Old Melodies

0

Music of the Subcontinent was extremely melodious and rich and the legacy continues in Pakistan even today. It not only dates back to pre-partition era rather many music instruments were dug out from the ruins of Mohenjo Daro and Harrappa; implying that its roots dates back to the ancient civilizations. The music and melodies produced by our artists are and will always be matchless. We have had legendary singers like Mehdi Hassan, Noor Jahan, Reshma, Farida khanum, Iqbal Bano, Nayyara Noor, Alam Lohar and Ahmed Rushdi etc. The masterpieces produced by them are countless however I’ll be sharing a few of my favorites which majority of our new generation calls “boring”, which reminds me of ONE DIRECTION, what is the craze with it?? Have people or more specifically girls gone mad or what?? People are actually obsessed with their crap :/.

A few of my favorites are:
1. Jab koi Pyar se Bulaye ga by Mehdi Hassan
2. Aye Ishq Humein Barbad na ker by Nayyara Noor
3. Hum k Thehrey Ajnabi by Nayyara Noor
4. Ranjish hi Sahi by Mehdi Hassan
5. Bhooli hui hun Dastaan by Ahmed Rushdi
6. Goriey Main jana Perdas by Reshma and Pervaiz Mehdi
7. Jo na Mil sakay wohi Bewafa by Noor Jehan
8. Mujh se Pehli c Mohabat by Noor Jehan
9. Dasht e Tanhai by Iqbal Bano
10. Who Ishq jo Hum se Rooth gaya by Farida Khanum
11. Aj Janay ki zid na Karo by Farida Khanum
12. Akhiyan Nu Rehn de by Reshma
13. Meri Hum joliyan by Reshma
14. Ulfat ki Nai Manzil ko Chala by Iqbal Bano
15. Kabi Hum Khoobsorat the by Nayyara Noor

aa

Many of the old numbers have been sung by many other singers as well but none of them have been able to acquire the perfection and aura the originals had, significantly Atif Aslam’s tributes to Reshma. He is a great singer but I wish he stops torturing her songs.

The quality of language of most of the lyrics compels me to fall in love with the language. The flawless voices, accurate pronunciation (unlike many present day singers), perfect music and the sweetness with which they are sung further adds in the glory of the golden melodies. One of most interesting things is that they used to sing live and that too with perfection. Poetry of Faiz, Nasir Kazmi, Habib Jalib, Ghalib, Ahmed Faraz and many others have been revitalized by them.
Do share the Oldies you like.

Oh The Monotony!

0

Ohkay so, there used to be a time when all our dramas used to be so different & the viewers used to get a lot of variety in terms of stories & the plots but since the last couple of years, all I see is a monopoly of monotony in our dramas. It seems as if the market has been saturated; the writers have completely run out of ideas & the channels are playing it safe as it is so obvious that they want to stick to very limited subjects which they believe with earn them ratings.

While assessing the dramas that I have seen in these last couple of years, I tried to pick on certain things that were so similar & were almost a part of every other drama. This thing showcases how our writers have run out of ideas & it also shows how they stick to very similar things in almost every other drama to tell a story. I feel we can have dramas & stories on so many different subjects because the sky’s the limit when it comes to ideas but sadly, our writers & the channels have forgotten what a variety tastes like & they choose to stick to the not-so-marvellous monotony. Let’s go through those aspects that are a part of each & every drama that have made it to our screens in the recent times:

The mother of all evils; the not-so Holy Matrimony:

Do I need to say more? Even though I know I don’t, I’d like to elaborate just in case there are some writers who’re reading this & aren’t getting a clear picture about what I am trying to say. Every other drama in fact ALL the dramas that we’re getting to see revolve around the subject of marriage & the ordeals that overtake the newly wedded couple’s life, as if Pakistanis are only born to get married just so that they can ruin their lives with their own hands. Yes, marriage is unavoidable but then, it is something that can be avoided in our dramas! Ohkay, even if they want to show what a marriage is like, can they please not only focus on the shadi ke side-effects & focus on all the other good things that do happen when someone gets married? I am tired of seeing every other drama revolving around shadi & the sazishain that later take place. The writers here really need to think outside the shadi box because like I said, there are a million other plots that they can explore in order to write a drama (if they are so keen on not letting their pens/keyboards rest or want to prevent their minds from getting rusty).

