Woh Mera Dil Tha Episodes 10 – 14 – Review

In these 5 weeks, the schedule of this drama changed over and over again and I had a difficult time keeping up with it! I was also waiting for ARY to finally decide what time and day they want to air this play so that I can finally catch up and review all the episodes together. A great deal happened in these 5 weeks and even after so many weeks Zaid and Naina continue to be the best part of this drama. The supporting characters and actors have an important role to play in the story but they are not always impressive and there are times when they keep you wondering as well. Naina’s character went through a major transformation in these episodes. Initially, she decided she needed to do the bare minimum in order to buy herself some time till she could finally figure out what she needs to do. Madihah Imam translated every emotion Naina went through in these episodes effortlessly. The writer has also shown the difficulties Naina faced in Zaid’s house and how ultimately she manages to fit in convincingly.

It is also good to see that Naina and Zaid haven’t fallen in love with each other just yet but they have learned to live with each other for completely different reasons. Naina and Zaid’s valima was covered really well, the way they feel awkward around each other and Zaid’s attitude in particular was shown realistically. He could not stand to be around Naina and he didn’t even try to make his behavior socially acceptable. Naina too was not surprised or disappointed when Saba came and told her that Zaid loved her. When Zaid said to Naina that he was not going to sleep on the sofa like heroes do in the movies reminded me of Dillagi! Mohid and Zaid surely are world apart but while I absolutely loved Mohid’s character, I find Zaid’s character interesting too.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episodes 10 - 14 - Review

Zaid is greedy and selfish but Sami Khan’s performance makes you look forward to his scenes. Also, Zaid’s character is intriguing and somehow I don’t find myself judging him too much! Zaid decided to meet Naina’s mother when Naina wasn’t feeling well and he made the most of this meeting. He got a job through her connections and access to Naina’s bank account too. He paid Naina’s tuition fee with her own money but Naina felt like he was doing her a huge favour and therefore tried to put in some effort to please him. This turn in events was amusing. Naina’s character and the role she played in the latest episode reminded me of Dina’s character from Teri Meri Kahani. Naina has gradually changed herself and is doing whatever she can to help Shabana too. While Zaid is a thankless manipulator, Naina acknowledges every little thing which Zaid’s family does for her. Zaid’s father’s character played an important role in making his wife and daughter understand Naina situation and has been supportive throughout. Arham also found out about Naina’s wedding but he is not back just yet. In this episode, it seemed like Arham’s father felt bad about what he did.

Woh Mera Dil Tha has an interesting story, Sami Khan and Madiha Imam also keep on giving you a reason to tune into this drama. There were a few continuity bloopers in these episodes but overall the director has done a decent job. However, the production values and some of supporting actors are the weakest link in this play. This drama could have been far more enticing and appealing if it was visually pleasing as well. The preview of the next episode showed that Naina’s mother will now gift her a car as well and it is quite likely that her father might forgive her some time soon too.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 9 Review – Blame Game!

A new episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha finally aired this week! ARY constantly keeps on changing the timings of their dramas which can be terribly annoying especially for those viewers who watch these dramas when they air on television! Thankfully this latest episode aired before we forgot all about what happened in the previous few episodes!

This latest episode opened with Zaid flirting with an ex-girlfriend Sonia because that was the only way he was going to get a job. By the end of this episode however, Saba completely ruined his plans and it looks like Zaid will have to work hard to find a job now. For the first time Zaid’s father said something good about him when he was telling his other son off for asking for money all the time. Apparently, Zaid isn’t as “useless” as he looks and he is capable of using his intelligence for something other than alluring girls. Zaid’s character has tons of potential for character development and even with all his selfishness and flaws, he continues to be the most entertaining part of this drama. Sami Khan’s effortless portrayal is impressive as usual.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 9 Review - Blame Game!

The forced nikkah did not change Zaid and Naina’s personalities and their feelings for each other. The only thing that has changed is that these two hate each other more than ever now! Both of them are constantly trying to avoid each other and Zaid has definitely not changed his ways! Whenever they come across each other, the blame game starts which makes it pretty clear that both of them are not going to accept this relationship anytime soon. I really liked the valima dress scene, the dress served as yet another bitter reminder of how Naina’s life had changed now. Zaid’s sister managed to convince Naina to be part of the valima function, this development too was covered convincingly.

Zaid’s father conversation with his wife covered the reasons why he quit his job. This conversation gave the viewers an insight into what was going through his mind. He also said that he would gladly accept another job if it was offered to him by Naina’s father because it wouldn’t be easy finding a new job. For the first time Naina’s mother was shown thinking about that aspect of this track which somehow is being ignored by everyone. The flashback scene suggested that she was wondering if they had made a wrong decision in haste but later on when she talked to Naina on the phone, she once again ignored what she was trying to say. Even if Naina tells her the truth, what’s done cannot be undone but the fact that she is holding back keeps you wondering when will she eventually come out with the truth!

The change in Naina’s father’s attitude could mean that he might eventually forgive his daughter, which could pave way for Zaid to work with him and make his dreams come true! It is difficult to predict what turn the story will take from here. This latest episode covered the pre-valima decisions and arrangements. Will Naina’s parents change their mind and come to the valima? How will Zaid and Naina survive when they are forced to share the room??!!!! Waiting to find out!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 8 Review – The Aftershocks!

Tonight’s episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha showed how everyone felt about Zaid and Naina’s sudden nikkah once they were out of the initial shock. Zaid and Naina crossed paths for the first time after the nikkah took place and this interaction wasn’t different from many other conversations they had earlier when they didn’t have a clue that they might end up being with each other in this capacity. The flashback scenes showed how Zaid was dreading spending the rest of his life with a woman he didn’t even like and Naina felt like a complete misfit in this new house for obvious reasons. While everyone else is not willing to accept this marriage, Zaid’s father is the only one who thinks that life should get back to normal. Zaid’s father is turning out to be a likeable character who is kind and practical. His reaction when Naina’s father and his boss proposed that he should move to the other office came as a complete surprise. He is the only person who believes that Naina deserves respect even though this marriage didn’t take place the way he hoped it would.

Zaid can easily be termed as a flirt and a charmer who simply couldn’t care less how these women who he flirts with feel when he walks out on them. The scene in the office also showed that he won’t think twice before using a woman who likes her for his own advantage. He is a free bird who is suddenly in a situation which demands being responsible and committed. Naina too is used to living a very different life and will very soon have to live with someone she always disliked. How will these two people who cannot stand each other end up falling for one another? Finding out how this eventually happens has to be the biggest attraction right now. Sami Khan and Madiha Imam’s performances have been spot on right from the get-go. Zaid’s selfishness and reckless behaviour is often amusing because of the way it has been translated on screen!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 8 Review - The Aftershocks!

It was good to see Naina’s mother trying to get through to her even after all the warnings. We have seen plenty of dramas in which the mothers forget they have a daughter the second they get such a threat! Arham’s parents’ conversation was an important part of this episode but the actor playing Arham’s father’s role is not the least bit impressive. With a better supporting cast, this drama could have been more pleasing. Zaid and Naina are the main attractions of this play, they keep on giving you something to look forward to. Their track has tons of potential therefore I am waiting for the time when Naina will finally move in with Zaid and there will be more focus on them.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 7 Review – Highs and Lows

Last week I was wondering why Woh Mera Dil Tha wasn’t airing at 8pm since it is a decent show which deserved a better slot and now quite ironically the show has been moved to the 10pm slot and from now on it will be airing on Fridays! This latest episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha focused entirely on the aftermath of the nikkah last week. This nikkah can easily be termed as the outcome of one of the biggest misunderstandings we have seen in our dramas! Even after everything that happened, Zaid hasn’t told his father the truth and Naina’s father has completely given up on her. Also, it is too late for explanations!

Things have gone from being lighthearted to extremely serious. Naina lost her parents and now has to live with a person she cannot even stand. Getting married to Naina can easily pass as Zaid’s worst nightmare come true especially because his father is going to make sure that he looks after Naina properly. There was already a lot of pressure on Zaid to find a job, now there isn’t only even more pressure on him but he doesn’t even have the option of working with his “best friend”. Sami Khan has been absolutely phenomenal as the careless young man who puts his comforts and interests before everything else! While Zaid is gutsy, his attitude tonight showed that he is incapable of feeling empathy since he was solely worried about himself. He didn’t even try to comfort Naina because he felt that he was just as much of a “victim” as she was!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 7 Review - Highs and Lows

The only reason Zaid’s sister was all for this marriage was because she was hoping that she could also benefit from Naina’s wealth. Now that she knows Naina’s parents have disowned her she isn’t happy with the situation. Everyone’s reactions to this nikkah got plenty of screen time and some of these scenes were stretched too. The dialogues delivery of few of the supporting actors is too slow and few of them tend to go overboard, which is why it can be difficult sitting through their scenes. Zaid and Naina didn’t interact even once , they were like prisoners who were put in different cells!

After watching this episode, I feel for Naina and Zaid’s father more than anyone else. Even though Naina made a foolish decision but she had to pay a bigger price for it than she had ever imagined! This entire plan was Zaid’s idea, it was his way of getting himself out of trouble but it backfired therefore I feel he deserved this!! I don’t see Zaid turning into a responsible husband any time soon and it is difficult to imagine Naina playing the role of a submissive bahu or wife. Am I the only one who feels that Naina’s father over reacted and let his insecurities get the best of him?

Like every other episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha, this one too has its high and low moments but it definitely gave me a reason to tune into this play next week too. If this drama picks up pace, it will be more entertaining.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 6 Review – Match Made In Hell!

