Ohkay so, the writing of Radain Shah, the direction of Ahmad Bhatti & production of iDream Entertainment; Shehnai commenced last night with a double episode & I feel this was the best start a drama with such a huge cast could have. I feel it was a great idea that they decided to give a thorough introduction to almost all the characters. After watching Shehnai, I can already say that the viewers already have an idea of what’s in store for them & it definitely is going to be an interesting watch. Although the writing & execution was entirely different, I definitely got Aangan vibes because its story was also related to a big family & their set of problems.
Cast & Characters
The story has kickstarted with an eventful & thrilling engagement of Bakht (Ramsha Khan) & Meerab (Affan Waheed). The fun part is, they both are not really happy with the idea of this marriage because they both are in love with someone else. Bakht loves Hunain (Hammad Shoaib) & Meerab loves Samreen (Maham Amir). I’m sure it was intentional but just a few moments both Bakht & Meerab had with Hunain & Samreen were self-explanatory that they both haven’t found their Mr. & Ms. Right yet. Samreen & Hunain both have a very different temperament & over the course of time, Bakht & Meerab will realize how they were just pressured into feeling that they were in love, which they actually were not.
Bakht is a daughter of Absar (Javed Sheikh) & Ambreen (Nida Mumtaz). She happens to be the only child. They live in a joint family system with Bakht’s Daadi (Samina Ahmed), uncle Azhar (Behroz Sabzwari), his wife Maliha (Zayyab Qayyum) & their daughter Iffat (Anosha Ali). In general, Absar is the head of the family & he is the one who takes all the decisions but Maliha definitely has an issue with the fact that her husband Azhar is a bit too submissive & doesn’t really think about breaking free from the joint family system.
Meerab is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Zubair (Shehryar Zaidi & Nabila Khan). He has a sister Beena (Anam Tanveer) who is married & has a son named Taimoor. Meerab is a Chartered Accountant & has just returned from London. Zubair & Absar have been friends for decades & this is exactly why they feel the decision they have taken for their children Bakht & Meerab is just perfect. Meerab also has a cousin who accompanies him everywhere, he is Rafay (Arsalan Faisal) & it seems he cleans up after all the messes that Meerab makes. Meerab is the emotional one whereas Rafay happens to be the practical & analytical one who likes to find solutions to problems.
Bakht has been stalling her marriage & she has given the impression to her family that the guys who come for her proposal end up rejecting her but in fact, it is Bakht who shoos them away because she is involved with Hunain & he has been asking her to buy him some time. Hunain has yet to introduce Bakht to his family & Bakht already thinks he is going to send his family for her proposal which is highly unlikely. Meerab is more or less in the same situation too because he has also not introduced his ladylove to his family. The kind of introduction Samreen got, it was obvious that she guilt-trips & manipulates Meerab. More than love, Meerab feels obliged to be the way Samreen wants him to be. Meerab is a kind-hearted person who finds it really hard to say no & this is exactly why he landed himself in this situation where he just could not tell his parents that liking her picture did not mean he approved of the idea of getting married to Bakht.
Absar has two sisters, Tooba & Munni. Munni (Javeria Abbasi) is a divorcee & lives with her family. Tooba (Salma Hassan) is married to Qifayat (Saleem Mairaj) & has two children Beenish (Nida Hussain) & Ahsan (Umar Alam). Being sisters, Munni & Tooba are always on the same page & kind of have teamed up against their bhabhis. The most interesting equation that they have is with Maliha. Although they may not like her because at times she does things that are of their interest too, they team up with her as well. Throughout the episode, it was interesting to note that in this family, I was getting to see all sorts of people; the troublemakers, the gossip mongers, the conspiracy theorists, the opportunists, the well-wishers & then the sane ones who just saw things as they were. The writer definitely sketched a perfect picture of what a joint family system mostly consists of, on the surface they may seem like one big happy family but within they have some family politics which ends up being a bone of contention between all of them.
