Yeh Raha Dil Episode 17 Review – Phenomenally Written & Executed!

Ohkay so, this episode of Yeh Raha Dil was amazing and probably depicted the calm before the storm (which the precap promised). I know I have said this time & again & I think I will continue to say till this drama will last, that I actually love watching Yeh Raha Dil because it has been written with such an intelligent perspective and the writer has given so many different shades to all these characters, especially to women, that I have a great time watching every other episode of this drama!

So, before discussing anything else, I would like to talk about Hassan & get him out of the way. Just a moment ago he was judging Hayat & Sidra & the next moment, he was sitting next to Hayat extending his friendship to her. I am not sure if he actually meant it or was just putting up an act to teach Hayat a lesson since he has been irritated by her quite a lot, so I did get a feeling that his intentions weren’t right, like obviously he wouldn’t harm her but his intention didn’t seem as clean as he was posing it to be. Since Hayat has hurt Hassan’s ego a lot & just because is quite eccentric, I don’t think his friendship with Hayat is coming without an ulterior motive. Out of all the characters of Yeh Raha Dil, Hassan is my least favorite like I still haven’t formed a connection with this character plus to see him judging Hayat & putting her down is off-putting to be honest.

I loved the conversation Sidra had with Hayat, like I loved how Sidra made Hayat familiar with Hayat’s true nature. Hayat needed this reminder that Sidra as her friend gave to her saying that she is dignified & self-sufficient, that is why she is still not comfortably relying on her father for financial support, like all the things Sidra said to Hayat about her made so much of sense & it was good to see her friend knowing about her so much. Sidra also made a valid point that Hayat is just letting the emotions get the better of her because in this new found family of hers, there’s still no place for her as everyone in so self-absorbed that no one will walk an extra mile for her. Even though what Sidra said should’ve struck a chord but just because Hayat is too emotional about her family, she is not thinking things through.

I honestly did feel for Nida a lot when Zaki broke up with her but what I loved about that entire scenario was the fact that Nida chose not to cry in front of Zaki, yes she was emotional & yes she was saddened but she still maintained her dignity & didn’t beg Zaki to stay. The way Nida composed herself showed that she has come a long way, she has matured enough with time & she knows how to control her emotions. Even though Nida knew that Zaki was over this relationship & she was mentally prepared for this but still her heart ached because what Zaki said hurt her ego as she knew that Hayat was the reason why he was ditching her.

It was so obvious that just because Nida has read Hayat to the T, just because she knows that Hayat is so emotionally attached to this little family of hers, she was now trying to guilt trip Hayat even more & sadly involved Fatima into this game plan of hers as well. Even though Fatima doesn’t want Nida to ruin her life for the sake of a guy like Zaki who is not in love with her but being her mother she ends up succumbing to her pressures too. Just when Nida came & hugged Hayat I so wished it to be genuine & I actually thought that may be Nida will let go of her grudge against Hayat but nope, she hasn’t come to that point yet because she still believes that it was Hayat who lured Zaki & forced him to get over Nida. As much as I like Fatima’s stance about Zaki where she tells Nida that a guy like him who couldn’t respect her feelings is not worth going through so much of pain for, I so wish that at the time when Nida told Fatima to fool Hayat & help her in guilt-tripping her more, she had backed out.

As usual, Hayat was feeling guilty because she saw her sister suffering & she has genuinely grown closer to Nida. As if it wasn’t enough that Affaq himself gave Hayat the responsibility to take care of the date fixing on his behalf. Hayat will do everything in her might to make it happen as she has not only seen Nida suffering, but she is also feeling anxious as she sees herself as the culprit behind Zaki’s absurdity. Another thing that I enjoyed watching in this episode was Azra’s stand, like usually in our dramas, we get to see mothers being over-emotional about their sons & going to extreme lengths to make their son’s wishes come true but in this case, Azra even though has been introduced as an emotional woman was seen calling spade a spade as she couldn’t fathom Zaki’s thought process & couldn’t really support him in hurting a girl who he was so much in love with just a couple of months ago.

