and enjoy the antics that toddlers and preschoolers can produce when in the mood, then you must watch the recording of this program. You will not be disappointed as there were some very cute babies and very loving parents and very  funny hosts and judges in Salam Zindagi in these three episodes, aired on the 28th, 29th and 31st of July. It is something you can enjoy if you want to watch a common Tv show with your kids.

One thing that really stood out in today’s episode, on the last day of competition was Faysal Quraishi’s dressing.

Pepsi Battle Of The Bands Episode 1 Review- Dull Judgement!

0

The much hyped comeback of Pepsi Battle of the Bands is finally here. It is the second season of the show with the first being aired in 2002; more than a decade ago. The contestants of the season one are now the judges. The judges panel will include Fawad Khan, Meesha Shafi, Atif Aslam, Farooq Ahmed and Shahi Hassan. The show is hosted by Ayesha Omer.

Pepsi Battle Of The Bands Episode 1 Review- Dull Judgement!

Working Of The Show:

The show is currently in audition phase. The judges will first listen to all the participants and will short-list the ones they like. The short-listed ones then once again will battle to reach the final round. At the end only six bands will compete to win the battle of bands in the finale.

Judges and Hosting:

Pepsi Battle Of The Bands Episode 1 Review- Dull Judgement!

The first episode had Fawad Khan, Meesha Shafi and Farooq Ahmed (lead vocalist of Aaroh) in the judges seats. Though the main judges were Fawad and Meesha as was shown in the promos and Farooq was a guest judge but Farooq was the only one who was seen mentoring the contestants. Fawad and Meesha were almost agreeing with everything what Farooq said. Fawad’s focus was more on the stage presence and the same was the case with Meesha. Farooq on the other hand told the musicians what they were doing right and wrong and what should they work on. In short the only true judge in the episode was Farooq. The hosting was okay. Ayesha looked beautiful undoubtedly but for most part her hosting seemed like she was reading out of paper. Maybe this is the first episode and things will hopefully take off as the show moves forward.

The Bands:

There were many bands which impressed the judges and their music was unique too. Aitebar’s cover by the band OB Positive was the best of the evening. The way they performed created a beautiful nostalgia; it was very close to the original as well as unique at the same time which made the whole rendition beautiful. Another band named Jasim and Pindi Boyz performed their own song and it was hilarious and great. Positive created divine feels with Kalab and all the judges were impressed. Positive had also participated in the first season of the show where Fawad and Farooq were themselves participants. Naksh who played Bolo Bolo also got very positive remarks but I didn’t find them unique; their music was okay and their lead vocalist doesn’t seem very polished. Kashmir was another band who performed beautifully. Madlock and Shajr though got yes from the judges were not up to the mark as Madlock should work on coordination more and the lead vocalist’s voice in Shajr was not matching the music they created though their music was very powerful. The music seen in the first episode was very raw and native. The bands will improve more as the show will move forward and the coming episode will hopefully bring more unique bands out on the scene.

This is only the first episode and had a lot of short-comings. Possibly the coming episodes will showcase improvements on the judging side and maybe we could see Atif too. Did you watch the first episode? Which bands you liked? Share in the comments!

Ali Zafar Is Out Of Words For ‘Teefa In Trouble’ Team

Ali Zafar and Maya Ali are making their Pakistani debut with ‘Teefa in Trouble’. Needles to say, we have high expectations with both. The shooting of the movie has just wrapped up and it seems that both the stars have fell short of words for the amount of fun they had on-sets and the love they received.

Director Ahsan Rahim said that his upcoming movie ‘Teefa in Trouble’ would not disappoint the people. Ahsan Rahim said that the film has completed its shooting in Europe with Ali Zafar, Maya Ali, Javed Sheikh, Faisal Qureshi, Mahnoor Haider, Fia Khan and others. He said that dangerous stunts were performed by Ali Zafar himself in the film to make it real. Ali Zafar said that the movie is full of romance and comedy while Maya Ali termed her experience in working in the first film as pleasurable. She also thanked Ahsan Rahim for signing her in the movie.