Coll 1

Your wife’s cheek is the best itch-repellent you will ever have:

I am actually quite appalled & tired of seeing the domestic violence being a part of our dramas lately. I really want to know why the writers always end up adding a scene or two in every episode with a husband slapping his wife? Literally the way they have normalized slaps & chantas in our dramas gives out a message as if slapping your wife is a very normal feat, like let’s say doing your groceries or eating your food? It seems so contradicting that often in some dramas, they might not ‘show’ a wife getting hit by her husband but the way they show a wife caressing her swollen red cheek afterwards sets things straight, right away. When the directors know that it is something appalling & honestly, quite disgusting to even elaborate on screen, so what’s the need to add such a scene in the drama in the first place? This trend of normalizing domestic violence in our dramas is alarming & should be cut down because if the channels/writers/directors think this is a perfect picture of an ‘entertainment’, then they should switch on their laptops, open the Google Chrome & Google down the telephone numbers of the nearest psychiatrist available in their vicinities.

Out of 7 Billion people, I choose to marry the one I don’t love:

Like seriously? All the couples that we get to see in our dramas are the most incompatible couples ever seen in the history of mankind or ever recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is so obvious that the writers make two wrong people get married in their dramas, just so that they can take the story forward. In most of the cases, those who get married do have a chance to back out but they go ahead with the wedding as if they are going to buy a Kurta & they can come out of the shop anytime if they like because they didn’t find anything that fitted the bill of their choice?

I will return to you my love, when I’ll get bored of this wedlock-adventure:

As a continuation of my previous point of monotony, all the characters that we get to see in our dramas are already in love with someone else but they just get married because their mommy asks them to or to put it in simple words, they don’t have the guts to say “ke ammi meli shadi ush shay kalwa dain jish ko mai pashand kalta yan kalti hoon”. I have seen so many dramas where I see two people who’re already in love with someone else, get married & what for? The answer is simple, to create a havoc in their spouse’s life just so that they can bounce back to their beloved after their shadi ka laddu goes stale.

Coll 2

Divorce!!! Oops my mouth automatically blurted it out, but I promise I don’t mean it:

Divorce is such a complex & serious subject which our writers have literally made a fun of. When they don’t know how to instill more bechargi into the lives of our heroines, they resort to the ultimate D word & later play along those lines just so that they can keep on getting the ratings they need & they get to stretch the drama beyond a point where even a chewing gum breaks. After slapping, the divorce is such a subject & the word which is handled & blurted out so casually in our dramas as if the men are born with the right to divorce their wives if God Forbid she commits a mistake as petty as reminding him to get a gas cylinder filled for cooking purpose, just because he sighted the mood to say it. In some pathetic cases, the writers have even given the edge to the guys to even back out from the divorce & refuse to admit point blank, just so that they can extract as much cheapness as they can from this sickening situation.

Let’s only find a friend indeed, when you’re absolutely in need:

I have seen this thing in so many dramas where when a girl is thrown out of her home or chooses to leave her husband’s place, she goes straight to her friend’s place, who by the way was nowhere to be seen in let’s say, the first 40 episodes of the drama? The funny thing is these instant 2 minute noodle-like friends show so much of courtesy & act as if they were BFFL (best friends for life) with the heroine but they end up looking desperate to give their best shot for the 2 minutes of coverage they get on-screen & oh I may as well add that whenever the director picks a certain girl to play the role of a friend, he makes sure that the friend is acting & talent free. As much as they want to restore the faith in humanity by showing overly helpful friends, they end up highlighting the meanness of the heroines who only remember their friends when they are in need.

Don’t know how to take the story forward or spread the rumour; let’s use a KID as a wireless medium:

The role of the kids in our dramas can’t be underestimated & for all the wrong reasons because it gets so obvious, whenever you see a kid in the picture, always be sure that he or she will be used one way or the other to either instill a silly idea in someone’s mind or take the story forward because everything & everyone will end up revolving around the kid & that’s how the story of the drama will progress. I feel this aspect of including the kids in our dramas is also exploited because it is so obvious that the way the kids behave & speak on-screen is completely unrealistic most of, in fact all the time. The kids can serve the purpose of being a bigger daadi amman or dada abba so I think the producers safely opt for a kid because they can make them work for 2 roles in the price of 1.

So, this was my list of the monotonous things that are prevailing in our dramas. I actually find all these things so off-putting because every other drama revolves around more or less the similar situations. They all tell the same tale but in different words but I so wish that the producers & the writers start coming up with something different because there is no dearth of ideas to bring into picture & make a good drama. Please share your thoughts about this subject & also feel free to add more monotonous issues that you are tired seeing being a part of our dramas in the recent times. :)

Oh Dear, Not That Again!