Overall, this episode was phenomenal, like there are always such smallest of details in every other scene, in terms of reactions or expressions that it becomes a treat for you to watch because all these aspects add so much of depth into every other scenario. I love the way the writer has added so much of personality that too with clarity in every single character that I feel I am watching real people on-screen with emotions. I also love the fact that every other woman is strong & empowered in her own way in this drama, like even though Nida is sulking but she is not a damsel in distress, which is refreshing to see. The preview of the next episode promised a lot of drama, where Hayat will push Zaki to the limit & will pressurize him to get engaged to Nida. Hayat is now clearly going in the wrong direction because she is completely ignoring the fact that Zaki will never be able to make Nida happy as he is not in love with her anymore. I must say Anam Gohar took the crown in this episode with her perfect performance, like I can’t emphasize enough on how much she has improved in terms of acting, like after watching her acting in Yeh Raha Dil, I definitely feel she has a bright future ahead. I enjoyed Adnan Jaffar’s & Ayesha Sana’s performances in this episode as well. Yumna Zaidi & Ahmed Ali were great as always. Please share your thoughts about this episode of Yeh Raha Dil.

Keep Supporting,
Cheers,
Zahra Mirza.

This year, Pepsi has launched its new ad that includes Noman Ijaz and Mansha Pasha. The ad is about a little girl who is worried for her father returning home at night in the dark. As they live in a mountainous area, the path is uneven and rough. As she struggles to light up the way for him through old candles and unlit bulbs, her mother informs Pepsi’s team of her daughter’s problem. There is a lot of happiness at the end as the father recognises his daughter’s drawing as they are lit up by Pepsi bottles.

Sammi Episode 19 Review – Well-Crafted

This episode had a lot of important developments to its credit and quite a few scenes which were very touching. Also, like all the previous episodes of Sammi this one too was packed with some powerful and positive messages. All the characters in this drama have come a long way, this change has been shown gradually and realistically. Aalyan played a major role in changing the way Sammi had been handling her situation so far. Rashid has always been shown as someone who was quite capable of feeling for people around him therefore watching him regret everything he had done and trying to help Sammi in some way did not come as a surprise. So far the main motivation behind Zulekha’s actions has been to ensure that Chaudhry does not get married to Sammi but the preview of the next episode suggested that Chandni might be able to bring about a change in her way of thinking too.

Right from the beginning the writer had made it quite clear that all the characters in this drama are in their respective situations mainly because of their mental barriers. Although most of them are quite capable of breaking free from the shackles of the system and those people who do not let them live a life on their own terms and conditions, but they do not even attempt to do things differently. Sammi did something tonight which was brand new for her, she decided to speak up for herself. Although there isn’t much she can do practically to change her situation right now but the fact is that if she decides to stand up for herself, the Chaudhry will automatically lose his grip on her. Right now, Chaudhry Nawaz is very conscious about his “reputation” which is why in the previous episode he asked Zulekha to cover up for him when the press questions him about his actions regarding Sammi therefore there is a good reason why Sammi’s newfound confidence will be a big hurdle in the way of his plans.

Sammi Episode 19 Review - Well-Crafted

The scene which covered Sammi’s meeting with her family was written beautifully. Sammi had very little time to get her message across and she definitely managed to give her father and brother something to think about. Even though Mawra’s outlook, just like always, proved to be a big distraction but even then that scene was very impactful. My most favorite part of this episode however was Rashid’s track and the turn it has taken. The change in Rashid’s personality and the way he stood there holding the gun to make sure that Sammi’s family listened to her showed he was on Sammi’s side now. Rashid’s meeting with Chandni was also extremely emotional. The dialogues, the performances and the way this scene was directed was very impressive.

Aalyan has always played a positive role throughout, right from the get-go he was introduced as someone who wasn’t afraid of anyone and someone who chose his battles wisely and fought hard to win them with logic and reasoning. His support saved his phupo’s life, his words brought about a major change in Sammi and he has made a big difference by changing the mindset the chota chaudhry was raised with. His character shows how one person can be the torchbearer of change. Naheed’s conversation with Aalyan was also beautifully penned down and executed flawlessly. Love how all these wonderful actors have completely transformed themselves to fit into their respective roles.

Naheed and Salima’s scene in the hospital was another impactful scene of this episode. I am waiting to see a change in Salima’s character. Even though Rashid assured her that he did not want a son but Salima is convinced that only a son can open the door of happiness for her family.

This was another well put together episode of Sammi which had a lot to offer. The preview of the next episode was very enticing as well.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode. Do share your thoughts about it.

