The rise of the Me Too Movement and importance of sex education

0

The Me Too Movement gained immense speed in Pakistan last year when Meesha Shafi accused Ali Zafar of sexually harassing her during a gig at his place. This movement gave, not only women, but also men the power to speak out against acts of sexual harassment which they have suffered through the hands of disgusting, filthy individuals. So how did the Me Too movement start?

MeToo Movement

The Me Too movement actually started way back in 2006, when Tarana Burke, a social activist and community organizer, began using the phrase on Myspace. The movement later began gaining momentum with women coming out with their stories of sexual harassment and abuse. It should be noted that the movement is not gender specific and involves men as well, which makes it equally horrific.

In 2017 and 2018, as many as 80 women came out with sexual harassment and misconduct accusations against American actor, Bill Cosby and American producer, Harvey Weinstein. That is when the movement actually spread more like wildfire with actress Alyssa Milano encouraging the use of the hashtag Me Too.

Me Too in Pakistan

As I mentioned earlier, The Me Too movement gained momentum in Pakistan when Meesha Shafi accused her friend Ali Zafar of sexual harassment. One year on, Ali being a powerful figure has not yet been convicted due to lack of “proofs”. But in all honesty, how can an individual provide proof for such heinous crime?

A guy suddenly gropes you or caresses your back, will you in the heat of the moment grab your phone and start recording? No, I don’t think so.

There is really no way to prove being sexually harassed. Harassment on the other hand comes in various forms. While physical sexual harassment is hard to prove, verbal harassment in which men tend to send lewd or crude messages to women on social media is much easier to prove.

Victim shaming and blame game

In this day and age, when the world has advanced so much, the victim of such a filthy crime still gets blamed.

“Its because of your clothes”

“You should have known better”

“Keep quiet for the sake of our reputation”

I really want to ask how can a person’s clothes be the root cause of harassment. Even women in burqas get raped, little babies get raped…and the most shocking of them all animals get raped!!

Men and #MeToo

The Me Too movement is not gender specific with even men being subjucated to this heart wrenching crime. Recently, Pakistani director Jami Mehmood had the courage to speak out of being a victim of Me Too. It was a brave act on his part to call out the predator and speak up against men.

Importance of Sex Education

With the Me Too movement on the rise and sadly showing no signs stopping as the victims are mostly shamed and perpetrators are left free to roam about. With the rise in sexual assaults especially against minors, children need to know what is right and what is wrong, and the difference between good touch and bad touch. They need to be aware of what will happen to their bodies and how to protect themselves.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas—Ramadan is a time of blessings and prayers for Muslims, but for Pakistani television, it has turned into a big business opportunity. Pakistani television changes its whole colour and tone for the month of Ramadan, but in the last few years, Ramadan programming has also become a victim of formulas. All dramas are generally made on formula, and the same is the case for Ramadan programming now.

Ramadan dramas which saw a big high on rating chats have been going through a sudden decline over the years. The public used to wait for Ramadan drama announcements every year but the craze is dying down and here we analyze why these shows are not performing with as much hype as they used to previously.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

Commercialism at its Peak

After the massive success of the Barat series, Suno Chanda became the modern pioneer of Ramadan dramas. This sparked a trend, leading to a surge in Ramadan dramas every year. With millions of viewers tuning in for quality family entertainment, advertisers quickly took notice. However, over time, these dramas gradually shifted from storytelling to full-fledged advertisement campaigns.

While sponsorship is necessary to keep these productions viable, the blatant commercialism became hard to ignore. From milk and cheese products to mobile phones, excessive product placements started creeping into the scenes. This not only felt tacky but also disrupted the viewing experience for fans. Instead of being immersed in the magical world of fiction and family dynamics, viewers were constantly reminded that they were watching a sales pitch rather than a heartfelt story.

One such example is below:

Mismatched Pairings

The leading pair’s chemistry is what pulls the audience to a drama and that is an established fact. What made dramas like Suno Chanda, Chupke Chupke and even Chaudhary and Sons the hits that they were was the chemistry that the lead actors showed on screen. In recent times, Fairy Tale also had massive viewership due to the lead couple’s chemistry. That is something that is not being replicated anymore.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

Many young actors are now thrown together to make a drama and there is no story to support their chemistry. This puts off the audience and thus the viewership of Ramadan dramas is declining day by day. There are no Arsal and Ajiya or Meenu and Fazi anymore.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

Repetitive Storylines

How many cousin marriages can the viewers see before they get fed up? Yes, getting two cousins and marrying them off is the easiest storyline to come up with and like real life in our country, we see that happening in our dramas too. But at this point, most of these stories are being repeated year after year. The queen of Ramadan dramas, writer Saima Akram Chaudhary also took a break and stated in an interview that she stopped writing these shows as she felt that she had nothing new to write and the stories were getting pretty repetitive.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

The Not So Scientific Formula

What worked in Suno Chanda was emancipation of a girl and realisation of her dreams. What worked in Hum Tum were soft male characters who empowered their women and what worked in Chaudhary and Sons was how generational trauma needs to be stopped and not transferred to the next generations. But channels thought that putting two cousin households together with the leads fighting all the time till they fall in love is what worked with the audience and they are replicating it every year in two dramas per channel. Result: Significant decline in viewership and hype.

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

Ticket To Stardom

The Rise and Fall of Ramadan Dramas

Year on year Ramadan dramas started getting high ratings and the main leads became overnight stars. This is why they started becoming a launch pad for star kids to become an overnight success. People are now signing on to Ramadan dramas as a ticket to overnight stardom. Casting is not being done according to the characters. Yes, sometimes it works but most of the time it is backfiring. The makers are also now using old hit pairs to get eyeballs like they did with Aas Paas and Dil Wali Gali Mein this year.

No Ramadan Spirit

The Ramadan dramas started connecting to the audience because they were embedded in Ramadan culture, There was an underlying Ramadan storyline going on in the shows. It made sense and fans were able to connect with it with respect to them being marketed as Ramadan shows. The departure of Ramadan from these shows initially also made sense but many stories are now totally disconnected from the basic Ramadan premise and this takes away from the overall viewing experience. This is how they were incorporating Ramadan spirit in the shows before:

A serious re-invention is required now in order to bring back the charm of Ramadan dramas and makers need to stop recycling scripts!

The Rights and Wrongs of ‘Mayi Ri’

0

The hue and cry over a soap serial is quite unheard of but ‘Mayi Ri’ has attracted a lot of it. The tagline ‘child marriage’ was tempting enough to be explored. It also piqued the viewers’ curiosity. The viewers have diverse opinions about this drama due to its content.