The Story
It was interesting to see that despite the politics in the family, both Bakht & Iffat were like sisters & friends who did not keep any secrets from one another. Only because it was Bakht’s engagement, Ambreen’s sister Saiqa (Naima Khan) came along with her daughter (Maryam Noor). Once again, the equation they had with Ambreen & Bakht was quite obvious, being sisters to each other, they continued to be supportive throughout the chaos that ensued after Meerab left & did not think about adding fuel to the fire like Ambreen’s in-laws did.
I will definitely say I had a great time watching the introductory episodes of Shehnai. Although this wasn’t something new but I liked the kind of execution the director chose for this script & despite being something that I have seen before, I found it all refreshing. There was a feeling of realism to everything that was happening & what I liked the most was how much focus there was on each & everyone’s emotions. Be it Ambreen or even Absar, then Bakht & also Meerab. Tooba’s introduction was quite clear too where she had her insecurities & complexes because of which her bitterness was self-explanatory.
My favorite from the lot were Qifayat & the character played by Maryam Noor. I really wish they had at least introduced her with her name because she really had a strong screen presence & I enjoyed watching her character quite a lot. I am glad Saleem Mairaj chose to play this sort of role & it is simply amazing how he has even embraced this kind of character where he is just simply problematic without even realizing that about himself. Umar Alam also played his part well & I noticed that although he had next to no dialogues, his expressions were just perfect in each & every situation. These supporting characters stood out the most & I am already liking the second lead track that we’ll see evolving between Maryam Noor’s character & Rafay. Rafay already seems interested in nurturing it & she was just not having it. The short exchange of certain expressions between the two made me giggle because it was simply cute.
Thoughts After Introductory Episode
Ramsha Khan & Affan Waheed played their parts perfectly. It won’t be wrong to say that Bakht reminded me a lot of Samiya from Ghisi Piti Mohabbat but it kind of feels nice to know that she will find her happily-ever-after in Shehnai. Ramsha Khan is absolutely effortless in the portrayal of these kinds of characters. Affan Waheed gave Meerab’s character a very nice personality & what I liked the most about him was how amidst the chaos, he was trying to keep his act together. Bakht got to have an outburst but Meerab didn’t even have that luxury. I must say every time both Affan & Ramsha shared the screen together, their chemistry was amazing. I am glad we’re getting to see such a fresh pair & they both definitely look great together. All the actors performed beautifully & right from the beginning, their chemistry as a family was established & it just worked. I must say the production value is great & I couldn’t help notice how beautiful the interiors were. All the ladies looked beautiful & I loved their styling & outfits. Javeria Abbasi looked gorgeous & so did everyone else. Although Ramsha Khan was in the limelight, Maryam Noor caught the attention immediately & it was amazing seeing how effortless she was as well.
I wish there was a bit more clarity on Meerab’s name & its pronunciation. In the beginning, I heard Absar calling him Mehrab, which actually made sense because Bakht’s name is also related to luck, therefore Mehrab is another sign which people usually relate to being lucky. In promos, his name was written as Meerab but throughout the episode, the pronunciation kept on changing. I wonder if it is Mehrab or Meerab? Also if anyone knows the name of Maryam Noor’s character then please do let me know. Salma Hassan was quite interesting as Tooba but Saleem Mairaj stole the show with the subtlety in his body language. Zainab Qayyum, Javeria Abbasi, Javed Sheikh, Samina Ahmed, Nida Mumtaz & the rest of the cast played their parts really well too. Some of the dialogues were quite amusing & the overall direction was great. I am not usually a fan of background music & sound effects but this part was well taken care of in Shehnai where I found myself enjoying the background score quite a lot. I can safely say that after watching the first episode, Shehnai definitely is the kind of drama that I’ll be looking forward to every week. Faryal talking about drama serial ‘Raqeeb Se’ mentioned that “The first time I read the script that was an experience within itself. When I read Insha’s character that was so me. I agreed that I can perform this character but honestly speaking it was very difficult. Insha has a really dark sense of humor. Insha is viewers perspective, she doesn’t know anything.”