0

Having written a few reviews the past couple of weeks, I had to sit through the entire episodes instead of fast forwarding some scenes as I usually do. As a result of paying closer attention, I was drawn to quite a few hilarious similarities in most dramas and thought I would share those. I wanted to be sure that I am not repeating anything if an article about this has been covered on this website before so I went through the archive and came across a couple but after reading them and the comments, I have tried to ensure there is no duplication. However, if by any chance there is an overlap by any chance – it was not intentional.

Right. Now that the disclaimer is done, I have tried to put everything into three broad categories.

The characters:

Jack of all trades:

The actor that made me think of this phrase in the first place has been a doctor in Tere Baghair, a senior executive in Sehra Mein Safar and what not. Another actor often seen in his trouser braces again pops up in every other drama mostly as a doctor. I tried checking the credits of the dramas they appeared in and then googled random names off the credits but as much as we see them in every other drama – I could not trace them on the internet and then gave up as it was too much effort. Then again, they say a picture speaks a thousand words – these should be able to jolt your memory!

PIC1

Inspector Gadget – rather his grumpy assistant Chief Quimby:

I remember watching Inspector Gadget as a kid and I know there are several popular mystery/detective characters that have evolved after that but I do not follow any of those shows. This award in my opinion definitely goes to Huma Nawab. Ever since she has returned to TV all I see her do is play negative, suspicious characters with her head tossing side to side and eyes narrowed. She was the suspicious mother in Dua and then in Judai she is the ever interfering wife/friend.

PIC2

The hyena:
Much as I think her acting has improved considerably and I actually enjoy watching her in Tere Mere Beech but once Sanam Choudhary is agitated or angry or upset or anything (!!) she shrieks and does she shriek! I am not being mean for if she has a high pitched voice that is God given but to push that voice to the very limit feels like scratching nails on a chalkboard!

PIC3

The tutors!
And in abundance! Hamza Ali Abbasi in Man Mayal, Ali Kazmi in Sehra Mein Safar, Noor Hasan in Kisay Chahoon and Affan Waheed in Bhai. Don’t shoot me, I do not find all of them attractive personally but they are presented as young good looking tutors and all I can remember is that we did not have such tutors rather the old Sri Lankan tutors during our O and A Levels! Hmm.

Howling (wailing) wolf

Aha! Who else could this be but Shaheen Khan. Can’t put a face to the name? Even if I did not post the photos below you would still guess who she is when I say she was the wailing mother in Chup Raho, wailing khala in Ishq Parast, wailing phuppo in Tere Mere Beech, wailing mother in Kisay Chahoon – in short, the wailing wolf. I swear, the moment this woman opens her mouth I hit the forward or mute button because I know it will only be a whole lot of howling, rona dhona, hands wringing, the works.

PIC4

The bemaar weepers
Rubina Ashraf takes the cake in this one with Sonia Hussain a close second. In dramas such as Kitna Satatay Ho and now Gul e Rana, this woman seems to be struggling to breathe seriously! The more she gasps, the more devoted a mother she is. I think! Sonia Hussain although handles the flippant natural roles so effortlessly, the second she starts to cry seems to be asthmatic too.
PIC 5

The mirchisssss

I could not think of what else to call them! Sara khan seems to have risen as an actress but the way she talks has this ring of ‘ssssssssssss’ to it as does Ushna Shah when she does her crying scenes – as if constantly mirchein lagi huee hon!

This brings me to the second category – the ghissi pitti lines. I know there are plenty more but I think some have been mentioned before and some I can not think of right now so here’s my list:

Aap mazaak tau nahin kar rahay? I am still waiting for the ‘joker’ in question to actually reply with a haan, mein mazaak kar raha tha hahahaha!’ Ugh!

Meri baat tau sunainThis line really puts me off. Ab jitna time and energy and even words the person wastes in saying that, utni dair mein asal baat bol bhi do!! This happens in every other drama but the one I have never forgotten was that wretched Nadia Bhabhi (Mawra Hocane) in Ek Tamana La hasil si. Oh man, the amount of thappars and chappals she got and all she could say (a thousand times at least) was meri baat tau sunain!!!!

Aray aap agaye?! Nahin, I am hanging like a bat outside your front door. That line is quite addictive I must admit – I have almost caught myself saying something similar when the person is actually standing right before your eyes, in the flesh!