The Characters and Story

One cannot help but think of Dua Zehra who quite ignorantly could have become a victim of this. There, the parents played their role and saved the girl from ruining her life. In Mayi Ri it is unfortunately the other way around. Parents forcefully married the two teenage warring cousins and put them in a room to live together.

The leading young man Fakhir can easily be termed as a spoilt brat, who is a mediocre student, has a girlfriend, and is a little intimidated by his nerdy cousin whereas the only passion of the girl is her education. The plot seems to be divided into three phases. The first twenty episodes are about them getting married and eventually accepting their relationship out the train to an ultimate wreck. Annie comes from the background of an almost failed marriage of her parents and the father (literally giving a competition to the ‘abba’ of Zindagi Gulzar Hai) left the family to the care of his elder brother who is the father of Fakhir. His father is a typical patriarch-stern and concerned at the same time.

The Rights and Wrongs of ‘Mayi Ri’

For the second leg of the serial they showed them getting closer. He seems to be winning over the girl with the least effort by supporting her education and protecting her from the wrath of her father. It sheds light on how men get more credit for the little or even basic they do in our society. Makers should be lauded for not sensationalizing the romance, yet a nuanced portrayal might have redeemed the ‘disconnect’ between the events as rightfully felt by the audience. However, it is communicated how the entitlement that comes as a married man at such young age, a little bit of trauma bonding with her former cousin cum friend, a savior complex with his now wife, and being isolated after his girlfriend dumped him, brings in that instinctual side of accepting and forwarding the relationship. After all, it is not a Tere Bin.

Does Mayi Ri Glorify Child Marriage?

Now for the ones alleging the drama of the glorification of child marriage or showing a young girl being knocked up is nothing but a kneejerk reaction. Have we all not seen a fully bloated girl sitting next to us in a matriculation or intermediate exam gasping for air? Don’t we all feel sympathy for her? As for the glorification, isn’t it done in the teenage romances on Netflix making youngsters yearn for some sneaky moments? A huge chunk of the audience started fawning over the two leads bickering and caring for each other as if this is a ‘Suno Chanda’. This cannot be. It’s a show having a haunting image of a bewildered child bride on the poster and child marriage is the ugly reality of our society where 18.9 million girls are married off before they turn 18. More than anything, it raises a question mark over the sensibility of the audience. Are they just going to give in to two pretty faces on screen? It cannot be denied that the chemistry was more fueled by the pictures of leads showing off their warm friendship in the BTS. That could have been managed well by the production house so the narrative does not lose its impact. Choosing age-appropriate actors really did the part and added authenticity to the portrayal.

The Rights and Wrongs of ‘Mayi Ri’

His reverting to his original careless self and escaping the situations after knowing the ‘good news’ is the most realistic reaction predicted to be shown in the last leg. Having a friend, a fellow victim by your side is a bonus in the toughest of circumstances but the boy was neither educated about the practical side of marriage nor about the whole process of raising a child. It is his conditioning and so in the character of him to find an escape from responsibility as huge as this. Annie on the other hand is already mature and childbearing will make her more practical and lonely like most girls and women in our society. This is the reality that hits home with this drama. This is not just a classic case of a forced early marriage where out of the two victims, the woman suffers more but also a depiction of a despicable union made in a male-dominated, orthodox, and illiterate household. Here the elders think that if they had done it, so will the next of kin without giving a thought to the lifelong impacts.

The Rights and Wrongs of ‘Mayi Ri’

Closing Remarks

A soap is a longer format of story-telling and to fulfill its requirements there is endless family politics which at some points is tiring and exhausts the subject in Mayi Ri too. It’s not a ‘Rehaai’ of Kashf Foundation which got too dark to bear. It’s a journey of some characters that are palatable at some points in spite of being painful, giving insights into what we turn our gaze away from and into what could have been the best alternative. In short, it is real. While Fakhir, insists on staying in his boy mood, running away from his responsibilities and realities of life, it is in Annie one sees a silver lining. Her grit to break this vicious cycle of backwardness and the passion to burn midnight’s oil to achieve what she wants, against all odds, is palpable even through the screen. Posing a mirror to the masses and still grabbing their attention is the biggest win for the drama and the team should be appreciated for that.

The Released Film Actor In Law Premiere was just like a Fish Market !

0

The premiere of Actor in Law was a completely a mismanaged event. The place was over crowded, it seemed that entire city was invited to have a cinematic experience. The seating arrangement was for fewer people and invited guests were more in number.

The star cast made to the cinema 15 minutes late and the film was already started. Therefore people were busy watching the film and did not even notice that star cast has finally made to the cinema. After a few minutes film was stopped and Fizza Meerza stood up and informed the audience that movie will be played from the beginning as many people have missed the starting of the film. People resisted to the entire idea of playing the movie from the start but nothing changed.

After a while the rock star Atif Aslam left the show , the reason is still unknown. The entire event was a real mess. We hope next time Fizza Meerza and Nabeel Qureshi give us a more organized premiere.

The Release Of Chain Aye Na Is Delayed

After the trailer release of Chain Aye Na, the movie gained many speculations and assumptions about it. Most of them were so negative that the actors had to release defensive statements about it. Seems like the movie is again in the news now before its release.

The Release Of Chain Aye Na Is Delayed

The film was due to appear in cinemas on the twentieth of this month but now it’s been postponed till the eleventh of August.

The Release Of Chain Aye Na Is Delayed

The reason for this delay as given by Shehroz Sabzwari is that they could not promote the film properly. As Syed Noor has been on a trip to Bangkok, the team felt that they were not able to hold promotional events and appear on TV shows about it. After a recent appearance in a morning show, they are all set to bring Chain Aye Na to the attention of viewers before its release.

The Recent Victims of Dragging!

0

Any drama with the simplest story can be made engaging if its pace is steady. Obviously good acting counts along with mature writing skills (it’s not like anyone can write a drama) but the pace is what keeps us hooked.

Recently, our dramas reached India and were appreciated. The mature acting and writing was purchased, along with the fact that they have a few steady paced episodes unlike the dramas there. After this, directors , producers and writers should have started to work really hard in order to create more masterpieces which can be aired abroad. In spite of this, we are getting to see more victims of dragging!

1.Arranged Marriage:

I mentioned in a previous article that this drama needs to end. Despite that, it makes it to my list once again. The story is simple. A cheating, abusive, torturous husband manages to portray his innocent first wife as an evil woman in front of his parents and they give permission to this bechara to marry the love of his life. His second cunning wife is pregnant now and will probably lose her child as punishment for her sins.

This content did not need 20+ episodes but somehow ARY managed to drag it this far. Let’s see whether they’ll ever end it or not!