“In between the shooting sometimes I got afraid and worried that I’m not acting and these other co-stars are such good actors. I was so scared the entire time while shooting. I did not study Urdu language after third grade so it was quite difficult for me to pronounce some of the lines in the script but our director Kashif Nisar was always there for us. He helped me to rehearse and read the script again and again so I could deliver my best”, added Faryal.
Faryal further said that “In the start everyone was like there are flaws in this drama serial and I was like no just wait and watch. I promise that there are no flaws in script.”
A new web series is to be aired in Pakistan in which an attempt has been made to portray journalists and anchorpersons in such a way that they do journalism with a ‘Lifafa’ (an envelope) and lie.
Mashal Khan, who played the lead role in the web series, said that this story is not about a woman who does everything emotionally, but about a woman who is forced to do all this.
The series, titled ‘Lifafa Dayan’, will be aired on UrduFlix, which is a platform similar to Netflix.
Talking to BBC Urdu, Mashal Khan said that when the director of the play, Rao Ayaz, called her and told her how much margin there was for performing in this role, she was very happy.
“Eventually, there are characters that we can prove as actors that we have a lot of potentials,” she said. “That’s why I was so excited. ”
Regarding the preparation of her role, actress Mashal Khan said, “I locked myself in a room and tried to imagine what my mental state would be like if I were really this person. I imagined what happened to me when I got to that point and how lonely I was and how my interactions are with the people”.
“I changed my life according to the character and locked myself in the room,” Mashal Khan said.
Mashal Khan said, “This role was very challenging. Although my mental state changed a lot in playing it, I was happy to do it.”
Referring to the main idea of the play, Farhan Gohar, the producer of the play, said, “We watch news channels in the morning and evening and the word “Lifafa” is heard a lot there, so I thought why not use this word and Let’s make a story for the drama about the famous cases that are talked about a lot in our media.
On choosing a title such as Lifafa Dayan, he said: “The point is that when a person works with a “Lifafa”, he then goes to great lengths to do something against his profession, even if it is a misrepresentation. Or it could be wrong, it could be a lie, or it could kill someone. ”

Areeba Habib recently played a central character in Jalan and unfortunately, her performance was just as plain as her character. There were so many intense scenes in Jalan but in all these scenes Areeba’s performance was not up to the mark. Other than that usually her timing is not right and it seems like she relies on the director’s cues so much that all her ‘intense’ scenes appear to be more staged than realistic.

Asad Siddiqui’s monotonous and underwhelming performances make him one of the most mediocre actors in the industry. Even after acting in so many dramas, he doesn’t have a single memorable performance to his credit. It is almost as if he is quite content with the status he enjoys in the industry and does not even endeavor to do better. I guess we all understand how he got in the industry and why he continues to get such good projects despite of his poor acting skills.
Sanam Jung
Sanam Jung has only been part of a few dramas but all of them have been mega projects with a star cast. Although she played leading roles in all the projects she starred in, there wasn’t a single performance that left its mark. Sanam Jung was always an unimpressive performer but now that she is back after taking a break, her performances have been even worse. In Mein Na Janoo she overdid the becharapan and now in her new drama Qarar, she is trying too hard to appear bubbly and carefree. Sanam Jung fails to give subtle and balanced performances, she always focuses on one aspect of her character and ends up making it unappealing and even annoying. She is definitely one of those actors who fail because they try too hard.
Momal Sheikh
Momal Sheikh is another actor who has a long list of dramas to her credit and she has even worked in Bollywood yet even all this on-screen experience has not in any way polished Momal’s acting skills. She especially has a difficult time delivering her dialogues, most of the time her dialogue delivery is painfully slow perhaps because she finds it difficult to recall the dialogues. The fact that she has been playing more or less the same roles is another reason why even with all this exposure her acting skills have been unimpressive.
