Vasay Chaudhry On Star Iftaar With Sarmad Khoosat

Being one of the most accomplished writers in the industry, Vasay Chaudhry needs no introduction at all. Comedy writing is his forte and he has numerous sitcoms and drama serials to his credit. He also writes scripts for awards shows. In film-making, Vasay Chaudhry is associated with the production house of Humayun Saeed and Shahzad Nasib. Today, Sarmad Khoosat was delighted to welcome his qadeemi dost, Vasay Chaudhry to the show.

This episode was enjoyable and hilarious, I mean, with Vasay Chaudhry, what else do you expect? Vasay Chaudhry shared how he first met Sarmad Khoosat in Government College University (Lahore) and it went to show that these guys go way back. He admitted that he doesn’t know the first thing about cooking and usually, Sarmad is the one asking all the questions but this time it was interesting that Vasay asked Sarmad how he developed an interest in cooking -that Khirad kay balon say clip nikalnay wala comment was hilarious! :P

Vasay Chaudhry spoke fondly of his daughters and said that he has been in the entertainment industry for almost seventeen years now but it is only after the birth of his eldest daughter that he started to receive awards and accolades.

In this episode, we saw Sarmad Khoosat’s fresh take on French Toast, which he said was primarily for kids. It was good to see him try something different. Sarmad is a perfectionist and he was not very happy with the presentation. Have a look:

Maya Ali is one of the most well-loved celebrities, especially after blockbuster drama serial, Diyar e Dil.

Now, talking to Dawn Images, Maya Ali revealed that these days she is in India for a meeting with an Indian film production company. “They called my manager around three months ago and asked for my availability. Before anything, I mentioned my restrictions and when they were okay with it, my visa process began.”

“I met their producer, male lead and director. I told them directly that I am not dying to come to Bollywood or anything because I have a lot of work in my own country. I have some issues regarding wardrobe. Until those issues are sorted out, I won’t say yes to them.”

Also, Pakistani model and actress Sadia Khan has been approached for a role in the same movie so she is in India, too.

Adnan Siddiqui is one of the most prominent names of the industry. Not only has he won praise and accolades for his work in Pakistan, he also made his Hollywood debut with 2007 film, A Mighty Heart. We will be seeing him in Pakistani movie, Yalghaar this year. Also, he is set to make his Bollywood debut with Sridevi’s film, Mom.

In a recent interview, Adnan Siddiqui revealed that this was not the only Bollywood film offered to him. “I got a call from Yash Raj Films (YRF) for a role in Mardaani. They wanted me to audition for a role of a villain (and) I found the part interesting. But then they (YRF) called up saying they have got a young villain and wanted me to play a police officer. I was not keen on playing this role.”
There were some more offers but Adnan Siddiqui turned them down.

Mom, which revolves around a stepmother’s strained relationship with her teenage daughter, drew his interest. “I have been part of the industry for 27 years and I have proved myself. I wanted to try something different. I wanted to do something of substance in Hindi film industry and Mom was the perfect choice.”

“I am waiting for Mom to release and then I will decide what next to do (in Bollywood).”

Sajal Ali will also be making her Bollywood debut with this film.

Directed by Hassan Rana, produced by Waqas Butt and written by Haider Rizvi, Yalghaar is a much anticipated war-epic film, based on the true story of Pakistan Army’s Swat Operation.
Yalghaar boasts an ensemble cast including Shan Shahid, Humayun Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui, Armeena Khan, Ayesha Omer amongst others.

Talking to Express Tribune, director Hassan Rana revealed, “The rough cut is ready and we are now working on the post-production for Yalghaar, mainly the visual effects (VFX) and sound design. We are currently uploading the film on the servers after which production companies from four different countries will work on it.”

“Minor post-production will also be done in Turkey and Bangkok. The sound design, on the other hand, would take place at Skywalker Sound in the US.”

As far as the release dates are concerned, since the film follows the operation led Pakistani Army and boosts patriotism, “A lot of the people have recommended releasing Yalghaar either on August 14 or September 6 as it would complement the movie’s theme. We can only begin marketing and promotions for the movie once we have the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) in our hands, so a July release at this point does not seem possible.”

Ahsan Khan masterfully plays the character of Imtiaz, a pedophile who abuses his stepdaughter. Now, in a thought-provoking article that Ahsan Khan has written himself, he talks about child abuse, his character in Udaari and how the drama aims to educate the public.

As we all know, Udaari has been pivotal in bringing the issue of child abuse to light. Many victims who have never been able to talk about their nightmarish experiences have taken strength from the issue’s recent exposure in mainstream media.

Several people in my circle have confided in me — seemingly very normal, functional households can also have such issues.

So, why do all of us try to shove this very real issue under the carpet?

Child Abuse is a very serious and pertinent issue in our society. Just because we have chosen to ignore it, doesn’t mean it will go away. As a nation, our stance has been to hope that this very real danger will sort itself out while we keep our heads buried in the ground, unable to see or hear what’s happening around us.

As a father myself, I often lay awake at night and ponder over issues like child abuse. Will I be able to protect my kids against the evils of society that exist? What would I do if one day, any one of those evils manages to touch my child’s life?

Just like other Pakistanis, I too was raised in an environment in which certain topics were taboo. Perhaps our elders believed that to protect us from certain atrocities, the best course of action was to never speak of them. But do I want to raise my kids the same way? Or would I rather have my kids talk about their problems openly with me? By creating a sense of shame around these topics, will I really be doing what’s best for my kids?

It was only because of my character in Udaari, Imtiaz, that I started researching the effects of child abuse on a child’s psyche.

Other than the obvious physical damage that sexual abuse can cause, the psychological impact is long-term. Children may feel like they are responsible for the abuse, which can lead to self-loathing and sexual problems as they grow older — they may become excessively promiscuous or become unable to have intimate relations.

Children usually do not open up about their abuse. Instead, they become anxious individuals who lack confidence. They choose not to share their apprehensions, in the fear that others won’t believe them or will be angry with them. They also fear that such an incident will split their family apart. Due to these worries, false accusations of sexual abuse are uncommon. So if a child confides in you, take them seriously. Do not turn a blind eye!

As a nation, we should bring issues like child abuse on the forefront to discuss them, instead of brushing them under the rug, and what better way to do that than through our mass media?

Media personalities and key figures have shaped fashion trends, language and our culture. It’s high time we start shaping mindsets for the better. It is not only our privilege, but our responsibility to do so.

Jami Puts His Movie, ‘Downward Dog’ On Hold

In the midst of filmmakers that insist on making commercially successful, masala-filled movies, there are a handful of directors that dare to think differently, and one of them is Jami who has movies like Operation 021 and Moor to his credit.

Talking to Express Tribune, Jami revealed, “Downward [Dog] is in limbo for now … If I make a movie like this right after [Operation] 021 and Moor people would say, ‘He’s lost it,’”

Jami likes to think outside the box and is not very happy with where the Pakistani cinema is headed. “People aren’t ready for this type of cinema yet. We are stuck in the ‘Govinda’ phase right now and someone has to come and make a Satya type film to help us come out of it. A movie like The Lunchbox needs to happen to encourage new film-makers.”

His previous films, Operation 021 and Moor did not get much attention. “I remember that Moor was getting very few and odd show timings like 11 in the morning.”

Downward Dog sounds really different and intelligent. “My movie touches upon the Objectives Resolution and how our country became the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Making a movie on that topic would be like making a film on the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Even if it is positive, it may not be approved by the authorities.It won’t be a commercial film in the vein of 3 Idiots but more along the lines of something like Rang De Basanti … something that suits my style.”

Iqra Aziz & Zarnish Khan’s Upcoming Drama Serial

Iqra Aziz And Zarnish are two beautiful actresses that are relatively new to the industry, but they have given some brilliant performances in the past because of which viewers greatly admire and respect their work. Iqra Aziz did really well as the titular character in Muqaddas and these days, she is doing great in Dewana. Zarnish’s dialogue delivery is very impressive and even though Sehra Mein Safar went downhill, her performance was praise-worthy.

Now, the two will be seen in Fahim Burney’s upcoming drama on Hum TV. Not much has been revealed but Iqra and Zarnish posted pictures on instagram:

Nimra Bucha On Star Iftaar With Sarmad Khoosat

I knew that Sarmad Khoosat was going to invite Nimra Bucha because they have worked together in several projects and are good friends. Sarmad called Nimra Bucha his ‘humzaad’ and spoke highly of her as an actress and as a person.