2. Chup Raho:

You knew this was gonna be here, didn’t you?

The topic is thought-provoking. When I heard about it for the first time, I thought this was going to be a fast paced drama telling victims of sexual abuse to stand up for their rights. But alas, I was mistaken. The drama is bold, but that’s not the issue here. The issue is the stretched and useless scenes which make viewers annoyed.

The most important thing is, that at least I don’t watch this drama for entertainment. I watch it with a serious mood in the hope that it will deal with the issue of sexual abuse. But that seems impossible.

3. Ishq Mein Aisa Bhi Haal Hona Hai:

Samra and Fajar’s father abandoned them because they were daughters. Samra and Adnan (Humayun Ashraf) are in love and newly engaged.  Adnan’s cousin Neha (Hiba Ali) , who is an orphan and has been brought up by her khala( i.e Adnan’s mother) is a rebellious and rude girl who gets used by a rich playboy Shahmir (Yasir Mazhar).  Adnan’s mother falls sick because of this stress and on her supposed deathbed asks, “Kon karega meri Neha se shadi?” (literally) And like a gallant warrior, Adnan decides to marry Neha to save his mother’s life. I don’t get what the dude was thinking but Samra gets it and she decides to end it with Adnan. There’s a side-track between Samra’s sister and her college mate who happens to be Shahmir’s cousin.

The drama is no doubt dragged. First few episodes were on Samra and Adnan’s endless calls, meetings and then the engagement preparations, the shopping spree and then finally the engagement. When Shahmir abandoned Neha and left for America with his newly wedded wife, there were endless crying scenes from Neha and then endless hospital scenes from her khala! Then Samra discovered what a cheat Adnan was and she cried for two episodes.

Let’s see what will happen when Samra’s mother finds out about Adnan and Neha’s Nikkah. I’ll keep tolerating the slow pace to find out who is Samra and Fajar’s father and what will happen to Shahmir now! SPOILER ALERT: I  think it’s Shahmir’s father.

The Real Baaghis

0

This world never was an easy place for women but undoubtedly this struggle for survival has become a hundred times harder in today’s world or may be it always was this hard and it’s only now when women who were wronged have spoken for themselves and have forced us to open our eyes and see the truth that we so conveniently had closed our eyes to for centuries. The need to talk about where we went wrong has never been more relevant than now and there is no better medium to spread awareness than media, be it electronic, social or print.

As much as we need movies and plays telling stories of rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence and honor killing we also need stories that inspire. Women who have fought against all odds and have achieved the un-achievable. As much as the dark side of this society needs to be shown constantly we also need to show the audience that there’s still hope and that no dream is too big. Women who did not comply to the society’s definition of what a woman can and can not do, women who did not let their gender decide their limits, women who are the epitome of freedom and women empowerment.

Today we celebrate such women and their courage. Here’s a list of stories that need to be told through our TV serials and cinema.

1-Syeda Ghulam Fatima

The Real Baaghis

The first time I heard of this superhero of a woman was when Brandon Stanton (the owner of photo-blog Humans of New York) shared her story and helped her raise $1.3 million for her organization, Bonded Labour Liberation Front Pakistan (BLLF). I had never heard of this brave woman or her cause ever before and that makes me terribly sad as I wonder how many other Ghulam Fatimas are still unsung and uncelebrated.

Fatima holds a master’s degree in Political Science from Punjab University. She has been campaigning for worker’s rights and against bonded labour in Pakistani brick factories, kilns. She has been threatened, attacked, and wounded because of her activism. Through her organization, the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, Fatima has established Freedom Centers where workers can go for protection and legal counsel. She is the elected General Secretary of Bonded Labour Liberation Front Pakistan. Alongside her husband, Fatima runs BLLF from a storefront in Lahore.

She helped to release more than 80,000 bonded laborers in Pakistan from all provinces since her engagement, and trained more than 600 women in alternative skills for poverty reduction. In September 2015, Fatima was awarded a Clinton Global Citizen Award for “leadership in civil society” in New York.

2-Shamim Akhtar

The Real Baaghis

Shamim Akhtar, at 53 is Pakistan’s first female driver; she is one such example who decided to go against all odds to make both ends meet for her family and adapted to a role skewed toward gender based obstacles. Married off at 17 years, she quickly found out that she had to fend for herself and her children. In the face of considerable financial hardship, Shamim relied on her own intelligence and strength to take care of her children and marry off her eldest daughters. Her husband was never around, and left her for another woman.

She attributes her success to the Islamabad Traffic Police Training course that paved the way for her to show her the possibilities of being able to drive heavy vehicles as she had gained an excellent road sense and courage to defy all stereotypes associated with driving vehicles. Her untiring efforts later helped her gain a public service vehicle license, making her the first Pakistani woman licensed to drive trailers, tractors and trucks.

3-Samina Khayal Baig

The Real Baaghis

Samina Baig comes from Shimshal village in Hunza Gojal, Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan, and was trained in mountaineering from the age of 15 by her brother, Mirza Ali. She is a student of Arts and began climbing when she was merely four years old. She is a high-altitude mountaineer who in 2013 climbed Mount Everest and then all Seven Summits by 2014. She is the first and only Pakistani woman to climb Everest and the Seven Summits. She is also the youngest Muslim woman to climb Mount Everest, having done so at the age of 21. Samina was the first to climb the peak Chashkin Sar (above 6,000 meters) in Pakistan in 2010, which was later renamed Samina Peak after her. She reached the summit of ‘Koh-i-Brobar’ (‘Mount Equality’) in 2011. Besides the Himalayas, Baig has been employed as a mountain guide and expedition leader in the Hindu Kush and the peaks of Karakoram. Baig has been a professional climber since 2009.

4-Kulsoom Hazara

The Real Baaghis

Kulsoom Hazara, is a young enthusiastic, passionate and determinant Pakistani karateka who belongs to ‘Hazara Community’ located in Baluchistan. She is first female ‘karateka’ to represent Pakistan at international competitions. Despite of inadequate facilities and resources she is very optimistic about her future and vows of winning more medals for Pakistan. She participated in the 2012 Asian Championship, squaring off against fighters from various Asian countries. She is national Karate champion since 2003. She previously represented Pakistan in many international karate events like Islamic games, Asian and south Asian games and won many gold medals for Pakistan. Kulsoom is the only female player in Pakistan karate team who has hat-trick for wining 3 gold medals in 3 competitions and is still holding her record. Recently she took 2 gold medals in south Asian karate championship in new Dehli India and 3 gold medals in national games Lahore.