PIC 6
Hamaray moo par kalak mal di – I had grown quite used to that line and did not realise how used to it I was until I watched the video of this new song of Sia ft. Sean Paul ‘Cheap Thrills’. The pair dancing literally have kalak-ed faces and I burst out laughing because the first thought that came to my mind when I saw them was this line. Do look it up if you have not seen the video already!

Mujhay aap kay kaam apnay haathon se karna acha lagta hai – or was it khushi milti hai. That one just sweeps right over my head. Okay I get the cooking bit but washing the shirts, ironing?! And I am referring to those drama households where there are servants but the dutiful, loving wife does everything apnay haathon se. I happily chuck my husband’s office shirts into the washing machine without checking for any marks and have come quite close to one of those old Brite ad scenes where the guy throws his ‘pagri’ down in anger because it had a mark on it and the woman trembles (haha – just kidding but why offer to wash shirts yourself?!).

Slice lain gay? I will not cover any breakfast lines or scenes as I noticed they were mentioned in another article I read but I do not understand this ‘slice’ business. I spent 15 years in Pakistan growing up and we said bread or toast or ‘dabbal roti’ but slice? And it is not used as ‘would you like a slice of bread’ in fact, it is used as ‘slice par makhan‘ or ‘slice aur anda day do’. Hain?

Khushkabhri: This one is a prize! I agree babies are a huge khushkhabri – I have two of my own alhamdolillah. But it is funny how instead of saying so and so is pregnant or you are about to become a father/grandparent – it is always ‘khushkabhri hai ‘ and everyone smiles in delight as if there could be no other possible meaning to that word. Makes me laugh thinking suppose a guy (single) in a drama is promoted at work and announces to his mother Maa, khush kabhri hai and maa ka heart fail ho jaye keh hain, shaadi kab kee mujhay bataya tak nahin?!

Haye mein barbaad ho gayee – instantly images of bombs and destruction flash in my mind but nah,all I actually see is a hatti katti aurat. Hmm.

I could go on but I will stop there at the crazy lines. The characters and lines were what made me laugh but there are also some common scenes:

The ever looming heart attack: Man! Beti nay shaadi se inkaar kar diya – heart attack! So and so ka accident ho gaya – mum goes and has a heart attack where as the one who was in an accident survives but upon hearing that mum had a heart attack suffers one himself – wait, who survived in the end? Salan mein namak daalna bhool gayi –heart attack! It seems as if the slightest thing will definitely bring on a heart attack. But heck, Firdous Jamal in Mera Yaar Miladay shakes and wobbles and keels over every other second and I feel before he will have a heart attack he will give me one!

Eavesdropping:  if the characters in our plays ever closed doors when having a conversation or talking on the phone – the story would never move forward. Plotting, planning, declaration of love – you would get to know all only if you hang outside half opened doors.

Helping hubby with the blazer: I almost deleted this one thinking what if I offend anyone who actually does this in reality, because it sure as hell happens in almost every household in the dramas when hubby is off to work. Someone please explain this to me – sign of love or avoiding getting creases or stuck struggling to get the the other arm in when one already is?!

I could go on but I had to scratch off a few off my list when I read them already mentioned in a couple of other articles. In the end I know I should say the writers and directors really should do something about changing these clichéd lines/characters/scenes but heck, what’s a Pakistani drama without all this eh? Are there any characters or dialogues that drive you up the wall? Would love to hear them and your thoughts on this article!

O Rangreza Last Episode – Review!

Ohkay so, finally this drama ended & I can’t be more relieved that I wouldn’t have to tune to this torture anymore!

All this while I stopped talking about Qasim because to me he was just a plain annoying puppet, but the opening scene along with everything else that he did made me detest his character even more. So, it turns out that Qasim could raise his voice as well as his hand on Meena, the girl who was just insecure & wanted to protect what was hers, but when it came to Sassi, all he could do is plead in front of her. Qasim was perfectly fine with Meena when she was being Mammo part 2, but the moment she started stating facts, he couldn’t tolerate her. Also, Qasim impregnated Meena, but in front of Sassi, he called his marital relation a majboori & also confessed that he still loved her! Wow! What a wuss!