I enjoyed this episode because Nimra was very honest – I couldn’t stifle a laugh when she called the ‘agar aap insaan na hote aur khane peene ki cheez hote tou kia hote’ question stupid (and I agree!) – and also because the two are very good friends so it definitely felt like a nice, casual chit chat between two friends.

I like how in this episode, both Sarmad and Nimra talked about taking steps to save the natural environment. She explained how she and her husband recycle things instead of throwing them away.

Today, Sarmad prepared Kharay Masala Ka Qeema, Mango Salsa and Falsay Ka Juice. I think in a show that is hardly 20 minutes long, making three things was not a very good idea. I think Sarmad’s kitchen is very cute and colourful because of which this show is a visual delight. Also, Sarmad’s beautiful use of Urdu makes me genuinely happy.

I am a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to learn much about Nimra, her work or future projects. But, this was a good episode. Share your thoughts.

Besharam – Episode 04, 05 & 06!

Ohkay so, these three episodes of Besharam were quite dhamakaydaar, intense, interesting & most importantly, done really really well. The writer here deserves all the credit because she not only introduced us to strong main leads but she is actually putting their characters to good use to show how two strong individuals can run the course of their lives in dire situations. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these episodes one after another & the 6th episode went by so quickly that I actually had to check again if I watched the complete episode or not. I am so glad that the drama is so well-paced & you’re left longing for more by the end of every single episode. I was actually quite happy that I had 3 episodes to watch together but now seems like it’s going to be a long wait every single week. :)

Haider saw what Mishal had to go through at her father’s funeral. Haider could see that what Mishal’s brother put her up with was uncalled for. The conversation Haider had about Mishal when he saw his friends discussing her magazine photo-shoot went to show that Haider didn’t believe in judging people but sadly, there came a time when he ended up judging Mishal too. Mishal on her own had no idea that Haider saw her & witnessed everything that happened at Tahir Malik’s house, but just because she saw that a tag of being a politician was attached to Haider, she also ended up judging him.

The 4th episode was all about the talk show that Haider & Mishal attended. Even though I knew that Haider & Mishal were emotional & impulsive decision makers, I actually felt that their meeting & their cross talking seemed a little out of the place & a bit too forced. The writer actually should’ve shown an interaction between Haider & Mishal that lead them to form negative opinions about each other before they met at the talk show because by doing that, the writer could’ve justified all the ill feelings Mishal garnered about Haider. A small conversation that didn’t end well was all that was needed to justify what was yet to come. Mishal was always shown to be as someone who was in check with her sanity & always believed in containing her emotions to herself but the way she acted during that live show told an entire different story. Mishal didn’t seem like herself & she kept on accusing Haider & judging him despite having no knowledge about him as a person. Yes, it was understandable that just because her own father was a politician, Mishal saw every single politician in the same light & assumed that Haider was just like Tahir too but a girl like her who always believed in respecting others didn’t really make much sense by unnecessarily blaming someone she had just met. Haider tried his best to control himself but just when he saw that Mishal was crossing the line, he ended up passing a few comments too which hurt Mishal a great deal. That entire scene could’ve been done well & honestly, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have because it seemed a bit too haphazard & sudden, considering how Mishal had no solid reasons to make such personal attacks at Haider. The thing I found quite amusing was how the anchor was being applauded & encouraged by his team for making Mishal & Haider fight as it was earning them the skyrocketed ratings, haha. This is exactly what happens & this is exactly what the main motive behind all these talk shows is.

Mishal’s demand of apology from Haider didn’t really seem justified because if she had considered her own behavior, she would’ve understood that if there was someone who needed to apologize, it was Mishal herself & not Haider. Haider being an impulsive person proposed to Mishal & got married to her then & there. I must say, things started working for me after they both got married because everything that happened before that seemed a bit too dramatic & unrealistic, but nevertheless, it all worked later because Haider & Mishal made it work out. Haider knew that he had landed himself in deep trouble & he was ready to give Mishal a free-hand to choose her path but just because Mishal heard how Haider had no trust in the models, she knew she had to prove him wrong by showing that models can make the relations & the marriages work. Mishal has always lived her life with her head held high because she has not compromised on her values but the thing that pinches her the most is when people paint her with the same brush as they paint the other models with. Mishal is eager to let the people around her know that she is not the typical model that people presume her to be. She is just as down to earth & as rooted as any other random girl, that is why when she heard that Haider had some preconceived notions about her, she decided to prove him wrong by deciding to go with him to his house as his bride. The confessions she made about how she will never leave him alone & how she will never walk away were quite emotional, it showed how eager she was to get the validation from a guy she had just met.

I enjoyed watching Haider & Mishal as a newly married couple a lot as all the thoughts that were running through their minds were making an appearance on their faces, where they knew they made a huge mistake but also had it in their hearts that may be this could work out. Haider knew that he’ll have a lot of convincing to do because his mother might never accept Mishal & Mishal knew that her mother will disown her as she was also an emotional wreck after Tahir’s death. They both were finding it hard to believe what they had just done but were also trying to find the courage to stand by their decision.

As expected, Sikandar & his entire family did the honors of informing Khadija about Haider’s marriage & after Haider’s rejection of Saba, they were looking for a reason to call the engagement of Humna & Qadeer off too, but now they thought they got an upper-hand as they believed that Haider committed a mistake which will now force him to do everything told by them to make things right, but sadly, Haider’s reaction was not what they expected to be as he never really allowed them to dominate his mind & his thoughts. Sikandar & Shakira suggested that Haider should divorce Mishal because only then they will allow Qadeer to get married to Humna, which was actually quite sad. Qadeer did try to take a stand but he needs to understand that taking a stand also requires having an audible pitch too, Qadeer murmured & thought that his parents will lift the conditions that they set but he was mistaken. Khadija also demanded that Haider should sent Mishal away & divorce her because that way, she will be able to save Humna’s relation with Qadeer but it was wise of Haider to make her understand that she was mistaken because there was nothing that Haider’d do that will guarantee Humna’s happiness as he could see through Sikandar’s intentions.

Mishal took this entire marriage scene as an adventure & surprisingly, she seemed content & happy with what had transpired. She was new to all this but she didn’t mind getting herself comfortable with Haider’s lifestyle. She knew that everything that happened won’t allow her an easy entry into anyone’s life but she didn’t hold herself back from trying at least. Mishal could see that Haider was a man of his word & she found that quality of his to be quite charming. Mishal knew that she had to go back because she could see all the problems that Haider’s family was facing because of her, but she was hesitant because she dreaded returning to her old lifestyle, full of responsibilities & full of problems. Haider also believed that sending Mishal away will make things right but even he didn’t want her to go & luckily, what sealed the deal were the questions that the reporters asked which reminded Haider once again that Mishal wasn’t an acquaintance or she wasn’t just a friend, Mishal was his wife now & he had to do everything to protect her. Sadly, Haider’s marriage with Mishal put a dent on his political career & Asfand Sultan didn’t seem too appreciative of what Haider did, but I am sure Haider will make things work, but more than that I am interested to find out how Mishal & Haider will join hands to make their marriage work.

These three episodes were very very interesting because they were directed & edited really really well. I loved the acting of all the characters & have always felt that the way each & everyone acts makes it look like they are actually a family that comes together in good times or bad. However, I will add that I wasn’t a fan of Saba Qamar’s acting & styling in the talk show scene because she seemed quite scattered brained & her overall look was quite tacky but after that scene was over, she was back in her game & acted really really well & looked beautiful too. Zahid Ahmed definitely took the crown because he acted well in the scenes which involved a lot of cross talking. Also, I must say the girl playing the character of Saba has done such a wonderful job, she is always complementing the scenes with her unique expressions, I found it really cute that even though she was heart broken at the news of Haider’s marriage, she looked at Mishal with such appreciation & respect, haha! I must say the chemistry between Zahid Ahmed & Saba Qamar is a treat to watch & they both look amazing together. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these episodes of Besharam & this has become one of those dramas that I look forward to. It’s going to be a long long long wait until the next episode but never-mind, let’s discuss these episodes first. :)

Bhai – The End!

So Bhai finally ended and what a last episode it was! Shibli returned and when Ashraf confronts him, Ifrah shoots Ashraf and then Shibli and then herself.

Nah, just kidding.

Ebad returns and proves his innocence and sincerity and Saira asks Sufiyan for a divorce which he happily gives because now Khadija is married so she gets divorced too and all the lovebirds are reunited.

Nah, just kidding.

Ashraf is shot and dies and Ifrah rejoices at finally being freed of him forever. However, she and her mother continue to live in Ashraf’s house.