This latest episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha had another unexpected and important development to its credit which changed the direction of the story completely. I am wondering why a lame drama like Noor-ul-Ain has been given the 8pm slot and Woh Mera Dil Tha which is far better has been given the 9pm slot! Woh Mera Dil Tha isn’t faultless but it is definitely far more interesting that Noor-ul-Ain which has absolutely no story or direction!

Even after all the planning and convincing Zaid could not escape the situation he had put himself into because of Arham. Arham pulled back from his commitment as well as his relationship with Naina but somehow Naina didn’t even try to tell her father the truth. Zaid however did whatever he could to tell his father that this was a big misunderstanding but ultimately had to give in. Although this entire situation was really serious but somehow I found it amusing! Since Zaid had planned all this, it looked like he was paying for being over smart and for trying to outsmart everyone else! This episode as a whole however could have been even more entertaining if like the previous episode some of the scenes were not dragged. The flashback scenes were used effectively in this recent episode since they helped the viewers understand why Arham ultimately backed off. This particular development was shown convincingly and it was startling.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 6 Review - Match Made In Hell!

Right from the first episode I was wondering how these two people who simply couldn’t stand each other will ultimately end up together. That mystery has been solved tonight and now I am eagerly waiting to see how Zaid in particular will handle this situation. It will be interesting watching Naina and Zaid grow as individuals as well as partners. Even when Arham didn’t turn up and Naina was heart broken, Zaid didn’t give her a lot of concession which basically shows that he is definitely not the kind of person whose heart will melt watching a girl in distress or crying. Zaid was also shown resisting this nikkah more aggressively than Naina did which makes this entire situation even more interesting! Zaid is allergic to commitments too therefore it is impossible to tell how he will treat Naina once they enter into a nikkah. The fact that Naina was his best friend’s girlfriend for the longest time definitely doesn’t help. These two can easily pass as a match made in hell.

The latest turn in the story has made this drama even more interesting and I can’t wait to watch what happens next! Some of the scenes and situations tonight weren’t convincing enough but overall it was an entertaining episode which gave me a reason to look forward to more! Sami Khan and Madiha Imam’s remarkable performances were the highlight of this latest episode. The preview of the next episode however was a little too elaborate especially given the fact that right now we were all supposed to be wondering whether these two will ultimately get married or not!

How many of you watched this latest episode? Do share your thoughts about it.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 5 Review – Difficult Decisions!

Tonight’s episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha was interesting overall with the exception of a few scenes which could have been chopped down. The story is unpredictable but some of the supporting actors are unbearable! Thankfully the leading cast is doing their job well therefore they keep you coming back for more. Naina overheard her father talking about the mistakes he had made when he was young and why he accepted Zaid as Naina’s life partner. His reasoning made perfect sense but he has no idea what is actually going on. This scene could have been better if it was wrapped up quickly, such scenes are tedious to watch if the dialogue delivery is too slow.

The most entertaining part of this episode was watching Zaid work out a plan to get himself out of this situation. His family was quite content with this proposal even though Zaid painted a grim picture of how terrible his future could be if he got married to Naina. These dialogues were hilarious and Sami Khan was beyond brilliant throughout this episode. Zaid’s lack of interest in Naina not only because she is Arham’s girlfriend but because he doesn’t like her one bit makes this entire scenario even more amusing. Both of them cannot stand each other yet they are in this situation which is beyond their control. The only reason why they cannot reveal the truth is that Arham doesn’t want his father to find out what is going on. Tonight, Zaid really was looking out for his own interest more than anyone else’s when he suggested that Naina and Arham should elope. Right now, it seems like he just wants these two out of his life because there is no other way to escape the situation.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 5 Review - Difficult Decisions!

Arham’s scene with his father was difficult to watch because the actor who is playing his father’s role cannot act to save his life! Although the entire conversation was written well but it is difficult to take things seriously when the performances are so weak! This scene clearly showed that Arham’s father wasn’t going to give his consent no matter what therefore later on when Zaid suggested that they should secretly get married, Arham for the first time was willing to go along with it. This time around Naina was reluctant because after listening to what her father said, she knows how badly he will be hurt if she does something like this.

The scenes which showed Naina’s father thinking about how he had raised her could have been chopped down and this episode overall could have been even better if it focused on the leading cast more and few of the scenes were not stretched. I am waiting for the time when the focus will be entirely on these three characters since their story is appealing and the performances are up to the mark as well. Sami Khan once again was the star of the show, he never fails to impress!

The preview of the next episode didn’t give away too much therefore it is impossible to predict what is going to happen next! Zaid, Arham and Naina have my undivided attention and I can’t wait to find out how their story unfolds in the future.

How many of you watched tonight’s episode? Don’t forget to share your thoughts about it.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 4 Review – What A Twist!!

The previous two episodes of Woh Mera Dil Tha focused entirely on introducing all the main characters and laid down the foundation for the most unexpected twist! Zaid’s character is an interesting mix of carefree yet sincere as well as daring. Although he isn’t as serious or focused as his father would want him to be but he is a reliable friend who will go out of his way to keep his friend out of trouble. Even though Zaid is blunt and not polished like his best friend but he isn’t selfish either. His character is likeable for many reasons, the most important one is that the shortcomings in his personality do not really hurt anyone.

Faiza Iftikhar has intelligently shown two different characters which break stereotypes; usually the guy who wears the suit in our dramas and is rich and decent is the perfect hero who every girl falls in love with and characters like that of Zaid are their best friends who usually aren’t “perfect” enough to be the heroes! The situation here is quite different and the writer has made Zaid’s character more appealing without making Arham look bad. Both these characters have their strengths and weaknesses but after this episode there is a good reason why most viewers will like Zaid’s character more than that of Arham. Sami Khan is absolutely brilliant as Zaid, he makes you feel for his character without even trying. Furqan Qureshi is equally convincing as someone who is in a predicament; he cannot let Naina go because he loves her but at the same time he doesn’t know how to convince his parents for this marriage. Unlike Zaid, he thinks too much about the consequences of his actions which is why he never goes to pick Naina and this time around he also sent Zaid to give Naina his message instead of going to her place himself. Zaid on the other hand does whatever he can for Arham without questioning him or thinking about the outcome.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 4 Review - What A Twist!!

This episode opened with Arham mustering up the courage to tell his mother about Naina but his mother instantly told him off. Sometimes it seems like Arham doesn’t try hard enough and isn’t daring enough to take a stand. There is a good reason why he cannot seem to plead his case more firmly but one can’t help but wonder how Zaid would have reacted in such a situation! He wouldn’t have been so calculated and that could have changed everything. Right now even though Zaid’s father keeps on telling him that he cannot depend on Arham and he should find a job for himself, he continues to do what he wants to which basically shows that if he makes up his mind about something, he doesn’t let anyone convince him otherwise. Naina is a strong girl who is willing to take the bold step of telling her parents about Arham even though she too will face the same retaliation from them as Arham would face if his father finds out what is going on but she decided to stay quiet for now. She knows that she is completely helpless unless Arham supports her decision to tell her parents about their relationship. Madiha Imam is doing complete justice to her role and there are times when you feel like she fell for the wrong guy.

Naina’s father caught Zaid in her room and naturally he thought that they were in a relationship. Although Naina wanted to clarify this misunderstanding but Arham’s repeated requests to keep his name secret proved to be a main hurdle. What happened after that was covered superbly! Naina’s father had said already in one of the previous episodes that he only wanted someone shareef for his daughter, nothing else mattered. Since Zaid’s father has been his trusted employee for so many years now, his decision made perfect sense. Naina’s father’s insecurities are another reason why he thought this was the best decision. His character is a perfect example why people should not let their past define their present! Zaid’s father too wants his son to do exactly what he wants and never expects him to do anything right.

Tonight’s episode was one of the best episodes of this play so far, some of the supporting actors in the previous two episodes failed to impress but this episode was perfect because it focused on the leading characters. The story took an interesting turn from this episode which was completely unpredictable.

The preview of the next episode was really interesting. It is highly unlikely that Arham would take the bold step of marrying Naina secretly. Will Naina eventually give up on Arham? Will everything she witnessed tonight change her opinion about Zaid? I am waiting to find out!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 23 Story Review – Beautiful

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 23 Story Review – This heart-warming episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha was Impeccably scripted and beautifully directed. Woh Mera Dil Tha is one of those rare dramas which get better with every passing episode and this second last episode was one of the most marvelously poignant episodes of this drama so far. It was the kind of episode which you can watch over and over again. There are very few writers who can keep the essence of a story alive right till the end and add novelty to even the simplest scripts, Faiza Iftikhar is definitely one of them. After watching so many ishq tamashas this year on Pakistani channels, a romantic story like this one which is simple yet unique in its own way is refreshing. Woh Mera Dil Tha is completely free of clichés and stereotypes which itself is its biggest success.

Sami Khan and Zaid – The Perfect match!

Sami Khan’s heartfelt performance in this episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha made his presence felt every step of the way. He absolutely and completely nailed every single expression in this episode. This isn’t the first time that Sami Khan has given his absolute best to a role he is playing but what makes this character particularly special is that Zaid’s coming-of-age story has been written beautifully too. The guilt Zaid felt was apparent in all the scenes, the willingness with which he accepted his faults turned his weaknesses into his strengths.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 23 Story Review - Beautiful

Zaid clearly is no longer the cold and calculated person who never felt vulnerable in any way. In this episode, Zaid was not just terribly sorry for his actions but also scared of his own feelings. Sami Khan did a splendid job of translating this fear and realization on screen which made his scenes even more powerful.