Anyways, not that I am feeling the ending that Sassi met, but I am glad she didn’t turn out to be a home-wrecker. Sassi was just a restless being who wanted one adventure after another. First, her adventure was bringing Sonia in Khayyam’s life, then her adventure was to make Mammo suffer, after that she turned everyone’s life into hell only to pursue a new adventure which was working in a film, next was following Wajih & trying to make him fall in love with herself, then a new adventure began by hating everyone; Sonia, Khayyam, Meena & in the end she fell in love with Qasim because she was bored & ran out of other adventure options, so she decided to try her hands on wrecking his marriage. I am not sure how was Sassi ‘bold’ because seeing her entire journey & the ending that she met, to me she was ‘psychotic’ & not ‘bold’. Also, I must say the writer should re-evaluate his definition of bold & how he sees bold women because all the bold women in his drama met a tragic end; Sonia died miserably & Sassi will continue to live aimlessly like a ‘malang’ for the rest of her life. So I am not sure why he sees bold women like this where he thinks they can’t be normal beings? The only good thing was Sassi’s refusal to get married to puppet Qasim, who just sat there waiting to hear her say ‘qabool hai’, hah!

Right from the beginning, the viewers just couldn’t relate to Sassi’s character & that was the reason why this drama wasn’t getting ratings – something the writer himself shared under one of the reviews, but those, including me, who were happy to see something different advocated Sassi’s character & sadly, when things still didn’t work out, the team members started blaming the viewers for not having the sensibility or the wisdom to understand this ‘bold’ character. So, now when this drama has ended, I am rolling my eyes really hard because I can’t wrap my head about this ‘boldness’ which the team started using as an excuse or let’s say sheild to hide behind!

Mammo & Khayyam fizzled in the background & Khayyam’s character had nothing, absolutely nothing to offer. He just got this label that he is ‘khudgarz’ but apart from that, there was nothing in his character. He was just a man suffering from mid life crisis & ended up losing everything in the pursuit of overcoming that crisis. No remorse, no apologies, nothing & he still got away because there was another one-dimensional character Mammo who couldn’t do better!

I can not believe that this drama began on such a high note & ended up like this? Not that this drama was working but the needless dragging sealed the deal that once a super-hit drama was going to end as a flop. Sajal Ali & Noman Ejaz were good. Bilal Abbas Khan was good too. I am not sure what was worse, the story or Hamza Firdous or both? Ummm I think I will go with the last option. Umair Rana was wasted in this drama & Sonia Mishal ended up becoming a peeve of mine with her never-ending vocal vibration & the extremely unflattering messy makeup. Irsa Ghazal deserves a continuous facial massage for the next year or so because I can’t imagine how painful it must have been for her to sport such a depressing look on her face for so long. The actress playing the role of Kareeman Bua seems to be the only respectable aspect of this drama, despite her limited screen-time, she seemed to be the one who broke the monotony of madness that this entire family was an ambassdor of. I will once again say that Hamza Firdous should leave acting for those who know how to do it in stead of becoming an eyesore for the viewers. This drama could’ve broken records but sad to see the fate it met. The only good thing about this drama is the OST. Please share your thoughts.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

O Rangreza Episode 9 Review – Brilliant!

Ohkay so, another episode, another layer lifted off the characters, which showcased the depth the writer has added in each & every single character. Just when you think you know every other character in & out, the writer surprises you with a new detail which further helps you in forming an opinion about it. This is what I love about O Rangreza, there’s so much that the writer wants you to explore due to which you never find any scene, any scenario uninteresting & this is what the brilliance of this drama is!

All this while, I had a firm belief that Khayyam was a coward & he has proved it time & again but in this episode, we also got to learn that Khayyam was not only conniving but manipulative as well. The way Khayyam devised the entire plan went to show that he believes in having everything that he wants by hook or by crook. Since Khayyam knew that Sassi could create a havoc over his & Sonia’s marriage & she was capable of not allowing it to happen, in stead of backing out, he chose to give her what she wanted; the permission to join the film industry but then again, there was a catch which Sassi at that point couldn’t see. Since Khayyam is a coward, he now wanted Sassi’s future husband to do the heavy-lifting on his behalf, because then Khayyam wouldn’t have to face the world & answer their questions as to why he allowed his daughter to become an actress as then he would easily say that Sassi is doing everything with her husband’s permission. Khayyam really thought things through & he did all this because he can not afford to lose Sonia Jahan, with this he proved how selfish he is because he for once can not give up on his desires for the sake of his daughter. Khayyam still hasn’t been able to understand that this was the right time where he could set an example for Sassi, where he could show her the right path by doing the right thing himself but he chose the easier way by making a deal with her because it guaranteed him his own marriage. If Khayyam would’ve been genuinely concerned for Sassi, he would’ve said that fine, I won’t get married to Sonia & you should stop dreaming about becoming an actress too but he chose not to give up on his own desire & still came up with this strategy of getting her married, thinking it will work. It is so easy for Khayyam to blame Mumtaz for faulty upbringing but has he ever analyzed what part he has played in raising his children & what sort of influence he has had on them?