Nah, just kidding.

Shibli returns and Ashraf hunts him down and ‘presents’ him and a gun to Ifrah asking her to shoot him for he had caused her so much pain. Ifrah refuses saying the law should deal with him. Shibli manages to free himself and shoots Ashraf who ends up in the hospital. Ifrah then realizes how she can not live without Ashraf and cries and prays for him and he survives. And they live happily ever after.

Seriously, not kidding. That really did happen. I had predicted Ifrah and Ashraf being together in the end and even Shibli’s return and Ashraf being shot but the way the whole 20 minute episode played out was so unconvincing and unreal it was as if the cast and director and maybe even the writer had had enough of the drama themselves!

The pain and emotions that Ifrah seemed to be going through sitting and crying at the hospital praying that ‘Ashraf ko kuch nahin hona chahyay’ seemed to appear out of nowhere. Her reminiscing about the times when Ashraf tried to woo her before she married Hammad also seemed so out of place. It would have been a bit more convincing maybe if she thought of the moments he was gentle and kind to her after their marriage. The coverage of their time together after marriage was so little that I could not relate to her despair over Ashraf being hurt and possibly gone from her life. I could however relate to her mother’s rant about how they would be ‘sahara-less’ again for I had suspected all along that was maybe her primary reason for urging Ifrah to marry Ashraf haha!

Rabab and Khadija get married before the shootout and man what strange dressing I could not help noticing. That has remained the problem with Bhai, the strange interiors and although I understand a different way and standard of living is portrayed here I do feel the director could have portrayed all that minus the tasteless decoration of rooms and then the brides’ outfits.

Anyways, I am glad Bhai is finally over. What had started as an outrageous, even funny at times, yet interesting drama went spiralling down a dark dark alley and hit rock bottom. Then things begin to perk up with everyone’s lives being sorted again and then it is as if everyone got tired and threw in an ending which was meant to please the viewers but had there been less episodes dedicated to all the evil and sadness Ashraf wrought in his family’s lives and a few more on how he worked to build his relationship with Ifrah after marriage and how she recognized his efforts and begun to melt a little then the transformation of the shrieking crying Ifrah to the I-can’t-live-without-Ashraf but again crying Ifrah would have been a bit easier to digest.

Whether Ashraf deserved his happy ending or not – I leave you all to decide  How many of you watched the last episode? What did you think? Having the actors say a few words at the end was a nice and different way to end but sadly did not help in changing my opinion of the drama. Please do share your thoughts!

Tum Kon Piya – Episode 13

There was plenty of focus on Elma’s ‘maid status’ in the house in this episode. Sharafat Begum’s unstoppable rants and her failure to see her daughter-in-law as a living and breathing person who has another family too is getting annoying with every passing episode. Zarbab’s ‘attempts’ to take a stand for his wife continued to fall on deaf ears and he also showed those sides of his personality which went to show that even with all his niceness he is after all a part of this household in which there is no concept of caring for each other beyond a certain limit. Arif’s selfish and thankless attitude was also highlighted in this episode. Javeria’s re-entry in the house was shown in a brief scene but it went to show that she will be making an appearance every now and then to influence Zarbab. The change in Muzzafar Hassan was the only positive development in this episode but Ramish has decided to marry Sunbal even though he made it clear that he feels nothing for her. Sunbal’s attitude yet again was disappointing and somewhat confusing. In the last episode she said that Ramish’s mother had made it clear that he was in love with Sunbal but in this episode it seemed like she knew that was not the case. Unfortunately, this marriage is bound to take place or so it seems at this point.

Elma yet again was unable to make it to an important family function, this time it was more important than anything else she has missed so far. The fact that these situations have been shown so many times in the previous episodes as well did not make me feel for Elma’s character this time around too. She knows her mother-in-law well enough to know now that she will not allow her to leave the house for so many days therefore expecting something like this was wishful thinking on her part. Sharafat begum has conveniently stopped doing any housework at all therefore if Elma is sick or not at home then no one gets fed!!! A very typical situation indeed and probably something which is faced by every other married woman but definitely nothing new or enticing. Elma continues to be Allah mian ki gaye! Elma used to take care of everyone in her house too therefore this status is not new for her. The only big difference is that she used to do all this housework out of love before and she received love in return but now she does not get any appreciation for the work she does – like I said absolutely nothing new about this situation. Just like all the previous episodes it seemed odd that Elma could not even answer her sister’s call, call her back or message her to tell her she could not make it to the function. Instead, just like always an imagined conversation with Ramish was the only way for her to ‘vent out’!!

Zarbab’s behaviour towards Elma after Javeria left went to show what kind of a person he was. He likes Elma, cares about her but for him it was really important that his wife looked pretty and dressed up in front of his ex-girlfriend. At the same time when Elma fainted, he was genuinely worried for her. Zarbab’s character is nicely etched-out, he is not all black. He can be nice but he wasn’t raised in a way that he can care for other people beyond a certain point! The fact that there are different shades to this person’s personality make him better character than other zalim husbands we see in other dramas. Ali Abbas has impressed me with his acting right from the first episode. His dialogue delivery is very impressive and his acting is always effortless.

Ramish’s decision to get married to Sunbal was more like surrendering than anything else although even then it wasn’t a very convincing development in the story and I am still hoping that this marriage will not take place. Arif’s new job at Ramish’s office will only create further problems for Elma. The preview of the next episode however showed an entirely different scenario which has done-to-death written all over it but hopefully Zarbab will not start doubting his wife right away. He might however find out details about Ramish and Elma’s background story from other sources. What makes this certain track different is that Elma and Ramish never really had a relationship as such; all their conversations and meetings were not real, they were all imagined therefore the only truth here is that Ramish proposed to Elma and she refused the proposal. Arif might however twist the truth to make things complicated for Elma since he is jealous of her. Elma’s sister’s track got a lot more screen time tonight than it deserved. Ramish and Elma’s father’s relationship is heart warming; it is always good to see these two characters interacting with each other even when the context is not always cheerful.

This episode laid down the foundations for what is coming ahead and it was a relatively slow episode. The direction was top-notch as usual and just like every other episode there was plenty of repetition in some tracks, zero development in the characters except for Muzzafar Hassan and tons of clichés. Even with all these weaknesses Tum Kon Piya continues to give you something to look forward to, it can pass as a guilty pleasure which so far does not have any glaring flaws in the story. The writer has played it safe and the drama is directed well too.

I feel like I am onto something here. Like this whole Fahd-Mushq-Dabbu love story is just a secondary storyline in this drama but the main message is clear: do not rely on your mobiles to store numbers/addresses – always keep a directory/written back up! Always! From the moment Mushq’s father threw and broke her phone in anger and Fahd landed in Karachi and had his phone stolen (oh and both lovebirds did not know each other’s numbers by heart by the way for they relied only on the numbers saved in their phones) till now Dabbu’s phone being stolen and Striker’s being snatched it is as if had there been no mobile snatchers around – this love story would have reached its end far earlier!

Jokes besides, I watched these two episodes one after the other and although I grimaced when Mushq did her runner across the street at the sight of Fahd and then losing him, thinking oh God how many of these scenes will we have to endure before she finds him, next week’s episode’s preview shows that Mushq will be quite close to meeting Fahd and that is a relief.

The lingering looks, the constant thank yous, the ‘aap na hotay tau mera kia hota’ and the ‘bas aap khush raho Mushq ji’ – have begun. Okay, don’t hate me but somehow the Dabbu-Mushq scenes lacked I-don’t-know-what-but-there-was-something-missing factor! We all know Dabbu is angel personified but given Mushq’s luck with strangers, I would think she would be a bit wary of Dabbu. I liked how Mushq was gracious and not venting her frustrations out on Dabbu and when he took care of her when she was unwell was sweet. I know she is grateful there is someone who actually seems to care for her and she wants Dabbu to know it but her ‘poori duniya nay mujhay akela kar diya sirf ek aap par he tau yakeen hai’ and when she says ‘aap nay itna khayal rakha tau theek tau hona he tha’ and Dabbu’s ‘look’ when she says those lines seem to suggest he may, unconsciously begin to start reading more into them as Mushq also keeps uttering them!

Dabbu’s enthusiasm and positive attitude is truly mystifying. Without any idea of which part of Lahore Fahd lives in, he is strangely very confident they will be able to find him. Setting out on foot all day seems to be the plan of action and I really do not know for the life of me how that is supposed to help except maybe lose some weight which Mushq certainly does not need to do! I did say to myself ‘Lo jee’ at Mushq’s tantrum over the birthday scene but her apology the next morning and generally the way she is behaving with Dabbu showed that she was probably just very frustrated and needed to vent. I have to hand it to Dabbu how he takes everything in his stride and his only mission now in life is to get a smile on Mushq’s face.