The Dobara: See Your Evil star recently opened up on The Express Tribune while doing an interview for her latest release about how she would love to work on a Pakistani project if the right offer was made to her. She also said, ‘I’m an actor so I like it to mix it up. There are no preferences as I look for interesting characters, rather than consider the scale and genre of the project.

The 30-year-old actress has won three Filmfare awards and starred in various movies such as Highway and Badlapur. What do you think, would you like to see her in a Pakistani movie?

Why I Regret Hating Veena Malik

You may not like her, I understand. You may have genuine reasons, I understand. But did many of us, like me, start hating her for reasons we did not take time to fully comprehend?

Veena Malik has been famous for all the wrong reasons for more than half a decade now. Ever since her appearance in Big Boss, the actress has been involved in a series of unfortunate incidents, been the bud of almost every joke and the most attacked celebrity to date. This article by no means aims to justify everything she did, she certainly was no saint. Rather the spotlight will be on us, the Pakistani population, were we unjust?

I grew up bashing Veena Malik purely because everyone in my school was doing it. I hadn’t watched any of her videos or kept up with her on big boss but hey, everyone said she was rotten so who was I to disagree? My opinion didn’t change for a long time, she’d constantly be on the news and I was indifferent but every time someone brought her up I’d jump onto the hate bandwagon. Recently a clip from an interview she did back in 2011 resurfaced and changed the way I saw her and those around me. I suggest you watch the video before continuing further.

Bohat khuch hai jis pey baat ki ja sakti hai. Sirf Veena Malik kyun? Kyun k Veena Malik aurat hai? Kyun k Veena Malik soft target hai aap k liye?’ was a line much ahead of its time. We all remember what happened to Qandeel Baloch, don’t we? She was killed for doing something internet’s latest sensation, Nasir Khan Jan, is in the early stages of. Why aren’t Pathans rising up together against him being an insult to ‘Pakhtoon pride’? Why are there no clerics giving impassioned speeches against him? Why is he still alive while she’s dead? Because she was a woman. You may not agree with what she did, and because of the universal right to freedom of speech, you have every right to an opinion but did she really deserve a bullet to her head for something that YOU easily could’ve turned your eyes to? YOU could’ve blocked her? If YOU have a right to freedom of expression why didn’t she?

This is a trend in Pakistan. We pick up our pitch forks and light our torches every time a woman does something with her own life. But when children are being raped, women being abused and ‘politicians are bribing, robbing and killing in the name of Islam’  we stay quiet. We make a face, nod in disagreement acknowledging that its wrong but then do nothing. However as soon as a video surfaces of an actress dancing in her car, there’s a public outcry. Women are ‘soft targets’, they’re easy to pick on and make us feel like at least we’re fighting for something. Clerics especially just love to condemn these women as if they’re the only threat to Islam. They have rallies, spit out harsh words all in an attempt to make sure everyone thinks they’re doing something to justify their tax-free lives. They give the illusion of work being done so no one can rise up against them. Think of it this way, they clean a bowl and put it at the center of the dinning room table for everyone to see so no one notices the unwashed dishes piled up in the sink. It’s easy for them because they know these woman can’t fight back on the same scale.

And for everyone who says that it’s because they ruin the image of Pakistan and disrespect our ideologies, I would just like to say to you; really? Does Pakistan really have a bad reputation because of Veena Malik? Is your visa being rejected because of Qandeel Baloch? Is our Prime Minister being treated with less respect at international forums because a woman decided to wear short clothes and kiss a guy?

We place the entire burden of our nation and religion’s reputation on the shoulders of women who did even ask for it. And then we bury them alive if they refuse to carry it. We’re quick to cry foul every time a woman does something that she may even grow up to realize as a mistake. Instead of treating them with patience and kind words, we share their memes and add our own derogatory captions. We don’t lend a hand to someone at a low point in their lives instead push them down further. We don’t pick out our targets with careful thought and consideration rather just go for what’s easiest. We frown at a woman in short clothes but play ‘tutti frutti‘ at every mehndi. We add completely irrelevant item songs to our movies and then show our knives to Neelum Muneer. We are a nation of hypocrites, want proof? The Maulvi in the above interview chewing Veena’s ear off about Islam and the duty we all have to spread a modest image is the same one whose pictures were leaked with Qandeel Baloch.