5-Sabia Abbat

The Real Baaghis

Born and bred in Haripur, Sabia Abbat became the first woman from Hazara division to win the National Cycling Championship in 2013. Being a sports enthusiast at college where she represented the institution in various competitions helped. She saw a cycling competition in 2011 in Pania where the women could barely ride bikes and decided that this was a skill she wanted to learn. Back home, in Haripur, she practiced on her uncle’s cycle, fell a lot but kept at it. The cycling championship has nine events, six of which are held on a velodrome while three are on the road. Haripur has no facilities for training in cycling so for serious practice Sabia has to travel to Lahore. Sabia holds a Bachelor’s degree in physical education. She has been a National Champion, an army athlete and an inspiration and her journey is far from over.

6-Nergis Mavalvala

The Real Baaghis

One of the most recent Pakistani woman to hit the international news headlines has been Karachi-born quantum astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, Associate Department Head of Physics at MIT, and a member of the team of scientists that announced the scientific milestone of detecting gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesised by physicist Albert Einstein a century ago.

Dr Mavalvala worked with researchers at the US-based underground detectors Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Laboratory to build sophisticated sensors to detect gravitational ripples created from the collision of two black holes some 1.3 billion years ago and had been hurtling through space to reach Earth on September 14, 2015. Dr Mavalvala, 47, attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Karachi, before going to the US as a teenager.

The article is already too long and yet this is the tip of the iceberg only there is so much more to where this comes from. Pakistani women are superheroes in true sense of the word and it baffles me why we do not celebrate these women and their stories as much as we focus on the stories that show women as the victim. We hope we get to see more plays and movies focusing on lives of these women in future. Let’s celebrate women for the warriors they really are.

The Raw Public Opinion On All Three Movies

0

Since we have been minutely following the public’s opinion on twitter about all three big films that have been released on eid day we are posting their raw opinions for you and they aren’t written by us. We aren’t misleading public for any of the movie almost all sort of comments are in it and remember the difference between them is not that big, all are average movies with one being the highest-rated on public opinion.

Paray hat love ‘s screenplay is trash, reported by public rest its great cinematic experience but people are angry that they aren’t kids to be fooled
Superstar is a decent average movie with a script that will go better with production.

Heer man jaa is said to be engaging movie by majority, there are negative comments too but it is with less flaws in its script, again the opinion is based on thousands of tweets and latest ones are attached here.

The Rangreza Stars Won’t Marry Actors!

0

Talking about the most watched shows this season, O Rangreza comes to our minds at once. The drama has managed to hook us from the beginning and people have fallen in love with innocent Qasim and the mysterious Sassi. Both the stars Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas are ruling our screens right now. While on an interview, they both were asked if they will marry an actor. And their answers were straightforward NOOOs!

The Rangreza Stars Won't Marry Actors!

Bilal said that he always wanted to be an actor and obviously love his job. But it would be difficult for him to come back home and still talk about the same work environment where he spent the day. He wants a sense of space and a bit free time from what he does all day which won’t be possible if he marries an actress. Bilal is not willing to marry in his family. When asked about why he has so many demands, the actor replied with a witty response ke dimagh bohat ooper chala gaya hai!

The Rangreza Stars Won't Marry Actors!

Sajal, when asked the same question, said that she wants to marry someone with a more stable and “reputable” (she laughed) job since earlier she said in our society when you are asked about what you do and you say Acting, people say woh to theek hai parr kaam kya karte ho. So our Sassi though she loves showbiz in O Rangreza don’t want to get married to an actor in real life.

The Rangreza Stars Won't Marry Actors!

Both the stars were thankful to their fans who loved their drama and are appreciating their work. Lets see when will our Qasim and Sassi will find their life partners and will they stand with their statements of not marrying actors. Only time will tell!

What sets The Ranch apart from other Netflix series is the fact that it was filmed in front of a studio audience. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Ashton Kutcher shared that the first priority for the makers of The Ranch was to set the show in “small-town America. It’s the middle of the country, the heartland … yet nobody makes content for them, I don’t think the success of Duck Dynasty was an accident. I think that show was successful because it spoke to a specific audience that can relate to that life.”

The Quintessential Male of Pakistani Dramas

0

Our dramas usually focus on the lives of women and the female lead plays the central character. The stories are usually about her journey and transitions. It comes as no surprise since women make up the largest segment of the audience. But to better understand the female lead and her transitions, we need to understand the man in her life- rather the male lead.

Vintage-The-Perfect-Man-1914

Here’s a look at what comprises the quintessential man in our dramas:

  • He will promise her the world while he’s courting her but once she becomes his wife, he constantly reminds her that his mother is the most important woman in his life and if she were to ever (God Forbid) disobey her, he wouldn’t hesitate to leave her.
  • If his wife argues with him and/ or has issues with his mother (who, by the way, treats her like a slave), she deserves a slap.
  • If the slap(s) don’t make her shut up, he must divorce her by instantly pronouncing Talaaq three times in a single breath.
  • If his mother (who abhors his wife) accuses her of being unfaithful, he readily throws her stuff in a bag and kicks her out in the middle of the night.
  • If his marriage is going through turbulent times while his wife is expecting, it must mean that she was unfaithful and the child belongs to another man!
  • If another woman expresses an interest in him, he gets easily swayed.
  • When confronted about the other woman, he gives his wife an ultimatum- she can either remain married to him and keep his name (but will definitely have to leave the house) OR she can carry the label of a divorcee for the rest of her god-forsaken life.
  • His wife is not allowed to step out of her house except with the consent of his mother.
  • Its okay for him to flirt with his classmates, his secretary, his cousin, his neighbour but his wife cannot talk to any of her male cousins after getting married since that will reinstate his belief that she is guilty of having an affair.
  • He expects his wife to wake up before he does so she can prepare his breakfast, have his clothes ready and see him off. However, if she calls him during the day, he has every right to get annoyed since how could she be stupid enough to interrupt his day?
  • He keeps reminding his wife that she is lucky to have been married to someone like him!

How many more can you add to the list? I’d love to hear your take. P.S This article is a satirical take on the male lead and is not intended to offend any actor in particular.