Khayyam really is underestimating Sassi by believing that she would get married & settle for the deal he made with her. Sassi obviously didn’t show much of a reaction because she knows when the time will come, she will deal with things her way. I just couldn’t believe what a coward Khayyam was & how he was now trying to get rid of Sassi by choosing a husband for her, like in stead of dealing with his daughter on his own & understanding her concerns, he was actually trying to turn a blind eye for his own mental peace. Ever since Khayyam understood that Sassi’s responsibility is overwhelming for him, he decided to create a distance between himself & her & for him marriage is the perfect answer for this!

So, Khayyam’s pick for Sassi was Qasim. It was interesting how Khayyam subtly reminded Qasim of everything that he has done for him so far but when it came to the actual proposal, he made Mumtaz say it because his inflated ego didn’t allow him to ‘request’ Qasim. Khayyam is so egoistic that he couldn’t actually put forth Sassi’s proposal in front of Qasim himself as that would give Qasim an edge over him that he was the one who approached Qasim for this marriage. Like Kareeman Bua said, Qasim is another Mumtaz & in this episode we saw that Khayyam was exactly trying to do that by turning him into a scapegoat. Khayyam knows that by using Qasim as a stooge, he will be able to control Sassi as well – another scenario which showed how manipulative Khayyam was. Once again, Khayyam now told Qasim that he has to stop Sassi, like this is something that he should be doing himself but he appointed Qasim for it because Khayyam the coward doesn’t want to take the responsibility of tackling his daughter himself!

Sassi proved that she is going to do what she wants to & for that reason, she herself went to see Wajih Kamal. Even though Wajih didn’t show much interest in her but the way he told her that she was missing the spark was basically his way of testing her as he wants to see how far she can go & how driven she is towards her goal. I loved the way in return, Sassi tried to rile Wajih up by bringing her father’s name because she knew that one way or the other, Sonia will be made to face the brunt which would indirectly hurt her father, again this was Sassi’s way of getting back at him!

I loved Kareeman Bua’s excitement when it came to Sassi & Qasim’s wedding but then again Qasim is happy but still not ready to let Sassi know that he is the one who has been chosen for her. Qasim can already see that things aren’t as simple as Khayyam was making them look like because with just one sentence, one reminder of what he has done for Qasim & what he expects from him, Khayyam brought him down to the ground. Qasim also knows that Sassi will never accept him because he is not her ideal, he is not like Khayyam & he was already feeling burdened by it. At least it is good that Qasim has Kareeman Bua on his side, Mumtaz is a failure so she could obviously not encourage him the way Kareeman Bua did. It was nice to see Kareeman assuring Qasim that he was perfect & supporting him to tell everything to Sassi because the sooner the better!

All this while I was excited to see Tipu’s character & even though I know he is going to contribute to the story a great deal but after seeing his short introduction, I am not too sure because I didn’t really get the actor playing the role of Tipu. His acting was completely off & the way he was delivering his dialogues was a bit odd too. I know it is a bit too quick to judge but in the first impression, his character wasn’t well-received, anyways let’s see if that will change in the episodes to come.

Overall, this episode was quite interesting & I loved seeing how the writer further elaborated Khayyam Sani’s twisted character. He really is a depiction of all those men out there who want everything for themselves & who try run away from any such responsibility the moment things get a bit overbearing for them. I liked Omair Rana’s performance in this episode, like he came for a brief moment but he was absolutely convincing as Wajih Kamal – the director. Sajal Ali & Bilal Abbas Khan are making this drama a treat to watch, I just love them as Sassi & Qasim. The preview of the next episode seemed promising as well, I am waiting to find out how Sassi will react when she will learn that her husband-to-be is Qasim, but then again I am already feeling bad for Qasim as Sassi’s attitude towards him will be insulting & that will hurt him, which he doesn’t deserve, so let’s see how things roll. O Rangreza Episode 8 Review – Outstanding Performances!

Ohkay so, what a brilliant episode of O Rangreza. I love the way the story is moving forward & the pace is perfect at this stage too. As the story is progressing, we are getting to understand the writer’s perspective more & more, where through Sassi’s character, he is highlighting the double standards of men. It is praise-worthy that even after so many episodes, we get to know more about every single character every single time. What I also loved about this episode was how even in such serious circumstances, there was a touch of humor which made things quite lighthearted & easy to grasp.