Fahd’s wedding preparations are underway. I find the whole Butt Sb stepping up with biwi and beti to help Fahd and parjayee a bit too much to take in. How does ‘shaadi’ become the solution to all problems? Unwilling son or daughter forced and cajoled and threatened into a marriage and then when that marriage does not work out (surprise surprise) the parent ends up in the hospital with a heart attack. I mean, do yourselves a favour, spare yourself a trip to the hospital and NOT grasp an arranged marriage as the only solution? Isra’s claim however that she will be able to bring back the ‘old’ Fahd could probably be something that his mother believes but at this rate Isra seems to be the annoying tweety bird harping on and on and Fahd the sulky cat Sylvester!

I will take Fatima’s stance when she reviewed Dil Lagi’s mazaar scene and avoid commenting on the right or wrong of going to a mazaar. I was a bit surprised at Mushq’s dua though when she did not ask that Fahd be found but that whatever is best for her happens. Isra’s dua, if it comes true, sort of decides the fate of this drama already then for she will not give Fahd up easily. The shawl Mushq offers Isra seemed to have some sort of emotional sentiment attached to it – at least that was the impression I was given when she goes back in the room to fetch it and says to Dabbu that she could not leave it behind. But then why offer it to Isra and part with it? Will Fahd recognize it? The way his ears perked up when Isra said she met a couple from Karachi made it sound like she had announced a couple from Mars had arrived!

I am not sure what the message here is and if there really is one. The obedient daughter Zeba is going through a hell of sorts herself and the rebellious Mushq’s troubles are far from over so was it worth being obedient or taking a stand for your own desires and wishes? Although Nayaz is nice to Zeba but Baji’s negative presence and jibes seem to have Zeba upset all the time and now Baji has thrown in the ‘child’ factor making things worse. Zeba’s tears, Fahd’s angry sulky face, Mushq’s resigned, dejected face – sigh, enough already!

Seeing Fahd on the streets has given Mushq hope again and even though I am not a huge Sajal Ali fan I have to say she has managed to portray Mushq’s different emotions very well. The resigned and subdued Mushq seems to have woken up and is eager to find Fahad now that she knows he is somewhere near. Sundus Tariq as Isra is a bit too jolly and actually cringeworthy and I hope we will not have to see much of her before this drama ends. The mazaar scene did not make much of an impact on me and I have to admit part of the reason is that I caught up watching Dil Lagi yesterday and after Humayun Saeed and the way the mazaar scene was shot – this definitely could not surpass those scenes.

I know some of you may feel differently and that is totally okay but I did not enjoy these two episodes as much as I had anticipated. Next week’s preview looks promising though and I am looking forward to Mushq coming face to face with Fahd, I just hope it does happen next week though and not thrown in as the last scene. Ohkay so, these three episode of Zara Yaad Kar made a lot of progress in terms of the story & the character development. I do however feel that I found it to be that way because I watched these 3 episodes one after another, therefore I didn’t pay attention to the overall pace of each & every episode but I am dreading that it will get back to the slower side because I will be watching the episodes on weekly basis from now on. Having said that, I will say that I liked all three episodes because they took the story forward & gave us something to talk about.

Mahnoor is struggling deep within because she knows that everything that is happening with her is her own fault. She chose to shoo away the guy who loved her for the sake of a guy who doesn’t trust her enough to tell her what is happening in his life or what he is upto. Mahnoor has to be the most insensible girl ever because she drove herself into this deep pit & now has no one who can pull her out of it. She gambled with her life just because she ‘assumed’ that Waqar was the one who’ll make her happy while being completely oblivious of the fact that he didn’t even respect her let alone love her.

Gaiti & Waqar’s relation is nurturing because Waqar can now see that Gaiti is a potential politician & because of Gaiti, Waqar can get the authority & the power to empower the people of Umarkot. Also, Gaiti is trusting Waqar way more than she should, but then again, I find this to be a little glitch that just because Mehtab Deswali has fled, Gaiti has lost contact with her father & Mehtab has left her only daughter to deal with such serious stuff on her own & he has allowed Waqar to have a free-hand when it comes to his daughter. Also, where is Gaiti’s brother who made an appearance when Gaiti returned from America? I don’t believe that conservative guys like Mehtab & his son will leave the only female of their family in the lurch to figure things out on her own. At least, they should’ve shown that all this while Gaiti was in contact with her father & he was guiding her daughter, who for the first time, has stepped into the field of politics. I find it a little unrealistic that Mehtab isn’t worried about his daughter, whereas he was shown to be quite farsighted where he hired Waqar as Gaiti’s Urdu tutor because he knew that Gaiti needed to be fluent in Urdu in order to make an impression on the people of Umarkot, so now when she is actually with those people, Mehtab isn’t telling her what needs to be done & how she can leave a good impression on those people that will guarantee another win of their party in the next elections.

Honestly speaking, I do understand all the feelings Waqar has for the people of Umarkot & how he gets emotional when he talks about their helplessness & how they have always been fooled by the politicians, but I feel all his feelings would’ve made far more impact if he himself would’ve been an honest & sincere person. The way Waqar’s character was introduced & the impression he has left so far by playing with the feelings of Mahnoor & Gaiti doesn’t really make him look like someone who can feel for someone without expecting something in return. There’s an entire contrast in his personality when it comes to how conniving he is in his personal life & how selfless he becomes when it comes to the people of Umarkot, but still his cunning side takes the lead & curbs the niceness he displays every now & then. Also, I find it amusing that Waqar never did anything for the people of Umarkot on his own, he just chose to educate himself & make a life for himself in a city, but now when he has landed an opportunity to be in contact with the family of politicians, he doesn’t mind shedding a tear or two to show how much love he holds for his town & its people.

It is actually quite disturbing that Waqar doesn’t even understand the difficulties Mahnoor is facing & he doesn’t partially hold himself responsible for instigating the divorce between Mahnoor & Haadi. Mahnoor has unfortunately understood that the love she thought Waqar had for her doesn’t exist & she left everything, her shelter, her security blanket, her safety net for a guy like him who doesn’t even love her to begin with. The way she is clinging onto Haadi now & the way she is finding it hard to move on goes to show that she is left with nothing but deep regret with her decisions. The conversations between Haadi & Mahnoor were done well, they showed the transitions both of them have made & the different impact that their divorce has left on them both. Where Mahnoor is shattered emotionally, Haadi is in peace. Where Mahnoor is feeling regret, Haadi is content as he knows that he has nothing to lose now. This divorce has matured Haadi mentally & emotionally whereas it has made Mahnoor even more immature because the way she is not accepting the fact that Haadi has moved on goes to show that she still has a glimmer of hope in her heart that may be things will work out between them once again. Mahnoor knows that Haadi loved her truly therefore she is still expecting him to showcase that love & pull her out of her misery that she has inflicted upon herself.

Uzma on her own is dealing with the self-created stuff. I do understand that she is a good & selfless soul but the way she is dealing with her equation with Haadi isn’t sparking an interest & seems a bit forced actually. Uzma’s explanation behind her brave act of writing a love letter to a married man didn’t justify anything. Uzma on her own thought that she was doing a favor to both Mahnoor & Haadi by writing a love letter to Haadi, thinking that it will strengthen their relationship which sounded nothing but a lie. I fail to understand how can anyone be so lifeless to actually sit & think about someone else’s love life to such an extent that confessing their love seems like a good idea to them. It is so obvious that even Uzma knows that Haadi’s divorce means he is free to think about her, therefore she is trying to maintain a distance which seems nothing but another attempt of grabbing his attention. I do like Uzma’s character but somehow I am unable to accept her seedha-pan.

Overall, these three episodes were written & directed well. I must say I loved Sana Javed’s acting the most in these episodes, where she made sure to convey the storm that has overtaken Mahnoor’s mind & heart. Each & every expression told a tale of how shattered & regretful Mahnoor was but she was putting up an act to show her mother that she was strong enough to deal with her pain gracefully. Zahid Ahmed acted really well too & the thing that I noticed & loved the most was the change of body language of all the characters/actors after the divorce took place, where Haadi looked relaxed, Mahnoor looked tensed & Uzma looked equally uncomfortable. All the actors have done a superb job & yes, there were quite a few conversations/dialogues that hit home for me. I enjoyed watching these three episodes, so please tell me how’d you like them by sharing your thoughts too.