After Maya Ali and her emotional tribute to the end of her Teefa journey, Ali Zafar has also penned down a letter and we must say that is far more touching than we expected. Uploading the picture on his Instagram account, the ace singer wrote:

Ali Zafar Is Out Of Words For 'Teefa In Trouble' Team

Words fall short to express. #teefaintrouble the experience. #TNTreads his Insta caption.

Ali Zafar will be playing the lead character ‘Teefa’ while Maya Ali will be starring opposite him as ‘Anya’. We hope that the film rules box office as much as it has ruled our heart.

Humaima Malick's Birthday Wish For Sanjay Dutt Is Heart Touching

Humaima has signed the film titled “Sher” with Sanjay Dutt in 2012. But, unfortunately, her Bollywood debut with Dutt was postponed due to his imprisonment. The production has once again been resumed, after his release, and Humaima Malick will be playing the wife of Sanjay Dutt. She will take over her husband’s empire after his death. Tau Dil Ka Kya Hua Episode 5 Review – Unusual & intriguing

The pace of this drama is slow but it has my undivided attention nevertheless. The leading characters in the play and their complicated yet intriguing relationships with each other are the main reason why so far this drama continues to be unpredictable and hasn’t lost its appeal even with its slow pace. Every episode reveals something new about the characters. The story is moving forward with a flow and I can’t help but look forward to what surprises this drama might have in store for the viewers. The fact that every character’s thought process is being shown to the viewers in some way or the other as the story progresses forward also makes it easier for the viewers to connect to these characters. Every episode also has few dialogues which you can listen to and enjoy over and over again. I have always enjoyed Khalil-ur-Rehman’s unusual stories because if they are well executed they can be really powerful. I also find myself comparing this drama to Bunty I Love You over and over again, which too had an unconventional story and was very well put together.

Tau Dil Ka Kya Hua Episode 5 Review - Unusual & intriguing

“Koi ap ko dukh de kr khush ho jaye tu us se dukh le kr khush ho jao. Koi aap ko chor kr jane lage tu use salam kr ke khao, aap hamare nahi janab tu hum bhi aap ke nahin.”

Faris was shown struggling to end this relationship in a way that would prove to him, more than anyone else, that he was not hurting and that he was ready to start afresh. The fact however seems to be very different,  he is constantly struggling to be at peace with the decision Maya took and he has to go along with because he has no choice. While Maya is more than ready to end this relationship, Faris does not want to say goodbye but he has absolutely no control over the situation. He is trying his best to take the higher road but then there are also instances when he thinks about doing something which would hurt Maya too. His proposal to Zoya was somehow something I could see coming especially because of the way Tipu reacted when Zoya was talking about Faris so fondly. Faris’ character is very interesting; a male protagonist like no other! It is good to see a male lead being the centre of attention for a change especially because Faris’ character is brilliantly etched-out and translated on screen faultlessly by Sami Khan. The body language and dialogue delivery has been perfect throughout and Sami Khan’s performance is the main reason why I am enjoying this character so much. I never thought a divorce party would make so much sense to me but the writer, director and of course the actors involved have succeeded in “selling” the idea! The reasons behind this divorce party are such that you can’t help but feel for the person throwing the party and actually look forward to the outcome!

Mansha Pasha has breathed life into Dariya’s character in such a beautiful manner. Her performance is right on point right from the first episode. Tonight, the viewers got an insight into how Maya felt about Dariya when she got married to Faris. Ayeza Khan’s acting in this flashback scene was brilliant; her expressions were superb. It is good to see Ayeza Khan performing so well in a character which is anything but typical.

Overall, I enjoyed watching this episode thanks to the perfect execution, beautiful dialogues and great performances. Some of the conversations could have been chopped down but in general all the conversations added something new to the whole scenario. I am glad Saif did not get a lot of screen time in this episode.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode? Do share your thoughts about it.