So, just when things became a bit overwhelming for Khayyam, he decided to get Sassi married. When things were perfectly fine between him & Sassi, Khayyam was the one who dissed the idea of her marriage at such an early age because he didn’t see her as a burden but now when Sassi was giving him a hard time, he thought this was the only way to deal with Sassi rather it was the only way out of this situation. Now at this stage when Sassi needs his guidance the most, when she needs his attention & his love, Khayyam is turning a blind-eye. This decision of Khayyam showed how he is someone who loves to run away from his problems, like he doesn’t have enough spine to face the obstacles like a man. Once again, this entire scenario highlighted the fact that despite posing to be the man of the house, Khayyam was just a coward who was now trying to get rid of Sassi for his own convenience.

The entire rishta scene was quite interesting. No one thought that Sassi would do such a thing. Even though Khayyam had told his friend that Sassi was a bit unconventional & unpredictable, Sassi outdid her father because she did what he never had imagined. I love how Sassi plays with everyone’s mind, like where her family thought that she would create a havoc over the news of her sudden marriage, she remained calm & collected & in the end did something that shook them to no end. For the first time, Khayyam was blank, like he was helpless as well as clueless because he was finding it hard to deal with Sassi. Sassi has made it impossible for Khayyam to come to a conclusion as to how he should deal with her? Yes, being a father, Khayyam still has some soft corner for Sassi in his heart that is why he was worried but then what she has put him up with is also bothering Khayyam to no end!

I must say, Khayyam displayed a lot of selfishness when he once again approached Sonia Jahan. He knows that it is because of her & Sassi’s desire of being like her that has put him under such an awkward position in his life but still he chose to let her know that he wants her. Sonia Jahan was hurt at what she heard from Khayyam that is why she decided to close his chapter off her life because even she understood that it was perfectly alright for Khayyam to love her but it was strictly not ohkay for Sonia to influence Sassi. It’s like Khayyam wants the best of both, he wants the one he loves irrespective of what she does like he said, but on the other hand, he forbids his daughter to idealize the one he loves because he would never condone that. Khayyam Sani is a typical man who thinks he is entitled to do whatever he wants because he is a man whereas when it comes to his daughter, he wants her to abide by the rules set by him & the society because that in any case hurts him & his pride. Khayyam knows that no one might question him for his choice of getting married to Sonia but the entire world would question him if Sassi would choose that path so once again, out of his own selfishness he disapproves of Sassi’s choices!

Oh well, I think it is safe to say that I am tired of Mumtaz, like when I saw her crying buckets, I felt nothing for her. I loved Kareeman Bua in this episode, it was like she gave words to the viewers’ feelings when she said ‘shadi har maslay ka hal nahi hota’. Khayyam & even Mumtaz were trying to find a convenient way out of this situation by marrying Sassi off but good that Sassi took a stand for herself, in an outrageous way but she did because she has the right to. So yes, back to Mumtaz, yes, I am done feeling sorry for her because her submissiveness is the reason behind her sufferings. Yes, I get it, she has given up, she has accepted failure as her fate but the least she can do is stop following Khayyam’s lead blindly. Yes, she has no control over Khayyam or even Sassi but she can draw a line because that’s something that is totally under her control but she chooses not to & that makes my sympathy go out of the window for her! Mumtaz herself brought Sonia back in Khayyam’s life because she already assumed that she couldn’t do anything for both Khayyam & Sassi!?!

I loved the scenes between Sassi & Qasim. Qasim actually thought that he will get a clear cut answer from a girl like Sassi who is completely twisted (in a good way). Qasim thought since Sassi is over Khayyam & she doesn’t idealize him, now he stands a chance but Sassi has someone else in her mind. I am not sure if she is going to go after Wajih Kamal because she would want to hurt Sonia Jahan or she genuinely likes him. Sassi is someone who is going to make the weirdest of choices because she doesn’t want to fall under the bracket of ‘normal’, she doesn’t want to settle for ‘normal’ ever & she has made that quiet clear!

Overall, this episode was brilliant. Even though Sajal Ali has proved her mettle as an actress but by playing Sassi’s character, she is showcasing what she had in her because this is the type of performance that we never got to see before from her & it is mind-blowing. Noman Ejaz is doing a wonderful job as a helpless father & so is Irsa Ghazal, though I may not be a fan of her character but yes, that doesn’t take away the fact that she has performed convincingly too. Qasim as meesni bili is flawless as well, I love the titles Sassi gives to him & the way he accepts everything is also amusing. Yes, Kareeman Bua was right, Qasim is another Mammo & she could see him being walked over exactly like her. I so wish the scholarship & his time away from this setting brings a change in Qasim’s personality, I really am looking forward to it. The way they have made this drama a visual treat with all those vibrant colors & aesthetically appeasing backdrops is phenomenal, it goes to show the amount of effort that has gone in this project & it shines through. O Rangreza Episode 7 Review – Major Development!