Junaid Khan On Star Iftaar with Sarmad Khoosat

Junaid Khan, in the words of Sarmad Khoosat, one of the most successful cross overs from the music industry to the TV world, was invited to the show.

Junaid Khan admitted out loud that when it comes to food, he is a true Lahori – khana baghair lihaaz kiye. He did say hat given his work requirements, he is careful about his diet now. He spoke fondly of his mother who loves to spoil him and never refuses to his farmaishain.

Sarmad Khoosat asked him about his music band, Call, which has produced some awesome songs in the past. Junaid revealed that he took a break from Call to pursue a career in acting, but now they are back together. His other band mates are busy in their respective fields, like Zulfi has taken over Nescafe Basement. Speaking of Nescafe Basement, I confess I am a hugeee fan of Zulfi’s work and the music produced in Nescafe Basement. The latest season was phenomenal!! I am sorry to get off topic, but I just had to talk about it! :P

Junaid Khan rightly pointed out that because of digital media, the scene of music has changed drastically. In Pakistan, concerts died down because of security concerns, but now, the popularity of concerts is returning.

TToday, Sarmad prepared Pot roasted chicken coupled with a refreshing apricot drink.

Tum Yaad Aye – Doll Nay Maari Laat! – Episode 19

This drama at times seems so normal, run of the mill and you sit back comfortably as if driving down a traffic less road and then a twist comes up like a speed breaker and jolts you out of your reverie. We were left wondering last week what all the fuss about Mehtaab leaving her first husband for Yusuf Kamdar was all about and although I have to admit I have come out none the wiser at the end of this episode, Zainy seems to have taken matters into her own hands and ended up where she wanted to be all along.

Phuppo and Co arrive at Yusuf Kamdar’s house to ‘formally’ ask for Zainy’s hand in marriage. Although with Ahmer walking in rolling up his sleeves phadda style seemed hardly polite! As expected, Mehtaab is indignant they would have the nerve to show up and make such a demand and asks them to leave. I was not surprised to see Zainy come back and say she is ready to leave with Ahmer but the fact that she had already done the nikkah with him had me taken aback. Appears I was not the only one for even Taayi and Phuppo were not aware of this development. It was sad to see how Zainy was all spite and venom when she left her home. I found it odd how Sherry missed out on all the hungama and showed up only after Zainy had left.

It was a relief to see Yusuf and Sherry not blame Mehtab for Zainy’s actions. Nigar however is a different story and all I could hear beneath her rants was ‘I told you so’ and then she delivered the beti baji ki bhaagi hai tau roag hum kyun paalein? which just further proved how she had never accepted Zainy as one of them. I liked Sherry’s conversation with Nigar, how he was not just pining for a lost love but was genuinely upset that Zainy had turned her back on them and walked out on them when they had always considered her as one of their own. ‘She was our doll. Uss ko dekh kar hum jeetay thay, who hasti thi tau hum hastay thay, takleef ussay hoti thi tau hum rotay thay’. Well, doll nay laat maar di and did not think anything of all the people she hurt in the process. I watched this episode just before I left to pick the kids from school and as I sat parked outside school I glimpsed upon my daughter’s library book lying in the car ‘ Naughty Amelia Jane’ and I thought why hello Zainy what are you doing here?!

I have mixed feelings about Mehtaab and Yusuf Kamdar. In the constant ping pong of emotions between ‘Ahmer loves Zainy, Ahmer loves Zainy not’ I have gotten all confused myself keeping track of when exactly Mehtaab opposed this relationship and when she herself okayed it. I did feel though that after Zainy’s suicide attempt and Ahmer’s coldness, Mehtaab was right to take matters in her own hands for being a parent you need to draw the line between giving into your child’s demands and knowing when something is clearly not right for them and step up. If marriage really was the only solution then I would not question it except that it really should not have been with Sherry. Mehtaab may have felt he was the best choice for Zainy but this was really too close to home. Literally. Whatever Mehtaab feared, did happen and although Sherry and Yusuf are being very supportive and are treating her with the relation they have with her and not as Zainy’s mother, it could still have gone all horribly wrong. Mehtaab herself feels ashamed by Zainy’s actions and it was sad to see her ask for Sherry’s forgiveness.

Much as I find Zainy bratty, I can not help but laugh and even approve of how she deals with Novera. She is seriously one hell of an annoying friend squirming her way into Zainy’s family. On another note, did anyone else find the dress Nigar was holding for Zainy’s wedding much nicer than the one Zainy ended up wearing? Mehtaab’s comment about support system seemed very odd to me but then there are things in this drama with regards to relationships and customs that seem odd so will let it go but what was the conversation between Phuppo and Taayi all about regarding valima expenses? Why was Mehtaab expected to pay for the valima anyway? Taayi is seriously shameless and Phuppo seems to be the only sane one amongst the lot.

I found Zainy’s ‘sharam karo who baray hain’ and ‘Sherry bhai ka kia kasoor’ very lame I am sorry to say after she all but spat on the people who had given her nothing but unconditional love all her life. It is not her parents’ fault that they could not keep up with her and Ahmer’s on and off confused romance and if she really had decided to walk out then the way it was staged was tasteless.

I was so glad Sherry asked Mehtaab the question that had been burning in my mind too – was there any truth to the accusations Zainy had hurled at Mehtaab and Yusuf? Mehtaab’s answer did not enlighten me however – did anyone else make more sense out of it? Please do share if you did. I did find it funny though when she said that her and Yusuf’s personalities were not the sort that people would give their lives over. Haha.When Mehtaab rose from her bed with her beehive higher than ever I thought she was going back to work but she goes to Zainy’s college to get a glimpse of her daughter. I like how Yusuf knew where she had been and comforted her in the end.

I found myself watching Nigar’s reactions the most in this episode. Erum Akhtar’s acting was spot on when she spoke to Sherry and her expressions aptly switched from being pained to see her brother hurt and anger at Zainy’s shallowness and the underlying ‘I told you so’. I rarely comment on any individual’s acting in this drama because each actor and actress fits so well into their characters that I really do see beyond the actors and believe it is the characters on screen. Next week’s preview shows trouble brewing between Ahmer and Zainy (that was quick?!) and Zainy missing her family. Wonder if Novera will make her move now? I was very tempted to count the number of times the word ‘talaq’ was used in this episode to make the viewers understand the gravity of the situation! This is not the first time that Sameera Fazal has used this word and the act itself like it is going out of fashion. Sadly, Mann Mayal has come to a point where the writer has to resort to deaths, heart attacks and divorces in order to stir some emotions in the viewers. The way beti ke masail and divorce was used to make this episode over-dramatic was just plain sickening. This episode was regressive to say the least!

Mannu’s reaction to this recent development was given more screen time than it deserved. The viewers have been watching Mannu suffer for weeks now, showing everything that was shown today was the final nail in the coffin. I am sure there are many viewers out there who will feel for bechari Mannu because the writer is bent on proving that staying married to a monster like Mikael is much better than being DIVORCED!!!! Talk about making the most of the evils (yes evil) that exist in our society! This recent development in the story might entice some viewers but after watching tonight’s episode I was not only disappointed even more but actually quite upset. It is sad that the writers who are considered the best in our industry bank on ‘talaq’ so much! If PEMRA wants to take notice of something, they should take notice of the way this word and action is exploited in our dramas in order to play with the emotions of people and to make the heroines even more becharis! Although Mannu is anything but enlightened or even sensible but even then it was sad to see her react like she just suffered a huge loss. Those parents who had been giving her the option of coming back home, who have been so supportive of her are suddenly in a situation that they had to ask their daughter’s ex-boyfriend to give her ‘refuge’!!! Mannu’s becharapan in tonight’s episode was like a slap on the face of all those girls out there who willingly take divorce from husbands like Mikael to save their sanity and for the better future of their kids. This drama has sent out a lot of wrong messages but this recent development had to be the most terrible message an educated person can give to the public. Watching our writers endorse such clichés and social evils is really really upsetting.

Mannu was clearly disturbed by the fact that Salahuddin was in love with Jeena. She also never really loved her husband, it was a commitment she was fulfilling but even then the end of this marriage was shown like she had lost someone precious. Jeena’s desperation is growing with every passing episode and honestly speaking with this episode I have lost all interest in this drama. Till the last episode it was a comedy of errors but this episode was truly upsetting not because I feel for Mannu but I feel for all those writers, producers, directors and actors who think they are doing anyone a favour by showing something like this. Betiyan bojh nahi hoti – try putting that message forward for a change!