Zara Noor Abbas
The only time Zara Noor Abbas’s performance gelled in with the character she played was in Ehd-e-Wafa. The reason for this was that the character she played was over-the-top. Otherwise, Zara’s dialogue delivery and acting remind us of the heroines from those old classic films who were required to be overdramatic. Whether she is playing a simple character or a modern one, Zara Noor Abbas’s accent and tone never change. Zara shared that she ‘experimented’ when she chose to be overdramatic in Zebaish but the fact is that Zara Noor Abbas has always been overdramatic no matter what kind of role she is playing. Her performances have never been natural or spontaneous. She belongs to a family with some of the best actresses in the industry yet she has not been able to change her acting style. Right now in the drama serial Phaans, she is playing another leading character, the character she is playing has a lot going for it but Zara Noor Abbas has completely failed to change her tone and dialogue delivery to meet the requirements of her role. Just like every other project, her acting is ‘off’ and does not have an impact.
Agha Ali
Agha Ali is another actor who got a lot of opportunities to prove himself yet except for his role and performance in Tum Yaad Aye all of his performances have been average and unimpressive. The fact that Agha Ali is extremely conscious about his looks reflects in his controlled and limited expressions on screen. He is constantly trying hard to look good even when he is playing the most negative characters on screen which definitely impacts his performances. It is definitely surprising that he managed to make it this far with such mediocre acting skills but then that is also the reason why he is not listed among A-list actors.
Shehroz Sabzwari
Shehroz Sabzwari has been associated with the field of acting for such a long time yet his acting skills leave a lot to be desired. The only time he was likable in a role was in Mana Ka Gharana and that was also because of the way the character had been written. It did not have a big margin for performance and therefore was an easy role to play. Other than that, Shehroz Sabzwari’s performance in every drama is more or less the same. Because of this monotonous acting, the producers now offer him roles that do not require any changes in his style of acting. He completely fails in scenes that require intensity because his range as an actor is limited to playing simple roles and translate only some emotions on screen.
Anmol Baloch
Anmol Baloch continues to get leading roles even though her acting skills are as limited as they get! Right now, she is playing another leading role in the drama serial Khwaab Nagar Ki Shehzadi and when compared to many other actresses who have played similar roles, Anmol Baloch falls short to a great extent! Just like all the other actors on this list, Anmol Baloch has limited expressions and she is also so self-conscious that her acting is never natural. There is more focus on looking good and making the most of the few expressions she feels confident delivering than meeting the requirements of the role. It is a mystery how Naveen Waqar managed to stay in the industry for so long. She has the same confused expressions in every single scene; too many of them. In her recent drama, Chalawa Naveen Waqar is playing the role of a mother but even then sometimes she is more expressive than needed. Her performances are not natural even after so much experience.
Mikaal Zulfiqar
It would be safe to say that Mikaal Zulfiqar is really comfortable playing the flawed husband because that is all he is assigned to do over and over again! Banned and censored in its home country, Sarmad Khoosat’s “Zindagi Tamasha” is making waves globally. The project, which has bagged several international accolades, became the latest recipient of the Best Film and Best Actor awards at the Asian World Film Festival. The event, held virtually on March 15, witnessed the inclusion of 40 films from over 20 participating countries, all of which were showcased during the six-day extravaganza. Films included 11 Oscar submissions for Best International Feature Film and 12 Golden Globe submissions for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language.
Zindagi Tamasha, the Oscar submission from Pakistan, took the Snow Leopard Award for Best Film. Director Sarmad Khoosat received the award from Jury member Luba Balagova Kandoor, stated a press release. The Snow Leopard Award for Best Actor went to Arif Hassan for his performance in Zindagi Tamasha.
“I am overwhelmed by the recognition this film of ours has received internationally,” Hassan said while accepting his award. “I am extremely grateful to our director Sarmad Khoosat whose dedication to the film was unparalleled. It’s about time we start telling stories that are unique to the Asian culture. There are so many stories that remain untold by the mainstream media.”
‘Zindagi Tamasha’ will represent all of us, our ‘Pakistan’ at the Oscars, says Sarmad Khoosat. Sarmad was extremely grateful for the honour too. “Winning two awards at the festival has given me and my team the right kind of morale boost and the emotional boost as well,” the filmmaker shared, upon receiving the prize for Best Film. “It has been a tumultuous journey with this film. Not being able to show it here in my own home country, it got banned. But finding this new audience for the film has made me believe more and more in the power of cinema,” he concluded.