The Quintessential Female of Pakistani Dramas

0

As a follow up to my earlier article about the quintessential man in our dramas, (Read article here: https://reviewit.pk/the-quintessential-male-of-pakistani-dramas/), let’s take a closer look at our female lead. Since most of our dramas are women-centric, it’s only fitting that we list out some of those unique qualities that distinguish them from others.

th

Here’s a look at what comprises the quintessential woman in our dramas:

  • She believes her husband will live up to every promise he has ever made while courting her.
  • She puts up with her mother-in-law’s unfair treatment towards her and continues to try her utmost to please her by getting up early, taking care of her tea-making duties, scraping and scrubbing without a single “uff”. It doesn’t matter that her mother-in-law continues voicing her contempt, she’s after the “Bahu of the Year Award”.
  • When her husband slaps her, she keeps her silence since how could she possibly tell her parents how her husband really is.
  • When her mother-in-law accuses her of having an affair, she cries her lungs out and would even drop to her knees and beg her mother-in-law to believe in her piety.
  • When her husband questions her about the father of her baby, she suddenly turns silent and her only response is “Kya aap mujhe itna gira hua samajhte hein?”
  • When her husband divorces her in a jiffy, she remains distraught for months endlessly and finds it difficult to convince anyone that it wasn’t due to any fault of hers. She loses her self-esteem and wonders what went wrong!
  • She befriends the woman who is after her husband and in-fact, on more occasions than one, trusts her husband blindly enough to leave him alone with the other woman.
  • When her husband takes a second wife, she is ready to accept and forgive him so long as he stays with her.
  • She complies with the unreasonable house-arrest restrictions placed upon her by her mother-in-law.
  • She keeps her silence and doesn’t confide in her husband when another man- be it her husband’s brother or an ex-stalker are pursuing her.
  • She thinks that cooking hearty meals are sufficient to keep her man. She neglects herself completely and is more than content being a housemaid and puts her husband and in-laws first.
  • Her family and friends constantly remind her how lucky she is to be married and she feels truly blessed!

How many more can you add to the list? I’d love to hear your take. P.S This article is a satirical take on the female lead and is not intended to offend any actor in particular.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Eyes can do all the magic when it comes to acting. A single flick of the eye can make or break a scene. Sometimes the impact of a whole scene comes simply with the expessions in the eyes and the audience will be able to relate to the character being potrayed on their screens only if the character smiles and cries through their eyes. We have some highly talented actresses who can make us laugh and cry with them and it is their eyes which bind us to their characters and make some memorable dramas. Though we have a large pool of starlets who always manage to win our hearts, here are a few whose power just cannot be denied:

Sajal Aly:

Sajal Aly is eye expression royalty. From bringing mischievousness to romance and anger to hatred, Sajal Aly knows how to make her eyes talk. Those who have seen it can testify that her character Chammi stood out in Aangan just because she would use her eyes to bring the character to life. The obsessive nature of Sassi that she portrayed in O Rangreza is also a testament to how beautifully she uses her eyes and brings characters from paper to screen like a miracle.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Yumna Zaidi:

If you have seen dar Si Jati Hai Sila, you would know the power Yumna Zaidi’s eyes hold. Even in Tere Bin, the audience could not relate to the change in script at the last moment because Yumna managed to portray the anguish of a victim on screen so precisely. The bewilderment in her eyes was telling a whole other story than we were being shown via dialogues.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Saba Qamar:

The literal queen in making her eyes talk. Saba Qamar’s versatility knows no bounds and she can just make you believe in anything just through the expressions in her eyes. The way she portrayed the pain, anguish and sense of betrayal in her last scene in Baaghi is one such example.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Sonya Hussyn:

Sonya Hussyn is quite underrated with respect to the talent she possesses. The actress nailed mental illness with the confusion she showed in her eyes in Saraab as well as the greed she showed in Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida. She was great in Dadal as well and more is yet to come from her.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Atiqa Odho:

Atiqa Odho has always been known for her beautiful eyes and her power to emote through them. Humsafar fans know that you knew how evil she was just by the way she looked at Khirad, just Ashar was too blind to see it. For those familiar with old PTV gems, a long play Zikar Hai Kai Saal Ka will show you how powerful Atiqa Odho’s eyes are.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Sania Saeed:

The versatile actress knows how to impress, how to portray helplessness and how to inculcate the fear of God in one’s heart with one movement of her eyes. Those who are living under a rock and not familiar with the power she holds need to watch Sang e Mah.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Savera Nadeem:

If you have seen Janjalpura, you will know the innocence she brought to the screens. If you have seen Bari Aapa you will be able to experience fear and pressure just from the way she looks at someone and with Wehem she portrayed intrigue with precision. Her one expression in Mere Paas Tum Ho was enough to take the drama to another level. She needs to work more as her fans are always waiting for her projects.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Ayeza Khan:

As we just spoke about Mere Paas Tum Ho, so how can we forget the greed, hatred and betrayal Ayeza Khan brought on the show. She can be the straight forward Farah of Pyare Afzal, the deceiver Mehwish of Mere Paas Tum Ho and who can forget her mischievousness in Chupke Chupke which took the show to another level. Ayeza is one confident queen of the eyes and she knows it.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Iqra Aziz:

Iqra Aziz is a very gifted actress and she knows how to use her eyes to bring the best of her characters on screen. Yes we know how famous Bhola got but the confidence which Noori exuded made the drama what it was. She also floored everyone with a grey character in Raqeeb Se and Iqra truly knows what she is doing.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Honourable mention for new contenders on the block:

Sabeena Farooq:

The whole world just showed their hatred for how Haya used to look at Meerab and hats off to Sabeena Farooq for pulling it off so seamlessly. Her obsession for Murtasim was visible in her eyes and that made all the impact one needed. She is right now mesmerizing everyone with her Ankhain in Kabli Pulao and she is the one to watch out for. Sabeena Farooq is a great addition to the industry and her potential should be realized.

The Queens Of The Eyes- Actresses Edition

Rabya Kulsoom:

Though a new entrant in the industry, Rabya Kulsoom has been able to catch everyone’s attention. She is so good that she has the ability to make supporting characters memorable in Pakistani dramas where they have nearly no role to play in the long run. She was able to hold her own while working with stars like Saba Qamar and Wahaj Ali and this potential must be nurtured.

The Qawwals On ARY Sang ‘ Ali ke Saath hai Zahra ki Shaadi’ On Good Morning Pakistan

0

There are many people who are arguing what the real issue regarding Geo’s action is. Is it that the manqabat ‘ Ali ke Saath hai Zahra ki Shaadi’ was sung at someone’s wedding. Is it that it was sung on “Veena Malik’s” wedding enactment or the real issue is the way the people on the set were behaving when the manqabat was being sung?

Here is a video of the wedding of a couple who does not come from a very well to do background. Some very respected people of our society like Sarim Burney and his wife are also part of the function. Everyone is sitting respectfully and listening to the manqabat. Now, we want to know what the real issue is because it was the talk show host of ARY Mubashar Lucman who raised the issue in the first place. Mubashar Lucman said in his show that is this manqabat was sung in his own sister’s wedding, it would still be wrong. What is his stance now?