I am not looking forward to tuning into the next episode of Mann Mayal but unfortunately I have been assigned the duty of reviewing this drama till the end therefore I will continue reviewing it but I am done with watching and reviewing dramas written by Samira Fazal no matter how ‘enticing’ they might appear to be…after this episode, that is the least I can do! I am a woman and I feel truly offended by the message this drama is putting forward for all the women out there.

Cybil Chaudhry On Star Iftar With Sarmad Khoosat

Today, Sarmad Khoosat invited model Cybil Chaudhry to the show.

Cybil revealed that she was born in Karachi and raised in Lahore before she moved to America. She is not fluent in Urdu because she never formally learned Urdu. Her mother is German so she learned German and French. Cybil said that people have some preconceived notions about her and they can’t imagine her in the kitchen, cooking for her family, but they will be surprised to know that Cybil is actually very good at cooking and she enjoys cooking for her kids.

Cybil made her acting debut with drama serial, Firaaq on HumTV. She wants to act, but at the moment, there are no projects in the pipeline.

PPeople following the show would know that everyday Sarmad asks his guests, “Agar aap insaan nahe hote aur koi khane ki cheez hote tou kia hote?” I was actually very surprised when Cybil named broccoli! Really? :P

Like it was revealed earlier, Ahmed Ali Butt and Ali Safina had issues with the nominations of Lux Style Awards 2016. Ahmed Ali Butt requested his name to be moved from the category of Best Actor to Best Supporting Actor while Ali Safina, who was nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actor, wanted his nomination removed, and he pointed out that he played the main character in the movie, Jalaibee.

In compliance with Ahmed Ali Butt’s request, his name has been moved to the category of Best Supporting Actor. Now, his name in the Best Actor category has been replaced with Danish Taimoor for his performance in the film Wrong No.

Ali Safina’s nomination, however, hasn’t been revised.

Sonia Hussain is an extremely talented actress who has come a long way. With dramas like Marasim and Nazo to her credit, she is a versatile actress who is not afraid of taking risks.

Recently, in an interview with Express Tribune, Sonia Hussain talked about her career and upcoming ventures.

“I made my debut with a project called Don’t Jealous. Director Ali Sade pushed me to partake in it. I went to audition for a news reporter’s job for a TV channel, and I don’t know whether it’s unfortunate or fortunate that I didn’t get the job. Ali spotted me at the audition.I played a drug-addicted child, and very rarely do actors get such difficult roles for their first projects. I find myself lucky to have always been part of substantial projects.”

“I never wanted to become an actor to begin with. But now, my roots lie in TV and it will always remain very dear to me. When I was offered Moor, I felt the connection and the desire to be a part of that film.”

She will be seen in Imran Malik’s upcoming film (the title has not been revealed). “I sign a project if the director, role and the script click with me and I find them worth it; be it film or television. It’s the quality of the content that matters the most. I’m playing the role of a journalist and really enjoying it. She’s very similar to who I am in real life. It’s basically a love story that also shows bits of action and comedy.”

Drama serial Nazo was very different from what we usually see on TV. “Many believe such content is inappropriate to be telecast on TV, but if a woman can be slapped on screen, why can’t she be empowered? We can’t restrict ourselves; we need to accept all sorts of people that are part of the society. We are not here to win awards, but we are here to create an impact on the audiences.”

Bilal Khan is a Pakistani singer with a great fan following. His most well-liked song is Bachana. He was also associated with Coke Studio, and he has also sung OSTs of dramas like Mata e Jaan Hai Tu and Roshan Sitara.

We are not seeing him much these days, but in a recent interview with Dawn Images, Bilal Khan talked about what he’s been up to. “I was in the U.S. for the past few years, getting life experiences, travelling and writing songs. Along the way, I have released a few rough versions of new songs with videos (Bijliyaan), some cover songs (an Urdu cover of a Coldplay number), played a lot of shows in UK, U.S. and Canada and just spent a ton of time trying to hone my songwriting chops.”

“I have been working on music a lot. Although, it’s not obvious right now but I feel it will all make sense one day.”

“I met John Mayer in the U.S. and saw him perform up close — he was my music hero while growing up. It was a very inspiring experience. I also saw Adele at O2 recently in London. Again, it’s one of those experiences, which has really affected me. I’ve jammed with many musicians in the west and I think it has expanded my abilities.”

“I’ve also heard a lot of new music. I’ve really explored my capabilities as a performer too. I have experimented with new gear like a loop pedal and drum machine. Staying away from Pakistan also made me miss home a lot, so I got into old Pakistani and Indian songs.”

“It takes a lot of discipline to disconnect. It’s so easy to squint your eyes, pout and post a selfie on Instagram with a cool caption and the right filter. It’s infinitely harder to write a song that captures how you feel. Playing the ‘likes’ game can be temporarily satisfying but it doesn’t hold much value in the real world, and takes away my focus.

“I think I have gained experiences I only saw in movies and I’ve collected new stories and themes that will definitely come out in my songs. Another thing that I have really learnt to do is to work on my ability to disconnect from my phone and the online world. I don’t post as much on social media.”

“I have nothing against social media, in fact I think I was one of the first musicians in Pakistan to use YouTube and set up a Facebook fan page. However, for me it has always been about making the best music I can, first. I want people to remember me by saying something like ‘I love your song, it made my day’ rather than ‘Oh wow, you have a million followers on Facebook’.

Talking about his upcoming songs, “I wish I could give an exact date. There are times when I record something and I’m like ‘I want to release this so bad right now’! But I have to think holistically and not put out something that’s not finished. I’m not going to make cliché statements either like ‘It’s coming out on Eid’. I’ll just drop it all together, when it’s ready, without hyping or lining up a release.”

“I know it’s sometime soon. I’m in a very good creative zone right now and I don’t know how long it will last. I have faith that taking all this time to make the new songs will be worth it. And then I can go do the ‘pop star’ thing when its time.”

The Best On-Screen Characters

A drama needs a strong storyline and well etched-out characters in order to stand out in the crowd. Also, the right cast which is given the task of translating these characters on screen makes a huge difference too. Sometimes a character which is rather simple becomes extraordinary because the actor playing the role brings out the best in his or her character. At other times the acting skills might not be top-notch all the time but the character is written so well that the viewers find it easy to connect to it even if the dialogue delivery or body language does not fit the bill every now and then.

Nowadays many of the writers bank on shortcuts to make their characters attractive. The bechari aurat is the easiest and most commonly used shortcut. Black and white characters are also considered an easy way to gain the sympathies of the viewers or to make them hate a character. What makes an on-screen character truly impressive is firstly when it is not clichéd, secondly it is not one-dimensional and most importantly the viewers should be able to relate to the character. Whether the character is good, bad or grey the motives and personality traits of the character should not confuse the viewers. If a character is unpredictable then that is great but if they do something which is completely opposite to their main personality traits which define that character then the viewers lose interest and feel frustrated.

Out of all the plays I am currently following, here is the list of the characters which can easily be termed as the best!

Sitara from Mein Sitara

Mein Sitara is the story of a young girl who is born in a poor family but fate has something completely different planned for her future. Sitara’s character was intriguing and appealing right from the first episode. Her own personality and the relationship she shared with all the other characters has been very well defined from the beginning. Even as a child Sitara was not just another child, she was a misfit in her family and also very stubborn. The reason why Sitara’s character is on top of this list is that it is a unique character and it is one of those rare characters whose journey is shown to the viewers from childhood therefore the viewers understand her character even more. You don’t get to hear how Sitara’s childhood was but you see it on screen. The actress who played the young Sitara was just as phenomenal as Saba Qamar as Sitara.

This character holds your attention and makes you look forward to more because it is etched-out impeccably and has been translated on-screen faultlessly. Sitara’s journey and her character both are enthralling.

Imtiaz from Udaari

Imtiaz’s character is all black but the reason why it is in this list is that it is the perfect portrayal of a very ugly face of not just our society but of every such pedophile. Imtiaz’s character helps people understand the mindset behind such heinous crimes and also gives all the right messages to the parents and anyone involved. Firstly, this character shows that a pedophile isn’t always someone who has a bad reputation. Imtiaz has a great reputation, he is respected by all and trusted by everyone too including his wife. Also, it shows how these people use rewards to gain the trust of children and use intimidating tactics after committing the crime to frighten children.

Ahsan Khan has been beyond brilliant as Imtiaz. He makes you forget every other character he has played till date because he owns this character. He said in an interview that he wanted to kill Imtiaz while reading the script but he decided to do this role because he knew it would be noticed.