Ohkay so, this episode was more like a decider which will now change the course of the story. This episode had a major twist to its credit & it will bring a drastic change in everyone’s life. It is quite interesting how with each passing episode, the viewers are getting to know the characters more & more, like every single time they show us something new, which we haven’t seen before to further form an opinion about them.

Khayyam has read Mumtaz inside out, he knows what to say & how to say anything to her in order to get it done & this is exactly why, he softened his tone, took her hand in his hand & then put forth his decision, making it manipulatively sound like a request that he wants to get married to Sonia Jahan. There’s a limit to walking all over your spouse but Khayyam Sani has no barriers. It was ironic how after getting Mumtaz’s answer, which he obviously was aware of, he had the audacity to ask her if he was being unfair or not? Has he left any choice for her? Has he given her any edge, any security, any respect or equality due to which Mumtaz would’ve told him that she disapproves his decision? That she was hurt? That he was being unfair?

Again, I totally get that Khayyam never respected or treated Mumtaz with love but upon being asked by Kareeman, Mumtaz had the same answer, that he wouldn’t have changed his mind if she would’ve told him. It is like Mumtaz has already given up, yes Khayyam has played a major part in shaping her mindset like that where she believes that nothing that she’d say or do would make Khayyam change his decisions but then again why was Mumtaz so sure? Why was she so sure that stopping Khayyam wouldn’t work? Mumtaz thinks being submissive is her only duty as a wife but then, showing possessiveness, demanding attention & putting forth her own opinion are also some of the responsibilities she has as a woman & then as a wife. That entire conversation was a life changing moment for both Khayyam & Mumtaz but the irony was that the outcome was pre-decided because both Khayyam & Mumtaz knew what was going to happen!

So, Sassi decided to have a conversation with Sonia Jahan, may be she wanted to tell her to back off only to get back at her father. Sassi would now do everything to take away the one Khayyam loves just the way he decided to take her away from the dreams she has always had. So, Sassi found out the truth about Sonia Jahan & her husband Wajih Kamal (Omair Rana). Sonia & Wajih both have an unhealthy relationship & Sonia is comfortably deceiving him by two timing with Khayyam. I loved Sassi’s reaction when she returned to her home after witnessing everything, like she could see how hard her father was going to suffer now. I know it is mean but Sassi is like that, she is finding repose in her father’s suffering. It was quite interesting to note how after getting a green signal from Mumtaz for his second marriage, Khayyam’s tone & attitude changed where he was again belittling her for being uncultured enough to even make a call & complain about the phone!

I loved the conversation that Sonia & Khayyam had, where Khayyam was now trying to act as her husband, questioning her about her choices & relations but Sonia on the other hand expected Khayyam to not act like a typical man, exactly what Sassi expected. I laughed at how Khayyam told Sonia that before this decision of his, she was just a celebrity but now she belonged to him, so all of a sudden his standards for her had changed. Sonia is just another Sassi that Khayyam will have to deal with, who will not budge & won’t put up with his double standards. Just a single confrontation was enough for Khayyam to have a break down so he really should analyze before jumping into the marriage.

Qasim’s break down was heart-breaking. It is sad that without even knowing Sassi can push Qasim to such a limit. Ever since coming back, Qasim has really been sensitive in the matters concerning Sassi & because of that he is only hurting himself more & more. Until Sassi sorts her stuff out, Qasim should really keep himself composed because if he will continue to sway with Sassi’s tantrums & attitude, he will end up hurting himself further.

I loved this episode overall & thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s performance. Noman Ejaz was phenomenal today & so was Irsa Ghazal. I am really looking forward to Omair Rana’s performance & character, I am sure he is not going to make things easier for Sonia & Khayyam both. Sana Fakhar has been at the top of her game now & it is a treat watching her on screen. Sajal Ali didn’t get much screen-time but her laugh was all that was needed to leave a mark. Bilal Abbas Khan has been phenomenal as Qasim, I don’t see any other actor fitting the character of Qasim like Bilal has. Definitely looking forward to the next episode, can’t wait.