Will Arham Turn Things Around In The End?

Sami Khan’s performance has been the highlight of this show but Furqan Qureshi’s acting has been terribly disappointing. Arham has many flaws but so does Zaid, while Sami Khan always made his character look charming in some way, Arham keeps you wondering why an intelligent girl like Naina would be attracted to him in the first place. Even tonight when Arham confronted Zaid, the sensitivity with which some of the dialogues should have been delivered was completely missing.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 23 Story Review - Beautiful

Furqan Qureshi has been doing the bear minimum which is why Arham’s character comes across as too plain and annoying. Having said that, it did look like in the last episode Arham might shift things around completely for both Naina and Zaid. Zaid and Arham were really close therefore Arham could tell that even though Zaid was not admitting it, he really was in love with Naina.

Engaging Dialogues and Emotional Storytelling

Many of the dialogues and situations in this episode reflected the beauty of every day life conversations. The interactions of the family members with each other in particular were written and executed well. Some of the conversations were extremely touching. Zaid’s conversation with Sonia, all of Naina’s conversations with Zaid’s family members and Shabana in particular were extremely poignant. The way everyone kept on telling Zaid off yet he did not say anything in his defence was also moving. Naina’s maturity was effectively conveyed through her dialogues. Madiha Imam has also translated this character beautifully on screen. She makes sure that she presents the goodness of Naina’s character as her strength and not her weakness. Naina’s dialogues when Zaid’s father came to take her home were also right on point.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 23 Story Review - Beautiful

Overall Impression

This second last episode had more strengths than weaknesses. With the exception of few performances which were not up to the mark, everything else was phenomenal. This episode was also visually pleasing (for a change), the script, direction and few of the performances were the best part of this beautiful second last episode.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 22 Story Review – Emotional

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 22 Story Review – This episode of Woh Mera Dil Tha had some of the most important developments to its credit. It was emotional throughout and just like always Sami Khan’s performance was the highlight of this episode. Zaid actually did whatever Naina’s father told her but the fact that he already realized his mistake and tried to do whatever he could to “undo” the damage makes him worthy of Naina’s forgiveness.

Naina Finds Out The ‘Truth’

Yes! Whatever Naina found out in this episode, indeed was true because Zaid did ‘warm up’ to this relationship, only after he figured out that he could use Naina’s mother to have an easy access to everything he had ever dreamed of and more. Since Zaid has just realized how wrong he was not just now but all along and more importantly he has just found out that he too has a conscience therefore he is fighting a battle he was not even prepared for. Also, Zaid never thought he was capable of falling in love with someone like this so he has a lot to deal with at one. Now that Naina has found out what he has been doing, he wants to be punished. Zaid did not ask for an apology when Naina confronted him but he asked her to punish him. All these situations, the dialogues and the performances were absolutely remarkable. Zaid’s stance, the realization, the mental turmoil, those questions coupled with Sami Khan’s mind-blowing performance made these scenes a treat to watch. Madiha Imam fits perfectly in this beautiful role and watching Naina suffer all over again was painful. Zaid and Naina’s love story has been heart-warming throughout but tonight everything they went through was more impactful than ever.

WMDT-1

Arham’s Explanation – What?!!

While you can’t help but feel for Zaid and root for him, Arham’s character is a disgrace! The explanation he gave Naina was completely flawed and does not explain why he decided to flee to another country. Their plan was to run away in the middle of the night therefore he had plenty of time to call off the plan by informing Zaid, if he did not have the guts to have this conversation with Naina. Although, Arham has always been shown as a coward but even then this particular explanation was especially lame. Now that Arham’s father has ‘forgiven’ his sister and the family is back together, there is nothing standing in Arham and Naina’s way but I am sure no one wants to see them together. Arham has to be one of the most annoying characters we have seen in dramas this year. His spinelessness in particular has been the most obvious flaw in his character which has driven his plot throughout. He owns this trait like a boss and is not even sorry for it!

WMDT2

Overall Impression

This episode overall was one of the best ones we have seen so far. The role Naina’s father played, her mother’s concern, the manner in which Naina confronted Zaid and most importantly Zaid’s state of mind – all these were shown convincingly. Arham’s character needs some serious telling off by Naina, that is one thing I am looking forward to watching. Naina and Zaid’s happy ending will be the best way to end this play. Naina is sensible and sensitive enough to make a decision which will not be guided by anger therefore in the end Zaid will probably be forgiven but for now watching him suffer is not easy. Zaid and Naina’s story has been a roller coaster ride, one of the best love stories we have seen in dramas this year but the production house and ARY has not done justice to it.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 21 Story Review – Zaid Loses, Fate Wins

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 21 Story Review – Wow! What a superb episode! Woh Mera Tha Episode 21 was thoroughly entertaining and emotional as well. There wasn’t a single dull moment in this episode. Usually the viewers are waiting for dramas to wrap up at this point but right now Woh Mera Dil Tha is more entertaining and appealing than it ever was. The character development has been gradual and convincing. Zaid and Naina’s journey has been eventful, exciting and emotional.

Fate Comes Into Play!

The change in Zaid’s character tonight was likeable as well as poignant. Zaid has always been someone who believes in planning everything and he was definitely a self-centered man completely incapable of feeling anything for anyone let alone falling in love. Tonight’s episode showed that when fate comes into play, all the planning goes out of the window. Zaid had planned to use Naina’s mother to get everything materialistic he had ever thought of owning but fate had something completely different planned for him. Naina’s positivity, the way she won everyone over and most importantly the fact that she started trusting Zaid were few of the reasons why Zaid was forced to question his actions and make amends.

WMDT

Guilt Not Greed

This episode opened with Zaid selling the things which brought him the utmost happiness only a few weeks back. The desperation with which he sold these things showed that his actions now were driven by a sense of guilt instead of greed. Since Zaid was always more self-absorbed than negative therefore these changes in his personality were convincing throughout. There was always good in him but he never let it take over because he believed that getting material possession was the ultimate path to success. Watching Naina – a girl who came from an affluent background – treasuring relationships and feelings he always took for granted proved to be an eye-opener for Zaid. Also, Naina’s vulnerability and her decision to put her trust in Zaid proved to be the final nail in the coffin. For the longest time, Zaid could not understand Naina but now that he does, he can see that true happiness cannot be achieved through material possessions. Zaid’s thought process couldn’t have been shown more logically. Although the change in his personality is huge but even then it is extremely easy to connect to.

Naina Wins Everyone Over

Naina’s decision to have faith in people who gave her respect and trusted her, changed everything. The positivity in Naina’s character has been shown beautifully throughout. Her character basically shows that when you think positively about others and about your situation, good things happen automatically. In this episode, when Saba tried to convince Zaid’s parents and Shabana that Naina was pretending to be someone she wasn’t, no one listened to her. All of them took a stand for her and the way Zaid’s father in particular defended her was heart-warming. Madiha Imam’s expressions in that scene were priceless because they reflected different emotions which Naina was going through superbly. While she was upset that Saba found out about her meeting with Arham, she was also touched by the response she got from her in laws. Even Khadija defended Naina because she too has realized that she was wrong about Naina all along. The warmth and love Naina has given her in laws is being returned now which is also another reason why Zaid has started questioning himself.

WMDT1

Sami Khan/ Zaid Steals The Show!

Although Naina’s character is absolutely adorable and Madiha Imam is brilliant as Naina, Sami Khan always manages to steal the show almost effortlessly. Just few weeks back, he gave the viewers so many reasons to hate Zaid and after watching this episode, I am certain all the viewers out there want him forgiven so that he can get his happy ending! Sami Khan always underplayed Zaid’s negative traits and has done complete justice to this recent change in Zaid’s character. The characterization is on point too but translating these changes effectively on screen was crucial to the impact this character would have had on the viewers . Sami Khan has yet again proved his versatility by making the viewers hate and then fall in love with his character.

Preview of Episode 22

The preview of the next episode showed that Naina’s father will go and tell her everything. I have to say that Behroze Sabzwari’s acting has failed to impress completely. His dialogue delivery is slow and he tends to go overboard. Although, his character is not exactly likeable either but his performance is strictly okay too. I hate to say all this about a seasoned actor but I feel that he is a miscast in this drama.

Overall Impression

This episode was mind-blowing and I am certain the upcoming episode will be even better! This episode was directed brilliantly too. The story is more interesting and enticing right now than it was before. This drama could have been one of the best dramas of this season if the supporting cast and the production values were better. Also, this drama deserved a better treatment by the channel and a better slot too!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 19 & 20 Review Story – Amazing!

These two episodes of Woh Mera Dil Tha had many important developments to their credit. They were thoroughly entertaining and also had a few unexpected twists. There are very few dramas which are so convincing that after watching them you don’t have to wonder what why and if and this is turning out to be one such dramas. The characters are intriguing and likeable at the same time. Even when Zaid’s character annoys you with his selfishness, you fully understand why he is like this and Sami Khan makes it so easy for the viewers to not hate this character altogether! Sami Khan and Madiha Imam also share good on-screen chemistry because of which their scenes are always a pleasure to watch. Faiza Iftikhar’s dramas always have a surprise in store and her characters are easy to connect to. Also, her heroines are most often different from the two extremes we see in our dramas all the time. Naina’s character could easily have come across as one of those gullible leading ladies had she not questioned the way she was feeling every now and then. Also, Zaid, the master manipulator, left no stone unturned to make sure that Naina believed her.