Sheedan from Udaari

Sheedan is a breath of fresh air, not because she is funny and loud but because she is self-reliant! There are hardly any women in our dramas who are as independent and strong as Sheedan is. Sheedan relied on her husband for emotional needs only, other than that she can make important decisions, earn money and protect her kids all on her own. Bushra Ansari has proved that she was the perfect choice for playing this character.

Sheedan is also a role-model as a mother – she believed her daughter and took a stand for her even when the odds were against her. Sheedan is not modern or educated, sometimes she even lacks basic manners but in many ways she is more ‘enlightened’ than many other modern mothers we see in our dramas very often. Bushra Ansari has nailed this character not only because she is a gifted actress but also because she sings very beautifully too.

Mohid and Anmol’s mothers from Dil Lagi

Saba Hameed is a versatile actress who always manages to give her best performance in every drama. She also has her own style in every drama which somehow shows her ‘interpretation’ of the character she is performing. Mohid’s mother can be very unreasonable at times but whatever she does, she does it because she wants to protect her children. She is the perfect example of a strong woman who thinks that a woman does not need a man to live a happy life. The way her relationship with her daughter-in-law has been shown is also another reason why she is one of my favorite characters right now; although she clearly has issues with Anmol yet she also has a life!!! She is not shown conspiring all the time to break this marriage which is definitely brand new!! Mohid’s mother is not perfect, she has her flaws but her character is still one-of-a-kind!

Asma Abbas is playing the character of Anmol’s mother in drama serial Dil Lagi. She is also a remarkable actress who adds a special touch to all the characters she plays. She plays the role of a mother who is somewhat conventional but she has raised two very unconventional and outspoken daughters. Instead of letting these daughters have their way all the time, she knows when to put her foot down. She tells Anmol right from wrong not because she is afraid of what people will say but because she wants the best for her daughters. Her character stands out because generally the mothers in our dramas play second fiddle to the fathers or are completely helpless when they have strong headed daughters.

Ramish from Tum Kon Piya

Drama Serial Tum Kon Piya is definitely not in the same league as the rest of the dramas on the list but so far it has been a decent watch. Imran Abbas is playing the character of Ramish – a character which stands out in a family of stereotypes. Ramish knows how to take a stand for himself and he also believes in loving unconditionally. There are times when Imran Abbas’ acting is not up to the mark but on the whole he is well-suited for this role and the writer deserves credit for creating a levelheaded character which the viewers can relate to.

This episode was picture perfect in every way, it served the purpose of causing awareness about the issue this drama deals with in a very clear manner and at the same time Meeran’s story definitely proved to be a good ‘distraction’. The fact that the developments in Meeran’s track were very positive kept this episode from becoming too dark and depressing. The writer of this drama Farhat Ishtiaq deserves due credit for covering everything in the speech which was delivered by Munira at the conference. Addressing such a sensitive topic is not an easy task but the team of Udaari has managed to accomplish this task brilliantly so far. I am certain that every parent out there no matter how educated, enlightened and careful they already are is going to benefit from watching this drama. It is true sometimes parents do tend to ignore the signs which Zebu is showing right now because like Munira said in her speech they trust the person who might be involved in such a crime too much and at other times even when they find out there isn’t much they can do about it because the pedophile might be a very close family member. This opening speech needs to be heard by every parent out there over and over again.

The scenes covering Zebu’s mental state and the way Imtiaz kept on employing pressure tactics to make sure she stayed quiet were yet again chilling but very apt in showing how a wicked person like him would act in such a situation. Imtiaz obviously did not think that Zebu would react in this way, he probably expected her to start acting normal after a few days and now that things are not going according to his plan, he is getting more and more frustrated. The acting by both the actors involved in these scenes – Ahsan Khan and the child star – was so impressive that you could not help but feel everything that Zebu was going through in all these scenes and all that was going through this evil person’s head while he tried to pressurize Zebu into giving up. Sajida has absolutely no idea why Zebu is no longer the person she used to be, Imtiaz kept on telling her it was because of the fever and he continued showering them both with gifts therefore she did not pause for a second to think that Imtiaz might have harmed her daughter in some way. Sajida is naive and gullible and Imtiaz is too clever therefore this whole situation is very realistic and might prove to be a wake-up call for many!

Meeran’s track got just as much screen time as Zebu’s which was much-needed. Watching Meeran grow as a singer and the change in Arsh’s attitude was definitely something which put a smile on my face. Meeran is finally friends with these people who are very different from her, she is catching up fast and has a new found confidence. The on screen chemistry between Urwa Hocane and Farhan Saeed made their scenes a treat to watch. The only thing I missed was the interaction between Meeran and Sheedan. Sheedan continued to make herself ‘useful’ in this episode! I love the way the differences in the lifestyles of these people have been shown. Sheedan is not used to a life of luxury, she likes to keep herself busy doing something. Meeran too is used to getting up early in the morning and starting what she is supposed to do. Bushra Ansari owns her role as Sheedan.

The preview of the next episode showed Arsh and the band making it to the final competition. Will Meeran’s blooper put their career at stake? I am also waiting to find out when Sajida will really find out what has happened to Zebu and what she is going to do about it. Right now this little child is putting up more of a fight than Rameen did in Chup Raho therefore kudos to her character. The director Mohammad Ehteshamuddin has directed this play brilliantly by keeping the sensitivities of this issue in mind. All the actors have breathed life into their respective characters but Ahsan Khan is the one who took the biggest risk here and has definitely done a great job of making people hate his character. I would also like to thank the producers of this drama for talking about a topic which we most often sweep under the carpet.

Mehreen Jabbar’s much anticipated film, Dobara Phir Se was expected to come out on Eid ul Fitr, but in a recent interview with Express Tribune, Mehreen Jabbar shared that the film is in the post-production stage.

“We are planning to release it now in August, but are yet to make an official announcement. Eid release dates had never been announced in the first place. The post-production is still in progress.”

Usually, filmmakers are very enthusiastic when it comes to promoting their films (remember the promotion of Ho Mann Jahan?) but we haven’t seen promotional campaigns of Dobara Phir Se. Mehreen Jabbar shared, “The promotions will commence towards the end of the month and we are hoping to create a good buzz around the film. Which film-maker wouldn’t want his/her film to succeed commercially? I, along with the cast, the film crew and the producers would want DBS to be appreciated, and do really well.”

According to Mehreen Jabbar, the film is about relationships, friendships and finding one’s way in life.

Atiqa Odho is also part of the cast and she is playing the role of a mother and mother in law. She praised Mehreen Jabbar for keeping things simple and real. “Mehreen is not driven by commercial cinema. She likes to show the story the way she wants to tell it, without adding unnecessary masala. She likes to keep the flavour intact by depicting reality-based situations … there are real life scenarios sans exaggeration.”

While everyone in the industry is going on and on about the ‘revival of Pakistani cinema’ , Atiqa Odho is not very happy with this so-called revival. “It’s a sad state of affairs and I am certainly not proud to say that a so-called ‘cinema revival’ has taken place. In India, film-making is a massive industry supporting the household of every individual associated with it. This is a trade and the government needs to promote it.”

Urwa and Mawra Hocane’s brother, Ins-e-Yazdan is making his acting debut with drama serial, Udaari on HumTv.

In an interview with Dawn Images, Ins-eYazdan shared, “I had a great time on sets and really got to see whats it like to be on the other side of the screen.”

“Script reading sessions with my cast and the director did help me a lot. I feel extremely lucky to have gotten to work with a wonderful team that i am learning from, everyday.”

He has recently given his CA exams, and setting foot in this industry is a decision that he made on his own without his sisters’ influence. “I am doing this regardless of what my sisters have chosen as their careers. I am truly proud of them but this experience for me was more about learning something new and having something interesting and different to do during my holidays after my CA exams. I have time until I have to make any serious decisions about my future plans.”

He revealed that he will be playing the character of Ejaz.

Adnan Sarwar On Star Iftar With Sarmad Khoosat

From medicine to formula racing to music to acting – Adnan Sarwar has done it all. Today, Sarmad Khoosat invited this multi-talented man who is not afraid of taking risks.

Adnan Sarwar believes that a person should not limit himself to one field or profession because centuries back, the people that made a difference did not stick to one field, like, Michelangelo, who was an artist, poet, sculptor, architect and engineer. Adnan Sarwar is an ambitious man who believes that entertainment should not be the sole purpose of cinema and that cinema should be seen as a powerful medium of change.