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7WfghjJoJG/?igshid=p2xoiodp97ut

Also there is Hania stating that she fears she might lose Danish and Mehwish hinting at something that doesn’t let Danish go back. Moreover we’re shown scenes where Hania, Roomi and Mehwish all seem to be in a hospital following a goodbye from Danish.

The Promo for Meray Paas Tum Ho's Last Episode will Wreck Your Heart

What will happen? Will Khalil ur Rehman Qamar maintain his reputation of no happy endings and kill of Danish in the end? We certainly hope it isn’t that. After the amount of hurt Danish has gone through, this man deserves a happy ending.

The last episode of Meray Paas Tum Ho will air on 25th January, as a double episode from 8pm to 10pm on ARY Digital. Not only that, it is being screened across Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad as a special treat for all Meray Paas Tum Ho fans.

The Positives That Make Our Dramas HIT.

0

Lately most of us have discussed about the negativities that are being shown in our dramas & almost all the viewers condemn it, but it’s been a while that we’ve spoken about the positivity & those qualities that make us all fall in love with our dramas. It’s my little effort to recollect the memories & the positive feelings that we have about our dramas & what are exactly those things that make us end up being such a die heart fan of our Pakistani dramas.

I believe taking names of certain dramas would confine the main reason of this article because no matter what it’s an undoubted fact that Pakistani Drama Industry has produced thousands of dramas that are beyond perfection, so mentioning a certain drama wouldn’t help as we’d definitely be leaving a lot of dramas unnoticed plus I am talking about our dramas as a whole because if one drama has a good story the other has good dialogues, so let’s talk about our dramas in general.

1. The very first thing that I feel has always been a pillar in the popularity of Pakistani Dramas is a “SCRIPT”. All this while whenever we talk about even the olden golden dramas of Pakistan or even the new ones I feel those dramas always get a special attention of the viewers because of a good script. Everyone demands a perfect script & those dramas especially who have a good storyline/script no doubt end up being the favourite of the viewers.

2. Second in my list would be the “RELATE-ABLE CHARACTERS”. I feel this is another beauty of our Pakistani dramas especially that we always see the characters which are relate-able & quite original. We don’t have to see the lead actors in over-done make ups & top-notch wardrobes but it’s the originality and simplicity that does wonders & we end up liking any drama because I feel characters play another important role in making a drama connect to the viewers.

3. Third in my list would be “THE DIALOGUES . We have seen so many dramas over the years whose dialogues have always been appreciated because that’s the beauty of our mother tongue Urdu. We definitely haven’t seen hardcore Urdu being used in any of our dramas but it’s the simplicity & the easiness of conveying a certain message that gets clicked to the audience. Even at times such heavy feelings are conveyed with so much ease & smoothness which actually shows the versatility of our language.

4. Fourth in my list would be “THE REALITY” that our dramas are popular in getting across to the viewers. Any good drama that we see is always based on the reality & if not, it’s closer to reality as well. But I feel any drama that gets hit is definitely the one which the viewers see as real & not superficial because while watching a drama viewers tend to get so involved & at times feel pretty much in relation to a certain drama which I feel also plays an important part in the success.

5. Fifth & the last in my list would be “THE CAST”. The viewers are obviously keen to see their favourite actors perform on-screen & I feel that is also another reason of a success of any serial. A good cast definitely plays a vital role. The cast can also be referred to as a a good actor. The responsibility to project the beauty of any character lies solely on how the actors acts it out. If an actor can not act a certain character, he/she ends up spoiling the whole thing related to that particular character & I feel Pakistan has numerous great actors both males & females who have done & have been doing justice to the characters they are assigned with.

So, these are the factors in my list which I feel are the backbone of our dramas getting successful all these years. I hope I was able to point out the major aspects that make our dramas famous. If you all have any other suggestions that you feel play a part towards the success of our dramas, please feel free to share it with us because it’s been a while that we haven’t discussed about the positives & the good things about our dramas. I’d be looking forward to your comments. :)

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

The Perfect Formula For Ratings – Works Every Time

Pakistani channels and production houses nowadays focus more on getting TRPs than they do on content. Entertainment after all is a business just like any other but some of the production houses take this business a little too seriously. These are the production houses which are primarily in the business to make money therefore they keep on making dramas which would guarantee massive viewership. They forget they also have a responsibility and focus entirely on making money. There are also those people in the industry who incorporate these tried and tested formulas to make dramas which are more meaningful and offer something bigger. If a certain story or some aspect of the plot attracts the attention of majority of the viewers, it is used as a formula in every other drama.

Following are some of the ingredients which almost always attract the audience, sometimes these ingredients are part of dramas which are overall impressive but many times these ingredients completely take over and are in bad taste!

Ratings Are Directly Proportional To How Majboor The Heroine Is

The victim stance indeed is really powerful especially when it comes to Pakistani dramas. This is a tried and tested formula which always works. Making the viewers feel for the characters is an important part of a writer’s job but there are so many of our writers who go overboard. These writers forget to give their characters a definite personality and rely solely on showing these women as victims. The actresses playing these roles and the production houses heading such projects are extremely certain that the ratings are directly proportional to the amount of tears these heroines shed! Most often, the leading lady is shown suffering right from the beginning and the problems she faces increase over time. The most unconvincing and annoying aspect is when these majbooris are forced. Even when there is a way out, these leading ladies stick to the source of their problems (the man in their life) like glue. Recent examples of such leading ladies are Mannu from Mann Mayal, Azra from Mere Bewafa and Mirha from Ishq Tamasha.

4-14

A Dominating “Good Looking” Male Lead

Lately, we have seen so many such leading men in our “popular” dramas whose flaws were glorified and sadly enough, they had a huge fan following too! Mir Haadi from Khaani, Shahmir from Mere Bewafa and Mehrab from Ishq Tamasha are few such examples. Mehrab’s character was actually turned into one of these sadistic sick-minded unreasonable characters primarily because somehow such men help garner more sympathies for the majboor leading ladies. Mir Hadi was the prime example of a “good looking” male lead with tons of flaws, who was the main attraction in drama serial Khaani. The producers wanted to kill his character but could not do so because he had a massive fan following. Shahvez from Sangat is another such example. These heroes were murders and rapist yet they were shown as victims and got a hero’s ending too.

3-19

Two Women Fighting Over A Man

I am not sure what kind of an adrenaline rush most viewers get out of watching women fight over men but the affect it has on ratings gives the producers even more incentive to make such dramas. The majboor aurat’s majbooris are highlighted even more by making her good-for-nothing man fall in love with her best friend, sister or cousin! The flirtation and the husband’s disloyalty and the sufferings of the first wife are given plenty of screen time. The most ironic bit is that this “man” most often is a shoddy character and such a weakling that you only wonder how two women would be stupid enough to fight over him.