These two episodes were so exciting and happening that I am not sure where to start from! It seems like Zaid has fallen for Naina while trying to make her fall in love with him. Naina too is truly obliged and attracted towards Zaid if not completely in love with him. There was a time when Zaid was not even interested in getting to know Naina because he was so sure that he already knew her so well. In these few episodes, he made a conscious attempt to spend time with Naina not because he liked her but because he was scared that Naina might go back to Arham. When Zaid started convincing Naina that he was in love with her he only did so because he could not imagine living without all the luxuries but in the latest episode for the first time it seemed like he had actually started appreciating the likeable aspects of Naina’s personality. Zaid just found out that Naina was a different person now and he also for the first time questioned himself for using someone! This was an important and unexpected change in his character.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 19 & 20 Review Story - Amazing!

Until last week, he was so busy covering up for himself and executing his plan that he did not have the time to think about how wrong his approach was. It was good to see this change in his personality but it will not be easy for him regain Naina’s trust once she finds out what he has been up to.

Naina has started seeing Zaid as a more responsible individual than she thought he was. She is also convinced that Zaid is actually capable of loving someone. Sami Khan’s brilliant performance is one of the main reasons why this latest development has been so easy to connect to. Naina’s character is extremely likeable and equally convincing. The writer has made sure that the viewers understand well why Naina has changed so much. She always had material possessions but she never had someone who trusted her completely. She thinks she finally has the kind of family she always wished she had therefore the worldly possessions don’t mean anything to her.

Zaid has changed but at the same time he is still playing games with Naina and also tried to convince himself that he did not need to be so honest! These conversations which the characters have with themselves reveal a great deal about what is going on in their mind and help the viewers understand them better. I really appreciate the fact that the writer did not leave much to the viewers imagination because in such situations especially, it isn’t fun wondering what the character’s actual motives are. We know that Zaid is changing and we also know that he is noticing these changes but trying to fight them at the same time. These conflicts and struggles makes these characters more relatable.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 19 & 20 Review Story - Amazing!

Arham and Zaid finally met, Zaid told him the truth with some modifications here and there. Arham and Naina’s meeting would be next and right now it is easy to predict how that will go but there are many reasons to look forward to it nonetheless. The viewers will know how Naina truly feels about her relationship with Zaid when she meets Arham. Naina does not lie or play games therefore whatever she says to Arham will be the truth. Also, it remains to be seen if Arham will try and remind Naina that Zaid is not reliable.

Naina’s relationship with her in laws was the most endearing part of these two episodes. Zaid’s never-ending mind games, kept these two episodes interesting and happening. The performances, the script and the direction could not have been better!

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 16 Review – Entertaining!

This episode was thoroughly entertaining and I am really enjoying the recent shift in the story and different changes in the characters. It is definitely time to tune into this drama once again especially for those people who might have stopped watching it after watching the initial episodes. Zaid and Naina’s track has taken centre stage and the recent developments have been fast paced as well as interesting. Zaid and Naina both have “gained” something from an experience which initially left them bewildered and upset. Naina has learned that money is not everything, she is quite happy with the love and trust she is getting. Therefore she is doing everything she can to give some love back. She has no idea that Zaid is taking money from her mother therefore she thinks that Zaid has perhaps changed a little. She has also been shown as someone who appreciates every little thing someone does for her and is completely different from Zaid who is selfish and thankless. The shift is Naina’s personality is likeable as well as convincing. This change did not come overnight and considering how “insecure” her father always was, it is easy to understand why this new-found trust would give her the courage and confidence to see something positive in an otherwise bleak situation.

Zaid is a selfish and greedy man who is making the most of this opportunity. Right now, even though Naina has changed so much Zaid is not interested in her at all. He notices the changes in her but unlike Naina he fails to see anything positive. He is thoroughly enjoying the fact that he is getting monetary help from Naina’s mother but he is so insensitive that he is using the car given to him to give other girls free rides. Naina and his sister still use public transport or walk back home! Until last week I didn’t feel the need to judge Zaid’s character because he came across as amusing but tonight I definitely felt for Naina. Zaid is cheating on her in so many different ways and he does not even pause for a second to think about how unfair he is being! Sami Khan has translated the character of a self-centered man who has hit a jackpot brilliantly. His expressions and dialogue delivery is always on point and effortless. Madiha Imam is extremely likeable in this role. She has done complete justice to her character and after this episode, I am dreading the fact that she will eventually find out what is going on and she will be heart broken.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 16 Review - Entertaining!

The change in Fayyaz and Nawaz’s character is another interesting development. Although the actor playing Nawaz’s role completely killed the affect those dialogues could have had but the writer managed to get the message across. Nawaz has finally forgiven Fayaz which means that eventually both these families will meet at some point. Fayaz has also partially forgiven Naina and tried to help Zaid’s father today. Zaid’s father is completely different from his son – sometimes you wonder who Zaid took after! Zaid’s father deserves tons of credit for giving Naina the confidence because of which she has undergone a complete change. Zaid and Naina’s scenes continue to be the best part of this drama. Naina’s efforts to get closer to Zaid’s family are also heart-warming.

In the preview of the next episode Arham was shown trying to get in touch with Zaid. It looked like Zaid will try to get closer to Naina now because perhaps he feels Naina might leave him if Arham comes back. Right now, the story has tons of potential and there is so much to look forward to. If this drama had better production values and the supporting cast was better, it could have been more visually pleasing as well.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 15 Review – Interesting Character Development

The character development in this play has to be the most interesting element of the story so far. Naina’s character in particular has evolved in such a manner that you can’t help but like her. Her conversation with Zaid’s sister today revealed why all of a sudden a girl who had all the luxuries in the world was so satisfied living in a house which did not meet her standards in any way. Like all of Faiza Iftikhar’s heroines Naina’s character too is turning out to be an interesting one and all the characters in this play are flexible in their own way. It is always good watching a play in which the characters are not black and white especially when their flaws are more appealing than off putting! Zaid is one such character, which doesn’t annoy you but is actually amusing!

Another interesting part of these latest developments was the change in Naina’s father. In this episode, he was genuinely worried about his daughter after watching her stand in the scorching heat waiting for the bus. Although, he is not willing to get in touch with Naina but the way he feels now is very different from what he felt when he told Naina that he never wanted to see her again. This shift in his stance made perfect sense and everything he did to “help” his daughter was also convincing. He asked Zaid’s father to work for him again but he refused. It is funny watching everyone give Zaid so much credit! For once Zaid is being applauded as a hero and he isn’t going to let anyone take that away from him. Zaid’s attitude towards Naina has changed because he feels that God “compensated” him.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 15 Review - Interesting Character Development

Zaid continued to flirt with Sonia because he has not accepted his relationship with Naina even now. He is enjoying all the perks he is getting but he still cannot imagine accepting Naina as his wife. Arham is having a difficult time accepting the fact that Naina got married to someone out of her own consent and he is planning to come back. Khadija’s scene was the most annoying scene of this episode mainly because of the actor playing the role! Zaid’s mother is easily convinced but deep down she is a good person. Zaid’s father’s character is extremely likeable; he is wise, practical and caring. He is the only one who doesn’t judge Naina and gives her the credit she deserves. Sami Khan and Madiha Imam yet again nailed their respective characters and this around all the scenes were short and to the point too. For the first time Naina’s character was more appealing than that of Zaid. I am looking forward to Naina’s journey now and already feeling for her. She thinks she is finally with people she can trust but eventually she will end up getting hurt once again!

This episode was interesting and I am looking forward to the next episode. I hope that the story continues to move forward at this pace in the upcoming weeks too.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 1 Review – Refreshing!

Written by: Faiza Iftikhar
Directed by: Mohsin Ali
Produced by: Wajahat Rauf & Shazia Wajahat
Schedule: Every Saturday 9pm

Let me start by saying the no one writes love stories better than Faiza Iftikhar because her characters always have depth and variations, they are easy to connect to and are most often either likeable or unforgettable, the story is always free of clichés and is gripping as well as unpredictable. My number one reason for tuning into this show was that it has been written by Faiza Iftikhar, number two was that Sami Khan is playing the lead and number three was the production house. Sami Khan has given the viewers some of the most outstanding performances this year, he has been constantly experimenting and has been making his presence felt in every project he has worked in. Even when some of the dramas he was a part of this year didn’t have much to offer, Sami Khan continued to impress. His portrayals are always faultless and completely different from one another. Madiha Imam and Sami Khan make the perfect on-screen couple as well therefore especially after watching this episode I have high hopes that this will turn out to be another unforgettable love story.

This first episode opened with Naina (Madiha Imam) rushing out of the house to meet her boyfriend. The first conversation between Naina and her mother revealed a great deal about the family dynamics in the house. While Naina’s mother doesn’t like controlling her, her father is completely opposite. The introduction to Zaid’s (Sami Khan) character couldn’t have been more interesting since the entire scene suggested that Naina was Zaid’s girlfriend but the fact that she was actually going to meet Arham (Furqan Qureshi) came as a pleasant surprise since otherwise this entire situation wouldn’t have been easy to relate to. The bus scene was brilliantly directed and was really amusing. Zaid and Naina are cousins but there are some serious differences between the two families because of which they have to keep their feelings for each other secret and there are little chances that their parents will ever give them their blessings.

Woh Mera Dil Tha Episode 1 Review - Refreshing!

Tonight’s episode also covered the family ties in Arham and Zaid’s house. The fathers in all the households are more strict than the mothers. Zaid has big dreams and was shown complaining about the state of affairs in his house. Zaid is outspoken and anything but perfect which makes his character even more interesting.