He talked about his claim to fame film, Shah, and revealed that the budget for the film was very limited because of which some flaws are evident on the big screen. I have to applaud his honesty because rarely have I ever seen a filmmaker point out the flaws in his own film! In spite of the low budget, Shah clicked with the masses and that’s solely because of the good intentions behind the movie and the dedication of the team. Adnan Sarwar is pleased with what Shah was able to achieve because through this film, he started a scholarship programme for the children of Liyari and also raised funds for students of NUST. All of this goes to show that Adnan Sarwar’s plans for his future projects are very different from those of producers that want to make commercially successful movies.

Today, Sarmad prepared Lamb Chops with a refreshing drink, Cucumber Cooler. All through the episode, Sarmad kept asking Adnan about the nutritional value of the ingredients being used, but that didn’t really bore me. I enjoyed this episode because even though Sarmad and Adnan haven’t worked together on a project (at least not that I know of), they seemed to be good friends and like Juggan, Adnan Sarwar was pretty comfortable in the kitchen.

I really admire how humble Sarmad Khoosat is. Here’s the man behind blockbuster Humsafar, but the fame hasn’t gone to his head. He is very well-spoken and so far, I enjoy watching this show.

Juggan Kazim On Star Iftar With Sarmad Khoosat

This time, Sarmad Khoosat was pleased to invite the ever-vivacious Juggan Kazim to the show. Sarmad Khoosat said that he admires Juggan’s jolly personality and the way she always stays happy. ‘‘Kabhi kabhaar zara behki behki baatain karti hain lekin yeh bhi in ki shakhsiat ka khoobsurat hissa hai.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and I think the credit goes to Juggan! She called Sarmad Khoosat and herself, ‘neem-pagal’. ”Dunya kay sabse achay log zara say crack hain.”

Juggan definitely took over the show, and I say that in a positive way, because the other guests we have seen on this show seemed a bit uncomfortable in the kitchen, but it was definitely not the case this time. Juggan did most of the cooking and most of the talking and I really enjoyed it.

Sarmad Khoosat asked her about Juggan’s Pret Collection. Juggan revealed that she actually wanted to open her own restaurant and had no plans of launching her own clothes range until she was approached by this person she did her first internship with back when she was 17. They partnered up for this and so we have Juggan’s Pret Collection.

When asked about what disturbs her the most, Juggan spoke about child labour, and also expressed disgust at the way families scoff at the house help. ”Charity begins at home. Apne liay 50 hazaar ka jora lena hai lekin ghar mein kaam karne wali ko 500 ka jora detay huay bhi jaan jati hai.”

Sarmad Khoosat asked Juggan about her break from acting and she revealed that she has a lot on her plate at the moment; she has her own morning show and now with her Pret Collection, she’s busier than ever.

Dil Lagi – Episode 13

“Jub koi acha lagta hai tu us ka bura bhi acha hi lagta hai. Mohabbat andhi nahi faragh dil hoti hai, aaib dekhti hai magar nazar andaz kar deti hai!” After watching this episode of Dil Lagi I don’t have the words to praise Nadeem Baig’s direction in particular and Faiza Iftikhar’s script which deserved to be directed with such dedication. This play is a visual treat; the sets, the clothes which the actors wear, the camera work and the picture quality especially in this episode was simply flawless! All the beautiful colors in the background, on the rooftops, those which the actors wear are definitely a deliberate attempt to make this drama visually pleasing and the director has definitely succeeded in doing so. Having said that I must add that the direction and camerawork alone cannot save the day if the script lacks depth and meaning. Like many other scripts written by Faiza Iftikhar, this one too has plenty of situations and surprises in store which are not over-dramatic but truly impactful! It is good to know that there are directors and writers out there who realize that we expect more from them than a stellar cast and beautiful locations. This episode had a few scenes which could qualify as somewhat clichéd but the bits which were anything but clichéd like always managed to stand out more than the dialogues uttered by Anmol’s mother in this episode especially because the context is completely different from what we see normally in dramas.

Mohid’s character is turning out to be very balanced and likeable. Unlike Anmol he believes in soul-searching. He knows that Anmol lied about her love affair with Fareed even then he does not judge her primarily because he loves her. When Anmol questions him about his priorities he pauses to think about what she said and in the morning he also pleads Sabiha’s case in front of his mother. Also, although he has been brought up by a mother who holds him very dear but he does not have an inflated ego. There was a time when Mohid thought it was alright to do whatever he needed to do in order to get what he wanted but Anmol has taught him many things which he would not have learned otherwise. Anmol, of course does not believe in practicing what she preaches. The character development has been convincing and has made this character more appealing. Hamayun Saeed is very convincing in this role, he has made Mohid’s conviction in his love for Anmol very relatable.

Although Anmol is still as stubborn as she was in the first episode but there are times when she has to be slightly flexible. My most favorite part of this episode was when Anmol decided to free Mohid’s pigeons! I could totally see that coming when Mohid’s mother mentioned how dear these pigeons were to him even then I was left wondering if Anmol would have the guts to take such a step. Now the question is whether these pigeons really want to be free?? Or do they love Mohid so much that they will return!! I am looking forward to Anmol’s reaction and the conversation between Mohid and Anmol in the next episode already! This was one of the many scenes in tonight’s episode which was beautifully shot. The expressions on Anmol’s face said more than any words could!

Tonight both the mothers in the drama decided to take charge at the same time! After Anmol’s mother made her promise that she will not brainwash Sabiha to go against her mother’s wishes, Mohid’s mother made sure that her bahu took care of her son. Anmol felt helpless and decided to do something that would make Mohid upset. The conversation between Mohid’s mother and Dastagir in tonight’s episode went to show that Mohid wasn’t really the rough and tough person he appears to be. It also showed that Mohid was taking payments from people who had rented properties owned by them and wasn’t doing anything unlawful.

“Mohabbat nahi ho sakti koshish karne se aur na karwaye ja sakti hai. Yeh tu wahi ki tarah hoti hai, Aasman se utrti hai kub kis se kahan kese ho jaye, yeh koi nahi janta.” Mishaal and Dastagir’s brief scene together made this episode complete. It is truly refreshing to watch a drama in which all the characters get the screen time they deserve and their stories are being taken forward gradually. Mariam Ansari is doing complete justice to her role and Imran Ashraf is adorable as Dastagir. The conversation between Mohid and Dastagir was also beautifully written, it was definitely one of those scenes that deserve to be watched over and over again! There was a major development in Sabiha’s track in this episode too. It remains to be seen how her mother reacts to this latest development.

I must say that Dil Lagi is much more entertaining now that Anmol is not getting her way! Loved the expressions on her face when she ran to the rooftop to see how Mohid would react when he doesn’t find his pigeons there! Can’t wait to see what happens next. Like every other episode of Dil Lagi this one too had some remarkable dialogues and beautiful conversations to its credit which stay with you long after you’re done watching the show. The director Nadeem Baig has turned this drama into a masterpiece by details which we rarely get to see in dramas. The person in charge of editing has also done his job really well. Anmol and Mohid’s story is getting more interesting with every episode. At this point Mohid is way ahead of the game because he is not focusing on scoring points!

According To Naseeruddin Shah, Pakistani Actors Are Dying To Come To India

Naseeruddin Shah is a veteran Indian actor who has also appeared in Pakistani film, Shoaib Mansoor’s Khuda Kay Liye.

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Naseeruddin Shah compared the actors of India with that of Pakistan and said, “Hindi actors have always been dying to go to Hollywood. They would give their arms to go to there. It’s like Pakistani actors are dying to come to India. Pakistani people consider Bollywood to be the ultimate! I go there and they say ‘waah kya films banai hai.”

In Pakistan, there are many actors, like Shan, who are not ecstatic about Pakistani actors working in India. Similarly, Naseeruddin Shah is not happy with Indian actors making their way into Hollywood. “These people who are tom-tomming their entry into Hollywood are all going to come back very soon. Because Hollywood has no place for an Asian to play a lead. It’s a one-off thing.”

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a Pakistani filmmaker and activist who has won not one, but two Academy Awards for the documentaries Saving Face and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.

Her latest documentary follows Ayesha Chundrigar, who has been running an animal shelter since 2014 and taking care of stray animals.

In a video that was posted by the Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation’s page on Facebook, Ayesha Chundrigar explained, ”We also hold donkey camps, where we provide medical treatment, food and water to donkeys all over Karachi. We also educate owners on how to treat the animals better.”
The shelter houses 200 animals and has rescued over 1000 animals so far.