2-24

Men Never Suffer The Way Women Do

Even though a grown up man who is sensible enough to run a business and a house starts an affair and gets married to his wife’s best friend out of his own free will but it is never the man’s fault. The dramas which get the TRPs always show that it is always the fault of the other woman! Somehow most of our producers and writers are convinced that if they make a man suffer as miserably as they make the women suffer then they will lose their viewership. This is the reason why women who cheat always get the worst endings but men who do so are always forgiven. In Mere Bewafa the way Shahmir was forgiven was absurd, In Ishq Tamasha Mehrab literally got away with murder and also got a happy ending and in drama serial Ghar Titli Ka Par the past few episodes have been dedicated solely to convincing the viewers that poor Azar was trapped by wicked Anji.

Negativity To The Rescue

When the viewers start feeling for the heroine, the producers decide to turn the more nuanced character into an all out negative character. The recent example is that of Rushna’s character. In order to make Mirha look like an even bigger bechari than she already was Rushna was turned into an unreasonable negative character who was continuously plotting and planning against Mirha. In Ghar Titli Ka Par Anji’s negativity is the main attraction in the show which is why she gets more screen time than Shafaq does. Although, the producers do all this to get more support for their leading ladies and it obviously works for a lot of people but while doing so they completely ruin the characters and as a result the plot goes haywire.

1-29

Rape Victims, Rapists, Survivors

This is a very serious issue which has been highlighted in an intelligent and responsible manner by many of our drama makers but this issue has unfortunately also been used to get attention and ratings. Chup Raho was one such example in which this issue was used to get attention and not to educate. Even in Aisi Hei Tanhai, the track covering this particular tragedy was stretched to the limit and did not serve a bigger purpose. Sangat was another such drama in which the issue of rape was sensationalized and the rapist was glorified. Many dramas also took inspiration from drama serial Udaari but all of them did not do justice to the topic. This topic has been getting the producers the ratings they want therefore this is one of the main reasons why they keep on making dramas on it.

7_Fotor_Collage

First 10 Episodes Should Be Fast-Paced

Yes! This is the key to success. Most producers who want ratings alone make sure that the first 10 episodes are fast-paced and happening. When they have their loyal viewers’ attention, they slow the pace down, the story almost completely loses direction and the sole purpose of the show is to stretch the story as much as possible. Since the viewers get hooked to these dramas in the first few weeks, they keep on tuning into them out of curiosity and that is how even those viewers who do not like such storylines end up contributing to the viewership.

All the examples given in this article are from dramas which got the highest number of ratings in the past few years. There are however those producers and writers as well who get the ratings and attention of the viewers by making dramas with a strong storyline without using any formulas.

Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments section.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

0

Ramadan is the month of blessings, a month we all Muslims wait for all over the world. With special arrangements at Sehar and Iftar, Muslims all around the world try to do more and better. We also wait for Ramadan throughout the year and with everything special that comes with this month, there are special Ramadan transmissions which mostly run day and night the whole month. Since their inception, Ramadan transmissions evolved drastically. And in the last few years, many unwanted trends have incorporated themselves in these transmissions. But the bigger surprise came when Ramadan 2018 was very peaceful as far as the usual drama that is incorporated in these shows go. They were peaceful and nice to watch. Here are few things which made this Ramadan more peaceful and easier:

No Aamir Bhai:

The initiation of Ramadan 2018 came with a ban on Aamir Liaquat Hussain. Yes, it was not a full proof ban as Aamir Bhai got the permission to appear on screen later on but nonetheless, it was nothing less of an achievement for the whole country. The way Aamir Liaquat has degraded the essence of Ramadan shows time and time again is not unheard of. With giving out babies to the most famous and I must add gross AAM KHAYEGA AAM, Aamir Liaquat has done everything with the years passing which should not really be done. This year too he created a lot of fuss with making the scholars fight over issues related to sectarianism and then walked out of the live show. So, yes, Aamir Bhai’s less appearance was indeed something which made our Ramadan more peaceful.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

Very Put Together Hosts:

Controversies and hosting have run hand to hand many times in the past. Take Aamir Liaquat again as an example and also Hamza Ali Abbasi. When a host does not know how to control the topics being discussed or where the guests are going with their opinions, things can get complicated. The other times no one usually wants to see someone with a controversial past suddenly taking hijaab and start hosting a Ramadan transmission. This year all these mistakes seemed really at bay as the hosts of nearly all the transmissions behaved very responsibly and kept the environment controlled and serene, a must for transmissions related to Ramadan.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

The Stop On Circus By The Court:

I cannot even relate to how it happened but somehow all our channels from the big giants to small ones that most people do not even get on their cables ended up with gift shows. People were fighting with the hosts, dancing and doing ridiculous activities to get bikes and washing machines. Many times such segments were a part of the actual transmissions. This year we only had Fahad Mustafa’s Jeeto Pakistan that got people to watch it. Otherwise similar stuff which was a part of the Ramadan transmissions were chopped off. This was undoubtedly another relief after watching people fight over motorcycles on every second channel. Even a little peace is good peace, right?

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

No Fuzool Controversies:

Like our every other show, Ramadan shows also have had a way of connecting controversies with their other content. With Amjad Sabri’s distant nieces and his own family fighting over for the Sabri legacy in a live show to forcefully feeding mangoes to the audience and yes, many times comments by guests or the hosts which somehow hurt someone’s sentiments. Who can forget the epic Sahir Lodhi patriotic meltdown which also occurred in a Ramadan transmission? This year, however, was very safe as not many of that stuff was seen happening on Pakistani television except the Fahd Mustafa episode where he insulted a girl which occurred in the very end. The lack of controversies also helps to keep people’s minds on good things.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

Airing Of Azan:

An order by the court made it obligatory for the channels to air Azan five times a day and it was actually a very beautiful development when all the channels were airing Azan amidst all the planned shows and advertisements. It was a true old-school PTV experience.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

A Good Drama:

Yes, it is a bit out of the context but for some years the special dramas made to be aired during Ramadan are so non-sensical and stupid that you cannot even understand how people come up with those stories. But this year HUM TV broke the dormancy with Suno Chanda which people enjoyed watching throughout the month.

The Peace Of Ramadan 2018!

All in all Ramadan 2018 brought a big improvement in Pakistani television content. What do you think could be done to improve the situation more? Share in comments!