This episode was entertaining, the pace and editing was perfect and the performances of the leading cast gave it the edge it needed. Madiha Imam looked beautiful and she completely owned her character. Furqan Qureshi fit in perfectly in Arham’s role and Sami Khan made sure that he translated Zaid’s crude personality accurately on screen. Sami Khan was definitely the star of the show tonight. The situations and the dialogues were right on point and they were executed superbly too because of this, the episode overall had a good flow. This first episode was also lighthearted although it seems like things will get serious as the story progresses.

Woh Episode 1 – A Promising Start

0

Woh is the first drama serial of its kind, which means that it will set the precedent for any upcoming horror dramas in the future. I am a big fan of horror shows but usually make belief scary creatures never scare me in the true sense of the word. I find plots revolving around demons, ghosts or black magic more chilling because such stories seem more believable. Honestly speaking, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a horror drama but the names attached to the show seemed very promising which made me give it a go. Angeline Malik has directed the show, it has been written by Syed Atif Ali and it has been produced by Angelic Films. I must appreciate Angeline Malik for coming up with innovative ideas; The Kitni Girhein Baaki Hei series was the first series of its kind too. Apart from that Shamoon Abbasi is the director of photography and he seemed quite happy with the work that the team had done. This first installment was perfect in every way; the horror factor was definitely there, the story sounded very realistic, the introduction to the characters was done very well, the scenes were short and to the point and by the end of the episode I felt like there was more to the story.

woh1

The first episode opened with a very well put together horror scene in which Mehr the main protagonist is woken up by a nightmare; a dead woman in a grave asks her to rescue her, the woman perhaps is the one who has possessed her. Every time Mehr is about to get married the evil spirit that has possessed her retaliates and for some reason or the other the marriage is called off. The turn of events is not different this time around too; very soon the marriage is called off. Everything about the first scene was perfect except that when Mehr’s mother was thinking about what will happen next, it did not sound like Rubina Ashraf at all but it sounded like Angeline Malik.

woh4

Arij Fatima surprised me with her acting in this episode; she most certainly outdid herself while playing a very difficult character. Her body language of a dead person walking when she is Mehr and not the possessed being was perfect. Her eyes were expressionless and her body was stiff like she wasn’t a real person. Mehr’s sister in law does not believe in supernatural beings, she thinks that Mehr should be taken to a psychiatrist. Despite of direct evidence of the presence of a supernatural being in the house, she is not convinced. I really liked her character because there are many people who think the way she does so that makes the story more relatable.

woh2

Mehr’s mother decides that from now on she will inform people about Mehr’s condition before going ahead with the proposals. Things finally fall into place and Mehr gets engaged to Faisal (Shamoon Abbasi) who has a little girl. Saba, the little girl is very spoiled but this side of her character could have been shown in a better way.

woh5

The scene at the mazar where Mehr’s brother meets the mystery man and the one afterwards in which he is on the roof when he is trying to find out more about Mehr’s condition was very well done.

woh6

Woh appears to have a lot of potential, the direction, camerawork, background score, acting and the plot seems perfect for a horror drama. If you are tired of watching dramas based on the same themes; shadi shuda zindagi being our writer’s favorite, then this is a must watch for you. And even if you like the saas bahu jhagra stories, this one will definitely leave a good taste in your mouth. But if horror themes are not your cup of tea then you should most certainly give it a pass because it definitely is scary. It is one of those dramas that make you want to pen down your thoughts.

Woh Episode 05 – Going Strong

0

Every Episode of Woh proves to be more entertaining than the previous one; the story has been moving forward at a very steady pace right from the get-go. Woh has a lot going for it; a different genre altogether and a very solid storyline but what stands out the most are the well etched-out characters which make this play very relatable. The viewer’s can’t help but feel everything that the characters are feeling in the play; their relationship with each other, their fears, insecurities and yes the innocence, all of it has been very well portrayed. The credit for that goes to the entire team, the writer, director and the actors. I have said this before and I will say it again that Woh is a perfect example of team effort. The chemistry between all the actors seems effortless.

woh1

The demon took over Faisal’s house completely in this recent episode; it is getting stronger by the day. Faisal faces a very difficult situation since he loves Mehr too much to let her go. Despite of all the strange happenings around the house and his concern for Saba, he knows only too well that Mehr is a victim and he cannot leave her when she is not at fault. Arij Fatima yet again mesmerized the viewers with her brilliant acting. Shamoon Abbasi portrayed the confusion and fear that Faisal is facing superbly.

woh2

Surraiya’s character adds a light touch to the whole play and I find the character very amusing. Ruqqaiya continued trying to get the demon out of the house and even forced Mehr to leave the house but Faisal on the other hand wants to find a more tangible solution to the problem.

woh2

The horror scenes were very well done but why does everyone wake up from sleep after the encounter from the demon? That made it look like the whole scene/encounter was just a dream sequence – although that was not the case. It would have been good if they used Quran or Islamic versus to get the demon to go away. We have two iconic directors who are a major part of this serial; Angeline Malik and Shamoon Abbasi, so I expect nothing but perfection from them. I hope that Mehr’s brother and bhabi are not going to be completely eliminated from the story now because that would be a big flaw in an otherwise flawless story. If they just disappear all of a sudden because they have nothing to do with taking the story forward then that would make no sense.

woh1

The preview for the next episode showed that Faisal decides to get professional help in order to get rid of the demon. I am waiting to find out how that particular part is shown because it would count as a major event in the play. Faisal and Mehr’s relationship with each other is very heart warming. A happy ending would be the perfect icing on the cake. It would be great if the team of Woh could make a special show on the making of the play especially some of the horror scenes; like the one we saw at the end of this episode and many others.

Did you watch this latest installment?  Which was your favorite scene from this episode?

Woh Episode 04 – Brilliant Performances

0

Nyla Jafferi was absolutely flawless in tonight’s episode; I could relate to Ruqqaiya’s growing fears more than anything else in the play today. If I compare Rubina Ashraf and Nyla Jafferi in this particular drama then Nyla Jafferi takes the lead without a doubt. Rubina Ashraf needs to change her style a little in order to make her characters stand out. I am a big fan of Rubina Ashraf but lately I have felt that the way she breathes in between her dialogues is getting repetitive. My favorite scene from tonight’s episode was the one in which Ruqqaiya is saying her prayers and she can feel the demon’s presence in the room. This scene was sheer brilliance on  part of the person behind the camera, the one guiding him and most importantly because of the superb acting by Nyla Jafferi. The amount of thinking that has gone into each of the scenes shows clearly in the play.

woh6

The most important development in this recent episode was that Faisal finally gets convinced that Mehr is possessed. The demon does not speak or act through Mehr now but it has an existence of its own. It is only getting stronger and will perish anyone who tries to harm it in any way. Shamoon Abbasi portrayed Faisal’s confusion and fear very well. The way Faisal gets convinced of paranormal activity was sheer brilliance too. The only thing that I find missing in the play is that the demon doesn’t actually do anything to harm the people in the house. It does not even destroy things but just scares people. Usually such creatures are very determined and they want something in particular that is why they show themselves to people. In this case the ultimate goal maybe to get Mehr divorced.

woh6

Mehr’s brother decides to take her to the mazar again so that the could once again seek help from the person who helped them befor eonly to know that he had died. The demon confesses to the crime and that makes Mehr’s mother even more concerned. Arij Fatima has proved in this play that she is not just another pretty face but she is talented as well brave enough to opt for such a difficult character.

woh4

Ruqqaiya decides that the best way to get out of this difficult situation is that Faisal leaves Mehr because she thinks that Mehr and her mother are involved in black magic. Ruqqaiya and Faisal’s conversation was also very nicely written and directed. Ruqqaiya’s friend is taking advantage of the situation and minting money out of her. The actress playing Surraiya always plays these kid of roles, she is the official trouble maker of our drama industry now!

The scene in the car when Faisal is driving Saba and Mehr back home could conveniently be shorter. The purpose of the scene was to show Faisal’s state of mind which was something that could have easily been done in a much shorter scene. The ending suggested that Faisal has finally decided to something about the situation but I couldn’t help but think that leaving his family alone at that time was not the wisest thing to do! the preview of the next episode showed that the demon is taking things to the next level and Faisal decides to find out more about Mehr’s state.

woh7

Woh has been a very engaging play till now. It has its flaws but it has definitely managed to serve the purpose. It has the right amount of horror and drama in it. The story is convincing and entertaining, the direction and camera work are very impressive most of the times and the acting is worth raving about over and over again.

Woh Episode 02 – The Demon Fights Back!

0

The best thing about this second episode was that I could totally feel the paranormal activity in Mehr’s house and everywhere she went. This latest episode established the fact that the demon that has overtaken Mehr is very powerful. It will ruin anything or anyone who tries to destroy it. The “Allah ka banda” who provided Mehr’s mother with the antidote was hunted down by the demon because it was very apparent that whatever he suggests that Mehr’s mother should do really was working. In this episode Mehr seemed more like a real person and not someone who was possessed. Her eyes had more life in them whereas in the last episode she didn’t seem like a living person at all. In the last episode, it was almost as if Mehr had completely been overtaken by the demon but in this one she was scared of the strange happenings around her. Sadly, Mehr’s mother could not follow the instructions till the end because of the interference of the demon. Right at the time when she is about to take the final step she is interrupted, which means that the demon is bound to retaliate even more aggressively now.

woh1

The scary scenes in tonight’s episode were more suggestive; we didn’t get to see any real ghosts or demons but whatever was shown was convincing enough. If you watch this drama late at night and no one is around , you will most certainly look around you many times to ensure that you really are alone!!! That to me is the success of this play till now. I have seen many documentaries which show people who are possessed and I have to say that the way the mystery man was killed was shot in the exact same way as the documentaries on National geographic. The acting, direction and the timing was absolutely perfect. The sounds and the music in the background as well was perfect throughout this episode.

woh5

I must say that there were a few times when I felt like scenes were a little dragged like for example the scene in which Mehr’s bhabi wakes up in the middle of the night would have been much better if it was slightly shorter.