Phir Wohi Mohabbat – An Overview

So after Sang-e-Mar-Mar I found my Thursday evenings replaced by Phir Wohi Mohabbat. Directed by Mohsin Mirza and written by Mansoor Saeed, it has completed 12 episodes by far. The promos were looking good for awhile until they became overplayed, but what can we say to that.

Phir Wohi Mohabbat stars Hania Amir and Ahmed Ali Akbar in lead roles, playing Alishba and Waleed in respective roles. After winning hearts in Janaan as Palwasha, Hania Amir has won over all of our hearts, so I had to say I was looking forward to her acting.

The story revolves around a family of two brothers, their wives (who happen to be sisters), their mother and their children. Shamim Hillali plays the Dadi, Shamoon Abbasi plays the older brother Asher, Zainub Qayyum plays his wife Samra. Asher’s brother is played by Shamil Khan as Yasir and Salma Hassan plays his wife Ramsha.

The story started off great, the storyline was definitely different and seeing the entire story unfold was interesting. The main story is that Asher accidentally killed his servant, Rafiq’s pregnant wife and daughter and to take revenge, Raffiq took Alishba (Asher’s daughter) and ran away with her to the village. Since Ramsha, Alishba’s mother, dealt with a miscarriage the same day, the trauma of losing her only daughter was very immense and she became paralyzed.

Zainub really played the character of Ramsha well and accurately acted out the emotions that her character could be feeling at such a time. Cut to many years after and we see Alishba alongside her Amna Kaki and Rafiq, whom she calls her father and it is clearly seen that she thinks of him as her biological father and is in love with him. Rafiq also treats Alishba like his own daughter, but he is not feeling physically well and obviously has paranoia that Alishba will find out about her past or someone will find her.

So then, Amna Kaki and Alishba head over to the villa in which Alishba’s real family lives. It was a pleasant transition and it actually made sense as to why Alishba would be in that house at the time. Waleed coming to the villa was funny, they all didn’t expect such a different little boy they had last seen. Waleed and Sana are the stereotypical “bahir vale couples” seemed like Sana didn’t want to stay in Pakistan whatsoever and literally was with Waleed for her work. It was funny seeing Ramsha’s reaction to Sana and I definitely laughed when she said “thori mukhtalif kism ki hai”, because what was to be expected?

I do think that the entire Rafiq meeting Dadi situation was not flowed nicely, it didn’t make much sense why Dadi was willing to go with Alishba even though she was a mere servant. I don’t know if the writer wanted to display the family as kind and gracious, or perhaps wanted to highlight that everyone was really happy with the change in Samra after Alishba arrived.

I also thought that the initial relationship between Samra and Alishba was very cute and heartwarming. Although neither knew what their real relation was, Samra was enlightened by Alishba and Alishba felt like she was caring for her own. So the big bang boom, Rafiq was caught by Dadi and he revealed the truth. I can see why Rafiq hurried on with it, the regret was caught straight onto him and he knew he wasn’t feeling well. He wanted to hand Alishba over in good hands because he was already caught.

And then somehow Alishba agreed to go with Dadi and settle there. I guess she was in a kind of shock. Ramsha and Asher were definitely angry with Rafiq but Ramsha went and said that whatever Rafiq and given to Alishba was a lie. However we can see easily that Rafiq really did give care to Alishba and treated her like his own daughter.

I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that Alishba got over Rafiq pretty quick! The next thing you know she’s happily dancing at Waleed’s wedding! It wasn’t a smooth transition at all. Cue in Shehreyar and a whole lot of drama. I don’t see how suddenly Alishba felt deeply in love with him, enough to hate Waleed because Shehreyar left. Now Alishba is caught up in a promise to Dadi, her mother’s wishes, Samra’s taunts, Shereyars love and Waleed’s feelings, and I have to say this is becoming one of those dramas that are repeating the same stories over and over. The beginning was strong so I’m hoping the drama picks up the pace towards the middle.

So overall this drama is average. The transitions are smooth and there isn’t alot of excitement. Maybe my standards are too high after dramas like Sang e Mar Mar and Sammi, though!

Hania Amir’s dialogues are kind of forced and cliche. “Jab mujhe kisi cheeyz sai nafrat ho jai, toh dunya ki koi bi taqat usse muhabbat mein tabdeel nahi kar sakti” Like seriously? Ahmed Ali Akbar is going good at playing nice guy, but for how long?

I’ll give a more detailed review next Thursday, InshaAllah!