The Pakistani Morning Shows

0

Pakistan is a country which is going through a lot of crisis. The increasing crime rate and terrorist activities have made it difficult for people to enjoy their lives. In such a situation people need some sort of entertainment. Previously it felt really relaxing to see meaningful Pakistani morning shows while relaxing in a comfortable chair with a big mug of coffee but these days the trend of morning shows has changed. The only focus of these shows nowadays is on the host’s dressing and jewellery. Not only the host but also the guests are only displaying the work of different designers by becoming a decoration piece.

Good-morning-show-wedding-week
There are a huge number of housewives watching these Pakistani morning shows and to be honest there is nothing meaningful shown to them. All they get to see is the wedding arrangement, the bride and groom and the singing and dancing. In my opinion these shows must focus on the awareness programs. As the large audience is of the women who stay at home, these shows must tell them ways to become a better wife and an excellent mother. The concept of a morning show is completely disturbed these days. Apart from these wedding ceremonies in the shows, they focus of adult and vulgar issues. This has not only made it difficult to watch these shows with families but also it has had a huge negative impact on the minds of the audience.

maya

The issue of marital conflicts is a huge focus of these shows. Every other day they invite a woman who is tired of bearing the brutal behaviour of her husband and they let everyone know their story. What is the benefit of all this? Absolutely nothing. These issues not only brain wash the audience but they also create a feeling of depression among them. According to me, Pakistani morning shows must be focusing on the talent of the youth, compatibility of the couples, ways to lead a better life, tips to remain active and confident. These shows must act as a grooming tool for the audience. They should provide platforms to the girls who want to start a career.

nadia-khan

One of the Pakistani morning shows was the Nadia khan show. That show had different segments like; health, beauty, fitness and much more. That show as compared to the shows these days was very meaningful. It was not a time waste. She used to invite celebrities and discuss their secrets of becoming famous, she used to invite doctors and ask them about different health related problems of women and she also used to invite dress designers and make up artists to give tips to the women at home. Its not that this doesn’t happen nowadays but this is a minor portion of the three hour transmission of these Pakistani morning shows.

As I mentioned in my previous article that Pakistani people are very emotional they get carried away with whatever is shown. This is what the Pakistani morning shows take advantage of. They invite troubled and depressed people, show their sad stories, and cry a bit and our audience gets carried away which as a result increases the ratings of the show. Our audience should also give suggestions as messages in these shows so that get to know what we demand. It’s a matter of three precious hours each day. In a month they become 90 hours and in a year 1080 hours. Only watching a useless morning show every single day wastes your 1080 hours in a year. Another major focus of these shows these days is on competing with each other. One show arranges a wedding; the other also arranges the same wedding next week. In the same way one show call a fake peer, the other show does the same act the next week. This is what the shows are all about these days.

These shows must also invite talented young students in their shows once in a week or twice so that they can have a platform to show their talent. There are millions of talented youngsters out there; some are creative, some are good singers, some write well and some are all rounders. All they need is a platform. Pakistani morning shows should arrange spelling contests, quizzes and activities for the youth so that they can have somewhere to look up to. Many youngsters idealize different celebrities and they dream to meet them. The morning shows should arrange contests and the winners should be given a chance to meet their favourite celebrities and become like them. This is what a morning show should be like. Only wearing colourful dresses and gossiping not only creates a negative impact but it also wastes a whole three hours of the audience.

The Pakistani Media Women of Talent!

0

The women working in the Entertainment industry of Pakistan have got some real talent and serious potential. It definitely isn’t a piece of cake to work in an industry where you are always at the risk of open and often criticism. According to my personal opinion, it’s the women, who are mostly getting criticized in the social media (particularly Facebook) either for their acting skills or their dressing (Meera, Veena, Mathira and few others are especially on the hit list for that matter). Hence today, I decided to talk about those ladies who really stood out in their respective fields, worked hard, achieved something appreciable and really made us proud.

Mehreen Syed

Mehreen-Syed-Best-Brilliant-Red-Bridal-Make-Over-Photoshoot-2012_6

The first ever Pakistani model to have appeared on the cover of Almara, Mehreen Syed is a wonderful multidimensional personality. Her earlier fame comes from her tremendous modeling career. Mehreen represented Pakistan in many international fashion events and magazines including Vogue and Time. For her modeling career, she has bagged many awards including the “International Model of the Year” and “Face of the Year” awards.

Other than being a spokesperson and brand ambassador for many international brands, Mehreen Syed has broaden her horizon and came up with her own fashion academy IFAP in Lahore, for which, till date I heard nothing but pretty impressive reviews. Not only that, but earlier this year, Mehreen came up with her own blog that incorporates fashion and beauty talk in a desi way. Mehreen Syed – the model, the business women, the wife and now a mother is definitely an inspiration for those who plan to come to this field.

Mehreen Jabbar

With the magnificently successful names like Ramchand Pakistani, Doraha, Daam, Malal and Vasl, Mehreen Jabbar really doesn’t need a formal introduction. Hailing from the city of sea and cool breeze Karachi, Mehreen Jabbar belives in perfection and leaving no loopholes. Her first movie as a director, Ramchand Pakistani won the People’s Choice Award in the Fribourg International Film Festival, Switzerland in a time when Pakistan’s film industry was crippling. Here is a list of awards and nomination that I found on her official website, makes me so proud of her being a Pakistani woman.

Aamina Sheikh

Aamina Sheikh is one of those distinct female celebs for whom I, personally have noticed a lot of hatred and negativity spreading on social media, people just doesn’t find it necessary to think twice before bashing someone’s natural complexion, body shape, postures and dressing for that matter, sadly. I really have to say that she is one of those marvelous dusky beauties we have ever had in Pakistan, and she really knows how to do her job well. Lately, she had been receiving great international exposure and fame for her acting ventures; it was nice seeing news about a Pakistani female film artist in international electronic and print media other than Meera and Veena.

In addition to Lux Style Awards for her serials Dil-e-Nadan, Agar Tum Na Hote and her modeling projects, Aamina Sheikh won the Best Performance by an Actress Award in SAARC Film Festival Awards for her movie Seedlings, and for the same movie, she was awarded at New York Film Festival as well.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, the first ever person to bring an Oscar to home, Pakistan for her venture Saving Face is a proud daughter, a loving wife and a caring mother. I really like the way she dedicated her huge success to the two men (father & husband) in her life, for behind the success of a confident, successful lady, there has to be a fair share of the courage and confidence that males of her family inculcated in her. In 2012, Sharmeen made it to the list of 100 most influential people of the world, I managed to take a list of her other awards and honours from her official website, take a look below. Sharmeen, definitely made all her fellow Pakistanis proud.