Surraiya, Ruqaiya’s nosy friend was very apprehensive about Mehr’s condition, her family and everything else but it was actually very good to see that Faisal talked to his mother immediately. The bond that these two share has been portrayed beautifully, in fact all the characters and their relationship with each other has been shown very nicely. After watching these two episodes, most viewers will be able to relate to every single character in the play and will be able to feel what they are going through.

woh7

Woh till now seems to be a very good product of team effort. All the actors are very well suited for their respective roles, the attention that the director has paid to minor details shows in every single scene and the plot is very convincing. Making a horror drama or film is not an easy job at all; I think making quality comedy and horror plays is tougher than making a regular drama. It is really good to know that there are still creative people in our industry who are not scared of experimenting with new ideas. Sticking with the formula that is being followed by most writers and producers is so easy because it seems to work like a charm every time. The team of Woh deserves special appreciation for taking this bold initiative and doing very well too. The fact that this play will be a short mini serial is also very promising because most of the plays lose their charm when they are dragged without end. How many of you are following this show? Those of you who like Mystery and horror should definitely give this play a go; I assure you that you will be pleasantly surprised.

WOH Dubara _ Episode 3 & 4

0

I must confess that while watching these two episodes I had a tough time believing that this indeed was a horror show. The drama is interesting and it keeps you entertained but the horror element of the show definitely does not stand out. There were hardly any horror scenes, there is definitely mystery surrounding the demon (lambe balon wali churail, as someone called it under the drama video and rightly so too haha) but is it the sort of play that gives you goose bumps? Most certainly not!

The Demon has befriended Ali and together they think of ideas to get back to Emaan for her rude behavior towards Ali. I am totally missing the demon bit here because somehow I have accepted the nice and sometimes naughty demon as Ali’s invisible friend who keeps him company. The demon comes up with mischievous plans every now and then just like any other kid which cause problems in the house but it is definitely not half as evil as Emaan and her mother! The way Emaan and her mother are having a negative impact on the bond which these family members share is more of a concern right now than the demon itself. The Demon listens to Ali and decides to spare Bua. Bua keeps on saying she feels bharipan but no one in the house has time to sit down and do something about it because the problems Emaan and her mother are causing are taking up most of their time. Shahood Alvi is the start of the show with his natural acting, he always makes it very easy for me to connect to his character. Other than that this is turning out to be just another drama with a nakchari bahu who wants to have her own way!

woh

When Zubair and Bua go out looking for neighbors and children who can help them recite the Holy Quran so that the house will be safe from evil eye and demons, they are shocked by the response they get. Bua’s reactions most of the times are over dramatic but the bond which she shares with members of the family is actually very sweet. when Emaan’s mother calls Bua Churail and is very sure that she is the one who is responsible for Emaan’s condition Zubair and his wife tell her off but she is definitely not one of those people who get the message easily. Umair, on the other hand sides with her wife-to-be and mother-in-law this time around. Bua insists that she doesn’t want to stay in the house any more. Like I said for now the demon seems to be the troublesome neighbor/tenant who likes to see people fighting!

Ali’s parents finally started considering the reason behind his new invisible friend. I must say that the child star Bilal Khan is doing a commendable job yet again. Learning such long dialogues and delivering them with perfection must not be easy for a child his age but he makes it look like it is a piece of cake.

I am not sure if a demon who likes to steal jewelry and generally enjoys creating misunderstandings and trouble in the house is actually something to be scared of! Things disappear and then reappear, door and windows shut and open – is that supposed to send shivers down my spine? The Woh team clearly did not invest as much money and creativity in this project as they should have. Like I said the play is watchable and entertaining but not terrifying in any way.

Woh – The Finale

0

This last episode was just as engrossing and chilling as the entire serial. Each scene was very well planned. All the actors did a commendable job, their commitment to this project reflected in their flawless performances. Sadly, there seems to be a dearth of novel ideas in our plays nowadays and the success of Woh goes to prove that our public welcomes innovative ideas. Honestly speaking, I wasn’t even looking forward to this show and ended up watching the first episode by chance. I found Woh’s storyline very original, the direction very impressive and the casting perfect. Deep down I was fearful that the viewers may not give this play the appreciation it deserved and resultantly no other writer, director, producer or actor will venture into such projects. The response of the viewers made this play a success and as a result very soon we will be watching a sequel to the show. Therefore, although this was the last episode of this prequel but there will be more in the future.

woh2

Faisal’s friend takes him to an expert who explains to them the reasons behind Mehr’s condition and after a lot of research he comes up with an antidote. I have praised Nyla Jafferi’s acting many times before too but every time I watch Woh, I can’t help but be grateful for seasoned actors like her who breathe life into characters by paying attention to minute details. It was quite apparent right from the onset that the devil that had possessed Mehr was very powerful and that is exactly what was shown. Faisal’s friend had already warned him in one of the previous episodes that such things are not easy to tackle with.

woh1

Like always Shaista fails to differentiate between Mehr and the possessed being. She is convinced that the only solution to the problem is to send Mehr back to her mother’s house and she does just that. The way in which Faisal stood by Mehr was very touching. That is another aspect of the play that made it stand out; the relationship between all the characters has been portrayed beautifully. The sacred bond between husband and wife was shown the way it should have been shown. Even the relationship between Faisal and his friend always came across as very real and warm. I am not going to go into the details of the happenings of tonight’s episode because there maybe viewers who have not watched this last episode yet.

woh7

The only part of tonight’s episode which I found unconvincing was when Faisal leaves his mother how with his possessed wife, otherwise everything else was perfectly executed. There were times when the viewers were made to feel like Faisal cared more for his wife and was not at all aware of how the situation in his house will effect his child. Arij Fatima’s performance was flawless all through the play. She portrayed the guilt, innocence and helplessness of Mehr faultlessly and at the same time she was outstanding in her portrayal of the demon. This was a very intricate character but Arij Fatima acted it our almost effortlessly. Shamoon Abbasi is one of my favorite actors primarily because I feel like he is a true artist and not one of those actors/directors who are only in the business to make money. The child artists playing Saba will have a lot of responsibility on her tiny shoulders now but i am sure that with a talented director like Angeline Malik to guide her, she will do very well because she has the confidence and skills. The writer Syed Atif Ali penned down a very intelligent script, he deserves due credit for taking the plunge along with his other team members. The make up artists deserve applause for all the hard work they put into doing Mehr’s make-over in particular.

I would like to congratulate the entire team of this show for a work very well done and most certainly we are all looking forward to season 2.

Woh – Episode 03

0

The horror element of the play stayed intact even in this third episode but I have to say that I was slightly disappointed because the first few minutes of the episode were completely wasted in showing the entire scene from the previous episode all over again. A precap of what had happened in the last episode would have been enough. Apart from that I felt like two of the scenes in this episode were inspired by the film “Jeepers Creepers”. The scene in which Mehr’s brother has no eyes and the other one in which Mehr’s possessed side gets up from the bed to take a closer look at Faisal. I remember this was the exact same way the creature in Jeepers Creepers used to sniff his prey before eating it. If we put these minor shortcomings and lack of creativity here and there aside, the fact is that Woh is very scary and entertaining indeed and I really appreciate that.

woh

The demon has decided to reveal itself to Faisal’s mother and Saba, which has caused Faisal to reconsider his non belief in paranormal creatures. Sadly enough, those of us who read the “plot” of the play online know only too well where the story is going to go from here. Even the ending has already been given away while elaborating the plot. I would like to request the people responsible for this huge blooper to kindly be more careful. The idea of summing up the plot is that you give the viewer a short synopsis of what the story is basically about and not tell them how things will be resolved in the end. if  i hadn’t read the plot outline online i would have thought that there maybe some murders and gruesome acts coming our way in the future but now I know the story will not take that turn. I must appreciate the writer for not overdoing the demon bit but still keeping the horror element alive and the director deserves credit for filming the horror scenes in such a way that they keep you at the edge of your seat.

The most important development in this recent episode was the change of mind that Faisal is having and also the way Mehr and Faisal are getting closer to each other. I would have liked some of the scenes to be shorter and wrapped up quickly. There was plenty of Mehr and Faisal in this episode, it would have been nice to see Mehr interacting with Saba as well but there were no such scenes. It has been well established that Mehr and Faisal are meant to be together  – a match made in heaven truly. Shamoon Abbasi and Arij Fatima definitely have a good on screen chemistry.

woh2

Ruqqaiya’s growing fears were portrayed very well; she asks the maid to stay for the night because she is very sure that she doesn’t want to be alone at night. If I hadn’t read the plot I would have expected that Ruqqaiya will eventually pressurize Faisal into ending the marriage but that is not going to happen. I am glad though that the play will have a happy ending because I wanted just that but I would have been happier if the happy ending came as a surprise!

The good news is that the play is doing well in terms of viewership so the Woh team has announced that there will be a part 2 of the show soon after this one ends. I have a feeling that it is going to be something brand new and not a sequel. The Woh team has done a commendable job till now but it is my request to people who  run the web page that they should not give away the entire plot as well as the ending because that kills more than half of the fun for the viewers who do not like spoilers.

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

0

There was a time when the Pakistani dramas used to focus on a lot more subjects. However probably from the last decade, the drama writers have shifted the focus on domestic stories, where the focal point happens to be the relationship shared between a husband and a wife. The stories of Pakistani dramas resonated with the drama viewers because they showcased the realities but now, almost every other drama is based on misunderstandings caused by the miscommunication between a husband and wife.

The dramas one way or the other shape the mindset and perception of the society, therefore it is very important for the writers to not rely heavily on the miscommunication citing it as the only option that the wife had in order to protect her husband or prevent him from getting distressed. In recent dramas, the drama viewers came across some of the refreshing husband characters who were supportive of their wives and trusted them a lot, however, the writers had to bring in the element of miscommunication to make it look like the wife was doing the right thing. It helps them in prolonging the story and also showing the dire consequences which in any case could’ve been prevented only if the couple had communicated with each other. These kind of scenarios only frustrate the viewers and seem unconvincing, considering when the writers themselves have established the fact that the husbands on the other hand are very supportive and have full faith in their wives. Also, if the wives deal with their messy situations on their own perfectly, it would still make sense but to show them adding more to the mess defeats the purpose of them trying to take the charge of the situation. It only shows them incapable and makes this entire situation uncalled for.

These are the wives who kept secrets from their supportive husbands in recent Pakistani dramas:

Saira of Mai Na Janoo

Against all odds, Nain got married to Saira and even before his marriage to her, he knew that their cousin Nihaad was very much in love with her. Saira was also involved with Nihaad but seeing the opposition from the entire family she decided to accept Nain’s proposal. Nain was a breath of fresh air because he was a supportive husband who told his wife Saira every step of the way that he was there for her and he would go to any extent to make her feel secure. Nain believed in Saira more than she did in herself. He wanted her to complete her education, he also forced her to learn driving so that she could be independent and stand on her feet. Nain was an ideal husband who despite knowing everything that Saira was accused of, stood by her side. It was good to see a husband like Nain who repeatedly reminded his wife that she could share anything with him to put her heart to ease.

Saira ended up being the worst wife that a husband like Nain deserved. In the middle of the drama, the writer did show that Saira decided to share everything with Nain about how Nihaad was harassing and mentally torturing her. Without even questioning or doubting Saira, Nain took action against Nihaad but then the miscommunication won and the viewers got to see Saira keeping secrets from her husband. In her defense, Saira stated that she only kept everything from Nain because she feared Nihad would harm him but all these justifications looked very unconvincing especially when the writer had established the fact that Nain was always there for his wife. To reinforce Saira’s helplessness, the writer showed her celebrating her birthday at the beachfront past midnight arranged by her cousin Nihaad. This was Saira’s way of dealing with him – doing everything that he said while being married to Nain. Saira also took car rides with him where Nihaad would pick and drop her to the university. Not only that, Saira also served Nihaad tea every time he showed up randomly at her husband’s place at 2AM in the morning. In the end, Saira was the one who was shown as a bechari and the viewers were left scratching their heads as to how a liar ended up being the victim in this entire situation? The fact remains; Saira gave an edge to Nihaad, that is why he had the audacity to blackmail her!

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

Humera of Ye Dil Mera

Humera is married to Obaidullah, who can not complete his sentence without reminding her that she happens to be his Jaan. Humera Jaan is faced with one of the biggest challenges of her life, where she has come in contact with her college fellow Meer Farooq Zaman, who was in love with her and proposed to her back then. Humera rejected Meer Farooq and chose Obaidullah over him because she saw him as a nice human being. Humera and Obaidullah had a perfect life, no communication barrier, they could talk about each and everything because Obaidullah was a very supportive and doting husband whose entire life revolved around his family. Humera and Obaidullah had 2 children; Amaan who was probably 7-8 years old and Ayesha who was around 2 years old.

Meer Farooq met Humera after years and he couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that she chose a simpleton like Obaidullah over him. Meer Farooq proposed to her again and not only that, in Obaidullah’s absence, he even barged into her home and tried to physically violate her. Humera’s son Amaanullah was also a witness to this entire incident BUT, out of nowhere, Humera not only decided to keep it a secret from her husband, but also told her son that he should never talk about what he saw that night? This entire aspect happens to be very unconvincing because Obaidullah was shown to be such a husband who would not only hear his wife out but would also do what she wanted him to do. Humera could see danger looming, but she chose not to discuss anything with Obaidullah who she saw as her support system. This is one thing which the viewers are unable to accept because they really can not understand Humera’s reasons. If Obaidullah was not shown as such a perfect and understanding husband, her hesitation would have been justified but that is not the case in Ye Dil Mera.

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

Gohar of Ishq Zahe Naseeb

Gohar got married to Sameer and even before their marriage, Sameer laid foundations of their relationships in such a manner where he showed Gohar what she meant to him. Sameer helped her over and over again and went out of the way to make sure that she was at her utmost comfort. Sameer knew about her engagement to her cousin Jahangir and helped her pay the hospital bills when he attempted to throw acid at her. Gohar also fell in love with Sameer and even before they got married, Sameer told that the only thing he could and would not tolerate would be Gohar lying to him.

Ishq Zahe Naseeb’s story was complicated and it wasn’t as simple but it was shown that Gohar knew Sameer better than anybody else. She also understood him better and knew what was right and wrong while dealing with him, yet she chose to keep her and Kashif’s story hidden from him, to the point where her cousin Jahangir started blackmailing her and she chose to rely on Kashif more than she did on her husband Sameer. Despite putting restrictions on her, Sameer still gave Gohar the edge to do what she wanted to, she was free to make her own decisions and do what she deemed right, still Gogo Pan Masala wanted to act fishy, causing a dent in their relationship, despite knowing that Sameer was emotionally vulnerable and had psychological issues. Gohar never actually gave Sameer the satisfaction of feeling empowered with her trust in him because this is what he longed for the most. If Gohar had allowed Sameer to take the front seat and deal with Jahangir even with Kashif being in the picture, it would have strengthened their relationship because Sameer was a grown up who could accept the fact that Gohar loved someone else in the past.

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

Seher of Thora Sa Haq

She happens to be another gone case from the dramas that are on air right now. Seher and Zamin’s relationship has been tested a lot and she has seen that Zamin has stood firm on his ground where he doesn’t want to part ways with her. It won’t be wrong to say that Seher and Zamin have been through a lot where everyone tried to drift them apart. Seher also saw Zamin getting beaten up and after taking care of him, they only grew closer. Zamin has now started taking charge of the situation because he has Seher by his side, he wants to do right by her and is trying to maintain a healthy balance by being just towards his two wives.

Seher has seen how Rafay never had good intentions, he tried to barge into her room past midnight. He proposed to her and when she refused, he continued to pester her. Now when Seher has moved in with Zamin, loser Rafay knocks on her door and tells her that Zamin’s life is in danger, however if she wants to protect her husband, she should stay in touch with Rafay BUT not tell anything to her husband about it? How ingenious is that? What’s interesting is that Seher, who herself has witnessed how Rafay never wished well for her or Zamin, is now choosing to trust him more than her husband? Even when Zamin asked Seher if anyone came to their place, she chose to tell a lie. When Rafay called her in the presence of Zamin, she made some lame excuses. Seher is turning out to be a dimwit to not only believe Rafay, but also not telling the one whose life is supposedly in danger that he should be extra careful when he is out and about. Seher did try to connect the dots about how Rafay knew that Zamin was admitted to the hospital but because she was too busy creating a meal plan for her husband that she didn’t bother paying heed to such a big clue!

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

Gaitiara of Deewar e Shab

Gaitiara got married to Salar. Salar knew in and out of Gaitiara’s lifestyle, where she came from and the entire history of her family. Salar knew that Gaitiara was a granddaughter of a singer, her mother worked as an extra in movies to support her daughters and the entire family, her sister was just stepping in the film industry and her cousin was a famous dancer who charged money for dancing in private parties.

Salar’s step-mother’s third husband Nabeel decided to arrange a private party where he wanted to invite Gaitiara’s sister Sandal to dance in front of his circle of friends, only to put Salar down. Nabeel also used this scenario to blackmail Gaiti and threatened her of losing all of her respect in front of Salar’s circle of friends and relatives. However, Gaitiara decided to not tell Salar anything about what Nabeel was trying to do, rather she decided to convince Salar to take back the case he had filed against Nabeel, because she was scared of everything that Nabeel had threatened her of. Gaitiara saw how influential and powerful Salar was, how he was a man of his words and despite being MIA, he came back and rescued her from getting married to overaged Behzaad, still she chose not to put her trust and faith in her supportive husband and continued to beat around the bush. If Nabeel hadn’t died in the last episode, Gaitiara would still be scared and panting loudly hiding behind the closed door of her room!

Wives Keeping Secrets From Supportive Husbands in Pakistani Dramas

So, these are those intelligent wives, who despite having supportive husbands chose not to share the reality with them and decided to keep them in the dark. These kind of scenarios would at least make sense if the writers show the female characters taking care of these messy situations like a trooper but they end up spoiling everything, even let their mistakes cost them the trust of their husbands and in the end, cry as if they are the biggest victims to have ever walked the face of the earth. What are your thoughts about such female characters who keep secrets from their supportive husbands especially when they could easily discuss everything with them openly. Do you find this forced miscommunication realistic or frustrating? Feel free to add more to the discussion.

With Junaid Jamshed – Musician turned Naat reciter cum business man

0

Junaid Jamshed has been in the limelight for years. First for his music, then for his decision to quit music and now for his fashion label JJ.

Untitled

Junaid Jamshed was the most successful singer of his time along with his band mates in the legendary Vital Signs. When he quit music, he turned towards fashion designing and currently his label JJ has over 30 outlets all over Pakistan. Junaid never realised that he would get so much success in both music and fashion. “It was never about success,” he says as he takes off his prayer cap and scratches his head. Junaid the man gives off a warm vibe.

Animated and easy, Junaid’s hands move in all directions when he speaks, but his eyes hold yours. He makes eye contact and keeps smiling. He is a celebrity, but one that celebrities of the day would rather not acknowledge.

Despite having more stores than Amir Adnan, he is not as acknowledged by the fashion fraternity as a successful retailer. Perhaps they can’t relate to his religiousity, but then again, that could also be his innate humility.
Junaid has no hang ups about admitting that his success as the lead vocalist in the country could be attributed to people like Shoaib Mansoor, Rohail Hyatt and Shehzad Hasan.  We caught up with JJ recently to talk about fashion, music and of course, the legend that was Vital Signs and in that process, give Junaid his due…

Q-: How do you feel about the Danish caricatures? What do you think of the way we are responding to it?

Junaid Jamshed: I feel exactly the way you’re feeling. I am a Pakistani. I have more right over this country than you. This soil demands more from me than from you because it gave me a name. Today, if I go to America or India or Africa, people will know me because of the soil I come from. Our Prophet (PBUH) was called a lot of names including a magician, a poet and even a lunatic. By calling him names, his respect and honour wouldn’t go down. Would anything happen to him or Allah? No, it wouldn’t!

His companions didn’t burn down houses and destroy their own properties. This is not the way to deal with the Danish caricatures. They need to be dealt, yes! But in a different way. We are more concerned about the cartoons than what we are doing and how our Prophet must be feeling. What about the believers who are not following his words in abundance every single day. Why aren’t we reacting to that? I’m more concerned about that. Our lives are not getting affected because of what others are doing but because of what we are not doing.

Q-: Around the time Dil Ki Baat was releasing, you decided to leave music. Why?

Junaid Jamshed: Dil Ki Baat was very close to my heart. Even though I don’t listen to those songs anymore but if I go back, some of those songs had a lot to say in my life. Shoaib (Mansoor) and I had composed the track ‘Dil Ki Baat’ six or seven years before it actually came out. Songs like ‘Kaho Na’ and songs like ‘Intezaar Karna’ were very close to me, but at that time I had a change of heart.

Q: How come?

Junaid Jamshed: Because I was going towards the path of Allah and I was learning new things. Things that held priority in my life then were losing their value. And right in the middle of it, Dil Ki Baat came out. It was neither here nor there. I wasn’t even aware of its release because I had made plans to leave music. I personally feel that technically it was the best album we (me and Shoaib) ever made.

Q: You were also offered a part in Khuda Key Liye?

Junaid Jamshed: Initially I did take the role but I couldn’t go ahead with it because there were a lot of conflicting ideas within the movie as far as I was concerned. My environment had changed. I tried to do it but I couldn’t. You must realize that my relationship with Shoaib was not just of an artist and a producer. We were the best buddies. We were the most like – minded people when making music. We used to make a song while taking a stroll. He would make a line and I would make a line and those songs turned out to be huge hits.

Q: Give me a few names?

Junaid Jamshed: ‘Tumhara Aur Mera Naam’, ‘Ab Jiya Na Jaaye’, ‘Teray Liye Hai Mera Dil’, ‘Tum Duur Thay’, ‘Naraz Hum’, ‘Yaar Nahie Haar Dey’. Now when I look back, it was the best musical duo in Pakistan at that particular time. But then, I realized that I had a huge responsibility on me. This entire youth was doing exactly as I was saying and what was I telling them? Where was I taking them? All these thoughts bothered me.

Q: Vital Signs were a revolution in the Pakistani music scene. You changed our music history forever. VS are legends to date. When you look back, what do you miss about those days?

Junaid Jamshed: I miss… what do I miss? Okay, let me put it this way, when I sit back and look at the past, I’m not ashamed of what I did. In fact when I look at it from the point of sincerity, I must say and I cannot comment on others, but we were the most sincere band when it came to making music. Money was always secondary. That’s why myself, Rohail (Hyatt) and Shahi (Shehzad Hasan) never fought on money. There was never a problem with ‘I did more; he did less’ in the band. We were friends first and band members later. Even today we are friends. And we came to a point where we decided that we won’t make more music because our friendship was getting affected. We were all superstars in our own capacity at that time (1997). We realized that we had done good work and we needed a break.

Q: So Vital Signs’ separation was temporary?

Junaid Jamshed: At that point, yes. Because I wanted to do music on my own. VS were everyone combined. I wanted to try something on my own. Rohail wanted to do some videos and audio stuff. Shahi wanted to do some studio work. We all became better at what we were doing and it became difficult to get back together and give time to each other.

Q: You all did one concert later for Nazia Hasan. How was it getting back on that stage with VS all over again?

Junaid Jamshed: Oh it was magic! I made more money when I became a solo artist but the feeling I used to get when Rohail and Shahi were with me on stage is incomparable. It was the most beautiful feeling I’ve ever had in my life. Rohail liked what I did, I liked what he did and the same goes for Shahi. Rohail and Shahi were two of the most brilliant musicians of our times. Salman Ahmed, Rizwan ulHaq and Nusrat Hussain  these people were the best musicians of their times. And they still are. God had somehow put all these people together and it was revolutionary.

Q: Musician turns towards fashion . how did that happen?

Junaid Jamshed: When I left music, I had to do something. It was forced; I had to make a living but honestly I had little idea that our brand would one day become such a huge name.

Q: Do you design yourself?

Junaid Jamshed: I used to design myself but not anymore. Now we have professional designers.

Q: What is your design philosophy?

Junaid Jamshed: Less is more

Q: Really?

Junaid Jamshed: (Laughs) I don’t mean it in terms of cloth. I mean in terms of embellishment. Since VS days, we used to design our own clothes. That is me, Rohail and Shahi. People used to ask us, “Which designer?” Woh jo ghar ke peeche darzi hota tha, he used to make it. So, I always knew that if I ever were to venture into fashion designing, I would be good at it. I had the brain and I strongly believe that in the Pakistani market, we haven’t done enough with Eastern wear. I knew that if I were to make a kurta, it would be fabulous. Look at this (points to the kurta he’s wearing), it’s got stripes and its dull brown. My idea was to play with the cut, work on a fabric that’s wearable as well as fashionable, put some nice buttons. You can go anywhere wearing this. I saw Amir Adnan doing it and I was very inspired. That inspiration encouraged me to go forward but I had a different approach. Once I played around with kurtas, I realised that the idea that men would wear anything was wrong. They too have a standard and it has to be met. When I became successful in that, I ventured into women’s wear. I only manufacture cloth; I don’t design dresses for women.

Q: What do you think of Pakistani fashion?

Junaid Jamshed: We don’t do fashion shows, we’re not in any sort of fashion programs so I really don’t know. I feel that since JJ has gone to different parts of Pakistan, I’ve seen and understood that Pakistan is a country with very diverse taste. If you have a designer store in Karachi, you don’t really know what’s going on Gilgit or Swat. A woman in Swat has nothing in common with a woman living in Karachi. The kinds of colours that sell in Peshawar do not sell in Quetta. I still feel that there is a lot of room for growth. From whatever I know, Mashallah the Pakistani fashion industry is going very well. Some of the names are making great stuff.

Q: Like who?

Junaid Jamshed: I like what Rizwan Beyg does. It’s very interesting. I like Faiza Samee and Hasan Shehryar Yasin. Apart from that, I’m a huge fan of Ather and Shehzad Raza, the kind of photography they do. I like Khawar Riaz, very professional, slick and up to date. These guys are doing great work.

Q: How do you feel about the Fashion Design Council?

Junaid Jamshed: I think it’s incredible, it is wonderful and they have my full support. Anything that projects the image of Pakistan in a positive and honourable way, I salute people who take such initiative. Designers like Maheen who have gained a huge name in Pakistan, I respect them and I’m always here.

Q: Have you been called by either of the two parties?

Junaid Jamshed: Maheen called me. It was very kind of her and we spoke but then I never got a call from her again. If I am called, I will consult with my fellow members and see what it is.

Q: You have over 30 outlets all over Pakistan. What is your business strategy?

Junaid Jamshed: It’s not about economincs, it’s a proper system. First, research is done. What kind of market it is? Is it financially feasible? What will be the initial expenditure? We come to a figure and then decide if we should open a store in a certain area. If the sales are good, then one doesn’t mind giving a higher rent.

Q: You advertise a lot. How feasible is that?

Junaid Jamshed: There are times when reaching out to people is more important than making money. One year we might not make a lot of profit on a certain product but the next year our advertising is less and we will gain more profit. You have to make a two or three year plan. It is the demand of a company that is growing. We cannot simply bank on the idea that today we open a shop and tomorrow we will make this much profit. We have outlets that make no money but they are there for a certain purpose, the reason being reaching people.

Q: What is your take on the current Pakistani music scene?

Junaid Jamshed: I am really not aware of the scene. However, I still meet my old friends from time to time if I come across them. The other day while I was recording my naat album, I met Ali Haider. It was really good to meet him after a long time. Somehow, he looks younger and younger every time I see him. But I must say something here that listening to the band members is very important. I remember that every time I did something that Rohail said “it won’t work” or “don’t,” he was right. Every time!

Q: If you hadn’t been a successful musician, do you think JJ would be so huge?

Junaid Jamshed: Yes, you’re right in a way. People knew who I was. But once people come inside the shop, the name isn’t enough to convince them to buy. The only advantage is they would know me and come to check out what I was doing.
